THeir Royal Highnesses made their first visit to the town on Wednesday to officially open the extraordinary £35m tech park on its university campus.

Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Stephen Reynolds wants to ensure they return soon to return the town to the spotlight.

He told the Post: "Hopefully, they will

be able to come back again. I will be issuing a formal invitation to them.

"I am working with the choir at the University of Chichester for my civic service next February and it would be nice to see the royal couple then."

Cllr Reynolds was among the seven dignitaries who greeted the Duke and Duchess when they arrived at the university's centre for science and creative industries.

He said: "I said to the Duke it was lovely for him to come and visit Bognor Regis and that he came here as a child.

"But he said he couldn't remember.

"THis is a fantastic occasion for Bognor Regis and it's good to get the town noticed. THis university development is important for the town."

HUNDREDS of supporters turned out to back a Bognor Regis centre's first shop.

THe large turnout for the fundraising venture from My Sisters' House women's centre enabled it to take the first step towards bigger premises.

THe pop-up shop initiative on Saturday saw £945 raised for the community interest company.

My Sisters' House founder Julie Budge said: "THe day has been absolutely amazing. We have had a lot of community support. THere has been a constant stream of people coming in.

"I would say we've have 200 people in the first two hours. One of our tables of goods is already half full. It's very exciting and well worth the effort.

"We've had really good feedback as well.

People have asked us if we will be doing the same thing again.

"I would like to open the shop once a quarter if possible because of the success of today."

THe one-day shop took place in an empty shop in the High Street thanks to its owner, the Reynolds family.

THe 1,000sq ft premises were full with hundreds of items of clothing, toys and other donated items. Most were priced as low as 50p each. Some designer clothes were for sale at higher prices.

THe offer of the shop enabled My Sisters' House to forget its original idea of a marquee in the town centre and enable more items to be sold and an easier procedure to set it up and take away any unsold items.

"It's an absolute asset having this shop.

It's so much easier than a marquee and is in a good central location," said Julie.

She set up My Sisters' House in June, 2015. Its services to help women who have suffered domestic abuse and to boost the confidence of others has seen it help to improve the lives of 580 clients.

Some 20-30 newcomers arrive each month at its current main premises in London Road and the centre's volunteers support some 180 women at any time.

THeir ages can range from seven to 80.

THe demand means more space is urgently required. THe London Road building is 300sq ft and another building used is the centre is the same size.

"We really want 2,000sq ft of space," Julie said. "THat will cost us about £15,000 a year. I want to keep it in Bognor Regis but it's hard to find that type of space in the town."

THe value of the temporary shop had also been in promoting the centre's work.

Julie said: "It's not just about making money. It's about telling people what we do and enabling them to seek our help they need it."

One of the ten volunteers on the day was Kerry Healy. She went to the centre nine months ago as a result of domestic abuse.

She said: "THe centre has really built up my confidence and I want to give back and help other women who are in the same position."

THe premises will be used as a site office for flat conversion works above next year and refurbished for letting afterwards.

Prizes on offer for enormous pumpkins grown around town GIANT pumpkins are being sought to make halloween in Bognor Regis especially scary.

THe town's in bloom volunteers are looking for young gardeners to nurture the heaviest of the vegetables they can.

Entries can be grown for five categories. THey are children under 11 years of age, individual, business, group and school.

An in bloom spokesman said: "All you have to do is grow your own giant pumpkin and bring it along to the Rox halloween extravaganza in Hotham Park on November 3 to be weighed.

"THe in bloom stand will be near to the Hotham Park Lodge entrance.

"THere will be a prize for the heaviest pumpkin in each category and an opportunity for children to decorate their pumpkins."

Entry forms are available from Bognor Regis Town Council by calling into its offices on the first floor of the town hall in Clarence Road.

THey can also be obtained by phone on 01243 867744 or on the town council's website - bognorregis.gov.uk - under 'your town'.

Completed entry forms should be returned to the council by October 19.

Levy plan for big sites questioned

Michele is summit special after climb DOMICILIARY care assistant Michele Simms has returned to Aldwick after she reached the peak of her fundraising efforts.

Michele completed a charity trek to the summit of Mottarone, a mountain located in the Western Alps of northwest Italy.

She made the demanding 11-hour climb to its 1,492m summit for the national charity, Group B Strep Support.

Michele was delighted to have received £1,832.82 of backing. All of this will go towards helping the charity continue its vital work saving lives and supporting families across the UK. She said: "Our family suffered the most devastating tragedy imaginable the sudden loss of my grand-daughter, Mia Lucy, at just three months and 17

days.

"We found out it was late onset GBS, something we had never heard of.

"Still to this day, people don't know, or understand, what this devastating disease is.

"I decided to raise awareness by walking. It was challenging but it was also therapeutic in helping to heal.

I couldn't have done it without the support of my family, and partner, Chris.

"Hopefully, raising more awareness can inform pregnant women and new mothers what the NHS should be doing instead of the charity."

Group B Strep - also known as GBS or Strep B - is a common bacterium unknowingly carried by about 20-30 per cent of adults.

It is only very rarely dangerous to

adults, but is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, causing sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. It is also the most common cause of meningitis in newborn babies.

Jane Plume, chief executive of Group B Strep Support, said: "We are so grateful for Michele's support and would like to say thank you to everyone involved.

"We rely on fundraising. So events like this will help us continue raising awareness and providing vital support for families affected by Group B Strep."

by Group B Strep, educates health professionals and the public about the condition, and supports research into a better understanding of Group B Strep infection.

UNHAPPY councillors have deferred plans to exempt owners of large housebuilding sites around Bognor Regis from a levy for community projects.

THe Arun District Council members agreed to reject a recommendation to move towards consulting about the issue until they had further details.

THe rare move came at the council's community infrastructure levy subcommittee. THe levy is imposed on landowners of many development locations and is used to fund schemes which benefit the areas in which the land is located.

But the sub-committee last THursday was asked to back a table of charges which would have meant a zero charge on the Pagham North, Pagham South and west of Bersted (Chalcraft Lane) strategic sites destined to be used for well over 3,500 homes.

Cllr Daniel Purchese (LD, Beach) said: “I have a huge problem with a zero rate on the strategic sites. I'm not convinced by the explanations.

“THe figures don't stack up for me. I would like more explanations and a comparision with other local authorities. I don't want to delay things but I can't support these agenda items.”

Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston), the sub-committee's chairman, said: “We have not had a community infrastructure levy briefing for councillors lately. I know the rules have changed since the last time we discussed this. It is possibly a good idea to have a briefing of some nature.

“I want to ensure, as I am sure all members do, that we maximise any infrastructure support from developments that come forward.

“It is a balancing act but we have got to be able to afford the improvements that we think are necessary for the strategic sites.”

Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham), who is in charge of the council's planning services, said: "I think a briefing is going to be useful for everyone's sake.

It should be held sooner rather than later."

has to be spent on providing new infrastructure such as transport, education and health services.

THe sub-committee's meeting was the first since June, 2015, because Arun's housing plans were delayed by the time it took to have a local plan land use blueprint approved by a government inspector.

Council principal planning officer Nicki Faulkner told councillors the hold-up had seen the details of the levy changed by the government to rule out comparisions with the amounts proposed three years ago.

“Compared to 2015, the proposals on affordable housing have changed,” she said. "Now, any site of 11 or more homes has to provide 30 per cent or more of affordable housing and that has an impact on the land value.”

THe levy was imposed on the landowner when the site was sold to a developer. If the levy was set too high, the owner would refuse to sell and affect the council's ability to hit its house-building target of some 1,000 properties a year for 20 years.

Consultants for the council had set a nominal land value of £350,000 a hectare for a greenfield site with the potential for development. Other costs were added to the purchase price and subtracted from the likely selling price to see if a scheme was viable with the levy imposed.

THose in Pagham, Bersted and Barnham were only marginally viable without a levy, the consultants had said.

Cllr Andy Cooper (C, Angmering) said: “THese are some of the biggest developments going to be taking place in our district. THey are going to have a cumulative impact on infrastructure.

“THis is a major decision. If we get it wrong, we are stuck with it for a long time.”

Different levy rates have been put forward for the consultants for various sites and for different types of development. Another category which could be zero-rated, and was queried by councillors, was retirement flats.

Funding will need to be paid by developers for specific improvements to roads under other planning rules.

` Visit brings Duke back to the town JUST over two miles separated the Duke of Sussex on his visit to Bognor Regis from one of his rumoured childhood holiday spots.

THe Duke’s tour of the town’s campus of the University of Chichester was the first known time he had returned since he was said to have enjoyed holidays with his grandfather and step-grandmother on the Craigweil estate in Aldwick.

During the marriage of Raine, Countess Spencer, and Johnny Spencer, the couple bought Tradewinds and an adjoining property, Hacienda, where they were said entertain the then Princes William and Harry when they were toddlers.

THe Countess was said to have enjoyed building sandcastles with the princes on the nearby beach and treating them to ice-creams.

Earl Spencer later sold the houses but Raine, Countess Spencer, bought a double-fronted Victorian house in the Bognor Regis area in 2013 – three years before her death in October, 2016, aged 87.

Of course, the town’s most famous royal visit occurred in 1929.

King George V spent 13 weeks in the first half of the year on the Craigweil estate recuperating from septicaemia and lung problems, helped by the sea air.

THe worldwide attention gained by his visit led councillors of the town to request the ‘Regis’ suffix for the name of Bognor.

THe King granted the request and it was formally received on July 26, 1929 - to make the town the last to be given the title.

Keen Duke given animation lesson SPIDERMAN has met a royal couple in Bognor Regis.

One of the cartoon character’s main animators hosted an active workshop with students during an historic visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

THe royal couple spent 50 minutes at the University of Chichester’s campus in the town to provide a potentially worldwide focus on its £35m tech park.

THey saw innovations in engineering as well as design and creative digital technologies as part of their first joint official visit to West Sussex.

THese included the workshop by Max Tyrie with students on the university’s 3D animation and visual effects degree.

As well as the Amazing Spiderman franchise, Mr Tyrie worked on the first and second Kingsman films in Hollywood before he joined the university as its head of 3D animation and visual effects. He has also clinched two Bafta awards for Walking with Dinosaurs.

He said: “It was fantastic and very enjoyable. Harry is a big fan of animation.

It is something he is enthusiastic about.

“He was interested in how we start to teach animation because it is a very complicated subject matter.”

Mr Tyrie said the experience of the royal visit was similiar to the premiere of the big budget productions he had worked on for Hollywood studio Sony Pictures among others.

“You often don’t see the actors when you are working as an animator. THey take less of an interest than you might think. Today was like a premiere with the sense of excitement when you were waiting for the

stars to arrive. It was reminiscent of that.”

THe visit occurred on only the students' second day of their 3D animation and special effects degree. Littlehampton resident Sean Lack, 18, said: “THe royal couple were pretty down to earth. THey seemed interested in what we were doing.

“We were bouncing a ball up and down and they seemed to enjoy it. THe facilities are really good. We have huge monitors and excellent computers, much better than the one I have at home.”

Steph Kidson, 19, of Southampton, said: “THey were very easy to talk to. You can relate to what they are saying. THere was a lot of interest from them and definitely from Meghan. She knew an awful lot about it.”

Some 60 students and staff gathered in front of the tech park for the relatively low-key visit on a sunny day on which the Duchess wore a moss green leather pencil skirt from Hugo Boss and a green silk shirt from & Other Stores.

As reported exclusively in the Post last month, the tech park contains groundbreaking technology.

It took just three years to turn the idea of a development which puts Bognor Regis on a national and international educational stage into reality.

In time, some 1,500 students will study in the tech park to almost double the number at the campus and provide a multi-million boost annually to the town as well as the chance for its young people to get valued skills. THe development was funded by the university, £8m from the Coast to Capital local enterprise partnership and £2.7m from the Office for Students.

Louise demonstrates skills for university's royal guests FORMER Regis School pupil and mechanical engineering degree student Louise Grainger showed her knowledge to the royal couple.

She conducted an experiment using one of only two tensile testing machines in Europe to demonstrate how a plastic material reacted under extreme pressure.

“I couldn’t believe that I went to school in Bognor Regis, live in Chichester now and I’m with the Duke and Duchess.

“But I realised they were really down to earth people and I thought ‘I can do this’.

It is not as daunting as I thought. THey are just like everyone else.”

Louise, 20, hopes to follow her course with a career in Formula One or Formula E motor racing, possibly with the Red Bull team.

“I’m really happy to have this tech park on my doorstep,” she said.

“To get on a mechanical engineering course, you usually have to travel quite far and to have this here is amazing. I can’t believe how good the facilities are.”

Also showing the royal couple the engineering facilities was James GordonCockerell, 19, from Woking. He was working on 3D design programme during the tour.

“THe royal couple were really nice, though I was a bit nervous about meeting them.

THey were much calmer than I thought they would be,” he said. "But I didn’t have a pair of trousers to wear! My mum had to drop them off last night."

Professor Stuart Harmer, the university's head of engineering, was a relieved person

after the visit.

“You only get one shot at the experiment.

We had set it up and tested it a few times but you still don’t know how it’s going to go on the day. Louise Grainger was unbelievable but this is only students’ second day and I’ve told them not to expect an event like this every couple of days,” he said.

Professor Harmer said he hoped the royal visit would put the spotlight on engineering. “I hope this boosts the profile of the subject.

"We need to get more interest in engineering. THe problem we have in the UK is a misunderstanding about it.

“We are very lucky as a new department to have such an amazing opportunity as today,” he said.

Jonathan Sharrock, chief executive of Coast to Capital local enterprise partnership, said the tech park had a regional importance.

“We invested £8m in this building and did that for three reasons: one – it is based on the science subjects which we desperately need in this country; two – the courses are linked to industries and the students will have the skills they need for high quality jobs; and three – it will help to regenerate Bognor Regis and take the town forward.

“THis visit has put us on the map. We need to go to government and tell them of the need to continue to invest in Sussex.

“THere is no better way of doing that than with a royal visit like this.

“We have 87 projects across the region and this is the most high profile occasion at any of them.”

` Public left out Sir, It was fantastic to hear last week we were having a royal visit to our town of Bognor Regis from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Yet it’s sad the people of Bognor Regis at the 11th hour had no idea of what time and where we might humbly stand to hopefully catch a glimpse of the royal party when they visited the technology park in Bognor Regis. As usual, the timings of a royal visit were shrouded in mystery for the general public, presumably for ‘security reasons’.

Yet, obviously, those within county council, the High Sherriff office, University of Chichester and the media have been privy to information and timings for months in advance to prepare and have had the opportunity to share that information with family and friends.

It would have been really considerate to have shared with the genuine townsfolk who live and work in Bognor Regis, the details and times of the royal visit, so everyone had the chance to share in this special occasion.

Instead, we read about the leader of the county council who ‘can’t wait’ for their visit and how ‘exciting for the whole town’ it is from MP Nick Gibb.

We have been asked by HM's Lord-Lieutenant for West Sussex, Susan Pyper, to 'join me in giving them both the warmest of West Sussex welcomes as they arrive in our county for the first time'.

Very disappointed, but not surprised, that as usual the people of Bognor Regis were excluded.

Kyle Ellis, 22, of Chichester, said: “He used a robot-sized camera which you can pan and tilt using a joystick. I gave it to Prince Harry and he used it.

“He asked questions about how to control it and other things. Meghan said it took her back to her life before she met Prince Harry and had a go as well.”

Edenbridge resident Charlotte Morris, 20, said: “I had that moment of being starstruck and it’s nice to know they are down to earth.

“THey made you feel they were one of us and

that made their visit more enjoyable.”

For Estonian citizen Elen Liigus, 21, who used a steadicam during the visit, the visit provided a talking point with her relatives in the east European country.

“THey are celebrities so I had heard of them and my family know about them and there is a lot of interest in them,” she said.

Prof Baysted said the three MA courses in the department were based around collaborative working in the creative industries.

THis was in line with the practices the students would find after they finished their courses.

Bar's licence is suspended A HIGH STREET bar in the town centre has had its licence suspended for the second time after failing to comply with its licensing conditions.

TAO, sited at the previous McDonald's premises, is owned by Daniel Slade, of Sladesbars Ltd. THe bar, which opened in December last year, had its first inspection on January, 31, 2018, and identified 15 breaches of the conditions.

At an Arun District Council licensing sub-committee on Friday, officers heard evidence of some of the original conditions still not being met.

Mr Daniel Slade told the sub-committee he had put in arrangements to hire a new manager, Mr Luke Noble, to take over running of the bar and ensure conditions would be met.

Mr Slade's legal representative, Mr James Rankin, said Mr Slade had been suffering from depression and the after-effects of losing his close friend, Danny Johnston, saying: "Mr Slade has put his hands up and finally admitted defeat and he has done a brave thing and handed the reins over to Mr Noble. THe game had just finished and everyone was getting a bit over excited and I didn't know how to defuse it without ruining the atmosphere. I'll be honest, I was thinking business, I didn't want everyone to just leave."

Cllr Andy Cooper, who chaired the sub-committee, said: "In summary, the decision today will be the licence to be suspended for a period of five days.

"THis will facilitate a new management regime to establish the extent of the outstanding conditions and obligations in order to enable the management to move the business forward. THe current designated policy supervisor, Mr Daniel Slade, be replaced.

"Mr Slade, I hope that you understand where you are today. We want you to grab this with both hands and move your business forward. If Mr Noble is the right person, get him on board and move quickly to establish the bar where it should be."

Town's MP sees first aid display YOUNG first aiders from Bognor Regis showed their life-saving skills to the town's MP. THe 10 to 17-year-old St John Ambulance cadets were visited by Nick Gibb at one of their weekly meetings.

THe cadets ran a training session about how to help someone who was choking.

THis also allowed Mr Gibb, the Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, the chance to practise his techniques on a mannequin, called 'Choking Charlie'.

Mr Gibb thanked cadets for volunteering to help others.

He said: "THe work you, as St John Ambulance cadets do, to provide medical assistance at events in Bognor Regis is hugely appreciated by all of us.

In his role as the government's minister for school standards, Mr Gibb announced proposals in July for every schoolchild to have the chance to learn first aid as part of their health education.

THe proposals will come into force in 2020 if they are approved by parliament.

New licences are required for houses in multiple occupation PROPERTY landlords around Bognor Regis have been warned that laws for houses in multiple occupation have changed.

Compulsory licensing rules, which took effect on Monday, mean any privately rented properties occupied by at least five people in two or more households - and who share basic amenities - must be licensed by Arun District Council.

THis is regardless of the number of storeys of the property, which was previously relevant.

It is an offence to operate such a property without a licence or fail to

comply with conditions like minimum sleeping room sizes and waste disposal requirements.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said: "THe council continues its commitment to ensure standards within the private rented sector are improved. I urge landlords to take action immediately to ensure they have the required licence."

Existing licences remain valid until they expire. THe new conditions will only apply when they are renewed.

` Prom toilets arrive NEW TOILETS have finally been placed on Bognor Regis seafront.

THe much-delayed loos were lifted on to the prom on Tuesday morning.

Work on the site should start next Monday to create a smooth surface around the toilets. THe promenade opposite Walton Avenue will be closed temporarily.

Services also need to be connected to the four unisex cubicles.

Arun District Council expects the loos to open next Friday.

Its cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: "It will be great for our beach visitors to have these high quality new toilets on the promenade.

"It was really important to us that the building design was aspirational and befitting this beautiful location."

THe toilets were delayed after residents objected to the cubicle doors opening opposite their flats and the makers then put back delivery from the school holiday.

Santa's helpers to prepare his sleigh AUTUMN'S arrival has seen Santa's helpers in Bognor Hotham Rotary Club start to get his float ready for his annual tour around the town.

Members and volunteers will be helping Father Christmas and his brightly lit Christmas sleigh take to the streets and the larger stores during December.

Festive music and lollies for children who go along will add to the excitement.

Club press officer Brian Clarke said: "Our Christmas float demonstrates, and receives, an enormous amount of goodwill.

"Everyone enjoys these colourful outings and the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham wish to thank the public for their support, which enables the club to offer aid and financial help to those in serious need in the local community."

THe illuminated float has been a regular sight on the roads around Bognor Regis for many Christmases.

It is a popular feature of the town's festive season and raised £11,574.28 for Rotarians. After minimal expenses, they donated the money to good causes around the town.

THe routes and venues for this year will start from 4.30pm-7.30pm on December 2 in the Downview area of Felpham.

THe next tour will be around the roads of Rose Green from 5.45pm-8pm the following day.

Other areas to benefit from the sleigh's presence in the first week will include Aldwick east, Flansham Park in Felpham and the Roundle estate in Felpham.

THe tour will continue until Christmas Eve when the float will be at Jordans in Rose Green from 9am-1pm.

Students link with theatre PERFORMING students at Felpham Community College had the unique chance to enjoy a workshop with a professional theatre.

THe 30 Year 7 pupils were chosen to take part in the Schools Fest organised by Chichester Festival THeatre.

THe community college is the only secondary school to have been chosen for the initiative.

It will see the students taking part in four workshops. Two of them are linked to this winter's productions at the theatre.

After the workshops have finished at the college, students will watch the shows they have been researching and developing. THese will be The Midnight

Gang and Sleeping Beauty.

Nicola Coney, the college's curriculum leader for drama, said: "THe Year 7s involved with this project have been a fantastic start. Considering so far they have had only one full session together, we have been really impressed with the quality of the work they have produced and their focus."

Two students taking part in the project are Tabissa Hope and Will Wreford.

Tabissa said: "THe first workshop was really good. We had to create our own script and then perform it to the rest of the group."

Will said "It will be good to go to the theatre. Most of us have not been before."

Close the borders, close the doors I am dismayed at THeresa May’s announcement that she would be effectively closing the borders to EU workers.

In 2017 I participated in a TV programme titled British Workers Wanted for Channel 4, which concentrated on Brexit and its implications on employment for my recruitment agency, Opus Loco.

In the programme you see that it was a real struggle for us to find British workers for our positions.

We were not recruiting for skilled labour, we were looking for kitchen porters, hospitality staff, trainee landscapers and warehouse workers. THe prerequisite being that you wanted to work, other than that, we would teach you all the skills. We struggled to get the numbers required and if you watched the programme you would have seen the excuses Brits gave us as to why they couldn't work these jobs. We did get one British candidate, James, who rather than being the norm was the exception.

I was one of the many that voted Leave. In hindsight, do I believe I made the right decision?

Probably not. Do I feel I was misinformed? Most definitely. Was I aware of the long term implications for my business? Most definitely not.

Since the programme aired, recruiting for these roles amongst Brits and EU nationals hasn't got any easier - in fact the situation has grown gravely worse. We've scoured the whole of the south from Bristol to Bognor Regis and I presently have over 30 full time vacancies that I need to fill, with little to no hope of doing so. I run job adverts, advertise in the press and even write an article every week for

the local rag to generate interest, but it has proved fruitless. I’m genuinely worried for the future and my business.

I can understand all the people who voted Brexit citing that they want our country back under our control. We all have our own reasons for voting to Remain or Leave and to go into every reason would take too long.

I hate to be the person to say this but, Mrs May you’ve never run a company and you are not running our country. THis decision will be detrimental to businesses who pay taxes that pay for our hospitals, schools etc. Close the borders and be prepared for businesses to close too.

Raising a cuppa and tucking into cakes raises cash for Macmillan

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE across the community enjoyed coffee and cake as part of the annual fundraiser in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

THe popular Macmillan Coffee Morning returned this year and people across the area took part.

John Barber-Bacon is the owner of Sussex Barista in Barnham. He organised a coffee morning for the first time.

He said: "My dad died of cancer two years ago. Macmillan were very supportive when my dad was ill.

"Having a coffee morning when I own a coffee shop makes sense.

"It's important to raise money for Macmillan. I have been swept off my feet - I've been busier than ever."

Darryl Wulff is operations manager at Chichester Gymnastics Olympics Club.

THe firm works with several different companies, so Darryl decided to spread the event over a whole week in a bid to boost the fundraising.

He said: "We've never done it before.

We've got 500 people that we see weekly and of course their parents, too. It's a nice thing to do. As an organisation, we like to get involved in stuff."

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Morey has organised a Macmillan coffee morning at her home in Selsey and in the community every year since 2013.

THis year, she opened her home up once again with a cake sale, a raffle, tombola and a stall selling handmade items. Prizes were donated from local people and businesses in the area. She raised £752.63.

She said: "My father died of cancer and I have lost other friends and relatives and people I know. My aunt was also a great believer in Macmillan so we took over from what she used to do.

"It has grown over the years. We get people coming in from outside Selsey as well. We have lots of fun on the day. It's become quite a community event."

About 12 Hotham Park Heritage Trust members each baked a cake for their event last THursday.

Business for the chocolate cake, walnut and coffee cake, meringues and scones was brisk at the park's lodge in Bognor Regis last THursday.

A total of £314.35 was raised compared to £306 last year. Trust chairman Rosemary Warren said: "We have lost several members to cancer and we feel that, because of our age range, this is a suitable fundraising event to stage."

In Middleton, Alex Johns raised £939.68 in her usual event - with stalls as well as cakes - at the sports club last Wednesday.

She said: "It's a very good response for an event which last two hours. I've been helping Macmillan for a long time and the cakes were made by people who live in the area."

Daryl Bowen organised a coffee morning at the Assembly Rooms in North Street, Chichester.

As well as a cake sale, there was live music provided by student group Clarinet Roulette and violinist David Ide and a stall selling vintage goods.

He said: "We had people bringing in donations of cakes.

"Lots of people I speak to don't know that this is up here. We wanted to do something for the community. We've got these amazing assembly rooms which have been designed for this purpose."

Pallant House Gallery also held an event again this year with a cake sale taking place inside the gallery.

Organiser Alison Davies, a Pallant House Gallery volunteer, said: "Pallant House Gallery has hosted a Macmillan coffee morning for eight years, supported by the gallery’s sponsor, De’Longhi, which kindly supplies free coffee.

"THis year’s theme was the suffrage centenary, following the gallery’s summer exhibition on Virginia Woolf featuring 80 female artists.

"Run by volunteers, the event is always an important diary date, with staff and volunteers contributing delicious cakes and raffle prizes."

` Counselling group FREE support to all individuals who have lost a loved one is available in a coffee and cake group in Bognor Regis.

THe monthly get-togethers are organised by Southern Co-op's Bereavement Centre. THey offer the chance for people to meet others in the same situation in an informal and friendly setting.

THe sessions are held from 10am to 11.30am on the fourth Friday monthly at the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street, Bognor Regis.

Ingrid McAllister-Derry, Southern Co-op's bereavement centre manager and counsellor, said: "Bereavement can be a very lonely journey, even if you have people all around you.

"THe group is deliberately informal. It brings people together who are in a similar situation and who understand what you may also be going through."

Gardeners pledge to carry on VOLUNTEER gardeners have vowed to continue their award-winning work to improve Bognor Regis town centre.

THe Bognor Community Gardeners struck gold with the Royal Horticultural Society’s south east in bloom contest for their efforts in the Sunken Garden, as reported.

THe garden is set to be replaced by landowner Arun District Council with its linear park scheme, which includes flats and a shop and a potential new health centre. But the gardeners’ founder, Kim Davis, said the group would carry on with its frequent tasks to ensure the garden stayed looking good.

“It’s business as usual for us here because the regeneration is all up in the air about what is going to happen to this place. It definitely needs a makeover because it has got a bit tired looking but there is no need to spend £4m.

“I’m pleased that Arun are going to set up some focus groups about this site and we are hoping to be invited on to one of them. Having done this work since 2011, we know these gardens quite well and I believe we have got some valuable ideas we could give.”

She said the group believed the gardens, between the Hothamton car park and West Street, could have a bright future as a community hub.

“It would be good to have some log cabins installed for community groups to occupy. THat would change the dynamics of the people who come here.

“It’s unfortunate but this park does have a certain reputation. THe behaviour has actually improved but the reputation hasn’t," she said.

“But some log cabins for activities like furniture restoration and a café would

attract people back here,” she said. “I don’t think a sterile linear park will do that.”

THe efforts of some 30 community gardeners, who help out in the Sunken Garden for a varying number of hours a week, helped to win the gold award.

THey also gained an outstanding rating in the RHS’s category for community work and secured an RHS certificate of distinction.

“It’s good to get the recognition,” said Kim. “We knew we had done well but we were delighted to get gold and the distinction.”

THe work which saw them rated so highly includes planting, weeding and watering. Among the species planted are geraniums, apple trees and fruit bushes.

A herb border with varieties like garlic, chives, sage and oregano has also been created.

One of the group’s members, Bob Jackson, helps out for a day a week on average with any bricklaying and carpentry needed.

He said: “THis site is fantastic when you think about it. It’s great. Kids can play in here safely. THere is no danger to them.

“I can’t understand why the council wants to get rid of it – but a water supply is essential.”

THe gardeners have also been helped

by Doug Parrish, of Dizzy Lizzy’s garden equipment repair company.

He spent some £400 on a mobility scooter and adaptions needed to create a trailer which can transport up to 60 litres of water. Before, it had to be carried in batches of 10-15 litres.

THe gardeners have branched out to look after other sites. THey include the Regis Centre and the planters outside Morrisons and the nearby footpath.

Man charged with grooming A MAN from Bosham has gone to prison after admitting attempts to groom young girls to engage in sexual activity online.

Tony Small, 37, a smallholder, of Main Road, Bosham, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, having pleaded guilty on August 31 to ten offences - three were offences of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a girl aged 13 to 15, two were offences of attempting to cause a girl aged 13 to 15 to watch a sexual act, and five were offences of attempting to cause a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

THe charges relate to three separate people, none of whom come from Sussex.

He will be a registered sex offender for ten years and was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to last for ten years, severely restricting his access to children and computers.

Small was arrested on THursday, July 26, as a result of information passed to Sussex Police by members of the public.

Detective Constable Gaye Moore, of Sussex Police, said: "Small thought he was talking to teenage girls, to whom he sent indecent videos of himself, but in fact he was in touch with three adults who had set up false profiles online.

THey contacted officers who went to the address and arrested him.

"We rely upon the assistance of the public in preventing and detecting crime. Working with the community is a vital factor in our gaining information.

` Owner identified POLICE have identified the owner of a dog which attacked a child in Aldwick last summer.

THe woman, who does not live in Sussex, has been spoken to by Devon and Cornwall Police and made to sign a dog control order.

THis means she may face further action for failing to remove dog faeces, not keeping a dog on a lead and not putting and keeping a dog on a lead when told to by an authorised officer. She also faces further restrictions in owning a dog.

THe three-year-old boy was bitten on the chest on August 6 in Kings Parade, outside Marine Park Gardens. He has fully recovered.

SIX ARTISTS will be playing their original music in Bognor Regis this weekend.

THe performers will be performing their own material on Sunday to bring the spirit of Brighton's electic music scene to the town.

THe free event, called A Tribute to Ourselves, will start at 3.30pm at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road.

It will begin with an acoustic set from young local artist Scarlet Cooper and end with THe Speak, from Brighton.

THe concept has come from Bognor Regis musician Jeremy Hayward, who has long experience of live music around

the world through his involvement with THe Cure.

He said: "Bognor has always been very stagnant and difficult if you are trying to play original music.

"THe owner of the upcoming music venue, THe Hothampton Arms, Danny Barret, has been very positive and supportive of this idea."

Artists playing at the event will be Scarlet Cooper, David Farnan, Luke Elder, Ruby and THe Acoustic Stone with Mike Fry on guitar, THe Boy Wonders and THe Speak, with original member of THe Cure, Matthieu Hartley.

` Primary schools FAMILIES around Bognor Regis and Chichester can apply for places for children due to start school next September.

Children born between September 1, 2014, and August 31, 2015, will then be eligible to go to primary or infant school. Parents of children in Year 2 at infant school should also apply for a place at junior school.

Hall's well as village building reaches 20 HUNDREDS of happy users a week ensured Pagham Village Hall entered its third decade as a thriving hub.

THe building's main hall is booked with a packed weekly schedule and the small hall is also well used.

THe variety of groups which meet there include short mat bowls, yoga, line dancing and badminton.

A pre-school is open every weekday morning and two afternoons to ensure a wide range of ages enjoy the Pagham Road hall's facilities.

Philip Coleman, chairman of its trustees, said: "It's a very attractive hall. It's light and airy, has good car parking facilities and a children's play area next to it."

THe night before the hall's 20th anniversary saw a packed turnout enjoy the latest event to be held by the Pagham Mulberries. THe music night featured THe Minkees with a selection of popular songs which had everyone dancing.

It was the latest of a series of different music nights held by the Mulberries each year to raise money for local charities.

Two cheques were presented as a result of the previous concerts. One for £250 was given to the Dementia Support hub at Sage House in Tangmere for its facilities and social groups for people with dementia. THe other cheque for £1,000 will go towards the hall's running costs.

THis is in keeping with the original aim of THe Mulberries to support the expenses of the hall. Its members have since expanded their fundraising to include other groups.

THe hall was opened on September 16, 1998, by Pagham's legendary Le Mans racing driver, Derek Bell. But its history dates back to 1951.

A trust was set up by residents to raise funds for a village hall in Pagham. Sue Bailey, pictured right middle, with Mr Coleman, left, and fellow trustee Ray Radmall, is the last remaining member of the original trust still involved.

Progress slowly continued and a formal referendum in 1989 of all Pagham electors voted in favour of a community building.

With renewed impetus, a Pagham Village Hall Fund charity was set up that year and took over the £5,000 raised by the trust.

By 1997, it had boosted the fund to just over £40,000 with events such as wellythrowing, dances, coffee mornings and a buy a brick initiative.

Pagham Parish Council had taken on the project, led by its late chairman Cllr Jacqui Miles, and raised money from council tax payers and the Public Works Loan Board, since repaid, to build the hall at a final cost of £400,000.

A foundation stone was laid by two local schoolchildren in April, 1998 as the hall with capacity for 150 people seated at tables and 200 theatre-style began to take shape. THe council set up the current 12-strong Pagham Village Hall Trust to maintain and manage the building.

THe trustees consist of four members of the hall users, three parish councillros and five Pagham residents.

Mr Coleman and Cllr Radmall are

the two trustees still serving from that time.

More than 40 regular groups use the hall as well as bookings for events like wedding receptions and children's parties.

THe trustees have carried out many improvements.

THeir first major project was to replace a potholed car park surface with Tarmac.

In 2014, the hall was extended with a 50-seater small hall and toilets for the pre-school. THe facilities are completed by a 20-capacity committee room.

Mr Coleman said the trustees had given the profit from the bookings to the parish council to repay the latest loan for the small hall.

"THis helps to reduce the burden on council taxpayers," he said.

One of the hall's regular users is line dance instructor Shirley Spurling, with three groups with a total of 46 dancers.

She said: "It's possibly the best hall around. It's got a lovely floor. It's bright and welcoming and everything is in the place it should be."

Students reach out to Africa CHILDREN in Kenya are finding learning easier thanks to students and staff at Chichester College.

A team of 30 volunteers from the college spent two weeks of their summer holiday helping to improve a school in Nakuru they raised £80,000 to build with the African Adventures Foundation.

THey created a library filled with bright and inspiring pictures and messages, started work on building a new kitchen, renovated more classrooms - and spent time teaching and working with the pupils.

THe visit to the Walk Centre Primary School was the first since it opened in August last year. It was an emotional experience for Lisa Humphries, director of student services and pastoral support at the college.

She has led the fundraising and was on her

eighth visit to the area.

"It was amazing to return to the centre, a year after we attended the opening," she said.

"To see it in action, so many young children benefiting from the school and accessing the education they, like all children, should be able to have. It was very emotional. We've worked so hard and there's still so much to do."

As well as the time spent at the school, the team from Chichester were taught Swahili and learned more about life in Kenya. THis included a visit to the Hilton slum area, where many of the school's children live.

Lisa added: "THat was a particularly tough day for our volunteers. Many of the children live in and around the rubbish dump in the Hilton slums. To experience their reality is hard, but it drives home why we do what we do to support the Walk Centre."

` Community funds TIME is running out for community groups in the Post area to upload their ideas for crowdfunded projects in the latest round of county council funding.

THousands of pounds is being made available to worthwhile projects through THe West Sussex Crowd.

THe crowdfunding platform gives the public, businesses and West Sussex County Council the chance to pledge money to groups in need of funds.

Project creators have until next Monday to upload their ideas and begin fundraising to qualify for the next round of county council community initiative funding. Among those to have benefited from the initiative is the Regis School of Music in Bognor Regis.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "I would encourage more groups to take full advantages of this opportunity by uploading their ideas to THe Crowd and start fundraising by October 8 to make sure they are eligible for our funding."

FIRE crews in Chichester and Bognor Regis are urgently appealing for more car donations to help them train.

Father sees script by son filmed for comedy f Bet Chapman, left, receives her award

Society members beat the weather JUDGE Suzanne Holroyd has praised flower lovers in Bognor Regis for their hard-working efforts.

Ms Holroyd was pleased with the good display by members of the town's horticultural society in their annual autumn show in spite of the difficult growing season caused by the season's weather.

She was especially amazed at the number of entries in the fuschia section.

THe show attracted 44 entries at Bersted Jubilee Hall in North Bersted last week.

PROUD father Colin Crouch watched some of his scriptwriter son's work being put into action in Aldwick this week.

Aldwick resident Mr Crouch joined the set of the BBC comedy, Don't Forget The Driver, on the parish's coast on Wednesday as the cast and crew continued their work around Bognor Regis for the next few days.

THe six-part series, destined for BBC2, was written jointly by Tim Crouch, one of four children of Mr Crouch, and who all attended Bognor Regis Community College.

THis was fewer than last year but still enough to give Ms Holroyd a difficult decision choosing the winners.

She selected the best in show winner as David Donovan, for his display of runner beans.

THe best pot plant award was won

by Pat Alderton and the best dahlia award was claimed by Bet Chapman.

THe society's next meeting takes place at 7.30pm on October 25 at the hall, off Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted. Melissa Hauffe will be giving a talk on sweet peas. New members are always welcome.

Mr Crouch said: "It's lovely to have Tim's work being filmed here. It really is about Bognor Regis.

As reported, filming began in the town last Monday and has featured locations near the pier, around the bandstand and in Station Road.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the series on TV," said Mr Crouch. "Toby Jones is a lovely actor.

"His character in it has a touch of the character he played in The Detectorists, which has very much built a cult following, and I think Don't Forget The Driver will be delightful."

Tim Crouch's plays have won awards and toured around the UK and internationally to acclaim.

New look Opus Loco is just the job, says Sarah When Sarah Duke saw her recruitment agency Opus Loco trending on social media giant Twitter she knew a hit TV show featuring the business had made a huge impact.

Now Sarah is confident that once again the company can be in the spotlight thanks to a classy office refurbishment along with a new, fresh approach boosted by a rebrand.

Sarah, along with colleagues Oksana Simconok and Gaynor Heath, were filmed for a fly-onthe-wall Channel 4 documentary called British Workers Wanted, which revealed young people were more interested in being YouTube stars than working.

And the show proved so popular that a review in the Daily Telegraph noted: "Sarah and Gaynor were immensely likable, terrifically funny characters – chain-smoking and hard-working but also not afraid to dish out a bloody good rollicking to anyone who crossed them. It was impossible not to enjoy their company. They would be an excellent addition to Gogglebox."

Fast forward to today and Sarah has overseen the finishing touches to the new-look Opus Loco, which has been helped hugely by joining forces with London agency CRS Group.

Sarah, who was stopped by viewers for selfies after the show was screened, explains: "We enjoyed making the programme and it helped put us and Bognor Regis on the map. Sleep easy with home remedies and habits I CANNOT stress enough how important sleep is for your health. I have many clients who come to my clinics with a variety of different ailments, and so many times when you dig deep and look into the root cause of what’s going on…the answer is not enough sleep!

Without the correct amount of sleep, your hormones cannot regulate, your immune system becomes weak, and your brain cannot think clearly. It increases your risk of certain types of cancers, and your chances of developing coronary heart disease and/or having a stroke are increased.

You libido can suffer, your fertility decreases, you can gain weight easier, your risk of diabetes increases; you can become more accident-prone and you age quicker. THere is nothing positive about not sleeping properly.

A good night’s sleep can improve your learning, memory, decision-making and even your creativity. It can even help you to live longer, fuller and happier. If you want to improve your performance levels in all areas, whether you are an athlete, a university student, own your own business, a charity worker or a stay at home parent, there is one simple way to improve this… by getting enough sleep.

If you sleep well, it can help you can stay clear of depression, lower your stress levels

with good sleep practices and habits.

However, for some, that’s not enough. You could try the following remedies to see if they help:

THe second product is a daily moisturiser, yes, even if your skin is oily!

Some moisturisers are water-based, perfect for oily/combination skins and others contain more advanced active ingredients to kick-start your skin into doing what it should be doing naturally, such as renewal of the cells and producing collagen and elastin.

Heavens above! Pope's 'reviving wine' is on offer Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com LIDL did I know that Richard Bampfield’s renowned French wine tour had resurfaced as we all embrace the cooler climes of October.

Two white wines in particular seemed to typify French vinification and I thus selected a 2016 Lamarthe Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc priced at £5.99 and a Picpoul de Pinet priced at a pound extra.

THe Loire wine was decidedly light and refreshing and had citrus and elderflower flavours to the fore and would complement beautifully a fish and chip supper.

THe 2017 Mascavinae Picpoul de Pinet proved also to be a good buy with gooseberry and citrus fruit pervading this Picpoul added to nettle-like herbal hints and a wine that would be a great pair to salmon dishes.

THe red wines on offer really whetted my taste buds and I noted that for £6.49 I was able to procure a 2016 Domaine de Sareval Valréas Côtes Du Rhône Villages - allegedly Valréas wines restored the health of the newly-elected Pope John XXII in 1317!

THis particular example is a wellcrafted medium-bodied red with juicy red berry fruit and is silky smooth and eminently quaffable and would be great with a lamb hotpot!

For 50p further expended, the 2017 Clos Des Batuts Cahors based on the Malbec grape and, from one of France’s

oldest wine regions which is undergoing a renaissance of sorts, is full of black berries, dark fruit and spice with a long, dry finish.

My third selection was a 2016 George’s Badriou Moulin à Vent, a top 'Cru' Beaujolais, one of my favourites with red cherry characters more like a Pinot Noir

Vibrant red fruit along with bright acidity and a dry finish characterise this wine and it is one to pair with mushroom risotto.

Method

INGREDIENTS • 1.4L chicken or vegetable stock, divided • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 500g portobello mushrooms, thinly sliced • 500g button mushrooms, thinly sliced • 2 shallots, diced • 340g Arborio or risotto rice • 125ml dry white wine • 3 tablespoons finely chopped chives • 60g butter • 5 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

price of £11.99, but worth every penny with spicy dark plums and rich black berries on the nose and a creamy palate.

Such ripe fruit - go and grab one while stocks last and one that would ideally pair with a steak and kidney pie - how French, n est-ce pas? A un de ces jours!

1. In a saucepan, warm the stock over low heat.

2. Warm 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.

Stir in the mushrooms, and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Remove mushrooms and their liquid, and set aside.

3. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to frying pan, and stir in the shallots.

Cook 1 minute. Add rice, stirring to coat with oil, about 2 minutes. When the rice has taken on a pale, golden colour, pour in wine, stirring constantly until the wine is fully absorbed. Add 125ml stock to the rice, and stir until the it is absorbed.

Continue adding

stock 125ml at a time, stirring continuously, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is al dente, about 15 to 20 minutes.

4. Remove from heat, and stir in mushrooms with their liquid, butter, chives and parmesan. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

INGREDIENTS • 3 leaves gelatine • 250ml whole milk • 250ml double cream • 1 vanilla pod • 50g caster sugar • 300g fresh strawberries • Icing sugar • Mint leaves, optional

Panna Cotta with Strawberries

Method 1. To make panna cotta soak the gelatine leaves in cold water until soft. Pour the cream and double cream into a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod in half and scrape out the seeds and add to the pan. Add the sugar.

2. Heat the mixture slowly, stirring all the time until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring just to a simmer.

3. Remove the cream from the heat. Remove the gelatine from the water and squeeze well. Add to the saucepan and stir well until dissolved.

4. Pour the mixture into four ramekins, small cups or cleaned plastic yogurt pots. Chill for at least 4 hours.

5. To turn out dip each dish briefly in boiling water and invert onto plates. Scatter the fresh strawberries over and around and then sprinkle lightly with icing sugar.

Decorate with mint leaves if desired.

Community News & Views RURAL crime was discussed at a meeting between Sussex Police's Chief Constable, Giles York, and members of two major rural organisations.

Mr York talked to representatives of the National Farmers' Union and the CLA landowners' group about the continuing challenge of tackling rural crime.

He spoke about the resources available to his officres, the force's approach to crime which takes place in the countryside and the new rural policing strategy.

THose present at the annual liasion meeting also talked about solutions to specific types of rural crime.

NFU south east regional director William White said: "We hadn't seen the chief constable so upbeat about tackling rural crime for a number of years.

"He described the government's decision to allow increased precept funding as 'a game changer'. THis means net growth of 200 officers over the next four years.

"THe Sussex Police rural crime strategy is different from those of other forces in that it seeks to embed a knowledge of rural crime in every officer on the force. Sussex comprises two rural counties, so the new strategy appears to make good sense."

Farmer and landowner representatives of both organisations were present at the meeting at Chaites Farm, Bolney, thanks to sheep and arable farmer Rob Seward.

Robin Edwards, the CLA's south east regional director, said: "THe CLA welcomes the introduction of the rural policing strategy and the commitment by the chief constable to give specific rural and wildlife training to more than 800 officers over four years."

THe meeting included a discussion about livestock worrying and incursions by travellors. Updates about agricultural policy and the economic outlook were also given to the police.

Its Chichester and city district branch will be hosting the dinner at the Chichester Park Hotel on October 25 with special guest speaker Robert Lapraik, of the Mary Rose Trust.

Mr Lapraik, the trust’s deputy chief executive at the time, oversaw the design and construction of the Mary Rose Museum, which fully revealed the dry ship in the summer of 2016.

He will share a brief history of the iconic ship’s sinking, discovery and excavation, which gives a fascinating insight into life 500 years ago.

It is a fantastic opportunity to hear from a true expert about the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet, while raising valuable funds for the NSPCC. Kate Hershkowitz, the NSPCC’s community fundraising manager for Sussex, said: “THank you to everyone who has already booked tickets to this dinner, not only is it going to be great opportunity to come together for a fabulous cause but also to learn some fascinating history.

“Every penny raised will help the charity fight for every childhood, rebuild children's lives and help prevent child abuse from ruining anymore.”

Guests are invited to arrive at 7pm, for a 7.30pm start. Tickets are available at a cost of £45 and they will remain on sale until October 8.

A GROUP of fundraisers took part in a sponsored swim, raising almost £700 for charity.

THe event raised £676.61 for the Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Sue Wiltshire is vicechairman of the Medmerry Park Leaseholders Association (MPLA) in Earnley.

She said: " With most of our committee and a few holidaymakers we had a great day all for a good cause.

"We do quite a bit of fundraising for good causes.

"We feel that its good for our community, brings people together - both leaseholders and holidaymakers - which makes for a fun and enjoyable weekend for everyone and all for worthwhile causes.

"It was a brilliant day. THe weather was fantastic.

"Some of the children were being sponsored by parents at £1 a length and really enjoyed themselves.

"It's very important, and I feel that when people actually

take part in something it makes them also feel proud to have put something back into worthwhile causes. You never know when you might need them."

THe group has several events that take place each year to raise money for charities including the RNLI and the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

THe next event organised by the MPLA takes place on Saturday, October 27, and is called the Dash to Splash, in support of the RNLI. Sue said it was an easy decision when picking which charity to support when organising the swim.

"One of our committee members came up with the suggestion," she said.

"We understand that there are lots of charities around for cancer, diabeties, heart etc but some of the smaller ones provide just as important services but they miss out.

"I think the following day a lady was airlifted off West Wittering beach."

A VOLUNTEER for a charity supporting disabled people has stepped down after 30 years.

Andy Heath, pictured above, as spent time volunteering for THe Point, a Chichester-based charity that provides a muchneeded leisure activities centre for disabled adults.

THe Point's manager, Clare Goff, said: "Andy has been a hero. For 30 years he has worked behind the scenes to support the centre and its

members, selflessly giving up huge amounts of time to ensure that the young people who depend on the service get the best experience possible from attending the centre.

"He steps down as chairman of the charity and we will be forever grateful for his dedication, kindness and service."

Sir, So, we have one irresponsible woman that allows her vicious dog to attack a three-year-old child, and Cllr Hitchins' answer is to call for more notices to ban dogs going into Marine Park Gardens (Bognor Regis Post, September 21). Just what is the logic behind this ridiculous and costly suggestion?

Regardless of the size or prominence of signs, it will make no difference in preventing out of control dogs attacking children or anyone else, so why does Cllr Hitchins think that a blanket ban on all dog owners walking their well-controlled pets on a lead through the gardens will solve the problem?

Marine Park Gardens are a superb example of what Bognor Regis can achieve and it is unacceptable that some members of the community should be excluded from them, especially when these same people are contributing via their council tax for the upkeep and maintenance of them.

Equally, what sort of message does it send to visitors to the town when they find that they are banned from one of the nicest parts simply because they have decided to bring their family pet on holiday with them?

It is perhaps also worth noting that when I have walked through the gardens, seldom have I failed to see discarded beer cans, bottles or fast food packaging. Perhaps Cllr Hitchins should extend his campaign for more signs to also include a warning to people not to throw away their litter and empty beer cans.

Other councils, for example Bournemouth and Reading, have similar gardens (only larger) and do not have any problems with people walking their dogs in them. In fact, both councils actually encourage it, so why is it that Bognor Regis and, specifically, Arun District Council, always manage to find a problem? THe bylaw used by Arun to ban dogs was introduced around 2009, but the exclusion of dogs from these gardens probably dates back to the 1930s in the good old days of park keepers, manicured lawns and keep off the grass signs.

Times have now changed and this ridiculous ban is now hopelessly out of date and does not reflect modern 21st century standards or thinking. It is time that these councillors applied their time into motivating Arun District Council into dragging itself into the 21st century and replacing the dog ban signs with permanent dogs on lead signs and for a change taking a positive 'can do' attitude, but as the famously over-used saying goes "Don't hold your breath".

Sir, While I fully support traffic-calming measures on certain roads, (you mention London Road, September 28), why do councils always go for speed humps?

Just as effective, visually attractive and less uncomfortable to all vehicle passengers are the chicanes used on the continent.

A simple kerb, a large planter and an evergreen shrub are all that are required.

Surely any cost difference must be minimal.

How about it?

Guide books provide glimpse into holidays The publications are invaluable source of local history information WHAT materials can we use for local history research? Sources such as libraries, online and books are very useful. But what about town guides, those items that are issued free to perspective visitors and, in many cases, discarded after the visit? THese publications contain a real snapshot of a place, so today I thought I would take a look at just three of our previous guide books.

Starting with 1937, with a cover extolling the virtues of our health-giving area, with the bold image of the Royal Key to Health, this slogan following on from King George V’s visit in 1929. Within, there are pages covering all aspects of the town, from entertainment, churches, hospital, and so much more.

THis information could be used to decided whether to live here or not.

Several pages are given over to the healthgiving properties of our climate and the sand and beach. One interesting item is about ‘Night-time bathing’, with the beach being floodlit. Would we today consider this to be a 'bathing joy and thrill you must experience in Bognor Regis?'

Gardens and green areas feature and they have been promoted with the statement that

they ‘avoid the over-formal,’ used in many resorts. Waterloo Square and Marine Park Gardens are discussed. We must realise that, at this time, Hotham Park did not exist in the town, as these were the private gardens to the house. Pleasures were more simple at this time and a stroll along the prom or through these gardens were a great attraction to the visitor and, of course, the residents. Bognor was rated as fourth in the British Isles with 1,827 hours of sunshine.

By 1947, the guide book was still showing and promoting the ‘Royal Key to Health’ on the cover, nearly 20 years after the King’s visit.

Some sections remain as the 1937 book, but there is slightly more emphasis on summer and winter holidays, because of our climate.

THis book has an interesting section which talks of ‘THe Hotham Woodland,’ which is Bognor Regis’s great surprise for the visitor.

One of the descriptions is, 'you can leave the bustle of the shopping centre, turn in through a gateway and find yourself in a sylvan paradise'. THis haven today is better known as Hotham Park and certainly a bustle area of our town.

town as a permanent residence, with the notation of 'due to the shopping centre, level town, picture estates and our mild climate'.

Apparently, we have ‘no tire-some hills’, and that is another plus. I find it interesting to see how places are described over the decades.

Accordingly, the ‘development of road and rail transport made it possible for the dream of many, a house by the sea, to be realised long before time for retirement'.

In this guide, we have risen to third place in the sunshine league in the summer and remain top for the winter months. THere are pages of large interesting advertisements for many hotels, restaurant and other facilities around the area. Finally, the Gas and Electricity Company has an advertisement that it can help with any advice required.

Finally, I looked at a 1960 guide book - the Royal Key to Health has disappeared and the cover shows children playing on sand on the beach in front of the Royal Hotel.

I recently made a request on social media about the arrival of the shingle. I have had so many interesting and incorrect responses to the question, but no definitive answer. Here was slightly more emphasis on activities on the seafront, donkey rides and carriage rides in addition to the water-based like rowing boats and the motor and speed boats mostly provided by Ron Whittington.

THe pier had a train that could take you to the end and there was the popular boating lake just off West Street, which is now a car park. Hotham Park had developed and there was now the famous Pet’s Corner and boats on the boating pool. THere is more history of families and areas in this publication than in

the previous books.

At the end of this guide book there is an advertisement from Lec Refrigeration, the largest employer in the town, which boasts here it employs 1,000 people. It promotes what it brings to the economy of the town and also advises that special parties can visit the factory.

Hago’ is another employer advertising its work. One page states, ‘THis space is reserved for Butlin’s holiday camp'. THis reminds us that the current centre did not open until 1960. THere are 40 pages of advertising for hotels, guests house and bed and breakfast accommodation through Bognor Regis, Felpham, Aldwick etc. THere are also several pages regarding new homes being built.

Many of the items advertised or promoted in these guide books have gone because of the changing tastes in the expectations of our holiday. Many people now go abroad or go on cruises rather than visit a seaside resort.

THe quiet solitude of leafy glades are not sought so much as thrills and spills. THe numerous holiday centres we now have pay testament to this with their entertainment, fairgrounds and water features, none of which could have been envisaged in the past. Transport has changed since the days of people arriving by train. THey now arrive in much small groups by car to increase the need for car parking.

We can all look back to idyllic holidays at the seaside but realise our needs and expectations have changed. Opportunities for travel have also increased dramatically to give us more diverse holidays than just sitting on the beach.

Chi open season account in style PostSport with a ten-try thriller against rivals CHICHESTER secured their first league win of the season in the grandest style on Saturday as they edged out local rivals in a ten-try thriller.

THe club claimed maximum points with a bonus point victory over border rivals Havant to end a four-game losing streak that opened their season.

With a game at home to fellow strugglers and league newcomers Dartfordians this Saturday, Chi players and staff will be hopeful they’ve reached a turning point in the season.

Chichester made eight changes to the team that lost to Camberley 18-33 in monsoon conditions a week earlier and the refreshed line-up made good use of the much improved weather conditions.

With a strong home crowd willing them on, the home side stole the initiative straight out of the traps to take an early 7-0 lead through Callum Gibson after just two minutes.

THat lead was stretched to 10-0 in the first quarter before a Chi sin-binning saw Havant

edge back into the game with a penalty only for the home side to reassert their control with another converted try.

Havant got back into the game with a try of their own to make it 17-8.

But Chichester bagged decisive scores either side of half-time to open up a 27-13 lead only for Havant to roar back to level the scores at 27 with 25 minutes to play.

Nerves were now frayed on the pitch and on the sidelines as both sides saw a golden opportunity to clinch their first win of the season.

An Ed Bowden try put Chi seven ahead and, while Havant struck back, crucially they missed the conversion to leave the home side ahead and Harry Seaman snatched the win with a final try.

THe tries were also flowing freely at Bognor, who romped to a 52-17 win at home to New Milton and District to record their biggest win of the season so far to take them to fourth in the Hampshire Premier.

ONE HUNDRED years of Priory Park access for the public was celebrated in style as Sussex’s stars helped produce a final ball T20 thriller.

Fittingly, to mark the centenary of the 7th Duke of Richmond gifting Priory Park to the people of Chichester, it was THe Duke’s XI who eventually prevailed against the Sussex CCC with two runs from the final ball.

While Sussex called upon current stars, including the Lukes Wright and Wells, alongside coach and former Aussie test bowler Jason Gillespie, THe Duke’s XI comprised keen amateurs from various levels of the sport as well as some Sussex stars to bolster their ranks.

To level the playing field for THe Duke’s XI, they had 12 players take to the field in accordance to rules dating back to 1727 which state they did not apply to THe Duke’s team.

With star line-ups and beautiful sunshine, around 1,500 people were drawn in to watch the action free of charge and they were royally entertained from the start with Sussex getting off to a flier thanks to Luke Wells, 43 from 18

balls, and Harry Finch, 57 from 29 balls.

THe Duke’s XI, however ,were not daunted

by Sussex’s total of 239-6 with Southern Vipers’ Georgia Adams and Luke Wright, who bludgeoned 85 from just 27 balls, keeping the run rate within reach.

As wickets began to fall in the chase, the Duke XI’s amateur players chipped in with vital contributions with senior Andy Barnes, 26 runs from 24 balls, and team captain and the current Duke’s son, Charlie March, 16 from 15 balls.

Despite losing Sussex speed sensation Jofra Archer for a golden duck and Gillespie falling on the penultimate ball with victory in their sights, Goodwood CC captain James Mayne held his nerve to scramble a couple from the 120th ball of the innings to claim victory.

Richard Geffen, event co-organiser and Goodwood CC chairman, said: “THere was a real community feel. It is not often one gets the opportunity to see international and county players for free in such a historic setting.”

RUNNING: Tone Zone Runners members competed in five races in the past week.

THe Felpham-based club saw its name feature in the finishers across a wide area. Some fine personal performances were achieved among the various events.

First to take part was Byron Kearns, who recorded a personal best of 18:36 minutes to finish sixth overall in a 5k race at Worthing Rowing Club in midweek.

Luke Simmonds travelled to the Home Counties to take on the Pyjamathon near Walton-on-THames. THankfully, he didn't have to run in his pyjamas despite the name of the race. He was another Tone Zone member to set a personal best as he finished the marathon in 3 hours and 44 minutes.

Over at Windsor Castle, the Windsor Half Marathon took place for its 36th year.

THe 13.1 mile course takes runners through Windsor Great Park, passing the Royal Lodge, chapel and school before it approaches the Queen Elizabeth II statue and Windsor Castle for the finish line.

Four club members flew the blue and orange flag along the regal route.

Sam Miles was the first home for the club, recording a time of two hours and three minutes. Ellie Matthews, who only started running seven months ago, crossed the line with Lesley Ward as they both finished in under the 2:15 mark for a great time for the course.

Sarah Spurr finished in 2:27.

On the same day, the Barns Green Half Marathon also marked its 36th year of being held.

Jessica THomson completed the undulating course in 1:36 to record another personal best for the year.

Michael Manwell, who has already competed in numerous half marathons this year, finished shortly after THomson in 1:41.

Finishing off the THomson sandwich was Stuart THomson. THe ever-consistent runner crossed the line in 2:30.

Closer to home, at the Ageas Bowl 10k near Southampton, the club was represented by Mark Green.

THe race started and finished at the international cricket ground. Green ran a really consistent race to grab himself a personal best for the distance of 43:39.

Cup win puts gloss on great week for Chi after 7-0 romp

Lions keep up at top of table THE LIONS stayed in the hunt with the early Premier Division pacesetters after holding their nerve in a topsy-turvy fixture away at mid-table Uckfield.

Starting with all the confidence of a team who were undefeated in eight leagues games to start the season, Pagham bossed the early stages on Saturday with George Gaskin tapping home on 25 minutes from a dangerous centre by Jack Rowe-Hurst.

THe Lions refused to sit on their lead and pushed for more goals which duly arrived within sight of halftime when Rowe-Hurst turned from provider to scorer with a delicious piece of skill to pluck a deep ball out of the air before lobbing the Uckfield keeper from 18 yards.

But the visitors couldn’t hold on to their two goal advantage until half-time, conceding in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts hope.

Tempers flared on the halftime whistle and the Uckers would have to marshal the rest of their comeback without

manager Anthony Storey, who was banished to the stands.

Seven minutes into the second half and the home side were level when THe Lions could not relieve sustained pressure and Uckfield equalised despite claims for offside in the scramble.

Momentum was now well and truly with the home side and another untidy goal saw Uckfield take the lead for the first time on 64 minutes.

Not for the first time this season, Pagham showed they have plenty of resilience and levelled the game again five minutes later when Howard Neighbour nodded home a Johan van Driel corner to set up a barnstorming finish with both teams pushing for the three points.

And it was to be Pagham’s day when another corner was turned home by Callum Overton on 80 minutes despite Uckfield claims it had not crossed the line.

THe Lions can go ten undefeated when they play Langney Wanderers at home tomorrow.

CHICHESTER knocked out a battling Hassocks this week to claim their place in the second round of the Parafix Susex Senior Challenge Cup. Chi had already dispatched the visitors once this season with a 6-0 hammering just two months ago - but it was a much tighter affair under the lights at Oaklands Park on Tuesday.

Scott Jones continued his recent scoring streak to give Chi the lead before Hassocks equalised but the tie was decided before halftime with a stunning long-range drive.

On Saturday, Chi worked out the frustration of losing their unbeaten start in the top-ofthe-table clash seven days earlier by hitting Lingfield for seven.

Kaleem Haitham quickly showed there would be no hangover from Saltdean with the opener before Jones, Matt Axell and Rob Hutchings all got on the scoresheet before half-time.

THere was no let-up in the second half with Jones again, substitute Gicu Iordache and a Lingfield own goal sealing the emphatic win that leaves this weekend’s opponents Little Common with much to ponder.

Sids' long cup journey in vain

A 114-MILE round trip is about as arduous as they come in the Sussex Senior Cup and it proved a bridge too far for Sidlesham on Tuesday night.

THe Premier Division quality of hosts Eastbourne Town shone through in the closing stages of the first round.

For 78 minutes, the Division One side matched their hosts before three late goals, including two in stoppage time, gave Eastbourne a margin of victory that was harsh on the battling Sids.

Sidlesham were on the right end of late drama against East Sussex opponents last weekend

when three goals in nine second-half minutes ended Hailsham Town’s unbeaten start to the season. THe Sids got out in front early courtesy of a Ben Mepham goal only to be pegged back shortly after half-time.

Goals from Joe Grommett and Tommy LeeSmith within the last ten minutes looked to have sealed it for the home side but they needed the cushion of a fourth, and a second from Grommett, after Hailsham pulled one back.

Another tough test lies ahead for Sidlesham this weekend as they travel back across the county to take on free-scoring Bexhill.

Selsey will be in the hat for the next round after a battling come-from-behind win against Premier Division Arundel.

THe visitors looked like they would make their extra class count with a stunning opener ten minutes before the break. But the Seals regrouped and deservedly equalised just before the hour mark when Tom Jefkins confidently dispatched his penalty. THe home side continued to push for a winner and were rewarded in the last-minute by Dan Bassil.

Bassil was also on target at the weekend in a six-goal thriller at Bexhill United. His opener was quickly doubled within 60 seconds by Remi Coates as Selsey threatened to run away with the game only for Bexhill to pull one back – all within the first 15 minutes.

A calm finish from Callum Dowdell reasserted the two-goal cushion but the visitors could not hold out and a disputed last minute penalty meant the spoils were shared.

Selsey face a daunting weekend trip to Vardeanians who are yet to taste defeat in the league this season. More early goals and more spoils were shared at Walton Lane where Bosham were held by Upper Beeding in the Division Two clash on Saturday. THe Robins trailed after 11 minutes but were level again within two as Alex Barnes evened the scores.

THe club remain fourth from bottom after picking up only their fourth point of the season and travel to mid-table Littlehampton United tomorrow.

CHICHESTER City Ladies preserved their proud unbeaten run on the road with another victory built on solid defence.

THe visitors, with the second best defence in the Southern Premier Division having conceded less than a goal a game, kept another clean sheet away to Loughborough Foxes Women, requiring a solitary goal from Molly Clark to claim all three points.

THe win leaves Chi in the running at the top of the table ahead of a three-week break in the fixture list.

THey will hope to kick on from where they left off when they take their 100 per cent away record to Queens Park Rangers Ladies on Sunday, October 21.

Win number four on the road this season

was a hard-earned victory following a tight first-half with Gemma Simmonds, one of three changes to the line-up after the defeat at home to Coventry a fortnight earlier, going close for the visitors with a deft chip in an entertaining first half. Clark also fired a severe warning shot to the hosts of her threat when she hit the bar.

Chi burst out the blocks in the second half and edged their noses in front within two minutes of the restart when Clark tapped home a Jade Widdows’ cross for her fifth of the season.

THe hosts were unable to build much momentum towards a comeback with Clark on the break the most likely source of a second goal which never materialised but was not needed.

Rocks show heart to bounce back from FA Cup disaster Next Game

TONBRIDGE ANGELS (A) October 13

BOGNOR brushed off FA Cup heartache with two contrasting performances of resolution and ability to harden their promotion challenger credentials.

THe Rocks’ players helped to banish some of the crushing disappointment of losing to lower-league Sudbury in the FA Cup qualifying rounds with two encouraging performances to maintain their undefeated start to the league season.

Saturday saw Bognor battle back from two down at half-time to salvage a point and make it five away draws on the spin before they unleashed a second 8-0 hammering of visitors to Nyewood Lane already this season on Tuesday.

Manager Jack Pearce told the Post he had been delighted with the players’ response following a half-time rollocking at Sudbury.

He said: “I was delighted with the reaction after the disappointing first half at Sudbury.

We were totally dominant in the second half of that game.

“THat’s what makes football such a wonderful game. You know who’s going to be on top but it all depends who takes their chances.

“Unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of that against Sudbury and it’s a disaster for the club in terms of financial impact but we dust ourselves down and we go again."

Saturday saw a similarly sluggish start from

the Rocks in their first-ever meeting with Potters Bar Town and Bognor trailed to two first half set-pieces - conceding cheaply from a corner after 11 minutes and a direct freekick a minute before the break.

Dan Smith halved the deficit four minutes after the restart, drilling home after pouncing on a loose pass from the hosts, before captain Harvey Whyte completed the comeback in the 78th minute with a delicious curling strike after cutting in from the wing.

Despite failing to win on the road in the league so far this season, Pearce has no worries about the club’s form away from Nyewood Lane.

He said: “I’m delighted with the away form.

We’re unbeaten and we’ve been competitive every game and in most, if there was going to be a winner, it looked like it would come from us.”

THere’s certainly nothing wrong with the Rocks' home form as Tuesday night’s 8-0 victory against Burgess Hill means they’ve now lashed home 25 goals at home in just five games.

Tommy Scutt bagged a second-half hat-trick as part of a blitz which saw six goals in the final half hour.

THe defeat could be Burgess Hill manager Ian Chapman’s last game in charge after he offered his resignation after the game and has been placed on a short leave of absence.

Injuries cause squad concerns THE ROCKS will make use of their enforced ten-day break from league and cup action to try and bolster their injury-hit squad.

Manager Jack Pearce told the Post he would look to bring in a centre-half and possibly a forward after three key players picked up injuries in the past two league games.

Saturday’s scheduled game against Corinthian Casuals has been postponed because of the south-west London club’s continuing presence in the FA Cup. Keaton Wood limped out of Saturday’s draw at Potters Bar in the first half with an ankle injury. Further first-half knocks to Dan Smith and Corey Heath on Tuesday night mean the Rocks' squad is stretched to breaking point.

Pearce said: “Everyone knows our squad is very small but we have got ten days to try and add to it. THat is going to be very difficult.

"We know it’s not easy to attract quality players to our neck of the woods at this stage of the season. THe problems were there for all to see last year but we just need to work hard and see what happens.”

As well as losing three key players, Pearce is also worried their absence means his side has lost three good physical players who are likely to be hard to replace.

SO WE are out of the FA Cup against a side lower down the pyramid than us.

I, along with everyone else, was very disappointed we didn’t progress to take on Haringey Borough away in the next round. We didn’t really get off to a good start in the home game against AFC Sudbury as we could only muster a 1-1 draw with Harvey Whyte netting our goal.

THis meant a replay that following Tuesday. I couldn’t make it unfortunately because of work commitments but I was so thoroughly gripped to Lee Roberts and Peter Hood’s Rocks Radio commentary that it was almost like being there anyway.

Listening in from the office was great and, with the wonders of technology, all on my phone. I managed to catch the last 20 or so minutes of the second half and then the extra time proceedings following that. It sounded like we were cruising at 2-1 up and the likelier to score but then a silly free kick was given away and suddenly we were drawing 2-2.

Bognor then conceded in extra time to send AFC Sudbury through to the next round. Fair play to them. THey obviously turned up and we didn’t across the two matches and they took their chances - something we were criticised for not doing last season.

But we still have other cups (Sussex Senior, FA Trophy, Velocity Trophy) to contend with and our league matches as well so a lot of games still to get through this season.

We made the long trip up to the Pekex Stadium to take on Potters Bar Town next. A team founded in the 1960s that clearly had a long way to go off the pitch. THe ground was poor (I have seen better at county league level) and, apparently, they offered to play the game at Nyewood Lane.

But that would have meant we needed to play five away fixtures later on in the year,

so, obviously, we didn’t agree terms.

THis was one of the poorest first halves I have seen this season. We let in two goals from set pieces, a corner kick headed in and a free kick from outside the box.

But a re-energised team came out in the second half and you could see the difference when Mason Walsh came on. He’s gaining a good understanding with Joe Tomlinson on the left hand flank.

Dan Smith netted the first on 49 minutes following a mix up in defence and then Whyte’s goal later on was sublime. We deserved the point in the end but it was a shame we didn’t play like that in the first 45 minutes.

I am just worried slightly that we are drawing a lot away and can’t see games out - but I am sure this will change as the season progresses.

It’s a different story at Nyewood Lane as we continue to score goals for fun. Burgess Hill Town were our latest victims, succumbing to an 8-0 drubbing in front of 433 fans this past Tuesday night.

THis win moved us up to second in the table! Who would have thought we would be in this position during pre-season - I certainly didn’t.

Stand out performances for me were Tommy Scutt (scoring a hat-trick, pictured above), Tommy Block (I am a big fan), and Doug Tuck, who were all on form. But players like Bradley Lethbridge, Calvin Davies and Jimmy Muitt also shone.

Not to mention Dan Lincoln getting a clean sheet which was vital after the Potters Bar result.

It is rather worrying, though, we have another injury to contend with as Corey Heath turned his ankle on the turf and had to be carried off during this game.

With Heath and Keaton Wood on the sidelines, it looks like our favourite utility man Block will be needed in defence.
