THe conditions of the buildings gave a terrible impression of the town to people, he said at the first general meeting of the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District (BID).

“THe council should issue the formal notices (to smarten buildings) on themselves. THere are smashed windows and fly-posting on these buildings.

“We’ve heard at this meeting from

people setting up a website to encourage visitors and that is crucial.

“And I know Arun has been busy with THe Arcade and can’t do everything, but they could at least keep these buildings tidy.

“Arun have considerable powers as the landlord to force the owners of the leases of these buildings to act but they have failed to do so and it’s absolutely disgraceful.

“What sort of messages do those buildings send to those coming to our town? THe site is the first thing they will see when they get off their coaches.”

Volunteer wins national award DEDICATED Bognor Regis diabetic Tara Lawrence has won an award for sharing her experiences of living with the condition.

Primary school teacher Tara, 24, has received the Supporting Diabetes UK Inspire Award in recognition of her hard work.

As well as telling people about living with diabetes, she also helps children and young people with the condition.

Tara was diagnosed with a rare form of diabetes - maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) - in 2010 when she was aged 16.

MODY is a rare genetic form of diabetes which is different from both the Type 1 and Type 2 forms of the blood sugar condition.

Tara supports Diabetes UK and helps at events held for people with Type 1 diabetes to offer them the chance to meet others in the same situation and share and learn from their experiences.

But they can take place only with a team of volunteers. THey are either healthcare professionals or diabetics or their family members.

She said: "Diabetes UK is the only charity in the UK that supports all type of disabilities. As I have a rare form of diabetes, it is important to me to support a charity that is supporting me, too.

"Type 1 events are also often the first time that the family have been able to leave their child with other people without worrying or thinking about diabetes constantly.

"Allowing the parents to have some time without thinking about diabetes 24/7 helps them, and it shows the children they can do anything their friends do as long as they manage their diabetes with it."

Tara began to volunteer in 2013 because she wanted to meet other people with diabetes after she was unable to attend one of the charity's events for young people.

"I was really excited when I found out that I could volunteer. It seemed ideal that I could volunteer with children as I was training to be a teacher at the time," she said.

Jill Seaton, Diabetes UK's head of south east region, said: "THrough our Inspire Awards, we thank our hardworking volunteers, like Tara, for their contributions, and celebrate the positive difference their work makes to the lives of young people living with diabetes.

"Tara is a young, dedicated volunteer who has reached out to young people, helping to organise events.

"She has already helped us with 11 Type 1 events all across the country in just five years, which shows her passion and enthusiasm in helping support young people and their families."

THe Inspire Awards recognise and celebrate outstanding individuals as well as group volunteer efforts.

OWNERS of seven Felpham beach huts have been faced with repairing the damage caused by a burglar.

THe seafront properties on the eastern greensward near Sea Road were targeted one night last week.

No major items appeared to have been stolen but the contents of some of the huts were re-arranged by the intruder.

Geoff Farrell, a committee member of the Felpham Beach Huts Owners' Association, said he had spent £40 buying new locks for his hut.

"THe person who did this has come along with a bolt-cutter and a jemmy bar to gain entry. THey obviously went

along with intent. To have seven beach huts targeted out of 79 is very unusual," he said.

Mr Farrell said the break-ins and attempted break-ins occurred overnight last Tuesday and Wednesday. THe beach hut owners were contacted about the crime by the land owner, Arun District Council. He praised the council's response to the incident.

An Arun spokesman said: "THe council would encourage the owners of the beach huts targeted to report the incident to the police to help with the investigation, if they have not already done so."

Town's regeneration delayed in the Post

f John and Janet Mace with the 1964 edition of the Bognor Regis Post A SURPRISE find has brought a smile to a North Bersted man.

John Mace was stunned to discover a front page headline in a copy of the original Bognor Regis Post stating ‘Development A Step Nearer’.

It could be a copy of a local paper from the past few years – but it is edition number 2,225 dated Saturday, November 28, 1964.

THe report details how the then Bognor Regis Council had backed an idea by West Sussex County Council for a three-level construction between THe Esplanade and Belmont Street.

It would accommodate parked cars on the ground and first floors and pedestrians on the second.

“From the pedestrian precinct with its shops and other buildings, bridges would take one over the Esplanade to a promenade, reached from the beach by ramps and escalators,” it says.

THe Esplanade would be kept as a through road. Bognor Regis Council’s clerk, Paul Smith, said: “It will be the only town in the country, almost certainly the only one in Europe, with a decked seafront.”

But it was never to be – and the seafront has remained free of escalators and pedestrian bridges.

Mr Mace also found another partial copy of the Bognor Regis Post from the following month.

“I went out to the garage to sort some of my books out and the papers were in between them,” he said.

“As soon as I saw that front page, I thought about the regeneration schemes that have been proposed."

Former plumber Mr Mace, 81, of Markfield, moved to Bognor Regis with his family in 1945, having been evacuated to Hereford from London during the Second World War.

He and his wife, Janet, 79, lived in several addresses around the town before they moved into their current home seven years ago.

He said: “THat regeneration in the paper has not happened in 54 years and I wonder if I’ll see anything in my lifetime."

Another eye-opener was the number of adverts from traders around the town.

THey include THe Camera Shop in Station Road, Cleeves Cameras in London Road and Dugdales cycle shop in London Road.

“THe adverts brought back a lot of memories. Out of all those shops, there are not many remaining now,” he said.

Mentions of THe Rex Ballroom and THe Esplanade THeatre also made Mr Mace think about the town’s past.

“We’ve lost so many of the entertainment venues,” he said. “What is there now for people to do on the seafront in the rain or the winter? We had plenty of places to go.”

PEOPLE in housing need are to live in a restored house in Bognor Regis.

THe derelict building has been brought back into use after Arun District Council served its previous owner with an enforcement notice to stop the property becoming the centre of anti-social behaviour.

THe property in Canada Grove was then sold to a syndicate which began extensive refurbishments last February to bring it back to a habitable condition.

Its seven bedrooms are set to be let out to people around the town.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said: "Having this empty property back in use so that people in need of housing can settle and make a home is vital.

"I would encourage anybody that knows of a property that is standing empty or abandoned, or may need help with a property of their own, to get in contact.

"THey may be able to make a difference by talking to us about getting that building back to a condition where it can be lived in again."

THe house had been empty and derelict since 2013. THe district council had received a number of complaints from members of the public because of its poor condition.

THis began to attract anti-social behaviour and continued unauthorised access by drug users, to prompt regular calls to the police and

fire and rescue service.

An Arun spokesman said: "Despite many attempts to engage with the owner to commence work on the property, negotiations proved inconclusive and the council took formal enforcement action to make the property safe and bring it back into habitable use.

"An improvement notice was served on the legal owners in June, 2017."

After the new owners had taken control, the council's empty homes officer, Helen Stevens, returned to the property this month to see all the renovations required, pictured below, under the notice had been carried out.

` Gardens meeting A PUBLIC meeting is being held in Bognor Regis next week to save one of the town's open spaces.

Liberal Democrat district councillors are staging the event at 7pm next THursday at the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road.

THey have organised the meeting to gather support to stop plans by Arun District Council to create a linear park on the Hothamton car park and Sunken Garden.

THe Lib Dems say people's dislike of the linear park proposals has been ignored by the district council.

THey will launch a petition against the proposals at the meeting.

` Council surgeries TOWN councillors will be holding two surgeries around Bognor Regis in the next week.

Members of the town council will be in the London Road precinct from 10am to midday on Tuesday to meet residents and listen to their complaints and suggestions as well as being sited next to the promenade play area from 2pm4pm on THursday.

THe sessions follow the success of the first surgeries held by the council last summer.

` Vehicles entered A PURSE and loose change was stolen when two vehicles parked on the drive of a property in THe Grove, Felpham, were broken into overnight on May 25.

More homes for parishes PARISH councillors around Bognor Regis were today being asked to make room for more housing.

Members from some 16 parish councils across the Arun district were due to meet Arun District Council to discuss potential locations for the 1,250-plus homes.

THese are extra dwellings to those intended for the three large-scale housing locations intended for Pagham and one in North Bersted which have provoked thousands of protest letters.

Today’s session was being held

by Arun’s planning officers as the countdown continues to the publication of the government inspector’s report of its land use blueprint, the local plan.

THe inspector, Mark Dalkeyne, is due to issue his verdict next month after he conducted a public inquirty into the document last September.

But the council has included a commitment in the local plan to provide housing at sites smaller than the larger, strategic locations for 1,200 homes in Pagham and 2,500 in North Bersted among others.

It is the smaller sites - which will accommodate less than 300 homes which will be discussed today.

An Arun planning officer, Kevin Owen, told the council’s local plan subcommittee on Monday: “THe meeting will be attended by 16 parish councils.

THat leaves another four to respond. We have been chasing them up.

“THere is interest in the meeting

because it is about our non-strategic (smaller) sites development plan document.

“We will get a better feel from that meeting what the attitudes and aspirations of these parishes will be.”

Martyn White, an Arun principal planning officer, said seven parish and town councils had ‘responded postively’ to the council’s request to review the sites they had allocated for housing.

“We have asked the parish councils if they want more housing and where they want them.

“Some of them want to see how the local plan pans out before they come back.”

Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E) said: "I think most town and parish councils want to see what is happening with the local plan before they make any commitments."

He said the council needed to show it had a consistent method for allocating the housing on the most suitable sites.

“THe aim of Friday’s meeting is to start that process. THe councils have asked us what we think their figures will be.”

Any schemes that came forward for the land would still need planning permission from the council.

Sub-committee vice-chairman Cllr John Charles said: “We have these meetings quite regularly and this is one of the major things we talk about.

“THe average seems to be about 16-17 parish councils.”

Tireless Tyler honoured by Queen for his charity work

AN INSPIRATIONAL brain tumour survivor from Barnham has been honoured by the Queen.

Tyler Murphy, 21, received a British Empire Medal in the latest Queen's Birthday Honours List.

THe award acknowledges his work in helping to support children with brain tumours and other life-threatening diseases.

His time in hospital battling his condition led him to set up Tyler's Trust to send out gift boxes to children in a similar situation.

Tyler, of Orchard Way, said: "I am over the moon to receive this award - and I really hope it helps to raise awareness about what it's like to live with a brain tumour."

Tyler's proud mum, Jan Ellis, 50, said: "When we got the letter about his award, I couldn't read it out to him because I was crying so much.

"Everyone who meets Tyler loves him and this is such a tribute to his courage.

"Despite his own awful personal challenges, he always looks for the positive and has helped hundreds of children and families.

"I couldn't be prouder of him and he inspires me every day."

Cllr Gillian Brown was given the honour for her services to local government and the community in West Sussex.

She has represented Aldwick East ward since 1991 and became Arun's leader in 2006, with an emphasis on planning, housing and economic regeneration. * Services to the arts in Bognor Regis saw Hazel Latus awarded a British Empire Medal in the honours list.

Mrs Latus has been heavily involved with the town's Regis Centre as a volunteer for eight years and the past five years as the chairman of its operator, Arun Arts.

She is also the centre's operations manager and the executive producer for its Alexandra THeatre.

Peter's run for hospice SELFLESS cancer patient Peter Chittenden is staging a charity run for his 80th birthday to help children battling the condition.

Middleton resident Peter is holding the run on June 24 to raise money for the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice.

He said: “THis might well be my last run. I’ve been struggling with prostate cancer for a number of years, which has spread to my bones.

“I’ve been told it’s a terminal illness and there are no more treatments available.

“I wanted to celebrate being 80 and I thought, as it might be the last run I do, it would be nice to raise money for the children’s hospice.

“I’m been thinking of myself and my cancer and there’s a lot of children with cancer as well – and I wanted to help them.”

Kind-hearted Peter has teamed up with some running friends, who operate businesses in the sport, to organise the run on June 24.

It will start at 10am at Arundel Cricket Club and follow a circular off-road route through Rewell

Wood. Bespoke medals have been produced for each finisher.

Peter has more than 50 entries so far and is hoping for 100. He has asked for a donation of at least £10 from each person taking part.

His 80th birthday was last January 20 but he decided to stage the run in mid-summer to enable the ground to be firmer.

“We are hoping we can collect a tidy sum for the hospice,” he said. “I’ve been there and to see the children and their families and how they are suffering is life-changing. THis run is my way of giving back to the children. It’s better than sitting at home and thinking ‘Why Me?’.”

Peter is also a keen member of parkruns, the free 9am Saturday runs, which include Hotham Park in Bognor Regis. He said: “I’ve completed 170 parkruns so far and my challenge is to get to 200. I usually go to Bognor Regis but I’ve also been to the parkruns in places like Chichester, Havant and Portsmouth.”

THe Post highlighted how the seafront was blighted by the former arcade and its decaying neighbour in one of the paper’s first editions in May, 2016. THree months ago, the Waterloo Square mini-golf course operator also called for the area to be regenerated.

On the corner of Waterloo Square and High Street, the former No 18 youth centre is also empty.

An Arun spokeman said work to refurbish No 18 Waterloo Square would start next week. Action was also being taken on the other premises concerned.

"THe council are the freeholder of a number of premises in Waterloo Square. THese premises are, however, all let on long leases.

"THe maintenance and repair obligations for these premises rests with the current leaseholders as defined under the lease and so this aspect is not the responsibility of the district council.

"THe council is being proactive, working together with the current leaseholders, in order to facilitate redevelopment of the site," he said.

"Council members have agreed in principle to dispose of the freehold of the relevant council premises in this area in order to provide clean title on the site, specifically to assist in bringing forward redevelopment of this area of the town."

THe BID formally started work last April 1 after business owners in its area from the Royal Norfolk Hotel to Butlins and the University of Chichester decisively backed its formation. It is funded by a 1.5 per cent levy on their business rates.

Firms get plea over homeless A PLEA has been made to ensure a security service by Bognor Regis business owners treats homeless people with respect.

Members of the town's business improvement district (BID) were told at their first general meeting work to ensure the town centre was a safe and welcoming place should not be at the expense of those sleeping on the streets.

Stonepillow chief executive Hilary Bartle said it was important the security warden was aware of how to treat homeless people.

"I want to make sure we are engaging with you, particularly around the warden scheme," she said. "If people don't know how to deal with rough sleepers and street drinkers properly, it can lead to problems.

"I am really keen to engage with you on something that is really important.

"THe people who are here are staying here, they will certainly remain here and their problems exist here.

"THere needs to be a way of integrating them into the community so they can feel an integral part of it."

Paul Wells, chairman of the business improvement district, said: "THere are a few of us who deal with homeless people and street drinkers on a day-to-day basis.

"I know some of them on first name terms. It's about knowing how to handle them with conflict management. We will certainly engage with Stonepillow."

THe security warden forms one part of the four-section action plan agreed by the BID members.

THis was to create a safe and welcoming town centre, improve parking, grow the night-time economy and promote a

positive image for the town.

THe meeting was the first to be held by the business improvement district's board since they formally began work last April.

Some 50 members attended the event at the Regis Centre last THursday.

THey were told by town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, how the action plan was to be carried out.

As well as the security warden, the scheme included linking with the Love Bognor Regis website, taking over running the two-hour free parking scheme from the Bognor Regis Traders' Association and working towards a national accreditation scheme for a safe night-time economy.

He said: "THe next stage is to start taking action and start delivering this plan. We have five years. It feels like a long time but it will really fly by. By three years, we need to show members the BID is working and gives you value for money for the levy you are paying."

THe 1.5 per cent levy on business rates will generate £141,519 a year for the five years of the BID. A further £30,000 would come from the free parking discs, £10,000 for retail training and £2,000 from markets.

Mr Rahman said 30 of the 416 commercial properties in the BID area were empty for a 7.2 per cent vacancy rate, which compared well nationally.

BID chairman Paul Wells welcomed the host of new businesses in the past year.

He said: "I get a real feeling there's a buzz in the town. THe vacancy rate in the town is quite positive.

"We now need to build on that and maintain it in the five years that the BID is in place."

Dog show returns in Felpham to raise money for animals MUCH-LOVED pets will be welcomed at a revived dog show in Felpham.

Residents' group Snook's Corner Community Group is staging the event after the success of its initial occasion in 2016. THe latest show will take place from 11am on June 23 at Longbrook Park off Sea Road.

A spokesman said: "THe event is open to all dogs and is an 11-class fun companion dog show.

"Pet dogs, show dogs, pedigrees and crossbreeds, young and old, will all be welcome on the day."

THe show is in aid of the RSPCA's Chichester-based Mount Noddy

branch, which is self-funded.

Competitors for the dog show should simply arrive on the day at 11.30am and enter their chosen classes for £2 a class.

Judging will start at midday.

"THere will be classes for veterans, dogs, bitches, fancy dress, waggiest tail, best trick and much more to provide something for everyone," said the spokesman.

Rosettes will be available for prizewinners. Businesses, residents and supporters have backed the event.

MORE than 100 shoppers in a Bognor Regis store were given advice about how to avoid being conned.

THe event at the Tesco store in Shripney Road was held to raise awareness about online scams and being safe online.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice was joined by West Sussex trading standards officers as well as the county community safety and wellbeing service for the occasion.

Ken Porter, of Citizens Advice, said they were pleased about how the occasion last THursday was received by customers.

"Residents were most interested to know how to avoid uninvited telephone calls and to get safe online.

"We managed to have good conversations with over 100 people."

THe event was staged last THursday to mark national scams awareness month.

It was followed by another at the Tesco Extra in Chichester yesterday.

People learned about the common signs of a scam, such as receiving an offer that sounds too good to be true or being told to pay in advance for goods or a service.

THe final event will take place at Morrisons in Littlehampton from 10am1pm on June 28.

In the past ten months, Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice has provided help to more than 50 residents who had been affected by some form of scam.

"Scams in the area range from one local person losing over £7,500 in a financial fraud to local people losing money in upfront deposit and rental payments for houses that, in the end, were not on the market for rental," said Mr Porter.

"It is important to protect passwords and user-IDs as we are now starting to see the first signs of social media identity theft and, as a result, all personal details are being abused by the scammer."

` Manager's move TOWN centre manager Toyubur Rahman is on the move in Bognor Regis.

Mr Rahman is setting up office in the kiosk next to the Picturedrome cinema. THe vacant premises on the corner of Linden Road and Canada Grove were last used by a shop selling body-building supplements.

He has been based at the former visitor information centre in Place St Maur for the latter period of his four years in the role. But the centre closed last January 31.

His new premises are owned by Bognor Regis Town Council and are separate to the cinema's operation.

Brilliant students on course for uni POTENTIAL undergraduates have been visited by schools minister and Bognor Regis MP Nick Gibb.

THe Year 8 and 9 pupils at THe Regis School are involved with THe Scholars Programme - a prestigious national scheme which gives school pupils a chance to experience university-style learning.

THe programme recruits, trains and places PhD researchers in non-selective state schools to deliver university-style tutorials based on their research to small groups of pupils.

THose who met Mr Gibb are studying Engineering - Illuminating the Body with their tutor, Edward O'Garra-Priddie, from Sussex University.

As part of the programme, the pupils will also visit two highly selective universities where they find out about life studying for a degree.

Mr Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "I was very impressed at how the pupils engaged with such a complex and challenging academic topic. It just goes to show what young people from Bognor Regis and Littlehampton can achieve if we give them the opportunity.

"I wish the pupils the very best for the future, and I encourage more schools to give their pupils the chance to benefit from this programme."

THe Scholars Programme is run by THe Brilliant Club. THis is an award-winning charity with the aim of increasing the number of pupils from underrepresented backgrounds who progress to highly-selective backgrounds.

An independent evaluation of the scheme showed nearly 60 per cent of pupils who complete it attend a highly selective university.

Town tribute to the forces pier, will take place at 2pm.

THe day's events will start at 11am with a performance by the skiffle band from the town's RAFA branch.

A range of stalls by cadet groups and service support organisations will be around Waterloo Square gardens and the Silhouette singers will bring the era of Vera Lynn, Buddy Holly and Billie Holliday to life.

THe afternoon will see the RAFA Choir providing entertainment on the shore at 2.45pm, with a cadet drill competition, the air cadets' band and a a PT display, before the day is brought to a close at 5pm by singer Sarah Saville.

Military vehicles will also be on show.

A TRIBUTE to Britain's armed forces is taking place in Bognor Regis this weekend.

THe town's annual Armed Forces Day will take place in the Waterloo Square area on Sunday.

THe highlight will be the parade and drumhead service for veterans and cadets. THey will form up at the seafront bandstand to march off at 12.30pm along the promenade to the pier.

THe drumhead will be set up for the service to begin at 1pm in front of the pier.

It will be followed by the presentation of Veterans' Badges.

All the world's a stage as London shows come to the town's carnival THERE were nun better at the Bognor Regis Carnival than one of the town’s day centres.

Portraying Sister Act brought a double success at this year’s event for the Laburnum Centre and Gym. THe 42 members involved with the float based on the hit musical won the prize for best overall entry, as well as winning the senior club and group category.

Sarah Smith, the centre’s manager, said: “None of us here can remember the centre being awarded the prize as the best entry in the carnival.

“It feels amazing and we are all absolutely made up about it. Our entry was a major team effort. Everybody chipped in and did their jobs in the right place at the right time.

“Entering the carnival is about getting out in the community and showing people that we provide services and facilities for the over 50s.

“We have a great social atmosphere where people can meet people and come along on their own or as a couple.”

THe gaggle of nuns on the float and surrounding it along the parade route was one of the largest in last Saturday’s event.

It was the fourth of the annual occasions to be held by the Bognor Regis Carnival Association.

Just under 40 entries took part to make it the largest the team of volunteers had organised. THey went along the seafront from Gloucester Road to West Park via Aldwick Road and Nyewood Lane.

Seven colourful, and often noisy, floats

provided plenty to see for the thousands of spectators who lined the route. THey each brought their interpretation of the West End show theme to life alongside the walking entries.

South Bersted C of E School chose Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

For Bognor Regis Scouting, it was Les Miserables and Cats among others and Bognor Regis Swimming Club chose Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Mamma Mia! was the choice of the Chestnuts Day Centre and the Regis Centre portrayed its summer show in August to scoop the first prize for the best local or national trade tableaux.

Its operations manager, Hazel Latus, said: “We are thrilled to win a first prize in such a wonderful parade as this. Our float took a lot of work by a lot of people, such as Maureen Dillon.

“It’s important we take part in the carnival. It lets people who are from outside the town, as well as local residents, know what we are doing.

“THe carnival is good for the town. You can’t beat seeing all these people smiling and enjoying themselves.”

Other entries included Girlguiding, the Arabesque School of Performing Arts, the Bognor Regis Kite Festival, St Wilfrid’s Church’s family support work, Razzmataz THeatre School, the Rich and Tremblar family from Bognor Regis, the town’s RAFA 381 branch and Bognor Regis WI. THe parade was led by the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band.

and around the arena at West Park. THey included a dog show with at least 80 entries. THe prize for best young handler was won by Jessie Sturridge, ten, with two-year-old cockapoo, Lottie.

She said: “THis is the only prize I’ve won with Lottie and I’m really happy. I kept her close to me and kept saying ‘heel’ to her.”

Carnival association chairman Steve Hearn said: “Our thanks go to everyone for helping to make this year’s event the biggest and best we have held.

“It’s been a fantastic day and the floats were fabulous. THere were a great variety of West End shows and a lot of hard work went into them.

“We will be back next year, hopefully, even bigger and better. But we could do with some more volunteers. THere are only seven of us and it takes a lot of work to stage an event of this size.”

` Councils' review A FINAL chance is on offer for residents of Barnham and Eastergate to comment about plans to merge their parish councils.

THe last consultation stage is being carried out by Arun District Council after its members provisionally agreed to the merger going ahead.

THe deadline for representations to be received by Arun is the close of business on June 19.

THe parish councils asked Arun for the authority to merge. An initial consultation showed 80.56 per cent of residents who voted in favour of the move.

Arun said a review of the change showed the potential improvements to community engagement and local democracy which would result from the councils joining together to end residents' confusion about the parish in which they live.

Arun councillors will consider the result of this final review. If they agree to the merger, Barnham and Eastergate Parish Council will come into effect from December 1.

` Award for carers VOLUNTEERS with the county council's Young Carers Service have won a prestigious award.

THeir efforts have been recognised with the Queen's Award - the highest accolade for people who give their time and skills for free to help others.

Two of the service's 40 helpers Ian Lockwood, of Chichester, and Small Dole resident Lynda Sample - attended a garden party last week at Buckingham Palace to accept the award.

Two FAB helpers are thanked TWO LONG-STANDING volunteers have spoken about their pleasure in helping children around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Jean Aston and Michelle Crowley have each provided support for disabled young people for 15 years.

THey began to volunteer for the Fun and Breaks (FAB) service of West Sussex County Council on the same day in 2002.

Volunteers with the service spend time with disabled children, enabling them to have fun, to enrich their lives and to learn new skills, while giving their families a break.

Chichester resident Jean began to volunteer after she had retired and has remained close to the families she has supported. THey include a girl who is now in her teens.

Jean, a former children's nurse at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, said: "She's like a second daughter to me.

"Her mum introduces me as her foster mum, which is lovely. It's very rewarding and I've made some good friends out of it.

"I took a break when my husband died but, when I came back, I found the family I'm with now and it's been brilliant.

"We just clicked. I collect him from school once a week and then we go back and play."

Michelle, of Bognor Regis, has an equally positive but very different experience.

She volunteered for FAB just before she got married and volunteered around a busy full-time career while she raised two young children.

She has taught a young child how to swim and takes him to a pool once a month.

She said: "It's a lovely feeling knowing you are helping that child have some fun and some stimulation.

"I get to teach a child a life skill they would not have without my input."

Fun and Breaks offers training to help volunteers understand the impact of disability on the life of an individual and their family and works to ensure good matches which work for both families and volunteers.

"THe priority is getting the match right," said Michelle. "As a volunteer, you always feel safe you will be matched with the right family.

"Some of the volunteers are students or just people who enjoy working with children and may be want to give something back.

"I have had experience of children with disabilities in my own family. So, I know how much it can take out of a parent and how small things make a big difference.

"I would really encourage everyone thinking about becoming a volunteer to give the team a call and they will be happy to talk it over."

FAB volunteers support disabled children from birth to 18 years old.

By giving them access to social activities to build their confidence and independence, children make friends and learn new skills.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, county council cabinet member for children and young people, said: "What Jean and Michelle, and indeed all of our FAB volunteers, do in giving up their time for free to help children and their families who need a bit of support, is so important and makes a real difference to people's lives."

Town's fun on the prom site officially open OPEN AIR playtimes have become better in Bognor Regis.

THe town's Play on the Beach site has attracted thousands of users since it recently opened.

THe free attraction was formally brought into use by Arun District Council's chairman, Cllr Alan Gammon, as young children played on the equipment behind him.

Among those eager to use the site was Tangmere childminder Emily Holmes and the children she was looking after aged one, two and three.

She said: "THis is the first time I've been here. It's a great idea. It's always nice to have something else to do with the children.

"THere's always been a lot of people here whenever I've passed by.

"It's good that there's a lot of different sizes of equipment for little ones and the older ones.

"It's nice to be on the seafront and not to have to pay money for everything you do with the children."

Play on the Beach is located next to the Beach on the Beach sandpit, opposite the Place St Maur, which Arun opened in 2015 and extended in 2016 because of its popularity.

Its success led to the district council

spending ÂŁ110,000 on Play on the Beach after 95 per cent of replies to its survey last August and September backed it.

Cllr Gammon said last Friday: "THere was previously no free-to-play equipment in the central area of the promenade in Bognor Regis between the pier and Butlin's.

"Since it opened to the public a couple of weeks ago, the play area has been extremely busy and the council has had some great feedback from parents.

"THe provision of such equipment on the seafront is extremely positive for visitors and the residents of Bognor Regis alike."

THe play area measures 11m x 39m. Its imaginative designs include the use of sea creatures in keeping with the theme chosen by residents in the consultation.

It is packed with equipment for children to climb, clamber and swing on. THe items include equipment like a wheelchair roundabout for children with disabilities.

Arun director of services Philippa Dart said: "We are absolutely thrilled by the success of this play area in this fabulous location.

"It forms part of our regeneration proposals for Bognor Regis. We are always keen to see how we can improve facilities for residents and visitors, and especially for young people."

THe event at the Bognor Youth and Community Centre will feature an appearance by martial arts expert Matt Fiddes.

One of his schools is running the occasion to raise funds for the centre and its operator, Bognor Community Action Network, which works to help people in deprived areas of the town.

Kendra sees stars at reception for Unicef UNICEF UK young reporter Kendra Diston has met sporting and music stars through her work helping others.

Bognor Regis student Kendra attended a glittering reception held by the UN organisation at 10 Downing Street.

She was called an inspiration for her efforts as one of THe Regis School's Rights Respecting Ambassadors which led her to play a leading role in the publicity for Sunday's Soccer Aid football game.

As reported, Unicef filmed Kendra on a visit to Lesotho in Africa to see the difference Unicef was making to the lives of its young people.

THe match at Old Trafford in front of the game's biggest crowd of 71,965 spectators saw England and World teams of famous faces take each other to raise more than £5.5m money for Unicef's campaigns to help children in the developing world.

THe England team won on penalties after a 3-3 draw in normal time.

Among those playing and attending the reception were singers Olly Murs and Robbie Williams and world-class athletes Usain Bolt, pictured right, and Mo Farah.

Kendra, 13, said: "I was star-struck to start with, as so many people I recognised from TV were interested in my story about the Unicef in Lesotho.

"I couldn't believe they had heard about my trop and were asking questions about my work as a young reporter for Unicef.

"It was a real privilege to represent Unicef UK and THe Regis School and to meet celebrities like Usain Bolt and

Robbie Williams.

"But the most humbling and memorable moment was when another school child said she had seen my film and thought I was an inspiration to her."

Prime Minister THeresa May also cited Kendra's work during her speech to the guests at the reception.

"Soccer Aid combines the excellent work of Unicef with the generosity of the British people matched by the British government - and together we save lives and create new opportunities for thousands of children across some of the poorest parts of the world.

"And, if you want to know what that can really mean - just ask young Unicef reporter Kendra Diston who is here with us today.

"She flew out to Lesotho and met Alice and Lindi - two girls like her who, thanks to the work of Unicef and UK Aid, no longer have to walk for an hour to get water, and now have toilets in their local school."

THe past 12 years have seen Soccer Aid raise £24m to support vulnerable children around the world.

THe Regis School was chosen by Unicef UK to promote Soccer Aid because its work for UN's Rights of the Child is highly rated.

Kendra dedicates many hours to her role as a Rights Respecting Ambassador at the school in Westloats Lane.

THis has seen her help to plant 2,000 crocus bulbs to beat polio, collect

and deliver 2,000kg of food to the town's foodbank and make the three documentary films for Unicef.

An assistant principal at the school, Caroline Saunders, said it was extremely proud of Kendra.

"Kendra absolutely embodies what the Rights Respecting School programme is all about.

"It allows all children, whatever their background, to dare to believe they can achieve their dreams," she said.

Trust celebrates 20 years A SPECIAL occasion has been celebrated by volunteers dedicated to improving the jewel in the crown of central Bognor Regis.

Trustees and members of the Hotham Park Heritage Trust enjoyed its 20th anniversary event on Sunday.

THey met in the park's lodge, which is the trust's base, and a glass of Pimms was followed by a ploughman's lunch, rounded off with a celebratory cake and champagne.

All the catering was prepared by members and they filled the lodge and its courtyard, which had been decorated for the occasion.

In the afternoon, they sat at the park's bandstand for entertainment by Beaten Tracks International.

Trust chairman Rosemary Warren was presented with a bouquet to thank her for her commitment to ensuring the heritage of the park remained at the forefront of the trust's work. She has chaired the trust for the past nine years and said the commitment of its members was the reason for its success.

by West Sussex County Council in time for this year's national bike week.

THe schemes are in Arundel Road, Fontwell, and Worth Park Avenue, Crawley, and were finished last month.

A third project, alongside the A259 between Flansham and Climping, is in its final stages of construction after a series of delays.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "Cycling helps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and is a great way to increase physical activity and wellbeing."

Last year was a record-breaking one for the Bikeability training in schools and for adults by the county council's team of cycling instructors.

A total of 9,801 people received training during 2017/18.

THe trust has been involved in many projects in the park. THey include a children's play area, in its early years, and the Alice in Wonderland wooden sculptures.

A SERIES of events is being held around Chichester and Bognor Regis to celebrate Sussex Day. Tomorrow's occasion aims to make the best of the county on St Richard's Day to mark the life of a renowned Bishop of Chichester from 1245 to 1253.

University looks east with new connection f Supporters of Powerful Trainers show its benefits

Experts created by health project CLOSE working with health professionals has enabled people with learning disabilities at the Aldingbourne Trust to manage their healthcare for the first time.

THe charity, based on the outskirts of Chichester, has worked with the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust to support those who use its services to become more involved in looking after their health.

THe health service officials have given the project's members the status of 'experts by experience'.

An Aldingbourne Trust spokesman said: "Powerful Trainers, who are part of the Aldingbourne Trust, along with Sussex Partnership NHS Trust, have set up the Springwell Project.

"THis enables people with a learning disability and complex needs, along with their families and carers, to express their thoughts, develop their understanding of the healthcare services they have received, share their experiences about what has and hasn't worked for them, and discuss ideas for positive change."

Feedback was gathered from oneto-one sessions, families, friends and carers, focus groups and a staff focus group. THis work has enabled people with a learning disability and their families to understand and prepare for the referral and assessment process.

THe NHS authority has employed someone who has a learning disability to lead and continue the work.

FORMAL links have been set up between the University of Chichester and Chinese academics.

THe collaborative international partnership will see the university develop collaborative and studentprogression projects with Guangzhou Sport University.

THe Chinese university is located in

the Guangdong region of China and has about 8,000 students. It is the only independent public university of sport in southern China.

Under and postgraduate programmes, which specialise in sport-focused disciplines, are offered. THey include science, education and media subjects.

A University of Chichester spokesman said: "THe purpose of the visit was to meet key academic staff from Chichester to discuss further collaboration.

"THe Chinese delegation spoke about their interests in developing

a partnership with the university to collaborate on research projects across various sports disciplines, which could open avenues from Guangzhou to learn at Chichester."

Prof Yongdong said: "THis is an exciting new collaboration that will bring our knowledge of sport and learning together for the first time."

He met with Prof Harper and Professor Mike Lauder, of the university's institute of sport, to learn about Chichester's sports programmes and modern facilities.

CHALCRAFT HALL Care Home manager Sara Whitworth is someone whose job is very much a labour of love. That much is evident when you hear her speak so passionately about the residents at the North Bersted home.

Sara oversees the day-to-day running of the care home which considers its patients as very much part of "one big family". That family consists of 20 folks living with dementia as well as the 25 caring staff members who see to their every need Sara explains: "We have a busy diary with the emphasis very much on maintaining a home-from-home atmosphere. Twice a week we have musicians come in then we have singalongs with music right through from the 50s to the 80s, which is very popular.

“The residents love singing along to the songs. They know all the words. We’re certainly not a home where the residents sit around bored all day.”

"Relatives often join us for the activities, and these also includes quizzes, bingo and periods of time for reminiscences."

Sara's comments come after the home made substantial investment to improve the care on offer.

She adds: “It’s all about creating the best first impression we can. The old drive was deteriorating and required upgrading, which we are always committed to doing here. Replacing it has opened up the entrance to the home and made it safer and easier for visitors.

“We listened to feedback from our

residents’ relatives about the need to improve the old entrance. It took three months from its planning to completion, but it was well worth the effort.”

But, as important as initial impressions are, Sara is equally aware standards inside the home must be maintained to a high standard as well.

Chichester’s newest cafe now open for business Funky eatery boasts a mouth-watering menu with tempting treats CHAMPAGNE corks popped, delicate and delicious canapés were served and a party atmosphere prevailed as Boston Tea Party, Chichester's newest cafe, opened its doors for its official launch bash.

And the funky BTP eatery is very much now open for business and expecting a roaring trade at its impressive premises in the city's Baffins Lane. Marketing manager Ben Hibbard and his hard-working and affable team were on hand to greet guests who were treated to drinks and nibbles as they got the chance to see exactly what diners can expect.

THe BTP chain started in Bristol around 23

years ago, explains Ben, and now boasts 22 venues dotted over the country. THe name comes from the act of rebellion in the USA in 1773 and was chosen by the original owners all those years ago; and the name stuck.

Classically British (despite the name) BTP says the mission is "to serve simply and wellprepared food and drinks made with great ingredients, skill and love. Ethically sourced, affordable, feel-good, great value, healthy and excellent quality – made on site every day".

Now BTP is open in Chichester and Ben says he is delighted with the response so far -- with more of the same expected! He added:

`Boston Tea Party opened yesterday with a ban in place on all single use coffee cups.

Make sure your bones are always healthy and strong KEEPING your bones healthy and strong is a vital part of staying well, and can ultimately avoid pain and discomfort.

Osteoporosis affects over three million people across the UK, with more than 500,000 people receiving hospital treatment for fragility fractures every year as a result.

THis condition develops slowly over time and is often left undiagnosed until a fall or impact causes a bone fracture. THis is because osteoporosis is a condition that weakens the bones. Losing bone mass is a natural part of the ageing process.

However, some people do lose density faster than normal, which leads to osteoporosis and an increased risk of fracture injuries. Women are more at risk of the condition because they lose bone density rapidly in

the first few years after going through menopause.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, there are two types of exercise that can help combat the condition: • Weight-bearing exercises – Activities that involve moving against gravity while staying upright.

• Muscle-strengthening exercises – Activities that involve moving the body, weights or other forms of resistance against gravity.

Bones are made from a matrix of collagen, produced

by Vitamin C, into which bone-building materials such as calcium, magnesium and potassium are deposited. Although they seem the strongest and most enduring part of us, our bones are in constant flux, endlessly being destroyed and re-created. Cells called osteoclasts are the bone destroyers, whereas the osteoblasts create new bone – but age slows down this sequence of destruction and renewal.

It is for this reason bones become porous, brittle and prone to fracture and when bone loss has outpaced the growth of new bone.

Weight-bearing exercises, such as walking, combined with eating sufficient protein, for example, stimulate bone growth. Getting enough Vitamin D helps calcium to be absorbed into the bone, while the hormone oestrogen and drugs called bisphosphonates inhibit bone breakdown.

B vitamins assist your body’s methylation and keep your homocysteine level ideal, which also helps to inhibit bone breakdown.

MATTERS oenological led me to a Lidl store to look at their summer collection and I perused the white wines to select a few.

My first selection was that of a Portuguese Vinha do Rosário - an example of a skinny wine (i.e. lower alcohol of just 10.5 per cent) for those watching their calorie intake.

Elderflowers and nuts pervade this delightful wine sporting a slightly musky flavour and it is an ideal wine for a lunchtime tipple!

My second selection was a 2017 Gavi of Italian provenance priced most competitively at £5.99 and proving to be fresh and juicy, medium-bodied with citrus notes and hints of cooking apple -

great with sea bass!

My favourite white wine selection, however, turned out to be a 2016 Les Aubrières Val De Loire Chardonnay and, bemused by the provenance, I had to sample a bottle!

THe Loire region is quite far north for vineyards, but consequently produces crisper, fresher Chardonnay with peachy fruit to the fore and worth every penny of

the £5.99 price - a great summer wine, à mon avis!

Lastly, I espied a Pinot Gris, not the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio (yawn!) in the form of a 2017 New Zealand Gisborne Pinot Gris retailing at £6.99 and noted its clean acidity allied to a dash of chardonnay and gewürtztraminer combining to add depth and a touch of peach to more customary apple and

grapefruit flavours - good New World Pinot Gris!

In terms of reds, an outlay of just £3.99 is sufficient to purchase a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo - a most gluggable red with morello cherry to the fore and great value-for-money!

For just an extra pound, the 2017 Olas Del Sur Merlot from the Valle Central, Chile, surpassed my expectations with its fruity and juicy nature and note of smoky oak and would pair delectably with burgers, pulled pork or lamb chops - a steal at this price!

For another pound expended, the 2016

Clostre Brunel Saint-Chinian turned out to be a skilfully balanced red with fresh and ripe bramble fruit added to a medium-bodied texture, good acidity and modest tannins.

My final red selection of a 2018 Marco Tempranillo straying much further from its usual homeland popping up in Australia and afforded a little extra power by the addition of 15 per cent ruby Cabernet - a cross between Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon - classic soft fruit plus touches of cocoa and vanilla define this fine grape export! My boomerang is in transit!

Community News & Views FAIRIES were to the fore when Chestnut Tree House children's hospice joined forces with Disney.

THe famous film company organised a wonderful fairy and pirate-themed party at the hospice near Arundel, pictured below.

A magical environment was created in the garden of the hospice with balloons, Disney music and bubbles, with children wearing fancy dress and a visit from Tinkerbell.

It gave families the chance to spend some time together among some beloved Disney characters and stories.

Janet Parsons, the hospice's head of communications, said: "For the children and families who need Chestnut Tree House, it is all about making every moment count - the good days and the not-so-good days, living for the now.

"THank you so much to Disney UK for bringing some special moments to Chestnut Tree House and creating some very precious memories for our children and families."

THe hospice was one of four at which Disney staged the parties.

Each was planned to create special family moments that could be shared and highlighted the company's commitment to the Together for Short Lives initiatives, the UK charity for seriously ill children.

Disney UK's director for charitable programmes, Sara Hanson, said: "By working with Together for Short Lives and children's hospices, we can create moments that matter for children and those closest to them when they need it the most."

THe party was staged during the national children's hospice week. Barbara Gelb, chief executive of Together for Short Lives, said: "Children's hospice week is still the only week in the year dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the lifeline children's hospice services across the UK and the thousands of seriously ill children and young people that they support."

HIGH quality teaching has led the Chichester Colleges Group to a silver rating.

THe first major higher education review since Chichester College and Crawley College merged saw the rating awarded for the standard of lectures, learning and students' progress.

Independent experts carried out the assessment under the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

THe framework was brought in by the government last year to monitor and assess the quality of higher education teaching at colleges and universities.

Shelagh Legrave, chief executive of the Chichester Colleges Group, said: "To receive a silver rating in our group TEF review is a terrific result for us.

"It is a direct reflection of the efforts and dedication of our staff, across Chichester and Crawley colleges and at our Brinsbury campus. THey regularly go above and beyond their duty to ensure our students receive an outstanding education."

THe framework is delivered by the Office for Students through a mixture of academics, students and other experts.

THey use criteria that covers teaching quality, learning environment and student outcomes by taking evidence from national data and information submitted by the colleges.

For the Chichester Colleges Group, they stated 'most students, from all backgrounds, achieve excellent outcomes'.

THe findings also highlighted the 'planning and support for progression to higher education of a diverse local student population'.

THe results and the evidence used to compile them are used by students to decide which university or college to apply to as well as encouraging high standards of teaching and learning across the UK. Last year's initial review of Chichester College resulted in a silver award.

UNIVERSITY of Chichester lecturer Dr Naomi Foyle, pictured above, will seek Arabian inspiration for this year's Blake Fest in Bognor Regis.

Dr Foyle is set to travel to Palestine late next month for the Jerusalem and Ramallah launches of A Blade of Grass: New Palestinian Poetry.

She edited the book last year with the help of a university research development award.

She will be travelling with Rachel Searle, a director of Blake Fest, with whom she is planning a Jerusalemthemed event for this year's celebration of William Blake and his works on September 15 in the Regis Centre.

THe festival will focus on the impact of Blake's work on the sixties and will feature new wave scene leading figure Lene Lovich, the music of George Harrison from the All THings Must Pass Orchestra and jazz from Emily Dankworth.

It will be the fourth staging of the quirky music festival.

AN AUTHOR is appealing for help to find the daughter of a deceased sculptor who lived in Chichester.

THeodore Itten is seeking information about Ferelyth Wills (1916-2005), who spent her last years in the city.

He is jointly writing a biography on Francis Huxley, pictured above in 1990, and Ferelyth knew his father, Sir Julian, and his mother, Lady Huxley.

Dr Foyle was a guest at this year's Babylon Festival for International Cultures and Arts.

THe week-long event is held in Babil, in Iraq, the ancient ruins of Babylon, near the modern city of Hillah, 100km south of Baghdad.

THe festival celebrates Iraq's ancient role as the cradle of civilisation and its enduring cultural and intellectual wealth.

Dr Foyle helped to launch the festival and read at work at a later poetry event held in an ancient temple.

"I have returned home uplifted by the sense that, after decades of war, occupation, looting, and terrorist attacks, Iraqis are drawing on their ancient heritage to reclaim and reinvigorate their modern identity," she said.

THe Festival Foundation aims to persuade Unesco to grant Babylon the world heritage status that has not yet been possible because of damage sustained to the site during years of conflict.

Switzerland, has joined with Ron Roberts to write the book with the proposed title of Francis Huxley and the Human Condition: Anthropology, Ancestry and Knowledge in the next 18 months.

Francis Huxley was a social anthropologist and the book will reflect on the contemporary relevance of his work.

Dear Sir, I read with utter disbelief your article entitled On the Right Track concerning the new timetables brought in by Southern. I don't know who the paper's been talking to, but it certainly isn't any one of the commuters that I travel with! THe journey home isn't too bad, except for the fact that, at peak times, passengers for the stations between Chichester and Havant have, mostly, to change trains at Chi so we cross fingers every night that we'll get our connection, whereas before the 36 past the hour trains from Victoria were stoppers, which was much better.

THe mornings are another story. THe 6.23am from Fishbourne to Victoria saw 12-15 people catching it every day, arriving at 7.58. Every one of those people, me included, is, to say the least, inconvenienced by the changes, to the point that now there are only three or four people for the 6.05am and the 6.29am.

Where are these people now? Going to Havant to use South Western Trains? Driving? Great. THere isn't enough pollution in the air or too much traffic.

THe 6.05am goes to London Bridge, which means changing at East Croydon and then standing for the rest of the journey. East Croydon is heaving these days as so many passengers have to change now whereas before they didn't. People get that train because the next one, which does go to Victoria, now leaves at 6.29am, but doesn't get in until 8.12am. THis is a huge difference in the morning and has made everyone either late for work if they get the 6.29am or change at Croydon if they get the 6.05am. A lose-lose situation.

I go to London four days a week to make eight return journeys.

During the first two weeks of this fiasco, the 6.05am was cancelled once, the 6.29am was late three times and the 7.33am was late once. So, five of my eight journeys up to London made me late.

As a teacher I can't be late - the bell rings and I must be there.

When I went to managers' meetings at Victoria, twice I was reassured by different mangers that nobody needed to worry as no train would be moved by more than five minutes. Blatantly untrue. We'll see how things pan out but to say everyone is 'pleased to see these improvements' (Mr Tupper) is simply wrong. THe morning trains just do not leave or arrive at the times people need. I do not think that there should be any patting of backs, rather plenty of knocking heads together!

A WEBSITE for young people is set to be created by Bognor Regis Rotary Club.

Its new president, Peter Wells, has outlined the project as one of his goals of his year in office.

THe club's press officer, Peter Wells, said the website would be a continuation of its work with young people around the town. THis included the annual Rotary in Arun Community Youth Awards.

"We will work to identify and support individual young people in challenging circumstances or suffering hardship and liaise to enable them to access opportunities that would not otherwise be open to them.

"THe number of young people that the youth service committee is in touch with continues to grow," he said.

"Last year, we set up and ran the awards website and Facebook account. THis year, we intend to develop the committee's use of social media by establishing a Bognor youth website."

Mr Wells, pictured above right, received his reins of office from the outgoing president, David Cousins.

Another initiative he hopes to implement is to establish a club with THe Regis School and Felpham Community College to strengthen its links with them.

He stressed the Rotarians' links with the community should be enjoyable and, in most cases, fun, as they seek to help in all aspects of community life. Most of their work would benefit Bognor Regis but responses would be made to disasters around the world.

Publican turned pub into first class attraction Richard Sharpe stamped his interest on his watering hole THERE have been many public houses in Bognor Regis which have changed their names during their existence, but some are still remembered by one particular event or claim to fame. THis is certainly the case with THe Rising Sun. THe Chichester Road leading out of the town was an obvious place to have a drinking house and, of course, there were numerous possible sites along this road in 1895. Richard Sharpe opened a grocery store an inn at the location which became THe Rising Sun and is now a Tesco Express.

Its claim to fame was postage stamps and it was a place where thousands of visitors made it one of the town’s most extraordinary and unique tourist attractions.

Mr Sharpe was born in nearby Hunston.

He was a man who enjoyed music and was known to play the cornet in a number of local bands. With his interest in music, Mr Sharpe was also responsible for forming the Bersted Brass and Reed Band, which was known for many years as Dickie Sharpe’s Hog-weed Band. THe uniform worn by the bandsmen was blue with red piping on the jackets plus a red trouser stripe. THey used the rear garden of the pub to practise.

Gradually, as they became more proficient, they gave performances at garden fetes,

garden parties and other events all over West Sussex and they became more famous.

Mr Sharp also collected postage stamps and this was to form the basis of his future fame.

As the years progressed, his stamp collection grew and he began decorating a few picture frames with his stamps. THen, in 1882, a customer bet Mr Sharpe he would not be able to cover part of a room with stamps, within a time restriction.

Mr Sharpe was to take up this challenge - as anyone would - and with 76,795 stamps he succeeded in covering all aspects of the room by sticking the stamps on all the walls and obviously won his bet. But of course this was only the start. Little did his customer know what he had started with his challenge!

As time progressed, and notable events occurred, Mr Sharpe was to continue covering items such as tables and chairs with stamps. When the village of North Bersted had planned nothing for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, he thought he could produce his own memorial, which would also further extend his hobby of stamp collecting.

He was to stick stamps all over a complete room from floor to ceiling. However, it did take him five years to complete. It was not a random task of sticking the stamps on walls.

He wove designs with the stamps, such as

the words 'Jubilee Stamp Room' on one wall.

Another wall displayed a large star design and the Bognor coat of arms was displayed above the fireplace. Other displays included a picture of Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales Feathers.

It was estimated more than two million stamps were used and the estimated value, during the 1920s, was in the region of £28,000.

It was a continuing interest and, as more visitors came and its fame grew, people began sending stamps for his use. Sometimes, full sacks of stamps arrived at the pub.

During its heyday, THe Rising Sun was mentioned in many publications recounting that it was ‘one of the sights of Sussex’. Mr Sharpe also received letters from all over the world regarding his unusual art form.

He was not to stop at one room and he started to cover chairs, tables, a candlestick, a tablecloth, a hat and even a bust of King Edward VII did not escape. His coverings then extended into a corridor and even continued out into the summerhouse in the garden.

Eventually, in the 1920s, Mr Sharpe retired. By then, over three quarters of a million visitors had seen his stamps and written in the 24 visitors’ books. THe signatures included such people as members of Parliament, Sussex nobility, and justices of the peace. By 1929, it was claimed that 764,580 visitors had signed the books.

At one time an unnamed ‘visitor’ produced a small pamphlet, which was also undated. It was entitled The Jubilee Stamp House and is a unique memorial of the late Queen Victoria’s reign. THe front cover included a paragraph stating it was 'an interesting description of

the most curious room in the world, at ‘THe Rising Sun,’ North Bersted, Bognor, and it was illustrated with four photographs.”

THis visitor wrote 'the little Sussex village of North Bersted, Nr. Bognor, boasts the possession of a remarkable room, which has probably no equal in the world'. THe publication continues: 'THe Jubilee Stamp Room, the designation by which it is now known by thousands, is at the Rising Sun, a wayside inn, a comfortable walk from Bognor.

THis pamphlet is published in response to the desire expressed by great numbers of visitors for a souvenir of their visit'.

Richard received and used stamps from worldwide destinations and some attached to one of the doors included quite rare stamps from Australia. He apparently received many offers for this particular door, with the purchasers willing to remove the door, there and then, to take it home with them.

With the ever-increasing number of stamps that he received, it became impossible to paste all the stamps on to walls, doors or items so he started to thread them and made them into bundles to festoon around the walls. Some bundles were suspended from the ceiling - one of which is thought to have contained more than 60,000 stamps.

Finally, the pub closed, the building started to decay and eventually it was demolished in 1957 to make way for today’s building.

When THe Rising Sun was opened after a refurbishment in 1983, it was renamed Stamps to celebrate the historical background of the establishment.

Next it became known as the Bersted Tavern before it was replaced by the Tesco Express.

Falcons soar to two wins and seal PostSport a double over Solent and Pompey CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club executed a furious smash ‘n grab double in Portsmouth, taking them to 2 & 1 for the season.

Up first were Portsmouth Dodgers, historically the Falcons’ bogey team, who have won all previous encounters.

But, batting first, Chichester went right after the Dodgers outfield and hit three runs in the first inning, including a two-run homer from Dave Piesse.

THey then limited Portsmouth to just one, which turned out to be the Dodgers’ only run of the game as pitcher James Wheeler ploughed through their line-up. He was helped by a running full-stretch catch in centre left by David Morris.

Seven runs were added in the third as the Dodgers began to falter, third baseman Oliver Howley pounding another home run through right field.

Umpire discussions about the mercy rule began as early as the bottom of the third inning, after outfielder Bronte Harvey crushed to centre field. THe Falcons adding a further 12 runs to take the score to 22-1.

THe hit parade continued in the fourth as the Falcons clobbered another seven, before

the umpire stopped the game early at 29-1 to Chichester.

Following a short break, Solent Sluggers took the field against the Falcons.

Traditionally a big-hitting team, Sluggers set out for their long-ball game but the Falcons were prepared and shifted the outfield extra deep. THe plan worked and, again, Chichester shut out their opponents following another outfield catch from Morris, who ran halfway to the infield to snag the lead-off hitter.

Catcher Keaton Irvine slogged herself onto first ready for the dependable James Mortimore to steer a three run homer and the Falcons were soaring again.

18-6 up by the fourth inning, Chichester slowed a little despite fleet-footed Anne Rutherford reaching second on one out, but Lucy Morris and Veronika Green kept control at first and second respectively to keep the game out of reach for the Sluggers.

Going into the final inning defending a ten run lead, a few nerves frayed in the Falcons infield as Solent hit three. But Wheeler snatched a high slice right to the pitchers mound to end the game and seal a 19-13 victory to the Falcons.

DARTS: Aldingbourne Mavericks' Emma Bist sprang a surprise to deny Hayley Gatford a sixth Bognor Summer Darts women's knockout crown.

THe tournament, which took place at the Newtown Social Club, saw 12 players take part.

THe first round saw the 2007 champion, Paula Duckett (Aldingbourne Mavericks), exit the competition.

But nothing could stop five-time champion Gatford (Hunston Hares) from making it to her ninth final in 11 years.

She faced 2014 champion Bist in the final - and it was the Maverick who made the stronger start, hitting a ton and 127 to leave just 50.

Gatford closed in, though, but a missed treble 20 blew her chances of a 130 outshot. Bist then only needed two darts to take the first leg.

THe second leg saw a steady game from Bist, but Gatford found her form with 100, 140 & 100 on the trot, leaving 56 which she got in an 18 dart leg.

THe decider saw both players neck and neck. With 80 left, Gatford missed the bullseye with her last dart to take the win, leaving Bist to hit double 17 with

THE historic Solent Sunbeam fleet celebrated 95 years on the water with a weekend of excellent racing on Chichester Harbour THe special 95th Anniversary Regatta saw 19 of the class take to the wet stuff in sunshine and moderate breezes for the special event.

Designed by Alfred Westmacott in 1922, such is the longevity of the class that the first of its type, V1 Dainty, was racing at the weekend aged 95 years old against a one year old boat!

THe first day of competition started in cloudless skies and moderate 15-knot breezes which increased to 20 knots during the course of the day.

In the first race, Julian Money, sailing V42 Penny, raced into an early lead. But Roger Wickens in V26 Danny soon forged ahead.

Behind Penny, Tim Hill in V25 Query pipped V68 Sky on the finish line for third place.

In the second race, there was some close racing between Danny and V18 Polly sailed by Nick Leach. THese two had a good lead over

the chasing pack and they finished first and second respectively.

THe second day dawned windless but, after some delay, a light breeze emerged.

With the tide ebbing, this put a premium on fast downwind sailing and the marks consequently became fiercely contested.

Danny led from the first mark followed closely by Polly and these two maintained their positions until the end. Unfortunately for Polly, she was disqualified for being over the line at the start, giving second to Penny.

With three first places, Roger Wickens in Danny secured the regatta victory with one race to spare. In the final race, Query and V14 Jabberwocky, sailed by Mike Weston, led from the first mark and kept their positions until the end. Behind them, Danny and Polly had another close tussle but Danny prevailed in the end.

Query's win boosted their overall standings sealing second, just one point ahead of Penny, who was also one point ahead of Polly.

THe same evening also saw 32 players take part in the Over 50s knockout.

After some high scores in the early round, the first semi final pitched Larry Chant (Aldwick Legion) against Ashley Clements (Royal Oak).

A ton and a 140 from Chant in the first leg saw him take the lead, but Clements (Royal Oak) came back to take the next two legs and the place in the final.

He took on Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) who overcame Graeme Dutton (Newtown Clubbers) in the second semi with a 2-0 win.

THe Chi player made the stronger start with scores of 84, 85 and 140 setting up a finish. He took the leg at his second attempt.

THe second leg saw Clements with the better start, hitting 92, 95 & 171.

And although Robinson hit 95, 100 & 140, it was Clements who took the leg in 21 darts.

THe last leg saw Clements take the early lead with 87, 79 & 83, but Robinson found scores of 81, 100, 96 & 79, leaving 40, which he hit in two darts, for a 20 dart leg to retain the Over 50s knockout champion title.

Bognor look to end two match losing run away at St James's

All set for the Midsummer 5 HUNDREDS of competitors are revving up to cruise round Goodwood Motor Circuit.

But this is not a race that will be dominated by fast acceleration and horse power a plenty; it will be one that will see people propel themselves around on two feet.

Next Wednesday sees the popular five mile event known as the Midsummer 5 to return to the famous track.

Organised by Chichester Runners, nearly 300 adults and juniors took part in the event last year which starts and ends at Lavant Memorial Hall in Sheepwash Lane.

From its earliest beginnings, the event has established itself in the summer road racing calendar, attracting athletes from across the region.

Now in its 31st year, organisers will be hoping for dry warm weather as entrants try and beat course records dating back to the 1990s by Tom Buckner (24 min 34 secs) and Zara Hyde (28 min 4 secs).

Up to 100 youngsters are expected to take part in the one mile fun run with a further 200 on the full route.

THe race starts at 7.30pm and entry of £12 for affiliated runners includes the price of a

burger and a beer. On the day entries are available. * Chichester Athletics Club's youngsters will be hoping for an improved performance as they head to Poole for the latest National Youth Development League Fixture tomorrow.

Newly-promoted Chichester have found things tough in Division 1 so far this year as many of last year's squad have moved up to higher levels.

THey will be looking to improve on the last meet in Horsham when a largely inexperienced squad of 30 put in some strong efforts in the under 13s and under 15s categories.

Among the pick of the performances were newly crowned U15 Sussex discus champion Oliver Beach, who won with a winning throw of 33.65m, a new personal best throw which ranks him 15th in the UK; and Millie Grant, who sealed three well deserved second places in shot, discus and hammer.

In the under 13s, Fionn O’Murchu and Josh Dunne formed a strong pairing in the boys 800 metres while Gabriella Styles led the club’s sprints supported well by Lucy Hollyer and Grace Bishop.

BOGNOR Regis CC will be looking to snap a two match losing streak when they head to St James's Montefiore tomorrow (12.30pm).

After a promising start to the Division Two campaign, Ryan Maskell's side have stuttered in recent weeks, which has seen them slip to fifth in the ten-team division.

THe poor run continued last time out when despite a brave captain's display from Maskell, Bognor slumped to a 104-run loss to league leaders Billingshurst at the Regis Oval.

After winning the toss and electing to field, the home side's bowlers struggled to make headway against a strong Hurst battling lineup. West Indian Marquino Mindley (2-53) was the pick of the Bognor bowlers but they were unable to stop Billingshurst from reaching 208 for seven with Tim Weston (76*) the standout performer.

In reply, Bognor struggled to get going. Two early wickets left them at 11-2. And despite skipper Maskell leading from the front with a quickfire 42 from 53 balls, the rest of the Bognor line-up struggled to give him support.

Only number 10 Jamie Woolnough (18) reached double figures as they were bowled out for 104.

Middleton still waiting for win

BOTTOM side Middleton CC are seeking a much-needed win to revive their Sussex Premier Division campaign.

Sean Heather's side are yet to find their feet in the county's top competition and currently sit adrift at the foot of the table.

Last weekend's six wicket loss to Eastbourne at Sea Lane was the third in the row for Middleton. But they can drag themselves off the foot of the table tomorrow if they can seal a positive result away at second-bottom Cuckfield (12pm).

With just 13 points separating them from

fourth-bottom Ifield, a 25 point win could see Heather's side zoom up the ladder.

Middleton will be hoping to see more of the same from Indian overseas player Mahesh Rawat, who scored his first century for the club against Eastbourne.

THe wicketkeeper's score of 100 not out anchored the innings for the home side. But, with only three other players reaching double figures, Heather's side could only reach 208 before being dismissed in the 49th over.

helping the visitors reach the total with six wickets to spare. Russell Talman (1-37) was the pick of the Middleton bowlers.

In Division Two, Chichester Priory Park face a tough task when they travel to third-placed THree Bridges tomorrow (12.30pm).

Jay Hartard's side are unbeaten in two after a creditable draw with Ansty last time out at Goodwood. A 151-run fourth wicket stand for the visitors looked to have put them in the driving seat. But Chi's bowlers hit back to four wickets for just 17 and restrict Ansty to 210 for 7 in 53 overs.

In reply, Jes Goode (36) and Sam Caldera (63) put on 86 for the opening wicket. But Priory were unable to string any more partnerships together and could only reach 171 for 6 before time ran out.

In Division THree, Pagham are seeking their second win in a row when they welcome THree Bridges seconds to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' XI will be buoyed after a remarkable nail-biting victory away at Goring last weekend.

A mammoth batting effort by number six Rico Webb (64) and David Leader at eight (41) took Pagham to 148 all out.

Webb then took on the Goring batters head on, taking four for 60. With Justin Webb (556) taking care of matters at the other end, Goring were bowled out for 142 to seal a six run victory for the Nyetimber Lane side.

Bognor bowled over

by Worthing Pavilion BOGNOR A men's team will be looking to drag themselves away from the foot of the table as they welcome bottom-side Worthing to Waterloo Square tomorrow (2pm).

A defeat by Worthing Pavilion A last week means that Bognor A are now second-bottom in the West Sussex Division One with 14 points from four games.

Pavilion won on three rinks, scoring eight points to Bognor’s two, with the only victory coming from K Hellyer, P Lichfield, M Philpot and J Whitfield who won 23-17.

Fellow division one side Chichester A play just their fourth match of the season on THursday when they welcome Pavilion B to Priory Park (2pm).

In division two, Bognor B will be looking to

lift themselves off the foot of the table when they welcome Witterings to Waterloo Square on Monday (2pm).

Some of the Bognor squad got in some positive performances when Godalming BC visited the club for their annual mixed friendly game. It was a very enjoyable game which Bognor won by eight shots. Bognor play the return fixture in August.

Meanwhile, the Bognor Ladies kept up their winning form in the Game, Set & Match league division one game against Crablands.

THey won on one rink and drew on the other, scoring five league points with Louise Saunders, Anne Parry, Margaret Phillips and Barbara Reardon winning 22-13.

Bognor boss backs Blake to get Rocks firing next season BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the club have made a real coup in snapping up their new first team coach - and is backing the former Premier League striker to help get the Rocks firing for the new season.

Robbie Blake took over the reins as a key member of the backroom staff last month after leaving League One Portsmouth.

With a wealth of football league experience behind him, as well as playing stints in the top flight with Bradford and Bolton Wanderers, Pearce says the former striker will be a big influence at Nyewood Lane.

Top of his challenges is solving the Rocks' shortcomings in front of goal, with Bognor netting less than a goal a game in the National League South.

However, it looks as though rebuilding for the return to the Isthmian Premier will not include last season's top scorer, Ollie Pearce, who looks unlikely to re-sign for next year.

Pearce said: "It's not very often first team coaches of League One sides come into a step three set-up, so we are extremely delighted to have him on board. As a forward who has played and scored at all levels,§ hopefully he can help us in the final third of the pitch where we struggled last year."

Pearce was alerted to Blake's availability by a contact at Portsmouth. With the former Bolton striker keen to stay in the area, the two met over lunch and agreed a deal.

Pearce said: "I told him it would be a learning curve and a bit different to what he's used to but hopefully he will enjoy it. It may be that he comes on the radar for other clubs but I hope he will be with us for a long period."

With the midfield and defence pretty much covered for the season ahead, Pearce and Blake are focused on improvements to the front line.

THis week the club confirmed it would run the rule over a proven striker with bags of National League experience when the Rocks return for pre-season training next month.

THe attacker, whose identity the club are keeping under wraps, is just one of an exciting crop of trialists bidding for a contract at Nyewood Lane.

Also vying to earn a deal is a promising young forward who bagged more than 30 goals for his club last season.

Pearce is also hopeful Jimmy Muitt will remain for another season. However, his strike partner for much of the past campaign, Ollie Pearce, looks unlikely to stay as he seeks a new challenge after six years at the club.

THe manager said: "It's an area we are looking to strengthen in as it's an area that we didn’t do very well in last year. It doesn’t matter how much ball you have, you need to score goals. I'm not panicking at the moment but it is an area that we know we need to improve on."

Pearce warns Ollie could be off HE HAS been a mainstay of the Rocks' recent triumphs, bagging crucial goals and assists and becoming a fan favourite in the process.

But, after six seasons at Nyewood Lane, could last season's top scorer Ollie Pearce be about to leave the club?

THe frontman endured a frustrating year in the National South as fitness issues and injury saw him restricted to the amount of football he played. Regardless, he still scored 11 goals, a fifth of the club's tally in all competitions.

With the Rocks rebuilding at step three, manager Jack Pearce was keen to retain his namesake to spearhead the attack.

But, after crunch talks this week, it appears as though the young striker could be signing on elsewhere.

Manager Pearce said: "I would be surprised if he signed for us as he wants to move on and he wants a new challenge.

"We do not want to lose him - he has served the club extremely well in the last six years and it will be a major disappointment if he leaves as the one thing you need is goals. He is still under 24 so we will receive compensation.

"In fairness to Ollie, we did not even get a chance to talk about money. He just said he wants a new challenge."

THE Rocks kick-started the summer with a real coup when they announced Robbie Blake as the new first team coach.

THe former Portsmouth man comes to Nyewood Lane with an excellent reputation for developing players and improving all aspects of their game.

As a former Premier League striker with Birmingham City and Bradford among others, he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Scoring 145 goals in 580 league appearances is not a bad return for a player who made his name as a striker who needed just once chance to get his name on the scoresheet.

His first break as a coach came at Chesterfield with Paul Cook, who then took him south when he moved to Fratton Park.

With this pedigree behind him, it was perhaps a surprise then that he took up the offer of Jack Pearce to replace the outgoing Darin Killpartrick as first team coach at the Lane.

However, in the first part of an extensive interview with the Post, Blake says that he can't wait to get started in his new role at Bognor.

How does it feel to be at Bognor?

Obviously it's a little strange at the moment with no training taking place and having not met the players yet but I'm really excited by the challenge ahead.

I just want to get started.

With pre-season a couple of weeks away, I'm just itching to get going.

How much did you know about the club before joining?

Obviously I've been down a few times before with Portsmouth in pre-season and been down a bit last year to see a few games and I've been really impressed.

good playing surface and Jack has got the team wanting to play good football which suits the way I want to play.

Was it an easy decision to make?

I had a really good meeting with Jack and liked what he said and how much he would like to have me involved. I saw it as a good challenge and another step towards more experience in my career as a coach.

How tough is it for an exprofessional to get started in the coaching game? Is dropping down the football pyramid essential to getting in the industry?

It's really tough for anyone to get going. It's one of those industries which is incredibly difficult to get in to.

When managers move, they normally take their own people with them.

THis means for a lot of young professional coaches who have just finished their playing careers perhaps they have not got as many contacts to help them get started.

For me, I just want to get that experience which will hopefully further my career in coaching as I progress.

What's it like working with Jack so far?

To be honest he's been different class.

We've had a number of good chats about football and the season ahead. We've spoken about how he likes the club run and how he wants to play good attacking football, which really matches up to the way I like to approach things.

He also does not seem frightened of me having my own opinion.

I've really enjoyed the time so far but I know it will be a bit different when we start playing and get going.
