Safety demand for busy road TOWN councillor Steve Goodheart has called for measures to improve safety of one of the busiest roads in Bognor Regis.

Cllr Goodheart said the northern section of London Road needed work such as speed-reducing humps, a pedestrian crossing and bollards to stop a serious accident occurring among its constant stream of drivers and pedestrians of all ages.

"Something needs doing, without a

doubt," he said. "It's not just because of Edward Bryant School, the library and the police station but because it's a rat run into the town centre from the dualcarriageway (Hotham Way).

"The two-way traffic flow makes it very dangerous for motorists as well as for pedestrians.

"If you look at Chichester, Kingsham Road has a school and a police station and it has speed humps. That makes the

traffic slow down and it should be the same for London Road."

Cllr Goodheart (I, Hotham) is a longterm resident of the area and has seen accidents occur along the road. He has written to the joint western Arun area committee to seek members' help to progress his proposals. The committee has county, district and town councillors.

"I propose introducing speed-reducing humps along the road from the town,

travelling north from the library past Edward Bryant School and beyond the police station," he told them.

"London Road is a well-used gateway into and exit from the town. The access from Hotham Way dual-carriageway to the junction of Upper Bognor Road (which leads to London Road) is a very tight corner, with articulated lorries frequently blocking the whole road.

New season of concerts at club TWO SPECIAL concerts are the highlights of the latest season at Bognor Regis Music Club.

The coming year will be the club's 41st season and will continue its tradition of staging 15 concerts by a mixture of professional artists and club members and their contacts.

Chairman Chris Coote said: "I am looking forward to our new season - our aim being to make chamber and vocal music in a variety of styles available to as many people as possible in the delightful and intimate setting of the Bognor Club."

The first of the special concerts will take place on October 20 in aid of the Amber Trust's work with helps and partially sighted children to have the best possible chance to meet their musical needs and fulfil their potential.

Extraordinary pianist Derek Paravicini will be performing and showing his skills as one of the best musical entertainers of his generation. Yet he is blind, autistic and has severe learning difficulties.

Dubbed The Human iPod in the USA, Derek has a repertoire of tens of thousands of pieces he has learned rapidly just by listening to them.

He shot to fame when he was nine by playing jazz with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London. In the past few years alone, he has featured in Extraordinary People on Channel 5 and on BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. Sharing the concert with him will be the gifted teenage violinist and local resident, Poppy McGhee.

Her skills and dedication have seen her join the National Children's Orchestra and National Schools Symphony Orchestra.

This will be followed by the club's celebrity concert by the Rosamunde Trio with 25 UK tours to their name and festival appearances around Europe and in the USA. The day after their concert in Bognor Regis will see them perform the same programme at London's King's Place to mark the centenary of the Armistice which ended the First World War. "I have a personal connection with their pianist, Martino Tirimo, who has taught me in masterclasses at Morley College in London for over 30 years.

"He is a magical pianist, having performed series devoted to Beethoven's 32 sonatas and Schubert's 21 sonatas," said Mr Coote.

These performers will follow the likes of famous violinist Tasmin Little and Britain's favourite clarinettist, Emma Johnson.

The club's latest season starts on October 6 with an evening with Louise Russell and friends at its meeting place in Sudley Road.

Other concerts before Christmas include a performance by the Pallant Piano Group on November 24 and a December 8 members' musical evening held by club member Alison Blenkinsopp.

Mr Coote added: "I believe we are different to other concert societies in our area in that we actively encourage participation by club members and their musical friends."

BUTLIN'S wants to increase the number of employees at one of its homes in Bognor Regis by nearly 50 per cent.

Planning permission has been sought to add a part two and part three-storey extension to Ashley House in Aldwick Road. The extra space would enable up to 30 extra members of staff to live at the property. It was converted from a care home in 2016 with 36 bedrooms with 70 bedspaces.

A statement by the company's planning consultant, Rob Murgatroyd, to Arun District Council says: "The Ashley House operation has demonstrated itself to be a good

neighbour and a successful means to meet a specialised niche in housing demand in the town.

"With continued additional demand in that specialised sector, the proposal is a proven successful means to meet demand and relieve pressue on other forms of accommodation."

All the rules which govern those who currently live in the property would apply to the employees in the proposed extra rooms, he added.

A consultation event with nearby residents saw only four people attend in contrast to the 163 protest letters about the original scheme.

Skilled Merrin, 22, was among the apprentices who received their certificates at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show for graduating from their courses.

She was presented with her paperwork

by Monty Halls in a ceremony held by British Marine.

The marine biologist said: "It has been a privilege to welcome the next generation into the marine industry today.

"I encourage any opportunity to celebrate the many pathways into the industry and it is testament to the hard work of these individuals that we are here today seeing so many smiles on the faces of the students, their parents and the numerous employers these young

people will now be working for."

Merrin worked as a soft furnishings apprentice with Selsey firm Oceanair.

She said: "I started at Oceanair just over 18 months ago, coming straight from sixth form into an apprentice position.

"This has allowed me to take my theoretical skills and develop my knowledge in a practical, working environment."

Merrin trained on the job at world leading blinds, shades and soft furnishings designer and manufacturer Oceanair. She learned to use all the various pieces of machinery and rotated around roles in the department.

These included roman blinds and soft furnishings like curtains, cushions, bed linen, throws and embroidery.

Merrin received continual assessment from her colleagues at Oceanair.

She was among nearly 70 graduates at the latest of the annual ceremonies.

It was open to all graduating apprentices from British Marine member companies and saw a cross section of skills represented by the graduates.

British Marine training manager Blue Davies said: "Today, we have proudly welcomed 69 graduates into the marine industry.

"Apprenticeships are the key to both the growth of the industry and the wider skills development in the UK." Lesley Robinson, British Marine's chief executive, added:"British Marine is continuing to develop trailblazer apprenticeship standards to support the industry. The fact that we develop them with groups of employers, training providers and colleges ensures they meet the needs of the industry."

STRONG criticisms have been made of the decision to axe the town centre manager role in Bognor Regis.

Senior councillors took turns to express their anger at the departure of Toyubur Rahman.

As reported, Mr Rahman was allowed to leave by the directors of the Bognor Regis Improvement District as they start to set out their programme of action for the main shopping area.

But Arun District Council members on its Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee on Monday said they regretted the move.

Arun’s leader, Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E) said: “He made a really good job of promoting Bognor Regis and organised some highly successful events. I hope the BID will be able to continue in the same vein because he has left them a really good legacy. They need to build on that and the council will be watching them very carefully.”

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said: “I am very disappointed in the fact that Toyubur has been disposed of – it’s the only word I can say.

“I worked with Toyubur all the time he had been in the town. I found him a nice, easy going person and, if you wanted something doing, it was done.

“He was my go-to man and I think he was the go-to man for a lot of other people as well.”

Cllr Trevor Bence (C, Aldwick E) said he found it astonishing ‘that at the peak of his performance’ others were going to get the benefit of Mr Rahman’s

expertise while Bognor Regis was going to miss out.

He contrasted the results of Mr Rahman’s time in the town with the efforts of the previous town centre manager whose controversial legacy was two stalls in the precinct.

“I can’t believe we are as far down the road as we are,” he said.

Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: “The amount of work Toyubur put in and could still have put in to ensure Bognor Regis recovered from what it was like is quite amazing.”

But Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said: “Toyubur has been very successful.

The work he did around bringing the BID process to life was a success and a huge achievement.

“But he also put in place a highly capable board of dedicated people.

“There is a lot from the BID’s perspective I am looking forward to the future to see how they can deliver it. I am very positive about the BID’s future.”

Mr Rahman was chosen as the town centre manager in May, 2014, in a partnership between Arun and Bognor Regis councils, Butlin’s and the University of Chichester.

His work has helped the town centre’s vacancy rate drop to 6.7 per cent from 14 per cent in 2012.

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) told the meeting: “Everyone can see regeneration in Bognor Regis is working.

There is more we can do but things are moving in the right direction.”

` New prom toilets NEW UNISEX toilets are finally set to arrive on Bognor Regis seafront next week.

Arun District Council's group head of economy, Denise Vine, told councillors the loos were set to be lifted by crane on to their promenade site on Tuesday.

The toilets were due to have been in use two months ago but their manufacturer told the council at the last minute they were being delayed.

Temporary loos were then installed as a stopgap measure.

Families may be homeless FROZEN benefits could see large families in social housing in the Arun district become homeless.

Arun District Council’s group head of residential services, Satnam Kaur, said the risk existed that families with three or more children could find themselves unable to afford even subsidised homes.

She was speaking as the council’s draft homelessness and housing strategy was presented to councillors for the first time.

One of the key aspects of the proposed blueprint is to provide support for those who could be without permanent accommodation to avoid them having to move into temporary rooms.

Ms Kaur said the council’s housing officers had only seen a limited impact from universal credit, the government’s latest shake-up of the welfare system, after its full launch in the area on July 4.

“There are 43 households at the moment in receipt of universal credit. The impact that we will see is broader than universal credit.

“There have been a number of different welfare benefit reforms that have come in since 2012,” she said.

These included a freeze on certain benefits, such as housing allowance, until 2019.

“Those households with large families are the ones most financially impacted,” said Ms Kaur. The removal of benefits for more than two children was likely to combine with universal credit to make conditions tougher for them.

“What we need to be really looking

at is affordability issues in the sense that possibly social housing will not be affordable for some households as these impacts take place, Ms Kaur said.

“Social housing is a safety net and, if that is not there, what is there?”

Separate figures from the council show a large rise in the number of families in B&B rooms. There are 110 in that situation this month compared to 35 a year ago.

But the council has succeeded in ensuring those in most need on its housing waiting list can move into social accommodation.

That number has dropped from 441 last September to 298 this month.

Judy Knapp, Arun’s housing services manager, told the housing and customer services working group last Thursday the new strategy replaced three outdated ones.

One of the intended strategy’s objectives was to increase the number of affordable homes. The aim was to ensure 750 affordable homes were built by 2021 and 250 council homes by 2025.

A target of 30 empty properties being re-occupied each year – in keeping with recent years – will also be set.

Another of the intentions is to reduce and relieve homelessness in keeping with the latest law from last April.

A survey of homeless people around the district last November as part of a national snapshot showed 17 were living on the streets compared to 24 the year before.

Most of those in the latest survey were from Arun, some came from along the south coast and two or three were from outside the UK, she said.

Selfish driver jailed for crash

A FELPHAM dangerous driver has been jailed for three years after he ran from the crash scene.

Kevin Zhou, pictured below right, managed to escape from the devastation caused by the head-on collision between the car he was driving and another vehicle.

He ran uninjured from the mangled wreckage without checking on the welfare of anyone else involved.

But the victim, Rusty Brown, from Bognor Regis, sustained life-changing injuries. He was trapped in his car and had to be released by firefighters using hydraulic equipment.

Jobless Zhou, 29, of Summerley Lane, was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday. He was jailed for three years and disqualified from driving for four years from the date of his release.

"Zhou has shown no remorse for his actions by giving no account in interview of the incident or his actions, running from the scene of the collision, where he tried to hide in an outhouse nearby, and arrogantly turning up at work with no concern or worry about what had just happened.

"His actions left a man fighting for his life in his vehicle in a ditch and wondering what happened for his life to change."

The collision occurred just before 12.30am on August 17 last year on the A259 Chichester Road in North Bersted.

No-one else was involved.

He veered into the path of an oncoming blue Mitsubishi Shogun, being driven by Mr Brown.

DNA recovered from the abandoned Jaguar - including blood on the seatbelt - linked Zhou to the scene. He was not at home when police officers called.

He was further connected to the scene when enquiries confirmed he worked at Harwoods and was one of two drivers who could drive the Jaguar. When he arrived for the work after the crash, he told his boss the car had been stolen. But his manager took him to a police station.

Innocent driver injured A BOGNOR REGIS man has spoken of his daily pain after his life was changed by the collision.

Rusty Brown, 45, said he thought Kevin Zhou was a coward and selfish for his actions in dodging responsibility for the crash.

"I now have a metal pin in my thigh, a below-knee amputation and numerous scars from the surgery, including a failed skin/muscle graft which was the worst three days of my life.

"I suffer with soreness and pain every day, and it is mentally and physically draining," said Mr Brown, pictured above left.

"I am still undergoing treatment and will be for the rest of my life in one form or another. It has also severely affected my partner and, in short, we have been punished for life, though no fault of our own."

Mr Brown thanked police - especially PC Ben Henwood - for bringing Zhou to justice, as well as Harwoods, the emergency services at the scene, and the health professionals and friends who had helped his recovery.

But he said the impact of the crash had taken its toll on him.

"Obviously, the injuries I received have had a massive detrimental effect on my health and wellbeing, and have also affected those close to me.

"But Zhou has also ruined his own life, as well as those who care for him, all for one stupid decision.

"The fact he drove dangerously, causing me lifechanging injuries, was horrific, but there was no changing that once it happened.

"He fled from the scene, actively trying to hide from the authorities and not knowing the outcome of my injuries.

"He also showed a complete lack of remorse, which I believe shows his true cowardly and selfish nature," said Mr Brown. "He has never taken responsibility and, obviously, he has little regard for the effect of his actions on others.

"Please spare a thought for those who care about you next time you might be tempted to try something foolhardy in your car."

A pedestrian crossing was required outside Edward Bryant School after its doubling in size in the past few years. Nearby St Mary's Catholic Primary School has also grown and is set to expand further.

Cllr Goodheart said: "The general feeling among residents and business owners in this area is broadly supportive."

Bollards were needed on the pavement outside the former cafe in London Road, he said.

"Cars are often parked half-on and half-off the pavement, which is a great hazard both to traffic and pedestrians. The cafe is on the bend immediately opposite the car park and is a blind corner," added Cllr Goodheart, pictured below.

Campaigners will carry on HUNDREDS of residents have given their continued backing to a housing campaign group in Pagham.

The large turnout delighted the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam) members as they unveiled the latest details of their work to prevent large-scale housing developments around the parish.

Last Saturday's drop-in occasion at Pagham Village Hall saw Pagam chairman Alan Pivett outline how the targets used for housebuilding had changed, as reported in the Post.

This meant less demand was likely for homes in the area to reduce the need for the proposed estates for some 1,000 dwellings included in Arun District Council's land use blueprint.

He said: "We don't need the same level of housing any more because the number of people who need them is dropping according to the Office for National Statistics.

"People have a right to have a home and to live in village where they feel comfortable but we don't want to see Pagham destroyed.

"We believe one of the biggest culprits in this is West Sussex County Council.

"No-one understands how Pagham Road is expected to take the volume of traffic that could result from these developments. It just does not add up."

He said opponents of the housing in Sefter, Road, Hook Lane and Pagham Road could still voice their objections about the plans to Arun.

"There is nothing wrong with that while the council is still considering the plans.

The more information there is, the better."

Among the visitors were Pagham newcomers, Gerald and Rosemary Osmon, who moved to the area three months ago from Fife in Scotland.

The couple said they faced a similar situation there with plans for 1,000 homes and a primary and a secondary school but nothing had happened in the 17 years they lived there.

Mr Osmon, 87, said: "The road going to Chichester is not very safe now. If something happens on it, such as road works, the queues are ridiculously long.

"You wonder how that will cope with hundreds more houses feeding into it."

Pagam's vice-chairman, Gill Homer, said: "Today has gone really well. People are disappointed that the housing proposals are in Arun's local plan.

"But they are still interested in the information we have been giving them. We are not just letting this go and accepting it.

In that respect, people want to know what they can still do."

As well as Pagam, the Bad Deal campaigners from North Bersted were present, as well as the Campaign to Protect Rural England and Pagham Ponies.

Meanwhile, planning and design consultancy Barton Willmore said latest statistics showed the Arun district needed 84 fewer homes to be built a year than previously thought. This adds up to more than 1,600 during the 20-year life of the local plan.

The reduction was caused by a cut in the predicted population growth, less inward migration and the ongoing Brexit uncertainty.

Households set to have council tax support scheme changed CHANGES are being planned to the way council tax support for poorer households in the Arun district is paid.

The worst affected homes, said by officers to be a minority, will find themselves paying an extra £13.13 a week in council tax if the proposals are approved.

A hardship scheme will be operated on an individual basis.

The vast majority of households - a total of 4,113 - will be better off.

The first stage in bringing in the banded scheme from next April 1 saw Arun's overview select committee back them. Their decision will be reported to

the council's cabinet of senior members for public consultation before a final decision to approve the banding.

Alan Peach, Arun's group head of corporate support, told the committee the proposal was necessary because of the launch of universal credit in the area from July 4.

Universal credit's system of monthly changes in payments would mean numerous council tax bills for claimants with the current means-tested scheme.

"This is confusing for the customer and costly for the council," said Mr Peach.

Bringing in £50 bands for weekly income would overcome this, he added

The next rink will be bigger, with a larger viewing and skate exchange area, boast more stalls selling Christmas treats and a variety of exciting entertainments designed to create a real winter wonderland feel. To add to the festive feeling, Father Christmas will have a specially built grotto to call his own.

James Cole, the operator of Ice Skating on the Prom, said: "We had a brilliant year last year, with over 10,000 people enjoying a skate on the ice.

"We are looking forward to coming back this year, bigger and better."

Paul Wells said: "We are excited to be working with the operators of Ice Skating on the Prom and we will be extending the Christmas winter experience into the town centre."

Cllr Phil Hitchins, chairman of Arun District Council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee, said: "I am really looking forward to this year's winter skating experience.

"What a great way to welcome residents and visitors to Bognor Regis."

The ice rink plans are subject to all the relevant legal approvals being in place.

These are being progressed through the appropriate channels.

As reported, Arun's councillors this month backed the idea of the temporary ice rink but rejected a petition signed by nearly 2,500 residents for a permanent rink. They did, though, agree to work with an operator who wanted to construct a building - which could be used for a rink - on the outskirts of the town.

The shot by Craig Kiltie is among those to feature in the 2019 publication from the Bognor Regis in Picture group members on Facebook.

The calendar is being launched from 9am to 12.30pm tomorrow at West Park Cafe in Aldwick and from 1pm-4.30pm at Rainbows in the Arcade.

Profits from the calendar will go to the Sussex Snowdrop Trust charity which helps life-limited children and their families.

Members of the group are set to beat the £650 they raised for the good cause with their first calendar for this year.

Alan Barber, the group's administrator, said: "We set the group up last November with the aim of showing images of the local area taken by ourselves.

"We decided to produce a calendar for 2018 using some of the images provided The project very quickly grew in size and became quite popular with local people."

A total of 150 copies were sold. Already, pre-orders for the A3-sized latest calendar at £8 have reached some 200 copies before its publication on Monday.

Singing and dancing in the rain as festival survives heavy downpours DIRE weather failed to stop Bognor Regis' reign as the folk capital of the county.

Heavy rain and strong winds dominated the town’s latest South Downs Folk Festival. But poor conditions did not deter the thousands of people who either took part or listened to the music on offer.

There were more than 90 performances in 11 venues around the town centre over four days as well as a host of open-air events. Many still took place in spite of the poor conditions.

Organiser Roger Nash said he was pleased with the event.

“Despite the appalling weather, it has been excellent. There has been a really good buzz about the whole weekend.

“Everything has gone to plan. We’ve had to move a few things around because of the weather, which is a shame, but we have managed to put them all on, which is the name of the game.

“We’ve had a lot of good feedback and I think people are keen to see something like this happen again.

“People appreciate the fact that others have come from far and wide to be here this weekend, which is good,” he said.

A special feature of the festival, the sixth to be held, was the first ukulele festival at the weekend. Ukulele maestro Pete Brown had his audience spellbound as he staged a masterclass.

His 60-minute session showed how to get the most from the four-stringed instrument.

His workshop attracted some 20 devotees early on the final day of the South

Downs Folk Festival to pick up some tips.

Among them was Bognor Regis early years teacher, and folk singer Angela O’Brien, 56, who lives in Selsey. She said: “It’s really enjoyable to see someone who has got such tremendous skills in action.

“He was brilliant at explaining what he was doing and giving us the opportunity to have a go.”

Mr Brown said: “Events like this are always good fun. It just takes time and effort to become good at the ukulele.”

He returned to the Alexandra Theatre later in the day for a performance with his band, Locum.

The events were among 27 which comprised the ukulele festival.

The first ukulele performers spent two hours performing 18 tunes from I Am Sailing to When I’m 64 and Blue Moon in the marquee on the Place St Maur.

Some 100 players took part in a joyous and toe-tapping appreciation of the instrument. Those up front came from the University of the Third Age groups in Bognor Regis and Worthing as well as Regis Ukes.

Joining them in the audience were about 40 players from the Making Your Mark sessions held in Bognor Regis this summer.

One of them was West Meads resident Pat Hopper, 71. She said: “Taking part was absolutely brilliant. I have not been playing the ukulele for very long and this is the biggest musical event I have taken part in.”

The festival began last Thursday with

a concert byTradARR. Friday’s headline acts were O’Hooley & Tidow followed by the excellent and breathtaking Merryhell.

Both nights in the Alexandra Theatre were well supported.

Saturday saw Steve Harley, famous for his fantastic hits in the seventies, and his acoustic trio delight a sold-out theatre and iconic band Irish band, Dervish, closed the festival on Sunday in front of another packed house.

Other performers included Flossie Malavialle and Bath Folk Youth Band, Fred’s House, The Rude Mechanicals, Laughing Gravy, Purple Shoes and the Georgia Lewis Band.

The festival also included the first Big Seaside Sing on Saturday and Sunday.

Making their debut at the festival was the Sussex West Girl Guides Choir.

They had to seek shelter because the rain stopped their intended performance in the London Road precinct.

One of their singers, Seren Fletcher, 12, said: “Being a choir is about making new friends and going places and singing, which is really nice. Learning new songs is good as well.

“It’s scary at first singing to an audience but you have got everyone else to help you.”

Joan Salmon, the choir’s administrative officer, said: “It’s our first time here and everyone is looking forward to it.”

Among the songs in their repertoire were Life is Music and La Bamba.

` Royal charity A HEALTH charity with a Bognor Regis support group has been given royal approval.

The National Osteoporosis Society has received a rare backing from the Queen to be known as the Royal Osteoporosis Society from 2019.

The award marks the 25th year of the landmark decision of the World Health Organisation to formally recognise the disease, which causes bones to lose their strength.

Claire Severgnini, president of the charity, said: "This is an incredible honour which marks a significant moment in osteoporosis and bone health history."

MP visits club MP NICK GIBB congratulated champion sailors from Felpham Sailing Club.

The young yachtsmen and women took the team prize in the annual West Sussex Schools Youth Sailing Association's regatta at Cobnor Activity Centre.

More than 140 sailors from across the county competed and Felpham finished ahead of runners-up Seaford College and Chichester Yacht Club in third place.

Mr Gibb visited the club after its success to launch its annual bathtub race and said: "It's a wonderful and welcoming club whose members encourage people of all ages to try their hand at sailing.

"A significant number of members are trained instructors."

The Felpham club fielded a team of

40 children in 33 racing dinghies in the regatta.

The Topper Fleet was dominated by Felpham's Oliver Wattam, who came first in every race.

In the Rookie Fleet, Felpham's sailors took four of the first five places.

Ruby Richards and Mia Gray traded places at the top of the results before Ruby came first overall. Charlie Pullen finished fourth and Oscar Ede was ahead of him by just half a point.

The sailors negotiated the challenging channels around Cobnor with their tidal flow, moored yachts, sailing traffic and changing conditions.

Paralympic gold medallist Helena Lucas was guest of honour.

New decision TOWN councillors have performed a U-turn about the future of distinctive Bognor Regis buildings.

They have decided to object to plans to demolish 2-4 Waterloo Square. In a rare move, they re-considered the proposals by B5 Ltd. Their latest decision for Arun District Council to consider when it makes the final decision states: "Having considered the numerous correspondence and reports that have become available...since our first comments were submitted, the town council are now minded to object to the application and wish to have this officially recorded."

After the meeting, Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) welcomed the change of mind. He said: "When considering the demolition of an historically important building in a

conservation area, we need to ensure that all options to preserve heritage are fully explored. I do not feel it is unreasonable to ask for evidence to back up claims that the building is beyond saving or that it is not economically viable. At this stage, that's all that is being asked for."

B5 Ltd's planning agent, Philip Hamblin, has told Arun the buildings are in a state of disrepair.

In a submission on Monday, he says: "The buildings have been neglected for many years and, as such, the exterior of the building has been unable to protect the inner structure. Overall, the buildings at 2-4 Waterloo Square are way beyond economic repair."

The two and three-storey buildings with Dutch or Flemish gable facades date back to before 1903.

WHEN I started out in recruitment, I had no idea that it would turn me into a sceptical, unbelieving person. In my naivety, when I first heard an excuse that someone was unable to attend work, I believed them.

Now, I’m just old and weary of people fobbing me off with rubbish excuses as to why they can’t do something. Really, it boils down to the fact if you say you are going to do something, then commit and do it, if not, don’t say you can’t do it and certainly don’t give a rubbish excuse to make yourself feel better, because it doesn’t make me feel better. Toll of scams is highlighted SCAM victims around the Bognor Regis and Chichester area lose £20,000 on average to fraudsters.

Some six out of ten of those who have been conned out of their savings is more than 75, the area's Citizens Advice help points have revealed.

More than half of those who have approached its three centres live alone.

Citizens Advice was so concerned by the number of people who have been falling victim to the tricks by email and phone it helped to organise its biggest event in the area to raise awareness of the issue.

The 43 delegates from a range of organisations who attended the showcase occasion last Thursday were believed to represent 100,000 people.

The most powerful presentation came from a scam victim, identified only as Sally.

She was tricked out of just over £10,000 by an online 'sweetheart'. The lonely pensioner told those present how the lying romeo spun her a series of lies, deceits and denials to cruelly play on her emotions.

"I feel horrible talking about it now," she said. "Looking back now, I feel embarrassed, humiliated, sad and very, very angry."

Her daughter, Helen, spoke of how she found her mother was looking at remortgaging her home to send even more money to the fake suitor.

Convincing her two sisters their mother needed help led to arguments. "Crimes like this affect whole families," she said.

West Sussex County Council also jointly

organised the event. Its cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, Cllr Debbie Kennard, said: "We know that every day in West Sussex people are falling victim to fraud, whether that's online, unwanted telephone calls or doorstep callers.

"Although anyone can fall victim to a scam, we know that the vulnerable members of our community are often highly targeted for these crimes.

"The impact on the victims is not just financial, it is also distressing and has a long-term emotional affect and mental health impact on people's wellbeing as well."

Katy Bourne, the Sussex police and crime commissioner, said her elders' commission of 65-85-year-olds told her the risk of being conned left elderly people more terrified of picking up their home phone than of antisocial behaviour in the streets.

An average of £20,000 was being taken from each scam victim across Sussex, she said. "These criminals are experts in what they are doing. It's big business to them.

"The more people are taking about it, the more people are educated about it - the better it is."

Sussex Police's Operation Signature anti-fraud work, has dealt with 4,000-plus reports in some three years. Bernadette Lawrie, who plays a leading part in the work, said two-thirds were committed over the phone and some one in six by email.

PPI claims, doorstep callers, computer cons, courier fraud and fake tax officials were the most common methods of fraud.

The popular funding fair is being held by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester to allow local and national funders to find out what grants are available.

The event takes place on October 11 at the Bognor Regis campus of the University of Chichester.

Nina Ghibaldan, VAAC's funding advisor, said: "We have organised this event so local charities, voluntary and community groups get the opportunity to meet funders and support organisations on their own doorsteps.

"It's a chance to ask questions an maximise the potential to get your great idea funded."

There will also be a briefing on crowdfunding by Anne Strachan, of Crowdfund UK, followed by a practical workshop on how to run a successful campaign.

The event is free for all VAAC members and £25 for nonmembers and organisations who work outside Arun and Chichester.

Wedding belles show off history of church VAL LEWIS returned to Pagham's parish church with her wedding dress more than half a century after she wore it for the first time.

Mrs Lewis was among the brides who took part in St Thomas a'Becket Church's exhibition about weddings.

The event had a special significance for her because it took place on the 56th anniversary of her wedding to Brian.

She said: "This is the first time I have had the dress out for 56 years. I packed it in a pillowcase."

The sight of the satin brocade A-line classic outfit brought back plenty of memories to Mr and Mrs Lewis, of Havelock Road, Bognor Regis, of their big day.

"It was a beautiful sunny day and my father, who was the village policeman in Pagham, walked me down the aisle.

"My mother made my dress, so it was extra special," said Mrs Lewis, 76. "She did all the bridesmaids' outfits and everything like that as well."

Mr Lewis, 78, said: "We think we were the first couple to have our reception at the King's Beach Hotel. Our wedding was at 2pm. We had a roast dinner and the reception ended at 6pm, when we drove off on our honeymoon to Torquay."

Some 30 dresses were on display at the event last Saturday to attract hundreds of visitors keen to gain a unique glimpse into weddings from the past.

The oldest dress on show was worn by Ann Penfold when she married Henry

Toogood on May 24, 1872.

One of the more recent dresses - a shaped dress with an overlay of lace and a tied back - was worn by Dawn SpurwayPearson, 59, when she married Nick Pearson, 63, on December 27, 2014.

The couple, of Gloster Drive, were among those who wore their wedding outfits at the celebration to the delight of people looking around.

Mr Pearson said: "We have both been married before, this was the first time we had been married in church - and it made it really special.

"I was not sure about getting married at that time of year but it was the best Christmas ever."

Mrs Spurway-Pearson said: "It was an amazing day. We had someone playing the violin, I serenaded Nick into the church and my nephew played the Trumpet Voluntary.

"The church was beautiful because it was already full of flowers from Christmas."

Adding to the interest of the day were photocopies of the church's marriage registers going back to the 18th century and the actual registers from the mid-19th century.

David Chitty, 79, of Hook Lane, Pagham, who was married in the church in 1972 found the wedding of his great-greatgrandfather, Charles Chitty, to Harriet Sparkes on April 12, 1831.

He said: "I have seen the details of the wedding because I have been going to the archives in Chichester.

"But this is the first time I have seen the actual register and it is really fascinating."

It is hoped the day's popularity will have raised thousands of pounds for the church's Raising the Roof Appeal.

The Rev Mark Eminson, the current vicar, was one of three at the event.

He said: "There has been such a joyful atmosphere.

"It has been a real celebration of weddings and the church which has served the community for hundreds of years and, hopefully, will continue to do that for many years to come."

He conducts about six weddings a year compared to the 20-30 at the church some 40 years ago.

"It is a privilege to be at the crucial crossroads for two lives," he said.

Runners get wet JUNIOR parkrunners in Bognor Regis defied the weather to take part in a special event.

The turnout of 25 was still seen as a success by organisers as heavy rain dampened their hopes of a bumper attendance of four-14-yearolds for their first back to school special.

Among the intrepid young people who went along for the 2km walk or run was a wide range of experience. Five made their parkrun debuts, while Ollie Baynes was on his 68th run.

Isla Gauson had designed a special T-shirt for her 50th event on Sunday but had to cover it up with a coat to protect her from the torrential rain. She will receive a milestone wristband to mark the occasion.

One of the organisers, Daniel Hughes, said: "Not only was it our back to school event, it was also an end of an era as the run director, Karen Vilday, was taking charge for the last

time. Karen was instrumental in setting up the event and planning began in April, 2016."

The first run, at the Arena Sports Centre, took place in January, 2017. The numbers have reached 151 backed by a band of helpers.

Gardeners win award for work VOLUNTARY gardeners have struck gold with their work in a Bognor Regis town centre site.

The efforts of the Bognor Community Gardeners have been recognised with a gold award in this year's RHS south east in bloom awards.

They were also rated outstanding in the RHS's category for community work as well as securing an RHS certificate of distinction. Both the ratings in the latter two categories were the highest possible.

The judges said: "This originally small group is not only thriving but is extending its influence with (Arun District) Council and with the residents of Bognor Regis."

The judges commended the planting of the gardens, between the Hothamton car park and West Street, and the stance the group had taken with littering and dog fouling. The Sunken Gardens are under threat from Arun's linear park regeneration scheme, which will replace them and the car park.

Bognor Community Gardeners' head gardener Kim Davis said: "We are thrilled with the results and the judges' comments.

"We are so proud of how far the Hothamton Sunken Gardens have come in the seven years we've been caring for them."

A bid has been made by a councillor to legally protect the gardens with town green status.

` Cable-laying starts CABLE-LAYING is about to begin to bring high-speed internet connections to public buildings in Chichester and Bognor Regis.

The West Sussex Gigabit project will see the buildings get the fastest and most reliable broadband connectivity.

This will make the public services provided by the council more resilient and less at risk of disruption.

The work has started in some roads and footpaths in Chichester and Crawley this week. Seven other towns and parishes will soon follow. They will include Bognor Regis.

The exact roads are being finalised. A county council spokesman said: "The work will typically involve digging a trench in the road or footpath and installing ducting for the fibre-optic cables."

Most of the work should be carried out from 9am-5pm. Some evening and night-time work will be required in nonresidential areas.

The scheme is supported by funding from the government and the network will be built by CityFibre.

` Fire station open day FIRE crews in Bognor Regis are inviting people to meet them next month.

The town's firefighters will be holding their annual open day on October 6.

The free event from 10am-4pm at the West Meads Drive fire station will give the public the chance of a behind the scenes look at the work of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Demonstrations, competitions, fire and road safety advice and displays will be available on the day to provide something of interest for all the family.

Zoe cooks up a charity fun day CAKE-BAKING for cancer is the aim of a special event in Bognor Regis this weekend.

Friends Zoe Pniewski and Sandra Louisa have organised a great stand up to cancer bake-off coffee morning for Sunday.

They are holding the fundraiser for Cancer Research UK from 10am to 1pm at Art & Music, 85 Essex Road, Bognor Regis.

Zoe said:" The event is open to all ages to come along and try out the following - best cake competition, so why not bring a cake along?, raffle and guess the weight of the cake."

As well as the cookery events, Sandra will be hosting an art exhibition.

She is a locally-based artist with a

wealth of experience.

She studied art history through the Open University and creative arts at Buckingham New University and offers a variety of classes at her art studio in Essex Road.

Any work which is sold on the day will have 20 per cent of its profits donated to Cancer Research UK thanks to Sandra.

This is the second event that Zoe, of My Special Event, has organised to raise money for the charity and in memory of her late uncle, Michael Ball, who died unexpectedly of pancreatic cancer last Christmas.

Earlier this month, she helped to organise a retro video gaming event and hopes fundraisers will follow.

JUNIOR firefighters have celebrated their success on the latest FireBreak course in Bognor Regis.

They took part in a pass out parade at the town's fire station. Family members, friends and instructors watched them take part.

The pupils of St Anthony's School in Chichester completed a week of training, which included hose running, ladder climbs and wearing breathing apparatus.

They have also learned about fire safety, cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and gained a HeartStart first aid training

qualification.

Chief fire officer Gavin Watts, of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, presented the graduates with their awards.

He said: "These young students have pulled out all the stops this week to complete their training and they should be proud of their achievements.

"It is always good to see our young graduates learn about the challenges firefighters face.

"I hope they go away with some positive memories and valuable skills such as

discipline, teamwork and improving self-confidencee."

Cllr Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "It is lovely to see what a positive impact the FireBreak programme can have on a young person's life and I applaud their fantastic efforts this week."

A council spokesman said the scheme was launched in East and West Sussex in early 2014.

“It has been developed to encourage any catering establishment to offer healthier menu options. In addition, they need to adopt healthier cooking practices, such as grilling instead of frying, and use healthier ingredients, substituting high fat products for their lower fat alternatives,” he said.

“To obtain a gold award, key members of staff will be required to undertake some form of accredited/recognised training in nutrition. “This means you will be able to visit the award-winning restaurants, pubs and cafes and find healthier meal options on the menus for you and your family.”

Preparing for colds and flu this winter LUCKILY for us all here in the UK, the days have still been really warm. In fact, as I am writing this, I am sat in my garden wearing shorts and a t-shirt catching some mid-day rays, which, I must say, is very pleasant for the end of September.

However, the mornings and evenings are a little nippy, and we even contemplated turning the heating on the other night, but I

resisted! I want the feeling of summer to last as long as possible. However, as we approach the change of season you can start hearing the coughing and sniffing of the dreaded ‘change in temperature’ colds.

Of course, it also has to do with massive amounts of people all coming together at once, such as school children and university students. If your children have just ventured

The same goes for all of us actually, it's now, at this time of year, that we need to prepare ourselves properly by eating the best foods possible to boost our immune systems in order to stay well throughout the autumn months.

The first thing you can start with is chilli, because it's loaded with power punching beneficial ingredients that offer immunity support. Tomatoes are also high up there due to being high in lycopene, which is an anti oxidant that helps fight disease. Garlic is a must-have when it comes to fighting bacterial, viral and fungal infections, as are onions, turmeric, ginger, coriander, spinach, kale, broccoli and winter squash. Not to mention in season apples, pears and berries such as cranberries.

There is also something very inviting about a hot bowl of soup on a cold autumn evening. The best thing to do is to make your own soups and stews with fresh, in season ingredients. Making your own bone broth is a wonderful way of getting extra B vitamins, and minerals such as magnesium and zinc. If you load your soup with colourful veggies too, such as leafy greens, carrots, sweet potatoes, beetroot, parsnips and winter squash, you will be enhancing your

protection hugely.

Hot soup also help to keep the body hydrated, which helps with delivering electrolyte minerals throughout the body. It also helps keep nasal mucus thin and clear, which protects us from inhaling viruses and bacteria, therefore protecting us from harmful viruses and germs.

Extra herbs can be added for antiinflammatory purposes, as well as anti viral and anti bacteria, such as rosemary, thyme, oregano and cinnamon. The good news is that it is OK to use some dried herbs in your soups and stews with success. The best spices that seem to retain their goodness and anti oxidants during the drying process are cilantro, basil, dill, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, oregano and parsley. So use them liberally.

With so many apples on the trees ready for the picking (if you haven’t done already) use them to your advantage. Apples are high in soluble fibre, which helps reduce inflammation, as well have having healthy benefits for diabetes, gallstones, high cholesterol, IBS, haemorrhoids, liver and weight management and if you add some cinnamon to a baked apple, you could help lower blood sugar levels, reduce heart disease risk, and ease digestive comfort as well a give your immune system a welcome boost this time of year.

The best way to eat and stay healthy is always cooking from scratch, using fresh produce whenever possible, staying away from processed foods. Add a truck-load of healing herbs and spices to everything you eat and voilà… you have a health enhancing dish.

POMPEY chimes beckoned this weekend as I wended my way to the Portsmouth Guildhall to see Nick Mason of Pink Floyd fame and his Saucerful of Secrets featuring Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp ably assuming the Syd Barrett role .

The previous day I happened to venture into M&S Chichester and noted that, while stocks last, several wines are still on offer with a third off their usual price - an offer too good to resist!

A 2017 Clare Valley Riesling first caught my eye being on offer for a tantalising £8.66 and a grape variety that has been grown for over 150 years in this part of South Australia.

This one is crisp and fruity Australian Riesling with some green apple and lemon flavours, but a preponderance of lime flavours almost all - pervasive, but with slightly tart acidity, nonetheless decidedly refreshing and one well worth trying!

For an outlay of £10, a Cuvée Ressac 2017 Picpoul de Pinet, a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc from Florensac in the Languedoc where cool sea breezes temper the hot sun of southern France to create a great balance of flavour, turned out to be vibrant and fruity and a good tipple .

Scaling the dizzy heights at £16.66, a 2015 Chablis Premier Cru Vaucoupin from the reputed Famille Brocard did not remotely disappoint with green apple to the fore and well balanced acidity.

Vintage Champagne next in the form of a 2012 Champagne De Saint Gall for a reduced price of circa £23.

Praline, quince and honeydew melon notes accompany bracing acidity and this creamy number has very fine bubbles, delicate yeasty notes on the nose and hints of brioche - altogether rather splendid à ce prix .

Turning my attention to reds, three in particular stood out for varying reasons.

I was initially intrigued by a Zorzal Malbec XV Eggo of Argentinian provenance.

This Uco Valley Malbec is a purer, lighter, fresher style of wine and is called Eggo after the cement egg used for the fermentation and, having seen no oak, exudes red and black fruits with floral notes.

Soft and fruity, full-bodied with a silky palate and nice balance - a wine that justifies its £10.66 price tag!

Secondly, an Albert Bichot 2012 Monthélie seemed a no-brainer, given his reputation, and this lesser known Burgundian number is ready to drink now at a good price of £14.66.

Round, velvety and smooth with dark berries and soft cherry fruit, this good wine has a long, dry finish and merits your consideration!

My final selection was a tad indulgent, but ultimately , as I had expected , most rewarding and was a 2012 Château Franc - Maillet Pomerol made up of 90 per cent Merlot and ten per cent Cabernet Franc and aged for 16 to 18

months in oak.

Deep ruby in colour with thick legs, this gem has soft tannins, well balanced medium - high acidity, plummy dark fruits and cassis flavours with coffee and tobacco undertones. Rich and smooth, this slightly oaky wine with a

retro taste of chocolate has a long finish with a lingering taste, a hint of vanilla and spice and develops quickly in the glass, but needs an hour aeration to open up - on offer at £24.66, this is one to snap up for Christmas - A bientôt, mes amis!

Community News & Views MEMBERS of West Sussex Youth Cabinet, some are pictured below, shared a platform with senior county councillors and MPs to debate lowering the voting age to 16.

A lively discussion ensued in the council chambers of County Hall, Chichester, with passionate and well-informed speeches put forward on both sides.

Votes at 16 is one of two key campaigns for the youth cabinet, which is made up of 11-18 year olds who were elected by their peers to represent all young people in West Sussex. During an hour-long debate, arguments for included the fact that 16-yearolds can vote in Scotland and Wales but not in England and the frustration of being denied a voice in the EU referendum.

Those arguing against questioned if 16-year-olds had enough life experience and said 18 was the correct cut-off point.

A number of senior county councillors said they had been swayed in favour on the strength of the arguments.

Speaking in favour of the motion, Cllr Paul Marshall, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We should be promoting good governance of our country and we can only do this by encouraging young people to participate in the important issues that shape our services.”

Gillian Keegan, MP for Chichester, and Sir Peter Bottomley, MP for Worthing West, attended and joined in.

A vote was then taken, with a resounding victory in favour of the motion to give 16 and 17-year-olds the vote - 24 for, eight against and three abstentions.

Caroline Nicholls, the High Sherriff for West Sussex, told the young contributors 15,000 people had elected them and their challenge was to ‘go out and make a difference now’.

From here, the youth cabinet will propose a formal motion for their senior counterparts to debate at a full council meeting later this year.

CHICHESTER and Bognor Green Party has taken part in a nationwide call on the government to launch nationwide annual car free days to mark the global event that takes places in other countries every September.

Paris held its third city-wide car free day on September 16, 2018, and Brussels has been holding car free days for years. Both capitals are calling on the rest of Europe to do the same.

The Green Party has also called on the Government to increase spending on walking and cycling to £30 per person per year, from the current spend of £6.50.

The Green Party marked car free day on Saturday with a series of events across the country, including Chichester, where campaigners were out gathering signatures on their petition calling for improved air quality in the city. The Green Party wants to show the benefits of moving towards a transport system that prioritises walking and cycling, reclaiming cities for people and tackling air pollution at the same time.

Green Cllr Sarah Sharp, from Chichester City Council, said: “As part of our campaign calling for better air quality in our city, we have found that many residents are fed up with the pollution around our roads and schools and want the council to introduce more ways to deal with this. We are highlighting the need to reshape our transport system and design cities for people, not just for cars.”

The local petition calls on Chichester District Council to encourage Stagecoach to introduce cleaner buses, calls on big employers in the city to do more to promote bus use and car sharing. It also urges the take up of anti-idling zones which have been seen to work elsewhere in the country.

Cllr Sharp added: “When we spoke to residents on the doorstep, people were very concerned about the speed of tractors travelling through the city and were really pleased to sign our petition."

YOUNG footballers would become better players if coaches spent more time training them to scan the field and less on focusing on the ball.

New research by sports experts at the universities of Chichester, Portsmouth, and Limerick suggests reading the game should be taught to players from a young age, in tandem with ball skills, rather than as an advanced ability.

The study, published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise, found that players who incorporated scanning into their play were likely to improve their awareness, decision-making, and the quality and/or speed of their technical actions.

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were highlighted as players who incorporated the technique into their gameplay, but little research has explored how such behaviour is taught.

Lead author Craig Pulling, from the University of Chichester, said: “Coaches

THE RNLI has been confirmed as the official charity of this year's The Running Festival at Goodwood. The event will take place on October 14.

The RNLI is the largest charity that saves lives at sea, with its main aim to educate, influence, supervise and rescue those at risk from drowning.

It provides a valuable service to the many busy stations along the south coast. The charity, pictured below by Nathan Williams, will be using their time at The Running Festival at Goodwood to launch their annual Reindeer Runs - festive family runs that take place each winter.

The Running Festival at Goodwood provides sporting fun for runners of all ages and abilities, with the family mile kicking things off at 9am, the 10K race following at 10am and the half marathon at midday.

Race director Joe Williams said: "We are thrilled to announce the RNLI as one of our official charities for The Running Festival at Goodwood this October.

"The charity is dedicated to saving lives at sea at busy stations along the south coast, relying on volunteers and supporters who work tirelessly to keep us safe.

West Sussex County Council is bringing in the ban and will also require householders in the county who drive commercialtype vehicles to obtain a free permit from the same day.

The permit will apply to anyone who uses a van, pick-up or single axle trailer at any of the sites around West Sussex.

The system is designed to cut congestion, eliminate illegal disposal of commercial waste and discourage people from outside of the county bringing in large loads of material.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, county council cabinet member for environment, said: "We've had a good response to the scheme with over 8,000 permits issued so far. But we want to make sure as many people as possible are aware of the scheme before it is fully implemented on October 1.

"The process is simple and only takes a few minutes. Once you have the permit, you are free to visit the sites as before.

"If you have family or friends with a commercial type vehicle or trailer, I woud urge you to mention the scheme to them."

Some vehicles will be banned as well from all the sites from Monday. These include multi-axle trailers, horse boxes, tipper trucks and flatbed or dropside trucks.

West Sussex residents can apply for a permit at: westsussex. gov.uk/permitscheme The scheme does not cover waste generated by a business or household waste that has been collected by a trader for a charge.

Town's arcade has reflected changing times Range of businesses has varied from Toyland to The Sweet Jar WHEN the subject of shopping arcades is raised, we tend to think of the large shopping complexes of today, on the outskirts of towns.

We have, of course, our very own shopping arcade in the High Street, and it is difficult to imagine this area of the town without it.

Arcades were first developed by the Parisians in the 1800s and eventually came to London in 1817. This style of shopping was to move the retail trade from market stalls into more sophisticated surroundings, as a national trend developed, with increases in wealth and shopping requirements.

These shopping arcades were increasingly adopted as an essential feature of many high streets, and, therefore, it was not unexpected that in 1901 William Tate, a local builder, was to become involved in the building of such a development in the town.

It was built in the grounds of York House, which was situated on the corner of York Road, where today we have The T Bone restaurant. When the arcade was constructed, builders incorporated the Regency house into the east side of the Arcade.

This new building was obviously to change the aspect of the High Street, especially when we understand that it was to pass

through a private garden, and eventually through to the seafront with the final building by William Tate being the Kursaal.

By 1910, local guide books were to describe the Arcade as a 'very tasteful and useful structure lined with high class shops'.

The Arcade was to remain in the Tate family until the 1960s when it was sold to a property investment company. Recently, it has been purchased by Arun District Council.

Within 12 months, a bank was built on the remaining area of York House and grounds.

The General Post Office was to occupy part of the western side of the Arcade, once occupied by the Blueprint Business Centre.

It is now a 4Sight Vision Support charity shop and here the Post Office remained until it moved to new premises in 1926, in the High Street, until latterly when it moved into WH Smith in the London Road precinct.

The local press in 1903 were advising Bognor residents that the Arcade was 'assuming a thoroughly business like appearance for the season, with the majority of shops being occupied'.

There was a commissioner on duty at the entrance to the Arcade, resplendent in his gold braided uniform - and he was to be seen holding open the doors of carriages for the gentry. Around this time he was also to

be seen over Christmas as Father Christmas and was remembered for the bran tub that was at the entrance of the Arcade, for the children.

Queen Mary, who was resident at Craigweil with King George V in 1929, visited numerous shops in the town, including the Arcade, where she purchased a number of articles for a doll's house from Toyland.

This particular shop was opened in 1902 and was operated by Miss Margaret Hunt and her sister. It remained open until 1977 and it finally closed because of changing trends and an increasing number of larger toy outlets providing a larger range of goods.

In 1930, on November 5, there was a serious fire which apparently started in the British Legion Club on the upper floor.

This was to cause extensive damage with 14 shops and all the offices being completely destroyed. This resulted in restoration being carried out, costing in the region of £25,000.

In 1985, a national publication became available providing a history of arcades from 1817 to 1939 in which the Bognor Regis Arcade was described as of 'Edwardian seaside architecture, of single-storey structure with glass gable ends'.

The High street entrance was noted as being 'between corner turrets of twin three storey blocks, built of brick and timber with tiled spires and finials'.

Looking at the occupants of the Arcade shops over the years, numerous well-known

names are mentioned, including a Mr AE Reynolds, who was a gentlemen’s hatter, tailor and hosiery. The lease for this shop had been with his branch of the Reynolds family from its opening in 1902 until 1969.

Another interesting shop was owned from 1902 to 1939 by Mrs S. Piper, who was the local agent for Goss china.

She also had another shop in the High Street, and advertised that it 'sold an assortment of shapes and models', this referred to the various designs of china that were available.

How many town residents, visitors and crested china collectors have pieces of crested china, which have a notation on the base “Made for S. Piper Bognor? One such piece that I have is a commemorative cup and plate especially made, depicting Craigweil House.

As the years progress there have been a variety of owners within the Arcade mainly to reflect the various times and styles of the relevant period.

We seem currently to have emerged from a period of change and empty shops into the modern Vapour Evolution and an increased number of food environments than before.

We have the arrival of the Turkish Restaurant, Foodelicious, Rainbow, The Sweet Jar, Howards and Warrens Bakery near the High Street. entrance to make today's Arcade more of a food destination than ever before.

Event Marshal – Children on the Edge Children on the Edge exists to help marginalised and forgotten children, who are living on the edge of their societies. These are children without parental care, neglected or persecuted by their governments, ignored by international media and missed by large overseas agencies. The Children on the Edge Chichester Half Marathon is an annual event run by a local charity for local people. They are looking for game makers to help marshal the event on Sunday 7th October. They need people who are willing to come out on a Sunday morning and help ensure a safe and enjoyable event for up to 1000 runners. No experience is required - just a willingness to help make a difference. Full instructions will be given before the event. The event will go ahead in almost any weather! And there is a lot of standing around. Hot tea and coffee will be available at the end of every shift in the Race Village.

Referral Order Panel Member – West Sussex Youth Offending Service West Sussex Youth Offending Service (YOS) works with children, young people, families, victims, communities and partner agencies to reduce and prevent youth crime. The main role purpose is to facilitate a restorative meeting with the young person post-sentencing, accompanied by their parents/ carers, to talk about what happened and the impact of their actions on the victim/s or community. Tasks include: familiarising with case background pre-panel; engaging and facilitating a conversation with the young person, parent/carers and victim (if present) in order to create a tailor-made and individual contract aimed at repairing some of the harm caused; discussing and recommending programmes which can help reduce

the likelihood of re-offending; reviewing the young person’s progress; and evaluating and considering cases of non-compliance.

Theatre Charity Shop Volunteer – The Regis Centre The Regis Centre provides professional and commercial entertainment in the theatre to the people of Bognor Regis, as well as facilities for local people to engage in the performing arts. Volunteers are required to carry out various tasks within the Centre. They are looking for volunteers to help in their new charity shop.

The shop is open 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday; morning or afternoon shifts are available, but they are also happy to hear from people that can only offer 2 hours on any one day.

Honorary Treasurer – Tandem Tandem is a Midhurst-based charity that provides transport to medical appointments and social outings and activities for the elderly and disabled in the area. Virtually all Tandem activities are provided by volunteers. The Honorary Treasurer manages expenditure/receipts and reserve funds. Operational costs include the running of three vehicles and three part-time staff. Income is derived from donations, membership fees and fares charged for Tandem activities. The Honorary Treasurer will attend regular committee meetings held every two months to present regular financial updates and will present an annual financial report to the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Derby day at Chi given additional PostSport spice by table trouble for rivals CHICHESTER’S derby battle with Hampshire rivals Havant this weekend takes on added significance as both sides still search for their first win of the season.

Oaklands Park is certain to be jumping as the third-from-bottom hosts look to kickstart their season and put some distance from their second-from-bottom visitors.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Havant, but, with the Hampshire club’s new pitch still being laid, home advantage is handed to Chichester.

They will be seeking to rediscover the form that saw them claim 16 wins last time out, including ten of 13 at home.

The pair run the risk of being cut adrift of the bottom with fellow winless wonders Hove unless they can get back to winning ways soon.

A patched-up Chichester, forced into ten changes from the week before and blooding several colt youngsters in the face of an injury crisis, started well against Camberley last Saturday and had an eight-point cushion mid-way through the first half.

But, Camberley’s bruising pack were better placed to take advantage of the monsoon

weather, heading into half-time on the back of 14 unanswered points.

Chichester chipped away at their visitors' lead and were within a penalty of parity before late scores saw Camberley stroll away to an 18–33 win after Chi were reduced to 14 men after a infringement at the underpressure scrum.

Havant were similarly left to rue what might have been having also drawn close to their opponents Dartfordians before succumbing to a 30-21 defeat.

Bognor also face Hampshire opposition at home on Saturday as they look to build on a gutsy display which saw them battle out a low-scoring affair in the rain at home to Alresford at the weekend.

Youngster Sean Power, on his last appearance for the club before moving to Loughborough University, kicked over two penalties to add to a try by inside centre David Sweeney after he burst through the midfield.

The last of Power's penalties made the score 11-5 to Bognor and the home side held on in the face of unrelenting pressure from the visitors for a hard-earned win.

DARTS: September sees the end of summer and the end of summer darts in the Bognor Summer Darts League.

But not before a little fun with the traditional Blind Trebles knockout ahead of the annual trophy presentation at the Newtown Social Club in Greencourt Drive, Bognor Regis.

Sixty-six players took to the oche in the knockout tournament before being whittled down until a first semi-final which saw Emma Bist and Rachel Hall of Aldingbourne Mavericks team up with Chi Snooker Club’s Daniel Robinson to take on Buster Barton of Claremont, Tony Phillips of Hunston Hares and Mark H Todd of BRSA Ravens.

The latter team took the victory and strode into the final where they would meet Andy Cooper of Claremont, Adam Hall of Aldingbourne Mavericks and Legends’ Gary Blackwood who overcame the heavy scoring of Rob Collins of Friary 'Z' and his partners Lee Hellyer, of Newtown Amity, and Aldwick Legion’s Larry Chant.

THE LOST BOYS overcame their geographical flaws to take the glory in the Rewell Wood Running Festival on Saturday.

Held over a 6.5 mile course at the Arundel Cricket Club, Duncan Stephenson-Gill, Trev Strowger, Byron Kearns and Jack Penfold were first home despite Kearns following a misleading sign to run an extra 1.2 miles and Stephenson-Gill losing his way on his leg.

Team-mate Strowger recovered from a fall to help his team to victory, having trailed by as much as five minutes at one point and 40 seconds at the start of the final lap.

Even another wrong turn by Penfold on the home leg, leading him up the garden path of a neighbouring home, failed to stop the team romping home clear of any competition in three hours 34 minutes.

Doing it for the Girls pushed them hard but even opening leg runner Juliet Stallard was led astray from the course in pursuit of Byron

and also ran an extra mile.

Anna Kari-Enes took the baton on for the second leg and pulled back some time before handing over to Jess Thomson. Thomson closed the gap to first place even further to just a couple of minutes and Kari Mack stormed the final leg to claw back and overtake the runner in second place in a time of 3:37 Too Old, Too Young - featuring Grahame Hurren, Daryl Fairbrother, Mike Manwill and Stan Mack - crossed the line in a time of 3:45, well ahead of The Muppets of Gary Pidgeon - Karen Vilday, Donna Strowger and Sarah Santer, who finished in 4:21 and Helena Wilmers, Vicky Cooper, Deb Jane and Nicola Kettley, of Deb’s Dashers, in 4:53.

Hats off also to Paul Coe who ran the Chiltern Wonderland 50 across countryside with a 5,600ft elevation to complete his 96th marathon in a personal best for the extended discipline of 10 hours 30 minutes.

The final’s first leg descended into a double shootout with first Blackwood missing a ton plus out-shot before Cooper missed his double.

But Barton couldn’t close on a double double, missing tens and fives after hitting double top with the first dart.

The pressure mounted as Hall and Todd missed their chances before Blackwood stooped to conquer.

Strong scoring to open the second leg soon had the two trios back among the doubles with Barton of the Claremont/ Hunston Hares/BRSA Ravens trio the first to miss his chance of glory before Cooper erred in the double bed too, leaving Todd to swoop in with double 13 on his first dart to take the game to a decider.

To cap the end of the season, Friary Z collected their clean sweep of victories in Division One, taking home the overall, singles, pairs and trebles trophies supplied by Aford Awards.

It was a case of similar dominance in Division Three where QE2 Devils took home the quadruple, while the honours were more even in Division Two, with Aldwick Legion taking home the overall and singles silverware. Aldingbourne Mavericks celebrated becoming trebles champions while Royal Oak and the Lambs shared the honours in the pairs.

CRICKET: History returns to Priory Park this weekend when Sussex play the Duke of Richmond’s XI in a T20 challenge.

The Duke’s team will be captained by his eldest son, Charlie March, and includes representation from nearly all forms of adult cricket.

The match on Saturday at 1.30pm – to be played in whites and with a red ball - is part of celebrations to mark the centenary of the 7th Duke of Richmond’s gift of Priory Park to the people of Chichester.

Pagham's pride preserves pristine start to new season

PAGHAM’S battling qualities were on show as they twice battled back on Tuesday night to preserve their unbeaten start.

Newhaven drew first blood in both halves at The Trafalgar Ground.

But goals on the stroke of half-time by Callum Overton and Johan Van Driel with eight minutes to go ensured The Lions extended their unbeaten start to the league season to eight games.

The result saw The Lions stay in the slipstream of the promotion places in fifth place and within five points of early pacesetters Horsham YMCA who lost a fivegoal midweek thriller to Saltdean United.

On Saturday, it was more a case of Pagham getting their work done early as goals by Overton and George Gaskin within 11 minutes put them in charge at home to Shoreham.

The visitors pulled one back but Pagham were able to hold on.

They will be confident of extending their unbeaten run into October when they travel on Saturday to mid-table Uckfield Town, who were also in action in midweek, losing to three goals in eight first-half minutes from Crawley Down.

FREE-SCORING Chichester City suffered their first league defeat of the season at promotion rivals Saltdean, which saw them also lose pole position.

Having won six of their first seven games at a rate of more than three goals a game, the Lilywhites’ fans had their first taste of reality on Saturday and the first indication Chichester won’t have it all their own way in the Premier Division this season.

Saltdean got off to a dream start. Jamie Brotherton capitalised on sloppy defensive play in the Chichester defence when an under-hit backpass was seized upon by Saltdean’s front two, giving the Tigers the lead against the side with the best defensive record in the league with barely two minutes on the

clock.

Both sides, befitting their status as the league’s hotshots, created numerous chances and sub Curt Gayler clinched the win on 67 minutes with a smart finish when clean through following more dithering possession at the back from the visitors.

The Lilywhites, managed by Miles Rutherford, will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host mid-table birthday boys Lingfield, celebrating their 125th year in 2018, at Oaklands Park.

Horrible history repeats itself for Rocks in replay heartbreak Next Game

ROCKS’ staff could not hide their 'bitter disappointment' after throwing away two chances to progress in the FA Cup against lower league opponents.

After dominating both matches, the Rocks eventually succumbed to an extra-time second round qualifier replay defeat on Tuesday night against Bostik North AFC Sudbury.

The club missed the chance to add to their proud FA Cup record, having reached the second round on four occasions, and a potentially lucrative first round tie which could have been secured with two more qualifying wins.

It was all a horrible case of déjà vu for Bognor, who were dumped out of the FA Trophy in 2014/15 at Sudbury after a replay.

It had started so well for the Rocks in the first game last Saturday at Nyewood Lane when Harvey Whyte calmly slotted his team in front after three minutes.

But the Rocks could not hold onto the lead and eight minutes later the tie was level after keeper Dan Lincoln struggled with a high cross.

For all Bognor’s dominance of the ball after that, they could not find a winner, with captain Whyte speaking after the game of how he and his team-mates failed to produce enough quality with the final ball.

Having dominated the first game,

confidence was high that the Rocks could rectify the situation in the replay.

But that was without reckoning on Bognor’s worst 45 minutes of the season which saw them trailing at the break.

A rejuvenated Rocks took back control with goals early in the second-half from Jimmy Muitt and Whyte putting them on the cusp of the next round.

A third goal their second half dominance deserved never materialised and the slender one-goal lead could not survive a precise 88th minute free-kick from Sudbury’s Joe Whight.

The hosts sensed their moment and the winner came five minutes into extra-time to dash the cup dreams of Rocks' players for another season and leaving them facing a miserable ride back to Sussex.

Coach Robbie Blake told the club’s YouTube channel he was bitterly disappointed that the Rocks had failed to capitalise on such a great opportunity.

He said: “We were so poor in the first half.

They wanted it more.

“We gave them a bit of a rocket at half-time to say the least and we’ve done everything to get it back to 2-1, and it could have been six or seven.

"Then they’ve been in our half once or twice, they get a free kick on the edge of the box and deliver a sucker blow.”

Rocks told to stick to their guns THE ROCKS need to stick to their footballing principles - that is the message coming out from Bognor’s coaches in the wake of the club’s first big setback of the season.

Tuesday night’s initial defeat has taken some of the gloss off the club’s strong return to the Bostik Premier. They will have a chance to get AFC Sudbury out of their system and maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign at Potters Bar Town tomorrow.

Their hosts are also in need of a pick-me-up having not won in five games after an opening two wins while the Rocks will be looking for their first three points on the road having drawn all four on their travels so far.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s game, coach Robbie Blake said: “When we get a little bit uncomfortable, I’ve been saying to the lads, this is when we need to still keep playing our football and stick to the principles of how me and Jack want to play with composure on the ball.”

Speaking to the Post ahead of Tuesday’s defeat, manager Jack Pearce said: “We’ve got to be happy with start to the season but football has a nasty habit of coming and biting you in the backside. We have to keep going and ensure that the players are on top of it."

PLAYING twice in the FA Cup in a week has been great though, of course, we are all bitterly disappointed we didn’t get the result we wanted on Tuesday night.

It is by far the most special tournament you can be involved in as a non-league football player because there is always a chance if you do well you could play against a top team. I remember when Havant played Liverpool at Anfield which shows it can happen for clubs at our level and, of course, there is the added bonus of the financial benefit for the club.

I would be lying if I said it didn’t bring added pressure, not just in the FA Cup but any cup tournament. In the league you can play badly one game but then pick up five wins after - but if you lose in the cup you are out.

The FA Cup is the biggest cup you can play in but even then it shouldn’t affect your performance as a player too much. In the first tie on Saturday we did all right.

We started off well but then gave away a sloppy goal but, apart from them hitting the bar, we dominated the entire game and got in really good areas but the ball in was not the best quality, myself included.

It was difficult when we got to the byline and they had eight or nine men in the box but that’s when you need that extra quality.

I don’t think they set out to be defensive, they came with an open attitude but after 20 minutes we literally took over the whole game.

No disrespect to them but we had more quality passing and movement and I think once they realised that we were controlling the game, they stopped pressing and dropped back and defended well and they earned their reply.

For us it was frustration, especially when you’re in nonleague because it meant we had to go to Sudbury on Tuesday night, got home about 2am and

then I have to get up for work at six.

So going to Sudbury for the reply was the last thing we wanted and losing just meant it was a wasted journey.

I don’t think having cup games at this stage of the season affects the momentum. We had it with the FA Trophy where if you are doing really well and winning cup games, it all adds to the winning mentality.

As long as you have the right mindset playing Saturday, Tuesday should be fine. It’s only when it becomes Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday that it might become a problem.

We have been tough to beat away from home in the league but it’s not because we have gone out to be cautious. We tend to play every game to win it but if we are up against it then the bare minimum is not to get beat. We do realise we are going to lose games at some point, and if and when we lose, it’s about how we react.

On Saturday we’ve got Potters Bar Town, a team I’ve never played against. I spoke to [exRocks striker] Ollie Pearce and he said the pitch is not the best but we will treat it like any other game. If we can’t get a victory, then the bare minimum is a draw although we do need to start turning draws into victories.

By Thursday, ahead of the weekend match, we will get a bit of info about the pitch and the ground, like whether the pitch is good or whether there’s a slope, whether there’s any particular players we need to know about or whether they play in a certain way.

Then, on Saturday, once you get the team sheet, you can get a bit more specific about players, whether they have a tendency to do a certain thing, whether they play right foot or left foot, and a team’s strengths and weaknesses.

It’s good to be prepared but it shouldn’t really matter. On our day, we should beat anyone in this league.
