Ice rink votes 'short-sighted' VOTES to reject hopes of a Bognor Regis ice rink have been condemned as shortsighted.

A call by thousands of residents for the leisure facility in a multi-use building was defeated in a series of decisions by Arun District Council’s members.

THey decisively rejected calls by the Liberal Democrat minority for further investigations, including the building of a multi-use hall, into the matter and to

look at all potential locations.

Councillors on the Conservativeled local authority instead pledged to support a return of the successful Christmas ice rink and provide nonfinancial backing to a commercial operator with a sound business case for a permanent ice rink on the outskirts of the town.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said it was wrong to push an ice rink to an out

of town site.

“THe idea of an ice rink in a multipurpose hall has been around for many years. We should be keeping all the options open. THat is the best way we can serve the regeneration of Bognor Regis and the people of the town.

“You have the vision of a mole and nothing more than that,” he said.

Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Beach) said: “THis does not commit us to any

particular design on any particular site.

It is for a multi-use facility, including an ice rink, in Bognor Regis and that means anywhere in Bognor Regis.

“We should not be ruling anything in or out at this stage.”

Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said: “We have been looking at this as a multi-use facility anyway and we will continue to look at it as multi-use."

Mobility scheme busier than ever RECORD numbers of disabled people have been using a Bognor Regis charity to get out and about.

A total of 1,464 bookings were made with the town’s Shopmobility scheme in its latest full year, its annual meeting was told.

THis is up by well over 100 on the previous year’s figures. THe unprecedented demands means more scooters are being bought to bolster the fleet, which includes 45 mobility scooters and four powered chairs at its base in the Belmont Street car park.

Annual demand at the sister service in Worthing has also risen to 1,222.

THe seven extra scooters will also help to make up for the loss of six scooters donated to the service by Sussex Freemasons six years ago.

Bognor Regis Shopmobility manager Marian Court said: “One disappointment this year has been that the Freemasons, who originally donated scooters to both Bognor Regis and Worthing, have passed ownership to Weald Mobility in Eastbourne. We have offered to buy them but they won’t accept our offer. So, we have reluctantly asked them to take them away.”

THe freemasons gave the charity six scooters for Bognor Regis and eight scooters and two powered wheelchairs for Worthing.

Mrs Court said the organisations had since put limits on the equipment’s use, like banning it being hired out overnight.

It had also stipulated only Weald Mobility, based in Eastbourne, could be

used for servicing.

After that, the freemasons said they wanted £400 for each scooter. Mrs Court offered £100, which was rejected, and the equipment is being removed this week.

“I certainly don’t want the freemasons to have a bad name,” said Mrs Court.

“We have used the scooters for six years and they have been brilliant.”

Shopmobility trustee Pat Dillon said: “I am very disappointed the freemasons, having made a donation, are taking that equipment back. THat seems ridiculous.

“I am a freemason and I know all the good work they do. To hear this is upsetting to me. I would ask Shopmobility to contact the provincial grand secretary to turn this around."

Mrs Court said the growing demand on the service had included a trend for long-term hirings for up to three months to enable customers to get out and about around their homes.

Her work is backed by ten volunteers in Bognor Regis and more in Worthing.

But, despite the growth in demand, the charity made a loss of £13,831 in the year to last March 31. Its treasurer, Ray Golding, said he was confident the situation would be improved in the current year.

Arun District Council chairman, Cllr Alan Gammon, who is involved with Littlehampton Shopmobility, said: “THese are difficult times we are entering at the moment with grant providers tightening their belt and being more selective.”

A SPECIAL meeting to consider the future of two distinctive Bognor Regis buildings was cancelled because of a lack of councillors.

Only one member of the six-strong planning and licensing committee of the town council turned up for the extraordinary session. THree councillors are needed to ensure the committee's decision are legally valid.

THe meeting was called for 10.30am on Monday in the council's usual meeting place of the council chamber in the town hall. It was due to discuss overturning the committe's decision in July of making no objection to the plans

by developer B5 Ltd to demolish the two and three-storey buildings at 2-4 Waterloo Square.

Cllr Jeanette Warr (LD), the sole committee member present, said: "None of us wants to see the buildings go but our decision had to be made on the information we had."

Objections have since been raised by heritage organisations and officers. Two town councillors have also objected.

One of them, Cllr Matt Stanley (LD), also turned up on Monday. He said: "THe applicants have not provided any financial information to back up the claims in their application."

Mr Slaughter is nearing the end of his second week in charge of the academy and said he already knew what he wanted to achieve there.

"I will be working tirelessly, alongside our dedicated team of staff and our sponsor, Ormiston Academies Trust, to improve student outcomes at the academy," he said.

"Our standards our high, expectations clear and we pride ourselvces on making a difference to the lives of our young people by nurturing and supporting them throughout their time at Six Villages and developing them into lifelong learners.

"Alongside our close relationships with

the surrounding primary schools, I am keen to continue to engage and work closely with the local community more widely.

"I would like the Friends of the Six Villages and Parent Forums to be well utilised, to create opportunities for students within the community to give something back to the local area.

"I will soon have some exciting news to share with regards to supporting a local charity, too."

Mr Slaughter was appointed to the Lime Avenue academy two months ago from his previous role as the deputy head at Worthing High School and has 18 years' teaching experience.

He has taken over from co-principals Pat Walters and Alan Westerman after strong GCSE results last month and a year after Ofsted gave the academy a

rating of good.

THis term has also seen 90 per cent of the Year 7 intake select the academy as their first choice.

Mr Slaughter said the academy's size, 549 students at the Ofsted inspection, enabled him and his staff to get to know them and their families well.

Being at the academy should also be about more than sitting in classrooms.

"I will also be ensuring that we continue to develop the excellent enrichment opportunities available to students," he said. "Enrichment broadens a student's horizons and expands their experiences outside the classroom."

THe current programme which enabled this to happen would continue. Student support and care was important as well, to ensure they enjoyed their education as well as achieving their potential, he said.

A CAMPAIGNER has criticised the state of Pagham's main road after he conducted a unique study.

Giles Binyon, a member of PAGAM's committee, carried out a 'spot the difference' examination of six sites along Pagham Road.

He wanted to see if repairs which were set to be carried out after his initial visit to the locations in late February had improved the situation.

His latest snapshot of the state of the road on Sunday revealed the repair at one location was still in a good condition.

He could find no evidence of repairs at two of the sites.

THe three others appeared to have been repaired with a loose fill aggregate, which had almost dispersed after six months to leave damage of virtually the same depth as he had seen originally.

Mr Binyon said all the sites were on the roadside verges on a road which he described as 'having excessive usage from all types of vehicular traffic'.

"One does not have to be a road engineer to realise that this kind of damage is indicative of a road that is not only extremely busy but just too narrow to cope with the vehicles using it," he said.

He called on West Sussex County Council's highways department to act to improve the 'degrading, dangerous' condition of Pagham Road.

"THe department must ensure this road is urgently upgraded or, failing that, that no extra traffic load is imposed and immediate steps taken to reduce the numbers and size of vehicles that use it."

Mr Binyon conducted his original 'snapshot' examination as part of the work of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (PAGAM) in fighting plans for allocate three sites for 1,200 homes in Arun District Council's local plan land use blueprint.

His latest visit to the locations, measured by GPS co-ordinates, followed comments by Arun's director of place, Karl Roberts, at a public meeting last May that the highways officers had raised no objections to the proposed housing.

THe sites he visited were on the verges of the road south of Lagness.

THe verges had been undercut by vehicles having to hug them to avoid the many large oncoming vehicles.

A West Sussex County Council spokesmann said: “Repair work was carried out to approximately 300 metres of roadside edging in Pagham Road on April 12.

In the four months since then, it is quite possible that further deterioration has occurred and this will be assessed by our highways officer during the monthly safety inspection, which takes place on or around the 22nd of the month.�

` Level crossing NETWORK RAIL has begun work to make Yapton's level crossing safer.

THe railway organisation started setting up at the North End Road/ Yapton Lane site on Sunday.

THe first major set of construction works will begin on September 23. A second set of works will take place on November 18 ready for the crossing to be in use from next January 12-14 to end the £4m project.

THe scheme will replace the automatic half-barrier crossing to a full-barrier crossing controlled by CCTV. THe crossing is used by 8,000 vehicles and 300 trains a day.

Yapton Parish Council chairman Cllr Stephen Haymes welcomed the improvements. He said: "I am hoping this work will have a good impact on the village.

"At the moment, this is the fastest level crossing in the area and people are using it as a rat run to get to the Ford area. But the barriers will be down for quite a time. I hope that eases the traffic flow both ways."

` Special parkrun A BACK to school version of the Bognor junior parkun is taking place this month.

Organisers of the weekly event would like the four-14-year-olds who join in on September 23 to wear their school PE kit.

THe junior parkrun is a free 2km run at the Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane at 9am on Sundays.

Any youngster within the age range is invited to go along. But they are asked to register first at parkrun.org. uk to obtain a barcode to take along.

Answers are sought over bridge plans RAILWAY bosses have been asked to fully explain their plans to build a new Bognor Regis footbridge.

A group of town councillors has sent a letter to Network Rail seeking more details about its proposals for the Ivy Lane bridge over the railway line to the town.

Two of the council’s Hotham ward members, Cllr Jeanette Warr and Cllr Stephen Reynolds, were among dozens of visitors to a drop-in session held by Network Rail and reported in the Post recently.

Cllr Warr (LD) told Bognor Regis Town Council last week: “THere were about five members of Network Rail there. We were asking them questions that they couldn’t appear to answer in the way we wanted them to.

“A letter has been sent to Network Rail asking the questions we were asking at that meeting so they can be answered because we are not quite sure whether they need to move the whole bridge or perhaps they could use the same footprint (as the existing bridge)?

“THe bridge as it is is dangerous and if they can have the new bridge on the same footprint as it is now that would be positive.

“We await the answers from Network Rail and we will keep you informed.”

Residents of Ivy Lane are angry about

the plans for the new bridge. THey say the slightly changed location of the structure and its raised height, compared to the existing bridge, would ruin their privacy and security.

THey are also annoyed at the fact the scheme is classed as permitted development to mean they are unable to formally object to it.

THe letter sent on behalf of the councillors by the town council's civic and office manager, Jo Davis, sought the answers to two specific questions.

THe first of these stated: 1 - Is it the case that the existing footbridge is to be relocated, with the replacement bridge not accommodating the present footprint of the existing bridge? If so, could you please explain why it is necessary to relocate the footbridge?

2 - Is there no legal requirement to make provision in the design of structures spanning a railway line to provide disabled access?

"Any insight that you can give into these queries would be greatly appreciated."

Ms Davis added that little opportunity had been allowed for objections or representatives about the plans to be made to Arun District Council, which usually decides planning applications.

No answer had been received by councillors before the Post went to print.

Pier group celebrates reaching latest milestone of supporters DELIGHTED members of a Bognor Regis group set up to support the town's pier have reached a four-figure milestone.

Total life membership of Bognor Regis Pier Watch reached 1,002 at the end of last month, to fulfil one of the original goals of its founders.

Jan Malpas, who helped to start the organisation, said she was pleased to have got to the number of life members just 20 months after the first one was signed up.

"We need to continue to build this membership so we can carry on our vision," she said.

THe group's vision is to protect the Grade II listed building for future generations by keeping it as a talking point in the local community.

Mrs Malpas said the membership success came amid a turbulent month for the pier supporters' work.

It started at the Hotham Park Country Fair where pier watch gazebo was among those slashed by vandals.

THe gazebo was next present at the re-arranged Middleton fair on August 19 and was put up again at the Bognor Regis Kite Festival on the bank holiday weekend only to be blown away by the wind, which was so strong it broke the frame.

But undaunted members present met their aim of reaching 1,000 members.

Debate over rink petition

A survey by Arun in 2015 showed an entertainment complex like an ice rink or a bowling alley was supported by 69 per cent of respondents. THose who opposed the idea totalled 18 per cent.

THe council’s adopted proposals for the site are based on a Winter Garden attraction. But the success of a temporary ice rink on the Place St Maur last Christmas – with between 8,000 and 10,000 skaters – led to renewed calls for a permanent rink.

Bognor Regis Civic Society gathered 2,479 signatures in a month from February calling for an ice rink to prompt an hourthe ownerlong debate by Arun on Wednesday night.

Cllr Mrs Gill Brown (C, Aldwick E) said: “THe council has already agreed a scheme based on the Winter Garden concept for the Regis Centre with a replacement theatre, retained car park, hotel, restaurants and some residential to help fund this work.

"THese will all help to enhance our prime seafront site for the benefit of visitors and residents. THe Regis Centre can’t contain all these and a permanent ice rink. THe site simply is not large enough.

“THat’s why our consulants promoted an out of town site because it’s feasible. But it’s not feasible for the prime seafront site.”

Cllr David Edwards (C, Felpham E) said: “An ice rink is a good idea and I am more than happy to support working with commercial operators for a temporary ice rink and helping a commercial operator deliver a permanent facility on the outskirts of town. It’s the right thing to do and the right way to go.”

Cllr Trevor Bence (C, Aldwick E) said: “THe reality is an ice rink would only be used for certain months. Coming after the best summer we have had for years, it seems ironic to talk about getting people in the summer into a seafront ice rink.”

Bench recalls park's friend VISITORS to a Bognor Regis park will be reminded of the work of one of its biggest supporters.

A bench in Hotham Park has been commissioned in memory of Laurie Barnes. Donations for the bench were contributed by Mr Barnes' family, Hotham Park Heritage Trust, Arun District Council and the town's civic society.

Toilets closure anger DISABLED holidaymaker Tom Ospalak is forced to pee in a bottle because of a lack of disabled toilets along Felpham seafront.

Tom, 30, who has cerebral palsy, has to resort to the desperate measure - with the help of his parents Simon and Hazel Ospalak - after the closure of the loos in Culver Road next to the promenade.

Mr Ospalak said the family visited the Bognor Regis area from Hitchin with Tom two or three years a time because of its seafront and the facilities.

But their enjoyment had been spoiled this year after Arun District Council shut the toilets for a major refurbishment. New toilets destined for Bognor Regis seafront have yet to arrive after the previous disabled loo was flattened at the start of this summer.

"THe only toilet now Tom can use is in the theatre in Bognor Regis. THis one in Felpham was a good one to use because we could get his wheelchair around," he said.

"We come to Bognor Regis especially because we know we can use the promenade with its toilets."

Residents are also angry about the lack of toilets.

Mobility scooter user Ruby Knight, 80, of Servite House in Bognor Regis, said: "THere is now only one

disabled toilet for a long way along the seafront.

"I've just seen two coaches pull up on the seafront and most of the passengers who got out were in wheelchairs. I got into the disabled toilet before them and there was a quite a queue when I left.

"But it's not just disabled people, because a child of five can also want to go to the toilet. Everybody is affected by this."

Another mobility scooter user, Edna Broadbridge, 80, of Felpham, said: "It's disgraceful the toilets have closed. I come here every day.

"I live on my own and going along the seafront is part of my life. I have my social life meeting people here and I know I have the toilets here as well. THat's not the case now."

THe toilets are being refurbished into unisex cubicles and should be re-opened in late October.

Paul Broggi, Arun's property, estates and facilities manager, has told one of the protesters: "THe contract periods for delivery of the proposed refurbishments are short and so the period of unavoidable disruption is limited and has been kept to out of peak season, again to further assist in minimising disruption."

As reported, Mr Barnes passed away aged 76 in March, 2017, from prostate cancer. He helped to found Hotham Park Heritage Trust as well as Bognor Regis Civic Society, of which he was its only chairman.

One of his friends, Martin Lury, said: "To be fair to Arun, it's a beautiful oak bench.

I'm really impressed by it."

A RETRO video gaming event is taking place to raise cash for a cancer charity.

Pixels Against Cancer will take place on Sunday, from 2pm until 8pm, at THe Waverley pub in Aldwick.

THe event will raise money for Cancer Research UK and is being organised by Zoe Pniewski following the death of her uncle and godfather last Christmas.

Zoe said: "My uncle died of pancreatic cancer within four weeks of being diagnosed.

"I wanted to do something to raise money and awareness for all those who live with or have suffered with cancer or someone they know who has had this disease."

Zoe's husband, Jan, has a garage full of retro video games which will now be put to good use.

THere will be a variety of hardware and software available on the day.

It will include a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Atari 2600, Commodore Amiga, Sony PlayStation 1, Sega Mega drive, Binatone Pong and several Raspberry Pis running emulations of classic arcade games.

THe event will have Scan Station, a computer company based in Bognor Regis, which will be bringing a selection of up to date gaming systems available to try.

Entrance to the event is free, but there will be gameplay by donation.

Former head passes away A DEVOTED headteacher who led a Bognor Regis school for 13 years has passed away.

Paul Kilcoyne was in charge of hundreds of pupils' education when he ran St Mary's Catholic Primary School from 1983 to 1996.

He died on September 3, aged 73, and his funeral will take place next Friday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in the town.

Mr Kilcoyne moved to Bognor Regis from his previous role as a headteacher in Lancashire.

He and his wife, Pamela, initially visited Bognor Regis in 1971 when they came on holiday to Goodwood Races. THey loved the area and he was keen to apply when the vacancy arose at St Mary's.

Mrs Kilcoyne said: "He had many happy years at St Mary's. As a headteacher, he was a traditionalist, focusing on student attainment by improving teaching and learning.

"In particular, he was keen to improve

standards in English and mathematices by engaging students.

"One of his initiatives to improve mathematics was starting a mastermind quiz to learn times tables. It was also important to him to know all the children and so he read stories to the infants in the reception class every Friday afternoon."

Mr Kilcoyne also enthusiastically took on the new financial obligations expected of headteachers during his time in charge of the Glamis Street school.

He had been a teacher since the age of 21. After he left the school, he set up an educational consultancy and was involved in revision programmes for pupils as well as being an Ofsted inspector.

He went on to work part-time for one of his daughters, promoting software for interactive whiteboards.

Mr Kilcoyne is survived by his wife, their two daughters and four grandchildren.

New building sought by RollsRoyce Motor Cars at its site ROLLS-ROYCE Motor Cars wants to construct a new building at its Bognor Regis site.

THe luxury car manufacturer has applied for planning permission for the temporary logistics building and ancillary works, including service area, at the site if its technology and logistics centre in Newlands Road.

THe company intends to use the temporary building, if it is approved, until the end of 2023.

A statement by Charlie Brown, RollsRoyce Motor Cars' planning agent, says: "THe proposed development will make more productive and

formalised use of an underused area of hardstanding on the existing site.

"THe proposed development is also in accordance with local planning policy, being employment development on a strategic employment site."

THe centre was constructed in 2014 and 2015 and consists of two units which opened in early 2016.

THe area which is the subject of the planning application is next to Unit One. THe site provides significant storage capacity for stock and parts to make what Mr Brown describes as a 'critical contribution' to the RollsRoyce Motor Cars' base in Goodwood.

Singer Olivia Stevens will be hanging up lyrical creations of 'word birds from Blake' from trees around the town.

THe public meeting will examine the relevance of William Blake's most famous work to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Britain's potential role in finding a solution to it.

How frightening to be a parent in the days of technology

AS I’ve mentioned previously, I’m very fortunate to be a parent to 2 girls. When I became a parent I had no idea the perils I’d face in the modern world of technology. I like to think of myself as computer savvy, hell I can type a letter, send an email, search the internet and order my shopping on line. However, although on Facebook, I’m not on Twitter or Musicality or Instagram, but it is a prerequisite of youth to be on all social media.

I see young girls pass my office taking selfies, obviously to upload to Instagram or Facebook or some other social media site later. I find my daughter’s lives are lived out on the internet. THeir friends lives are lived out on the internet and everyone want to be a YouTube star.

What happened to wanting to be a nurse or teacher? Am I the only one scared as a parent on who my children are connecting with. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super vigilant, like a Ninja

on checking the social media of my children, but you seriously need eyes in the back of your head. THey’ve had followers from all around the globe that I’ve had to block as we don’t know them.

How can one child know 500 people internationally? Also, how do we know these people are who they say they are? Speaking to friends, they too face the same perils, it makes me wonder, have things actually improved for our children.

I remember dating in my youth and a guy would phone my home number and my mum would answer. I would sit in the hall, (we only had the one phone), so the only reason he called was to make a date. Now kids are dating off the internet, chatting on whatsapp, never having met each other. Have things really improved for our kids or are we just now living in an alternative reality where you can be whoever you want to be without leaving your home?

Kim steps to it for diabetes

` Man in court A MAN stopped and searched in Bognor Regis by police has been charged with ten offences.

Officers followed a car into Sylvan Way on September 3 after being told the vehicle had been stolen.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "A man who had parked the car and walked off was stopped by officers and arrested on suspicion of a theft of a car."

A search of the vehicle revealed items alleged to have been stolen from a number of properties.

Barry Shaw, 40, of no fixed address, was charged with taking a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, robbery, a burglary dwelling with intent to steal, three counts of a burglary dwelling and theft and four counts of fraud by false representation between August 28 and September 3 in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas.

He was remanded in custody and will appear for trial at Portsmouth Crown Court on October 3.

A 43-year-old man, of no fixed address, was also arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and a burglary dwelling with intent to steal and released on bail until October 1.

Business awards seek special firms REALLY special companies are being sought to scoop the honours at this year's 21st anniversary Arun Business of the Year Awards.

THe awards have gone from strength to strength and received their highest number of nominations last year to show the number of quality businesses which operate in the area.

THe annual showcase of successful enterprises is organised by the Arun Business Partnership, supported by Arun District Council.

A spokesman for the partnership said: "THere are 17 categories in all and each individual award is sponsored by a local business.

"Companies nominated in each category are automatically entered into the Business of the Year, sponsored by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

"An awards ceremony will be held at

THe partnership works for the interests of businesses across the district. Its meetings regularly attract representatives from more than 70 enterprises in the area.

A FORMER nurse from Yapton took the train to begin a 1 Million Step Challenge for a charity.

Kim Short has to complete at least 10,000 steps a day to reach her target in aid of Diabetes UK. A former Sussex community cervice nurse, Kim wants to raise awareness of diabetes and its severe complications.

She said: "My inspiration was simple really. I've always loved walking and it's a great way to get fit and stay in shape.

"I get a lot of pleasure from enjoying the scenery around me too. I started my one million step challenge on a recent trip to Canada - my husband and I took a wonderful train ride along the Rockies.

"THe train had 25 cars and measured a quarter of a mile. I'd walk the length of the train every morning to get in a few steps."

THere are estimated 3.7 million people in the UK diagnosed with diabetes and ten per cent of those have the type 1 variety. If not managed well, both type 1 and type 2 can lead to devastating complications such as blindness and leg amputations.

"In my time as a nurse, some of the patients I treated were living with diabetes," said Kim. "Diabetes diagnosis is, unfortunately, on the rise, more than doubling in the past 20 years. THe rise in childhood type 2 diabetes due to diet and lifestyle is also worrying."

Stepping back in time with steam, speed and style at the 20th Revival

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TRAVELLING back in time to vintage years, visitors to this year's Goodwood Revival were treated to some spectacular sights.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the popular car event and 70 years since the formation of British Railways, those attending got up close and personal to a steam train parked up near the track.

THe Loco 9017 complete with steam was showcased on a track with actors dressed in vintage outfits consisting of passengers and staff. THere was even a miniature version taking passengers on a mini track alongside it.

It is a Dukedog loco – a nickname earned due to being an amalgamation of a Bulldog chassis and a Duke boiler.

THe frames of the loco came from a 1906 Bulldog, and the boiler and cab of Chepstow Castle, a Duke class loco built in 1899. THe engine was rebuilt as a Dukedog in 1938.

THe engine weighs 49 tons, with a tender of 40 tons – 56ft 1.5in overall in length, a water capacity of 3,500 gallons and a coal capacity of six tons.

Also celebrating 100 years of the RAF, this year's Freddie March Spirit of Aviation section showcased some iconic British planes, including a Lysander, Hurricane and Spitfires.

THere were also several air shows featuring three Spitfires and a Hurricane

with barrel rolls and loop-the-loops.

VIPs, motor-racing personalities and members of the press flocked to Goodwood’s race control building for the Credit Suisse Historic Racing Forum on Saturday morning.

A distinguished panel met to discuss ‘THe Challenge of Le Mans’ where Derek Bell, five times a winner of the famous 24 Hours, talked about the subject with Alain de Cadenet, Gordon Murray and 1989 victor Jochen Mass.

Broadcaster Bruce Jones hosted the event, and topics covered included the different approaches taken by different teams – with Derek Bell recalling that on his debut for Ferrari in 1970 he was told simply to “get in and drive”.

His later races for Porsche were much more disciplined, and he described the German team as being the greatest he ever drove for.

Gordon Murray also shared his memories of adapting his McLaren F1 road car into the GTR racer, which sensationally won at Le Mans on its debut in 1995.

THroughout the F1’s development, he had been adamant that it was not going to go racing – but eventually he relented, and the GTR wrote itself into the history books.

THe Earls Court Motor Show was transformed into scenes from some of legendary actor, Steve McQueen’s most memorable appearances on the big screen.

Representative vehicles from THe

Great Escape, Bullitt and Le Mans were on display, arguably the most famous movie car chase in history was recreated as a Ford Mustang GT390 and Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum return sideby-side as they did in 1968’s Bullitt.

Turning the clock back to 1943, a BMW R75 bike with sidecar and a Ford V3000 S Truck sat with the very Triumph TR6 Trophy bike that Steve McQueen used to try to escape from the German Army in THe Great Escape. THe Triumph was actually dressed as a BMW for the film.

Finally, a Jaguar XKSS, an Austin Mini Cooper S Mk2, a Porsche 356 Speedster and an Indian Chief motorcycle represented Steve McQueen’s own personal collection.

THe Revival's 'Over THe Road' section had plenty of market stalls to browse, along with a vintage funfair, Butlin's Roller Rink, the Wall of Death and the iconic Bonham's auction.

Phil Keen brought the curtain down on the 2018 Goodwood Revival Meeting with a brilliant drive to win from the pitlane for the Sussex Trophy cup.

THe British GT charger had qualified Jon Minshaw’s ListerJaguar on pole, only to have problems on the grid. THe car was pushed into the pitlane, Keen being obliged to watch the entire field flash past before he could embark on the mother of all comeback drives.

` Town regeneration REGENERATION proposers have been asked to contact Bognor Regis Town Council.

It has set up a working group to examine the town's future and would like to hear from those who put forward ideas to Arun District Council's consultation in 2015.

A town council spokesman said: "During recent meetings, the town council has voiced its concerns that the consultation carried out in 2015

by Arun on regeneration within Bognor Regis was not adequate and, therefore, members are looking to address this.

"While the decision-making process on any final regeneration plans lies solely with Arun, the town council feels it has a duty to listen to local residents and feed back comments in an effort to influence future designs and decisions."

THe town council has sought to contact as many of those who contributed as possible and it would like to hear from those whose details it has been unable to obtain.

` Station planting HOPES are high new planting will be carried out on the Bognor Regis railway station forecourt.

Town councillor Jeanette Warr met Arun District Council officers and members last week and said she was hopeful the current planting would be replaced. She said: "I am very happy about this, At last, Arun have listened to what we have been saying about the planting."

Suspects sought TWO SUSPECTS are being sought in connection with the attempted theft of a bicycle in Felpham.

Sussex Police would like to identify the man and woman, pictured below, who could be seen on CCTV at the scene in Waterloo Road.

A police spokesman said: "CCTV captured the suspects, firstly a man came and looked at the bike at around 11am on Saturday, August 11, chained up outside

the victim's home in Waterloo Road.

"THe woman then came around 5am and attempted to take the bike but left empty-handed. THe pair are believed to be working together."

Plaque is unveiled A MEMORIAL plaque to a former councillor has been unveiled on the only viaduct in the Bognor Regis area.

THe tribute to Dr Alan Stainton has seen the structure on the Bognor Regis relief road named after him. A ceremony to mark its unveiling took place last THursday.

Among those present were his wife, Elaine Stainton, family members and friends as well as Arun district councillors and the council's chief executive, Nigel Lynn.

Cllr Mrs Gillian Brown, the district council's leader, said: "It was a great privilege to be at the unveiling of the Bognor Regis relief road viaduct plaque as a tribue to Alan.

"He was both a friend and a wellrespected councillor colleague of mine.

THe unveiling came nearly ten years after Dr Stainton's death in December, 2008, aged 61 from a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

He had been a Conservative district councillor for Felpham West for 13-anda-half years. He was first elected in May, 1995. He was also a parish and county councillor the area and was dedicated to village matters by speaking up to support residents and challenge decisions.

His later roles included vice-chairman of Arun's policy development scrutiny committee after he had chaired three of its most important committees.

Away from the council, he had a varied and honorable career in aviation engineering. He was just one of three civilians to be awarded the Gulf War Medal by the British government.

Make sure you read the seed pack to find out how much seed to sow for the size of your pot and, as wild flower seeds can be on the small side, mix them with a bit of sand as it makes distributing them easier. Once scattered water gently and keep the soil damp until the seeds have germinated. Place in an open sunny

spot and turn the container occasionally, especially if placed against a wall, to avoid lopsidedness. Don’t overwater.

If you grow wild flowers until they go to seed then you can save the seeds for the following year. Planting seeds in the autumn, a couple of months before frost starts, is a great way of ensuring early spring growth, or you can sow seeds directly into containers in the spring when the weather is frost free.

Grant troops around town

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ANOTHER being has invaded Bognor Regis and Chichester city centres from the Dark Side.

Residents and visitors have been seen posing with a Stormtrooper around the Post areas for a few weeks.

THe robot soldier has been parading around greeting people with high fives, hugs and friendly waves.

Real name, Grant Warren Gibson, aged 23, from Bognor Regis, is enjoying his anonymous rock-star fame and says he does it simply to make people smile.

Working full-time job as a carer, Grant uses his time off to cheer people up.

He said: "I've been a Stormtrooper walking around for about five months now. I go round Bognor Regis, Pagham, Chichester and Fareham and just wave at people.

"I try really hard not to talk to children who come up to me because they see me as a robot and don't care for the people inside the costumes. When I was little I saw a stormtrooper take his helmet off and I remember being really upset so I try and stay anonymous."

Grant got his suit - it is made from fibreglass and cost around £700 - in Great Yarmouth and he put it together himself. He even got a blaster rifle 3D printed.

Grant is known among his fellow Stormtroopers as Goldie because of the gold lenses in his helmet and his badge number 160695 - 1606 is his rank number and 95 because of his birth year.

"I always wanted a Stormtrooper outfit since I was a child," said Grant. "I won't accept any money from anybody, it's all for free. If anybody insists, I donate it to charity."

A 'POTENTIALLY live' Second World War bomb was detonated in Pagham last Saturday.

Littlehampton Coastguard was called to reports of ordnance at the beach. Photos were sent to the experts, who confirmed 'it could potentially be a live fused projectile'. A 100m cordon was put in place and the Selsey coastguard team was called for back up.

THe explosive ordnance disposal team arrived from Portsmouth and decided the best action was to dispose of the item at the site by detonating it.

Another item thought to be a risk was found to be safe.

Darren Crisp, from Littlehampton Coastguard, said: Ordnance doesn't always look like something you would expect to be dangerous.

"If you are unsure of something you see on the beach, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

THIS Sunday sees the last summer opening of the year for miniature train rides at Chichester Model Engineers.

THe main attraction of the day from 1pm to 5pm will be the debut of the club members' homemade 5in gauge model steam locomotive in pulling passenger trains at the Blackberry Lane site.

Other club members will be commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Colonel HF Stephens, who built and ran the Selsey Tram Railway from 1897 to 1935, with a model layout.

Centre's new classes to help beat cancer EXERCISE classes for people with cancer are among the new innovations at a Bognor Regis centre.

THe five CU Fitter sessions have begun to prove popular at the Laburnum Centre since they were started a few weeks ago.

THey were in the packed programme highlighted to visitors at the centre's latest open day last week.

Centre manager Sarah Smith said the classes had some 15 members in all each week. Numbers continued to grow in the joint venture with the Angmering-based charity, Cancer United.

Sarah said: "It has been discovered that the best way to defeat cancer is to exercise and people who are diagnosed can feel isolated and different. THey can come to these sessions, get fitter and find they are in the same boat as everyone there."

THe centre for the over-50s in Lyon Street has more of the sessions than other Age UK centres in the area.

"One in three people get cancer and our members can join the sessions and people who are not members can also come in and take part," said Sarah.

THe open day was the latest to be held at the centre to promote the new activities among its scores of established classes and boost its rising membership of 1,057.

New activities include a walking group, table tennis and Tai Chi. Sarah also praised the more than 100 volunteers at the centre who played a large part in its five days a week running,

On the open day, pilates, digital photography, model-making and fitness were taking place along with members working out in the gym.

Among those hoping to see newcomers were two members of the crafts group - Pip Jones and Ruth Seabrook Hope, pictured near right - to boost its number from 17 back to its peak around 35.

Felpham resident Pip, 88, said: "It's a case of being part of a community.

You feel you are doing something worthwhile.

"We do knitting, sewing and quilting.

It's not all about sewing. We are hoping people will come along and start to talk to us whether they can do sewing, knitting or anything at all."

Ruth, 82, of Pagham, said: "We are all over 80. People seem to think they are over the hill when they reach 80 - but that's when we get started."

Also seeking new members is the leader of the model-making session.

Dave Seddon, 68, of Bognor Regis, has just one regular other member each week. THe pair of them create homemade models such as dolls houses and bungalows and toy karts.

Some are put into the centre's raffles to help it and others are sold.

"I came here three years ago after I retired. THe man who used to run it died and I wanted to keep it going.

"It gets me out of the house to do something creative and the social aspect is good as well," he said.

Busy during on the day were the

centre's meeters and greeters. THey included Jenny Coombs, 70, of Aldwick.

She said: "I've been a member for 18 months. I just love the company here and the friends I've made, keeping fit here and being healthier. I moved down here not knowing anyone. Now, I've got lots of friends."

One of the newcomers was 76-year-old Aldwick resident Pat Lippett, who said: "I need to socialise more because I am on my own. I've heard this centre is very good and I'm looking forward to taking part in the yoga, movement and dance sessions."

Also at the centre for the first time were Felpham friends Ann Hulston, 71, Lynda Richardson, 70, and Reita Brown, 78.

Ann said: "I'm looking forward to the social aspect the most. We know a friend who comes here and another who helps here. We thought we would come and have a look.

"I've been very impressed so far with all that's going on. It's more than I thought."

Motorists enjoy time travel NEARLY £4,000 has been raised by Bognor Regis Motor Club on its latest historic car tour.

THe club's eighth tour and picnic saw a packed field of 80 cars, all registered before 1985, take to the roads for a leisurely and enjoyable drive for a good cause.

THis year's event raised well over £3,875 for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance on top of the some £27,000 raised for charitable causes in the previous years of the event.

Ali Green, the club's press officer, said: "THere was a veritable feast for the motoring enthusiast.

THere was another full entry with an amazing array of vehicles from a 1926 Frazer Nash Fast Tourer and a 1927 Alvis 12/50 SD to 12 Austin Healeys, a very rare 1956 Daimler Drophead Coupe and a Dart SP250.

"Variants of Triumphs, MGs and Minis were also entered. Many other British and

European marques were present as well, plus a Ford Model A and Mustang and some different eras of Cobra."

Like the previous tours, the start was hosted

by Great Ballard School at Eartham. THe 104mile route headed north through picturesque countryside, bathed in hot sunshine, to lunch at Farnborough Air Sciences Trust.

THis was followed by a drive for a private cream tea and visit at the rarely opened heathland garden at Champs Hill in Coldwaltham. THe tour's last leg took the drivers to Old Ditcham Park Farm for a hog roast and cash bar.

Live music from the Chichester-based Tom Belbin Trio provided an enjoyable end to an event recognised in the prestigious Historic Rally Car Register's scenic tour calendar.

THe latest tour took the club's charitable fundraising to more than £600,000 in the past 21 years.

` Property law change LANDLORDS of properties across Bognor Regis and Chichester have been warned to comply with a law change.

From October 1, the legislation for houses of multiple occupancy will remove the current 'storey height' criteria.

THis will mean all of the privately rented properties are occupied by five or more people who form at least two households - and who share basic amenities - will require a licence.

Landlords who lack a current licence must submit a valid application for one before the end of this month. It is an offence to operate such a property without a licence or fail to comply with any of its conditions.

THe government has also introduced minimum sleeping room sizes and waste disposal requirements, which will be included as licence conditions for new licences. Existing HMO licences will remain valid until they expire.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun District Council's cabinet member for technical services, said: "THe council is committed to ensuring standards within the private rented sector are improved."

THe Rewind campaign contains a series of statements which set out the rights the police officer and the individual involved both have in the situation.

Assistant chief constable Steve Barry said everyone had the same right to be treated fairly and with respect. THe power was used to keep people safe.

RAF cadets' new banner blessed A NEW banner has been presented to the Bognor Regis cadets' squadron.

THe standard was donated to 2351 (Bognor Regis) Squadron RAF Air Cadets by a family in the town.

A spokesman said: "THe donation was in recognition of the squadron's achievements in encouraging an interest in aviation, in developing good citizenship in generations of young people and for the way it has represented the parent service since the closure of RAF Tangmere in 1970."

THe gift also marked the centenary of the RAF. THe blessing was performed at the squadron's base in Chichester Road in North Bersted by the Rev Canon

David Nason, the chaplain to the London and South East Region of the RAF Air Cadets.

After the ceremony, Cadet Emily Sherrington received the banner from him. Her escorts were twin brothers, Coporals Samuel and Jacob Towler.

THe old banner will be laid up, in line with the traditional custom, as a mark of respect to those who have given service behind it.

THis will take place at the Bognor Regis Battle of Britain service at 10.30am this Sunday at the town's Methodist Church in Waterloo Square.

THe annual event is organised by the local RAF Association branch.

RESIDENTS in the Post area who are living with an incurable illness will have the support of West Sussex County Council.

Its cabinet member for adults and health, Cllr Amanda Jupp, has signed the five-point charter of the Motor Neurone Disease Association to show its commitment to help people with the condition and their carers.

THe charter outlines the respect, care and support that people living with motor neurone disease (MDA) and their carers should expect.

Cllr Jupp said: "It is vital we raise awareness of MND so people understand what a devastating disease it is.

"THe county council signed up to the charter as it is committed to ensuring that people living with disabilities - of any kind - and those who are caring for them, should be treated with respect and provided with timely information, preventive services, and access to care and support when and where they require it."

MND is an incurable, rapidly developing disease which affects a

person's brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves which control movement to prevent muscles from working.

Up to 5,000 adults in the UK are affected at any time and six people are killed by the condition each day.

Steve Dyer, president of the West Sussex North branch of the association, said: "Motor neurone disease is a fatal condition seizing independence from even the strongest of individuals.

"Health and social care crucially need to be highly competent, accessible and co-ordinated."

Brick Kiln Garden Centre hits right note with popular music events MUSIC-LOVERS tapped their feet and had a bloomin' good time thanks to a superb jazz in the cafe event at Brick Kiln Garden Centre.

Often referred to as the virtuoso of the trumpet and known for his many appearances at Jazz festivals, Andy Woon and his band played memorable hits from yesteryear at the free event at the Brick Kiln Garden Centre. Delighted customers enjoyed lunch as they soaked up a feel-good atmosphere.

And if that wasn't enough, Brick Kiln congratulated their customers for raising more than £2,000, which was donated to Service Dogs UK, with the money raised being collected at the event by the charity's grateful co-founder Garry Botterill.

Service Dogs UK trains and provides assistance dogs to support members of the military who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). THey mainly use rescue dogs to achieve unique partnerships that enhance the lives of both.

Garry based in Chichester, said: "We can't thank the kind customers at Brick Kiln Garden Centre enough for a brilliant effort. Dogs can make all the difference that’s why Service Dogs UK trains and provides PTSD assistance dogs, to support members of the Armed Forces and emergency services who have PTSD.” As for the music, the garden centre stages live events at lunchtime twice a month with Jazz every second Tuesday of the month and Folk every last Tuesday of the month. As well as Andy Woon, the band was made up of renowned Jazz musicians; Nils Solberg on guitar, Steve THompson on bass, and Bobby Worth, on drums.

Bobby, who runs Jazz at the Village in Felpham, said: "Brick Kiln Garden Centre always has a wonderful enthusiastic and

appreciative audience, it’s a great venue in which to perform. We play here once a month and really enjoy it. THe other events they stage here are very popular as well."

Lorrayne Mendes, Brick Kiln’s event organiser, said: “Our Jazz events are hugely popular with our customers and it’s always advisable to call to book a table. We have national and international leading musicians performing here in the café and we have built a reputation as a regular Jazz and Folk venue. We invite everyone to come along and enjoy the Free music events.’’

Tea Dances are also very popular at Brick Kiln Garden Centre. Every second and last THursday of each month customers flock in to enjoy themselves on the dancefloor. THe Tea Dance event is from 2.30-4.30 with a short break in the middle for everyone to indulge in a delicious tea and cake. So, why not get yourself down to Brick Kiln with your dancing shoes and enjoy the afternoon?

Make yourself happy with more confidence CONFIDENCE is a strange thing. How do you define it? Some people appear very confident, talk with calm conviction, look amazing and seem to not have a care in the world. But this is not always the case…sometimes the most seemingly confident people in the world have a bunch of insecurities that in solid format, could fill Buckingham Palace.

THe truth is, you never really know what’s going on inside someone’s head. Anything can give your self-esteem a knock, but over time life can take its toll and before you know it you are unrecognisable. I see people in my clinic every day that due to one reason or another feel they are a completely different person to they were ten or 20 years ago.

Some mistake this for depression even, but sometimes, I think just feeling in control and regaining your power can be enough to give you that boost in life that you need to feel the fire in your belly again for living the life you want. Or give you the courage to make decisions that will benefit you enormously.

In short, you cannot rely on anyone else to make you happy. Being around certain people can spark feelings of happiness, but your real happiness is within. When you are alone, with your own thoughts, are you genuinely happy with where you are in your life? Or with your partner, husband, friends, job, hobbies etc.

THe list is endless and, of course, very personal to you. What is good for one person may not be good for another. Illness, for one, can really take you down emotionally, especially if you are in hospital for a while or bed bound for a length of time and cannot be

socially active if that’s what you love. But there is an array of other reasons too, why you may feel the need to regain your power!

Whatever your reasons are, if you feel you are not quite yourself, and would like to learn more about gaining strength and confidence, through the mind and great nutrition, my colleague,, Jemima Eames and I are doing a day’s workshop on Saturday, September 29, at the Hilton Avisford Park hotel in Arundel, from 10am until 4pm.

SUPERLATIVES are generally good indicators of quality, so off I duly sped to my nearest Tesco store primarily to evaluate some of their finest* collection wines.

Two white wines at most competitive offer prices caught my attention, beginning with a 2016 Tesco finest* Soave Superiore Classico on sale for just £5.60.

THe Classico on the label is indicative of the grapes coming from the best hillside area and floral aromas complement the stone fruit and ripe citrus flavours of this fine example.

THis wine has a perfect balance of fruit and acidity and fermentation in oak barrels explains its extra dimension of

richness on the mid - palate and is one well worth purchasing.

THe second white wine, a Tesco finest* 2018 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, for an outlay of just £6, proved to be a passion fruit extravaganza with concentrated fruit and a steal at this price for such a quaffable number!

Time for a rosé, I told myself, and I was able to procure a Tesco finest* Côtes De Provence of 2017 vintage for the sum of £6.40.

Pale pink in colour, this rosé from the sunny Mediterranean coast in the South East of France is thirst-quenchingly crisp and dry with abundant stone fruit flavours with notes of strawberries and redcurrants and would be an ideal pair to garlic prawns!

In terms of red wines, I first espied a 2017 Tesco finest* Argentinian Malbec on offer for just £6 and made by the famous Catena family from the foothills of the Andes and noted the blackberry and plum flavours with notes of blueberry - a lot of bang for your buck and a good allrounder.

For £1 extra, the 2017 Tesco finest* Saint -Chinian, a wine from the Languedoc -Roussillon region of Southern France

made from syrah and grenache grapes, turned out to be robust, brambly and a blend of dark luscious fruit with blackcurrant and hedgerow fruits and a hint of spice - a good pair to roast lamb.

Finally, for an outlay of £9, the Tesco

finest* 2016 Lussac Saint-Émilion from the right bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde estuary proved to be full-bodied with blackcurrant, cedar wood and

Community News & Views EVERYONE is invited to celebrate the fifth birthday of a Bognor Regis charity shop.

THe outlet of the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice will be holding a party to mark the occasion with a party from 2pm3.30pm next Tuesday.

Cllr Stephen Reynolds, the town mayor of Bognor Regis, will be attending to join in with staff, volunteers, customers and donors.

Town crier, Jane Smith, will be proclaiming the good news from outside the shop in the London Road precinct.

A beach party theme has been adopted to make the most of the reputation of Bognor Regis as mainland Britain's sunshine capital.

A seaside 'head in the hole' photo frame, photo booth, popcorn, candy floss and sticks of rock will add to the frivolity. Free refreshments and a themed birthday cake will be among the trimmings.

Jan Harper, the hospice's head of retail, said: "We would like to thank all our customers and donors over the last five years for their generous support.

"In the past year, the Bognor shop team processed and sold over 40,000 items that were generously donated by local people - a fantastic achievement.

"It costs £6,850 to provide for one day of care services at Chestnut Tree House. Last year, this shop alone raised enough to fund seven full days of care at the hospice, where the children receive specialist support and symptom management from our nursing team, while enjoying the fantastic facilities which the hospice offers."

THe hospice, sited near Arundel, celebrates its 15th birthday this year. Its chain of charity shops have raised more than £9m in that time.

WORK is going on by West Sussex County Council to support military veterans returning to civilian life.

THe council has been holding workshops for staff to learn how to support colleagues who have been in the armed forces.

As part of its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, the council runs a guaranteed interview scheme to help those who have served in the military find a job afterwards. Four reservists recently applied for roles through the scheme.

Fraser Pake is among those who were in the military and now work at the council. He is its corporate risk and business planning manager.

He said: "I had three months left on my military contract and I saw a role that I felt was perfect at the county council.

But I was concerned that I might not be given an opportunity to get to the interview stage.

"Once I was sure I met the criteria for the role, as a service leaver I had the option to request a guaranteed interview, which I did."

THe covenant aims to help to reduce the risk of veterans developing health and welfare problems as a result of longterm unemployment. But it does not necessarily mean a job offer will be made.

Further training courses for staff are planned for next month and will provide more in-depth training for employees who wish to become military champions.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the council's cabinet member for stronger, safer communities, said: "We owe an enormous debt to our veterans and it is absolutely vital that we make the transition to civilian life as easy as possible.

"THat is why it is brilliant to see the success of the recent workshops here and to hear what a big difference the guaranteed interview scheme makes."

A £5,000 donation was presented last week to charity, Love Your Hospital.

THe Lodge of the Union 38, Chichester Free Masons added to the growing fun and the hospital have now reached nearly £20,000.

Consultant urological surgeon Paul Carter said: "We are extremely grateful to THe Lodge of the Union 38.

"THey are big supporters of our fundraising efforts and again have donated generously.

"Everyone who sponsors the team will be making a real difference to patients needing urological health care in our local area.”

Consultant urological surgeons from St Richard’s Hospital, Worthing Hospital and West Sussex Urology LLP are vowing to take on a gruelling 100-mile bike ride in a bid to raise £80,000 to provide new equipment to improve diagnosis of urological cancers and other specialist urological conditions such as blood in the urine or patients at risk of prostate cancer.

Gary Sharp, secretary to the Lodge of the Union, added: “THe Lodge of Union, based in Chichester, has helped to fund a number of the Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation Trust projects during the past two years and is proud, once again, to support the trust and, in particular, this appeal that has a relevance to the members of our organisation.

We are supporting the fight against prostate cancer.”

A SCHEME designed to help young women who struggle to afford sanitary products has arrived at Chichester College.

THe college has become the first organisation in the area to sign up to the Red Box Project. It will be home to donation and collection boxes, with anyone able to donate sanitary products while students will be able to discreetly take what they need.

Shelagh Legrave, Chichester College Group's chief executive, and Chichester College executive principal Andrew Green have shown their support by donating products.

Ms Legrave said: "THis is a great example of how we are working with our local community to help tackle important social issues.

"THe issue of period poverty is a serious one and it can have a major impact on many young women. THis is a step towards addressing this issue and supporting any of our students who may be affected."

Mr Green said: "THis is a fantastic project and we are pleased to be able to support it, by both hosting a donation box for people to donate to and having red boxes with products for our students to be able to access.

"If people would like to donate to the Red Box project, they can do so simply be popping into the main reception at the college."

THe Red Box Project aims to alleviate any anxiety, embarrassment and stress caused by a lack of sanitary protection.

Any students who require items will be able to access them via the college's welfare office and student union, where they can simply take what they need - with no questions asked.

Lynsey Hutcheson is spearheading the project in Chichester and hopes many others organisations will follow the college and get involved.

"It just takes one person to make a donation to make a difference to a young woman's life," she said. THe scheme was about all those who lacked access to sanitary products for any reason - not just period poverty.

A LANDOWNERS' group has welcomed the government's pilot scheme for non-EU seasonal agricultural workers.

THe CLA - which represents about 5,000 members across the south east - says the latest announcement by ministers was a good idea but tackled only part of the situation.

Government ministers say the initiative between spring 2019 and December, 2020, will help to tackle labour shortages during peak production periods. Visas for up to 2,500 workers a year will last for six months.

CLA president Tim Breitmeyer said: "THe announcement of a government pilot enabling farmers to recruit non-EU migrants as seasonal workers between spring 2019 and the end of 2020 is welcome.

"I'm pleased government is listening to the message from the CLA and others that urgent provision needs to be made.

Present road belies its busy business past West Street is the forgotten historic trading heart of the town WEEKLY discussions occur regarding the centre of the town and roads like the High Street, Station Road and London Road.

However, how many people realise that there was, in fact, another main shopping centre in the 1840s? Today, the street in question is sadly neglected both by shoppers, and those involved in the talks.

THe area in question is West Street, which was once the bustling and thriving centre of our town. It is a street where many of the ‘names’ of today such as Reynolds and Jennings became established before they moved into our current shopping centre.

Sadly, it has declined in importance so that most people drive through that area without even a cursory glance at what remains of the shops, and certainly without any idea or consideration to the shopkeepers who have traded and closed in this area.

West Street has seen numerous changes over its life. However, many of the early buildings still exist today. THerefore, I thought we could take a stroll through the street, starting at the seaward end with the Royal Norfolk Hotel, which has looked over the street since it was built in the 1830s. Of course, then it overlooked almost a country lane into the newly developing town with its streets and houses.

Shops and tradesmen slowly opened, many of which were indicative of the times.

However, it has always remained a mix of private houses and shops.

For instance, just opposite the Royal Norfolk was Lansdowne Mews. THis was the site where horses, which were used to take the carriages out to Westergate to collect passengers from the trains, were stabled. THis property has been converted and is today seen simply as a private residence.

Butchers’ shops have established their own place in the history of this street. Field’s, long since gone, was one of the earliest traders, which was established in 1804. Five generations of the family ran the shop, but like many other businesses either time or legislation forced them to cease trading. THis building is now another private residence, but happily still displaying the 'Field' sign on the front of the premises in tiles.

Hidden away above Sisterly Care Ltd is a blue plaque, depicting the fact it was the birthplace, in 1832, of Joseph Witham, who as a marine artist, is shown at the National Maritime Museum.

For many years, there was a well-used post office that finally closed on November 24, 1984, despite protests from the public.

Street since 1895, but during one of the eras of centralisation it was deemed necessary to close this branch. THe post box is still there.

Carlo Lai was another familiar name that has been an occupant of the street for many years. He was in West Street in 1980 and maybe before that time. THe property is now Kysmi. Milton House is now a private residence, rather than a fishing tackle shop.

West Street was not without its public houses. THere have been two pubs. Namely, the Berkeley Arms, which is still there today though not on its original site, which was further along the road, and which it occupied from 1839 to 1933.

THe other licensed premises were THe Wheatsheaf from 1832 until it was demolished, and the licence was transferred to its new premises in Hawthorn Road in the 1930s. THe Berkeley Arms then moved to the site previously occupied by THe Wheatsheaf.

THe Berkeley Arms eventually closed and became the town museum. Sadly, without beer, but a wealth of information on our town's history. So why not drink in our town’s history for a change?

THe Claremont Hotel is slightly hidden away but still looking good in its smart livery.

Can you remember Len Jennings' printing business from 1938 on the corner? Eventually, his two sons, Trevor and Ralph, ran their own businesses in other parts of the town.

On the bend of the road stood a shop for many years known as Slaney’s furniture store.

Joseph Slaney closed his premises in 1882 and the building was then demolished to make way for a new road that is today’s Argyle Road.

Further along West Street was West Side

Merchants, which operated from 1963, long before the major out of town DIY shops arrived. It supplied builders and individuals for years, with products like wood, nails, and paints. How many of you can remember the ‘Green Shield’ stamps you could collect when purchasing wood, goods and other items from the store? THis shop was finally taken over by Olbys and then Covers until finally it was closed and demolished to make way for today’s Seaward Court retirement flats.

Opposite these buildings is one most people do not even notice. It was at one time the Goodwood boarding establishment, run by two sisters. Shops are today housed on the ground floor, though the outward appearance of the building has remained unaltered.

THere was also Brickley & Co ironmongers and mechanical engineers.

THe second of Bognor’s well-known butcher's shops was Mants, which operated from West Street. How many of you can remember when sausages cost 9d (4p) for a pound, three pork chops cost 1/- (5p) and a leg of lamb 5d (2 1/2p) per lb? THese prices were displayed by Mants, which had, as one of its claims to fame, that during the war it was reported in the press that sausages were available and they sold over 3,000lb. in less than two hours on one particular day.

Sadly, the shops now within this building often change hands because of the fluctuations in trade.

West Street today appears to be used for vehicular access to other parts of the town. THere is now Radio Respect with its secondhand records and CDs for sale opposite the local history museum.

Oysters and fine wine help Grace PostSport complete her marathon number 29 FOR MOST people, running a single marathon is a feat to be proud of.

But for Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners' Grace Natoli she just has to keep on running and has now notched up her 29th in style after being served up oysters, red wine and other gourmet nibbles along the way.

New York, London, Paris, Berlin and Lyon have all been destinations where this intrepid runner has completed a 26 mile race.

But in her search for the next big race, Grace stumbled on the event in Medoc.

Taking part on roads just north of the French city of Bordeaux, the marathon saw wine, oysters, croissants and ice cream served up at the drinks stations to the 8,500 runners.

Grace said: "THe atmosphere was electric. It soon became clear it this was going to be one great big running party."

All in all, Grace said the race went through some 63 chateaux servicing 22 drinks stations along the 26.2 mile route so there was going plenty of opportunity to sample the wine.

She added: "THis was not going to be an ordinary marathon where you feel lonely despite being surrounded by thousands of other runners. THis was different.

"THere was laughter, music and cheerful runners and locals cheering you. I could get used to this, I thought to myself. Having oysters at mile 25 and ice cream at mile 25.5 finished off this running part to a tee."

And when she reached the end in a time of 5 hours 51 minutes, what was the prize? Along with a medal, Grace also received a prized 2009 red wine in a wooden presentation box.

Closer to home, a cohort of 20 runners took part in the Littlehampton 10k on Sunday.

Peter Lee led the way for the club, finishing in 37 minutes 1 second, finishing fifth overall and first in his age category.

Debutant for the club Byron Kearns recorded a PB of 38:34 while first lady home for the club was Jess THomson, achieving another PB for the club of 42:07.

Michael Manwill, Josey Faggetter, Gary Smith, Carl Bryant and Andy Miles all finished under 50 minutes. Stuart THomson and Robert Little finished just ahead of Debbie Patching on 55 minutes.

Zoe Hemes continued her impressive form since joining in January (1:00:13) while Donna Vincent grabbed herself a PB (1:01) just ahead of Juliette Garrett and Lisa Broad.

CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to banish their early season Blues and register their first victory of the campaign sooner rather than later.

Director of Rugby Paul Colley has placed an emphasis on home-grown talent with the first XV featuring 12 players who have come through the youth ranks at Oaklands Park.

But, as it is sometimes inevitable, patience seems to be the name of the game after Chi lost both of their opening matches in London South One. THe latest defeat came last weekend when the Blues were unable to take advantage of a fast start to hold off a spirited Tottonians side, eventually losing 30-22.

Next up for Chi is a trip to Kent to play a strong Medway side tomorrow (3pm) who have put up 70 points in winning their opening two matches so far.

Blues could have, and perhaps should have, taken something from the match against Tottonians last weekend.

An early lineout saw the ball spun out wide and skipper Charlie Wallace touched down in the corner.

From the restart, an inside pass from Sam Renwick wrong footed the defence and Ben Polhill was on hand to dot down next to the posts, 12 - 0 with 15 minutes on the clock.

But the visitors started to chip away at the score, so that with 45 minutes played they had edged into a 17-12 lead.

Chi responded well. Ben Robson cut inside to outpace the defenders and touch down, with a twisting lunge across the line, 19-17.

But that was as close as they got.

With Blues looking for a bonus point try, a long clearance kick deep into Tottonians’ territory was returned by the fast running full back for a simple pass and easy score under the posts. A Tom Hutchin penalty closed the gap to 22-24 with just over 20 minutes to play.

But the visitors scored two further penalties to seal the victory and deny Chi a losing bonus point.

ATHLETICS: Chichester Runners and Athletics Club's athletes are rounding off the season on a high with a series of good performances.

Last month, Andy Hall travelled to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham to compete in the British Masters’ Track & Field Championships with entries into the hammer and weight throw in the 55 - 60 age group.

With four of the top five performers this year with the 6kg hammer the competition was always going to be close, but conditions made the circle particularly slippery.

Having watched many of the competitors lose their footing or throw the hammer into the cage, Andy opted to throw off two turns rather than three.

In second place after round one, he produced a longer throw of 40.89m in the fourth round to become the British champion.

In the early afternoon, conditions improved slightly for the weight throw where Andy threw a new PB of 14.24 to finish runner up by just 30cm.

Elsewhere, the club's youngsters did the club proud at the Sussex Track & Field Championships last weekend with the Under 13 squad finishing fourth while it was third for the Under 15s.

A number of athletes also doubled up in the cross country as 28 club members were in the field of more than 350 for the latest West Sussex Fun Run League match at Fittleworth on September 2.

THis brilliant turn-out resulted in the club finishing in sixth place with 111 points (only seven below the winners).

THe club contingent was James Baker, Jason Snow, David Pike, Emma Hughes, Mike Moorcroft, Richard Holder, Tim Brown, Marcus Hammerton, Simon Ludlam, Nadia Anderson, Dan Busher, Tony Cooley, Elizabeth Robinson, Amanda Godfrey, Sue Barty, Peter Anderson, Jeremy Harrison, Nicola Jolly, Sue Baker, Vicky Irwin, Trevor Baker, Harry Mitton, Dave Barty, Martin Fryer, Gillian Brown, Laura Holder, Clare Snow and Jill Renson, plus Hal Edgar running in the junior race. * Entries are still being accepted for the Chichester Half Marathon.

THe event on October 7 will bring hundreds of runners from across the south together to take part in one of three races: the half marathon, the ten miler and half marathon relay.

RUGBY: Bognor RFC will be looking to make it two wins from two to kick-start their Hampshire Premier season.

THe Purple and Greens head to Basingstoke tomorrow (3pm) keen to back up an opening day bonus point victory over Millbrook.

After a flying start, the result never looked in doubt for the Hampshire Avenue side as three tries in each half secured a 39-5 victory.

Skipper Josh Burgess said: "I’m happy with how the boys played today, it’s not easy facing a big rival early in the season.

But we came out on top."

First to cross was debutant full back Dan Robinson who finished well in the corner after soft hands from centres David Sweeney and Sam Newcombe.

Shane Stevens and Paddy Burnett also struck in the first half either side of a sloppy try for the visitors.

With Bognor also slotting over a penalty it was 20-5 at half time.

Into the second period and it was all the home side. Former skipper George Castleton weaved in and out of a few defenders before crashing over.

Centre Newcombe and winger Stevens rounded off the scoring in style.

Free-scoring Chi City get their RUR Cup defence underway

Cup boost for Shea's Lions PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea has praised his side for the spirit shown in their FA Cup run which brought a welcome windfall to the club's coffers.

THe SCFL Premier side bowed out of the competition in the first qualifying round last weekend after a 2-0 defeat to Bostik Premier side Whitehawk.

More than 200 people packed into Nyetimber Lane to watch a valiant effort from Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds side against a team competing at two leagues above them.

And, despite the defeat, Shea said there was plenty to build on for the rest of the campaign.

He said: "I thought we were the better side in the first half - everyone who was there will agree with that - but that came without us being threatening in the final third.

"We got punished by two goals and the first one was due to a lack of concentration. THe level we were playing against just told in the end.

We certainly matched them and I thought 2-0 was probably slightly unfair to us."

Pagham's run to the competition netted the club a prize money windfall of more than ÂŁ5,000.

Shea said the money would be reinvested in the facilities at Nyetimber Lane - with a new dishwasher high on the priority list.

He said: "It does cost a lot of money to keep a football club going.

"Anyone who turned up on Saturday would see how the ground looks. We are all about improving where we can and if we can improve little bits then we will."

Pagham followed up their spirited cup performance with a disappointing 0-0 draw at Broadbridge Heath in midweek which saw three players sent off.

THat result leaves the Lions third in the league, still undefeated but seven points off top spot.

Pagham have no game this weekend because of a bye in the FA Vase but return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Worthing United in the RUR Cup (7.45pm).

THe Lions will be without last year's leading scorer, Dan Simmonds, who has joined Wessex Premier side AFC Portchester.

Shea said: "It's disappointing but we do have options up front so we will just kick on."

FREE-SCORING Chichester City have goals in their eyes as they look to take their tabletopping league form into the cup.

Miles Rutherford's side have been lethal in recent weeks, scoring 14 goals in their last three matches.

Ten of those have come in the past week.

First, Chi defeated Peacehaven & Telscombe 6-1 with Ellis Martin, Rob Hutchings, Matt Axell (2), David Herbert and Joao Andrade getting the goals.

THey followed that up on Tuesday with a 4-2 win at home to Loxwood as Andrade, Herbert (2) and Sam Ndluv scored.

THose six points extended City's lead at the top of the SCFL Premier where they have won six of their first seven matches.

Next up for Rutherford's side is a trip to Crawley-based Oakwood tomorrow in the RUR Cup (3pm).

Having won the competition last season, Chi will be keen to avoid any potential slip-ups against their SCFL Division One opponents.

With Oakwood struggling in the league below, on paper it appears as though City will be able to keep up their fine form and secure a comfortable win.

Double delight for Chi Ladies

CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is urging his players to enjoy that winning feeling as they continued their excellent start to the season with two wins in four days.

THe Oaklands Park side have started the National South campaign as they mean to go on by chalking up a 100 per cent record from their first four matches.

With 12 points from 12, Chi sit top of the league ahead of a tough test on Sunday when promotion-chasing Coventry United make the trip south (2pm).

City will go into the match on a high after a

late Molly Clark strike sealed all three points at MK Dons last weekend.

THen, Smith's side sealed a second derby win this month over Portsmouth with a 2-1 victory over the Blues at Oaklands Park.

Goals from Hollie Wride and Chloe Melton made sure Chi remain unbeaten at the top of the table with the luxury of resting a few players ahead of the crunch match this weekend.

Smith admitted he was delighted with the win which was secured after he rested several players ahead of the Coventry match.

He said: "THeir attitude has been impeccable.

THey all know why we have done it and we've come here with some development players who have gained some valuable experience.

"THe attitude from them has been fantastic.

We said that we would have lost this game 2-0 last year, so to show the turnaround in the early part of the season has been excellent."

Selsey have an FA Vase shock in sight SELSEY are out to spring a cup shock as they take a six-match unbeaten run into the FA Vase.

Daren Pearce's side welcome Southern Counties East Premier side Bearsted to the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium tomorrow (3pm) in the qualifying round of the national non-league knockout competition.

Even though the visitors are facing a lengthy 180-mile round trip, Selsey will be tackling an uphill task.

THe visiting Kent side play at a step higher than the SCFL Division One Blues and have already defeated SCFL Premier leaders Chichester City in the FA Cup this season.

But Selsey go into the match full of confidence after a 0-0 draw at home to

Seaford Town last time out extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham are also in FA Vase action against a higher ranked side, heading to Wimbledon to play Combined Counties Premier side Colliers Wood United tomorrow (3pm) Steve Bailey's side also have a midweek trip to league rivals Storrington to look forward to with a RUR Cup tie on Tuesday (7.15pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham broke their duck with a 3-2 win against Ferring last weekend thanks to goals from Alex Barnes, Luke Gregory and Ryan Coombes.

THe Robins will look to follow up that victory tomorrow when they welcome Cowfold to Walton Lane (3pm).

Pearce points to hard work as unbeaten Bognor march on Next Game

CARSHALTON (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has praised the work ethic of his young squad as their good start to the season continues.

After six matches unbeaten in the league, which has lifted them to third in the Bostik Premier, the Rocks took their good form into the FA Cup last weekend.

Goals from Jimmy Muitt (2), Brad Lethbridge, Dan Smith and Mason Walsh secured a comfortable victory over Whitstable Town in the first qualifying round of the competition.

THe victory secured Bognor a minimum of ÂŁ6,000 prize money and also sets up a tie with Bostik North side AFC Sudbury at home on September 22.

Before then, though, Rocks return to league action with a trip to Carshalton Athletic tomorrow (3pm).

THen, it is league cup action as the Velocity Trophy throws up a home match against Sussex rivals and fellow Bostik Premier side Whitehawk on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Pearce, though, believes the moraleboosting win in the cup will set his young side up well for the challenges to come.

He said: "Any good win by five clear goals away from home in the FA Cup, especially when their goalkeeper was man of the match, cannot be bad.

"When you start winning a few games the players get more confidence in their ability

and that can lead to better performances and results.

"THeir attitude from the start of the season towards hard work - which is what matters in football - has been excellent.

"In our situation it's good to have a young hungry side that wants to improve.

"We still have a few Achilles heels to work on - we're giving away opportunities which are not down to opponents' good play but more down to our sloppy play.

"We got away with it on Saturday but it still remains a work in progress."

Bognor's opponents tomorrow, Carshalton, have made a solid start to the new season.

THe south London side have taken eight points from their opening five matches which means they sit 10th in the 22-team division.

With one of the best defensive records in the league, Bognor will need to be at their creative best to break down their defence.

Pearce said: "I watched Carshalton very recently when I saw them play Worthing and they lost 2-1. It was a very tight game which they could have taken something from and I expect another tight one there tomorrow.

"We will create chances and it's just a case of taking some of them and making sure we keep it tight at the back.

"But then, if you look at results, every team in this league can beat each other so we will need to prepare well."

Rocks recruit two youngsters ROCKS boss Jack Pearce has two new additions to the Bognor squad as he looks to keep the club's good start to the season going.

Left-back Joe Tomlinson has joined the Nyewood Land outfit on a long-term loan from Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion while Charlie Osbourne has made a move to the Rocks from Portsmouth's development squad.

THe moves coincide with a couple of departures from the club.

Defender Archie Edwards, a former professional with Charlton Athletic, has left the club along with Harvey Sparks, a summer recruit from Worthing. THe latter is set to join Bostik South side Horsham in the search for first team football.

Pearce said: "Harvey is leaving the club by mutual consent and Archie is going to look for a club nearer to where he lives and we have circulated his availability.

"THe club would like to thank both players for their efforts for us this season and, of course, we wish them both well for the future.

"Both Joe and Charlie have come in and we look forward to working with them to help them to develop and to enhance our options as we tackle the season ahead."

SIX WEEKS in from the start of the season and so far things are going all right.

Last weekend was probably our best performance of the season as we won 5-0 away at Whitstable Town in the FA Cup. On the whole, everyone played quite well.

I don't think the fact we were playing lower league opposition had too much to do with it.

It's just that we played really well and had a good attitude towards the game and that showed in the result.

Obviously, we scored some unbelievable goals, too, which is always nice. Jimmy got a couple and Mason got his first for us - it was great to see their efforts.

THe reason for such a good performance was a combination of factors I think.

We were playing lower opposition but we are also playing more and more together.

I think key to the result and getting five goals was that we did not let up after the break.

In previous games when we had gone a couple of goals up perhaps we had eased off slightly. But on Saturday we kept on going forward and we really killed them off.

After going in two up at half time, we carried on doing what we do best and played well after the break. THat showed with the goals that we scored in the second half.

THe first six weeks have also been good for me personally.

I'm happy with how it's going and it's always nice to get recognised with a couple of man of the match awards.

I think a lot of it is about setting an example a bit more as one of the more senior players during training and in matches.

I think that is helping me play better.

Wearing the captain's armband of course should not have that much of an impact

on the approach to games.

As a player, you always like to play to the best of your ability whenever you can.

But so far my stint as captain has been going quite well.

Looking at things objectively, wearing that armband may have had an impact but I always believe you need to give your best whether you are captain or not.

We have obviously had a few changes to the squad in the last few days.

Joe has come in at left back from Brighton and he put in a good debut at Whitstable.

Charlie has also come in from Portsmouth. He has done well in training and is a good lad to be fair to him.

Having new faces coming into the squad has never caused any issues at Bognor.

It's always been the same at the club.

We give them a good welcome and as long as the right person coming in has no ego or attitude then they soon become part of the crowd.

It's always gone quite well as generally people come to the club for the right reasons.

It's never about money but because they want to play good football while winning as many games as we can and having a laugh as we go.

THe next step for us tomorrow is a trip to Carshalton.

Whenever we go away we usually get some info about strengths and weaknesses and how they play.

We obviously have that before the match but preparation is always about us and how we play.

Most of the teams we play against it's fair to say that we will dominate possession so it is about what to do with it.

If we look at the goals we concede then that is through our own mistakes - we very rarely get cut open by good football.

So we need to focus on how we defend and attack and hopefully we can get a result.

Sarah, along with colleagues Oksana Simconok and Gaynor Heath, were filmed for a fly-on-the-wall Channel 4 documentary called British Workers Wanted, which revealed young people were more interested in being YouTube stars than working.

And the show proved so popular that a review in the Daily Telegraph noted: "Sarah and Gaynor were immensely likable, terrifically funny characters – chain-smoking and hard-working but also not afraid to dish out a bloody good rollicking to anyone who crossed them. It was impossible not to enjoy their company. They would be an excellent addition to Gogglebox."

Fast forward to today and Sarah has overseen the finishing touches to the new-look Opus Loco, which has been helped hugely by joining forces with London agency CRS Group.

Sarah, who was stopped by viewers for selfies after the show was screened, explains: "We enjoyed making the programme and it helped put us and Bognor Regis on the map. Next, we wanted to revamp the office and generally overhaul the business to create a new, fresh impression with even more professionalism. We are under one umbrella with CRS Group and it’s a very exciting time for the business.

Meanwhile, Sarah says she is delighted with the new-look office and has paid tribute to Darren Strange, of ATT Property Services (07478 203345) for masterminding such a stylish refurbishment. "I would highly recommend Darren as he has done such a wonderful job and we are thrilled with what he has achieved on our behalf," she said.
