Mark Dakeyne announced his verdict on Arun District Council's local plan this week - and he has backed the controversial proposals for the largescale housing estates in the areas.

His decision, which was made public yesterday, is a significant step to ensuring the schemes of 1,200 homes in Pagham

and 2,500 in North Bersted are built. They also include up to 3,000 homes around Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate.

Arun district councillors will debate his report at their full meeting on July 18. The council's Conservative majority will be expected to endorse Mr Dakeyne's findings and trigger a sixweek consultation period for legal or procedural matters to be raised.

School is set to expand upwards AN EXPANDING Bognor Regis school is set to have an extra floor added.

The additional space at popular St Mary's Catholic Primary School will enable more than 100 extra children a year to be taught there.

West Sussex County Council has revealed plans for the extension which will be the first time since it opened on its current site in 1927 that a second floor will be in use.

It is hoped building work for the scheme will be completed in time for the first influx of children to be taught at the school from September, 2019.

A statement from the council's planning application says: "Officers have been closely monitoring the number of children to ensure schools can meet the demand for places.

"The county council has received evidence of further growth in the number of children both at primary and secondary level.

"This is due in part to an increase in the birth rate and also in response to migration and housing building.

"The county council, together with St Mary's Catholic Primary School, have put forward proposals to cater for the extra numbers to increase from 1.5 forms of entry (45 places) to two forms of entry (60 places) per year."

The school serves the Bognor Regis area as well as the wider Catholic community from Pagham to Middleton and up to Barnham and Slindon.

It was started in 1899 and moved to

Glamis Street in 1927 and was founded by the Servite Fathers. New buildings were added gradually. The latest time was in 2013 when four classrooms were added.

It has room for 315 pupils aged four11 and it will grow to 420 pupils if the extension is build.

The additional facilities will comprise three classrooms, a group room, general office, office/meeting room, library, extra toilets, PE store to the school hall and a hall extension and storage.

The total gross internal area of the new build is 439sq m on the school's site of 1.29 hectares.

"The main works are located centrally in the school and consist of a twostorey extension providing all of the accommodation...with the exception of the hall extension.

"A new classroom, extended library area, administrative areas together with toilets and storage, are provided at ground floor, together with two further classrooms, a group room and accessible toilet at first floor level," the statement adds.

"The extension to the hall provides much needed additional space for the school for when a function is held in the parish hall."

The main extension is two storeys high and ties in with the extension completed in 2013.

Its first floor will be clad in horizontal weatherboarding to reflect the scheme from five years ago and the ground floor will have a brickwork exterior to match the existing school.

Bersted Parish Council is reviving its parish festival after a year's absence to provide a bumper day for every age.

The event will take place from 10am4pm on July 15 at Jubilee Field off Chalcraft Lane.

A council spokesman said: "There will be lots of fun for all the family, including children's entertainment, a bouncy castle, zorbing, mascots and indoor and outdoor stalls.

"This year there is also a radio controlled and model aircraft display, dog agility display, and classic and

military vehicles."

Other entertainment will come from the live music stage, with performances from BUGS Ukulele Band, TS Montrose Band, Sussex Steel Band and Oakville Pete Band.

A wide range of refreshments will be available on the day as well. This will include a licensed bar.

The parish councillors agreed to put on the festival as part of their community activities. Entrance is free with parking available.

Graham puts heart into cycle challenge

New bid for help to protect beach f Graham Watson outside Buckingham Palace after an earlier ride RETIRED Aldingbourne pilot Graham Watson is set to cycle 100 miles just before he turns 70.

Graham will be among the 15,000 riders of all abilities who will taking on the inaugural Velo South closed-road sportive in September.

He is using the event, just ten days before his 70th birthday, to thank the British Heart Foundation (BHF) which has played a leading role in keeping him healthy. He was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat in 2013 - some 20 years after his mum, Betty, underwent a lifesaving triple heart bypass operation.

The former sailor said: "After leaving the navy I became a commercial pilot and, during a medical to update my licence, they detected an anomaly caused by the narrowing of a blood vessel.

"Fortunately, they spotted it early and

I'm on medication to manage it.

"My mum went on to live for another two decades after her major operation, until Alzheimer's took her five years ago.

"The BHF does such a fantastic job and it's great to be riding Velo South for a charity that helped to keep us both alive."

He left the Navy in 1989 after 24 years' combined service as a Chief Petty Officer, Aircrewman and Search & Rescue Diver.

Velo South will be Graham's first 100mile cycle challenge. It will take cyclists through stunning West Sussex countryside and has around 1,700m of climbing to make it a tough but unforgettable day of riding. Entrants are travelling from around the country and abroad and are expected to raise millions of pounds for charity.

"I didn't start cycling properly until I turned 64," said Graham. "My partner, Debbie, and I used to go cycling on

holidays but got fed up not being able to do it during the winter months, so I bought a road bike."

He cycles twice a week and goes out on 30-50 miles rides with a friend weekly. He is stepping up his riding to 65 mile routes before the Velo South on September 22.

He said: "I've cycled 84 miles before, but never 100. Velo South's last climb, up Harting Hill, does concern me because it comes near the end and I'll be shattered by then - but I do like a challenge."

Liam O'Reilly, the BHF's third party events lead, said: "The stories of why our amazing supporters take part never fail to amaze me.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Graham and around 150 others take on this 100mile cycling challenge for the BHF, which will help us put the brakes on heart and circulatory disease for good."

FURTHER bids are being made to get government funding for essential works to protect Pagham.

An initial attempt to receive backing from the government's Department for Communities and Local Government only resulted in a list of potential alternative sources of cash.

Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall has asked the area’s MP, Nick Gibb, to seek a meeting with the department’s secretary of state, James Brokenshire, to explain how serious the situation has become.

Cllr Radmall told the parish council’s meeting last week: “There are 1,600 homes at risk from flooding.

"Some of the seafront bungalows have settlement cracks where their foundations have been undermined.

“We need to have plans put in place to protect our community. Nick Gibb has been doing some good work for us and I will be supplying him with more information in an attempt to get some money from the government.”

Cllr Radmall repeated his belief four groynes in the most vulnerable area of the beach would help to stop the continued erosion of shingle.

These would cost £500,000 and be a mixture of timber with a rock fantail.

They would enable the shingle placed on the beach naturally, or put on the beach by Arun District Council, to stay there instead of being swept away by the tides.

He stated the most vulnerable area was by Pagham Yacht Club. Some storm water overtopped the beach there during last winter.

Cllr Phil Hailey said the coastal issues group set up to tackle the situation would consider groynes when its beach action plan was compiled.

“This will be a thought out plan.

It is not about making knee-jerk responses. We will not have decisions being made on the hoof,” he said. "“It’s important to set out the issues and discuss them round the table.

“Our next meeting will be in October. Hopefully, we will be a long way forward by then.

“There is ongoing monitoring of the situation to see how things go. It is being watched very carefully.”

The group’s members also include Arun and Chichester councils, Natural England, the RSPB and the Environment Agency.

` Cars on show A CLASSIC film will see the biggest motor gala in the Bognor Regis area extended into the evening for the first time.

Family favourite Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be shown on the big screen at this weekend's A Drive Through Time in Silverston Avenue.

The exploits of the flying car can be enjoyed from 5pm-8pm on Sunday in West Park.

This year's gala is the seventh to be held by Bognor Regis Town Council and will feature the usual array of classic and vintage motor vehicles.

More than 100 of them are expected to be on show. They will date from the 1920s to the early years of this century.

There will also be a lot more to enjoy. The British Grand Prix will be shown live on a big screen and a host of craft and charity stalls will be present to enjoy.

Live music, a kidszone and a hog roast and barbecue will be available as well.

The last rainfall in June recorded

by Andrew Goodwill at his home weather station was 0.3mm on June 16 to take the month's total rainfall to 34.5mm.

The hottest day was June 29 when his thermometer reached 32.1C/89.8F and the coldest was the 8.7C recorded on June 13.

Both the wettest day and the windiest day on average was June 14 at 0.6mm of rain and 12.1mph.

Bid to protect town garden A GREEN light for a bid to protect an open space in Bognor Regis site has been given by town councillors.

Members of Bognor Regis Town Council voted overwhelmingly to support the application to make the Hothamton Sunken Garden a village green. The legal recognition will stop it being developed if the proposal is accepted by West Sussex County Council in its role as the commons registration authority.

The Sunken Garden will be swept away under Arun District Council’s regeneration proposal for a linear park, which would also include the current Hothamton car park. But Cllr Jan Cosgrove said the present green space should be recognised for its importance in the town centre.

“I can get the town green application in within two weeks. There is a considerable amount of support in the town,” he told the town council’s meeting on Monday.

“I believe the way forward on this is to get this site recognised with as much support as possible," he said.

“With the town council supporting this tonight, it shows this is achievable as well as telling Arun they can’t do what they want with the land. I believe we have the means here to put a stop to something that I find extremely difficult to accept – piecemeal development.

“First of all, Arun will put in plans for a linear park and then the flats. That’s not the way the masterplan envisages that area to be developed.”

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said: “We are desperately short of green space

in our town. There are so many links between peoples’ mental health and their ability to access parks and green spaces.

“This is an extremely important issue and I am supporting this motion.

“The Sunken Garden absolutely needs investment and there are issues with antisocial behaviour. The community wants this issue dealt with but we do not have to have the green space ripped out.”

But Cllr Sandra Daniells (I, Pevensey) said: “It may be that you are successful in having the Sunken Garden registered as a village green but you will halt any development going on there forever.”

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said the linear park proposals featured a host of attractions for people of all ages. They would include a water feature, a pavilion and a play area.

The debate took place under the town council’s urgency rules, rather than wait two months, after Cllr Cosgrove argued time was tight to stop the linear park plans.

“The urgency is that Arun’s planning application is ready to go and it will take quite a while to get the village green application put through the government department. We need some action on it to be able to influence Arun’s timescale in receiving planning permission for the linear park,” he said.

Anyone can apply to register land as a town or village green under the Commons Act 2006. The application must show the land has been freely used by a significant number of people for recreation for at least 20 years.

Members show they are good sports by taking on volunteers VOLUNTEERS and members of the Arun Sports Association for the Disabled took on each other in a series of challenges.

The competitions took place on the last sports afternoon staged by the association before its summer break.

The events in which the contestants lined up against each other at the Arena Sports Centre in Bognor Regis included boccia, darts and short mat bowls.

Members of Bognor Regis Rotary Club volunteer at the weekly events and help to run the afternoon sessions.

Club spokesman Peter Stemp said: "It was a fun afternoon and medals and cups were presented to ASAD members

by Bognor Regis Rotary Club president David Cousins.

The Sunday afternoon sessions will resume at the usual time of 2pm-4pm on October 7.

ASAD was formed in May 1979 and has been based at the Arena centre since it opened off Westloats Lane 20 years later.

Sports offered to its members are boccia, table tennis, short mat bowls, darts and new age kurling. They are specifically tailored for disabled people and help to build their confidence.

Bowls sessions are also held at Arun Indoor Bowling Club in Nyewood Lane and, when the weather permits, at Arundel Bowling Club in the summer.

Homes meet ruling - claim

ONE OF the biggest developers in Pagham claims its scheme passes the latest Euro environmental tests.

Hanbury (PM) Ltd says its proposal for 400 homes is in line with the judgement by European judges.

Its environmental consultant, Ecology Solutions, state no further studies are needed as a result of the court decision.

As reported, this says the impact of a development on a heavily-protected site has to be considered by planning authorities like Arun District Council without taking into account the mitigation measures put forward by developers.

Hanbury’s plan covers 23 hectares of land south of Summer Lane and stretches towards the boundary of the natural reserve. The harbour’s wetlands have earned it the worldwide status of a Ramsar site, as well as European and British environmental protection.

Terns and black-bellied geese are among the birds who use the harbour.

A total of 824 letters of objection to the plans had been received by Arun by Tuesday afternoon among 2,806 for all the housing schemes.

At Pagham Parish Council’s meeting last week, members agreed to monitor the situation. Its clerk, Nicola Swann, suggested they consider hiring environment expert Petra Billings once Arun had completed its study into the ruling.

Cllr Ray Radmall, the parish council’s chairman, said: “I believe the judgement that has come from Europe will help us as it relates to wildlife.”

Cllr David Huntley said he doubted the housing could be stopped.

“Arun wants to build houses in Pagham.

It helps them meet their housing targets.

“They also receive the community infrastructure levy, Section 106 money (to improve infrastructure to cope with the extra residents), new homes bonus – and it’s in their interest to allow all these developments regardless of environmental issues,” he said.

As well as Hanbury, three more proposals have been submitted for homes in Pagham to take the total to more than 1,000. None have yet been decided by Arun.

Park goes back in time with sundial TIME has stood still in a Bognor Regis park.

One of the historic features of Hotham Park has been restored. The new sundial recreates one from the 18th century.

The installation of the replacement is thanks to Hotham Park Heritage Trust after a year of research, planning, preparation and skilful crafting.

The horological feature was installed by its maker, Harriet James, and stonemason Mark Rawlins last week.

Its original pedestal, which had been damaged over the years, was also installed as part of the project.

Rosemary Warren, the trust's chairman, said: "The original sundial,

Trevor fronts campaign A RESERVE soldier from Bognor Regis has become the face of an army recruitment campaign.

Lance Corporal Trevor Francis is helping to advertise the benefits of combining a career as a soldier with civvy street.

His photograph was used to promote last week's national reserves day to show how the soldiers helped their country, their company and their community.

LCpl Francis, 45, serves with 4th Battalion The Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment (PWRR) based in Cosham, Portsmouth, in his spare time but works as a self-employed plasterer.

He began his military career as a regular soldier with 2 PWRR in 1989 and served with it for about six years. He left the army after the regiment was reformed and began to train as a plasterer.

He said: "I have found my happy medium. I am in a good position. Working for myself I get to choose my hours and, therefore, give time to both as and when I choose.

"I wouldn't change my decision to leave the

regular army and start life as a civilian but the one thing I missed greatly was the camaraderie."

This led him in 2014 to decide he wanted to return to military life.

"I missed being surrounded by like-minded people," he said. "The military offers a different pace of life and anyone who has served with PWRR understands what being part of the 'Tigers' family' means."

He joined 3 PWRR and transferred to 4 PWRR when it was formed last September.

He is revelling in his role as one of the older personnel in the unit and being able to pass on his experiences and skills and help the younger Tigers.

"Being in the military gives me the drive and discipline I require in my civilian role when I am working independently," he added. "It makes me a happier and more confident person.

"In the military, you are predominantly working as a team but there are times that require you to work alone and I feel comfortable doing both because of the roles I do."

Mr Dakeyne headed the inquiry between September 19 and 28 last year. He heard representations from council officers and developers and opponents of the housing.

He has spent the eight months since then considering the evidence and also other representations. He has also sought further information from the district council.

The local plan will act as the land use blueprint for the Arun district until 2031 also sets aside land to be kept as open space, for the creation of jobs among other uses and to regenerate and protect town and village centres.

The plan determines 20,000 homes should be built from 20112031 to provide a range of housing types, such as affordable homes.

Cllr John Charles, Arun's cabinet member for planning, said: "A huge amount of work has gone into creating the Arun local plan.

"I am delighted at the comments from the inspector. It is indeed an achievement and, although there are likely to be challenges along the way, we have a solid plan to guide us and clear targets to aim for."

Regeneration survey agreed A SOCIAL media poll is to be carried out

by Bognor Regis town councillors about the future of regeneration.

The online survey will take place while the councillors ask Arun District Council to think again about its proposals for two key sites in the town.

The decisions were agreed by a decisive majority of Bognor Regis Town Council members on Monday 10-2, with two abstentions.

But the vote took place after town councillor Damien Enticott (L, Hatherleigh) walked out of the debate.

Cllr Enticott had proposed a newspaper poll at the town council’s previous meeting in May to enable more public consultation into the schemes for the Hothamton and Regis Centre sites to be carried out.

He was unhappy the final motion agreed by councillors was put forward by just two members on a working group.

It was wrong such a small number should change the ideas from an earlier meeting, he complained.

“It should be at least half of the councillors who do that,” he said before he left the council chamber.

The final recommendation was proposed by his Labour colleague, Cllr Jan Cosgrove (Orchard). It states: “That the town council approach Arun District Council to see if there is any interest in them meeting with developers, who have a realistic prospect of carrying schemes through, and seeing what common ground can be found.”

It committed the town council to spending less than £250 on its online poll, which could reach at least 55,000

residents in the PO21 and PO22 area.

The poll will ask their name, ages, post code and to rate the regeneration schemes – there could be at least four – in order of preference in a process overseen by six town councillors. September 1 would be its start date and it could last for two weeks. A town hall display, with a ballot box for votes, would complement the social media survey.

Cllr Cosgrove said it was vital residents had a say in what happened on the two major sites.

“This is not Arun’s land we are talking about. It’s our land. It belongs to Bognor Regis. When Arun disappears, hopefully, it will be ceded to the next council. These are the last two publicly owned spaces we have in the town," he said.

“Arun seem to think they don’t have to deal with anyone. This is time for this council to tell Arun on behalf of our town we don’t want a half-baked scheme but a realistic development.”

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said it was important to remember the idea for more public consultation arose at the annual electors’ meeting last March.

“Our electorate has asked us to move this one. We should vote for this,” he said.

But Cllr Sandra Daniells (I, Pevensey) said Arun had carried out a major consultation into the proposed schemes in 2015.

“Regeneration schemes always take a long time and, whatever is built on those sites, has to be viable. If you criticise Arun, they will shut you out. But, if accept they are going to go ahead, you might be able to have some influence on them," she said

Town council to investigate if it can help to bring back Rox ROX could return to Bognor Regis next year.

The prospect of bringing back the popular summer music and arts festival, absent from this year's calendar of events, will be considered by the town council.

The council's events, promotion and events committee will consider if the council can work with the Rox Organisation to stage the crowd-puller for three years from 2019 as a result of a motion put to the town council on Monday by Cllr Jan Cosgrove.

His proposal stated: "That the council agrees to explore a partnership with the Rox charity and deliver the Rox

The idea of EqualiTeas was devised by MPs to bring communities together to discuss what equality means to them.

Tea parties have a long tradition as part of the campaign for equal votes. They became hotbeds of political activism as one of the few ways women could meet without men to discuss and plan.

The afternoon also asked for a wishlist if the guests became the Prime Minister.

The answers included 'seeing unicorns every day', 'bring back national service' and 'create an English space programme'.

BROWNIES in Pagham and Aldwick held an EqualiTea party to celebrate a centenary of women voting.

The young members of the 1st Pagham and Aldwick troop staged the special occasion to mark 100 years since women property owners over 30 and men aged 21 plus were given the right to vote and 90 years since all over 21s could vote.

They invited a variety of guests to their special occasion and were joined by Arun District Council chairman, Cllr Alan Gammon, Cllr Phil Woodall, deputy town mayor of Bognor Regis, Aldwick parish councillor Jan Rufey, Girlguiding Bognor Regis Division Commissioner Karen Railton, Guiding friends and members of the Trefoil Guild, as well as their families.

The patient information session will take place at 7pm next Tuesday at Maywood Surgery in Hawthorn Road. It will feature the launch of social prescribing, known as confident connections nationally, which links people to support or services in their community to improve their health and wellbeing.

A spokesman for the Maywood Patient Group said: "This may be about finding out some information about an issue, or joining a group or club or getting support for something. The topics are varied as they are in life.

"A trained member of staff will talk through your issues and see what help is available locally. Anyone can be referred by any member of staff at Maywood."

Kate is a muddy marvel for charity

Kate, 24, is getting ready for tomorrow's Portsmouth Pretty Muddy 5k charity run in aid of Cancer Research UK. She will be raising further funds to add to the £800-plus she has brought in so far.

She said: "I started running as a bit of fun. I saw entering charity races as a great way to keep fit and have a goal to work towards.

"After a few races, I was spurred on to keep going when my own family was affected by the disease.

"I'm really proud of what I've achieved and, although the next challenge is going

Performances highlight musicians' talents as music festival continues YOUNG musicians showed their skills at an annual festival in Bognor Regis.

They took to the stage at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road to delight the audience by playing instruments such as the piano, guitar and violin.

One of the youngest was seven-yearold pianist Arabella Trent. Her proud mother, Margaretha Trent, said: “It’s great to hear her play on stage. It’s really pleasurable.”

Arabella, who attends Bury Primary School in the South Downs, began playing the violin when she was three and switched to the piano at five.

She played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the Westminster Chimes to start the performer's platform for those aged 12 and under at the festival’s music performance classes on Sunday.

“She was really nervous but they are really supportive here and it is a nice relaxing environment,” said Mrs Trent.

Another six performers took part in the non-competitive class. They included Bosham Primary School Freddy Laing, 10, who played tunes from James Bond and an old French song on the guitar.

He said: “I have got a lot of instruments and I just felt I wanted to play the guitar.

It’s quite calming. When I feel a bit upset, it’s good to play on it.

“It was my public performance. It was nerve-wracking but I feel quite good now.”

Dorothy Gatrell, 12, a Felpham Community College pupil, played two tunes on her violin for her public debut.

“I was really nervous at the beginning but I got more confident as my performance progressed. I enjoy learning the instrument. Once you have finished that, you can get better and better at playing it.

“Playing music is a block from everything else for a little while.”

Sisters Emilia Vonk, eight, and Salome Vonk, 11, were two of the other performers.

They had begun the day’s performances in a trio with their father, Tjeerd Vonk, 43. He and Emilia were on guitar and Salome played the violin for a Hungarian dance tune.

Mr Vonk, of Aldwick, said: “It was our first performance as a family. It was nice to play instruments together and perform together.

“It was different to playing on your own because you have to listen to the rhythm of the others.”

The day’s adjudicator, school music director Alison Sutton, told the musicians: “That was a very enjoyable class – really well done. If that was your first time on stage, you all looked really confident and your confidence will just grow the more you do.”

But she did tell the performers to ensure they practised the ends of their tunes as much as they had the beginning sequences.

More than 50 performers aged from five to 73 took part on Sunday in a range of classes for guitar, harp, singing, brass, woodwind, string ensemble and cello.

Four senior performers ended the day.

The festival will end with an evening gala this Sunday. It will feature a final concert, prize-giving and an exhibition of works by festival performers aged 6-18 inspired by music and musicians.

The festival began with a wine and cheese evening on June 17. This was followed by an illustrated talk by Anthony Lindsey about the composer, Frederick Chopin.

June 24 saw gifted young pianist Amy Luc, a former student at the school, perform the first recital of the festival with works by Brahms and Chopin in keeping with the festival’s theme.

She was followed last Saturday evening by prize-winning Welsh pianist Luke Jones. He has won several prizes in Britain and Europe for his expertise on the keyboard.

His programme consisted of works by Brahms, Schubert and Chopin.

Wednesday night featured a performance by the young musicians illustrated by their drawings and paintings after the success of the event’s introduction last year.

The Regis School of Music was founded in 1996 by Mr Levtov and his wife, Nina, to promote classical music among all ages. It stages regular performances by professional musicians from around the world as well as hosting musical tuition.

` Rock'n'roll night MUSIC from the sixties will have Barnham Community Hall rocking at a charity concert this month.

That'll Be The Day will be full of rock and roll and music by The Shadows to raise money for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

It will take place from 7.30pmmidnight on July 14.

A spokesman for the organisers said: "Many of the musicians who are performing at the event played semi-professionally and made demo discs with bands along the south coast and London in the 1960s.

"They played with, supported or covered the music of The Beatles, The Shadows, Cliff Richard, The Animals, Jeff Beck, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, PJ Proby and a host of other music from that era."

The musicians taking part meet at a Thursday afternoon workshop set up in the village hall many years ago by drummer Roy Clark and guitarists Dave Johnson, John Owen and Steve Wood.

Several other musicians have since joined in.

` Garage break-ins TOOLS, food and drink were stolen when a garage in Ley Road, Felpham, was broken into overnight on June 21. An insecure garage in Silverston Avenue, Bognor Regis, was broken into on June 24. No items were stolen.

Couple celebrate 65 years LOVE blossomed on a bus between Aldwick couple Ken and Sylvia Green.

The couple met on the service from Bognor Regis town centre to their then homes in North Bersted.

They followed up on that initial chance encounter by meeting at a dance at the Rex Ballroom that night – and are still together 65 years later.

The one-way ticket to togetherness led to them celebrating their blue sapphire anniversary last Wednesday night with members of their family of two children, four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Mrs Green said: “We have had a lot of help from our families. They have always been supportive. You take things for granted but then realise we have been together for a long time.”

Mr Green said: “I was asked on our 50th anniversary what had contributed to 50 years of a good marriage.

“I was going to say tolerance but, before I could say that, Sylvia said something that really hit the nail on the head - ‘When you know you have the right partner, you just make it work'."

The fateful journey for the couple, both 85, occurred on Christmas Eve 1952.

Bognorian Mr Green was home on leave from the army and had bought a bunch of flowers to give to his mum at their home in Bedford Avenue.

Mrs Green, who grew up in Watford, had just moved to Chichester Road with her family and was also on the bus home.

The couple stayed together and became engaged in March, 1952 and married at Holy Cross Church in North Bersted in June, 1953.

They moved to Ripon army barracks

before Mr Green was sent to Korea for a year when its war was raging.

After being transferred to Hong Kong for ten months, he left the army as a corporal and came back to Bognor Regis.

He worked for a small builder’s merchant in London for about a year,

before he joined Hall & Co builder’s merchant in Lyon Street West in Bognor Regis town centre for many years.

A further spell with a Horsham company in the same business followed until his retirement.

Mrs Green worked in Finlay’s tobacconist shop next to what is now

New Look in the London Road precinct and had two spells at a lampshade manufacturer in the town before she became a waitress at Leslie’s Café in the High Street.

Mr and Mrs Green have lived in their current home in Tangmere Gardens for 40 years.

Business hub due to open in few months SOME 150 businesses will be supported at any time by a new commercial centre in Bognor Regis.

The town's creative digital hub is set to open later this year in two former waiting rooms at the railway station.

The spaces at the Grade-II listed Edwardian building are being transformed into shared flexible workspaces where emerging creative and digital businesses can thrive.

It will provide a creative place totalling 360sq m where start-ups and freelances can work side-by-side, share facilities, network with each other and have access to training and support.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb was invited to visit the site by West Sussex County Council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith, to look at plans for the design of the hub's interior. He said he was hugely supportive of the project.

"The hub will be a brilliant boost for Bognor Regis, giving small business and self-employed people a space to work together, hold meetings and bring together the business community in the area," he said.

Cllr Goldsmith said: "It's so important that the key people got together at this crucial stage in the project.

"We had a really lively discussion about

the positive impact the hub will have on Bognor Regis and the local economy, and it was fantastic to see the plans for the interior coming to life."

The hub's creation is being led by the county council, which has appointed Hemingway Design for the interior and Town Square Spaces, jointly owned by Gareth Jones, as its operator.

Mr Gibb has also given his backing to the latest summer reading campaign based on the Beano comic.

The Mischief Makers challenge celebrates the 80th anniversary of the comic.

Children who go to Bognor Regis and Willowhale libraries from July 14 will be given a colourful collector's map of Beanotown to keep a record of their reading journey.

They will collect stickers as they get through at least six library books over the summer to help famous characters Dennis, Gnasher and friends find the buried treasure.

Mr Gibb said the challenge was free, inclusive and made reading fun.

"Last year, 15,214 children took part. I hope we can increase that number this year and remind local libraries what a valuable asset they are to us and our community," he said.

` Arrival of walkers

A TEAM of seven walkers is set to arrive at Bognor Regis this weekend.

The trekkers are due to reach the town's pier in the early afternoon on Sunday after they have followed the Bryson Lane route.

Named after author Bill Bryson, the route stretches 569 miles from Cape Wrath and is the shortest distance across Britain without having to cross any water.

The path was identified by Mr Bryson in a 2015 book and the walkers - six fellow Americans and one Briton - were inspired to walk a route based on it to raise £100,000 for five charities.

They were making good progress earlier this week as their month on a variety of walks and trails comes to an end.

` Ticks warning

RESIDENTS who enjoy the West Sussex countryside in the summer have been urged to protect themselves against tick bites.

Ticks can transmit bacteria that cause diseases like Lyme disease through bites.

In the worst cases, the disease can cause symptoms like tiredness that last for years.

Cllr Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for adults and health, said: "You can prevent tick bites by walking on clearly defined paths, using insect repellant and making regular tick checks."

Symptoms of Lyme disease usually include a circular red rash around the tick bite.

Benefit move is welcomed GOVERNMENT minister Alok Sharma has heralded the extension of universal credit in the Post area.

The benefit began to apply to thousands of claimants around Bognor Regis and Chichester from Wednesday.

Alok Sharma, the minister for employment, said it was revolutionising welfare by making work pay.

“Universal credit is central to our commitment to help families improve their lives by moving into work,” he said.

“We know it’s working – with universal credit people are moving into work faster and staying longer than under the old system. And now we are rolling it out to wider range of people in a safe and controlled way.

“From today, more people, including families and disabled people, can claim universal credit and access the extra help it provides.”

Universal credit is now supporting all claimant types, including people with disabilities, families and low earners, as well as jobseekers.

Families who receive the benefit and who move into work can now claim back up to 85 per cent of their eligible childcare costs to potentially boost their finances by more than £13,000 a year.

The aim of universal credit is to simplify the benefits system and also help those who are in work to increase their hours and earnings.

It replaces six benefits with one monthly payment and has been claimed for

several months in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas by single jobseekers.

Anyone who would have made a claim to income-based jobseeker’s allowance, employment and support allowance, income support, working and child tax credit and housing benefit will claim universal credit instead.

In answer to criticisms, the government improved universal credit to make it easier for people to move on to universal credit.

Karen Brooks, the Jobcentre Plus relationship manager for Bognor Regis and Chichester, said: “Universal credit offers tailored support, which includes more personalised help from a work coach. The new system is also more flexible, which means people can take on short-term work to develop their skills and build up their experience.

“Our staff are trained to support people throughout the claim process. We’d encourage anyone who needs extra help or information to come and talk to their work coach.”

Those on universal credit have 24-hour access to an online account they can use to manage their claim. The benefit decreases gradually as claimants earn more when they are in work and working families can receive up to 85 per cent of their eligible childcare costs.

As reported, Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice has urged claimants to seek help if they have any difficulties with universal credit.

School is still on schedule PLANS to keep a school in North Bersted open are only a back-up, its head has said.

A planning application has been submitted to enable Chichester Free School to continue to use the former Bartons County Infant School site until next July.

But the free school's acting principal, Jenny Clough, has told parents and carers the intended move into the converted Carmelite Convent is still set to go ahead this September.

"The building works at the permanent site are progressing extremely well and the road and footpath works are moving along at a great pace as witnessed by many members of staff who visited the

site this week.

"We are on schedule to move the whole school into the convent for September."

The application had prompted talk on social media. But she said: "As with all businesses, we have to have contingency planning should an unforeseen event happen.

"This application is a prudent move as an emergency back up only. All our plans are focussed on moving both primary and secondary schools to the convent in September."

As reported, the free school revived education on the former infant school in Romney Broadwalk last September after it had been vacant for several years. The

permission to occupy the site expires this summer and the Education and Skills Funding Agency put in the latest proposal to Arun District Council on the school's behalf. The number of pupils will increase from 390 to 420.

The application, which is dated last May 31, says that 'it may not be feasible for all pupils to move for the start of the 201/19 academic year.

"As such, it is proposed that the primary school may need to continue to operate at its existing temporary site at the former Bartons County Infant School until the start of the following school year (September, 2019)." But it also makes clear the school could move earlier.

Prizes for winning children ARTISTIC children from around Bognor Regis have chalked up successes with their outdoor drawings.

They were the best among the some 30 entries who took part in Bognor Regis Town Council's first Chalk Challenge.

The children were given sticks of chalk and asked to create a drawing in support of the council's Playing Out campaign as part of a national initiative to enable children to be able to play outdoors by closing the roads outside their homes for a short time.

Winners were presented with their prizes, certificates and rosettes by the town's mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, in the town hall on Monday.

They included eight-year-old Caitlin Woods.

She said: "I drew a pink football pitch because I thought it would be fun. I drew it outside my house and I would like to play outside."

Another winner, Zara Horn, six, drew a

family portrait about 50cms x 50cms. She said: "I drew a picture of my family, including our cat, Casper, on the patio at the front of our house."

Town council projects officer Sheila Hodgson said: "The judges had a tough job choosing the best entries.

"I hope the competition prompts some parents to organise a Playing Out session in their roads. The town council will help them as much as we can with the organisation.

"All it will take is a couple of hours of their time. It is a successful idea around the country and can be here as well."

Prizes, certificates and rosettes were presented by Cllr Reynolds to: Lily Peter and Roxy Winter, Daniel Richards, Tommy Morgan, Oliver Cumptsey, Grace Cumptsey, Perdy Vigar, Aurelia West, Frankie-James Andrews, Laura Dudek, Zara Horn, Subaita Ahamed and Caitlin Woods.

` Food hygiene ONE IN five West Sussex restaurants and takeaways have a hygiene rating of adequate or lower.

West Sussex trading standards and environmental health officers are encouraging the businesses to take part in a workshop to help them to improve their ratings. The ratings from 1-5 are usually put on show by food businesses to demonstrate their level of hygiene as part of a national scheme to help residents choose where to eat or shop for food.

A county council spokesman said: "We believe that with the right support and encouragement we can help our lower scoring food businesses make the necessary changes to improve their food hygiene ratings."

SOUTHDOWNS Concert Band presents A String of Pearls concert to celebrate its 30 years of musical entertainment.

The concert takes place at 7.30pm next Friday at Boxgrove Priory and includes works from 633 Squadron, Crown Imperial, Strauss Horn Ensemble and Les Miserables. Tickets are £10 adults and under-16s free from the Festival of Chichester Box Office.

The band was formed in early 1988

by Geoff Lewis. Its first conductor was David Moore. Initial rehearsals were held at Shoreham but now take place at Arundel C of E School.

City's ghost written book with a difference f Irwin Mitchell employees have backed making arts available

Project makes arts accessible NATIONAL law firm Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth's Chichester office has teamed up with Chichester Festival Theatre to support its campaign to help everyone enjoy live art.

The Ageless campaign intends to raise awareness and funds for the work the theatre does in its surrounding community to help bring the arts to everyone, particularly older people who are at risk of isolation.

During Ageless Week, the theatre held a special programme of free dementia and family-friendly events to highlight the important work and to bring people together.

Various colleagues at Irwin Mitchell attended. They included the regional manager, Paula James.

MORE ghost stories about Chichester have been put into print by author Julia Macfarlane and her fellow writers.

They have produced the second edition of their best-selling book, Chichester Ghost Tour - A Self-Guided Walk, after the success of last year's initial version.

Julia said: "It was a case of having to.

Not only have shop names changed but new ghost stories have been revealed as a consequence of the first book being published. Chichester is a surprisingly spooky city."

Irwin Mitchell's Chichester office is heavily involved with the community.

The book is being launched tomorrow with a guided tour as part of the Festival of Chichester. Julia will lead the tour, with her fellow published writer, Helen Christmas. The tour was a great success in 2017 and has been repeated several times for private groups.

One big family at Chalcraft Hall…

CHALCRAFT HALL Care Home manager Sara Whitworth is someone whose job is very much a labour of love. THat much is evident when you hear her speak so passionately about the residents at the North Bersted home.

Sara oversees the day-to-day running of the care home which considers its patients as very much part of "one big family". THat family consists of 20 folks living with dementia as well as the 25 caring staff members who see to their every need Sara explains: "We have a busy diary with the emphasis very much on maintaining a home-from-home atmosphere. Twice a week we have musicians come in then we have singalongs with music right through from the 50s to the 80s, which is very popular.

“THe residents love singing along to the songs. THey know all the words. We’re certainly not a home where the residents sit around bored all day.”

"Relatives often join us for the activities, and these also includes quizzes, bingo and periods of time for reminiscences."

Sara's comments come after the home made substantial investment to improve the care on offer.

She adds: “It’s all about creating the best first impression we can. THe old drive was deteriorating and required upgrading, which we are always committed to doing here.

Replacing it has opened up the entrance to the home and made it safer and easier for visitors.

“We listened to feedback from our residents’ relatives about the need to improve the old entrance. It took three months from its planning to completion, but it was well worth the effort.”

But, as important as initial impressions are, Sara is equally aware standards inside the home must be maintained to a high standard as well.

"It was a massive relief for me to know that she was being cared for as an individual and being given time to adapt to her new surroundings."

Local business celebrates national independents month A FIERCE desire to improve the lives of its clients is helping a flourishing, familyrun business in Bognor Regis earn heaps of praise.

Customers desperate to regain independence through the purchase of mobility scooters have their needs met by the friendly team at Mobility and Comfort in the town's Queensway.

It is very much a labour of love for members of the Donnelly family, who recognise an obligation to try to help restore independent living to those who

are in search of the freedom provided by mobility solutions.

THe business came into being twelve years ago when owner Micky Donnelly set up his own concern following a spell servicing wheel chairs and mobility scooters.

THe runaway success meant that before long, Micky’s daughter Chloe joined the company, shortly followed by wife Suzanne, son Michael as well as Chloe’s partner, Ryan.

Tufnell school in learning support, says she feels that an empathetic understanding of the unique needs of each client is essential when delivering the right solution.

She explained: "Losing any kind of independence is obviously incredibly difficult, so we ensure we have an understanding of that at the forefront of our service. But we can help with a wide range of options for you, and we pride ourselves in helping you choose the right one specific to your needs.

"To be fair that has earned us a lot of praise from our lovely clients and it is such a rewarding aspect of what we do.

For the same price, the 28/2017 Parcel Series Nelson Sauvignon Blanc is a welcome change from the usual Marlborough examples. Think greenhouse aromas and this herbaceous example, where crisp citrus and gooseberry flavours abound, is decidedly yummy and one to snap up!

But another Parcel Series wine , namely the 25/NV Hampshire English Quality Sparkling Wine from the renowned Hambledon Wineries, on offer for just £22.48, really captured my attention.

Bronzed gold in colour reflecting ageing and its mature style, this fine sparkler is

nutty on the nose with a hint of baked apple pie , sumptuous on the palate with lemon meringue pie acidity and hints of brioche and great on its own or as a pair to a roast chicken dish. Pure English delight, à mon avis!

I have concentrated on the above as great summer drinks, but have to mention three reds of note for evening consumption.

The Finca Carelio 2015 Tempranillo Vino de la Tierra was originally destined to be a £15 special release from the Toro

region of Spain , but , having erroneously been sent outside the region for bottling, had to be downgraded to a lower status Vino de la Tiera and thus retails at just £7.99 and is a crowd-pleaser, being complex and rich with aromas of ripe blackberries, leather and vanilla and is a true bargain.

For an offer price of £10.99, the Jim Barry Cover Drive 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in French and American oak and has intense cassis and cedar on the nose and succulent tannins framing blackcurrant, liquorice and

cherry flavours and one you could allow to age for five years or more.

My final little indulgence was one of my favourite wines, namely a 2015 Rustenberg John X Merriman Stellenbosch, named after the man who purchased a farm in 1892 which later became Rustenberg Wines.

This wine is a feast of blackcurrant and cassis with subtle oak and soft tannins and on offer at £15.99 is one you should treat yourself to and drink as you devour your roast beef or lamb - Happy Days and merci, Ellie!

Community News & Views THE DAY has finally arrived and Amiri Construction have handed over the beautiful new building to the Aldingbourne Trust.

The exterior of the building really does look fantastic!

The use of the two tone cedar shingles, gabion walling and wooden decking cleverly helps the building become part of the landscape.

The car park Tarmac has now been laid and the parking lines painted. The external decking areas are almost complete and on a sunny summer day it will be very easy to imagine customers sitting outside having a relaxing coffee!

Internally, the attention to detail and the quality of the fit and finish is superb. There is a contemporary light and airy feel to the interior that is much bigger than the outside of the building would suggest.

The lime green feature walls look striking against the crisp white interior. The multiple lighting units are all fitted and working and the media display screens are all in place.

With the kitchen tiling and ancillaries in place, the fit out for the new kitchen will take place in the next couple of weeks.

One of the most exciting features of the new building is the stainless steel slide! It loops in a spiral from the first to the ground floor and is sure to be popular with children and adults alike.

Amiri project manager Adrian, pre-construction co-ordinator Emma and blogging team member Ben were very happy to give it a thorough testing!

The centre is not open to visitors just yet but the wait will be worth it as this unique building certainly has the wow factor.

Everyone who comes along will certainly find something quite amazing and there is going to be something for everyone.

As the trust is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – these new facilities will certainly mark the occasion as an incredible achievement.

ORGANISERS of Bognor Regis illuminations gala have begun the countdown to the annual event.

The night-time spectacle, pictured above, is due to light up the resort on August bank holiday Sunday and is often seen as the traditional end of the main summer season.

It might still seem early days for summer but the members of the team at Bognor Regis Seafront Lights which is planning the event are already looking ahead to the end of next month.

They have invited any club, society, charity, church, community interest company, business or individual who wants to take part in one of the town's biggest crowdpullers to start to think about their entries.

EMPLOYEES in a Chichester firm have raised £2,000 in memory of a late colleague.

A team of 33 workers from Covers Timber and Builders Merchants was sponsored to complete the Moonlight Walk for St Wilfrid's Hospice.

They undertook the challenge in memory of the much-missed Kev Starling, who worked at the company for more than 40 years before he passed away at the hospice last January.

Passingham said: "Last year's crowd was unprecedented, helped by extensive advertising, which included a radio campaign.

"What better opportunity to not only get your group or business noticed by a huge captive audience, but also get involved in a real community event that helps to make Bognor Regis the brightest place to be?"

Categories include float or vehicle, walking group, pram or bicycle and dance troupe.

Cash and trophies are up for grabs for the entries placed first, second and third in each grouping.

Improvements to the seafront lighting will be funded by the gala.

Sir, On behalf of myself, local war hero John Seal, and his extended family, I would like to extend sincere thanks to the local community, the local newspapers, our extraordinary caregivers, and everyone across the nation for the tremendous support showed in trying to track down the war medals that were stolen from John’s home in Chichester last weekend.

Our client, John Seal, 98, had his five Second World War medals stolen in a burglary on the night of June 23. The medals were an African star, Italy Star, two end of World War Two medals and a Battle of Britain medal.

Two of our caregivers, Sharon Gregory and Dave Pearce, went above and beyond their call of duty to support of John, pictured below, and I am so proud of them and how they handled themselves in this unfortunate situation. We hire staff at Home Instead Senior Care based on their desire to care, and we are extremely lucky to have such passionate and selfless people on our team.

Sharon said of the ordeal: “As soon as I turned up in the morning, I knew something wasn’t right. The most important thing in all of this is that John wasn’t harmed, but it is a tragedy that someone would target him in this manner.

“I have come to know John and his family very well over the past two years, and he is one of the loveliest people I know. I always enjoy my time with him, and we have all been overwhelmed with the national support since the story went viral. We would love for John to get his medals back.”

Dave, another one of John’s regular caregivers, stayed two nights after the break-in for no pay of his own accord, just to give John the comfort and reassurance that someone was there with him. Dave didn’t want John to be alone after the burglary.

He treats his clients as if they were his own parents, and he hopes he was able to put John and his family at ease, knowing that someone was there with him after dark.

John’s nephew, also called Jon, posted an appeal on Facebook which has been shared more than 70,000 times. One medal collector has even presented Mr Seal with a replacement set of the British medals. John’s family has been amazed by the support and it has restored their faith in human nature.

Sir, In the near future, Arun District Council will vote on two planning applications hoping to build upwards of 500 houses on fields to the west of Pagham Road, Pagham.

These fields are prime agricultural land and serve as a buffer between Pagham village and the very nearby Pagham Harbour nature reserve.

Pagham Harbour is no ordinary nature reserve. It is of international scientific importance and thousands of people visit every year.

Professional organisations such as the RSPB, Sussex Ornithological Society, Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England - along with hundreds of local people - have all objected to these applications.

Pagham Harbour is a rare natural asset and, surely, a jewel in the Arun district crown.

Why then would Arun consider such a large development so close to such a sensitive site and in the face of so much professional and heartfelt objection?

If these developments go ahead, the damage will be done.

There is no going back.

There is considerable local concern that Arun appear to give more credit to the lure of the developers' fools' gold than the informed views of local residents and agencies.

It is not too late to object to these two planning applications.

'Lady Betty' was one of first buses in town Vehicle was nanmed after the daughter of the pioneer of services THERE was once a time when you could see buses on TV or sit and watch several and purely by its size, colour or design match exactly which company the vehicle belonged to.

Today, it is very different, as we see a national name now on so many of our trains and buses, providing no identity with a location. Early transport always evokes such happy memories for people. I will just provide an insight into some of the earlier transport in the town.

The first means of transport was, of course, the coach and horses that used to operate throughout the country and for this area we would see the arrival of the coaches at the New Inn, today the William Hardwicke, on their

way from London en route to Portsmouth.

The journey from London could take in excess of 12 hours and would have been very arduous through the wind and rain for some without any protection. These journeys would have been taken across very poor roads and have ensured that the passengers were very tired on arrival at their chosen destination.

Eventually, motorised transport was introduced and Arthur Davies was to pioneer the early services in this town when he opened his first premises in 1903. He operated from Beach House on The Esplanade as a motor and cycle hire business, until expanding in 1907 to new premises at Nos 2 and 4 West Street where he was also a motor cycle agent.

operated his fleet of five charabancs, each with 29 seats, which were to become a feature around the town.

Eventually, many of his vehicles were garaged behind No 8 West Street, where today we have Seaward Court in West St. Arthur Davies advertised you could book seats and be taken twice a day to local places of interest, which included Arundel, Swanbourne Lane, Goodwood, Selsey and Chichester.

One of his most profitable routes was from Chichester to Portsmouth, costing 5s. 0d.

(25p). Arthur Davies’s services were recorded as the first regular bus service in our vicinity.

His most successful service was between Bognor and Portsmouth, which began in 1914.

The Davies’s vehicles were known locally as the ‘Lady’ cars and were a regular sight standing outside the pier waiting for their customers. One of his vehicles was known as the ‘Lady Betty’ and named after his daughter whose second name was Betty.

One of his early day trips was to the then famous Stamp House, the then Bersted Tavern, recently changed to a Tesco store, on Chichester Road in North Bersted. Arthur Davies was a great family man and there are numerous pictures of him with his wife and his beloved daughter, Florence Betty.

Tragically, Florence died at the age of 13 and, as a result of this and increasing ill-health, he sold his thriving business in 1915 to a new company – Southdown Bus Company.

It was on June 2, 1915, the Southdown Bus Company was formed with the amalgamation of three Sussex concerns - Brighton, Hove and Preston United, the Worthing Motor Services and South Coast Haulage Co. The Bognor home for the Southdown Bus Company was for many years Beach House, and it was to be the central hub for the Midhurst and Petworth service, which connected with the Aldershot and District Traction Company and the Chichester, Selsey service. The original aim of Southdown was that their green and cream buses were to offer an above average standard of comfort, and they were to be kept sparkling clean.

Southdown employed Arthur Davies as its first manager of the Bognor garage, in its office at the end of Norfolk Street, but sadly he died

three years later in 1918.

Davies’s successful Bognor to Portsmouth service continued and the new Southdown Bus Company extended it to Worthing and then Brighton, this became the No 31 route.

Eventually, the number of bus services increased, as did the number of companies in the locality.

There are records to show that there were about 16 companies, which tried to operate bus services between 1915 and 1926. In September, 1921, a police survey was held to ascertain the number of buses operating on the Bognor to Chichester route over the period of one week. The result was a staggering 611 buses and this compared to 63 buses per week just two years earlier.

By 1930, the Traffic Commissioners came into being and only the ‘Silver Queen’ operated between Bognor and Slindon, and continued until the Second World War. Passengers were beginning to get very particular and required a reliable and well-regulated service, which could be maintained only by a large company.

Many of the smaller concerns closed down.

In 1919, Southdown built new premises in Lyon Street, which today is a block of flats.

These premises were the scene of one of Bognor’s famous fires when, in 1923, a blaze engulfed the garage with the loss of 14 buses.

The company brought in buses from other areas to maintain the links for the town, as it took pride in its service to passengers. The garage was expanded in 1926.

Southdown Buses, of course, have been synonymous with the High Street, remembered for many years by the front of the art deco bus station that was built in 1934.

It still operated from its Lyon Street garage until 1950 when the company transferred the garaging of vehicles to the rear of the bus station. In 1962, Southdown took over the drill hall in Bedford Street, which had been used by the Sussex Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association and which today is part of Morrison’s car park.

Southdown continued to operate in the High Street until the 1980s when the bus depot was moved to Chichester, leaving the town and, in 1993, the Southdown façade of the bus station was taken down.

Teen triathlete Leo makes his mark PostSport as PBs keep coming for Chi's youth TEEN triathlete Leo Stallard is making his mark on the national scene as he continues to surge up the UK rankings.

In a recent British Milers Club meeting in Eltham, Kent, the 16-year-old smashed his previous best in the 5,000 metres by over half a minute to record 15 minutes 43 seconds and climb to 18th in the UK rankings.

With improvements in the swim and on the bike, too, the Bishop Luffa student will look to keep on improving as the season moves on.

Stallard is one of a number of youngsters at Chichester Runners and Athletics Club to be making big improvements this year.

The group of under-20s and under-17s are set to join their senior colleagues for the next round of Southern Athletics League competition on Saturday, July 14, at Salisbury.

Among those looking for improvements will be Ben Collins, who made a breakthrough in the 800 metres at the Kent meeting to cross the line in 1 minute 58 seconds.

He will be joined by Ben Morton, who registered a new best of 9.06 in the 3,000 metres at the last track meet in Brighton, a 15 seconds improvement on his 2017 mark.

For the women’s under-20s, Alice CoxRusbridge transformed her excellent cross country form to the track, completing the 1,500 metres in just over five minutes before dominating the steeplechase in 5.36.4 to stand 21st in the UK rankings in her first attempt at the event.

The top performances at Brighton in the men’s under-17 match were from Max Lambkin, who set three personal bests. A speedy 62 seconds in the 400 metres hurdles was followed by 11.8 for the 100 metres and 23.6 in the 200 metres.

Liam Dunne also showed a good turn of speed with a 53.6 in the 400 metres while Niall Mears and Alfie Spurle formed a new partnership in the 800 metres with both athletes just outside 2 minutes 20 seconds.

In the women’s events, Worthing-based Eloise Longhurst made her first appearance in a Chichester vest and notched up a good mark of 10.34 in the triple jump.

Emily Russell scored good points for the club while Phoebe Pontet continued her fine season’s form in the 80 metres hurdles.

Finally, thrower Lucie Munday gained two runners-up spots in discus and hammer.

DARTS: The Friary Z trio of Richard Ragless, Micky Rowland & Dave Owens were the toast of the town after scooping the Bognor Summer Darts League Division One trebles title.

Nine teams took part in the competition at the Newtown Social Club, which also saw the Division Two and Three trophies decided.

After defeating Andy Cooper, Buster Barton & Derrick Longhurst (Claremont) in the semis, the Friary Z trio faced teammates Lee Franklin, Billy Collins & Rob Collins (Friary Z) in the final.

After losing the first leg, it was Ragless who spurred his side into action, hitting 81 and a ton before firing double top to equal things up.

The last leg saw good scoring on both sides. Collins junior and Franklin missed chances at the double, leaving Owens with a shot, and with his first dart he hit double eight to take the leg, taking the match 2-1, and the Division 1 title.

In Division Two, the final was between Len Dixey, Gary Harwood & Les Mullinder (Royal Oak) and Andy Chant & Ian Dendy (Aldwick Legion) along with Lee Hellyer (Newtown Amity) who was without a side after none of his team-mates wanted to play. It was the latter who won the first darts and they got off to a nice start with 85 from Chant and 100 from Hellyer.

A ton from Dendy followed, to leave 60, but Chant missed his chance. Then Hellyer stepped up and hit double 16 with his last dart to take the first leg.

The second leg saw Chant, Dendy & Hellyer take the lead. A couple of good scores saw them get the first chance at the double, but misses gave the Oak team chances.

Unfortunately, they couldn't capitalise, and Dendy hit double one to take the leg, and the title for his team.

Dragonflyers are set for a bright future

BOGNOR'S young trampolinists have a spring in their step after an excellent first showing at a regional competition.

New young members of the Regis Schoolbased Dragonflyers club did themselves and the club proud as they sailed into the Isle of Wight for their first regional novice event .

Five performers came away with bronze medals in CDP three category and one in the CDP one.

Of these, the stand-out was Ros Gillam, placed second in the aged 7 to 11 CDP 3 event.

There have been some good results for the older cohort of the club, too.

Sofija Kalnicenko and Izzy Hauxwell took fourth place in the elite Open Regional Synchro Championships while Libby Morton, competing at just one step below national level, finished fourth in a Grade D Open Age Mixed Gender Competition.

Success just keeps on coming for the senior jumpers as Kalnicenko took a prestigious gold medal the previous week at the Performance

Pathway Spring Series 2 in Sheffield in the 13/14 years group.

Competing against some of the best jumpers in the country, Sofija delighted her support team and coaches by obtaining a personal best at time of flight and horizontal displacement.

It's been a year to remember for the Chichester Free School pupil. Sofia made the UK's top 8 qualifiers for national finals later this year and has also qualified for league one national finals, placing her among the best in her age group in the UK. All in all, Dragonflyers have taken seven national medals in little over a month, a remarkable feat for a small club.

Dragonflyers, which is a club mark trampoline club, recently started offering people of all ages recreational sessions.

There is also coaching available for varying abilities throughout the week and anyone is invited to come along and discover more.

In Division Three, Simon Edwards, Tom O'Sullivan & Michael Hoare (Richmond 'B') faced off against Graeme Dutton, Jill Mitchell & Mark Wingate (Newtown Clubbers).

Richmond 'B' start first and although they took the lead, scores of 85 and 121 from Dutton, and 95 from Wingate saw them pull it back. Both teams struggled on the double before O'Sullivan hit single one and double two to take the first leg.

The second leg saw a closer match all the way to the double. Wingate missed a chance at double top for the leg, but Edwards missed a shot at 77. Every player had a chance at the doubles, but eventually it was Hoare who hit double one to seal the title for Richmond B.

Pagham win four in a row as Webb catches Stirlands out

Lass the star in points race OLYMPIANS and international champions sailed into Chichester Harbour for a finfilled weekend of classic keel boat racing.

Last week Itchenor Sailing Club held its annual Points Week, with crews on the 56 boats taking part.

With conditions perfect, 25 X One Designs raced for daily trophies and the Benson Platter for the week’s winner.

17 Sunbeams, celebrating their 95th anniversary, competed for the Wengen Cow Bell, while the Buccaneer Trophy was the target for the 14 Swallows.

The first race on Monday saw current XOD champion John Tremlett drive Lass to victory followed by former Benson Platter winner, Mark Palmer in Sweet X. Andy Oddie, himself a national champion, was third in Magic Dragon.

Former XOD champion Alastair Ashford visiting from Antigua showed well on Foxglove but navigation let him down as a mark was missed.

On Tuesday, the Ashfords made no errors to seal the win, followed by another former XOD champion Michael Martell sailing Astralita with Lass again on the podium.

By Wednesday Lass bounced back. And with racing postponed on Thursday it was left to two races on Friday to decide the winner. The first race podium was Sweet X, Foxglove and Astralita.

But in the tense final, Lass made no mistake with a victory followed by Sweet X to take the title with Foxglove second overall and Sweet X third.

In the Swallow fleet current and past national champions joined ex-world champions to compete for the overall Buccaneer Trophy.

Class stalwarts Charles Fisher and Richard Thompson in Migrant who won the first.

But, after that, others took control and the overall title went to Harry and Prue Roome in Skua. In second was Archon, under the direction of former America's Cup skipper Andy Green, while Osprey and James Hartley, Jeremy Sibthorp and Robert Sutherland came third.

In the Sunbeam, the overall title went to Fleury, helmed

by Joe and Cathy Burney, who showed exceptional skil throughout.

Query and Tim Hill were second and Polly, with Nick Leach and Simon O’Hea, took the final podium spot.

PAGHAM will be chasing their fifth win on the row as they keep up the pressure at the top of Sussex Division Three West.

After a topsy-turvy start to the season, Stuart Hanks' side have found their feet in recent weeks, chalking up four consecutive wins in their surge up to third in the table.

The latest was a 70-run victory over secondplaced Stirlands, which has put them just eight points behind their opponents.

Pagham can continue their winning form tomorrow when they welcome secondbottom Worthing to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (8.30am).

They will hoping that all-rounder Rico Webb can continue his swashbuckling form. The win against Stirlands owed a lot to his batting as he smashed 83 from just 56 balls.

Along with skipper Hanks (56), the pair added 93 for the sixth wicket to guide Pagham from 81-5 to 229 all out.

In reply, Webb showed his worth with the ball chipping in with three wickets as the home side did not allow Stirlands to settle.

With Nikki Tabberer (3-20) and Justin Scott (3-49) also pitching in, Stirlands could only reach 159 all out.

Middleton face leaders Roffey

MIDDLETON CC face a tough task as they look to win their first in three when they travel to league leaders Roffey tomorrow (12pm).

At the halfway mark of the season, Sean Heather's side are eighth in the Sussex Premier Division, just one place above the dropzone.

Middleton were denied a crucial victory last time out when they were unable to take the final wicket against second-bottom Ifield.

That draw means that the Sea Lane side are just 22 points above the relegation zone in a division where a win gives teams at least 20

points. The gap could have been so much more if Middleton had not been frustrated by a gallant final wicket partnership by Ifield.

After batting first, Heather (95) and Mahesh Rawat (110*) inspired the visitors to 274 for 5 in just short of 55 overs, by far the biggest total this season.

In reply, Russell Talman (3-34) and Craig Fowle (4-71) made inroads into the Ifield batting order. But they held out to reach the 55 over mark with one wicket to spare, registering 198 for 9 to frustrate Middleton.

Park will be looking to get their fading promotion hopes back on the road as they head to bottom side Lindfield (12.30pm).

Chi will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss to St James's Montefiore last weekend. After batting first, Peter Lamb (55) and Matthew Bennison (51) inspired Chi to 216 for eight in 53 overs.

Despite registering a good total, St James's went about the chase with real confidence.

With opener Harry Rollings (108) leading the way, their efforts never looked in vain as they reached the total with five wickets and more than nine overs to spare.

A home match against third-place Haywards Heath at the Regis Oval is not the easiest match for a team that is low on confidence (12.30pm).

Bognor lost narrowly last time out by just 17 runs away at Bexhill. An excellent bowling performance from Marquino Mindley (4-50) and Josh Sargeant (4-47) restricted the home side to 189 all out. But even an inspired 78 from skipper Ryan Maskell could not take Bognor past the total. * The Sussex Cricket League has given all sides permission to move the start times or tea breaks of their Saturday matches to allow players to watch the England v Sweden World Cup quarter final from 3pm.

Progress is the aim for new Blues boss SELSEY manager Daren Pearce has lofty ambitions at his new club - although he refuses to be drawn on whether the Blues can launch a promotion push.

The former Sidlesham gaffer has been a busy man in the last six weeks as he looks to bring the good times back to the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium.

With a number of players following him from the Recreation Ground, Pearce has assembled a young hungry squad who are now well into their pre-season preparations.

But despite leading the Sids' promotion from SCFL Division Two last season, he said repeating the feat at the next step up would be tough. Instead, the focus will be on improving on Selsey's eighth place finish in SCFL

Division One last time out.

Pearce said: "The target is progression on last year. The club have not set us any specific targets but the idea is to progress on where we finished last year and build for the future. That means having younger lads around the club.

"We will be running an under 18s, under 23s and a first team - that's what we want moving forward, to get good young talent and then we can build on that."

Selsey kick off the pre-season fixtures at home to Wessex Premier side Horndean next Tuesday (7.45pm) before welcoming Bostik Premier side Worthing on July 14 (3pm) Swapping places with Pearce at Sidlesham is former Blues boss Steve Bailey, with Selsey striker Morgan Forry among his signings.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is urging fans not to worry - despite only 11 players being signed up to play for the Rocks next season.

The club's relegation from National South last season has seen a number of players leave Nyewood Lane.

As Pearce and his first team coach Robbie Blake look to rebuild the squad for the return to step three, they have so far retained nine players and brought in two more.

With no goalkeeper and only one recognised frontman signed on, more arrivals are a certainty. But Pearce is adamant that, given his limited budget, he wants to make sure the people he brings in offer quality, versatility and can fit in with the way Bognor play football.

Pearce made the comments as the Rocks' pre-season preparations continued.

Much of the focus in the first few weeks will be on fitness before the squad moves on to shape the brand of possession football which has been such a feature of matches at the Nye Camp.

Pre-season also gives Pearce the chance to run the rule over a number of trialists as he looks to finalise the squad for the coming year.

He said: “Training was fine and the lads looked in good shape which is always encouraging.

"At this time of year, it’s always a question of patience when you are looking to recruit new

players.

"Holidays don’t help either, with players you have and those you want often away. But we remain confident that we will be in good shape once the big kick-off arrives.”

Quite who Bognor will be playing on opening day is still not known.

The Isthmian League announced this week that fixtures will be released on July 19 - less than a month before the season starts.

Fans will no doubt be keen to put games against Sussex rivals Worthing, Whitehawk, Lewes and Burgess Hill in their diaries.

The return to the league also throws up trips to Tonbrdge Angels, Wingate & Finchley and Enfield Town, all of whom the Rocks have had some epic tussles with over the years.

Before then, though, there is pre-season to deal with and Bognor fans have two headline matches to look forward to.

The first is next Tuesday (July 17) when Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s visit Nyewood Lane. With the Seagulls in the Premier League, the quality of their youth setup has improved dramatically in recent years so it will be a good test for Pearce's side.

Then the following week is a visit from League One Portsmouth (July 24, 7.45pm) where Kenny Jackett is sure to bring a strong side for the match.

Both games are expected to bring good crowds which will boost the club's coffers.

Rocks looking to the future REBUILDING a squad from scratch every season is never an easy thing to do.

But, after 40 years of pulling teams together in a mad few summer weeks, Jack Pearce knows a thing or too about assembling a side that can tackle a full season of fixtures.

Central to the Bognor manager's philosophy is always keeping a core of the previous year's side together.

A few older heads are added before filling out the remaining of the spaces with young, hungry players who have plenty to prove.

One avenue that remains open to Pearce is Chichester College, where former first team coach Darin Killpartrick is head of football and remains committed to his students forming the Bognor under-19s side.

Then there are those who have been released by football league clubs, with Chad Field, Jimmy Muitt and Calvin Davies coming to Nyewood via this route in previous years.

These players tend to want to wait for the best offer to come along - which means it is normally only a few days before the season starts before the squad is finalised.

While it may be late in the day, the approach does deliver quality. And with that usually comes results, which is what all fans want.

PRE-SEASON is underway, Nyewood Lane is looking shipshape after weeks of hard work and the fixtures are soon to be released.

Yes, it is nearly time for the Rocks to return to league action.

But with the start of the Bostik Premier season little more than a month away, what sort of shape is the Bognor squad in?

Here's a look at the players so far - and some suggestions on where Jack Pearce may be looking to improve on if the side are to be in the running to return to National South at the first time of asking.

COACHING STAFF - The departure of long-serving first team coach Darin Killpartrick from the Nye Camp dugout after more than 1,000 games left a big hole in the heart of the club.

But Pearce moved quickly to secure the services of former Portsmouth coach Robbie Blake, who will bring new ideas and a professional experience to the club.

Pompey players past and present are full of praise for the impact that Blake had.

A striker by trade for a string of Premier League and Championship sides, Blake will be tasked with getting the Rocks firing after netting less than a goal a game in the relegation campaign last term.

The other main question is around the manager position.

Pearce stepped into the breech last season after Sami El-Abd's extremely short tenure.

With no likely contender coming forward, expect Pearce to stay in this role for the time being.

GOALKEEPER - This position has been one of the strongest for the Rocks in recent seasons, which is wholly down to the standout play of Dan Lincoln.

But the former Reading keeper has yet to commit

his future to the club for the coming season.

The long commute from Berkshire means that Lincoln favours signing for a club closer to home. It would be no surprise to see a new man between the sticks at the Nye Camp on opening day.

DEFENDERS - Pearce acted quickly to secure the services of a number of last year's squad in this area.

Young centre halves Corey Heath and Chad Field should form a formidable partnership providing they can stay fit while keeping England C captain Keaton Wood is a real coup. Fans will be delighted to see Calvin Davies back in the white and green too after a stand-out season at right back.

If there is a place to improve, it is left back where James Crane leaves a big hole. Expect to see at least one new addition in this area to provide cover.

MIDFIELD - Last year's player of the season Doug Tuck will anchor the Rocks midfield next year.

Keeping local lads Tommy Block and Harvey Whyte will be key to Pearce's possession football while the return of the experienced Dan Beck and addition of young left-sided player Harvey Sparks will bring nous and pace.

But question marks do remain about the amount of creativity in the centre of the park. A right winger and goalscoring midfielder would be welcome additions before the season starts.

FORWARD - The biggest headache comes up front.

Bognor scored less than a goal a game last year and cannot afford a repeat of that.

Jimmy Muitt will score goals at the his level and Tommy Scutt will continue his development. But what Rocks fans really want is a tall strong striker who could score 25 goals a season.
