Safety fears over new homes FEARS for the safety of children in Rose Green could not stop new homes being approved.

Councillors warned the already dangerous motoring conditions around the site of housing in Carlton Avenue would be worsened by the properties.

But Arun District Council development control committee agreed by a large majority to back the outline application for eight properties in principle behind

numbers 34, 36, 38, 40 and 44.

Committee member Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said: "I am disappointed that West Sussex County Council highways have no objections. This is extremely close to (Rose Green Junior) School.

"The parking around school times in that area is absolutely atrocious. I have had representations from residents where they have been terrified because they have almost run over a child.

"I know it is not a planning reason to refuse and that we have not got the backing of county highways.

"I am always speaking to them about the difficulties around this area because of the school and the parking of people dropping off their children and collecting them.

"Already, they park quite a few streets away and then walk the difference. To add more houses, I just find disappointing."

Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham W) said: "I am absolutely horrified by this.

My grandchildren go to the Rose Green school and it's absolutely horrendous around there. People are parking everywhere. Residents can't get out of their drives because of the cars.

"It's so dangerous and you see them parking on grass verges. It just can't take more traffic there. It's a nightmare."

Anton wins fight for new standard BATTLING Bognor Regis businessman Anton Matthews has won his fight for safer cemeteries.

Mr Matthews' 14-year campaign to achieve a tougher standard for fixing headstones included a new British Standard.

BS8415 came into effect last week. It ensures headstones should have passed a memorial stone stability system to show they can withstand a pull force test of 150kg. This is to stop them moving after installation because of soil conditions or vandalism.

Mr Matthews, 72, who owns a memorial stone centre in North Bersted, said: "I'm very pleased the new standard includes this test. I have made my point.

"It's now down to the authorities to comply with this. At the end of the day, we should be working in the best interests of our customers. That's what this is all about.

"All too frequently the product being used in order to support a memorial just does not do what it says on the tin."

He was prompted to devise a new method of fixing headstones after a series of tragic accidents in churchyards caused by unsafe headstones.

He believed the usual method of attaching them with a pin in the ground each side of the grave was flawed.

His alternative method, called StoneSafe, is a bolted mechanical system with two 20mm stainless steel studs and two core plugs with stainless steel bars.

"The traditional method of bashing a pin or tube (ground anchor) into an

unknown soil condition, unaware it could contain unexpected voids from the backfill of a grave, is an outdated method of fixing.

"It is an outdated method of fixing and should be regarded as a base from which improvements for memorial installations should be developed and not as a practice to be blindly followed," he said.

Stone-Safe is one of four fixing methods included in the new standard. The best practice also calls for headstones to be tested every five years, a safety certificate to be signed by a civil engineer and the use of metal reinforced foundations.

Tests for headstones have to be carried out in 1m X 1m trenches rather than patches of soil to make the conditions consistent wherever the location.

"The difficult part now is to get the new standard followed," said Mr Matthews.

"You can have the best system in the world but, whether or not people follow it is another matter.

"In the past, evidence has shown that the foundation base has been seen as totally unimportant regarding the stability of a memorial.

"When I see a problem like that, I like to try and solve it."

The determination of Mr Matthews has put him at odds with the national body for memorial masons, after he claimed its fixing system was flawed.

But it won him national safety awards in 2005 and 2006 as well as a guest place on the committee which devised the new standard.

BIRDMAN organisers are working hard to stage the best event yet in Bognor Regis next year.

Last weekend was the scheduled date for this year's staging of the wacky competition from the pier.

But lack of sponsorship caused the International Bognor Birdman committee to reluctantly cancel the crowd-puller.

It was hoped to partly fill the gap with an event outside the pier on Sunday but a lack of time could not be overcome.

A spokesman for the committee said: "Work has already started on

sponsorship for International Bognor Birdman 2019 and we have been concentrating all our efforts on this.

"Funday Sunday, August 12, which we only had a very short time to organise has suffered as a consequence and, for this year only, will not take place.

"However, our International Bognor Birdman 2019 with the new ideas including the whole town as well as the fantastic flying from the pier is beginning to take shape."

This year is the 40th anniversary of Birdman coming to Bognor Regis. It began in Selsey in 1971.

Jim wins bronze medal at games

Plan for eyesores

f Jim Cullen A BOGNOR REGIS man who came close to dying joined hundreds of transplant athletes from around Britain.

Jim Cullen won bronze for the second year running at the 2018 British Transplant Games. The Birminghambased event ended on Sunday after four days in which more than 800 children and adults from across the UK competed in a range of sports including athletics, cycling, swimming and football.

The participation by Jim in its table tennis tournament was in contrast to his diagnosis with end stage liver disease at the age of 60 to leave him needing a lifesaving liver transplant.

Liver disease is one of the most common causes of death in England. Of the diagnoses, 37 per cent are because of alcohol-related liver disease.

On average, more than one in four

transplants go to people with the disease.

Jim, 64, said: "The games were an opportunity to join others from several months of age to over 70 years old who, like me, were given a second chance of life thanks to the selfless act of another human being and their family."

He said he was diagnosed as seriously ill in March, 2015. A new liver was his only chance of surviving.

"It was a complete shock and, at the time, felt like a death sentence. The chance of reaching my next birthday was very slim," he said.

"I stopped drinking and regained the strength needed to survive the (transplant) operation.

"With the news of a compatible liver, an ambulance was outside my house in 20 minutes. It was straight into the operating theatre after a siren and blue

light journey across London.

"The next thing I remember was 'Wake up Jim, you've got a new liver'."

Jim won a bronze medal at last year's transplant games. As well as taking part in the games, he volunteers as a British Liver Trust support group facilitator in West Sussex to help others who suffer from liver disease.

He is also completing a return to practice course at the University of Brighton to resume his previous career as a nurse to enable him to care for people.

Audrey Cornelius, of the British Liver Trust, said the transplant games were a special event of celebration.

"We hope everyone involved enjoyed themselves," she said.

The British Liver Trust is the leading UK liver charity for adults.

TWO DANGEROUS eyesore buildings, pictured above, along Bognor Regis seafront could be demolished.

The distinctive premises at 2-4 Waterloo Square are in a conservation area and have featured in historic photographs which date back more than 100 years. But the new leaseholders want to knock them down because of their dangerous condition and redevelop the sensitively located site opposite the pier.

Bognor Regis Local History Society chairman Greg Burt said the demolition would be good for the town’s image only if the replacement structure was of an equal standard.

Mr Burt called for action at a meeting in May for the buildings’ condition to be improved. But he said the feared for the future of the site.

“I am open-minded. The buildings are an eyesore but this depends on what goes there in their place," he said.

“That area is supposed to be marketed as the Old Town. These are the only two character buildings left in the Old Town and it makes a mockery of the Old Town if they go.

“They have got handsome facades and it would be good if they were replaced like-for-like. But the history of Bognor shows that, when old buildings are demolished, the new buildings are either completely different or of lesser quality," he said.

The demolition plans have been submitted to Arun District Council by developer B5 Ltd. The site occupies 508sq m and contains a mix of ground floor retail and upper floor flats. There are believed to be five flats. But B5 Ltd's

planning agent, Philip Hamblin, said it had been impossible to gain full access to the properties for a structural review.

But the visit: “…highlighted the state of the structures’ primary steel support beams, which were found in many cases to be in a serious condition, with one over the ground floor frontage of No 2 Waterloo Square showing serious and extensive corrosion and in our opinion rendered the structure in an unsafe and unstable condition and poses a threat to life, given its location in a prime tourist and public area.”

Mr Hamblin described the buildings as a pair of two and three-storey buildings with a Dutch or Flemish gable façade with a pediment at the top and the exterior rendered with a number of decorative features.

They sit in The Steyne Conservation Area and have been listed by Arun as being important to the area’s history but Mr Hamblin said their features were not ‘traditional’ to the town and had been altered. Vast quantities of resources would be needed to restore them.

The buildings are owned by Arun District Council. A spokesman said it was committed to the site's redevelopment but previous leaseholders were responsible for repairs.

"It would not be equitable for the local taxpayer to pick up the bill for the repair of commercial properties of this nature," he said.

Initial talks with Arun about replacing the buildings involved building 46 twobedroom flats with 600sq m of retail and restaurant uses with undercroft parking. A new planning application will be needed for any proposal.

TOWN councillors have agreed their officers should meet members of Rox Music and Arts to discuss reviving the popular Bognor Regis festival.

Bognor Regis Town Council's events, promotion and leisure committee on Monday decided to find out how a potential partnership between the two organisations could work for an event in 2019 and the following two years.

Sheila Hodgson, the council's projects officer, said: "Members felt that previous Rox events were a positive addition for the town.

"They agreed in principle to the proposal and were in favour of pound for pound match funding."

` Toilets installed TEMPORARY toilets have been installed along Bognor Regis seafront.

The loos were put in place by Arun District Council. They will stay for the rest of the summer as the result of the failure of the council's supplier to provide the permanent toilets in time for the main holiday season. The toilets - one each for men, women and disabled people are opposite Walton Avenue.

They are being funded by the permanent toilets' manufacturer.

"Languages are essential when it comes to understanding cultures and widening opportunities.

"Nearly two-thirds of employers say they value language skills among their employees.

"West Sussex is an important tourist area with 1.6 million visitors a year, of which 663,000 are from overseas, including 95,000 from France, 58,000 from Spain and 45,000 from Germany in 2016."

TWO PARISH councils in Barnham and Eastergate are to merge.

The expected date for the joining together to take place is December 1.

Arun District Council's electorial review sub-committee unanimously agreed the new council should be formed after an update about the proposals.

Its decision is certain to be ratified by all the council's members next month.

The merger will see the centuries old administrative division between the two areas ended.

A resident who will be affected by the changes told the sub-committee a vote which backed the change was flawed.

The detailed objection from the individual, who was not named at the meeting, was read out to councillors by Jackie Follis, Arun's group head of policy.

The letter stated: "Serious concerns on behalf of the silent majority have been raised that, on the balance of probability, that there is no true overall majority for the merger of the two parishes.

"In reality, a true majority of parishioners (two-thirds) were against the merger or abstained, while only a minority (about a third) of the whole population of the two parishes voted in support of the merger.

"At best, the vote is rather tenuous and is based on biased and flawed proposals, especially if the non-reflective vote is then used as the justification for amalgamation."

The letter stated the turnout of 37.7 per cent meant most of the electorate failed

to vote. Added to those who voted, these meant more than 4,000 of the some 5,000 residents either opposed the merger or did not bother to vote, they stated.

But Mrs Follis told councillors: "I believe the consultation process was undertaken in a way that ensures all the relevant parties had the opportunity to express their support, or otherwise, for the merger.

"It's entirely a matter for local residents whether or not they choose to participate in a ballot of this kind.

"I'm not prepared to second-guess what the views of the residents who didn't vote would have been."

The consultation had been carried out in line with guidance from the Local Government Boundary Commission.

Both parishes showed a similar level of support for the merger of 80.59 per cent in Barnham and 80.55 in Eastergate. The turnout was 37.69 per cent.

Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham) said: "These are my wards and I have talked to people - I don't know if they took part in the consultation - and everyone thinks it is a good idea and they are all in favour.

We should go ahead with this. It is good for the community and they want it."

Cllr Stephen Haymes (C, Yapton) said: "People think the two areas are co-joined anyway. When you tell them Barnham railway station's entrance is in Eastergate, they think you are daft."

The combined council will have 13 members and represent some 5,000 people when it is formed.

Homes plan turned down PLANS for more than 50 homes in Lidsey have been rejected - because they are in the wrong place.

The scheme for Wings Nursery in Lidsey Road is outside the built-up area boundary in Arun District Council's new local plan.

The boundary in the land use blueprint sets out the locations within which housing is expected to be built and was adopted by councillors last month.

Arun's development control committee members said they had to refuse planning permission or risk seeing their local plan damaged three weeks after its approval.

Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Bersted) said: "The integrity of the local plan is vital. We need to maintain that. It's new and we have got to use it as our main document."

But she hoped the scheme would be resubmitted when the council asked for sites for an extra 1,250 homes in the district.

Dan Vick, a council planning officer, said the local plan showed Arun had 5.3 years of housing land supply - above the five year minimum - to mean sites outside the boundary did not need to be developed.

"The size of the development represents a significant encroachment into the countryside for which we now have up to date policies, which we can use to refuse the development," he said.

Planning agent Gareth Giles said: "The local plan is a much-needed and important document for Arun. But, at 5.3 years, the council is at risk of slipping below the five years supply needed."

Dog bites toddler A TERRIFIED toddler has been bitten by a dog in Bognor Regis.

The attack on the threeyear-old boy in King's Parade happened at 3pm on Monday when the dog ran on to the pavement.

Believed to be a creamcoloured Staffordshire Terrier, it jumped up and bit the boy on his chest. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

A man with another dog of the same breed collected the original dog and he and a woman, pictured right, walked away from the path.

Sergeant Matthew Phelps, of Sussex Police's Arun and Chichester prevention team, said: "The boy has been left very traumatised by this incident and we are providing support to the family.

"We believe the woman in the picture is the owner of the dog in question and we would like to speak to her about the matter."

She is white, 5ft 4in, stockily built, and in her late 50s. The man is white, tall and skinny.

The attack is the second by a dog in the area in three months. In May, the Post reported how a chihuahau belonging to Aldwick couple Brian and Hazel Goldsmith was killed in West Park by another dog.

Aldwick Parish Council chairman, Cllr Lilian Richardson, also spoke about its members' concerns over the potential impact of the planned housing on road safety conditions.

But council planning officer Dan Vick told Wednesday's meeting the developer, Counterpoint Properties, would have to pay for double yellow lines around the junction to the properties, between 34 and 36 Carlton Avenue, to ensure no parking could take place at any time.

He said: "The application has been comprehensively assessed by West Sussex highways who have raised no objections to the principle of the access and in respect of the safety of its use."

Counterpoint Properties had shown large vehicles like refuse lorries and fire engines could easily use the access, he added.

The approval will be followed by detailed plans for the new properties. They are likely to be a mix of bungalows, chalet bungalows and 1.5-2 storey houses on near half a hectare site.

Two earlier plans, in 2013 and 2014, were both refused by Arun.

The initial proposals were also rejected by a government planning inspector.

Growth deal is signed TWO COUNCILS have joined together for a ground-breaking deal to deliver economic growth in Bognor Regis.

West Sussex and Arun councils have signed the growth deal for the entire district.

Their respective leaders, Cllr Louise Goldsmith and Cllr Gillian Brown, met in Bognor Regis Town Hall last Friday to sign the agreement.

It is a partnership pledge that focuses on a number of priority projects that aim to create jobs, attract business investment, provide new homes and improve infrastructure.

Cllr Goldsmith said: "Signing this deal is a great step forward for the future of the Arun district.

"The ambitious plans are set to deliver real tangible benefits for residents and the local economy.

"There is huge potential to generate economic prosperity in the Arun area.

"What's needed now are the components to unlock that potential and we believe this growth programme will deliver incredible opportunities

for local people and the business community."

The key projects include: • Regis Centre, Bognor Regis - drive forward the redevelopment of the key seafront site • Hothamton car park, Bognor Regis development of some commercial and residential buildings and a new community amenity at the strategic location in the town • Regeneration of Littlehampton town centre and seafront • River Arun Cycleway - delivering a leisureorientated cycleway along the river bank between Arundel and Littlehampton • Road improvements to the A29, A284/A259 and the Arundel bypass Cllr Brown said: "We are delighted to be working with West Sussex County Council on the delivery of our priority economic growth projects.

"Arun has so much to offer businesses and investors and our regeneration proposals will ensure that the local economy will continue to grow and prosper."

Many homeowners are upset about the approval by Arun District Council's members of its local plan.

This has established the principle of building 1,200 homes in Pagham and 2,500 off Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted.

Planning applications for the three sites in Pagham have been submitted by various developers. No formal proposals have been put forward for Chalcraft Lane but the site was the subject of an application ten years ago.

The campaign against the housing has been led by the members of the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfield Movement (PAGAM).

One of the group's founders, Albert Homer, said voters should use their anger about the housing at the local government elections next May. All Arun's 54 members - 42 of them Conservatives - will have to stand for reelection in the ballot boxes.

Mr Homer, in a letter on behalf of PAGAM, said: "At the elections for councillors for Arun District Council next year we need to remember what has transpired in our district with regards to the local plan.

"We should cast our votes with regard to local issues and choose candidates who not only listen to us but will do everything in their power to address the issues we raise.

"It is not a matter of voting for the strongest party, the party who have

always voted for or the one your parents voted for - times change, issues change and we must try and do what is best for our district. Our future depends on it."

PAGAM had informed residents about the impact of the housing developments planned for the western edge of the Arun district, he said.

This include the homes' effect on Pagham Harbour local nature reserve, the absence of adequate roads, the problems of flooding if the homes are built on flood plains and overstretched services such as doctors and schools.

There was also the loss of the best and most versatile farmland for the housing.

"It must be overwhelmingly evident from all that has been said that these developments are going to cause many problems, not only for present residents, but all those who are yet to come to live here," said Mr Homer.

"Despite these protestations, Arun - having a huge Tory majority - rather than heeding the warnings they have been given, have chosen to ignore them and follow the agenda that their political masters in Westminster have set for them.

"They have set a target of 20,000 homes to be built in Arun from 2011 to 2031 - a target that is unlikely to be met since it will be the builders who will construct homes at a rate which will ensure they make maximum profits from them."

Such skewed decision-making made a mockery of democracy. An apolitical council would have been expected to decide differently based on the expected effect of the housing, he added.

Affordable homes scheme is proposed for Felpham site NEARLY 20 affordable homes are planned for Felpham.

Worthing Homes has submitted a planning application to build the 18 properties on land west of Stanhorn Grove. The location is on part of the Site Six development area where more than 700 homes have been built.

A statement by Worthing Homes' planning agent, James Potter, says: "There is a high demand for affordable housing within the Arun district which has been confirmed by the council at pre-application stage."

The proposed homes will comprise of two one-bed properties, seven two-

bed dwellings and nine with three bedrooms.

"The proposal reflects the character of the locality, providing a mix of dwellings with an appropriate use of materials and detailing to reflect the character, form and design of the surrounding development.

"It is not considered the proposal would have any harmful impacts on the surrounding properties," stated Mr Potter.

About 100 residents from the area attended a consultation event about the proposal. Their views were taken into account for the final design.

A YEARLY commitment to help feed people in Bognor Regis has been made by some of the town's Rotarians.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club's members have decided to support the Foodbank with £1,200 during the next year. The first £100 monthly donation has been presented by chairman Terry Farndell.

The following donations will be made regularly to help the Foodbank, based in Argyle Road, buy basic groceries to supply those unable to afford food some emergency supplies.

Rotary Club press officer Brian Clarke said: "The club believes the food provided by the Foodbank to help those who suddenly find it difficult to feed the family...is a wonderful service and we are very pleased to help.

"Many people, even locally, are just one unforeseen problem away from not being able to feed themselves or their children."

This difficulty could be an unexpected bill, a requirement to find a deposit or a delay in being paid.

"Foodbanks work with frontline professionals to identify people in need and issue them with a Foodbank voucher. These professionals include organisations such as children's centres, housing associations, welfare agencies and community mental health team who are best placed to assess need," added Mr Clarke.

Bognor Regis Foodbank is among more than 400 across the UK which are supported by the Trussell Trust charity.

Figures released by the trust last week showed the increased need for food for children during the school summer holiday.

Last July and August saw more than 204,525 emergency supplies given to people, 74,011 of them children.

The preceeding two months saw 70,510 supplies going to children.

` Better pavements IMPROVEMENTS worth £1.5m have been made to West Sussex pavements so far this year.

Most of 2018's pavement rebuilding programme has been completed on budget and ahead of schedule. A small fund remains for urgent repairs before the end of next March.

Small-scale repairs are being carried out on ten sites around Arun, Mid-Sussex and Crawley districts. A further 20 schemes are ready to be started. Examples include replacing steps with a ramp for improved disabled access and removing areas of uneven slabs.

Surface treatment to provide a new walking surface on top of an existing footway has also been carried out along the coastal strip from Aldwick to Southwick.

City centre enhancements have taken place in Chichester and more dropped crossing sites are also set to be installed there.

County council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, Cllr Bob Lanzer, said: "We fully appreciate residents care deeply about the condition of pavements, which is why they feature so highly on our priority list."

Steve Philips, of the contractor, Balfour Beatty Living Places, said the work would make a positive difference to people's daily lives.

Nursery's success in tomato contest CHILDREN and staff at an Aldwick nursery came first in a competition to grow cherry tomatoes.

Green-fingered enthusiasts at the ABC Day Nursery were presented with a certificate and gift voucher to mark their success by the town mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Stephen Reynolds.

The contest was held by Bognor Regis In Bloom and was open to schools and nurseries around the town.

Pagham's on parade again SMOKING is being banned at this year's summer showcase in Pagham.

The extremely dry conditions mean visitors to Pagham on Parade on August 19 will be told they cannot light up cigarettes or cigars.

Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said the tough stance had to be taken because the land on the site next to Pagham Village Hall was like a tinderbox.

"We are going to enforce a no smoking policy. We can't take any risks with the grass being as dry as it is," he said.

"If any of the vehicles had a leak of petrol, we don't want a big explosion if someone was smoking."

Extra fire extinguishers would also be in place this year.

The free event is set to attract 150-200 classic vehicles on the paddock next to the village hall in Pagham Road.

They will be complemented by a full programme of arena entertainment from the Sussex Steel Band and the area's Sea Cadets. The arena will also be lined with a variety of stalls for various charities.

Bargain hunters will find plenty to interest them on the stalls in the packed village hall as well.

The day - open from 10.30am-4pm - will feature its traditional service of remembrance around 2pm led by Pagham's vicar, the Rev Mark Eminson.

Organisers angry at the country fair vandals but event is still a success VANDALS targeted one of the biggest events in Bognor Regis.

The wreckers slashed some 20 gazebos among the 60-plus which attracted thousands of visitors to the town’s latest Hotham Park Country Fair.

The damage was the first to have happened in the event’s 17-year history and angered volunteer organisers at the Hotham Park Heritage Trust.

Deborah Northcott, their team leader, said: “It’s such a shame this has happened. It has been a really lovely country fair only for a few morons to spoil it for everyone else. The traders have got their livelihoods to think of and will have to pay for repairs to their gazebos.”

Some stock was stolen and nearly all the affected stalls had their items rummaged through.

The damage happened early on Sunday after the fair’s first day. Mrs Northcott said she believed it occurred at 2.20am.

The fair’s security personnel were thought to be keeping watch on an alleged drugs party in the park close to the fair’s site when the vandalism took place.

She reported the incident to police but the fact the park was in darkness at the time of the vandalism and the lack of CCTV evidence and a suspect led officers to say there was nothing they could do.

“I don’t blame the police because they are so short-staffed,” said Mrs Northcott.

“But this is an event we put on for Bognor Regis and we don’t need this to happen.”

Rosemary Warren, the heritage trust's chairman, said: "This was our 17th event

in our 20th year and never in that time have we had such criminal damage carried out in such a wanton manner.

"Many of our stallholders return each year and, very fortunately, they were able to rise above this deliberate attempt to scupper the event."

She said the trust would be asking questions about the police's reaction and was grateful to the stallholders for staying loyal and the volunteers for carrying on with the fair.

The country fair's activities covered more than half of the park during the weekend and featured entertainment from 11am-5pm on both days.

Among those who kept audiences of all ages enthralled was the Yarnsmith of Norwich on his debut at the fair.

The Yarnsmith, aka Dave Tonge, of Norwich, spun plenty of tales – many comical – to keep along an historical tradition. He staged four sessions of incredible storytelling each day and attracted some 30 people to each.

“People say children don’t sit and listen but they don’t often get the chance.

There are no phones here and they can join in as well.

"Most of my tales are about the poor getting one over on the rich, like Robin Hood, and they always go down well.

It has to be a subject which people can relate to.”

Other acts included singer Heather Alderton, guitarist Dave Harris and calypso fun from The Bamboo Band.

The country fair also provided the chance for groups around Bognor Regis

to showcase their activities.

Among them, and also making their fair debut, were the members of Aldwick Revival WI. Their president, Christine Brown, said they wanted to build on the momentum of their first three years.

"We have gone from strength to strength. We have just under 50 members from their early 30s to their late 70s.

“The things we do are typical of the WI but we are also very untypical as well.

We have a wide range of speakers and, if two members, say they want to do something, we will arrange it.

"But it is also all about friendship. If any of our ladies needs someone, they know there will be another member to help them.”

Bognor Regis Pierwatch and the town’s RAFA branch, art society and local history society were among the other groups present. Shire horse wagon rides, donkey rides and reptiles, owls and alpacas provided plenty of animal interest.

The large number of visitors included Rose Green couple Jennifer ScottReid, 32, Adrian Oprea, 36, and their nine-month-old daughter, Grace Oprea. Jennifer said: “I’ve been here before. It’s a nice community event.

People can highlight their businesses and there’s music. it’s a nice family occasion."

The weekend, backed by Butlin’s, is set to raise thousands of pounds for the heritage trust to spend on a project in the park yet to be decided.

` Appeal about car POLICE have appealed for the public's help in tracing a vehicle reported stolen in the Yapton area.

The black Vauxhall Astra, registration VK13 FGN, was said to have been taken on July 11.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "It is possible that it may be parked or have been abandoned in Littlehampton, Worthing or the surrounding areas."

The hottest day of the scorching month was the 17th when the equipment in his garden recorded 97.34F, or 36.3C, early in the morning. The coldest day was July 1st at 8.8C. Last month was also dry to go with the red hot temperatures.

Just 9mm of rain during its 31 days was recorded by Mr Goodwill. The strongest gust of wind reached 14.5mph on July 25.

Pair take plunge for charity DARING colleagues Sarah Tate and Mary Schooley swopped a Bognor Regis shop for the sky.

The workers from the Southern Co-op's store in Hawthorn Road abseilled down a south coast landmark to raise money for St Wilfrid's Hospice.

Their 100m descent of the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth raised £800 for the good cause.

Their bravery kick-started a week of charity awareness at the store and enabled it to raise £1,842.92 thanks to the support of residents in the area.

The fundraising activities included a bric-a-brac sale, cakes sale, wear your pyjamas to work day, a hamper raffle, a book sale and a competition to guess the number of sweets in a jar.

Sarah said: "I am scared of heights but I thought an abseil was a great thing to do for charity.

"When we were stood up the top together, we saw that we had to step on to a small platform and then had to sit down on your harness over the edge.

"We didn't know if we were going to be able to do it. But we both went for it and it was fantastic.

Halfway through I looked down and, as I looked down, the wind took my hands and feet away from the wall, which was a bit scary. "But, overall, it was fantastic and out of this world. St Wilfrid's Hospice helped both of my friends. It's a great charity."

The hospice is the store's chosen charity as part of Southern Co-op's community engagement programme, Love Your Neighbourhood.

This addresses four key social themes for promoting greener, healthier, safer and more inclusive neighbourhoods.

Alisa Lakeman-Ford, the trusts and corporates senior officer at the hospice, said it was grateful to all the team at the Hawthorn Road store.

"They have really entered into the spirit of the charity awareness week and come up with some great ideas for fundraising for us," she said.

These included loads of tasty treats for the cake sale on Monday and all the staff wearing their pjyamas to work on Tuesday for pyjama day. They had a different activity each day and the centrepiece was Mary and Sarah's abseil down the Spinnaker Tower.

The hospice would cost just over £7.7m to run this year, Alisa said, and it relied heavily on the generosity of its community to help it fund the expenses.

"The team are doing a great job of not only raising vital funds to keep us running but also raising awareness.

"I want to say a great big thank you to every single one of them - thank you." * Motorists who feel like 'coffin' up some money for a good cause should head to Rose Green later this month.

Southern Co-op's Funeralcare is staging a charity car wash from 10am-1pm on August 18 in aid of Bognor Regis Lions Club. Small car drivers will be asked for a £5 donation and motorists in large cars and vans will be requested to pay £10 to get their vehicles gleaming. Money raised will go to the Lions's Wencelas Appeal.

Lindsey Booker, funeral co-ordinator at the Nyetimber Lane business, said: "It might seem strange thinking about it now when we are in the middle of an extremely hot summer but the Wencelas Appeal supports those that are going to have to make a choice between food and heat this winter."

Panto fun at theatre is for good cause PRINCE ARTHUR of Bog will be on a mission when a homemade panto is staged in Bognor Regis.

The stage royalty is looking to be saved from an awkward marriage in the family show when he gets involved in saving two damsels in distress.

Plenty of laughs, well-known songs, toe-tapping dance routines and big surprises for all the family are promised along the way at the Regis Centre on September 7 and 8.

Bognor Regis area resident Jason Green, 26, has written the script for Journey To The Magic Sword as he continues his love of involvement in the world of live entertainment and proves his doubters wrong.

"It has always been a passion to write and stage a show and to perform on stage since I was two.

"My mum was always told that I would never be able to read, write, go to school, make friends and earn an education because of my autism.

"All I've ever wanted to do is to prove those who doubted me wrong.

"I have since not only gained a national diploma and a degree in musical theatre but I have also written and staged not one but two shows for charity."

Sword will go to the British Heart Foundation. It is being staged by Jason's JWS Productions.

He says that, as well as offering opportunities for people to perform, it is fully inclusive to those with disabilities, wherever possible.

"We are an all inclusive amateur theatre group and we all stand together as equals," he said.

The first show he wrote, performed and solely directed was Once Upon A Time in aid of a prostate cancer charity last year.

He added: "I felt that, because the group was so close, and the response from the last show was so huge and received good comments, I decided to write another script indoors on a rainy day.

"The script of Journey To The Magic Sword was born and officially completed three days after the last performance of Once Upon A Time."

Prince Arthur of Bog has been set up by his mother, Queen Aeriel, to marry the wealthy but annoying Lady Guinevere Of Nor. But Prince Arthur is in love with Bog citizen Annette.

To save himself from the marriage, the prince sails to Skull Island to search for The Magic Sword. His journey becomes a mission to free Annette and Queen Aeriel from the villain, Captain Fleshcreep.

TEENAGERS who are due to go to university next month have been urged to be meningitis aware.

The Meningitis Now charity is to launch its campaign to stress the importance of teenagers knowing the systems of the potentially fatal condition.

It has stated the national Men ACWY vaccine programme does not protect them against all strains of the disease, such as Men B. Teenagers have the second highest risk in the population of contracting meningitis after babies and toddlers. Up to a quarter of students carry the bacteria that can cause the disease, compared to one in ten of the general population.

Dr Tom Nutt, chief executive of Meningitis Now, said: "Given this fact, I would urge both parents and young people to learn the signs and symptoms of meningitis and act fast if the suspect it, because vaccinations alone will not protect them against every cause of the disease."

Year of successes is celebrated at meeting NEARLY £300,000 has been raised by an organisation that promotes charities and community groups around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Dozens of the members of Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester attended its latest annual meeting to hear about its work in the past 12 months.

Jenny Holmes, VAAC's senior admin and communications worker, said: "It was great to see so many of our member organisations and we loved having them there to help us celebrate another great year at VAAC. "We've worked hard this year, with some challenges, but the feedback from our members has been very positive and we look forward to helping even more groups thrive over the next year."

During the meeting, held at Yapton and Ford Village Hall, guests heard about the 135 organisations that VAAC had supported in the past year.

This work included the £288,395 VAAC helped them to raise and the 424 new volunteers recruited.

Some of the most common ways that VAAC has supported the groups included helping them to govern their organisation according to best practice, enabling them to plan effectively, enabling them to meet their legal obligations and enabling them to move towards being more financially secure.

Once the formal part of the meeting about VAAC's work had ended, Graeme Potter, from West Sussex

Reynolds, the Bognor Regis town mayor, Chichester District Council's deputy leader, Cllr Eileen Lintill, and Cllr Brian Knight, chairman of Bersted Parish Council, attending the meeting.

Hilary Spencer, VAAC's chief executive, also took the opportunity to thank its funders, 'without whom we wouldn't be here'.

VAAC is based at Bognor Regis Town Hall in Clarence Road.

County Council's public health team, gave an interesting presentation on wellbeing, resilience and strength-based approaches within the voluntary sector.

This was very well received. Attendees described it as an 'excellent presentation' and 'very informative'.

After this, lunch was served and those present had the chance to chat with the other organisations which were present.

Prom becomes art gallery AN OPEN air chalk art gallery has been created along Bognor Regis seafront.

Scores of drawings stretched along the promenade on Wednesday from the bandstand towards the pier in one of the latest Funshine days held by the town council.

About 100 children went along in the first of four hours to draw pictures on the seafront and enjoy the bandstand entertainment from Alice and the Queen of Hearts.

Two of those enjoying themselves with the sticks of chalk were sisters Rai and Yami Mamdizha, eight.

Rai, 11, drew a vivid rainbow, She said: "I'm enjoying this because it's like being at a proper seaside. There are so many good activities.

"I like art. This is good because when you use chalk on the ground, instead of paper, it becomes brighter and brings out more colour."

Her mother, Susan Mamdizha, 48, from Surrey, who was with her husband, Muno Mamdizha, 38, said: "This is entertaining. It's encouraging people to keep busy instead of just sitting on the beach."

The pavement art and playing out session was followed by indoor Punch & Judy shows.

More activities are planned for Tuesday to Thursday next week. Mujishans the Bubbleman will be first and a Caribbean drumming workshop will take place on Wednesday.

Kirsten Fitzpatrick, the council's events organiser, said: "This is the sixth year of the Funshine days and they have proved as popular as ever. It's all about giving children something to do in the summer holidays."

Initial sessions included the ever-popular donkey rides and Malcolm the Magician, with some 200-300 children for each show.

` School reunion FORMER pupils living around the world have expressed an interest in this autumn's reunion at a Chichester school.

The occasion on October 20 to celebrate 90 years since the foundation of Chichester High School For Boys has attracted plenty of enthusiasm.

All former students and staff and the Lancastrian School and their partners have been invited by the Old Cicestrians to go along.

The packed programme for the day will begin with an audio visual presentation, narrated by actor, author, playwright and former high school pupil David Wood.

A display of an extensive array of past photographs and memorabilia about the achievements of many old boys will also be on show. The many extra curricular activities that made the school so popular and famous will be included.

Student guided tours of the school, the chance to see the Combined Cadet Force in action and to visit the South Downs Planetarium will all take place as well.

TWO SETS of public toilets around Bognor Regis are set to be improved.

The conveniences at Hotham Park in the town and Culver Road in Felpham are among four which Arun District Council will refurbishing and altering.

Its cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, has awarded the £369,242 to the chosen contractor. The council considers the sites to be those with the highest priority.

Cyclists raise cash for DreamBuilding hospice f A member of the West Sussex grass cutting team in action

Grass verge cuts stopped in heat EXTREME summer heat which has turned grass brown has led West Sussex County Council to stop its verge cutting programme.

Daily temperatures in the 80s has stopped the grass growing. This has prompted the county council to stop its urban grass cutting timetable for August.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "Instead, we will utilise that freed-up resource to tackle areas which might otherwise be overlooked.

"Primarily, the focus will be on footpaths in urban areas, known as 'twittens', and cutting back on overgrown vegetation which has been

ALMOST £7,000 has been raised for St Wilfrid’s Hospice's DreamBuilding campaign by a team of cyclists who took on the Dream Wheelers challenge.

It took over two days for the team to ride 100 miles through the beautiful, but undulating course in Normandy, France.

Open to cyclists of all abilities, they were free to set their own pace and enjoy the evenings at their leisure.

Cyclist Pam Wilkinson said: "It's hard to say what the best bit of the trip was. The weather was perfect - cool and sunny.

"The organisation and support for riders was impeccable. Spring in Normandy was beautiful, but as ever, the

best bit was probably the people.

"We were very much a team - nobody was left out, or left behind. It was a real pleasure to be having so much fun whilst helping to raise money for the new hospice."

Another member of the team, Bernie Evans, explained: "I thoroughly enjoyed the Dream Wheelers cycling challenge!

The organisation and support team were excellent and the agony of climbing the hills was soon forgotten once we were all together in the evening, enjoying an excellent meal with a compulsory wine to wash it down!

"We had only met everyone once

"The West Sussex highways team will work closely with the contractor to continually monitor the growth and the grass cutting schedule will be resumed when necessary."

Two of the grass cutting crews will finish the rural cut and re-visit any areas identified as being missed.

No national guidelines exist for grass cutting schedules apart from the need to ensure roads are safe. But five cuts a year are suggested.

Hot tips for keeping your cool in current heatwave I AM SO scared to talk about this heat, because this is the best summer ever and I don’t want to take it for granted.

We have just had our annual camping trip in Dorset, with our closest family friends and it was amazing. Camping in wall-to-wall sunshine makes everything very pleasant!

You can go in the sea, dry off in seconds and even the damp towels dry out in no time at all. Sitting outside in the evenings, the temperature was comfortable and you didn’t need layers of clothing to stay warm.

So, while this beautiful weather continues, its good to know there are plenty of things you can do to cool down, such as the use of fans in every room, cold showers, ice packs and clothes in the fridge! (Honestly, try it!) But what can you actually eat to keep you cooler and help protect against sun damage?

While foods like broccoli, cantaloupe melon and grapefruit are great for their high water content; there are other foods with some surprising summer health benefits – including protection from the sun’s rays.

Here’s my top six cooling and hydrating foods:

Pomegranate: This fruit is extremely rich in antioxidants, ellagic acid and has anti-inflammatory agents, which can help your skin to resist cell damage caused by UVA and UVB rays.

Pomegranate has been proven to be beneficial to our health and fighting against ageing and sun-damaged skin. Try to eat two to three fruits a week, either the seeds with natural yoghurt or sprinkled over your salad, or drink a fresh pomegranate juice with ice.

Lettuce: Leafy greens are high in vitamin A and help to protect you from the UV radiation, limit dryness and irritation of your skin. Eat greens twice a day for the best results.

I would suggest using spinach as a foundation to your salad as it is rich in betacarotene. Spinach is good, as are mache and arugula which contain a lot of vitamins and minerals.

Carrots are a sun fighting power food

Carrot: Carrots are another sun fighting power food.

The beta-carotene in carrots, which the body converts to vitamin A, has been linked to reduce reaction to sunburn.

Try to eat a few carrots a day. Cut them in sticks and eat them with guacamole, which is high in omega-3 fatty acids and helps to reduce the risk of sunburn and develop an even skin tone.

Dairy products like natural yoghurt also contain a lot of vitamin A. If you are not a fan of carrots you can try other vitamin A food such as liver and other organ meats, eel, root vegetables, fruit, tuna, egg, low fat dairy, mango, kale, apricot, spinach and nettles.

Cucumber: Cucumber contains mostly water, which helps your skin to stay hydrated. The vegetable also helps to produce collagen, which is a good anti-cancer property.

Watermelon: This fruit works just like tomatoes. It is rich in antioxidants, which limit the UV-radiation on your body. Whatever you are doing this summer, staying cool and hydrated can make you feel like you have a whole lot more energy and stamina so you can continue feeling great all summer long. Enjoy!

MAJESTIC Warehouses have a rather enticing offer, one ending on Monday, whereby on the purchase of six bottles or more one can save money on awardwinning wines - an offer I found too good to refuse this week, so off I duly headed to Majestic Chichester in hot pursuit of these relative bargains.

Most of these wines were available for tasting and my fellow taster was indeed Harry, pictured far right, who seemed to have mislaid his wine guru badge, but luckily not his taste buds!

We initially tried a 2017 Olivier Dubois Tourane Sauvignon Blanc on offer at £8.99 and noted refreshing melon overtones, good minerality with a hint of green apple and concluded that this

wine is crisp, well-balanced with good acidity.

At an offer price of £9.99, a 2017 Definition Gavi had crisp citrus fruit freshness, hints of lemon rind and almonds and would be an ideal apéritif. For just £8.99, a 2017 Blind River NZ Sauvignon Blanc proved to be gooseberry-packed, fruit forward oozing soft tropical fruit flavours with a lingering after-taste - a lot of bang for your buck!

Finally, for £13.49, a 2017 Les Tuilières Sancerre from the hail-ravaged 2017 harvest demonstrated that even in difficult years growers can produce a wine of good quality with citrus, apple and elegant minerality.

Harry next unearthed a veritable sparkling gem in the form of a L’Extra Langlois Crémant de Loire Brut on offer at just £10.99. This wine was tickety boo, an effervescent jolly Dee and a much better alternative to Prosecco, given its Champagne feel and dryness.

Quite creamy, elegant with a whiff of elderflower, exuding subtle fruit and delicate fizz added to a soft yeasty note from maturation on its lees, this sparkler is unsurprisingly owned and produced

by Bollinger and it shows!

Less concentration on reds this week because of the unseasonal heat, I would like to commend the 2017 Léon Perdigal Côtes Du Rhône which, in fact, exceeds its appellation in terms of smoothness and fine red fruit flavours - a good buy at £7.49!

The Definition Malbec on offer at £9.99 is decidedly plummy with smoky fruit and a great barbecue wine, but my favourite red on offer was the 2013 Beronia Rioja Reserva on offer at a lofty £1499 and, having been matured in

mixed French and American oak barrels, has thus complex flavours of wild fruits, chocolate and leather with hints of clove, fine tannins and good length. This silky smooth dry number merits your utmost consideration. Olé!

Community News & Views FOUR out of ten people around Bognor Regis and Chichester are ignoring bowel cancer screening tests.

The latest NHS figures show the coastal West Sussex area has one of the highest uptakes of the free examination that has the potential to save lives. But the response rate of 62.76 per cent the third best in Kent, Surrey and Sussex - still means some 38 per cent of residents are not bothering to take part.

The NHS bowel cancer screening programme can detect the disease at an early stage in people with no symptoms when it is easier to treat and there is a greater chance of survival.

Deborah Alsina, chief executive of Bowel Cancer UK, said: "It's quite simple. Bowel cancer screening saves lives. I would encourage everyone who's over 60 to take the test, and for those who are younger, to encourage their loved ones over 60 to complete it. It could save yours or your loved one's life.

"Bowel Cancer UK joined Beating Bowel Cancer to create a future where nobody dies of bowel cancer.

"We're determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by the disease.

"Taking part in screening is the best way to get diagnosed early when treatment is more likely to be successful. Early diagnosis really does save lives."

Anyone who is registered with a GP and is aged 60-74 will receive a test in the post every two years. It is carried out at home and comes with step by step instructions.

The test looks for hidden blood in poo, which could be an early sign of bowel cancer. Almost 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer yearly in the UK. More than 16,000 people die from the condition annually to make it the nation's second biggest cancer killer.

The highest uptake of the test is around Horsham at 65.3 per cent and the lowest is 55.2 per cent in Dartford.

CYCLISTS will pedal across the stunning South Downs to raise vital funds for charity.

The Pedal For Paws South will return to Canine Partners's regional training centre in Heyshott on September 30.

It will see cyclists riding across the South Downs Way to raise money for the assistance dogs which the charity provides.

This will be the third staging of the event. Julie Graham, who took part in the first one, said: "The dogs do amazing work and er really do change the lives of people they are partnered with.

"Don't worry if you've not done any training as there is a shorter route and a longer route. So, take whichever one you fancy and just give it a go."

Dozens of participants are expected to take part in the event to raise vital funds for the charity's work in training dogs who transform the lives of disabled people to boost their confidence and independence. Last year saw more than 100 pedallers take on the routes.

The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks. They include picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and can fetch help in an emergency.

Bognor Regis resident Kerenza Holman, pictured above, is encouraging people to take part in the ride. Routine surgery left her with post traumatic stress disorder, which has led to myalgic encephalopathy and eventually needing a wheelchair. She was matched with her canine partner, Whisky, in 2012.

THOUSANDS of young people across Sussex will be protected by a new contract.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the five-year deal to provide the community and school aged immunisation service for babies, children and young adults aged up to 19.

The contract began at the start of this month and includes vaccinations in schools and clinics across East and West Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

Siobhan Melia, pictured above, the trust's chief executive, said: "I am delighted we have been awarded this contract by Public Health England.

"We are committed to ensuring that families, babies, children and young adults across Sussex get access to vital immunisations to protect their health. This decision shows the high regard in which this service is held.

The community trust also runs Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital and employs more than 5,000 staff to provide medical, nursing and therapeutic care to 9,000plus people a day.

"Our Snowdrop nurses and counsellor make a real difference to the lives of children who have a lifethreatening or terminal illness.

HELPING the armed forces has brought the University of Chichester national recognition.

The university has been acknowledged by the Ministry of Defence for its commitment to supporting those who sign up to defend this country.

Military officials will present the institution with its employer recognition scheme silver award for its backing of reservists, cadets, instructors, veterans and families of service personnel.

The award will be given on a ceremony on HMS Victory in Portsmouth in September. It comes just six months after the university was given the MoD's bronze decoration.

Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Catherine Harper said staff and students at the university were extremely proud to fly the flag in support of the nation's serving men and women.

"It is an honour to be granted this prestigious award in testimony of our dedication and commitment to our armed forces who play an integral role in the safety of our country.

"The experience and loyalty that reservists and veterans bring to our institution, through leadership, team ethic and communication skills, is immense.

"The University of Chichester is always open to armed forces personnel who want to partner or study with us," she said.

The MoD's employer recognition scheme was launched in 2014 and rewards employers with bronze, silver and gold accolades for advocating support for the military.

The university was presented with the second tier award after it met specialist criteria and signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

The agreement shows its commitment to the men and women, and families, who have served and continue to serve their country.

They include the university's employees who serve as reservists, such as Dr Sarah Needham-Black, pictured below, a communications operator with 71 (City of London) Yeomanry Signal Regiment and research fellow at the university's Institute of Sport.

She said: "Being a reservist has given me the opportunity to learn new skills, knowledge, and enhance my personal qualities, and now I feel more self-assured. The university is extremely supportive and I've been able to apply many of these skills in both my civilian and military careers."

University director of human resources, Lissie Whitaker, said it was proud to have received the recognition.

RURAL crime cost West Sussex nearly £375,000 last year.

New figures from NFU Mutual this week showed quad bikes, all-terrain vehicles, tools, machinery and equine equipment were the most sought after items in 2017.

Alastair McAloon, NFU Mutual agent in West Sussex, said: "Countryside criminals continue to become more brazen and farmers are now having to continually increase security and adopt new ways of protecting their equipment.

"Social media is fast becoming the new eyes and ears of the countryside. By keeping in close touch with neighbours and police through local farmwatch schemes, country people can play a significant role in identifying suspicious activity and bringing thieves to justice.

"Fitting gates to prevent easy access to farm yards and drives is one of the most effective measures.

"High-tech security such as movement detectors, infra-red cameras and 'geo-fencing', which triggers an alarm if a farm vehicle moves off the premises, can also play a part."

The £373,168 cost of crime in the county was a 14.7 per cent fall from the previous year to buck the national trend. Crime figures in NFU Mutual's latest annual rural crime report revealed the UK saw a 13.4 per cent rise in the cost of the offences in 2017.

The report also revealed limited police resources and repeat attacks were the biggest fears for people in rural communities.

Many were forced to change their lives due to a fear of crime.

Church's centre in town is hub of community Salvation Army has become established though the time of its arrival is uncertain HOW MANY of you travelling into town via Canada Grove and the Queensway notice The Hub of the Salvation Army? For many the words Salvation Army means War Cry, no drinking, helping the homeless and an unusual uniform. However, there is far more to their work than just this.

We should first look at the history of their existence in the town. Initially, the town was covered from Westergate by their large group.

But what of Bognor?

A newspaper report of February 13, 1932, talked of ‘Bognor Regis raided by the Army’ - this announcement was the notification of the arrival of the Salvation Army to the town.

Numerous newspaper reports and articles confirm this event, but in 1978 a letter to The Editor of the Bognor Regis Observer mentioned that the Army had arrived in the town before the 1914 war. Gerard Young also believed that the Salvation Army was in Bognor from about 1903.

The newspaper correspondent recalled that before 1914 he could remember seeing members of the Salvation Army attending a meeting in Essex Road.

He said the band could be seen marching to a meeting hall at the end of Steyne Street, ‘upstairs over the barber’s shop facing Canada Grove'.

In 2002, I was given a letter written by a missionary then living in Cape Town, who had started her work locally. She recalled a meeting room in the Drill hall in Bedford Street, where you had to duck through a hole in the wall, as she put it, causing much difficulty to the base player. She also remembered using, for a short time, a room in the Picturedrome.

Returning to 1932 and the major coming of the Salvation Army into the town, they ‘held a festival that heralded their arrival’, which was presided over by William Fletcher JP, who for many years was involved in numerous activities throughout the town. All the local free churches supported this opening ceremony. Their premises were situated in Spencer Street and in some reports it was claimed to be above a grocers shop.

As the Salvation Army grew in strength in the town, it became necessary to look for new premises. One report during 1959 stated that the Army were looking for premises in Longford Road. However, this proved to be unobtainable, as they were to be banned from playing any musical instruments, except the piano and organ within these buildings.

appealed against the decision.

The need for space continued and it was with great interest that they heard that the Baptist Church, who had premises in Canada Grove, were seeking new, larger premises in Victoria Drive, and their premises became available for purchase in 1964. The Salvation Army agreed to purchase the vacant site, and it became their new home.

Lt Col David MacMillan claimed, at a meeting with the Bognor Regis Council, that ‘this is indeed a notable day, and one that makes history for the local branch of our world-wide movement'.

The Army had felt that for a number of years their work had been held back locally by the lack of suitable accommodation.

The building and the adjoining manse, at its rear, were bought for £13,500. A public appeal was made to raise the money for its purchase and also for the provision of other necessary items and volunteers.

This new building contained two large halls, one equipped as a chapel for worship and adult activities, with an adjoining hall for the activities of the young.

The manse was soon converted into two self-contained flats. The opening ceremony was held on January 9, 1966, and the congregation at that time exceeded 200 people.

The Salvation Army has remained on the corner of Canada Grove and the Queensway since then. They now have a charity shop in the Queensway, which helps with fund-

raising. The organisation has many members and volunteers who quietly help the less able.

In recent years work has been carried out on the church, the manse has also been fully integrated into the original church building.

The whole construction has been tastefully decorated and transformed into a 21st century enterprise.

Each area has been planned for multi-use; even the ‘church altar’ can be dismantled to allow the area to be used for events like training courses, presentations and meetings.

There is a kitchen, which is used for functions and a maze of offices used by various charities and organisations servicing the Bognor Regis area.

My impression is not of a religious premise but of a centre that has been built and more importantly equipped with materials for the help and caring that is required in this modern world.

This can be seen by the further enlargement, not only in structure but also from the way the Army are now fully integrated and dedicated to helping those in need within the community.

All in all a vibrant working hub serving the local community and a far cry from when town's central branch was situated at Westergate.

But in the 21st century their work is even more important, so when you see the collection tin, spare a thought for those who need their help.

Practical and Emotional Support Lead Volunteer – Macmillan Cancer Support Lead volunteers support local Macmillan staff to coordinate a group of Macmillan volunteers who deliver practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer. Typical activities can include: assisting the recruitment and support of a team of practical and emotional support volunteers; coordinating referrals and meeting with potential service users; matching volunteers with service users; and completing straightforward administration and recordkeeping. This role involves working unsupervised in the community. Event Fundraisers and Box Collectors (Bognor Area) – RNLI The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea; they provide, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. They are looking for volunteers to help with events for fundraising.

helping with fairs or RNLI box collections; perhaps involvement with events at the Lifeboat Station or Town parades and special events. Either occasional or regular commitment is totally acceptable. Bognor Regis look to keep winning PostSport run going after narrow Bridges win BOGNOR REGIS are on the hunt for their fourth win in a row as their ascent up the Division Two table continues.

Ryan Maskell's side head to third-placed Billingshurst tomorrow (12.30pm) with a top half finish well in their sights.

A third consecutive victory was sealed by the narrowest of margins last weekend, when they defeated Three Bridges by just one wicket.

Those 30 points lifted Bognor up to sixth in the ten-team division. A further victory tomorrow and Maskell's side will be nearer the top of the table than the bottom.

The victory over Three Bridges was built on an excellent bowling display led by West Indian Marquino Mindley. Opening the bowling, he produced a sparkling spell of quick bowling to take 6-30 and contributing to Three Bridges being dismissed for 154.

Bognor started their reply well as Maskell (48) and Josh Seward (50) put on 87 for the first wicket. However, a mini-collapse saw them lose eight wickets for 41 runs and left the bottom three batters to guide Bognor home.

Number 10 Joel Baker (16) proved to be the hero, hitting the winning runs to seal a nail-

biting victory.

Fellow Division Two side Chichester Priory Park face a crunch match against thirdbottom Ansty (12.30pm) as they look to seal their league status for another season.

Matthew Geffen's side have won just once in five matches, a run of form which has seen them slip down the table.

With four matches to go, Chi are fourth bottom and in need of victory away from home tomorrow.

Priory go into the match off a morale boosting draw to high-flying Haywards Heath last weekend. After being set a target of 255, a century from opener Simon Hasted (101) and 72 from number 3 Matthew Bennison put Chi in with a shout.

But a flurry of wickets meant that, with the overs ticking down, they were left hanging on and only survived with one wicket in hand.

In Division Three West, second-placed Pagham will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they head to leaders Goring tomorrow (12.30pm). Half centuries from Rico Webb (61) and Jack Stannard (52) were not enough to prevent a six-wicket loss to Slinfold last time out.

DARTS: A 132 out-shot from Aldwick Legion's Larry Chant was the highlight of week 12 of the Bognor Summer Darts league.

The shot during a comfortable 12-4 victory helped Legion leapfrog over second-place BRSA Ravens and give them a seven leg lead at the top of Division Two. With one match of the season to go, it would take a real implosion in the final match for Chant's side not to take the title.

In Division One, The Legends continued an impressive year, outrunning Hunston Hares 12-4 to extend their lead at the top.

The leaders in Division Three are QE2 Devils, who suffered a surprise loss to second-placed Newtown Clubbers with Graeme Dutton the star performer for the victors. Here are the results in full:

MIDDLETON CC can play a major part in deciding the Sussex Premier Division title this weekend when they head to in-form Eastbourne.

Sean Heather's side have been muchimproved in recent weeks, dragging themselves clear of the drop-zone.

A run of three matches undefeated was brought to an end last weekend after a 50-run home loss to Preston Nomads.

Only overseas player Mahesh Rawat (71*) showed his true form against the visiting Nomads, who have under-performed this season and currently sit mid-table.

But despite the defeat, Middleton are still comfortably above the drop-zone, sitting two spots and more than 60 points above the relegation places.

With just four matches of the season to go, Heather's side know that one more victory should be enough to secure their Premier Division status for another season.

To secure that win tomorrow, though, at

Saffrons (midday) against an Eastbourne side that has not lost in five, will require Middleton to rip up the form book.

Heather will be hoping his side can pick out the positives of a disappointing defeat to Preston Nomads at Sea Lane.

After losing the toss, Middleton wasted no time with the ball and reduced the visitors to 56-4 with Russell Talman (3-31) a particular nuisance.

But a 154 stand for the fifth wicket between Kashif Ibrahim (71*) and Tim Moses (89) took Nomads to a total of 231 for 6.

In reply, Middleton made a solid if not spectacular return. Josh Wood (19), Jack Dawling (25) and Heather (27) laid a strong foundation for the innings.

And after the fall of Patrick Colvin (27), the match was hanging in the balance with Middleton at 124-5.

But, even with Rawat anchoring the innings, the rest of the side collapsed and the home side lost their last six wickets for 57 runs.

BOWLS: The annual Jim Lorimer Wings Appeal Open proved to be a big hit at RAFA Bowls Club in Bognor with 22 teams of three taking part.

Held on Waterloo Square, the annual event, sponsored by Kevin Holland, Funeral Services, is organised by the RAFA 381 Bowls Section to raise funds for the Wings Appeal.

The winning team, The Lollipops (Shirley Kitchen, Janet Fulbrook and Kate Hopkins) were presented with the trophy by RAFA life vice-president, Irene Lorimer.

Runners-up were The Forgetfuls (Geoff Cook, Jenny, Gibson and Alan Charlesworth), and third were The Misfits (Barbara Reardon, Beryl Charlesworth and Trevor Moore.)

A fabulous raffle, RAFA Teddies, and a whisky raffle all contributed to the funds raised for Wings and thanks were given to sponsors and local businesses for their support in supplying prizes.

GOODWOOD bosses have hailed an 'excellent week' as tens of thousands of people flocked to Glorious for the festival.

The five-day feast of racing saw some of the finest horses in the world battle it out on the fabled South Downs course.

The highlight of the week was a second consecutive Goodwood Cup for John Gosden's Stradivarius.

The four-year-old reeled in Torcedor to seal the win on Tuesday to mean its connections are in line for a ÂŁ1m bonus if the horse can win the Lonsdale Cup at next month's Ebor Festival at York.

Gosden said: "He got the job done. This is not a track where you want to give a rival too much rope, but all's well that ends well. Congratulations to the second for making it such a fantastic race."

Racing also delivered notable victories for Battash (King George), Wild Illusion (Nassau), Lightning Spear (Sussex Stakes) and Cross Counter (Gordon Stakes).

The week was rounded off with a win for Gifted Master by a short-head victory in the ÂŁ250,000 Qatar Stewards' Cup. Trainer Hugo Palmer needed

some convincing about the win, saying: "I wasn't sure we'd won until I saw the slow-mo!"

Mark Johnston took the leading trainer award with four wins over the five days while Ryan Moore was top jockey.

Nearly 100,000 people attended the Chichester course over five days of racing.

While that number was down on last year, officials were delighted with the reaction.

Alex Eade, general manager of Goodwood Racecourse, said: "We have enjoyed an excellent week, aided by the beautiful weather.

"The racing has been superb across all five days, with some brilliant performances from the likes of Battaash, Wild Illusion, Dark Vision and Cross Counter.

"Stradivarius winning his second Qatar Goodwood Cup was a major highlight, as was Lightning Spear, a real Goodwood favourite, landing his first Group 1 in the Qatar Sussex Stakes.

"The atmosphere across the course has been really relaxed and trouble-free. Racegoers have been giving us some wonderful feedback, with the new Champagne bar being extremely well-received."

CHICHESTER City get their FA Cup campaign underway off the back of two wins from two to start the season.

Miles Rutherford's side head to Southern Counties East Premier side Bearsted tomorrow (3pm) in the extra preliminary round of the world's oldest cup competition.

Chi will be full of confidence ahead of the trip to Kent after kick-starting their SCFL Premier season with two wins out of two.

First was a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Newhaven at Oaklands last weekend.

A penalty from Dave Herbert and debut strike from Tiago Andrade sealed the win for Chi against the only team to do the double over them last season.

It could have been more for Rutherford's side with Scott Jones having a goal ruled out for offside and new signing Gicu Iordache spurning a golden opportunity after rounding the goalkeeper.

The Romanian made up for it on Tuesday night when he bagged a brace in a 6-0 victory over Hassocks. Scott Jones, Herbert, Jimmy Wild and Rob Hutchings grabbed the other goals. It leaves Chi top of the table and full of confidence ahead of the trip to Maidstone.

Sids stall in Bailey's first game A NEW kit, new logo and a new manager was not enough to inspire Sidlesham to victory on their return to SCFL Division One. After making the short move up the road from Selsey, Steve Bailey's first game at the helm of the Recreation Ground side ended in disappointment as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Mile Oak. After two first half strikes for the visitors, a Ben Mepham goal with ten minutes to go gave Sids hope of bagging a point.

But, playing in a smart yellow and blue kit with a new logo emblazoned on the shirt, the

young side were unable to find an equaliser.

Bailey, though, will be buoyed by what was a positive performance from a young side who have only spent a few weeks playing together.

Next up for Sids is a trip to Steyning Town tomorrow (3pm) in the Peter Bentley Cup. Fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey also suffered defeat in their opening match of the season.

In front of a crowd of more than 150, Pearce's side dominated possession but just could not convert their chances in what was a frustrating match for Selsey.

Blues will hope a home match against Billingshurst tomorrow (3pm) in the cup will help register the first victory for their new manager.

SCFL Division Two side Bosham still have a few weeks yet before their season gets underway.

Fixtures released this week have thrown up an opening day trip to Roffey for the Robins and new manager Dennis Hughes on August 18. The delay was because Brighton Electricity FC won an appeal to be included within the division for the coming season. * Chichester City Ladies round off their pre-season preparations this weekend when they welcome Championship side Tottenham Hotspur to Oaklands Park (Sunday, 2pm).

Aaron Smith's side kick off their second season playing third-tier women's football when they host Oxford United on August 19 (2pm).

Before then, though, the National League South side will welcome a Spurs side who play one league above them and are pushing for a place in the Women's Super League.

Chi will hope to put up as good a performance as they did last weekend when they were defeated 2-0 at Lewes.

Pagham pick up where they left off PAGHAM'S perfect start will be put to the test as they take on FA Cup debutants in the extra qualifying round.

The Lions have picked up where they left off last season by chalking up two wins from two to begin the SCFL Premier season.

A 3-2 success at Peacehaven & Telscombe was followed by a 3-0 victory against Lancing on Tuesday evening. Those six points put Pagham joint top as one of four sides with perfect records and underlined their promotion aspirations for the coming season.

Next up is a trip to Aylesford in Kent to play K Sports in the extra qualifying round of the FA Cup (3pm).

On paper, the Lions will be firm favourites for the match against a side which is making

its first appearance in the FA Cup. Pagham will also want to keep up their record of making it into the first qualifying round in each of the past four seasons.

But they will need to be on their guard as K Sports won their opening match in the Southern Counties East Premier against Erith Town, the side that defeated the Lions in the FA Vase last year.

Joint managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds will be looking to their strikers to keep up their good form.

Victory at Peacehaven was sealed by goals from George Gaskin, Ryan Davidson and Dan Simmonds. Gaskin, Simmonds and Callum Overton were then on the scoresheet as the rain came down against the Lancers.

Pearce vows Rocks are ready as stage is set for new season Next Game

HARINGEY BORO (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is confident his side will give a good showing this season as the Bostik Premier season gets underway.

After months of hard work rebuilding the squad following relegation from National South, Rocks' campaign starts at White Hart Lane in north London tomorrow against newly-promoted Haringey Borough (3pm).

That will be followed by a home match against Surrey-side Merstham under the lights at Nyewood Lane on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With a host of young fresh faces, and a new coach alongside him in the dugout in the shape of former Premier League striker Robbie Blake, many would be forgiven for thinking that confidence would be sky-high.

But, when asked if there were any targets for the season, Pearce has drily said he hopes the club can avoid relegation.

That comment was perhaps said to manage expectations and lift the pressure on what he admits is one of the youngest squads he has put together in many years.

Regardless, Rocks fans will be disappointed if they are not at the business end of the table this season.

Pearce said: "We're happy with how things are going.

"The lads are in good shape and we're looking forward to what's ahead."

A host of new faces have come into the club over the summer, including Harvey

Sparks (Worthing), Marley Ridge (Havant & Waterlooville), and Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge (both Portsmouth).

The biggest question that remains is over the Rocks goalkeeping position.

Dan Lincoln has held the number one shirt for the past two seasons and impressed many with his shot-stopping ability.

But, as with last season, the future of the Berkshire-based stopper has been unclear throughout pre-season as the 23-year-old looks for a club which is closer to his Home Counties base.

Lincoln, who has been fitting in training alongside his appearances on the cricket pitch for Middlesex Seconds and Berkshire, did appear between the sticks last Friday in Bognor's last pre-season friendly at Gosport.

But, with the Rocks also considering a number of options, at the time of going to press, no announcement had been made about who will appear during the first week of the season.

At the other end of the pitch, it seems the new additions will ease the goalscoring crisis of last season, where Bognor netted an average of less than a goal a game in the league.

Pompey loanee Smith netted twice in the 3-2 win at Gosport while right back Calvin Davies continued his fine pre-season form by scoring the other.

Thieves target Nyewood Lane NYEWOOD LANE is all set to host the Rocks' first match of the new season - but the club suffered a setback when thieves broke in to the supporters' club shop.

The incident took place overnight last Saturday and saw an Acer laptop, Huawei tablet computer and an LG TV taken from the lock-up in the ground.

Police were informed and anyone with information is asked to come forward.

Supporters were urged to keep an eye out for anything suspicious and advised that any Rocks merchandise being sold was likely to be linked to the break-in.

Writing on social media, a club spokesman said: "Although a lot of things have been taken the loss isn't huge as it can all be replaced. It's just a few weeks of not needed hassle getting things back for the new season."

Fans have rallied around after being informed of the incident - with reports of a television being carried through the town centre reaching the club.

A Rocks spokesman said: "The offers of help and items to replace what was stolen have been amazing and from the bottom of our hearts we thank you all so much for your kind words and assistance."

WELL, after weeks of waiting we are finally here - tomorrow the Rocks will get their new season underway.

It's been a few weeks of hard preparation but I think Bognor are ready for everything the Bostik Premier brings.

The final pre-season game against Gosport Borough saw the Rocks finish up 3-2 winners in a relatively even fixture despite the scoreline.

I have to say that we took our goals very well and Pompey loanee Dan Smith proved he can find the net after scoring twice in this Hampshire versus Sussex match.

Calvin Davies got the other goal and he is proving to be at 100 per cent at the moment which is great momentum going into the new season.

It was funny seeing Pat Suraci and Joe Lea back playing for Gosport Borough, who have also brought in Matt Tubbs among others to bolster their line up.

Suraci scored a goal as well, hitting one in off the post.

Time will tell if we will ever see him back at Bognor.

Talking to their tannoy announcer and press man, it seems that Gosport had a similar season to us last year - not winning many games and struggling to get results at home.

Judging by this performance, though, and the players they have brought in, they must be in for a better season this year.

Bognor are doing all they can to bolster as well but it seems we can’t really compete with teams with larger budgets, no matter where these players come from Hopefully, as this column goes to print, we have managed to tie down a goalkeeper for the season.

I would like it to be Dan Lincoln but I am unsure as I write this whether he has committed or not. Dan can save us 15-20 points in a

season with his shot-stopping ability and commanding presence in the penalty box. I know the fans want him to stay and fingers crossed, he does just that.

Others that have impressed me so far are Jimmy Muitt, Doug Tuck and Harvey Sparks.

Muitt is looking good out wide on the right and getting the crosses in and, if he chips in with the odd goal, then all the better. With a game Dan Smith, we look like a threat going forward, particularly on the counter.

I agree with most that Tuck is more beneficial higher up the field, linking with the likes of Sparks who makes great runs in attack while also backing us up defensively.

But Tucky’s tidy play along with Tommy Block helping in defence latching on to loose balls also helps to calm the team at crucial moments.

My worry for this season is that the depth is not quite there to deal with injuries or suspensions.

But I still believe we will have a better season, despite the fact we have lost some big players in the team. I haven’t seen much of Marley Ridge in midfield so far but hope he has a good season with us.

I am on the Rocks on Tour coach trip to Haringey Borough tomorrow and will see you on it if you are going!

I hope to go to most away games this season. It would be great to see as many Rocks fans go to away games this season.

Haringey is a new club for me. I have never been to the Tottenham neighbours before so it's all very exciting.

Congratulations to Harvey Whyte on his captaincy and our new player-columnist for the season. Go get them Harvs!
