Pic could save young boy's life

Jaxson Scrivens, aged 14 months, is undergoing chemotherapy after his parents noticed the pupil of his right eye looked white in a photograph.

Emily Smith and Owen Scrivens checked several other photos before they

took Jaxson to their GP. THis led to an appointment at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, where an eye specialist told them Jaxson could possibly have cancer.

THis was confirmed as retinoblastoma after an eye examination at the Royal London Hospital.

Owen and Emily, of Poulner Close, explained the impact this diagnosis had on them as parents.

Owen said: “When we found out the diagnosis it was devastating.

"You think the worst when the doctor tells you your son has cancer.”

Emily said: "I just cried my eyes out and couldn't say anything.

"It was such a massive shock. You never expect it to happen to you."

THe couple are hoping to use their traumatic experience to raise awareness of retinoblastoma.

THey are relieved they noticed the problem when they did.

Owen, 20, a paramedical science student, said: "We were lucky that we caught it so soon."

Healthcare worker Emily, 21, said: "We don't want anyone else to be in the same position as us.

Gardens plan is welcomed

UNANIMOUS backing has been given to the idea of creating a green wonderland on Bognor Regis seafront.

Councillors from the four political groups present united to support the concept of winter gardens and a bigger theatre on the site of the Regis Centre.

THe agreement at Arun District Council on Wednesday contrasted with the divisions which have greeted previous attempts at regenerating the site over the past two decades.

But objections were raised by some Bognor Regis councillors to the prospect of the town hall becoming an hotel as part of the £50m-plus redevelopment.

THe overall backing for the 11 recommendations put forward by the Bognor Regis regeneration subcommittee of Arun gives the council's officers approval to make progress with the far-reaching plans. THe thoughts also include a boulevard-style park from north to south through the Sunken Gardens and Hothamton car park.

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said: “I am very, very excited about this. It is a brilliant scheme for Bognor Regis. Some of us have that vision to make the town a better place for everybody who lives there and everybody who wants to visit there.”

THe favoured proposals will create a 3,000sq m winter gardens, with room for temporary exhibitions amid the botanical displays, and which contains an Alexandra THeatre of some 450 seats.

Also included are 51 flats, cafes, a

75-bedroom hotel and a Brewer's Fayre pub and a public art feature like a spire.

THe section of THe Esplanade in front of the site could have traffic restrictions so walkers can reach the beach more easily.

For Hothamton, off Queensway, the park of some 3,000sq m could contain a play area, an outdoor gym and retail pavilions. THere will also be two buildings with flats and shops in a £2.5m project.

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham ) said: “It's good news the council has some sort of masterplan for these two sites in Bognor Regis. Over many years, there has been lots of uncertainty in terms of the regeneration of the town.

“What we have got now is a clear blueprint to make a start. I hope going forward the council will continue to liasion with those groups who have come forward with ideas and involve them in the scheme and, hopefully, we can deliver something which is viable and which the community wants.”

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said: “I cautiously welcome these ideas.

THe guiding thing for me is that the residents of Bognor Regis are desperate for something to happen but it has to be the right something.”

Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E) said: “THese are just concepts at the moment. THe designs and ideas take into account all the views of the community groups who have taken part in the consultation. Hopefully, we will continue the dialogue with them.”

Call for Arun to invest £15m in town's regeneration plans A DEMAND has been made for £15m to be invested in the regeneration plans for Bognor Regis by Arun District Council.

Town councillor Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said the investment would match the sum Arun was putting in to the new Littlehampton Sports and Swimming Centre.

It was the only way in which the proposed new and expanded Alexandra THeatre to be built as part of a winter gardens attraction would be funded, he claimed.

He said: "Who is going to pay for that theatre? It will not come from the

developers. It will have to come from charities and trusts. THis is a massive pup we are being sold."

Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said the latest ideas for the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites were artists' impressions which were at an early stage.

"THese are an early indication of what Arun would like to do. THey are not done, not set in stone and not something they have developed.

"THey will go to the market once they have put together the proposals they have just released. It is a case of waiting for those tender documents."

Family hopeful for young Jaxson's road to recovery From page one Any whiteness in their eyes.”

Retinoblastoma is a rare form of cancer most commonly found in young children. It develops in the cells of the retina which causes the white colouring seen in Jaxson's eye.

Even their GP was surprised to have a patient with the condition and Jaxson was her first in 16 years.

His diagnosis late last December was accompanied by the potentially devastating news from his consultant that his condition was almost too far advanced to be treated. On a scale of A - E, Jaxson's illness was graded a D, which was only one grade away from the most severe.

His treatment began soon after his diagnosis with chemotherapy on December 30 at Southampton General Hospital.

THe journey to recovery has been arduous for the young family. Emily spoke of how she felt taking Jaxson for his appointments. She said: "Whenever they took his blood, it was horrible.

"I just had to hold him and wait for it to be over."

THe after-effects of the chemotherapy have also proved difficult, and it usually takes Jaxson five days to recover.

He is halfway through his chemotherapy with three sessions remaining. Already in that time the tumour behind his eye has decreased in size, something doctors are highly positive about.

Owen said: "We're getting quite hopeful now, having seen how much smaller the tumour has become.”

Emily said: "Now we are just looking forward to him being cancer-free."

His parents said they were grateful for the support they had received from the hospital, charities and their friends and family, which has helped to improve their situation.

THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust, in particular, has been an enormous help with Jaxson's recovery. Owen said: "THe team at Snowdrop have been incredible.

"THe nurses there have gone above and beyond for Jaxson."

To thank the trust, Emily and Owen have set up a fundraising website for it as well as the Piam Brown ward at Southampton General for cancer patients under 16. THis site has already raised over £1,000 in donations from generous supporters.

More homes are set to be backed AT LEAST 4,000 homes for the western side of Bognor Regis were set to move closer to being built.

THe massive expansion of the urban area was due to be included last night in the latest version of Arun District Council's local plan land use blueprint.

THe commitment to set aside land in south and north Pagham and west of North Bersted for development was due to gain the backing of its local plan sub-committee last night.

THat decision will go to a full meeting of the council on March 22 to be ratified ready for a government inspector to scrutinise the document against the government's house-building targets and planning policies.

Current planning applications for 950 homes in Pagham have produced well over a thousand objections from residents, pictured above at a letter writing session earlier this year.

In addition, previously shelved plans for 2,500 homes north of nearby Chalcraft Lane have been revived and been unanimously opposed by Bersted parish councillors.

Lower Bognor Road resident Colin Hamilton said in a letter to the Post: "THese have been received by the population of this far corner of Arun District Council with incredulity, anger and deep dismay. You can be assured that they will be fought tooth and nail."

Neil Crowther, the council's head of planning policy and strategic development, says in a report to the sub-committee the current version of the plan included suggestions made by the inspector last February when he suspended its examination because he was concerned it failed to meet the requirements of the government.

"THe most significant modifications required to the plan relate to the need for a substantial uplift to the housing requirements for the district," he states.

For Pagham south and north, this will see at least 1,200 homes expected to be built before the plan expires in 2031.

"Both sites consist of a number of parcels of land. It is imperative that individual areas are aligned with neighbouring parcels of land.

Arun is likely to have to build 919 homes a year - or 18,380 in all throughout the plan's existence.

A further 3,000 properties are expected to go in the Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate area. THis will include a new A29 flyover east of the Woodgate level crossing.

Fontwell and Yapton will be expected to accommodate 400 homes each and Ford at least 1,500.

Affordable housing is to be included.

"Affordability is a major issue in Arun due to the relationship between house prices and incomes," says Mr Crowther.

` Armed forces day returns to the town A TRIBUTE to the armed forces is being staged in Bognor Regis after a year's absence.

THe latest Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day will take place on June 18 in the Waterloo Square/pier area with a host of free activities.

Sue Holmes is one of the organisers who have come together to put on the occasion after it was unable to be staged last year.

She said: "THose involved will include young people from local cadet groups, serving personnel and veterans.

"Organisations who support them and ex-service personnel will be represented and displays will give an insight into some of the conflicts that have involved our armed services, including Aden, the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan."

THe day will formally begin at 10am with a drumhead service followed by the presentation of veterans' badges and medals. A re-dedication of the pier's HMS St Barbara memorial to recall its Second World War role will also take place.

A road closure on THe Esplanade, from West Street to Waterloo Square east, will allow for exhibitions, displays and entertainment.

Protests about store booze bid STRONG objections have been raised by councillors to plans by Tesco to continuously sell booze at its main Bognor Regis store.

THe retail giant wants to enable its customers to buy alcohol every hour of the week. But town council members said the extra time could encourage crime by enabling people to drink alcohol around the clock all year.

THe council's planning and licensing committee decided on Tuesday to object to the plan because they feared it could lead to increased public disorder, a potential failure to protect young children and the company's lack of information about any increased security presence at the store.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said: “I am against this. We don't want any alcohol sold before 8am. We have managed to negotiate that with every single store in the town.

"It would be totally unfair to them if Tesco received this approval and it would set a precedent we don't want.”

Tesco has applied to Arun District Council to vary its premises licence for the Shripney Road store. THe company wants Arun to remove the restriction which bans alcohol sales from midnight6am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays every month except December.

It also wants the ability to sell alcohol around the clock on a Sunday – to make beers, wines and spirits available every hour of every day – though trading laws restrict the store's opening to 10am-4pm on Sundays.

THe present premises licence dates from

December, 2015. THis allows for 24 hour alcohol sales Mondays to THursdays, as well as six days a week in December.

Tesco applied for the removal of the ban in February, 2011, but withdrew its application before Arun made a decision.

THe deadline for comments about the current application is next Tuesday.

And the town councillors made it clear they were uneasy about the prospect of increasing the availability of alcohol.

Cllr Kenton Batley (LD, Orchard) said: “THe crime rate could go up with this, with people under the influence of alcohol and people drink-driving.

“I believe the police are making a representation about this on the possibility of extra crime.

“THere could be people sitting outside the store drinking as well as walking down the road drinking.

“THere are no tills open either. THe only ones in operation are the selfservice ones. I am concerned about the possibility of theft and the need for the police to get to the store if there are any problems on the resources they have got.”

In a statement with the premises licence, Tesco says: "All the measures that we currently have in place during licensed hours would continue to be in place during any additional hours that alcohol would be sold in the store.

"Tesco Stores Ltd will at all times maintain adequate levels of staffing with such staff and security levels being disclosed to either the police or licensing authority upon request and that all staff will receive licensing law training before they are permitted to sell alcohol..."

Bowie mural is a hit as hotelier brightens up building and town POP ART has come to a Bognor Regis hotel.

Owner Shane Glasspool has brightened up a side wall of THe Pier Hotel with a giant mural of David Bowie.

THe two eye-catching depictions, which measure a total of 6m x 3m, show the late singer in his Ziggy Stardust persona.

Shane has several more murals lined up even though Arun District Council officers are visiting him next Tuesday for a 'general inspection of the site' to ensure no planning rules have been broken.

"Bowie was amazing and the artist, Chloe Dowsett, wanted to do a picture of him and I thought it was a great idea.

"If I have to put in a retrospective

planning application for the mural, I'll do that," said Shane. "I've more murals planned for the front of the hotel as well.

"I'm likely have George Michael, Amy Winehouse and Madonna painted."

Chloe used her skills to create the Bowie portraits along the hotel's Manor Place wall. THey have attracted 650 likes on social media and more than 100 shares.

Shane took over the prominent building, which fronts Waterloo Square's western side, last August. As well as brightening up its facade, he is busy improving the premises' 12 bedrooms.

"Business is going very well. We are packed out for our live music nights every Friday, Saturday and Sunday."

Red tape attacked by mum of inspirational teenager

HEALTH service red tape has been criticised by the Barnham mother of a teenager with a brain tumour.

Jan Ellis said she had spent seven years struggling to ensure her son, Tyler Murphy, received the help and support he needed.

Tyler, 19, has been battling a brain tumour and used his illness as inspiration to set up the Tyler's Trust charity to provide gift boxes for children in hospital. But Jan said: "I spend my life fighting to get him some chance of an independent life because he has fought so hard for one.

"We have been passed from pillar to post and, as a teen who has gone from children's to adult services, fallen through every gap in provision that there is.

"All this was being dealt with when we found that Tyler's tumour had grown and the op that they always said was too e mural, I'llrisky had to be done or he would go on to more muralspalliative care. including mobility and visual ones," said Jan. "We were initially told to be prepared to lose him and were just so grateful that he came through. We didn't really appreciate the damage the bleed had caused.

"Ideally, he would have gone into rehab but, as he would have been the youngest person by about 50 years, it was agreed that he would be a day patient and I would take him in. It was at this point we suddenly realised we were pretty much on our own and the battle for help began."

Tyler developed a Parkinson's-type tremor after his stroke and had tried an electric wheelchair in hospital. But getting one for him to use at home seemed neverending, said Jan. "Over a year on from the stroke, we still have the bed in the lounge and are waiting on a chair that will offer sufficient support to allow Tyler to actually sit up and have a meal. We have been waiting for this for some time due to red tape and complicated funding processes, so at present Tyler has to continue on his bed.

"To date, we have been assessed by hospital occupational therapists, community ones, council officials and now we need further wheelchair assessments.

Each of these teams have waiting lists and don't link up. THis seems a huge waste of official time. Surely, one report could be shared by all? When I tried to explain that Tyler was a teen who had been through so much I was cut short and told processes had to be followed but why do they take so long?"

Filipino voices heard FILIPINOS highlighted their culture in Bognor Regis for a global spotlight on their homeland.

THey dressed in their native costumes and served traditional food during the town's participation in the latest Women's World Day of Prayer.

THis year's service was compiled by the women of the Philippines and took place at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with a congregation of about 100 women and men of various faiths.

One of those involved in drawing attention to her homeland was Precy Marley. She said: "It is a real honour for the Philippines to be chosen to arrange the service this year.

"We are so proud to have our country featured.

"THe prayers are really needed because we are always hit by natural catastrophes like typhoons, floods and earthquakes.

"THere is also a lot of poverty in the Philippines as well, with 70 per cent living in poverty."

She and her friends - Edna Linton, Mary Bautista, Claire Wilson, Mel Regoso, Jasmine Stevens, Mercy Mamaig, Fe Castillo and Sonny Castillo - served rice

cakes and spring rolls.

THe service last Friday had the theme of Am I Being Unfair to You? and featured voices from Filippino women. THey were Merlyn - who had to fight to clear her name of theft; Nicole - who was forced to seek work overseas: Celia - fighting for land to farm; and Editha - a widow helped after Typhoon Haiyan.

Prayers and Bible readings were also included in the service as well as dance, readings and drama from the gospels performed by pupils of St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Bognor Regis and St Philip Howard Catholic High School, Barnham.

Women's World Day of Prayer area organiser Janet Tapping said: "THis is one of 6,000 Women's World Day of Prayer services in the British Isles. It is the same service that was first performed in Samoa at dawn today and will carry on around the globe in this 24 hours.

"It's very special and that's why we want to keep it going in Bognor Regis.

"THe service provides worldwide recognition of the lives of women in other countries and their needs."

` Heads make joint demand for funds HEADTEACHERS around Bognor Regis have joined together to urge the town's MP to stand up for them.

THe school leaders launched a campaign last night with their counterparts across West and East Sussex, Essex and Cornwall to call for more funds.

THey said Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb needed to do more to stop their pupils being short-changed. One of the heads involved, South Bersted CE Primary School's Chris Kronda, told Mr Gibb their schools were gripped by significant funding issues.

"Schools in your constituency are making far reaching cuts to services that are already stretched to breaking point," he said.

"THese include reducing staffing levels, increasing class sizes and making profound reductions to children's pastoral and mental health services. Decisions being taken by headteachers are no longer being driven solely by what is best for students and their families.

"THe key feature of our strategic work is frequently underscored by a sense of 'damage limitation'.

"To make matters worse, we are also confronted by a chronic shortage of teachers in virtually every subject area."

Mr Kronda said Mr Gibb, who is also the school standards minister, should only vote for a new funding formula with minimum adequate money for each school.THe funding should also consider financial burdens like pension costs.

Swim helps church grow FIT MEMBERS of a Bognor Regis church doubled the distance they had to complete in a sponsored swim.

A total of 42 worshippers, some pictured above, at the Opengate church, swam just under 44 miles to raise money for its new extension.

THis was equal to crossing the English Channel twice - instead of their original goal of once - with about an extra mile in both directions. THe amount raised by their aquatic efforts is likely to be about £2,000 - to leave the appeal less than £10,000 short of its £340,000 target.

Jamie Fredricks, the church's minister in training, said: "THis was a fantastic effort which our member, Simon Whitehead, and his team put together.

"We had nine to ten-year-olds swimming more than 3,000 metres to those who swam just a few lengths. THeir ages also ranged past retirement age."

One of those who took part in the swim was Micah Williams, nine, who is also a member of Chichester Westage Triathlon Club. "I swam 130 lengths," he said. "I do a lot of swimming with the triathlon club.

I did front crawl all the way. It was fun and good to have a swim to raise money.

"I'm just looking forward to going into the new building where we can have a Kids' Church to learn about the Bible in a fun way."

THe open challenge swim took place during two Saturday evenings last month at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham.

Some 70,000 metres were completed of the centre's pool, thanks to help from Matt Williams at the centre.

Simon said: "I am amazed by the people

in this church every time. We have events to help people in China and Romania, as well as a Christmas lunch, and everyone comes together and do very well all the time. I thought the swim would be a tough event but those who took part excelled themselves."

Certificates were presented by Jamie to the swimmers at a recent service at the church in Victoria Drive.

THe swim was one of many fundraising events held by its congregation towards the new family and community centre at the front of the church as its biggest project in decades.

THey have included a gift day during which some £60,000 was donated, a fish and chips supper, a Valentine's afternoon tea and an autumn fair.

Jamie said: "THe new building will be a big difference to the work of the church and we will also be able to do a lot of work with the community in it.

"We have a Sunday School with 50-60 members and they are tucked around our current building in back rooms. THey will be able to have light, open and modern rooms. THey have been designed for the needs we have."

Many hundreds of visitors a week are expected to use the new centre after its scheduled opening next month. THey will include mothers and toddlers, the church's nursery school, weekly youth groups, holiday clubs, Bible groups and ladies and men's meetings.

THe centre - with about 200 sq m of floorspace - is the largest project by the congregation since the move into the present church in 1963.

Care home plans UP TO 90 Butlin's workers can be accommodated in a Bognor Regis town centre premises formerly run by nuns.

Planning approval for the change of use of St Joseph's, Essex House and Blackbird Cottage from a care home to a house in multiple occupation for the holiday company has been given by Arun District Council.

Council planning officer Simon Davis says in his report: "THere is no doubt that the change of occupancy from nuns/ care home patients to Butlin's staff will represent a change to the character of the building in terms of its use.

"However, it does not automatically follow that the new occupiers will be

noisier and that the character of the area will change as a result of the approval of this planning application."

A total of 16 letters of objection to the plan were received by Arun. THe protestors claimed the change would harm the area's peaceful character, put pressure on parking spaces and the need for rental homes for families.

Bognor Regis Town Council raised no objection provided mitigation measures proposed by Butlin's for noise, transport and the management of the site were put into effect.

Mr Davis said the matters were covered by conditions attached to his approval.

Mr Gibb and his fellow West Sussex MPs, Nick Herbert and Sir Peter Bottomley, have been made aware of problems encountered by some park home residents in their constituencies.

With Mr Slade's help, they used their meeting with Mr Barwell to raise the residents' concerns and the difficulties Arun has encountered in enforcing the Mobile Homes Act 1983 that was meant to protect them.

THe MPs and Mr Slade are seeking two changes. One is to amend the Act to ban variable service charges being levied by site owners that are on top of the pitch fees.

PARK home residents could gain more protection under new laws being proposed by the Bognor Regis MP. Nick Gibb has been working with two other MPs and Arun District Council environmental health officer Nat Slade to seek legal changes to address problems encountered by some of the residents.

THey met the government's housing minister, Gavin Barwell, last week, to state their case.

Mr Barwell told them he was concerned about the matters they had raised and would take them into account during his imminent review about the Mobile Homes Act 1983.

"I am very concerned about the problems being encountered by some park home owners," said Mr Gibb.

` Councillors thank uni vice-chancellor AN OFFICIAL letter of thanks to retiring vice-chancellor Professor Clive Behagg is to be sent by Bognor Regis Town Council.

Members agreed at their meeting on Monday to record their gratitude for the effort which Prof Behagg, pictured below, had made in improving and expanding the University of Chichester's presence in the town.

Cllr Tony Gardiner said: "Prof Behagg has put in a lot of work in recent years to the university's role in the town and has overseen a lot of investment in its campus here."

THe councillors also decided to invite his successor, Dr Jane Longmore, to meet them to discuss the university's future role.

"To meet the new vice-chancellor sometime in May or June would be good," said Cllr Gardiner (C, Marine North). "THat would enable her to get to know us and us to know her."

Big impact of short stories

YOUNG authors at Felpham Community College have entered a writing wonderland.

THe 17 students have seen their short stories based on a Welcome to Wonderland theme accepted for publication. THey will be included in the Sussex version of the national book and sent to the British Library and other libraries across the UK. Felpham's writers were selected from 18,000 entries countrywide for the quality of their 100-word submissions.

Stephen Castle, an English teacher at the college, said: "To have 17 stories published from the college is a great achievement. All students who entered spent time on their submissions and we were impressed with the ideas and enthusiasm they gave."

KEEN young golfer Jake Stoneham used his golfing skills to help Sussex to an overseas win.

Felpham Community College Year 11 student Jake was selected by the county to take part in warm weather training.

His spell in Portugal ended in a match against a team of Portuguese All Stars and professionals where he played well to win his match and clinch the overall victory for this team.

Jake also benefited from training from an England coach and playing in a range of other matches.

He said: "It was a good trip and great experience. I actually got a hole in one on day two which was brilliant.

"I have been playing golf since I was nine and my dad got me into it.

"I was one of the younger ones who went to Portugal and felt honoured to have been chosen - and pleased that I did so well.

"I am now looking forward, hopefully, to qualifying for the England Under-16s McGregor Trophy this summer."

Jake has been playing for Sussex since he was 11 and is a member of its Under18s team.

He was one of ten members of the men's Sussex first team chosen to travel to Portugal.

Support and inspiration for women as town joins in worldwide event 'COMBINED solutions' was the theme of the International Women's Day event held at the Regis Centre on Wednesday.

In full the theme was focused on the combined burden of violence, abuse and poverty in the lives of women, an issue many people were keen to address on the day.

Enthusaistic organisations, companies and individuals gathered to share their ideas and support and were joined by members of the public interested in making a change.

Alongside stalls providing information on support groups and charities, there were fundraising stalls set up to raise money for important causes, trial sessions for different types of therapies such as massage and raiki, and a series of talks taking place on the stage of the Alexandra THeatre.

THis year, the all-day event was sponsored by My Sisters' House, a local Women's Centre dedicated to helping vulnerable women of all ages and backgrounds. THe centre's founder, Julie Budge, spoke of how pleased she was to see so many people involved with the day.

She said: "It has been really amazing today.

"I've had some great conversations with people who are recognising important issues faced by women."

THat was a key part of the day: communication. Members of different organisations found they were able to easily discuss their work with other groups, something they don't always have the chance to do.

Workers from social care and health charity CGL (Change, Grow, Live) expressed how the the event would benefit their future endeavours.

Vivian Hawes, of CGL, said: "It has been wonderful.

"We've gathered information about other services and help available for the people we look after.

"It's important to know what other groups are out there in order to create a network of support."

THe day was opened by West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith, who emphasised the event's priorites of comradery and change.

She said: "It is such a great time to come together to celebrate where we've come from and where we're going."

THese sentiments were echoed in her speech in the theatre auditorium that officially opened the day.

She compared the status of women now to what it was when the first (unofficial) International Women's Day took place in 1914.

She said: "THat period of time was the start of the real liberation for women.

"Since then, we've moved forward. In 1914, I would not have been stood here as leader of a county council.

"THe doors have been opened by those women. However, I'm saddened that although these doors have been opened, not all women will make it through."

She urged the audience to act upon this and said: "THe first step for these women is to make it through the door to My Sisters' House."

THe impact of women who fought for their rights 100 years ago was never far

from the thoughts of those attending the day.

Kevin Page, from THe Votes For Women Centenary Group, was there to provide the public with an in-depth history of the suffragette movement in our local area.

He explained why he was involved.

He said: "It is important people are aware about what they did. It is a shame now that there is still massive inequality.

THere's a long way to go."

Looking to the future, however, was also considered essential. Stacey Addison from the University of Chichester was there as to provide social media coverage.

She was especially enthusiastic about the collection of selfie-cards available to the public on which inspirational messages were written such as: "I will be bold and challenge gender inequality."

Stacey was pleased to see how many members of the public were involved.

She said: "It's been really great. THere was a queue out of the door this morning."

Interactive art stations were also set-up to highlight the importance of working together.

In particular the hand-weaving piece represented connectivity.

People were asked to add their own piece of string to the hand, eventually creating a web-like effect.

Furthering this idea Louise Goldsmith emphasised how all people must stand together for change, regardless of gender, age or background. She said: "You are all invited to fight against gender inequality... We all have a worth: men and women."

“While this, sadly, was the last time we will be meeting as a committee, I am pleased to announce groups will still have the opportunity to apply for funding in the future.”

THe region previously covered by the committee - Arundel, the Six Villages, Findon and the surrounding villages - is being divided between the joint eastern and joint western area committees in cutbacks led by West Sussex County Council.

THe final meeting took place in Arundel and also saw money donated to Home-Start Arun (£417.15), Walberton Pavilion (£509) and Walberton Village Hall (£1,679.99). THe Community Initiative Funding for groups in the area will still be available from the new committees.

Residents step into past to learn about church's history

HISTORY from four centuries was on show to give Pagham's parish church a future.

THe artefacts formed part of a heritage day at St THomas a'Becket Church to add to its Raise the Roof appeal for essential works.

Well over a hundred people went along to the occasion to be delighted and intrigued by the range of reminders of the past on display.

THey included the church's Bible from 1639 to 20th century documents.

Valerie Roberts, 75, of Nyetimber, and her husband, Brian, 77, were pleased to see details of their sons' confirmations in the church's official register.

Adrian was confirmed in February, 1979, and Martin in February, 1981.

Mrs Roberts said: "It's lovely to see their confirmations. It's the first time we have seen them in the register. I can't believe how long ago they were."

Pagham resident Michael King, 81, also found the details of the confirmations of his sons - Andrew in November, 1975, and David in February, 1979.

"David has gone on to be a vicar in Eastbourne," he said. "It's great to see this information and I remember the service. I was also involved in the 78 Club. I was asked with two others by the then vicar, the Rev John Maynard, if we would run it and so we did.

"It started off in the church vestry and then moved into the church hall in

Nyetimber Lane. THere were about 20 members.

"I had to give up after a while and the vicar's wife, Beryl, took over the club."

THe club was among the historical information in a whistlestop tour of 800 years of the history of the church by one of its churchwardens, Stephen CoxRusbridge.

His illustrated presentation also touched upon a suicide in the church, archaeological work and the controversial words of one press-loving vicar, the Rev Grosvenor Goode Knox, in his 51 years in charge.

"He loved being in the papers," said Mr Cox-Rusbridge. "At one time he was quoted as referring to Bognor Regis as the daughter of Pagham's church and Aldwick as the grand-daughter. Once again, Pagham's historic importance is put out there. " St THomas a'Becket stands on the site of a place of Saxon worship and can trace its history through Norman, Elizabethan and the following eras as it has evolved to provide a mix of continuity and change.

But £250,000 is required to carry out extensive works on the church's roof to prevent stop rain getting into the church.

A bid for some £200,000 has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the work.

THe success of the history open day will add to the £70,000 the church members have raised since last year.

Tyler's cause is set to hit milestone A THOUSAND gifts of kindness is the next goal of a Barnham teenager's charity.

Tyler's Trust is closing in on the target of boxes packed with toys and practical items since it was set up by Tyler Murphy just over three years ago.

Tyler, 19, began to put together the presents after his experience being treated for a brain tumour made him aware of a lack of help for young patients.

THe trust's aim is to provide each child with a unique and personalised gift box of presents such as balloons, bandanas, head scarf, teddy bear, mug, beaker, journal, pens, sweets and a voucher.

THe good cause has grown into a registered charity backed by DJ and television star Fearne Cotton, former Southampton and Wales keeper Paul Jones and Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs.

Janice Ellis, Tyler's mum, said: "We have given out 250 gift boxes to young patients like Tyler as well as double that number to their parents and siblings, to take the total up to as many as 750.

"When we first had to go in an ambulance to Southampton with Tyler, we couldn't even clean our teeth. It's so hard for the families who find themselves in the position we did. We want parents in that situation now to at least be able to wash

and do their teeth.

"We've expanded the area we cover to the Chichester, Worthing, Portsmouth and Southampton hospital regions. We will not get any bigger but we want to increase the service we offer to local families by putting items in parents' rooms at the hospitals.

"It's very expensive for the families when children are seriously ill. It means they are treated at Southampton from here and that's a lot of money for petrol and parking with all the frequent visits needed."

Trust treasurer Michelle Dodd said: "I don't think people can believe what goes into a box. THey are quite large and there's a lot of things we can get into them."

Toys, baby clothes and cot sheets are among the goods starting to be supplied to the hospitals by the trust.

It was in 2010 that Tyler started suffering severe headaches and sickness at night.

A scan revealed he had a brain tumour and he was instantly referred to hospital in Southampton. A large amount of the tumour was removed.

He continues to undergo treatment but his devotion to the trust has never wavered.

Jackie said: "Tyler has been really ill but the trust is so important to him. He had to have very risky surgery last year but he delayed it until after our first family fun day so he could be there."

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a burglary in Church Road, Yapton.

Between 5.45am and 5.50am on February 22, the home owner, a 37-year-old man, was woken by the sounds of someone trying to break into his garage where his car is kept.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "It appears as though the suspects have attempted to push the car, a classic Beetle, out of the garage before they were disturbed by the victim.

"THey made off with some tools.

A FUN quiz night to save lives is being held by Bognor Regis Lions Club.

THe event, with a host of silly prizes to be won, is being held at 7pm on March 31 at THe Rowland Rank Centre on Aldwick Road.

Proceeds are to go towards a defibrillator for the town centre.

THis will be used to treat members of the public who suffer life-threatening cardiac problems.

THe Lions have raised about half of the £2,000 total they need.

Town could follow Sheffield's example MICHAEL PALIN is a fan of winter gardens.

THe famous broadcaster, author, traveller and former Monty Python star is the patron of Sheffield's version of the botanical focal point.

THe South Yorkshire's city's site is the inspiration for the ambitious £50m-plus scheme put forward for Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council members on Wednesday backed the 11 decisions by the council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee last week to begin the initial work to turn the design into reality for the Regis Centre site.

If the proposals do end decades of searching for a successful regeneration scheme, the town will be following the multi-award-winning example of Sheffield's version.

Michael Palin, a native of Sheffield, is

quoted saying about the stunning green world with more than 2,500 plants from around the globe: "THe Winter Garden is absolutely beautiful. THe scale of it is very powerful. I love the use of timber.

You tend to see an awful lot of concrete in city centres around this country and it's nice to see that this is made of wood and seems a very organic building.

"I love the fact that it's close to the Millennium Galleries, which is another very striking building. It's great that people will be able to move between the two. In the past, there have been buildings in Sheffield that have not been that great and it's fantastic that there are two examples of top class architecture so close together in the city centre. It's wonderful."

A spokesman for Sheffield City Council said: "We have approximately 1.8m

visitors a year as recorded on our people counters. THis does not always reflect people travelling to Winter Garden as a final destination, as many are using the building as a walk-through, in line with its design concept.

"But the building continues to attract high visitor numbers and is still a muchloved attraction and meeting point in the heart of the city centre."

Work began on Sheffield's Winter Garden after the extension to the town hall was demolished. It opened in 2002, having been conceived as a covered galleria and an integral part of the network of pedestrian streets which forms a pedestrian hub with the Millennium Galleries linking the civic, arts and university quarters of Sheffield to create a cultural route through to the city centre.

THe building is 70m long and 22m high and large enough to house 5,000 domestic greenhouses.

Pevsner's Architectural Guide to Sheffield states: "THe soaring arches and curved glass roof of the exotically planted Winter Garden is a skilful blend of the traditions of glass-roofed public spaces established in the 19th century by glasshouses, shopping arcades and railway stations. "...its frame is formed from 21parabolic arches of laminated strips of untreated larch, which are gradually weathering to a silvery grey. Slender timber purlins and glazing bars create a fine framework between the arches to hold over 2,000sq

"THe primary arches are supported at ground level on sculptural steel cradles, while the intermediate arches finish at wall height and sit on elegant wooden raking struts. From the arches at each end, which lean outward to create canopies over the street entrances, they step up to the 72 ft (22metre) high central section. THis will allow the taller species of trees, including Norfolk Island pine

and eucalyptus, to reach an impressive maturity, creating a luxuriant canopy above the paving and planting below.

"Clear and legible with forms and materials that are natural and familiar, the Winter Garden is spectacular and awesome providing a memorable experience for all visitors – young and old."

Wood's clean up

Eagle-eyed volunteers collected a bag of discarded items every six minutes during last weekend's event in Bluebell Wood.

THeir community-minded efforts with the gardening gloves and litter-pickers saw a total of 1,760 litres - or 22 bags - of debris picked up from a few hundred metres of the site between the High Street and Butlin's.

THe litter-pick was part of the Great British Spring Clean weekend last Saturday and organised by the Bognor Regis in Bloom working party.

Rebecca Vervecken, the working party's organiser, said: "THere have been 12 of us in all picking up the litter. THey included the town's mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon.

"It feels like we have done something positive. I think we have done a great job between us. Every little helps to keep the town clean.

"I've lost count of the number of tins of alcohol I've picked up from the bushes. Most of them have still had drink inside them."

THis was the second year in which the area, which has a cyclepath and footpath running alongside it, had been the focus of a community spruce up.

THe event in 2016 took place as part of the nationwide Clean for the Queen celebrations to mark the monarch's 90th birthday.

But Rebecca, who works for Bognor Regis Town Council, said tackling litter was a neverending battle.

"It's a constant job to keep areas like this clear of litter. Even as we've been doing this, people have thrown items into the areas of

But Rebecca said the two hours of effort had been worthwhile. Residents as well as town councillors had taken part.

"THis is a part of town that needs to be cleaned. We chose it because it can overlooked.

"It's not like Hotham Park opposite or the main roads or the seafront, but it's an important route to and from the town centre by car or on foot or cycling. It's important it looks as clean as possible," she said.

"But, unfortunately, that also means it's an easy area for people to dump some litter."

Olympic great Sally backs rescue charity f Supporters at Back to the 60s

Sixties fun is big boost for trust LOOKING back half a decade has helped the Aldingbourne Trust look forward.

THe charity benefited from the latest Back to the 60s revival at the Riverside Caravan Centre in Bognor Regis.

A staggering 500 people attended and enjoyed great music from a series of original artists. THeir generosity and enjoyment of a great night out ensured £5,178.21 was raised for the trust's work with adults with learning disabilities.

Trust managing director Sue Livett, pictured far right with revellers, said: "It was an amazing event with great music organised by a fabulous team who generously gave all the profits to the Aldingbourne Trust."

THe 1960s occasion was the latest of the annual nostalgic trips back in time staged at the venue in Shripney Road.

Musicians who took part included Johnny Devlin & THe Detours and friends, THe Diamonds with Pete Manville, THe Fenmen with Roy Haines, THe Southbeats, Cosy and Colin Madeley.

THey came from across the UK and as far away as Italy and gave their time for free.

THe caravan centre provided the venue free of charge and Yamaha Music provided prizes such as a guitar and keyboard. THe keyboard's winner immediately donated it to the trust's Access Music project.

FORMER Olympic champion Sally Gunnell has joined volunteers who help to rescue vulnerable people around Sussex.

THe 400m hurdler has become the patron of Sussex Search and Rescue.

THe group is the primary volunteer resource used by Sussex Police to search for missing people. THe charity is on call 24 hours every day throughout the year and receives no government funding.

And the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth 400m hurdles gold medal winner, Sally Gunnell, OBE, has decided to back its efforts.

THe 50-year-old, from Steyning, said: “I am delighted to be able to support such a wonderful charity. THe service that Sussex Search and Rescue offers is vital for our community and these volunteers give so much time and effort to help those who need them the most across Sussex."

Sally retired as a competing athlete in September, 1997, after a running career which saw her claim two Olympic, three World, two European and six Commonwealth medals. She is the only female 400m hurdler to have won the Olympic and world titles and broken the world record.

Danny Wood, chairman at Sussex Search and Rescue, said: “Sally Gunnell is one of Britain’s greatest ever athletes and we are proud to be able to call her our patron. We are excited to have Sally on board."

THe Bognor Regis Concert Band is holding

a fundraising musical evening next month in aid of Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

THe expected repertoire on the night will include Phantom of the Opera, The Lone Ranger, The Lion King, a selection of Irving Berlin's showstoppers and some blockbusters from the movies of Disney.

THe concert is being held from 7.30pm to 10pm on March 18 at St Mary's Centre in Grassmere Close, Felpham.

Chestnut Tree House at Poling offers support for more than 300 children in Sussex and south east Hampshire and their families. THe goal of the hospice's staff and volunteers is to provide the best quality of life for patients and their relatives.

Whether it’s a tempting all-day breakfast, a healthy jacket potato or a filling homemade main meal like a lasagne that you’re after, THe Clock House Cafe will not disappoint with its delicious and extensive menu.

Lunch is also a treat at the Clock House. All their meals are lovingly prepared in the cafe’s kitchen by their talented chefs. Highlights include the delicious lasagne, of which there is both a meat and vegetable option.

I also love their flavoursome soups: both tomato and basil, and leek and potato which are equally nourishing and warming, perfect for the cold weather. Priced at only £3.50 for the soup and a crusty bread roll, it is such good value.

THeir menu also includes such tasty delights as fillet steaks, beef and chicken burgers, and a range of sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and salads.

Can sleep affect weight gain?

HAVE you ever considered that your weight gain may be something to do with how many hours of sleep you are getting?

Being short on sleep has been proven to directly affect your weight. THink of it this way... while you weren't sleeping, your body cooked up a perfect recipe for weight gain. Here’s how: When you’re short on sleep, it’s easy to lean on a large milky coffee and a butter croissant to get moving in the morning. You might be tempted to skip exercise because you are simply too tired.

THen the downward spiral begins! You nibble on biscuits and cake all day, get a takeaway or ready meal for dinner, and find yourself going to bed late because you’re uncomfortably full.

More than a third of us aren't getting enough sleep on a regular basis, and experts agree that getting enough zzz’s is as important to your health, wellbeing, and your weight, as diet and exercise.

You see, sleep is like nutrition for the brain.

Most people need between seven and nine hours each night. Get less than that, and your body will react in ways that lead even the most determined dieter straight to the ice cream pot!

Why? Because insufficient sleep impacts your hunger and fullness hormones, including two called ghrelin and leptin.

Ghrelin signals to your brain that it’s time to eat. When you’re sleep-deprived, your body makes more ghrelin. Leptin, on the other hand, cues your brain to put the fork down.

Here’s why that’s bad: When your body doesn't respond properly to insulin, your body has trouble processing fats from your bloodstream, so it ends up storing them as fat.

So what do we do?

At night time you need to turn off laptops and mobile phones and get them out of the bedroom.

Use something else as your alarm and sleep with them out of the way.

Don’t eat too late, have a warm bath with soothing essential oils in and make your bedroom feel lovely. Fresh sheets, low lighting, and even some calming music.

If this is not enough, acupuncture works brilliantly for sleep issues, as does cranial osteopathy, physiotherapy, (to help correct any aches and pains) massage, herbal medicine and the correct nutrition.

Magnesium is a great mineral to help encourage sleep, as is passionflower, valerian and St Johns Wart. Chamomile tea is a great relaxant as are bananas, because of their high potassium and magnesium content.

So, before you concentrate on your weight management, look at your sleep and see if that

could help solve your problems!

Put a spring in your step with Majestic wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

AS WE enter the merry month of March, with spring lurking around the corner with almost mercurial haste, twas indeed Majestic advertising the most enticing offers - so I duly headed off in that direction in search of quality wines!

In terms of white wines, one of my favourite wines there is the Montagny Premier Cru Les Millières 2015, a wine that exudes freshness, balanced acidity and citrussy lightly buttered flavours.

THis 2015 vintage, like its predecessor, is a delectable example of an oak-free white burgundy and presents as pleasingly soft on the palate with peach , pear and acacia aromas . If one of six bottles, it is competitively priced between ten and eleven pounds and would grace any dinner party! An Antipodean alternative then caught my eye in the form of a 2016 Sauvignon Blanc regally entitled THe King's Favour from the much-vaunted Marlborough region of New Zealand.

Somewhat less explosive in the mouth than the 2015 version, the product of winemaker Brent Marris, a descendent of the noble De Marisco family, whose members fell in and out of favour with

the English monarchy in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Feeling mildly effervescent, I next ventured to the sparkling section and preferred a New Zealand NV sparkling wine to the Champagne on offer at £15.99, if one of six.

THe Cloudy Bay Pelorus is, à mon avis, the Rolls-Royce of champagne alternatives exuding toasty, creamy complexity, good bubbles with hazelnut

and brioche flavours to the fore and at a reduced £17.99 one to stock up for special occasions!

As I turned to reds on offer, I espied an old favourite of mine, namely the Rigal L'instant Truffier 2015 Malbec priced alluringly at £7.99, if one of six, and believe this wine is a fine Malbec with aromas of black cherry and bramble fruit with juicy fruit and peppery tannins, one you can taste at the Bear in

INGREDIENTS • 1kg/2lb 2oz feather blade steak, trimmed and cut into 250g/10oz pieces • 3 tbsp oil • 3 banana shallots or 1 medium onion, sliced • 2 celery sticks, trimmed, sliced • 2 carrots, thickly sliced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 250ml/10fl oz red wine • 500ml/17fl oz beef stock • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme • 1 bay leaf • 1 tsp English mustard • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

One other red of note was the 2010 Vieux Château Landon Médoc currently on offer, if one of six, for £11.99. Red fruits dominate this wine with nicely melted tannins and a long finish!

Braised feather blade beef Method Preheat the oven to 160C/320F/ Gas 3.

Season the beef on both sides with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Heat one tablespoon of the oil in a large heavy-based frying pan. Fry the steak pieces over a medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until browned. Transfer the beef pieces to a casserole dish. (You may need to do this in batches.)

Return the frying pan to the hob and reduce the heat. Add the remaining oil and gently fry the shallots, celery and carrots for 6-8 minutes or until golden-brown and softened. Stir in the garlic, cook for a further minute and add the mixture to the casserole.

Deglaze the pan with wine and allow to bubble for a few seconds, stirring constantly and pour over the meat and vegetables. Stir the stock and the tomato purée. Strip the thyme leaves from the stalks and scatter into the pan, add the bay leaf and mustard and stir until

well combined. Bring to the boil and remove the dish from the heat.

Cover the surface of meat and liquid carefully with a piece of greaseproof paper. Place a lid on top and cook in the oven for 3-3½ hours or until the beef is very tender. Skim any fat away from the surface that appears during cooking.

Transfer the meat to a plate.

Strain the cooking liquor and vegetables through a sieve into a large non-stick frying pan. Press the vegetables with the bottom of a ladle to extract a rich purée and stir into the cooking liquor.

Add salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste.

Bring the mixture to a simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce is well reduced, thick and glossy.

Add the beef to the liquid and heat through for 3-4 minutes, spooning over the sauce to glaze. Serve with some green vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Community News & Views PUTTING spare time to good use will be the subject of a special evening this month.

Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester is staging the occasion to provide information about becoming a charity trustee.

Its Introduction to Trusteeship evening will take place from 5.30pm-7.30pm on March 20 at THe Loft at THe Body Shop in Watersmead in Littlehampton.

THose who go along will be able to find out how they can use their skills and experience to help the community around Bognor Regis and Chichester to thrive.

In return, they will gain new skills and training, increase their knowledge of the voluntary sector and build rewarding and successful partnerships with their fellow trustees.

Mark Spofforth, the West Sussex High Sheriff, said he agreed with recent research that showed volunteering - either by helping directly or acting as a charity trustee - was good for an individual's health.

"THe speed we all live our lives these days, and coping with the pace of change, can be daunting. Taking a little time out to help others seems to enable people to achieve greater balance in their lives - and most say they get far more back from volunteering than they put in.

"Employers recognise this and support and encourage staff to give their time, making promotion and recognition more likely," he said.

Mark will be hosting the evening and Voluntary Action for Arun and Chichester is working with the Deputy Lieutenants of the county, the Royal Society of Arts, the Small Charities Coalition and THe Body Shop to encourage as many people as possible to find out more about the role of trustees.

THe relaxed and informal evening will be the ideal chance for individuals to find out about the role and see if becoming a trustee is suitable for them.

Trustees are the individuals who take decisions at the governing body of a charity. THe decisions they make impact on people's lives and make a difference to the area in which the charity operates.

THey have to act in the charity's best interests and ensure it is fulfilling its aims.

WEST SUSSEX Partners in Care (WSPiC), the local notfor-profit care association representing care provider services across West Sussex, is holding a one-day symposium on March 20 in Billingshurst which will address end of life care in the county.

THe aim of the event is to inform, debate and share issues concerning how we best support individuals in the terminal stages of life so that they achieve a ‘good death’.

THe symposium, which brings together social care and health professions, is entitled ‘YODO’ – You Only Die Once: Getting it right every time, and will offer delegates choices from a programme of 17 sessions which include personal testimony from relatives whose loved one’s wishes on how they wanted to die were supported and achieved, in contrast to cases where such planning and support was lacking.

Attendees will hear about important work being undertaken around West Sussex to support those approaching end of life;

how that support can differ markedly across the county and what professionals and caring organisations can do to share the best practice which is occurring.

Lou Bruce, WSPiC director and care home owner, highlights the ECHO Project (End of Life Care Hub) as an example.

"THis has been the most productive working group I have been involved in, a real drive and commitment supporting end of life care," he said.

Speakers at the event include Dr Sarah Russell (Hospice UK) discussing real world advance care planning.

Fellow contributors will address legalities in end of life care, the importance of education and training, and the part played by supporting excellence in care within residential settings or the individual’s home to reduce the need for admission to hospital at end of life.

Places at the symposium can be booked via the WSPiC website with a fee for delegates from non-WSPiC member organisations.

Dear Sir, Both Chichester District Council and West Sussex County Council must take much of the blame for all the options for upgrading the A27 being dropped. THe cancellation of the upgrade was confirmed by Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport, in a letter to both leaders and our MP, Andrew Tyrie, on February 28. I quote: ‘I have considered all representations and understand that this is a controversial scheme. THe support and funding contribution by the local authorities are both vital to its successful delivery.

After the withdrawal of support by the local councils for the shortlisted options and significant local campaigns, I am cancelling this scheme.'

I fully support the comments made to all district councillors

by Mark Dunn and also those stated by the MP for Arundel and South Downs, Nick Herbert, who said: ‘those who campaigned against improvements to the A27 southern bypass have inflicted a massive own goal on West Sussex, by lobbying for an unfeasible northern bypass and undermining the process. THey have effectively lost £200 million of infrastructure investment in the area.’

As the district councillor who represents Westhampnett and Lavant, I have continuously spoken against any northern option as this would have dissected these communities. A northern bypass would also have caused the closure of the international motor sports events at Goodwood, resulting in many thousands of pounds loss to the local economy. It would also have completely destroyed the southern boundary of the national park with increased noise and light pollution.

THe South Downs National Park also made the following statement: ‘THere is a strong presumption against any significant road widening or the building of new roads through a [national park] unless it can be shown there are compelling reasons for the new or enhanced capacity and with any benefits outweighing the costs significantly. Any investment in trunk roads should be directed to developing routes for long distance traffic which avoids the Parks.’

THere is a considerable sum of money available from the Community Infrastructure Levy for junction improvements on the A27 from the developments in the Local Plan at Westhampnett and White House Farm.

Surely, with county council elections looming in May, it’s now time for positive leadership and community cohesion from the prospective candidates to state their commitment to upgrading the existing A27 and to work closely with residents during the works.

TROLLEY rounds are continuing as a charity at a Chichester charity gets ready to move into new premises.

THe Friends of Chichester Hospitals is maintaining its daily service to the bedsides of patients before it is able to occupy a site in the outpatients' entrance area at St Richard's Hospital.

THe daily visits to the wards enable the patients to buy items such as newspapers and magazines, toiletries, drinks and bottles of squash.

Jane Ramage, the chairman of the Friends, said: "We are carrying on normally as far as possible. We will welcome all our customers back when we open in our new premises."

She added it the Friends were still unsure how long it would take before they were able to open their new shop.

THe Friends were based in a shop at the main entrance to the hospital for more than 20 years. But bosses of the hospital's operating trust have allowed the site to be redeveloped by Compass Group for a shop.

Dear Sir THank you for Sylvia Endacott's Changing Times article 'Clowns from around the world invaded town', about the origins of the International Clowns Convention.

I am, however, astonished she could write the entire onepage article without a single mention of Hal Brooks! Hal, whose clown persona of 'Kerby Drill' many will remember, not least because of his many activities in teaching schoolchildren about road safety, was if my memory serves, the prime mover and chief champion for the first Clown Convention in Bognor, and it simply wouldn't have happened without him. I'm sure there are others who can provide much more about Hal's efforts towards the establishment of the clowns convention, so perhaps this dreadful omission can be addressed in a later article.

Town road's history includes nuns and sheep Main thoroughfare has been known by a range of names THERE are a number of roads in the town that have their own very distinctive history - one being Hawthorn Road, which runs from the Chichester Road through to Aldwick, and is used as a short cut by many people. Do you know what names it has previously been called?

Do you know some of the people who have occupied various sites? THis week, we shall take look at this road while I ask you for other memories.

Early maps show a small lane called Sheepwash Lane, which contained a sheep dip.

Some of the land belonged to Harry Collyer, of South Bersted, but by 1886 the area was being shown as Dung Cart Lane. By 1904, a further map shows the road as Cemetery Road.

Even as late as 1924, there are still discussions on the name for this road, but there is a newspaper report from that year explaining the change to Hawthorn Road, as a name more becoming to a new modern Bognor – less vulgar, apparently. On some of the early maps it clearly shows the Sheepwash Barn, which was situated next to the convent.

In 1888, on September 14, Servite life was established, when Louise Raucheaueger, the Superior of a congregation of teaching sisters in London, arrived in Bognor. THis was to precede the building of a nunnery in Hawthorn

Road. Many local people can remember this construction, as it was not closed and demolished until the 1970s. THe main cemetery between Hawthorn Road and Town Cross Avenue was planned in 1875 and finally opened in 1887. THe reason for the nuns’ departure was the change from the quiet isolation of the fields in the 1880s into the major built-up area of the 1970s. THe Servite Convent finally closed its doors in 1975 to make way for a new housing development. Today, this area is known as Servite Close. When the convent closed, a number of the nuns had been there for over 50 years and it must have been difficult for them to leave the confines of the convent after such a long period of time.

Maps from 1912 show that, for a number of years there, was also the Bognor Isolation Hospital and this was shown in Bognor directories from 1916 to 1928. I have received a number of comments regarding the site of this hospital and suggesting it was in the region of Hillsboro Road and Parklands. THis is incorrect as numerous people have confirmed its existence.

THe Wheatsheaf public house moved from West Street but objections to its arrival were very vocal and a Mr Chamberlain remarked that ‘the vicinity did not require a public house’,

as it was entirely residential – I'm not quite sure why this was a reason for objection. However, it appeared from the report that the majority of the land had a covenant imposed on it so that only private dwellings could be built.

Also, of course, a public house would apparently ‘decrease materially the value of all the houses in the immediate neighbourhood.’

Some other objections included remarks that because ‘it was situated by a blind avenue, ladies would not like having to pass a public house.’ Remember, this is 1930!

One little known fact today is the existence of a boys’ home in the town. Known as the Bognor Boys’ Home for Waifs and Strays, it was in existence from 1890 until 1907. Its opening was recorded in the Bersted parish magazine in April, 1890, as follows: “On Easter Monday there will be declared open by Mrs Fletcher, Bersted Lodge, a new home for orphan and homeless boys.” It was intended for boys aged nine to 13 where they were to be clothed, fed and taught a useful occupation. Ultimately, these boys could be drafted to the Jersey Home for Working Lads in London from where they could obtain employment.

THese buildings were situated in the vicinity of today’s Indian restaurant and the new homes in Fletcher Way, off Hawthorn Road.

With the arrival of a new century – 1900 – the Bognor Football Club was becoming quite a feature of the town. One of the major changes for the club, new premises, were built this time in Nyewood Lane, a turning off Hawthorn Road.

However, according to the local paper, it was soon to be a retrograde step, as they felt ‘it takes a lot of interest to entice people to go to such an out of the way place’!

Within 12 months the financial report was

advising the club committee that they had to spend £6 15s (£6.75) to make a path to the Nyewood Lane site. It's difficult to imagine the area to be so ‘out of the way?’

Looking through the history of the road, I found it interesting to read about the laundries that occupied numerous sites near the cemetery. One was Mrs Verion’s laundry, which became the more well-known White Knight Laundry before its closure in 1993, after being known as the Rock Laundry when it was established in 1880.

Eventually, in 1896, following a possible merger with the Bognor & Bersted Laundry of Essex Road, it became known as the Bognor and Bersted Verion Steam Laundry Company.

Across the road, in premises last occupied by Mulberry Press, there was another laundry, that of Simmonds Model Laundry. THis area is now being redeveloped and the sign for Simmonds Model Laundry can be partly seen again, above.

Over the years, there have been some interesting memories in the local papers. One such article reported in 1957 a resident recalled the early days when there was a 'golf course stretching from Linden Road to the convent, and a black-bearded man who lived in a thatched cottage on a triangle of ground by the cricket field'.

A section of Linden Road from Victoria Drive to Hawthorn Road was constructed in the 1920s and 1930s and the houses remain much the same today, residential premises with their enclosed front and back gardens.

Another report in 1957 remembered when 'gypsies camped near Gravits Lane and Hawthorn Road'. THe report continued that the area was used 'by courting couples and Gravits Lane was often called Lovers Walk'.

It's crunch time for Chi as loss leaves the Blues facing the drop IT'S CRUNCH time for Chichester.

After an up-and-down season, the Blues are teetering on the brink.

THree losses in a row have left Rob Lawrence's side in danger of the drop.

And with bottom side Amersham and Chiltern visiting Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm), the Blues know that anything other than a bonus point win could make their position even more perilous.

THe trouble has been brewing for a little while now.

An upturn in form around Christmas time saw Chi pull themselves away from the bottom of National League THree London and South East division.

But a series of defeats, the latest a 33-5 reverse on the road at Westcliff last weekend, means the Blues need to rediscover that winning feeling - and fast.

Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "For the second time in three weeks Chichester took the long road to Essex and were defeated.

"THis time it was by the most improved team in the league, Westcliff, having won their previous six home games and riding high in mid-table.

"THey had extra muscle in their scrum and played with the control and cohesion which Blues lacked.

"Although two late converted tries made the scoreline a bit flattering, they were certainly the better side.

"Chichester played some decent rugby in fits and starts but following their triumphs against Dorking, Hertford and Sutton, they seem to have lost their self-confidence.

"THey have to be fully motivated and determined as they are hovering over the relegation trap door with Southend two points behind them and in form."

After going behind early at Westcliff, Chi hit back straight away - winger Ben Robson crashing over to level the scores at 5-5.

A tight 20 minutes followed but then after that the home side took charge.

Two forward tries made it 19-5 at the break.

Chi tried hard to make inroads in the lead in the second half but it was Westcliff who made their pressure count - scoring two more converted tries to ensure a bonus point win.

THe loss leaves the Blues fourth bottom and in need of a victory tomorrow against a side that has already beaten them this season.

FIVE weeks ago the future for Aldwick Cricket Club looked bleak after an arsonist torched their clubhouse.

Fridges, tables, chairs, benches, a fully working kitchen and thousands of pounds of cricketing equipment all went up in smoke as volunteers looked on in shock.

But thanks to the generosity of locals, the club in Brooks Lane is rising like a phoenix from the flames.

A crowdfunder has raised £8,000 in four weeks to buy equipment for the club's colts programme.

And just last week manufacturers Dunamis Cricket visited a training session to donate another cricket bat to be used in the upcoming season by the youngsters.

A spokesman for the club said: "From the outside, the rundown building was probably an eyesore. But inside it gave so many people so many memories.

"Hundreds of local youngsters would have walked out of this pavilion over the years

donning the whites of Aldwick Cricket Club.

"We will strive to be back, we have been inundated with support and offers of help and we are truly grateful to all of the local and more far reaching community for every message we have received.

"We will be back, it may take time but we will be back and we need your help."

THe fire broke out in the early hours of January 30 - the same week that the club was about to start winter training. A kids easter cricket camp was also planned.

After dealing with the initial shock, those who play at the Felpham Oval began rebuilding their club.

Bucket collections at football matches, cake sales and a widespread appeal online has seen people from all over the world pledge their support the community club.

While the total raised is still below the £10,000 club target, it will give them enough to get things ready behind the scenes for the new season ahead.

PostSport WITH only three weeks of the season left, the Friday Night Benevolent Darts League divisional singles knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club - and a joint record of 75 players took part across the three divisions.

Division 1 saw 30 players step up to the oche. THe early rounds saw a few tough matches, leaving Andy Stubbs (Hunston CC) facing former champion Rob Collins (POW 'Z') in the final.

Collins won the bullseye to start the final, but both players hit good scores to keep it even.

Stubbs left a finish after 21 darts, but Collins was already on his double and finished the leg with one dart.

Both players began the second leg scoring well. Collins missed double 12 for an 84 finish, Stubbs left double 1, Collins missed again, and Stubbs took the leg to level it up.

THe last leg saw a ton from Stubbs, but 125 and 140 from Collins. Stubbs eventually left himself a 170 out shot.

But Collins was on double top, and hit it with the first dart, taking the leg in 19 darts for his second Division 1 Singles champion title.

Division 2 saw 25 players take part and the final came down to Alex Norgett (Newtown Amity) and Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker 'A').

Robinson won the bullseye, but Norgett started with the better scores of 100 and 121, and then hit treble 20, single 20 and double 20 to take the first leg.

THe second leg saw Robinson forge ahead with a 140 and two tons. With 36 left he took 3 darts to hit the double and take the leg in 18 darts.

THe last leg saw Norgett start with 120 but slip with a few low scores. THis let Robinson once again take the lead but miss double top for the win.

Robinson slipped again for a few throws, missing the doubles and leaving himself with double one.

While this was happening Norgett was closing in, and eventually managed to hit single 1 and double 2 for the win, taking the Division 2 Singles champion title.

Division 3 saw 20 players take part with former division 1 champion Richard Pennells (POW Galleon) facing Stuart Gray (POW Galleon).

THe pair shared the opening legs taking it to a shoot out.

Pennells started the last leg with 125 and then 100, but Gray wasn't far behind.

Pennells missed the double with the last dart, giving Gray a chance.

Gray had 76 left, he hit single 16, but missed the single 20 and hit double 5.

THis left him with the bullseye, but he just missed and hit the 25.

Pennells then stepped up and hit double five with the first dart, taking the win and the Division 3 Singles title.

Surprise package Chi have a top three finish well in sights

CHI CITY are being urged to keep up their winning ways and secure a top three finish.

THe Oaklands Park side have defied the odds this season and find themselves with an outside shot of winning the title.

With just nine games to go, Chi are third in the SCFL Premier, five points off the top.

Even though the club has not applied for promotion, Miles Rutherford is urging his side to kick on and finish as high as they can.

Rutherford said: "We have said all along that we have over-achieved.

"We are in a situation where we thought we would be a top ten side and have ended up a top three side.

"From now to the end of the season we have to win every game we can."

Chi continued their good form with a 3-1 away win at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.

Goals from Jamie Horncastle, Lorenzo Dolcetti and Omar Barry secured the victory and ensure the Lillywhites keep the pressure on league leaders Shoreham.

Next up is a home match against AFC Uckfield tomorrow (3pm) with a trip to second-placed Haywards Heath Town the following week.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea maintains the future is bright for the Lions - and urged his side to keep up the fighting spirit to end the season on a high.

THe Nyetimber Lane side have been inconsistent all year and suffered a blow last month when five players parted ways with the club in one week But, despite the departures, Pagham have rallied and blooded a number of promising youngsters from their youth set-up.

With the club sitting fourth in the SCFL Premier and a cup final against Haywards Heath in May to look forward to, Shea has urged the revamped side to do the club proud over the coming months.

Speaking to the Post, Shea said: "THe story from now to the end of the season is to pick up as many point as possible and keep up the performaces.

"We want to finish as high as possible so we need to push on and finish the season off as well as we can.

"THe cup final will not affect us. We will try to win as may points as we can but the main

thing is the spirit is there."

Pagham showed their inconsistency in the past week, beating Loxwood at home 2-0 before losing out to relegation threatened Littlehampton on Tuesday evening.

THe 3-2 defeat came despite the Lions being down to nine men for the last 20 minutes of the match.

Next up is a trip to bottom side Hailsham Town tomorrow (3pm).

Shea said: "THe fighting spirit was there against Littlehampton but the performance wasn't. THe message from the manager [Mark Bennett] was that we didn't work hard enough. In fact, we worked harder when were down to nine men than with 11.

"We will bounce back though."

In terms of the move to youth, Shea said: "THe 21s are top of the league and and the 18s reached the county cup semi-final before losing to Whitehawk in the last minute.

"THe last two or three years have been very good and we're moving that way."

Andy Probee's side have been leading the way all season and currently sit eight points clear with six games left.

A little bobble a month ago, which led to two cup exits in back-to-back weeks, had some at Walton Lane fearing the worst.

But the Robins have returned to form, last week beating Alfold 4-1 at home, thanks to goals from Louis Bell, Bradley Miles, James Colinese and Marco Giambelardini Tomorrow the Robins face a trip to secondplace Jarvis Brook (3pm), a side that a month ago beat them 4-3 in the Division Two Challenge Cup. Probee's side know that if they can return

from Crowborough with all three points, then they will be one step closer to lifting the coveted title.

One side that could still upset the party is local rivals Sidlesham.

Daren Pearce's side are third, nine points behind the league leading Robins.

But with a game in hand and a trip to Walton Lane to come, the Sids know that one slip up could let them sneak in as the season draws to a close.

Pearce's side kept up the pressure last weekend with a 3-1 win away at Westfield, John Phillips (2) and THomas Kelly getting the goals.

Tomorrow the Sids travel to the University of Sussex to play mid-table Montpelier Villa.

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell has admitted he is over the moon that his super striker has opened his Rocks' account.

Charlie Moone had gone three games without scoring since he joined the Nyewood Lane side from Southern League outfit Slough Town.

THat was until he poked home the winner last week in the Rocks 1-0 win over Leatherhead.

Howell is now hoping the prolific frontman can repeat history and fire Bognor to promotion from the Ryman Premier, just like Moone did for Hampton and Richmond.

Strikers want to score goals and it will give him a great confidence lift moving forward.

"I thought he took the goal very well and I'm just pleased as he has played well since he came in and that will do him some good.

"It's the way things go for strikers. Maybe the service has been lacking, perhaps it's because we have had a few difficult games and chances have been at a premium - I think there are a number of reasons for that but all I can ask is for us to get the service right and then the goals will come."

Last week's 1-0 win means Bognor are

undefeated in six in the league.

However, the performances in that time have been far from convincing. With bigspending Havant now only one point behind with one game in hand, Howell is looking for a response in Suffolk tomorrow and then at Burgess Hill Town on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Sixth-placed Leiston will no doubt offer the sterner challenge of the two. THe home side will be buoyed after beating fellow playoff challengers Tonbridge Angels 2-0 in midweek.

Howell said: "We have two tough away games to come in the week but we have a good squad and I'm confident we have enough to do well."

He added: "I think the performance does matter. I would like to win three or four nil every week, I think every manager in the country would like that.

"Sometimes there are specific reasons for us not performing as well as we can but I can't fault the players' attitude and work rate.

"We just have to keep working hard, keep getting the crosses in and keep having shots.

"THe most important thing is winning the games we have."

And as for the threat of Havant?

Howell said: "Havant are there but they are expected to win the league. If they win every game they have left then they will do that.

"My job is to keep sure that we win as many games as we can."

Howell hints at Rocks' shake-up

IF IT ain't broke, don't fix it.

THere's a lot of truth in the old adage, not least when it comes to Bognor Regis Town Football Club.

In recent years manager Jami Howell and his assistant Darin Killpatrick have developed a winning formula at Nyewood Lane.

With the club now close to securing another promotion, this time from the Ryman Premier, it would take a big betting man to place odds on the pair changing things on the playing front. But, a string of unconvincing performances combined with the absence of Sami El-Abd (suspension, two games) and Dylan Barnett (leg injury), means that Howell and Co may shake things up.

THe pair had a perfect opportunity to try things out this week, when a British Army XI was beaten 2-1 at Nyewood on Tuesday night.

Howell said: "It was a good worthwhile run out. I looked at a few things I wanted to work on and it also possibly gave me a few ideas.

"We had a few people playing in certain roles. THere may be a change if I think it is necessary.

"But since I have been at the club things haven't changed too much in those years so we shall see."

WELL WHAT a fortnight it has been - and after a couple of tough matches the Rocks are still top of the table but with Havant in close pursuit.

A lot of Rocks supporters made the trip to Needham Market for our last game in February.

It was first versus third in a game all the fans were looking forward to.

We don’t mind spending nearly four hours in the coach and travelling all the way to East Anglia to see a performance.

And the Rocks didn’t disappoint in an open, endto-end first half display against the Marketmen.

As we got there at 1.20pm sharp (thanks to Chris the coach driver), we noticed how poor the state of the pitch was.

Cows wouldn’t look out of place on that surface and the weather deteriorated as the game went on. Oh the joys!

But, surprisingly, the game was free-flowing and players like Doug Tuck and Gary Charman enjoyed much of the play.

It was Charman’s header from James Crane’s cross that got us going on 22 minutes.

But the home side cancelled us out on 35 minutes in a similar move down the other end.

Two minutes later, though, Sami El-Abd was in the box to grab a scrappy goal and put us back in the lead.

We thought we might have been OK to see out the half until the break but we were wrong.

Kem Izzet’s fine strike on 44 minutes had Dan Lincoln well beaten.

As has been the case for most of the season, the second half worked out to be the complete opposite in comparison.

Hardly much happened, though Needham were rather wasteful in front of goal right at the end.

Still, a point kept us top but our advantage was sadly reduced.

Our next game saw Jimmy Bullard’s Leatherhead visit

Nyewood Lane.

What made me laugh was how the Tanners gaffer was trying to shoot into an empty net before the warm ups even started. He missed on every single attempt.

As I watched, a colleague of his was videoing him and I even heard Jimmy say “Don’t put that on Twitter!” after scuffing a shot well wide.

It’s a shame really for a guy who was one of the best English players around in his prime but due to injuries his playing career was cut short.

His team were hit with a fine Charlie Moone goal 42 minutes into the match.

I am so pleased that he has got off the mark.

I think part of the reason he hasn’t scored already is that he must be under pressure, plus the fact we have played only away on what were very difficult pitches (Wingate & Finchley’s excluded).

Again, like Needham, Leatherhead proved rather wasteful in front of goal whereas it was another dull second half really from Bognor.

But as the final whistle went it was a relief that we gained the three points.

Fair play to Jimmy who ignored all of the banter behind him in the dugout.

Either that or he wasn’t listening!

THis week sees us travel back out to Suffolk to take on sixth-placed Leiston.

I know they have had troubles with their pitch, too. Hence why they are so behind on matches.

Bognor know this all too well of course from last season, for different reasons.

We went far in the FA Trophy, whereas their pitch lets them down.

Let’s hope that the game is on and the players perform in what will be yet another difficult fixture.

I hope to see you on the coach tomorrow that leaves at 9.30am. THe Green Army are due a strong performance.
