Workers 'treated as slaves' EASTERN Europeans are being subjected to slavery around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

THe head of a charity for homeless people in the area made the claim to councillors as she described its work.

Stonepillow’s chief executive, Hilary Bartle, said an influx of workers from other EU countries was one of the reasons for a surge in the number of homeless people who could be seen.

“We have worked with people who have been brought over here for jobs.

THeir passports have been taken off them,” she said.

“THey are then let go but they don’t have their passports given back to them.

THat’s classed as modern slavery.

“THat is one set of issues we are seeing quite regularly. I am about to meet with the police and crime commissioner to talk about that because that is an issue

she is trying to address. Another thing is that people who come over here do not realise some of the work is seasonal.”

Mrs Bartle said Stonepillow was unable to help Eastern Europeans who lacked passports. Without being able to show their nationality, they were stopped from applying for state benefits. THey could only be referred to other agencies.

“THey are caught in limbo. THey have not got the resources to return home

and they have not got the paperwork to remain. So there are some key issues we need to look at,” she said.

Some unscrupulous employers were also putting the overseas workers up in substandard housing or failing to tell them their work was seasonal.

f Radio Respect on air during its re-launch

Radio station set to expand again BOOMING Radio Respect is seeking its second move in Bognor Regis in just six months.

THe radio station hopes to expand into larger premises in Belmont Street this autumn to provide twice as much shopfloor space than its current base.

Founder Chris Collins said: "We need to move to bigger premises. We need to raise funds for a month's rent as a deposit and three months' rent in advance.

"But where we want to go has a lot more rooms than we do in West Street.

"We only moved in last February but we have already outgrown this. We have become a recognised mental health service in that time.

"People are using us for what we set out to do and we have had a lot more footfall than we did in our previous premises, which is fantastic. We didn't expect to be moving so quickly."

Chris said at least £5,000 was needed to get started in the new premises.

Radio Respect is a community interest company (CIC) and the only radio station dedicated to mental health and mental wellbeing.

It broadcasts around the clock online and has live shows with a team of dedicated volunteers who offer advice and support connected with mental and physical health at the same time as playing good music.

Last Saturday saw a relaunch of the radio broadcasts after a technical upgrade saw it off air for two weeks.

"We had been using our equipment for

a while and we needed to make it more reliable," said Chris.

"People suffering with mental health issues need consistency and we needed to provide that."

He founded Radio Respect in his garden shed six years ago.

He moved the operation to offices in Station Road and built up the broadcasts to a nightly audience of some 60,000 around the world.

THe current equipment enables the listeners' locations in Australia, China and the USA to be shown.

THe desire to become more visible, coupled with chance to raise funds by providing the only vinyl music store in Bognor Regis prompted the radio station's move to West Street with the help of fellow CIC, Grandad's Front Room.

THe secondhand singles and LPs, as well as CDs and hi-fi equipment, have proved popular.

But the the record hunters and those seeking help for mental health matters is making the premises very busy.

"We can have ten people a week coming through our front door looking for help," said Chris. "THat shows we are providing an important service and people want to see us when they have been referred to us.

"We can provide that but we just don't have the room to do that, which means they have to wait in the shop - and noone wants that."

OFFENDERS serving community sentences cleared rubbish from Bognor Regis and Aldwick beaches.

About 80 offenders took part in a day of action at eight beauty spots across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

THey cleared beaches of tin cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags, discarded clothes and shoes and left-behind barbecues. THe rubbish was removed by waste management firm Biffa on behalf of Arun District Council.

Rob Cairns, Kent Surrey and Sussex Community Rehabilitation Company's unpaid work co-ordinator for Littlehampton, said: "THis kind

of work gives a great deal back to the community. Many members of the public passing by said how impressed they were with the team's work and effort. THe beaches were left in a much cleaner state and our team has helped to get the school holidays off to a cleaner start."

THe company wanted to react to the public's concern about the impact of plastic and other non-disposable products. In the past year, the low and medium-risk offenders delivered 395,000 hours of unpaid community work in the region supervised by the company's probation officers.

f Frank Enticknapp with an archive photo of boys' club members BOYS' club archivist Frank Enticknapp is planning a reunion to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the fondly remembered venue.

It was 80 years ago last week a foundation stone for the club was laid by the Duke of Gloucester.

THe facility opened in 1939 and Mr Enticknapp said that would be a date worth remembering.

"We have been getting about 50-60 former members to our reunions.

"We will have some sort of event during next year to co-incide with the actual opening of the club rather than the laying of the foundation stone.

"I have spoken to people in the past who were at the royal visit and they have said about how big an event it was for the town," he said.

"It is absolutely amazing when you

see how the town got behind the club.

Everybody was involved.

"THe more I get involved with looking into the club's past, the more incredible I think it is."

THe Duke put the special stone in place at 6.30pon on Tuesday, July 19, 1938, at the club's site in Westloats Lane during a flying visit to Bognor Regis.

THe original Bognor Regis Post reports him as saying: "I hope that upon it will rise a building which, for many years to come, may bring happiness to the boys who use it, and create in them that fitness of mind, body and character which forms the basis of good citizenship."

A large crowd of people said to have been present. A temporary stand was put up on the playing fields opposite.

A choir of 500 of the town's school children entertained spectators before

the arrival of the Duke, as president of the National Association of Boys' Clubs.

Another foundation stone was laid by esteemed citizen William Fletcher in recognition of his role in enthusiastically promoting the creation of the club.

"I accordingly wish the club every success and prosperity and hope it will be one of the greatest blessings to the town and especially to this part of the town where a large population is so rapidly arising," he said.

Among those present for the important civic occasion was a group of the town's dignitaries and councillors.

THe club continued as a boys' club until 1960 when it became a mixed youth club for several more years.

It is now the Bognor Youth and Community Centre and is home to a range of activities by various groups.

ANGRY residents took to the street in North Bersted to protest against largescale housing developments.

Members of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement and BAD DEAL made their feelings known in the open-air demonstration opposite the intended site of 2,500 homes off Chalcraft Lane.

THe location, known in planning terms as 'west of Bersted', was among those included in the local plan, which Arun District Council's members adopted last Wednesday to guide development until 2031.

A planning application for the housing has yet to be submitted but the local plan says housing there would be acceptable in principle.

Martin Lury, chairman of BAD DEAL (Bersted and Aldwick Developments Destroying Environment and Agricultural Land), said: "Arun will, with their local plan - a source of dubious pride - destroy habitats, concrete over Bognor's back garden, decimate local amenities, seriously compromise Pagham Harbour local nature reserve and engender total chaos on an already inadequate road system with gridlock the norm."

THe council's Conservative majority should reflect upon their 'total disregard of common sense, the proportion of development on the western side of the district and the views of people around Bognor Regis'.

"THey are doing a great disservice to future generations, who will not be able to afford the house prices, by

blighting the landscape forever and creating the nightmare scenario of Bogchester. THat's some plan," he said.

He warned Tory councillors they would face a tough fight to hold on to their seats in next May's local elections.

Nick Stuart-Nicolson, president of Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the fault for Arun's target of 20,000 homes a year laid with central government.

"THe central government should clearly understand that the rising population must be distributed throughout the whole country rather than concentrated on this already overstretched small part of it.

"Further, if we are somehow obliged to accept more and more housing in and around Bognor Regis, then before any of that can happen, the local infrastructure needs urgently upgrading and, in particular, the transport/road network.

"THe A27 has already been recognised as being in crisis but this totally ignores the equally overstretched A259 and all those roads leading into it.

"Already, at the wrong time of day, the car journey time to Brighton or Portsmouth can be doubled. THis must be addressed.

"Without some serious joined up thinking by the appropriate agencies to resolve this headlong attack on our part of West Sussex, then the grim reality of 'Bogchester Regis' is almost upon us."

` Middleton's fete THIS weekend sees Middleton's latest village fete.

THe traditional attractions will all be back at the charity fundraiser on Sunday at Shrubbs Field. A donation from the fete will be made to Chestnut Tree House children's hospice near Arundel.

Arena events will entertain crowds, refreshments will be available in the neighbouring Scout HQ and a giant car boot sale will provide plenty of interest.

THe event will open with a dog show, which is always popular with the pets and their owners.

` A27 agreement UNANIMOUS agreement was given by Arun District Council's members to urge the South Downs National Park Authority to drop its opposition to the recommended route for the A27 Arundel bypass.

Councillors strongly condemned the authority's legal challenge to the route and warned delays would harm the area's economy.

` Wheels stolen A THIEF stole five alloy wheels from a vehicle in Dickinson Place, Bognor Regis, between mid-day and 7am on July 9. A horsebox was also stolen from Graham Road in Yapton overnight on July 14.

Car park to be sold for flats STUDENT flats are set to be built on a Bognor Regis parking site.

Senior Arun district councillors have agreed to offer the London Road coach, lorry and car park to developers.

But the successful bid will need to replace a comparable number of spaces to the current 98 public car parking spaces, six disabled bays and one motorcycle bay.

THe decision to go ahead with the marketing was made at Monday’s meeting of Arun’s cabinet.

Members decided the development of the land would help meet the need for accommodation caused by the University of Chichester’s expansion of its nearby campus by 1,500 students.

Council leader Gillian Brown said: “THis is really good news because previous work has shown each student contributes £10,000 to the economy.

“THis is really good for the local area for a multitude of reasons.”

She called the access to Hotham Park, at the eastern end of the parking site, to be maintained after the redevelopment.

THe current marketing of the site is the second attempt by the council to sell the land for residential purposes.

THe first took place in November, 2016, when the council agreed to work with the University of Chichester on creating student rooms.

An exclusive agreement lasted for six months but ended without any plans. THe university suggested various options last summer but none was considered suitable by the council.

Nat Slade, Arun’s group head of technical services, told the cabinet: “THe council has already received a number of offers in writing for this site.

“THere have been numerous enquiries and a number of suggestions have been made as to how a potential sale could be structured, indicating that we can expect keen interest in the sale.”

In the year to March 31, a total of 42,294 car parking tickets were bought for London Road and 739 for lorries and coaches. Income from the pay and display tickets was £67,000 and a further £5,000 from allowing Royal Mail to use 12 bays.

A section of the car park is also separated for use by the university. Adjoining Edward Bryant School issues parking permits to parents for the start and end of lessons.

Arun could sell the site to boost to its property investment strategy or lease it for a yearly rental income, he said.

Cllr Dudley Wensley, Arun’s deputy leader, said: “THe amount of money the 1,500 new students will bring to Bognor Regis and the district is extremely good news. It is a credit to the town, the district and the university it is attracting all these new students.”

Cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: “THis has been a long time coming. It is good the university has the confidence to provide this expansion.”

THe car park’s public toilets will not be replaced but Arun hopes electric vehicle charge points will be installed in the new car park.

Selfless Peter presents cheque to hospice from his birthday run TEN FAMILIES could benefit from a Middleton runner's generosity.

Cancer patient Peter Chittenden has presented a cheque for £1,466.02 from his charity run he staged to help Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice, near Arundel, and celebrate his 80th birthday.

He presented the donation last week towards the hospice's work with lifelimited and seriously ill children.

Tracy Bowdery, the hospice's community fundraiser for West Sussex and south east Hampshire, said: "£150 will pay for a family of four to benefit from an overnight stay in one of our family rooms while their child is cared for by our specially trained nurses."

She described Peter as a wonderful

man for putting the hospice first.

As reported, Peter staged the run of just under five miles around Arundel Cricket Club last month. A total of 100 runners took part for donations to the hospice.

He said: "It's quite incredible to have raised that money when there were only 100 of us running.

"I am pleased I can help some children with cancer. THe hospice is a great place when you go there."

Peter was among those at the starting line. He is a keen runner but he has been told he has terminal prostate cancer, which has spread to his bones.

He wanted to help children in the same situation rather than sitting at home feeling sorry for his condition.

Erin inspires planned centre

AN ALDWICK couple hope to create a unique centre to help disabled children to walk.

Ash and Victoria Aldridge want to raise £20,000 to create the strength and therapy facility in the garden of their home.

It would enable children like their daughter, seven-year-old Erin, to receive the specialist care they need to overcome conditions like cerebral palsy.

THe couple currently travel to Wales to enable Erin to receive treatment from a world-leading phsiotherapist. THey also know of other families who do the same.

Mr Aldridge, 44, said: “We want to use an existing outbuilding by renovating and adapting the structure for the purpose of a specialist strength and physiotherapy treatment for local disabled children.

“Currently, the nearest specialist facility of this type is located in Cardiff.

THe couple, who also have two sons, hope they will be able to book the expert they use in Cardiff for their centre to reduce the £350 cost of each three day trip to Wales for Erin’s half-day sessions working on her muscles and tendons.

THey received a boost from the first fundraising event for the centre. A better than expected £3,300 was raised by some 250 dancers at a jive night in Worthing’s Assembly Hall earlier this month.

THe night was organised by Stacey Marley, of StaceyModernJive, and her partner, Barry Grout. It was supported by members of four other groups.

As reported, Erin was born prematurely and was diagnosed with quadriplegic celebral palsy at two years old.

It was predicted she would never be able to walk unaided. An NHS trial of life-changing surgery gave some hope.

But this was cancelled at the last minute to leave Mr and Mrs Aldridge to raise £26,000 through their Erin’s Dream to Dance appeal to enable Erin to have the selective dorsal rhizotomy operation privately. THis took place in January, 2017, and the result was immediate.

Erin has been able to walk 26 steps unaided, though her progress halts while her strength catches up with her growth.

“She is a lot more independent now,” said Mrs Aldridge. “Her ability to dress herself is much improved because she is much more flexible.

“It makes life a lot easier for us as a family. It is so nice to see her achieve things. THe look on her face when she has done something for the first time is priceless.”

Lottery backs church HERITAGE experts have given church-goers in Pagham a six-figure boost.

THe Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded St THomas a'Becket Church, led by the Rev Mark Eminson, a £100,000 grant towards the cost of repairing its roof.

THe sizeable donation to the church's Raise the Roof appeal should enable work to make the roof waterproof to start next spring to ensure the building is preserved for future generations.

THe church will remain open and accessible throughout the project.

Worshippers have raised about £130,000 through a range of fundraising activities. THe lottery grant is a major step towards meeting the estimated final cost of the extensive work of some £350,000.

Michael Wake, the project's co-ordinator at the church, said: "We are delighted to receive this support and are really grateful to, and thankful for, all those who play the National Lottery which makes these awards possible.

"We confident that, with this support, we will

be able to complete our project so that we can continue to serve our parish and community, allowing all to enjoy their heritage."

St THomas a'Becket Church is a Grade-I listed building and has been in Pagham for more than 800 years.

THe grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund will enable people to learn more about the area's history with new guidebooks, leaflets and website content. an exhibition of the restoration project for the benefit of schools, uniformed groups, local history societies and others will also be held.

Michelle Roffe, the head of Heritage Lottery Fund South East, said: "We are delighted to support Pagham Parochial Church Council and share the heritage of this important church.

"THanks to National Lottery players, this vital local building will be saved and brought to life for current and future generations."

THe Raise the Roof appeal was launched in September, 2016, after a survey showed thousands of tiles needed replacing on the roof.

Mrs Bartle’s appearance at Arun District Council’s housing and customer services working group last THursday was her first since she was appointed just under three months ago.

Figures given at the official opening of Stonepillow’s hostel in Ellasdale Road, Bognor Regis, last month showed 106 people had used the charity in a few weeks.

THe building’s 16 en-suite bedrooms have been full from the day it opened to complement the charity’s established facilities around the town and in Chichester.

She estimated 40 per cent were women after a rise in their numbers sleeping rough.

“THey are young women, under 25 mainly. THey have a complexity of needs. A big issue around the area at the moment is drugs, particularly crack cocaine, and they have been sucked into prostitution as well and we are having to deal with that,” she said. More people had become homeless in recent years.

“THere are a lot more people sleeping rough because of changes in the welfare system. THat is a problem for local communities and local businesses,” she said.

“One thing we are seeing is much more younger clients coming through. In the past, the spread of ages was from 18 to 70 odd but we are now seeing a shift to 18 to 25, and even up to 35 years old.”

Attack on site sale secrecy A SILENCING order over the future of a key Bognor Regis site has been attacked by one of the town's councillors.

Cllr Francis Oppler said strict laws made it impossible for him to tell residents the full story of Arun District Council's proposals for the Regis Centre.

"THis is public land and public money and people have the right to know what is going on," he said.

"THe redevelopment of the Regis Centre site has to be for the benefit of the town but it is being treated as a top secret document. I accept some aspects of the report we were given have to be treated as confidential. But the bulk of it should be made public. It is fundamentally wrong to do otherwise," said Cllr Oppler.

As reported, Arun decided to go ahead with the delivery of a hotel as the first phase of its Winter Gardens regeneration plans for the seafront location.

THe decision was taken at last week's full council meeting after a vote by councillors to exclude the press and public because it related to financial and business affairs.

Any councillor who breaks that confidentiality is likely to be subject to strict sanctions. But it can be revealed the hotel will be built in the south-eastern corner of the site.

THis will involve Arun selling that portion of land and the former fire station in Clarence Road, which serves as an annex to the town hall being demolished.

Cllr Oppler (LD, Orchard) said he also

believed the hotel could be up to six storeys high.

"THe town hall is three storeys high, so the hotel will be a lot taller. It will completely change the outlook for the residents who live in Berkeley Court, like town councillor Jeanette Warr, and the surrounding area and affect their quality of life," he said.

Information released by Arun this week showed 14 resolutions were agreed by councillors in the private debate.

THey include authorising senior officers and councillors to enter into talks with Whitbread, which leases the Regis Centre from Arun, about the disposal of the freehold for the hotel and the early surrender of the lease.

It is also envisaged Arun leasing the part of the Regis Centre which is a pub, budgeting for the centre's running costs and make allowances for any repairs.

THe councillors also agreed their officers should start work on a planning application for the rest of the Winter Gardens scheme - new theatre, flats, multi-storey car park, restaurants and a potential new use for the town hall.

THey also ruled out making binding legal agreements to regenerate the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites with anyone else.

An Arun spokesman said the report contained commercially sensitive details but the resolutions and decisions from the debate were publicly available. THe minutes will also summarise the debate.

Fines warning to owners who take dogs on to town beaches DOG OWNERS who take their pets on to Bognor Regis and Felpham beaches have been warned they face being fined.

Arun District Council has been receiving complaints that people have been taking dogs on to beaches in areas from which they are banned from May 1 to September 30 annually.

Two of the three beaches concerned stretch from Park Road to Gloucester Road in Bognor Regis and in Felpham from Canning Road to Felpham Sailing Club. THe other is in Littlehampton.

Officers will be patrolling the beaches and fixed penalty notices

will be issued to those who choose to ignore the restrictions.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun District Council's cabinet member for technical services, said: "We have 14 miles of beautiful coastline in Arun.

"We are happy to see dogs running around on the vast majority of our beaches throughout the year, as long as their owners keep them under control and clear up after them.

"However, there are restrictions on three beaches during the summer season because they are very popular with bathers and those enjoying picnics..."

Apology wanted for council debate TWO COUNCILLORS from around Bognor Regis have called for an apology about their treatment at a crucial council meeting.

Liberal Democrats Matt Stanley and Martin Smith said they believed the behaviour by members of the ruling Conservative group of Arun District Council was disgraceful during the debate about the council's local plan.

During the meeting last Wednesday, they said they were shouted at, spoken over and subjected to mumbling and sniggering when they had the chance to speak. Sighs could also be heard when their names were called.

THey said they believed the behaviour amounted to bullying and wanted a formal apology.

Cllr Smith (Aldwick W) said: "I was shocked when a Conservative councillor requested our votes were not taken into account and, during an agenda item, Matt was simply refused the opportunity

to speak.

"Since then, I have been contacted by numerous members of the public who were present at the meeting, also appalled by the behaviour they saw."

Cllr Stanley (Marine) said: "I fully expect debate to be hard and challenging but these were blatant attempts to intimidate.

"Other councillors who opposed the local plan were not subject to this behaviour. I can only, therefore, assume we were being specifically targeted.

"On more than one occasion, we were referred to as 'the young councillors'.

Arun's Tory group leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, has been contacted to comment about the complaints.

THe often heated debate ended with councillors adopting Arun's local plan to decide where development should take place until 2031.

THis includes large-scale housing schemes in Pagham and North Bersted.

` Country fair ALL THE fun of the countryside is returning to Bognor Regis next month.

THe 17th Hotham Park Country Fair is being staged from 11am-5pm on August 4 and 5.

THe ever-popular weekend is being staged by the Hotham Park Heritage Trust and includes some of the favourite entertainment from previous years and new attractions.

A trust spokesman said: "Within the park, there will be something for visitors of all ages to enjoy. THe art and craft stalls will be packed with wonderful goods to purchase and there will be a good variety of hot food and refreshing drink stalls too.

"As always, the bandstand will be in full swing with some great music, dancing and singing."

THe event will be opened by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Caroline Nicholls, and it is sponsored by Butlin's, which will be providing activities and some of its best-known characters.

` Cricket backing CRICKETERS in Bognor Regis are benefiting from a renewed sponsorship deal. THe town's cricket club is again being backed by the Bognor Regis branch of Covers timber and builders' merchants.

Andy Lee, from the club, said: "We are so grateful to Covers for its support and we are delighted it is continuing to sponsor the club."

Covers depot manager Paul Allwright said the company was proud to sponsor the club.

Entertainers liven up town's market SINGERS and dancers entertained customers at the latest artisan market in Bognor Regis.

Among the groups which performed at last Saturday's event was Knightstar Productions.

One of its solo spots was filled by Eadie Swanton, 13, with I'll Try from Peter Pan. "I used to get nervous," she said, "but I have been doing this for a long time.

"I like the atmosphere of belonging to a group like this because we are like family.

I like being on stage. I find it enjoyable and I like being someone else."

Knightstar Productions owner Jackie Kenyon said: "It's nice for the children to perform in the open air because it's not every often they get to do that.

"It boosts their confidence and being here is not just about the end result. it's about the children making friends, increasing their confidence and, above

all, having fun."

THe performers staged two 30-minute shows outside Bognor Regis Methodist Church opposite Queensway with a half hourly break. THe market was the second to be held this year.

Organiser Chris Warden said the church hall was filled with 20 stalls and a further four were outside.

"THe market has now become established and the weather has held off.

"THere are a lot of people here, seeing what items are for sale in the market.

THe craftsmen and women were selling a range of handmade items. THe Campaign to Protect Rural England's Arun group was also represented.

THe market has been held regularly for the past two years and the latest was the first to be sponsored by Yeomans Nissan. Further markets are being held in September and December.

Extra fundays for lack of rink

A PLANNED roller rink on Bognor Regis seafront this summer has been cancelled.

THe attraction was intended to be one of the main features of this year's Funshine Days being held by the town council. But the council's civic and office manager, Jo Davis, said on Tuesday the cancellation was because of circumstances beyond its control.

"We have been working very hard to avoid this outcome but, despite our best efforts, the company with whom we had made the arrangements is no longer in a position to provide what we had planned," she said.

"Becoming aware of this at such a late stage has meant that we've been unable to source a mobile roller rink from an

alternative supplier."

THe giant outdoor roller rink was due to have been open all day next THursday on the Place St Maur.

It promised skaters some classic 80s tracks for the perfect setting for some fluro legwarmers and deely boppers to recreate the fashion of the decade.

THe additional free Funshine Days will be held next Tuesday, Wednesday and THursday at the seafront bandstand.

THe ever-popular donkey rides will be available from 11am-3pm on the first day. THey will be followed by circus skills workshops between the same times on Wednesday and THursday.

THe Funshine Days will continue on August 7-9 and August 14-16.

University puts future on show to put science into children's hands RADIOACTIVE bananas, exploding meteors and homemade torches brought science alive at a Bognor Regis event.

THe town’s latest Future Fest took the subject out of the classroom and into the hands of its young visitors.

More than 900 children and their parents went along to the University of Chichester’s campus to gain inspiration at the start of the summer holiday.

THe event took place next door to the £35m tech park, which is due to open in September.

Potential student Elliott Simpson, nine, was among those who took part in coding sessions to programme Raspberry Pi computers to create sparkles on its screen.

His mother, Nichola Simpson, 41, of Pagham, said: “We came last year and were really impressed with all the activities that were going on. We thought we would come back again so we can do everything.

“Elliott is very much into computer and technology and something like this helps to look at the possibilities he could go into in the future. We are on the doorstep of the university with the new tech park, which is going to be really good. I could see Elliott going there, even though he’s only nine."

Elliott said: “THis has been good fun. I felt happy when I saw the sparkles on the screen and I want to do more."

Last Saturday’s event at the Upper Bognor Road site was the second to be held by the university.

Its head of outreach and college engagement, Lesley-Anne Neville, said the day had been a great success and thanked everyone who went along.

“We have got a fantastic turnout of people. Everyone is having a good day.

“It’s important to engage with our local community about our new tech park and show them the excitement and possibilities of science subjects.

“THere are also science shortages in the local area and there is a need for engineers and scientists," she said.

THe host of activities on offer took place in four zones – space, technology, creative and transport.

THe highlights included an indoor planetarium, creating stop-motion animation, robots and mechanical hands, green power, bottle rockets, a science and a show from THe Royal Institution about energy.

Henry Macrae, ten, enjoyed the chance to handle a 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite. He then dropped a ‘meteor’, in the form of Playdough, into a sand pit with humans and a house and mountains to see how the earth’s surface was formed.

His second attempt re-arranged the mountain. He said: “I like doing the experiments. THe meteor was really heavy because it was made of iron.

“It’s really fun finding about the robots as well. You can see what the future will be here.”

Joshua Woodman, seven, spent time in the creative zone making a torch and

creating an eco-house out of cardboard.

“I’m enjoying it. I like making things. I feel good when I have made something because it’s an achievement.”

Hattie Middleton, ten, was another torch-maker from two batteries, a foam divider, a bulb and some binding.

She said: “I made the torch out of two batteries and a light. I felt happy about it. I didn’t know how you made a torch.”

Next door, the young visitors could create a greenhouse in a bag and take it home with them.

Sherry Ware, the university’s widening participation officer, said: “THis is all about looking at things at home and seeing how they can be recycled.”

THe greenhouse was created from a resealable freezer bag, compost and radish seeds.

“If the children stick it on their bedroom window, they can see the radish grow. It is the fastest growing plant and should take 23 days before they can eat it," she said.

And the radioactive bananas? THey came courtesy of Dan Plane, a lecturer with THe Royal Institution. His entertaining and informative show about the sources of energy included radioactivity and the fact bananas contain a minute amount because of decaying potassium.

A blowtorch, a smashed egg and a angle grinder also featured to the keep the children in the audiences of his four shows fascinated.

` Town hall usage MORE than 18,000 customers visited Bognor Regis Town Hall for help in the past civic year.

THe number made up 44 per cent of those who sought face to face assistance with Arun District Council staff for matters like housing in the year to the end of last March.

THe figure was given to Arun's housing and customer service working group last THursday.

THe 18,346 visitors was slightly down on the 20,360 in the previous year, while the number of visitors to Arun Civic Centre increased by 3,000 to 23,058.

Lisa Emmens, the council's contact centre supervisor, said: "THis identifies a continued demand for customers wanting to visit the offices in both Littlehampton and Bognor Regis."

Usage of the council's website is increasing and phone calls declined by ten per cent from 2013/14 but still reached 170,726.

Olivia crosses ocean to care VETERINARY student Olivia Smith has brought some transatlantic TLC to rescued horses in Pagham.

Olivia, 19, is ending her five-week internship at Pagham Ponies on a visit from her home in northern California.

She has spent her time with Nigel Mundy and his helpers to give their 12 horses and ponies in his sanctuary some extra care and attention.

THe experience has enabled her to put into practice learning she has gained during the first year of her four-year animal science major course at the University California Davis.

She said: “Nigel does such wonderful work and hands-on experience is very important to me, especially for the track I am on. THe more experience, the better it will be for my resume and help me to become a well-rounded person.”

Pagham Ponies has been run by Nigel for more than ten years on land he can use at Church Barton House off Pagham Road.

He takes in horses with health and behavourial problems and those that have been abused and neglected.

THey range in age from seven to 30 and typical volunteering work includes mucking out, filling hay nets, grooming and filling water troughs and bowls.

Among them is Barney. THe 13-yearold miniature pony is the second latest arrival with Pagham Ponies.

He was showing signs of depression after he had lost his life-long partner and also had joint problems. Care and

medication has settled him down.

Olivia said: “He is the most chilled out horse you can imagine. He looks like he is in a daze all the time. He is always happy munching on his grass.”

Olivia’s love for horses began when she was ten and began to help at a foundation for the abandoned animals near her family home in the El Doraldo Hills near Sacramento.

She followed that with a month at Pagham Ponies in 2016 after her grandparents, Reg and Elizabeth Smith, of Ledbury Way, found out about the sanctuary.

She has again stayed with them during her latest visit. She said: “Horses are therapeutic animals, which is very important for the public to understand.

Being around horses really does something for your soul and it’s really helpful to be around them.”

University California Davis is the world’s leading veterinary university.

When Olivia’s course ends, she will move on to a further four-year course before she qualifies as a vet.

"My current course teaches you everything about animals and the business which surrounds them.

"I have always loved animals. I used to wrangle goats when I was younger."

Olivia accompanied Barney to a fete on Aldwick Green earlier this month.

Pagham Ponies will also visit the Hotham Park Country Fair on August 4 and 5, as well as Pagham on Parade on August 19.

Sessions talk sense about drug misuse DRUG awareness workshops for all ages have been held by Felpham Community College.

About 100 parents attended an evening session last week after the daytime events for students across all year groups and their staff.

THe workshops took place because of the college's awareness of a growing drug issue among some young people in the community and it wanted to be proactive with their education and to make people aware of how they could combat the ongoing issue.

Mark Anstiss, the college's headteacher, said: "We recognise it is important for schools, outside agencies and parents to work together to support and advise young people appropriately and to tackle this growing drug culture concern.

"THe workshops presented to students the dangers of drug use. THey then gave an informative presentation to staff and parents on how they can best support their students/children and look out for signs of drug use."

THe workshops were run by Drug Sense UK and looked at the realities of using and dealing drugs.

East met west at the college when its pupils were joined by student teachers from South Korea.

THe two students, Ms Jung Eun Young and Ms Kim Ha Kyoung, spent seven

days at the college as part of an initiative with the University of Chichester.

THey observed and took part in lessons as well as speaking to students and finding out about how the college worked.

THe visitors finished their visit with a presentation to a group of students about life in South Korea - featuring the country's education system, industries and culture.

Nancy Newstead, a Year 7 student, said: "THe Korean ladies were really nice, really friendly and it was interesting to hear about life in Korea. THey taught us the symbol for the Korean heart and my friends are going to use it.

"I had never really thought about going to Korea but, since the presentation, it sounds like a really interesting place to visit as their culture is so different to ours."

THis was the second year the college had joined with the university to host South Korean student teachers.

Paul Darbyshire, the college's curriculum leader for business and vocational studies, said: "Last year we really enjoyed having our visitors from South Korea and this year it has proved another success.

"THey have given us a real insight into the life and culture in Korea and our students have found it fascinating."

` Waste site permit

PERMITS will be needed by drivers of commercial-type vehicles at household waste recycling sites around West Sussex.

From October 1, the county council is insisting all its residents who use a van, pickup or single axle trailer have a permit.

Trailers will also be banned from the sites in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton from that date.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, county council cabinet member for environment, said: "THe changes are intended to help speed up visits, avoid illegal commercial waste and encourage residents in other counties with large loads to use sites provided by their own local authority."

Vehicles such as multi-axle trailers, horse boxes and flatbed or dropside trucks will also be banned from the sites.

Residents can start to apply for a permit from next Wednesday.

Charity Shop Stock Processing Assistant – 4Sight Vision Support 4Sight Vision Support aims to raise funds and provide services for the well-being and independence of blind and partially sighted people in West Sussex. The purpose of the role is to assist the Shop Manager and the Assistant Shop Manager in the daily tasks of sorting donated items to maximise sales and profitability. Tasks will include: providing help in the stockroom for all donated items: clothing, bric-a-brac etc.; preparing bric-a-brac stock items for sale by cleaning; ensuring good housekeeping of backroom, kitchen and facilities; steaming, cubing and labelling garments; replenishing refreshments and cleaning sundries for team; and assisting on the shop floor if required.

Family Support Volunteer – Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur Home-Start volunteers visit families with a least one child under-five. Volunteers offer support to families facing a wide range of issues, such as loneliness and isolation, illhealth, depression, bereavement, relationship difficulties,

multiple births, special needs, first time parenthood, domestic violence or disability. Visits take place weekly in the family’s own home. Volunteers are someone the family can talk to confidentially, they can play with the children or introduce ideas for activities; they could be an ‘extra pair of hands’ in everyday situations or accompany on outings to the park, library or toddler group. Volunteers can also give information on services and offer reassurance and understanding that bringing up children can be difficult.

Volunteers need to be parents themselves or have had 24 hour parenting experience (as a step-parent, adoptive parent or foster carer).

Buddy Volunteer – Macmillan Cancer Support Macmillan Buddies is a volunteer befriending service. It aims to support people affected by cancer in their homes or in the community by providing a listening ear and support with small practical tasks. They are looking for volunteers to support the service and provide a ‘listening ear’ to people out in the community. This will be a community based project providing support to people in their homes or a mutually agreed location. By providing

this support they are hoping to alleviate the loneliness and isolation people often feel when diagnosed with cancer or going through treatment.

Ward Volunteer/Meal-time Assistant – St Richards Hospital, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Volunteers are needed at St Richard’s Hospital to act as a Dining Companion, tasked with: assisting with patient menu round; performing hourly checks to ensure patients have access to call bell, drink if appropriate, glasses, hearing aid etc.; pushing patients in wheelchairs; accompanying patients within the hospital; helping with bed-making; shopping for patients at the hospital shop; assisting with wiping down patient tray tables and locker tops to comply with Infection Control requirements; running errands for staff to the Pharmacy, other wards and departments; providing emotional support, befriending and listening if required and acting as a liaison between the patient and the nursing staff; assisting with the collection of patient satisfaction data; and assisting with the maintenance and monitoring of a clean and uncluttered environment.

Sky is the limit for Lisa to help school CHILDREN in Kenya will able to enjoy a healthier education thanks to a manager at the Chichester College Group.

A skydive by Lisa Humphries raised more than £2,500 towards a kitchen at the Walk Centre in Nakuru.

Lisa, the group director of student services and pastoral support, said: "It was insane, terrifying and amazing.

"I hadn't really considered the enormity of it until we were 15,000 feet in the air and getting ready to jump.

"I was surprised to raise so much but I guess a lot of people wanted to pay

money to throw me out of a plane!"

THe Walk Centre opened a new school last year, which gives children from the Hilton slum area the chance to receive an education because of the fundraising efforts fo staff and students at Chichester College.

THey raised more than £80,000 over two years but a kitchen is still needed.

THat has formed the focus for this year's fundraising efforts.

A team of 30 volunteers from the college have paid to travel to Kenya where they will help to build the kitchen, create a

library and renovate more classrooms as well as teaching and working with pupils.

THeir work is carried out with the African Adventures Foundation.

Lisa is making her eighth visit to the centre. She added: "THe Walk Centre aims to provide a quality education to thousands of children in Nakuru who are living in extreme poverty.

"Seeing the work we do with African Adventures and being a part of that will be life-changing for the volunteers.

"It's an emotional experience. It is hard work but it is extremely worthwhile."

Total eclipse of the moon tonight RESIDENTS in Bognor Regis and Chichester will be able to witness a total eclipse of the moon this evening.

Eclipses of the moon occur when the Full Moon passes through the cone of shadow cast by the Earth into space.

THis will be the first central lunar eclipse (when it passes through the centre of the Earth's umbral shadow) since June 15, 2011.

Weather permitting, this will be an fascinating event to watch from the UK because the moon will rise totally eclipsed, giving plenty of opportunities for stunning images of a 'ghostly red moon' above buildings and the landscape.

For Chichester and Bognor Regis the times are - moonrise at 8.49pm, maximum eclipse 9.22pm and end of total eclipse 10.13pm Dr John Mason, from South Downs Planetarium in Chichester, said: "THe

visibility and appearance of the totally eclipsed moon at moonrise will depend on how clear the south-eastern sky is from your location at the time.

"With the naked eye, the moon may well not be discernible until it has risen a few degrees above the local horizon, but with binoculars or a telescope it will be seen more easily. It is while the moon is still low in the sky that there should be plenty of possibilities for interesting images.

"THe moon will rise in the south-eastern sky already totally eclipsed, so to get the best view you probably want to be down on the coast on a beach that faces southeast or south.

"THe brilliant red planet, Mars will be just below and to the right of the totally eclipsed moon. As an added bonus for skywatchers this evening, the International Space Station will pass right over Southern England twice during the eclipse!"

` Woman robbed TWO people are being sought by police after they robbed a woman in a Bognor Regis street.

THe 51-year-old victim was walking from the car park in Sudley Road through the walkway between shops into the London Road precinct just before 2pm last Friday. She bumped into a man and a woman as they came round the corner.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "THey apologised profusely, helping her pick up her bags before heading off. THey were dressed in matching grey tracksuits.

"She then discovered an envelope containing an amount of cash that she was planning to bank had gone missing, along with her purse."

School celebrates birthday EVERY pupil was invited to a Bognor Regis school's golden anniversary.

All 600 children at Edward Bryant School enjoyed the 50th birthday celebration with Malcolm the Magician.

THe performer delighted them at three one-hour shows with a range of tricks from a snowstorm and miraculous flowers and balls.

Among one of his audiences were Oscar Lawrence, seven, and Joe Ingram, eight.

Oscar said: "THe magician was very funny. I liked it best when he put the dice in a box and it went into a hat."

Joe said: "I think he is very clever."

Malcolm the Magician said he had enjoyed the occasion. "THey have been absolutely amazing audiences. I love seeing the children's faces, seeing them smile and being happy," he said.

THe shows took place last THursday - 50 years to the day of the official opening of the school at its London Road site after a move from its original premises in Lyon Street.

THe ceremony was carried out by Mr Bryant's widow, Winifred Bryant, on the fifth anniversary of his death. Mr Bryant had been a prominent councillor in the town and a former mayor.

Assistant headteacher and Year 6 teacher Barry Robinson said: "THe shows went really well. THe children loved them. THe parents enjoyed them as well and loved the costumes."

Among the performers last week was Matilda Groves, 11, as Shere Khan. She said: "It's really fun playing a baddie.

I'm really enjoying it.

"I've never done that before in the drama group I belong to.

"I feel scared before I go on stage but I love it when I am there and never want it to end."

Megan McGarry, 11, was Bagheera.

She said: "It's the first time I have been in a play here and I'm excited."

Baloo was played by William Wreford, 11. He said: "I've played Baloo before but this is a completely different script."

Wendy sews up first deal to sell blankets f Bognor Ladies Cricket Club receives the cheque

Crime proceeds help cricketers STOLEN goods have benefited pioneering women cricketers in Bognor Regis.

Police in the town have donated ÂŁ500 to Bognor Ladies Cricket Club to fund kit for new players trying the sport to avoid them having to buy expensive items without knowing if they want to play the game.

THe donation came from the Police Property Act Fund made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by court order and sold.

Team captain Tanya Wake said: "THis money towards shirts and kit for our team is received with many thanks and is much appreciated."

Lisa Jacocks-Winslow, the club's

treasurer, said: "We are the first women's team in Bognor area and have entered both a 35-over and a T20 competition this year.

"We are currently second in both. We are actively seeking new members and train at Hawthorn Road from 6pm to 7.30pm on Fridays.

THe donation was presented by PCSO Neil Billingham.

He said: "With the growing popularity of women's sport across the country, it is great to be able to support a local team looking to increase their numbers."

SKILLED Fontwell knitter Wendy Webb hopes her handmade baby blankets will be her dream ticket for a new business.

Wendy is among a handful of local artisans to have their crafts shown for sale in the new multi-million pound centre at the Aldingbourne Country Centre. THe facility is due to open soon to complement the well-established attractions at the centre.

Visitors will be able to see the results of Wendy's handiwork, which she calls Baa-Baa Blankets, to give their babies a comfortable sleep.

She said: "I was surprised and delighted for my blankets to be chosen to sold in the new building. It is my first outlet and it's good that my potential customers will be able to see and feel my blankets, which they can't do on my website: baabaablankets1.wixsite.com/mysite.

"All my blankets are unique. I enjoy designing them. It encourages me to be inventive and knitting is therapeutic.

"I like the fact I am the only person who has created that particular design. It's like an artist with a painting."

Wendy, 62, of Wandleys Lane, made

her first blanket for a friend of her daughter, Charlotte Shackleton, 38, four years ago. Occasional blankets followed as word of mouth spread.

THe reaction to them encouraged her to devote more time to the blankets after she was made redundant from her customer service job.

Her blankets fit Moses baskets, pram cradles and cots and have a knitted top, quilt middle and polar fleece underside for the snuggest of fits. THey can be matched with equally bespoke buddies, or comforters, and nursery bunting.

Staying safe with foods to help fight stomach bacteria

HELICOBACTER pylori, also known as H. pylori, is a bacterium that is commonly found in the stomach. It is present in about half of the world's m population. Symptoms: Most individuals with chronic gastritis or duodenitis have no symptoms. However, some people develop more serious problems, including stomach or duodenal ulcers. You can also feel discomfort in your back, chest, suffer from bloating and feeling full, even when very little has been eaten. It can cause a lack of appetite, nausea, dark stools, ulcers that bleed and low blood count as well as significant weight loss.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Breath tests — Breath tests (known as urea breath tests) require that you drink a specialised solution containing a substance that is broken down by the H. pylori bacterium. THe breakdown products can be detected in your breath.

Stool tests — Tests are available that detect H. pylori proteins in stool.

Blood tests — Blood tests can detect specific antibodies (proteins) that the body's immune system develops in response to the H. pylori bacterium. However, concerns over its accuracy have limited its use.

Medications — No single drug cures H. pylori infection. Most treatment regimens involve taking several medications for 14 days.

Most of the treatment regimens include a medication called a proton pump inhibitor. THis medication decreases the stomach's production of acid, which allows the tissues damaged by the infection to heal. Examples of proton pump inhibitors include lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec), pantoprazole (Protonix), rabeprazole (AcipHex), dexlansoprazole (Dexilant), and esomeprazole (Nexium).

Two antibiotics are also generally recommended; this reduces the risk of treatment failure and

antibiotic resistance. However, there are increasing numbers of patients with H. pylori infection that is resistant to antibiotics, so it is important to take all the medications prescribed and to have a test that confirms that the infection has been cleared. If the first treatment fails, re-treatment is required and at least one of the antibiotics is different from those used in the first treatment course.

Follow-up — After completing H. pylori treatment, repeat testing is usually performed to ensure that the infection has resolved. THis is typically done with a breath or stool test. Blood tests are not recommended for follow up testing; the antibody detected by the blood test often remains in the blood for four or more months after treatment, even after the infection is eliminated.

THere are specific foods that you can include in your daily regime that will help with this condition too, and some patients have reported getting great results from foods and herbs.

The best foods are: 1. Cranberries, as they contain proanthocyanidins which kill the bacteria.

2. Broccoli and cabbage contain isothiocyanates - particularly one called sulforaphane, and are very potent at killing h. pylori. THe foods highest in sulforaphanes are sauerkraut juice, broccoli, and broccoli sprouts.

3. Garlic, onions, scallions, leeks, and shallots all act as a powerful natural antibiotic.

4. Green tea contains antioxidants, which can boost health and reduce inflammation.

martin.lury@me.com A CHANCE perusal of a restaurant wine menu furnished me with the subject for my wine column this week - namely that of establishments which offer a good range of wine, but do not set prohibitive prices, thus equating to value-for-money regular offers.

THe Bear in Pagham, run by convivial hosts Graham and Suzanne Godwyn, is an 18th century coaching inn and a traditional pub with a reputation for good food and was my destination for Sunday lunch last week.

THe food, as ever, was of good quality (try a roast!), but it was the wine menu which captured my attention with

white wines, all served by the glass also, ranging from just £13.50 a bottle to the hardly lofty heights of £18 for a Sauvignon Blanc.

THe red wines similarly ranged from £13.50 to £17.95. THe Nandu Sauvignon Blanc of Chilean provenance, one of two entry-level white wines, priced at £13.50 a bottle, proved to be perfectly palatable with a light herbal character and oozing zesty citrus freshness with a hint of grapefruit.

Next for just an outlay of £15, the USA Wandering Bear Chardonnay (the only errant American one I recall was Yogi!) was big and juicy, yet soft and most quaffable!

Tropical fruit flavours to the fore with pineapple particularly prominent and a hint of toasted almond, this wine is one for people who do not like their wines too dry!

For £18, the Akau Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough has hints of nettle, is crisp, vibrant and fruity with gooseberries to the fore with citrus flavours lingering in the mouth and a smooth, long finish.

In terms of red wines, I will also concentrate on three in particular,

commencing with the Wandering Bear USA Merlot, priced at £15 a bottle, sporting soft and juicy wine aromas of forest fruit and plums with a slight hint of oak and some dark chocolate.

THis wine is full of fruit and a veritable crowd pleaser! I next espied an old favourite of mine, namely a L'Instant Truffier Malbec - a modern style from the Rigal family in Cahors, the spiritual home of Malbec.

THis one is a lovely Cahors with fairly smooth tannins and a touch of spice.

THere is a nice mélange of flavours with black cherry, pepper and a touch of anise. Hints of French sophistication add to its quality and it would complement red meats, game or duck.

My last choice was that of a Mondavi Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon, priced at £16.95, with a deep ruby colour, firm tannins and being fruit forward with black cherry plum, blackberry, tobacco, vanilla and cedar in evidence - a panoply of flavours to savour.

6. Manuka honey contains a natural form of hydrogen peroxide in it, which is great for treating bacterial infections.

7. Oil of oregano contains a chemical called carvacrol, which works by destroying the cell membranes of bacteria and stopping them from replicating. A great thing about oil of oregano is that it kills bad bacteria while keeping healthy bacteria intact.

8. Vitamin C (especially citrus fruits). High amounts of vitamin C in diets is essential as it reduces inflammation and protects against h. pylori infection.

11. Certain probiotics. A probiotic is any bacteria which has positive effects when taken. In the case of h. pylori, certain probiotics can fight off the harmful bacteria while healing the stomach lining and reducing symptoms.

Community News & Views HOW BEST to support people with learning disabilities who are facing death or a bereavement in their families will be discussed at a Universirty of Chichester conference.

Facing Death and Afterwards - People with Learning Disabilities, being held in October, is aimed at providing professionals with an understanding of how to advise during difficult circumstances.

THe event is being held with St Wilfrid's Hospice and will cover topics as diverse at the practicalities of breaking bad news, advanced care planning, spirituality and planning a funeral.

THe organiser, Marie Price, pictured below, is a senior lecturer in the university's department of childhood, social work and social care. She said: "Addressing the issue of working with people with learning or intellectual disabilities facing death is topical and long overdue.

"THis is the second in a series of events focusing on death and bereavement and their impact on specific groups in society.

"We firmly believe that we have created a 'must-attend' event for professionals who work with people with learning or intellectual disabilities."

Also taking part in the conference will be Irene Tuffrey-Wijne, the associate professor in intellectual disability and palliative care at St George's University and Kingston University.

Her research around people with intellectual disabilities and death covers areas such as cancer, breaking bad news and the extent to which care professionals discuss dying with the people they support.

THe conference will be hosted at the university's campus in Bognor Regis. Attendance costs £60, or £50 for charities and concessions, with lunch included.

MORE people across Kent, Surrey and Sussex are being given access to new and better treatments through taking part in clinical research.

THe latest figures from the National Institute for Health Research 36,143 patients and healthy volunteers took part in a range of health research studies across the south-east of England in 2017/18.

THis was the highest number on record and covered all the region's NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups, which buy treatments.

Dr Kate Jones, the area's chief operating officer for National Institute for Health Research clinical research network, said: "I am delighted to see such progress with our endeavour to offer equitable access for patients to high quality research, delivered by expert teams in our region.

"THe hard work and dedication of the professionals working with patients, clients and their loved ones to offer cutting edge treatments and technology is commendable and makes a real difference to patients and the care they receive."

Both patients and healthy volunteers are encouraged to talk to their healthcare practitioners about taking part in clinical research.

THe latest league table published by the network also shows the extent of commercial research activity being supported by the national institute in the trusts and commissioning groups.

In 2017/18, the network for Kent, Surrey and Sussex had the second highest commercial research activity in England with a best-ever number of 161 studies.

Dr Jonathan Sheffield, the network's chief executive, said: "By taking part in life sciences industry studies, patients are participating in new and innovative forms of treatment which will provide evidence for future improved care for all patients."

THe knowledge gained could lead to new NHS treatments.

FORMER Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall has ensured people with epilepsy can be supported.

Cllr Woodall has presented a £665 cheque to Epilepsy Action as one of the charities he chose to receive funds from his year in office, which ended two months ago.

He handed over the donation to Dani Beach, an Epilepsy Action volunteer, pictured above.

A spokesman said: "We are immensely grateful to Cllr Woodhall for choosing us as one of his charities for his year as town mayor.

"Phil has gone above and beyond to raise money, especially in his last week as mayor, where he faced his fears of heights and water, dressed as a superhero.

"THe money he has raised

will help us support even more people with epilepsy, including supporting local groups, such as the Epilepsy Action Bognor Regis coffee and chat group.

"Epilepsy Action has an extensive network of branches, coffee and chat groups and volunteers throughout the UK. "THese groups provide local support to people with epilepsy, their family and friends and professional carers.

"Donations like Phil's help Epilepsy Action to set up more local groups and branches across the country.

"Branches and groups enable people living with epilepsy with a way to meet new people, share experiences and learn more about life with epilepsy."

FAMILIES living with domestic abuse in West Sussex will benefit from a pioneering partnership.

West Sussex County Council has jointly commissioned an innovative pilot with the charity, SafeLives, and other partners to enhance its approach to support and protect the families of victims of the abuse.

Cllr Jo Millward, the council's service leader for integrated prevention and earliest help service, said the new initiative would complement the high-risk domestic abuse services that exist within West Sussex.

"Safeguarding whole families from abuse is already one of the council's key priorities and we are united with everyone involved in this project in our desires to identify anyone impacted by any form of abuse and to support them to receive the appropriate help they need."

THe partnership will focus on support to stop situations becoming worse, support for the complex needs, which can be worsened by the abuse, many people have, help for children and young people and backing for survivors to recover from the harm and to heal and build resilience.

County council cabinet member for children and young people, Cllr Stephen Hillier, said: "We are excited that West Sussex is to be one of only two areas in the country to conduct this pilot. We hope the innovative research will help victims in West Sussex and, eventually, support families across the country."

THe pilot will include training and guidance for professionals, enhancing skills and supporting agencies to work together to create a culture of engagement with the people and communities they serve.

Suzanne Jacob, chief executive of SafeLives, said it was pleased to be working with the county council and its other partners, THe YOU Trust, Aurora New Dawnand THe Hampton Trust, to help to improve local and national responses to domestic abuse.

"West Sussex is showing itself to be in the vanguard of meaningful change - refusing to accept that domestic abuse is inevitable or acceptable and recognising that what happens to the parent, happens to the child too.

"We know that 85 per cent of victims of domestic abuse seek help five times on average before they get effective help. THis is four times too many."

THe project is being funded by a range of backers.

PERSONAL experience led to Cllr Phil Woodall, the former town mayor of Bognor Regis, to support the Alzheimer's Society.

Cllr Woodall has presented a cheque for £665 to the charity as a result of his year in office.

He chose the society as one of two to benefit from his role because he is aware of the distress caused by the condition after seeing a relative affected by dementia.

A representative of

the Alzheimer's Society welcomed the donation.

He said: "It's great that Cllr Woodall gave his time to support our charity.

"Dementia can happen to anyone and there is currently no cure. But, with the right support, people can live well with dementia."

A UNIVERSITY of Chichester lecturer, novelist and short story writer has been nominated for a major literary award for her latest book.

Alison MacLeod, the professor of contemporary fiction, was shortlisted for the prestigious Edge Hill Short Story Prize for All the Beloved Ghosts.

It is a story collection which The Sunday Times called 'emotionally powerful' and 'impeccably elegant'.

Prof MacLeod is one of just five authors to be shortlisted for this year's award - the only major accolade that recognises excellence in single-authored short fiction collections in the UK and Ireland.

She said: "I'm delighted and honoured. THe short story is one of the most demanding and exhilatering forms of literature, and it's wonderful to see it recognised annually by THe Edge Hill Prize."

A Booker Prize nominee for her past novel Unexploded, Prof MacLeod is one of the founders of the university's BA (Hons), MA and PhD creative writing courses, which have become widely consider among the UK's programmes for creative writing.

Her story, We Are Methodists, has also been selected for the anthology, Best British Short Stories 2018, which was published this month with Salt Publishing. Her latest story, The Gleaning, aired on BBC Radio 4 and featured as a Pick of the Week.

Road is small in length but big in character Thoroughfare continues to host a range of businesses TODAY, looking at Station Road in Bognor Regis, it only appears to be a small section of road that joins others together, being at the end of London Road, before it turns right down to the library.

It is between London Road and Linden Road and it would almost appear to be an afterthought. However, it certainly contains interesting historic buildings, trades and shops.

Like all good roads, it contains a public house, namely THe Station, first opened in 1871 as THe Terminus within seven years of the station being opened. It was originally owned by Arundel brewers Lambert & Norris, who would have been delighted at the possibility of selling their wares further afield, especially in a seaside resort that was beginning to develop. It is believed a local architect, Arthur Smith, who designed the station, also designed the Victoria Hotel in Aldwick Road.

In the Bognor Guide of 1899 is an advertisement for the Stanley Commercial & Temperance Family Hotel, which can be clearly seen in many 1902 scenes of the railway station fire debris. THese premises are now known as Commercial House and occupied by a Chinese doctor and Domino's Pizza.

At the beginning of the 1900s, Station Road would have been a rather quiet residential area, which very soon developed into a very busy and noisy thoroughfare.

THe use of the railway station was to increase quite dramatically with the introduction of public holidays and the increased trade created by the London Sunday School groups and general day-trippers arriving in the town.

By 1910, there was much speculation in the local paper with regard to the increasing ‘nuisance’ being caused by these large groups of day-trippers.

By 1906, another trader, F & E Woods, who were carmen and contractors, were advertising they removed household items, but were also suppliers of chalk, manure, coal and coke alongside their business of supplying road and path making materials, such as flint, beach gravel, sea sand etc.

THeirs would have been a busy and growing business as the town was developing and expanding into the surrounding countryside.

Because of the small size of the town and length of the road, the majority of businesses only advertised in the 1916 guide as being in Station Road without any indication of which number they occupied. We are, therefore, unable to specifically place them.

by building its imposing Depository and its advertisements announced the 'Furniture Depository has been specially built for the storage of furniture on the cubicle system, with electric lift to all floors, is lighted by electricity, and heated by a system of low pressure hot water apparatus'.

THis would obviously be needed for the increasing number of people coming to the area who required the safe retention of their house contents. Note that an extra floor has been added to the original building.

On the corner of Station Road and London Road we today have a 1930s building which has been an estate agents for many years, currently Clarke’s. However, before then, this was the home of Bognor’s first police station.

When this flint built property was demolished a number of railway cottages were also knocked down to be replaced by the ‘modern 1930s’ construction. We can still see today these ten properties with accommodation.

It has always been possible for residents to purchase the majority of their needs in Station Road with a supply of groceries, dairy, confectionary, newsagents and tobacconists.

One of the most memorable shops was Money’s Dairy that was recorded in the 1916 Town Guide as Central Farm Dairy. In 1932, its advertising proudly stated 'We served the King' and continued 'Let us serve you'.

THis would have been during King George V’s stay at Craigweil in 1929. THe shop continued for many years until later into the 20th century, with its distinctive smell of home-made pies, buns and cooked foods.

It has been replaced by Tesco, which continues to offer many of the provisions supplied in this street over the years.

If we take the time to stop and look above the shop fronts it is evident that many of the

facades have remained, as they were first built, and this provides us with a glimpse of a bygone age. By 1962, there was a definite revival taking place in the town and the Civic Trust, which at that time was run by the Bognor Regis Society had a pilot scheme. Its brief was to regenerate the area of Station Road principally with repainting but with a certain amount of detailed alterations to be made to the various premises.

One of the Station Road shopkeepers involved reported 'he had been surprised at the financial saving he had gained through taking part in the scheme'. His shop front was refurbished at about half the price it had cost when previously decorated. THe scheme included the removal of large amounts of clutter and a variety of advertising boards were also to be removed.

THe aim of the work was to provide Station Road with 'colour, harmony, attractiveness and tidiness to an area that was becoming drab and uninviting'. It was the first Civic Trust scheme to be carried out in the town and this joint initiative was watched across the county.

THe town architect at the time provided a view of Station Road when he said: “Station Road presented many problems, because one side of the road has a completely different character from the other.

"THe west side is made up of a group of buildings, each one being completely different from its neighbour and having no sort of harmony or co-ordination at all.

On the east, we have mainly a later type of development, a flat line forming a roof profile rather than an undulating line as on the opposite side. It will need a considerable amount of careful thought to bring harmony and continuity to the street.”

Middleton look to extend unbeaten PostSport run against table topping Brighton MIDDLETON CC will look to extend their unbeaten run to three as the club seek to preserve their Sussex Premier Division status for another season.

Sean Heather's side have picked up their performances in recent weeks, pulling themselves away from the bottom two.

THat run continued with a creditable draw away at East Ginstead last weekend.

With league leaders Brighton & Hove visiting Sea Lane tomorrow (12pm), Middleton know they will need to be at their best if they are to come away with a share of the spoils.

Last weekend's match at East Grinstead will have given them heart.

A solid bowling display led by Matthew Reynolds (4-80) saw the home side restricted to 228-9 off 58 overs. In reply, an unbeaten half-century from overseas player Mahesh Rawat (56*) anchored the innings and ensured Middleton held out for the draw, reaching 190-9 before time was called.

In Division Two, Bognor took the spoils as they defeated Chichester Priory Park to secure a much-needed win.

A fierce display with the ball saw the Regis Oval side dismiss Chi for just 110 after being

put into bat.

West Indian Marquino Mindley (3-18) and Scott Bingham (3-7) were particularly impressive as Priory lost seven wickets for 40 runs. Matthew Bennison top scored with 32.

Bognor then chased down the score with five wickets to spare as an unbeaten 40 from Rob Willway guided them home.

Next up for third-bottom Bognor is a trip to Ansty, who are one point and one place above them. Chichester, meanwhile, welcome league leaders Mayfield to Goodwood, with the visitors winning their last five matches.

Both matches start at 12.30pm.

In Division THree West, fourth-placed Pagham travel to Findon still with an outside shot at winning promotion (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side have lost just once in the past five matches. THat good form continued last weekend when they comfortably defeated an inexperienced West Chiltington & THakeham side at Nyetimber Lane.

Batting first, Hanks' side scored 248 with Richard Bird (55) and Justin Scott (43) adding the bulk of the runs. THe visitors struggled in reply as Gareth Davies took 5 for 11 in a total of 85 to seal a 163-run victory.

STRADIVARIUS is set for another tilt at the Goodwood Cup with the John Gosden trained mount odds on to take the £500,000 Group One race.

THe contest is the first major race of the five-day Qatar Goodwood Festival which gets underway next Tuesday.

Stradivarius won the two-mile race at last year's meet, edging out 2015 and 2016 winner Big Orange. And, after beating French horse Vazirabad by three-quarters of a length in the Group 1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last month, connections believe he could go close again this time round - even if jockey Frankie Dettori will miss the first few days of the meet due to suspension.

Speaking to Sporting Life, assistant trainer THady Gosden said: "Stradivarius's preparation for the Goodwood Cup has been excellent so far. He pulled off a shoe at Ascot so it showed how brave he was to win that day.

"He has come out of the race bouncing and we're looking forward to the Qatar Goodwood

Cup. Stradivarius is an absolute pleasure to be around at home. He is not a big horse, but has a very big heart and is a top-class horse."

Wednesday's highlight is the one-mile Sussex Stakes with the Group One race having a prize pot of £1 million.

Gosden again has the market leader in Without Parole. But punters are likely to be interested in Aidan O'Brien's mount, Gustav Klimt, and course specialist Lightning Spear.

French interest comes in the form of Orbaan.

THursday is Ladies Day with three Group races on the card with the Nassau Stakes the standout race. William Haggas will likely play an important part in the £600,000 Group One race with Urban Fox and Sea of Class both in his stable.

Friday's highlight comes in the form of the King George. Last year's winner, the Charlie Hills-trained Battaash, features among 25 remaining entries while the ante-post favourite for the historic Stewards Cup six mile sprint handicap is Godolphin's Dreamfield.

Old rivals Sidlesham and Bosham usher in the new

Pagham push for promotion PAGHAM joint-manager Tom Simmonds believes his side should be shooting for promotion from the SCFL Premier.

THe Lions made great strides in what was Simmonds and co-manager Richie Hellen's first campaign at the helm.

A third place finish and a cup final was an excellent return for the Nyetimber Lane side, who also managed to score more than 100 league goals for the first time in the club's history.

With Pagham bolstering their attacking ranks, most notably with the addition of George Gaskin and the returning Scott Murfin, Simmonds believes his side are in good shape for the start of the season on August 4.

He said: "THe target at the start of last season managed to improve on the year before and we did achieve that.

"I think it is fair to say that is the aim again. Every competition we enter we want to improve on that.

"If we finish higher than last season then that will be promotion so I think it's fair to see that's something we are looking at."

Pagham continued their

free-scoring ways in preseason with a 4-4 draw against Combined Counties Premier side Crowborough last weekend.

THat was followed by a 3-1 victory over SCFL Division One side Selsey as Gaskin, James THurgar and Lindon Miller scored.

THe Lions round off their pre-season preparations this week when they welcome Wessex Premier side Hamble FC tomorrow (3pm) before a visit from Bostik Premier side Whitehawk on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Simmonds said: "Everything is going well in terms of preparations.

THings are starting to take shape.

"We wanted to try and keep as many as we could from last year and add in a few more in the areas where we thought we could slightly improve.

"You cannot read too much into it [pre-season] but we are pleased with some aspects of our play, particularly with the way we are attacking and going forward as a team."

Pagham start their season with a trip to Peacehaven & Telscombe on August 4 before a home match against Lancing on August 7.

FOR TWO seasons they were the fierce rivals fighting it out at the top of SCFL Division Two. But it's all change for Sidlesham and Bosham as the near neighbours embark on new eras with new men at the helm.

After winning promotion to SCFL Division One last season, Sids were the first to act as they look to consolidate themselves back at step six of the non-league pyramid.

After losing manager Daren Pearce to Selsey, the Recreation Ground side welcomed former Blues boss Steve Bailey in as manager.

Meanwhile the Robins, who finished fifth last term, have welcomed Dennis Hughes in as first team manager.

Dennis comes with a high pedigree and an extensive playing and management CV - starting out as a youth player with Arsenal prior to spells at Leyton Orient, Brighton & Hove Albion and Stevenage Borough.

He will be assisted by former Robins boss Tony Hancock and head coach Danny Mullen.

A club spokesman said: "We're very much looking forward to the forthcoming campaign and wish the new management well in what has been a transitional period for the club over the last few weeks."

Chi shape up well for new year CHICHESTER City manager Miles Rutherford has one goal in his sights this season.

A record-breaking run in the FA Vase, a cup victory and a fifth place finish will not be enough for the determined manager.

After two seasons of progress, the Oaklands Park side look set to be going all out to secure a promotion spot from the SCFL Premier this season.

With two spots to fight for, City will need to hit the ground running and erase some of the inconsistency which has cost them dear in recent years.

But, judging by pre-season results, Rutherford has assembled another competitive side which will be pushing towards the top of the division.

After beating Bostik Premier Worthing and Wick, City suffered their first loss of preseason last weekend against Wessex Premier side Moneyfields losing 2-0.

Among the players to miss that match was new signing Gicu Iordache, who has joined from Broadbridge Heath. THe creative left winger scored eight in the previous two fixtures against Wick and Worthing.

Chi played Sidlesham away last night and continue pre-season tomorrow when they host Wessex Premier side Christchurch (3pm) before rounding off their matches on Tuesday at Oaklands against Woking under23s (7.45pm).

Chi start their SCFL season on August 4 at home to Newhaven (3pm).

THe Chichester City Ladies team are also making good preparations for the new season.

It is the beginning of a new era for the Oaklands Park side as they start life under new manager Aaron Smith.

THe main task for the new man in charge is to ensure Chi continue to thrive in the newly renamed Premier League Southern division.

City kicked off their preparations with a 4-0 victory away at Poole Town, who are in the league below them.

Smith said: "THere were six new players involved who all performed well and integrated well into the team, which I was happy to see.

"We went into this game concentrating on keeping a clean sheet and playing with no fear.

"So to come away from a strong Poole Town side having dominated the game, scored four goals and kept a clean sheet I am very happy."

Next up for Chichester City is a home tie against AFC Bournemouth who won their league last season. THe game will take place at Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm).

Blues boss still has plenty of work to do SELSEY boss Daren Pearce still has plenty of work to do if he is to bring the good times back to the High Street Ground.

THe former Sidlesham man has one aim this season: to improve the club on and off the pitch and try and better last season's ninth place finish in SCFL Division One. Pearce has hit the ground running, bringing in a number of young players to the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium.

He has also set about working with chairman Dave Lee and Dickie Istead in remodelling the youth set-up, introducing a new under-18s side to ensure the club continues to produce high-quality young players.

With a link-up with Stoke City scout and former Brighton & Hove Albion manager

Martin Hinshelwood, the seeds are certainly being sown.

Now Pearce has to get to grips with the first team and pre-season has seen a lot of focus on moulding a new look side.

Friendly defeats to Bostik Premier Worthing, Wessex Premier side Portchester and Combined Counties Premier side Walton & Hersham fail to hide real progress with a squad of young players.

THat continued on Tuesday when the Blues suffered another pre-season defeat this time 3-1 to SCFL Premier side Pagham.

Pearce will be hoping by the time Selsey kick off the new season on August 4 at home to Southwick, that promise will be turned into positive results on the pitch.

Rocks use Robbie's contacts to sign two Pompey players Next Game

SALISBURY (A) Tonight, 7.45pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is turning to youth as he looks to solve the Rocks' scoring woes.

Goals were hard to come by for the Nyewood Lane side last season as the club were relegated from National South at the first time of asking.

With the Bostik Premier season just a fortnight away, Pearce confirmed this week the addition of Portsmouth youngsters Dan Smith and Bradley Lethbridge on seasonlong loans.

Despite their age, both have an eye for goal with Rocks fans getting a good view of what to expect when he pair featured for the League One side in a friendly at Nyewood on Tuesday evening.

Pearce said: "Both Bradley and Dan are very highly thought of within the Portsmouth management structure and we are delighted to welcome them to the club.

"Portsmouth are keen for both players to play regular football at a good level to help them develop so the loans suit all parties in that they can attain game time while we benefit from their talent."

Attacking midfielder Smith, 19, and striker Lethbridge, 17, both started in the 5-1 friendly defeat.

After Jimmy Muitt drew Bognor level in the first half, the League One side's quality started to show - with Adam May (3), Leon Moloney and Smith getting the goals for the visitors in

front of more than 1,200 fans.

Central to the signing of the two Pompey youngsters is the presence of Bognor's new first team coach Robbie Blake.

THe former Wolves striker spent two seasons at Fratton Park and has a good reputation within the Pompey hierarchy.

With Bognor also having a reputation for playing passing possession football, the League One club needed little persuading that their young starlets would be in good hands at Nyewood Lane.

Pearce said: “To have such a relationship with a club of Pompey’s stature says a lot about our club and the trust they have in us.

"We very much look forward to helping the players develop and at the same time boosting our own ambition ahead of the new season.”

THe confirmation of Smith and Letheridge's switch to the Rocks was confirmed after the game on Tuesday.

Both will play a part in the pre-season friendly at Salisbury tonight (7.45pm) and next Friday (August 3) as the Rocks round off their pre-season campaign away at Southern Premier South side Gosport Borough.

THe matches will give Pearce and Blake time to finalise their squad ahead of the first match of the league season at Haringey Borough on August 11.

THe first home match comes three days later against Merstham (7.45pm).

Keeper issue next one to sort FIRST was building a strong core to the side, then it was on to adding a goalscoring threat.

But, with a fortnight to go until Bognor start their Bostik Premier season, there remains a major hole in their side - that of who will be the number one.

THe Nye Camp faithful have been very lucky in recent years, with Dan Lincoln receiving rave reviews in goal.

But, with the start of the new season looming, the former Reading trainee still has not committed his future to the club.

It's no secret that Lincoln wants to find a club closer to his home. And that uncertainty means that Rocks manager Jack Pearce is having to assess his options.

Former Basingstoke keeper Giordano Zabotti has been on trial in recent weeks and played the full 90 minutes against Portsmouth.

Lincoln could return to the Rocks line-up tonight for the trip to Salisbury.

But, with the season getting nearer by the day, Pearce will want to make a decision sooner rather than later.

THis will ensure his defence can bond and form a solid defensive platform from which the Rocks can build on for the rest of the year.

SO WE are back again for another exciting season of football at Nyewood Lane and we're already up and running with pre-season in full swing.

I have really enjoyed the games so far.

Against Brighton & Hove Albion U23s, I thought the lads gave it their all and in the end fully deserved the 2-1 win.

THe appointment of Robbie Blake as coach of the team seems to be a good move and you could see our players were attacking without fear and moving the ball quickly forward against a now Premier League club.

Yes, Brighton fielded a very young side but you could say the same about our team as well. Marley Ridge impressed, as did Sam Rolf in defence, while Chad Field and Corey Heath return to full fitness.

Jack Parkinson was a surprise, coming off the bench like he did and netting his first for the club.

Next up was Horndean. THe Wessex League outfit managed

by Rocks legend Michael Birmingham brought a strong team to Nyewood Lane after the game was switched.

Our first team featured in the first half but wholesale changes at half time saw nine substitutions take place, including another two on the bench! 0-0 at half time and looking fairly even, the changes in the break gave some of our youngsters in the area a chance to shine on the hallowed turf.

In the end it was 3-0 to the visitors against a young Bognor team. It was revealed later that many in that second half were 16 and 17-year-olds who were looking to impress manager Jack Pearce.

It was clear there were one or two who could make the Bostik Premier League level this year - but others, unfortunately, probably wouldn’t be at the standard quite yet.

Given time. though, some years down the line they could make it. Who knows?

On to Portsmouth in the next friendly this past Tuesday night and I have to say the boys held the ball really well at times.

THe passing play orchestrated by Doug Tuck in the middle was a joy to watch.

Unfortunately, mistakes cost us two goals in this match and clinical and confident finishing from an impressive Adam May and others ensured Pompey finished up 5-1 winners.

On the positive side, though it was great to see Jimmy Muitt get back on the scoresheet.

Keeping him at the Lane was crucial this season. He is a real prospect for the club and I hope he scores many goals this season while also avoiding injury.

Getting Dan Smith and Bradley Lethbridge on-loan from our Blue neighbours was a real bonus and can only help our goalscoring prospects this season.

As expected, there have been some departures this summer.

All the best goes to James Crane and Ollie Pearce who have joined Worthing. Long service from both of the players but its a real shame they have left!

My gut feeling is that the management team are going for youth this season and in some cases you just have to let go of some of those more experienced players to give these youngsters a chance.

Dan Beck leaving for Burgess Hill Town was also a hammer blow - another Rocks legend on his way out.

Other players have also departed but now is the time for the likes of Tommy Scutt, Tommy Block and others to show us all what we know they can do!

Unfortunately, I won’t be at the Salisbury City away game tonight but I hope the lads play well and we start to build up momentum for the Gosport Borough game next Friday.
