THe work is aimed at breaking up the gangs who are bringing the illegal substances into the town.

Sussex Police Inspector Danny West said: “We have had reports of very overt use of Class A drugs and dealing in drugs going on in the streets.

“It is something we are looking into with

high visibility patrols but, sometimes, we might not be seen because we need to look at where the activity is taking place and who is involved.

“We work closely with our partners to identify the most vulnerable people in our community so we can give those people the right support and safeguard them in their homes.

“But we can also target the gangs who are coming down from London to our

Young people were being sent to the town, particularly from London, to work for the drug gangs, he told last week’s Joint Western Arun Area Committee.

“THis is an ongoing situation. It is happening today, tomorrow and the next day. It’s really important we look at who those vulnerable people are and give them every opportunity to make themselves safe,” Insp West said.

Students enter world of politics FOUR students from Westergate have been given influential political roles.

Ben Beckinsale, Holly THompson, Jessica Hayler and Ellis Brundle, of the Ormiston Six Villages Academy, pictured above from left to right, successfully campaigned for positions on the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and Youth Parliament.

In the youth cabinet elections, Year 10 student Holly and Ellis, in Year 11, were elected to represent the Barnham & Westergate constituency.

THey will take part in county-wide council consultations by presenting the views of young people as well as running their own campaigns.

Meanwhile, Year 10 students Ben and Jessica were chosen to be members of the youth parliament.

Ben is representing East Arun, Adur and Worthing, and Jessica has been appointed as the deputy member for Chichester and West Arun.

THey will represent the views of 11-18-year-olds in their constituency, work with local councillors, hold events, organise meetings and run campaigns.

THey will also attend an annual sitting of the youth parliament and a debate in the House of Commons.

Holly said: "We are all incredibly proud to have been elected and are looking forward to being able to influence social change and represent the views of young people in our constituencies."

THe students' election is part of a wider initiative at the academy which is aimed at teaching its Year 8-10 students more about politics and getting them excited about the political process.

THe success of the initiative has seen a 93 per cent turnout of students voting for their peers in the elections.

THe large amount of interest resulted in the academy earning a gold democracy from the government as part of a project to celebrate the success of schools that make an extra effort in equipping their students with skills and knowledge to play a full and active part in society.

Gaining the award enabled some students to tour Parliament and attend a workshop on democracy and voting.

THey formed and elected their own political parties, compiled policies and learned how the voting system works.

THe students were welcomed by a member of staff of their MP, Nick Herbert, who answered their questions about the world of government and politics.

Ormiston Six Villages Academy principal Umbar Sharif said: "I am extremely proud of our newly elected members and I am certain they will do a fantastic job of representing the young people of our community.

"THe students across our school have been phenomenal in engaging with politics and the world around them something we believe is essential to nurture and encourage."

ONE OF Aldwick's district councillors has pledged to take action to ensure a set of public loos is re-opened.

THe Arun District Council-owned toilets at Avisford Park recreation ground in Nyetimber Lane have been shut all year after their roof was damaged by vandals.

Cllr Martin Smith (LD, Aldwick W) told Aldwick Parish Council on Monday: "THe toilets at Avisford Park are still not open due to the roof needing to be repaired. I am trying my hardest to speed this work up."

Parish council chairman Cllr Lilian Richardson said: "THose toilets have

been closed for seven months now.

"Although we did agree we were going to contribute in terms of running costs, and in terms of capital outlay, we can't contribute anything if they are closed all the time."

She said the parish council had last been told work should start late in May. Sue Batey, the parish council's clerk, said she believed the matter was with Arun's property officials.

Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said he would try to get the work carried out in his role as chairman of the district council's environment and leisure working group.

Will's artwork is the pick of the country

Seanette looks to get ahead on own f Will Hodges in front of his masterpiece EYE-CATCHING art has seen a Bognor Regis student named as the best in Britain.

Will Hodges has been given the accolade by THe Regis School’s sponsor, United Learning Trust.

It looks after 45 schools around the country – with more than 36,000 students - and has chosen Will as the winner of its annual art award.

Will’s work has been on show in the school’s A-Level department and was judged by the exam assessor on Monday. He has created a giant piece of work, 180cm x 110cm, to challenge the art world’s traditional view of beauty as captured in portraits.

Will, 17, said: “I have been looking at how artists stereotype people in art and how to break that stereotype.

“I wanted to show that you still have

beauty within you no matter how you alter your face.

“When I started this project, I still had strong opinions about what I liked.

THat has been changed and, what I like about art, is that you can be realistic and non-realistic.”

Victoria Cameron-Laurie, the school’s head of art, said: “I am really pleased with the standard of work this year.

“We are so proud of Will. He has the highest standards of our students for the past few years now. He is a very easy student to teach.

“Will’s passion for art is amazing. He goes above and beyond expectations every lesson and brings an energy to his lessons that inspires his teachers and his peers.”

For his A-level work, Will produced designs for a city based on the theme of

freedom and limitations.

“I looked at cities, specifically New York, which has a lot of aligned buildings and the fact that people are occupying spaces, like tower blocks, which it is not natural for us to occupy,” he said.

His model reflected his ambition to become an architect and he has a university place lined up for this autumn if he achieves his predicted A-level results.

Mrs Cameron-Laurie said the exhibition consisted of four artists and four photographers. Among the other exhibitors was Jessica Fitzpatrick.

She based her striking work on her passion for the seventies and eighties and the punk rock era. She is set to work for Channel 4 for a week later this year.

COMMITTED hair salon owner Seanette Porter has invested tens of thousands of pounds backing Bognor Regis.

Seanette has opened her own business in the town centre after more than 20 years of working for someone else. Her new venture, Blue Raspberry, opened on Monday after she completed the conversion of the former lookfantastic salon in the High Street at a total cost of £70,000.

She said: "I think people are beginning to think differently about independent businesses now. I didn't think I was getting any benefit of being part of a franchise any more.

"I felt that being in town like Bognor Regis, being an independent business was the best way to survive.

"All the big High Street brands are disappearing and struggling to survive.

Because of that, people are beginning to rethink the High Street. If we have more independents, that is what is going to bring people into the town.

"If people want to do a big shop, they will go to places like Southampton or Brighton. Smaller places, like Bognor Regis, need to offer something different."

Seannette has lived in the Bognor Regis area since the late 1970s and said she strongly believed in the future of

the town.

She became involved as the owner of a hair salon franchise when it was called Crowns as one of eight salons along the south coast. THe company expanded after about ten years to take over another group in Kent.

But a sell-out some 13 years ago saw the business become lookfantastic, owned by THe Hut Group.

THe firm is focused on the internet and used the salons as professionally staffed showrooms for its health, beauty, fitness and lifestyle products.

Seanette believed a fresh start was needed for her salon. Its new name and blue branding arose from a chat Seanette had with her staff about how a company's name could be different from its products.

"A lot of the names we wanted to use were already company names," she said. "But Blue Raspberry is unique and will be remembered because it is so different."

Her launch evening on Monday resulted in a series of compliments for the work she and her seven staff had carried out in the salon with the help of contractors - all of which are based in Bognor Regis.

"People have said the salon is bright, airy and fresh and that the outside has brightened up the town," she added.

` Stabbing appeal WITNESSES are being sought to a stabbing in Bognor Regis town centre.

Police officers were called to Canada Grove around 11pm last Wednesday, June 13, after reports of a verbal and physical row between a group of men.

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with minor stab wounds.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "An 18-year-old man from Bognor Regis was arrested on suspicion of grevious bodily harm with intent."

Fears raised over injuries after car windows damaged FEARS were raised a child could be shot by yobs after car windows were targeted in Felpham.

One of the area’s district councillors called for police to get to grips with the situation before a person was hurt.

Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham E) told the Joint Western Arun Area Committee last week windows on six vehicles had been damaged in one night this month.

However, although there were fears a gun could have been used, and it was said at the meeting the incident could be linked to a report of a cat being shot, further police enquiries led Sussex Police's officers to believe the cars' damage was, in fact, caused by a hole punch tool or something similar rather than a gun.

Police said they received reports on Sunday evening, June 3, that three parked cars in THe Grove, Felpham, had sustained deliberate window and bodywork damage.

A fourth had been damaged by another car colliding with it before being driven off.

THere were no reports of any injuries and firearms were not believed to have been involved.

“Damage to the three cars appears to have been caused by a hole punch tool or similar object,” said Sussex Police.

A spokesman said: "From our enquiries so far and from debris left

at the scene, we believe the suspect vehicle may have been a dark metallic green Toyota Corolla registered between 1997 and 2002."

At the committee meeting last Wednesday, an angry Cllr English, believing a gun to have been involved, said: “THis has been done as an adrenaline rush.

"Is the next adrenaline rush going to be going round shooting at people’s properties or are they going to go to a children’s playground and let loose for another adrenaline rush?

“At some point, the police have got to get a handle on this – or next time a child’s eye could be shot out.”

He expressed concern that there had “been no scenes of crime officer attending the scene and no officer has turned up to speak to any of the residents” on the evening of the incident.

“To simply issue a crime number and consider the matter closed is not acceptable to the majority of rightminded citizens," he said.

THe meeting’s chairman, Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham), added he was aware of a similar incident in Felpham Way a few weeks earlier.

Police want to interview man over alleged offences in town A SUSPECT is wanted for interview by police about alleged offences in Bognor Regis.

Simeon Harry, 30, is being sought by Sussex Police over an alleged assault and threats to kill a woman known to him.

Harry is described as black, 6ft tall, of muscular build, with a short Afro hair style. He has a scar around his mouth, tattoos on his left forearm and a tattoo with the word 'Sherry' or similar on his chest.

Birdman grounded for 2018 - but will fly again next year

LACK of funds has led to this year's International Bognor Birdman being cancelled.

THe organisers announced this week they would not be going ahead with the popular annual festival of would-be flyers.

It had been due to take place off Bognor Regis Pier on August 11 and 12. But it will be replaced by a fundraising event, called FunDay Sunday, on August 12, on the promenade and around the pier.

A statement from the organisers said: "We have some 'special' ideas that will be unique. Further details will be released in the next month."

THe organising committee's members - Sarah Boote-Cook, Jim Brooks, Jan Malpas and Steve Hearn - had received no further offers of finance after they appealed for help last month.

"So, International Bognor Birdman planning starts today for 2019 and what a unique show Bognor Regis will be putting on, for us, the UK and the world to see."

THis would start a pattern which the organising committee wants to see maintained into the next decade.

"Future International Bognor Birdman

events will be held every other year, i.e.

2019, 2021, 2023 - all years ending with an odd number and FunDay Sunday events will be held in the year in between, i.e.

2018, 2020, 2022 - all years ending with an even number," added the committee.

THis year is the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Birdmen in Bognor Regis.

THe event moved to the town in 1971 when it had outgrown its original base of Selsey.

Its idea of a human-powered flying competition for men and women who

were attempting to defy gravity proved popular over the years - though a lack of funding has previously caused it to be scrapped.

Competitors design and make craft to win prizes for the best costume or for the furthest distance flown. THey often take part to raise funds for various charities.

THere have traditionally been three categories - Leonardo da Vinci, Condor and Kingfisher. Between 5,000 and 25,000 spectators are believed to gather on the seafront to watch the antics.

“At least two gangs operating in council housing/social housing have been broken up, most recently in the past month.”

He called for Class A drug crimes to be included in the crime figures given to the committee.

“I know how serious Class A drug abuse is in Arun. I get a lot of feedback through Neighbourhood Watch about individual locations but we don’t get the figures for Class A drug use.

“THe abuse of Class A drugs is so serious we want to be really working to tackle it, particularly with the London drug gangs involved.

“THese figures would give us a clear picture of where these drug cases are happening,” he said.

Insp West said Sussex Police were also continuing their high visibility presence to counter anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

THe ongoing campaign had improved the situation after one youth was identified as being at the centre of the problems.

“We have been working closely with Arun District Council’s antisocial behaviour caseworkers and, as a result of that, there was one youth who really was a focal point for other young people and certainly seemed to be associated with most the problems we have had.

“THat particular lad is behaving much better through the use of bail conditions and a curfew," he added.

“We are seeing a really positive impact on the town centre as a result of that. It proves the point of looking at people who are causing problems and doing that preventative work."

Gary completes walk CANCER survivor Gary Broughton has finished his coastal fundraising walk to Bognor Regis.

Gary staggered across his finishing line outside the town's pier after he had completed some 35 miles from Brighton Pier.

He hopes to have raised some £500 for Cancer Research UK from his exertions - just two months after a tumour was removed from his left thigh.

He said: "I wanted to pick up the pace when I got to Felpham but my legs just went from under me.

"I got back up but they went again. I was determined to finish and I hobbled and hopped the rest of the way.

"I was determined to finish and the walk was a worthwhile thing to have done, 100 per cent. I'm not the sort of man who gives up on something like that. Cancer Research UK are an amazing charity and, as soon as I give the donations to them, they will put them to good use."

West Street resident Gary, 46, took about eightand-a-half hours to complete his trek after he set off from Brighton at 9am.

THis was slower than his eight-hour goal but the strong south-westerly wind of up to 20mph slowed him down.

He was also unable to follow his preferred route along the beaches because the tide was high for much of the time he was walking.

THis caused him to have to divert inland on a few occasions to follow footpaths and roads rather than walk straight along the foreshore.

As reported, Gary wanted to step out to help to beat cancer to help others who find themselves in his situation of being affected by the condition.

He was stunned earlier this year when he went to his GP because he was concerned about the condition of a spot on his left thigh.

Gary was referred to the dermatology department at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital. A biospy revealed he had a tumour and it was removed at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, on April 11.

Gary decided on his walk after he had completed a similar charity challenge with his former Butlin's colleagues about three years ago.

From Wayne Windows' state-of-theart headquarters in Charlwood Street, Bognor Regis, Darron explains his company's attitudes and aspirations.

Euro judges cause delay MAJOR proposals for housing in Pagham have been subject to a further delay.

A judgement by the European Court of Justice means a further study must be carried out for each of the schemes before councillors are able to make a decision about them.

THe judges' verdict, concerning a case in another EU country, means the applications for the 1,200-plus homes in Sefter Road, Hook Lane, Pagham Road and Horns Lane are unlikely to be decided before this autumn.

An Arun District Council spokesman said: "THe local planning authority are undertaking a screening assessment of each of the sites and will undertake any necessary, appropriate assessments.

"THe district council anticipates that this work will take approximately six weeks from the time the consultants are instructed."

Screening is a procedure carried out under the national planning rules to determine whether a proposed project is likely to have significant effects on the environment. It usually takes place at an early stage in the design of the project.

THe court's judgement applies to sites, like Pagham Harbour local nature reserve, which are known as special protection areas (SPA) because of their importance to wildlife. THe status, one of several given to the harbour because of its wetlands, has long meant extra studies need to be carried out for major schemes planned for nearby sites compared to the work needed to be completed by developers for other locations.

group Pagam said the need for further work allowed more time for protestors to register their opposition to the housing.

THe total number of letters received by Arun about the applications had reached 2,790 by last week.

"THe recent European court judgement has put all four planning developments on 'hold' until we are advised otherwise," the spokesman said.

"THe government Planning Inspectorate has issued a directive to all its planning inspectors advising them of their responsibilities and actions to be taken where a local authority has Ramsar (a worldwide environmental status) or SPA sites/reserves, like Pagham nature reserve.

It could potentially be late August/early September before we see movement."

THe Arun spokesman added: "Due to the proximity of the sites to Pagham Harbour, proposed development on the sites has always triggered the need for a habitats regulations assessment to be undertaken.

"In accordance with the advice from Natural England and our ecological advisors, Arun concluded that no further work was required on this subject, given the measures proposed (as part of the application) to mitigate against the impact of development upon Pagham Harbour."

But he added a recent European court judgement, dated April 12, concluded that it was not appropriate at the screening stage to 'take account of the measures intended to avoid or reduce the harmful effects of the plan or project on that site' in order to decide if an assessment of the implications for the site was needed.

Empty amusement arcade set to be used for shops and cafes SHOPS and cafes could open in a former amusement arcade in Bognor Regis.

THe empty building, highlighted in the Post last week for forming part of an eyesore area, is set to be brought back to life. Developer B5 Ltd has applied for planning permission to change the use of the premises in Waterloo Square for as many five units.

THe shops, cafes and pubs would be based around a central internal walkway from Waterloo Square to Norfolk Street. A statement by the planning agent, Philip Hamblin, says: “THe site provides an ideal opportunity

for overall refurbishment of the ground floor area now that the amusement arcade and cash casino has stopped trading. THe proposal is to sub-divide the area without significant structural changes to the building, but with changes to the building’s facades to provide a maximum of five units which could have a range of uses…

"THe site provides a great opportunity to provide improved vitality to the tourism of the area and to greatly enhance the appearance of (THe Steyne) conservation area.”

THe building dates from the early 1990s and has a 367sq m ground floor.

A WARNING has been given that more homes in North Bersted will lead to bigger queues at the area's waste tip.

Bersted parish councillor Chris Barratt said he feared queues stretching back on to the A29 on three midweek days at the site on the Arun Business Park this month would get worse if the planned 2,500 homes were agreed.

"If all these houses go ahead, the tip will not be able to cope, Planning needs to be looking at this now," he told June's Bersted Parish Council meeting.

"If they wait until these houses are agreed, it's going to be too late. It's the capacity of the site more than anything."

Going to the Chichester site on the A259 instead took him 90 minutes.

Cllr Hugh Carey said the problem with the waste site was the two-day closure brought in by West Sussex County Council which had pushed all the demand on to the other days. THe situation could deter firms from opening.

` New road names FORMER members of Bersted Parish Council are to remembered in a series of road names.

THe contribution to the area by two previous chairmen, and a longstanding member, will be recalled in a housing development at Brazwick Avenue and New Barn Lane. Potters Way will honour John Potter, who served on the council for 26 years, many of them as the chairman of its planning committee, until his death in January, 2017.

THe council's chairman from 1965-68, A.J. Bowles, has inspired Bowles Close and his successor, J.A. Whittaker, the chairman from 1968-73, will be remembered with Whittaker Grove.

Council's surgery is busiest to date DOZENS of people took the chance to speak to their Bognor Regis councillors this week.

Some 30-40 of them went along to the latest open air surgery to be held by the town council.

THe session on Tuesday morning in the London Road precinct was the busiest in the current series of the events.

Many of those who went along spoke positively about the recent changes in Bognor Regis.

Sheila Hodgson, the council's project officer, said: "We've had a lot more positivity this time than any other surgery, which is nice.

"A lot more people have turned up than before and there have been more councillors, up to six at one time, than the other surgeries."

Music festival returns again FORMER student Imy Luc is returning to Bognor Regis to headline a festival.

Luc will be performing one of two professional recitals at the Regis School of Music's latest summer festival.

She will be appearing at 3pm this Sunday at the school in Sudley Road with a programme of works by Brahms and Chopin.

Luc was born in Chichester and began to learn the piano aged six with Nina Levtov at the school. She is studying at the Royal Northern College of Music and

residents in its six wards to get to know their council members and raise any matters of concern with them.

Issues which were discussed at the latest surgery included seagulls, cycling along the precinct, overhanging bushes and trees and anti-social behaviour.

But Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, said plenty of positive comments had been made as well.

"People have been saying the town council is doing a good job. THey think it's nice that we are here to listen to them and hear their views," he said.

He added some of those who went along were in favour of the Hothamton linear park plans by Arun District Council.

People with ideas for the town, such as a suggestion for a gay pride event, were also welcome to attend future events. THe next surgery will be held from 1pm-3pm next Wednesday on the promenade.

Sasha Levtov, the school's founder, said: "THis is our 20th summer festival and this year we will be exploring romantic musician, particularly by Chopin and, also, Brahms.

"THe aim of the festival is to involve our students as well as give professional recitals. It also brings new people to the school to enjoy the inspiration and enthusiasm of our students.

"THe event provides them with a good opportunity to perform. It has become a highlight of our year."

THe festival was launched last Sunday and the first event is at 10.30am today, with an illustrated talk by Anthony Lindsey about Chopin.

Next Saturday will see prize-winning pianist Luke Jones perform the second professional recital at 7.30pm. He is also at the Royal Northern College of Music and will be playing works by Brahms, Schubert and Chopin.

THe weekend of June 30-July 1 for junior and senior amateur musicians in various age and ability classes as well as several non-competitive categories.

A performance by the school's young musicians illustrated by their drawings and paintings will take place at 7.30pm on July 4 after its successful first staging last year.

THe festival ends with a gala at 6pm on July 8. THis will consist of a concert, an exhibition of the drawings and paintings and prize-giving.

Large crowds turn out at the town's annual armed forces celebrations A FIRST re-dedication has been performed of the memorial to the wartime sailors on Bognor Regis Pier.

THe short ceremony at the granite plinth formed part of this year’s Armed Forces Day in the town last Saturday.

THe Rev Dr Alison Green, chaplain to the Sir Alec Rose Sea Cadets in Felpham, led the service in front of several dozen dignitaries and onlookers.

A wreath of poppies was laid by Commander Michael Dreelan, the Commanding Officer of HMS Excellent in Portsmouth, accompanied by Sea Cadet Kayleigh Fairbairn.

THe pier became the anti-aircraft firing range and gunnery training school HMS St Barbara from September, 1943, to January, 1945. A memorial was placed on the pier in 2010 but the present tribute to the sailors was unveiled on the promenade last September.

Cadet Fairbairn, 14, said: “It’s important we remember all those who have died for us so we can live the lives we live today.

“It’s the first time I have carried the wreath. It was quite nerve-wracking and I had to remember to keep time. But, apart from that, it was quite exciting and I enjoyed it.”

Cdr Dreelan has been a guest of honour at previous Armed Forces Days in Bognor Regis in recognition of HMS St Barbara’s role as a satellite unit of HMS Excellent.

He said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be here. For me, this is continuing the long-held tradition of the historic links between HMS Excellent and Bognor Regis.

It’s wonderful to do that and I can always

be assured of a warm welcome here.

“I think today has been superb.

Armed Forces Day is very important in recognising the contribution not only of our forebears in the armed forces but also those who continue to serve. It appeared to me to be a greater attendance here than last year and it’s always lovely to see the cadets out on parade.”

Former sailor Norman Lowry, 80, of West Street, Bognor Regis, was among those at the service. He left the Royal Navy as a Petty Officer Aircraft Mechanic in 1967 after 14 years. He said: “It’s important we remember all the men who served on the pier. It’s good to see this service carry on.”

Strong winds dominated the service and the rest of the day in the Waterloo Square area. Some of the planned gazebos had to be taken down because of the southwesterly gusts of up to 30mph.

Among the displays which survived was a wartime camp by the RAF Air Cadets 2351 Bognor Regis. It was complete with scaled-down kit plane replicas of a Spitfire and a Hurricane as well as three Jeeps, a check point and an unexploded bomb.

THe entertainment went ahead and featured THe Silhouette Show, the RAFA Skiffle Band, the RAFA Choir, the Air Cadet Band and singer Sarah Sullivan.

A small selection of military vehicles was also on display.

An important feature of last Saturday’s event was the drumhead service in front of the pier led by the Rev Brian Shersby, the Air Cadets’ chaplain.

He said: “We should pray for peace and remember with gratitude those who lost

their lives in the cause of freedom.”

THe standard for the 13 Air Cadets plus NCOs was carried for the service by Air Cadet Emily Sherrington, 13.

She said: “It was windy but I was glad I was the standard bearer. I had to grab it really hard with my hands.

“It was good to be the standard bearer.

You are representing your squadron and it’s a bit of responsibility.”

THe drumhead service was followed by the presentation of veterans’ badges.

Among the nine former servicemen and women honoured was 80-year-old Aldwick resident William Partridge.

He served in the RAF for two years as a senior aircraftman. He said: “I was delighted to receive the badge. I was not expecting to get anything like it. THis is quite an impressive event and it’s nice to see this number of cadets here.”

THe other veterans honoured were Brian Crane, Bob Clark, Roy Donaldson, Ronald Fraser, Leonard Hall, Stephen Hall, Douglas Holden and Malcom Spencer.

Organising committee member Sue Holmes said the day had gone well. “I am very pleased, though the wind has not been kind to us.

"But there are a lot of people here and they seem to be enjoying themselves and we also have more involvement from the cadets than before.

"We have an inter-services drill competition for the first time and a physical training display by them," she said.

` Local plan debate A KEY debate in the progress of plans for thousands of homes around Pagham and North Bersted is set to take place next month.

Arun district councillors are due to discuss the inspector's report into their local plan on July 18.

If they agree to his advice, as expected, this will trigger a six week consultation period for legal or procedural matters to be raised.

THe end of that period, and the discussion of any matters raised, will lead to the local plan being adopted by the council.

Its proposals for large housing developments include one in Chalcraft Lane and three around Pagham. If the report is not received by the July 18 meeting, the district council will hold an extraordinary session to discuss it.

THe details were given by Aldwick Parish Council's chairman, Cllr Lilian Richardson, after she was among the parish council members who attended a workshop about the local plan with Arun last Friday.

As reported, the parishes have been asked by Arun to make room for another 1,250 homes.

Cllr Richardson said: "Arun will be meeting with the councils in the two weeks after July 1."

But she said she told the Arun's planning officers she would be unable to decide further sites being allocated for housing without backing from the parish council.

"I can't just go to a meeting and approve what they give us," she said.

Arun has said the parishes can either put forward new areas for housing or it will make the decision.

Ethan is class act at school VOLUNTEER Ethan Stenning will be swapping one school for another in his school holidays.

Bognor Regis pupil Ethan is one of just 30 young people around Britain to have been chosen for this year’s WE charity volunteer trip.

THe WE movement is based around getting people together to change the world and make the world a better place.

Ethan will spend three weeks during August in India to experience the culture and sights and sounds of the continent.

A large part of his time will be spent helping to build a school in Rajasthan.

He will also take part in interactive workshops to explore global matters.

He said: “I’m pretty shocked I got picked. I’m most looking forward to finding out about the culture and meeting the people and experiencing their daily lives.

“It will be nice to explore that firsthand and helping to give the children an education is a good cause. THat’s the big reason I am doing this.

“We have got it so easy. We have got a modern school and they don’t have a school at all. It will be really nice to put in place something for them to have.”

Ethan, 14, is a rights respecting ambassador at THe Regis School, whose efforts have been acclaimed by Unicef UK. He took part in the school’s WE walk to water day between Worthing and Bognor Regis piers to raise more than £1,000 for

WE's work.

In India, he will join a family who have to make that trip to a water well every day to survive.

Ethan was inspired by the experience of another pupil at the school, Johan Keyser-Petch, who spoke in an assembly about his time in India two years ago.

Assistant principal Caroline Saunders said: “Ethan’s selection really encapsulates our belief that anybody can be the person who is chosen if they are brave and put themselves forward for these opportunities.

“If you do that, you have the chance to do something that will have a real impact.

THe message of the WE movement is very much about small changes can make a big difference.

“Ethan has done a lot of individual projects and, when they are all put together, you can see how impressive they look.”

RAF Air Cadet Ethan also hopes to make use of his flight to India, which Virgin Atlantic is providing for free, to further his aspirations to become a pilot.

Within WE, its villages project looks at helping to provide education, water, health, food and opportunity to millions of people around the world. It works with people in the countries concerned to ensure the schools are built in locations where they are most needed.

THis one of the ways the charity works with communities to lift themselves out of poverty using sustainable development.

Grants boost town groups CLASSICAL music lovers in Bognor Regis have been given a £5,000 boost.

County councillors have awarded the grant to enable the kitchen and toilets at the Regis School of Music to be replaced.

Delighted joint founder Sasha Levtov said: "I'm absolutely astounded by the award and very grateful. Because of all the wonderful support we have had, I'm confident the work will go ahead. It would be good to get it done this summer.

"I did a lot of work, including the plumbing, when we moved in 24 years ago. But the toilets are nearly 60 years old and they are from the beginning of the building."

THe money was given by county council members of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee from their community initiative funding. It will pay for a new kitchen and four renovated toilets.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Bognor Regis E) said he believed the school of music deserved the largest grant he had recommended to the committee.

"Although classical music is not part of my world, there are few organisations in Bognor Regis that have worked so hard and so succesfully to improve culture in the town and the surrounding area than the Regis School of Music.

"Giving this money will reach so many people in the greater Bognor Regis area and help them with new toilets and a kitchen which are absolutely vital for a community facility," he said.

THe Regis School of Music is fundraising on social media for £8,625 for the work.

More than £1,000 has been pledged by individuals so far to take the total amount raised to £6,000-plus.

THe building is used daily during term times and most weekends. Its reputation

attracts musicians from around the world.

Mr Levtov said: "Between 200 and 300 people use the school a week, with more when we hold concerts and during our annual festival."

A further £2,239 was awarded by the committee last Wednesday to the Bognor Institute of Laughter's first tour.

"THere will be a series of funny news reports like one in Hotham Park where alien birds are threatening all the squirrels," she said.

` Fly-tipping review LANDOWNERS in the south east have welcomed the government's decision to review its approach to tackling fly-tipping.

CLA South East, which also represents farmers and rural businesses in Sussex, has backed the call for evidence launched to find new ways to crackdown on organised crime in the waste sector.

Its regional director, Robin Edwards, said: Fly-tipping is not a victimless crime.

"It's easy to blame householders for the significant rise in fly-tipping, but we're seeing more and more waste on an industrial scale being dumped across the countryside.

"Part of the problem is council fees putting people off lawful disposal at the local tip but it is also businesses not complying with existing waste disposal regulations."

Figures compiled by the CLA South East showed 1,013 incidents of flytipping recorded in the Arun district and 988 incidents across Chichester.

THe CLA has a five-point checklist for tackling the problem - impose and enforce penalties which better reflect the seriousness of the crime; enforce fines for home and business owners whose waste is fly-tipped; appoint a national 'flytipping tsar'; develop new ways to clear up and support victims; and promote education and working in partnership.

Hal's memory to be honoured by clowns CLOWNS are expected to attend the funeral today of one of the founders of their convention in Bognor Regis.

THe funnymen and women will be dressed in character when they pay their respects to Hal Brooks.

Hal was a joint organiser with the late Trevor Pharo, or Bingo the Clown, of the first Clowns' Convention in 1985.

He toured all the local schools to get the youngsters involved - and hundreds took part in the procession.

Some went on to become entertainers and often thanked him for introducing them to the profession.

Hal, otherwise known as Kerby Drill the Clown, was familiar to classes of schoolchildren to whom he taught road safety in his unique style.

His funeral service will take place at 1.15pm at Chichester Crematorium. His family have asked those attending to dress in a light-lighted fashion to reflect Hal's lifetime in entertainment.

Tributes to Hal, 97, have been paid on social media. Town councillor Jeanette Warr said: "Always fun, gave his best to this town. RIP Hal." Zaz the Clown, who grew up in Bognor Regis, said: "RIP Dear Kerby Drill, aka Hal Brooks, a truly inspirational clown, artist, prop maker and gentleman - you will never be forgotten."

Hal passed away on June 4. He was bon on February 23, 1921, in North Kensington, London, and christened Harry Dennis Brooks. He was the

youngest of seven children - all are now deceased.

He was in a reserved occupation at the start of the Second World War as a maintenance carpenter with a London engineering company. But he chose to serve in the army where he trained as a signaller.

He was put in charge of a gun emplacement on Mumbles Lighthouse, near Swansea. While there, he met his future wife, Deena, at a dance.

His entertainment career started in Collins Music Halls where he appeared as a lightning sketch artist.

Hal came to Bognor Regis from Mumbles in 1960 with his late wife, Enid, and two sons, Jim and Michael, when he was head-hunted by Butlin's to be in charge of children's entertainment at its new holiday centre.

THey became known as Uncle Hal and Auntie Deena to avoid a name clash with Redcoats and other entertainers there and the names stuck throughout their time in the town.

Hal was famous for turning people's names into cartoon faces. Many people in Bognor Regis will have one of his 'Face Names' or laminated wooden pine sculptures.

As Kerby Drill the Clown, he did extensive tours of schools teaching road safety in the London boroughs.

He also toured extensively with the late Pierre the Clown, and a Model T Ford car act, and later with his son, Jim, as THe

Super Sausage Squad in galas and a TV appearance with Robert Brothers Circus.

THey also appeared several times on children's TV programmes such as Blue Peter and Crackerjack.

Closer to home, Hal frequently staged events to raise money to help the town.

In the early 1980s, he built the large yellow character of Billy the Bulb to raise funds for the seafront and Christmas lights and it became the mascot of the town's illuminations fund.

Hal was known for never turning down a request to help others, through entertaining, whether playing a piano or a talk about his painting.

His family would like to thank all those who shared their memories of him on Facebook and the kind card of sympathy they have received.

Hanging Gardens of Summer Planting a hanging basket may be the ideal way to expand your garden or make the best use of the outside space that you have. It’s also one of the easiest ways to connect your garden with your home.

If you plant your summer hanging basket at the end of May or beginning of July then it will thrive in a frost free environment producing a vibrant flourish of colour through to the autumn.

Choosing the right hanging basket really comes down to personal taste, but there are two basic styles to choose from – those with solid sides or the traditional wire types. The benefit of using wire hanging baskets is that they allow you to grow some plants through the sides rather than everything coming from the top of the basket. Whichever you

choose, go for the biggest that you can – the more room you have for plants the better.

First, you need to prepare the compost and liner. For soil you can go for the easy option and pick a ready-made hanging basket compost or you can use a multipurpose compost add a handful of perlite to improve drainage and aeration and add hydration crystals to help the soil retain water. Slow-release fertiliser granules can also be mixed in to feed the plants.

An open wire basket needs a liner to prevent compost falling through.

Traditionally, moss is used and gives a natural feel, but other linings are just as good such as coconut fibre. Using a bucket or empty pot to steady the basket

while you work, place moss around the bottom half, and then add newspaper as a barrier between the moss and compost.

This will stop the soil from falling out initially, and as the paper rots the roots will grow through to hold the earth in place. Fill this bottom half with soil.

Next, insert the trailing plants by making holes 50mm (2in) apart at this level and poke the roots of the plants such as lobelias or trailing ivy through the sides so they lie on top of the compost.

Add more compost and trailing plants, positioning them between those already planted below.

Now plant the top of the basket. A dramatic centrepiece is a must-have – something like an upright fuchsia or a geranium will give you a strong and vibrant focal point. Surround that with trailing plants like petunias or ivy-leafed geraniums, and one or two busy lizzies.

Remember to leave a 30mm (1.5in) gap from the soil to the top of the basket to help it hold water.

Finally hang the basket. Water thoroughly as hydration is key – hanging baskets will dry out very quickly without regular – sometimes daily - watering.

Fit the chain in place and suspend the basket on a secure, supporting bracket.

Take time to rotate the basket so that its best side faces outwards.

Dogs put best paws forward DOGS AND their owners from around Bognor Regis were joined by entries from as far afield as Bexhill and the New Forest at the town's annual dog show.

THe large number of hopefuls confirmed the event by Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club as being a popular and successful show.

Phil Lewis, the club's press officer, said: "With perfect dog show weather, the show attracted a very large crowd.

"THis year saw the introduction of 'have a go' flyball and agility, open to any dog over the age of 12 months. THese proved very popular, with a wide range of breed and age of dogs taking part.

"THe novelty classes are always popular, but with the show coinciding with Father's Day, it had even more entries than usual.

"Once again, fun is very high on the agenda, which makes for an enjoyable afternoon for both dogs and owners."

THe show, at the Jubilee Playing Fields off Chalcraft Lane, was opened by Darren Yeattes, of the Lowland Search Dogs Sussex, which will benefit from funds raised on the day.

THe pedigree class was judged by Sandie Tadd and a host of other classes also produced a series of winners. French lessons with a difference for students f Some of the players at the bridge fundraising event

Card game raises funds for charity A GROUP of volunteers from Chichester Area Talking News played their cards right to raise money for the charity.

THe helpers got together for a marathon bridge afternoon to help the charity raise funds to continue to serve its listeners. THe event took part on a recent afternoon in Boxgrove and led to more than £700 being raised.

An afternoon tea was served halfway through by Talking News volunteers Sheila and Alex Forsyth.

THe chairman, Dave McVittie, congratulated everyone on what he called the excellent result of the event.

Chichester Area Talking News records news from the area on to memory sticks for visually impaired people to listen to.

A spokesman said: "Volunteers record local news from regional papers and post them out to around 400 listeners in West Sussex.

"As part of the service, a player is provided, and it's all completely free.

"TV and radio keep people up to date with national events but many miss truly local news about happenings close to home."

FRENCH lessons came alive for Felpham Community College students.

THe college welcomed 27 pupils from St Maur des Fosses, one of the twin towns of Bognor Regis.

THe visiting students spent a day at the college as part of their European options course - extra English lessons and the chance to study some of their subjects in English.

Matthieu Cauchy-Duval, an associate assistant headteacher at the college, said: "It was great to see our students so keen to communicate with the French students.

THe Felpham students were genuinely fascinated by learning more about their French buddies.

"THis kind of initiative is particularly beneficial for our students' confidence in speaking the language.

"Our main objective as languages teachers is to instigate an interest in the culture of the country studied.

"THis has proved very successful as all students and staff were extremely positive about the day."

THe French visitors were paired with Felpham students who had chosen French

in their GCSE options.

As well as shadowing normal lessons, everyone took part in a variety of teambuilding actitivies, encouraging all students to use their language skills.

Oliver Page, a Year 10 student at Felpham, said the visitors were good fun and seemed to enjoy the day.

"I am taking French GCSE and it was a good opportunity to have a go with my speaking and vocabulary.We did a number of activities like charades and quizzes to get to know each other and the students also shadowed us for lessons," he said.

The role of Trustee is to primarily ensure the proper management of the charity and its activities, but extends to a variety of activities e.g. dealing with correspondence, acting as an ‘ambassador’ for the charity, promoting its activities and liaising with its beneficiaries (staff of St Richard’s Hospital and the Chichester Centre - mental health).

Play Area Volunteer – HM Prison Ford Volunteers are required to supervise and provide interesting/appropriate activities for visiting children within the play area of the social visits hall of the Prison. The

play area is set out in a welcoming and attractive way; volunteers greet and talk with the children and their parents. Activities include playing with toys and use of craft materials etc. Visits are on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 2 to 4pm plus half hour either side, total commitment 3 hours per session. Volunteers can commit to one or more sessions, ideally once a fortnight. Experience of working/being with children in a family environment (aged approx. 1 to 14) would be useful but training will be given. Volunteers must enjoy a challenge, be non-judgemental, friendly, approachable, enthusiastic, reliable and have a sense of humour.

2018 Country Fair Volunteer – Hotham Park Heritage Trust The Hotham Park Heritage Trust aims to promote, for the benefit of the community, the conservation, protection and improvement of Hotham Park and to raise funds to achieve this. Volunteers are needed to help on 4th and 5th August at the Country Fair. Duties will include bucket

collection and park marshalling. Applicants should be physically active, as this role involves standing and walking so plenty of stamina. Should have good front line customer service skills as the role involves engaging members of the Public. They would like people who can commit for 5 hours or longer per day.

Ambassadors – St Wilfrid’s Hospice Could you be an Ambassador for St Wilfrid’s? Could you promote understanding and support for St Wilfrid’s Hospice? The Hospice in Chichester has formed a new team of volunteer ‘Hospice Ambassadors’ who are spreading the word about St Wilfrid’s in the local area.

Ambassadors deliver short presentations of around 30 minutes to an hour, to local groups, societies and companies highlighting their work, the importance of planning end of life care and the involvement of the local community. If you are confident, dedicated, adaptable, and articulate, enjoy public speaking and would like to represent the Hospice in this way, they’d love to hear from you.

One big family at Chalcraft Hall…

CHALCRAFT HALL Care Home manager Sara Whitworth is someone whose job is very much a labour of love. THat much is evident when you hear her speak so passionately about the residents at the North Bersted home.

Sara oversees the day-to-day running of the care home which considers its patients as very much part of "one big family". THat family consists of 20 folks living with dementia as well as the 25 caring staff members who see to their every need Sara explains: "We have a busy diary with the emphasis very much on maintaining a home-from-home atmosphere. Twice a week we have musicians come in then we have singalongs with music right through from the 50s to the 80s, which is very popular.

“THe residents love singing along to the songs. THey know all the words. We’re certainly not a home where the residents sit around bored all day.”

"Relatives often join us for the activities, and these also includes quizzes, bingo and periods of time for reminiscences."

Sara's comments come after the home made substantial investment to improve the care on offer.

She adds: “It’s all about creating the best first impression we can. THe old drive was deteriorating and required upgrading, which we are always committed to doing here.

Replacing it has opened up the entrance to the home and made it safer and easier for visitors.

“We listened to feedback from our residents’ relatives about the need to improve the old entrance. It took three months from its planning to completion, but it was well worth the effort.”

But, as important as initial impressions are, Sara is equally aware standards inside the home must be maintained to a high standard as well.

"It was a massive relief for me to know that she was being cared for as an individual and being given time to adapt to her new surroundings."

of the tomato flesh. It is one of the only foods on Earth that does this. Lycopene is fat soluble, so it is easily assimilated when combined with fats. THink of nuts and a good quality olive oil.

Once lycopene is absorbed in the stomach it is carried to the liver (essential for proper hormonal balance), the adrenal glands (also has an important role in hormonal balance and stress response), and the testes which we all know is an important aspect of creating a baby. Men who consume a diet rich in lycopene have better quality sperm morphology.

Tomatoes are also high in other antioxidants which we know work together as free radical scavengers to help protect cellular health. Our entire bodies are made up of cells, so consuming foods rich in antioxidants is vital to sustaining health. In addition, antioxidants are especially critical to egg and sperm quality.

2. Carrots are high in beta-carotene, which is metabolized into vitamin A during digestion. THey are also high in fibre and other antioxidants. Only three per cent of beta-carotene in raw carrots is absorbed during digestion; puréeing, pulping, juicing and cooking can increase this by 39 per cent.

Vitamin A is also essential for the utilization of proteins, minerals and other vitamins, aiding the body in utilizing nutrients from other foods!

3. Celery is high in calcium. It is important to get an adequate intake of calcium rich foods while trying to conceive in order to build up your stores for pregnancy.

You will need to have enough calcium during pregnancy to keep your teeth healthy and to help the formation of your baby’s teeth and bones.

Calcium is also alkalizing for the body; a more alkaline body is favourable for producing healthy

cervical mucus necessary for nourishing the sperm on its way to the awaiting ova.

A more alkaline vaginal environment is also a way to help prevent yeast infection. For hundreds of years celery has been used as a blood-purifying tonic.

4. Onions are a rich source of vitamins A, B & C. Onions also contain folate, calcium, phosphorus, chromium, magnesium and iron. THis pungent vegetable is anti-inflammatory and very antiseptic, helping to fight bad bacteria in the gut.

In fact it is considered a prebiotic, feeding our good gut bacteria. Its anti-inflammatory properties may be a good choice for people who suffer from painful reproductive health issues such as endometriosis.

Regular consumption of onion may also be a good choice for women with PCOS. THe chromium in onion helps the body to respond properly to insulin levels, improving glucose tolerance. It is also said that onion is an aphrodisiac, aiding those with sexual debility.

5. Cucumbers are great for digestion because of their high water content. One cup of cucumber is high in vitamin A, folate, niacin, B6, vitamins E and K. THey also contain a wide variety of trace minerals.

6. Garlic has been found to support heart health.

Proper heart health is essential when facing stressful medical procedures such as IVF, HSG, or hormone testing.

THis bulb helps to regulate insulin levels, which is supportive for women with PCOS. IN THE past two weeks I have been privileged to attend two evenings hosted by the unerringly vivacious Cécile Bergart of Hampshire Wine School fame, pictured near left, with one concentrating on the upsurge in gin sales and the other relating to Champagne and English sparkling wine in particular with due attention to propitious food pairings.

Primo gin originates from the Middle Ages evolving from a herbal medicine for a number of disorders to a tipple spread partly through the British empire.

Empirically speaking, London gin is not the original as it was developed based on the older Dutch genever and became popular in the UK especially so in London) when William of Orange,

leader of the Dutch republic, occupied the English, Scottish and Irish thrones between 1689 and 1702 and the term gin is a shortened form of older English genever.

Gin aficionado Cécile regaled the audience with her insight and first offered up a textbook London Dry Gin to contrast with the new varieties of gin now hitting the high street.

THe new varieties are either floral , spicy or fruity while London gin is a mélange of all these tastes and the City of London Dry Gin No 1 is on offer for just £16 as the 25 per cent off offer on six bottles is available until June 23, so one day left for these offers!

Furthermore, Cécile proceeded to tell us that there are now 32 brands of tonic water and that there is a distillery opening up every week! Fever Tree, unlike the previously ubiquitous Schweppes, is entirely made up of natural products and is very citrussy with nice bubbles.

Tonic waters these days can either be sweet, aromatic or neutral and should be chosen to complement the sort of gin you prefer.

We moved on to a THames Distillery London Distilled Dry Gin No 1 from

an exclusive recipe blended by Charles Marwell and retailing currently at £20 80 with the exotic intensity of the ancient spice route and, paired with orange and cloves, this gin tasted divine!

THe final gin we sampled was a Warner Edwards Victoria's Rhubarb Gin being a variant of pink gin which proved to be deliciously light and refreshing and went so well with an aromatic elderflower tonic, although the £36 price tag is a tad lofty!

Cécile finished by adding a few very handy tips including keeping your gin bottle in the freezer for extra coldness, the crucial importance of ice, tonic needing to be just double in amount compared to gin and using a tall glass with a heavy bottom for maximum enjoyment - varieties of gin abound and happy research!

At the second evening, Cécile began by explaining the difference between Champagne and English sparkling wine.

She introduced us to a Delacourt Brut Champagne on offer, as one of six, at just £22.50 and advanced the notion that Champagne is about yeast producing brioche and biscuit flavours with buttery toast - tiny bubbles to boot and this

Champagne has been on the lees for three years, something that the English cannot reproduce yet. It sufficeth to say that this fine example has been selected as the house Champagne for British Airways!

Climate change, however, is coming to our rescue and the advance of English sparkling wine is the beginning of an amazing success story comparable to the ascent of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Hambledon and Meon Hill, near Petersfield and bought by a French chap, are leading examples and the

English Sparkling Rosé from Tenterden and Chapel Down Winery, on offer at £18, if indeed one of six, proved to be a lively, toasty well-crafted rosé lacking the brioche taste due to less time ageing on the lees, but nonetheless a great pair to smoked salmon and a jolly good summer sup!

As we progressed to white wines, the Margaret River 2017 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc priced on offer at just £8.25 was fresh on the palate and a great summer quaff and resembled a Bordeaux blend of white wine to delight the palate.

Community News & Views MOBILE library users around Bognor Regis and Chichester can pick up advice for spotting scams as well as their favourite books.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice has joined with West Sussex County Council's mobile library service to use its vehicle to stock warning leaflets about being conned.

THis is the first year the two organisations have teamed up to mark the national scams awareness month.

Luca Badioli, the chief executive of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with West Sussex Library Service and their community mobile library which is run by Bognor Regis Library. THis will help us get our scam awareness message out to many more people."

Last year saw Citizens Advice place a limited selection of leaflets on the mobile library. Pictured below are its driver, Rob Hewson, left, and Ken Porter, of Citizens Advice.

THe vehicle based at Bognor Regis Library serves an area which stretches from Findon to Northchapel and across to the Hampshire borders. It stops at more than 60 different locations in its two-weekly timetable.

It is expected the leaflets will be seen by 800 people in many rural locations who would otherwise have been unaware of the Don't miss a trick - Be scam aware campaign.

It calls for mobile library users - and everyone else - to be on the lookout for any website, letter, doorstep seller or phonecall with a proposal that seems too good to be true.

Mr Badioli said: "While there might be new scams cropping up all the time, the tactics of scammers remain the same.

Pam O'Brien, the library's manager, said: "We are delighted to take part in scams awareness month, enabling us to alert our library customers to the dangers of scams.

"Customers using the library will be offered information reminding them of the need to be vigilant throughout the year."

Dear Sir, I’m writing in with regards to the UK Government’s proposal to amend the Gender Recognition Act of 2010, to allow self identification for transgendered individuals, as I’m concerned people may not be aware of the potential impact this could have on women and girls' spaces in our local community.

Not everyone will know that soon our government will be consulting with the general public before they will make a decision on whether to allow transgender people to 'self identify'.

THe aim of self identification is to allow transgendered individuals to bypass the medical diagnosis model. However, this poses a risk to women and girl’s rights to privacy, dignity, and safety.

Passing Self ID will mean a biological male can legally access any space that currently excludes men, including women’s refuges, women and girls' changing rooms, as well as womenonly swim sessions and gym classes.

THis is problematic, as there is serious potential for abuse.

At the moment, if you are transgender, you must acquire a medical diagnosis and a gender recognition certificate before you can access these spaces.

THis cuts down on any potential abuses from those with nefarious intent, such as serious sexual offenders.

I would ask everyone who is concerned about this issue to write in to their local MP to express their concern, and also to take part in the upcoming government consultation to make their views on the issue clear.

A SUCCESSFUL and colourful summer show has been celebrated by Donnington Gardening Club.

THe effects of the long and harsh winter with low light levels, followed by a cold and difficult spring, were forgotten as Donnington Parish Hall was transformed into a mass of blooms and greenery.

A large number of entries displayed the skills of the club's members and the roses and sweet peas were excellent with their bright colours and exquisite scent.

HUNDREDS of people are expected to descend on an open space in Chichester tomorrow for a free screening of a Hollywood hit.

THe large audience will gather on the Whyke Oval in Hay Road from 6pm for the 7pm start of THe Greatest Showman.

Before the film, a live band will provide entertainment while the open air film-goers can enjoy their picnics.

Face painting, snacks and refreshments will also be on offer for free at the latest community occasion to be staged by the Grace Church.

THe church has about 400 members in Chichester, Bognor Regis, Midhurst and Havant. THeir community action group has been meeting fortnightly for the past few months to plan the screening.

Chris Kimbangi, one of Grace Church's elders and the lead organiser for the event, said: "As Chichester continues to grow, Grace Church wants to create opportunities that bring residents together to show what a diverse, vibrant and fun community we are.

"Many people also believe that church is irrelevant, boring and full of old people.

"THese events demonstrate a way for people to see the church in action showing its vital place in the community, having fun and for all ages."

THe church began with a small group of people in Chichester in 2006. Its members attribute much of the success of its growth to the public outreach events it has staged in recent years.

THe most recent was a community fun day in Hampshire Avenue, Bognor Regis, last month, pictured below.

Some 2,500 people went along to enjoy a mass of activities such as martial arts display, children's entertainer, bouncy castles and wild animal display.

THat followed a similar day at the Whyke Oval in May, 2017, when more than 1,000 free burgers were given out, along with endless cups of teas and coffees to the 900 people who went along. THe previous September saw a community barbecue in Midhurst attract 300 people to enjoy its games and activities.

THe events have the objective of building social cohesion within local groups of people by bringing together people who might not usually socialise with its other.

THe church's regular Sunday morning meetings have a contemporary feel with modern music.

QUESTIONS about policing priorities and performance can be put to Sussex's police and crime commissioner at a meeting this month.

Members of the public can question Katy Bourne on the way crime is being tackled in Sussex and how the force is performing against her police and crime plan. Answers will be given during the next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel at 10.30am next Friday at County Hall in Lewes.

Cllr Bill Bentley, chairman of the panel, said: "As a critical friend to the commissioner, the role of the panel is to properly scrutinise all elements of her work, on behalf of the public, to ensure the role is being carried out effectively.

"We want to make sure the issues we are raising are those that the public feel are important to them. I would encourage people to submit their questions and help achieve this."

Questions to the police and crime commissioner can be about any policy issue relating to policing in Sussex but should not be related to operational matters of live cases.

It is recommended that questions be submitted in advance of the meeting to allow full responses to be prepared and to give more people the chance to take part.

A total of 45 minutes will be allocated to members of the public who would like to ask their questions in person. THe two main items on the agenda are the commissioner's annual report and an update on diversity in police recruitment.

Town's early schools provide history lesson A music school and a riding school were among the first in Bognor AS WE head to the summer months with everyone thinking of holidays and, for some next term, I thought it would be an idea to take a brief initial look at the education provision and just some of the earlier schools throughout the district.

THe earliest record of a school in the town was in 1825 when there were just 25 ‘poor’ girls attending THe Laurels, which was a privately owned school situated in Church Path at the rear of Hotham Park. THeir education was, however, total instruction into housewifery duties to prepare them for the future.

In 1879, a school had been built at North Bersted, one that seems to have been sadly neglected historically.

Education and its provision has changed greatly since the 1830s, especially when you consider that during a period from the mid1800s until the mid-1960s there are records available for over 75 schools in the Bognor Regis district.

Many of these schools, however, were privately owned and in some cases only catered for a handful of pupils, being known as ‘Dame schools'.

THe Bognor Official Guide of 1911 included a section on 'Bognor as an Educational Centre', which stated: “Bognor, with its fine climate, clear air and unequalled sea bathing facilities,

should become a recognised education centre". THis did not occur, although schools remained an important element of the district.

Although many premises have long since ceased to be used for education or have been demolished, some premises are still clearly visible today. One such is Northcliffe House, which from 1917 was a preparatory school for boys up to the age of 14 and was situated on the Upper Bognor Road, which were eventually transformed into dwellings.

THe details for this school provide an insight into the way of life for these boys who were being trained for 'Public schools and the Royal Navy, with the school being divided into four squads, to 'provide healthy rivalry'.

Alongside the academic side of the school provision, also shooting, swimming, boxing and sports were available as well as singing being encouraged! It was here that a young man called David Sheppard learned activities very successfully as he went on to become a famous English cricketer and then Anglican Bishop of Liverpool. THe school eventually closed in 1962.

in Albany House, London Road, a site where today we have the Crown Bingo.

THe Milton Riding School was situated in West Street and is now a private residence and Colebrook House School was situated on THe Esplanade but has long since been demolished.

Another school which was advertised was the Manor House School in Chichester Road, and its claims were it was also able to ‘prepare boys for the public schools and the Royal Navy'.

St Michael's School, which was opened in the 1920s, was a Woodard School for Girls.

It is quite enlightening to read some of their provisions, which included information on the existence of a separate sanatorium for any cases of infectious illness. Dormitories and bedrooms were available, with smaller rooms for sisters!

THis building was updated and, while it is still within an educational world, it is a far cry from that enjoyed or endured by the girls in the 1920s that attended this 90-place boarding school.

Climate and location of the town continued to be beneficial to the setting up of many schools and, additionally, the visit of King George V to recuperate in 1929, helped to continue the success of many of the private schools well into the 1930s.

Situated in Campbell Road was the Villa Maria Servite convent, which opened in September, 1923, in premises previously occupied by the Sisters of the Faithful Companions. THe school opened with 40 pupils but by 1937 had expanded with a gymnasium and then further premises were

acquired in Albert Road. THis school closed in 1984, only 12 months after it celebrated its diamond jubilee.

School children came from very diverse backgrounds, with many rich children staying at the wide range of boarding schools, while their parents travelled the world. Apparently, at Eversley School, which was situated on THe Esplanade, it was advised that children could be boarded during the Christmas holidays while their parents continued with their travels.

Another perspective on education was reported in a small article in the Observer, in October, 1946, headed ‘Bognor Regis Training College.’ THe report commences with, 'an event of no little local interest is the official opening by Sir John Maud, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Education, of the Bognor Regis Training College'. It was planned to provide an emergency training course of one-year duration for men and women from 'the Forces and national service that wished to enter the teaching profession'.

THe college was opened in premises used during the war by the military but which had previously been known as St Michael’s School for Girls.

THe more you look into the history of schools in the district over the past 193 years it is like looking at the rise and fall of educational premises. Schools have also provided a service that has not only catered for academic success, but to the development of individual pupils. Schools have ranged from specialists in specific activities, to the college style of today and the number of years we spend being educated has changed many times.

Chichester runners seek Salisbury PostSport in-spire-ation against region's best CHICHESTER’S rising stars of track and field are limbering up for one of their biggest meets of the season.

THe club’s starlets will be testing themselves against some of the region’s best at the Southern Athletics League this Saturday in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Chichester Runners will be sending entrants to compete at under-17, under-20 and senior levels on what is shaping up to be perfect conditions of ambient temperatures and minimal breezes.

Among those looking to build on a good showing from earlier in the season will be sprint prospect Jacob Piper, who has already dipped below 12 seconds at a Southern Athletics League meet earlier this season.

Meanwhile, Jess Rayner will be looking to build on her own personal milestone from earlier this summer when she broke through the 10 metre barrier for the first time in the shot, putting her within touching distance of

the UK top 50 for her age group.

Hosts Salisbury currently top the table after two events, just marginally from Brighton and Hove Athletics Club, while Chichester sit 11th in the 16-team Division 3 South West having finished in ninth last summer. * Hundreds of competitors cruised round Goodwood Motor Circuit on Wednesday evening for the annual Midsummer 5.

Organised by Chichester Runners, about 300 adults and juniors took part in the event, which starts and ends at Lavant Memorial Hall in Sheepwash Lane.

From its earliest beginnings, the event which is now in its 31st year - has established itself in the summer road racing calendar, attracting athletes from across the region.

Up to 100 youngsters took part in the one mile fun run with a further 200 on the full five mile route around the famous course.

Felpham YC to train future sailing stars

FELPHAM Sailing Club has become one of only 15 in the country to be chosen for a national scheme to train sailors.

THe clubs have been given the status of the first British Youth Sailing (BYS) Recognised Clubs to celebrate excellence in developing sailing stars of the future.

THe Recognised Clubs initiative sees the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) working alongside sailing clubs around the country to promote grassroots sailing and support junior and youth sailors as they develop racing skills.

Chris Atherton, the association's senior high performance manager, said: “THe key challenge for our sport is to encourage more young people to start participating in sailing and progress into racing.

“THis is best done at club level and a successful junior and youth training and racing programme will enable a club to flourish.

“THe BYS Recognised Club status distinguishes those sailing clubs with a

commitment to the development of junior and youth racing and race training, which is delivered in a safe and fun environment."

In order for a club to achieve the status, it must meet a series of exacting standards.

THey must run a regular race training programme in at least one of the BYS recognised classes – the Optimist, Topper, Laser 4.7, Cadet, RS Tera (Sport), RS Feva XL and BIC Techno windsurfer at junior level, and 29er, 420, Laser Radial, Laser Standard, Nacra 15 multihull and RS:X windsurfer at youth level.

Club sailors must compete at BYS Regional Junior Championships at least once every two years.

Training must be delivered by qualified RYA coaches to RYA Recognised Training Centre standards or equivalent, with a safeguarding and child protection policy in place.

THe new scheme replaces the long-running Champion Clubs programme which ended earlier this year.

DARTS: High quality scoring and some nail-biting races to the double were the order of the day during Bognor Friday Night Summer Darts League Mixed Pairs Knockout.

A record 34 pairs took to the oche at the Newtown Social Club to set a new summer league record before they were whittled down to one deserving champion.

Such was the high turnout, two preliminary matches were required before the first round proper where the drama really started to unfold.

Last year’s champions Mary-Jane Todd & Mark H Todd (BRSA Ravens) were surprisingly knocked out by Rhonda West (Richmond Rebels) and Alex Richardson (Aldingbourne Mavericks) before two-time Benevolent Winter League champions, Janet Grinstead and Gary Blackwood (THe Legends), knocked out the surprise victors in the very next round and then made their steady way into the semi-finals where they met Mary Todd and Stuart Gray of BRSA Ravens.

Gary Blackwood hit a heavy scoring groove in the deciding leg with 100, 140 and 99 before showing he had his doubles in good working order too to book their place in the final.

THey faced Hayley Gatford and Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares) who survived a scare in the deciding leg against Debbie and Ashley Clements with Debbie hitting what looked like being a decisive 134 only to miss double 18 for a 92 outshot leaving Phillips to clinch the final berth with a trusty old double top.

Blackwood continued his heavy scoring into the final, setting a marker with an opening 140 before grabbing the momentum of the final with an impressive 112 finish.

Phillips and Gatford battled back in the second leg but it looked like they might be rueing their missed opportunities with just 90 and then 20 left.

But the pressure was mounting for both pairs and, after a series of missed doubles, Phillips finally levelled up the tie with single one and double two.

THe deciding leg saw some fittingly high-quality darts with Blackwood and Phillips both peppering the treble 20 bed.

Both pairs had chances to win it, Gatford missing double 16 for a 90 out and Blackwood landing in outer bull when bull would have taken the title before Phillips held his nerve to hit double 12 with his third dart.

FOOTBALL: Pre-season friendlies have been announced by Selsey and Chichester City for their build-up to their forthcoming SCFL campaigns.

Division One club Selsey will be at home for all their games. THey begin against Horndean, of the Wessex League, at 7.45pm on July 10, followed by Worthing at 3pm on July 14.

Portchester will make the trip to the High Street ground at 7.45pm on July 17 and Walton & Hersham will be next on July 21. THe final two matches are against Pagham at 7.45pm on July 24 and Bosham will complete the fixtures at 3pm on July 28.

Chichester City, of the Premier Division, have arranged eight fixtures. THey will begin by travelling to the Hamble Club in Hampshire for a midday kick-off on July 7.

THey will be on the road again to Wick at 3pm on July 14, with their first home game against Worthing at 7.45pm on July 17.

THree more away games follow - to Moneyfields (3pm, July 21), THree Bridges (7.45pm, July 24) and Sidlesham (7.45pm, July 26). THeir final friendlies will be at home to Christchruch at 3pm on July 28 and against Woking U23s at 7.45pm on July 31.

Green Army seek recruits THE CHANCE to become the latest talent to roll off the Green Army production line is being extended to ten-yearold girls.

Chichester City Ladies have expanded youth trials for the 2018/19 season to all age groups currently at the club with a trial day for all teams ahead of the new season scheduled for 10am on Saturday, July 7, at Chichester College.

THe club is rolling out the welcome mat to players interested in joining the club’s under-11, under-12, under-14 or under-16 set-ups.

THe club are looking to build upon the excellent success they have already had in bringing on home-grown talent into the first-team and even beyond.

In 2017, Loulou Robson signed on for Chichester City at the age of 16 and made her debut in the title-winning season while last season saw another four players knocking on the door of the first team having graduated through the Chichester College Academy or the Chichester City Youth.

Poppy Shine, Alice Walford, Gracie White and Alex Collighan have all featured

under Matt Wright this year with the latter becoming a regular within the squad and received a call-up to the Northern Ireland u19 training camp.

THe club are continuing to make preparations for life in National League South, having announced their programme of pre-season friendlies in July and August.

THe warm-up games will see Chichester take on the Winchester City Flyers on Sunday, July 15, and Poole Town a week later before testing themselves against two clubs who will be playing in leagues above them next year; away to local rivals Lewes on Sunday, August 5, and home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, August 12.

Meanwhile, Chichester City FC have put the callout for volunteers willing to step forward to help the club with another season in the Southern Combination Premier.

A similar demolition job against Horsham this weekend could see them leapfrog their opponents up the table in the Sussex Premier Division.

Bognor have to begin again

BOGNOR are looking to get back to winning ways after their bright start to the season has stalled without a win in three games.

THey will look to get back to winning ways when another out-of-form side Lindfield come calling at their Regis Oval this weekend.

Bognor dug out a draw against St James' Montefiore last time out, allowing their opponents to chisel away at the six-point lead Bognor had over them at the bottom of the Division Two table.

Prideaux de Lacy ultimately swung the match, lifting his side from a poor start of 79-5 to a competitive 169.

Opening bowling pair Marquino Mindley and Josh Segeant got through the lion share of the overs for Bognor and claimed seven wickets between them.

Bognor's reply was built around wicketkeeper Ryan Maskill's impressive 67 off 93 balls but he lacked support as his side struggled to 116-7.

A 73-run seventh-wicket stand between Magnus Kristensen and Simon Hasted had lifted the away side to a competitive total of 221-8 after they were struggling at 118-6 at one stage.

THree Bridges started aggressively in pursuit, blasting Chichester Priory Park opening bowler Peter Lamb out of the attack after just three overs, and found valuable contributions from their lowermiddle order to see them over the finish line despite Joe De La Fuente’s heroics in claiming 5-53.

Kristensen mopped up the other two THree Bridges wickets to cap an impressive all-round display.

But he couldn’t stop his side slipping to a three-wicket defeat.

Pagham will be riding the crest of the wave in Division THree when they take on Steyning this weekend having put in their best performance of the season last time out to trounce THree Bridges 2nd XI by 191 runs.

Ryan Barratt blasted an unbeaten 108 and was backed up by some late hitting from Rico Webb (50 of just 30 balls) to set THree Bridges 269 to win.

THeir chase never got going as they were reduced to 36-5 and they succumbed in just 24 overs to 77 all out with Justin Scott the pick of the Pagham bowlers.

Bognor edge close match with Ladies BOGNOR LADIES kept their cool to take the spoils in a keenly-fought league contest with Norfolk Ladies in Division One. THe match was hanging in the balance until the late stages but Waterloo Square-based Bognor held their nerve to eventually come away with all six points. Muitt to stick with Rocks after relegation in boost for club BOGNOR have retained a key attacking threat for their bid to return to the National League South with the promise of more to come.

Jimmy Muitt has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him as a Rocks player for their return to Bostik Premier League.

Muitt was among a number of key players the Rocks were keen to retain despite relegation, though the news with fellow striker Ollie Pearce looks less promising.

A potential five-figure compensation package, set to be decided by tribunal, for Pearce is likely to coat the pill somewhat of the likely scenario that the goal-getter will find employment somewhere else in Sussex, with Worthing being strongly linked with him.

Manager Jack Pearce has also whet Rocks’ fans appetite with the prospect of who might fill his namesake’s shoes should he leave.

A proven striker with bags of National League experience and a promising young forward who bagged more than 30 goals for his club last season have been among those given their chance to stake their claim to be the next Nyewood Lane goal hero.

Whoever does take Pearce’s shirt for that

first Bostik fixture, will have a capable foil in tow in the shape of influential attacker Muitt who agreed to extend his stay at the club this week after discussions with manager Jack Pearce.

Pearce said: "Jimmy has bags of ability and we both know there is much more to come from him. He is still developing and will only get better.

"It's always good to have the players who you want to keep agree to do so.

"Signing Jimmy shows we have taken yet another step in shaping the squad for the new season. THere are more signings afoot, both new players and those who will be retained.

"After the disappointment of relegation, to have a player of Jimmy's calibre re-commit to the cause is very encouraging. We're hopeful of an exciting season ahead.”

With Muitt’s signing, fans are now hopeful the club is moving in the right direction and that sense will be bolstered with the news of the Rocks’ new shirt sponsor, Woods Travel.

Rocks will have Woods (woodstravel.co.uk) on their home shirts, while Sussex Cruise Club (sussex-cruiseclub.co.uk) will be on their away tops.

Pearce to wear one more hat HE'S PREVIOUSLY admitted to 'wearing too many hats' in balancing a myriad of responsibilities with the Rocks alongside a senior role with the FA. But Bognor manager Jack Pearce has plumped to add another chapeau to the collection by taking on a senior role within the Vanarama League.

Pearce stepped in to the breach to replace Charlie Clapham on the league board who stepped down at the close of the season from the post of vice-chairman after resigning from Southport amid a takeover bid.

Pearce has previously been labelled 'the most influential man in Sussex football' for his prestigious position with the FA which has seen him play a key advisory role on who the country would back as the new FIFA president and whether to introduce the winter break.

Long-serving club secretary Simon Cook is also set for more meetings after taking on further responsibilities with his election to the board of the Bostik League.

Cook had served as a board member for seven years until the club left the league last summer but says he is delighted to be able to again take a part in shaping the league’s policy and organisation.

ON THE pitch he was a bullish sharpshooter who would run through brick walls if it meant he would have a sniff at goal.

But in his second career, Bognor's new first team coach appears to be calm, measured, confident, but overwhelmingly excited about the challenge ahead.

Robbie Blake arrives as Nyewood Lane after three years at Portsmouth. When he was announced as the successor to Darin Killpartrick, many eyebrows were raised.

Not many people are prepared to drop four leagues down the football pyramid to progress their career.

But Blake is certain he has made the right move and just cannot wait to get started when the players return from their summer break in just a few weeks.

In what is the second part of an extensive interview with the Post, the former Bolton, Bradford and Leeds United striker explains how he's keen to use his Portsmouth contacts to help Bognor push on up the Isthmian Premier in the coming season.

Robbie - many people were surprised at your appointment. What are the comparisons with Bognor to the previous roles and clubs you've been at?

Obviously I've seen the training facilities this week and Jack and the rest of the team have done a really good job in getting that sorted and to a good standard. In terms of my approach to the players I don't think it will be that much different to what I've been used to.

THe coaching methods I used at Portsmouth and Chesterfield before will be the same that I use at Bognor.

I'm just hoping the lads really enjoy it and we can all progress as a team.

What specific areas will you be looking at?

To be honest, I think we will look to work at everything.

I like to have a tempo to the training which gets the lads working hard, moving the ball about, moving the ball quickly with the aim of playing good attacking entertaining football.

I have my methods and I'll be looking to really drum them into the players Will that extend to you using your striking knowledge to help the team score goals?

Of course! I've spoken to Jack about the situation and I'm pretty sure will get one or two in up front. THat's an area we need to strengthen in and I'm sure we will be doing that in coming weeks. Hopefully, they will be a good fit to the way the team plays.

How much will you be bringing from Portsmouth?

Will Bognor be signing any Pompey players soon?

100 per cent I plan to use my contacts at Portsmouth.

It's still pretty early in terms of pre-season not even starting but, hopefully, there are one or two things that can happen.

I'm pretty sure if go down that route something like that may be able to happen.

Have you any targets for the next season?

It's tough at the minute as I've not been around the players just yet. But Bognor has a really good set-up and they have been high in the leagues in recent years.

I'm pretty sure with one or two new additions which Jack and I have spoken about we can have a successful season and be in the top three or four.

No one wants to settle for midtable or the bottom half so, hopefully, we can do better than that.

We need to be positive about what’s coming up ahead.

Daren and his team have made a big effort to embrace the tournament being held in Russia this summer with special attention be paid to the fortunes of England. But, being a hair salon, the tournament has a new identity: Brushia 2018!

THe THree Lions picked up a nervy 2-1 triumph over Tunisia in their opening Group G match and now head for Sunday’s game against Panama hopeful of securing another win.

Daren, who has hit the headlines in the past with clever “hair art” depicting famous players shaved into fans’ heads, explains: “THe World Cup is a great way to have some fun and we’re certainly doing that.

“We have our very own trophy in the salon and we’ve even come up with our own England shirt; instead of three lions we’ve gone for three irons on a shirt!

“I was lucky enough to travel along the Panama Canal recently as part of my 50th birthday celebrations so the game against them on Sunday is extra intriguing for me.

“Our clients are loving all of the World

Cup stuff we’re doing and so are the staff.

Now all we need is for England to go on and win it. Fingers crossed!”

Meanwhile, Kate, Daren’s wife, says the salon are always looking for hair models for education in salon. She said: “If you think you’d like to model please get in touch. And we are always looking to recruit great staff, too!”

LOTUS Styling are fundraising to help Prostate Cancer UK lead the fight against prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer has overtaken breast cancer to become the third biggest killer in the UK. Salon owner Daren Terry said: “Over the past 20 years, the number of men dying from prostate cancer has been steadily increasing as the advances in better treatments haven’t kept pace with the growing older population.

Early diagnosis is the key to saving lives. Having lost my father in March this year it is very close to my heart.”

THe salon, who are internationally known for their window displays have

used the humorous slogan, “Gents how’s your water pressure this spring”, in their window to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer UK. THis window display was kindly donated by local company, Adapt Display.

THroughout the month of May the salon has run a series of fundraising events in the salon to raise awareness and support for the charity, they have exceeded the £1,000 target.

Salon owner Kate Terry said: “Last week was International Men’s Health Week and we held a fundraising day on Friday 16th June with lots of fun activities in the salon to help us reach our target of £1,000. We managed

to raise an amazing £1,050 with the support from our clients, staff and friends.”

One in eight men in the UK will get Prostate Cancer. Age, ethnicity and family history are also factors.
