Children's art goes on show

SO LONG, OLD GIRL FORMER Mud Club operator Harvey Bailey has spoken of his sadness at seeing the premises destroyed by fire.

Mr Bailey and his wife, Emma Bailey, ran the popular venue on Bognor Regis seafront for five years.

He took to social media to express his thoughts after the building went up in flames at the start of this week.

His comments received dozens of responses from those who had enjoyed themselves in the club.

The Bognor Regis couple opened the 400-capacity Mud Club above the Beach Restaurant and fish and chip shop in 2005.

The premises are believed to have been

a club since the 1970s and were formerly called The Empire.

It has been empty since the Mud Club closed. Arun District Council, which owns the building, gave planning approval in February 2012 for the first and second floors to be converted into eight flats but the work had not started.

Residents urged to spell out their housing protests GET personal, anti-housing campaigners at Pagham's biggest public meeting in years were told.

About 300 of them filled the ballroom at Church Farm Holiday Village to express their anger about 3,000 homes being planned for the area.

Jackie Lovell, the secretary of Pagham and Aldwick Green Fields Action Movement, told them: "Make it personal, make it powerful when you write in about these plans.

"The more you put your personal experiences in, the more powerful your views become.

"Think about that when you are putting your draft letters about this housing together. Your letter might be the one that makes a difference. I'm involved because my sister's car crashed into a ditch along Pagham Road. I was lucky. She walked away. But I don't want someone getting hurt on my conscious.

"I don't want our roads to be affected by the number of all of these houses."

Her comments were among those to be greeted with applause at last Friday's twohour meeting.

It was organised by PAGAM because of widespread dismay about the impact of large planned housing estates at Hook Lane, Sefter Road and Summer Lane in Pagham as well as just across the Bersted boundary at Morrells Farm/Chalcraft Lane.

PAGAM's chairman, Gill Homer, said the formal plans for the Sefter Road and Hook

Lane schemes were imminent.

Pagham Parish Council planning committee chairman Cllr David Huntley said a motion would be put to the council's next meeting to reflect residents' views.

"Unelected inspectors and officials have over-ridden the wishes of the community.

"They can do this for so long but there is an election coming up and we will have our say," he said.

Cllr Ray Radmall, Pagham Parish Council's chairman, said it had hired traffic consultants to get an expert opinion about the state of roads in the area.

"These plans are something people feel betrayed over. We must not be 'nimby' about this. That would not be right.

"But we have some unique and severe infrastructure problems in this area.

Pagham Road can be very dangerous.

"We had two crashes there last week.

We've had people ploughing into ditches and going through hedges," he said.

Bersted and Aldwick parish councillors Gill Yeates and Cllr Michael Warden also gave their personal views about the matter.

MP Nick Gibb said: "I take a keen intrest in this issue. The government has to find housing for a growing population for young people trying to get on the housing market.

"Very few people under 30 can afford a house. That's the reason for the government to seek more housing to be built right across the country."

The risk of flooding caused by the homes was also raised by the residents.

Large sites for housing due to be finalised by next spring NEXT March should see the final set of sites for large scale housing plans agreed.

That was the deadline given by Arun District Council's senior planning officer Karl Roberts to the meeting.

Mr Roberts, the council's director of planning and economic regeneration, said: "We have a range of 12 strategic sites. We have not yet finished our assessment work on them for transport and for surface and foul water drainage."

The locations included Ford airfield for a potential 1,500 homes.

Those sites finally chosen by councillors would be put to a planning

inspector next summer with a final decision in about a year's time.

He explained how Arun's housing target had nearly doubled from 580 dwellings a year in 2012 to about 1,000 now. Its housing need had been assessed as 919 annually and it might have to accommodate homes for which other councils lacked space. That would mean 20,000 new homes in the local plan land use blueprint from 2011-31.

"That is what the government requires us to do. We don't have an option. If we don't produce a local plan, they will require someone to come in and do it for us," he said.

WORK continued yesterday to knock down the remains of a fire-wrecked building on Bognor Regis seafront.

Contractors remained at the former Mud Club and Beach Restaurant and fish and chip shop to carry on making the site safe.

A group of 30 residents of neighbouring Cavendish House were still waiting to return to their flats. Last night was their fifth night away from their homes.

It is believed a fire exit from their premises is blocked by rubble from what was left of the three-storey structure.

Arun District Council has taken the lead on the clear up operation and appointed Hobden's Property Management to liaise with the affected residents.

A council spokeswoman said: "The site needs to be made safe. The gass supply has been disconnected and, once the structure has been made safe, then the electricity supply will also be reconnected.

"The residents of Cavendish House are still waiting for the clear up operation to be completed before taking up residence.

"They have moved to alternative locations as they await re-entry to their properties.

"The residents are being updated twice a

day about the progress.

"At this stage, the return of the residents is the priority and it is still too early in the recovery phase to make decisions about the future of the site."

The evacuated residents were put up in the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham for one night as the firefighting operation was taking place.

Demolition work at the site between The Esplanade's junctions with Norfolk Street and Waterloo Square began on Tuesday.

One of the 12 or so people who saw the demolition start was Bognorian Martin Sparshott, 55. "It's a bit sad seeing this because it's part of Bognor which is going.

"I remember when the club was The Empire. I knew Keith Parker who ran it and I used to work for him as a painter and decorator. I had some good nights up there.

"They did nice chips at the Beach. I used to go there about once a month," he said.

Other customers have given their sympathies with the business's owners.

A road closure along The Esplanade remained in force yesterday from West Street to Norfolk Street and along Norfolk Street and eastern Waterloo Square.

Fire experts wait FIRE experts are waiting to get the goahead to start their investigations into the ferocious blaze.

They will enter the remains of the building to being searching for possible causes once it has been declared safe.

Some 60 firefighters tackled the blaze at its worst. The 14 crews came from as far afield as Havant, Emsworth, Lancing and Shoreham because of the extent of the fire.

The alarm was raised at 3.47am on Sunday. The first crew was at the scene within eight minutes. Firefighters stayed there until 3.57pm - just over 12 hours before they declared the fire was out.

Gales of more than 40mph made conditions 'extremely difficult', according to a West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman.

Its lead officer at the scene, Adrian Murphy, said at the time: "This incident has taken place in the midst of a major storm and it was difficult to stand when we arrived on the seafront.

"Our crews have worked hard for the past few hours with support from a number of other agencies."

Praise for the work of the emergency services in coping with the devastating blaze has been given by the town mayor.

Cllr Pat Dillon said: "All of us at the town council would like to express our sincere thanks to the West Sussex Fire and

Rescue and everyone who helped during the terrible incident in the early hours of Sunday morning at The Esplanade.

"Working under such extreme weather conditions, firefighters successfully managed to get the blaze under control and people to safety, for which we are extremely grateful.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the residents and business owners affected by the lasting damage caused. The council will work in partnership with other agencies in finding the best resolution."

Hopes for the future of site TOWN resident Jason Peters has summed up the views of many with his hopes for the future of the site.

He wrote on social media that the destruction of the fish and chip business and the restaurant was a massive loss to the town.

"One thing seems certain. Many folks, both local and out-of-towners, all agree that we lost the best fish'n'chip shop in town," he stated.

"Let's hope the lovely peeps that owned and worked there for all these years can rebuild their business and start feeding our hungry seaside bellies once again.

"A massive thank you to the fire service for bringing this raging fire under control in such adverse weather conditions.

"I live close to the area of the fire and, I'm telling you, it was blowing a friggin' barney along the prom in the early hours - and a big hat's off to whoever reported the blaze.

"I'm sure many close flats were saved because of this."

Residents rally to protect trees against homes plan

Robert Bridges is wanted for recall to prison having breached the conditions of his release licence.

Bridges also has links to Chichester as well as the Thurrock, Aveley and South Ockendon areas of Essex and the E1 area in London's East End. He is white, 6ft tall, and of medium build with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Bridges had been released from Lewes Prison part of the way through a two month sentence for theft imposed at Worthing Magistrates' Court on September 7.

"However, the Probation Service require his return to prison for breaching his release conditions."

Anyone who sees Bridges, or knows where he might be, is asked not to approach him but to contact Sussex Police on 101 or 999.

ANGRY Middleton residents have formed a group to fight for the future of protected trees.

The Silver Birch Action Group has been created to stop a maple and two ash from being damaged by threatened development.

Drive resident Louise Alger, said the scheme was deeply unpopular.

A total of 203 letters of objection to the plans has been received by Arun District Council. Its councillors are due to debate the application next Wednesday. Mrs Alger intends to speak before the debate to outline her fears for the trees if the development gets the go ahead.

"The only access to this site is where the trees are standing," she said. "I have paid for an arboriculturist's report which clearly says the proposed development will damage the future health and vitality of these trees.

"The tree expert - Bernie Harverson - states that the work to be carried out on the site will create significant root disturbance very close to the ash tree and well within its root protection area. He also says the trees are perfectly healthy."

Mrs Alger's joy was shortlived because the county council sent in its plans for 13 houses on the site the next month. She worked hard to mobilise opposition to the proposals. The risk of flooding is another major concern of residents if the farmland is developed. The site has been left empty for more than two years.

A report by planning officer Anita Gardner to Arun's members for the development control committee states: "The proposed site entrance and access road located within the root protection zones of the protected ash trees will be formed using a 'no dig' construction in order to protect the root system of these trees.

This is an industry recognised standard and allows for the access road to be laid in this portion of the site."

Young art on show A MAGICAL world of art is on show in Bognor Regis.

The creativity of some 40 children makes up the Young at Art exhibition.

Vibrant, energetic and exhilarating is some of the praise lavished on the display in an empty shop in The Arcade.

The exhibition of the 15 large paintings and a similar number of smaller ones opened on Tuesday and continues between 10am-6pm today and tomorrow.

Entry is free.

Brother and sister Lubek and Lena Janik were among those whose work is on show. Lena, eight, helped with three of the 1.5m X 1.5m artistic creations. One comprised dark blue, red, orange and white. She said: "It looks like a magical world because it's got lots of colours mixed together.

"It's the first time my paintings have gone on show to the public but one has

been on display at my school for a long time."

The painting by Lubek, 11, contains orange, purple, blue, pink, red and green among its colours. He said: "My painting looks quite cool. I like it that we didn't just paint. We flicked our paintbrushes afterwards to make an effect."

The art was created last August bank holiday Monday in the Place St Maur in a project co-ordinated by town centre manager Toyubur Rahman.

He said: "The exhibition looks amazing.

We didn't intend to stage an exhibition but the quality of the work was so good we thought it deserved to be shown."

Artists Gerry Foronda and Alice Novotna oversaw the painting . Alice said: "We've had 50 visitors on our first day, which is good. We've had really nice comments from people. Some thought the work had been created by professional artists."

OPERATORS of a Bognor Regis restaurant are challenging a decision to close it down.

Sean Parker and Rachel Searle have appealed against the revocation of the premises licence for SeaFish agreed by Arun District Council.

Speaking outside the hearing on Wednesday afternoon, venue managing director Mr Parker said: "We accept the council's decision but we are going to appeal it because we have our points and we thought there was a lot of one-sided evidence in the hearing."

Mrs Searle, the premises' supervisor, said she expected the appeal to be lodged in the next few days.

"We want to continue working with the council to find a licence which is the best fit for our premises. We are at SeaFish because we want Bognor to be bit more of a cultural place," she said.

Mr Parker and Ms Searle have 21 days in which to appeal. If they do, they can continue to run their business in line with its existing licence until their case is heard.

The decision to revoke the premises licence for the Aldwick Road business was made after a four-hear hearing of Arun's licensing committee.

HOSPITAL patients from Bognor Regis and Chichester could be left without a bedside trolley service, volunteers have warned.

The Friends of Chichester Hospitals says the service is under threat because its shop by the main entrance to St Richard's will become a commercial outlet under a new contract awarded by NHS officials.

Friends' chairman Jane Ramage said the group's members - and their colleagues at Worthing and Southlands hospitals - had been left deeply disappointed by the decision.

"This decision has come as a heavy blow to the men and women who put their hearts into serving the needs of others, helping to lighten the strain of illness upon countless patients and their families.

"The (NHS) trust has stated that it will make suitable alternative space available for the Friends to relocate our retail shop 'in the heart of the hospital' and that it hopes the trolley service will continue.

"Although this process has been running for five months, we have yet to learn what space in the 'heart' of St Richard's is envisaged," she said.

"Concern remains regarding the future viability of the Friends' daily ward trolley service, which we know is a highlight of the day for most patients, if a full high quality shop service as at present cannot be replicated to support it."

The Friends' shop had been in place for more than 20 years and its stock was tailored to ensure all the possible needs of patients, visitors and staff was met, said Mrs Ramage.

That popularity was shown by the thousands of supporters who had signed petitions which backed the Friends. Despite the uncertainty, Mrs Ramage paid tribute to the dedication of the 90 Friends' helpers who had continued to stack shelves and push the trolley in recent months.

She pledged the charity would continue to put patients first as it had done since 1948. Donations to all three hospitals - partly from the shops and cafes totalled £800,000-£1m in the past ten years.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust has awarded the retail catering contract to Compass Group. It said this would lead to improve services.

Costa Coffee would be available with pastries and pannines from DeliMarche, a full-service Spice of Life restaurant and convenience retailer Amigo.

The contract would see a £1.1m investment in the hospitals' main entrances and a further £450,000 a year for patient services.

Trust director of facilities and estates David Jones said: "We'll be improving the availability of and choice of food and drink within our hospitals while securing additional funding for services and equipment."

Nurse is charged with sexual assaults

A BOGNOR Regis man has been charged with sexual assaults on patients at two hospitals while he was working as a nurse.

Stephen Board, 66, now unemployed, of Linden Road, is due to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court next Tuesday.

He is charged with three offences of sexual as-

sault on a woman then aged 78 at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester last December 10, four offences of sexual assault on a woman then aged 34 at Worthing Hospital on February 7, 2008, and two offences of sexual assault on a woman then aged 19 at Worthing Hospital on January 28, 2006.

Sussex Police's head of licensing and public safety, Jean Irvine, said officers had visited the premises several times and seen customers drinking without eating. This was shown on videos from body-worn cameras of two police officers.

"We do not have any confidence in the management of this venue. Revocation of the licence is a draconian step. But maybe this needs a clean slate - apply for a new licence as a live music venue and, if it goes through, run it as that licence."

Sarah Meeten, Arun's head of licensing, said: "This about is a lack of co-operation and suitability of these premises for us.

"Are these people capable of operating these premises in a way in which they uphold the conditions and working with licensing officers?

"We have had verbal reassurances but no evidence they have been acted upon and the issues at the premises remain."

TOWN resident Jocelyn Smith is to lead a meeting about yobs in Bognor Regis.

Mrs Smith will spearhead an informal gathering of about six other townsfolk next Tuesday with Arun District Council's community safety manager, Georgina Brouette.

The meeting is being held after Mrs Smith and two councillors met with Sussex Police Inspector Marc Clothier on Monday to discuss the police's response to a spate of antisocial behaviour.

She said: "The people deserve to be heard and they deserve the right to know exactly what is going on.

"Everyone needs to come together and try to make things work and make information accessible."

News of the meetings was given to the town council's policy and resources committee on Monday.

Cllr Pat Dillon, who joined Mrs Smith at her meeting with Insp Clothier, said: "We are not going to hold a big public meeting - we're not sure anyone would benefit from it but a small, informal meeting.

"The police are doing a lot in the background about this matter that we just don't know about.

"Jocelyn will put information as bullet points to people in her circle on Facebook. We are elected by people and they need to come to us with their concerns and we will take them up to the next level."

The other councillor present, Paul Wells, said: "We could have a meeting at a more local level to explain and to get an understanding of what the police are doing in the community."

Theatre charity rejects plans for new venue

OPERATORS of the theatre in Bognor Regis have rejected plans to redevelop the site.

Arun Arts says it is totally against a scheme to demolish the Regis Centre and replace it with a 1,100-seat venue.

The charity's chairman, Hazel Latus, says it has no objections to the regeneration scheme by the Sir Richard Hotham Project going ahead. But it regarded them as an unacceptable move into the unknown.

Mrs Latus said: "The Sir Richard Hotham Project have put in place plans that affect us if passed. They want to pull our building down to make way for flats.

The idea being that we would split our usage requirements with the new venue.

"Even offered first call on dates, it would not be practical. Whilst we applaud choice and obviously wish them well, the trust agree as do our members and volunteers that we cannot afford to be part of it by giving up our site.

"Our business model would not survive if we lost out current building and having to wait for a new build would ensure we would lose our volunteers and likely our business - which is growing."

The comments from Mrs Latus have been publicised by Arun District Council as part of its ongoing consultation into

the £80m redevelopment.

The Sir Richard Hotham Project wants to use the Regis Centre site - with its 350 seat Alexandra Theatre - for flats, a 59room hotel and a boardwalk with leisure facilities such as a spa and gym plus shops, bars and restaurants.

It proposes to build a 1,100 seat theatre and conference centre on the Hothamton car park along with a 48 bedroom hotel.

The project's promoters have included Arun Arts in a standalone theatre or centre in their latest plans.

Christmas lights switch on CONFETTI cannon full of rose petals will fire when Christmas lights come to life in Bognor Regis this weekend.

The six cannon are just part of the hours of special events tomorrow leading up to the annual switch on of the special illuminations.

The day has been organised by Bognor Regis Town Council to bring some sparkle into the season. The switch on will take place around the High Street/ London Road junction about 5.30pm.

The cast of Beauty and the Beast at the Regis Centre next month will help to turn on the lights along with Father Christmas. The panto stars will also judge a Beauty and the Beast fancy dress competition.

The fun will begin at 1pm with live music on the main stage. The acts will include the Ultimate Gary Barlow Experience, Cheryl Craven and Anna Foye, representing Rox Music and Arts.

DJ Nic Dunnaway, of Bognorphenia, will be on hand with some festive mixes to fill in any gaps in the live sounds.

Folksy footstompin' rhythms and engaging lyricism from Noble Jacks will lead up to the switch on.

Choirs and brass bands will also be playing in London Road during the afternoon. Classical music will fill The Arcade. There will also be Illuminated Icicle Queen stilt walkers, fairground rides and the prospect of a sprinkling of snow.

Andrew is picked by top rugby club YOUNG rugby star Andrew Fadera has been selected by one of Europe's top clubs.

Middleton resident Andrew, 14, has joined the developing player programme of Harlequins.

The Aviva Premier League outfit invited him to join their academy of top class junior players based on his debut for Sussex.

Andrew attended his first of the Quins' monthly sessions at Brighton RFC last week - and said the experience left him wanting more.

He said: "The sessions are all about developing my rugby skills and there's weight training twice a month, which will help as well.

"The first session was a lot more intense than anything I've ever known before but I felt I got a lot out of it."

Andrew began his sporting life playing football, but his growth - he stands 6ft 1ins tall and weighs about 14 stone - led many parents to suggest his physique was better

suited to the oval ball game.

He quickly found himself at home in the No 8 position and was chosen for Felpham Community College's team for his year group which he captains.

He also joined Bognor RFC and moved on to Worthing.

His PE teacher, James Ross, suggested his rapid development as a rugby player warranted a place in the Sussex side.

Andrew was picked for his debut which ended in a 27-15 win against Middlesex.

His play earned a special mention from the county's coaches and attracted the attention of Quins.

He also coaches younger players at the college in his own time. "I'm signed up to Harlequins until the end of the season. I'll be continually assessed in the programme," he said.

"I don't get nervous about it. I'm always being watched when I'm playing. It keeps me on my toes and it's a challenge to play for my place."

` Cyclists pedal to the beat for Pudsey CYCLISTS upped their pace to drum 'n' bass music to help Pudsey at a special session in Felpham.

A total of 24 keep fit enthusiasts raised £155 for Children in Need at the fast and furious occasion last Saturday.

Led by Freedom Leisure instructor Sarah Baldwin, they spent 90 minutes pedalling to the beat supplied by DJ Sam Webster.

Sarah said: "We wanted to make it a really high intensity."

One of the cyclists at the Arun Leisure Centre was Laurence Bird.

The 63-year-old former driver for Sammy Community Transport said: "We're probably going to do 20mph for the whole session.

"I'm taking part for the exercise and for the good cause. You can make it as hard as you like. But there's no wind and no potholes either."

He cycles most days on the centre's static cycles or on the roads.

Tom is a champ for all veterans FORMER soldier Tom O'Connor has become a champion for service personnel.

Bognor Regis resident Tom was given the status by the Sussex Armed Forces Network. It follows his success at a day's training hosted by George Chapman, the network's champions training coordinator.

The training was aimed at health services workers and highlighted conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder which can afflict those who have served their country.

Tom said: "I became involved in the training because I run a breakfast club for former members of the armed forces and also a Facebook page which signposts where they need to go if they want help with matters like housing and the Personal Independence Payments.

"We are now getting veterans who have

served in places like Northern Ireland and Afghanistan."

Becoming a champion means his name is given to veterans who need confidential support in areas such as education, homelessness, as a carer, jobs and financial. He has also joined with a pastor to ensure veterans receive an appropriate send-off when they die.

"We want to see an end to veterans being buried in a pauper's grave with no-one at the ceremony," said Tom, of Glamis Street.

"The government is failing many veterans.

The Armed Forces Covenant which David Cameron launched is not being upheld. " Tom hosts his informal breakfast club at the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street at 9am on the last Tuesday monthly thanks to its operator, Age UK. He joined the Army in 1972 when he was aged 17 and served in Northern Ireland.

PREJUDICES were on show as young people took to the streets of Bognor Regis.

The 12 members of the latest National Citizen Service group walked around with sandwich boards with contrasting views on their front and back.

The fronts contained negative character traits and the rears had positive ones to represent the contrast between superficial views of a person and their true self when a stranger takes the time to get to know them.

One of those who took part for most of last Saturday was Chichester resident Kourtnee McCabe, 18.

Her board read 'freak, psycho, chav and wierd' on the front and 'caring and kind, imaginative, brave and determined' on the back.

She said: "Hopefully, this will work and people will be aware that they shouldn't judge someone until you know their full story and know a lot about them."

The young people walked around the High Street, Hotham Park and seafront.

The Project Acceptance scheme was also aimed at raising awareness of mental health problems in young people. Those who took part had 150 information leaflets about the subject to hand out.

The event was the final part of their ten-day autumn NCS voluntary actions aimed at building skills for life and work. It will be followed by a graduation ceremony next month.

Group leader Wilf Hill said: "This group have done well. They have worked as a team for this project."

Business expert gives a lesson in how to fail CELEBRATE failure, students at Felpham Community College were told.

Business expert Roger Mavity told the pupils failing at an activity was no disgrace. The financial PR expert gave an inspirational talk to 60 students in Years 10 and 11 as part of the Speakers 4 Schools initiative.

He focused on the fear of failure and answered questions which gave students an insight into his business career.

Year 10 student Shannon Squires said: "The talk was really inspirational. Mr Mavity was really nice and his life story from school through his career path - was inspirational."

Fellow student Jasmine Butters, of Year 11, said: "He told us that, wherever we start, we can get to where we want to be and believe in ourselves. It was good."

Mr Mavity founded an advertising agency in 1981 and sold it after ten successful years. He became the chief executive of Granada Group's leisure division and headed its takeover of the Forte Group in what is still the biggest hostile takeover in British corporate history.

He went on to have senior roles in the Citigate PR company and the Conran Group. He became a full-time writer and photographer in 2013 and has a bestselling book and exhibitions in Europe's leading cities to his credit.

Felpham college's careers co-ordinator, Gill Woodman, said: "The fear of failure affects most people. He explained how everyone needs to fail in some ways to succeed overall and it should just make you work harder and believe in yourself."

Two young tycoons from the college are hoping to follow in Mr Mavity's footsteps.

Hayley Tomkins and Daisy Ford, both 16, have launched their Pins and Needles business in the Tycoon in Schools 2016 competition headed by Peter Jones CBE. The talented sixth formers are busy designing, producing, marketing and selling a variety of unique clothes and accessories which they have made or upcycledfrom charirty shops.

They are selling their goods through www. pins-and-needles.org and craft fairs around Bognor Regis before the competition's deadline of December 16.

Headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "We are incredibly proud of the entrepreneurial spirit shown by our students in coming up with their business idea for the Tycoons in School competition. Inspiring and educating children about business from an early age is really important to help them develop enterprise skills and confidence to broaden their horizons."

Hayley and Daisy are up against more than 2,000 students across the UK. Spanish pen pals came to life for

Felpham Community College students.

A total of 40 members of the college's modern languages department spent week in Jaen in southern Spain.

Their stay showed them the importance of talking and interacting with friends in an age of e-communication. Year 11 student Megan Kincaid was one of those who went to Spain. She said: "Meeting with the pen pals was my favourite part of the trip. We managed to understand each other and I spoke lots of Spanish."

A crocus for every pupil at Felpham Community College has been planted as part of a campaign to wipe out polio.

Students worked with Bognor Regis Rotary Club to put in the 1,400 bulbs across the campus. Mary and Bob Pavard from the Rotary Club took part in the event as part of Rotarians' work to eradicate the crippling and potentially fatal disease by supplying the vaccine.

Michelle Kelly, an assistant headteacher at Felpham, said: "Felpham students feel strongly about campaigning for change and this was an ideal opportunity to get involved and to raise awareness fo an awful disease that needlessly still affects so many people."

` Carols in the Park CAROLS will soon resound around Hotham Park in Bognor Regis again.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust is staging its annual carol concert on December 4 at the bandstand.

A trust spokesman said: "Starting at 4pm, family fun will include the opportunity to meet Father Christmas in his grotto and receive a gift, seasonal bouncy castle and meet the Pagham Ponies. Carol singing will be led by the Bognor Regis Salvation Army band and the RAFA (381) Choir from 6pm." Song sheets will be available.

Hot food and drink, including mince pies by Bognor Regis firm Turners Pies will be available.

Anyone who goes along is advised to wrap up warm and take a torch.

THOUSANDS of supporters of an A27 northern bypass around Chichester have signed a petition to get the route reinstated - amid warnings of the impact of the alternatives around Bognor Regis.

The number of backers on the e-petition to the government had reached 3,259 a week ago. They need at least 10,000 names to prompt a response.

They are hoping to increase awareness of the result of what they call the inferior southern options and prompt residents across Bognor Regis and the Manhood peninsula to boost the campaign. Sian Taylor has organised the petition at: https:// petition.parliament.uk/petitions/165748 She said: "A northern bypass proposal, popular with residents, has been dropped and voting is only on the inferior southern options. Although the southern options are cheaper than a northern bypass, they will all be unable to cope within a few years and the whole process will begin again.

"The northern bypass was on the table and was hastily withdrawn before any public consultation had taken place and no explanation was forthcoming for its withdrawal.

"The point of the petition is to urge that it be put back on the table since the options left are totally inadequate, will be a huge waste of public money, cause so much disruption, damage and misery and are just not acceptable - none will actually do the job required - and at what cost?"

The northern bypass could be achieved with a road sunk into a cutting with

minimal impact on the surroundings. It would also take 21 months of construction away from the existing road network.

Building any of the six southern routes would involve 41 months of mayhem on the roads. But there would be further problems, said Sian.

"Now consider major roads carried on gantries at roof level through already overcrowded area - the majority of the population lives south of the A27 - taking all those fumes and noise, thundering past secondary schools, primary schools and the Free School.

"Add to that, traffic from the south wishing to travel east will be funnelled along Lagness Road and Vinnetrow Road.

These roads are overloaded already and there is no obvious way of improving or widening them," she said.

"It has been acknowledged that this natural extension of the link road, the B2166 and Vinnetrow Road, will need upgrading to a dual carriageway in the not too distant future. It just doesn't make sense and can't be done.

"There is simply not enough capacity on the B2166 for the extra traffic. Likewise, the mini-roundabout at the junction of the B2145 and the B2166 just could not cope."

Sian added that option - Option 2 by Highways England - would cause the greatest damage to the landscape and to the area's cultural heritage.

The government has set aside £100250m between March 2019-March 2021 for the A27 improvement works.

Students Students helphelp launch launch a sport a sport NEW age kurling has arrived at a Bognor Regis centre.

The Laburnum Centre's first staging of the Paralympic sport was held with support from young sports leaders. The Regis School students led and umpired the event between teams formed from 25-30 of the centre's members.

One of the students, Jay Beacher, 13, said: "We've organised the players into teams, set up the equipment and are refereeing the games to make sure they go smoothly.

"We've held a kurling tournament for primary school children but this is the first time we have done anything like this. It's good fun but it's very competitive."

The sport's launch at the Lyon Street centre last Thursday was thanks to Bognor Regis Lions Club. It donated a ÂŁ300 set of equipment. President Roger Turner joined the town's mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon, at the first tournament.

Both rolled their sleeves up to join in. Mr Turner said: "We were pleased to help out.

Sean O'Connor, the school sport partnership manager at The Regis School, said: "These are Year 9 sports leaders and today is about extending their leadership skills by working with a different age group.

It is part of our community outreach work and the 2016 Paralympics legacy."

Laburnum Centre co-ordinator Paul Catt said: "We wanted to introduce a new sport which anyone could do and new age kurling is a Paralympic sport. It can be played from a wheelchair, standing up using a pole or a ramp to launch the stones.

"We're grateful to the Lions for the equipment."

AN ATTEMPT to restore early opening at the Bognor Regis waste site has been rejected.

The county councillor in charge of the service said he would not sanction a change to bring back the 8am starts at the Arun Business Park site in spite of tailbacks being caused by its new 10am opening and two days a week closure.

Cllr David Barling told the business owners: "I do recognise that Bognor HWRS is in a unique position behind a retail/industrial park and, thereby, has a limited access.

"Having now reviewed the statistics on afternoon usage, which demonstrates that in excess of 3,500 visits are made to the facility between 3-5pm each week, and having received representations from two county council colleagues and also from Bersted Parish Council, I have come to the conclusion that it is not appropriate for me to change this so early after the implementation of the scheme on October 1.

"I know you will be disappointed with this but we will continue to monitor the situation closely."

But he said extra signs and barriers at the site would be quickly installed to try to improve the situation.

County Cllr Francis Oppler said: "It is clear the new arrangements have not worked. I call upon the county council to re-instate the old opening times. At the very least, it should open the site at 8am everyday, which the firms want."

Awards celebrate the best of businesses in the area

Held at the Shoreline Hotel in Butlins, the 19th Arun Business of the Year Awards was attended by over 200 people eager to pay homage to local individuals and companies.

Host of the evening, Arun District Council officer Miriam Nicholls shared her delight in the popularity of the evening, and said: “This is the biggest Business Awards we have had yet.” A record number of entrants provided encouragement about the growing level of interest in the district's businesses, she stated.

The sponsor of the Business in Education Award, the University of Chichester agreed with this. Professor Seamus Higson said: “These awards are all really important for local businesses.

“It is amazing for us to see the impact these local businesses have on our students. It gives them the chance to learn which skills are really important.”

Tor Walmsley who has recently started her own business, Mindful Moments UK, was there last Friday to gain inspiration for her work.

She said: “I’m here to have a look at other small businesses and what they have achieved.

"It’s also really important to build a relationship with other businesses in the community.

"I’m hoping to enter next year.”

The excitement in the room was palpable as the ceremony began. People from businesses

The first award of the night was for New Business of the Year. The owner of the Tonsorial Parlour in Bognor Regis, Ben Yilmaz, displayed the same confidence required to open a new business when collecting the award. He expressed his gratitude for the award.

He said: “It means a lot and shows that the community and other businesses have accepted us. It’s amazing.”

The sense of community mentioned throughout the awards was present all evening as businesses congratulated each other on their successes. This was never more apparent than when the sponsor of the Business Marketing and Promotion Award, NL Autos, happily presented

Kate and Georgia Alston of Pinks Vintage Ice Cream with their award and said: “We are very happy and chuffed for them”.

Former winners, Regis Removals, were honoured again this year at the ceremony.

David Wride from Regis Removals accepted the award for customer care. He explained how he sought this award for years.

He said: “I always wanted to get this on behalf of our staff who work tirelessly for our customers.”

Many employers spoke highly of their workers in the success of their companies.

Sue Pegrum from Enable Me thanked the volunteers of the charity after receiving the Disability Awareness Award. She said: “This is a fantastic credit to volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without them.”

First winner of award which recalls Robert MEMORIES of a much-loved Felpham hotel owner were to the fore when a new award was presented in his honour.

The presentation of the Robert Warham Award for Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

The Beachcroft Hotel in Felpham was the most emotional moment of the night.

The award was created to recognise the achievements of former owner Robert Warham who passed away earlier this year.

Charles Warham, Robert’s son, presented the award and said “Dad would be honoured so by this award.

“He did so much for this community, it’s nice to see it come together like this every year.”

The winner of this heart-felt award was 23-year-old Courtney Walters from Bognor Regis firm Regis Removals. She said: “It means absolutely everything. I didn’t expect it at all!

“I’ve been working with Regis Removals for one year this month. I do so many things there, I deal with office work, social media, finances, accounts and admin.

“I only discovered business through Chichester College. Debbie Ross there inspired me.”

Her triumph was part of a successful night for young people in business all round. Awards for Employee of the Year and Business Person of the Year were

won by Joe Harriss and Jack Keywood respectively from Luv Carpets in Bognor Regis.

Jack spoke of his respect for the sponsor of the award, David Wride.

He said: “This is a great achievement especially coming from David.”

Mr Wride felt that the award could not have gone to a more deserving person.

He said: “It really shows something about a business that both the employee [Joe] and employer [Jack] won awards tonight.

Jack lives for business.”

The ceremony ended with the presentation of the Overall Business of the Year award. Gusto Wines were granted the prestigious award to add to its success in the Website of the Year category.

Simon Wallace, from the company, explained the significance of the evening.

He said: “For me, tonight is so important.

If all the businesses here are doing well then the community is doing well.”

One of his colleagues Claire said: “The drive and passion Simon has is infectious and feeds through the team.”

Arun District Council's deputy chairman, Cllr Jacky Pendleton, summarised the relevance of the awards. She said: “Tonight is important for the economic welfare of our community. These awards act as a pinnacle for what we do well here.”

Loyalty pays off in windfall for school

Trustee matches are successful A UNIQUE speed dating night for charities and potential trustees has been hailed as a success.

Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester held the first event of its kind to match individuals with community groups who are seeking new trustees to help to run them.

Dozens of people attended the occasion at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester this month.

A real buzz filled the air as existing trustees spelled out the duties of the role and organisations, who had been coached in 'selling' their work, networked to chat with them in the hope of finding a match.

Lillian Holdsworth, one of the

Deputy Lieutenants of West Sussex, said: "The buzz, post presentations, indicated just how successful the evening was. Everyone appeared to be animated and I witnessed quite a few pairings."

Her fellow Deputy Lieutenant, Margaret Bamford, described the event as "focussed, brief, appropriate, reassuring and informative - well worth the effort at the end of a long busy day".

The evening was hosted by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Mark Spofforth OBE and is set to be repeated in the Arun district in hope of another success because members of VAAC say they struggle to recruit trustees.

MORE than £500 has been given to a Bognor Regis school for its loyalty.

Southway Primary School received the windfall from YPO - the UK's largest publically owned buying organisation.

It is sharing its profits with its thousands of school customers and Southway's portion has added to up £505.

Head of school Sarah Holland said: "Donations of this are always incredibly welcome and help us to invest further in resources to aid and enrich our pupils' wider school experience."

The school in South Way plans to use its loyalty vouchers to purchase more educational resources.

The loyalty scheme sees a share of YPO's profits throughout 2015/16 given back to its public sector customers based on how much they spend with the group each year.

Simon Hill, YPO's managing director, said: "With budgets at a breaking point, schools are facing the persistent challenge of balancing providing an exceptional education with the pressures of keeping costs low.

"We're delighted to play a part in helping schools that regularly buy equipment and resources from us by offering them a share of our profits through our longstanding loyalty scheme."

Since its start in 2011, the loyalty scheme has given back almost £110m to YPO customers in the public sector.

From traditional Christmas carols that you're all invited to sing-along with to festive hits made famous by films and pop stars over the years, this concert has Christmas music for everyone.

Since their formation in 1986 the band has grown both in size and popularity and currently haas around 50 enthusiastic

members.

Throughout the year the non-profit band performs in several gigs out of pure enjoyment and love for music. As residents of the local community they rely on the continued support of people like you to provide them with an audience for their hard work.

Christmas is always their busiest time of year with several appearances at markets, events and their own concerts.

This concert looks to be as fun and festive as ever with a programme filled with a variety of favourites such as White Christmas, Christmas Festival and Swingin Jingle.

The first weekend of the month sees both Father Christmas visiting the museum (3rd and 4th) and the annual tree dressing event taking place (the 4th).

In his traditional green garb Father Christmas will be seated in his chamber ready to welcome guests. In-keeping with his dress, Father Christmas is bringing along delightful traditional presents to distribute among well-behaved children.

Father Christmas they picture him wearing a red coat trimmed with white. In fact this idea of his dress is only about 140 years old.

Previously he was always portrayed wearing green.

Another forgotten tradition is being held on the Sunday as visitors are asked to take place in the unique tree dressing event.

Bring along a jam jar which will be decorated and turned into a lantern. A procession of the lanterns then begins around the museum while darkness falls. The trees at the centre of the museum are then decorated with the lanterns creating a magical scene unlike any other.

This activity is based on the ancient customs that celebrated the life-giving properties of trees.

Regular admission prices apply for the tree dressing but appointments will need to be made in advance to meet Green Father Christmas.

THIS is the first pantomime of the year to feature on our What's On pages. Oh yes it is!

Peter Pan seems to be a hot choice for pantomimes at the moment as there are a few versions popping up around West Sussex in the coming weeks. However, it is this adaptation that gets the ball rolling and looks to be one of the more lively productions.

Many famous faces are among the cast including Richard 'Dick' McCourt of the infamous Dick and Dom duo on CBBC, and stand-up comedian Patrick Monahan.

AUDIENCES across the country have the chance to watch two professional productions of THe Nutcracker this December.

Both the Royal Ballet and Russian company Bolshoi Ballet’s versions of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet are being shown at cinema screenings across the country, including the Chichester Cinema at New Park.

The first of the two versions, performed by the Royal Ballet, is being filmed a few days before the screening. It marks a celebration of the original production's choreographer Peter Wright's 90th birthday.

In contrast, the screening of the Bolshoi Ballet company's THe Nutcracker is live, promising that the two versions will be quite different.

THe Nutcracker score is undeniably one of Tchaikovsky's most accessible and famous work. Audiences everywhere recognise the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Waltz of the Flowers and Dance of the Reed Flutes among many other pieces from the ballet.

A story rooted in Christmas that enters the realms of dreams, THe Nutcracker has always been a magical tale that has captured the hearts of audiences.

I never thought I would be relaxed about a train delay, but if I was not in a big hurry, I’d be very pleased to have an excuse to eat at the Foundry, situated conveniently adjacent to Chichester Railway Station. The Restaurant has ample parking too, and I was able to park conveniently right outside ready to try their lunch time menu.

The Foundry has been extensively renovated and refurbished thanks to the new owners, John and Gemma Whelen, and an amazing job they have done of it too.

The décor is outstanding and has clearly been designed by a professional designer, offering muted teals, augmented with black and white, and a harmonious mixture of woodwork and flooring , stylish colourful lighting, and interesting features such as an old gramophone and even a wall decorated entirely with one pence pieces- a real conversation point.

The result comes together beautifully to create an charmingly eye catching venue, comprising a large bar area, dining area, seating areas, and even a small raised stage, where I was told they have occasional live music at the weekends and a late licence to

enable diners to enjoy a relaxed evening out without being rushed.

I took my seat in the airy and light dining area, and was greeted and served by Sean the manager, who was extremely helpful and friendly. He is clearly very proud of The Foundry and all it has to offer, and rightly so. Families, friends, couples, and even lone females would be right at home there, in the chilled and relaxed atmosphere, with familiar background music and sport on the large screen TV in the bar area, making it appealing to a wide range of customers.

Sean brought me over the regular menu and advised that they also boast a special menu, which changes daily and is written up on the blackboard; all food is sourced locally, their fish always fresh- never frozen, and they use local vegetables and meat, even the coffee, he said, is supplied by a local firm who import directly. They are happy to offer sandwiches and snacks to those waiting for trains or embarking on a journey too.

After some deliberation, the thought of having freshly caught fish fillet, handbattered in a beer batter, tempted me into ordering that great British classic. I did not have to

wait very long for it to arrive- a spectacularly large piece of golden battered fish lightly garnished with parsley, and served with sweet green peas and a pot of creamy piquant tartar sauce on the side. An exceptionally delicate light crispy batter, concealing moist, thick flakes of pristine fresh white fish, on a heap of hot golden chips rivalling any seaside fish and chip shop. I enjoyed every flavoursome mouthful; you can’t beat a really good fish and chips and this was, without doubt , one of the best I have ever had.

Being a person with little will power, my determination to resist dessert was soon overturned when I examined the menu again, and spotted the chocolate brownie. A good sized square of luscious brown chocolate criss crossed with a deep chocolaty sauce, and topped off with a big ball of glossy white ice cream was soon bought my way. The heavenly warm crunchy nutty outer shell, with gooey middle- the perfect brownie,

complimented by creamy cold vanilla ice cream was simply delicious.

I rounded my lunch off with a creamy frothy latte, with a big rich roasted flavour, before having a last chat with the exceptionally friendly staff, and taking a quick look round.

It was a wet and windy day, but I ventured out to see the garden, and this will certainly be a big attraction in summer, with plenty of seating, lights, and canopies.

The Foundry has transformed itself under the new ownership and moved far away from the traditional pub of yesteryear, it is now a bright, clean, stylish and welcoming establishment, with something for everyone, and a very reasonably priced menu with all the favourite Classics including burgers, pasta, and Sunday Roasts. They can offer group bookings and Christmas Parties as well as lunches, snacks on the go, evening dinners or anything in between. I will definitely be eating there again.

WHEN the going gets tough, the tough get going and when the weather gets rough, yours truly gets going - basically to Devon in search of the fruits of Bacchus!

In the past you would head to Axminster in pursuit of quality carpets, but nowadays a trip to Miller's Farm Shop is de rigueur, if you seek to stock up for the festive period. I noticed that stocks remained of the Jacques Bardelot Champagne, a veritable bargain at a mere £12.99 with its complexity , clean citrus and apple flavours and a light toastiness to boot!

I next perceived a Famille Perrin Côtes Du Rhône Réserve 2015 for under ten pounds and, mindful of the prestigious reputation of these pioneering organic wine growers, noted its elegance and cleanliness on the palate and a wine worth trying for a different sort of white wine experience.

Malcolm Miller specialises in red wine, principally from across the Channel, and I readily took up his recommendation of a 2011 Château Lalande - Borie Saint

- Julien which regaled my taste buds - a beautifully balanced wine with a cigar-box nose and essence of red fruits, leather and vanilla to tease the palate priced at under twenty pounds.

At just under ten pounds a Château Bonnat 2013 Graves intrigued me and proved to be mellow and soft on the palate, of a dark ruby red colour

METHOD 1. Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and cinnamon and pour into the bowl of a food processor. Add the butter and blend until the mix looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar.

2. Lightly beat the egg and golden syrup together, add to the food processor and pulse until the mixture clumps together.

Tip the dough out, knead briefly until smooth, wrap in clingfim and leave to chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.

3. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line two baking trays with

greaseproof paper.

4. Roll the dough out to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness on a lightly floured surface.

Using cutters, cut out the gingerbread men shapes and place on the baking tray, leaving a gap between them. For decorations, use a skewer to make a small hole in the top of each biscuit.

5. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly goldenbrown. Leave on the tray for 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling. When cooled decorate with the writing icing and cake decorations.

Listen to the important messages of Movember OK, so it’s nearly the end of November and we are seeing a lot of overgrown beards and moustaches about. Personally I am a bit partial to a man with hair! Ha! Ha! But joking aside I like the fact that men can let it all grow and not worry about shaving for the whole month of November.

So where did Movember originally come from?

Apparently the word ‘Mo’ is Australian slang for moustache.

The idea for Movember was born in 2003 when Travis Garone and his mate Luke Slattery got together to have a couple of beers.

After a few pints eventually their conversation turned randomly to the vanishing of the 1970’s moustache!

They wondered if they could bring it back into fashion.

One thought led to another and the two friends realised that there are almost no campaigns to create awareness regarding men’s health.

They found inspiration from the women around them who took an active part in raising funds and spreading awareness about breast cancer and other women’s health issues.

This led them to combine the idea of bringing the moustache back to creating awareness about men’s health, prostate cancer in particular, as they considered it to be the male equivalent of breast cancer.

Sadly throughout the world, a large number of young men are victims of prostate cancer. With this in mind they decided to take some serious steps to change the scenario of men’s health, “one moustache at a time”.

Now the Movember Foundation works on the motto: “Our fathers, partners, brothers, and friends face a health crisis that isn’t being talked about.

"Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.”

In the years that followed the Movember community has continued to grow at an extraordinary pace. They are now officially active in 21 countries.

Since its initiation in 2003, the Movember Foundation has come a long way, tackling men’s health problems on a global scale focusing on these core issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

The three fundamentals of Movember are: 1. Awareness and education 2. Survivor supports program 3. Research I have two very close friends at the moment undergoing treatment for cancer. One has just been diagnosed with throat cancer and the other prostate, and they both have only just turned 50.

Often, symptoms of younger men are overlooked because they are ‘too young’ to have such disease.

Unfortunately this is not a true statement, but luckily through the media, charities, and men opening up more about their own health issues, diagnosis is becoming earlier and the survival rates are higher.

If you feel like you have any health issues and have been avoiding discussing it with anyone, make today the day you make that call. It may not be anything as bad as you

think, but it's better to be safer than sorry.

So Lovely staged its latest Christmas market at Mosse Memorial Hall for the first time.

And the result was a resounding triumph to the delight of the salon's owner, Romaine Arter.

She said: "There must have been 200 people who went along. By the end of the evening, the hall was heaving because the footfall was so high.

"It really paid off holding the market in the hall.

The salon would not have been anywhere near big enough.

"It was hard work organising the night but I was very pleased at the end of it."

The market raised £541.45 for the RNLI. This is thought to be second highest amount since Romaine started holding the events six years ago.

She intends to hand over the money by the end of next week.

A total of 25 stallholders ensured those who went along last Friday had plenty of scope for finding

presents and treats for friends and relatives as well as themselves.

Among those who tempted visitors to splash their cash were Scentsy, Stella and Dot, Luv Sweeties, Oops a Daisy and Chic Boutique.

"We'll certainly being staging the market again next year," said Romaine. "It will be raising money for another charity."

THIS week we have to talk about the big Bognor Regis fire.

Fourteen fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze, which affected a row of buildings on The Esplanade, in the early hours of Sunday, November 20. About 30 residents were evacuated from flats close to the fire when crews were called just before 4am as crews faced 'difficult storm conditions', the fire service said.

The properties were derelict and the buildings were completely destroyed, and recently demolished for safety reasons. Fifty firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze at its height. Lead officer Adrian Murphy said: "This incident has taken place in the midst of a major storm and it was difficult to stand when we arrived on the seafront. Our key priority now is to work with the displaced residents to get them safely home as soon as possible."

So almost within an hour Facebook pictures began to appear, and then sadly the derogatory comments also began to appear. I don’t know about you but I have this crazy love/hate relationship with social media. The power of it raises unbelievable amounts of funding, champions great causes, helps find missing people and pets, highlights community issues and provides a way of engaging people in their community, and is a form of consultation but it also has a dark side.

Within hours of the fire despite people being made homeless, be it temporarily - the loss of property, the awesome fire brigade and police officers battling against high winds to keep us safe, various unsavoury comments and even a poem began to surface. Now I don’t know about you – but why would you choose the first 48 hours to moan about various matters about the property? Respect?

I’ll be honest: when I’m around someone who is chronically whining, complaining, bitching and moaning it’s as difficult for me as it is for anyone else. The energy of those dynamics is one of powerlessness. If we’re not conscious of it, we take on the energy of those dynamics when other people display them.

So, on Facebook, for example, often a comeback if you say ‘stop moaning’ – they say ‘stop reading’ which I guess if they were in front of you , you would walk away! So we should do the same on social media?.

But, at the same time, I strive to understand why these things come up for people. Every time I see someone post negative stuff on Facebook or social media, it intensifies the pressure for me to make sure that whatever I put on to social media is happyhappy-joy-joy to make my point …Do you now what I mean?

Which I guess that is what the whiners, complainers, bitches and moaners are doing, making their point - but in their own unique way!

GARDENERS from the Aldingbourne Trust are celebrating an award for their skills.

They have been recognised for their work in maintaining the planters and hanging baskets at Horsham railway station.

The Denne Neighbourhood Council Cup 206 was presented by Horsham in Bloom to the station in partnership with the trust's Adopt a Station programme.

Horsham station manager Shah Uddin said: "Adopt a Station make a huge

Her recital will take place at 7pm tomorrow at 2 Sudley Road.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "Alison comes with impeccable credentials and is sponsored by the Countess of Munster Trust, which has very high entry standards. To encourage students to hear a professional singer at the start of their career, we are offering free entry to all singing students under the age of 25."

Alison appeared in the BBC Last Night of the Proms in September singing Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music. Her other career highlights include solo recitals at the Oxford Lieder Festival, King's Place and the Royal Opera House Crush Room.

Alison is the winner of the 2015 Naggie Teyte Prize and recently completed her studies on the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

She is a National Opera Studio young artist for the 2015/16 season where she is sponsored by the Glydebourne new generation programme. Her operatic roles have included Frasquita in Carmen, Gloriana with Martyn Brabbins and Rosaura in The Adventures of Pinocchio.

She has taken part in a performance of contemporary opera scenes at Sadler's Wells with acclaimed director Graham Vick.

Recently featured as a 'new face' in the Telegraph, James Cheung has worked with some of the most exciting artists today.

His performances include a recital tour with Christian Gerhaher, Winterreise with Ian Bostridge and piano duets with Gerold Huber. Entry at the door is £9 members and £11 visitors.

INTERNATIONAL guitarist and pedagogue Edoardo Catemario is returning to the West Sussex Guitar Club tomorrow.

Catemario will be appearing at 7.30pm at the Recital Hall in Sudley Road. He was born in Naples and started his music career aged five and gave his first recital at 11.

An extremely versatile guitarist, he passes with ease from the romantic repertoire, played on original instruments, to the baroque, to 20th century music, contemporary music and vanguards.

His repertoire includes a vast amount of solo works, besides almost all the chamber repertoire and 42 concertos for guitar and orchestra.

He has won several national and international competitions.

He took first place in the prestigious 1991 Andres Segovia guitar competition in Granada, Spain, and in the Alessandria International Competition in 1992.

As a guest soloist, he is frequently invited by various orchestras and has collaborated with many of the world's chamber musicians. Catemario has recorded for Decca, ARTS Music and Kock Schwann labels.

As a teacher, Catemario has held master classes in Europe and the United States. He has taught at the Accademia Musicale di Firenze since 2006.

He is also a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and taught in the sommer akademie of the Salzburg Mozarteum from 2001-07. He owns and plays on his collection of old instruments which date from 1890-1935.

Her Royal Highnesses Princess Mary and Princess Louise accompanied Queen Mary where they purchased a number of articles for a doll’s house.

One of the early advertisements for Toyland stated that they were ‘one of the smartest toyshops in the provinces’ - some accolade. In 1938 the shop was taken over

by Margaret Hunt and her sister and they retained it for 35 years eventually selling the business to Michael Harvey.

Sadly, the 75th anniversary of the Toyland shop in the Arcade was celebrated with the closing of the store on December 16,1977.

Apparently the shop could no longer compete with the much larger cut-price stores and increased rents prevented it from being a profit-making establishment, also with the change in seafront developments, the summer trade had changed. The Arcade used to be a thoroughfare to the seafront, and some traders claimed it had become more of a dead-end, not leading shoppers through its shops.

Each Christmas, the Arcade was decorated and would have created great excitement amongst the children. Around 1910 there was a Commissionaire named Mr Randall who became Father Christmas, providing a bran tub of excitement for children at 6d a

Town's toy shops brought childhood alive the business moved to Waterloo Square in the 1840s when Miss Augusta Binstead and her sister were operating it.

One of Gerard Young’s articles reported that ‘Bognor men remember Burgess's Bognor Bazaar as a wonderland of childhood; the place where you saw the first marvels of Meccano, Hornby train and the Atalanta kite.’

This was also the shop that sold souvenirs including those little pieces of crested china. They also published postcards and books of photographs of the area.

By the late 1860s a Henry Townsend ran the business but most people will remember the site best when it became known as the Burgess’s Bazaar, when James Reeve Burgess took over the business in the late 1870s.

In 1929 Queen Mary reputedly paid three visits to the shop while she stayed f An advert to tempt any child at Craigweil House. It is reported that she bought a bucket and spade for her CHILDREN living in Bognor Regis have granddaughter – today’s Queen.

There is also another report that during always been very lucky to have a good toy shop in the town, especially at this time of the Second World War, when a German the year when they are very popular. It had an excellent turnout with 84 players taking part, slightly down on last year, but great when you consider that there are fewer teams in the league this year.

Division 3 saw 14 pairs take to the oche with Dave Juniper & Steve Jenkins (QEII) and Ian Dendy & Bob Twaites (POW Galleon) making it to the final.

Dendy won the bullseye for the first throw, but neither team scored well.

Eventually Jenkins hit a large score, followed by a ton from Juniper, but they missed on their doubles allowing Dendy & Twaites to catch up and hit the double for the first leg.

The second leg saw some better scoring from both teams, but two large scores from Dendy & Twaites saw them leave the double first. With two darts from Twaites, the double was hit, giving himself and Dendy the title of Division 3 Pairs Champions 2016/17.

Division 2 saw 12 pairs step up with Adam Hall & Alex Richardson (Aldingbourne Mavericks) and last year's finalists Rob Rice & John Luff (Chi Snooker 'A') competing for the trophy.

sport@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER are all fired up and ready to go for this week's derby clash with Fareham after two later Martin Gough strikes helped them to a 3-3 draw away at the University of Bristol.

The match was a feisty affair with five yellow cards being dished out between the two teams.

Chi looked as though they would be making the long journey back with nothing.

But Gough struck with ten minutes to go and again in the last minute to secure a draw for Mark Pacey's side.

The point lifts them off the bottom of the conference west

table and sets up Sunday's clash at Kingsham against neighbours Fareham nicely (2pm).

Elsewhere and Chichester Priory Ladies continued their good form with a 5-1 win over Wooton under Edge in the national vase competition.

Their next match is in the Sussex Ladies League against South Saxons tomorrow at Kingsham (12.15pm).

Lee Franklin & Wayne Wadsworth.

Despite playing well through the night, Franklin & Wadsworth struggled in the final. Rowland hit a ton & 85, and the double 8 with his first dart, taking the first leg in 16 darts. The second leg saw Collins hit 100 & 125 at the start. With 161 left he just missed the treble 17 and could only leave double 12 for Rowland.

Rowland just missed the double, leaving Collins with 6, but that was no problem.

Collins took 3 darts, but he hit the double on his next throw, for a 21 dart leg and the title of Division 1 Pairs Champions 2016/17 for himself and Rowland.

Lions chief: "We must move on" "WE must move on" - that is the message from Pagham chairman Tony Shea after his side suffered a last minute defeat to Eastbourne Town.

Two goals from Kieron Pamment - his 13th in eight games - looked to have given the Lions all three points last Saturday.

But an equaliser from Evan Archibald with ten minutes to go and then a winner from Adebola Sotoyinbo seven minutes into injury time ensured a first defeat in 14 matches for Mark Bennett's side.

The Lions now sit five points behind Shoreham in the SCFL Premier with the Musselmen set to visit Nyetimber Lane on December 3.

Before that though is a trip to AFC Uckfield Town tomorrow (3pm).

The omens are good for Pagham, with the hosts having only one win in 14 matches in all competitions.

Shea though warned against complacency.

Sids' bright idea for floodlight restoration Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk SIDLESHAM FC's new committee hope the restoration of the club's floodlights will lead to a bright future for everyone involved.

The club has suffered dearly since the current system caught fire and burned out a - with the first team being relegated as the ground did not meet regulations.

With the Sids sitting second in the league and a new committee in place, an appeal has now been launched to find £11,000 to get the pylons back working at the Recreation Ground If successful, not only will it allow the first team to play at a higher level, but it will ensure the reserves, youth teams and Chichester women's development side can prosper - with a training pitch being usable midweek alongside the main enclosed ground.

Club chairman Daren Pearce told the Post: "We are trying to push on as a club in lots of ways and it will be a shame not to get promoted because of the floodlights.

"It's a big ask because of the money involved."

Donations from as little as £2 are being accepted towards the fund. Local businesses can also

get involved with sponsorship packaged ranging from £25 to £1,500.

On the pitch the club is making real progress, sitting second in the SCFL division two.

A 4-0 win against in-form Westfield at the Recreation Ground on Saturday took the Sids unbeaten run to 15.

A brace from Tom Bayley, alongside strikes from Thomas Jefkins and Callum Dowdell wrapped up the home victory.

Next up is a trip to Worthing Town Leisure in the league tomorrow (2pm).

The only player missing is Joe Leggett who is still suspended.

Pearce, who is also first team manager, said: "We've already played them at home when we weren't at our best so we will be looking to put that right on Saturday.

Pearce added: "They have done well to be fair. It's not down to anyone else other than them that we are where we are.

"They are putting in the effort in training and on match days."

Chi face 'must-win' match CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford can't wait for his side to get back into action after two of the best performances of the season were backed up by one of the worst.

Rutherford said: "I'm not going to go overboard about getting beat. We played really well on Saturday and perhaps playing a team in a lower league they thought they just needed to turn up and win.

"All 11 players were poor on the night and we won't win games if that happens.

"We just need to take positives out of the season so far. We are doing well on limited finances and there's no point being negative."

A tough trip to Conference South Eastbourne Borough comes on Tuesday in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup. Before then Chi host a struggling Hailsham Town side who sit bottom of the SCFL Premier (tomorrow, 3pm).

Bognor continue to perform against the odds, with a 3-1 win away at Leatherhead on Saturday taking them to the top of the Ryman Premier.

After no home game for three weeks, the Rocks return to Nyewood Lane this week for a double header - with Hendon tomorrow (3pm) and Kingstonian on Tuesday (7.45pm).

While both are sitting mid-table, the form book shows they save their best performances for on the road - something Howell is well aware of.

Speaking to THe Post, he said: "THey will not be easy games. I know a little about both sides so we wil need to be at our best to get something from the matches.

"We're at home which is good and I just hope we can continue doing what we have

been doing."

THe double header comes after a battling 3-1 away win in Surrey.

An early strike from Jimmy Muitt put the Rocks on course for three points until the visitors fougt back in the second period.

But two late goals - the first a well taken effort from Alex Parson and then a scruffy goal for Ollie Pearce - sealed the victory, taking Howell's side to the top of the Ryman Premier.

A midweek win for Havant and Waterlooville at Worthing has since pushed Bognor into second. But regardless of the league position Howell is pleased with how things are going.

He said: "We were not at our best against Leatherhead, it was probably one of our poorest performances of the season.

"After their equaliser I thought we would be lucky to hang on to a point. But the lads dug deep."

He added: "I'm just delighted where we are at the moment. Can we stay where we are? I'm not sure, I'm just really happy with the way things are going."

Lions bag the Albion in Sussex Senior Cup PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea has said the club will not be phased after being drawn against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Sussex Senior Cup. The SCFL Premier side roared into the third round after beating higher league opponents East Grinstead in the second round.

The reward for their efforts is a trip to play the development squad of the side currently second in the Championship.

Speaking to The Post, Shea said: "It will be a nice occasion for us all. Obviously I would have liked it to be further on in the competition but we will take it now.

"I'm sure it will be a good game and a good night for all."

ROCKS forward Jimmy Muitt has been hailed as a difference maker - whether as a starting striker or a super sub.

THe former Brighton youngster first came to the attention of the Bognor faithful when he scored twice against them in the 2014 final of the Sussex Senior Cup. Since then, the 21-year-old has been plagued by injuries - and only signed on at Nyewood Lane this summer after being released by Lewes.

Most of his 12 appearances so far this season have come from the subs bench.

But a rare start on Saturday at Leatherhead saw Muitt bag the opener in a 3-1 win.

Bognor boss Jamie Howell said: "I thought Jimmy was excellent on Saturday.

"It's been a difficult few years for him. When we brought him to the club we knew that he was someone that had a lot of potential so we

did not want to rush him back from a bad knee injury.

"I just think now he is starting to get that confidence back.

"He's doing very very well."

Muitt's return is welcomed with the Rocks' small squad being stretched by injuries.

Fellow striker Jimmy Wild was injured last week during a training incident with Darren Budd, meaning he's out for three to six weeks.

Howell's concerns are elsewhere on the pitch.

Midfielders Harvey Whyte and Dan Beck are out of the double header against Hendon and Kingstonian.

While at the back, Howell is without a first choice centre half.

Selsey have played Langney four times already this season, winning one, drawing twice and losing out in another.

In the West Sussex Premier, Nyetimber Pirates face a trip to Horsham to play Holbrook.

THe Pirates are top of the league but did not play last week as TD Shipley were unable to raise a side.

In the same division Predators host Petworth while Hunston will have to travel to Henfield.
