the safety of all passengers?" Baroness Smith's intervention comes in the third week of an emergency timetable brought in by Southern to combat a host of cancellations caused by its lengthy dispute with the RMT union about the introduction of driveroperated doors. Fears Fears about about HighHigh Street Street accident accident risk risk SHOPPERS in Bognor Regis risk accidents in the town's new look High Street, it has been claimed. The road has been fully re-opened after a a £600,000 improvement scheme. It includes a raised junction of some 50m long which makes the road the same height between the London Road preinct and The Arcade to make it easier for pedestrians to walk on. But the High Street is still the main town centre route for all its bus services. This means single and double-deckers pass through every few minutes in daytime. A brief period on Monday morning saw some groups of shoppers strolling across the raised junction unaware of buses approaching behind them. A car was also driven across the raised junction despite no entry signs at either end of the High Street. Bognor Regis Civic Society deputy chairman Hugh Coster, pictured at the western end of the raised junction, said: "This makes it look like pedestrians can just stroll around. "That could be dangerous bearing in mind many people will be visitors who have never been here before. That runs the risk of making it dangerous when there are moving vehicles around. "There are no signs to tell people that at all on the raised junction. "You don't get vehicles driving through the centre of Chichester because the pinch points around it are more distinct." Bognor Regis companies urged to look at proposals for the A27 BUSINESSES in Bognor Regis have been urged to have their say about proposed improvements to the A27. Highways England intends to enhance the Bognor Road roundabout on the A27 and A259 as part of a major package of work on the Chichester bypass. Arun District Council believes the changes to the roundabout might have a major impact on companies around Bognor Regis. Its leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said: "Businesses in Bognor Regis and the west of the district shouldn't miss out on having their say by assuming the consultation only applies to

about the internet for so many years. "There are low cost companies around but they can go bust and leave people stranded. That would never happen with us. "All our holidays are fully bonded and people will always come back to a quality service with the personal touch," she said. Woods carries some 7,000 holidaymakers a year on its coaches and 10,000 on day trips as well catering for numerous private hires. The award presentation took place outside Woods last Friday. Chamber president Nick StuartNicolson said the award was a tribute to all the Woods employees whose work made the business such a success. "Each time I visit here, I am immediately impressed with the warm welcome given by the staff and by their wealth of knowledge,"he said. "The ethos of the chamber is to strive for a stronger and more prosperous Bognor Regis and to promote and enhance the reputation of the town. "We feel that Woods have achieved that exceptionally and their success reflects very much on Bognor Regis." Mr Gibb said: "We are proud of our town and proud to have Woods as a prime business in our town. "I congratulate you on what you have built and achieved and congratulate the staff for maintaining and enhnacing year on year the reputation of this travel company." The award was the second to be presented to Mr Elsmere by the chamber in two months. The first was the Britten Trophy for being the town's outstanding business personality. This is being shown by Mr Gibb in the photograph taken by Imogen Nunn. * Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce is growing, its chairman told the presentation. Adam Cunard said four new members had been accepted at a meeting the previous night. Its total was soon set to exceed 100 to provide a more effective voice for the town's businesses.

Chichester. "Improvements to the road network around Chichester could have a positive impact for businesses in Bognor Regis as journey times will be reduced and it will be easier to travel between the two places." A series of 14 public exhibitions about the proposals is taking place around Chichester from next Tuesday. They will end on September 22 on the closing date for comments. Highways England says the proposals are aimed at improving traffic flow, increasing capacity and accommodating economic growth. Details at www.highways.gov.uk

` Burglar jailed BURGLAR Albert James has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of raids on homes in Bognor Regis and elsewhere. Items which included high value jewellery and cash were taken from properties in the town as well as surrounding areas like Littlehampton and Chichester. Mills, 58, of Mill Road, Donnington, was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court last Friday. The judge described his offences between October and December 2014 as 'a campaign of highly professional burglaries'. Investigating officer DS Simon Clancey said: "This was a very challenging investigation due to lack of forensic and direct evidence, the number of, and geographic distance between the offences. "However, today's result shows how seriously the courts take burglaries like these, making this a very rewarding investigation to have worked on, as I'm confident James's victims will be satisfied with the sentence he has been given."

` Arun spending row A ROW about spending on Bognor Regis and Littlehampton broke out among councillors. Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said the £1.2m Arun District Council planned to spend on Bognor Regis was just a quarter of the £4.85m earmarked for Littlehampton town centre. "I think that only adds to the feeling of some of my electors that the money is being spent over the water," he told Arun's full council meeting. A Freedom of Information request a few years ago showed Bognor Regis received much less than Arun's spending on Littlehampton, he said. Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said Littlehampton High Street only dated from the late 1990s or early 2000s. "A large amount of money was spent on the road and it all looks really nice," he said. But Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "I'm very disturbed to hear Cllr Brooks and Cllr Wells being so divisive and pitching Bognor Regis against Littlehampton yet again. "I thought we had buried that idea. We sit here as Arun councillors to serve the best we can for all the district."

Southern needed to look at the service it was providing. "We have to get on and try to fix it, and that is the intention," he said. Baroness Smith also asked if it was true the start of driver-operated trains would mean disabled passengers having to give 24 hours. Other Labour, Lib Dem and Conservatives peers also joined the attack in last Thursday's debate about the plight of disabled passengers especially given the poor state of rail services in the region. After the debate, a Southern spokesman said: "We know service levels in the last couple of months have not been good enough and apologise unreservedly. "Southern services continue to be affected by train crew availability. "The revised timetable gives our passengers more confidence in being able to plan their journeys, knowing what services should be running." He said disabled passengers were asked to give 24 hours notice but it was not a requirement. Those who turned up, though, could find they had to wait for assistance. Driver-only operation was as safe as operating trains with conductors, he said. It had worked well on 40 per cent of trains across the Southern network for 25 years.

Janina is one of the 'forgotten generation' of younger veterans being used by the SSAFA charity to highlight their plight of feeling let down by their

Cllr Mrs Brown said: "The seafront development plan has been based on a plethora of consultations that have happened before. "We obviously need to renew the underground toilets. We have known that for a long time and they do have to be replaced. We have got a budget now (£200,000) and we need to start doing something and get on with the work. "I have spoken to two businesses on the seafront. Wherever you are going to put this new public convenience block on the seafront, you need to give it some careful consideration to make sure it has the facilities which are required." Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard), pictured outside the London Road loos, said: "This is a cut to a front-line service of the toilet provision across the district. It will affect young and old within our communities the most. "One of the toilet blocks scheduled to close is in the London Road coach park. To say it is under-used is absolute bunkum. Anybody who lives in the town and goes to Hotham Park can see how well used it is. People use it on their way to Glenwood Estate and the University of Chichester. "A park the size of Hotham Park needs more than one toilet. It's absolutely vital that toilet remains there." Cllr Paul Dendle, Arun's cabinet member for leisure and amenities, said: "We have 29 toilets and a lot of them are not up to scratch and we need to improve them. It's up to parish and town councils to prioritise them. "The Lib Dems are stuck in the past."

Friday, July 29, 2016 f Church Field in Felpham

Field which inspired Blake has received greater protection to prevent it being developed GREATER protection is to be given to a field in Felpham which inspired William Blake. Church Field will be included in the Felpham conservation area. Members of Arun District Council agreed without debate at their meeting last Wednesday to expand the area. Their decision means the site of four hectares between St Mary's Church and the B2259 Felpham Way will gain recognition for its special historic interest which makes it desirable to be preserved and enhanced. The extension of the conservation area will also include the allotments next to Church Field. Martyn White, Arun's principal conservation officer, told councillors in a report: "Church Field and the allotments sit to the north of the parish church. "These fields help provide an important setting to both the church and the conservation area. The use of the land has not changed in a considerable number of years. "In addition, there is a historical

New group to fight New group to fight scheme by Butlin's scheme by Butlin's by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 DOZENS of angry residents have formed a protest group to fight plans by Butlin's in Bognor Regis. The neighbours have become the Aldwick Neighbourhood Action Group to oppose the company's proposals for Ashley House. As reported, the holiday firm wants to house 70 staff in the former residential home in Aldwick Road. Its planning application for the change of use is set to be considered by Arun District Council next month. More than 160 objections have been received by the council. And the action group's members reject the scheme. Spokeswoman Deborah Martin said: "We don't want to see this happen because of the effect it will have on our area. This is not in keeping with it. We are a residential road with some care homes and flats with permanent residents. "There will be 70 young people living in what will be a hostel. Butlin's says it has a noise management plan to control them but that will not be worth the paper it is written on. "Once their staff are off duty, Butlin's will have no control over them. There will be a manager there but there are 168 hours a week and so that individual will not be present for more than a hundred of those hours. And the staff who will be living there will not have any emotional investment in the community. They are just transient people. "They will obviously want to come home and relax after a day's work and enjoy themselves. That will involve noise now and again . They won't be too worried what the neighbours think. This is what we are facing." A travel plan proposed by Butlin's to ensure its staff in the home did not use cars was also likely to be ignored, said Ms Martin. "We've had all these assurances with planning applications before. The Tesco Express just along the road said its business would not block the traffic, its deliveries would not take place out the front and it would not take up all the parking spaces. But that is still what happens after all these years. "With the former Ship Inn, in Aldwick

Street, there was going to be a pedestrian crossing point when Morrisons took it over, but has never happened. "If the Butlin's staff do have cars, where are they going to park them around here?" Ms Martin, who lives nearby, said that a take-over by Butlin's of the empty property would triple its occupation from the 24 previous residents. "Ashley House's residents were part of the community," said Ms Martin. "People knew them and saw them around. That won't be the case with the Butlin's staff. "The company professes to be community minded and employing local people. Yet they need a hostel for 70 of them because they don't live locally. If they did, they would have their own homes." She said the group's members were annoyed they were omitted from the initial consultation into the plans in spite of living nearby. "The residents in Aldwick Road between Ashley House and Bognor Regis were treated with contempt. We are only 50 yards away but we were never told what was happening," she said. Butlin's resort director Jeremy Pardey has recently reconfirmed to Arun his company's commitment to the plans. "Moreover, we will take full responsibility for all team members residing at the premises ensuring that we are good and respectful neighbours," he wrote. "All team members residing at the premises will be from the 'specialised' team. They are highly skilled and will be offered priority bed spaces available at Ashley House. "All team members will sign an accommodation agreement, which sets out terms and conditions to ensure that harmonious relations with their immediate neighbours and residing guests are met at all times. "If any members breaches the agreement three times, their agreement will be terminated." A 10pm-7am quiet time would be enforced among the strict rules imposed on the residents and they would have a full-time manager with them to ensure they were respected, he added. The protestors live on Aldwick Road's south side and towards the sea whereas Ashley House opposite is in Bognor. It has been empty for about 18 months.

association with the poet and artist, William Blake. "The field is considered to be the only remaining field within the village that greatly influenced him and his work." Without the conservation area status, the field has been vulnerable to being concreted over for houses, especially with Arun's shortage of land earmarked for development to the alarm of many residents. The new status gives Arun a range of additional powers and considerations to apply to any planning application for the field as well as the usual planning controls. The move to include Church Field in the conservation area has followed Mr White's review of the neighbourhood as part of an appraisal of its character. His appraisal looked at what made Felpham's area special and worthy of protection as well as what detracted from it and what could be enhanced. He dropped his initial suggestion to include Manor Close in the conservation area.

The Friends of the town's war memorial hospital will stage the annual fete from 1pm-4pm in the grounds of the Shripney Road site. There will be plenty of stalls for visitors to browse around as well as well as a barbecue, cream teas and country produce. Entertainment has been lined up as well to keep people amused as they give money to the charity to help the hospital. An average year sees the Friends donate about £100,000 towards the welfare of its patients. Anita Sturdey, the Friends' fundraiser, said: "The fete is really important to us. Erin's dream to dance to be boosted by special haircut by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 AN Aldwick girl's dream of dancing is set to be move closer. The fundraising for a life-changing operation for Erin Aldridge, five, pictured above, will receive a further boost next month. One of her schoolfriends, Maisie Skinner, also aged five, is to have a hair cut with a difference to help the £40,000 fundraising appeal for Erin. Maisie said: "I would like to raise money for my friend, Erin, by having

30cm of my hair cut off taking it to chin length. "The hair cut off will also be sent to The Little Princess Trust who make wigs for children suffering hair loss through cancer and other medical conditions." Maisie has a fundraising target of £500 through her generosity. She had raised almost half that amount already this week. Her sponsored haircut will take place at Creations Hair and Beauty in Chichester on August 17. The amount generous Maisie raises will help to push the amount raised for Erin closer to the halfway mark. So far, some £13,500 has been raised in a series of events and donations since

the appeal was started by Erin's parents, Victoria and Ash Aldridge, last February. Due to problems during pregnancy, Erin's parents were told her mum and her own life were at risk. The danger became so bad they were told the pregnancy would be terminated to protect her mum. However, against the odds, Erin somehow fought on for a further ten weeks in hospital at which point there was no choice but to deliver Erin. At the age of two, she was diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy which has left her unable to walk unaided. She was due to have a selective dorsal rhizotomy operation on the NHS that

would hopefully allow her to walk and dance like her peers. But the health service pulled the funding for Erin's procedure at the 11th hour to leave her family having to find £40,000 to pay for the major operation. Among those to have helped them was Jude Smith, six, another young friend of Erin's. As reported, he completed a triathlon on Felpham seafront earlier this month. His fundraising has raised £1,480 which is more than £1,000 over his initial target. Mr and Mrs Aldridge have also teamed up with the Give 4 B.E.T.H. charity which helps change the lives of disabled children.

MP Nick Gibb has been handed the job of looking after the funding for the country's schools. Tory Mr Gibb was given the extra responsibility when new prime minister Theresa May said he could continue as the government's minister for schools. Mr Gibb is a chartered accountant and worked in the industry before he was elected as the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton in 1997. "I've been in office for four-anda-half years and I feel honoured I have been asked to carry on to embed the reforms and continue to raise standards," he said. He said he wanted to provide a period of stability for teachers after the extensive reforms in recent years. "It will be good to have them implemented without any further reforms. But we are still remorseless about behaviour in schools continuing to improve and improving academic standards, particularly the standard of reading," he said. He was schools minister from May 2010 to September 2012 and re-joined the government in 2014 as the minister for school reform before he was given his current role last year. He will work with the new education secretary, Justine Greening.

NEW plans to rebuild a wrecked Bognor Regis store have been approved. Arun District Council has backed the scheme to partially demolish and reinstate the former Keith Jay furniture store in London Road. The building was destroyed by a fierce blaze last autumn. The latest scheme is to keep the ground floor as retail and create three flats above. A previous approval kept the first floor for retail and storage above in line with the last use of the building. It is one of a pair of buildings on each side of Crown Bingo, formerly a cinema.

Scouts' anger at loss of base in proposed housing scheme by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 SCOUTS fear for their future if plans for hundreds of homes in Rose Green go ahead. The 1st Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts will lose their base once housebuilding starts at the site off Sefter Road. Developer Taylor Wimpey has bought the farmland on which the Scouts' building is located and has told its members they will be able to use a proposed community building amid the new housing. But Scout group committee member Carole Sayers said: "A community centre is not ideal for us. We have got loads of tents and two vehicles that need to be parked together. "Taylor Wimpey promised us they would build us a new hut but they say they will now no longer do that and we will have the centre instead. It will be very, very difficult for us if we have the community centre." She said the Scout group had settled on the farmland in the early Eighties after using several sites. It had 100 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts with a waiting list. "We could double our size but our existing building

is in a poor state," she said. "We have not been able to improve it because we have not had a long enough lease from Taylor Wimpey. "It's getting to the stage where we are thinking about getting a temporary home. We will have even more children if there are more houses in the area. We want to stay where we are. It's important to us." She visited the exhibition staged by Taylor Wimpey last Wednesday in the Aldwick Royal British Legion club about the company's initial plans for up to 250 homes on 13.50 hectares between Sefter Road and Osborne Way. Most of the land is in Pagham, with some in Aldwick. A Taylor Wimpey spokesman said: "The purpose of our consultation was to enable the local community to find out more about our emerging residential-led proposals for our proposed development of up 250 new homes, and we would like to thank all of the 285 people who attended. "We will now look carefully at the comments we have received to make sure people's views are taken into account as we finalise our planning application for submission to Arun District Council in the autumn." Building work could start in late 2017/early 2018. As well as homes, the proposals include land for a primary

school, a site for the multi-purpose community building and significant areas of open space. "The plans are by no means fixed and we will be flexible where we can to take into consideration the community's thoughts and opinions," he added. Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said he expected to work with Aldwick Parish Council to protect the best interests of both area's residents. "We need to scrutinise these proposals very carefully, particularly for the Scouts who are very important. There are significant building and road infrastructure issues with this development and we have got sufficient expertise in both of the councils in regard to many of them. The last thing we need is make the road congestion worse," he said. Cllr Michael Warden, Aldwick Parish Council's planning committee chairman, said: "We will look to work with Pagham council to address the matters Cllr Radmall has mentioned." Chalcraft Lane resident Phil Sargent said: "I don't want the houses if they make the traffic worse. Since the relief road opened, the traffic along Chalcraft Lane has got much worse. I can't get out from my house at peak time in the mornings - and there are more homes in North Bersted to come."

INJURED former servicemen and women will be seeing art created by Felpham Community College pupils. A mural by the college's nine-strong Year 7 Art Group been chosen for display at Queen Alexandra Hospital home in Worthing. The 60-bed hospital home is a national charity which cares for more than 100 former servicemen and women a year by providing high quality nursing care and rehabilitation. The charity held a competition for all West Sussex schools to design a mural based on the quote 'Our residents do not live in our workplace, we work in their home' for their inspiration. The art group's members - India Dines, Francesca Nelmes, Pippa Morris, Adam Dwyer, Emily Watts, Abi Merriott, Joyce Chapman, Hannah Sargent and Deryn Angel - created their final design on a canvas which was taken to the home at the end of term to go on permanent display in its main building. College art teacher Carly Ayling said: "It is a fantastic achievement for our students to have won this competition. They spent hours on their design for the mural and looked forward to doing the actual piece on a much larger scale." SUMMER holidays will be spent in a hospice for some Felpham students. The four Felpham Community College pupils have been accepted on to a summer school at St Wilfrid's Hospice. Vicky Clegg and Esmee Matthews, who have just completed Year 11, pictured

right, and Lydia Rickard and Aaron Sulton, formerly in Year 12, will attend the programme for six days next month. There are only ten places available for 16 to 19-year-olds for those who want to pursue a career in health or social care and competition is fierce. Esmee said: "I am coming back to Felpham in September to study chemistry, biology and maths and I hope to be either a GP or heart surgeon. Any experience I can get in the health sector is great." Would-be pharmacist Aaron said: "I want to work in pharmacology so this is a chance for some experience in the health and social care field." The summer school at the Grosvenor Road hospice involves a variety of experiences, including patient contact, classroom seminars and discussions and shadowing staff. Successfully completing the course will give the quartet three Level 2 QCF Awards in Understanding how to work in end of life care, Understanding the role of the social care worker and Awareness of communication in adult social care. College careers co-ordinator Gill Woodman said: "This is a brilliant opportunity for our students to get involved with and we are really pleased four have been accepted." SIX Felpham Community College have graduated from the Sussex Study Experience. This is run through the University of Sussex and is designed to offer

Seafront investment is given the go-ahead

f The viaduct on the relief road

Award for the town's viaduct A NEW viaduct has helped the engineers behind the Bognor Regis relief road receive two awards. The structure is the largest of its kind in the county and the expertise which created it was recognised at the Institution of Civil Engineers South East England Engineering Excellence Awards. The road was highly commended in the urbanisation award category and for engineering excellence. Barratt Homes built the £30m road which stretches for 3km and connects the

A29 Rowan Way and the A259 Flansham Lane. Barratt Homes' managing director Tim Hill said: "We are thrilled with the highly commended awards which recognise the benefit the road brings to local communities and the engineering expertise involved in all aspects of the project." The road has cut driving times in the area since it opened last March. It took five years to build and supports 800 homes at Blakes Mead in Felpham.

A PLAN to regenerate Bognor Regis seafront has been approved by councillors. The scheme by Arun District Council will see the relocation of the under-used historic bandstand from its exposed position on the promenade to a more sheltered site in the conservation area at Waterloo Gardens. It is hoped this will encourage the Grade II-listed structure, believed to be Edwardian, to be better used. Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said he had some concerns about the proposal. "I support it in principle but I have some concerns about the age of the bandstand and wonder if a full survey would be carried out so we can be absolutely assured the bandstand would not be damaged or, even worse lost, during the move. "That would be a terrible thing to happen." But Cllr Phil Hitchins, the chairman of Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration subcommittee, said: "I know of no proposals to demolish the bandstand and lose it. "I am sure we will do a full survey before we move it. I see no reason why that bandstand should not be located somewhere else. "One has to rely on the people who are moving it to move it safely." The proposals agreed at last Wednesday's full meeting of Arun will see distinct zones set out along the promenade. Each will focus on different activities to create a masterplan for improvements as funding becomes available. Some £640,000 has been set aside by Arun

f Brian Knight, left, with Roger Turner

f The seafront bandstand could be moved for new public toilets, a free children's play area and a new seafront catering outlet. Longer-term proposals include new beach huts on the promenade near Butlin's. There will also be designs for new seating, lighting and planting along the promenade. For the Place St Maur, before the Regis Centre site is regenerated, temporary structures for markets, shops or catering outlets are being investigated. Arun leader Cllr Mrs Gillian Brown said the Bognor Regis seafront delivery plan was based on existing strategies and

research material that had been subject to various consultations and would deliver what people said they wanted to see. "It will enable phased delivery of enhanced and new facilities for visitors to the seafront offering a stronger and higher quality offer and will provide a masterplan for the seafront area. "By setting out broadly what will go where it allows the new toilets, play area and the initial catering outlet to be built and creates the potential for other exciting additions to the seafront as funding is secured," she said.

The Home caters for up to 19 elderly frail residents in pleasant and comfortable surroundings, all of the bedrooms are ensuite and there is a large communal lounge overlooking the garden, and a separate dining room.

Gifts boost town hospital TWO donations have ensured x-ray patients in Bognor Regis are benefiting from the country's best equipment as well as the best staff. The near half a million pounds of gifts have transformed the imaging department at the town's war memorial hospital with the latest technology. The unit's improvements were celebrated at an official opening last Thursday. The largest donation was a £400,000 share of the legacy of Ben and Barbara Benjamin. The late Aldwick Bay residents left £1.2m to Bognor Regis Lions to be shared equally among three beneficiaries. One of these was the Shripney Road hospital. Sussex Community Foundation NHS Trust has spent the windfall on an x-ray machine and creating a new-look department. Lions president Roger Turner said Mr Benjamin joined the club in 1973 a few years after he and his wife moved from Surrey. Mr Benjamin became treasurer as well as its chairman in the early 80s. "He was a nice fellow and his wife was absolutely super. They were very generous and would have been pleased to see the money being spent like this. It

was something close to their hearts." Former publishers' agent Mr Benjamin died in 1999, aged 96, and his wife passed away nine years later. Carol Warr, a clinical support worker in the imaging department, said the new x-ray machine was a big improvement. "It is a lot faster and the images are a lot clearer," she said. "There is no cartridge to process. The patients are surprised they can get dressed and go because we can see their image instantly." She is among the two full-time radiographers, radiography manager, bank staff and consultants who beat all their counterparts in England as the highest performing team. They x-ray 1,500-1,700 patients a month at up to 80 a day for fractures, arthritis check-ups and chest infections. Another 350 a month have ultrasounds. That procedure has also been made easier by a £60,000 ultrasound machine donated by the hospital's Friends to go alongside the existing one. Brian Knight, the Friends' chairman, said: "It has taken many years but we have now got a new imaging department. We are always happy to support the hospital to benefit its patients."

All of the residents receive the highest quality person centred care from our team of dedicated carers. All meals are cooked freshly on the premises by our own chefs using locally sourced ingredients and there is a regular activity programme including physiotherapy, gardening, quizzes and music.

Summer fun is off to a high flying launch

f Florence Symonds enjoys herself

A DOZEN bouncy castles got summer at the Aldingbourne Country Centre off to a flying start. The array of large inflatables provided plenty of enjoyment for the scores of children and their parents who went along to the site on Monday. The play equipment from Bounce About of Selsey was full of excited, bouncing young people within 30 minutes of opening. Jen Sear, the centre's events coordinator, said: "It has been a fantastic start to our summer holidays. "We have worked with Bounce About for a few years now and their bouncy castles are so popular - simple yet effective fun for the family." The day will be followed by plenty of summer fun at the centre on the A27 near Fontwell. A range of fantastic events for all the family is in store. They include Dinosaur Day, AldingBANG Science Day, archery, reptiles, and pirates and princesses. Fans of animals will enjoy the display of the resident birds of prey from Hawking About. More animals, such as alpacas, guinea pigs, donkeys, chickens and ducks can be seen in the centre's open farm . Children can also play in the Enchanted Garden with its castle and train or try out their driving skills on the ride-on tractor. The Woodland Walk is also waiting to be explored and the mini-golf course is a challenge for those seeking a hole in one.

Casablanca If we identify strongly with the characters in some movies, then it is no mystery that “Casablanca” is one of the most popular films ever made. It is about a man and a woman who are in love, and who sacrifice love for a higher purpose. This is immensely appealing; the viewer is not only able to imagine winning the love of Humphrey Bogart or Ingrid Bergman, but unselfishly renouncing it, as a contribution to the great cause of defeating the Nazis. The classic and much-loved romantic melodrama, always found on top-ten lists of films, is a masterful tale of a love triangle, and the political and romantic espionage is set against the backdrop of the wartime conflict between democracy and totalitarianism. Needless to say it is the classic of all classics and will be screened in the equally characteristic setting that is West Sussex’ first ‘drive in’.

The festival pays tribute to the late great Alan Rickman this year and are screening some of his finest work in film in a special retrospective to the actor. Our pick of Alans movies to get down and see this year is ‘Gambit’ where Rickman spectacularly plays Art curator for media tycoon Lord Lionel Shahbandar, who sends employee Harry Deane to acquire a desired piece his employer longs for - Monet's 'Dusk’. However, Harry has no interest in procuring the actual painting for Shahbandar... With the help of beautiful rodeo queen PJ Puznowski, the pair hatch a scheme to fool Shahbandar into

believing that Harry's expert forgery is the real deal and pocketing a hefty sum in the process. But with the con proving harder to pull off than he had first intended, Harry finds himself in increasingly awkward and hilarious situations in order to keep Shahbandar's suspicions at bay, and see the job through to the end. Stanley Tucci and Tom Courtney have amusing cameos. This revisiting of a swinging 1960s UK caper movie written by the Coen Brothers is entertaining and engaging. A delightful light-hearted old fashioned comedy.

Excellent Park Tavern serves food for thought A traditional pub filled with friendly and cheerful staff with a superb menu and mouth-watering cuisine in such a wonderful setting... THE Park Tavern is a place to eat that really does offer something for everyone. From families to students, and dog walkers to couples - the pub, ideally located in the heart of Chichester, does not disappoint. It is a traditional pub filled with friendly, cheerful - and yet not overbearing staff - that serves great homecooked food at impressive prices. But there is something different about this place. The walls are adorned with an eclectic mix of pictures, sayings and mirrors which keep you

smiling as you spot them. It is decorated beautifully, with natural hard wood floors throughout - there is a bar area with wooden stalls and a slightly separate eating area which has a log fire in the middle which I imagine would be the perfect place to hideaway in the winter weather - cosy and snug. My partner and I went along on a Sunday, both very hungry. The pub offered a range of dishes that were full and varied, but that did not overwhelm when making a decision on what delicious dishes to pick.

` "It was a yummy dinner and the Park Tavern is somewhere we will definitely be going back to"

There is a summer menu on offer, filled with tasty treats such as tagliatelle arrabbiata for smoked trout, feta, beetroot and orange salad for £9. Other specials for this time of year include dressed crab with mixed leaf salad and fries and the trusty pub treat, a pint of prawns for £10. We decided to pick from the Park Tavern Sunday menu. On this were a mix of roast dinner options from lamb to beef to a three meat for the more hungry. There were also options such as a double cheeseburger and fries and quiche and salad for those wanting a lighter option. I went for the lamb and my partner went for the beef. The meals were huge. Proper hearty dinners that were clearly homemade and cooked with love and care. The portions were more than generous and we both struggled to finish our plates. As well as the expertly cooked meat, there was swede, roast potatoes, parsnips, cabbage, peas, carrots and a Yorkshire pudding which almost took up the entire plate. It was delicious. Afterwards we were asked about puddings but

METHOD 1. Whisk the egg, milk and cinnamon together in a small bowl until fully combined. Put this to the side. 2. Cut the crusts off your slices of bread and roll them flat with a rolling pin. Spread the Nutella on one side of each slice. Try not to go right to the edges so it does not leak when they are cooking.

7. Take the rolls out of the pan and decorate them with sugar. If you are feeling adventurous, mix some extra cinnamon into the sugar before decorating.

3. Roll each slice of bread into a spiral, like a miniature Swiss roll. 4. Coat the bottom of a frying pan with sunflower oil or melted butter. Put the pan over a medium heat before completing the next step. 5. Dip each roll into the egg mixture that was set aside earlier. Make sure it has an even coating of egg on all sides. The rolls do not need to be soaked in the mixture. 6. Put the egg covered rolls into the frying pan and cook until golden brown. Make sure to turn the rolls so each side is evenly cooked.

El Castizo, top for tapas Culinary delights, warm welcome from friendly staff, superb value and caballeros strumming guitars at this authentic Spanish eatery IF you are visiting Spain then tucking into tapas is surely a prerequisite to your trip? Okay, if it isn't may I be so bold as to suggest it should be? For tapas, effectively large portions of what we would call nibbles, perfectly encapsulates the Spanish relationship with the dining experience. For me, at least. You never know, as well as the relaxed, informal nature of life and the climate in Spain, the allure of this tastebud-tingling cuisine could even play a part in persuading you to live some, if not all, of your life there as one of the thousands of Brit ex-pats who enjoy days in the sun. But you don’t have to be marauding around Madrid, walking in the Andalusian mountains, or catching the rays on the Costas to find yourself consuming excellent tapas in what is virtually an authentic setting — as much as it can be in Chichester, that is. For it is here, to El Castizo, housed in what was THrough the Greenhouse a few years back, in St Pancras, where we set our satnavs on a Saturday night to admire then devour sumptuous dish after dish...all while being serenaded with jangling, punchy, percussive guitars bringing an elaborative flamenco sound to the restaurant to add to an already vibrant ambience. I say ‘found ourselves’ but in actuality it was

anything but happen-stance that we, me and a party of five friends, came to break bread drowned in olive oil here. THat’s because El Castizo is so hugely popular that fair forewarning is essential. Be prepared to book well in advance (maybe even further in advance than that, when I come to think of it). On a latish May evening we arrived full of avaricious anticipation, given the recommendations we’d all been party to from friends, acquaintances and, indeed, complete strangers who had given us the nod on this exceptional eatery. A welcome word to the wise, if you like. Well, two words. Two words, 'THe Genuine', offering an incite into the food available in this cavern of culinary excellence. And allow me to tip you the wink, too. Spanish waitresses, beyond cordial and with smiles as wide as the Tagus, eagerly fussed over our every need after ushering us to our table. In we went, through a throng of excitable diners making the most of the uplifting atmosphere as well as the wine, Estrella beer or whatever was their chosen tipple on that memorable night. What followed was quite simply a mouthwatering Mediterranean masterpiece,

` Waitresses who are beyond cordial, and who boast smiles as wide as the river Tagus at hugely popular Chichester restaurant...make sure you book a table soon for fantastic dining experience

sorry, masterpieces. THe familiar tapas came, and came, and came again. Perfectly piquant, cooked to perfection. But then of course they would have kept coming because, frankly, we kept ordering. After our initial foray into the menu, hoping and succeeding in finding more appetising jewels, we allowed abandon to control our appetite. And so we shared, amidst hearty versions of ‘Happy birthday’ sung by half-squiffy revellers followed by endless celebratory clinks of glasses, plate after plate of tantalising teasers with never a main dish in sight (there was no order to our order, shall I say). Beautiful bites such as exquisite chicken cooked in a spicy vegetable salsa, and delectable mushrooms brought to life with an expert combination of ingredients including onion, garlic, spinach in cream sauce with nutmeg, and served on toasted bread. Next? Calamari, meatballs and fried, cubed potatoes in spicy sauce. Hot but heavenly. Room for the chorizo sausage cooked slowly in cider? Tick. Prawns? Sure thing: we chose two dishes and the spicy king prawns, cooked in garlic, olive oil and guindillas (chillies) managed to edge the rather more sedate yet perfectly cooked prawns served in white wine and

smoked paprika. A close run thing, though, it has to be said. And still more arrived: sensational yet simple marinated anchovies in vinegar and garlic; traditional tortilla far too tempting to resist even though an enemy of my everexpanding waistline. And at this point I need to sound the 'dish of the evening' alarm — scrub that, make it a claxon — for the 'parcelaf de queso', or, to you and me goat cheese wrapped in serrano ham, served with salad and balsamic dressing. Incredible, in short. Just like the entire experience. Replete, we made our way into the night, the last strains of Spanish guitars announcing our departure. To conclude, if you want excellent food, served by affable, polite and professional staff, and all at exceptionally reasonable prices, head for Chichester’s slice of Spain, El Castizo. Any regrets? Yes, that we’d not been here before and that we didn’t have room to try the mixed paella. Of course, there is always the next time… providing we can get a table! You can call the restaurant on 01243 788988 to make your booking or for more information. CARL ELDRIDGE

REMEMBER that beautiful moment when you step out of the school gates knowing you have six wonderful free weeks. The end of early mornings, routines and homework. The six weeks stretched out before you. I remember hot summer days down Portsmouth Lido and the Hilsea Ramparts. Many parents love the change of routine but for some it is marred by the guilt of working, struggling to find childcare. In a far corner of the UK rumbling away is the threat to let schools set their term dates raising the possibility of summer holidays being cut in England. What might the consequences be?

Line by Line LINE dance group Line by Line will be showing their footwork at Pagham on Parade next month. Their members will be at the community event at midday on August 21 for visitors to enjoy a taster session. Regular sessions are held from 6pm-8pm on Tuesdays at Pagham Village Hall and two classes from 6.16pm on Mondays at Aldwick Baptist Church and also from 2pm on Wednesdays. One of the dancers, Shirley Spurling, said: "I'm sure the best thing about line dancing is the friends you make -not

just casual friends but great friends and friends for life. "I know of a lot of people where the dancing is a lifeline to them, an escape for others but it's such a sense of achievement when you see them dancing not only for me but for them too. "I periodically advertise for new beginners but mostly it's recommendation, word of mouth. "Line dancing is under the misconception it's all yee ha and cowboy boots. Yes, we dance to country music but also some very up to date hits. More details from Shirley on 01243 698857.

The six-week summer holiday may be a thing of the past. Will schools in England to be allowed to set their own term dates, under plans to give them more autonomy? But will there be knock-on effects? There is of course the holiday costs and childcare. At the moment, holidays cost much more from mid-July to the end of August, because that is when families with children must take their breaks. People with no children can go at other times of year for less money. And the prospect of knocking two weeks off the summer and spreading it over the rest of the year would please many for whom it is not so much the cost of childcare as the logistics of keeping children entertained for a single six-week block.

To celebrate serving the People of Donnington over the past 4 years • BBQ Tasting How will children feel•about their lazy summer •stolen Day • Saturday 28thfrom May, 10am - 2pm Wishhaving us a Happy Birthday Free to All them? It's hard to imagine them being pleased at the prospect, but some experts say the idea of them having a long and enriching break at the moment is misguided. While people may argue that the long holiday encourages families to indulge in quality time together, fewer parents than before are able to devote the entire holiday to their children because of work commitments. "Children need downtime to be with their families, but six weeks is too long. Even parents who are not working send them off to their mates, or cricket, or camp - there is a lot of shunting too and fro," says child psychologist Dr Pat Spungin. In reality, research shows, most kids spend a lot of the holidays in front of the TV or computer screen. In the past few decades a huge industry has sprung up providing improving time-fillers, such as summer sports camps, art or acting courses.

Opening a new restaurant? . Having

a refurb? . Serve great food? . Got a special offer you want to shout about?

But these are out of the financial reach of many parents. The long holiday can be tough for some children who don't have that kind of stimulation, according to Spungin. One of the most controversial factors in setting the length of the summer holiday is the debate over how much children can forget -children's learning regresses during the long break. Whatever you think – I can’t erase from my mind that wonderful summer holiday feeling!

POPPIES are among the wild flowers which have created a colourful corner in an Aldwick park. The distinctive red flowers have been joined by a mass of others to turn the southeastern section of West Park into a floral delight. The eye-catching sight at the Arun District Councilowned site has created plenty of comments on social media and has drawn the attention of many passers-by as they have made their way to the seafront in the summer weather. Jan Malpas, the chairman of the Friends of West Park, said: "People are going crazy about this area. "I've had emails and people coming up to me commentating upon how

fantastic this wild flower area looks with the wonderful colours and how it is acting as a hub for insects." The poppies were planted two years ago as one of a series of sites around the Bognor Regis area to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War. Jan helped to sow the poppies with Arun's contractor, ISS. The company bought 100 packs of Flanders poppy seeds from the Royal British Legion as part of its national campaign to highlight the centenary of the war and the sacrifices of those who fought in it. She also asked the council to provide a plaque at the site to explain its meaning.

Social and economic benefits A BRAND new development of four high quality homes, developed on land owned by West Sussex County Council, has gone on sale in Orchard Street, Chichester. The properties, consisting of two semi-detached and two detached four bedroom family homes, is the first of a new initiative to develop land owned by the County Council which is no longer required for operational use. The project is designed to unlock the value of the site, which will allow the Council to reinvest in further projects in order to bring social and economic benefits to the county. Called Orchard Grove, it is hoped the houses will be finished and ready to move into in the autumn. They are now being marketed by estate agency Henry Adams and 50% are already sold. Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “This is one of the first projects of its type that we are developing under our PropCo initiative. “We are ensuring that the site provides high quality housing suited to the local area, using local businesses as part of the project team. Arundel-based architect Neil Holland and Chichester based interior designer Rebecca Leivars have given these homes a classical yet contemporary feel, whilst family builder W Stirland is responsible for their construction. “This focused, local approach to building homes has meant we can engage with independent businesses in the area and is the first of many schemes which will follow.” PropCo was set up to help manage the County Council’s estate management for council sites no longer in use to support wider community and economic benefits. The land in Orchard Street became surplus to educational requirements in 2000 after the closure of a school canteen based on the site.

VOTING registration HOUSEHOLDS across the Arun district are receiving one of their most important forms of the year. The household inquiry form is part of Arun District Council's annual voter registration canvass and it is a vital way of ensuring that information on the electoral register is up to date. Anyone who has moved home, changed their name or has somebody in a household turning 18 in the next three years will find the form particularly important. Voters who took part in the recent EU referendum last month will still need to respond to the form in order to remain registered in 2017. Nigel Lynn, Arun District Council's chief executive officer and also the electoral registration officer for the district, said: "This form is not a registration form but you do need to complete it. "By checking, completing and returning these forms, we can ensure that registration continues and you will be included in future elections. "Encouraging our young voters is so important to the future of the Arun district and I encourage you to ensure these details are completed on the form and returned as soon as possible. "More information can be found at http://www.gov.uk/ registration or http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk" The HEF has been designed to be as easy as possible to complete. Responses can be made online or by SMS. Full details of how to do this are in the letter on the front of the form. It can also be completed over the phone or by returning the paper form in the traditional way. Residents with further questions can contact elections@arun.gov.uk or 01903 737616.

Settlement has a Post Office as its only business

OVER 3,500 miles away in Canada is a township called Bognor, which I have visited. The first visit was a 150 mile journey north into Grey County, from Toronto...The first sign we saw was “Bognor – a proud part of Grey County”. On arrival we hoped to meet the residents; visit the shops etc. Where was the school? About six miles away. Where do people work? About 6-10 miles away in Owen Sound, on the shores of Georgian Bay, leading into Lake Huron. Where were the shops? There aren’t any. Everyone had to travel to Owen Sound for all these services.

The electoral register stood at 145 people in October 2002 and there were 52 houses. It is not quite the thriving community we were expecting. However, what we did find was a small group of people, talking outside the Post Office, the only business in Bognor. They were only too eager to hear about our Bognor Regis while they told us their story. The obvious main question was: Why is this community called Bognor? Back in the 1840s, a Mr and Mrs Trotter bought an area of land near the Big Head River, which they farmed and built a mill and a dam on the river. This area was bought in

1871 by Peter Quance who established a flour and grist mill he named Sydenham Mills. On January 5, 1873, a Post Office was established with Peter as the first Postmaster. Within 12 months in 1874 he was superseded by Mr CH Heming who quickly realised there was confusion with another Sydenham in Frontenac County. The obvious solution was to change the name, but to what? His father had emigrated from Bognor, England, and suggested its name. Hence, in 1879, the area became officially known as Bognor. As you would expect from a small community, there are many flourishing activities - one being the Women’s Institute, which began in 1912. Not for these ladies a calendar to tell people who they are, but street signs! The streets of the area had for years been without clear street signs and in 1982 the WI donated $363 to buy nine new street signs and

seven standards for $363. In the 1970s the WI also began catering facilities for weddings, other events, clubs and societies. This lasted for over ten years, but closed due to increased legislation and the ageing membership. No difference to the problems encountered here. The main streets are John, William, Main, Queen and Frank Street in a grid. All residents received a letter in 1966 asking about street lighting. The residents formed a committee to discuss the matter because of the cost of the lights. The streets of Bognor were not paved or levelled until 1992. The Post Office is today in the centre of Bognor and is the centre for news. Occasional mail is received for Bognor in England. Bognor in 1880 consisted of the blacksmith, carriage and coffin maker, tinsmith, butcher, two shoemakers and a cooper but no publician because the land's original owner was teetotal.

Dig deep and back the Rocks, urges Nye Camp's Pearce by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk JACK Pearce is urging businesses to back the Rocks as they prepare for a new Ryman Premier Division campaign. Bognor stage their sponsorship draw evening on Wednesday (August 3) and more than 100 firms and individuals have dug deep to be in with a chance of being drawn out of the hat to be the main sponsor. The package includes shirt logo, match programme and ground advertising and four match tickets with boardroom hospitality to every home game. And there are other packages such as match ball sponsorship up for grabs on the night, along with entertainment and a buffet. Pearce, who has been at Nyewood Lane as a player, manager, chairman (and raffle ticket seller) for more than 40 years, says the club has enjoyed some tremendous financial support from in and around the area over the

years and for that he is grateful. He said: “It’s a great night and we are looking forward to it. To be honest, without the support of those who generously enter the draw and donate to us we would struggle. “But the club have never had an investor or a consortium willing to bankroll us and I believe that is what we would need if we are to push on and progress as a club. “Last season we missed out on promotion by a single point and fans say, ‘how come we always miss out?’ But when you consider that the team that were champions (Hampton & Richmond Borough) had someone hand them more than £100,000 you get an idea of just what we have to compete with. “Worthing, along the road, were in big financial trouble last year. Now someone has come in and paid off the debts, paid for a new 3G pitch and provided money for players and he must have spent £600,000 to £1million. “I’ve been saying it for years

Falcons fly high to victory as Spitfires are shot down CHICHESTER Falcons went 6 and 1 as they shot down Southampton Spitfires in a softball encounter at Oaklands Park. The Falcons were shaky when they fielded in the first, with two overthrows eluding first baseman Lucy Morris. But pitcher Jason Mercer settled things down with a strikeout and a tidy 1-3 play to limit the Spitfires to a single run. Mercer wasted no time responding at bat with a leadoff walk, while Milko Giuffrida singled to left field ready for David Morris to send him home with a 2-out triple, putting the Falcons 2-1 ahead in this clash on Sunday. The Spitfires were shut out in the second thanks to a spectacular catch by Ally Warr (right) deep in centre field, followed by pinpoint glove work from

The Falcons continued the offense onslaught with Bartolo Garofalo reaching second base with his first ever atbat for the Falcons, Louise Rowe slogged her first double of the season out to right field, and Carrie Suhr knocked over the Spitfires’ shortstop’s head to bring them both in to score. The Falcons were running away with the game by the fourth inning as Clive Janes continued to show consistency, hitting 2 for 2 on

the day as Bronte Harvey continued to improve, drawing a walk ready for Stefan Panayotopoulos to drill his trademark line drive out to centre right. The Falcons continued to bat right through the order in the fifth to end the game early with the score at 27-5 win. The final score was reverted to 20-5 on a mercy ruling. day on August 21. Coached by David Morris, Nick Harris, Vicki Cathie and Clive Janes from the seniors team, of 26 kids aged 11 to 16 completed the roster. The team were also grateful to have two visits from Robbie Robison, who brought his expertise and experience to focus on mechanics and fundamentals. David Morris said: “Having Robbie along was a massive boost. THE Surrey Slog takes place near Ewhurst and is an appropriately named event as level running ground is replaced with over 2,000 foot of steep assents and descents. On Sunday four Tone Zoners tackled this with Colin Hiscock and Ian Bayley leading the way and finishing two minutes apart. The course, known for its beautiful hilly tracks, challenged runners on one of the hardest half marathons in the South. The other two runners were Laura Newell and Paul Coe who finished in 2:17. This was a tremendous effort by Paul as the previous evening at 8pm he set off from Shoreham, taking part in the Lunar-tic Marathon along side Simon Bosworth. He said: ”It was tough mentally due to the concentration needed for the last 16 miles in the dark. My pace dropped in the latter stages because of it and due to the tiredness setting in towards

midnight.” Both Paul and Simon finished in 4:31 And at Walton-onThames, Helena Wilmers (above) ran the Elmbridge 10k in 56:20. Danny Mahoney ran the Down Tow up Flow Half Marathon. It's described as a gloriously scenic, flat, multi-terrain, point-to-point half marathon along the Thames towpath. The route is run in reverse direction each year, in 2016 it is “Up Flow” therefore starting in Windsor and finishing in Marlow. Danny finished in 1:34 to finish third in his age category. Bennett's boys face the Rocks by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk

by Robson Friend news@sussexpost.co.uk

Tyson fan Kulis is tipped for the top DAVID Kulis will look back on a successful season with Ockley ABC, by taking his international Box Cup medal and certificate across the pond to New York to visit his parents. Polish-born Bognorian Kulis' parents reside in the Big Apple and will welcome him to their Brooklyn home this summer on his annual visit. The Ockley light-heavyweight, 15, wears his international club Box Cup championship silver medal proudly round his neck, after fighting out a barnstormer of a final with Tommy Kerrigan, last January in Sweden. Giving away over 20kg to his opponent, and ahead on points, coach Faz Chitima threw in the towel to halt the contest declaring Kulis the runner up. "There was a lot of big punches going in from both boxers," reasoned Chitima of the stoppage. "Although David was ahead on points, we didn't want to put him in the position of getting fatigued and having to fend off a boy 20kg heavier than him." Kulis is one of boxing's characters. Many people will remember him from his elated victory dance after a stoppage win at the Butlins dinner show in November of last year. His tough, come-forward style is a product of his humble upbringing. He came to England aged eight and what Kulis appreciates most about this country is the fact he "can go to school here" — a privilege denied to him while growing up in Poland. While his mother and father moved across to the States, Kulis made the switch to England, living with his sister and grandmother. And it was the move up to secondary school which brought about the familiar story of why he started boxing. "I was getting picked on by some older boys," he reveals. "I walked past the gym in Ockley Road and wanted to start training so I could learn to defend myself." So after falling in love with the sport, The Regis schoolboy quickly became one of the most dedicated kids in the gym, going for early morning runs with Chitima and even taking on a cleaning job in the gym. With his

growing enthusiasm came a thirst for knowledge of the history of the sport. Being a boxing historian myself, I am impressed at how knowledgeable Kulis is of the sport's past champions and mega-fights, especially when it comes to Iron Mike Tyson "On a visit to my mother's, in Brooklyn we were watching TV when a clip of Mike Tyson came on," recalls Kulis. "He has been my favourite fighter ever since. "His speed was mesmerising and his punches so precise. My mother and father live in the same city where he grew up." Like Tyson, Kulis is well above the average weight for his age, usually leaving him at a height, weight, age or experience disadvantage every time he steps in the ring. It doesn't deter the young lion though. He will literally go in with anyone, proving it on a daily basis by sparring seasoned pros such as myself, Alex Gibbons and Southampton knockout artist Joe Pigford. "I am not afraid to fight anyone because I want to prove to myself and my family how good I am," declared the international box cup silver medalist. If he carries on with the same determination and mental toughness he has shown so far, we may just be celebrating Bognor's first national heavyweight champion sooner than you think. Remember, you read it here first, folks!

CAPTAIN Sean Heather led from the front to secure triumphant Middleton a place in the Sussex Premier League Gray-Nicolls T20 Cup to be played at Sussex CC HQ. Middleton will be in action at Hove next month after a semi-final win over Roffey on Sunday. The finals day takes

place on August 21 where Horsham 1st XI, Three Bridges and Hastings Priory 2nd XIs are also bidding for trophy glory. In the game that secured them a trip to Hove, Middleton won the toss and elected to field and the visitors reached 158 for 7 (20 overs), with wickets falling from the deliveries of Brandon Hanley, Jamie Thompson (both two), Keelan Shoulders and Will Searle. In bat,

PAGHAM boss Mark Bennett will watch his new-look squad face their toughest test to date when they play Bognor in a pre-season friendly tonight (Friday). Bennett has recruited significantly over the summer and there is an optimistic mood in the Lions’ camp that they can mount a serious challenge at the top of the Southern Combination League Premier table. The former Littlehampton chief Bennett has raided his former club for Shay Wiggans and Dan Kempson and has also drafted in Horsham’s Kieron Pamment and Jordan Clark. And Ben Mepham and Ryan Morey have also joined the Lions along with Ruben French, who switched in the summer following a stint at Chichester City where he was skipper. French, who may be blowing a tad after

partying for a week in Ibiza on his stag-do, believes that the new faces at the club have settled in very well. He said: “The manager has brought in new players and so far they have fitted in very well. There is certainly a focus and a decent amount of confidence about us going in to the new campaign. "But, of course, we know there is plenty of hard work ahead of us to if we are to be successful. "We also have a great community feel at the club and actually take a decent following of fans who even travel to away games and at this level that is very unusual, and the players are grateful to gthe fans." Bognor boss Jamie Howell takes the Rocks to Nyetimber Lane for the encounter fresh from hosting Portsmouth in a pre-season friendly. Meanwhile, Pagham are in action again when they face Sidlesham at home on Sunday, kick-off 2.30pm.

Get dazzler Davis! f Rocks' Davis, far left, in action Pictures: IMOGEN NUNN

by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell will pull out all the stops to land exciting Brighton winger Jason Davis following his manof-the-match display against Pompey at Nyewood Lane. Rocks went down 4-1 to the Fratton Park outfit in a well-attended pre-season friendly match on Wednesday night. But the defeat gave Howell and assistant Darin Kilpatrick plenty to be happy about, chief amongst which was the polished performance of the impressive Davis. The Albion youngster was joined by left-back Dylan Barnett on loan from the Seagulls for the night, with Howell now

no doubt keen to wrap up longer loan deals for the duo. It remains to be seen if the pair, both members of the U23 set-up at the Amex, will pull on Rocks colours again tonight (Friday) when Howell takes his charges to Nyetimber Lane to play another friendly, against Pagham. Pompey took the lead through Conor Chaplin, before James Fraser hit the bar for Bognor. Curtis Main made it 2-0 leading up to the break but soon after the interval the home side pulled a goal back. Harvey Whyte was on hand to prod home after visiting keeper Paul Jones had fumbled. Michael Smith and Adam May added two more goals for Paul Cook’s outfit to make it a comfortable win.
