Pic could save young boy's life by Fiona Callingham news@sussexpost.co.uk A SNAPSHOT could be a lifesaver for a young Felpham boy. Jaxson Scrivens, aged 14 months, is undergoing chemotherapy after his parents noticed the pupil of his right eye looked white in a photograph. Emily Smith and Owen Scrivens checked several other photos before they
took Jaxson to their GP. THis led to an appointment at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, where an eye specialist told them Jaxson could possibly have cancer. THis was confirmed as retinoblastoma after an eye examination at the Royal London Hospital. Owen and Emily, of Poulner Close, explained the impact this diagnosis had on them as parents.
Owen said: “When we found out the diagnosis it was devastating. "You think the worst when the doctor tells you your son has cancer.” Emily said: "I just cried my eyes out and couldn't say anything. "It was such a massive shock. You never expect it to happen to you." THe couple are hoping to use their traumatic experience to raise awareness of retinoblastoma.
THey are relieved they noticed the problem when they did. Owen, 20, a paramedical science student, said: "We were lucky that we caught it so soon." Healthcare worker Emily, 21, said: "We don't want anyone else to be in the same position as us.
