Town's thanks from Queen ROYAL thanks have been given to Bognor Regis residents. THe Queen has issued a regal message for the bumper book of greetings its residents compiled for her 90th birthday earlier this year. THe Friends of Bognor Regis Pier put together the unique celebration for the monarch's latest personal milestone in commemoration of her links to the town in her childhood. THey gathered an outstanding 4,110 best wishes in a giant album . Christopher Sandamas, the chief clerk to the Queen, told the Friends that Her Majesty regarded the gesture as a 'splendid album'. "THe Queen was delighted to see the thousands of thoughtful messages sent by members of the local community and further afield in honour of her birthday," he wrote to the Friends' chairman, Jan Malpas. "Her Majesty was greatly touched by the kind sentiments expressed in the album and, in return, the Queen has asked me to send her very best wishes to you and all concerned with the project." As reported, the Friends began working on the project last February. THey gathered the best wishes - some illustrated - with a variety of signing sessions, visits to schools and social media posts. Among those who contributed were the pupils of Bishop Tufnell infant and junior schools, Felpham Community College, Hollymead House care home in

Felpham and South Bersted Air Cubs. As well as the Bognor Regis area and UK, the greetings to the Queen came from around the world. Sweden, New Zealand, THailand, South Africa, Canada and the USA were among the countries represented. THey were combined into the album which measures 24ins high, 4.5ins deep and 18ins wide. It was taken to Buckingham Palace in late October by the five-strong combined communications group of the Friends. THey returned to the palace recently to collect the album after they had received the letter from Mr Sandamas to the delight of the group of supporters of the pier. Mrs Malpas said: "It's a fantastic letter after all the work that went into the album. "To receive something like this, and to know Her Majesty has actually touched the album, is absolutely brilliant. We are so thrilled with the response. "It means something and shows the album is a historic document for Bognor Regis." THe Friends were planning to let as many people as possible to see the album, especially those who had contributed to it, she said. A total of 30 schools had made submissions. "We are going to go round with the album to each of the schools to show them what we have done," said Mrs Malpas. Turn to page two

Julie chosen to become an entrepreneur ATTENDING a nationally recognised course has led to the joint founder of a Bognor Regis women's centre achieving an expansion of its services. Julie Budge was one of 180 applicants for just 20 places on the current Lloyds Bank social entrepreneurs programme. She said her success had already made a difference to her work with My Sister's House Arun and Chichester Women's Centre. "I had the mentoring advice and support to approach West Sussex County Council. THis resulted in a presentation to the cabinet with an outcome that we will be commissioned for widening our services. THis will be a contract worth thousands," she said. "I am so proud of what My Sister's House has achieved in just 18 months and this has been recognised by being accepted on such an amazing programme for the next year." THe year-long programme, run with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, backs those who are developing social businesses by providing financial support and comprehensive learning support. THis includes a business mentoring scheme. Julie helped to set up the My Sister's House community interest company to
support vulnerable women by offering practical, emotional and therapeutic support and tailor-made help to the women get their lives back on track. More than 1,000 social entrepreneurs have been supported by the programme since its launch in 2012. "I won a place and was awarded £15,000 which will help fund my first salary. THat will make a massive difference as I have been mainly unpaid up to now," said Julie. "THe opportunity to meet 19 other fabulous social entrepreneurs every month for two days training for a year, action learning sessions and a mentor has been amazing and will be so valuable as we scale up our services." Paula Rogers, the head of the social entrepreneurs programme at Lloyds Banking Group, said: "I look forward to witnessing the businesses develop throughout the year and seeing the positive impact these social entrepreneurs will contribute to their communities." School for Social Entrepreneurs chief executive Alastair Wilson said: "I look forward to seeing how our new students shape their ideas and develop their social businesses with the valuable support of the business throughout the year."

"If people want to see the album, hopefully, it will create a good feeling in the town." THe album's delivery to Buckingham Palace was followed by
the bombshell news pier owner John Ayers had decided against continuing his company's support for a £5m lottery bid by the Bognor Pier Trust to restore the pier. Mrs Malpas said: "We are gutted by what has happened. We have worked very hard to try to move the project forward. "But there is nothing we can do about it. We just have to look at how we can make progress in a different way." THe Friends will be meeting soon to decide on their next course of action in the coming year.

Delight of a D-Day veteran on his 90th D-DAY veteran Robert Gardiner's 90th birthday spanned five generations. Mr Gardiner enjoyed meeting his great-great-grandson, Leo Bassett, for only the second time at a party at his Ford home. Ten-month-old Leo, who lives in Kingston in Surrey, was equally delighted by the encounter. Mr Gardiner's daughter, Sami Gardiner, said: "As soon as they both saw each other, their faces lit up." THe celebration earlier this month was Mr Gardiner's second to mark his personal milestone. His family of four children, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and Leo, also held a 90th birthday event for him at THe Maypole Inn in Yapton last
summer. THe doubling up is caused by confusion around Mr Gardiner's birthday. He lied about his age to serve in the Second World War and his actual date of birth has been forgotten. A labourer in Kingston, Mr Gardiner was an army Fusilier and was transferred to the Oxford and Bucks Regiment's THird Division two weeks before the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. He and his comrades camped in Arundel, possibly in the castle grounds, before the big day and they stormed on to Sword Beach in Normandy about three hours after the first troops. "He talks about the beach and says it was not that bad,"said Sami. "We
know he was shot but he makes a joke about it." Mr Gardiner and his best friend were involved in some escapades. One involved stealing a US Jeep and having to drive it through a large building to escape from German snipers. He helped to liberate Holland where he has been treated as a hero on his return visits. His wartime service earned him four medals. He returned to labouring after the war in his Surrey hometown and then became a coalman and a coach driver. He moved to Nelson Row in Ford in 2002. Sami often takes him to Littlehampton where he delights in seeing the boats which revive his memories of fishing.

Campaigners raise homes alarm OPPONENTS of large scale housing in Pagham have begun to step up their campaign. THe official publication of the first of an expected series of planning applications for major estates in the area has prompted their action. THey spent the Christmas weekend making sure their supporters were aware of the need to make their objections known to Arun District Council. THe initial outline application has been submitted by Taylor Wimpey for up to 250 homes on land north of Sefter Road. Albert Homer, one of the founders of the PAGAM group, said: "We have already started on the process of alerting interested parties about the release of the planning application number (P/134/16/OUT) so that they can prepare to make comments about the application." He said making the application public two days before Christmas Eve was irritating. But the timing need not be critical to the success of the campaign.
"Since the last date for comments is February 2, it seems that the normal 21 day period has been extended to make allowance for this. "And it is possible that a further extension may be made to allow time for consultants to prepare their studies," he added. PAGAM has held two packed public meetings, the latest is pictured right, to raise awareness about the threat to the fields around Pagham from a banket of concrete. Taylor Wimpey held an exhibition in Rose Green last July about its initial proposals for the 13.34 hectares. Its formal scheme includes land for a new primary school, a replacement hut for the 1st Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts and a site for an ambulance community response post. THe Scouts have used part of the proposed development site close to Sefter Road for decades and feared the housing would seriously disrupt their activities by forcing them to move.
THe ambulance post will answer the need of South East Coast Ambulance NHS Trust for a base for two vehicles and a small office where its paramedics can have the chance to wait in between answering 999 calls and would allow Bognor Regis ambulance station to close. Taylor Wimpey's planning agent, Hardeep Hunjan, says in a statement with the application: "THe land use mix proposed has been driven by the longstanding vision for the site to create a residential-led development that can also deliver benefits for the wider area in terms of supporting infrastructure in the form of land for a new primary school, a replacement scout hut and a new ambulance outpost station. "THe mix of uses proposed will help to create a successful and sustainable new neighbourhood which will deliver a range of benefits." THe housing will be a mix of properties for sale and affordable homes of 1-4 bedrooms. Some four hectares of open space have been included in the plans.

Chefs serve up pram race win
HERE are the winners in the 2016 Pagham Pram Race: Men's race: 1 - Big Wave Rider, 2 THe Clowns, 3 - Calm Down, Calm Down; Women's race: 1 - Baked Off, 2 - Christmas Part Two, 3 - I'm A Celeb; Novelty: 1 - Ghostbusters, 2 Major Tom, 3 - Enchanted; Fancy dress: 1 Alice in Wonderland, 2 - Super Mario, 3 Tim Peake, 4 -Camp 1 Dennis Doughty Memorial Shield: Camp 1; Pub: THe Bear.
FIRST-TIMER Chloe Archer and her friends cooked up a winning entry in this year's Pagham Pram Race. Chloe, 20, Olga Podplomyk, 21, and Marietta Caira and Emily Dawling, both 20, took along wooden spoons as part of their Baked Off entry to the annual Boxing Day fun. But, instead of coming last, the teammates from the Bognor Regis area took first place in the women's section of the festive spectacular. Chloe said: "We are surprised and really happy to have won. We just entered for a laugh. We will celebrate in THe Lamb afterwards. "All the members of my family have done this race and, being the youngest member, I wanted to take part too. We will definitely be coming back next year." THe race winners, Big Wave Rider, also spanned the generation gap. Father and son Peter and Elliot Batty crossed the finishing line at THe Lamb after a close battle with four clowns. THe pair, who live opposite the pub, swopped places this year with Peter, 53, in the pram and Elliot, 21, pushing after their initial joint entry two years ago. Peter, said: "I've entered the race every time since I've been here for the last 20 years, apart from last year, and I've won it several times. "It's good to win again and it's nice to pass the race on from generation to generation. It's a fun event and it's nice after Christmas to let loose. "Everybody is so friendly here, it's
unbelieveable. I'm sure the crowds get bigger every year. We will be back in 2017." THe latest race was the 71st to be held in an unbroken sequence of eccentricity going back to the inaugural race in 1946. It was started by a group of demobbed servicemen from Pagham. THey decided to challenge each other for fun with a 'baby' in a pram being pushed by an adult and stopping at three pubs - THe Bear, THe Lamb and the King's Beach Hotel for a pint of beer at each - before finishing at THe Lamb. With one small change, the Pagham Beach Cafe replacing the now closed hotel opposite, the routine has stayed the same along the three-mile course. Monday's staging saw 53 dedicated and enthusiastic entries with probably 200 individuals take part. THey were cheered on their way by a crowd estimated to be at least 6,000 who were encouraged to dig deep and donated ÂŁ2,828.13 on the day to beat last year's amount. THe more serious entries were joined by the usual mixture of fancy dress competitors who took their inspiration from everything to Donald Trump's election as the US President, with a Great Wall of America, to British astronaut Major Tim Peake to films and fairytales. THe entries also ranged in size from pairs up to 13-strong and they completed the course in anything from less than 15 minutes to nearer 45 minutes. THose which caught the attraction of the crowds included striking elves,

Pram race stalwart and Aldwick resident Sean Wickenden was back for his 32nd year in a row. He and his daughter-in-law took part with a replica of the International Space Station. He told the crowd: "It's good to see so many people today doing this. I'm really pleased to take part." Five giant dinosaurs also provided plenty of monstrous fun as they marauded around the route alongside THe Wizard of Oz, fairies and the Rev Mark Eminson and his team from St THomas a'Becket Church. One of the last entries home but the
first on the judges' list for fancy dress was the Alice in Wonderland tableau from the Dizzy Ducklings Pre-Schools led by owner Lizzie Austin. THe Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter were joined by spade and heart playing cards among the 14 characters who brought the famous story to life. Lizzie said: "It's absolutely amazing to have won. THis is the third year we have entered and we came second in the past two years. "THe success is due to the hard work of our team. Tim's delight with pram-tastic day DELIGHTED vice-president Tim Holland looked around his 40th Pagham Pram Race and said: "THis justifies all the hard work. "Every year, the committee put in a lot of work to stage the race and it's always an act of faith. "We don't know how many entries there will be, how many people will turn up to watch and what the weather will be like. "But days like today make it all worthwhile. "Everyone involved with the pram race is keen to keep it going. THis was our 71st event and we want it to continue for another 71 years. "We all pull together behind the scenes. THere's a huge amount of goodwill from our sponsors and all those taking part
and we're grateful to everyone who helps us. "THere are people who come back year after year to join in. We are on our third, possibly even fourth, generations of local families. THe race has almost become a rite of passage for people living in Pagham." Besides the fun, the race also generates a significant amount of money for charities which serve the Bognor Regis area. Last year saw £15,000 donated from the race and several other events staged away from Boxing Day. THe total is boosted by the generosity of the winners who willingly give back their £295 total prize money when they are presented with their trophies by Mr Holland after the race.

f Michael Johnson accepts the college's cheque
Objections to student rooms NEIGHBOURS of proposed student accommdation in Bognor Regis have objected to the plans. THey fear the conversion of the Villa Maria convent in Campbell Road will cause annoyance and disruption to the residential area. SCG Developments has applied for planning permission from Arun District Council to change the use of the property from a residential institution to accommodation for 25 students. Dr Anne Dean and Irene Kemp, of Sovereign Court in Campbell Road, told Arun before the deadline for comments closed earlier this month they were extremely concerned about the proposal. "We - and a number of other residents residing in Sovereign Court - are strongly opposed to this proposal and feel extremely anxious since it could change the whole tenor of living in this very quiet road and our quality of life could be seriously affected by issues such as noise, parking difficulties etc. "Campbell Road is made up almost exclusively of developments of retirement flats and is known as one of the quietest roads in the whole of Bognor Regis. We would like it to stay that way," they stated. "We personally have previous direct experience of living in close proximity to student accommodation and the noise that inevitably resulted from this at all hours of the day and night," they stated. John and Betty Rudkin, also of Sovereign Court, wrote: "However well managed initially there would not be any control over activities of the students when outside the proposed property. Management could change and we would have no guarantee of continuity."
Gavin Moat lives in Priory Court next to Villa Maria. He urged Arun to be sensitive to the character of the road and refuse the proposal. "Campbell Road already has limited parking. THe residents who live in this road have to pay for a parking permit. "A further 25 units being occupied on this road would cause congestion and residents fighting for parking spaces. I am very concerned that if this building is to house students...then we would be subjected to anti-social behaviour," he said. Villa Maria is a substantial 2.5 storey Edwardian villa of some 580sq m which was used as a nursing home before it became a convent in the late 1970s. A statement by SCG Developments' planning agent, Paul White, says: "THe proposal entails a change of use of an existing residential institution use with a modest side extension to the existing building and proposed single storey detached building to the rear. "THe proposal is for a 'car free' development in order not to over burden the highway network or existing on street parking arrangements. "A nominated and salaried student warden will be resident on site and will liaise with the offsite 'My Student Let' management team for the benefit of the students themselves and their neighbours." Andrew Edwards, the principal of the LSI Portsmouth language school, has supported the application because of the way the applicant has managed its halls of accommodation. It is one of two letters of support Arun has received along with 13 letters of objection. Bognor Regis Town Council has twice decided not to object provided a 24 hour helpdesk is available for neighbours to contact.
Fuel help scheme PARK home residents around Bognor Regis have been urged to claim help for their heating costs. THe park home warm home discount is a government scheme which provides eligible households with a £140 discount on their electricity bill. Many park home residents pay their site owner for the electricity they use rather than having an account with an energy provider. THis scheme has been specially set up for these residents who would not otherwise benefit from the warm homes discount for bricks and mortar properties. Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council's cabinet member
for community services, said: "Winter is a traditionally expensive time of year so I would encourage families and residents living in park homes to contact their site owner. "THere are also plenty of tips available on the Arun Wellbeing website about how you can keep your home warm and your energy bills lower this winter." Contact Charis on 03303 801040 for details about eligibility for the scheme or visit: www.parkhomeswhd.com Last winter saw the overall discount scheme help nearly 2.2m vulnerable consumers with more than £320m of support.
at the college, visited Big Love just before the end of term to present a £500 cheque to its founder, Michael Johnson. She was joined by Alice Jarvis, Carly Jellett and Georgia Henton, pictured left, who are sixth form students who run the college's charity committee. College headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "As a school, we feel it is important to support local charities, especially at Christmas. "We always support Big Love and Stonepillow on the last day of autumn term and it is great that all students join in and contribute." It was a busy term for charitable activities at the college. Events and collections included the British Heart Foundation Bag-a-thon, shoe boxes filled and collected for Link to Hope, food donations to Bognor Regis Foodbank and a collection for local charities at the end of term concert."

Cubs mark centenary with a bang FIREWORKS and a blazing beacon saw some 150 Cubs from the Bognor Regis area celebrate a century of the movement. THe Cubs, their leaders, adult helpers, parents and friends gathered on the town's seafront as part of a UK-wide celebration. Akela Jan Poupart, the assistant district commissioner Cubs for Bognor Regis district, said the occasion was a memorable way of ensuring the official registration date of the Cub Scout section was marked on December 16. "At just after 7pm, following a countdown from 16, district commissioner Ally Dodd pressed the ignition switch and the beacon on
Bognor Regis seafront burst into loud flames accompanied by cheers from the Cubs," she said. "At exactly 7.16pm, everyone who had ever been a Cub Scout joined to renew their promise. "After a fantastic firework display, just over 200 people walked through the town to St Mary's School hall for a celebration party." THe birthday co-incided with Save the Children Christmas jumper day and Cubs who wore one of the colourful sweaters donated a total of ÂŁ70 to be sent to the charity. THe night-time events followed a year of centenary activities by Cub Scouts around the world. "During 2016, the 'year of adventure', Bognor Regis Cubs have camped along with 2,000 Cubs from all over Sussex, taking part in exciting activities from abseiling and archery to zorbing," said Mrs Poupart. "Cubs have hiked, camped locally, visited London and joined the national Cub Take Over Days at London Zoo and Chessington."

Coming year is a chance for a new life NEW year and a new you - let 2017 be the time when the saying comes to life. THe start of the next 12 months is a golden opportunity to take stock about life and the chance to look afresh at the challenges ahead. Among the top resolutions for most will be the desire to get fitter and healthier. Too often, the good intentions of the past have remained just that - dreams. But it's the ability to turn those ideas into reality that really counts. Small steps at a time are often the best way of achieving improvements. Not many people would be able to run a marathon the day after they have bought a
pair of training shoes. THat goal can be achieved more safely and sensibly by setting out a plan which covers a training programme designed to build up muscles and stamina. Specialists abound with the know-how to bring out the best in each individual who is seeking to better themselves. It could be a healthier diet to remove some flab which has crept on in the past year or the desire to eat a more natural diet. Or it could be the chance to overcome the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. Modern living encourages sitting down - dribving, using computers, watching televi-
sion and gaming. Never has the need been greater to get bodies moving again with everyday exercises. Gyms are ideal for some people who thrive on that atmosphere of mutual improvement and encouragement. For others, a personal trainer might be the best way. THat one-to-one advice and support from an expert is guaranteed to get even the biggest couch potato to leave behind their slothful habits. Or maybe give running a go. Joining the other runners crossing the finishing line of a 10k race is an indescrible feeling and far more satisfying than simply standing on the sidelines watching.
Live life to the full in 2017 and become healthier and fitter
Becoming fitter will be boosted by the bonus of being able to wear clothes more comfortably and the confidence that comes from knowing you have regained control over your life. THat confidence will also translate into looking good in a virtuous circle. So, the new year awaits you - and those who grab the chances it offers will reap the benefits in 12 months' time from their positive work. THat is 365 days in which to take action about your life. Envisage what you would like to achieve by then. And act on those thoughts. What are you waiting for?

New You 11
Health &
Well-being by Denise Kelly
New Year, New You! I know we shouldn’t have to wait until the end of the year to start making plans for a better future, but I love January for precisely that reason. It’s a good excuse to start a fresh and make changes in your life for more positivity and production, and a happier healthier new you! Before you can think about your health and happiness, why not try DE cluttering all of your life..for example…
Clean Out The Clutter It's difficult to re-focus when there is clutter and chaos. Reorganizing your work or living space clears the way for fresh, new and greater things to come about. Sort drawers and cabinets and discard items that you no longer have a use for or they no longer serve a purpose for you.
Interior Decorating Changing your environment can assist in moving out old and worn out energies, patterns and bring in the new. If you haven’t got the time or the finances to make big changes, make some small changes and see how powerful that can be. Moving furniture around, painting a wall, a new piece of artwork and putting some new pictures up are quick, inexpensive and easy ways to bring freshness to your living space.
Give your fitness routine a recharge Our bodies need change to keep muscles from becoming used to the same old thing. Add some new exercises to your routine or revamp the entire workout. But most importantly do something that you love and that
makes you happy!
Emotional wellbeing – Invest some time and energy into your emotional wellbeing. It’s just as important to look after your mental health, as it is your physical health. Learn how to meditate, start some yoga, get out in the fresh air more, and learn a challenging new skill. Invest some money in having a regular massage, or some acupuncture, or a counselling session, hypnotherapy or EFT (Emotional freedom therapy). Whatever you feel you need, invest and make it happen.
Health - Cook from fresh Cooking from scratch is a far better way to eat than processed packaged foods. All the goodness is available and if it's freshly prepared by your bare hands, it's got a whole lot more love gone into it! Get a new cook book to give you fresh and inspiring ideas, try new foods and use an array of herbs and spices as they all have a great impact on your health and immune protection this time of year. THe most important rule of fresh cooking is to be organised and have the right foods in your fridge!
2. Smoothies – THese are a great way
of keeping the fibre in the foods and brilliant if you have any digestive issues (let's face it that’s a lot of people this time of year!!). You can be really experimental with your smoothies and add super foods and good oils such as evening primrose into the mix (evening primrose is great for your hormones). You can add chia seeds to help keep your blood sugar balanced, and mix with coconut water to help keep your
electrolytes in check. Mix fruits and vegetables together so you don’t get too much of a sugar hit. THings such as bananas, blueberries, avocados, spinach, kale and cucumber make a delicious mix and keep your energy high.
3. Soups – they are so easy to make and
very healthy. THey help keep weight at bay and can keep you feeling full. You can't really go far wrong when making a soup, and chucking in seasonal
vegetables and herbs and spices keeps the cost down too. Sweet potatoes, celery, onions, garlic, carrots, winter squash, turmeric and chili make a massive power punch of nutrition. You can make a big batch and freeze for days when you are more rushed! Most importantly enjoy your foods and the wonderful health that they give you for the New Year!
Best Three Ways of getting good fresh foods into your body 1. Juicing – Juice green, greens and
more greens for energy, great skin, great hair and fabulous brainpower! My favourite alkalizing recipes are cucumbers, spinach, lemon, ginger, apples and celery. THis mixture is great for alkalizing the body and provides great minerals and vitamins. Do this every day and you will feel amazing!
Make 2017 the year when you make a fresh start in your life

Teenage Growing Pains
TEENAGERS would be the last group of people thought of when it comes to needing physiotherapy. However, it is more common than it seems. We spoke to Lindy Griffiths, pictured above, of Lindy Griffiths & Associates for more information: "As a Chartered Physio and mother of three teenage boys, I know only too well how challenging it is to cope with the huge spurts in growth that take place between the ages of 13 and 16. "When teenagers are injured many clinicians will only look at the specific problem area whether it’s pain on the underside of the foot or heel, hamstring strains, swollen clicky knees or any number of recurrent back problems. Strengthening exercises and rest are of course important, but the relief could only be short term if the underlying problem is not diagnosed and corrected. "Our motto is “treat the cause not just the symptoms” and this is especially relevant in growing, active teenagers where it’s vitally important to understand how the injury
happened in the first place. If the pain has increased during or soon after a growth spurt with no physical injury then it’s likely that the problem has another cause. And this needs to be identified. "We understand the mechanics of the human body and always start with a physical examination when the patient is standing upright. This will show us if, for example, the pelvis is rotated or if the bones at the base of the spine are not moving correctly putting extra strain on the dominant side – often the right leg. "Typical treatments include a course of electrotherapy to relax the muscles followed by mobilisation that corrects the posture and exercises and advice to follow in the home. Most growing teenagers respond very quickly to treatment and in one or two sessions they can be back to normal. "We are open 8am-7pm and Saturday mornings. If your teenagers are having problems let us help them to quickly get back to doing what they love. Call us on 01243 783040 to arrange an appointment."

Start the New Year afresh with glowing skin SPEAKING from The Beauty Rooms in Chichester, Jane Bulbeck told us about her experiences with skincare that have motivated her into learning more about it and helping others with similar problems: "I suffered with bad skin in my teens, and having tried all sorts of products that promised to work, but unfortunately never did, I decided that I had nothing to lose and booked in for my first ever facial. "I was so impressed with the results that it ignited a spark of passion in me to learn and study the science behind skin and skin care. That was thirty years ago. Since then I studied and trained to become an aesthetician/beauty therapist and I haven't looked back. "It's a very exciting time in skin care right now. Whether people want to slow down the ageing process or deal with something more debilitating like acne or rosacea, there are so many more alternatives now to surgery or nasty medications that have terrible side effects. "At The Beauty Rooms we only use a 100% organic natural product line called Pevonia, and I have been fortunate enough to have been trained in the science behind the range by Dr Jurist who is their global educator.
Consequently I have gained a high level of skill and knowledge in an ever-evolving market. "One of the most cutting-edge treatments we now specialise in at The Beauty Rooms is IPL - Intense Pulse Light. This works on an array of conditions from hair reduction to skin rejuvenation. Light therapy reverses sun damage to the skin. It penetrates the skins surface targeting melanin, blood supply and collagen production, thus drastically reducing skin imperfections such as thread veins. Elaine gets physical HANDS-ON experience from the best is available for trainee fitness instructors and sports massage therapists around Bognor Regis and Chichester. Elaine Johnstone-Builth passes on the expertise she has gained from 30 years of giving people their lives back with a range of training courses at Physical Solutions. THey cover fitness instructing, personal training, assessing, business skills and sports massage. Each is run through YMCA Awards to ensure a recognised qualification is achieved. Elaine said: "It's very rewarding work. I'm helping my clients to start their first career or a new one. Some of my students are in their 40s and 50s. It's not just about the courses and ensuring they get through the manuals. "It also covers the personal side of their relationships with their clients. I tell them all
about the need for empathy, communication and reviewing the progress of their clients." Elaine offers the training at her base in Durban Road in Bognor Regis as well as various venues in Hampshire and Isle of Wight. But she is more than a tutor. Her students benefit from her continuing role as a personal trainer. Bad backs, dodgy knees and expanding waistlines are all challenges her clients can overcome with her help. "My clients tell me I am giving them their lives back," explained Elaine. "We agree their goals and how they are going to reach them. It's lovely to see them become fitter, healthier and more confident." resolutions made at the start of the new year will involve some kind of promise to “get fit”, or “lose weight” or to “just be healthier”. THese are all very well but a lot of the time these ideals go out of the window once the reality of these tasks is realised. Legends Gym in Bognor Regis aims to help you push through the challenges you face when making tough lifestyle changes by offering affordable, professional and personal fitness services. Located in the Durban Road Business Centre, this 2,000 squarefoot gym provides a more private atmosphere than might be found in a larger, chain facility. As an independent business run by local people Manager Stuart Jones described it as “a friendly and welcoming place.” He also explained that due to its cosy premises it is the perfect place to socialise. He said: “Everyone knows everyone, and the staff are on first-name terms with the customers. We find that we are able to interact easily with customers and build friendships with them.” Legends was founded in September this year by local people who used to work for Fitness First. Having witnessed the lack of personal customer service within chain companies the
staff of Legends were keen to get involved with an independent business that could put the customer first. THe gym boasts a wide range of apparatus from over 25 pieces of weight lifting equipment such as dumb bells, cable machines and free weights. For those less interested in weight lifting there is also plenty of cardio equipment to use, including running machines, cross trainers and spinning bikes. THe staff at Legends will also be on hand to offer free advice tailored specifically for you and built on their great wealth of experience. Stuart cexplained that this is not the only thing that sets them apart from other gyms on the market. He said: “What makes us different is that all the staff have trained together at the gym when we worked for Fitness First. During this time we were able to interact with customers and find out what they really needed. “We discovered that many of them wanted a more personal approach. “At Legends we believe that training should be available to all and that customers should get the advice they need to help them get the most out the training. THis should leave them more time for outside the gym. “THe gym shouldn’t take over your life. It should make you healthier so you can go out and live your life the way you want to.” Yearly membership with Legends is available at an affordable £24.99 per month, and only £15 per month for students and NHS workers. However, they also offer rolling contracts at £28.99, and one-off sessions are priced at £5 each.

Jenny’s Journey
IT’S that time of year. You know the feeling; you’ve over indulged, zips are tight, body bulges are rampant and clothes strain to breaking point. Yes it’s time for yet another new year’s resolution to lose weight and get fit. THe easy bit is making the resolution. THe hard bit is keeping to it. Over the next few weeks many will vow to get in shape and recapture the time when they were slimmer and fitter. Many sadly will fall by the wayside but as an incentive to those who really want to achieve their goal, here’s a personal tale of success. Jenny is a school teacher in Bognor Regis spoke of her fitness journey with the Arena. She said: “I have always been a big girl. At nearly 6ft tall I could carry the weight. But when, on the completion of my teacher training in July 2011, I reached nineteen and a half stone, life had to change; so the 'nothing nice' diet as I called it started in January 2012.” Realising that she would need help and advice in her undertaking, Jenny joined the Arena Gym, where she was advised on the safest and most effective way to achieve her goal. Regarding dietary advice, the Arena points out that there are some surprisingly ‘tasty low fat and sugar’ options to be discovered if you know where to look. “I started my journey with a target of four stone in a year. I smashed it and lost nearly five. Moving forward and feeling great "I started training with the Amazons basketball team and drop-in basketball with the Jets! As I evolved so did the Arena with lots more classes becoming available and I tried most of them. "But one class and instructor stood out from the others - Becky's MultiFit, which is just the best! It's an all over body workout that is suitable for all abilities, sizes, shapes and gender. Every class includes a different set up, challenging exercises, and includes cardio, strength training, toning, core and lots of fun! THere’s no chance to get bored as Becky is always changing it up. ”
“I also do the spinning class and use the gym at least 5 times a week and play badminton. THe facilities and staff have witnessed my journey and I’m proud to say I joined other Arena members for my first ever 10k run last September. "I have now lost nearly eight stone and continue to work hard and play harder! I would like to thank all the staff at the Arena and my family and friends for their support and encouragement over the years!” Jenny’s experience confirms that regular exercise and a good diet can help you lose weight, make you fitter and feel younger. To achieve her target she wisely sought professional advice. THe Arena Sports Centre is a six million pound sports facility offering everything from all-weather sports pitches to children’s activity parties to swimming. It’s a non-profit making organisation and the Arena Gym is one of the best equipped facilities in the area, with over 80 stations including the latest cardiovascular, free weights and resistance machines. Its friendly fully qualified staff are always on hand to help and advise on the safest and quickest way to achieve your personal goals. THe gym caters for a wide range of disabilities and conditions and the premises are wheelchair friendly. Until 13th February, 2017 the Arena Gym is offering membership at 2012 prices when you pay by direct debit. There’s a £30 joining fee and nothing else to pay until 20th February, 2017. On joining you receive a free induction and health check, a free personal training plan, which is updated monthly, and a free welcome gift when you quote promo number 110. To find out more go to the Arena Sports Centre’s website at www. arenasportscentre.com or visit the Arena Sports Centre, next to the Regis School, Westloats Lane, Bognor Regis – Telephone 01243 870000.
` It's the time of year for overindulging, and that means it's also the time of year to make a resolution to get fit ` Special offers are available at the Arena to encourage you to become healthier and slimmer for 2017

A visually spectacular drama from the acclaimed director of THe Impossible, Juan Antonio Bayona. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the nocturnally visiting Monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth in a visually spectacular drama.
THrough a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organisation in the present day. THe film stars Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) and Marion Cotillard (THe Dark Knight Rises).

Scorsese’s dreams of bringing Shûsaku Endô’s novel to the big screen date back to the 1990s, but in the ten years since he announced his intent to direct an adaptation, any attempt to get production underway collapsed, putting his passion project on hold. Now, his twenty-year wait is finally over. One of the few blessings resulting from such a delay is the allowance of time for Scorsese to get a proper handle on the material and assemble a tantalising cast that includes Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, and Adam Driver.

Selsey have Storrington in sights after six goal mauling in derby SELSEY were smashed for six as East Preston showed no Christmas cheer in an SCFL Division One south coast derby. Joe Clarke got the Blues off to a flying start with a goal inside the first 60 seconds. But after that it was all East Preston, with EP scoring five without reply. Lukas Franzen-Jones bagged a hat-trick, while Jared Rance and Dan Huet each got themselves on the scoresheet. Selsey had a brief moment of cheer when Jake Ebling scored with five miniutes to go. But Huet popped up again as time ticked down to condemn Selsey suffered their heaviest league defeat of the season so far. THe loss sees Steve Bailey's young side drop into the bottom half of the table for the first time in a month. But they will have chance to bounce back on Monday, as the Blues host Storrington at the Bunn Leisure Stadium (11am). THe visitors have been in good form of late, unbeaten in nine and last losing in the league away at Seaford at the end of October. Bailey will be hoping his charges can put the bad result behind them and get their season back on track. When the two teams met earlier in the season it was a seven goal thriller.
f Chi (green) challenge the Pagham goalkeeper
Pagham strike late in Chi draw CHICHESTER City and Pagham shared the Christmas spoils in an 1-1 draw on Boxing Day. THe fierce rivals pulled no punches in the match which saw third play fifth in front of a bumper crowd at Oaklands Park. In a game short on quality, the home side spurned a number of chances to take the lead. THeir endeavours were eventually rewarded when a Keiran Hartley strike ten minutes from time looked to have secured all three points for the Lillywhites. But Lions striker Scott Murfin replied late on to ensure Mark Bennett's side made the short trip back to Nyetimber Lane with a point. THe result means both Chi and Pagham lost ground on SCFL Premier leaders Shoreham and second place Haywards Heath Town, who both won on Boxing Day. THe Lions in particular have a lot to do - with a disappointing December seeing them slip from third to fifth. At the turn of the year, they
sit 16 points off top spot with their hopes of promotion to the Ryman South looking a distant dream. Pagham have a chance to get their season back on track on Monday, welcoming Wick to Nyetimber Lane (11am). THe Lions won the return fixture in September, thanks to a Scott Murfin strike on the stroke of half time. A follow-up victory will set Bennett's side up nicely for a trip to Haywards Heath on January 7, when a win is a must if Pagham are to keep up their hopes of a promotion push. Meanwhile, Chi will be looking to close the gap on the sides above them at Arundel on Monday (11am). Miles Rutherford's side are unbeaten in the league since the start of September, and are bookies, favourites to win the match against a side that are struggling towards the bottom of the league. THat would set his team up nicely for the FA Vase last 32 match with Devon-based Buckland Athletic at Oaklands Park on January 7.
Joe Warner and two goals from Matthew Searle put Storrington in the driving seat. But Selsey matched them all the way, with Ryan Chittock and Joe Clarke, as well as an own goal seeing the Blues draw level with 20 minutes to play. However, a late strike from Warner saw Bailey's side come out worse off in one of the matches of the season so far in Division One. Late goals and a lack of consistency have haunted Selsey this season and stopped them from making a serious push up the table. THe curse struck again against Steyning Town just before Christmas, pictured right. THe visitors were gifted a fourth minute lead as a misplaced pass was intercepted by Charles Romain, who went on to finish. Howard Low had the home side level on the half-hour, before Selsey took the lead for the first time four minutes before the break through Tom Groom. But a late strike from Lewis Levoi with just four minutes to go meant that the Blues had to settle for a point, for the sixth time so far this season. With up to four games in hand on sides around them, there is still a chance of a Selsey surge up the table as the season moves into its second period.
Bosham beat Sids to go clear BOSHAM have taken an eight point lead at the top of SCFL Division Two after beating second-place Sidlesham 3-1 on Boxing Day. THe Sids' were full of hope before the match that home advantage would give them an edge over their local rivals. A Tom Bayley penalty early on gave Daren Pearce's side the lead after 20 minutes. But Bosham bounced back, with Callum Fewell and Bradley Miles netting twice within the space of three minutes to give the Robins the edge at the break. Alex Barnes then sealed all three points for Andy Probee's side meaning they end 2016 unbeaten, winning 15 of their 16 games so far. THe Robins do not have long to get back into action, hoping to carry on their good form against Clymping at Walton Lane on Monday. Sidlesham, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they make the short trip to Rustington. Both games kick off at 11am. Elsewhere, and West Sussex Premier side Nyetimber Pirates warmed up for their fifth round Sussex Intermediate Cup tie with Sidlesham with a comfortable 4-1 win over Holbrook. Towers, Turner, Cox and Haga-Hammond got the goals for the Bognor Regis-based side to ensure they remain well clear at the top of the table. With nine games gone, the Pirates have an
f Sidlesham (yellow) put Bosham under pressure (pic: Tommy McMillan) unblemished record scoring 30 goals in the process. In the same division, Predators saw their game against Henfield postponed. But there was some festive cheer for bottom side Hunston, who got a one-all draw at Rogate 08. THe point means they have five points, three behind Petworth who are second bottom. In the FA Women's Premier League south
division, Chichester City Ladies went into the Christmas break on the back of a 5-0 win over Keynsham Town. Molly Clark bagged a brace while there was one goal each for Charley Wilson-Blakely, Jess Lewry, and Cherelle Khassal to keep Chi top of the table. Next up for the ladies is a home match against Shanklin, which is scheduled for the new year.

f Ed Sanders nets the Rocks equaliser against Havant & Waterlooville on Boxing Day
Sanders' strike sees Bognor hold Havant to a draw to stay second Next Game
Met Police (A) tomorrow | 3pm
IT was a Boxing Day spectacle everyone was looking forward to - and Bognor did not disappoint holding Hawks to a one all draw in front of a bumper crowd of more than 1,300 at Nyewood Lane. With the ground buzzing at the prospect of seeing second play third in the Ryman Premier, players from both sides gave their all to produce a nervy but enthralling contest Ryan Woodford gave the visiting Havant & Waterlooville the lead just before the break. But a goal from Ed Sanders in the second period earned the Rocks a point and kept Jamie Howell's side in second, two points ahead of their Hampshire rivals and three behind Needham Market in top spot. On reflection, most at Nyewood Lane will be happy with the result against a side that has spent big in a bid to return to Conference South. Among them were Rocks old boys Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior, who both started for the visitors. But it was Bognor who had their chances early on. First, James Crane had a driven shot saved by Ryan Young in the Havant goal. THen, a forward ball by James Fraser found Alex Parsons on the run but he, unfortunately, lost control of it with the Hawks defence stretched. Havant then took control - with Rocks' goalkeeper Dan Lincoln having to push over
a cross from Alfie Rutherford on 12 minutes. On the half hour, Lincoln was called into action again saving low down from Prior who had beaten Sanders. THe visitors' pressure paid off just before the break when Lincoln's punch saw Ryan Woodford rush in and head the ball into the net out of the goalkeeper's reach. It remained that way until the hour mark when a short corner gave James Fraser space out wide. He then fired the ball across the goal which found its way to Sanders, who slotted it in off the post. Both sides had chances to win the game. Lee Molyneaux scored for Havant on 73 minutes but he was called offside as he timed his run wrongly before volleying in beyond Lincoln. At the other end, Fraser did well to pass out wide to Harvey Whyte and his cross eventually fell to Ollie Pearce in space. But his curled effort was well saved by Young. Jimmy Wild then forced the Havant keeper into a fingertip save after he slammed the ball towards goal on the rise. Havant did try their best to put some pressure on at the other end. But neither of the sides could get the winner and a draw was a fair result in the end. Next up for Bognor is a trip to Met Police tomorrow before visiting Worthing on Monday.
Rocks' squad all set for tests BOGNOR'S small squad is set to be tested in the coming days as the Rocks face two tough tests in three days. First up for Jamie Howell's side is a trip to Surrey to take on Met Police tomorrow (3pm). THen, comes a local derby in the form of a trip to Worthing on Monday (3pm) in a match fans are dubbing "El Classicoast". With a smaller squad than most in the Ryman Premier, Howell knows that he will be needing every single member to be ready to step up when called upon as the games come thick and fast in the festive period. His task has been made easier in recent weeks with the return of a number of players to the first team fold. Harvey Whyte is back in contention for a starting place while Jimmy Wild has recovered from a facial injury suffered in training. THere is also a boost with Gary Charman looking fit again after nine weeks out with a leg injury. All three got some match action in Bognor's 3-0 win against Horsham in the Sussex Senior Cup. Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "We have some big games coming up, some tough, tough games against Met Police and
Hill Town and a 4-0 thrashing of Lowestoft, a Worthing. "I need to make sure that the players we side that beat Bognor just a few months ago. THat good run has lifted the Rebels to tenth, put out there are ready both physically and a position they will want to hold on to after mentally." THe match against Met Police tomorrow will securing promotion from Ryman South last certainly be a test, despite the Imber Court year. With a decent Nyewood following set to side sitting fourth bottom. THe Surrey side have lost just once in seven make the short trip to Woodside Road, the games in all competitions, that defeat coming stage is set for a cracking game to kickstart 2017 for Rocks' fans. last time out to local rivals Leatherhead. Among the stand out performances during that time was a 2-0 win against Leiston, who are one of a number of teams who are pushing Bognor at the top end of the table. Worthing are also on a good run of form, having won six in a row in all competitions. THis includes two succesive f Bognor celebrate Sanders' equaliser vs Havant wins over Burgess
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and I wish all the best for the New Year to all readers. I just hope that at the turn of the year, my team will continue to perform as well as before the end of 2016! On our way to Folkestone Invicta on the fans coach, it was widely agreed that people would take a point from this match. It looked as though we wouldn’t even get a draw at half time. THe team was 1-0 down with no light at the end of the tunnel in sight but in football you just never know. How we were wrong! It was truly a game of two halves! THe team showed terrific character to come back into the game. As it turns out all of the other five top teams won that day so the win turned out to be more crucial than first expected. On the other hand it was typical that they all won after such a performance as that but it shows the competitiveness the league has this season. On the way home, and with those three points in the bag, discussion turned to the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup game the following Tuesday. Rocks were home to Horsham in the 3rd Round and expected to win. I was glad to see Gary Charman return to playing. He only featured in the first half but it was a positive sign. It was also a chance to rest some players and the management team took full advantage of this. THe win means Bognor take on Shoreham away in the Quarter Finals of the cup, which will be not be an easy game. Shoreham are flying in their league at the moment so it could be a potential banana skin. With some big clubs still involved its sure to be a tough Semi-Final for the winner. But the one we’d all been waiting for finally arrived on Boxing Day. Rocks welcomed Havant & Waterlooville to Nyewood Lane for this highly anticipated fixture. THe Hawks were doing well leading up to
this game with ex-Rocks Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior, as expected scoring regularly for the visitors before making the trip to Bognor. THey were listed as starting in the game against us. No surprise there. As most predicted it was a very equal match with Bognor going behind on 42 minutes just as I was expressing it would be nice to go in 0-0 at the break to my colleagues in the press box. Ryan Woodford put the visitors in the lead. But Bognor came out stronger in the second half and equalised on 62 minutes with Ed Sanders again on the scoresheet. THe action was good and with a crowd of 1,348 it was a great atmosphere. I think the important thing now is getting results elsewhere during the rest of the year and that will prove to be the difference as to whether we will be in the top five or not. I shall look forward to the return tie at West Leigh Park in April though - I still think we have a good chance of beating them at their place. Stand out players over the past two weeks have to be Ollie Pearce and Ed Sanders. Both have really been on form recently and long may this continue. Defensively Sanders does so much for the team, whilst its also good he is chipping in with goals as well. Pearce is doing really well too and was our main threat throughout our game at home to Havant. As long as he avoids injury i am sure he will bag some more goals. Don’t forget the earlier kick offs at Metropolitan Police’s Imber Court ground on New Year’s Eve and also the ‘ElClassicoast’ against Worthing’s Woodside Road on Monday 2nd January - both kicking off at 1pm. I’ll see you on the coach to Met Police and I’ll make my way to Rebel country too! Can’t wait! UP THE ROCKS
