Minibus charity's shock end PASSENGERS around Bognor Regis have been left confused after a transport charity's shock closure.

It was announced on Wednesday that Sammy Community Transport had made its last journey.

A statement issued by its directors said: "After 47 years serving the community, Sammy Community Transport (incorporating Arun Coordinated Community Transport) is to close its

doors. Recent months have shown a decline in reserves as parts of Sammy showed lower income and indeed in certain areas losses were sustained.

"Rather than struggle on in this environment and eventually letting people down, and also respecting concern that staff would have not known their future, the directors have decided, with much regret, to stop running the organisation as it is."

THe news was greeted with dismay by members of the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street.

Centre manager Sarah Smith said between 15-20 members daily used Sammy. "I don't know how they are going to get in because it has been their lifeline," she said.

Rose Green resident Lily Mann, 88, began to use the charity's vehicles in 1991. "I stopped for a while and started

using them again five years ago. THey bring me to the centre and take me home again on Mondays and Wednesdays," she said.

Her friend, Jean Denn, 82, of Aldwick, said: "I will be isolated terribly if I can't come to the centre on Mondays and Wednesdays. I also use Sammy to go a hospital appointment on Wednesdays and shopping for food on THursdays."

Councillor warns over regeneration SELLING the Bognor Regis coach park for student flats is a wasted opportunity, a town councillor has claimed.

Cllr Steve Goodheart said the London Road site and the adjoining car park should be considered as part of the town's regeneration schemes.

Looking at the location on its own would be a wasted chance for the best regeneration deal for Bognor Regis, he said. THe police station next door should also be included in the sell-off to make a more attractive site to developers and create a modern facility for police.

"THe announcement that the London Road car park and coach park, accessed off Hotham Way, are to be built on with student accommodation once again shows the lack of vision for the bigger picture, said Cllr Goodheart, the Independent councillor for Hotham ward.

"THe car/coach park should not be viewed as a stand-alone site but included within the regeneration plans made for the Regis Centre and Hothamton car park.

"If Arun District Council were to talk to independent professional advisors and investors on the best outcome for the council regarding income from accommodation, they would be told that the three sites should be linked together to enable cross-subsidy.

"THis would enable the local communities to see true regeneration with public realm projects alongside long-term maintenance income and the

three sites supporting each other.

"ADC must remember that the whole reason for regeneration is to support the town and benefit the local communities, not just benefit ADC." Cllr Goodheart has been involved with the 4BR regeneration project among his efforts to improve the town.

He said the London Road, Regis Centre and Hothamton sites would have the maximum potential to benefit Bognor Regis if the activities which took place on them were linked.

THis could be achieved by: * London Road site - a new, smaller police station / a theatre and multipurpose space to replace the Regis Centre / car parking / music venue / bar / restaurant / retail / hotel and walkways looking over Hotham Park * Regis Centre - homes / restaurants / a garden bar / public realm projects / links to the promenade and pedestrianise THe Esplanade * Hothamton car park - new health centre / homes and student flats / retail units / multi-storey car park / multipurpose venue / bar / restaurants and public realm projects Cllr Goodheart added: "THe previous generation of councillors devastated Bognor Regis," he added. "THis generation has a chance to get it right.

"Don't miss this opportunity for Bognor's future. Ambitious plans need strong, visionary and open-minded leaders. It is time for the council leader to step forward or step down."

A BOGNOR REGIS-based charity is in a race against time to raise more than £2,000 to create a new facility.

4Sight Vision Support has launched a crowdfunding page to convert an old indoor swimming pool at its Victoria Drive premises into a large communal space for visually impaired people.

Raising £2,355 on Spacehive.com as SPACE4SIGHT by August 31 will unlock a £15,000 pledge from a funder as part of the £18,000 given to date.

Failing to meet the target will see the pledge disappear.

A spokesman said: "4Sight Vision Support currently does not have a

large room in their Bognor Regis support centre that can comfortably and safely cater for large groups of people. THis puts a limit on what clubs and activities can be offered at the main centre, which 4Sight Vision Support aims to make more accessible and inclusive for social events and activities."

THe new room is set to be used for group work, meetings, tai chi, social clubs and therapies.

THe multi-purpose function room will benefit the other groups based in the Bradbury Centre as well as 4Sight Vision Support.

David beats odds in epic cycle challenge

f David Gerrie after his cycle ride AN ALDWICK grandfather has finished a life-changing challenge for charity.

David Gerrie, 60, completed a 120km cycle ride through Kenya just four years after he suffered a deep vein thrombosis.

He ended up as a patient in a hospital intensive care unit but was able to spend the past six months training for his epic time in the saddle.

He has raised well over £6,000 so far to support children living in poverty in the African country through child development charity Compassion UK. He said taking part in the challenge had restored his confidence.

"I had severe blood clots in both lungs.

My left lung collapsed and I was fighting for my life in hospital," he said.

"I have been slowly recovering since but hadn't done any serious cycling.

THen, in December last year, the doctors

gave me the all-clear to start training."

David travelled out to Kenya for the week-long adventure, dubbed the Muskathlon Challenge, with 55 other race-goers from around the UK. THe event encouraged participants to find sponsors for children or raise funds to support to local initiatives such as building classrooms and toilets.

THose taking part could choose from a half, full or ultra-marathon, 120km cycle or 42km or 63km walk through the communities they were helping.

David and his team-mates made the testing ride - the distance from Bognor Regis to Bournemouth - in 40C-plus heat over uneven terrain.

As well as the cash donations, David secured backing for six children. THey included seven-year-old Kipsurge, who lives in a rural area near Marigat.

THe £25 monthly sponsorship will enable Kipsurge to receive a good quality education and attend a local Compassion project to receive nutritious meals, emotional support and medical attention. He met David and his wife, Caroline, at a Compassion Fun Day and was given a kite by them.

David said: "He was running across the fields, flying the kite - but as I watched, it was almost as if he himself was flying.

"Watching Kipsurge run along with the kite was absolutely magical. A simple toy lifted him out of his harsh environment, even if it was only for a short while. He will play with it until it can't fly anymore."

David is the founding company director of Trade Aid UK and a member of a Littlehampton church. He also met five-year-old Lucy, who lives with her mum and three sisters in a Nairobi slum.

CYCLISTS have celebrated a new Bognor Regis route which has opened up the coast for them.

THe £2m shared pedestrian and cycle path was officially opened yesterday

by West Sussex County Council's leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith.

THe 4.5km direct link along the A259 from Felpham to Climping has proved popular with cyclists and walkers since it came into use last month.

Bognor Cycle Forum member Dr Malcolm Ridley said: "I came to Bognor Regis as a GP in 1970 and I would never cycle along the A259 to Littlehampton.

"I've now done it four or five times in the past two weeks. It's a beautiful, wide, smooth surface."

THe forum's chairman, Dave Barton, said: "THe surface is much better than the road. THere are a few things that could be improved, like more traffic islands halfway across the road, but it is a lot better than having to go through Yapton and Ford which I did before."

Peter Train, the area ranger for the Sustrans sustainability charity, said he had spoken to several people prompted to cycle on the new route.

"THe A259 was one of the most dangerous roads that I have known.

"It's quite straight. THere are a lot of high, fast-driving traffic and it's just of a width that encourages drivers to pass cyclists without having to slow down but without being able to give them much room," he said.

Work on the route started last

September and the finishing touches were put in place last Friday.

THe length of time and the disruption caused to motorists by the works attracted criticism. But Cllr Goldsmith said the new route would boost the area by improving connections along the coast.

"Such paths are great for visitors to the area and this is a perfect link between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. We can all benefit from such cycle routes in so many ways and I am very grateful to our partners for their collaboration to make this scheme a reality."

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said the new path would bring numerous benefits.

THey included helping the environment and boosting the local economy by making it easier for commuters and visitors to get to the two towns.

"We would like to thank road users for their patience while the work was ongoing. Now, we hope both residents and visitors will enjoy the result, which has added significance as it forms part of National Cycle Route 2," he said.

THe new path runs alongside the A259 and was funded by the county council and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.

It was built by Jackson Civil Engineering. THe company has given five bikes to both Bishop Tufnell School in Felpham and Littlehampton Academy to encourage cycling.

` Clock repairs A SITE visit last week marks the beginning of the end to the broken clock above Bognor Regis railway station.

Network Rail's contractors inspected the prominent timepiece to confirm the detailed specifications for the parts needed to get the clock working again. THey also tested and made some adjustments to the station's lightning conductor.

THe work is being carried out for the town's train operator, Southern Railway. One of its spokesmen said: "THe clock at Bognor requires new replacement parts for the mechanism, which dates from the 1930s. THese need to be produced by the specialist repairers, so completion of refurbishment will take another couple of months."

` Country fair TWO DAYS of fun for all the family are on offer in Bognor Regis this weekend. THe latest Hotham Park Country Fair will fill the open space tomorrow and Sunday.

Call to stop more homes A LEADING Aldwick councillor has called for a halt to more housing in the area.

Cllr Lilian Richardson said she hoped approval in principle of large-scale developments at Pagham North, Pagham South and Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted would mean surrounding neighbourhoods were spared from having to find room for yet more homes.

Some 3,700 properties are destined to be built in the locations – which comprise four separate sites – after approval last month of Arun District Council’s local plan land use blueprint. But Arun's preferred large-scale locations across the district will not accommodate all 20,000 homes it has to provide across the 20 years of the local plan until 2031.

Cllr Richardson told Monday’s Aldwick Parish Council meeting it was involved in the process in which Arun’s planning officers were looking to allocate an extra 1,250 homes around the district.

“THat process is just beginning. It is a three-stage process and the hope is that it will be finished by December,” said Cllr Richardson, who chairs the parish council.

“My hope is that those areas (Pagham and North Bersted) which have strategic sites would not be given any more numbers because that would just be too much to bear.”

Some 25 members of the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement attended the meeting to protest against the local plan’s adoption.

been vocal in objecting to the local plan when it was backed by Arun.

He expected an Aldwick councillor to have spoken during the public question time to query the local plan’s cost of more than £2m as well as other matters about the strategic sites.

“THat should have been something that was in your mind. Although Aldwick does not have any developments on strategic sites in its boundaries, the issue is that Aldwick residents are going to be affected through roads, doctors and dentists," he said.

Pam Hickey, PAGAM’s administrator, said the Arun meeting had contained unacceptable behaviour by some of the majority Conservative group towards opposition councillors.

“It was bully boy tactics and the Lib Dems were the butt of some jokes,” she said. Members of the public at the meeting were formally complaining to Arun about the conduct of some of its members.

Another PAGAM member, Giles Binyon, said the housing would be built on top grade farmland just as Brexit made it vital for Britain to grow crops.

Arun’s leader Gillian Brown, and an Aldwick East district councillor, defended the need to adopt the local plan.

“THere are over 200 policies in there like environmental protection policies. Every time we object to a planning application, these are the policies that stand up and we can turn something down. Without these policies, we don’t stand a chance doing that," she said.

CARING students at Felpham Community College ended their year in the classroom by helping refugees.

THe college's student council held a school-wide collection for the charity, Help Refugees.

THis is a British charity which works with refugees across Europe. One of its main projects is based in Calais and northern France where thousands of people, including unaccompanied children, are sleeping rough in inhumane conditions.

Students, parents and cares supported the charity by bringing in items of clothes, toiletries, food and kitchen supplies.

THe collection was delivered by a group

of college staff to the charity in Calais late last month.

Matthieu Cauchy-Duval, an associate assistant headteacher at the college, said: "THe college get involved with numerous charity events throughout the academic year.

"THis appeal was co-ordinated by the student council and the languages department and we have been delighted at the volume of items we have had donated.

"THank you to students, parents and staff for their contributions."

Armed robber is apologetic

AN APOLOGETIC armed robber in Yapton has been urged to hand himself in.

A man carrying a knife entered the Co-operative store in the village's Main Road around 10.55pm last Saturday.

THe suspect threatened three members of staff and stole money from the tills before he apologised to the workers and ran away.

Detective Constable Louise Clark, of Sussex Police's Chichester investigations team, said: "THe three staff members have been left traumatised by the event and support is being provided.

TEMPORARY loos are again due to be installed along Bognor Regis seafront.

THe portable conveniences have been announced as an emergency measure after the promised permanent conveniences failed to arrive.

But the stopgap toilets had failed to arrive by yesterday morning - some three months after the site for the permanent building was cleared by Arun District Council.

THe former location of the foreshore office, opposite Walton Avenue, has since been surrounding by fencing with three banners on it promoting the new £200,000 toilets.

Town councillor Jeanette Warr said: "Our seafront looks like a mish-mash mess during the summer. Now, it is going to look even more like a mish-mash mess with the arrival of the temporary loos."

She said Arun had acted too hastily in knocking down the foreshore office, which contained a loo for disabled people, last spring.

"THe disabled toilets were perfectly acceptable and Arun has put the cart before the horse. THey acted before they knew what was going on.

Town councillor told to quit over Facebook AN UNDER-FIRE Labour councillor in Bognor Regis has been urged to resign from his seat by his group leader.

Cllr Damien Enticott had damaged his role representing Hatherleigh ward and the town council after the remarks appeared on social media, said his fellow Labour councillor, Jan Cosgrove.

Cllr Enticott has already resigned from the Labour party as a result of the row has comments have caused.

In an email to Cllr Enticott on Wednesday night, former town mayor Cllr Cosgrove told him: “…I regret having to do this but I must call on you to resign your seat as councillor immediately.” He said the sentiments expressed had brought disrepute to the town council.

“I am also preparing a complaint which will go to the monitoring officer concerning where I feel you have breached codes and standards.”

THis complaint will be investigated by the officer, an Arun District Council employee, who ensures councillors across the area observe the rules to which they have signed up.

Cllr Enticott, who was elected six months ago, has spent the past week at the centre of a row about comments posted on his Facebook page.

THe remarks described Jews as ‘parasites’ and said some Jews ‘need executing’.

It accused them of drinking blood and sexually assaulting babies.

Cllr Enticott initially denied he had posted the comments. He said his computer lacked a password and had been used without his knowledge by a person in the shared house in the High Street in which he lives.

But earlier posts under his name, which made similar comments against Jews, were

later revealed. THe Labour Party nationally and locally quickly suspended Cllr Enticott and started investigations into the postings.

He responded by resigning on Wednesday.

He was reported by the BBC as apologising for causing offence but said he stood by his comments. He said he was ‘anti-Zionist, notSemitic’ and added: “I never meant to offend the Jewish community…I’d like to apologise if that’s the case for the words I’ve used.”

Mr Enticott has failed to respond to a request by the Post for answers to other questions.

Cllr Cosgrove said Cllr Enticott had badly let down the party at a time when it was under scrutiny for its stance on anti-Semitism.

“Opposition, which I and many others share, to the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands by Israel and the theft of their lands at the hands of Israel, can never excuse the use of material such as you reproduced.

“I find your actions incomprehensible and reprehensible,” he told him.

“You also attempted to shift blame away from yourself. Yes, it is possible that a computer could have been hacked but I understand that you now admit this was not the case,” he said.

Bognor Regis Town Council has announced it will formally look into the matter.

A council spokesman said: “Regarding the alleged anti-Semitic Facebook comments, the town council wishes to state that they do not support such views. THe town council will investigate the allegations further with appropriate actions taken where necessary.”

Town councillors have to abide by a code of conduct when they represent the council.

THe code states councillors are responsible for the content they publish on social media.

New benefit launch latest - see page 12

"At the very least, they should open up the ladies underground toilets. THat's what people ask for when they come to our town council surgeries. People want to know why they are closed.

Arun closed both sets of underground toilets last year because they attracted vandalism and were prone to flooding and put in temporary toilets.

An Arun spokesman said the new toilets were ordered on the agreement they would be installed before the main summer holiday season.

But a manufacturing display encountered by the supplier meant that had not been possible.

THe high quality temporary toilets would stay for the rest of the summer funded by the manufacturer.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said he apologised for the problem.

"THe supplier was one of only a handful of businesses that provide these off-site manufactured public toilet buildings, and they have let us and our thousands of seafront visitors down," he said.

It is still unknown when the permanent toilets will be installed.

FROM page one North Bersted resident Brian Waynam, 83, used Sammy every weekday to visit the centre for at least ten years. He said: "It will be a pain Sammy not being there but I will just have to get round it. I'll get a taxi if I have to."

Statistics at Sammy's last annual meeting last July stated it had 7,235 members the previous month and they travelled 102,152 miles.

Sammy was formed in 1973 when a Bognor Regis businessman, Samuel Jay, left money to buy a minibus.

It absorbed a similar service in Chichester in 2012 and merged with Arun Coordinated Community Transport last year to have nine minibuses and two wheelchair accessible cars.

THey were driven by 30 volunteers and eight paid drivers. Another 30 voluntary drivers used their cars.

THe statement from Sammy said the need to pay staff for office work as well as driving in recent years had pushed some journeys into losses.

Tougher laws had also driven up expenses, coupled with declining grants from councils. New laws which would mean chaperones for trips and a proposed licensing structure for drivers would have created an unacceptable burden.

"It is hoped that smaller localised parts of the roles undertaken will start up again once all is clear," the statement added. "While this will undoubtedly be disappointing news to our many clients, and sponsors, please be assured that we will do everything possible to determine if we can once again rise to the challenge."

Sammy left its North Bersted premises last May for Tangmere and was also based at Ford.

Darci's day in Parliament CIVIC-MINDED student Darci Scott has met the Bognor Regis MP in Parliament.

Nick Gibb wanted to recognise the efforts Darci had made at THe Regis School to help others.

She won the WE Generation Award at the WE Day charity event held at Wembley Arena last March.

Darci was one of just two students in the UK to receive the award in its first year of being set up to recognise the outstanding contribution of young people to good causes in their areas and around the world.

Mr Gibb said: "It was a delight to meet Darci Scott, who is a very articulate young person with a natural sense of civic spiritedness and a concern for others.

"Darci takes a keen interest in current affairs and I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up in the House of Commons herself one day.

"Together with her parents and brother, we went around both houses of Parliament while discussing the charity work that led to Darci winning her award.

"WE Day is a celebration of young people making a difference in their communities and discovering causes they are passionate about."

WE Day is run by the WE charity, a global educational programme which aims to inspire young people to become engaged in local, national and global issues and empower them with the skills to make real change.

WE charity is active in 14,500 schools across the UK and North America and has raised more than £78m for charity after being founded in Canada.

Darci was selected as a Gen WE Day champion for helping to collect 1,600kg of supplies for Bognor Regis Foodbank, as well as for organising an event for 100 primary school students.

Plan to boost sea defences to stop flooding of Elmer homes PROPOSALS to protect hundreds of homes in Elmer from flooding will go on show next week.

THe Environment Agency is staging two exhibitions to promote its plans to improve sea defences in the area.

Its preferred option is a design to better protect 325 properties from flooding and coastal erosion for the next 50 years, with an estimated cost during the period of £6.4m.

THe schemes will be on show from 1pm-6.30pm on August 8 and from 9.30am-11.30am on August 11 at Jubilee Hall, in Elmer Road, Middleton.

Gordon Wilson, the agency's flood and coastal risk manager, said: "Our proposals aim to better protect hundreds of homes in the area at risk of flooding or erosion from the sea.

"We would encourage anyone who is interested to come along to the dropin sessions to talk to the project team and find out more about this scheme."

THe shoreline at Elmer has a range of coastal defences such as the offshore rock breakwaters, or islands, shingle

beaches and rock revetment.

Some of these defences, particularly the shingle beach in front of Elmer Sands Boating and Angling Club, are at risk from being breached by the sea and wave overtopping, especially during storms.

THis means the land behind the defences is at risk from flooding and coastal erosion if they are not improved.

THe Environment Agency would like to extend the existing rock revetment, or rock wall, eastwards just beyond the Elmer Rife for a length of 165m.

It also includes repair work to the existing rock revetment and the addition of shingle to some of the bays along the beach.

THe agency has been working closely with representatives of the landowner, Elmer Sands Ltd, to include local views into the plans where possible.

ARMED forces veterans from Aldwick are taking part in a pilgrimage of remembrance next week.

Nigel Ede and Terry Mullings are to join thousands of others travelling to Europe to take part in the Royal British Legion event.

THe occasion, known as Great Pilgrimage 90, takes place between this Sunday and next THursday and will be one of the largest in the charity's history.

It marks 90 years since the original Royal British Legion pilgrimage on which 11,000 First World War veterans and war widows visited the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended.

Legion members Mr Ede and Mr Mullins will represent the Legion's Aldwick & District branch as its standard bearer and wreath layer.

Vic Bellamy, of the branch, said: "Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together

and bear our standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. "THe Aldwick & District branch looks forward to proudly representing Aldwick and district at the event."

Mr Ede and Mr Mullins will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 pilgrimage before they march along the original route through Ypres to the Menin Gate next Wednesday bearing their standard and wreath.

THey will join more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries such as civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and northern Europe. Once at the Menin Gate, Mr Mullings will lay the branch's wreath.

THe wreath will have a message from the community around the branch and will be on display to the public until the end of this month.

THe sessions are being held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until August 24.

THey will take place from 2pm4pm at the Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane.

THere will be plenty of enjoyment for all ages at a cost of £1 a family at each session. Children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult.

A packed audience of some 100 people delighted in the premiere of Hoodwinked 3 This Time It's Personal.

THe two-and-a-half hour story brought Tim's version of a time-travelling Robin Hood to the big screen.

He is set to follow his triumph with a shorter sequel which focuses on two of the characters, Tuck and John's Excellent Adventures.

He will also study a diploma in music performance and production at Chichester College after having written the songs for the film and the film score.

Tim, 15, of Uppark Way, said: "I have lots of ideas for future projects but my next film will be shorter than Hoodwinked 3."

He gave a speech at his premiere, held

at Bracklesham Barn, along with two of his cast and his mother, Sally Wagter.

"I didn't really picture what the premiere would be like until I got there.

"It was a bigger success than I thought it would be. I was completely stoked by the welcome I got," he said.

Sally said: "It took 18 months to make the film and I knew all the hard work that had gone into it, the difficult moments and the good moments.

"THe premiere was delayed gratification and I kept explaining to everyone involved they would get their moment.

THis was their moment.

"It was the culmination of a lot of hard work, which you can't see when you are watching a film."

Tim led a cast of 20 young people and three adults in Hoodwinked 3. He hired expert help and used professional software to ensure a top quality product.

Colin to make festival rock THOUSANDS of music fans at one of Britain's biggest festivals are set to rock to a Westbourne singer.

Rockin' Colin is appearing this Sunday in the $hit Disco arena of Bestival 2018 in Dorset.

"THere are going to be some 40,000 people there, though I expect the stage I'm on to attract 1,500-2,000 people. It's so great for me," he said.

"I hope to make a big impact with songs by Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis. I might put in some glam rock numbers as well by the likes of Alvin Stardust and Mud. THeir hit Tiger Feet always goes down well."

Rockin' Colin is the stage name of Westbourne man Colin Page, 58, who combines his music with working as a delivery driver for Sainsbury's.

He has been singing mainly rock and roll in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas for about 35 years.

"Rock and roll still sounds raw. It still sounds as good today as it did 60 years ago. It is such a simple sound and so unique," he said.

"As soon as you start messing about with music, it becomes too complicated."

Colin's success led him to become friends with the late great Jerry Lee Lewis and through him with further rock and roll giants like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. He performed Great Balls Of Fire on THe X Factor in front of an audience of 10,000 a few years ago.

Colin has added seventies glam rock to his stage act for the past two years.

He formed Ballroom Blitz and became lead singer of the glam rock outfit.

He said: "I always wanted to start a glam rock band but we don't wear wigs like some of those who play the music tongue in cheek. It's quite hard to sing and tough on your voice. People underestimate bands like Sweet."

Sell-out success of sunshine fete leaves hospital Friends delighted DELIGHTED fundraisers made more than £2,000 an hour to boost Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

THe hospital’s Friends charity took in £6,200-plus at their latest annual fete to beat last year's total of £5,700.

Friends’ chairman Brian Knight said the success of last Saturday’s three-hour crowd-puller was a testament to the hard work of dozens of volunteers and the affection for the hospital.

“We’ve had a wonderful crowd. I would say it’s the best crowd here we have had for a number of years,” he said.

“People do love the hospital. Everybody in Bognor Regis has some association with the hospital.

“It’s a friendly hospital. Everybody is made to feel welcome from the time they drive in and go to reception and on to the out-patients department. Everyone in the hospital does a good job.

“THe weather has also helped. THe rain we had last year has stayed away, though it did rain when we were putting up the stands in the morning.”

Plans to use the proceeds from the fete were yet to be discussed with the hospital’s operator, the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, he said.

But the Friends were thinking of creating a staffroom on the first floor of the main building. THe original idea for the facility about five years ago was overtaken by other projects. Another possibility was to help with an extension to the hospital’s gym.

“THere is no staffroom in the hospital at the moment,” he said. “But both projects would cost a substantial amount of money, in the tens of thousands of pounds.”

THe fete was held in its traditional location in the grounds of the Shripney Road hospital.

Some 20 stalls, as well as food vendors, provided plenty of chances for the hundreds of visitors to spend their money and have fun.

Books, cakes, clothes, a tombola and DVDs were among them. A series of singers provided live entertainment.

Felpham Art Group’s members exhibited a selection of their works.

One helper at the fete had more of the events than most people present. Sister of rheumatology Maggie Walsh has helped out at 33 of them in her 34 years in her role.

She said: “THe fete has been good today. THe tombola has been very successful and we have run out of prizes.

“Fetes can become a little dated and we have to keep ahead of the times.

People are certainly looking for value for money.”

Friends’ tea bar helper Dorothy Gray has just four years’ experience at the fete helping on the book stall but was equally enthusiastic.

She had spent part of her working life in the casualty clinic at the hospital after she had trained at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester.

“I retired from work at a nursing home

and I needed something to do within walking distance of my home,” she said, “and this is just a nice and friendly hospital.

“I volunteer in the tea bar on a THursday morning and help out during holidays and all the patients really like the hospital. THey are very pleased with it.

“We’re always busy at the tea bar and what people especially like about us is that they have a real cup of tea in a china cup.”

On the other side of the fete, the employees of the NHS trust’s wheelchair service were frantically serving up their homemade cake.

THe lemon and lime drizzle variety, the mocha cake and the ginger slices went down a treat with the visitors.

One of those who baked the delights was Jen Chandler. She is pleased to have been working at the hospital for nine years.

She said: “THe fete has been fantastic this year. We have sold out of our homemade cakes.

“THere are eight of us in our team and everyone has baked some cakes, even those who don’t cook very well. But they have all gone down very well.

“THis is our second year at the fete, and much better than last year, and we will definitely be back again next year.”

` New date for fete STRONG wind and rain led organisers of Middleton's annual fete to postpone Sunday's event.

THe popular traditional occasion will be held on August 19 instead at the same times at Shrubbs Field in Elmer Road.

Benefit switch NEARLY 100 Bognor Regis residents have been switched to a controversial new benefit.

THey are claiming universal credit through the town’s Jobcentreplus instead of up to six previous benefits.

THe newcomers to the system in the past month have joined some 219 existing claimants on universal credit.

Jobcentreplus joint manager Karen Brooks said the process had gone smoothly to date.

“Universal credit is a massive transition.

It has taken six benefits and rolled them into one payment. But it is an agile system. It can change every day to take account of a person’s circumstances.

“It has been rolled out really slowly so as not to cause a massive number of people to slip under the net. It is being done in stages rather than the big bang approach which we have been used to.”

She has contacted Stonepillow and the town’s food bank to ensure they have not experienced an influx of individuals affected by the change-over.

Universal credit dates back about three years. Since then, it has applied to single people who live in private rented accommodation or live with their families and friends. After July 4, all new recipients are being placed on universal credit instead of claiming child tax credit, housing benefit, income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income-related employment and support allowance and working tax credit.

Existing claimants will stay on their current benefits until there is a significant change in their circumstances.

Kelly Pritchard, the Jobcentreplus’s service innovation lead, said: “Instead of clients claiming six separate payments,

there is a single payment which is paid on the same day every month as if they were in work rather than the previous fortnightly payments.”

Different elements in that overall payment will change as people’ lives change such as different medical assessments and jobs.

“THe first payment takes five weeks to come through. People can ask for an advance of up to 100 per cent of what their universal credit is going to be. But they have to do that within three weeks of their assessment,” she said.

A link on the universal credit website also instantly calculates how extra work, and other changes, will affect payments to individuals.

She has held information sessions with a host of groups and individuals to explain how the change will affect them.

“THe flexibility is the main thing about universal credit,” she said. “In the past, each benefit would have to be changed individually. THere is also no longer the rigid 16 hours a week cut-off for working which used to affect people on benefits.”

Each client also keeps the same caseworker to ensure continuity.

Mrs Brooks said the changes had become increasingly necessary.

“THe heritage benefits, as we now call them, are outdated. THey are too rigid.

THey were fine when they started but life has moved on and the world has moved on and, therefore, the welfare state has to move on,” added Mrs Brooks.

Previously, some 25-30 new claimants a week would be seen for jobseeker’s allowance. THere are 350-380 existing claimants for the allowance, 500 for income support and a few thousand for employment and support allowance.

'Simplify claiming' A CALL has been made for a new benefit for Bognor Regis area residents to be simplified.

Luca Badioli, the chief executive of Citizens Advice Arun & Chichester, said universal credit was proving too difficult for some people to claim.

Research by the help-point's national organisation showed 48 per cent of claimants found it difficult to provide evidence for health condition and 40 per cent for housing.

Overall, a third of the people who were helped by the charity struggled to provide the evidence needed to finish their application.

"Making an application for universal credit can be complex, and there are many different stages to get through before crossing the finishing line.

"THis new research shows the providing the right paperwork for extra costs is one of the stages which causes the most headaches for people.

"THe government should look at making it easier to provide evidence online and people should also be aware of what's required of them so they receive their payment on time."

THe first two weeks after universal credit began in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas had seen 48 people with an enquiry about it helped by Citizens Advice in the two areas.

Its helpers advise claimants should provide evidence as soon as possible, make sure all ten stages of a claim - some of which have a deadline - are completed to avoid having to start again and ask for help if a problem arises.

Artists' signs of the times ARTISTS have used their creative skills to put Felpham on the map.

Four members of Felpham Art Group have painted illustrations of the area for roadside signs.

THey have been installed at the entrances to the village – on Upper Bognor Road opposite Butlin’s, the B2259 Felpham Way south of the Arun Leisure Centre, the Flansham Lane/Flansham Park junction and the Middleton Road boundary with Middleton.

One of the artists chosen by Felpham Parish Council for the signs was Helen Dungey. THe Rustington resident depicted Blake’s Cottage, St Mary’s Church, yachts sailing off the shore and yellow rays from the angel wings in the church’s Blake memorial window.

“It’s wonderful to have my sign being seen by so many people each day. I am very pleased with the finished result,” she said. “It looks fantastic. THe sign has been really well done. It certainly does justice to my design.”

A former library worker, she has been a member of the art group for some five years and has been concentrating on painting for 15 years.

She said: “I like the creative process and the challenges that are involved. THe signs were a different sort of challenge and that’s why I wanted to get involved.”

THe parish council has been seeking to provide the gateway signs for more than two years. THe project has cost a few thousand pounds.

Its vice-chairman, Cllr Gloria Moss,

said: “THe signs define the shape of Felpham for the first time so that people know where its boundaries are.

“We have had to get planning permission and then permission from highways officers for the signs but everyone has been very helpful. I was proud to lead this project. Felpham Art Group was the ideal image creators.”

Art group chairman Terry Collins said: “We are honoured to be involved in a project like this. THe group wants to be involved in the community and this seemed like a very opportune and memorable project to do. THe way the signs have been produced is terrific.”

Nine members of the group’s 125 entered their designs, he said. THe others who were chosen were Phil King (Felpham/Middleton boundary, pictured above right), Reginald Marlow (B2259) and Graham Goll (Flansham Lane).

Cllr Mrs Moss thanked West Sussex County Council highways officer Ben Whiffin, Tommy THompson, Bill Matthews, Anthony Ellis and John Taylor for their help with the project.

NEW CHANGING facilities have been installed by the Aldingbourne Trust to enable families to enjoy a day out together.

THe facilities at its country centre are suitable for anyone with a disability to use.

THey form part of its multi-million pound new building at the centre north of the A27.

Called Changing Places, it has a height adjustable changing bench, a tracking hoist system, enough space for a disabled person and two carers and a non-slip floor among other features.

Mum Sarah Gooderham said: "In the past, we have only been able to able a spend a morning in certain places because of a lack of changing facilities.

"THis has made us feel rather guilty when it comes to having to refuse my able-bodied son to stay and enjoy the rest of the day.

"THis is a huge thing many people just don't understand."

THe new building also boasts a cafe, shop and conference facilities.

NO OBJECTION has been raised by Arun District Council to Network Rail's plan to install a new building next to the Yapton level crossing.

THe relocatable equipment building is part of the rail network owner's plans for a £4m upgrade of the site between North End Road and Yapton Lane this winter.

THe current crossing with automatic half-barrier gates will be replaced with full barriers.

Show takes audience back to the Nineties TIME-TRAVELLING student performers took their audiences back to the Nineties in a Bognor Regis school's show.

THe cast of Popstars The 90s Musical wowed their guests during a week of shows at THe Regis School as the summer term ended.

THey staged four all-action shows of singing and dancing over three days. THese included three evening performances and a matinee to primary schools in the town.

Ken Pritchard, one of the school's

governors, told them: "THanks to you and all of your colleagues and students who put on such a very, very enjoyable first night of this summer's production Popstars.

"I thought that it was first rate. I've seen a lot of the performances over the years and I don't think I've seen a better one. It really was very good indeed."

Four months of rehearsals went into the creating the slickly-directed show.

THe cast worked tirelessly on perfecting their groovy dance moves and wicked

vocals and brought the decade to life to ensure most of those in the audience had plenty to reminisce about with memories of dial-up internet connections, scrunchie hair accessories and fantastic pop songs.

COLLEGE leader Shelagh Legrave has told the House of Lords about the importance of international students to the UK. Shelagh was among the industry leaders invited to speak to politicans.

She is chief executive of the Chichester College Group, which has strong global links, with more than 1,000 students from 50-plus countries who study there every year.

She highlighted to the Lords the students could bring real advantages to the college's other students as well as exposing learners who lived in the area to different cultures and the world beyond their doorsteps.

She said afterwards: "THere are enormous benefits to local students as they study alongside their international classmates.

Surgeon's skills come in handy Chichester Hospital on a patient from Portsmouth in the second phase of an international trial.

THe procedure has been designed to treat those who suffer from arthritis in the thumb. A Cartiva implant is a synthetic cartilage implant which is firm buy slightly compressible and slips easily across the joint surface.

It is inserted into the base of the bone, similar to a rubber at the end of a pencil. THe implant reduces friction between bones caused by the breakdown of cartilage through prolonged arthritis.

Mr Sauve said the implant was an improvement on the previous treatment, called a trapeziectomy, when a small bone was removed from the base of the thumb.

THe implant had been proved to increase grip strength by 150 per cent compared to 15 per cent in the previous treatment.

Gold standard is met by young adventurers ADVENTUROUS young people from across West Sussex have struck gold.

THe 99 young people were presented with their gold Duke of Edinburgh awards at a special ceremony.

THe occasion at the Hilton Avisford Park hotel in Walberton was attended by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Caroline Nicholls, and Susan Pyper, the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex.

THe gold award is the highest of the three awards in the scheme.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for

children's services, said afterwards: "I took great pleasure in seeing some of the young people who completed their gold award this year and hearing about their challenges and also how much fun and satisfaction they got out of it.

"THe DofE is a fantastic opportunity of what young people can achieve with a bit of hard work and enthusiasm, and I am very grateful to our council's team who do such a great job delivering the scheme."

THose at the ceremony took between 18 months and two years to complete all five of the required sections of the gold award.

THey spent their free time volunteering, undertook a physical activity, went out on an expedition and learned a new skill.

For the Gold award, participants also had to spend at least five days away with a group to develop their communication and teamwork skills. Some of the award winners travelled to Tanzania to help to improve a school, others worked in South Africa and some joined a project to restore the Wey and Arun Canal.

At the ceremony, Cllr Hillier received the licence to continue to deliver the award for three more years.

How to avoid headaches ruining your way of life SO YOU have just discovered that boxed wine and cheap vodka don’t necessarily mix well, and you’ve got the vicious headache to prove it. Headaches aren’t always party-aftermath related, but they are always a bummer, and they’re also unfortunately very common. It’s estimated that about half of adults worldwide have had a headache in the last year, and 30 per cent of those believed they had suffered a migraine.

Not only is it annoying, but it can also be potentially dangerous. Studies suggest that headache disorders (including migraines) are the third highest cause of disability worldwide due to their significant impact on quality of life and the financial cost of being unable to work. While sometimes the cause is environmental or physiological, you should also consider that diet may play a vital role.

Here are the top foods to avoid or load up on, to ease the pain.

Ah yes, take away the morning coffee and get ready for a pounder. People with the highest intake of caffeine (more than 540 mg per day) were 10 per cent more likely to get headaches and migraines. To avoid the nasty effect, experts recommend limiting your intake to no more than 400-500 mg/ day (about four cups of coffee, which is still pretty generous!), and more importantly, being consistent in your intake. In other words, don’t go on a coffee binge on Saturday morning, only to go cold turkey in the days to follow.

Artificial sweeteners, particularly the superpopular aspartame, may increase the risk of migraine headaches and reduce the percentage of days subjects were headache free. Apparently, calorie-free doesn’t necessarily mean pain-free, so try cutting back on the bubbly stuff.

Aged cheese Feeling the pressure after a fancy cheese plate? You may not be alone. THe process of fermentation, which is key in the production of cheeses like blue, cheddar, Parmesan, and Camembert, increases the levels of tyramine and phenylethylamine amino acids in food.

Try ricotta, cream cheese, farmer cheese, cottage cheese, or American instead for a lower tyramine option.

Processed meat We hear the word “nitrates” all the time in the context of chronic disease, but it seems they might not be so kind to our heads, either. Common food preservatives found in processed foods like hot dogs, sausage, and cold cuts may be linked to migraines in some populations. It seems that the presence of nitrate, nitrite, and nitric oxide reductase genes related to the composition of gut bacteria is responsible for determining who

suffers and who doesn’t.

Best foods for headaches: Water So it’s not technically a food, but there’s a reason water tastes so good when you’re not feeling your best. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of headaches in general, so it makes sense that getting your eight glasses a day may help. You can also help meet your hydration needs by fitting plenty of fruits and veggies with a high water content into your diet. Cucumbers, spinach, watermelon, and berries can all help quench your thirst and supply a range of important vitamins and minerals to keep headaches at bay.

Low-sodium foods One easy way to cut back? Avoid those processed foods and meats, which are also rich in those potentially problematic nitrates.

Leafy greens Yep, another win for kale. Leafy greens, like kale, spinach, and chard, are loaded with the B vitamin folate, which may play a unique role in the risk of headaches. In addition to being high in folate, leafy greens are an excellent source of magnesium. A low level of this essential mineral may be to blame for headache symptoms, making it even more important to get in your daily dose of greens.

Almonds Migraine sufferers tend to have lower levels of serum magnesium, and almonds are one of the greatest (and tastiest) sources to meet your needs. Try supplementing with 600 mg of magnesium each day to see if it reduces the frequency of migraines. While you may need a supplement, I would suggest trying a foodfirst approach, and if you’re not into almonds, try leafy greens, seafood, pulses, and other nuts and seeds.

If you’re suffering from consistent headaches or migraines, I recommend making a journal and tracking what you eat before a migraine attack to determine which of these foods are hurting (or helping) your pain.

Preventing headaches can also extend beyond what you’re putting on your plate. In addition to switching up your diet, remember to get plenty of regular physical activity, set a consistent sleep schedule, and minimise your stress levels.

LIDL did I know that it could rain this month and actually did rain or that the end of July would herald Lidl's Wine Tour, so off I duly headed in search of good buys.

In terms of white wines, I steered away from the cheaper ones and sought quality at a reasonable price (circa £7 to £8).

For £6.99, I opted initially for a 2017 Les Figuerettes Picpoul de Pinet - an inspired selection - as it turned out to be characterful, pear-scented, sporting tangy lemon freshness with a touch of salinity and a wine that is a great accompaniment to any seafood concoction!

Green-gold in the glass, herby notes en bouche and crisp acidity characterise this rather splendid white wine considering the pecuniary outlay!

My final white wine choice was that of a 2016 Hans Lang (not Fritz) Rheingau Riesling priced at a lofty £8.99, but undoubtedly my white wine of the week.

THis slick number is classic dryish German Riesling exuding delectable juicy lime fruit on the palate with great balance and a lingering finish - one I wholeheartedly commend to you!

It was now time for a rosé and the 2017 Domaine Saint Pierre Gris Pays D'Oc from the Languedoc region jumped out at me being priced at just £4.99.

Languedoc rosés are up and coming and this medium-dry rosé is salmon pink in colour and has aromas of forest strawberries and is eminently quaffable and one I recommend not to overchill.

In terms of red wines, two in particular stood out with the 2016 Corbières, again from the Languedoc area, being most competitively priced at a mere £4.99 and proving to be decidedly rustic, fruity, bramble-scented with a good dry aftertaste and, in my humble opinion, a veritable crowd pleaser and one to stock up on for parties.

My red wine of the week, however , and

my final selection was a 2014 Squinzano Riserva from Puglia of Italian provenance on sale extraordinarily for just £5.99.

THis enchanting wine has fleshy, dark red fruit, some spice and good grip and

comes from the Negroamaro grape in Southern Italy and tastes sun-baked and would be perfect for barbecues as it pairs well with steak and sausages - one for Italian red wine aficionados. Arrivederci!

Community News & Views WE ARE celebrating 40 years of the Aldingbourne Trust.

THe trust is an enterprising and award-winning charity based in West Sussex that really engages with the people we support, visitors and supporters, enabling people with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else.

In 1978, Mavis Miles, Susan Evershed & Paddy Whiteside all had a similar issue - their sons were at Lufton Manor, near Yeovil - a Mencap rural training unit for boys in their last two years of schooling.

With no suitable funding or workplace opportunities available, they made the heroic decision to 'go it alone' despite having no experience of training or horticulture.

At the time, Surrey Health Authority was using Aldingbourne House as a 60-bed holiday home for patients with a learning disability and site had plenty of land. Mavis contacted the authority and it agreed to lease 15 acres of land to the parents for 12 years.

Paddy Whiteside became chairman of the new charity, Aldingbourne Country Centre, and Frank Harfield, who was a member of Chichester Lions, joined to oversee its finances and accounting. With support from Chichester Lions, Mencap, the round table, the Basil Shippam Trust and West Sussex County Council, the Charity was formed.

Planning approval for the centre was granted on October 4, 1978, and on December 4, 1978, manager David Booth and the first five trainees - Robert Miles, Barnaby Evershed, Paul Dunne, Graeme Bradford and Ian Bant took possession of the site under a blanket of snow!

In 1979, Len Dixey, a self-employed builder and then local Mencap treasurer, visited the site to advise on a trench being dug to access mains water from the A27.

During that visit, Len was persuaded to join the team and he stayed until his retirement in 2006.

Sir, My husband and I are very sad to hear that the Richmond Arms in Bognor Regis (Post, July 13) is about to be demolished for housing.

We were licensees of the Richmond Arms, pictured above, in 1984 and have many happy, fond and fun memories of our time there.

THe reason we are writing is about one memory which still makes us laugh today.

We had only been in the Richmond for two weeks when we had a visit from Mr Magee of Arun District Council's health and safety department.

He was holding his business card in his hand, he opened the doors of the bottle and jug bar - and promptly fell through the floor. THe only words he said from his reduced height were YOU'RE SHUT! Before the pub was refurbished, and with a

I can remember doing the washing-up at the sink which overlooks the railway line and all my plates in the rack would move forward and the pictures on the wall in the living room would move slightly as the trains went into Bognor Regis.

It's funny what you remember about the good old days. We are both 76 now, so have plenty of time to reflect.

Sir, I STRONGLY disagree with Cllr R Bower (East Preston) about the housing proposed in Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted.

THis housing is not even needed, it will not help anyone on the housing list as the cost will be ÂŁ400,000 plus. Of course, we know the developer will say some cheaper housing will be built - but not much as we all know from past projects and this will still be too expensive for local people.

THere is no employment for people if they move into the area.

Also, there is no infrastructure to cope with this influx.

With even more building in Pagham, the increase in vehicles will put 8,000 more vehicles on Chalcraft Lane and the surrounding area. Chalcraft Lane is gridlocked morning and evening now.

Ambulances will not be able to reach patients, fire crews will not get out as they should. It will be chaos.

Cllr G Brown (Aldwick E) says all decisions are made on evidence, not speculation. Well, the evidence is 8,000 more vehicles on the road, 5,000-plus people moving into an area with no real employment, tragic loss of farmland which is needed now more than ever, no infrastructure to cater for this increase in population, and huge amounts of concrete causing more flooding and sewage back up problems which are all well known in the area. THis is the evidence.

THe speculation is the Church Commissioners will make huge sums of money from land sales, that are currently farmland and helping the environment.

Arun District Council will make huge sums in rates - your money which will now pay for the crazy amount spent on getting the housing plans through. THe builders will make money but everyone is entitled to make a living, just not at the expense of the local people and the environment.

THese decisions are being taken by people who do not even live in Bognor and certainly should not be telling us what is needed in Bersted. I think it's time to bring democracy back and give Bognor its own council again with people elected who have a real interest in the area and local environment.

So, when the elections come next year, take care who you vote for. Make sure it's councillors who will put residents' wishes at the top of the list not what government and ADC want. It is also this government pushing the housing, so maybe we need some new MPs as well.

THe Corporation of Worthing College has selected the Chichester College Group as its preferred merger partner.

THis decision was reached after a robust selection and procurement process. THe merger should be completed by the end of March, 2019.

Paul Amoo, chairman of governors at Worthing College, said: "THis new partnership is excellent news for our college and will enable us to deliver our vision and mission to provide Worthing with an academic college that inspires, builds confidence and prepares students for the life they want to live."

Worthing College principal Paul Riley, pictured above, said: "I believe this merger is in the very best interests of staff, students and the wider community we serve. It will enable us to enhance our existing student support services to provide wrap around pastoral care for all of our students."

Visitors always like to be beside the seaside Holidays and excursions began to be popular when bank holidays began in 1871 I THOUGHT I would look at seaside events of the past. It is interesting to see how things have changed, both in the photography styles and activities pursued by both residents and visitors.

THe earliest known guide for Bognor, ‘Origin & Description of Bognor or Hothampton,’ was published in 1807 by JB Davis.

In this, he describes 'the smoothness of the sand reminds the valetudinarian of a velvet carpet, and invitingly draws him to the seaside, while the straight line of the coast, and its gentle slope into the Channel, enable him to enjoy his ride or walk, even at the reflux of the tide, without the least risk of surprise or unexpected interruption from the waves' - an idyllic view from a bygone age.

With the arrival of the railway to the town in 1864, coupled with the new Bank Holiday Act, with the first bank holiday on August 4, 1871, millions of people became holidaymakers and started to explore the coasts. One-day excursions began to become popular.

By 1887, the town was advertising Bognor as a watering place. THe town's council held meetings to suggest ways of encouraging some of the titled classes to come for a holiday, to enhance the standing of the area.

Photographs of the area were on display at numerous railway stations to try and attract

visitors.

THis obviously worked, as by 1907, the groups coming into the town by means of these railway excursions became so large the council had numerous meetings to consider the possibility of asking the railway companies to discontinue day excursions, especially during August.

THese discussions continued for a number of years. While the general public are not always made aware of the numbers involved, I have acquired a record of railway statistics from 1913. It was reported on Wednesday, July 9, that 4,350 visitors arrived, on THursday, July 10, it was 2,250 and on Friday, July 11, a further 1,179 visitors arrived.

THe population of the town at that time was about 8,500 and it is interesting and to surmise what effect this influx had on the town. Just before the First World War it was reported that, over the Easter period, there was insufficient space on the trains for all those wishing to travel and some were left behind!

Residents and visitors alike have always enjoyed a large range of seaside entertainment. THe photograph of the group in their beached boat shows children, mothers and perhaps the nanny allowing us to believe this group could have arrived

for Goodwood Races. THe men would travel down just for the races, leaving women and children to entertain themselves, possibly for as long as a month. It is interesting to see the children playing in their woollen costumes - a far cry from today’s swimmers.

THe town became known worldwide in 1929 with the arrival of King George V who spent 13 weeks recuperating in Aldwick. From that time the advertising slogan of the town changed dramatically and it was promoted as the 'Royal Key to Health' with its distinctive 'Key' logo, which was used on all publicity.

THis symbol was even used by Arun District Council in 1976 as the base for its logo, although the theme was then 'Sun, Sea and Sussex Countryside'.

After the austerity of the war years, from the 1950s, the town was well advertised and thousands of its visitors would send home the obligatory postcard telling of their enjoyment and showing pictures of busy beach scenes to those at home.

THe town holiday guides in that decades proclaimed the area was good for health, with its 'sunshine, sea breezes and tonic air'.

In the 1950s and 60s, people were still happy to enjoy themselves, without too much prepared entertainment.

By 1960 a major event in the town changed many things with the arrival of Butlin’s as a holiday destination and nearly 9,000 visitors a week. THose holidaymakers came because of the entertainment programme within Butlin’s and its seafront location.

As we moved through the 20th century, holiday styles changed considerably. Holidays progressed from the two weeks at the seaside

to holidays abroad with the advent of cheaper flights and increased holiday accommodation abroad. For many, weekend breaks became part of the new style of holidays.

In the early years, the promenade was used as just that, a place to promenade up and down, to be seen and to see who else was on holiday. THe promenade itself was considered sufficient entertainment.

THis area is now used for entertainment purposes, trampolines, rides and land trains to encourage children and their parents to stay, enjoy the beach and other features.

Bandstands were also popular, principally with the visiting military bands who would entertain the crowds. However, those bands are fewer and now only play at major events, sadly for the small resorts and their visitors.

THere is also now only one theatre.

Visitors today are more likely to be enjoying their own pursuits, such as wind surfing, sailing and jetskis - activities that suit today’s seafront.

Television reports expound the virtues of the town, although advertisements and now the internet are playing a major role in attracting visitors. THroughout the years and through all the changes seen in Bognor Regis, some things have remained constant, namely the beach and climate.

THe town is still proud of its high position in the annual sunshine league, which is an important part of its popularity in comparison with holidays now available around the world.

During the summer, many special events are held to encourage visitors and seafront businesses continue to serve their changing tastes.

Volunteer Befriender (Bognor Regis) – The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship (CSRF)

The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship aims to help retired civil servants through friendship and support to enjoy a better and more fulfilling retirement. They offer different services; befriending schemes, network of community groups, information and signposting. They are looking for volunteers to visit isolated older people for a social call - a chat over a cuppa. Visitors generously give up their time to help reduce loneliness in later life. They offer training and reimburse travel costs. No qualifications are required, although they will ask for references and volunteers have to be over 18.

They ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months visiting either weekly, fortnightly or monthly, by arrangement.

Fundraiser – The Phoenix Snak Shak Ltd

The Phoenix Snak Shak was set up for the benefit of the young people in the Manhood peninsula area; especially, but not exclusively, in contact with existing youth provisions so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved. It is not a youth club with organised activities, but somewhere more casual for young people to meet with their friends. Costprice food and drinks and free cakes are available and it is open Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 9:30pm. Someone is needed to help raise funds to keep the Snak Shak running. This will involve some computer skills to complete applications for grants. Only a few hours per week should be necessary in order to bring in the money required. Some training can be arranged.

Mencap are looking for volunteers to join their Visiting Service, an empowering service to people with a learning disability, after their parents have passed away. You would need to volunteer around six times a year in your own time to support people to enjoy the activities they love. This could be anything from staying in for a cuppa and cake, to going on day trips and outings. Volunteers receive induction and ongoing support from the volunteering team, plus expenses and mileage. The times required can be flexible to your availability - you will be able to volunteer as and when you are available; this could include some weekends and evenings.

You will make 6 visits per year, and we would hope that would be able to volunteer for at least 1 year.

Slumping Priory Park need a win PostSport as relegation fears start to grow CHICHESTER Priory Park are out to break the slump as they look to secure their Sussex Division Two status for another year.

Matthew Geffen's side started life back in the county's second tier promisingly, with the side looking up rather than down.

But a poor run of just one win in five has seen Chi drop down the table. And, with just five games to go, Priory now are just a couple of defeats away from slipping into the relegation zone.

Next for Chi is a trip to Haywards Heath tomorrow (12.30pm) to play a side who are third but who have been on just as poor a run as Geffen's XI. Priory will need to be better than last weekend when they could not match league leaders Mayfield.

After winning the toss at Goodwood and choosing to field, Chi's bowlers were unable to make inroads, held up by an excellent third wicket partnership by Robert Sharma (50) and Harry Lloyd (98*). THe visitors eventually reached 200 for eight before declaring.

In reply, only Will Futcher (60) stood up to the Mayfield bowlers as Priory were bowled out for 136 to chalk up a 64 run loss.

Fellow Division Two side Bognor Regis sit one place below Chichester in the tenteam division after a four-wicket win over relegation-threatened Ansty.

Two wickets each for Marquino Mindley, Josh Sargeant, Joel Baker and Scott Bingham restricted the home side to 195 for 8.

In reply, Bognor skipper Ryan Maskell led from the front, hitting an excellent unbeaten century (126*) to guide Regis home with plenty to spare.

Next up for Bognor is a home match against second-placed THree Bridges (12.30pm), who have not lost in five.

In Division THree West, Pagham will continue their outside shot at promotion on the road when they play to second-bottom Slinfold (12.30pm).

THe Nyetimber Lane side are now second and within touching distance of leaders Goring after a comfortable six wicket victory over Findon. An excellent bowling display from Gareth Davies (5-28) and Rico Webb (439) restricted the visitors to 138.

Pagham then passed the target with plenty to spare as Jack Stannard (30), Justin Scott (24*) and Ryan Barratt (39*) contributed.

DARTS: Micky Rowland was in inspired form throwing just 32 darts as he helped fire Friary Z to a comfortable victory over Friary D in Division One of the Bognor Summer Darts League.

Rowland's performance, which included a 180, earned him a 31 dart average and was the standout performance of week 11.

With two matches of the season to go, Friary Z have wrapped up the Division One title, sitting more than 30 legs clear at the top.

THe race for the Division Two title is a lot closer with BRSA Ravens and Aldwick Legion being separated by just one leg.

With Royal Oak a further six behind, the race is set to go down to the line.

In Division THree, it is QE2 Devils' crown to lose as they sit 13 points in front of their nearest challengers Newtown Clubbers.

MIDDLETON CC will look to capitalise on their best performance of the season as they continue to put breathing space between themselves and the Sussex Premier Division drop-zone.

Sean Heather's side welcome Preston Nomads to Sea Lane tomorrow (12pm) looking to extend their unbeaten run to four.

THat good stretch has come at exactly the right time for Middleton, with two wins and a draw in the past three weeks lifting them up to seventh in the ten team league.

With more than 50 points between Heather's side and the drop-zone, and just five games left of the season, one further win should be enough to seal Middleton's place in the top league in Sussex for another year.

THe Sea Lane spectators were treated to the best performance of the campaign last weekend when league leaders Brighton & Hove suffered just their third defeat of the season.

Middleton's 24-run victory was no mean feat considering the visitors' side featured two Sussex CC players in Luke Wells and Matt

Machan.

But, after winning the toss and electing to bat, Heather's side produced a composed performance to put a good score on the board.

Josh Wood (21) and Matthew Reynolds (60) set the platform at the top of the innings before Reynolds and overseas player Mahesh Rawat (53) put on 85 for the second wicket.

Patrick Colvin then injected some real momentum into the innings, smashing 60 off 54 balls to push Middleton over the 200 mark.

After losing a number of wickets as the looked to push on, Heather's side eventually declared on 230 for 8, giving themselves a good target to defend.

With the ball, the Middleton attack clearly had their tails up.

Wells was dismissed early for just six, as Heather took the first of five catches off the bowling of Craig Terry. Craig Fowle (4-69) and Josh Wood (4-20) then shared the remaining wickets as Middleton wrapped up a memorable win.

Lions boss warns fight for top two will be as tough as ever

Tennis finals day a big hit BOGNOR Lawn Tennis Club served up a day of fierce friendly competition for the annual finals day.

THe ladies singles started the matches with newcomer to the club Pippa Holliday playing against Stella Smith.

Pippa won the first five games, giving her a strong and early lead, winning the first set.

However, Stella fought back to win the second set and took an initial lead in the third.

Pippa came back strongly and won the match 6-1 2-6 6 -3 THe men's singles was a father/son match and a repeat of last year’s final with six time winner Oli Callingham taking on father Robert.

It was a fast moving match with hard-hitting strokes by both players but Oli’s superior striking of the ball won through, taking his seventh crown with a 6-1 6-2 win.

THe ladies doubles was a very competitive match between Jean Muglestone and Maree Loversidge against Stella Smith and Patti Francis-Kerr.

Jean and Maree raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set but Stella and Patti clawed it back to 3-3, despite Stella having played a three set singles match just 30 minutes previously.

THe set continued to and fro before Jean and Maree took it 7-5. THe second set was similarly competitive but once again Jean and Maree took it 6-4, giving them the match too.

Rick West and Cyril Penn took on Keith Savage and Neil O’Boyle in the men’s doubles.

THe former were quick to dominate and won the first set 6-2. THe game continued much the same into the second set with a repeated score of the first, making West and Penn the winners, 6-2 6-2.

THe draw for partners' final this year threw up an all mens’ match with Malcolm Ridley and Robin Tyler taking on Barney Ragless and Paul Woodwood, with the former winning the match 7-5 6-1.

In the veterans match, Jean Muglestone took to the court again with her partner Paul May and were too good for Carol Jones and Neil O’Boyle.

THe last match of the day was a closely contested mixed doubles between husband and wife Rick and Louise West and Patti Francis-Kerr and Gary Leadston. In a match that could have gone either way, both sets went to 5-5 before Patti and Gary pulled away to seal a 7-5 7-5 win.

PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds believes competition will be as fierce as ever as the Lions kick off their SCFL Premier campaign tomorrow.

A trip to Peacehaven & Telscombe (3pm) is first up for the Nyetimber Lane side as they look to go one better than the third place finish last time out.

Pagham will then make their home bow just a few days later when they welcome Lancing to the Lane on Tuesday (7.30pm).

With the top two going up into the Bostik South, the Lions know competition for those spots will tough.

Simmonds, who will be in the dug out with Richie Hellen for the second year, said: "Chichester will be a good side and Saltdean are putting together a good team, plus there is normally a surprise package such as one of those who have come into the league, so I think it will be as tight as ever at the top."

Pagham finished their pre-season preparations with a feisty 2-1 loss to Wessex Premier side Hamble last weekend.

THat was followed by a spirited showing against Bostik Premier Whitehawk on Tuesday, which resulted in a 4-3 loss.

City host Dockers for opener

CHICHESTER City will face-off against old rivals Newhaven when they kick-off their SCFL Premier season tomorrow.

Miles Rutherford's side welcome the Dockers to Oaklands Park (3pm) knowing that the two sides have a plenty of shared history in recent years.

Cup finals and potential league deciders have been played out between Chi and Newhaven with goals a plenty normally a feature of previous fixtures.

And Rutherford knows that, if his side are to achieve their goal of promotion, they need to

get off to a strong start.

Chi will then follow up the Newhaven match with a trip to Hassocks on Tuesday (7.45pm), a team that flirted with relegation last year.

Rutherford’s side rounded off their preseason fixtures with a 4-1 victory at home to Wessex Division One side Christchurch last weekend to lift the Steve Barnard Memorial Trophy for the third year running.

THat was followed by a 3-1 win against Woking under-23s on Tuesday night.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey start their season with a home match against Southwick tomorrow (3pm).

It's been a summer of change at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium with Daren Pearce coming in as manager.

A number of new additions have been made to the first team squad as Selsey turn to youth in their bid to improve on last season's ninth place finish.

Southwick finished bottom of the league last year and had to receive a reprieve to stay in the division - but Pearce will warn his side against complacency and hope Selsey can match last season's fast start which saw them win their first five matches.

THe Blues finished their pre-season with a resounding 9-0 win against SCFL Division Two side Bosham. Hat-tricks from Harry Gregory, Callum Dowdell and Ryan Morey secured the victory.

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham finished their pre-season with a 2-2 draw against Rustington.

THe Sids will play their first competitive match under Steve Bailey with a home match against Mile Oak (3pm).

It will be the first time in three seasons that Sids have played at Division One level and retaining their league position will be the obvious aim for the new manager.

Oxford first up for Smith's Chi Ladies CHICHESTER City Ladies will face some old foes and some new faces when they get their FA Women's National League South underway in a fortnight's time.

Five new faces enter the foray into the newly-renamed third tier of women's football - and Chi will meet four of them within the opening six matches.

Oxford United are first up at Oaklands Park when the season starts on Sunday, August 19 (2pm). Chi will then head to newly promoted Plymouth Argyle and Milton Keynes Dons for the first away tests for Aaron Smith's side.

Two midweek fixtures sit within the lineup against fellow south coasters Portsmouth FC Women on September 12 (home) and February 13 (away). Coventry United will

come to Oaklands in the first six league fixtures, before Chi head to recentlypromoted Loughborough Foxes.

THe season is expected to end on Sunday, May 5, with a trip to Gillingham Ladies and the final home game of the season in April will be against Watford FC Ladies.

Chi continue their pre-season preparations when they head to FA Women's Championship side Lewes Ladies tomorrow (2pm).

Smith's side head to THe Dripping Pan off the back of a good test last weekend when they beat Bournemouth Ladies 4-2 at Oaklands.

Pearce still searching for final few pieces of the Rocks squad Next Game

GOSPORT BORO (A) Today, 7.45pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is urging for patience from the fans this year as he puts the final pieces together of one of the youngest Rocks squads in recent memory.

As the Nyewood Lane side play their last pre-season match tonight away at Gosport Borough (7.45pm), the experienced manager says he's still got a few places to fill.

After a disappointing relegation campaign last year where a lack of goals was the biggest problem, Rocks fans will be hoping a return to Bostik Premier can deliver more victories than losses over the next nine months.

But, a week before the season kicks off away at Haringey Borough (Aug 11, 3pm), Pearce is keen to cool down any talk that life in the third tier of non-league football will be a breeze.

Instead, he called for patience, adding it would be a few weeks yet until he had pieced together a settled squad.

THe Bognor boss said: "I think we're moving in the right direction, which is good.

"THe squad is getting stronger but, at Bognor, we have always had to understand that we are not the priority on everyone's list.

"We have to wait for people playing further away to start looking for alternatives. We have always been a club that has to wait for the last few places to fill."

Among the positions that Pearce is looking to fill are left back, central defence and an experienced central midfielder.

Pearce said the latter would help complement 'four or five excellent young players' that we have.

Included within this is Marley Ridge, who has joined from Havant & Waterlooville on loan and has looked composed when starting a number of pre-season fixtures.

Rocks fans who headed to Salisbury last Friday also got their first glimpse of Portsmouth loan duo Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge. THe pair played well in what turned out to be a 1-0 victory for the Rocks, sealed by a first half Calvin Davies strike.

On the new signings, Pearce said: "THey have all done well, all seem to be enjoying it.

"THe whole team did quite well at Salisbury especially in the first half, but it's early days.

"Like anything, when putting a squad together there will be highs and lows.

"It is one of the youngest teams that I put together at this level. But I will always believe that the type of club we are, the location we are in, we can only go for young hungry players who have something to prove."

And as for a target for the season ahead?

Pearce said: "THere are always going to be certain players who'll be more influential than others. If we can keep them fit and free from suspension then we can beat anyone in the league. But youth does deliver inconsistency."

On where they could finish, he added: "I don't want to be fighting a relegation battle."

Rocks fans, of course, are not new to the idea that players who are good enough are old enough. Jack Pearce has long advocated bringing young players into the club for a couple of seasons before they move on.

THe latest cohort is headed by 17-year-old Brad Lethbridge and 18-year-old Dan Smith, both of whom have joined on season-long loans from League One Portsmouth.

Word from inside the Rocks camp is that both have settled in well, despite not meeting their new mates until just before Friday night's match against Salisbury.

Judging by that game, both will be integral to how Bognor attack this year, with goals being an key target.

Regardless of how well they are regarded in Pompey's academy, men's football is different.

But if they can deal with the pressure, then it will undoubtedly be to Bognor's benefit.

HELLO and welcome to my first fortnightly column for the Post, which I'll be writing for the season.

THis year will be my sixth with the Rocks. I came here on loan from Havant and really enjoyed it.

After I returned to Havant, I spoke to the manager Lee Bradbury, who spoke to Jack and managed to sort out a move. I've been happy with how it's all worked out.

THis year it looks like I will be captain too.

It's not something which is done officially. Unless there's been an outstanding candidate like Robbo then usually it just goes to the person who has been there the longest.

I think the reason why I have been at the club so long is down to the people here and the way they play football.

As long as Jack is involved in the club, then Bognor will never play the long ball game.

You just have to see that with the way we played under Dabba and Jamie - they all wanted to play football and now we're continuing.

It has been a summer of change with Robbie Blake coming in as first team coach.

I have always said that I will respect people in terms of where they have been and what they've achieved.

It's difficult not to listen to someone who has played at the top levels of English football, Given his track record, you have to listen to him.

He is very laid back and a very likeable character. When you like someone, then you tend to play well for them.

His training has, to be honest, been unreal - it has been some of the best sessions I've ever had. It's competitive and at a high tempo and everyone is enjoying it.

I think speaking generally things are coming together.

We have lost a few players which is always a bit worrying.

But as a club we always do lose a few as Bognor is not able to

match the money demands that other clubs have.

In terms of what we have brought in, they have been good. We need to get a few more in, though, and once we do that I think we will be there.

Everyone is fit, we have Chad coming back from injury and everyone is looking forward to it.

THe latest two additions were Brad Lethbridge and Dan Smith on loan from Portsmouth.

I only spoke to them for the first time on Friday at Salisbury but they are doing really well.

THey may only be young at 17 and 19 but they don't look like it. THey are ready for men's football which we will need at this level where many of the teams are quite physical.

I think the performance last week at Salisbury wasn't too bad. We did struggle in the second half, though, which shows that we have a lot of things we still need to work on.

With Doug and Harvey out, it also showed that we probably need a couple of extra faces, perhaps up front and out wide.

It's always a waiting game at this stage of the year, however, so it may not be until the start of the season before we can lure them from elsewhere.

Jack has made it clear he wants to get back up to where we were last year.

But looking around at what other teams in the league have done, it will not be that easy In the season we did go up we had a good group of people.

THe team spirit was the best we have had, so if we can get back to that then I do not think we will be that far off.

For myself, I will just try and play as well as I can each week and stay out of trouble.

I have my own personal standards which I like to meet and I know when I have a bad game. As long as each week I can give my best and try and stay fit then that will be a good season.
