Extra lorries plan opposed by residents THOUSANDS of extra lorries a year could be heading to a Pagham farm. THe stream of nearly 5,000 more HGVs will be used as transport for a planned production building at Sefter Farm. Barfoots of Botley has applied for planning permisison to Arun District Council for the steel-framed industrial type structure of 7,944sq m. Twothirds will be for the production area to prepare packaged fresh vegetables - like courgette spaghetti and butternut noodles - for the major supermarkets THe site's angry neighbours have joined together to oppose the potential scheme. THey are set to seek expert advice to challenge the planning statements made by Barfoots for the latest of its expansion plans at the rural site. One of the opponents, Joerg Arnhold, of Rookery Farmhouse on Pagham Road, said: "Enough is enough. Barfoots have gained permission to build new greenhouses, which we opposed, and now this. "THey are going to be increasing the floorspace on the farm by 56% with an extra 5,230 square metres added to the existing 9,500sq m. "We want to gather as much support as we can to oppose this application." THey have set up an email address to

rally opponents: barfootsobjections@ mail.com One of the documents produced by Barfoot's planning agent, Advoco Planning, states: "Whilst the proposed development will increase overall output, its principal purpose is to allow new processes to be employed and to provide a wider range of products in response to consumer demands. "Accordingly, despite a significant increase in overall floor area, the total increase in the number of HGVs will be 15%. "....the proposed increase of 15% would take the average hourly HGV traffic from 12 to less than 14, which is not considered to be significant." THis hourly rise equals 112 more HGVs a day, 94 a week assuming seven day working, and some 4,900 a year on top of the existing 39,300 HGVs. Another objector to the scheme, Dale Stephens, said: "THe number of HGVs going to and from Sefter Farm is non-stop. THey are working 24/7. THe articulated lorries very often turn round at the Sefter Road junction, when they overshoot the farm, and they stack up there as well. A proposed minibus service for Turn to page four

Jock's visit is a complete mystery to town's banks by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 DEMENTIA patient Jock Andrews held Bognor Regis banks to account. Jock took to the town centre to find out how the financial institutions rated for being dementia friendly. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, Jock - pictured second from left above agreed to become the town's first mystery shopper with the condition. He found the experience varied but said most of the banks were able to support him. Following a visit to Barclays Bank in the High Street, he said: "Staff were very helpful. "Customers were having a laugh and a joke with staff and being helped and supported with their banking requests." THe day was organised by Bognor Dementia Alliance and the area's Alzheimer's Society on a Friday this month. Representatives from West Sussex and Coastal MIND, Crossroads Care, Alive Activities and Intercounty Nursing and Care Services also took part. THe event was part of Bognor Dementia Action Alliance's goal of improving the lives of people with dementia in their community through increased awareness of dementia across the area. THe Aldingbourne Trust's Martha Pusey, who leads the alliance, said: "It was a successful day to discover the quality of

service for people with dementia. "It was a useful experience for both us and the banks. THere was a lot to learn from the feedback." Tom Wilkins, the user involvement officer of the Alzheimer's Society, said: "It was interesting to see the different support available to people with dementia in Bognor Regis during our first-ever secret shopper experience in the town. "THe banks visited appreciated the opportunity to meet Jock and find out what he felt was needed to support people with dementia and their carers." Each banks which was visited will be sent detailed information about its approach. THe Dementia Action Alliance was launched in May 2015 and aims to develop Bognor Regis as a dementiafriendly community. Part of this work involves offering support to the area's organisations and businesses to help them to become more dementia friendly. Free Dementia Friends information sessions are available for them to find out more. THe sessions last an hour and give those who take part more understanding about dementia and the support that can benefit people with dementia and their carers. Sessions can be booked with Martha at marthap@aldingbourne.org. More details about the alliance are also available from her. See page 31

Long-term jobless given hope with new lottery and Euro help LONG-TERM unemployed residents of Bognor Regis are among those to be offered help with a new scheme. THe Building Better Opportunities programme is the first of its kind to support people who have been out of work for months. It is being run by Royal British Legion Industries, which has an office in Sudley Road and its partners and will take effect across the Coast 2 Capital local enterprise partnership area. THis covers West Sussex, Brighton, Croydon and parts of Surrey. Latest statistics from RBLI show 350 people will be eligible for help under

the scheme. THe work is being funded by £326,650 from the Big Lottery and the European Social Fund to help tackle the poverty and social exclusion faced by the UK's most disadvantaged people. Steve Sherry, the RBLI's chief executive, said: "Our long-term expertise (since 1919) has evolved and today helps individuals identify and overcome perceived barriers to work, helping them to break the long-term cycle of unemployment." THe project provides personalised support, help to achieve qualifications and life skills. Details from www.rbli. co.uk or 01293 223978.

KIND-HEARTED Maisie Skinner had her first hair cut to help her disabled friend from Aldwick just a day after she came out of hospital. Maise, five, pictured left on the front page, shrugged off a five-day stay in St Richard's Hospital to have 30cms cut from her light brown locks. She hopes the resulting bob will raise £500 for the Dream to Dance appeal for Erin Aldridge. Erin's parents are fundraising for £40,000 to enable their five-year-old daughter to be able to walk for the first time. Maisie's mum, Becky Skinner, of West Wittering, said her daughter was happy to help. "She only came out of St Richards's Hospital yesterday but she still wanted to go ahead with this. Even when she was in hospital, she was asking about having her hair cut," she said. "Maisie has TRAPS - or periodic fever syndrome - with really high temperatures, stomach aches and pains. "She was born with it. It is something to do with her genes but it is a very rare condition. Only one in a million people are diagnosed with it. "Maisie had to go into hospital for the first time with it for five days because her temperature was over 40degC. "Once her temperature has gone down, she goes back to normal. We try not to let it affect her life at all." Maisie watched as stylist Tiffany Hunt cut off her long hair and replaced it with a one length bob which she blow dried. She donated her hair to the Little Princesses Trust to make wigs for seriously ill children. It took about 45 minutes at the Creations salon in Chichester for Tiffany to create Maisie's new look. "We do occasionally get people coming in wanting to have a lot of hair cut," said Tiffany. "We always suggest they donate their hair to the Little Princesses Trust."

Maisie and Erin are both pupils at Southway Primary School in Bognor Regis. Maisie's time in the salon chair will take the Erin's Dream to Dance appeal just under the half-way mark of £20,000. Her mum and dad, Ash and Victoria Aldridge, launched the appeal about six months ago after a promised NHS operation to correct Erin's quadriplegic cerebral palsy was withdrawn because of a lack of funding. THis left them having to find £40,000 to pay for the selective dorsal rhizotomy procedure and Erin's aftercare. Ash, of Gossamer Lane, said: "We are really grateful for Maisie's help. We have had a couple of big donations come in recently. Southway School raised £2,500 for Erin and three dance groups also raised £400-500. "THis all brings us closer to the £26,000 we need to pay for the actual operation for Maisie. I expect we will be able to reach that at the end of this year or early next year. "Once we have that money, we can give the surgeons the go ahead. Now we are paying for it, it's a case of first come, first served and there will be no waiting list." THe surgeons - who are likely to be based at Bristol - will need three months to carry out all the necessary preoperation tests to determine the exact scope of the operation Erin will need to release her muscles. Once that spasticity has been relaxed, Ash said, Erin will be able to walk immediately. But she will require another orthopaedic operation soon afterwards to complement the improvements. "THat second operation is likely to be carried out a week later," he said. "It needs to be performed very quickly but, until Erin has had her first operation, the extent of the second one won't be known." THe procedures will need to be followed by extensive physiotherapy to build up Erin's leg muscies. She will never have used some of them before because she has been confined to a wheelchair. Creations has consistently backed Erin through the Give 4 BETH charity which is supporting her.

Stephen has charity shave A YAPTON councillor has got ahead of a fundraising campaign. Cllr Stephen Haymes backed the Macmillan Cancer Support's Brave the Shave campaign by having all his hair shaved off. His fundraising will be added to the charity initiatives being undertaken by Arun District Council's staff next month to support the worthy cause. Cllr Haymes has represented Yapton on the district council for many years. He is a former chairman of the local authortity and also chairs Yapton Parish Council of which he is a long-standing member. Cllr Haymes said: "I know it is called Brave the Shave and it is a big step. "But it is not in the slightest bit brave in comparision to the challenges that those with cancer, and their loved ones, face on a daily basis. "Macmillan Cancer Support do such wonderful work that being able to

highlight the charity and raise some money is an honour." Cllr Haymes saw his hair hit the floor at the Rustington premises of Clipper Street Barbers, which is owned by fellow Arun councillor Andy Cooper. Arun's chief executive, Nigel Lynn, deputy leader Cllr Dudley Wensley and a few council officers were present to give their support. "I would like to thank Cllr Andy Cooper, of Clipper Street Barbers, for agreeing to shave my hair off and for supporting my fundraising efforts as well as supplying with a new hat to protect my head from the elements. "I appreciate all the kind wishes and donations I have had, and am still receiving, and look forward to be being able to add to the final funds of the Arun staff fundraising for Macmillan in September," said Cllr Haymes. ` New strike misery for rail passengers RAIL passengers at Bognor Regis station face another strike next month. Conductors on Southern Railway are due to stage a fresh 48-hour walkout on September 7 and 8. It will be the fifth strike in three months in the ongoing dispute with the RMT union about the company's plans to turn conductors into on-board supervisors and take away their responsibility for closing doors. Southern imposed the change - with drivers operating the doors - from Sunday. THe latest disruption is likely to see Southern bring in its strike timetable which sees only half-hourly services from Bognor Regis to Brighton between 6.30am and 6.30pm. Alex Foulds, Southern's passenger service director, said: "Passengers and staff will once again be appalled by the RMT's decision to hold yet another strike. We are moving forward with our plans for the benefit of customers after nine months of fruitless attempts to reach an agreement." RMT general secretary Mick Cash said Southern's owner, Govia THameslink, had acted with arrogance and had no interest in ending the row. "Instead they have begun the process of bulldozing through the drive towards wholesale driver only operation without agreement and without any concern for the impact on safety, security and disability access," he said. Weekday train services are running on a reduced timetable in between strikes.

` Bank holiday events NIGHT-TIME fun is in store along Bognor Regis seafront this weekend. THe town's annual illuminations gala will take place from 8.30pm from West Park to the pier on Sunday. A mixture of decorated and illuminated floats and smaller entries will provide plenty of fun for spectators. THe procession will be followed by fireworks from the pier at 10pm. A funfair will be open from this afternoon along THe Esplanade east of the pier until Monday night. More enjoyment for young children can be found on bank holiday Monday on the Place St Maur. THe Young at Art event to create a giant world record canvas is being held by two artists with town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, from 11am to 3pm.

From page one Workers - which Advoco Planning states will cut the number of cars going into the site - would not work, he said. "THe minibus will pick up from a specified spot. It is not going to go round everybody's homes. People will not want to use it," he said. "THere are also the thousands of extra cars from all the extra homes which are being proposed for Hook Lane, Sefter Road and Summer Lane. We are feeling hemmed in here." Barfoots of Botley is number 24 in the top 100 UK fresh produce companies by turnover. Its sales are expected to reach £160m this year. THe proposed building and machinery will add a further £40m to this. THe company is a significant employer in the area and has 300 fulltime employees and more than 1,000 full time equivalents depending on the time of year. THe proposed facility will generate 30 jobs in the next five years. But Pagham Parish Council's planning committee members said they had serious highways concerns, though they had no objection to the proposed building. "THere are existing and historic problems associated with Pagham Road, which is narrow and winding, flanked by deep ditches, in places with adverse camber, and subject to slippery deposits left by tractors and other farm machinery. "Careful consideration must be given to additional commercial vehicles movements for this road," they said. More than 60 letters of objection to the plans have been submitted to Arun by residents.

First paperback for Graham after success of his e-book f Graham Minett with The Hidden Legacy

by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01242 908506 ext 11 E-BOOK bestselling author Graham Minett is about to see his first novel in the bookshops. Pagham resident Graham has sold some 20,000 electronic versions of THe Hidden Legacy, under the name GJ Minett, to top his publisher's sales list. Tonight will be the launch of the paperback edition of the dark and

enthralling psychological thriller. Graham said: "THe Hidden Legacy came out in e-book last November and it's sold four times as many copies as the publisher, Bonnier, thought it would. "It was just intended to build up some publicity for the paperback but they are amazed at how well it's done. I've got something like 140 reviews on Amazon and 120 of them are four or five star. "It bodes really well for the paperback." THe launch at Waterstones in Chichester will also see Graham's

second novel, Lie in Wait, launched in e-book. THis has been brought forward from November to take advantage of the rush of enthusiasm for his writing. THe next day will see him travel to Cheltenham for another launch event before a radio interview on Monday - his 65th birthday. Graham, of Sea Lane, is combining his literary success with his job on the headship team of THe Angmering School where he plans the curriculum for 1,350 pupils and 150 staff. He has worked

there since he moved from Felpham Community College where he spent 17 years as its head of languages. But he has long nurtured a dream of becoming an author. "I've always wanted to write. I enjoy it and I know it is something I can do. I remember getting praise at my primary school for my writing. "I came close to being published in my 20s. I had an agent and he spent a year trying to get me a publisher. I then wrote bits and pieces whenever I had the time and enthusiasm," he said. In 2008, he completed a part-time MA in creative writing at the University of Chichester and won a short story competition the same year as well as another writing competition for unpublished novels in 2010. THis contained the opening section of what would become THe Hidden Legacy and earned him contracts with an agent and Bonnier publishing group. Graham said: "It was my wife who gave me the push to do the MA and finishing that has opened the doors for me." THe Hidden Legacy is a thoughtprovoking and subtle novel which links the years 1966 and 2008. A horrifying crime at a secondary school has repercussions which echo across the decades. For Lie in Wait, Graham's central character is Owen Hall. He is a big man with an unusual fixation who becomes the subject of a murder investigation.

Town gets an A27 display by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 A NEW event will bring the consultation about planned improvements to the A27 to Bognor Regis. Highways England has added the town to its schedule of displays at the last minute. THe additional occasion will take place from 10am-7pm next Wednesday at the Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane. County council cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr John O'Brien, said: "We are delighted residents and businesses in Bognor Regis are being given this opportunity to speak to Highways England face to face in the town. "Please take this opportunity to see the exhibition and talk to the experts about the five options available. "And, if you haven't already done so, please respond to Highways England's consultation online or complete a paper survey and drop it off at one of the collection points set up throughout the area." THe multi-million proposals to the main traffic route will affect how easily motorists from the Bognor Regis area can get on to the A27 from roads like the A259 and Vinnetrow Road. Bognor Regis had originally been left out of the list of 15 exhibition locations arranged by Highways England when they began on July 14. THose outside the town will continue in Lavant, Selsey, Bracklesham Bay and Chichester Assembly Rooms until September 15 before the consultation closes a week later.

` Donkeys proved four-legged stars DONKEYS proved stars as the summer holiday fun continued at Aldingbourne Country Centre. THe ever-willing animals gave rides to scores of children during the latest of the centre's special days. Peanut, JJ and Coco from Hayling Island Donkeys, were popular along with Teddy the Shetland pony on Monday for their second visit to the centre north of the A27 this year. THe animal attractions continued on Wednesday with a reptile and raptor day. Tom's Talking Reptiles and Hawking About both took along their fascinating creatures to provide plenty of talking points among the visitors. Animals from the past will be the focal point next Friday with a dinosaur day. A series of timed sessions from 11am-3pm at £9.50 each will enable them to get up close to a 17ft T-Rex and three baby dinosaurs. Details: 01243 542075.

Pagham Parish Council's planning committee stated its concerns about the proposed options. Members agreed on Tuesday to ask their clerk, Nicola Jones, to compile a formal response which reflected their worries about the impact of any changes on traffic from the Pagham. Cllr Ray Radmall said he feared that banning right-hand turns, as most of the five options proposed, would worsen road conditions around the parish. "People who want to go west from the Manhood Peninsula are not going to want to travel east first and then double back. THey are going to try and find a rat run. From the Hunston roundabout, the Witterings and Selsey, they are going to cut across and use the modified Vinnetrow Road junction with the A27, which is completely disruptive. "Or they could even cut right through and go through Aldwick. "We want to say we have already got a lot of additional housing on its way, as well as the industrialisation of Barfoot's, and we don't want the Manhood traffic as well. it will be a real disaster," he said. THe committee members also agreed that the amount of disruption to the existing traffic should also be taken into account when the final scheme was chosen by Highways England. Work on the improvements is set to take 41 months. Cllr Mike Cole said he was sceptical any changes would improve conditions for motorists. "All this is going to do is to split up the traffic going along the Chichester Bypass and pile up further down the A27 because you have bottlenecks towards Portsmouth," he said.

BEATBOX supremo Ollie Heath took his musical magic to Bognor Regis seafront as the annual Funshine Days came to a close. Ollie kept crowds of young children at the bandstand entertained with his skills with the electronic equipment as he changed their voices higher and lower as they sang along. His appearance on Monday was the start of the final week of the month of holiday fun held by Bognor Regis Town Council. Other activities this week have been based around water. THe final one is being held from 11am-

3pm today. Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick said: "THis year's Funshine Days have again been very popular. "I've been seeing the same faces day after day, which is good. "THe most popular activity has been the donkey rides. I had to close the queue an hour early on one of the days they were here because there was so many children waiting. THe feedback I've been getting from parents for next year is 'donkeys, donkeys, donkeys'." A circus workshop with Zazz the Clown also attracted 300-400 children.

THey had spent their two social action weeks at the Tudor Lodge nursing homes, Granddad's Front Room community shop and the 39 Youth Club. THe group was led by Clare Goddard, a youth worker from West Sussex County Council. Mr Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "THe National Citizen Service is a wonderful opportunity for young people who have just finished their GCSEs to spend an exciting four weeks of their summer meeting a group of people their own age from all different backgrounds. "THe Bognor Regis group I met gave a presentation of everything they had

by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 A NATIONAL holiday operator in Pagham wants to develop part of its golf course. Bourne Leisure has applied for planning permission to install 22 caravan bases at Church Farm Holiday Village. THe company has asked Arun District Council to approve the proposal on a section of the nine-hole course at the Haven Holiday business. THe bases will generally extend in two arcs into the course and will each support a static caravan. Associated car parking, pedestrian footpaths, an internal access road and the necessary infrastructure is also covered in the planning application. Bourne Leisure's planning agent, Alfred Yeatman, said in a statement the scheme was needed to enable the company to keep up with the changing needs of holidaymakers. It had spent £60m nationally last year to provide new and improved facilities. "THe continued investment in the holiday park and the improvement of facilities will allow it to remain an attractive and competitive tourist destination enabling it to continue to deliver positive benefits to the local economy. "THe increased demand for higher grade accommodation and the price premium holiday guests are prepared to pay for (a) higher grade of accommodation/facilities has been recognised and experienced by Bourne Leisure in recent years," he said. "THe company aims to meet the new levels of demand with improved levels of accommodation, park standards, services, entertainment, eating establishments and other facilities." Church Farm Holiday Village is located between Pagham Lagoon to the south east and the Pagham Harbour nature reserve to the west. Pagham beach is as close as 300m to the south west. THe tourism site off the Church Lane/ Pagham Road junction extends to about

37 hectares and has 880 static caravan plots which are concentrated in a 22ha area. THe golf course of some 3.7ha is to the west of that operational area. It was granted planning permission in 2001 by a planning inspector after Arun had rejected it the previous year. THe go-ahead was subject to a pledge by Bourne Leisure that caravans or tents would not be placed or kept on the golf course. But Mr Yeatman said: "THis application forms part of Bourne Leisure's overall strategy for improvements at the park and will set the standard by creating an accommodation area that is less dense and set within high quality landscaping." THe landscaping will feature tree planting, shingle amenity planting, evergreen hedges, a wildflower meadow and grass. "THe golf course is proposed to be reconfigured so that the loss only amounts to one hole. "A number of further landscape works are expected to be undertaken off-site on the nearby golf course and scrubland to provide mitigation for the loss of supporting habitat," Mr Yeatman said. He said the holiday village's seafront site would appear to be well defended against flooding. THis was thanks to the upgrading of the nearby flood defences in the past two years that was jointly developed by Bourne Leisure and the Environment Agency. THis achieved flood risk levels of greater than one in 200 years for the holiday park and part of Pagham village. Statistics provided with the application show the importance of tourism to the Arun district. THe sector provided 7,200 related jobs in 2014 or 17% of total employment in the district. Arun ranks among the top 50 local authorities in the country in terms of domestic holiday trips and spending, attracting 240,000 trips and £52m in holiday spend to rank third in Sussex. But growth in domestic holiday trips to Arun had been more moderate compared to other local authorities in Sussex.

done over the four weeks. "It is clear they had all had a wonderful time and all 15 of them had become firm friends. "It was the friendship part of the experience that they emphasised time and time again." THe service was established by former prime minister David Cameron for 15 to 17-year-olds to take part in a series of activities to help boost their confidence, gain new skills and to put something back into the community. THe Chichester and Arun scheme started in late July and saw 14 teams, each of 15 young people, go through the programme. Each is led by a group of adult youth workers. THe first week involved an adventure week. THe group who Mr Gibb met stayed at Barton Hall in Devon. THis was followed by a skills week at the University of Chichester where they learned to cook and other life and employment skills.

Rain forces fun indoors BAD weather failed to stop Felpham's Fun on the Prom. THe heavy showers added to winds of 40mph and more forced the annual event to be curtailed and moved indoors. But Felpham parish councillor Gloria Moss said a few hundred people still went along last Saturday to enjoy the entertainment. "It was the worst conditions I have known in at least five years," she said. "But we made the best out of a bad job and people still enjoyed themselves." THe summer seafront occasion has been held by Felpham Parish Council since 2001. It usually sees an array of outdoor enjoyment on the greensward near Blakes Road as well as an open day at nearby Felpham Yacht Club. But the fireworks, the inflatables, the children's rides and the donkeys

and owls all had to be cancelled as Cllr Moss, who chairs the council's projects committee, put her alternative plans into effect. THe sailing club became the focus of the day. THe community first responders carried on showing their lifesaving skills. Tomfoolery and Punch and Judy worked their magic on children and musical entertainment came from THe Velvettes, Heather Alderton and THe Debonnaires. Both were back by popular demand. "THe children were all still keen to have fun and they brought their mums and dads with them," said Cllr Mrs Moss. Firefighters and the coastguard were also present along with the West Downs Neighbourhood Watch Task Force. A barbecue continued as intended to supply the visitors with plenty to eat.

BMX bikers showed off their skills on two wheels at their first visit to Pagham's summer festival. THe three-strong team from THe Base performed a range of techniques to amaze the spectators at Pagham on Parade. George Poling, 21, Dan Graham, 15, and Ed Brook, 14, spun and steered their way through tail whips, 360 degree turns, feeble grinds and fakies among other manoeuvres around ramps and rails in the display arena at Pagham Village Hall. George is the head of schools at THe Base indoor skatepark on the Southern Cross Industrial Estate in North Bersted. He said: "It's nice to show all the time and effort we put into our biking at demonstrations like this. When we say what we do, people often don't understand it. "Quite often when we are riding, there is only a small group watching, maybe 10/15, and they are all people who ride." George visits schools with scooting and cycling programmes to promote good habits to pupils who may want to use two

wheels to go to and from lessons. Other performances at Sunday's community event included nine musicians from TS Sturdy and TS Montrose of the Nautical Training Corps, the RAFA Skiffle Band, Mad About Dogs, Sussex Steel Band and a ukelele band. Several thousand spectators went along to enjoy the sunshine of the tenth anniversary occasion in between the heavy rain to make it probably the best attended since it was begun by Pagham Parish Council. Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said: "I would say we've had more people than ever before all things considered. We had to keep extending the car park in the adjoining field because so many people kept arriving. "It's been a fabulous day. It took a lot of hard work to get everything ready yesterday in the bad weather and never before have we seen such a big crowd. "It's been a lovely day, thanks to all the volunteers. We started this day ten years ago because it was the wish of my predecessor, Jacquie Miles, who led the way in the building of the village hall. It's in her memory we have the day." A solemn moment occurred amid the enjoyment and entertainment when

Cllr Radmall and the vicar of St THomas a'Becket Church, the Rev Mark Eminson, led a short ceremony to remember those who lost their lives for this country. Cllr Radmall laid a poppy wreath on a drumhead altar prepared by TS Sturdy members. Mr Eminson said: "Being mindful of our blessings this afternoon, our thoughts, hearts and prayers go out to those who gave their lives in war or those who lost loved ones in conflicts. "We are still in the centenary of the Great War, particularly the Battle of the Somme, and THe Day Sussex Died and the world is still full of conflicts." Beyond the arena was a display of some 80 classic vehicles and nine classic motorcycles. One of the vehicles, a 1972 Ford Transit Mark I, was being displayed there for the first time as a tribute to its late owner, Paul Eames. It is pictured below right. Paul passed away from cancer in November 2013, aged 35, two months after he finished his complete restoration of the once-popular builders' van. His father, Fishbourne man Peter Eames, 69, shows the gleaming van on fine days to keep alive his son's work. Peter said: "Paul would go to car shows

Gym members go on the road to Rio with exercises QUEEN'S famous song We Are THe Champions boomed out from the CD player as gym members in Bognor Regis completed their own Olympic challenge. THe ten gym members at the Laburnum Centre spent 45 minutes undertaking a Road to Rio training circuit. THeir exercises echoed some of the Olympic sports with a basketball reach, an upright row, a golf swing, a football dribble and a dumbbell swing. Gym co-ordinator Sarah Smith put the participants through their paces at last Friday's event. She said it was a good idea to link the session with the Olympics where Britain's athletes have achieved their best medal tally from any overseas games. "THis gives the gym users some idea of what the Olympic athletes have to do. "No-one taking part in this is going to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger but it's all about improving mobility and the level of fitness. "Everybody gets something different out of the sessions in the gym. Some people want to lose weight, some want to keep fit and others want to keep up their muscles ready for hip and knee

replacements. "THe stronger the muscles, the easier it is to have those operations." Among those exerting themselves in the session in the centre's hall was Hilary Jackson, 74, of North Bersted. She said: "I have always done exercise and gone to the gym and swum. "But, when my husband died, I did nothing for five years. I couldn't even walk up the stairs in my house because my knees hurt so much. "So, I got two dogs and joined this centre. I walk my dogs each morning and afternoon. "I also come to aerobics and circuit training for 45 minutes a time twice a week here. I feel so much better than I used to." West Meads resident June Chitty, 70, said it had been interesting to do the exercises after she had watched some of the Olympics on television. "It's good to do exercise and there's a good camaraderie here. "I've been coming to the centre for just under a year and I'm much fitter now. I've got Type 2 diabetes and it helps that," she said.

f David Huntley, left, outside the former King's Beach Hotel

CLASSIC windows must be kept in a former hotel in Pagham, councillors have demanded. Pagham Parish Council planning committee's members said they wanted to ensure the original bow windows in the empty King's Beach Hotel were retained when work to convert the building's ground floor into a convenience store finally starts. Cllr Ray Radmall said the plans by the Co-operative Group for a range of proposed signs for the shop seemed to show new windows would be installed. THis was contrary to the instructions of a planning inspector who turned down the Co-op's first plans because of the impact of changing the facade of the prominent building. "THey have to keep the multi-panelled bow windows. THat's one of the main reasons the first plan failed with the planning inspector. Not only was it rejected by Arun but it was rejected by the inspector on appeal," said Cllr Radmall. "THe look of the building is very important and those bow windows have to be kept. THey agreed to keep the original streetscape and the frontage of the building." Planning committee chairman Cllr David Huntley said: "THey have got to protect the basic structure, including the windows, which they were not going to do at one time." THeir comments were backed by the committee at its meeting on Tuesday. Its members told Arun District Council,

which will decide if the plans should be approved, the windows had to be conserved but they had no objection to the intended signs. Planning committee member Cllr Dawn Hall: "I think these signs look quite modest." THe Co-op wants to install three internally lit logo signs, one unlit acrylic sign of letters, three unlit wall-mounted aluminium panels, one internally lit totem sign and five unlit post-mounted signs. THe national retailer gained permission to change the use of the former hotel last August with the windows intact. Its previous attempt to open a store was rejected by Arun District Council in 2014 for three reasons. THey were the proposed change of use would cause the loss of an asset of community value, the proposed alterations to the front of the building would harm a heritage asset and the lack of a strategy to protect the upper floors as a hotel. Only one of those was backed by a government planning inspector, DJ Barnes. He ruled the replacement of the existing bay windows with two full height glazed windows, alterations to the entrance doors and the filling in of most of the openings with bricks would harm the building's appearance. "THese alterations would clearly be noticeable from the adjacent roads," he stated. "Accordingly, it is concluded that the proposed development would cause adverse harm to the character

and appearance of the property and the surrounding area..." THe continued lack of action at the former hotel on THe Parade angered the parish councillors. Cllr Huntley said: "I'm not happy with what is happening with it or not happening with it. THe whole thing is disgraceful. "It's been run down by Fullers. THe last landlord was making a go of it and they pulled the rug out from under his feet. THey would not sell it and would only give a five year lease. THat's the main problem. Of course, it's not going to work as a going concern. "It's an iconic pub/restaurant in the middle of Pagham and it's a great pity it has been allowed to get like this. "We can't keep every pub but we should have kept this. It's the only one in this area of Pagham." Cllr Radmall said: "THere have been complaints through the residents' association and the parish council from visitors who are saying 'What is this eyesore?' It's been stood there for such a long time. "THey are supposed to have cleared it up and put some proper fencing around it. But it still looks a shambles. THey could have cleared up the massive weeds." He believed the building had been let on a 15-year lease. Parish council clerk Nicola Jones said she had been told work would start on the store conversion next month and the outlet was planned to be open by Christmas.

A-level results are a record staff and want to thank them for helping me to achieve my goal" Katy Green, also 18, said: "I am over the moon with my results. I didn't expect the three A grades although I was told I would get them. I am so happy to receive the offer from Bristol to study medicine." THeir results were among a record haul at the Westloats Lane school. More than one in five A-levels were awarded A*-A, up from 9% last year, with 33% awarded A*-B, an increase from 24% a year ago. Textiles, history and maths had particularly good results. Vocational performance saw significant gains with 71% of all grades equivalent to A*-B, a rise of 29% on the previous year. Of those, 87% achieved A*-C equivalent grades and a 100% pass rate overall. Principal Mike Garlick said: "Our sixth form students have all worked very hard throughout their time here and I am delighted that their commitment and talent has been recognised in these results. "THese grades will allow them to go on to university and into careers of their choice." THe school's sixth form was increasingly popular and the results showed its students were able to achieve there, he added.

Chris and her friends brew up a fundraiser

f A raffle raised funds at the morning

TEA and cakes proved a tasty fundraiser when a Bognor Regis supporter held the town's opening event in an annual campaign. Chris Scott staged the first part of Macmillan Cancer Support's world's biggest coffee morning last week. She hopes the tasty occasion will have matched the £300 she raised at her previous event two years ago. Lip-smacking tasty treats and thirstquenching brews were on the menu at her house in Parklands Avenue. THey were enjoyed by 30 friends who were keen to support the good cause. "Everybody has been touched by cancer in their family and with their friends," said Chris, 66. "Macmillan just offers such a wonderful service. "Hosting a coffee morning is a lovely fun way to raise money for the charity and have a chat at the same time." All those who attended the occasion took cakes along. Kind-hearted backers also provided 30 prizes to create an attractive raffle to help to boost the takings. Macmillan encourages people to hold the coffee mornings each September. Several take place around Bognor Regis annually. Two are already advertised on the charity's website for this year. THese are Steph and Heidi's event at 11am on September 30 at 8 Tamarisk Close in North Bersted. Yeoman's Honda will host a morning at 9am on September 26 at its Chichester Road dealership.

f Peter Hodgkinson with his garden shed

Meeting Meeting will look will look at Men's at Men's Shed Shed idea idea A MEETING is being held next week to set up a Men's Shed in Bognor Regis. THe get-together will take place at 2pm next Wednesday in the Laburnum Centre cafe in Lyon Street. THe idea is to create a place where men can go to make use of their skills to create a common project and build a network of friendships. One of those who has called the meeting, Peter Hodgkinson, said: "THe idea behind Men's Sheds is to enable men, who are notoriously unclubbable, to get together and enjoy the opportunity to put their various skills to use and learn new ones. "It could play a big role in combatting loneliness which is linked to ill health. "THe evidence from other Men's Shed

is that when it gets going, and it has an understandable purpose to it, then there are a lot of people who enjoy it." THe prospect of a Men's Shed began with the Age UK operators of the Laburnum Centre but the idea fizzled out when it became obvious the building was unsuitable for the project. Peter, 72, of Victoria Drive, and his friend, Jim Hiley, wanted to see if the scheme could still prosper. THey hope the initial meeting will offer some prospects of a meeting place, preferably around the town centre, with easy access. Woodworking, computer, metal working and electrical skills are among those envisaged to be put to use. But management talents to organise the project will be equally valued.

f Film director Nicholas Hytner with Alan Bennett

Head back to school in Arundel with the classic British play History Boys Arundel Festival August 27 — Priory Playhouse. HEADING back to school comes early with this British classic. THe History Boys was acclaimed both on stage and in film and is sure to be a successful and memorable festival production. Set in the early 1980s, the play follows a group of history pupils preparing for the Oxford and Cambridge entrance examinations under the guidance of three teachers with hugely contrasting styles. And Arundel Players' production of this genuine British classic is set to change the history books, directed by Dawn Smithers and playing at THe Priory Playhouse THeatre. In addition to the eight sixth formers who set our story, the cast includes Hector, the eccentric, veteran teacher

played by Stuart Smithers who believes that exam preparation is the enemy of education. He wants the boys to learn information and skills that will benefit their development as men. Roger Booth plays the headmaster, Felix Armstrong, who is thrilled that the boys have achieved such excellent A-level scores. He brings in Irwin to give them some polish as he believes education alone is not enough to gain entrance into Oxford or Cambridge. Irwin, played by Tony Bright, is a young, savvy “supply teacher” who wants the boys to focus on making themselves as appealing as possible to the Oxbridge examiners. Mrs. Lintott, played by Rosey Purchase, is the history teacher who has quietly and steadily been teaching the boys everything they need to know to excel

academically. She proves to be the voice of truth throughout the play. “Alan Bennett is always very popular and this is one of Alan Bennett’s most celebrated plays and much of the narrative was inspired by his own experiences in school and gaining a place at Oxford.” said Dawn. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, THe History Boys first opened in London in 2004 and went on to win a host of awards. Its Broadway debut came back in April 2006. THe film version, which was also directed by Nicholas Hytner, was one of the Top Ten Films of 2006. It is truly a triumph of British performance. Gaunt is so steely as Strife mines a conflict of classes

THE venerable William Gaunt doesn’t have that much to say in Strife, John Galsworthy’s gritty play revived at Chichester’s Minerva THeatre. THat said, he speaks volumes in the lines he does have as ageing, hard-nosed tin mining company chairman John Anthony, faced with rebellious Welsh strikers trying to force his hand over pay and a disgruntled board of directors taking care of business for shareholders at the turn of the century. THe parallels with the modern day crisis facing the country’s steel industry — with jobs still in the balance — are brought in to sharp focus with the set centrepiece, a giant steel girder. It doubles as a boardroom table, and set changes conducted by boiler-suited, helmet-clad workers of today underline

the comparisons. THe table glows red with heat in one instance and then, metaphorically, red with rage another as a war of attrition ensues. Whisky-swilling, cigar-smoking Anthony is up against, amongst others, Valleys fireball David Roberts (Ian Hughes), who is so immersed in impassioned vitriol on behalf of the strikers, he fails to see quite how sick his own wife, championsof the families’ plight, has become from the strains of grim life on the breadline. Release date: 26 August Director: James DeMonaco Starring: Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson Genre: Action, Horror, Thriller

Amy has a seemingly perfect life - a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However she's overworked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she's about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed mums on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mum-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence – putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique.

Expanding upon the explosive universe introduced in the sleeper hits that have earned $200 million at the worldwide box office, Universal Pictures’ THe Purge 3 reveals the next terrifying chapter of 12 hours of anarchy that is sanctioned annually. When betrayal forces Senator Charlie Roan and her head of security Leo Barnes onto the streets on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.

the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows smaller businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government. THe screenplay is by Stephen Chin, Todd Phillips & Jason Smilovic, based on the Rolling Stone article titled “Arms and the Dudes,” by Guy Lawson. War Dogs reunited Phillips with several of his collaborators from THe Hangover trilogy.

at home along with their staff who proved equally as pleasant and welcoming. We headed out to the terrace seating overlooking the gorgeous sea view with our attentive and welcoming waiter by our side. We ordered up some soft drinks (a little early for a wine tasting) and sat eyeing through the menu. THe range of foods was vast and my mouth watered just at the sights of the lunch set up. Baguettes and sandwiches flowed through the menu with a variety of fillings from fish, such as prawn and tuna to gorgeous range of meats and cheeses all served with a garnished salad and options to add fries. Other foods on the menu included strong British favourites, fish and chips, rump steaks, burgers with fresh local meats and a fabulous range of Italian dishes and a separate pizza menu ready to temp your taste buds. After browsing the menu, we chose our

courses and accompanied by our waiter we set off to order. We decided on something simple for starters, prawn cocktail for me and my companion enjoyed some garlic bread. It was simply the best prawn cocktail I have tasted, with juicy and fresh salad accompanying a succulent fish dish that really took me by surprise. THe garlic bread was light but packed with a gorgeous Italian flavour and provided us with a subtle yet scrumptious starter option. THe choices were hard to make for our main given the extent of the menu but we chose to go with the specials of the day. I was served a spectacular teriyaki salmon, served on a bed of seasoned noodles and vegetables. THe noodles were cooked perfectly al dente and the peppers, onions and baby sweetcorns that mixed within were seasoned gorgeously and added a light and fresh zing to the dish. THe salmon was beautifully cooked and fell away with ease when we tucked in and melted morishly into the mouth. My companion was dished up a Cajun chicken pasta. THe chicken was tender and seasoned with a punchy Cajun spice accompanied with a thick tagliatelle pasta and shells of red onion that succulently complimented the dish amazingly all engorged in the most delectable creamy sauce. Myself and my dining partner were amazed by the portion sizes, each dish seemed like a sharer and the chefs were not shy to pile up the plates with their exquisite food, proving you really do get more than you pay for at this delightful venue. Our lovely waiter attended to

us again to clear away our polished-off plates and took our final order of the afternoon, desert. After our huge main courses we went ahead and ordered a desert to share with the choice of a rich chocolate pudding, a sticky toffee sponge and more all served with either a light vanilla ice cream or a rich custard acquaintance. We set our sights on the sticky toffee option and when it arrived in front of us, first impressions couldn’t have been better. THe presentation was something of a SoHo eatery and the dish was finished with a light cinnamon crunch dusted over the ice cream. As we tucked in I was blown away with the flamboyant flavour. THe sponged proved light and airy, nothing that would stick in your stomach all day and the sauce and ice cream proved to be perfect accomplices. After a fantastic meal and afternoon I left the restaurant full and caressed with food love. A distinctive and sociable atmosphere with some of the best staff I have seen in a restaurant you can be sure to come away from THe Aviator with an eating experience like no other. With such an amazing menu, food with impeccable presentation on offer, and also specials night including curry and steak evening with a range of offers, it is a night out not to be missed. Sparkling options when it comes to lovely bubbly Martin Lury

ARuNdeL

Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys TO champ or to sparkle? THat is the main consideration this week as I recommend suitable Bank Holiday beverages. Let us celebrate the end of August in style having due regard to value for money and note the improving quality of sparkling wine some of which is home grown. To that end I tasted two English sparkling wines and one from New Zealand. Limited production tends to keep prices high for English wines, so I was pleased to avail myself of 25 per cent off six bottles of wine at Sainsbury's in order to purchase a Chapel Down Vintage Reserve Brut at the reduced price of £12 75. Grapes are sourced from Kent, Essex and good old Sussex for this crisp sparkling wine with lively acidity and fine persistent bubbles. At this price it is a no-brainer and should not disappoint with its fresh citrus flavours, hints of strawberry and brioche on the finish. In my quest to evaluate English sparkling wines I headed due north to leafy Boxhill to Denbies wine estate. I selected their original sparkling wine, namely Denbies Greenfields, an elegant fizz made from

FoR Anyone To Come And enjoy!

whole bunch hand-picked grapes. Its baked apple aromas are enhanced by a toasted character and it is rounded in the mouth with generous fruit and purity of flavour. THe only downside with this good wine is the price of £25 which is not over competitive compared to budget champagnes. My last sparkling wine from NZ proved to be another bargain basement buy from Morrison's reduced from £20 to £10! THe Cloudy Bay Pelorus not only looks good, tastes even better and is, in my view, the

Rolls-Royce of champagne alternatives. THis is an aperitif style of sparkling wine with lemon, hazelnut and brioche flavours to the fore and a delight to sample. Turning now to Champagne, it is worth bearing in mind that over 70 countries, including Australia and China, have signed up to an agreement that Champagne can only be used on labels for products of the Champagne region of France and hence its exclusivity. I decided to sample one from Sainsbury's and two from M&S all enjoying a 25 per

Readers' Readers' Recipes Recipes

cent reduction in price on any six bottles purchased. Supermarkets' own labels can put some people off, but I have to say that Sainsbury's Champagne Blanc de Noirs at a post reduction £12 was a pleasant surprise with its balanced acidity, hint of toasted biscuit and richness and is my wine of the week and one you can present without fear of offending any guest! Popping into M&S I spotted an Oudinot brut down to £12, whose creamy texture made it a good buy at that price. I then scaled the heights and purchased an Abdel

Charlot brut for a reduced price of £24 and noted its richness, its lush caramelised hazelnut flavours and at this price worth a punt for its distinctive taste. What have we learnt? Shop around, look for offers and taste for yourselves. Footnote: Bargain reds from Sainsbury's — Argentinian Malbec now down to £4 (oh, so smooth) and Baron de Las Vinas Rioja for under £6 . Enjoy!

7. For the dumplings, sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. 8. Add the suet and enough water to form a thick dough. 9. With floured hands, roll spoonfuls of the dough into small balls. 10. After two hours, remove the lid from the stew and place the balls on top of the stew. Cover, return to the oven and cook for a further 20 minutes, or until the dumplings have swollen and are tender. (If you prefer your dumplings with a golden top, leave the lid off when returning to the oven.)

Rox Music and Arts Office The University of Chichester Bognor Regis Campus, Upper Bognor Road, West Sussex PO21 1HR roxmusicandarts.org Registered Charity No.1149033 A Company Limited by Guarantee Registered in England No. 8139419 The charitable company began with an impromptu concert on the town's seafront in1990 and has grown to being active all year to ensure quality events can be staged for performers and spectators. Two Bognor musicians, Steve Goodheart and Terry Slade, were frustrated at a lack of venues around the town for musicians to perform in professional standard surroundings. The success of that first concert led to the birth of Rox Music and Arts and the proud claim it has probably become the UK's largest and oldest surviving free festival. The charity's reputation for promoting and presenting freely accessible quality events on a not-for-profit basis has ensured its survival through enforced changes of venue before it settled in the grounds of the Royal Norfolk Hotel and the promenade opposite. A mixture of determination and expertise has ensured every festival has combined experienced and newer musicians in a wide range of genres who relish taking to a fully equipped stage in front of thousands of spectators. Awards, plaudits and congratulations have given formal recognition to the hard work of the volunteer trustee directors and their team of helpers. They have also forged successful links to expand the range of Rox events. A Hallowe'en festival provides plenty of spooky fun in Hotham Park where a spring event held by students from the University of Chichester with the help of Rox also takes place. All this maintains the Rox goals - to advance the education, awareness and appreciation of the arts and to provide chances for artists to

perform. 2016 sees Rox maintain its focus on staging professional quality music in Bognor Regis in several venues rather than one outdoor site. The organisers have adopted the name Bognor Rox for July 30 and 31 for the performances on the Concept Stage at Legends on Bognor Regis Pier, The William Hardwicke in the town's High Street and The Claremont on Scott Street, off West Street. Hotham Park will also play host to the festival’s Secret Garden. Around 30 acts have been secured for this popular ‘chill-out’ part of the main event. Local musician and Rox trustee Matt Douglas says on the Rox website: "We’re looking to encompass as much of the town as possible that wanted to join in and support the weekend which will still give Bognor Regis a great vibe with music to please many tastes."

WE can not miss the fact that the Olympics have been in the press with mass coverage this past week and with much conversation happening. I’m not a sport fan but I have to admit I’ve sat and cheered at the TV on the odd occasion carried away with the excitement and pride for our country men and women. How are they (sportsmen and women) so motivated as to achieve such ? Is this a nature versus nurture thing or much deeper? What fires those people to follow that direction and get up at dawn and run over misty hills, or cycle for hours pushing themselves hard?

ABOUT 50 members of Bognor Regis' twins in Germany have enjoyed a six day visit to the town. THe guests came from the towns of Weil-am-Rhein and Trebbin and were hosted by members of Bognor Regis Twinning Association. THey left on Sunday after a joint committee meeting with next year's 30th anniversary of the link with Weil-am-Rhein among the topics discussed. One of the highlights of their stay was a reception held by the association at St Mary Magdelene Church Hall, pictured above when the chairmen of the three twinning associations gave speeches which included tributes to long-time Bognor member Hilary Nicklin. A former committee member for many years, she has moved to Southsea. THe speeches were followed by a buffet and some hilarious entertainment provided

by members of the Bognor association. THe visitors enjoyed a formal reception in Butlin's by the town mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Pat Dillon, soon after they arrived, pictured below. Bognor Regis Twinning Association press officer James Clevett said: "During their stay, they were first taken on an excursion to Winchester, Alton and a ride on the Watercress Steam Railway to Alresford on which they were accompanied by Bognor twinning members Heather Perrot and David Roche. "THe next day saw Bognor members Bob Bonner and Terry Armistead accompany the guests to Wareham, Lulworth Cove heritage site and Swanage." THe only disappointment was rain last Friday which washed out the chance of a boat trip around Chichester Harbour. But the visitors could still look around Chichester.

It seems obvious that people do things, such as go to work, in order to get stuff they want and to avoid stuff they don't want. Clearly for our UK Olympians they do not get money when they receive a gold medal but they do get sponsorship and propelled into public arena. Overall, the basic perspective on motivation looks something like this: you have certain needs or wants (these terms will be used interchangeably), and this causes you to do certain things (behaviour), which satisfy those needs (satisfaction), and this can then change which needs/wants are primary (either intensifying certain ones, or allowing you to move on to other ones). People clearly have different wants. THis is fortunate, because in markets this creates the very desirable situation where, because you value stuff that I have but you don't, and I value stuff that you have that I don't, we can trade in such a way that we are both happier as a result. Another idea is that motivation is based on need in this order: growth needs (development of competence and realization of potential), relatedness needs (satisfactory relations with others) and then existence needs (physical well-being). Interestingly , this theory states that as you start satisfying higher needs, they become more intense (e.g., the more power you get the more you want power), like an addiction. Could this be such for those Olympians – the more they win the more they want? Or is it all about your background and life – typically the need for achievement, to accomplish something difficult to prove your value; need for affiliation, by doing so you form a closer personal relationships with someone you are trying to gain their attention and so on? Perhaps we should put a big blackboard up in town and ask everyone what motivates them – it would certainly get people thinking.

TWINNING links in Bognor Regis date back to 1980 when Neville Nisi, a reporter on the former Bognor Regis Post newspaper set up the town's twinning association. He was mainly responsible for establishing the link with the French town of St Maur des Fosses, just south of Paris. St Maur has a promenade named after Bognor Regis as well as a park.

Weil-am-Rhein was the next town to be twinned with Bognor. THat occurred in 1987 and the town is notable for having a chair factory and giant chair sculptures acknowledge its presence. THe twinning with Trebbin arose in 1995 as a result of its twinning with Weil. In the early years, the two German towns were on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall.

I am writing to call upon your readers to sign up for the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) annual London to Brighton Off-Road Bike Ride on Saturday, September 24, 2016, and help fight back against heart and circulatory disease, which is responsible for a quarter of all UK deaths. THere are currently around 920,000 people living with these conditions in the South East and it is responsible for over 21,500 deaths each year. THe BHF is fighting back through its life saving research. To date, BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, transforming treatments for heart attack to pioneering the surgical techniques that ensure most babies now survive congenital heart disease. However there is still a long way to go. Across the UK there are seven million people living with these conditions but thanks to the public’s generosity, the BHF can continue to fund essential research which will mean a better future for so many. Last year, the amazing fundraisers who took on the 75-mile cycle challenge helped to raise around £300,000 for the BHF’s vital research into heart disease. THis year we want to raise even more. By signing up to the BHF’s London to Brighton Off-Road Bike Ride and conquering this popular event, the money you help raise will fund the BHF’s research to improve the lives of those affected by heart disease every day. Registration is now open for Europe’s biggest charity mountainbike ride. THis unique event takes riders through steep forest inclines to tricky technical descents, rocky paths and adrenalinepumping single tracks. An achievable goal, but with the added technical challenges, makes it a ride suitable for cyclists of all abilities aged 16 and above. To help the BHF fund discoveries in the lab, sign up today. Entry fees will be £35. Register by visiting www.bhf.org.uk/l2boffroad or calling the events team on 0845 130 8663. Kate McCormak, BHF Event Organiser

RESIDENTS of the Bognor Regis area have been invited to a special dementia awareness day. THe Alzheimer's Society has organised the occasion to give them the chance to learn about dementia and the support available around the town for patients with the condition. THe charity has teamed up with West Sussex library service to stage the event from 10.30am-3pm at Bognor Regis Library in London Road. Representatives from Alzheimer's Society, Coastal West Sussex Mind, Crossroads, Age UK and many others will be present to answer questions. Sue Rennie, the Alzheimer's Society's services manager for West Sussex, said: "THis is a great opportunity for anyone to come along and find out more about dementia and the kind of help and support that is available in the area. "THere are 3,343 people with dementia in the Arun area, and with the right support and information, they can live well with dementia." THere will also be the chance to explore items from West Sussex libraries' reminiscence collection of objects, books and music as well as being able to talk to librarians about their housebound reader service. THey also run a reading well books on prescription service for dementia with the books endorsed by health professionals and available from libraries in the county.

It is thought the bandstand was built in 1878 when Imperial Winter Garden and Skating Rink Company built the winter gardens. It was cast in Glasgow by Macfarlane’s Saracen Foundry. I understand one of the town councillors was in Cheltenham visiting his son at boarding school when he saw an advertisement that the bandstand was for sale.

It became used for children's rides but Arun District Council believed the structure, without a roundabout, should be preserved and work started at the end of 1992. A local company restored it to its former glory with the aid of original drawings. To do this they used over 1,200 brass screws to secure the rolls of copper that were used to cover the top, to protect it against the coastal winds. May 1993 saw the bandstand

By Sylvia Endacott

Bandstands remain a popular part of the town ONE of the most evocative sounds of any seaside resort is that of Brass Bands playing on the seafront, so to have a bandstand is wonderful. For our first bandstand in 1901 a triangular piece of land was purchased from the owners of the Royal, Norfolk Hotel at a price of £60.00. It was sited opposite the hotel on the edge of the promenade. Oswald Bridges, the Town Surveyor, designed this bandstand so it was large enough for military bands. Over the years it was extended and eventually blossomed into the Esplanade THeatre, on the promenade opposite the Royal Norfolk Hotel. THe next bandstand was initially a wooden construction which can be seen on Edwardian postcards shown as on the ‘East Parade.’ Unfortunately, it was removed at the start of

Irish eyes are smiling... From back page But the win came at a price for Howell with Chad Field limping off in the first-half — though Gary Charman, who replaced him, proved to be an able deputy. Indeed it was former Horsham player-manager Charman who kept the home side in the game and denied the visitors an equaliser with a dramatic goal line clearance late on. A big plus point was the full return of central defender Sami El Abd, who turned in a man-of-the-match

display, handed to him by former Bognor defender Graham Marriner, sponsor of the game. New signing Jimmy Muitt looked polished during some game time late in the second half, and there were encouraging performances from Ed Sanders, at right-back, and skipper Dan Beck led by example with a workman-like display. Next, Rocks travel to Billericay for a league game and then host Worthing at the Nye Camp on Monday in an eagerly-anticipated encounter. The severity of Field’s knock

still needs to be full assessed but it is another injury headache for Howell, who hasn’t the biggest squad in the first place. On the injury front, he said: “Alex Parsons should be returning soon and Harvey Whyte needs a MRI scan on his knee to determine the extent of his injury and we hope that it isn’t too bad." Meanwhile, Bognor found out their opponents in the FA Cup after Guildford City saw off Chessington & Hook United 2-1 in a replay. The Rocks will host City on September 3.

Rutherford the taskmaster by Robson Friend sport@sussexpost.co.uk

f Chichetser City v Lancing Picture: IMOGEN NUNN

MILES Rutherford is emerging as a hard taskmaster at Chichester City after demanding more from his players despite some encouraging results. City dispatched Lancing 3-1 in the Peter Bentley Cup on Saturday with goals from Jake Gale just before the break and Dan Watts shortly after the interval. Omar Barry made it 3-1 after 76 minutes after Lewis Finney had pulled one back for the visitors on 55 minutes. THe victory came just days after City narrowly defeated Littlehampton 3-2

in the Southern Combination Premier Division. THey also have an opening league win over Eastbourne under their belts. Now Rutherford has asked that his charges up their game again for the visit of Newhaven to Oaklands Park tomorrow (Saturday), KO 3pm. He said: “We still haven't played very well to be honest, not to the level that I’m expecting but we've got results. “I'm happy with that, there’s nothing wrong with not playing as well as you want to if you end up winning games but we’ll see a little more against Newhaven. “I did see something but we have more to come yet. I've seen 20-minute spells

in games against Littlehampton and Eastbourne but it will be nice to get 90 minutes out of everyone. It is a positive we are winning games and not playing well.” Newhaven lost 6-1 to Haywards Heath ahead of the clash but Rutherford has warned against complacency. He added: “It will be a big test for us against Newhaven and we will have a full squad available. THe players know they haven’t played as well as they can, from the back to the midfield. And our forward play hasn't been as good as it can be. We’re waiting for it to all click.” City host Wick in a league game on Bank Holiday Monday, KO 11am.

against me and also go in my favour. Boxing at grassroots level is just as bad with certain clubs having their officials scoring the contests on their club shows — subsequently receiving most of the fortunate results. THere are few more deflating feelings as a boxer then knowing you've won a bout, only to be robbed of victory by poor judging. Something really needs to be done when this sort of thing happens, especially to youngsters, as it can make young lads walk away from the sport. I could have some brilliant quotes from every coach in the area about how they have felt cheated out of competitions. None of them though would ever dare speak though. Regarding the judges who scored the Conlan and Joyce Olympic contests, the decisions came from either incompetence or corruption, and surely no one is that incompetent?

Blues see off Havant in big win CHICHESTER RFC enjoyed a convincing 28-7 pre-season win over Havant at Oaklands Park on Tuesday night. The Blues were trailing 0-7 but fought back to parity through an Aaron Davies try, which was converted. It was soon 14-7 with a try from Dowding before Henry Anscombe’s covering tackle denied Havant a try. At the break it was 21-7 after good work from Johnson and Grace then hooker Mark Giddings score a try, which was converted. Chichester make the trip to Westcombe Park for their opening National League 3 London & SE encounter, with a 3pm kick-off. They host Portsmouth on October 15 to mark the club's 90th anniversary.

Olympic judges beat the boxers TEAM GB finish the Olympic Games in an astonishing second place with 67 medals, 27 of which were gold. Our boxing team did us proud adding three medals to that tally. Female fighter Nicola Adams struck gold for the second time in as many games. Joe Joyce was very unlucky not to match that, instead getting a silver and light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi also made the podium with a bronze medal. While there were some fantastic fights in the tournament it has to be said that the boxing was marred by a number of decisions that had fellow international fighters and commentators questioning the integrity of Olympic boxing and the scoring system used. Michael Conlan, of Ireland, went out at the quarter-final stage despite what looked to be a dominant performance against Russia's Vladimir Nikitin. And the aforementioned Joyce was robbed of super heavyweight gold after looking to have out-worked France's Tony Yoka. I must reveal that this sort of thing happens at all levels of amateur and professional boxing. Being a journeyman in the professional ranks, I've been beaten well on a few occasions, but every now and then I totally outbox my opponent only to have the decision go

joint managers Jon Meeney and Gary Elphick, and with former Rocks ace Kane Wills in their ranks. And who could resist an envious glance or two at their buoyant bank account and aspirational plans for the future? Owner Greg Dowell, the former player paralysed in a car crash who has poured cash into the club, has taken care of debts to the tune of £200,000 and given the Woodside Road outfit new impetus. On the pitch, Rocks went into the

Staines Town victory — garnered with a decent display and a goal each from THomas Byrne and Dylan Barnett on Tuesday night — having earned their second point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Grays Athletic last Saturday. James Fraser’s first goal of his second spell with the club handed the visitors the advantage. But a second half Adeyinka Cole spot-kick levelled things up after Sami El Abd was penalised for a challenge on David Fallah.

PostSport diary PostSport diary PostSport diary LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp got over the shock Premier League defeat at Burnley by helping Scott Murfin celebrate his leveller for Pagham at canterbury City in the FA Cup last Sunday. Unless the person Murfin is with is not the Kop chief at all and merely Nyetimber Lane grandee Darren King, a Klopp doppleganger, instead? BOGNOR'S game against rivals Worthing in the Ryman Premier Division on Monday needs no hype. The rivalry between the two clubs is well documented and now that the Rebeles have a money man throwing big bucks at the club, no doubt the terrace animosity factor has increased. That said, we feel there reaaly is no need for the game to be billed as the "non-league El Classicoast" as it was in the Rocks match programme for the home win over Staines!

INSIDE: Cracking cricket coverage...brave Middleton misery in T20 final at Hove

Eire we go! Lions roar in FA Cup Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk JOSH Irish hit a dramatic extratime winner to give Pagham a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Canterbury City at Nyetimber Lane on Wednesday night. It means the Lions now host nonleague big boys Dulwich Hamlet in the first qualifying round on September 3. Ben Mepham pulled Pagham back to 1-1 on 55 minutes after they fell behind to a Sam Conlon goal after 11 minutes before teenager Irish struck the winner. Mark Bennett's outfit earned this replay after Scott Murfin's equaliser gave them a 1-1 draw at City on Saturday. THe win sets up a football feast in the town with Rocks at home to Guildford City in the cup on the same day. We've got fotball fever - turn inside...

Irish starlets shine for Rocks Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk EIRE starlets Thomas Byrne and Dylan Barnett grabbed the goals that gave the Rocks a 2-0 victory over Staines Town. It was their first Ryman Premier Division win this season after an opening day defeat and two creditable draws on the road. The Brighton youngsters, on shortterm loans at Bognor from the Amex along with Jason Davis, did the damage to hand Jamie Howell’s outfit

three points at Nyewood Lane on Tuesday night. Bryne, 17, struck first from close range after half an hour to put the Rocks in a deserved 1-0 lead after some free-flowing play. The goal gained the teenage attacker almost immediate redemption two minutes after he had tamely fluffed a spot kick at the Scoreboard End — the infringement a hotly-contested handball in the box. Barnett, 19, lively all night, sealed the hard-fought victory with a second goal in the fifth minute of added-on time with a rasping drive after good work from substitute Jimmy Wild.

Both Bryne and Barnett are Republic of Ireland youth internationals, and if Howell can secure long-term deals for the exciting duo it would be a huge boost. Boss Howell will no doubt be pleased that his new-look team are now gelling after a summer of upheavel in terms of losing influential personnel. And they showed a great deal of versatility in this triumph; employing more grit than grace to a degree after the break. If anything, it proves they can easily switch from flair to fight.
