Anger at new railway bridge OFFICIAL complaints are to be lodged

by Bognor Regis residents about a new footbridge near their homes.

THe homeowners in Ivy Lane will be submitting their protests to Arun District Council over its handling of the plans for the bridge.

THe council raised no objection to Network Rail’s plans when they were revealed some two years ago.

THis enabled the railway infrastructure

owner to continue with its proposals to replace the current outdated bridge.

But the residents claim the plans will devastate their lives. THe bridge, they claim, will wreck the privacy of some properties and wipe tens of thousands of pounds off the value of their homes.

One of the protesters, Andrew Goodwill, alleged: “THere is nothing we can do to stop the bridge. THe only thing we can do is to complain that Arun made

the wrong decision.

“People have invested their money into their houses. THey will lose some of that money because of the council’s decision and people can see into their houses from the new bridge. THat has reduced their value, even if they can then sell them.”

THe council has a three-step complaints procedure. THe first stage sees the complaint investigated by

the department which made the original decision. THis is followed by an investigation led by another department of the council.

If complainants are still unhappy, they can ask the Local Government Ombudsman to look into the matter.

Citizens helping to change lives COMMITTED young people from around Bognor Regis have been raising awareness of a charity which helps their peers.

THe ten members of the latest National Citizen Service (NCS) programme spent their final two days highlighting the work of Esteem. THe good cause is based in Shoreham and it is seeking to expand its support across the county.

THis consists of helping those aged 1426 when they have run out of other offers of help. Some of its clients are leaving care homes. Others have mental health problems.

One of the young people, Mia Evans, 16, said: “THey try to engage them and build up their wellbeing.”

Her fellow NCS member, Emily McNestrie, 16, said: “One of the ladies involved with our scheme went to a meeting where Esteem was mentioned.

“THey didn’t know much about them.

We had no idea either and we wanted to raise their profile and thought they needed more recognition.”

THe ten members of the citizen course spent the last two days of their fourweek programme phoning, emailing and visiting businesses with information about esteem.

THeir first week saw them enjoying a challenging residential visit on the Isle of Wight and the second week at the University of Chichester.

THe final two weeks concerned their work promoting Esteem.

Emily said the course had been worthwhile. “It’s brilliant. You get to meet new people you would not necessarily be around every day and you do new and interesting things,” she said.

Mia added: “We’ve been going out with each other all the time, even when we don’t have to. It’s been good making new friends and learning new skills to get ready to go to college or sixth form.”

THe other course members were Alastair Brown, Charlie Cogger, Josh Stevenson, Joe Delaney, Susie Walden, Leo Ede, Holly Kandice and Misho Atanasov.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb visited NCS members at their Phoenix Centre base in Bognor Regis to give his support for their work.

He heard how the programme helped to develop its participants' life skills, resilience and wellbeing, and boost community engagement.

"It was hugely enjoyable meeting the latest successful groups working with West Sussex County Council to take part in this year's NCS. "All have made friends and gained enormous experience in new areas of life."

About 200 young people in the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton area take part in NCS each year.

National Citizen Service is a voluntary personal and social development programme for 16 and 17-year-olds in England and Northern Ireland.

NEW VOLUNTEERS are being sought to ensure a major Bognor Regis event survives.

THe helpers are being asked to attend the annual meeting of the town's Armed Forces Day committee at 7pm next THursday in the Regis Centre.

THe Armed Forces Day is run in partnership with Bognor Regis Town Council but the event is organised and delivered by volunteers.

A spokesman for the committee said: "Some of these, after several years of giving their time and expertise, are now stepping down from the event and new members of the committee are needed.

"THe committee needs people who are willing to get involved in the organisation of the various elements that make up Armed Forces Day, beginning now and ending with the delivery of the event in June next year."

Anyone who thinks they might be able to help has been asked to attend the meeting and talk to the current team behind the event. One of the roles the committee is seeking to fill is that of secretary and co-ordinator.

Armed Forces Day typically takes place around the pier. It involves cadets, current service personnel and veterans and a range of activities.

f Supporters of the Aldingbourne Trust celebrate the new building's opening A PIONEERING charity looked to the future as it celebrated its past at its Aldingbourne base.

THe Aldingbourne Trust opened its three-storey conference centre at the Aldingbourne Country Centre it operates as it marked its 40th anniversary.

THe new £4m building has a range of environmentally friendly features alongside its role of enabling the trust to continue its work supporting people with learning difficulties to have the same chances as everyone else.

Debbie Wells, its external communications officer, said: "THe trust has really thought about the environment while planning the new building.

"Recycled tyres have been used in the decking out of the front of the building.

"THe biomass boiler, that runs from waste wood the wood recycling team

have collected, provides underfloor heating and hot water.

"THe trust have made good use of the wet days as rainwater is being harvested which will provide water to flush the toilets and roof-mounted solar panels feed electricity into the National Grid."

THe conference centre was some four years in the planning. Its facilities include touch screens, hearing loops, smart screens, a sound system and conference call technology. It also boasts an acoustic ceiling to dampen ambient noises and provide a real feeling of space.

THe people the trust supports were also at the forefront of the trust's thoughts.

"We know how important it is for families to be able to enjoy a great day out," said Ms Wells. "Over a quarter of a million people need Changing Places toilets to enable them to get out and

about and enjoy the day-to-day activities many of us take for granted.

"So, in the new building, there will be changing facilities that anyone with a disability can use."

THe centre's opening celebrated the day in August 1978 that Mavis Miles, Susan Evershed and Paddy Whiteside decided to go it alone for their sons who were at a Mencap rural training unit for boys near Yeovil.

THe boys schooling was nearing its end and no funds or work opportunities were available for them. THe parents joined together to lease 15 acres at Aldingbourne House, a 60-bed holiday home for patients with a learning disability, run by Surrey Health Authority.

THey had no experience of training or horticulture but made a success of their new venture.

THe structure has areas of heavy spalling (where water has entered it) and exposed reinforcement along with multiple areas where concrete repairs have been undertaken, due to its condition it has been classified as life expired.”

THe design life of the new footbridge will be 125 years. It will have provision for ramped access and will be higher than the existing bridge.

Network Rail staged a drop-in session at St Mary’s Church Hall in Church Lane last THursday.

Some 50 residents went along in the first half of the two-hour event. Mr Goodwill was among them. He said: “We are incensed Network Rail can go to the council for a scheme which will really disrupt all our lives and we have no redress whatsoever. We have no right to object to planning permission.

“Network Rail have not asked us about this or consulted us. THis is the first consultation we have had.

“THey wonder why we are so upset by this. THis is all about getting the railway ready for over-head electrification. THe current bridge is too low for it.

“THe plans do not show our houses.

THey are talking about swinging the new bridge over our homes. People will have to be put in hotels while they do it, which is bonkers.”

One of his neighbours, Deborah

Geall, said: “We will lose some £30,000 off the value of our house because of this bridge. We have had it valued and it is worth £220,000 now and we will only get £185,000 with the new bridge. THat’s if we can find anyone who wants to buy it and look at that eyesore. THis is also about our security and our privacy.”

Frank Jolly, another Ivy Lane resident, said: “THe plans we have seen say they are no objections. Of course, they aren’t because nobody knew about them.

“THis is all wrong. Not only are people losing value in their properties. We are also losing our privacy which is even more important to us.”

Lesley Coverdale-Lee, who also lives in the road, said: “Network Rail wanted to put their welfare block on private land which is owned by five houses.

"THey have just said they didn’t look into whether the land was privately owned. THey thought it was an area of Tarmaced land which was available – and it’s not."

An Arun spokesman said a 2015 planning act stated certain works did not need a planning application.

"THis includes applications by Network Rail, required to fulfil its duty to maintain and enhance the operational railway and its assets.

"THe council can also confirm that the general permitted development order does not require the local authority to consult with local residents and this means that yellow notices or newspapers advertisements for the proposal are not needed," he said.

` Prisoner caught A PRISONER wanted by police to be returned to prison has been arrested in Bognor Regis.

James Hollingsworth, 35, had been sought for breaching the terms of his release licence.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police had issued an appeal for his whereabouts on August 22 and on Friday evening (August 24), following several calls from members of the public in response to the publicity, he was spotted by officers in Bognor town centre and was arrested after a short chase.

"He is being returned to prison.

Our thanks go to the people who called in with information which led to this offender being arrested."

` Hub moves closer LISTED building consent has been sought for detailed works to create a creative digital hub in Bognor Regis railway station.

West Sussex County Council wants to install a mezzanine floor in one of the two waiting rooms at the station which will become the hub.

It also wants to create private meeting rooms or offices in the spaces and install two toilets and two kitchens. Heating, ventilation and an air conditioning plant are planned for the station's exterior.

Arun housing is criticised A NATIONAL watchdog has criticised Arun District Council for failing to ensure its tenants are safe.

THe Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) said the local authority had neglected to find out the risks in its properties.

THe safety officials revealed Arun lacked a programme of fire risk assessment for its taller buildings until 2016. It had only carried out assessments when it received reports of problems.

THe studies have since started but the regulator said Arun had not acted on all the issues which they had revealed.

It had also failed to monitor water safety at the premises.

THis led the RSH to decide Arun had breached one of the national home standards which have been set by the government.

Its regulatory notice states: "Both fire safety and water safety are self-evidently important because of the potential for serious harm to tenants.

"In this case, the regulator has concluded that the risk of serious harm is demonstrated because of the large number of tenants potentially exposed to an unknown risk of danger over a long period of time. THerefore, the risk of serious detriment has existed.

"THe regulator will work with Arun District Council as it seeks to remedy this breach and will continue to consider what further action should be taken, including whether to exercise any of its powers."

Cllr Matt Stanley, a Lib Dem councillor for Marine, said: "I was appalled to hear

about the health and safety breaches at Arun. My main concerns were with the fire risk assessments and the staggering lack of pro-activity.

"THese are very basic procedures and it is worrying that, although these issues are now apparently being worked on, we still had the situation (fire) at Steyne Street only a few weeks back.

"To be clear regarding Steyne Street, no plan was in place, none of the repair work or communication with residents was done until Cllr (Francis) Oppler got involved. I truly hope that the lessons have been learned."

Arun has some 3,500 properties from west of Bognor Regis to east of Littlehampton.

For fire safety, it has to meet the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to regularly assess the risk of fire in the properties it maintains.

Having identified the hazards and people at risk it also has to take precautions to lessen the risk.

THe same situation applied to water safety and the council's requirements to assess the risks of the exposure of its tenants to legionella.

"Arun has now developed a programme to carry out those risk assessments but, until that work is completed, it cannot fully implement measures to control any risks to tenants," the OSR's regulatory notice says.

An Arun spokesman said it recognised the seriousness of the situation and was working with the regulator to provide evidence the breach was being rectified and the safety of its tenants was paramount.

Newsagent hands over shop to end decades of early mornings LONG-SERVING Aldwick newsagent Ashvin Patel has sold his last paper.

Mr Patel and his wife, Kalpana, have retired from the Tudor Newsagency & General Stores after more than 31 years of serving their loyal customers.

Mr Patel, 69, said it had been strange not opening their Aldwick Road business at 5am on weekdays.

"People wanted to buy their papers before they left to work in London and so we would serve them," he said.

"I'm still getting up at 4.30am like I did then. I expect it will take my body clock a few months to adjust because I never needed an alarm clock."

Mr and Mrs Patel held a thank you party at their store for their customers on their

last day earlier this month.

"It was a sad day when we left. I still miss it. I enjoyed every minute of running the shop," he said.

Mrs Patel had been in charge of the sub post office inside the shop until it was closed by the Post Office along with many others some 15 years ago.

She then joined her husband serving in the shop. Business had generally been good apart from the year when Morrisons opened in the former Ship Inn opposite, said Mr Patel. He was sure small shops like the newsagency still had a good future.

New owners have taken over the store.

Mr and Mrs Patel, who live nearby, moved to Tudor Newsagency from a grocery in Hampstead in North London.

Bid to boost water quality

DOG OWNERS have been urged to stop messing up Middleton’s sea water.

THe first campaign of its kind in the coastal south-east region saw those who take their four-legged pets for walks urged to bag and bin their mess.

Southern Water joined forces with Arun District Council to launch their joint initiative on Wednesday.

A grant from the water company as part of its £1.2m investment has enabled the council to fund more enforcement patrols to issue on-the-spot fines to owners who allow their dogs to foul its beaches, parks and open spaces. THe money is also paying for more signage, more dog poo bins and an advertising campaign to drive the message home.

Two of the dog owners at the event were Elmer couple Andy and Brian Deamer, with a Canine Partners’ training dog, Zia. Mr Deamer said: “It’s a great campaign, if people observe it. We see dog fouling on the pavements and verges near where we live. It is a problem. It’s not nice, especially on fields like Shrubbs Field where children are playing.”

Mrs Deamer said: “THere so some people who put the mess in a bag and leave it behind a pillar. THey should take it to a bin. It only takes a minute.”

Arun handed out doggy bags with reminders of the campaign and has launched an online video to make people think twice about ignoring their dog’s mess.

Cllr Clive Gammon, the council’s chairman, told those at the launch at the seafront greensward off Sea Way: “THe vast majority of dog owners in the district are responsible. But the few are spoiling it for the rest, so we need to get the message across that it is not acceptable to leave your dog’s mess lying around.

Arun’s Middleton councillors, Paul Wotherspoon and Barbara Oakley, both attended the launch.

Southern Water has also investigated other sources of pollution in Middleton and found misconnected properties, damaged sewer pipes and excess water run-off from farmland. It is tackling these.

'End witch-hunt' - call CAMPAIGNING Elmer resident Colin Rogers is calling on the prime minister to stop hounding British army veterans.

Mr Rogers has launched a petition to demand an end to the witch-hunt investigations against soldiers who served in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 80s.

He has also asked THeresa May to introduce a statute of limitations to ensure the former soldiers are no longer hounded in their sixties and seventies, some 40 years after their active service.

Mr Rogers said: "I keep reading articles about this issue in the national press and it seems to me shocking that army veterans, who in any other country would be treated as heroes, are being hounded in this way.

"Most of these men are aged in their seventies and should not be subjected to this treatment."

THe issue of former soldiers in Northern Ireland having to account for their actions in its Troubles some 40 years ago has been featured in national newspapers. Former council officer Mr Rogers, 66, said the soldiers' treatment contrasted with the pardon granted to some IRA members as part of the

Good Friday Agreement which ended the fighting.

He has gathered at least 70 signatures so far and has approached the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP, Nick Gibb, for his support.

Mr Gibb has twice raised the matter with the government's under-secretary of state for Northern Ireland, Lord Duncan of Springbank.

"I think there are three government departments involved and it is probably only Mrs May who can bang their heads together," said Mr Rogers.

Mr Rogers is approaching people to sign his petition. He has also had it accepted on to the petition website of the government at: petition.parliament.uk/ petitions/227600 Mr Gibb has told him: "THere is a widespread view that the current system of investigations in Northern Ireland is not working and focuses disproportionately on former police officers and soldiers.

"THis is clearly wrong and does not reflect the fact that the overwhelming majority of those who served did so with great bravery and distinction and complied fully with the law."

` Felpham picnic A CHANCE to enjoy top quality jazz with a picnic is being repeated in Felpham this weekend.

Jazz at the Village has joined with the Felpham Village Conservation Society to stage the second of the open air occasions.

THis year's free Picnic in the Park, backed by the Post, will take place at 4pm on Sunday at Old Rectory Gardens.

It will be a chance to take along a picnic, drinks, chairs, rugs and blankets to enjoy some jazz led by Julian Marc Stringle, described by the late Sir John Dankworth as ' the best clarinettist to appear in British jazz for decades'.

` Grant for centre A BOGNOR Regis centre has been given £80,000 to help women who are suffering from domestic abuse.

My Sister's House in London Road was awarded the funding by Katy Bourne, the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

Founder and chief executive Julie Budge said she was pleased with the recognition of its work in supporting 600 women since 2014.

Residents bid to save beach CONCERNED Climping residents have banded together to try to save their coastline.

THe villages have formed the Climping Beach Conservation Group to bring in £1,000 to pay for an expert study of the vulnerable shore.

THey have launched a crowdfunding appeal and will be holding a dog fun day on September 22 to kickstart their efforts.

One of the group’s founders, Carol Cashfield, said: “THe existing beach defences are coming to the end of their natural life and a lack of government funding to replace them means that there has been dramatic and accelerated erosion.

“THe storms during the winter of 2017 have completely eroded the local public footpath, a breach of the sea defences and overspill of shingle on to adjacent land.

"THe community is raising funds to halt this worsening situation and, ultimately, to find a way to save Climping Beach for the enjoyment of everyone.”

THe Environment Agency decided about three years to do the minimum amount of work along its Climping frontage. It said limited justification existed to invest central government funds to continue to maintain the defences.

Shingle is moved around the beach by the agency each year to try and protect it.

THe beach is one of a dozen or so strategic rural gaps around the coast of the UK to provide an oasis for wildlife in the mainly urban region.

Mrs Cashfield and three other residents decided to see if they could improve the

situation by setting up the conservation group.

“We want to try and help preserve this environment for wildlife, pets and people alike,” she said. “We aim to identify a more permanent and meaningful solution to protect the beach.

"THe first stage of this community project will be to examine the possible options available to help preserve the beach and its environment and report back. THis is a project that is being driven by volunteers who care about this beach and the environment around it and want to ensure, as far as possible, that remains as it is today.

“We want to ensure that it remains a haven for wildlife and remains a special place for future generations to visit.”

One of the special features of Climping beach was the fact it was accessible to everyone around the year, she said.

She said: “A lot of beaches don’t allow dogs but that is not the case at Climping.”

Horse riders also go on the beach and it is a magnet for holidaymakers and locals alike. If the group succeeds in raising funds for the report, its members will consider their next steps if recommendations are made for largescale works to protect the beach.

“We know £1,000 is just a drop in the ocean but it is a start,” Mrs Cashfield said.

THe fun dog day at the beach will include a flyball show by Sussex County Dog Training. Dog competitions and games will also be held. THey will include My Dog’s Got Talent, best young handler, doggie dash, an egg and spoon race and a fun scurry.

Fair will offer jobseekers the chance to get expert advice THOSE seeking work or training could find the help they need at the next Arun Skills and Job Fair.

THe free event will be a chance for residents to get support on issues which they may feel are a barrier to work, such as improving a CV, interview skills, training and childcare options.

THe fair is hosted by West Sussex County Council's Children and Family Centres and Find It Out centres along with Bognor Regis and Littlehampton jobcentreplus.

It is being held from 10.30am-1pm on September 13 at the Wickbourne Centre in Clun Road, Littlehampton.

Residents who go along will get the chance to meet employers face-toface and receive tailored advice and support.

Cllr Paul Marshall, the county council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "Previous events have all proved extremely successful and even people who were a little apprehensive about coming along have benefited from the expert advice on offer.

"You never know - this could well be the first step to rebuilding your confidence and finding employment or the training you need."

AWARD-WINNING pie maker Phil Turner has thanked the customers at his Bognor Regis shop for inspiring him.

Phil, the managing director of Turner's Pies, says gauging the response to his company's mouth-watering baked goods inspired him and his team to create Britain's tastiest pies and expand the company.

Turners Pies' steak and ale pie was voted the supreme champion at the British Pie Awards in March. THe judges gave it a score of 99 out of 100 ahead of more than 950 entries.

THe family-run business, which was started in Bognor Regis in 1933, has now answered the demand for its pies by opening a four shop alongside its original outlet in Hawthorn Road and newer ones in Chichester and Rustington.

Phil said the latest store - in Broadwater in Worthing - is because of the support of Bognor Regis residents.

"We owe a lot to our loyal customers in

Bognor. It's where it all started all those years ago when my great grandparents, Eva and Reginald Turner, started a business in a hotel in the town.

"THe same applies to our customers in Chichester and Rustington and now we have expanded and moved into Worthing too.

"We're delighted to open the shop in Broadwater Street and have been overwhelmed with the warm welcome we've had from everyone.

"It has a vibrant, village feel to the area and we've already encountered a lot of positivity. We're eager to meet new customers and get their feedback on our pies, including everything from steak and stilton to mushroom and asparagus."

Worthing mayor Cllr Paul Baker cut the ribbon on the new shop and said he was already aware of the appeal of the pies.

Gary's set to walk charity marathon A BOGNOR Regis man who has survived cancer is set to walk a marathon to help others overcome the condition.

Gary Broughton will be taking part in the Shine London 2018 walk in aid of Cancer Research UK next month.

He will join 1,000 other walkers at 10.15pm on September 22 to follow the 26-mile route of the London Marathon.

Gary, 46, said the event would also be a celebration of his survival of a tumour in his left thigh.

He said: "I went to see the specialist three weeks ago and he said I didn't need to see him any more because he had cut out the whole tumour.

"I feel ecstatic about that. I couldn't believe it.

"THat's why I want to do this walk.

I know a lot of people have lost their lives to cancer. But, if we can get a cure through events like this, there will be fewer of them in the future."

Gary, of West Street, said he expected to complete the walk in about six hours.

He was put forward for the event

by Cancer Research UK after he had completed a 29-mile walk between Brighton and Bognor Regis piers two months ago.

He raised £426 from his solo effort and is hoping to better that in London.

"I have entered on my own," he added, "but I am sure I will team up with other walkers along the way."

Felpham's fun day to return FUN ON the Prom returns to Felpham tomorrow.

THe annual free family event held by the parish council takes place from 2pm until 9.30pm on the seafront near Blakes Road.

Its attractions will include a huge variety of children's entertainment, a sea rescue demonstration at 3pm by the RNLI and coastguard, emergencies permitting, and music.

From 6pm, there will be live music from duos HnD and Cloud9, hot food from the sailing club and a red, white and blue firework display at 9.15pm as part of the commemorations of the centenary of the end of the First World War.

THese will also feature a competition to dress in 1918 style and a minute's silence led by the Rev John Challis, of St Mary's Church in Felpham, before the fireworks.

Cllr Gloria Moss, the parish council's vice-chairman, said: "Early in the day there will be a great variety of children’s attractions with different types of music including a steel pan artist.

"THe evening concert show will include both world renowned artists and the best of local talent."

Fun on the Prom will be followed the next day by a picnic in the park from 3.30pm-6pm in Old Rectory Gardens by Felpham Village Conservation Society and Jazz at the Village in Felpham.

Kites make fine sights as festival is soaring success at its new home KITE festival organisers were flying high after the success of their first event in Felpham.

THe bank holiday weekend occasion attracted thousands of visitors and saw dozens of kites soaring into the sky.

Even the dire heavy rain and strong wind on Sunday failed to dampen the spirits of the committee behind the attraction.

One of its members, Jan Malpas, said it was a case of up, up and away at the new venue of King George V Playing Field.

“It has been a fantastic festival. It has been a spectacular occasion, the music has been good and people have been telling us it has been a brilliant festival.

“THey want us to be here every year. It’s just been wonderful,” she said.

THe festival was held for the fourth time and began in West Park in Aldwick. But a clash of dates with the long-established illuminations gala saw the switch to the playing fields in Summerley Lane where surrounding residents who spoke to the Post were enthusiastic about its return.

Felpham Parish Council chairman Cllr Dave Smart set the tone when he formally opened the festival last Saturday morning. He told those present he looked forward to the festival returning in 2019 and for many years into the future.

Mrs Malpas said she hoped that would be achieved with the support of the site’s owner, Arun District Council.

“We want to be coming back here,” she said. “We have got everything here – a nice choice of food, fantastic stalls

of goods and charities and wonderful entertainment. THe kite fliers have come from the north, east and west.”

“THere’s plenty here for all the family and it’s all for free. THis is three times the size of West Park and that extra space has made a lot of difference.”

THe area between the stage and the kite-flying arena was crammed with spectators in Saturday’s fine weather as at least 20 kites of all - including a 200ft whale - and busy again on Monday.

Sunday was a wash-out, however. A couple of stalls and the Great Bognor Bake Off marquee were blown away and the ABBA tribute band was cancelled. A couple of dozen hopefuls turned up after the conditions improved in the evening but it had been impossible to make the stage safe.

Monday saw westerly winds of about 11mph and an overcast sky to send the kites flying again. A giant Superman, an over-sized penguin and a brown bear were the most eyecatching.

But the 20 or so kites in action at up to 60m high came in all shapes, sizes and colours.

Kite flier Steve Frankin, of Lewes, was putting his tricking kite through its paces with a dramatic range of movements.

“I work in a noisy environment and late hours, so this is a good way of exercising and being out in the fresh air,” said Steve, 50. “It gets me going to different pieces and meeting the other kite fliers.

“THis is my first time here. Hats off to the organisers for putting on this free

event. THere’s a lot of good stuff here and they deserve a lot of praise.”

Andy Nelson, 60, of Southampton, who was showing a sled kite designed to lift a series of tails on his return visit to the festival. He said: “THis is very relaxing and better than being sat at home watching TV. THis is a much better venue. THere is more room here.

“I would say this is a medium-sized festival. Portsmouth’s is bigger but it’s an international festival but I will definitely be coming back here again.”

Visitors also tried their hand at flying kites. Felpham resident Rachel Stimpson, 36, was there with her husband, Russell Stimpson, 37, and their children, Millie, nine, and Henry, six.

Mrs Stimpson said: “THis is a bit of fun with the children and it’s a sense of achievement when you get the kite flying and keep it up.”

Millie said: “It’s kind of exciting when you see it flying and it goes higher.

You get a real satisfaction out of it. It’s exciting as well but it can be scary when it looks like it’s going into the trees.”

David Toscano, 41, of Hove, was there with his son, Feo, three. He said: “THis is very soothing and keeps children entertained for a good amount of time. I think it’s something which is handed down from generation to generation forever. THis is a lovely event and it’s a good day for free.”

` Food hygiene call FOOD hygiene ratings should be put on display, West Sussex residents have demanded.

A county council survey showed 98 per cent of the more than 600 people who took part wanted businesses to be made to show their ratings.

It also showed that 41 per cent would not eat at a business that did not display its rating voluntarily and 57 per cent would only buy from a business rated 4, (good) or 5 (very good).

Ratings range from 0 (urgent improvement required) to 5 (very good) and are typically given to places where food is supplied.

THe results of the poll will be used to influence local food businesses and encourage them to improve their rating.

It is voluntary in England for food businesses including restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and hotels.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “THese results are incredibly interesting and show just how important food hygiene ratings are to West Sussex consumers.

It clearly shows the standards expected of food businesses and will hopefully encourage those who fall short of the higher ratings to book a place on one of our courses and learn how to improve.”

Peter Aston, West Sussex trading standards team manager, said: “THese results show it makes commercial sense for local food businesses, not only to secure a high food hygiene rating but also to ensure it is prominently displayed."

THe next course run by trading standards with Horsham District Council's environmental health officers is on October 12 in Worthing.

Alice's cakes are winners CUPCAKES proved a winning recipe for Bognor Regis baker Alice Cocks.

THe three varieties Alice, 11, served up at the latest Great Bognor Bake Off competition won her the prize as the best young cook.

Alice said: "It feels good to win. I didn't expect it. I made a chocolate cup cake, a chocolate chip and vanilla one and a vanilla cake.

"It was quite easy to make them. I enjoy making cakes. It's relaxing and fun.

"I prefer making food for other people to share. It's much more enjoyable than eating it myself. I have cooked dinner at home sometimes."

Alice's success maintained her place at the top of the competition's childrens' category after she clinched first place with a Victoria sponge in last year's inaugural event as well."

Her mother, Kate Cocks, 51, claimed second place in the Granny Knows Best section for her sausage rolls.

THey were based on her mother's tradition of baking sausage rolls and serving a glass of fizz on each of the 50-plus times she moved home in her life.

"You have to have decent sausage meat to make a good sausage roll and it's also important the pastry is not too fatty," she said.

Mrs Cocks also came second in 2017 with her flapjacks.

A total of 22 mouth-watering entries were received for the latest competition held on the final day of the Bognor Regis Kite Festival on bank holiday Monday.

Organiser Sarah Boote-Cook had the difficult task of judging them along with one of the Bearded Bakers, Rhys Spirovski.

Mrs Boote-Cook said: "We had some good entries this year for the Great Bognor Bake Off. THe standard in the novelty cake class was really spectacular. We were so impressed

with the effort people had made.

"Unfortunately, we lost our marquee in the wind yesterday. Felpham Methodist Church very kindly rescued us and we held the event in there today."

WHEN I moved to Bognor, nearly 20 years ago, the thing that struck me was the community spirit.

I quickly got to know my neighbours and it felt like London in the 50s, where everyone looked out for each other and you could leave your front door open, which I have done by mistake.

I was dashing out to work and came back home to find my front door still open and everything the way I left it.

Over the years I have had this reaffirmed many times. THere was a night in Aldwick, when I travelling home, I noticed a gentleman stumble and fall over.

Stopping my car, I called an ambulance and waited with him.

What was surprising was how many other cars stopped and ask If I needed help. At the time I remember posting on Facebook what a great town I lived in and how happy I was bringing my children up in such an environment.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon when I received a call from my friend saying that he’d parked in the Martlets car park and he left his van there but had received a call from Sussex Police to say his van had been involved in an onsite collision.

Apparently, at approximately 3.35pm, a driver and his passenger, driving a navy blue VW Passat estate decided in their infinite wisdom to reverse their vehicle into my friend’s van, hooking their bumper on to his tow bar, which involved them dragging the car around the car park, until the car was eventually released, resulting in it going into another car and

THe drivers then made their getaway leaving much destruction behind. As you can imagine, the poor van was no more, may it RIP, as was the other party’s Shogun.

However, although the police were called and CCTV was available these perpetrators are still on the loose. My friend’s first thought was ‘THank God, no one was hurt’.

THis is a popular pub frequented by both families and the elderly. THankfully, no one was walking across the car park at the time. So, I am appealing for the great community spirit to find those involved and report them to the police, if you have any information please contact Sussex Police.

Ladies steal show at races

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk LADIES donned their hats, fascinators and pretty dresses to attend Ladies Evening at Fontwell Races last THursday.

THe afternoon began at 3pm with races starting at 4.40pm with the NetBet Sport Handicap Hurdle Race and Irish Mr Fickle pulling in for first place.

Drama came in the sixth race, Yeoman's Honda Handicap Hurdle Race, with jockey Mark Grant on Whatthebutlersaw almost coming unseated over the last fence but still managing to oversee close competition from Sensible Friend to pick up the win.

After an afternoon and evening of racing, best dressed lady and Miss Fontwell winners were announced.

Tilly Hewitt was crowned Miss Fontwell 2018 courtesy of Fontwell Park's partners for the day, Gunwharf Quays.

Tilly won over £1000 worth of prizes, including a £500 Gunwharf Quays voucher and an overnight stay at Gunwharf Quays Spinnaker Tower Sparkles Package.

THe best dressed award was given to Tara Willard. She won £1000, a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of prosecco Back by popular demand, tribute act, ABBA Revival performed on stage after the races and kept the crowds dancing the night away.

Melanie FIsher attended with friends Sarah Day and Natalie Court. She said: "It's great here because it's so much fun but also relaxed and great value too!"

THe next fixture is the Family Fun Day on Sunday, September 9 with seven thrilling races, a petting zoo, children's disco and fairground rides and kids entering for free.

VOLUNTARY groups across Bognor Regis and Chichester will benefit from a new website.

THe online help will be available from Voluntary Action Arun & Chichester (VAAC) from tomorrow.

THe website will enable the charity to showcase the support and advice it offers to charities and community groups in the area - and enable its members to access its free resources more easily.

Jenny Holmes, VAAC's senior admin and communications officer, said: "We love how colourful and cheerful our new website looks.

"It is much more interactive and responsive to users. THere's even a dedicated members' area where our members can access some of our free resources, such as fact sheets and our monthly funding focus."

VAAC received backing from the Big Lottery Awards for All fund for the new website after feedback that the old site was outdated.

THe group, based in Bognor Regis Town Hall, supports voluntary and community organisations in Arun and Chichester.

DONNINGTON Gardening Club faced the prospect of having to cancel its main show of the year because of building works at the parish hall.

Frantic re-arrangements and dropping the home produce classes will see the show taking place at 2pm tomorrow albeit without the aroma of home cakes and bread. THere will still be displays of fruit and vegetables, handicrafts and photographs.

Fireworks still light up town's weekend HUNDREDS of spectators turned out to watch the traditional bank holiday fireworks in Bognor Regis - a day later than planned.

THe 10-15 minute display from the pier lit up Monday night to the delight of some 1,000 people who stretched along the seafront to West Street.

THose who arrived before the 9pm start were treated to an hour's entertainment from Celebration Samba.

Its 20 drummers pounded out a series of rhythms in front of the pier to make up for missing out on leading the illuminated parade the previous night.

Gala organisers at Bognor Regis Seafront Lights arranged the last-minute occasion after their Sunday procession was washed out by torrential rain and strong winds.

THey were rewarded with £317.82 donated on the night. Secretary Greg Burt said the group was pleased to be able to salvage a public occasion from the disappointment.

"I am delighted by the number of people who've turned out. THis does show the effectiveness of social media to get a message out quite quickly to a lot of people that the parade was cancelled and we hoped to have the fireworks tonight.

"THe fireworks organiser and the first aid man were both available and Celebration Samba, pictured right, were keen to come along as well. THat meant we could stage an impromptu event - and the number of people here shows it was worth doing.

"I would expect we will be about a few hundreds down from the cancellation of

the gala night," he said. "We will have lost all the donations from the spectators but that is balanced to some extent by saving money on the costs of the night."

He said he did not expect the loss to make a difference to the group's running of the seafront summer illuminations.

"THis is the first time in the 15 years we have been organising the gala that we've had to cancel it. We've had wet days before but it has always dried out in the evening.

"We had no choice but to cancel the event. Some of the entrants put their displays together beforehand and they would have been wrecked by the weather.

"THe participants would also have been soaked getting ready for the parade and our name is on the health and safety documents. If a child was injured because a sound system blew over, it would be our responsibility," he said.

It was late Sunday morning the cancellation was announced with southsouthwesterly winds of up to 44mph and heavy rain forecast until 7pm and light rain for a further two hours.

A statement from Bognor Regis Seafront Lights said: "It is with a heavy heart that organisers Bognor Regis Seafront Lights make this decision, but the health, safety and well-being of all involved: participants, contractors and spectators is our foremost concern.

"We particularly feel for all those entrants who will have put so much effort into preparing to dazzle us..."

One entrant who still went along on Monday in his LED costume to light up

the crowds was James Ware, who expected to be part of the Raving Roller Crew.

James, 38, of Middleton, said: "I thought I would come along and support the organisers and, hopefully, encourage people to make a few donations.

"People seem to like the costume and keep wanting to take photos of it. So, that has to be good."

Children enjoy summer fun FUN-PACKED days on Bognor Regis seafront could be restored to their full timetable next year.

Requests from parents who took their children to this year's reduced schedule of Funshine Days could lead town councillors to go back to the traditional calendar.

Kirsten Fitzpatrick, the council's events officer, said: "THe general concensus from speaking to people at the latest events is that they would like to see five sessions a week for four weeks again.

"I will make that recommendation to councillors and it will be up to them if we hold that number of sessions in 2019."

THe last Funshine activities for this summer saw bubble magic, Caribbean drumming and Caribbean dancing workshops.

f Children enjoy one of this year's final Funshine Days the bandstand to the Regis Centre because of rain. But Ms Fitzpatrick said the days had been a big success overall.

THis year's events were reduced to three days a week for three weeks because town councillors wanted to stage a roller rink on the Place St Maur instead.

But these arrangements fell through at the last minute because the operators were unable to fulfil their obligations.

As an alternative, an extra three days of Funshine events were staged. THe sessions included donkey rides, open air art and magicians.

In West Park and Avisford Park, record numbers saw the Play Ranger sessions attract hundreds of young people with their parents.

THe 12 morning and afternoon sessions on Tuesdays and THursdays saw an estimated 600 families go along to the

A spokesman for the playworkers said: "THis event grows year on year. It is an opportunity for children to enjoy doing what they want to do when they want to do it and not being controlled by adults.

"We have had some fantastic days this summer. THe first two weeks, when it was boiling hot, we had 200 people on the inflatable ring, 30 on the woodwork and 20-30 enjoying arts and crafts."

Lisa Leggett, of Chichester, took her two children - Charlie Paice, nine, and Danny Paice, six - to a session each week.

"Everything is close together and the children can just go on and just be kids," she said. "It's free and it's outside."

Bognor Regis resident Emilia Butfield was with her son, Rhys Butfield, nine.

"THese events are very good. THey provide a lot of activities for children on different equipment," she said. "My son has also made some new friends."

` Drop-in cafe starts A DROP-in cafe is being launched in Pagham next week.

THe first of the sessions at St Ninian's Pagham United Reformed Church will take place from 10ammidday on Tuesday.

Others will follow at the same time on the first Tuesday of each month at the Pagham Road church.

Associate minister, the Rev Janet Hopewell, said: "We welcome anyone who fancies a cuppa and a chat and we aim to be dementia friendly.

"THere is no entrance charge but we will welcome any donations to cover our costs."

` Ukulele session NEXT week sees another chance to learn how to play the ukulele and appear at the Southdowns Folk Festival in Bognor Regis.

THe latest Making Your Mark session will take place from 10.30am-midday on Wednesday at the Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane.

THe ukulele players will be among the performers at the festival, which is being held around the town centre from September 20-23.

` Vehicle break-ins SIX REPORTS of vehicle break-ins around Bognor Regis were reported to the police last week.

THe locations in which they occurred included Spencer Street and the Fitzleet multi-storey car park in the town centre.

Veteran to take plunge for wounded soldiers f Dodie Tombs

Dodie's dancing entertains homes TAP DANCING Dodie Tombs has been busy showing her skilful footwork to the residents of care homes in Bognor Regis.

As reported, she offered to visit the homes to give free shows and get their residents moving where possible.

Four care homes took her up on her offer and she has delighted them with her displays of dancing. One of the homes immediately asked her to return because her display was so popular.

Pensioner Dodie said: "It's been lovely dancing in the homes. THe guests like a singalong as well and so I take along some CDs and my husband plays them.

"THey clap their hands and some of

them get up and have a jig. THey have various levels of mobility but they all absolutely love it."

Dodie and her husband, Don, live on the Roundle Estate in Felpham.

THey moved there five years ago after returning from 20 years on the Costa del Sol. During the couple's time in Spain, Dodie taught tap dancing at six international colleges in the coastal area. She and Don went on a cruise earlier this year and Dodie decided to get active again. She volunteered to take two tap dance classes and more than 40 passengers attended each one. THis led her to offer to visit care homes and she intends to carry on for as long as they ask her.

A WOUNDED veteran is preparing to take on the world's highest assisted parachute jump for charity.

83-year-old David Bland, who lost his left eye while serving with the Wiltshire Regiment, will take the 19,000 feet plunge at Skydive Franz, in New Zealand to raise money for military charity, Blesma, THe Limbless Veterans.

David, who started SPR Centre in Fontwell Avenue in 1969 has already completed other challeneges for the charity, including two abseil challenges down the Spinnaker Tower and three separate jumps from 13,500 feet.

David said: "Blesma's men and women fought for our country and now need help via Blesma to alleviate their serious injuries caused by their effort and bravery.

"Contrary, and with little, if any, media coverage they are still arriving back home from Afghanistan with very serious injuries and need your support via Blesma."

David is hoping to raise £5,000 for Blesma when he does the jump on Tuesday, September 4.

Blesma, THe Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants.

It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.

Picking your own for health benefits RECENTLY when we have been on our cycles around the countryside, all you can see is the early ripening of berries on the bushes.

One of my favourite things to do with the children this time of year is go blackberry picking, whilst discussing what we are going to make with them. Jam, crumble, pies, freeze them, add them to fresh juice and smoothies, or simply eat them for a snack? I love that a delicious food, such a blackberries has such incredible health benefits too.

THe blackberry lands itself high on the most antioxidant-rich foods list, as well as containing so many nutrients, this delicate, but delicious berry contains at least a third of the daily recommended value for important nutrients and has been found to fight everything from premature skin aging to aggressive cancers. It has a rich history and is readily available this time of year.

So, what is so special about the blackberry?

One of the most widely researched health benefits of blackberries is their ability to work as a cancer fighting food. THe reason for this is most likely due to the rich antioxidants and polyphenols, a class of antioxidants known for their cancer-fighting abilities. Specifically, anthocyanin (a particular polyphenol) is found in high concentrations in this fruit.

THe high levels of oxidative stress that cause the proliferation (growth) of cancer cells are blocked by the anthocyanins found in blackberries. In regard to lung cancer, there has been at least one study demonstrating the effectiveness of cyanidin-3-glucoside, a specific anthocyanin found in blackberries,

on the growth of cancerous lung tumours.

In general, blackberries are known to help prevent some of the cell mutation that leads to cancer in the first place. While the cause of cancer is complex and different for every person, the mutation of DNA and healthy cells in particular is what seems to lead to the growth of this disease, so eating antioxidantrich foods, such as blackberries, helps suppress this mutation.

Vitamin K may also be a factor in the anti-cancer properties of blackberries. One serving of blackberries has over a third of the daily recommended value of vitamin K,

which plays a part in helping prevent and fight prostate, colon, stomach, nasal, oral and liver cancers.

Also, the incredible nutrient load of blackberries makes them a remarkable candidate for peak mental health. Preliminary studies focused on motor skills and shortterm memory retention find that blackberries have great potential in increasing brain performance, like many other berries high in antioxidants, which is why berries are among some of the top brain foods. Short-term memory seems most drastically improved by a consistent diet of blackberries, according to certain reports.

Blackberries are very high in manganese that is one nutrient vital to brain functioning.

A notable percentage of manganese in your body is found in the synapses of your brain.

Because of the importance of manganese transmission in the brain, a manganese deficiency is linked to brain conditions like epilepsy. It’s crucial to get the proper amount of manganese in your diet in order to keep your synapses firing correctly.

It also seems that blackberries and extracted compounds from them have the ability to protect brain cells from degeneration.

Once again, this is attributed to increased polyphenol concentration in the blood.

Interestingly, one particular study on this function of blackberries noted that commercial varieties of blackberries had no effect whatsoever, while wild-grown berries

showed significant protective ability.

Because of the antioxidants touted as one of the major health benefits of blackberries, this should be one of the main foods you consume regularly to protect your body from oxidative stress and chronic inflammation responsible for a massive number of diseases.

It is thought, that inflammation is the root of all disease, and the natural process of inflammation is part of the body’s defence against harmful cells, but the western diet is especially prone to encouraging chronic, disease-causing inflammation. Blackberries naturally cause a reduction in inflammation and allow your body’s processes to happen, as they should, rather than on overdrive.

An example of the blackberry’s ability to fight inflammation is in its protection against stomach ulcers, due to the reduced inflammation of the mucosal lining of the stomach, as well as a drop in the oxidative stress that was also partially responsible for the ulcers.

Whole, healthy foods like blackberries fight inflammation, but they also help curb the free radical damage caused by oxidative stress within your body. THis damage occurs when the uncharged molecules (free radicals) that are responsible for aging and immune system function are overproduced due to exposure to the sun, too many processed foods or medication use.

You can fight oxidative stress with antioxidants like those found in blackberries and other berries (and a ton of other amazing foods), slowing the onset or development of disease and premature aging.

Blackberries also show antibacterial activity, another function by which they protect your body from disease. THey can reduce the impact of oral infections by targeting infected cells while leaving other cells untouched, making them a potentially powerful agent to treat infection.

GRAHAM Greene alludes to Brighton Rock and thus I spent much of Bank Holiday Weekend in Brighton (although hibernation was my Sunday resolution) observing the madding crowds and delighting in listening to Sam and Ren, pictured near right, busking to a packed street audience.

I find myself in somewhat unchartered territory this week as I set off in hot pursuit of wines priced at two bottles for £10, comprising several possible combinations at Morrison’s, Bognor Regis, conveniently adjacent to the town centre.

Ten green bottles is the song, but I - somewhat unusually - was able to find three white wine bottles encasing

Chardonnay.

A McGuigan (synonymous with quality) Black Label Chardonnay was my initial selection, a wine of south-eastern Australian provenance from the Murray Valley. Lively, light and luscious, this citrussy melon-lime Chardonnay with a hint of creaminess is most palatable and a lot of flavour for your dosh!

Next, a Californian Turner Road Reserve 2017 Chardonnay caught my eye and exuded pineapple, apple and lemon flavours with some sweet vanilla oak

almost conjuring up California in a glass!

My final white wine selection was that of a 2017 Rosemount Estate Diamond Chardonnay, a wine of crisp acidity allied to lemon, melon, white peach and guava flavours and fairly typical of its south-eastern Australian area!

Two McGuigan reds and one Argentinian Malbec complete my sampling this week. I must, first of all, explain the success of McGuigan wines - a combination of skilful winemaking

climate resulting in long sunny days and noticeably cooler nights.

THis particular climate is a veritable strength with long sunshine hours ensuring that the fruit ripens fully and relatively low humidity reducing incidence of disease.

THe 2017 McGuigan Black Label Malbec has rich flavours of spiced fruit added to layers of chocolate and does not remotely disappoint!

Similarly, the McGuigan Black Label Shira, also of 2017 vintage, is delectably

well-rounded with rich flavours of ripe plum, blackcurrant and spices and is eminently quaffable with a good finish classic Aussie Shiraz!

My final selection, another Malbec but this time from Argentina, was a 2017 Trivento Alzar Malbec which proved to be slightly sweet and fruity with peppery notes and balanced fruit and tannins and a good pairing with roast beef! So this weekend avail yourself of some of these low prices at a Morrison’s store near you!

Community News & Views HELPING to ensure deprived communities are kept safe is among the goals in a new action plan for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

THe integrated risk management plan 2018-22 has been adopted and assesses which areas are most likely to be affected by fires, how the service will prevent and protect them and how it plans to respond when fires and other emergencies occur.

THe document states: "Parts of Arun and Worthing in particular are noted as having a lower life expectancy, higher health and disability deprivation and overall higher multiple deprivation.

"It is no surprise that the wards with the lowest life expectancy consistantly contain some of the higher critical fire risk grades in West Sussex.

"Deprivation is clearly linked to higher risk of fires. Being a single parent, never in paid work, living on your own and being deprived were the top factors associated with higher rates of fire in the home."

Increasing numbers of older people, some with multiple long term conditions, were also factors in raising the risk of fires in domestic settings.

Gavin Watts, the service's chief fire officer, said: "We are constantly looking to improve the service to ensure we provide the best possible outcomes for the people we serve.

"THis plan sets out how we will work with the other blue light services and the county council to drive our continuous improvement."

THe action plan includes details about: • How the service will reduce risks through safe and well visits, school visits and other training; and • How it will protect the public with safer public spaces, fire safety inspections and enforcement.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said she remained confident the fire and rescue service would continue to deliver a high class prevention, protection and response service.

SWING dance school Chichester Lindy Hoppers is running four beginners' workshops to coincide with the annual Goodwood Revival.

THe group has provided dancers, pictured above, to the internationally famous event for the past seven years.

Ellie Duffett, its swing dance teacher, said: "Every year we get asked by so many members of the public 'where can we learn to do that?

"So, this year, we thought we'd hold four beginners' workshops in the week before and the weeks after this year's event."

THe four different workshops will cover the four different types of footwork used in the dance - single time, six beat, eight beat and lindy charleston.

THe lessons can be taken in sequence or can be dipped into depending on the participants' availability.

Chichester Lindy Hoppers' co-founder, Mark Whale, said: "Swing dancing is such a fun way to learn something new, meet people, keep fit and have fun.

"THere's a real scene now in the south coast and we wanted to offer a workshop specifically for those who have never danced a step and wanted to really breakdown the foundations of the dance from scratch."

THe workshops start at 2.30pm-5pm tomorrow and continue at the same times on September 15 and October 6 and 20 at the New Park Centre in Chichester.

A CHANCE to take in sumptuous views across the South Downs is being offered by a Chichester-based charity next month.

CancerWise is staging its first 20km walk through the national park to raise money for its work supporting those with cancer and their families.

THe Walk 2 B CancerWise is being held on September 29 and will start at 9am from Goodwood.

A spokesman said: "Starting from Goodwood Racecourse, this circular walk follows a section of the South Downs, taking in picturesque scenery, pictured above, and amazing views en route."

THe walk is being organised by a specialist company which offers inspiring outdoor experiences in the UK. THe entry fee is £31 for adults and £11 for under16s and those who take part will be expected to raise at least £50 in sponsorship for CancerWise.

Well-behaved dogs will also be able to join in.

MASTERCHEF 2018 champion Kenny Tutt visited Chichester yesterday to show families how to stop binning £20 of food every month.

Kenny delivered a culinary masterclass on Chichester Cathedral Green from 11am to 3pm which focused on loving leftovers by turning food which might have been wasted into delicious dishes.

His visit - along with another to Crawley on September 6 - was organised by the West Sussex Waste Partnership to reduce the mountain of meals which are being needlessly thrown away.

He said: "THere are so many great things you can do with leftovers from vibrant curries to beautiful casseroles or soups, but often people just need a few pointers to get them started.

"I'm hoping that the events...will kick start a whole new ethos across our county to stop people wasting valuable money on food that ultimately ends up in the bin."

In West Sussex, food waste makes up nearly a third of the average rubbish bin. THis is equal to nearly 20 rubbish trucks of food being thrown away daily.

THe waste partnership's Fight Against Food Waste initiative - wastepreventionwestsussex.co.uk - is aimed at encouraging residents to find out how they can reduce that waste.

In the county, 70 per cent of food waste could have been eaten at home before it was thrown away. Almost half of it is just not eaten or cooked in time and a quarter is rejected because too much has been cooked or prepared.

West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for environment, Cllr Debbie Kennard, said it wanted to stop the situation by urging residents to reduce, reuse and recyle where it was possible.

"It's hard to believe how much of the food we buy is wasted and that there are a lot of steps we could take to prevent so much of it going in the bin - like prepping and freezing food we aren't going to use and shopping smarter so we only buy the things we need," she said.

"It has become more apparent that something needs to be done and we're hoping that our Fight Against Food Waste campaign will stop people from automatically throwing food waste in the bin and will encourage our residents to think before they throw."

THe West Sussex Waste Partnership combines all the county's local authorities with the aim of working effectively together.

Bersted's present hides its hidden history Area is known as being one of the principal villages of the district ACCORDING to the 1807 guide named, ‘The Origin & description of Bognor or Hothamton and an account of some adjacent villages', South Berstead (note the spelling) is: “A village to the north of Bognor, at the distance of about a mile.

"Two ways conduct to it; one is a pathway that crosses the fields in a direct line from the Post office; the other is the high road that passes by the Crescent, but pedestrians would prefer the latter.”

THe description continues, “Berstead was a well-known village, and in some degree of repute when Bognor was still in embryo; and prior to the birth of that place was reckoned among the principal villages of the district.”

THe history of this area consists of St Mary Magdalene Church in South Bersted, which is of course one of the oldest in the area.

THerefore it did not really take into consideration the church at the entrance to the area, that of the Parish Church of the Holy Cross, which is almost hidden at the junction of Chichester Road and North Bersted Street.

A diverse church, that outwardly has an old and drab appearance, was dedicated in 1884.

THe original spire of this church was removed in 1979 but the surprise is the interior, which is a remarkably modern church, which has a very active congregation.

Other aspects of Bersted are ‘coloured’ by their location such as a busy roundabout, but colourful is the correct description of the Royal Oak public house, which was not without much controversy when it was painted red in 1984.

It is alleged that there has been a building on this site since Elizabethan times. It is a listed building and still retains much of its historic appeal since the first recorded publican in 1842. It is believed that at one time Sir Richard Hotham, Bognor’s founder, owned it.

Richard Sharpe, who succeeded in making his public house known countrywide, was connected with another pub in the area. THe Sharpe family were publicans of the Rising Sun on the Chichester Road from 1895 until 1933 and it was during this period that it became renowned for the displays that were produced by the attachment of postage stamps over the walls, ceilings and even furniture.

It was a bet that started the act of making pictures with stamps and the craze just grew, in line with the number of visitors that started to arrive. THere were even special coach trips to see 'THe Stamp House' as it was known for a time.

villages, on the outskirts of Bognor, but sadly like many small communities they have lost much of their identity with the expansion of housing, roads and the erosion of the fields and open spaces that was once enjoyed by the villagers.

As recently as 1920 North Bersted was surrounded completely by open fields. THe village of North Bersted has a number of links with the past, such as Chalcraft Lane, as the word Chalcraft is a derivation of a Saxon word meaning calves croft. THe area known as Rookery Farm was originally believed to have links with smuggling.

THe need for housing and employment drives developers to move to the ‘outskirts’ of a town or village until eventually each separate community is joined into seemingly one community, with no visible boundaries.

In the 1930s, one of the largest developments was that of the Newtown Estate, with its distinctive fish and chip shop on the corner of the shops on the bend in North Bersted.

How this estate must have dominated the area when it was built by Neal’s the Builder.

It must have been quite a shock with the number of houses and also the influx of so many people into the area at that time.

Gradually, over the years the growth of housing has crept over the area with new housing and of course the industrial estates based around the Durban Road area.

One of the major activities in this area, was that of the airfield, first in the 1930s when there were air shows put on by Sir Alan Cobham. Later in the Second World War there was of course the Bognor Regis Advanced Landing Ground, with more than 100 aircraft

and about 2,000 airmen, many of whom were Norwegians in an area where today there are plans for even more houses.

Previous articles on this area have given us some very descriptive prose on the developments taking place. One in 1973 refers to ‘Horrible Bognor, not content with ruining itself, has all but put paid to the Bersteds now, pouring inexorable and glue-like with its shapeless blobs of bungaloid developments'.

Another report, in 1978, began with the comment that ‘golden wild mustard fringes part of the A259 road between Chichester and Bognor in a landscape as flat as a bowling green and happily there seem to be no hideous gipsy encampments this summer'.

THe report continues from the road junction next to the Royal Oak remarking that, ‘this is where suburbia starts, a nondescript hotchpotch of bungalows and semis and some more pretentious houses, giving no indication at all that the English Channel lies before you only a mile and a half ahead'.

I am sure that the owners of the premises to which the writer was referring would not appreciate some of these descriptions.

THe area of course is changing considerably not only with the new houses at North Bersted, but also with the addition of the road that provides a bypass to the town, direct over to Felpham.

THe road to Felpham of course saw the construction of the newest bridge in the town – who can remember the lorries arriving in the town with the long structures for this road?

THis new road is increasingly becoming busy alongside the older routes as the number of homes continue to increase.

Volunteer Speaker/Ambassador – The Children’s Society The Children’s Society was formed in 1881 by a Sunday school teacher called Edward Rudolf. Whilst their vision remains the same ‘A world where children are free from disadvantage’, the actual work they do is constantly changing. As a result, they need speakers to go and talk in a variety of settings to make sure people are up-to-date on the work, thanked for their support and encouraged to support them, not just through fundraising, but also

through prayer and campaigning. Most talks last 10 minutes but some talks can last up to an hour. There is such a huge variety of opportunity. As a Church of England charity, many of the talks do take place in a church setting. However, they also speak in schools, Rotary Clubs, U3A’s etc. The possibilities are endless!

Middleton look to end season on a PostSport high after four consecutive defeats MIDDLETON'S disappointing Sussex Premier season comes to a close tomorrow as they welcome bottom-side Ifield to Sea Lane (11.30am).

Sean Heather's side are set to end the campaign just one place above the dropzone as too often they have come up short in their pursuit of victory.

Defeat last weekend at Horsham summed up the season so far as even a century from the skipper was unable to prevent a seven wicket defeat to the hosts.

It was Middleton's fourth consecutive loss and their tenth out of 17 league matches.

Tomorrow's match against the alreadyrelegated Ifield is a chance to put those demons to rest and end the campaign on a positive note.

Key to their chances will be Heather who scored 107 and put on 132 with overseas player Mahesh Rawat (77) in a score of 2525 against Horsham. But the hosts were rarely troubled in reaching the total, scoring the winning runs with 10 overs to spare.

In Division Two, both Bognor Regis and Chichester Priory Park will be looking to end their season on a high.

Both sides have struggled in recent weeks and, even though their league status is secured for another season,Bognor know that victory over bottom-side Bexhill tomorrow (12pm) could lift them into sixth, above Chi. THe Regis Oval side will have to overturn a run of three consecutive losses which was continued at Lindfield last weekend.

Joel Baker (35) top-scored for Ryan Maskell's side as they were bowled out for just 135. THe home side overhauled the score with eight wickets still in hand.

Meanwhile Priory Park welcome promotion-chasing St James' Montefiore to Goodwood tomorrow (12pm) off the back of a heavy 86-run loss to Billingshurst.

In Division THree West, Pagham can still secure a top-three finish - but they will need to arrest a slump in form which has seen them taste defeat in their last three games.

Stuart Hanks' side, who are fifth, head to third-placed Stirlands knowing that a win could propel them up the table.

Pagham suffered a very close two-wicket loss to Steyning last time out as a score of 165 all out was not enough. Rico Webb (3-30) was the pick of the Pagham bowlers.

DARTS: Friary Z's Lee Franklin has lifted the Bognor Summer Darts Secretaries trophy for the fourth time.

He defeated Claremont's Ian Hackett in two legs to take the crown in an excellent evening of competition at Newtown Sports Club.

THirteen players took part in the contest. Franklin laid a marker down early on when he threw two 180s in sweeping aside Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) and Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares) en route to the final.

THere he played Hackett in what was a repeat of the 2015 final.

Franklin started by winning the bullseye, and started with 81 followed by two tons.

Two large scores later and Franklin was on his double and, with Hackett left with 130, Franklin wasn't giving him any chances and hit the double.

THe second leg saw Hackett, pictured below left, get the better start, but Franklin hit a ton to catch up.

Hackett then replied with 140 to get the lead back, and eventually leave himself 56. Franklin hit 98 in reply to also leave 56, but Hackett blew his chance for the leg by busting his score.

After both players missed the out, Franklin hit the double to take the leg and match, becoming the Summer Secretaries Champion once again.

In the captain's competition, Gary Blackwood (Legends), pictured below right, also sealed his fourth crown, defeating Dave Bourne (Aldwick Legion) in what was a repeat of the 2013 final.

Blackwood took the first leg in just 14 darts with scores of 140, 120 and 125.

He didn't look back in the second with double top to take the crown again.

Tone Zone tame a tough Arundel 10k

TONE Zone's Jack Penfold led a cohort of Tone Zone runners home as a small contingent completed the Arundel 10k.

About 20 runners from the Bognor Regisbased club took part in the event, which saw runners navigate the medieval castle before circling the Duke of Norfolk's estate.

THe tough race delivered some good times for those in blue and orange vests.

And with tough tests to come in the shape of the Littlehampton 10k, Chichester Half and Brighton 10k, there will be plenty of opportunity for members to better their efforts in the coming weeks.

THe Arundel race saw runners run around the town and through the castle, before taking on the two-mile steady climb to the turning point in the race.

From there, it was a jog down towards Swanbourne Lake before turning back into the castle grounds and finishing in the town.

Leading the Tone Zone cohort home was Jack Penfold who completed the hill course in

41 minutes 6 seconds (41:06).

Next was Juliet Stallard who picked up more awards, claiming second in her age category and third lady home, finishing in 42:49.

Simon Hunt was next crossing the line in 44:55 closely followed by Daryl Fairbrother in 45:12.

A flurry of runners then came in quick succession as Duncan Stephenson-Gill (46:04), Anne Kari Enes (46:30) and Michael Manwill (46:48) all finished in 46 minutes.

Enes was also first in her age category.

Josey Faggetter was the third lady home for the club and finished just under the 50 minute mark.

Andy Miles, Martin Playford and Peter Ramsdale all achieved a sub 53 minute time while Vicky Cooper, Ben Anderson and Zoe Heremes all finished around the hour mark, followed by Stuart THomson and David Cornell in 1:01. Sarah Ashbery, Lisa Broad and Sue Hayward, in their first year of running for the club, all finished the race under 1:15.

SHORT MAT BOWLS: Infinity's Jack Rollings sealed some much-deserved silverware in a national competition featuring nearly 200 players from 11 different countries.

Rollings was part of a team of four from the Boxgrove-based club to travel to Chelmsford in Essex for the Short Mat Players Tour UK Open.

After finishing third in his group, Rollings progressed through to the Plate Competition which he won to ensure he returned to the south coast with a glittering sliver trophy.

Chris Page finished sixth in his very difficult group but ended runner up in THe Shield Competition.

Charlotte Rollings, Jack's sister, finished fourth in her group with Robin Armstrong finishing second in his group.

THe only other West Sussex player to play was Daniel Butler from Comptons, Horsham. He finished fourth in his group, making it an excellent showing from everyone involved.

THe team start their roll-up season next Tuesday at 7.30pm at Boxgrove Village Hall.

Anyone who wants to try the accessible indoor sport is welcome to come along.

Free-scoring Chi lead the way after winning four from five

Capital awaits Colley's Blues CHICHESTER RFC are set to turn to youth as director of rugby Paul Colley predicts a tough season ahead for the Blues.

After weeks of behind-thescenes preparations, Chi's first XV are set to get their London One campaign underway tomorrow with a trip to Westcombe Park (3pm).

After a good fourth place finish last time out, Blues will be looking to challenge at the right end of the table for the second consecutive season.

But, with last year's runners up Medway and Havant strengthening, plus Sussex rivals Brighton and Hove both posing a challenge, Chi will need to hit the ground running to match last season's performance.

Colley has confirmed that Blues will be led once again

by Scott Ashley, who will be supported in the coaching ranks by Mark Norton (attack) and Danny Gray (skills).

But Neil McGovern has joined from Brighton to beef up the defence - with Colley hoping he can help bring on some of the young players in the Colts set-up.

Colley said: "When I heard, that after a very successful

period with Brighton RFC, Neil had left the club I was very keen to bring him on board.

"One or two players have hung up their boots, so this season will be a chance to really push forward our youth development programme, bringing players through from the successful Colts teams of recent years.

"With this is mind we have asked the wise head of former chairman Keith Martin to stay with the Colts alongside myself."

Colley also announced that former Saracens, London Irish and Glasgow player Kieran Low will be returning to Oaklands Park in a coaching capacity.

Much of the work of the home-grown Chi player will be with the Colts, though he will also advise the seniors.

Colley said: "Kieran had a very successful professional rugby career.

"He played through the England age groups at U18 and U20 and went on to achieve full international status with Scotland.

"Having to retire early through injury Kieran is looking to put something back into the club he started with."

CHICHESTER City's unbeaten start to the SCFL Premier season rolls on as Miles Rutherford's side go into a week off sitting high and pretty in the league.

A 4-0 victory away at East Preston under the lights on Tuesday lifted them to the top of the table after winning four matches from five.

Goals from George Way, Scott Jones, Kieran Hartley and Connor Cody sealed the comprehensive victory against EP. THe three points puts Chi top, two points clear of second-place Pagham with a healthy goal difference of 13 after Chi have conceded just once in 450 minutes of football.

With other step five sides in FA Vase action this weekend, Chi have a week to put their feet up as last season's run to the last 16 of the non-league knockout competition gifted them a bye in the first round.

It is set to be a rare respite for City who are already eyeing up going deep in a number of competitions this term.

Last weekend saw Rutherford's side defeat fellow SCFL Premier side Broadbridge Heath in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup, as Way and Dave Herbert scored in a 2-1 victory.

Pagham's cup run continues

PAGHAM will be eyeing up an FA Cup windfall after securing a plum home time in the first qualifying round.

THe Nyetimber Lane side defeated fellow SCFL Premier side Newhaven 2-0 away last weekend to secure a place in the next round of the competition.

Goals in each half from George Gaskin and Callum Overton secured the win for the Lions, who have also netted an extra £2,890 in prize money.

THe next round has gifted Pagham a home tie against Bostik Premier side Whitehawk on

September 8, a Brighton-based team from two divisions higher who they narrowly lost to just a few weeks ago in pre-season.

Reverse that result in a week's time and Lions will seal further prize money of £6,000 which will be a big cash boost to the step five club.

Perhaps exhausted from their cup exploits, the Lions were unable to break down a stubborn Arundel side on Bank Holiday Monday.

THe draw leaves them second in the SCFL Premier, two points off leaders Chichester.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's surge up the table continued after the Blues chalked up two wins in the past week.

Sidlesham are also in FA Vase action, heading to Combined Counties Division One side Bagshot tonight (7.45pm) in a match which is being staged at Fleet Town.

Sids made it two wins on the bounce with a 2-0 win at Worthing United last time out, thanks to goals from Ben Mepham and Sam Agostinelli.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham boss Dennis Hughes is still looking for his first victory as the Robins welcome Worthing Town to Walton Lane tomorrow (3pm).

Confidence is sky high at Chi Ladies CHICHESTER City Ladies manager Aaron Smith believes there is more to come from his talented squad - despite the side starting the season with two wins out of two.

THe Green Army sit third in the FA Women's National South after a 3-0 win at Plymouth Argyle meant they have taken maximum points from their opening round of matches.

Next up is a League Cup derby against Portsmouth Ladies on Sunday (2pm) at Baffin Milton Rovers' PMC Stadium.

But Smith believes his side have nothing to fear against a side who have also made an unbeaten start to the season.

He said: “If you said to me at the start of the season we would come away with six points from the first two games I'd have snapped

your hand off.

“We have exceeded all expectations so far and we just want to keep enjoying ourselves and, hopefully, the results keep coming."

A first-half Molly Clark brace and an 84th minute goal from Helen Ogle secured the victory away at Plymouth.

Smith said: “We are all starting to understand this new formation and it’s exciting.

"I can assure you that there won't be many teams that travel to Plymouth and keep a clean sheet this season, so each and every one of our players deserves credit for this.

“It's early on and we aren't getting carried away. THe players are learning to trust our tactics and trust each other. THe confidence is high."

Pearce urges unbeaten Rocks to cut out the defensive errors Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has warned his unbeaten side to tighten up at the back if they want to succeed in the Bostik Premier this season.

THe Rocks continued their impressive start to life back in step three by picking up two important points away from home over the bank holiday weekend.

A 1-1 draw at AFC Hornchurch was followed by sharing six goals with Sussex rivals Lewes which ensured Bognor sit fourth after taking nine points from their first five matches.

But, even with 18th-placed Kingstonian visiting Nyewood Lane tomorrow (3pm), Pearce believes there is more to come from his young side - particularly if they can cut out the errors at the back.

He said: "It's always busy the bank holiday time especially when both games are away.

"I always consider that, regardless of the level, a point away from home is not to be sneezed at. It means that we remain unbeaten. But obviously the quality of the goals is cause for concern. Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in football so if you concede too many unnecessary goals then that makes things difficult."

THe Rocks experienced two very different draws in the packed Bank Holiday schedule.

At Hornchurch on Saturday, Bognor had the better chances in the first half and took a deserved lead when Dan Smith's header

crossed the line after a defensive mix-up.

THe home side equalised just after the break when the Rocks were unable to clear after a defensive melee.

Despite having chances to win the match, Bognor came up short - and Pearce made clear he was upset at the performance by addressing the players on the pitch after the match.

Monday's match saw the Rocks show more fight - coming from behind three times to seal a point in front of more than 800 at THe Dripping Pan. Harvey Whyte, Jimmy Muitt and a 30-yard volley from Brad Lethbridge secured a share of the spoils for Pearce's side.

THat was achieved without Keaton Wood, who was injured in the warm-up before the Hornchurch match; Dan Smith, who was recalled by Portsmouth for a one-off friendly; and keeper Dan Lincoln, who was playing in a Minor Counties cricket semi final.

THe latter two are set to return for tomorrow's match against Kingstonian.

Pearce said: "You only have to look at last weekend's results to see that everyone in this division can beat each other.

"No one is likely to run away with it as we do not have a Billericay in the league. Instead, we have a lot of teams who are all within 20 per cent of each other. If we play to our full potential, then I believe we will create more chances than them which gives us a chance."

Dan's back - but for how long?

HE'S THE Rocks' form man in front of goal.

And, despite his tender years, Dan Smith is very much a man in demand.

THe on-loan Portsmouth striker has bagged four goals in his four appearances for Bognor so far this term.

And that form is turning heads at Fratton Park as they remain clued in to how the 19-year-old number nine is performing in the rough and tumble of non-league football.

Portsmouth's interest in their young starlet was underlined on bank holiday Monday when Smith was recalled for a behind-closeddoors friendly with Swindon Town - meaning he missed Bognor's 3-3 draw with Lewes.

Despite the youngster bagging a goal for Pompey in the 3-1 win, Rocks manager Jack Pearce confirmed Smith was back in contention for this weekend's match although he warned he could miss further games in the future.

Pearce said: "It's one of the things you have to accept with loan players and we have to accept that they want to keep him involved.

"It is a shame for us and in a perfect world we would have our own players but we don’t.

"We are just grateful we have a player of his quality available to us."

IT'S BEEN a busy couple of weeks since I last wrote this column.

During that time, we have picked up five points from nine and we are fourth in the table. But it could have been so much more if we had avoided some silly mistakes at the back.

First up was the 3-0 win at home against Bishop's Stortford, a match in which I was awarded man of the match.

It's not something I get that often as it usually goes to those who score or the keeper so it was nice to get a bit of recognition at right back.

THe match was an interesting one as perhaps last season we may have lost it 1-0.

In games like that, it's all about not panicking.

If you do panic, then you end up making a silly decision which can cost the team a goal and then we are left chasing.

I think we showed that, if we are patient, we have good enough players who will end up scoring.

One of the things that we have been working on is trying to take the extra pass rather than simply shooting. With Jimmy, Brad and Dan up top too we have the players who are putting them away.

Dan I can’t talk enough about and he really will be some player if he continues developing.

I think it's easy to forget how young Brad is. He’s still only 17 and he really showed his quality in recent games. And when Jimmy's in form he really is unbelievable.

We followed up the home win with two away draws.

A point away from home is never a bad result but when you come up against the opposition and the goals you're conceding are all silly mistakes it's not easy to take.

THe goals we conceded at Lewes were horrendous but the good thing is that we're disappointed that we're not winning. THat shows that the

squad believes it should be challenging up the top, which is where we want to be.

THe Lewes match in particular was hard.

Not only was it a local derby but it took us a while to work them out as they had a strange shape. I think they will cause a lot of sides some problems this year because of that.

But once we worked them out, we caused them problems which is why it was frustrating their goals came from individual mistakes or long balls.

We had Brad to thank for the point. It was a great finish but I was more impressed with the way he won the ball.

It was a clearance and out of nothing he got his body between the ball and man which allowed him to let the ball come to him.

THe finish was then unbelievable. I could have tried that 15 times and 14 of them would have ended up miles high and wide.

We are now focused on Kingstonian tomorrow. I have played them a few times and they have always been a good side.

I think the important thing is that it is more about us and what we do.

We should be looking at what we can do rather than worrying about the opposition.

On the whole as a team, I think we are getting better definitely though we still have got a lot to do defensively.

In recent years we've had the presence of Sami El-Abd who was an enforcer.

He didn’t even need to kick the ball to have an impact on the match.

Just by shouting he organised, which is also something that players like Gary Charman and Dan Beck were able to do - run the game with their mouth.

THe teams that do well are the sides that concede the least so we need to work on that.
