Ice rink votes 'short-sighted' VOTES to reject hopes of a Bognor Regis ice rink have been condemned as shortsighted. A call by thousands of residents for the leisure facility in a multi-use building was defeated in a series of decisions by Arun District Council’s members. THey decisively rejected calls by the Liberal Democrat minority for further investigations, including the building of a multi-use hall, into the matter and to
look at all potential locations. Councillors on the Conservativeled local authority instead pledged to support a return of the successful Christmas ice rink and provide nonfinancial backing to a commercial operator with a sound business case for a permanent ice rink on the outskirts of the town. Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said it was wrong to push an ice rink to an out
of town site. “THe idea of an ice rink in a multipurpose hall has been around for many years. We should be keeping all the options open. THat is the best way we can serve the regeneration of Bognor Regis and the people of the town. “You have the vision of a mole and nothing more than that,” he said. Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Beach) said: “THis does not commit us to any
particular design on any particular site. It is for a multi-use facility, including an ice rink, in Bognor Regis and that means anywhere in Bognor Regis. “We should not be ruling anything in or out at this stage.” Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said: “We have been looking at this as a multi-use facility anyway and we will continue to look at it as multi-use."
