Bill shock for Arcade traders ANGRY business owners in a Bognor Regis shopping area are meeting next week to discuss their response to unexpected bills.

Traders in The Arcade have been sent reeling by the sudden arrival of the demands for payment towards work carried out at the town centre site.

It is believed some of the bills are for well over £1,000.

A spokesman for them said: "The

tenants of The Arcade are having a meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the situation. All the tenants are expected to attend."

The meeting was raised on Wednesday night at Arun District Council's special budget meeting by Cllr Paul Wells.

Speaking afterwards, Cllr Wells (LD, Hotham) said: "Concerns have been raised with me as a ward councillor in relation to additional charges that have

Path fight goes to county council A CAMPAIGN to restore a footpath in Bognor Regis is about to be sent to rights of way officials.

David Meagher has gathered enough evidence from users of the route across a field to Felpham to ask them to make it officially available to the public.

He told his fellow Bersted parish councillors: “You need 20 witness statements from people who have used the path for more than 20 years to have it considered for designation as a public right of way.

“I have been co-ordinating the statements and I have them from 28 people. I think the longest use dates from 1965. I’ve probably got another statements from another 20 people who had been using the path for six months up to 18 years.

“There is a prerogative the path should become a public right of way because it has been in use for so long.

“I will be asking the county council’s rights of way officers to change their definitive map to add the path. That map contains all the public rights of way in the county.

“Once it has been designated as a public rights of way, the county council has a statutory duty to maintain it or make the landowner maintain it.”

The parish councillors agreed that his request for their backing for his campaign should be considered by their planning committee.

Cllr Martin Lury said: “I was not aware of the extent to which people used that

path. I knew it was used but it is actually very well used.”

As reported, the path off Brooks Lane was blocked off at all its three accesses by the landowner last autumn.

The field is on the boundary between Bognor Regis and Felpham and close to Bersted’s boundary as well.

This made it worth fighting to ensuring members of the public continued to have access to it, said Mr Meagher.

He said: “The path was extensively used by dog walkers. It had a social purpose because a lot of them they used to meet in the middle.

“But it was also used as a route to Bognor Regis by people living in Felpham, as well as people from Bersted.”

Cllr Jaine Wild, of Felpham Parish Council, was organising its response to the campaign, said Mr Meagher.

“There are plans to create a strategic walking route between Bognor Regis and the South Downs. It will be difficult to achieve that if this path is taken away.

“It also means the loss of an area for wildlife and we should be encouraging people to walk and to leave their cars at home,” he said.

He believed the landowner blocked the path because of the number of dogs being walked around the field.

The county council’s rights of way officers or committee will decide the application. They are advised by the government to consult with the owners and users but they do not legally have to do so.

Charity's services will carry on after closure of its shop PEOPLE living with sight loss have been re-assured by a Bognor Regisbased charity its work is continuing.

4Sight Vision Support said its range of services were unaffected by the closure of its charity shop on March 13.

The charity, of Victoria Drive, announced earlier this month the shop would not have its lease renewed.

A spokesman said: "The services we deliver from this centre are not affected by the closure of our charity shop in York Road.

"4Sight Vision Support is here to make a positive difference for people living with sight loss in Bognor Regis

and across West Sussex. We have three resource centres in the county.

"Whether someone needs information, practical or emotional support, equipment advice or just a chat with one of our trained team of outreach workers, we are here to help.

"We also host many social clubs and activities for people living with sight loss."

A new chat, cake and coffee morning is being held from 10am-11.30am on the last Friday monthly at the Victoria Drive centre. All people living with sight loss, including families, are welcome.

The environmentally aware pupils of The Regis School impressed judges of a national award with their commitment to sustainability.

The school's rights respecting ambassadors submitted an application in which they pledged to reduce the number of rubbish crates being sent to landfill and to greatly increase recycling rates.

Their efforts saw them become one of only five schools in the country to receive a Virgin Atlantic change in the air award run by WE Charity.

This has given the school £2,000 to spend on recycling initiatives and awareness raising of environmental issues.

The money will be used by the school's Green Team of school council

members, the A team and rights respecting ambassadors.

Caroline Saunders, an assistant principal at the school, said: "The student ambassadors worked incredibly hard on their application and are very worthy winners.

"This award, however, is only the beginning for us and kick-starts a new sustainability focus at the school.

"As part of our commitment to deliver an education with character, we constantly seek to impress on students how they have a responsibility to protect the environment they live in."

They will spread the message by taking part in the forthcoming Felpham and Bognor School Council's day and hope to enter the Bognor Regis Carnival this June.

Their green T-shirts, green message and lots of noise will encourage others to think twice and recycle, reduce or reuse.

As part of the Green Team's misson, they visited the materials recycling facility at Ford where waste from a large area is sorted.

Those on the visit included Pheobe Reeves, 13, and Paige Smith, 14.

Pheobe said: "One of the activities we took part in was to sort out some preprepared articles into containers which looked like rubbish but, by having more knowledge, we discovered was, in fact, either recyclable, reusable or reducible with only a tiny amount going to landfill."

Paige said: "We have really had our eyes opened to think differently about how we can recycle at home and at school."

WE Charity's senior programmes manager, Laura Reynolds, said: "The judges absolutely loved the application and how much it stood out from the others for creativity and the amount of detail and research that had gone into it."

BIDS to spend £2.5m on regenerating Bognor Regis and Littlehampton town centre were dismissed as gimmicks this week.

Liberal Democrats at Arun District Council wanted to see the money taken from its reserves and spent on the two towns.

They called for support in principle for their idea at the council's annual budget meeting on Wednesday.

But they were soundly defeated by 33-4 votes, with three abstentions.

Similar proposals to ensure Arun took on at least six more apprentices and set up a scheme to give ward councillors £2,000 each to spend in their areas each year suffered the same defeats.

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) told the meeting taking the one-off sum from Arun's £7.5m of reserves would put some of the money to good use and still keep above the recommended minimum of £4m.

"Both towns have suffered instances of anti-social behaviour and both have significant cases of homelessness.

"We are sitting on £3.5m in our reserves doing absolutely nothing. That is not being prudent. It is bad financial planning," he said.

Cllr Daniel Purchese (LD, Beach) said: "What is the point of this council sitting on this cash year after year? That, to me, is completely unacceptable."

Giving councillors a small sum of money would benefit community activities in their areas.

"It is designed to provide members

with a dedicated ward budget to undertake improvements and works identified by their communities," he said.

Employing more apprentices would also provide a boost to people of all ages who were seeking new skills.

But the council's leader, Cllr Gill Brown (C, Aldwick E), said it was essential to keep adequate reserves to provide a buffer in very uncertain times for councils.

"This budget is part of our mediumterm financial plan to give economic security to the residents of this district and to show that, despite facing significant funding challenges, this council can deliver effective, accountable and efficient services.

"I would not happy for these balances to be eroded much further,"she said.

Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham E) told the Lib Dems they were wrong to unveil the ideas at the meeting.

"It's ridiculous. You do not give a chance for anybody to take this in. You do not give them a chance to consider it."

"This is all a ploy. It is like fake news all over again," he said. "You have got a lot of people who might be interested but you have totally stuffed it."

The meeting agreed to raise Arun's share of the council tax bill for a band D household by 2.96 per cent to £181.62.

This is less than a tenth of the total bill. The rest goes to West Sussex County Council, Sussex Police and the towns and parishes.

` Homes withdrawn PLANS for ten homes in Yapton were withdrawn before councillors had a chance to debate them.

Crayfern Homes had submitted proposals for the housing on land east of North End Road.

The scheme was due to be considered by Arun District Council's development control committee last week.

But its chairman, Cllr Ricky Bower, told the meeting the application had been removed from the agenda by the company.

It had been recommended for approval by the council's planning officers.

Firms support work to hotel MAJOR businesses around Bognor Regis have backed ambitious plans for a prominent former hotel.

Members of the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board have given their support to the scheme to bring new life to the decaying The Royal Hotel.

As reported, Metamorph Management wants to create a restaurant on the building's ground floor and convert the rest of the building - plus a two-storey extension - into 27 flats. It has submitted a planning application for the extensive work to Arun District Council.

David Myers, the regeneration board's advisor, has told the district council: "This iconic property on the seafront has been vacant for nearly three years and has fallen into a state of disrepair requiring substantial remedial and refurbishment investment.

"The board considers that the proposed development would significantly enhance this heritage asset within the conservation area compared to the existing appearance of the site.

"The proposal would secure the longterm future of this important building on the Bognor Regis seafront."

The board brings together leading representatives from the key public, private and community stakeholders in Bognor Regis and is a major driver in encouraging investment projects in the town.

As well as improving a landmark building, the comprehensive scheme for The Royal would add a new attraction for

the town, Mr Myers said.

"An important addition to the Bognor Regis tourism offer is a new destination restaurant set across two floors in the former club with 60 covers and a function room employing between 12-18 staff.

"The principle seating area is located on The Esplanade frontage with large bifold doors," he said.

"A two-storey extension in a slightly more contemporary design is planned above the restaurant which extenuates the horizontal detailing found on the hotel and the existing adjacent buildings on The Steyne.

"In conclusion, the board fully supports the planning application. The property is in a prominent location and would greatly benefit the conservation area and seafront whilst enhancing both the residents' and visitors' experience."

Bognor Regis Town Council has supported the plans. Its clerk, Glenna Frost, said in a letter to Arun: "Members commented on how the plans for this application had been well presented...

"It was agreed that this application is an excellent example of how a historic building can be preserved."

But three letters of objections to the proposals have been received by Arun from residents in The Steyne.

Among them were Rosalind Fitzpatrick Cooke and Xanthe Cooke. They wrote they were worried about the lack of parking for the new flats and the overshadowing which would be caused by the proposed extension.

Tributes to former council chairman's tireless efforts SADDENED Pagham councillors have paid tribute to their former chairman.

They spoke with fondness at Tuesday's meeting of the work which Ray Radmall put into Pagham Parish Council's activities and his likeable character which saw him always willing to help.

Mr Radmall passed away last Saturday, aged 72, at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, from motor neurone disease.

Cllr David Huntley, the council's deputy chairman, led a two minute silence in his honour. He said: "Even as his illness progressed, Ray still believe others were more worthy than himself. We should all remember such kindness.

"He was a man who dedicated his life to Pagham. He was fighting to the end.

"He was always keen to do the best for everybody and unwilling to look after himself to his detriment.

"I don't think we will ever find anybody so willing to give all their life like he did."

Cllr Dawn Hall, who is also an Arun district councillor for Pagham, said: "I think Ray had 'Pagham' running through his veins. I have worked with him for 20 years and thought very fondly of him."

She recalled his campaigns from the Chichester flood scheme alleviation scheme in the early 1990s, when he led residents who sought to ensure Pagham was unaffected by the project to divert excess floodwater from the city, to the village hall, with his predecessor, the late Jacquie Miles, protecting the beach and battling against large-scale housing plans.

"Every single campaign, he fought for

Pagham. He will long be talked about and long remembered.

"He was a good guy to have at a function because he could talk about anything and he could talk to everybody," she said.

"He will be missed by a lot of people and this council."

Mr Radmall had lived on the Pagham Beach estate for many years and was a parish councillor for some 20 years. He had chaired the local authority for 13 years.

This dedication led to him receiving the BEM in December 2017. His citation read: "He has totally absorbed himself in his love of Pagham and does all he can for the good of his community."

At the ceremony, Mr Radmall said: "I am deeply honoured and privileged to find myself with this beautiful medal. I am somewhat taken aback."

Mr Radmall worked closely with the Pagam housing campaigners in recent years. A statement from its committee said: "Ray will always be remembered for his dedication to the community of Pagham, particularly his 'hands on' philosophy to many aspects of life, installing benches, helping to repair roads, fighting for the beach to name just a few."

Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "Ray's sense of social responsibility, his compassion for others and his kindness epitomised why he was so fondly regarded in Pagham and more widely.

"We will all miss him deeply and Pagham will miss his role at the very centre and heart of life in the village."

Demolition work starts WORK has begun to demolish two historic buildings in Bognor Regis.

Contractors have put up scaffolding around 2-4 Waterloo Square and removed the windows ready to start knocking down the structures.

The activity on behalf of the buildings' leaseholder, B5 Ltd, came despite a direct appeal by Save Britain's Heritage to site owner Arun District Council to halt it.

Bognor Regis councillor Jan Cosgrove has also asked the government's secretary of state for housing communities and local government, James Brokenshire, to intervene in the matter.

The buildings, which were built before 1903, are not listed but are situated within a conservation area.

Save Britain's Heritage chief executive, Marcus Binney, said it had received a steady stream of emails and messages from residents of Bognor Regis concerned about the impending demolition.

He has urged Nigel Lynn, chief executive of Arun, to put a halt to the work for a week.

"As the council is the freeholder of the two buildings, we urge you in the name of your own

concerned citizens and your own heritage to put a halt to the demolition for seven days to allow a proper discussion of this situation which should never have unfolded as it has.

"These charming turn of the century buildings tell the story of Bognor's past and present, and are an important part of the town's history. They require investment to bring them back into viable use, not a bulldozer."

He said it was willing to pay for its engineer to inspect the buildings to assess their condition to see if they could be saved.

Mr Binney questioned the council's decision to issue a demolition order last month on the grounds the buildings had previously been occupied by squatters and were a health and safety hazard.

Cllr Cosgrove (L, Orchard) asked Mr Brokenshire to seek questions from Arun about the procedure which led to the demolition order.

Arun has said it believes the order was served correctly and is being actioned by those upon which it was being served.

"Arun has instructed a marketing company to develop a brand for The Arcade to promote it as a retailing destination to the benefit of the tenants' businesses," said Cllr Haymes (C, Yapton).

The council's managing agents, Savills, had been instructed to act on the matter and hold a meeting.

"This is so the council and Savills can better understand the leaseholders so the council can consider how best to ensure the future service charges remain affordable and to ensure the property is properly maintained and promoted," said Cllr Haymes.

The Arcade was built in 1901 by a Bognor Regis builder, William Tate.

It has been described as 'Edwardian seaside architecture'.

Vets receives Reminder to register to vote recognition

A LEADING West Sussex veterinary practice has been given a special accolade by a national body.

Arun Veterinary Group, which is based in Westergate and three other locations, has become the first practice in West Sussex to receive the hospital and emergency and critical care status from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Group joint owner Matt Gittings said: "Clinical excellence is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we choose to fully participate in this voluntary industry standards programme.

"Just as Ofsted inspects schools, the RCVS recognises excellence in veterinary practice and the fact that we have the most comprehensive accreditation in West Sussex is the best anniversary present (of the opening of its hospital in Storrington) we could hope for."

The group looks after the pet health of more than 5,000 owners and dates back to 1927.

Its other practices include Pulborough and Storrington.

RESIDENTS around Bognor Regis have been urged to make sure they can vote in this year's local elections.

All 52 seats on Arun District Council are up for grabs on May 2, along with those on Bognor Regis Town Council and the surrounding parishes.

Anyone who is not yet registered to vote has until April 12 to make sure they will receive a polling card.

Visit Arun's website at arun.gov.uk/ registration to register online or to request a registration form from the council's electoral registration officer, Nigel Lynn.

Mr Lynn said: "It is so important to use your vote and we are encouraging those who are eligible to vote to register now.

"This is really important if you have recently, or are about to turn 18, or if you haven't voted for some time.

"This is your chance to make your voice heard and influence the way local government works in your community."

Voters can choose to vote at a polling station or by a postal or proxy vote.

Applications to vote by post or to change an existing postal or proxy voting arrangement must be received by Arun by 5pm on April 15.

Leading company intends to open STARBUCKS has been named as another high profile tenant of a planned business development north of Bognor Regis.

The international chain of coffee houses is set to join Warburton’s and Aldi if the Salt Box scheme is approved.

As report, Landlink Estates has applied to Arun District Council for planning permission for the proposal next to the A29 Shripney Road.

The intention of Starbucks to become one of the occupiers – the Richmond Motor Group will be another - was revealed this week by the Coastal West Sussex Partnership.

Caroline Wood, the partnership’s director, praised the Salt Box proposals as one of the region’s leading development projects.

The partnership brings together senior

leaders from the public and private sectors to champion economic growth.

She said creating jobs on the Salt Box site fitted that vision. The land is part of the Enterprise Bognor Regis area for 70 hectares of land created by Arun District Council to boost the town’s economy.

It also includes another site on the opposite side of the A27 at Oldlands Farm.

Its 23.8ha would bring forward a mix of both commercial and retail development.

“It’s an exciting time for the area, with great new opportunities for businesses and a good number of new homes.

"There are some large development opportunities coming forward along the coast in Worthing, Shoreham, Chichester and Bognor Regis,” she added.

She highlighted two other sites in Lancing and Shoreham.

Cut in housing funding by county branded 'immoral' WEST SUSSEX County Council’s decision to cut millions from housingrelated support over the next two years has been branded ‘immoral’.

The service helps to fund homelessness charities such as Chichester-based Stonepillow and Bognor Housing Trust – and the council has been warned that cutting money would make the county ‘less safe’ and lead to an increase in deaths among rough sleepers.

The decision to reduce the £6.3m budget to £4.6m in 2019/20 and then to £2.3m in 2020/21 was defended by leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith, pictured above left, and Cllr Amanda Jupp, cabinet member for adults and health, at a meeting of the full council on Friday.

But Cllr Francis Oppler (Lib Dem, Bognor Regis E), pictured above right, said: “This council is choosing to make this particular cut of £4m from supported housing.

"It’s not being forced upon us – it is a choice. The decision for me is just immoral.”

Both Cllr Mrs Goldsmith and Cllr Mrs Jupp reminded members the county was

not the housing authority – with that duty falling to the districts and boroughs.

Pointing colleagues to the new Homelessness Reduction Act, Cllr Mrs Jupp said the districts and boroughs ‘cannot get away from their responsibilities'.

She added: “But we have always pledged to help and support whatever they want to do and as we move forward, because we recognise that we have a responsibility to that vulnerable group of people.”

She told the meeting some of the contracts involved had not been fit for purpose and it was the right time to review them.

The council had set aside £750k to help the charities cope during the transition to the new arrangements – though each would have to bid for a share.

She also announced that West Sussex had successfully bid for a share of the government’s rapid rehousing pathway funding, and should receive around £336,000.

Cllr Mrs Goldsmith told the meeting this year’s budget had been the ‘hardest yet’ to set. She added: “There’s no more give in the financial envelope.

It’s like maintaining a neighbour’s garden.

It’s a nice thing to do, keeps everything ship-shape and helps the relationship.

But when your income reduces and you have no cash to spare, despite best intentions you have to reduce or stop helping.

“And there’s the rub – no one likes it.

This is the case with the supported housing decision, which I know has been the hardest for all.”

Cllr Oppler said it was a ‘fantasy’ the districts and boroughs would be able to ‘pick up the baton’.

He added: "All of them are in financial difficulties of their own and do not have the infrastructure to be able to cope and deliver this service.

AN INSPIRING Bognor Regis woman whose health improved after a medical scare is determined to tackle obesity.

Clair Goddard leads HOOP UK's (Helping Overcome Obesity Problems) healthy hearts programme in the town.

The national charity has been awarded a £9,000 grant by Heart Research UK and Subway to help residents to lose weight.

The programme sees members of the community in the town, whose physical and mental health are affected by obesity, take part in a six-week healthy eating, cooking and cycling course to improve their heart health.

Clair has lost nine stone in nine years and wants to help others to do the same.

She said: "This grant is going to make a huge difference to people's lives.

"It will give them the purpose, the motivation and the opportunity to make long-term choices which may not have been there before.

"I want others to feel that sense of achievement I got after completing my first cycle ride.

"The joy of feeling my heart beating fast and knowing it was as a result of me putting myself out and exercising.

"It actually felt as though my whole self was bursting with emotions not known before. It was magical."

Clair changed her lifestyle after her life changed forever in 2010. She weighed 26 stone and was waiting in her GP's surgery for her yearly asthma review.

"I heard my name called out, and I stood up, and that's all I remember," she said.

"I was blue-lighted straight to

hospital where I stayed for two weeks. I feared for my life."

Clair was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep apnoea. After a few months, she knew she had to make a change and began to cycle regularly.

"I certainly didn't find it easy, and still don't," she said. "I set myself little goals to keep myself focused and motivated, and changed my diet by eating healthier meals and smaller portions."

Beth Clegg, the regional manager at HOOP Bognor Regis, said she hoped the grant would help to tackle the barriers which stopped some obese people taking the chance to live healthier lives.

"Men and women affected by obesity often isolate themselves from the surrounding community," she said.

"They fear that they might not live as long as someone of a healthy weight and they know they need to do something about that.

"They just don't feel that they can walk into a Zumba class or get on a bike.

"They don't feel supported. They feel stigmatised, have a low sense of selfworth and might not even be able to sustain a job."

Heart Research UK's healthy heart coordinator, Sarah Mirfin, said the grant was set to lead to healthier and happier lives for obese people.

"Obesity is one of the main preventable risk factors for coronary heart disease.

"We are thrilled to be able to support HOOP UK, an organisation that exists to tackle all the issues facing people battling with this condition," she said.

AN ALDWICK church will be taking part in a worldwide religious event next month.

Aldwick Baptist Church is hosting the Bognor Regis area's contribution to this year's World Day of Prayer.

The service will take place from 10.30am to 11.30am next Friday at the church in Gossamer Lane. It will be followed by refreshments.

The 2019 service has been prepared by the women of Slovenia. It is called Come - Everything is Ready.

A spokesman for the organisers said: "World Day of Prayer is

an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world - their hopes, their concerns, their prayers.

"The day of prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries.

One of the policies does allow for important trees to be affected where the benefits of a scheme are considered to be significant.

"This is the view that the planning authority has taken on the basis of the 100 per cent affordable nature of the proposal and the positive impact it will have for low income families trying to secure a home," said Mr Davis.

Other concerns raised by objectors included the risk of flooding caused by building the housing, loss of privacy for neighbouring properties and inadequate services such as schools and shops.

Felpham Parish Council raised no objection but did tell Arun it had several concerns and considerations.

A FURTHER 18 homes have been approved on a housing development in Felpham.

Arun District Council has backed the scheme for vacant land in Stanhorn Grove. This is within the large-scale Site Six scheme which has been built during the past decade.

The new homes will be built by Worthing Homes to provide affordable housing.

But the scheme for the near half an hectare of land was opposed by 49 letters of objection.

The council's tree officer, Mark Warwick, has also objected to the scheme because of the effect of the housing on three protected trees. He believed future harm could be caused to the roots of the trees along the site frontage and pressure in the future to trim some of them.

` Parking ban plan MOTORISTS could be stopped from parking at a junction in Middleton.

West Sussex County Council is planning to put double yellow lines on the south side of Elmer Road at its junctions with Southdean Drive and St Nicholas Lane.

A council statement: "It is reported that cars parking close to these junctions reduce visibility for emerging traffic, making exiting these junctions hazardous.

"The proposed scheme layout has been designed to prevent this parking while taking into account the location of a nearby bus stop and driveways."

The scheme was prioritised by the Joint Western Arun Area Committee.

All the college's pupils took part in its latest charity week to back three good causes - Macmillan Cancer Support, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

"It is definitely the charity committee's busiest time, but it is great fun and a chance to help raise as much money as possible for the charities we choose to support."

Another hit was the Felpham's Got Talent show. Plenty of tickets were sold to watch the star-studded performances.

Sixties sounds prove another hit f The Diamonds rehearsing for the show

FORMER Radio One DJ Mike Read helped a sell-out charity concert in Bognor Regis celebrate its tenth anniversary.

Mike performed a tribute to Buddy Holly with The Fenmen at the latest Back To The 60s event. He also jointly compered the night of nostalgia with regular host, Percy Newell.

The night on Saturday raised at least £5,000 for The Samaritans' Bognor Regis, Chichester and District branch.

"It's great that everyone is supporting this event and raising money for charity," he said.

He has been working with the Buddy Holly Education Foundation to help to keep the late singer's legacy alive and is writing a book about his spectacular but short-lived career.

"Although Buddy Holly sang in the 1950s,

a lot of bands in the sixties would have included his songs in their set list," said Mike. "They didn't just play sixties music.

"There was such a wide range of music in that decade anyway it's almost impossible to define it in a single style."

Mike took part in the charity concert which led to the start of the Back to the 60s night.

He also has fond memories of working in the Shoreline Club on Bognor Regis seafront in 1965-66.

"The club had The Caribbean Hotel on top of it and it was run by teenagers for teenagers. It was absolutely amazing.

"You wouldn't get it off the ground now but it showed me there was life outside the Home Counties where I lived," he said.

Bognor Regis had a vibrant music scene in the sixties and many of the bands reunited for the concert at the Riverside Caravan Centre.

Diamonds' drummer Terry Slade said: "This night is great. It keeps the original sixties vibe going. It's lovely to be up on stage playing to a full house."

The other bands taking part included Johnny Devlin, The Southbeats and The Fenmen with Roy Haines.

Roy, who organised the night, said some 450 enjoyed the occasion.

"This is another successful concert. We had raised £50,000 for various local good causes before this year's concert.

"There is something about sixties music that appeals to people. Some of them come back year after year," he said.

Forest folk create plenty of interest TOASTED marshallows, tree decorations and carved gipsy flowers were the results of the latest community activity in a Bognor Regis open space.

The Forest Knights brought their range of outdoor fun to the Hothamton Sunken Garden on Wednesday.

The first two hours of their attendance saw some 100 young people spend part of their half-term holiday learning the traditional skills.

Forest Knights owner Wayne Jones said: "This is all about slowing them down, getting them outdoors and back to nature.

"It is also allowing them to start valuing the garden rather than choosing to ignore it.

"It is quite rewarding to come back, after being here in October, and seeing a lot of young people enjoying themselves."

The visit by Forest Knights was again arranged by the Bognor Community Gardeners. Its members spend a lot of time tending to the Arun District Councilowned site between Waterloo Square and the Hothamton car park.

The area has gained a reputation in recent years for anti-social behaviour.

Founder Kim Davis said: "This is all about getting the community to use the garden. This seems to be doing the trick and we want to put on as many events like this as possible.

"Holding days like today changes the atmosphere here instantly. We have to have a way of getting people here.

"Some log cabins for community groups, with a lot of responsible adults around, staging events, will make a big difference."

"There is a lot that can be done to this garden to make it better which will be

a lot cheaper than the £3m Arun want to spend on the Pavilion Park.

"Opening it up so everyone can use, with gaps in the walls, would be one way. All it would take is £1m, I would think."

Two of the young people who joined in the activities were ten-year-olds, IndigoRose Heart and Mia Teasdale.

Indigo-Rose's mother, Harmonie Heart, of Rose Green, said: "This is getting the children outdoors and interacting with each other and the environment."

Aldwick resident Julia Teasdale, Mia's mother, said: "This stops the children playing indoors and also be part of the community."

` Hall's new panels NEARLY 100 solar panels have been installed on Pagham Village Hall, pictured below.

The energy-generating systems has been placed on the building's large south-facing roof by its trustees.

Philip Coleman, the trust's chairman, said the location in Pagham Road on the outskirts of a town with the best sunshine record on the English mainland was ideal.

"The trustees decided to invest some cash reserves in a sustainable energy system in order to reduce the hall's carbon footprint and to reduce future electricity bills and generate an income through the feed-in tariff, which is paid for exporting electricity to the grid.

"The 87 solar panels form a 23.6Kw photovoltaic system, with estimated feedback within six years, based on predicted performance and feed-in tariff calculations," he said.

The project was supported by a grant of £9,879 from the Inspire Leisure Grant Fund, operated by Action in Rural Sussex, which met just under a third of the cost.

Eco council has seen light DAYLIGHT is heating Felpham Community Hall.

The building’s owner, Felpham Parish Council, has installed 80 light sensitive panels to enable it to generate its own power.

The installation had saved almost £100 in heating bills in its first three weeks and led to the 1.41 tons of trees being planted by the installation company.

The panels were generating 5.1 kilowatts per hour out of a maximum of 15kwh on a cloudy winter’s morning last week to add to its total of 512kwh.

The information is displayed on a screen in the hall's foyer.

Cllr Dave Smart, the parish council’s chairman, said: “Having the panels makes economic senses as well as green sense.

“This is a cost-effective system.

We establish it will pay back all its costs in six years.”

The panels on the western facing roof of the centre in Meaden Way cost £14,000. The money was provided by the developer of the surrounding Blakes Mead housing estate as part of the granting of planning permission for the development several years ago.

“This work has not come out of the pockets of our residents,” said Cllr Smart.

“That was important to us. If we were going to do it, it made sense to do it now because an incentive scheme to install the panels ends in March.”

The funding has paid for the £6,000 spent

on sound insulation panels for the centre’s main hall.

These have been placed on its ceiling and around its walls to deaden the effect of the previously bare surfaces.

“Because this was such as cavernous hall, it had a bad echo,” Cllr Smart said.

“You could clap your hands and it would bounce around the walls three or four times.

“Now, you can hardly hear an echo. It has greatly improved the hall.”

The parish council moved into the building nearly 18 months ago. It is responsible for most of its facilities –

which also include two meeting rooms and a parish office and meeting room - apart from the changing rooms and football pitches.

These are under Arun District Council’s control.

Similarly, the surrounding grounds are also the responsibility of Arun.

Drug couple to pay £1.3m f Christopher Young

FORMER Bognor Regis couple Christopher Young and Tracy Robinson have been ordered to pay back more than £1million from their illegal drug operation.

Sussex Police have been granted confiscation orders against Young and Robinson to require them to repay £1.31million following their sentencing last April for the production of controlled drugs, money laundering and fraud offences.

Granted by Portsmouth Crown Court, it is one of the biggest such orders issued after a Sussex Police investigation.

Detective Inspector Mark O'Brien, of the force's economic crime unit, said: "This was a significant confiscation of money and assets which, in time, will benefit our policing resources and communities in Sussex through the asset recovery incentivisation scheme.

"Often criminals think they are untouchable by the law and act with impunity, occasionally being content to serve a prison sentence if apprehended.

"The fact that we have seized and now confiscated their assets will impact on and, hopefully, deter Young and Robinson from following a criminal lifestyle when they eventually leave prison."

Funds seized by the courts through Proceeds Of Crime Act confiscation or cash forfeiture orders go to the government's exchequer. However, a proportion of this is returned to law enforcement. This amount is distributed

equally between the police and crime commissioner and the Chief Constable.

Sussex Police employs financial investigators and financial intelligence officers using some of this money to continue the work to seize criminal assets. The rest supports community crime reduction and diversion projects.

Young, 56, and Robinson, 52, formerly of Marshall Avenue, set up a secret steroid 'laboratory' and production site at Howard's Acre in Hook Lane, Aldingbourne.

They were sentenced on April 27 last year. Young was given a total of nine years' in jail on four counts of money laundering a total of £343,382, possessing, producing and possessing with intent to supply class C drugs, and with income support/ employment support allowance fraud, tax credit fraud and council tax benefit fraud.

Robinson was given three years in jail, having been convicted of seven counts of money laundering a total of £448,816, and with income support/employment support allowance fraud, tax credit fraud and council tax benefit fraud.

She was found not guilty of money laundering £30,000 in cash.

The couple's assets included two properties in Sussex, several vehicles, property interests in Bulgaria, cash seized from their home address and at least 17 bank accounts.

The previous May, detectives raided the lab and found Young with controlled drugs with a street value of more than £500,000.

Slipper swap PEOPLE in the Post area can get involved in a Slipper Swap during March.

As part of the county council’s investment in falls prevention this winter, elderly residents across the county are being invited to trade in their old slippers for a brand new pair, free of charge.

THe new initiative comes amid new figures released that show there were 4,772 emergency hospital admissions due to falls in people aged 65 and over in West Sussex during 2017/18.

Ill-fitting slippers, or those which are beyond their best, pose a real risk of causing a fall.

Treating hip fractures as a result of a fall is estimated to cost the NHS in West Sussex more than £20 million a year.

THe county council has already invested more than £750,000 in a new programme of work being delivered by Sussex Community Foundation Trust to deploy specialist falls champions across the county to help those most at risk of a fall.

THis funding came as part of a £3.3 million government grant, ring-fenced to help ease winter pressures on adult social care and health services.

County council cabinet member for adults and health, Amanda Jupp, said: “Having a fall can have devastating consequences, not only a loss of independence but it can impact on confidence leading to social isolation.

“THere are a number of really simple things that residents can do to reduce their risk of suffering a fall, but those old tatty slippers you keep tripping over are a good place to start.

"We are very excited to announce the launch of our first Slipper Swap next month, and I would urge anyone who feels they may be at risk of falling to pop along, with your old slippers, to the event where they will be able to find out more information on how to keep themselves safe.”

Jools Holland supports free music lessons in Post area A FREE national event to encourage everyone in the UK to start making music is coming to Chichester and Bognor Regis next month.

Supported by Jools Holland, and run by charity Music for All, the 2019 Learn to Play Day will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, and will see music shops, teachers, venues and schools throughout the county partner with leading musical instrument brands to offer thousands of free music lessons.

Post readers can enjoy the free sessions at: Mikes Music Workshop in Bognor Regis and St George's Church (run by the Royal School of Church Music) in Chichester.

Since being launched eight years ago, the Learn to Play Day initiative has helped thousands of people pick up and play a musical instrument.

Held in partnership with the Musicians’ Union, the ‘Take It Away’ scheme and Making Music, the Learn

to Play Day initiative has been growing in popularity with a record 10,000 free lessons held during last year’s event.

WEST SUSSEX County Council says it has approved a 'balanced budget' for 2019/20.

Councillors have approved net expenditure of £575.5 million to deliver key services.

THe council also agreed significant investments to support five key priority areas.

THese include: • £6.1 million - additional new investment in children and young people’s services • £7.3 million - investment in adults and health.

• Additional investment - special support centres to help keep students with special educational needs and disabilities in mainstream schools with their peers and in their local area.

• £3 million - additional investment in extra care schemes to help keep older people living independently for longer.

• £44.5 million - investment in a sustainable energy programme which includes the installation of solar farms and battery storage on unused council land.

• £5 million - programme to create community hubs and protect key services by bringing them together under one roof.

• £13.8 million - investment in corporate and fire fleet vehicles and £1.8 million in specialist fire equipment to support the fire and rescue service.

• £22.5 million - investment in digital infrastructure supporting businesses and rural communities.

Since 2010, the council has saved more than £200m and in the same period,

government funding has been cut by £145m.

THe county council faced a challenging financial gap of £45.4m for 2019/20 alone, due to increasing demand on social care services and a continued reduction in central government funding.

As a result, it identified £23.4millionworth of savings across a number of services.

THe remaining amount has been found through a council tax increase of 4.99 per cent, which includes a dedicated 2 per cent to fund adult social care.

THis increase means an additional £1.27 per week for the average Band D household.

Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: "Despite the difficult financial challenges we face as a county council, this budget includes significant investment in a number of priority areas for the communities we are here to serve.

"We're making a clear commitment to continue exploring new and innovative ways to generate income and do more with the money we have.”

Jeremy Hunt, cabinet member for finance and resources, said: "THis budget is balanced, robust and sustainable which supports the five key priorities in our West Sussex Plan.

"It is a budget that supports our residents and ensures that we continue to provide our many excellent services."

Members of the county council formally agreed the final budget and the level of council tax at heir meeting on Friday.

Care home launches a special care campaign

Following the success of last year’s campaign, ‘You Can Care’, Home Instead Senior Care is looking to recruit 60 caregivers to join its team. Since launching the campaign in 2018, the company has grown by 30 per cent over the past 12 months.

Skills for Care, an independent charity

with more than 18 years’ experience in workforce development, estimates that eight per cent of roles in adult social care are vacant, which gives an average of approximately 110,000 vacancies at any one time.

THese statistics suggest the sector is struggling to keep up with demand as the population ages.

Speaking of the campaign, Simon McGee, owner of Home Instead Chichester, says: "When we launched the 'You Can Care' campaign last year, we saw an upsurge in interest from people looking to join the care sector.

"As our population continues to age, we are continuing to build our team with

Sir, The letter and photo of an overflowing dog bin, in the Bognor Regis Post (Issue 145) raises several questions: • What happens to the mountains of dog waste? Does it go to landfill? Is it incinerated? In Malvern, dog poo has been used to power a street light. What a light bulb moment!

• Who pays for the disposal? The council tax means that nondog owners are paying like it or not. Is that fair?

Please do not immediately blame the council who are probably doing their best to cope with such a huge number of dogs in the area.

And please spare a thought for the person who clears all this smelly mess and who deserves a medal.

Perhaps clairvoyance is the last resort as Arun District Council doesn't seem to putting forward anything sensible.

It seems to be ignoring the Sir Richard Hotham regeneration project, even though the government has given planning permission.

Arun's regeneration scheme? You must be joking. It can't even develop a toilet on our seafront.

One thing Cllr Hitchins did get right. Let's wait for the May elections.

ChoirFest returns ONE OF the biggest choir festivals in Sussex makes a return to the Regis Centre in Bognor next month.

Choirfest, now in its third year, is back bigger and better with ten choirs now confirmed to perform over the weekend of March 16 and 17.

THe festival, a joint collaboration between West Sussex-based Arun Arts and Bersted Arts, is a noncompetitive event that welcomes a diverse range of community choirs from Hampshire across to East Sussex. THe aim is to bring together some of the region’s talented but otherwise unknown community choirs and showcase their talents to the community without the pressure of competing against each other.

One of the event organisers, Will Hackett, said: “THe fact that it is non-competitive is one of the main attractions of this festival, and what makes it different from many other similar events.

“Over the last few years we’ve discovered and showcased so many talented choirs from across the south that wouldn’t otherwise have been given a platform or an opportunity to perform in an event and at a venue such as this.”

After an afternoon of rehearsing and networking, each of the choirs takes to the stage to perform in front of a packed audience in the Alexandra THeatre before all coming together on stage in a showstopping finale.

New for this year is the ChoirFest Scratch Choir, perfect for anyone who doesn’t belong to a choir but would like to try it out.

Taking place on the Saturday of the festival, members of the public are invited to form their very own choir, from scratch. Under the expert direction of a professional musical director, a group of newbies will come together to learn and rehearse a number of songs during the day before taking to the stage with the other community choirs to perform in front of an audience.

Will said: “THis will be a challenging but really fun experience for anyone who has always wanted to sing in a choir but perhaps hasn’t found the confidence or the time needed to commit to regular practice.

“THey’ll receive coaching from a professional West End musical director and all the encouragement they need so they are fully prepared for their debut performance in the evening.”

THe Sixteen is celebrating its 40th anniversary since being founded by Harry Christophers, who still conducts the ensemble, and if it can continue to transport audiences across the centuries with such consummate skill, power and beauty, future generations will be fortunate.

Although in such an ensemble piece it is invidious to pick out the soloists, tenors Mark Dobell and Jeremy Budd gave spine-tingling renditions of clarity and passion, especially in the responses. With these, it was refreshing to have other parts of the cathedral used as platforms rather than leaving the audience at the back of the nave feeling cut off from much of the atmosphere.

Sopranos Katy Hill and Charlotte Mobbs performed with emotional sensitivity in their solos and duets while special mention should also go to

The Jigantics DESCRIBING themselves as a musical roots stew, combining the world's finest ingredients, one of the UK and 'Nu Folk' music's most arresting bands, THe Jigantics, will be returning to Selsey next month.

Selsey Folk and Music Club will be hosting the band, who are part of a growing group of contemporary artists appealing to a wide range of music followers increasingly looking beyond conventional musical stereotypes, and just enjoying a fusion of great songs, stunning harmonies and fine musicianship.

In this case, it's a genre-defying mix of roots, blues, trad, country and then some. It would seem to be an ongoing journey, as the band continue to explore all the options open to their multi-

instrumental, multi-talented personnel.

Every member, including drummer/percussionist Martin Fitzgibbon, contributes harmonies and occasionally lead vocals to the mix. THe instruments get passed around with Mark Cole swopping squeeze boxes for mandolin, Keith THompson changing from vocals, acoustic guitars and blues harp and Sarah Kelly on vocals and ukulele.

SECRETS of the royal family, from Queen Victoria to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, could well be revealed when expert Hugo Vickers gives a public lecture.

Among many books written by Hugo, who is known as a biographer, royal historian and commentator, include lives of the Queen Mother, Princess Andrew of Greece and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

He is frequently in demand for commentaries on major royal occasions including the weddings of Prince Charles and Diana, the Duke of York, Earl of Wessex, Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex, and the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Queen Mother.

He has acted as historical adviser on films including THe King’s Speech and Victoria & Abdul -in which he was also an extra - while also enjoying attacking the many inaccuracies in television hit THe Crown.

In the talk at Havant, Hugo will discuss the business of writing royal biographies.

Set sail for Mary Rose CHART a course and set sail for the Mary Rose this half-term to see Henry VIII’s favourite warship reunited with key parts for the first time in almost 500 years!

THe ship’s stem – a crucial structural piece of timber that curves upwards from the keel to define its bow - eluded underwater archaeologists until 2003.

Having undergone excavation and conservation since then, the rediscovered stem can now finally be seen in the Weston Ship Hall, at the heart of the Mary Rose experience.

THis exciting addition to the awardwinning museum finally allows you to see the length and curve of the ship’s bow, adding a crucial piece of the Mary Rose jigsaw. Also unveiled are the never-beforeseen ship’s pump and another of her huge anchors, astonishing additions to one of the largest collections of Tudor objects in the world.

THe display of these essential artefacts coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Mary Rose Trust. Formed in 1979, with THe Prince of Wales as its president, the Mary

Rose Trust works tirelessly to conserve and display the remains of the Mary Rose and her objects. THe Mary Rose had been the pride of Henry VIII before she sank fighting a French invasion fleet during the Battle of the Solent in 1545.

Dr Alexzandra Hildred, head of research and curator of ordnance and human remains, joined the project in 1979 and has been part of the Mary Rose story ever since. Alexzandra comments: “It is difficult to perceive that 40 years has passed since the formation of the trust, it has gone in the blink of an eye.” Alexzandra said reuniting the newly conserved stem with the Mary Rose was "an apt way to celebrate this important anniversary and demonstrates our continuing fulfilment of the objectives of the trust.”

Prize winning night for poet Open Mic Poetry Jubilee Hall, New Park Centre, New Park Road, Chichester PO19 7XY Wednesday, February 27, 7.30pm HEADING the bill at Open Mic Poetry is prize-winning Sussex poet Janet Sutherland, who will be treating audiences to poems from her latest collection, Home Farm, which has just been published by Shearsman books.

In her fourth collection, Janet explores the farm in Wiltshire where she grew up. It is a poetry of landscape and water, of birds, beasts and other creatures, of life lived cheek by jowl with death, of memory and forgetfulness - all of it rooted in place.

Janet has had a varied career and since 2001 she has lived in Lewes, East Sussex. As well as pursuing her writing, she works part-time for Relate in Brighton as an administrator.

THe trio comprises Helen Sills on violin, Michael Nebe on cello and Alan Brown on piano. THey will be playing Mozart's Piano Trio in B Flat, Op. 502 and Turina's Piano Trio No. 2 in B minor Op. 77.

Helen Sills read music at Nottingham University, followed by an MA in baroque music, and then gained a PhD from Birmingham University on the music of Igor Stravinsky. She studied the violin with Kenneth Piper at the Royal College of Music and later with Peter THomas.

Michael Nebe has toured the UK, Germany, Holland, USA, Canada and Australia, where he held guest professorships and recorded for radio and television.

THey enjoyed enthusiastic receptions in Worthing last February and at the Alexandra THeatre, in Bognor Regis, in July.

THe band comprises more than 50 talented musicians who, between them, boast a total of 1,800 years’ service to Queen and country. It was founded in 2006, on the

suggestion of Major Paddy Dunn and with Captain Ted Whealing as the first director of music.

From the first 35 musicians who turned up to an inaugural meeting at HMS Excellent on Whale Island in Portsmouth, the band progressed by leaps and bounds to their debut performance in September, 2007, at the Royal Marines Association's annual reunion. Today, the band has a programme of engagements across the country, fulfilling them all to the highest standards of musicianship.

At Worthing, they will give a programme of popular marches, big band sounds, musical theatre, music from film, radio and television shows as well as the classics.

THe concert will also feature a typical Royal Marines finale. THis concert is in aid of THe Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund with ticket prices starting at £13.50.

Heath Quartet Since his acclaimed Wigmore Hall debut, Alan Brown has appeared at many venues throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, the Channel Islands, Australia, South Korea and Japan. He has a repertoire of more than 45 concertos and has played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the Virtuosi of England.

Entry to the lunchtime concerts, which last approximately 50 minutes, is free.

Visitors are welcome to come and go as they please, coffee is available and food can be eaten.

quartet won the 2016 Gramophone Chamber Award for their recording of the complete string quartets of Sir Michael Tippett, and in May, 2013, became the first ensemble in 15 years to win the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award.

Hollywood Rome comes to Chichester The Novium Museum Tower Street, Chichester, PO19 1QH www.thenovium.org Exhibition opens in April AN EXCITING new exhibition coming to THe Novium Museum this spring will bring Hollywood to Chichester, for an entirely new take on Ancient Rome.

Hollywood Rome: Reel Life in the Ancient World will feature stunning costumes, props and posters from some big name modern epics such as Gladiator, Centurion, King Arthur and Ben Hur. THis will be the first time the touring exhibition, curated by Pop-Up Exhibitions, has been shown.

THe exhibition will interpret the films in the context of the history and archaeology that have inspired filmmakers, presenting historical figures in a way that will connect with modern audiences and fans of historical cinema.

It will include interactive and handling elements, original cinema posters and banners and fabric hangings used in Gladiator. THere will also be a selection of memorabilia from classic 'sword and sandal' flicks of the 1950s and 1960s.

"THis will be a colourful exhibition with something for all the family," says Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester. "THe Romans are always a popular topic with children and adults alike, and we hope visitors will have fun as well as wanting to find out more about Roman history."

Stephanie THorndyke, manager of THe Novium Museum, said: "We are always looking at innovative ways to bring history to life. By tapping into people's love of cinema, and looking at some of the big stories and legends that have made their way onto the screen, we can link with our own rich Roman heritage."

landscape designer, John Brookes MBE. Recounting the site’s history, which was part of an estate owned by Lord Denmans in the late-1800’s before being requisitioned by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn van Paasschen, chairman of the JohnBrookes Denmans Foundation, said that Joyce and her husband grew vegetables and cut-flowers at Denmans for the market in Covent Garden.

Joyce later converted it to a unique ornamental garden which John Brookes redesigned during his 35+ years at Denmans.

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

Work on renovating structures in the intimate contemporary garden is well

under way and other renovations are on the calendar. The past year’s pruning and replanting is evident everywhere.

Gwendolyn said that “visitors are consistently impressed which is encouraging.”

With three full-time gardeners, Gwendolyn praised her “amazing” team for their hard work and the creation of a happy atmosphere to which regular visitors return time and again.

For those who want to take home a little of the Denmans magic, seeds and plants are sold among other wares at the gift shop, while it and the popular tea rooms are open without visiting

Summing up the charm of Denmans, Gwendolyn said: “It really is an incredibly special place with its own soul which people connect to.”

Awards are well deserved for Indian fine dining restaurant

AWARD-WINNING restaurants don't always live up to their reputation but one which does is Cardamom Bay. When my husband and I visited on a Wednesday evening, it was a good sign that a number of the tables were occupied by a range of customers other couples, a family party and friends having a get-together - in the smart, comfortable, dining area with starched white linen cloths and friendly, attentive staff.

Straight away, we were offered drinks - we chose Cobra beer and a lemonade - and poppadums while trying to choose from the extensive menu. THe light and crisp poppadums were not in the least oily and were accompanied with a mixed pickle, mango chutney, minted plain yoghurt and finely sliced onion.

Sharing a starter of lamb samosas, also available as a vegetarian option, we found these were well filled and meaty with just a slight kick to alert the taste buds ready for mains.

THe premises in Queensway, right in the heart of Bognor's town centre, were expanded two years ago and now offers dining both at lunchtimes and evenings.

Takeaway is also available and groups are welcome to make enquiries for parties.

Lal added: "We use only the freshest, local ingredients where possible and source all our meat from a sustainable supplier. We strive to make your dining experience a memorable event."

Helpfully for customers who are not too familiar with the ingredients of Indian cuisine, full descriptions are given on the menu, including indications of the spicy heat of dishes, but if you are a fan of sub-continent favourites are all here.

Although eight varieties of classics, such as Madras curry, are listed plus other curries, biryani and tandoori, the house specials looked the most interesting mains. My husband opted for the fish special grill while I went for the Jal Jal balti, which comprised succulent chicken breast cooked in a sauce with red peppers and tomatoes.

With salmon, sea bass and king prawns marinated in a yoghurt thick sauce, cooked in a Tandoori clay oven and served with salad, the fish grill was a generous and tasty plateful but we supplemented it with special fried rice and traditional sag aloo of potatoes and spinach.

Although we were far too full from the previous two courses, we couldn't resist iced desserts of a mango-flavour kulfi and a caramel ice cream.

It all added up to a satisfying, good value meal with flavours of the East in modern plush surroundings, justifying its reputation as one of the most popular Indian restaurants in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area.

Lal Hussain, who runs the restaurant with his brothers, says the basis for its continuing popularity is his passion for life through cooking.

"Over 30 years, I worked my way through the business from Bus Boy to chef. My view of the world as a chef led to me opening Cardamom Bay.

"Together, with my brothers, Kamal and Jahangir, we have created a menu and environment that has been voted the ‘Best Restaurant in Bognor Regis’ by Trip Advisor three times, due to our incredible food and atmosphere.

Although there is a menu of main courses and pasta dishes, including child-size portions, most people go to enjoy the choice of freshly-made tapas, a number of which have a Middle Eastern slant as well as traditional Spanish dishes.

A tapas banquet for four people at £19.50 is popular for groups with a selection across the menu but my husband and I, with help from Beyhan, settled in comfortable chairs, made our own choices from the vegetarian, meat and chicken, and fish and seafood sections, washed down with a house white pinot grigio and a lemonade.

Key to the happy ambience of the converted wine cellar is the philosophy of owner Beyhan Cumali who treats everyone as guests rather than customers.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last

year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Loyal patrons and friends from her Selsey restaurant of the same name, which she has run since 2015, filled the tables for the two launch evenings and since then word has gradually spread about the revival of an old favourite of the Chichester eating-out scene.

15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

Community News & Views fit A resort g for a Kin NINETY years ago, King George V and Queen Mary came to Bognor for their historic visit.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Monday, February 25 - It was stated officially at Craigweil House last night that the King again had a good day.

The weather during the weekend, however, was unpleasant.

Rain fell for many hours on Saturday, while yesterday there was no sunshine, the air was damp, and in the morning the rain returned in the form of drizzle.

On Saturday afternoon, the Queen drove into Bognor where she visited several shops, among them being those of two dealers in antiques.

She also made a call at the Princess Mary Rest Home for Women, which was built as a memorial to the Duchess of Teck and was opened by her Majesty in 1900. The Queen was cheered by crowds of people who gathered in the streets.

Yesterday morning, her Majesty, accompanied by Sir Derek Keppel, Sir Clive Wigram, Colonel Reginald Seymour, and Lady Bertha Dawkins attended the service at Bognor Parish Church.The service was conducted by the vicar, the Rev Kenneth Clarke.

In the afternoon the Queen went by motor-car to Stansted Park, Emsworth, the Sussex residence of Lord Bessborough, where she made a short stay.

Dr Woods was at Craigweil House on Saturday and applied the luminous ray treatment to the King.

FLATS are to be built on an empty site next to a Bognor Regis community building, pictured above.

Arun District Council has received planning permission to develop the land for four flats. The scheme was backed by the council's development control committee last Wednesday.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said: "Everybody in the centre has been consulted on this and they are quite happy to work with the council on this proposal."

Council planning officer Dan Vick told the committee one letter of objection to the scheme had been received from a neighbouring resident.

One of the reasons for opposition to the planned two-storey building on the land of 0.08 hectares stemmed from the loss of privacy from an overlooking window.

But Mr Vick said: "We have considered the impact on the character of the area and the neighbourhood amenities.

"We recommend the application should be approved subject to the property's side elevation on the first floor having obscured glass to avoid any overlooking.

"The site is between a two-storey low-pitched community centre building and a pair of two-storey side gabled semidetached houses.

"The design/appearance and the choice of materials is considered to be acceptable.

"The streetscene shows the new building will be 1.8m higher than the community centre and 0.5m higher than the adjacent dwellings. The difference is not considered to be significant given spacious gaps between neighbouring buildings.

"The proposal results in a loss of small trees and shrubs on the site. Those to the rear are unaffected and the plans show the small tree on the front adjacent to the community centre building will be retained."

Bognor Regis Town Council had no objection to the scheme.

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to ensure Pagham's big summer event runs smoothly.

The helpers are needed for various roles at the latest Pagham on Parade event.

This will take place on August 18 at Pagham Village Hall.

Initial arrangements have included a grand raffle, classic cars and motor bikes, children's fun fair, refreshments bar, barbecue, music, charity and craft stalls, and various displays.

There is also the possibility of an appearance by a wizard.

More activities are being discussed to be potentially arranged in the coming months.

the title of Pagham VE/VJ Commemoration Day 60 years after the end of the Second World War. It was described as having vintage military vehicles and motor cycles in the car park with stalls and displays in the hall.

Everyone was encouraged to wear period clothes from the forties.

The day was put on by the parish council as an attraction in the summer to contrast with the well-established pram race on Boxing Day. The event, pictured above, was so successful it was decided to stage it annually.

The title of Pagham on Parade was adopted in 2006, from a suggestion by then Cllr Chris Burchett , because the second year was not going to be a continuation of the VE and VJ celebrations.

The title also included a strong emphasis on military vehicles but that has been shortened over the years to enable the event to develop in various ways.

A host of other activities has been lined up for the day.

These include author Helen Rebello talking about her book, The Magical Unfolding, West Sussex youth cabinet member Ellie Roberts and a community tea party and marketplace.

The first 50 women to attend will receive a free signed copy of The Magical Unfolding.

CURRENT and former pupils of the Regis School of Music will be performing the next concert at Bognor Regis Music Club.

The line-up for tomorrow's performance includes cellists James Dew, 16, and Kenji Luc, 17, who are playing to a high standard.

James studies at the Junior Royal College of Music and has gained a place in the National Youth Orchestra, the world's premier orchestra for young people. Kenji studies at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester.

Founder and inspiration of the Regis School of Music, Sasha Levtov, said: "We very much appreciate this invitation as it gives our young musicians an excellent opportunity to share their music with an appreciative audience, to build up their confidence and to gain valuable stage experience.

"Events like this are the best possible reward to young musicians for all their efforts in practising and perfecting their performances.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to meet with members of another friendly music society dedicated to the art of music and, together, to encourage a new generation of musicians."

The concert will take place at 7pm at the music club's venue at 2 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

Entry on the night is £6 for members, £8 visitors, £4 students, and free for children under 12.

Chris Coote, chairman of Bognor Regis Music Club, said: "We are pleased to have such a good relationship with the Regis School of Music and are particularly looking forward to this special concert.

A POTENTIAL hat-trick is set to be celebrated by a team of Arun District Council officials.

Employees in the local authority's local land charges have been nominated in three categories of this year's Land Data local land charges awards for excellence.

The competition celebrates the achievements of council local land charges departments across England and Wales in the past 12 months.

Arun's workers have been put forward for the local authority searches team of the year award, best customer experience award and customer satisfaction for local authority searches.

This is the latest of a series of the awards in which Arun has featured prominently.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, the council's cabinet member for technical services, said: "To hear that our land charges team have been nominated again this year after great success at the awards over the past three years, is testament to the commitment and hard work that the team demonstrate in their daily duties."

The awards are in their 12th year and are held annually.

They are the only national awards to celebrate the work and achievements of council local land charges departments.

These carry out the land and property searches required for conveyancing transactions in England and Wales.

The overall winners will be announced at an awards dinner on March 4 in Birmingham.

Caravan stays have moved on from the 1900s The Bognor Regis area has a history of the holiday accommodation from the early years of the 20th century WHEN planning holidays, there are many types of accommodation available, hotels, holiday camps etc but a simple caravan holiday has always been very popular.

From the 1940s, we saw the introduction of static caravans, made just from hardboard and, as you can imagine, they warped very easily.

They had gas lights, a single gas burner and were without a bathroom or running water.

Eventually, this type of accommodation increased during the 1960s when there was a boom in this type of holiday. Mass production occurred about this time, and it was possible to buy a caravan for £600 (the price of a Mini car at the time).

As the years went by, improvements came along with the introduction of aluminium panels and even bigger and better caravans.

You still had to go to a shower block, but flushing toilets arrived and finally showers were an optional extra.

But what of caravans here in our area? We have had many sites and memories over the years of our caravan sites, and I am sure many of you will recall sites which I do not mention.

The press regularly mentioned sites and at one time in the 1960s a council meeting was asked by an owner if they could increase the number of their caravans.

This was rejected as there were already 5,000

caravans in the town and the council felt this was sufficient. Some of the sites have long since gone, but some still survive. One such has been mentioned by many visitors and that is the Riverside Caravan Centre which was started by Percy H May and John D May after he was invalided out of the Navy.

They opened the site in 1954 when there was only an ash road and a small number of caravans. One visitor recalled: “We then spent every evening in the Riverside club playing darts and cards (for matchsticks) and making half a pint last all night (funds were very limited at the time as I was an apprentice).”

Not unusual was the memory of meeting a girl, who then went on to become a wife, and continuing to return for their annual holidays.

In 1807 ,Pagham was noted as a 'place affords no bathing, but if you are induced to spend a few weeks, and possess sufficient strength and courage, you could commit yourselves to the arms of Neptune, unperceived, and with no less safety and delight than at Bognor'.

Unlike other parts of our area from 1907 the first caravan had arrived when it was built for Miss Carre, who paid £1.50 a year. The growth of these caravans resulted in the large popular Church Farm Holiday Centre. The complex today, of course, dominates any aerial view of the village.

There is mention of Second World War use, such as a wartime firing range while one area in the complex was known as a ballast hole!

Church Farm is shown on some early view postcards as being just a few caravans situated around the edge of a number of fields. This site contains more than 900 mobile homes.

The centre is today advertised on the internet as being 'close to the beach, with a backdrop of the South Downs. Church Farm is perfect for nature lovers with a pretty lagoon and its own nature reserve teeming with birds and wildlife'.

Many of the smaller sites were in the surrounding areas of Pagham, Nyetimber, Shripney and North Bersted. In a 1968 directory, there is a record of Marigold Caravan Park, Mill Farm, Mundays, Orchard, Polars and Rose Green sites. I also found reference in a 1960s directory for a caravan builder named Bersted Caravan Works on the Shripney Road.

Some of the buildings still exist.

One holidaymaker recalls his caravan holiday and activities: "We travelled from Surrey and were eager to spot the sea. We always stayed at a caravan site in Rose Green run/owned by a man that we called in the family ‘Mister Bleach’ – not his real name of course but as close as I was able to get to Mister Leach.

"I think his wife and son also were involved in the site’s management. I remember that the caravans were always small and a bit primitive; they had gas lights! It was a skill that my parents learned over the years to be able to light them without shattering at least one mantle in the week.

"But, as children, we loved it. At the caravan

park, where of course it was always sunny, we used to play with whatever other children were there at tennis – arguing about the rules which none of us had any real knowledge of – and football (ditto on rules) and as a real treat we flew the kite. Well, actually, we hardly ever managed to fly the kite as the wind was always too light (as I said the weather was always good) and the kite was not the best."

It's funny how people remember the time they holidayed in an area, such as this person, who thought it was when the Suez Crisis was on (1956) they spent a week at the Riverside for several years, and other members of the family would come down to enjoy the area.

I spoke with one visitor who mentioned she came to stay in Bognor Regis for her honeymoon. They had been sent the key by the site owner.

When they arrived by train, they had Key No 9 but had forgotten the name of the site. They found a policeman who eventually located the site for them.

Today, caravans are a world away from the earlier models. They are very spacious, have balconies, full facilities for all of today’s electrical needs, plenty of wardrobe space, and all of our modern requirements.

Interestingly, when we look at the history of caravans, it is to find that one of the major players in the development of caravans is Bourne Leisure, which apparently led the way and was the first organisation to provide hardstanding, and to create a community atmosphere in their parks.

Today, of course, we think of them here in relation to being the owners of Church Farm and also Butlin’s.

Amberley museum was founded in 1979 by the Southern Industrial History Centre Trust and is dedicated to the industrial heritage of the South East, charting the history of local industry and crafts in this part of Sussex. The visitor reception is a key part of the visitor journey with over 50,000 visitors passing through each year. As a volunteer, your role will be to work with the paid reception and retail team to ensure every visitor has a superb experience and welcome, and that the shop runs smoothly. The role includes serving customers using the till, promotion of guidebooks, selling museum membership, cash handling, pricing items, presentation & display, helping with deliveries, meeting & greeting coaches and groups, and acting as orientation guide on busy event days. The veterans enjoy aeroplanes, trains and intellectual conversation and have worked as a train signal operator and in the finance field among other post-military careers. Brave Bognor sitting second after sneaking past Sandown in thriller BOGNOR RFC will be looking to consolidate second spot after coming out on top of a titanic clash with rivals Sandown & Shanklin.

THe Hampshire Avenue side leapfrogged over their rivals in the Hampshire Premier standings after a pulsating 14-13 win in front of a home crowd at the weekend.

THose four points put Bognor three ahead of the Isle of Wight side, albeit with Sandown still having a game in hand.

With no match tomorrow and then five matches of the season still to play, the Purple and Greens will know they cannot afford any slip-ups if they are to seal the runners-up spot behind undefeated leaders Basingstoke.

THey will want to build on an excellent defensive display which saw them dominate Sandown early on and reap the rewards on the scoreboard.

George Castleton and James Barlow set the tone without the ball, ensuring the visitors gained next to no forward momentum.

THe returning Nathan Archer then turned the ball over excellently with a huge hit in the midfield, allowing fly half Dave Sweeney to capitalise.

He kicked the ball through and chased it

down to pile over the white line and give Bognor a 7-0 lead.

THe Purple and Greens then held firm for the rest of the half, Billy Toone using his experience to control the game after a solid foundation was set.

THe forwards were dominating the ruck area but not so much the scrum, Tom Orchard working hard with Adam Groome to secure quick ball for the playmakers to work with.

It was Sweeney who made the breakthrough, weaving through the line majestically, then feeding Archer who gave the ball back to man of the match Sweeney to cross the line. 14-0.

THe second half started with ill discipline from the home side, a few penalties here and there saw Sandown really take the game by the scruff of the neck and score a penalty in front of the posts. 14-3.

THe visitors then added seven as their back row somehow squeezed down the flank to score a try out of nothing. 10-14.

Bognor continued to defend stoutly and an offside infringement reduced the lead to one point. But the home side saw the game out with some terrific last ditch tackles and great game management in the forwards.

CHICHESTER RFC's bid for four wins on the bounce was foiled by THurrock as the Essex raiders produced a smash and grab performance at Oaklands Park.

THe 20-28 defeat last weekend was disappointing for the spirited Blues who have played some of their best rugby of the season in recent weeks.

But Scott Ashley's side never really recovered from a poor first half which saw them go in at the break 18-6 down.

Chi rallied in the second 40 but could not do enough even to claim a losing bonus point, meaning they slip to 10th, seven points above the bottom three.

With a bye this week, Chi now must regroup ahead of the final six matches of the season, kicking off with a trip to south west London to play London Cornish on March 2 (2.30pm).

Chi, who made six changes to the side that beat leaders Brighton a fortnight ago, kicked off down the hill against THurrock.

But the visitors took an early 3-0 lead before

sloppy play saw both sides make a number of errors. Eventually, it was the Essex side that scored the first try, making the best of a five metre scrum.

Both sides then swapped penalties before THurrock added a second five pointer with Chi only managing a Gareth Anscombe penalty in reply before the half time break.

Into the second period and four yellow cards reduced both sides to 13.

Blues got on the front foot and despite resolute defending Sam Drayson found a gap to ground the ball in Vultures Corner, much to the delight of the Chi faithful on the balcony.

THurrock responded immediately though to restore the 12 point lead. 13-25.

Chi replied and surged forward. A yellow card for the visitors was shown as they illegally halted a Blues charge. From the next play Ben Polhill reduced the deficit. 20-25.

But THurrock charged up the other end, slotting a penalty to deny Blues a bonus points.

CROSS COUNTRY: Chichester Runners finished their Sussex Cross Country League campaign at Bexhill earlier this month emerging with individual and team medals after a hard-fought season.

With both Liam Dunne and Ned Potter in good form, the club’s U17 men knew a solid all-round performance was all that was needed to secure team medals.

THey excelled themselves by finishing just one point behind league winners Hastings on the day to secure third place overall. Dunne (second) also took individual honours.

In the seniors, Chi succeded in their aim to keep both the men’s and women’s senior teams in the top flight.

THe women were led home by 18-year old Alice Cox-Rusbridge (15th) who continued her fine winter season by winning the overall Sussex League title.

Next home for Chichester was Maggie King, 16, who finished 22nd overall THe men, too, regained their status but only by the skin of their teeth, finishing sixth of eight teams.

Leo Stallard had his best run of the season to finish in 10th place on the day, closely followed by fellow Under 20 Ben Morton.

Chi look for repeat of five star show as in-form Uckfield visit

GB calling for Falcons' Amy CHICHESTER Falcon Amy Morris has made history by becoming the youngest squad member to gain international honours.

THe 11-year-old Bishop Luffa School pupil has been selected

by GB Softball to represent Great Britain in 2019.

Her first competition of the season will be an U-15 tournament in Moergestel, Holland, in late March, followed by the U-13 European Championships in Collecchio, Italy, later in the Summer.

In the meantime, she continues to train both at the Falcons Softball Club in Chichester and with her GB team-mates in London.

She also attends the BSUK Softball Academy in Slough once a month, to work with older age groups and develop her skills.

Falcons coach Dave Morris said: "THis is Amy’s third year of achieving international selection and remains as one of the very youngest in the squad.

"Making up for her age (and size) deficit with her skill and commitment, the Falcons can look forward to watching Amy’s progress as she continues to rise through

the international ranks."

Meanwhile, locally, the Falcons senior team took the first place trophy in the annual Solent League Indoor Tournament.

After meeting the other seven sides, the Chi side played out the day with five wins, a tie and a loss.

THose results were enough for the Falcons to soar into the gold final where they narrowly defated UPSU Shafters in a tight defensive game.

It was just rewards for the Falcons squad which had to change its tactics for the indoor game.

THe greatly reduced playing area requires teams to adapt their game to avoid getting caught off the wall.

However, the Falcons are well-versed in the art of ‘small-ball’ where runs are manufactured with smart base-running and precise, disciplined hitting.

THis tactic, complemented by a squad with plenty of depth, including two 18-yearolds, two players over 45 and a debutant, proved extremely successful for Chi on the day.

THe tournament also raised nearly £400 for the Samaritans charity.

Sids look to sink the Pirates

SCFL Division One side Sidlesham will be looking to pick up their first win in close to a month as they welcome third-place Bexhill United to the Recreation Ground tomorrow.

Steve Bailey's side have only played one match in the last month, a 3-1 home defeat to AFC Varndeanians last weekend.

A late strike from Ryan Chittock was scant reward for a Sids showing that was full of effort and endeavour.

Bailey will be wanting to see more of that tomorrow (3pm) against THe Pirates who have scored the most of any side in their league.

Fellow Division Once side Selsey will be looking to take back fourth place as they host AFC Varndeanians tomorrow (3pm).

Blues were pushed down into fifth by the Brighton-based side after only managing a 2-2 draw at Hailsham last weekend.

While the result was perhaps not what manager Daren Pearce was looking for, he will be pleased with the resilience Selsey showed as Bradley Higgins-Pearce and THomas Atkinson netted late on to bag a point.

In SCFL Premier Pagham will be looking to pick up some vital points to pull them up the standings.

THe Lions have a double header in the league this week, starting tomorrow when they welcome surprise package Lingfield to Nyetimber Lane (3pm).

THat's followed by a trip to Arundel in midweek on Tuesday (7.45pm) with the Mullets in desperate need of points to avoid the drop.

Pagham, who are rebuilding mode with making a push for promotion next season, will be encouraged with the performance shown last weekend when they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by fourth-place Horsham YMCA. THat loss was only the Lions' sixth defeat of the season, leaving them tenth in the table.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to dent Copthorne's title bid when they welcome the Crawley-based side to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins are now seventh after a convincing 4-1 win at struggling Upper Beeding last weekend.

After falling behind to a first half strike, a Mark Desi double and Alex Barnes strike his 13th of the season - put Bosham in front.

THe points were wrapped up by Max Terry in injury time. Bosham lost to Copthorne 2-1 in the reverse fixture.

Newbie Nina backed to impress for City CHICHESTER City Ladies have swooped to improve their defence ahead of a crunch clash with Cardiff City this weekend.

THe Green and White Army are currently top of the FA Women's Southern Premier, two points clear of Coventry United, who have three games in hand.

Behind them are Cardiff, meaning three points on the road in south Wales will go a long way to securing a top-two finish for Aaron Smith's squad.

THeir ranks for the trip on Sunday (2pm) will be boosted with the addition of goalkeeper Nina Wilson from Championship side Lewes.

THe 19-year-old has previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion while also representing Sussex at county level.

Wilson will provide cover for Smith’s side who have seen both Sadie Blakely and Lauren Dolbear struggle with old injuries.

THe Chi manager said: "We have been unlucky this season to lose both of our first team keepers to old injuries.

"I've watched Nina play a number of times and she has always impressed me but since signing her on loan I've had the chance to talk to her and the first thing you notice is her warm personality and her professionalism.

"I'd like to thank Fran and Simon at Lewes for allowing us to sign Nina on loan and I believe that she will be a very valuable addition to our squad."

Chi had a weekend off although their development squad beat Lewes DS 2-0.

Pearce: Home form crucial as Rocks host second-place Boro Next Game

HARINGEY BORO (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is calling on his side to step up their home form - starting tomorrow when they welcome second-place Haringey Borough to the Nye Camp.

A common complaint from Rocks fans has been a lack of consistency, particularly when in front of their home fans But despite losing a third of their matches at Nyewood Lane in the league this campaign, Bognor remain in the playoff shake-up, sitting fifth in the Bostik Premier.

With close to a quarter of the season to go, Pearce knows the Rocks must make improvements if they are to keep up the momentum and remain in the mix come the end of the season.

With Haringey just six points above them and only winning once in their last five, the Bognor boss will be keen to make sure his side start by picking up three points tomorrow against the north London side.

Pearce said: "I am sure they [Haringey] will want to bounce back and they will enjoy our playing surface but it's a challenge for us.

"It's up there for us to go and do well and we know just how important the game is for both teams.

"Home form will decide where you come in the league at the end of the season.

"Our away form has been excellent this year but our home form has been very inconsistent.

We will hopefully have a few more players

available for selection for the game because it is important to get competition for places."

Among the long-term absentees who could be back in the starting line-up tomorrow are Keaton Wood, Corey Heath and Calvin Davies.

All three are back in training after being injured for most of the season.

THe most likely of the two to feature will be Davies, as the energetic full back made an appearance off the bench in the 0-0 draw at Bishop's Stortford last weekend.

Despite missing Joe Tomlinson (unavailable) and Richard Gilot (injury) the Rocks produced a spirited rearguard action in Hertfordshire to make the long journey back with a point.

It was a performance which the travelling Rocks fans have not often seen from their side but the clean sheet and defensive resilience gives then hope for a positive end to the season.

Pearce said: "We have good players and we have done well in recent weeks with six or seven missing.

"We are delighted with how the squad has performed in that time and we hope injuries clear up for the run in.

"If we have everyone back for last 11 games then I think we have a good chance of getting in the playoffs."

Semi with Seagulls confirmed IT took a couple of weeks to be confirmed.

But Rocks now know that standing in their way of a May date out at THe Amex will be Sussex Senior Cup favourites Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s.

THe young Seagulls have lifted the trophy in each of the past two seasons. But they only squeeked into the semi final of the county cup with a 2-0 extra time win over SCFL Premier side Eastbourne Town in midweek.

With the tie now confirmed, a decent crowd is expected for the last four clash which will see Rocks face Albion at Lancing's Culver Road on March 5.

One player who will be in the opposing line-up is left back Joe Tomlinson, who is on loan at Nyewood Lane from Albion. THe youngster will be back in the Rocks' ranks tomorrow after missing the Bishop’s Stortford game to play for Albion in a 1-0 away win over Manchester City in Premier League 2.

Bognor boss Jack Pearce said: “I am really pleased for Joe. THey did very well up there to get a result. Not many people get a result at City these days, at any level.

"Obviously he was a major miss for us because if there is one position we are struggling to cover it is Joe’s."

IT'S a few days now since the trip to Hertfordshire for the Rocks' 0-0 draw with Bishop's Stortford.

THe match itself was a strange one as we had to contend with their attacking threat quite a lot. In fact, I couldn’t believe it ended goalless as we really did have our backs against the wall for long periods.

Harvey and THeo both put their bodies on the line a number of times and Dan Lincoln had to be alert with so many corners and crosses.

I think our forwards were pretty frustrated, too, as whenever we did get the ball forward they just got it back straight away.

A point is a point though and we had a good go talking about it on the supporters coach during the long trip back.

It's a good crowd on there and, for trips like the one to Bishop's Stortford, it starts pretty early.

I'm normally the first one on the coach as I get picked up from Littlehampton station about 45 minutes before we're due at Nyewood Lane.

We then pick up a few people in Felpham such as Ken and Joe from the Flansham crossing. THen at Nyewood Lane everyone else gets on providing they are on time!

THere are a few serial offenders who are always a bit late like Michael Hall and Sergio Perrone and we always try to remind them of this fact when they inevitably are!

THere's always bit of banter on the coach and this week Ken Wood and Tommy Mac convinced Aldwick Mark and another chap called John that Mr Bean would be appearing at Seasons. It took a while until they realised we were having them on!

THe atmosphere is always friendly and newbies are always welcome. But most of the time we have the same faces in the same seats.

I'm normally near Ken White who is famous for his sparkly

green hat and green horn which means you can see and hear him from anywhere.

THen there's Rob who usually brings his Pringles which he shares round, although I think he's cutting down on them now, much to everyone's disappointment.

It's always good getting to know everyone. THey all have a slightly different opinion, too, which makes it interesting.

Much of the chat this week was about the club's inconsistency.

But we were all agreed that the main thing is looking at staying in that top five.

Looking at our fixtures with Dorking, Margate, Haringey and Worthing to come, there are a lot of teams to overcome to seal that playoff spot.

THere's also a bit of discussion about the super playoff which means that even if we win the Bostik Premier playoffs we may have to beat the playoff winners in another league to win promotion.

I think it makes the whole thing a bit of a farce.

Injured players is also a hot topic although with Calvin on the bench and Mason returning to the starting lineup last weekend, things are looking a bit more positive than in recent weeks.

We must start putting away our chances though, starting tomorrow against Haringey.

It is a crucial one as we need to start winning our home games. THey had a spell when they were flying but seem to be having a bit of a blip at the moment after losing a number of players to other clubs.

Personally, I would be happy with a 1-0 win as I think we just have to grind out some victories and that will be crucial lifting the team and our own supporters at home.

If we can get our players fit then I genuinely think we can make a good go to get into the top three. Without that then it will be difficult.
