Poverty prompts suicide fear EXTREME poverty is causing Bognor Regis residents to consider suicide. A leading member of one of the town’s foremost fundraising charities said the individuals’ dire situation was forcing them to think about taking the desperate step. Richard Johns is the chairman of the fundraising committee of Bognor Regis Lions Club. He said he had received two big appeals
for help from its Wenceslas Appeal, which is aimed at helping people get out of fuel poverty. “I don’t have the funds to pay these appeals. I was hoping we would get through to November or December without having to use the appeal,” he said. “But, now, we have got these two appeals for £550 in total. We would be very grateful to receive any donations to
help to pay them. “It is surprising how much fuel poverty there is in a prosperous area like this. Most of it is hidden beneath the surface. “It can make people not want to go on. There is no hope of getting out of the situation and they can feel what’s the point?” The Lions set up the Wenceslas Appeal two years ago. Mr Johns said: “It enables pensioners
who receive their winter fuel allowance from the government and don’t need it but have no means of giving it back to donate it to us so we can help families who can’t afford to pay their fuel bills. “We never see the recipients. They come to us through a respected third party who we trust to vet them. We just need to know they are deserving. "Once people get into debt, the See page three
