and possibility of deterioration, is about to end. Duncan Marsh, a partner at Stiles Harold Williams - one of the two agents searching for a buyer - said: "We have had a number of enquiries.

"I would hope a decision would be made in the next few weeks.

"We are still marketing the property.

We have had good interest in it and it is not a straightforward purchase for somebody."

News of the imminent sale has been welcomed by town and district councillor Jim Brooks, pictured above, whose Marine ward includes the hotel building.

He said: "I obviously don't want the building to deteriorate any further. THat's important because it's one of the good buildings we have in that area.

"But I am disappointed that planning permission was given for it be fully

converted to flats.

"I believe the authorities could have done more to help the previous owners.

Again and again, we hear about boutique hotels and it could have been good for that. "I think we will regret that in the future. I am glad, though, the building's going to have a new lease of life and I would not want it to deteriorate in any way.

Coffee morning will showcase campaign against new homes HOUSING protestors in Pagham are staging a coffee morning to highlight their campaign.

THe social event will take place from 10am-midday tomorrow at Pagham United Reformed Church in Pagham Road.

Tea, coffee, cakes and mince pies will be joined by information boards about the work of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement.

One of the group's founders, Albert Homer, said: "Our display boards will be there with maps and photos of local issues such as flooding, traffic chaos and wildlife.

THe group has held two successful public meetings in the past two months about the threat of 1,000 homes on three sites around Pagham.

Couple warn over surprise bill for rates GENEROUS couple Barry and Jenny Jones are facing a five-figure bombshell for running a Bognor Regis arts centre.

THe owners and operators of Jeneses have been hit with an unexpected ÂŁ15,183 business rates bill from the Valuation Office Agency.

THey have warned they will be unable to carry on running the popular facility if they cannot get the demand withdrawn.

If that happened, it would have a significant impact on the recently revived clowns' weekend.

THis year's was the first of the popular occasions for three place and only took place because Mr and Mrs Jones, pictured above, joined with Clowns' International to stage it. THe couple allowed the clowns' group to meet privately for free in the centre before the public activities at the weekend and enabled some of them to camp there as well to reduce their costs.

THe clowns want to come back next year with the same arrangement in place.

But Mr Jones told councillors last week the unexpected demand from the agency would be the end of the centre.

"I just want to make it clear to this committee that we can't afford that.

"We shall have to close the place and we don't want that. We are very concerned at getting this bill," he told the Joint Western

Arun Area Committee.

THe couple bought the building - the town's former United Reformed Church - in May 2012.

THey opened it as a centre for groups in the community to use as a meeting place.

Its central location and ample parking has seen it become popular with a wide range of users.

Four churches use it for their weekly meetings. THey include congregations from Nigeria and Brazil. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous also meet there regularly.

Dance groups use the building as well along with a youth drama group, Mad Acts, a WI and the civil service retirement group among the 15 regular bookings.

Afterwards, Mr Jones said: "We didn't think we would have to pay business rates because the building is used as a church. THere are probably more people attending church here now than when it was a United Reformed Church."

THe ÂŁ15,183 demand covers two years of business rates and follows a visit from a VOA officer who measured every room.

But Mr and Mrs Jones have been given hope by Arun District Council. THey were advised to become a community interest company. If the status is accepted, should see Arun offer them rate relief.

Free parking again in 2017 DISCS for free parking in Bognor Regis town centre will be on sale next week.

THe royal blue discs are being distributed ready for motorists to buy from THursday.

THe ÂŁ1 cost will give drivers stays of up to two hours for free in the Fitzleet multistorey, Lyon Street and Hothamton car parks. THey will be valid from January for a year thanks to the continued partnership between Bognor Regis and Arun councils and Bognor Regis Traders' Association.

Chris Heaps, the association's chairman, said: "THe free parking carries on being extremely popular. We've ordered 30,000 discs based on the sales of more than 25,000 in the current year and we are hoping to do at least the same again.

"It's good that people know the scheme is well established and they start asking about the new discs from the start of

December before they run out.

"Our next step is to promote the discs to visitors so they want to come into the town centre and see what it has to offer. I think the town council is doing all right but, the more people who can come and park here and spend money in our shops, the better."

Next year will be the scheme's sixth.

Sales of the discs have grown each year.

THe new discs will be available from the Bognor Regis Post, Heaps of PCs, Unique Promotions, the Bognor Regis Observer/ Visitor Information Centre, Polka Dot Stripes and all the outlets from previous years.

Calls have been made for longer stays in the car parks to be funded have been raised by companies in the Business Improvement District workshops held by Toyubur Rahman.

Park comes alive for Christmas CHRISTMAS came to Hotham Park in Bognor Regis with its biggest carol service.

THe town's Salvation Army band joined with the RAFA branch choir, pictured left in the foreground, and a better than ever 500-plus revellers for the annual celebration.

Traditional favourites resounded around the park by torchlight as the Hotham Park Heritage Trust event last Sunday was another success.

THe breakdown of the sound system failed to dent the enthusiasm for the occasion as the huge crowd of singers on and around the bandstand just raised their voices to make up for the loss of amplification.

Malcolm Hunter, the trust's vice-chairman, said: "THis was one of our best December events. Father Christmas was so popular he overran by 30 minutes.

"THis is a really good evening. It's something for the children and the community.

"It spreads the Christmas feeling and we enjoy putting it on. THe atmosphere is always good.

"We've stayed local this year as well with the band and the choir."

THe first two hours of the event from dusk were focused around children's activities. THey

could visit Father Christmas and his elves in their grotto, enjoy Santa's Magical Kingdom and some Pagham Ponies.

Among those having fun were Tracey Jehu and her two sons aged five and 17 months.

North Bersted resident Tracey, 39, said: "THis is the first time we've been and it's a good fun family event to get you in the spirit for Christmas.

"We've been to other events in the park. It's nice to have such a lovely big space. It balances the beach nicely."

THe carol concert filled the final hour of the festivities.

Also attending for the first time were Middleton residents Paul and Vicky Harris.

Paul, 64, said: "We are very Christmassy people.

I'm about eight years old when it comes to Christmas.

"We're meeting our friends here. THere will be seven of us - and a dog!"

Vicky, 63, said: "We've just seen a little boy who saw Santa come out of the park lodge and told us he had a secret spot on body which he touched to make Santa appear. We just love that sort of thing."

` Trees are saved TREES along a Bognor Regis main road have been spared from the axe.

Arun District Council has refused planning permission for the removal of 12 ash trees planted in two groups along Shripney Road.

THe applicant, Mitie Landscapes, also wanted to carry out various surgery to other specimens in the area.

But council planning officer Zac Denton said in his report: "THe trees make a significant contribution to the area and, therefore, in the absence of any arboricultural justification, the works to the trees would be detrimental to the visual amenities of the locality."

` Felpham thanks THANKS have been given by Felpham Village Conservation Society for the £208 donated at its Christmas lights switch on.

John Fenton-Jones, of the society, was granted a street collection permit by Arun District Council for the occasion last Friday.

No expenses were deducted to mean all the donations generously given will be used by the society for its work around Felpham.

More rail strikes RAIL passengers faced severe disruption on journeys from Bognor Regis and Littlehampton as a second strike began this week.

THe drivers' union, Aslef, started to take action and joined the RMT in its long-running dispute with Southern Railway about the extension of driveronly operated doors on trains.

Aslef staged a two-day overtime ban on Tuesday and Wednesday and will follow this with a three-day strike from next Tuesday to bring the Southern network to a halt.

Both sets of industrial action are set to continue into next month to add further misery to long-suffering passengers.

THe situation has prompted Church of England bishops in Sussex to call for an end to the 'cycle of blame' which is

causing such disruption to hundreds of thousands of passengers.

Dr Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester, refers in the letter to the misery being caused to working people and their families who rely on the railways for their wellbeing.

Backed by the bishops of Horsham (Mark Sowerby) and Lewes (Richard Jackson), Dr Bishop's letter refers to a 'moral obligation' to provide public transport while recognising the complexity of the issues involved.

THey say their task as Christian leaders is 'to promote those processes which lead to human flourishing in a just and free society'.

Meanwhile, Southern Railway went to the High Court on Wednesday to seek to make Aslef's action illegal.

£15,000 watch raid AN APPEAL has been made for witnesses after a £15,000 watch was stolen in Barnham.

THe victim, a 65-year-old man, was at home in Lake Lane, when he answered the front door to two men about 5pm last Saturday.

One of the suspects immediately grabbed the victim's wrist and pulled him outside.

THere was a brief struggle before the watch strap broke and the offenders made off on foot with his gold Rolex.

Detective Constable Ali Hutchings said: THe men were threatening and violent towards the victim, causing him minor injuries and stealing his high value watch.

Illegal workers detained after raid in town centre TWO illegal workers have been arrested in Bognor Regis.

THe Vietnamese men, both aged 19, were arrested in an operation by Home Office immigration enforcement officers last week.

THey were found to have entered the UK illegally and were working at a nail bar in the town centre. Both men have been detained and could be seen being led into Home Office vehicles parked in Sudley Road. Action is being taken to remove them from the UK. Assistant director Richard Lederle, from the South East Immigration

Enforcement team, said: "We are working hard to tackle illegal working and those who abuse the UK's immigration system.

"Illegal working is a not a victimless crime. It also exploits some of the society's most vulnerable people.

"We expect everyone here illegally to leave the UK voluntarily. For those who don't, the message is clear - we will find, detain and remove you."

THe nail bar was warned it would face a £20,000 penalty for each illegal worker until it could be proved it had carried out right to work checks.

Parish anger at prospect of extra land grab for housing Plans' policies to be ignored by council VILLAGE visions prepared by residents in the Bognor Regis area are to be overruled.

THe policies contained in neighbourhood plans which set out where people wanted new housing in their localities will be ditched by Arun District Council. Members of its local plan sub-committee agreed on Tuesday to consider making land outside the allocated areas available for development and to begin talks with the town and parish councils over the issue.

THe decision is set to be agreed by all councillors next month. Kathryn Banks, Arun's planning policy team leader, told the sub-committee: "THis option removes all current parish/town allocation numbers from the local plan."

THe supply of housing land had to be boosted in Arun's local plan land use blueprint to ensure government housing targets were met.

Arun needed to show a five year supply of housing land but had only 2.12 years supply. THis meant the housing policies

in the plans were outdated, she said.

Felpham was among the first parishes to agree its neighbourhood plan in July 2014. Tuesday's parish council meeting saw Cllr Paul English call for the council to be involved in the decisions.

"It should have been referred to the local plan committee so we know what changes were taking place and how they would affect Felpham.

"THe neighbourhood plan is a fluid document that can change. We should ask for a special meeting," she said.

Cllr Mary Harvey supported him. She said: "We should have a special council meeting on this alone."

Richard Wickens, the council's clerk, said: "THe sites talked about are potential sites at this stage. At this moment in time, we don't have enough information to work with."

Cllr Hillary Flynn agreed. She said: "Although Felpham isn't that directly affected by the placing of the sites, it is the surrounding sites such as in Middleton that will become a problem."

ANGRY Bersted councillors have expressed a total lack of confidence in Arun District Council's planning work.

Parish council vice-chairman Cllr David Lainchbury said Arun had failed to deliver a local plan to guide housing development in the area for the next 15 years.

THis inability to plan for the future had left sites vulnerable to housing schemes to enable the government's house-building targets to be met.

"Given that Arun have failed to deliver a viable local plan despite all the resources, time and effort, I don't know how anybody can feel they have any confidence in them.

"THis responsibility lies at the top of Arun. How they have the temerity go into work is beyond me because they failed, let alone the waste of public money involved in the process," he said.

"It's a very neat way of solving all their planning issues - to cut out the part of the neighbourhood plan which protects these sites so they don't have to worry about it."

He made his damning comments as the parish council's planning, amenities and environment committee on Tuesday discussed a meeting Arun held with town and parish council clerks the previous week.

At this, the clerks were informed Arun would be looking to use small sites across the district for housing developments in addition to the potential strategic sites for large-scale schemes already identified.

THese extra parcels of land could be developed even though thousands of

residents in areas like Bersted, Felpham, Yapton and other villages had voted to keep them free of development by approving an alternative use for them in neighbourhood plans for each area.

THe plans were part of the government's intention to involve people in deciding how their locality would look in the decades to come.

Parish council chairman Cllr Brian Knight blamed the government for the situation Arun was in because it insisted on more and more homes being built.

"Localism to this government is nothing and they have proved it. I really do feel we need to know how many people are in the priority group on Arun's housing waiting list," she said.

"If the number is 13, as I believe, why do we need 1,000 houses to be built a year? It's because of migration - of people moving down from Surrey and London because it's so much cheaper.

"Once they have moved here, they become commuters and add to the problems with our roads."

Cllr Gill Yeates, who chaired the committee, said the parish council could not just alter the neighbourhood plan.

"As I understand it, we would have to go out to consultation and hold another referendum," she said. "We would have to re-do a fair proportion of work on it."

As reported, Arun's housing target until 2031 has climbed to 919 a year and could reach 1,000 after an inspector has backed its local plan.

THe three-storey building dates from the 1830s and is listed by Arun as being of historic significance and affects THe Steyne Conservation Area. Its floorspace totals 2,020sq m.

Planning approval was granted by the council in 1988 for ten studio and one-bed flats on the first floor but the rest of the building continued as a hotel.

THat use is believed to have ended last year but the building is still used for residential purposes.

Arun granted approval last November for ten more flats to be created across the basement, ground, second and third floors.

Letters of support for the change numbered 62 to Arun. THere were six letters of objection. Bognor Regis Town Council strongly objected.

` Santa's sleigh FATHER Christmas continues his journey around Bognor Regis on his illuminated sleigh this week.

THe seasonal visitor will be busy visiting neighbourhoods with his friends from Bognor Hotham Rotary Club.

Tonight sees him at the Roundle Estate in Felpham (5.45-8pm) and tomorrow he will be at B&Q in Shripney Road during the day and North Bersted from 4.30-7.30pm.

Sunday sees him in Collyer Avenue, Monday in Middleton West, Tuesday in Aldwick Felds and Wednesday at the Glenwood Estate.

Garages tipping fear GARAGE owner Ted Brodie fears the site will become a magnet for flytippers around Bognor Regis.

Mr Brodie is among those who own some of the 32 garages behind the Durlston Drive shops.

He believes West Sussex County Council's decision to charge for categories of rubbish at its nearby waste site - and cut its opening hours - will prompt more people to just dump their litter.

He said: "We've had some flytipping there in the past but it has got better in the past few years after we caught someone in the act. At the moment, it is not as bad as it has been.

"But I worry that the situation is set to get bad again. I think it will get worse because people won't want to pay to take things to the tip.

"We've already got two tyres there. What are we supposed to do with them?

"We can't take them to the tip because, otherwise, we would be charged for them. We can't just

dispose of them as we used to in the past. I have taken them to the tip and they have allowed me to get rid of them there.

"THe only thing I can think of doing is to compound the felony and take them out somewhere and dump them there.

"THe situation is going to get out of hand in my opinion. More and more dumping is going to happen."

Items left at the site in the past have included sofas, three-piece suites, fridges, TVs and a bag of soiled nappies.

Mr Brodie has owned a double garage and two single garages at the site for 30 years. Many of the other owners are builders who each own several garages.

THe layout of the site made it difficult to put up gates to protect the private property, he said. But he intended to organise a meeting of all the owners to find out how they wanted to tackle the problem.

'Junction is dangerous' FURTHER warnings have been made about the risks at a notorious Middleton junction.

District councillor Jacky Pendleton said Comet Corner was an accident waiting to happen. She warned county council plans for 13 houses in Yapton Road in Middleton would worsen the situation.

"Especially since the relief road has opened, the traffic has got so much worse.

You can't get out. You can be waiting for 10-20 minutes. I fear for some elderly residents in Yapton and Middleton.

"I raised this issue at a planning meeting with regard to a development in Yapton, because Yapton is as badly affected as Middleton as well as Felpham, but I was put down by a county highways representative who said each development was considered in its own right.

"I said then my fear was that these developments would make an impact and that is exactly what is happening.

"THe county council owns all that land.

THey have started with 13 houses and I would bet my house it will continue to develop the land in small lots. THe county council needs to do something about that junction. If they don't, there is going to be a disaster," she said at last week's Joint Western Arun Area Committee.

Middleton resident Guy Raven spoke of his fears further development would affect Comet Corner. After the meeting, he said: "THe county council is taking a very cynical approach to developing this land.

THere is easily room for 100 or more houses which, if they had to fund work at Comet Corner, would wipe out their profit. But

those developments are going to affect that junction. THere's no doubt about that."

Middleton Parish Council member Cllr David Allsopp said: "I was the clerk of the parish council for 12 years and the council must have written 100 letters in that time about Comet Corner predicting all the increase in traffic.

"THe county kept saying to wait until we had the S106 money (from the Site Six houses) but that £500,000 is nothing at all when you get a £2.4m bill for traffic lights."

A proposed diversionary lane would cost £350,000 but do nothing for Yapton motorists. "THere is a tremendous queue of traffic there at peak times. THe person at the front of the queue is under tremendous peer pressure to move and that's the cause of the accidents," he said.

Hugh Coster, the deputy chairman of Bognor Regis Civic Society, said a vehicle passed Comet Corner every four seconds between 7am-8am daily and for an hour from 5pm and 4.5 seconds at the nearby Oystercatcher junction in Climping.

"Somebody turning right just has that time to make a judgement. THat is horrendous," he said. "Somebody is going to die at Comet Corner. " New West Sussex County Council highways boss Cllr Bob Lanzer said: "A diversionary and deceleration lane is proposed for Comet Corner next February.

We believe it will have an effect on improving safety levels and have a positive impact on drivers at that junction."

Since 2011, all six injury accidents at Comet Corner were due to driver error, he said.

Driving warning FIREFIGHTERS are staging a display in Bognor Regis today to highlight the dangers of mixing drugs and alcohol and driving.

One of the town's fire crews is raising awareness of the consequences of getting behind the steering wheel under the influence with a display at the Tesco store in Shripney Road from 9.30am-1pm.

Nicki Peddle, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's intervention and prevention manager, said: "Alcohol and drugs affect everybody's ability to drive safely and no one is immune to the effects.

"THe consequences of a serious road

crash are utterly devastating to the victim, their family and friends, and the emergency services crew who attend the scene.

"Every single accident involving a driver under the influence is avoidable and it's inconceivable today that anybody would knowingly get behind wheel having had a drink or taken drugs. THere is simply never an excuse."

THe display will highlight the dangers of prescription drugs as well as illegal substances and alcohol.

Sussex Police have also launched a Christmas crackdown on drink and drug drivers. THe force has a record 300 officers able to test motorists for drugs.

Councillors want to know opinions TALK to us, Bognor Regis councillors have urged residents.

THe town council members want to know how people who wish to improve the town would find it easiest to contact them.

One idea could be to hold a series of open engagement forums at various times and places to help the council's community engagement and environment committee live up to its name.

A council spokeswoman said: "Anything that arises from these open engagement forums, which is within the council's power to address, will be placed on the agenda for the next committee meeting councillors to discuss formally and take decisions where necessary.

"Dialogue between the committee and the open forums will continue with any decisions taken by council fed back through the next meeting of the forum.

"Please let us have your views on the suggested revised format before the issue is considered and decided by the council

in the new year."

THe council set up the committee earlier this year to promote better links with those who live within the six political wards of Bognor Regis.

THe search for a suitable format for its meetings in the town hall to enable residents to have their say while fulfilling the council's legal duties led to a forum being held at the end of its latest meeting.

But some criticism was made by those present about the need to sit through the formal meeting and people's reluctance to wait while the lengthy agenda was tackled.

"THis committee is a new enterprise for the council and all members are keen to see it succeed. THe main premise behind the new committee is the engagement with the community," said the council spokeswoman. "THerefore, members are keen to get the format of the forums working well for everyone."

CONCERNS about a missing teenager from Bognor Regis have been raised by police.

Officers said they were keen to know the whereabouts of Andrea Mehmetja.

A Sussex Police spokesman said on Wednesday: "Andrea, 16, went missing from his home in Bognor Regis on Monday, November 28, and hasn't been seen since. It is believed he may have travelled to Canterbury in Kent where he has connections."

College praise from Ofsted OFSTED chief Sir Michael Wilshaw has used his annual report to highlight the success of Felpham Community College.

Sir Michael's report makes a number of positive comments about the quality of teaching at the college and the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of teaching staff.

It states: "Senior leaders in Felpham Community College monitor the quality of teaching very effectively and they know teachers' individual strengths and areas for further development well.

DRAWING on the past to inspire the future is the theme about Butlin's.

Bognor Regis features prominently in the look at the 80 year history of the popular holiday company.

Christmas lights are a delight in Felpham

Open air concerts by the carollers from Bishop Tufnell and Downview schools sent the festive spirit echoing around the village centre.

THeir performances were followed by the switch on of the coloured lights on the traditional Christmas tree at Grassmere Parade. THe occasion last Friday attracted some 300-400 spectators. Felpham Village Conservation Society vice-chairman Glenn Powell said it had been a success.

"THis is all about the community. It's nice for Felpham to have this event to start its community festive season.

"THis is the third year we've had the choirs from the two schools and the second year we have had to close Felpham Road in front of the tree because of the safety of the large number of people who are watching," he said.

THe tree was donated by Butlin's, Landbuild provided the road closure signs and JAM Electric ensured the lights worked.

"THeir support is typical of the goodwill that surrounds this event," said Mr Powell. "Arun District Council and other

authorities are always very helpful and it was nice to see the parish councillors here as well. It's good to have the support of all these disparate bodies."

THe hour-long celebrations began at dusk as the Bishop Tufnell choir regaled the gathering crowd with their carol concert.

THey were followed by 88 children from the choir at Downview Primary School.

THey delighted the audience with rendition of old and new Christmas songs.

Among them was eight-year-old Mollie Burke.

She said: "I enjoyed singing the carols.

My favourite song was White Christmas.

"I like singing with my friends and I'm not nervous about it."

Fellow singer, Ollie Durrant, nine, said: "I enjoyed everything about singing here.

You feel good when people clap you at the end of the songs.

"I liked the first Christmas medley with White Christmas in it the best."

He and Mollie had appeared at previous switch ons. "I wasn't nervous about this at all," he said. "But the school choir goes to the O2 Arena in London every year. THat's loud and it does make you quite nervous but it's a great feeling at the end."

THe choir's co-ordinator was Year Six teacher Kate Trodd and the music was provided by Year 5 teacher and keyboard player Adam Norris.

Ms Trodd said: "THese children are from Years 3-6 and this is just one of the Christmas events they are taking part in.

"THere's also Carols by Candlelight, Hollymead Nursing Home and the school's Christmas fair.

"Singing in a choir boosts the children's confidence and it gives a purpose to their weekly choir sessions in school to come here and sing for people outside the school."

THe choir would again be heading to the O2 Arena next February to take part in the Young Voices concert.

"THere are 7,000 young singers involved in that day every year," she said. "THose concerts are held around the country."

THe singing was followed by the blessing of the tree by Father John Challis, the vicar of St Mary's Church.

He said: "THe children have given us an absolutely wonderful start to our celebrations."

He led the countdown to the switch on by Lucas Wiggins, ten, whose bauble was the best designed decoration at a conservation society event.

Call to scrap onstreet fees for parking in town centre

` Cricket pavilion A NEW pavilion is being planned by Aldwick Cricket Club.

THe club's members want to replace their current building in Brooks Lane in Bognor Regis.

THey have asked Arun District Council for planning permission for a single storey building with two changing rooms, a clubroom and a bar area.

A statement by Ian Guppy, for the club, says: "A previous planning application was granted in 2014 for a refurbishment but this is not cost effective."

THe proposed building, at 88.5sq m, is slightly smaller than the existing structure.

SCRAP kerbside parking fees to help Bognor Regis, a residents' watchdog has urged.

Bognor Regis Civic Society wants the on street charges to be dropped by West Sussex County Council as part of its work to help the town's regeneration.

THe county council is responsible for setting the payments on the roads around the town centre while Arun District Council controls the car parks.

But the civic society's deputy chairman, Hugh Coster, said it was unfair that Bognor Regis was the only town in the district on which the county council imposed the street parking fees.

"THere are no on street fees in Littlehampton or Arundel. So, all we want in Bognor Regis is a level playing field and to be treated the same way as they are.

What we are asking for is free parking in those spaces for an hour or two," he said.

"When the county council recently proposed to charge for onstreet parking in Arundel, it accepted the argument of residents that the move would damage tourism and trade.

"Exactly the same argument applies to Bognor Regis. Other councils and the town traders have exactly the same problem of a lack of cash as the county council yet they are paying towards providing two hours free parking in some car parks.

"It is not difficult to do this. All it requires is a few traffic regulation order changes and we would like it done as soon as possible."

THe county council charges 90p for an hour, with a maximum stay of an hour, in roads like Sudley Road and Gloucester Road.

It also charges for parking along THe Esplanade and Marine Drive West at various times of the year.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We provide 317 spaces that are free for two hours waiting out of a 988 parking bays within Bognor Regis.

"THey are in roads like Canada Grove, Argyle Road, Steyne Street, West Street and Albert Road. THey are all close to the town centre.

"THe reason behind that level of free parking is to provide a regular turnover of shoppers.

"If we did allow for additional free parking, which was time limited, it would incur extra enforcement costs."

THe county council also charges for parking along the seafront - THe Esplanade and Marine Drive West - between April 1 and September 30.

Mr Coster also asked Cllr Lanzer to ensure the county council repainted road markings or removed those no longer needed.

"THey look dowdy and ill-kept but repainting them will make them look bright, clean and smart. It will make a massive difference to the town."

Cllr Lanzer said he agreed and pledged to take action against unattractive street furniture and road markings.

Michael's Big Love mission BIG Love founder Michael Johnson has taken his church from Bognor Regis to the slums of Africa.

Michael is following the success of his ministry among the homeless and dispossessed of the town by seeking to improve the lives of some of the world's poorest people.

His Foundations for Love charity will be launched in Kenya early next month.

He said: "It is an empowerment programme. I don't want to teach a man just how to fish. I want to teach him how to catch it, clean it, process it, market it, sell it and reap from it.

"THere will be four of us going to Nairobi to finalise plans for the new charity like the risk assessment and ensuring all its policies are in place."

Bognor Regis resident and former armed robber Michael, 50, said he was excited about the prospect of helping to change the lives of Africans.

He spent two weeks in Kenya last month with one of his volunteers.

THe trip included a host of visits to and

several stays in some of the world's poorest and most violent slums, as well as going to church. THey included Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa where the police warned him to leave for his safety.

"THe police don't go in there, the Army don't go in there but we didn't go to Kenya as if we were comfortable white middleclass Europeans," he said.

"You need to think why a person thinks the way they do, if you want to understand them. You have to walk in their shoes for a while. I could see the need was there as soon as I arrived in Nairobi and I wanted to find the most broken and try to bring them life."

THeir hectic visit saw them make several valuable connections. Among them was Bishop Akuna who has agreed to chair the new project.

"We preached in five churches in a mixture of ghettoes and in townships on the hills," said Michael.

THe speed of the arrangements, which changed as the visit progressed, saw the details of the new project agreed by the

tenth day. THey are being submitted for a charity registration ready for next month's formal launch.

Michael held two initial events in Nairobi and Eldoret. A total of 70 people went along in Nairobi and 55 in Eldoret.

Of those, 43 signed up to take part in the project. THey included prostitutes, child glue sniffers and street criminals.

"Some of the glue sniffers are as young as six," said Michael. "It was heartbreaking to go out at night and see them."

A further launch will take place later next year. Michael started Big Love in 2007 after an chaotic and broken early part of his life.

A childhood of abandonment and physical and sexual abuse was followed by violence and time sleeping rough.

MORE web savvy Bognor Regis residents are switching on to a council's website.

THe move by Arun District Council to put a wider range of services online has seen them used by an increasing number of people.

THe past four months alone have seen Arun receive more than 45,000 planning enquiries and 20,000-plus housing enquiries online.

THe council has also made more payment options available online.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun's cabinet member for community services, said: "While it is important that Arun remains accessible for all, people do now expect there to be an online option available.

"By allowing customers to pay their bills online, it means that the council's staff in the contact centre can perform other duties and Arun can become more efficient which helps keep the level of council tax charged as low as possible."

` Assaults denied A FORMER nurse from Bognor Regis accused of sex offences at two hospitals has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Festive fun with Santa Claus and fake snow

THe final speciality market of the year was a festive extravaganza last weekend.

Storytimes with Father Christmas kept young children enthralled indoors and the snow falling on the London Road precinct delighted them outside.

THeir parents had plenty to browse through and buy, with up to 11 stalls providing a specialist range of continental hot food, gifts, crafts and garden stalls lining the centre of the precinct.

Town centre manager Toyubur Rahman said he was pleased with the market's success.

"I've had lots of positive comments from the businesses in the town. Specsavers, Wilkinsons and Boots told me on Saturday their takings were above target. Superdrug matched their target.

"Costa Coffee and, especially Greggs, had massive queues outside as well.

"We had the most stalls on Saturday and it was a shame that two of the holders had to leave before Sunday for family reasons. But those that are left have done well.

"THis is the third Christmas market I've held and it will be back again next year. I've just finalised the dates for next year's markets with the operator and we will be keeping mostly to them for the three markets in 2017."

THis year's Christmas market followed the

Cold, bright and sunny conditions proved more favourable this year and continued throughout the six days of the market.

"It's been a bit quiet today (Sunday), though there have been a lot of people here. But Saturday was very busy.

"To have Father Christmas wandering around, and the fake snow, was really lovely. THe children really liked that and seeing Santa Claus was brilliant.

"I wish we could have had that every day. It would have made a difference during the week.

THe people here, though, are nice and friendly.

We've had a lot of them come back day after day.

It's been nice."

One young visitor to the market won a £20 Boots voucher. Alice Robbins was selected to open the Christmas window in the shop after a shop window competition run by Mr Rahman and Bognor Regis Town Council.

Sunday also saw an elf amble through the town centre from Paul Inskip Photography in Queensway. Children dressed as elves collected parcels for the town's Foodbank to give out to deserving residents.

Musical accompaniment was provided at the weekend by university students Danielle THomas, 25, and Simon Arthurs, 22.

Saturday also saw them join with the RAFA Choir, while the Salvation Army band also played carols.

THIS Christmas season the Regis Centre have produced a wonderful festive programme filled with music, dance, theatre and, of course, pantomime such as Beauty and the Beast, pictured left.

Spillers Pantomime Productions invite us all to journey with alongside Belle as she embarks on a magical adventure, full of all the wonderful costumes, music and comedy you'd expect from a show like this!

Although there is much to choose from at the Regis Centre throughout December it is worth considering what they are showing in up-coming months.

Between January and May next year the Regis Centre is offering audiences a packed and varied spring programme. From theatre and live music to family events, famous faces, comedy and fundraisers – they’ve got a little something for everyone.

Stand out events include an evening with renowned historian David Starkey on February 14 and entertainment legend Des O’Connor on February18.

David Starkey will be giving a fascinating lecture on the always-popular subject of Henry VIII. Even those with little interest in history will surely become hooked by David's experienced stage-presence and encyclopedic knowledge.

Audiences are then invited to enjoy an evening with the incomparable Des in his brand-new show, celebrating the stage and screen career of this showbusiness legend.

National treasure Richard Digance and the supremely talented Barron Knights will also be making an appearance in April, and acclaimed tenor Daniel Koek, recent star of London’s Les Miserables will be sharing his West End Story on the stage.

For music lovers, there is everything from 70s

glam rock, wonderful nostalgia, top class tributes including Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - plus Big Band music and performances from local orchestras.

Fans of musical theatre will be treated to a wide range of shows such as modern musicals like Legally Blonde and the Dolly Parton smash-hit 9 to 5 The Musical, as well as classics like The King and I and Orpheus in the Underworld.

THere will also be unknown gems like City of Angels, new British hits like Betty Blue Eyes and a wonderful family musical version of Alice in Wonderland.

THe theatre sees the welcome return of several community groups this spring, as well as some new groups to the venue.

So they hope you will join them to welcome Chichester College, FMS, the Samantha Jane Performing Arts, the University of Chichester, the Southdowns Concert Band, Dance House, Bersted Arts, Littlehampton Concert Band and Rainbow Productions to their stage.

Christmas in town 'better than big cities' TOWN centre trader Jharmel Singh has praised Bognor Regis for its Christmas celebrations.

Jharmel said the effort given to the past two weekends in the town put much bigger centres to shame.

"THe town council and the town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, should be proud of what they have done.

"THeir work compares favourably with what happens in centres which are bigger," he said.

"I was busy yesterday (Saturday) when the Christmas market was on with a lot more people than I would normally see - and quite busy today, but I was mobbed when the Christmas lights switch on took place the previous Saturday.

"I've been here five months and it's the busiest day I've had. It wasn't just the regular people who were here. THey were coming from elsewhere.

"THere was a really nice atmosphere.

People were jolly. THey were taking photos of the icicle stiltwalkers and putting them on social media and they probably attracted other people.

"I can't fault the town council and Toyubur for trying to improve the town."

Jharmel's business, JSL Fashion, is

based at Southampton, and has a semipermanent spot on the vacant site between Burtons and Greggs on the London Road precinct.

He has to put up and take down his structure every day but is in town for the next two years.

Last week's Christmas market saw Father Christmas host story times in Bright House, Greggs, Kids Stuff Toys, Claire's and Hays Travel.

Among those who enjoyed the session in Claire's was Robbie Batten-Johnson, aged two.

His mum, Sophie Johnson, 22, of Bognor Regis, also took along nine-month-old Romeo BattenJohnson. She said: "THis is an amazing event and really good for the community. I moved down here from Lewisham in South London, after graduating from the University of Chichester in English and history, a few months ago and they didn't do anything like this here.

"It's fabulous to have events like this. THere is so much to do in this town, like Rox, but it's always good to have more."

A PARTIALLY sighted Bognor Regis woman has one of the satisfied users of a successful Talking Books service.

Shirley Buck has enjoyed the tomes made available by the RNIB for those with vision difficulties.

THe service has attracted 11,000 new users for a 30 per cent increase in members since the charity made it free last November.

Shirley, 78, who was diagnosed with muscular degeneration in 2004, contacted the RNIB about Talking Books as her mother had used the service after she was diagnosed with glaucoma.

"RNIB's Talking Books service has been able to replace one of most enjoyable hobbies - reading books," said Shirley.

"THere is such a wide choice of books and the readers are excellent.

"Now I can no longer read books, Talking Books has given me back my joy of reading."

More than 25,000 Talking Books are available in formats such as USB, CD and MP3 download. Added to giant print and Braille books, its accessible library numbers 60,000 items as the largest of its kind in Europe. Anyone who has difficulty reading standard print books can join.

Lee is a winner for building work SITE manager Lee White has been named one of Britain's best builders for his work in North Bersted.

Lee won a Seal of Excellence in the second round of this year's NHBS Pride in the Job Awards.

Known as the 'Oscars of the house building industry', winning an award is an exceptional achievement.

Lee was selected from more than 16,000 UK site managers and was recognised at a Brighton ceremony for his work at Bersted Park for Berkeley Homes.

Steve Catt, the NHBC's regional director, congratulated Lee on his win.

He said: "Pride in the Job is now firmly established as a significant

proof of distinction for the best site managers in the UK. "It's been a tough year of judging starting way back in July 2015 and it's a long hard road to win a Pride in the Job award. THe awards recognise site managers who know how to go one stage better, whose hard work ensures we live in high quality homes and rewards dedication and expertise.

"By recognising exceptional site managers like Lee, Pride in the Job promotes continuous improvement in the quality of new homes, year on year, for homeowners and their families to enjoy."

TWO Felpham Community College students represented Britain in a Eurowide translation competition.

Joana Soares and Martin Smit, both in Year 13, were chosen to enter the annual Juvenes Translators event.

THis is held by the European Commission at the same time across all the countries in the European Union.

It took place in 751 schools to match the number of seats in the European Parliament.

All the students who took part had to translate a challenging text into their strongest language.

Joana translated Portuguese to English and Martin, Spanish to English.

Joana said: "I am studying French and Spanish at A-level and enjoy both subjects. I loved the fact the competition was happening all across Europe at the same time. It makes you feel part of something bigger."

Curriculum leader for languages at the college Matthieu Cauchy-Duval said: "THe aim of the competition is to point out the importance of multilingualism, cultural understanding and highlight the benefits of studying a language."

THe students and the college are eagerly awaiting the results of the competition next February.

THe winners will go to Brussels to receive their certificates from the European Commission.

Packed with jokes and comedic songs, the show became the longest running off-broadway production in history, Since then Nunsense has spawned six spin-off shows, including Nuncrackers which is

being brought to the Regis Centre by the talented cast and crew of the Boxstep THeatre Company.

THe Little Sisters of Hoboken return to the stage in this show, this time they have constructed a television studio in their basement in order to launch their own Christmas TV special.

However, there are problems from the beginning as Sister Mary, Leo the resident ballerina, suffers an accident backstage, throwing their ballet performances into chaos.

Regardless, the nuns power on through their show in numbers that only become more ridiculous throughout the performance!

Nuncrackers is on for three nights at the Regis Centre, and is a highly enjoyable way to support a local theatre group.

The Community Programme Fundraising Exhibition opens at Pallant House Gallery on 29 November in the Studio. This free exhibition showcases a wonderfully rich and diverse array of artworks produced and donated by 60 artists involved in the Gallery’s Community Programme. All the artworks are for sale at affordable prices and the money raised will be match funded by a private donor. The funds provide essential core funding to keep this highly valued and inclusive programme running. The Community Programme provides opportunities for local people with disabilities, health issues and those who are isolated to follow their art interests and be part of the general life of the Gallery. The focus is on art, not people’s disability or other support needs, and for those involved it can be an important life changing opportunity.

The 2015 fundraising exhibition sold 34 works of art ranging from paintings to prints, raising a total of £1,940. Once again, the Gallery is offering members of the public the opportunity to purchase an original piece of art and, at the same time, support the Gallery’s award-winning Community Programme.

Wines to take your breath away Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

FRIDAY November 25th at Fontwell Racecourse was the spacious venue for a wine-tasting extravaganza where Gusto Wines served up a dégustation par excellence!

I will subsequently select a small selection of the vast array of wines on offer and, although there was an abundance of French wines to taste, I decided to cast my net further afield to Europe and beyond (with one or two notable exceptions).

Who then, pray, are Gusto Wines?

THey are in fact a small family-run independent wine merchant based in Ford and fronted by Simon and Clare Wallace who were recently awarded the prestigious Overall Business of the Year 2016 at the Arun Business Awards, and pride themselves on a very personal and attentive service .

Simon Wallace, pictured above right, hosted table six and I first elected to sample a 2014 Topuku New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and would ascribe to it qualities of an archetypal Sauvignon Blanc (priced at £9.69) being both crisp and fresh with lychee, citrus and gooseberry flavours.

English wines turn out to be a true revelation

On Simon's recommendation I next sampled a Mitchell Clare Valley 2014 Watervale Riesling from Down Under. THis wine took my breath away and resembled a French wine in its composition ably crafted and fermented spontaneously to complete dryness with ambient yeasts muting some of the riesling's aromatic high notes, whilst leaving the intense ,citrusy varietal flavour intact. A crisp, bone dry finish complemented the concentrated rounded flavours and priced at £13.95 this wine is a veritable taste sensation!

Two red wines to savour then beckoned and for chocolate lovers the distinctively bottled Negroamaro Alfredo Rocca Salento priced at £11.99 would tantalise with its deep and dark red colour sporting a complex bouquet of ripe fruits and hints of spice. Produced in Salento, a few

kilometres from the Ionic Coast, the wine exudes a velvety roundness with an oaky note-well worth a try!

Finally acquiescing to the lure of French vinification I happened upon a 2013 Vidal Fleury Saint-Joseph from the Rhône Valley which fully justified its £21.99 valuation, being delightfully smooth with vanilla and spice to the fore and, in my view, a superbly crafted Rhône wine whose taste lingers seductively and with its peppery overtones is a wine to savour!

For high spenders the Champagne Gosset Grande Réserve at a princely sum of £41.99 is everything a good Champagne should be and the Frapin VSO Cognac divine (£44.99)!

Gusto Wines is well worth a visit and you will receive great attention at Ford Lane Business Park if you so choose!

MOST definitely not a true wine-expert like the wonderful Mr Lury, I was at least certain of my personal favourites at the Gusto Wines tasting night.

In a surprise turn, these came in the form of a collection of English wines made locally at the Highdown Vineyard on Littlehampton Road.

Owner Aly Englefield was at the event to offer up a delicious choice of whites, reds and rosés.

First I sampled the Southdown White which is regarded by Aly as their most accessible of wines. It had a fresh, fruity flavour created by the blend of different grapes. Aly described it as "A good representation of English wine."

THe other Highdown whites provided plenty of diversity for the palate. THe Mother's Share Chardonnay burst onto my taste buds with a very sharp yet lean quality. However, it was the dry Bacchus that truly caught my attention with its delightfully English elderflower and

gooseberry hues, coupled with a fresh acidity to finish.

THe Chalk Ridge Red also did a lot to impress. Highly distinguishable from the other foreign imports available that evening, it provided a much softer flavour, perhaps more appropriate for those usually not so enamoured by red wine.

Overall though my choice wine for the evening was, even more surprisingly, a rosé. I relished every drop of the Millers Reserve Rosé that was fruity yet not overly sweet, and brisk yet not acidic.

Its strawberry aromas transported me for a moment back to a summer's afternoon, something most welcome on a November night.

Highdown Vineyard are proud to be changing popular opinion on English wines. But Aly was fervent that their wines be enjoyed for their taste and not because of their locality. She said: "I want people to buy it because it's good, not just because it's local."

CHOCOLATE LOG INGREDIENTS • 85g golden caster sugar • 85g plain flour (less 2 tbsp) • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • ½ tsp baking powder

FOR THE FILLING & ICING • 50g butter • 140g dark chocolate, broken into squares • 1 tbsp golden syrup • 284ml pot double cream • 200g icing sugar, sifted • 2-3 extra-strong mint • icing sugar and holly sprigs to decorate - ensure you remove the berries before serving

METHOD 1.

Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6.

Grease and line a 23 x 32cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Beat the eggs and sugar together with an electric whisk for about 8 mins until thick and creamy.

2.

Mix the flour, cocoa and baking powder together, then sift onto the egg mixture. Fold in very carefully, then pour into the tin. Now tip the tin from side to side to spread the mixture into the corners. Bake for 10 mins.

3.

Lay a sheet of baking parchment on the work surface. When the cake is ready, tip it onto the parchment, peel off the lining paper, then roll the cake up from its longest edge with the paper inside.

Leave to cool.

4.

To make the icing, melt the butter and chocolate together in a bowl over a pan of hot water.

Take from the heat and stir in the syrup and 5 tbsp cream. Beat in the icing sugar until smooth. Whisk the remaining cream until it holds its shape. Unravel the cake, spread the cream over the top, scatter over the

crushed mints, if using, then carefully roll up again into a log.

5.

Cut a thick diagonal slice from one end of the log. Lift the log on to a plate, then arrange the slice on the side with the diagonal cut against the cake to make a branch.

6.

Spread the icing over the log and branch (don’t cover the ends), then use a fork to mark the icing to give the effect of tree bark.

Scatter with unsifted icing sugar to resemble snow, and decorate with holly.

Best hangover tips.

'Tis the season!

WE’VE all done it. You know what I am talking about...

Lying in bed the next morning after a great night out consisting of dancing on the tables, possibly snogging a work colleague that you have fancied for the entire year, ordering shots with everyone at the bar because somehow, at that point in the evening it seemed like a really good idea.

Your head is pounding, your throat is dry, the nausea is awful (you feel lucky if you haven’t been sick yet) and there is absolutely no way you can even entertain opening the curtain and letting even a millimetre of light in as it feels like it could burn a hole in your eyes.

Yes, it is the season...the season to party! Works parties, friend’s parties, family gatherings! It goes on and on in the month of December. But why do some of us never learn that hangovers can be one of the worst feelings on the planet?

THere are a few little tricks to drinking that could just help you reduce that ‘next day’ sickness and those involve learning which drinks are less likely to cause such awful hangovers.

Of course, not drinking at all would be the best option, but, as that’s unlikely to happen with the majority, its best to know your facts!

THese are the rules to play by: Alcoholic beverages that are light in colour, such as gin, light rum, vodka or white wine leave you with less of a hangover, especially if you only stick to one type of alcohol all evening.

Do not mix your drinks - it’s an age-old rule! If you start blending dark liquors, such as mixing red wine with brandy,

you'll be ingesting different varieties of congeners from both, setting yourself up for a worse hangover than if you'd stuck to only one type of spirit.

Some congener-laden spirits to avoid in excess are, brandy, red wine, bourbon, dark rum and whiskey.

In case you don’t know, congeners are a byproduct of some types of fermentation.

Sometimes they're impurities in spirits, and other times they're trace elements added to stabilise or flavour them. THese substances vary in different types of alcoholic beverages, but when they get into your system they cause or heighten some of the symptoms associated with hangovers.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which makes your body work hard to conserve water after the binging is over.

THis is what results in headaches and nausea. Along with all that liquid loss, you also lose important trace chemicals like magnesium and potassium, which will make you feel tired and lethargic.

THe best hangover cure is not a greasy fry up followed by copious amounts of coffee, as that will dehydrate you further!

Initially, what you need is hydration, toxin removal and anti-oxidants in abundance to give you your natural energy back so you don’t crash and burn later in the day.

If you haven’t already got one, get yourself a Nutri-bullet, or a similar type blender. THrow in some alkalizing, toxin removing and anti-oxidant making remedies and sip through a straw.

Admittedly a little effort is needed in order to achieve this, but it is worth it.

You are worth it!

First of all get yourself some coconut water. It contains anti-oxidants and

electrolytes, specifically potassium.

Anti-oxidants and electrolytes are key components of any hangover cure, as is potassium for hydration. THen throw in any number of the following natural, immune boosting, hydrating and antioxidant ingredients such as pineapple, celery, parsley, ginger, lemon, limes, berries and peppermint. You can use chlorella (the super food powder) in your smoothie to help remove some of the toxins and pop some milk thistle drops in as an added measure. Milk thistle stimulates the regeneration of cells damaged by alcohol.

Charcoal tablets are also an amazing remedy to have on stand by. If you take

them when you get home rather than waiting until the next morning, its even better as they absorb toxins and help remove out of the body. THen you can get on with your Christmas preparations without feeling so bad, enjoy!

MARKET organisers Chris Warden and Michele Redford are nearing £1,000 fundraising for charity.

THey have raised £938.17 from the tombola they hold during each of the Crafty Pint Markets in the function room of THe Waverley pub in Bognor Regis.

THeir past two markets of 2016 brought in £100 which will be used for Granddad's Community Wrap which was held yesterday at THe Laburnum Centre.

Chris and Michele are pictured above presenting the GREAT news for anyone being stalked this week – male, female, LGBT or professionals, such as doctors, who are targeted by patients. Stalking and harassment includes behaviour that happens two or more times, directed at or towards you by another person, which causes you to feel alarmed or distressed or to fear that violence might be used against you.

What makes the problem particularly hard to cope with is that it can go on for a long period of time, making you feel constantly anxious and afraid. Sometimes the problem can build up slowly and it can take a while for you to realise that you are caught up in an ongoing campaign of abuse.

Stalkers will be hit with court orders from the moment their victims raise the alarm under new plans. Police are to get new powers to apply for measures to stop people stalking strangers or acquaintances before it spirals out of control.

Suspected stalkers could be ordered to stay away from their targets or have their internet restricted even if they have not yet been arrested or charged.

Other conditions could see stalkers required to attend a rehabilitation programme or seek treatment for mental health issues. Breaching the orders will be a criminal offence with a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

THe Stalking Protection Orders aim to protect victims while investigators gather evidence for potential prosecution. THe new crackdown is aimed particularly at "stranger stalking" before it escalates. It builds on Domestic Violent Protection Orders, which were rolled out in 2014, to clamp down on abusive partners and spouses.

Statistics suggest one in five women and one in 10 men will be affected by stalking in their lifetime. THere were 4168 stalking offences recorded in the last year, up by 32 per cent on the previous year. Locally, we have given out 12 ‘stalking packs’ in the last six months.

Of course, for many, stalking is often part of the domestic abuse they suffered and, when they have left or ended the relationship, the partner carries on the abuse in the form or stalking or harassment. If it is happening to you, it is important that you report it.

WADAR is an animal rescue which cares and protects a wide range of animals.

A DISPLAY of prints and multiples by the contemporary Scottish artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) will go on display at Pallant House Gallery this autumn. THe artist, best known for his celebrated garden at Little Sparta near Edinburgh, created work which engaged with themes drawn from classical writers such as Virgil and connects the display with the Gallery’s major autumn exhibition, The Mythic Method: Classicism in British Art 1920-1950.

Finlay’s practice was unusual in that it encompassed a variety of different genres and media. He expressed poetry, philosophy, history, gardening and landscape design in material forms such as cards, books, prints, stone inscriptions, wood sculptures and even room installations and garden environments. His famous work at Little Sparta, referencing classical poetry and philosophy through garden sculptures and carvings, explores the contrast between nature and culture, wild gardens and the act of gardening.

Originating from his poetic background, Finlay’s creative relationship with language is the element that ties all his works together. Finlay’s concern with the power of language is seen in the words and phrases, playfully invented or borrowed, that are inscribed onto real objects in his work. THe sometimes enigmatic combination of these words and objects act as suggestive and, at times, witty metaphors that direct the viewer’s thinking to wider political themes and comments on society.

THe exhibition includes Finlay’s important sculptural installation Four Blades (1987), four pieces of slate carved to look like guillotine blades inscribed with quotes from notable figures of the French Revolution and himself, revealing Finlay’s fascination with the aesthetics, philosophy and politics of neoclassical thought.

Using classical images as models for portraying modern society, Finlay’s pieces comment on the possibilities of revolution, freedom and equality. He even envisages his recurrent garden theme as a levelling method for society and equates the gardener with death, a comment on how death eventually cuts short everyone’s life. A group of his prints shown in this exhibition were made in collaboration with other artists and published by the Wild Hawthorn Press, an organisation that Finlay founded in 1964 with Jessie McGuffie Sheeler.

THe juxtaposition between the antique and the modern is a theme carried throughout the Gallery’s autumn exhibition programme, especially in the major exhibition The Mythic Method: Classicism in British Art 1920-1950, which explores how Modern British artists drew on classical myth and ideals in a ‘return to order’ following the First World War. Similarly, an ambitious installation by the Argentinian-born artist Pablo Bronstein provides the latest contemporary installation in the Gallery’s 18th century townhouse. Bronstein has created a series of panoramic wallpapers featuring heavily decorated, historic architectural landscapes.

Ian Hamilton Finlay: Neoclassicism and Revolution will take place until February 19, 2017, and will be exhibited in Room 17.

On February 9, 2017, there will be a talk on ‘Ian Hamilton Finlay and Little Sparta’ by Prof. Stephen Bann.

Road has many interesting and historical links

Town centre thoroughfare has a past which is worth a look

f One of the road's main buildings AS WE travel around the town, there are quite a number of roads that today seem to be used mainly for parking, or as through roads without us paying much attention to our surroundings, or even considering the area’s history. One such is Sudley Road; which runs along ‘the back of Boots,’ has street parking and is quite central when shopping.

THe road was originally named to commemorate the 3rd Earl of Arran, Viscount Sudley of Gore, who for a number of years was a landowner in Bognor. THe road was originally built through what was in 1878 only a meadow; it contains a number of interesting and historical buildings. Prior to this there was only a short stretch of highway open for the public from the High Street.

If we start at the northern end of the road today we find the Recital Centre, which was previously a church, run by the Christian Scientists, which was opened on June 23rd 1957.

At this site in August 1942, one of the major bombings of the Second World War took place, and one house simply vanished into a huge crater. THe premises were specifically designed to fit into the area and were

constructed from red Roman roof tiles from Bridgwater in Somerset.

Outside the building, there is an interesting display of multi-coloured tiles and these came from Ockley in Surrey. THe church contained many other interesting features, which were a far cry from the previous site of the church in Argyle Circus, which they had occupied from 1930.

THis road was also known for the rear view of St. John’s Church, one of the most popular churches in the town. THe Vicarage was situated in Sudley Road, and part of the flint wall from the church site can still be seen around the car park of Boot’s and WH Smith, which seems to be such a small reminder of such a prominent building in the town centre.

During the 1970s, this church was demolished and replaced by the shops we know today. On the east side of the road is Twyford’s which, from 1936, was a small private maternity hospital for a number of years.

Still on the east side we have the Bognor Club, which is certainly situated in a very historic building. THis building was erected in 1837 and was the Assembly Rooms for the

town. THe early short section of road was in reality to allow people to visit these premises.

By 1893, the general meeting of the Club stated that they were ‘able to report that they had negotiated the lease for the premises'.

THe town council then occupied these premises for a number of years and it was also used for entertainment purposes. In 1886 the building underwent considerable alterations including the insertion of a small wrought iron gallery which contained the word 'love' worked into the ironwork, for no apparent reason.

During the 1950s there were numerous reports in the local press with regard to the ‘changing face’ of Sudley Road.

Much of this had resulted from the change of use of the good residential premises into office properties. However I was interested to read in one report that this road was now to be considered for 'professional use' and it was considered also to be one of the main bus routes, due to the fact that '12 buses per hour' passed along the road. THe press reported that it would never be suitable for private residences again!

At a local tribunal in 1953 which was reporting on rent reductions they remarked Sudley Road was a ‘most desirable road in the town for offices.’ THe report continued

that there was a good mix of professions with solicitors, turf commission, and professional people.

During the 1960s there were also plans for the removal of some premises and the building of blocks of flats. However these were rejected, at that time, due to safety reasons and future town developments.

Further along the road there was another church, the United National Spiritualist Church which was built in 1961, and is still well used.

Previously this church had occupied a site in Argyle Circus, as did so many groups of this nature. THe local church was founded in 1940 and was developed over the coming years, until finally they had a large enough congregation and building fund to allow them to develop into these new premise, in the centre of the town.

THe next prominent building is that of Bradlaw House. It was originally called St. David’s around 1905. THis imposing building has been the home to a variety of trades and professions.

According to the 1953 Kelly’s Directory Mrs. NB Bradlaw was still in residence alongside a photographer and a turf accountant. By 1964 it was occupied by a dental surgeon and chartered accountant, with an office for an

On the opposite side of the road there was a shop that for a number of years was a very popular store, that of Coplestone House. It was originally part of a Regency Terrace built in the 1820s by William Kimber Wonham, one of the town’s speculators.

It was built to match and fit in with the outward appearance of the Bognor Club. THe Sudley Terrace facing into the High Street, was built in 1827. By 1903 No. 4 was the home of the Copelstone Bakery, who proclaimed that only ‘pure butter and other carefully selected ingredients were used in their high class cakes'.

At this time it would appear that Bognor felt itself to be cosmopolitan and their advertising included this French phrase, 'Les orders solent rescues en Francais.' Eventually the bakers left and the premises were taken over

by Miss Lillian Unwin who was to open a millinery and blouse shop. For a number of years it was possible to see her name depicted

in tiles on the floor of the store entrance.

Eventually in 1946 the store was taken over

by Bernard Lush, who with his wife was to develop the store. THey expanded into No. 3 and within the next ten years expanded even further when they had an extension built into Sudley Road. THis store eventually sold fashion, sportswear, lingerie etc. THey also sold clothes specifically for teenagers.

Over the years this store built up both an excellent reputation with its own clientele.

A number of people with whom I have discussed this store have vivid memories of their London fashions and the fact that it was quite a high-class shop for the town.

Another lady remembered having an account with the store, she did say that could not afford to buy anything there, but she did have an account!

Next time you decide to park in Sudley Road, just take the time to have a look around at a road that has many interesting and historical connections. I am sure that in the future we shall revisit this road.

(2pm) THe Blues showed their true colours last week, registering a convincing 27-6 bonus point win away at Guildford.

Hopes are high that Rob Lawrence's men can put in a repeat performance at Oaklands Park tomorrow when they welcome the Essex side. A win would put clear daylight between third-bottom Chi and Colchester, who sit directly below them in the National League 3 London table.

Roger Gould, the club's press officer, said: "Blues are now set on their clear mission to climb away from the relegation threat.

"THe return from injury of inspirational Chris Johnson helped the pack to be a strong welded unit in both the tight and loose.

"THe quick service and long touch kicks from Henry Anscombe earned territory and apart from the first ten minutes and the last five, the mid-table Surrey team were outplayed."

IN the run up to Christmas, the 'Sandy Carter Memorial' Mixed Pairs knockout took place at the Newtown Social Club.

26 pairs turned up to compete, but last years champions were a no-show.

THe first semi-final saw Tracey Reeves & Ben Todd take on Michelle Skeites & Adam Hall. A close first leg saw Hall miss double 12 for a ton plus out-shot, and Skeites hit the double 6 to take the leg.

THe second leg saw Reeves hit 95, but Skeites & Hall were more consistent, and Skeites took out 39 in two darts to take the place in the final.

But it was Chi who made the breakthrough with the returning Johnson powering over from five yards out.

THe home side replied with a penalty shortly after. But it was the Blues again who had the cutting edge when Johnson crossed for his second just before half-time. THe break came and Chi were 10-6 up.

Into the second period, and the visitor's pack continued where they left off. A lineout led to a scrum and a big surge.

THe back row drove on and the whole pack shoved as a unit for lock Alex Grace to press down under the posts. It was converted by Taff Davies, who followed it up with a further penalty.

THe Blues sealed the bonus point win when a further five metre drive maul saw Grace fall short, but Tom Belcher followed it up to touch down.

THe final whistle came and coach Rob Lawrence looked delighted with the five point win, his side's first since the start of October.

THe hope for all at Oaklands Park is the next victory will not take so long.

Sofija strikes gold in Olympic venue TALENTED trampolinist Sofija Kalnicenko was bouncing with joy after claiming gold in the national league finals.

THe youngster was ranked number one in the 11/12-year-olds category going into the competition at London's Olympic Park.

On the big stage she beat performances from 76 others to take top spot, much to the delight of everyone at the Dragonflyers club where she trains.

Linda O'Leary, coach of the Bognor-based club, said: "Kalnicenko performed her high difficulty routines of double and twisting somersaults with courage, determination, power and accuracy to hold onto her top place ranking and secure first place under pressure."

THe victory rounded off a successful season for the talented youngster, which includes two international finals and also making the last eight of the national development finals both as an individual and as part of the southern region team.

Kalnichenko's Olympic performance was

backed up by team mates Libby Morton , Anya Johnston and Izzy Hauxwell.

THe girls all increased their difficulty tariff from qualifying by adding double somersaults.

Morton (9/10yrs), who was ranked 13th, moved up four places to take 9th place.

Johnston (15/16yrs) finished tenth while Hauxwell placed a credible 19th.

Linda said: "It was a fantastic end to the club's season."

THe Dragon Flyers Trampoline Club has been running for just over ten years and has more than 50 members in the Portsmouth and Chichester/Bognor area.

Training takes place Monday to THursday at THe Regis School in Westloats Lane.

Most of the members are aged between five and 19 although there is a growing number of adults taking up the sport.

THe second leg saw Grinstead hit 108 & Blackwood hit 128. Once again Grinstead bust their out-shot but this time Blackwood hit the winning double to get to the final.

THe final saw Blackwood win the bullseye, and again start with a 140. Later in the leg Hall scored a ton, but that still left them trailing.

After 26 darts between them, Blackwood hit 52 in two darts to take the first leg. THe second leg saw Blackwood start with a ton and late follow that with 102, but Skeites hit 85 & 125, while Hall hit a ton, taking them in to the lead.

One dart was all that was needed for Hall to take the second leg in a total of 25 darts.

Hall then proceeded to start the last leg with a ton and 81, giving them the early lead. Blackwood followed with 85 & 100, but they were still behind. Hall tried first for the double, but missed, as did Skeites.

THis gave Grinstead a chance, but she could only leave double top. From here both teams started missing, either busting their scores or leaving odd numbers. Skeites & Hall ended up on double 1, while Blackwood had left 3 for Grinstead. Grinstead stepped up, with the second dart hit single 1, and then followed it with the double, to take the leg and the title of the 'Sandy Carter Memorial' Mixed Pairs Champions 2016/17.

Tone Zone lap up winter sun FIFTEEN Tone Zone Runners lapped up the sunshine in southern Spain to take part in the Benidorm Half Marathon.

First to finish for the club was Simon Gill in 1.17, although he was disappointed with that time as he slowed in the second half of the race.

THe majority of the runners finished within 12 minutes of each other but one runner who was just pleased to finish was Glenn Penfold.

With only six miles run in the last eight months he decided to give the race a try. THe first eight miles went well but then the lack of running took its toll but he struggled on to complete the run in just under two hours.

Afterwards he said that the last four miles were the toughest of his life but was over the moon to have completed the half marathon.

Elsewhere and at the Hayling Island 10 mile, Jessica THomson and Nathan Bilham continued their great recent form, both achieving personal bests of 1.15.47 and 1.25.33

respectively.

THere were also good efforts from Robert Little (1.31.14), Stuart THomson (1.34.19), Paul Stevenson (1.34.22), David Sinclair (1.35.02), and Sarah Spurr (1.48.36).

Joan Woolley ran in the Martello Marathon where she came first in her age group in 5.19.53. THen last month Paul Coe embarked on an amazing challenge to run 3 marathons in consecutive days - completing all three in around 4 hours 20 minutes.

To round off a remarkable effort, Paul then took part in THe Mouth to Mouth Ultra marathon, which is a 27.5 mile run from the River Adur in Shoreham to the Arun in Littlehampton.

He completed it to make it four marathons in eight days and his 41st in total.

A special mention should also be made to Tony Holcombe, who took part in the six-hour multi lap event known as the Winter Festive Frolic in Staunton Country Park..

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea is on the look out for additions to his squad, despite the Lions returning to form in a battling draw with runaway leaders Shoreham.

THe Nyetimber Lane side have struggled in recent weeks with two successive losses seeing them fall to third in the SCFL Premier.

But a spirited show in front of a bumper crowd saw the Lions hold the Musselmen to a 1-1 draw last weekend.

Shea now wants his side to push on - with the aim of closing the eight point gap on Shoreham in the league and lifting some silverware in the cup competitions.

And he told the Post, to do this, he was not scared of making additions in order to achieve the club's goals.

Shea said: "Watch this space. We're always looking to improve the squad and hopefully we will have some news on that front in the coming days."

THree players who are due to return in the coming weeks are the injured trio of Terrell Lewis, Johan Vandriel and Ryan Cox. All three got a run out in a training match

against Sidlesham on Tuesday and Shea admitted having them all back "felt like new signings".

Focus tomorrow shifts to the league, where Pagham must travel to Worthing United (3pm). Despite beating the Mavericks twice already this season, Shea warned against complacency.

THen Tuesday sees the Lions return to Nyetimber Lane, taking on Loxwood in the quarter final of the RUR charity cup.

Shea said: "Both sides have improved in recent weeks so we will need to be at our best.

"We're trying to take one game at a time and while we all want to do well in the cups, we need to keep up our league form."

Sids still chasing Bosham Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk SIDLESHAM are looking to keep up the pressure on Bosham at the top of the SCFL Division Two as both sides continue their remarkable unbeaten runs.

Both have been near unbeatable all season - and at the halfway point sit one and two in the league.

Bosham are five points clear at the top, winning 13 and drawing once in their 14 league games so far..

But Sidlesham, under the direction of new manager Daren Pearce, have not tasted defeat in 16 and continue to keep up the pressure on their neighbours.

THe two sides are yet to play each other, with the first meeting planned for Boxing Day. Before then, the Sids will be able to close the gap - as this weekend the Robins are in cup action, hosting fellow SCFL Division Two side Westfield in the Sussex Intermediate Cup quarter final tomorrow (1.30pm).

A win for Andy Probee's side would put them through to a semi final against lower league opposition and within touching distance of lifting the trophy for the first time in the club's 115 year history.

SELSEY will be hoping to continue their march up the table after bouncing back to form.

THe Blues have been consistently inconsistent this season - winning six, drawing five and losing four of their 15 league games so far.

But a 2-0 home win against Seaford Town at home last weekend took Selsey into the top half of the SCFL Division One. And with up to five games in hand on those around them, hopes are high at the Bunn Leisure Stadium that the side can push on.

Two first half strikes from Joseph Clarke and Morgan Forry were enough to give Selsey all three points against a Seaford side which has struggled of late.

Next up for Steve Bailey's team is a trip to

Crawley tomorrow to play Oakwood (3pm).

THe home side are without a win in three, albeit having played some of the best sides in the division in recent weeks.

Sitting three places and three points behind Selsey, Oakwood will feel as though the visit of the Blues will give them a chance to register a victory.

But Bailey's side are full of confidence - with a recent 5-1 hammering at home to Lagney the only league game lost in November.

During that time, Forry has been on fire, netting five in five and helping his side slowly move up the table.

And with the playing surface at Oakwood among the best in the whole county league, there will be no excuses for Selsey not to continue their attractive brand of football.

Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk ROCKS boss Jamie Howell has praised his "top class" goalkeeper Dan Lincoln - and thanked a Bognor old boy for bringing him to Nyewood Lane.

THe former Reading Academy prospect signed for Howell's side in October - and since then has firmly established himself as the club's number one.

A string of fine performances was capped off on Tuesday, when Lincoln made a series of saves - including a penalty - in the Rocks' 1-0 win over Harrow.

Speaking to the Post after Lincoln's man of the match performance, Howell said his impact has been "absolutely top class" - and revealed his arrival at Nyewood Lane was due to former stopper Grant Smith.

Howell said: "Dan has been brilliant since day one. He will play at a far higher level. It's so important to have a good goalkeeper, as even the top sides find out to their cost.

"We were struggling in that area and I spoke to Grant who said he had a mate who couldn't get a club but would suit us to the ground in the way that we play.

"He got us the goalkeeper and, so far, Dan has just been brilliant."

Lincoln's man of the match performance was his first since signing for the club.

But, during that time, he has marshalled the defence well, keeping five clean sheets in 14 matches.

Some Bognor fans were worried when last month Lincoln signed dual-registration forms at National League side Braintree Town.

But Howell said that was just a short term fix and Lincoln, who has also spent time at Oxford United and Met Police, remains a Rocks player - for now.

He said: "Braintree were short at one stage but don't think he has any intention of going up there full time.

"He is our goalkeeper but like anything, if he got an opportunity he will, like all the players, move on and we will be very grateful for the work he has done."

Lincoln and the rest of the squad now have a week off as planned opponents Leiston are in FA Trophy action.

Howell said the rest was welcomed by all at Nyewood Lane, as it would allow his injuryhit squad to get some much needed R and R. He said: "THe lads are just dead on their feet and it's difficult for them as I'm bringing them back from injury quicker than what they should be to help the squad.

"THey are not match fit and some of them are just doing it on willpower alone.

"It is a good chance for us to regroup. We have achieved far more than anyone thought we would have done so far.".
