Call to make dualcarriageway safer TWO LANES should become one in Shripney to make the village safer, a council has urged.

Bersted Parish Council said the dualcarriageway section of the A29 should be moved out of the village for the sake of its residents as well as motorists.

The request was agreed by councillors as part of their comments to West Sussex County Council's strategic transport investment programme.

Cllr Gill Yeates, chairman of the parish council's plannng, amenities and environment committee, said: "The A29 is a dual-carriageway until part-way through the village. There are not many villages which suffer from this hazard.

"The dual-carriageway needs to be reduced to single lane before the village which will avoid the ability or need to speed to get past slower moving traffic before the road becomes singlecarriageway. There is some urgency to this request for the safety not just of local residents but all road users.

"If there is no plan to resolve this in place, either now or for the future, land which would be required could well be used for other purposes, preventing a resolution ever being put in place. This would not support the regeneration of the town (Bognor Regis) for residential, business or leisure purposes."

The possible solution to the current situation would be to re-route the A29 alignment to the east of Shripney village, she said. This would mean the proposed new route for the road continued to the

roundabout to the south where the A29 and A259 cross instead of the current plans of ending before that.

"At the very least, ensure that the land is retained and not given permission for other uses which would prevent expected problems being solved in the future," she said.

The A29's current route funnels all the current and expected increases in traffic into Shripney. More than 3,000 homes are planned to the north and a large increase in industrial development is set to take place immediately to the south.

Cllr Yeates said: "At busy times, the road is already dangerous and this can only be exacerbated by the rise in the number of cars and, more particularly, heavy goods vehicles travelling along the curving road through the village."

The parish council's contribution to the potential strategic transport investment programme was to form a direct link from the A29 to the A259 relief road from the new business park at Salt Box Field, between the two roads, to remove the intention for vehicles to use Rowan Way. Re-routing the relief road through Salt Box Field to give direct and safe access to the industrial park will avoid the need for HGVs to use the pinch points of Rowan Way and Shripney village.

Cllr Mrs Yeates told the parish council: "It could be years before these ideas are looked at but at least we have taken part in this process. If we don't take part, then nothing will be done even if funding becomes available."

ROBOTS and bottle rockets will be among the attractions as the world of tomorrow arrives in Bognor Regis.

The latest community future fest at the town's campus of the University of Chichester takes place from 10am3pm tomorrow.

Visitors can expect a variety of outreach displays and activities for all ages across four zones - space, technology, creative and transport.

Lesley-Anne Neville, head of outreach and college engagement at the university, said: "We are expecting community future fest to be extremely busy and are looking forward to

meeting our visitors and getting them hands-on with science."

Other highlights will include an indoor planetarium, stop-motion animation, and building a torch.

Attendance is free but it is advisable to book a pass at: chi.ac.uk/futurefest This will be the second future fest after the success of last year's inaugural event.

The festival will take place next to the university's £35m tech park, which is due to open this autumn.

The building will bring together skills and expertise in engineering and digital technology.

Pupils are class act for recycling ideas

A ÂŁ500 donation has been given to The Regis School by the four town councillors for Hotham Ward enabling more environmentally friendly schemes to be put in place based on the ideas of some of the students.

Cllr Martin Smith, chairman of the council's community engagement and environment committee, presented the donation accompanied by fellow town councillor, Sandra Daniells.

The money will be used to buy recycling bins for classrooms and communal areas at the Westloats Lane school.

It was donated to the school from the ward allocation which town councillors receive each year to spend on projects which they believe deserve support.

A town council spokesman said the idea for the donation arose after an initial visit by committee members to the school for an open forum with some of the students.

"The students were particularly keen to discuss issues relating to recycling and came up with some valuable suggestions and comments that could be implemented in the school and in other places.

"They were very well informed and aware that, currently at their school, 18 bins per week of ordinary waste are collected compared with only six recycling.# "Yet it is 60-70 per cent cheaper for the school to have recycling bins collected 50 per cent of the ordinary waste could actually be recycled if they had more recycling bins."

As well as classrooms recycling bins, their other suggestions included rewards for collecting litter, appointing litter champions and replacing plastic knives, forks and straws in the canteen.

The students were equally inventive when it came to encouraging more recycling in the community.

They wanted town and district councils to begin awareness campaigns about the environmental damage which is being caused by litter, advertising to make litter anti-social and recycling bins with bigger holes for specific items to be placed in them.

The students' suggestions were debated by the town council committee's meeting on Monday.

Cllr Smith presented the cheque at a recent visit to the school to speak with A-level students about regeneration.

A NEW principal will take charge at Ormiston Six Villages Academy in Westergate next term.

Paul Slaughter will join the academy at the start of the new academic year.

He will take over from Pat Walters and Alan Westerman, the current joint principals, who have overseen pupils' education while the search for a new principal was ongoing.

Paul said: "The academy has achieved so much over the last two years and I look forward to working closely with the students, staff, parents, carers and the team at Ormiston Academies Trust to build on the fantastic legacy of my predecessor and ensure that Six Villages is the academy of choice in the local area.

"I believe strongly in the importance of getting to know every child as an individual and ensuring that we provide all our students with an education tailored to their individual needs, helping them to achieve their full potential.

"Over the next few months, I will be getting to know the school and community and plan to hit the ground running in September."

Mr Slaughter is a father of four and local man with nearly 18 years' teaching experience.

He is currently deputy head at Worthing High School, which was rated 'good' by Ofsted in 2016 with 'outstanding' leadership and management.

He began his career as a maths

teacher and has since worked at two schools in West Sussex.

In his present role, much of Mr Slaughter's focus has been on ensuring students make the transition into secondary education as successfully as possible. He has worked closely with local primary schools to achieve this.

From September, he will be working with Six Villages' senior leadership team, governors and the trust, which is responsible for the academy, to build on the work of his predecessor, Umbar Sharif, as he aims towards making the academy an outstanding school.

Last September saw Ofsted rate it 'good' with improving standards.

Antonio Betes, who chairs the academy's governing body, said: "The board and I look forward to working with Paul to drive further improvement at our academy as we continue on our journey towards outstanding, ensuring that every student at Six Villages succeeds."

Ormiston Academies Trust regional director south Luke Bowers said: "Paul is a fantastic appointment for the academy. We had planned to appoint a new principal from January, 2019, but were thrilled to find such an excellent candidate able to join us at the start of the new academic year.

"I look forward to working closely with him to ensure that the new school year gets off to a fantastic start..."

The academy, in Lime Avenue, has some 500 pupils.

` Seafront assault WITNESSES are being sought after a man suffered life-changing injuries in an assault on Bognor Regis seafront.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, was waiting to be picked up from The Esplanade around 1.30am on Sunday when he was approached by another man.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The suspect approached the victim outside Sheiks Nightclub and punched him in the face, causing facial injuries as well as a fractured skull.

"A 20-year-old man from West Wittering has attended a voluntary interview by appointment at Chichester police station under caution and enquiries now continue."

` Vehicle damaged A VANDAL badly damaged a vehicle parked in Sudley Road, Bognor Regis, by walking over it to cause dents to the roof during the evening of June 29.

` Equipment stolen MEDICAL equipment was stolen when a doctor's bag was taken from a vehicle in Arundel Road, Fontwell, between 1pm and 3pm on July 4.

There were reports of two other vehicles in the area being broken into at the same time.

Arun’s bid to have a valid local plan to enable councillors to control the location of development dates back more than three years and has cost more than £2m.

Mr Dalkeyne headed the latest public inquiry between September 19 and 28 last year. He put forward 67 modifications to Arun’s draft version.

A total of 63 were backed by councillors last January to leave four to be agreed.

They were passed after a 70 minute debate to mean sites in Hook Lane, Sefter Road and off Pagham Road are earmarked for a total of 1,200 homes. The ‘west of Bersted’ site next to Chalcraft Lane is set to see 2,500 homes built.

The figure for the Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate area is 3,000 homes, which will lead to a flyover and new A29 to replace the Woodgate level crossing.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said: “Over the last 50 years, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton have taken the lion’s share of development. These two towns have been dumped on and it’s continuing tonight should this plan be approved.

“Bognor Regis and Littlehampton should no longer be regarded as the depositary of future housing developments. They have been at the forefront for way too long."

Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Littlehampton Beach) said the development threatened

to wreck residents’ quality of life.

“Other countries put in the infrastructure before they put in the houses, factories and everything else.The sum total of all the thousands of houses built in the district is they have clearly over-stretched our infrastructure to bursting point already.”

Cllr Ann Rapnik (UKIP, Bersted) said: “I am absolutely amazed the inspector said this was a sound plan. Well over 35 per cent of the development is going to be in Pagham North, Pagham South and ‘west of Bersted’. " But Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said the £29m Felpham viaduct showed what could be achieved with money from developers. “If we have to have the housing, then it needs to be controlled with the infrastructure emanating from that to support it," he said.

Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E), the council’s leader, said: "We have to adopt the local plan to protect the area.

“In the planning process, we will insist all the infrastructure will need to be included in the proposals. If it is not, those applications will not be approved.

Arun cabinet member for planning, Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham), said failure to adopt the plan would leave the district at the mercy of developers.

“Every decision we have made has been based on evidence, not speculation,” he said. “The housing requirements meet the needs of our residents both now and in the future. This adds strength to the future regeneration and economic stability of our district for everyone.”

Twinning enthusiasts ensure coffee morning remains popular TWINNING association members in Bognor Regis had fun at one of the group's most popular occasions.

A good number of members turned up to the latest of its summer coffee mornings to make the most of the sunny weather.

The social occasion is always held in the garden of one of its members, weather permitting. This year saw it take place at the Felpham home of Alison Merriman.

James Clevett, the association's press officer, said: "It is an occasion when members sit around chatting and playing garden games.

"It is also an event that anyone interested in learning about the

association can go along to."

The association is twinned with three European towns. The first twinning took place with Place St Maur, in France, in 1979. This was followed by the German town of Weil am Rhein in 1987 on the River Rhine where it forms the border between Germany, Switzerland and France.

The latest twinning dates from 1996 and is with Trebbin, a town in the southwest corner of Germany next to the Swiss border.

Exchange visits between the towns take place in alternative years, with members staying in fellow members' homes. Social events take place during each year.

Seafront hotel plans gain backing from councillors

AMBITIOUS plans for a new hotel on Bognor Regis seafront have been agreed in principle by councillors.

They backed the idea of delivering the visitor facility as the first stage of the 3,000sq m Winter Gardens attraction to seek formal planning approval.

The decision to go ahead with the hotel was made by Arun district councillors behind closed doors on Wednesday.

As well as the hotel, they decided a bar should also be included in the initial phase of the multi-million pound regeneration of the Regis Centre site.

After the meeting, Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said: "It is great to see this fantastic project getting underway.

"These exciting plans will significantly regenerate the area."

Continued criticism of the council's plans for a linear park with flats and car parking at the other regeneration site of the Hothamton car park off Queensway was made by Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) earlier in the meeting.

He asked Arun leader Cllr Gillian Brown to consider the proposal agreed by residents at a public meeting last month about the linear park plan.

The motion agreed to seek tree preservation orders on all qualifying trees in and around the garden, produce clear plans about the proposals and hold a 'genuine, open, balanced and transparent' consultation.

But Cllr Mrs Brown said: "Tree preservation orders are used when there is a high risk of trees being felled."

The council had no intention of felling any trees before the forthcoming planning application for the linear park was completed.

"The next consultation event will be as part of the planning application process for the linear park," she said.

She added she was satisified with the consultation carried out to date.

As reported, the Sir Richard Hotham Project has received planning approval for its regeneration ideas for the sites.

Kenny's epic cycle ride KEEN fundraiser Kenny Smith is planning to conquer Britain by cycle in memory of his sister.

Kenny intends to pedal his way around the country for 50 days next summer in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Trust.

He hopes his lengthy time in the saddle to cover more than 2,655 miles will raise £50,000 for the charity. His solo cycle ride will celebrate what would have been the 50th birthday of his sister, Kathleen, and continue his pledge to keep her memory alive.

He said: "Kathleen lived with multiple sclerosis for all of her adult life, never letting it get her down.

"She was always smiling and enjoyed life as best she could but, in the autumn of 2014, Kathleen sadly passed away. But I vowed to keep her memory alive and since that dreadful day I have planned and organised many fundraising events, raising over £200,000 for the MS Trust."

Kenny, of St John's Close, will start his journey on June 12 in the centre of Chichester. He plans to return on Kathleen's 50th birthday on July 31.

"From Chichester I will head west along the coast via Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth and Exmouth to Land's End and from there up to Truro and Bude over the Severn Bridge and into Wales where I will climb Mount Snowdon.

"This will be the first of the three national highest peaks in the UK I plan to climb, leaving my bike at the foot of each mountain," said Kenny.

He will continue heading north through Manchester and Blackpool, and on to the mountains of Scotland. From the turning point of John O'Groat's, he will pass through Sunderland, Newcastle and York before the highlight of his journey - a visit to the MS Trust's main office at Letchworth for an emotional time.

He added: "From Letchworth, the ride will then take me through London down towards Dover and then along the coast through Hastings and Brighton and back to Chichester but not before riding through my parents' home village of Boxgrove and a visit to Kathleen's grave."

POLICE are keen to identify the woman pictured above as she might be able to help with an investigation into a theft in Bognor Regis.

A bag and its contents were taken from the town's Regis Centre during the early evening of July 3.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The victim was attending a class at the arts, music and drama venue when the theft occurred.

"Subsequently, bank cards taken from the bag were used at five local sites, including the Next fashion shop and the Burger King outlet at the Arun Retail Park in Shripney Road, Bognor Regis.

"Keys from the stolen bag were also used to enter and drive away the victim's car, a red Toyota Yaris."

Cancer test is vital - mum MUM Kady Hamm has urged women to undergo cervical screening after the test saved her life.

Kady has joined with another cancer survivor, Margaret Booker, to help organise a charity fundraising and awareness day on behalf of Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust.

Friends and relatives are rallying behind the Bognor Regis area pair to stage the event on September 2 at the Newtown Sports and Social Club in Greenwood Avenue, Bognor Regis.

The money raised will help the trust, as the only UK charity dedicated to women, their families, and friends affected by cervical cancer and cervical abnormalities.

Kady had a hysterectomy as part of her treatment but said she was so thankful to be able to look forward to the rest of her life. She said: "Cervical screening saved my life. I just want to highlight and voice how important it is. Earlier this year, a week before my 30th birthday, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 1B. "I began to show symptoms a few months after having my first baby last year but I wasn't too worried as I thought it was likely to be my hormones or the after-effects of having a baby.

"I went to my GP just to put my mind at rest and they thought the same.

However, I was due to have my cervical screening test so this was booked in.

"My results from my scan and further tests confirmed I had cancer. This was heartbreaking to me and my family.

"The following examinations and scans showed the best treatment for me would

be a radical hysterectomy.

"This was a major surgery but the results from the histology showed I would not need any further treatment, just regular check-ups, and my consultant says there is over a 95 per cent chance that this cancer will not return.

"If it wasn't for regular cervical screening, my course of treatment could have been different and a lot less positive.

"I know many women will feel embarrassed and may feel this will never happen to them, especially at this young age. But please do not be put off by this.

"A matter of minutes having your screening by official nurses, who see and do this all the time and will make no judgment, could make a big difference to your life."

For Margaret, her latest scan shows she is cancer-free. She was alerted to a potential problem last July after she had suffered from heavy bleeding.

Scans showed she had cervical cancer 2B and led to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy.

"I wish to thank my two children, who have been fantastic throughout, coping with me and also their emotions, travelling to and from hospital appointments and also my daughter-inlaw and son-in-law," she said.

"Hopefully, 2019 will be much better for me and Kady.

"It'll be lovely to see as many people as possible at the fun day. We will have fun stuff such as tombola, inflatables, a raffle, BBQ, craft stall, plant stall, cakes, face painting and much more."

It stated: "Jobcentres where universal credit full-service has been rolled out should be aware that this will affect comparisions to pre-rollout periods."

This was because a broader span of claimants would be registered than under the previous Jobseekers Allowance.

"As universal credit full service is rolled out, this means the number of people recorded as being on the claimant count is likely to rise," the department added.

Council updates intention to consult with the community AN UPDATED version of a planning document has been issued by Arun District Council.

The consultation about the changes to the statement of community involvement began last night and will last until 5pm on August 17.

A council spokesman said: "The statement of community involvement is a statutory document which sets out the way in which the council will engage with residents, communities, businesses, local organisations and other groups to ensure as many people as possible are able to have a say in planning decisions that affect them."

NEARLY 900 residents of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton were unemployed last month.

The jobless total for the parliamentary constituency stood at 895 in the latest figures released this week.

The number is an increase of 75 - or nine per cent - in a year. But far fewer individuals in the area are seeking work compared to the number in 2010.

The total is down by 822, or 48 per cent, and has also reduced by 665, for a 43 per cent drop in the past five years.

The situation is broadly similar in the Arun district area. The number of people who are unemployed is 1,125, for a six per cent increase of 65 individuals on a year earlier.

Unemployment among 18-24-yearolds in the Arun district was unchanged at 185 and was also well down on the numbers in 2010 and five years ago.

` Radio relaunch RADIO RESPECT is staging a relaunch day in Bognor Regis tomorrow.

The 24/7 internet station is staging the special day from 9.30am-5pm at its studio and shop in West Street.

A technical upgrade saw the station with its live shows and a team of dedicated volunteers offering advice and support about mental and physical health matters off air for a while.

Visitors tomorrow will be able to see the station broadcast live and look round its vinyl, CDs, cassettes and vintage hardware. Tea, coffee, cold soft drinks and snacks will be available, as well as mental health information.

Radio Respect is a partner of Pathfinder, West Sussex, which offers advice, information and help for people affected by mental health problems.

` Play Rangers PLAY Rangers return to Aldwick next week for the start of the school summer holidays. The popular sessions provide free fun suitable for children aged five to 16 years using a range of equipment with the help of the qualified rangers.

They will be at West Park and Avisford Park, in Nyetimber, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from next week until the last week of August.

The West Park sessions will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm and those in Avisford Park will take place 2.30pm-4.30pm.

The events are funded by Aldwick Parish Council.

Adam uses music to raise awareness RAPPER Adam Turner is staging a special night of music in Bognor Regis to show mental health matters.

Adam has enrolled some of friends to ensure tonight's event from 7pmmidnight at the Newtown Social Club in Greencourt Drive is one to remember.

The event is raising money for the foundation set up in memory of the late town soldier Daniel Johnston, who died two months ago.

"The night is in remembrance of my friend, Danny Johnston, who took his life through post traumatic stress disorder.

"He was a lovely guy and special to a lot of people," said Adam. "I wanted to do an event in his remembrance.

"Mental health is such a big subject at the moment and I don't think that the government has the resources to be able to help in the proper way.

"I suffer from depression and anxiety.

I found it extremely difficult and had to wait for up to six months for an appointment to speak to somebody about it."

Adam will headline the gig backed by a line-up of musicians who are travelling from around Sussex to take part for free.

They include grime artists IFF and Mister.Smith, Kayncee, Spraxa and Marshall Mandiango with his covers of Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars.

Entry will be £2 on the night and the goodwill from the venue and the PA suppliers, who are donating their services, means as much money as possible will go to the foundation.

Town centre resident Adam, 31, is casting for The Recording Studio, a BBC One show, at the end of this month.

Participants will be shown using a professional studio to record a song which is special to them.

Kate's muddy money maker MUDDY marvellous Kate Mills was hosed down by firefighters on her latest fundraising event.

Bognor Regis resident Kate enjoyed the unorthodox cooling off method when she completed the Pretty Muddy course for Cancer Research UK. This was ninth year Kate, 24, had taken part in a fundraising activity for the charity. Her latest effort brought in £307 for the charity's work to take her total amount raised to £1,100-plus.

Kate completed the course alongside her mum, Diane, in 63 minutes in temperatures that climbed past 30C to make the 5km challenge harder than usual.

Kate said: "It was certainly one of the tougher years to undertake the challenge.

The heat was extremely intense at times.

"But, luckily, the local firefighters were on hand to provide welcome relief by hosing us down with water and keeping us cool as we ran the course."

The challenge took place in Portsmouth and saw Kate, who is sales and operations supervisor at West Sussex fire safety firm Allsaved, and Diane crawl, climb and scramble across the course while they got covered from head to toe in sludge.

Some of her work colleagues cheered her on throughout and greeted her at the finish line with congratulations, hugs and well-deserved bottles of water.

Kate enjoyed herself so much she intends to take part in the charity's Race for Life next year.

World records set at petrol heads haven in scorching temperatures

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CELEBRATIONS were in order at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with 70 years of Porsche and 25 years of the festival and world records broken.

Among the triumphs was the victory in the Top Ten Shootout with Romain Dumas making history as first electricpowered Shoot Out winner.

The Frenchman mustered the third fastest ascent of the hill in the festival’s 25-year history. The former Le Mans winner managed a scarcely-believable time of 43.86sec aboard the four-wheel drive Volkswagen I.D R Pikes Peak hillclimber, marking the first time an electric car has claimed the prize.

Visitors were also able to witness the first ever jetpack flight on the festival’s famous hillclimb. The world’s most advanced JetPack, the JB11, successfully completed its first ever European flight debut flown by expert pilot, David Mayman.

The central feature at the Goodwood Festival of Speed celebrated Porsche, who took centre stage with cars through the years parked up and daytime fireworks and banners revealed on Goodwood House to mark the 70th anniversary of the supercar manufacturer.

The spectacular centrepiece was created by British artist and designer Gerry Judah, who has been masterminding the central features at the Festival of Speed for 21 years.

The sculpture stood impressively in front of Goodwood House and at 52m high, towered above the entire event.

One single, narrow spine, starting at

only 12cm wide on the ground, shoots vertically, to explode into seven pointed spindles, on which six iconic Porsches sit dramatically at each end, with the seventh spindle pointing sharply into the sky. The design and creation of the central feature is a complex process and construction and erection was by Littlehampton Welding.

Three fires broke out over Friday and Saturday, including a suspected oil leak from a Lexus which was extinguished after black smoke filled the air.

The four-day event pulled in crowds from across the country to see drivers battle it out on the track, including Formula One Mercedes driver, Valtteri Bottas, former Formula One drivers, Jenson Button, Mark Webber and Sir Jackie Stewart.

Other famous faces included stuntman and world record holder Terry Grant, who wowed crowds by performing a spectacular stunt and record-breaker involving driving around the track and the hill climb on just two wheels.

The Festival of Speed Future Lab was back with even more visions of future technology after its debut success last year.

This year, the theme focused on space exploration, autonomous transport, robotics and personal flight, with Siemens, Samsung, Randox, Roborace and DHL hosting activations along with a host of other exciting exhibitions.

Roborace’s Robocar became the first ever driver-less race car to complete the hillclimb over the weekend.

The run is the first in the history of Goodwood to be completed by a race car that has no human driver in the car.

Jamie Holder, from Newcastle,

travelled with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Steven, aged seven, and Lucy, aged five.

He said: “We always come here but missed last year sadly due to a family wedding. It’s such a great day out for the whole family, not just car enthusiasts, as there is stuff for everyone.”

Sarah added: “I really enjoyed the Future Lab bit, they scanned my face and did a 3D model of it which was really strange to see, but it’s very interesting.”

A second world record was broken when the Vodafone XBlades Drone the ‘Wingcopter XBR’ - set a new drone speed world record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Wingcopter XBR, piloted by world champion drone racing pilot, Luke Bannister, achieved a top speed average of 240.06 kilometres per hour.

A 1977 911S Porsche with its distinctive 70s colour scheme sold to someone at Bonhams on Friday for £125,000, against an estimate of £20-£30,000.

The car was introduced to a packed Bonhams marquee by the actress, Sofia Helin, who plays Detective Saga Norén in popular Scandi-noir TV drama, The Bridge, in which the Porsche has featured for several years. All the money is going to the Water Aid charity.

Petrol heads only have a two month wait for the next motoring Goodwood event.

The Revival weekend will take place September 7-9 and is sure to thrill anyone with a passion for classic cars.

Dodie offers chance to tap FORMER tap dancing teacher Dodie Tombs has offered to get elderly people in Bognor Regis on their feet.

Dodie has begun to stage free dancing sessions in care homes around the town and would like to know if more of them feel their residents would benefit from the light-hearted activity.

She said: "I've been into my first home and the residents absolutely loved it.

"About four of them got up and joined me. The others tapped their feet and were moving from side to side and were clapping their hands.

"It's all about getting them moving and many of them were also singing along to the music. My husband, Don, comes with me and plays songs by singers like Max Bygraves and a lot of piano music.

"As well as the residents, I enjoyed it as well. The home have invited me back but we haven't decided on a date yet."

Felpham pensioner Dodie has been dancing all her life. She first went to dance school in Yorkshire and continued at the International School of Stage Dancing her family returned to southern England.

She concentrated on ballet dancing, with some tap dancing as well, and carried on until she married Don 52 years ago and had a child.

After a while, Don encouraged her to start teaching again.

"I didn't want to teach ballet because it is so precise," she said. "I wanted something for fun and I started doing tap dancing. I love the rhythm of tap

dancing. I have professional tap dancing shoes and they make a lovely sound.

"With tap dancing, there is a lot of ankle movement and you are using every bit of your foot and twisting your ankles."

Dodie taught adult classes around south east England before she and Don moved overseas.

"We lived in Spain and I taught children of all nationalities at many of the international schools on the Costa del Sol. That was the most wonderful experience," she said.

Her pupils included the two daughters of former England footballer and manager Kevin Keegan.

She and Don lived in Spain for 20 years and returned to the UK to live in Crawley for five years. They moved to the Roundle Estate just over five years ago.

Keen cruise goers, she has hosted some dancing sessions afloat and recently met Shirley Jones, star of hit musicals Carousel and Oklahoma, during one of their holidays.

"The classes are absolutely fantastic," said Jodie. "I've had emails from people telling me they were the best thing about the ship.

"But, between the cruises, I am doing nothing and this is why I've offered to go into rest and care homes. The sessions last about an hour.

"It's not about doing anything serious.

It's all about having a bit of fun."

Girl players set for debut GIRL footballers in Bognor Regis are getting ready for their first season.

The young members of the town’s football club were among the groups at the revived Bersted Parish Festival.

The girls are gearing up to make their debuts in four teams in next season’s Sussex Women’s and Girls’ League.

One of the players, Chelsy Osborne, 11, a goalkeeper and forward, said: “My brother taught me a lot of my skills. He was a scholar at Portsmouth for three years and is set to play for Basingstoke.

“I want to follow in his footsteps. I want to let all the girls out there to know that football is a fun sport to play. When I started to play football, I made new friends and it’s for the fun of the game. It’s not just about winning or losing.”

The girls’ registration secretary, Gemma Williams, said: “We train here from 10am-midday on Saturdays. We started last November and we have 86 girls aged from six to 16. This is only the second community event we have attended and it is the first time Bognor Football Club has had a girls team for 12 years.”

Sunday’s event marked the revival of the parish festival by Bersted Parish Council after a year’s absence.

It featured some 30 stalls around the Jubilee Playing Fields, a small number indoors and a day-long line-up of performers on a stage. They included the TS Montrose Band, the Sussex Steel Band and the Oakville Pete Country Band.

2351 Squadron Bognor Regis Air Cadets staged a Second World War checkpoint with a two-thirds scale Spitfire.

Its commanding officer, Flight Sergeant Nick Moran, said: “This is about showing people we are not just recruiting for the armed forces.”

Cadet Hamish ‘Bear’ Dominick, 16, said: “I wanted to be an engineer in the RAF but I’m thinking I want to go into motorsport.

“This is not like a youth club. It’s more like a family because everyone looks after each other. Going to the cadets is one of the highlights of my week. We get to do a lot of different activities.”

A selection of classic and military vehicles included a 1985 Lotus Esprit Series 3 in eye-catching Norfolk Mustard owned by Felpham resident John Brandhuber, 68.

He said: “I used to own a tank but that was getting quite hard to drive and so I bought the Lotus instead. It’s much more luxurious. It’s a beautiful car and I lot of people like looking at it.”

Parish council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said the event had benefited from stunning weather but had failed to attract the estimated 3,000 people who went along in 2016.

“We have had not had the crowds through that we anticipated. The numbers have not matched the effort which the council has put into the event. We’ve got a wide range of stalls and good entertainment. It will be for councillors to decide if we hold another fete next year.”

PRIMARY school children in West Sussex have achieved significant improvements in their Key Stage 2 standard assessment tests (SATs) for the second year in a row.

Provisional results show 61.3 per cent of the county's 11-year-olds met or exceeded the expected standard in reading, writing and maths. This was up from 55 per cent last year.

It means West Sussex has greatly closed the gap on the 64 per cent national average. The improvement was seen across all subjects.

Key Stage 1 tests also showed a similar success story.

Cllr Richard Burrett, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for education and skills, said: "Over the past two years, there has been a big focus on raising standards in writing and mathematics specifically, and the figures reflect all of the hard work that has been carried out."

ENERGETIC women from Bognor Regis and Chichester walked through Southampton city centre last Saturday for a pensions rally.

The members from the area's branch of Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) joined more than 25 from around Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire for the lively march to campaign for better pensions treatment for women born in the 1950s.

One of those taking part, Jill Robertson, said: "Many members of the Southampton public stopped to speak to the groups."

College's successes are led by Stanley MATHS-MINDED Stanley Hards has achieved a college's best performance in a national maths contest.

Stanley Hards was awarded a merit in the category for the top three per cent of more than 300,000 entrants in the junior category of the UK Maths Challenge 2018.

His success was the first time a Felpham Community College student had been awarded the brain-testing status in the challenge's Kangaroo section as well as a gold medal in the overall junior class.

Kim Weston, a teacher of maths at the college, said: "For the first time, we have achieved a merit at Kangeroo. So, a special congratulations goes to Stanley Hards."

The junior challenge is for college students in Years 7 and 8. As well as Stanley, Yasmin Srikanthapalan-Bennett and Cian Tongue achieved a gold medal and qualified for the Kangaroo.

A statement on the competition's website says some 8,000 students out of the total number of entries this year were invited to take part in the Kangaroo section.

Of the college's entries, Michael Collins achieved the best grade in Year 7 and a gold medal. This pushed the college's junior tally to four gold awards, eight silver and 16 bronze.

The intermediate maths challenge for Years 9, 10 and 11. Sam Riseborough, in Year 11, achieved the college's best grade after he was selected for the Kangaroo section along with Edward Reeder. Joyce

Chapman, in Year 9, also qualified for the Kangaroo. In Year 10, Lukas Skirmantas was successful with the college's best grade among its three gold awards, 11 silver and 15 bronze.

The senior challenge for Years 12 and 13 saw Sammy Tarafdar achieving best grade for the college in Year 13 and Owen Mawbey in Year 12. The college's medal tally among the senior students was six silver and 13 bronze.

Ms Weston said: "Well done to everyone who took part. As a school, we did really well."

More than 200 students in the college took part in this year's competition.

Those who were awarded certificates for their abilities were invited to a tea party.

Superhero stories written by present and future Felpham Community College pupils were put on show at its latest summer arts evening last week.

The college's Year 7 students joined with pupils in their final year at primary schools to spend three days planning, creating and developing a literacy project based on a superhero theme.

The younger children came from Downview, Bishop Tufnell, Southway and South Bersted schools.

The results of their literacy initiative formed one of the evening's displays.

An assistant headteacher at the college, Lucie Szymura, said: "We try and work with local primary schools as much as possible. As well as all the initiatives and events run through Felpham and Bognor

Heads, our college runs Year 5 magic days and Year 6 welcome days.

"The aim of these are to help students see how secondary school is different from primary learning and also to develop their skills across curriculum areas.2 Stephen Castle, an English teacher, said: "These additional workshops were a chance for students to work across year groups to develop their creative writing and the results we have seen have been excellent."

The college's 2018 summer ball for Year 11 students saw them arrive in spectacular style and walk the red carpet, pictured below. The hall was transformed for the evening with a stunning Night at the Oscars theme. Nathan Thompson and Katie Elston were crowned the Prom King and Prom Queen.

Arts are at heart of college KING GEORGE the Fourth was the inspiration for Jessica Bulpett-Caynes' display at Felpham Community College's summer arts evening.

Jessica's artwork of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, built by the monarch, was among the dozens of pieces on display for the event.

She said her creativity had come from a visit to the extravagantly designed and furnished building as part of her GCSE textile art and design course with reference to the work of professional artist Wendy Dolan.

"We were looking at the form of the building and the colours that are in its

exterior. It was about taking note of the different shapes and the symmetry," said Jessica, 15.

"I like textile art and design because you can express yourself and there's no correct answer. It's about what you want to do but you obviously have to follow the guidelines of the course."

As well as textiles, 3D design, graphic communication, music and studies of inspirational architecture were also on display last Thursday evening.

Students had the chance as well to take part in life drawing classes by studying three chickens happily pecking the grass at the college's

entrance. The library saw readings of classic books by groups of students.

The event marked a first public performance by pianist/singer Riannon Lock, 13. She sung Lost Boy by Ruth B in the school hall.

Riannon, who hopes to study GCSE music, said: "It was really nervewracking but now I really want to do it again.

"I'm a self-taught pianist. I listen to songs and try to work them out.

"Some songs are inspirational and other songs you can relate to. I like the sound of music as well."

Michelle Kelly, an assistant

headteacher at the college, said it was important to promote the students' creative abilities.

"This evening is in celebration of our talented students and it's a wonderful way of welcoming the summer.

"The arts have always been important at this college regardless of the changing education landscape," she said. "The way education is going, there is a risk the arts are being marginalised.

Yet the arts are what make us human.

"We are celebrating that creativity.

That creativity is what stretches our mind and body and has an impact on the rest of our lives."

` Help for helpline A FINANCIAL agency in Chichester is urging older people not to suffer in silence with loneliness this summer.

The city's outlet of the Yorkshire Building Society is promoting The Silver Line charity.

This was launched by Dame Esther Rantzen in 2012 and operates a free helpline to address isolation among people aged 55 and over. It also signposts people to support services in their area and tackles issues like abuse and neglect.

Some of the society's colleagues form part of the network of Silver Line Friends across the UK who make weekly calls to older people have contacted the charity.

Chris Nicolaou, who owns the agency, said: "As people get older, they can find it increasingly hard to get out and meet new friends while at the same time having to cope with upheavals such as bereavement and ill-health.

"The feedback we get from both colleagues who volunteer their time as Silver Line Friends and beneficiaries of the scheme is amazing."

Finding an inner strength to pull through hard times WHAT an amazing week! I am in New York City with my daughter who is lucky enough to be completing her sixth form work experience in one of the most prestigious businesses in the city in Madison Avenue.

My family and I have visited NYC a couple of times before, but only really as 'tourists'. This time we are both working here and staying with family friends in Lower East Side. Staying with locals makes it a whole different experience, and we are absolutely loving every second.

This morning I ran with some friends across Brooklyn Bridge, which has breathtaking views over the water and the sky line. Its scorchio (33 degrees at 8am) and being in the city, feels very humid, which is not boding well with the hair! It's

getting puffier by the second!

Whether or not we are just lucky, and happen to be meeting the right people, I am not sure. I have heard many things over the years about New Yorkers being loud and brash, but our experience has been very different. What I love about them is their overwhelming warmth. They will invite you into their homes and make you feel like part of the family at the drop of a hat. Everyone speaks on the subway, and quite frankly us Brits could learn a thing or two from them about customer service!

The city bikes are easily accessible (much like London) which allows you to cycle everywhere without too much danger. That is the means of transport that we have liked the best, and honestly, when they hear a British accent they cannot do enough for us. We have received free drinks and food regularly just because they love our accents.

The spirit and strength that I have felt from each and everyone I have met when talking about their city is quite remarkable. They are proud of what they are and have no shame in telling you how much they adore their city.

The community spirit is amazing, and we have felt it particularly, because the friend that we are staying with lost her husband this time last year, which has been utterly devastating for them all. He was just 52 years old and had had throat surgery a few month prior to his death. What happened to him was very rare indeed, because the doctors didn't pick up any problems at all even a week before he died, but an artery in his throat was damaged and burst.

However, the outpouring of love they received from their community has been incredible. They received food every day on their doorstep for four months after he died. Neighbours set up a charity

for college funds for both his children and they are endlessly fundraising for him and his family each month. In a time of crisis, that is all we need right?

Love and support and to feel like you belong in your community?

Last night I was invited to speak at an event in NYC, that was organised by a company called 30 Second Pitch. Again another remarkable experience full of positive and uplifting people. Basically this company has created an app, and you download the app and then pitch your business idea in 30 seconds. If they like what you have to say and think it's worth investigating as a true business idea, then you will get a message back, and meetings will be set up to discuss further. Its a bit like our UK's Dragons Den where they will invest if they think there is potential.

Its a genius idea, because it gives everyone a chance. So many people have great ideas, but don't know how to go to the next step of growing the business, or perhaps don't have the finances to take it to the next stage. The other thing that this company supports greatly is women in business.

Having been there myself, I know just how frightening it can feel to have full responsibility of everything

that goes on from taking out the bins, mowing the lawn, earning enough money to pay all the bills and freeing up cash for the luxuries too. But behind every heartache, is a gift of learning, and the gift for me was finding a strength that I just didn't know existed.

There are a huge number of studies now to say that children raised by single parents, be it the mum or the dad, are just as successful, if not more than their peers, because they experience the hardships and the success in early life.

I think when your life gets turned upside down, and your family no longer exists as it once was, a fire ignites in your belly that fuels determination and focus. Suddenly your children are relying on you to put food on the table and clothes on their backs.

This is a situation where you can surrender to a life of 'getting by', or as many women (and men of course) have proved that they want so much more for their families. It's when you really have no choice, and have to pull out all the stops to make things work, that your inner strength comes from nowhere.

It can actually be extremely empowering. There are hundreds of successful women all over the UK, that have turned a creative idea, or a business opportunity into something really successful.

So, if you find yourself in a difficult situation, and want to improve your life, dig deep, go with your passion, something that you love to do, and create the life you have always dreamed of. It may not be easy, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Step out of your comfort zone and do something extraordinary.

Don't just dream it, live it.

A CHANCE encounter this week in East Street, Chichester, as I happened upon Eddie McGee of Le Mistral Wine Company, which enabled me to sample some excellent rosés and a rather splendid Côtes de Provence which proved to be a fitting precursor to the Comtesse de Saint Martin (a fine name indeed ) 2014 Cru Classé which used its old vines to optimum effect and fully justified a £35 price tag!

My final purchase was that of a 2012 La Fourgeasse Nuits-Saint-Georges Jean Groubier for circa £42 which sported a most intoxicating nose, had an intense crespucular colour and proved to be subtle, silky and rich with hints of rose, liquorice, leather and truffle with a

velvety feel and a length en bouche - a wine to tickle all ivories!

The last wine came from the Jean Groubier Collection and Eddie invited me to the Festival of Speed on Friday to sample white and red burgundies and I accepted with due alacrity!

Sampling fine wine with the Red Arrows overhead and uninterrupted blue sky is rather special and the effervescent Franck Timmermans was able to wax lyrical about the wines in his native tongue, although his English was rather impressive indeed!

Eddie is a most convivial host and I first tasted a 2017 Mâcon-Fuissé Montgivray priced at £27.10.

Quel délice - this wine proved to be very well balanced, decidedly fruity and refreshing and would be an ideal apéritif to get your juices flowing so to speak!

Next, we sampled a 2015 Chablis Monticelles and, cognisant that this is a super vintage, was delighted by its cleanliness on the palate, sheer elegance and traditional old-style Chablis character.

Priced at £35.30, this delightful throwback had a certain finesse! Next the Pouilly Fuissé 2016 Les Eglisottes

was pleasingly old-style oozing subtle creaminess and being wonderfully balanced on sale for £43.40.

But the outstanding white on offer was that of a 2015 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny at the lofty price of just £125.30.

Sublime is the only possible description for this gem produced from deep rich soils with limestone and pebbles aplenty.

This wine has such intensity, complexity and elegance which defies belief that such a wine could be made

from mere grapes!

A veritable panoply of flavours to regale any palate, rather yummy in fact! I have concentrated on the whites principally because most of the reds require cellaring, but the 2015 Santenay Vieilles Vignes, priced at £43.10, proved to be a crowd pleaser.

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis, priced

at £79.10, shows great promise, but it was the Vosne Romanée 2014 1er Cru Les Rouges du Dessus which caught my eye - velvet smoothness and a perfect example of great Pinot Noir.

Rather a pleasant tasting and a new adage comes to mind - it is well worth venturing out as you never know whom you might meet - Merci Eddie et Franck!

Community News & Views DANCE class organiser Liz Chisnall, pictured below, has scooped an award for her business success.

Liz has shown her business acumen is matched by her dancing skills to become the holder of the diddi developer award from the founder of the pre-school dance classes.

Professional dancer Anne-Marie Martin founded the business more than nine years ago and has classes in 40-plus locations around the UK. She praised the efforts Liz had put into taking over a previously owned territory a year ago and growing it by increasing its numbers, turnover and social media following.

"Liz has some of the most amazing statistics I've ever seen in a franchisee buying and taking over a current franchise. Her determination and drive has seen tangible results and she is a very deserving winner," she said.

Liz, who lives in the area, was attracted to run diddi dance classes in south east Hampshire and Chichesrer after she had attended some with her children.

Diddi dance is said to be unique in teaching children a wide range of dance styles such as salsa, hip hop and jive. It also promotes school readiness, balance and co-ordination as well as fun.

"I'm so proud to win this award from our national conference," said Liz. "It's been a busy year in business for me opening six new community dance classes for parents to carers to bring their little ones along to.

"As well as expanding our network of full of fun pre-school dance classes, we've also had the privilege of working with lots of new pre-school settings this year."

As well as the award, diddi dance south east Hampshire and Chichester also worked hard to receive its silver accreditation from the Children's Activities Association.

The two-day diddi dance conference takes place annually.

IMPORTANT information was given to Donnington Gardening Club members about the need to stay ahead of scams.

Those who attended the club's latest monthly meeting heard all about the tricks of conmen and women.

Police Community Support Officer Richard Moorey, of Sussex Police's prevention team based in Chichester, was guest speaker - and he provided plenty of interest for those present to think about.

Lawrence Holloway, the club's press officer, said: "He described in detail all the current scams, both on computers and telephones, and also involving doorstep callers and postal deliveries. He emphasised that, if people do have the misfortune to be taken in by one of these scams, it is important not to feel foolish or stupid and keep it to themselves but to report the matter to their local police straight away.

"It is vital not to be persuaded into any kind of conversation with any callers on the phone, nor at the door. Under no circumstances, should any personal details be given - put the phone down or close the door at once."

Any unexpected email or attachment should be deleted without being opened, he added, and any doubts about the identity of a police officer should be checked.

The club's next meeting is at 7.30pm, on August 3, at Donnington Parish Hall. Margaret Williams will be talking about Cookery and Preserves.

OVER 300 guests attended a special fundraiser in aid of St Wilfrid's Hospice last month.

Looking out to Boxgrove Priory, it was the perfect setting for a Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed gala and thanks to the creative genius of gala committee member, Clare Mansell and the fabulous Abi at Albert and Arthur, the marquees were transported into a magical woodland wonderland.

While guests soaked up the atmosphere, Chichester Festival Youth Theatre performed a medley of songs from favourite CFT musicals.

Then, as guests enjoyed a three-course meal at their real grass centred tables, surrounded by silver birches, London Essentials broke into song and began serenading guests at their tables. A lucky few were even involved in the performance of this charmingly British quintet.

An animated Live Auction then ensued, where the top lot – a maquette of Le Astuzie Femminili by Philip Jackson, CVO sold for £10,000.

While some guests took to the dance floor, others were busy perusing items they

could bid for online in the silent auction. Everything from weekend breaks, specialist spa treatments, fitness passes and artwork were up for grabs, including a few outstanding items which got the crowd buzzing with anticipation as the deadline for bids loomed.

Co-chair of the gala ball committee, Jo Kroes Randell, said: “The event was a triumph and raised over £100,000 towards the Dreambuilding appeal.

"On behalf of everyone at the hospice, I would like to say thank you to all of the incredible people involved in delivering this fantastic event; from the gala committee members, to the generous sponsors, donors and to the guests themselves. Everyone had one aim in mind, to help St Wilfrid’s raise as much money as possible for its new hospice.”

St Wilfrid’s recently completed the steel frame of its new hospice in Walton Lane, Bosham. It plans to complete construction at the start of 2019 and open the doors to its first patient during spring 2019.

ALICE in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll will be the subject of a day of talks hosted by the University of Chichester.

Carroll and Scottish novelist George MacDonald, who wrote The Light Princess and The Princess and Curdle, met at Hastings in East Sussex.

The two Victorian writers, pictured above, still influence fantasy and children's writing.

The event about them is taking place from 9.30am6pm on September 1 at the

Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales and Fantasy at the university's Chichester campus. It will provide a forum for scholars to study mythology and other traditional stories.

Mark Richards, who has chaired the Lewis Carroll Society, said the day would bring together the authors' shared views about subjects like maths, dreams and heaven and hell.

THOUSANDS of pounds to benefit Felpham are expected to have been made by its annual fun in the sun.

A large crowd made the latest summer fair to be held by the Felpham Village Conservation Society another success.

The event packed Old Rectory Gardens with some 20 stalls, a series of games and a succession of live entertainment.

Glenn Powell, the society's vice-chairman, said: "You can't get better than being in Felpham in the sunshine on an afternoon like this. It's a lovely community event. It's not meant to be a full-scale commercial event.

"This is our fourth year and we've got another good turnout.

All the money we make will go back to Felpham.

"We've provided hanging baskets and benches as well as improving the St Michael's allotments. We are now looking at some longer-term projects."

Among the groups with a stall at last Saturday's event was Felpham Art Group. Publicity officer Lin Biffen and member Heidi Walmsley, pictured below, were present along with some 50 artworks.

Lin said: "We have got all different types of subjects on show

to please everyone. A lot of people are interested in the seaside because of our location and this is a showcase for the works we have made.

"It's always good to have people looking at what we have created. When you sell a picture, it is very pleasing because it means someone likes it enough to hang it on their wall."

The stall also promoted the art group's Sunday summer seafront shows which began on Sunday and will be held every other week near Blakes Road until the end of August.

The Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur charity was also present. One of its volunteers, Gabrielle Tappin, said: "This will get our name out to a lot of people who might want to volunteer with us. I've been a volunteer for seven years and the families we visit really appreciate us going in for two hours once a week for between three to six months.

Store is a sign of changing times of shopping Different occupiers have used premises EACH week we talk about things, places buildings etc., this time I thought I would talk more about a shop. I am talking about Bobby’s, so I thought I would look at its history through to its merger with Reynold’s.

Today, this property is Bon Marche’ If you walked past the High Street entrance to Bobby’s you would have seen the word 'Staley’s' inscribed with tiles on the entrance floor, this was the first clue to the long history involved. At the start of the 19th century, there was a small shop in the High Street, namely George W. Staley, who was, in fact, a general draper, milliner and ladies outfitter.

This shop opened in 1888 and the business was conducted by George Staley himself for 45 years. Their advertisements extolled the virtue of their shop with comments like 'largest selection of readymade costumes in Bognor'.

GW Staley was a great believer in advertising and also advising his customers of the way to gain the best wear out of products purchased from him. For example, in 1908, he advised his customers that “blankets woven in pairs wear chiefly at the ends and middle. Sew the ends lightly together like a roller towel, then fold at the top can be constantly changed and the blankets will wear equally all over.” Thank goodness for duvets!

Staley’s was also one of the main shops in the town that was able to supply gowns for many of the local events. One advertisement in 1923 announced that a black chiffon velvet gown had been reduced from 8 guineas (£8.40) to 4 guineas (£4.20) and also they had reductions in the price of taffeta frocks.

All the terminology of this particular shop definitely comes from a different era. Can you imagine an advertisement today saying 'The extraordinary bargain quality of these offers makes an early personal visit advisable'?

Originally housed at No 25 High Street, Staley’s was to expand and move across the road to occupy the newly built premises on the corner of London Road, ie Nos 1 and 2, which opened on March 5, 1914, at the site we know today as Bon Marche.

There were many developments around the town at this time. For example, this corner site had formerly been occupied by Camden House for many years. It was a tea-place which was apparently greatly enjoyed by visitors to the town and for numerous children it was used for their Sunday-school treats.

Eventually ‘progress' arrived. The house was demolished and a new series of shops was constructed. The sales particulars advised prospective purchasers that these premises were to be numbered 1,3,5,7, and 9 which then

meant London Road had to be renumbered.

This is then a warning to those people trying to carry out research, numbers do change!

If you take the time to look above the shop fronts at this particular corner in Bognor you can see the evidence that they were built as a group, by the distinctive look of their roof line, which has not changed over the years.

Eventually, in 1959, a major change was to take place. The Staley family sold their shop to a new owner, Mr F. J. Bobby, who at the time was running a fashion shop in Tunbridge Wells. He received a phone call from a friend in Bognor Regis advising Staley’s shop was for sale. F. J. Bobby was, in fact, the grandson of the founder of the Bobby Group, which during the 1950s was part of the Debenhams Group.

After a closure of six months, the newly named store was opened in June, 1959, and named F. J. Bobby (Bognor) Ltd. This store was then to continue in the traditions of the previous owners with the aim of 'serving the residents of Bognor Regis'.

Many people have told me that one of their specific memories of this store was the overhead canisters which were used to propel your money to the cashier, which would then be returned, overhead, with your receipt and change.

By the end of the 1970s, there was an amount of modernisation taking place, which included a new staircase at the rear, after the removal of a large chimney stack.

While various events were taking place with these two stores, another store was also making its own history in the town - Reynolds, a well-loved and long established store which was originally opened in 1867 in West Street.

By 1870, business had increased and the company expanded into the High Street, where it remains today. By 1888, Reynolds was to have new neighbours at No 25 High Street - GW Staley’s.

Reynolds’ first store displayed a sign stating that they were 'Auctioneers, Appraisers, House Agents, Cabinet Makers, Upholsters and Undertakers'.

In those early days, Reynolds offered a very comprehensive range of goods, including curtains, furniture repairs, polishing, a bedding department, linoleum, and, of course, their funeral services. They have continued through the years to provide a 'courteous service to the customer', in a very changeable environment.

As we sat and listened to plans in 2001 that were being made for major changes that were taking place in our town centre, it was interesting to surmise how the original families of Reynolds and their neighbours Staley’s would have viewed today’s amalgamation of these established businesses in the town.

With the changing shopping trends of shoppers, it is pleasing to see that the standards and aims of a bygone era will remain in the town centre, rather than moving to one of the modern out of town shopping complexes.

It was interesting to watch the progress made over the months, sadly this did not continue. We next heard that Seasons was up for sale and was soon to be opened by Bon Marche’, which is still with us today.

The 'Staley's' have been on display in the Bognor Regis Local History Museum in West Street, which is open daily (except Monday).

2018 Country Fair Volunteer – Hotham Park Heritage Trust

The Hotham Park Heritage Trust aims to promote, for the benefit of the community, the conservation, protection and improvement of Hotham Park and to raise funds to achieve this. Volunteers are needed to help on 4th and 5th August at the Country Fair. Duties will include bucket collection and park marshalling. Applicants should be physically active, as this role involves standing and walking so plenty of stamina. Should have good front line customer service skills as the role involves engaging members of the Public. They would like people who can commit for 5 hours or longer per day.

City Angel Volunteer (Chichester) – City Angels

City Angels aim to bring a calming presence to the city streets and help anyone in need. They are 66 volunteers, mainly from local churches, who walk around the city centre streets in teams of 6-8 every Friday and the first and last Saturdays of each month, from around 10pm - 2am or later. City Angels carry rucksacks with basic first aid kits; water bottles; a dustpan and brush to sweep up broken glass etc; flip flops to give out to protect bare feet from glass on the streets; and wet wipes to help clean up anyone who may have been sick. City Angels carry radios enabling communication with each other and with police and door security staff. They offer free hot drinks from a mobile coffee van, and generally assist anyone in need, in whatever way they can. City Angels volunteers also attend St Richards Accident and Emergency department, to support those in the waiting area.

Home Visiting Volunteer – Home-Start Chichester & District

Home-start volunteers visit families with at least one child under-five, and offer support to families facing a wide range of issues, such as loneliness and isolation, ill health, depression, bereavement, relationship difficulties, multiple births, special needs, first time parenthood, domestic violence or disability. Visits take place weekly in the family’s own home. Volunteers are someone the family can talk too confidentially; they can play with the children or introduce ideas for activities. A volunteer could be ‘an extra pair of hands’ in everyday situations or accompany on outings to the park, library or toddler group. Volunteers can also give information on services and offer reassurance and understanding that bringing up children can be difficult.

Minute Taker – Dementia Support

Dementia Support is a new local charity working in partnership with voluntary and charitable organisations, the NHS, West Sussex County Council and other statutory organisations, to build a unique first-of-its-kind community centre for dementia. The new unique centre, The Dementia Hub, will truly enhance the well-being and quality of life for people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers. This key role will assist their work with efficient minute taking to enable them to continue to deliver a professional and supportive service. This role is for an individual who has experience of minute taking and will assist them by attending regular scheduled meetings.

Baseball proves to be a big hit with PostSport primary pupils across Chichester YOUNGSTERS across Chichester have been getting a taste of America's favourite sport thanks to Chichester Falcons.

The softball club have just completed their primary schools baseball programme which saw six players visiting 13 schools in the area.

Most of the schools had never encountered the game before, so it was a chance for children to get their hands on some real baseball gear for the first time.

The sessions were a real success and culminated in a six school tournament featuring more than 80 children at Oaklands Park. Plans are also afoot for the Falcons to run a weekly club for seven to 11-year-olds, which starts this Sunday.

Falcons manager David Morris said: "The standard of the baseball and the enthusiasm of the players has shown that there is huge potential for youth baseball in Chichester.

“We’ve made some important friends in the school sector whilst delivering this programme, and we’ve seen a lot of local children put on a baseball glove for the first time and become hooked."

The tournament featured pupils from Central, Parklands, Funtington, Jessie

Younghusband, Kingsham and West Dean schools laying across two fields at Oaklands Park.

A round robin phase sorted the teams into pairs for a gold, silver and bronze final, with Parklands running away with bronze, Kingsham sealing silver and West Dean taking gold at the end of the day.

The sight of over 80 children on the ball-field drew considerable attention from onlookers who were treated to a fine display of hitting and fielding, as Falcons staff umpired and managed the dugouts, assisted by Under-13 GB coach Jodie Rushin.

The winning teams of each final were presented with baseball medals, male and female most valued persons were given Falcons caps, while West Dean took away a trophy for their cabinet.

Two of those schools - Kingsham and West Dean - now have a weekly baseball club.

A number of youngsters are also expected to come along to the weekly Falcons cub, which will consist of 8 Sunday sessions at Oaklands Park.

Goodwood to host Running Grand Prix

RACING of a different type will hit the worldfamous Goodwood motor circuit this autumn when a running event for all abilities returns.

The Running Grand Prix heads to the world famous rack on September 16 with the aim of opening up running to all.

Organisers say the event, which will take place on the same route that has been used

by Sir Stirling Moss, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, that there is a distance to suit everyone from beginner to seasoned marathon runner.

With 5k, 10k, half marathon, 20 mile or a marathon on offer, there is a chance for people of all ages to get their trainers on.

All of the events take place at the same time, with the race being seen as an excellent training event for those heading towards an autumn marathon!

It is also flat, which means that quick times are possible.

A statement from the organisers at the Running Grand Prix team said: "Goodwood

Motor Circuit is an incredible venue and offers an exciting and unique opportunity to quite literally race around to a new personal best. With marshals passionate about running and entertainment around each course as well as each mile marked out along the course we will keep you motivated all the way to the chequered flag finish.

"With every entry you will receive an official chip time, a unique themed medal, official finishers technical t-shirt, free official event photographs and other post race goodies."

The Running Grand Prix comes from the organisers of the Official Hampton Court Palace Half Marathon.

Other events include the Colchester Stampede 10k and Thorpe Half Marathon.

The company added the have years of experience delivering mass participation running events.

YOUTH SPORT: Planning is already underway for the 2019 Chichester Festival of Sport after more than 1,000 students from schools across the south visited the University of Chichester for the event.

Organised by the Institute of Sport, it provides Year 9 and 10 students (13 to 15-year-olds) with opportunities to participate in different sports such as trampolining, handball and tag rugby, learn about exercise and its effects on the body in various strength and stamina tests, and find out what courses are on offer at the university.

Professor Mike Lauder, director of the Institute of Sport, said: “The idea of the Festival of Sport is to provide almost a theme park around sport.

"The students from schools that attend the event are given an insight into what you could study in sport at university but very much through a fun approach.

“There’s lots of practical activities at the festival, be that playing sport or doing exercise, with some of the theory that underpins this taken into account.

We want the school students to have an enjoyable experience."

Alison Davis, who, with Amanda Godwin, was the festival’s key organiser, said: “We’ve got schools at the festival this year from Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and South London.

“For a lot of the young people they now teach, this is perhaps the first time that they’ve visited a university. The festival gives them a chance to get a feel of the university. Hopefully, it sows a seed that this is the sort of place they might want to go to in the future.”

BOWLS: Chichester A remain with an outside shot at winning the West Sussex Bowls Division One title - but they must defeat Southbourne on Tuesday (6pm) to keep up the pressure on the leaders.

The Priory Park side currently sit fourth but have games in hand on two of those clubs above them.

Chi's title hopes suffered a blow last week when they went down to a heavy defeat to league leaders Norfolk A, taking home just two points in the 87-67 loss.

Third-place Bognor A also suffered a defeat this week, picking up just four points in the 96-74 defeat to secondplace Worthing Pavilion A. In Division Two, Bognor B have a chance to pull themselves away from the relegation zone when they welcome Crablands to Waterloo Square (2pm).

SHORT MAT BOWLS: Four members of the Boxgrove-based Infinity club formed the core of a West Sussex team that came home with silverware from a national contest.

The quartet joined one player from Compton's in Horsham to travel to Whitchurch in Hampshire to play in the Eric Hill Open 5's tournament.

Infinity's Chris Page and Charlotte Rollings played in the pair, with Robin Armstrong, Denise Kirby and Compton's Dan Butler playing the Triple.

There were two groups of seven teams.

But the West Sussex team won all the games in their group to come home with the Plate. A team from Southampton won the overall cup.

DARTS: Tuesday, August 7, is the AGM for the Double-In Double-Out Darts League at 8pm at the Newtown Social Club.

Run as part of the successful Bognor Darts League, all returning teams are asked to contact the secretary in advance if they wish to enter for another year.

Selsey aim to move forward SELSEY boss Daren Pearce believes his side are moving in the right direction as they continue to get ship-shape for the new season.

The Blues boss has revamped the squad down at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium after taking charge in the close season.

With the SCFL Division One campaign less than a month away, Selsey have stepped up their preparations.

A decent crowd saw the Blues lose 4-1 to Bostik Premier side Worthing on Saturday before a 3-0 defeat to Wessex Premier side Portchester on Tuesday.

Pearce maintains that the club will be good to go come the first day of the season - and he says the only target is for the club to keep moving forward together.

Pearce, who joined Selsey club after he helped Sidlesham to promotion last term, said: "One of my main reasons for coming here was the welcome I had when I was a player. They want to push on a little bit and with me using the younger side of things they want to develop.

"I wouldn't like to say they have under-performed last season, that's none of my business. But the club wants

to push on and develop as a whole on and off the pitch "Dave [Lee] and Dicky [Istead] are very influential about the club and we have got a lot of ex-players who are still part of the club which says a lot."

Former Sidlesham boss Pearce swapped places with ex-Blues boss Steve Bailey after last season.

Sids have been busy rebuilding after promotion back to SCFL Division One and Bailey's task will be to guide the club to safety at step six level. * Pagham started pre-season with a 2-0 away win at SCFL Division One Steyning.

New signings George Gaskin and Lindon Miller grabbed the goals in what was a competitive and high-intensity run out.

Pagham followed that up with a match against Wessex Premier side Fareham on Tuesday before playing Bostik Premier side Lewes in a friendly last night.

The friendlies come thick and fast for the Lions with matches against Crowborough (H, tomorrow 3pm), Selsey (A, Tuesday, 7,45pm), Hamble (July 28, 3pm) and Whitehawk (July 31, 7.45pm) to come.

MIDDLETON CC will be looking to push on and end the season on a high after giving themselves breathing room from the drop.

Sean Heather's side produced a convincing display to beat second-bottom Hastings & St Leonards by six wickets.

The victory was Middleton's first in four and lifts the Sea Lane side up to fourth-bottom, in the Sussex Premier Division with a decent cushion to the relegation zone.

Heather's side will now look to build on that win when they travel to East Grinstead tomorrow (12pm).

With the hosts not winning in three, Middleton will want to use a good team performance as a springboard to push them on in their remaining seven matches.

The victory against Hastings was built on an excellent bowling display - with Craig Fowle (5-42) and Matthew Reynolds (5-58) both taking five-wicket hauls after the visitors scored 39 without loss.

In reply, the batting charge was led by a very composed innings by Jack Dawling (46*), who was ably supported by Mahesh Rawat (40) and Patrick Colvin (23*), in getting his side home.

Derby day for Chi and Bognor

CHICHESTER Priory Park and Bognor Regis enter derby day in contrasting spirits as the sides meet in a crunch Division One match tomorrow (12.30pm).

Chi travel to the Regis Oval off the back of a convincing seven wicket win over relegationthreatened Bexhill.

But the hosts have less to cheer as they continued their poor form, losing by 69 runs at league leaders Mayfield, which means they are without a win in five.

With Bognor now sitting just above the drop zone, it is Ryan Maskell's side who perhaps

need the win more than their city rivals.

The hosts have improved in recent weeks but have just not been able to break a losing run.

Last weekend, a composed bowling display restricted Mayfield to just 180 for 7 as Josh Sargeant (3-43) and Jamie Woolnough (3-54) bowled with real restraint to limit the hosts.

But, as has been the case this season, Bognor were unable to follow up with the bat.

Maskell's side were at risk of being completely embarrassed after being reduced to 69-8 with Mickey Harris top-scoring with

Stuart Hanks' side host West Chiltington & Thakeham tomorrow (12.30pm) looking to rediscover their stellar form of late which has lifted them up to mid-table security.

Any hopes of pushing on were dashed though by Roffey, who, batting first, mounted a big score of 322-8. Rico Webb (4-66) was the pick of the Pagham bowlers.

In reply, Hanks' side put up a good fight despite losing two quick wickets. Ryan Barratt (86 off 50 balls) was the pick with Justin Scott (50 off 34) following up with a hard-hitting half century.

But the total of 279 all out saw Pagham fall 43 runs short.

Chi City shaping up well for new season CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford will be delighted with his side's pre-season preparations after they smashed 16 past preseason opponents Wick.

The SCFL Premier side had an excellent 2017/18 season with a sixth-placed finish in the league, a cup win and reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time.

Rutherford is looking to keep the momentum going on the pitch but he has some key positions to fill.

Scott Murfin and Harry Williams have departed to Pagham while influential goalkeeper Ant Ender has moved on.

But Rutherford is looking to rebuild, with play-making number 10 Tiago Andrade (Broadbridge Heath) and Terrell Lewis

(Pagham) among his additions.

Chi showed they are bedding down quickly with a 16-0 victory on Saturday against SCFL Division One side Wick. The club were quick to downplay the result though, posting on Twitter afterwards: "Remember, pre-season is about development and not results."

Chi followed that up on Tuesday with an excellent 3-2 victory over Bostik Premier side Worthing at Oaklands Park.

Young guns give Rocks hope as pre-season prep steps up Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has plenty to work with as the Rocks got their pre-season preparations underway in style.

With the Bostik Premier season less than a month away, officials at Nyewood Lane are working overtime to make sure the squad are ready for their return to step three.

Rocks fans will be pleased with what they have seen so far, as a young team full of familiar names and a number of fresh faces defeated Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s 2-1 in a home friendly on Tuesday.

With matches against Wessex Premier side Horndean tonight and - perhaps more invitingly for supporters - League One Portsmouth to come on Tuesday (both 7.45pm), there's lots to be positive about for Bognor as the countdown to opening day is three weeks away.

Goals from Doug Tuck and teenage forward Jack Parkinson sealed victory for Pearce's side on Tuesday night after Jordan Maguire-Drew had given the visitors the lead. But it was the overall performance against a team of youth internationals that will compete at the top level of age-level English football that would have given the Rocks manager the biggest pleasure.

Included in the Bognor starting line up was 20-year-old midfielder Marley Ridge, who has signed for the Rocks on loan from National League Havant & Waterlooville.

A number of other young trialists, some of them from the Chichester College football

academy, were also included.

And it was one of these - Parkinson - who showed the biggest promise, popping up to pounce for a late winner.

At the other end of the pitch, there was also a boost as Dan Lincoln played in goal, giving hope that the Berkshire-based stopped could commit to the club for another season.

The emergence of youth is a boost, particularly as the Rocks have an extra space in their squad after the departure of veteran midfielder Dan Beck.

The combative 34-year-old had been expected to return to Nyewood Lane for the new campaign. But Beck announced this week he had decided to play his football for Bostik Premier rivals Burgess Hill Town, with whom he had a spell back in 2008/9.

A club spokesman said: "We would like to thank Dan for his contribution to the club and wish him every success for the future."

Pearce will continue to assess a number of trialists at the remaining pre-season fixtures.

The desire to strengthen up front is not a secret and he maintains there are 'a few irons in the fire'. The aim will be to have a core of the side together in time for the opening day trip to Haringey Borough on August 11.

The Rocks also have a few off-the-field matters to deal with, like a request from Worthing who want to switch their home match with Bognor to a Saturday from Tuesday, October 23.

Rocks road trip to kick off year THE ROCKS will venture into new territory when they kick off their Bostik Premier season.

The fixture computer has ensured Bognor will make the trip to north London to play Haringey Borough on the opening day of the season. Rocks fans will not have to wait long for the first home match of the season, though with Merstham visiting on August 14.

The Bognor faithful will soon have one of eight Sussex derbies to look forward to. On August bank holiday Monday, the Rocks will travel to Lewes. The festive period will also throw up some tasty fixtures, with the return home match against Lewes on Boxing Day before a new year's day trip to Whitehawk.

Rocks fans looking forward to a reunion with Darren Budd, James, Crane, Ollie Pearce and Alex Parsons may be disappointed though as the trip to Worthing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23. The return fixture is on March 2.

Bognor's longest trip of the season comes in late November when they head to the Essex coast to play Brightlingsea Regent on the 23rd.
