More young people seek help HOUSING problems are causing more younger people to turn to a help centre in Bognor Regis.

An increasing number of those aged under 44 have sought assistance from the Citizens Advice.

Difficulties in obtaining a home or with a property landlord are one of the main reasons they have asked for advice.

State benefits also feature highly in their requests. A limited number also want

help with dealing with debts they feel have got out of control.

Call for debate on town ice rink plan A PUBLIC debate has been proposed about a potential ice rink in Bognor Regis.

The meeting would discuss the benefits of the ice rink plan put forward by the town's civic society against Arun District Council's linear park proposals.

The society's 2,479 signature petition to the council for a multi-use entertainment and ice rink complex to be included in the council's regeneration plans was turned down last month.

But the proposal - now titled the Bognor Regis Pavilion - has received a lot of public support.

Hugh Coster, the society's deputy chairman, said: "Many people are asking why Arun plans to spend £4m on rearranging a car park - yet rejects a proven attraction which has shown it can bring thousands into the town on a repeat basis all year round.

"With ice skating over the Christmas period and multiple other entertainment uses for visitors and residents throughout the rest of the year, the pavilion has to be way ahead of mere gardens in terms of attracting the paying public into the town."

The society is concerned the district council has failed to fully explain why it favours the linear park over the multiuse pavilion.

It has emailed all Arun's councillors to invite them to participate in a public debate to help the residents of Bognor Regis to understand this.

The debate will be held on a date yet to

be agreed to suit the councillors' diaries and enable as many as possible to attend.

"We sincerely hope councillors will show their respect for Bognor Regis residents by attending and giving as much information as possible," said Mr Coster, "particularly as we have council elections coming up next May. "This could be a decisive issue and everybody will wish to hear where councillors and candidates stand on the matter.

"This is a key decision for the future of the town..."

He called for all discussions about the issue to be debated in public by Arun.

The date of the debate will be issued by the civic society, along with a list of those councillors who will be attending, to enable people to go along and take part.

The civic society has modelled its idea on the Robson Square multi-use complex in Vancouver, Canada.

This has ice skating during the Christmas period and other entertainments for the rest of the year.

Its design is said by the civic society to be typical of how the Bognor Regis Pavilion might look.

Day and night use of the pavilion would be expected to contribute to the town's economy along with the ability to host all weather events.

Arun has put forward its linear park plans to replace the current Hothamton car park and the sunken garden as part of its regeneration ideas for two key sites in the town.

Seafront mounds removed to make way for temporary rink WORK is set to get underway to flatten two of the grass mounds along Bognor Regis seafront.

Arun District Council's contractor will begin to remove and level the site in Place St Maur ready for a bigger Christmas ice rink to be installed.

The initial work is due to begin soon and is expected to be finished within two weeks.

An Arun spokesman said: "Alongside this work, there will also be a small demolition project to remove the nonstructural projecting wall attached to the theatre near Belmont Street and lay Tarmac to leave a level surface. This work

will be done before mid-November.

"These small changes will enable a bigger and better ice rink this year, with an improved range of seasonal stalls and children's activities. It will also make Place St Maur more suitable for events and markets in the future."

The installation of the ice rink, stalls and marquee will begin on November between 8am and 6pm.

The rink will open for skating from from 10am-9pm from November 22 to January 6, excluding Christmas Day. The mounds date from the late 1970s/ early 1980s when the Regis Centre was built.

f The Rev Jo King at Holy Cross Church NEW vicar Jo King is happy to link her North Bersted church with a pub.

The unofficial association helps her to direct newcomers to the often overlooked Holy Cross Church.

"I just tell people the church is next to the 'Pink Pub' (The Royal Oak). Everybody in West Sussex knows where the 'Pink Pub' is," she said.

The church is located at the junction of Chichester Road and North Bersted Street across the road from the well-known pub.

The Rev King arrived as the church's priest in charge earlier this month.

She had been the curate at St Thomas a'Becket Church in Pagham for four years.

That was her first job in the Church of England. She describes it as similar to an apprenticeship.

"I have been in the CofE all my life," she said. "I love the mix of things I get to do.

"I get to hang out with all sorts of different people of different ages and from different backgrounds.

"There are people who have never been to the church before and people who have been attending for years. No two days are ever the same."

Mrs King, 46, was a primary school teacher for many years during her earlier working life in the education sector.

She has lived in the Bognor Regis, Chichester and Portsmouth areas for the past 20 years. She is married and has two daughters, aged seven and 15.

She succeeded the Rev Ann Clarke as one of Holy Cross Church's few vicars.

It is the newest parish in the Bognor Regis area, with a priest in charge from 2001 - but its origins date from 1880.

It was then the thatched Cross Cottage, formerly a blacksmith, and licensed

by the Bishop of Chichester for divine service. In 1894, a mission hall was built.

This is now the nave and was a daughter of St Mary Magdalene Church in South Bersted and served by one of its curates. A chancel was added in 1930 and enlarged further in 1973. Ten years later, and the church stopped being a sister church and became a conventional district.

Mrs King said the main Sunday service attracted an average congregation of some 50 worshippers aged two to 90.

"I think the church still makes quite a difference to communities," she added.

"It is a place people come to and meet and, if its hall was taken away, it would affect a lot of groups. It is busy throughout the week.

"A church is one of the few places where people of all ages can come together without being frightened of each other."

Bridge replacement is halted - see page 5

PUBLIC toilets installed on Bognor Regis seafront have been condemned as a blot on the landscape.

Work on the unisex loos was due to be finished yesterday. They replace sets of underground toilets for men and women.

But town councillor Jeanette Warr said the building was an unworthy addition to the promenade.

"All these new toilets look like is a glorified Portaloo. Arun District Council have spent all our hardearned money on them.

"I sincerely hope that whatever else they have planned for our promenade they will definitely consult with us about the design," she said.

"We don't want any more buildings on our seafront like these toilets."

The council budgeted ÂŁ200,000 for the new loos, located opposite Walton Avenue.

Their arrival was delayed from their intended installation just before the school summer holidays.

The company which manufactured the toilets at its factory was unable to meet its promised schedule.

This saw the council forced to accept portable toilets paid for by the firm.

These were disconnected at the start of this month.

Arun has said the underground loos had to close last year because of antisocial behaviour and flooding. It put in temporary toilets last year.

The new toilets have five cubicles, one suitable for wheelchair users, and

In the design document, the building's architect were said to have been inspired by waves crashing over pebbles.

"The waves twist and distort as they pass over the pebbles and this is translated to the toilet building and (unbuilt) beach office.

"The pebbles themselves create a softer, more inviting, form, resulting in a striking dialogue between the two.

"The concept creates a conversation between the beach and the architecture, connecting the two elements harmoniously.

"The horizontal banding of the buildings reflects similar approaches taken within Bognor Regis...whilst the cladding is panelised to introduce a smaller more human scale."

But comments on social media have generally been against the loos.

Glen Scott wrote: "Absolutely awful doesn't fit in at all looks all wrong."

Mary Herting said: "The bandstand, 90 metres away, should have been the inspiration for this building."

Tricia Gore stated: "Look simply dreadful - hate unisex toilets!

But Arion Gadd said: "I quite like the way they look actually.."

Sally Stanley said: "If they survive winter will be a very welcome addition to seafront especially when things like carnivals etc are on and people need to go."

` Work at toilets FREE half-term activities are being held in Bognor Regis town centre next week.

The Bognor Community Gardeners are hosting the Forest Knights from 10am-2pm on Wednesday at the Hothamton Sunken Garden. The fun on offer includes basic bushcraft, rope makinig, wood whittling and marshmallow toasting.

Matt Stanley, speaking for the gardeners, said: "This is the first of what we hope will be a regular programme of events at the Sunken Garden to try and showcase the award-winning work of the gardeners and encourage the wider community to use this greenspace."

` Jobless latest YOUTH unemployment around Bognor Regis remained stable last month. The total number of claimants aged 18-24 at the town's Jobcentre Plus was 150 last month exactly the same as August.

For adults, the number climbed 105 to 915 for a 13 per cent increase but the government has stated the start of universal credit last summer could affect the figures.

More homes plan for town HUNDREDS of new homes are being proposed for Bognor Regis.

The town is expected to take the biggest share of the 1,250-plus dwellings which Arun District Council has to allocate land for in its local plan.

Its councillors agreed an initial target of 300 homes for Bognor Regis to be built by 2031.

Many of these are likely to be included in the regeneration schemes the council is pursuing for the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites.

A statement by the council with its suggested housing numbers says: "The town is a sustainable location which is considered suitable for development.

"Development will also assist with the economic regeneration of the town in accordance with the aims of the Arun local plan. No strategic allocation proposed, therefore a 200 per cent increase based on potential land supply."

This refers to the fact no large-scale housing developments were included by the council for Bognor Regis in the local plan land use blueprint.

Under calculations based on a split across the district of the extra homes Arun needs to allow for and the available land, the final figure for the town is double what would be expected.

The second highest figure of proposed housing across the district is the 200 put forward for Middleton.

The comment which justifies this figure states: "Significant potential and supply but moderate based on character, site

availability and significant contrasts."

Other parishes expected to have room for additional homes include Yapton (90), Barnham (75) and Walberton (60).

Members of Arun's local plan subcommittee's agreed on Tuesday to recommend the broad targets to start the formal talks with the parish councils.

Planning policy team leader Kevin Owen told councillors a recent workshop had been held with the parishes as part of ongoing discussions about the matter.

"At the moment, two parishes Aldingbourne (70 homes) and Pagham (10 homes) - do not seem to be prepared to engage in the process.

"Eight parishes are not reviewing their neighbourhood plans (which sets aside land for housing) or are disputing their housing figures. Middleton are to going to review their neighbourhood plan but are proposing alternative targets," he said.

"And five parishes are still considering their positions."

He hoped agreement on the housing would be reached by next spring to enable more formal plans to be decided.

Arun had the power to impose the homes but it would prefer the parishes to have a big say in the sites, said Mr Owen.

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "We are being asked to consider these figures as a consultation starting point.

"It's inevitable some changes are going to be made. Evidence for and against certain developments is going to come forward."

The transformation of Opengate Church took place for its first womenonly comedy night as part of its Cherished series of events.

Guest comedienne Jo Enright provided the jokes to the delight of the large audience in the Victoria Drive building.

Two bars and ice cream were available at the interval to add to the impression of a special night out for those present.

Jo lived up to her award-winning reputation with an hilarity-filled time.

The packed house also enjoyed music with Cathy Burton.

Event organiser Julie Passmore said: "We have had 100 per cent positive

feedback. The night exceeded our expectations."

The church's next Cherished occasion is fast approaching. It will take place on November 10 with guest speaker Ellen Wild and her theme of Spiritual Adoption - what every heart should know.

The day-long occasion will include coffee, lunch and a range of seminars and workshops. It is looking to be another sell-out.

Delay stops bridge work

WORK to replace a Bognor Regis footbridge has been delayed at the last minute.

Network Rail has been forced to postpone the replacement of the bridge in Ivy Lane because it has failed to follow the correct legal procedures.

The company has to apply to West Sussex County Council for a footpath diversion order to close the bridge but has not done that.

The process takes several months to lead it to put back the start date from this week.

Andrew Goodwill, one of the Ivy Lane residents who has campaigned against the bridge plans, said: “We knew about the footpath order and had spoken to the county council about it in the summer.

Mr Goodwill said: “We would accept the new bridge if the entrances were the same and the bridge was in the same place. But Network Rail are saying they can’t do this.”

Cllr Oppler, Lib Dem member for Bognor Regis East, said he believed it would take four to five months to obtain the closure order for the footbridge.

“I share residents’ anger and dismay at the total lack of meaningful consultation from Network Rail. I had not been informed as the county councillor, nor were my Arun district colleagues.

"The bridge needs to be replaced.

I would like Network Rail to appoint architects to draw up a bespoke design which better meets the requirements of that site and which does not disturb the residents who live next door to it.

"At the moment, they can't see the bridge and people on the bridge can't see them," he said.

A Network Rail spokesman said the approved bridge had been built off-site ready to be installed.

He told Cllr Oppler: "Several designs have been considered. However, all will involve some degree of an increase of overlook of nearby residents."

Modern building regulations required landings between short flights of stairs to enable people with limited mobility to more easily use the bridge to rule out the current design being repeated.

New school's boost EDUCATION watchdogs have given a new school in Felpham a 'good' rating on their first visit.

The Ofsted inspectors said the new era at Bishop Tufnell CE Primary School was on a rapid path to improvement against the work of the former infant and junior schools from which it was created last summer.

They stated: "The new headteacher and interim deputy headteacher have started to tackle the inherent weaknesses of the school. Capacity for further rapid improvement is clear to see.

"Children in early years benefit from a good and improving quality of education. Leadership of early years is sound. Priorities for improvement have been identified and are being acted upon.

"As a result, children who have recently joined the school are thriving and already making strong progress in all

Haircut helps children A CARING Bersted Guide used her head to start raising funds to help two sets of young children.

Sophie Gilbert was sponsored for about £200 to have her long hair shortened for the first time.

She donated the cuttings to the Little Princess Trust to be made into wigs to help seriously ill youngsters.

The money is going towards the funds she needs to raise for a three-week working visit to Argentina next summer.

Sophie, 14, of 1st Bersted Guides, said: "My hair was 11ins long from ponytail. It took about 90 minutes to have it cut and styled by one of my mother's friends.

"It's the first time I have had it this short. It feels different. I keep going to part it and tie up but it's not there."

Sophie, of Winston Crescent, North Bersted, has to raise £2,800 in monthly instalments to pay for her visit to the South American country.

She will be making the near 7,000-mile journey from July 27 to August 18.

She will be staying in Cordoba with nine other Guides and three leaders. They will spend the mornings teaching in a nursery and renovating the building in the afternoons.

Leisure time will be spent learning Spanish, cooking Argentine meals and practising the Argentinian tango. Ziplining, horse riding, abseiling and a visit to a world-famous heritage site are also in prospect.

Sophie had to undergo a two-stage selection process to secure a place on the visit.

"I thought it would be an amazing experience and I would gain more confidence from it as well," she said.

A member of Girlguiding since she was seven, Sophie has so far raised £660, including a grant from the Guides, and will be staging more events to raise money.

These include a variety show at the Newtown Sports and Social Club in Bognor Regis on March 2 and a 2.8m virtual run for a medal. Entry is on her Instagram page: 2.8mile_virtual_run

From page one under 25 were comparable at 6.5 per cent following the earlier 6.9 per cent. The mid-range age of 45-54 also increased to one in five of the centres’ clients but the two older age groups both showed significant declines.

Overall, the centres and outreach services were busier than ever.

“Our total client numbers keep going up and up,” said Mr Badioli.

Among them were 1,030 clients who were either homeless, under repossession, eviction or subject to bailiff action. More than a third were experiencing difficulties in the private rented sector.

The total of clients who asked for charitable support and foodbank vouchers increased during the year from 139 in the first quarter to 213 in the final one to reach a total of 686.

Mr Bardioli made his first presentation to an annual meeting after he was appointed to his role at the start of this year.

Among the centre's successful schemes is the home visiting project.

This has been funded by a private individual for £20,000 a year for the past five years.

Five clients a week are being seen who would otherwise be unable to seek advice. Cath Naylor, of the Citizens Advice projects team, said: “The benefit to the community is clear with an average benefit award of £4,166 per client per annum.

“The home visitor will also check if ancillary benefits such as a blue badge can be obtained which ensures improvement of quality of life.

“The project...has seen substantial increases every year. The service user’s mental health also improves because of the service we provide.”

New leadership at the Pennyfields in school has included new headteacher Nick Sharp. He has a proven track record of improvement and moved Yapton CE Primary School from 'requires improvement' to 'good' during his time there.

As a church school, its leaders including Jo Naylor, who chairs the governors - were pleased with comments about the values-based culture, which is underpinned by a Christian ethos.

Key areas for improvement noted by the inspected are being acted upon. This includes inconsistencies of teaching and learning and the level of challenge to pupils to ensure they all do well.

Mr Sharp will be sharing the specific plans with parents in the coming weeks.

Councils join call for action TOWN councillors want the government to step in and take charge of the 'bewildering' large-scale plans for housing in Pagham.

They have told the secretary for communities and local government, Sajud Javid, he should make the final decision about the schemes for nearly 1,000 homes.

Ruth Hambleton, a committee clerk at Bognor Regis Town Council, said its planning and licensing committee members agreed with Pagham Parish Council about the situation.

"The town council sympathises with the predicament that the village of Pagham finds itself in.

"It is inevitable that Pagham will have to take on some development due to the housing need in the district.

"But the scale proposed, if all three applications are granted approval, is bewildering for a village of its size.

"Bognor Regis is the nearest town to Pagham village, just over three miles away, and there will obviously be some impact on the town and its 24,000 residents.

Therefore, the town council wishes to support Pagham Parish Council with its call in application to the secretary of state."

The area's road networks cannot cope with the current amount of traffic, particularly at peak time, without another 1,000-2,000 vehicles from the new developments being added, said Mrs Hambleton.

Transport links were also poor and could be unreliable, she stated.

She said: "In addition, West Sussex has the lowest funding support from central government for education in the country and any increase in pupil numbers from

the proposed new developments will only add to the financial restraints on the local schools.

"For education, skills and training, wards within Bognor Regis are listed in the ten per cent most deprived nationally."

The town's services were also stretched and it lacked the amenities to support surrounding communities like Pagham, she added.

As reported, Pagham Parish Council has asked Mr Javid to 'call in' the applications for Sefter Road, Summer Lane and Hook Lane and take the decision out of the hands of Arun District Council.

The stance has been backed by Bersted Parish Council as well. Its chairman, Cllr Brian Knight, has told Mr Javid: "With Bersted to the north, the sea to the south and Pagham Harbour local nature reserve to the west, almost all vehicular traffic travelling in and out of Pagham must pass through Bersted.

"Accordingly, we have recently conducted traffic surveys that reveal a daily flow rate of almost 1,000 vehicles per hour during peak periods. Pagham's own figures, taken on narrow country roads that have changed very little in the last 100 years - support these findings."

This information made it clear the roads in the area were approaching saturation point, he said.

Arun has to make a decision about the housing plans, whether or not Mr Javid goes ahead with the 'call in'.

Its development control committee has been recommended by its planning officers to approve all of them at a special meeting next Wednesday.

Keen photographers see new group step up its meetings AN IMMEDIATE surge in interest has seen the new Pagham Photographers increase the frequency of its meetings.

The original intention of monthly sessions has been changed to fortnightly ones from this week. The next session will take place at 7.45pm on Tuesday, in Pagham Village Hall.

"Led by Barry Gee, supported by myself and Jennifer Rowbotham, the mood was light-hearted and positive.

"Members took away some good

tips and are on their way to being competent photographers in the not too distant future.

"Each meeting will be a mixture of a talk followed by a practical session.

"We will also be staging regular trips out to places of interest to hone our skills.

"We are targeting the less experienced photographers - people who want to take better pictures but don't know how."

BORDER collie Zak brought some fourlegged help to Bognor Regis sight loss group members.

Six-year-old Zak was taken along to the latest monthly meeting of the town's Macular Society support group by his owner, Derick Wild, in his role as a member of Pets As Therapy.

Derick said: "Zak provides tactile support to patients in hospitals and residents in homes. It's been medically proven that stroking a pet, whether that's a cat or a dog, helps people want to get better sooner, if they can."

Derick takes Zak into Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital every Thursday where he is a popular visitor on Leslie Smith ward for two hours.

"He is always pleased to see people," said Derick.

Zak's presence was one of the highlights of the support group's session at the 4Sight Vision Support premises in Victoria Drive.

The meeting was led by Mandy Whitman, a senior sight loss advisor for the charity.

She is based at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester and sees about 20 patients a month after they have been diagnosed with sight loss. Many more phone calls and emails arrive from other patients.

"I help a lot of people who come to me to register as partially sighted or severely sight impaired.

"That opens a lot of doors for them. I put them in touch with organisations which can also help them with support and equipment.

"Some of those who visit me know they had an eye problem but, for others, the diagnosis is a complete shock.

"A lot of them are worried about what the future might hold, particularly if they are on their own," she said.

The group meets on the seond Thursday monthly at the 4Sight Vision Support premises.

The warm home discount is a government scheme that provides help towards winter fuel costs.

It is automatically given to pensioners who receive pension credit. Customers might also be able to receive the discount if they receive certain income-related benefits or are on a low income. But they have to make a claim.

An Arun District Council spokesman said: "Residents are encouraged to contact their electricity supplier to see if they are eligible and to apply. Don't delay as the scheme runs on a first come, first served basis."

Visit to twin town adds new friends NEW AND firm friendships were made on a visit to one of the twin towns of Bognor Regis.

The latest stay in Trebbin, in Germany, confirmed the strong ties between the two towns begun in 1994.

Trebbin is situated about 20 miles south of Berlin and was seen for the first time by three young people taken along

by Bognor Regis Twinning Association to encourage younger generations to find out more about the town's strong links.

Lucy Budge, Marnie Lord and Harry Mason were among those on their first visit for the town after they were selected by the association following a grant from Bognor Regis Town Council.

Heather Perrott, the association's chairman, said: "You are never far from the past in eastern Germany.

"But our links of friendship, town to town and family to family, enjoy a

peaceful and understanding present and look forward to a bright future."

Trebbin is also twinned with the western Germany twin town of Bognor Regis, Weil am Rhein.

The twinning association members were joined for their visit this month by the town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds.

Activities during the stay included a tour of the Mercedes Benz factory in nearby Ludwigsfelde, where the Sprinter van is produced, a trip to Berlin and a tree canopy walk.

This was in the grounds of a ruined tuberculosis sanatorium, which contained the latest treatments in the 1920s.

But its location - near Beelitz - was the site of the last major battle for Berlin as the Second World War ended in 1945.

Bognor Regis is also twinned with Place St Maur in France.

Students get street wise STAYING focused on safety was the message of a workshop for Felpham Community College students.

The session for Year 7 pupils by Streetwise Theatre Company highlighted the importance of switching off mobile phones and headphones while they walk and cycle to and from lessons.

Emily Ingram, one of the students who attended the workshop, said: "The statistics on how many kids are in accidents at school travelling times are really scary. So, this reminded us of the importance of paying attention.

"As we aren't allowed our phones in school, it is tempting to turn it on as soon as we leave. But this reminded us that it is

safer to wait until we get home - and when I listen to music not to have it on too loud or just use one headphone so I can still hear what is going on around me."

The Streetwise actors remained in character after the production to reinforce the message technology should not be used on the move to enable people to concentrate on staying safe.

College curriculum leader for drama Nicola Coney said: "We have just started our third year of mobile phones and music devices being banned on the school site within the school day.

"The ban has been very successful, However, it is clear students are quite dependent on technology at other times."

Blooming good gardeners thanked for their work brightening up town KEW GARDENS in Bognor Regis has lived up to its world famous namesake.

The paradise of plants created in the road and neighbouring Runnymede Court has earned their gardening residents an award.

They scooped their latest award in the town's In Bloom competition. Their gold prize and trophy was given for this year's best neighbourhood.

The presentation at last week's awards ceremony closely followed the second place success residents achieved in the nationwide garden competition held by their housing association, Hanover.

One of the residents behind the successes, Diana Belward, 74, said: "There are 31 properties in our roads and we all do our own gardens. Everyone makes an effort and it looks absolutely lovely.

"We enjoy our gardening. We are very close knit - like a family. We all look out for one another."

One of her neighbours, Coral Hackett, 72, said: "It looks welcoming and friendly when you walk into our roads. On nice days, we all sit outside with each other."

Among the flowers which create their colourful displays are marigolds, roses and geraniums.

Solar lights also ensure the attraction of the area continues after dark.

The residents are fundraising for a summer house to enable them to get together when the weather is poor.

The youngest winner at the ceremony was five-year-oldTommy Morgan. He won the prize for the best garden looked after by a child up to the age of 11 by the end

of July.

Tommy just edged out his brother, Josh, 10, because his fruit and vegetable plot with marrows, runner beans, cauliflowers and strawberries needed more work than looking after flowers.

"I feel happy that I have won," said Tommy. "I enjoy planting the vegetables and it's exciting picking them when they have grown."

His mother, Kim Morgan, said: "I'm really proud of Tommy. He puts a lot of work into the garden. His nan's got a vegetable patch as well and there's a bit of competition between them."

A total of 10 awards were presented at the ceremony held by the Bognor Regis in Bloom working party, backed by the town council, on Thursday, at the Nyewood Lane football ground.

Town mayor Cllr Stephen Reynolds said: "We are celebrating a year of fantastic gardens and floral displays in our town, despite some challenging weather conditions.

"I'm grateful for the efforts everyone has put in to help to brighten up the town to make it look nicer for everyone."

In Bloom working party member Pat Dillon congratulated everyone for their efforts in the past 12 months.

"This has been a very difficult year. I know some of you are disappointed with the photos (of the gardens) that have been taken but I know how much hard work has gone into this competition.

The gardens might not look their best but they still look absolutely wonderful," he said.

` Poem help plea WORSHIPPERS at Middleton's parish church are seeking help for their special remembrance event.

They are staging a production called Who Adopted the Poppy First? and would like a woman who speaks in a French accent for their cast.

The event at St Nicholas Church will tell the poppy's story in film, verse and music. It will take place from 3.30pm-5.30pm on November 10 at the Elmer Road church. Entry will be free with donations to the Royal British Legion.

` Cake sale success A BIG thank you has been given to everyone who supported a charity cake sale at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

The organisers, Margaret Rapson and Susanna Haus, say £646.21 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support. As well as buying cakes, supporters baked them and also donated prizes for the tombola.

Margaret said: "I have been so overwhelmed by the generosity of all the staff and patients who supported the coffee morning."

Susanna said: "Macmillan is one of many worthwhile charities which is always in need of our support."

Pensions protest PENSIONLESS protesters from Bognor Regis stopped the traffic in central London.

The three members of Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) were among 1,000 or so who staged the rally and march in the capital.

They began at the Reformers Tree in Hyde Park and ended outside the Houses of Parliament as the women continued their fight against the rapid increase in their state pension age to 66.

One of those from Waspi's Chichester, Bognor and South Coast group who was involved was Helen Downes.

She said: "Following the rally we made our way to Parliament Square. This culminated in a lot of chanting outside the Houses of Parliament and singing our anthems accompanied by a woman playing a bongo.

"You can imagine the din from our whistle blowing, pot banging and horn squeezing. We had all taken something to make a noise."

"Spontaneity then took over. The traffic lights stopped the traffic and women piled into the road. There were women chained together - shouting and blowing their whistles.

"We were truly as one - sisters at arms.

It was very empowering. We held the traffic up for one-and-a-half hours."

The women were visited by several MPs during the sit-down. BBC newsreader Fiona Bruce had to resort to a police escort to get to Millbank studios.

The event last Wednesday mirrored the first official meeting of the Sufragettes.

Helen and another group member, Angie Taylor, dressed up Suffragettes.

They also carried photos of women who couldn't attend - because of ill-health, poverty or work - and six decorated

Waspi stones to commemorate others who were unable to be present.

As well as Waspi, several other groups fighting for better pensions took part.

I haven’t personally looked at the exact facts or science – I am sure I can check it on Google somewhere – however from my days at school I understand that temperature affects how materials react and move.

Only a tiny shift in the way your door hangs can lead to problems in opening and closing your door and ultimately can lead to breaking keys and breaking locks. You won’t believe the number of calls we get when the weather changes at certain points of the year.

So if you notice that your door is sticking or rubbing more than normal then I recommend that you get it looked at before the problem gets worse.

Realigning a door is a relatively simple and inexpensive job however the consequences of a broken lock or key are clearly more painful, inconvenient and more expensive.

Maintaining your doors and locks is really important and not to be overlooked. So at this time of year spend a few minutes and make sure your doors are working well. And, if you are not sure get someone qualified to check them for you.

ANOTHER PRO TIP - while we are on the subject of door and lock maintenance PLEASE never use WD40 to lubricate your door or locks. WD40 is not a lubricant and will do nothing but cause more problems than it solves.

Therefore as the cold weather approaches, do look after your doors and locks and if you think there is a problem call a recommended and trusted locksmith.

BICYCLES have been given to a Felpham school to ensure its pupils learn how to be safe in the saddle.

The five cycles were donated to Bishop Tufnell CE Primary School to celebrate the building of the cyclepath to Climping.

The 4.5km-long shared path with walkers along the A259 opened in August to provide a direct and sustainable link between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

While the work was ongoing, West Sussex County Council's contractor, Jackson Civil Engineering, worked with children at the school to highlight the importance of site safety and general health and safety.

This project ended with the cycles being presented to the Pennyfields school last Friday. They will be used for the county council-run Bikeability courses - formerly

called cycling proficiency, pictured above.

Pencil case bags and vouchers were also given to the winners of a poster design competition to promote road safety for vulnerable road users.

Richard Killean, Jackson's contracts manager, said: "It is with great pleasure that we donate these bikes to promote the use of the new cycleway and encourage the younger travelling public to choose a healthier form of transportation.

"We recognise the disruption construction work can cause. So, we'd like to thank the local community for their patience while this project was being built."

Cllr Roger Elkins, who is in charge of the council's highways work, said: "It's great to see a contractor getting involved in the community."

Invitation to have a ball for charity AN INVITATION has been issued to go dancing in Bognor Regis for good causes.

Dancing shoes should be dusted off for the big band spectacular in the town next month.

The exciting night of music is being staged to raise money for a range of community organisations in the area.

It has been organised by the Love Bognor Regis website with Rox Music & Arts, Mike's Music and 4Sight Vision Support to create a night to remember.

Providing live music will be the amazing Regis Big Band and Slim Jim and the Wildcards.

The event will start at 7pm on November 24 in Butlin's and will be a tribute to nearly 100 years of dance band and big band evolution.

There will be a dance floor for those who love to jive.

But the night is open to everyone who wants to support the worthwhile organisations which will benefit.

` Extra rooms plan MORE guests could stay at a popular Bognor Regis hotel.

Leisureplex Hotels has applied for permission to create another 11 rooms at the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

The company wants listed building consent from Arun District Council to carry out internal alterations to create the extra space.

A statement by the firm's planning agent, Steve Farrell, says: "The hotel is a very popular destination for the customers of Leisureplex and there is a desire to increase the bedroom provision, which currently stands at 68 following a similar conversion project in 2017/18."

It is hoped to carry out the work early next year.

The seafront hotel is a Grade IIlisted building dating from 18300.

Nik Demetriades, chief executive of 4Sight Vision Support, said he was looking forward to the occasion.

"It's going to be an amazing night wonderful live music, dancing 'all night long', great food and all for good causes that make such a difference to people's lives in Bognor Regis, Arun and West Sussex," he said.

Tickets cost from ÂŁ30 and buyers can choose which organisation they would like their ticket to support when they buy them.

There are tickets for tables and food and standing tickets, which do not include food.

Rox Music and Arts' joint founder Steve Goodheart said: "This has all the makings of a wonderful gig, with a mix of styles being performed by outstanding first class players from the south, with an evening of collaboration from some of the community's hardest working sectors - most of which don't get enough recognition."

FORMER professional grower Peter Barwick gave an expert's guide to growing soft fruits to Donningtaon Gardening Club.

He passed on his knowledge about how to get the best from strawberry and raspberry crops.

He also told how black, red and white currants should be grown to keep them free from pests and diseases.

Gooseberries and blueberries featured as well in his wideranging talk as well as blackberry, loganberry and tayberry.

The club's next meeting will be at 7.30pm on November 2 at Donnington Parish Hall. The guest speaker, Mike Read, will be speaking about wildlife photography.

Air Cadets hit heights on expedition to Peru TWO AIR Cadets from Chichester travelled thousands of miles for a once in a lifetime journey.

Cadet Sergeant Elyot Harmston and Cadet Corporal Jonty Parkin, both aged 16, were part of a selected group of 24 Air Cadets from around the county.

During their three-week expedition to Peru, they helped to construct a new building at an orphanage called Azul Wazi - translated as The Blue House.

Their reward for such hard work was a 75km expedition at heights of more than 4,500 metres during five days along the Salkantay trail to reach the famous remains at Machu Picchu.

The Incan citadel is situated in the Andes Mountains. It was built in the 15th century and later abandoned. Its exact use remains a mystery.

The unique part of the trip was the fact the cadets ran the entire expedition. Staff supported them in decision-making if their help was needed.

Cadet Sgt Harmston and Cadet Cpl Parkin had to be selected for the expedition and earned a place only after a gruelling selection process.

Once they had been chosen, they took part in military leadership training as well as training from the Edale Mountain Rescue Team in the Peak District.

Many of the cadets raised funds to go on the journey of 6,000 miles to South America. One even arranged crowd funding for new clothing and musical instruments to be bought for the 19

orphans who live at Azul Wasi.

Reflecting on the experience, Cadet Sgt Harmston, pictured near left, said: "Working on the orphanage had a big impact. I have done construction work like this before and it was interesting to see the different building methods.

"However, seeing what a huge impact our work would make to the orphans and orphanage was really eye opening for me."

Among the staff on the pair's journey was one of the officers from their squadron.

Flying Officer Richard Foster said it had been a privilege to be involved in giving them the opportunity to take part in such an experience.

"To see how they overcame various obstacles and challenges, and to help them to cope with them, was really rewarding and it was a privilege to be a part of their journey," he said.

"I was lucky to have taken part in a similiar trip at their age, and it changed and shaped my life for the better. I hope it does the same for them."

Chichester Air Cadets is recruiting 12-17-year-olds in the area.

Overseas expeditions are one of the many activities that the cadets can take part in, including the Duke of Edinburgh's bronze, silver and gold medals, visiting RAF stations and adventure training.

Ornamental grasses can be used to great effect in the garden and are perfect plants for containers. They can provide a calming effect or a more dynamic focus to specific areas of your outdoor living space.

Growing grasses in pots combines the beauty and versatility of ornamental plants with the freedom of container gardening, which means you can move them around according to the seasons or personal preference. Most ornamental grasses adapt really well to container

culture and some are actually easier and more practical to grow in pots as it keeps them under control.

Use loam-based compost such as John Innes No 2 with 20 percent loam-free compost to lighten the mix. Select good-sized pots to suit maturing plants, and remember to feed and water and to pot the plants into bigger pots when their roots have filled the pot. They do not need much feeding though, one application of a balanced fertiliser in spring is adequate. The up-side of ornamental grasses is that they are relatively low maintenance and generally

Carex, a tuft forming evergreen perennial that is very tough and contemporary and look good all winter. Try Carex ‘Milk Chocolate’ - a richly coloured variety that slowly forms a dense mound. It has dark purple and brown slender foliage with delicate pink edges that turn into autumnal shades of orange and brown as winter approaches, growing to a height of 60cm.

Stipa tenuissima, also known as Mexican Feathergrass, is hardy and fast growing producing a frothing cascade of yellow flowers. An elegant grass with fine, gently arching leaves. Feathery plumes of flowers emerge from June to September and mature to a soft golden brown in winter. It can grow up to 100cm.

Festuca glauca is a tufted evergreen grass forming a tactile mound of thin blue-green leaves.. Summertime brings buff coloured feathery flower stems that rise above the foliage and move gently in the breeze. A really versatile plant that reaches a height of around 40cm and adds year round colour and texture to any container garden.

Celebrations on cycle route CYCLISTS will be staging special rides this weekend along the recently opened A259 route from Flansham to Climping.

Bognor Cycle Forum members are holding the events on Sunday to celebrate the route which bridges a major gap in safer cycling along the West Sussex coast.

The organised rides will start from near the cycle racks at the Hotham Park cafe in Bognor Regis at 9.30am, 10.15am and 11am and from the Bognor Regis side of the Littlehampton footbridge at 10am and 11.15am.

The easy rides have been designed by the forum, Cycle Bognor and the University of the Third Age (U3A) for those new to organised rides. They will take cyclists on quiet roads and paths to join the cycleway.

Cyclists can join return journeys or pedal their own way home.

The rides could take up an hour in each direction with a brief stop at the new rest area close to Comet's Corner and provided by the cycleway's builder, Jacksons.

Forum member Dave Barton said: "We want

to create an opportunity for local residents to fully enjoy this new path and appreciate the better cycling links between the two towns.

"The previous safe route through Yapton was considerably longer and indirect. We hope the various cafes and pubs along and close to this route will benefit from the emerging cycle trade."

As reported, the ÂŁ2m cycleway was officially opened by West Sussex County Council in August. But the finishing touches were still being put on its 4.5km route.

Members of the cycle forum will be at the rest area to meet anyone cycling through on Sunday morning.

Dr Bike will help with minor servicing of bikes. Representatives of national cycling charities, Sustrans and Cycling UK, will also be present.

The U3A's Chris Cooper said: "We have three active local cycling groups who are already benefiting from this cycleway. We look forward to welcoming new residents to our mature cycling community.

` Bus views sought PASSENGERS on several bus services around Chichester and Bognor Regis have been asked for their opinions.

West Sussex County Council wants to know how they will be affected by any changes to the routes which it supports.

The services include Stagecoach 46 and 47 around Chichester and the 56 to Old Bosham.

They also feature the numbers 66/66A from Bognor Regis to Walberton, 67 around Bognor Regis, 71 Chichester to Storrington, 85/85A Chichester to Arundel and 99 between Chichester and Petworth.

More than 50 routes across the county are coming under scrutiny from the council. Its cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, Cllr Roger Elkins, said the latest survey followed a successful consultation which attracted thousands of responses.

"Now we would like to know more about how people use our supported bus routes," he said.

The review does not affect routes such as the 600 and 700 which are run without a subsidy.

Choir on song for its concerts in Poland f Nick Gibb with the library manager, Pam O'Brien

MP views town's library in action LIFE at Bognor Regis Library has been seen by the town's MP. Nick Gibb took the chance to meet the library's manager, Pam O'Brien, for a tour of the London Road facility.

His visit took place during last week's national libraries week.

As well as meeting staff and seeing the public part of the library, he also saw work that goes on behind the scenes and first floor meeting rooms which are available to hire.

Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "It was a pleasuree to meet the manager and staff of our first class

Four other choirs - from Slovakia, Italy, Romania and Russia - also took part.

Each choir was asked to sing two songs that represented religion. For the RAFA choir, they were the German 15th or 16th century song Kyrie Eleison and Steal Away, a gospel song by Stroman and Scott.

Sue Coyne, the choir's co-ordinator, said: "All five choirs sounded very different and the acoustics were amazing."

The choir's next performance was open to the public at the Museum Sztuki i Techniki Japonskiej Manggha.

"Each choir had the opportunity to perform their own repertoire during a 30-minute performance, " said Sue. "We performed popular songs that everyone knew and the audience, including the other choirs, all joined in.

It was so well received we got a standing ovation.

"This was a great opportunity to hear choirs from other parts of the world and a privilege to represent the RAF Association at an international event like this.

"The choir is looking forward to travelling to another country in the not too distant future."

The next public performance for the choir will be at Four Choirs in Concert from 3pm-5.30pm on November 17 at Aldwick Baptist Church in Gossamer Lane.

The concert is being organised by the choir. It will feature a variety of music sung in different ways by the choirs.

Managing diabetes with a new lifestyle DIABETES is a hard train to stop, but do not treat it as impossible. As many as half the people in the world are potentially genetically predisposed to develop type 2 diabetes, however, you don’t have to be a victim of your genes and your body will respond to what you give it. That old saying ‘you are what you eat’ is so true.

Many studies have shown that if you’re overweight or obese, losing weight, even as little as five per cent of your body weight can dramatically improve your insulin sensitivity and help to keep your blood sugar under control. In one recent British clinical trial, people with type 2 diabetes followed a very strict diet for two months.

They ate low-carb veggies and no-calorie beverages to keep daily calories under 700.

The average weight loss was about 30 pounds.

Nearly half of them had a remission of their disease, meaning, no more diabetes at that time. In this study, remission lasted even after participants had switched to a normal, healthy diet for the remaining six months of

the study.

In fact, three of those who went into remission had had diabetes for more than eight years. Those who maintained their weight loss were most likely to also have maintained their remission. It’s a short-term study, but it shows what may be possible, even avoiding health complications by controlling your blood sugar levels through lifestyle, medication or both.

Everyone can help themselves do something about weight management and levels of daily physical activity. This will go a long way towards preventing or at least delaying the progression of the disease. Aerobic exercise helps your body use insulin better and the recommended amount is 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise per day.

In simple terms, you should be exercising hard enough to be able to talk but not sing. If you can do at least five days a week you are going to notice a difference in how you feel.

The bottom line is that even if you don’t reverse your diabetes, these healthy lifestyle changes can help you avoid the many complications of the disease. And if you are successful and can go off diabetes medications, then a big congratulations to you! You’ll want to keep up that good work for the rest of your long, healthier life so as not to slip back down that slippery slope.

One question I get asked all the time is can I eat fruit if I have diabetes? Some fruits do, indeed, have a high sugar content, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up this healthy habit. Fruits are low in fat and rich in phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and fibre—and in moderation (two or three servings daily), they can be safely consumed by people with diabetes. One general way to choose fruits is by using the glycemic index, which measures how a food increases blood sugar (the lower the number, the less likely a food is to spike blood sugar). Choose lowto-mid-GI fruits such as cherries (22), plums (24), grapefruit (25) and bananas (47). A high-GI fruit is anything over 60, such as watermelon (72) and raisins (64), and should be limited you have diabetes.

However, even with higher-GI fruit, eating it along with other foods also can prevent a spike in blood sugar. Combining fruit with low-GI foods, such as a slice of whole-grain bread or oats, may prevent the blood sugar spike that comes with eating a high-GI fruit.

Be careful, too, with your serving size. Onehalf cup of most fruits counts as one serving.

Whats the difference between type 1 and type 2?

Type 1 diabetes, also called latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), is

a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. With this disorder, the body’s own immune system destroys the insulinproducing cells of the pancreas. As a result, the body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin to control blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes is characterised by insulin resistance—the body responds to insulin inefficiently and fails to keep blood sugar at a normal level. The vast majority of people with diabetes have type 2.

A person who shows attributes of both type 1 and type 2 is said to have type 1.5 diabetes.

What initially appeared to be type 2 diabetes, because the pancreas is still able to produce a small amount of insulin, is actually slowly evolving type 1 diabetes.

Type 1.5 diabetes typically shows up at an older age, over age 30, than when type 1 diabetes is diagnosed. Type 1.5 is diagnosed through a blood test for antibodies.

My first recommendation is to realise that any supplement (or drug) should be used in addition to dietary and lifestyle strategies to improve blood sugar control. Foremost is eating a diet that has a low glycemic content which means that it is low in carbohydrate sources that can raise blood sugar levels.

Foods low in glycemic load include most fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, beans and whole grains. No drug or dietary supplement is going to be effective in the long run unless it is part of a plan that includes a low-glycemicload diet and a truck load of exercise. If you want to stay fit and healthy, your lifestyle choices are very important.

French wine was on top of that from Down Under Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com EVERY little bit helps, apparently, so off to Tesco’s I did go and decided to look at price differentials to see whether a few extra pounds expended pay the appropriate dividend taste wise.

I opted to examine the merits of three whites and three reds with a Prosecco thrown in for good measure!

Commencing with whites, I homed in on a curiously inexpensive Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in the form of a 2017 Wairau Cove Sauvignon Blanc currently on offer for a mere £6.

Two facts came to mind, namely that New Zealand wines are not known for discounting heavily and, furthermore, New Zealand wines generally command a higher average bottle price than any other country’s wine and are thus a trusted brand.

The Wairau Cove wine has a strong elderflower taste with punchy grapefruit on the palate, but no discernible fresh zing and a tad watery, à mon avis!

I now felt the need to investigate further this wine with one clue being in the wine’s name - Wairau Cove is neither a winery or a place, but even more significant was a cursory glance at the back of the bottle enabling me

to ascertain that this wine had been imported and bottled in the UK. The detective in me has to conclude that this all smacks of bulk wine - wine sold off in liquid mass by co-operatives and wineries which do not wish to bottle it themselves.

Inferior fruit, one might surmise, so I am going to stick to The Ned, Sacred Hill, Oyster Bay and Villa Maria for my New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc!

For just an outlay of a further 50 pence, the 2017 Tesco finest Côtes De Gascogne beckoned as the south-west of France is a slightly underrated wine region.

Cooking apple and lemon character, a touch of lime and notes of wild herbs with hints of stone fruits on the finish, this wine is perfectly palatable and good value.

My final white wine selection for the lofty sum of £9 was a 2017 La Burgondie Bourgogne Aligoté - historically, this ancient Burgundian variety was used almost exclusively for making Kir. These days, it is more mainstream and the limestone and marl soils give the wine an attractive mineral edge.

An unoaked wine with fruity acidity and a saline finish which pairs delightfully with seafood or oysters and any white meats, but truly divine with Crottin de Chavignol!

A Burgundian pleasure without breaking the bank - one well worth a punt! And now for my Prosecco choice, the Plaza Centro Prosecco currently on offer for just six readies!

Very pale in colour and sporting fine bubbles, this sparkler has green apple and pear aromas and is dry and crisp with light apple and lemon zest

flavours.

Refreshing, great value for money and undoubtedly a great apéritif, this little number is eminently quaffable and one which fully merits your consideration My three red choices involve two Malbecs and one Rioja Reserva. For just £6.50, I was able to procure a 2015 Anakena Enco Reserva Malbec from Chile's Valle Central. Black fruit and plums abound with hints of pepper and dark chocolate and this wine is worth a go at this price!

I next turned to a 2015 Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec, more of a Rolls Royce compared to usual Trivento wines

available here and on offer for £12.

Eh bien, the extra money expended on this gem is money truly well spent!

Complex, powerful and fruit forward with dark chocolate on the nose, a mélange of plum, black cherry, mocha and leather with plush tannins and a velvety finish, this wine benefits from aerating or decanting in order to open up fully.

Silky smooth with juicy black fruit and hints of liquorice, it is reminiscent of a classy Catena Malbec and one which would perfectly accompany either lasagne or steak - a full-bodied wine to

savour!

My final red selection was that of a Tesco finest 2014 Viña Del Cura Rioja Reserva on offer at £8.50, sporting blackberry pie on the nose, vanilla notes and oaky lightish tannins with pepper and spice on the aftertaste and one to pair with either lamb or beef.

A good medium-bodied wine justifying its price tag!

Conclusion - sometimes you get what you pay for and maybe that extra pecuniary outlay is generally worthwhile - more wine for your buck given the tax situation - happy imbibing!

Community News & Views A TRIO of recently retired opera singers brought their experience to help Bognor Regis Rotary Club raise funds.

The appearance of Glenys Groves - soprano, Michael Lessiter - bass baritone and Scilla Stewart - pianist and mezzo soprano, pictured below, entertained the rapt near capacity audience with a selection of songs from the shows.

Spring is Here, Ruddigore, Porgy & Bess, South Pacific and Brigadoon were among their repertoire. Numerous composers were also featured, such as Rodgers, Mozart, Sullivan, Novello and Gershwin.

A section devoted to the end of the First World War engaged the audience in a journey down memory lane. Some short, but amusing, songs included a more recent version of Maud, to gave the audience an opportunity to endulge themselves in a slice of slapstick comedy.

The outcome of the memorable night, held in the hall of the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road, Bognor Regis, last Saturday saw more than £700 raised for the Rotarians' community work.

The artistes each have impressive careers. All were members of the Royal Opera House in London and have performed with the world's leading opera singers.

Names that appear on their CVS include Dame Joan Sutherland, Pavarotti and Marilyn Horne.

They have toured with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, Dublin Grand Opera Company and Netherlands Opera.

Each of the singers introduced themselves and gave a descriptive and, sometimes, amusing resumes of the music they were singing.

Rotary club press officer Peter Stemp said: "There were the smiles on the faces of the audience as they left and comments like why more nights like this did not take place."

The artistes and a trustee of the school of music, Sasha Levtov, waived their usual charges to support the Rotary club.

WATER-BASED sports across coastal West Sussex are to benefit from a £170,000 grant.

The money has been awarded to boost businesses for sports such as sailing, kayaking and kitesurfing to enable them to grow, flourish and create jobs.

The grant is towards a £340,000 project to position the West Sussex coast as an active hub for them.

It has been awarded to the Coastal West Sussex Partnership from the government's coastal communities fund and will pay for a much-needed marketing campaign to promote water sports in the region.

This is intended to grow the market, attract more visitors and extend the visitor season as well as the length of stay for visitors.

Caroline Wood, a director of the partnership, said: "We're over the moon to have been awarded this grant. We want to work with all relevant businesses to help put the West Sussex coast on the water sports map.

"We have an incredible variety of water sports locally, from diving in Littlehampton to kayaking in Pagham to kitesurfing in Goring Gap. "Our stunning coastline has plenty to offer both seasoned athletes and total beginners alike and many of the businesses also cater to families."

All water sports businesses along the coast in West Sussex have the chance to be involved in the campaign.

Four times British champion kite surfer and Worthing resident Lewis Crathern said: "I'm extremely happy that the West Sussex area has received this grant.

"Having grown up here by the coast, I have seen water sports develop at a rapid pace and I am proud to call it my base for my profession of kitesurfing.

"I look forward to this collaboration and to further spreading the message that our area is world class location for water sports."

Proceeds from his performance at 7pm tomorrow in the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road will go to The Amber Trust. This helps blind and partially sighted children across the UK who have a talent or love for music.

Derek has been making music since he was two. He shot to fame at the age of nine when he played jazz with the Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London.

Numerous national and regional TV appearances followed in the UK and overseas. In the past few years, Derek featured in the series, Extraordinary People, on Channel 5 and on BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. He has also given concerts across England, Europe and the USA. Chris Coote, the club's press officer, said: "There is no doubt that Derek is one of the

Sir, Sorry to be thick here, but could someone please explain why it is that we should be delighted by the thought of 1,400 new jobs being generated by the Southern Gateway re-development, pictured below, most of which (despite Cllr Dignum’s faith in them being ‘highly paid’ will surely be the same-old hospitality jobs that can’t be filled elsewhere in town, given that the plans emphasise new pubs, bars and cafes for the area)?

How does this fit in with the comments made by the owner of Opus Loco in the same edition of the Post that her recruitment business is under threat due to the acute shortage of applicants?

Even if every adult in the 365 proposed new homes takes one of the jobs, this will still leave a shortfall of almost 700 people, most of whom, if they are available at all, will doubtless drive to work, get caught in the endless jams along the A27 and the Stockbridge Road and find nowhere in which to park when they get there.

Or is it more about Cllr Dignum’s quest to achieve the holy grail of endless ‘economic development’ by planning to strip the area of every inch of open space in order to build more housing?

A CHANCE to find out more about the HM coastguard helicopter seen flying along the coastline is available next Monday.

One of its pilots, Eadin Brown, will be giving the latest talk to the Arun and Chichester Air Enthusiasts Society, Air Aces. This will take place at 7pm at the Chichester Park Hotel in Chichester.

Eadin will introudce the HM Coastguard helicopter unit, which is based at Lee-on-the-Solent, and he ended up working for it.

He will continue by giving a broad outline of how the helicopter search and rescue service operates.

This will include the unit, the base, the roles of the crew and the aircraft. He will also give an idea of the routine of a typical day and the tasks the crew undertake.

His talk will be illustrated with plenty of photographs to provide a lot of interest for anyone curious about the story behind the headline-making rescues.

Entrance for Air Aces members is £3, guests £5 and free for under-16s. Tickets are available on the night. There is no need to pre-book. Doors open at 6.45pm.

Town has a long history of Royal visitors Many memvers of the family have helped the town live up to its Regis name IN 1911, Princess Marina, aged five, stayed with her sisters, Olga and Elizabeth, in Bognor with their English governess.

They were to stay in Sidlaw Terrace. Princess Marina was to again visit the town when she came to inspect St John’s church in 1943.

Within two years she was to seek a place for her three children to recover from measles, and because of her memories she sent them to Bognor Regis.

The Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael stayed at the Carlton Hotel, with their French governess, with their mother, Princess Marina, visiting them at weekends.

Princess Alexandra has kept up her association with the town and been willing to return for various events over the years.

In July, 1968, Princess Alexandra came to Bognor Regis in her role as patron of Action for Blind People, when she opened the Russell Hotel for the Blind & Partially Sighted.

She returned in 1993 to celebrate the 25th

anniversary.

In 1929, while George V was recuperating at Craigweil House, his grand-daughter, Elizabeth, joined him and Queen Mary for a holiday by the sea.

He was four years old and many photographs appeared in newspapers at the time, showing her making sandcastles.

Marion Crawford, the royal governess, wrote “The Little Princesses” and recounted:“It was wonderful to see them together, the bearded old man and the polite little girl holding on to one of his fingers.

"When he was so ill, part of the tonic his doctors recommended for his convalescence was her presence.

"She went down to join him in Bognor. It was the first time she had ever been to the sea.

She used to play on the sand while the old King sat in the sunshine watching her.”

It was also reported that Queen Mary went to Burgess’s Bazaar in Waterloo Square to buy sand moulds for the little princess.

In 1929 whilst George V was recuperating at Craigweil House, his grandaughter Elizabeth joined him and Queen Mary for a holiday by the sea.

When King George V returned to Windsor, Sir Arthur Du Cros handed Craigweil House over to Bognor Town Council for a period of 12 days to allow members of the public to visit the house.

During this period, 15,827 people roamed throughout the house, visited the King’s bedroom, sat in his chair and viewed the sandcastle built by his grand-daughter in the grounds. His grand-daughter is now Queen Elizabeth II. In 1964, an application was received by the Bognor Regis Council to have one of the houses converted into a nursing home.

Their response: “It would be quite wrong to have a nursing home at Craigweil.” How quickly times change.

In 1966, Princess Margaret was to continue the trend and sent her two children, Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Armstrong Jones, to the seaside to enjoy the thrill of making

sandcastles.

Two years later, Princess Margaret was again to visit the town and be given a tour of the resort by town councillors.

She was also shown how holidaymakers were enjoying their seaside excursions with a tour of the Butlins holiday camp, which had only been recently opened in 1960.

Princess Charlotte, Princess Victoria and Princess Elizabeth all had their historical place in relation to the throne when they holidayed in Bognor.

I am sure that over the years there have been visits by other young royals, which were not recorded. It is possible that Prince William and Prince Harry visited Bognor Regis when their grandfather Earl Spencer owned Tradewinds on the Aldwick Bay Estate.

Of course, recently we have had a brief visit from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Youngsters all smiles after dozens PostSport try out tag rugby for the first time THE FUTURE of rugby looks bright on the south coast as dozens of youngsters had their first competitive taste of the sport in friendly surroundings.

The West Sussex West School Sport Partnership (WSW SSP) was behind two high quality tag rugby festivals which saw 120 children take part. The first event took place at Bognor Rugby Club for Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. The second was at Chichester Rugby Club for Years 5 and 6.

Both events were very well attended and involved mixed school groups having an hour of skills and drills led by Year 8 and 9 sports leaders from The Regis School.

The sessions had only two goals - having fun and improving tag rugby ability. Both goals were achieved with flying colours.

The children gave a thumbs up/down at the start of each event at their confidence in playing the game and did the same at the end with an impressive 100 per cent thumbs up by the end of both events.

Following training, the children had the chance to experience some matches.

Although Year 3/4 took a little while, by the end there were some fantastic tries scored.

The Year 5/6 matches took a keen competitive edge straight away, showing some exceptionally high standards. The teachers were very impressed with the progress the children had made.

WSW SSP manager Sean O’Connor said: “These two events could not have taken place without the Regis School sports leaders who did an exceptional job and made The Regis School proud. I hope the children not already playing now look at accessing rugby after school at either club, as we try to promote our local club pathways”.

Schools in attendance were: Bersted Green, Bosham, Edward Bryant, North Mundham, Sidlesham, Southway, St Mary’s; Eastergate, Walberton and Binsted, West Dean and Westbourne. *Bognor under-17s continue to make progress on the pitch under the guidance of coach Tom Spurle after an impressive 55-19 victory away at Lewes.

Cellan Robinson scored a hat-trick and Misho Atanavos a brace in the nine try rout.

Harry Joyce, Luke Marsh, Oscar Henson and Lewis Decarteret also crossed. Next up is a trip to Farnborough Colts on Sunday (12pm).

DARTS: Gary English stole the headlines in week two of the Bognor Double In Double Out Darts League after he fired a ton-plus in shot and out shot in the same leg.

The Cabin player fired a 100 opener before rounding off with a 110 as he wrapped up the leg in just 18 darts.

It contributed towards a 24.67 per dart average for English as he was named the star performer of the week.

But the individual effort was in vain as his side suffered a 14-7 reverse to Legends A. Here are the results in full from week two of the competition:

Dragonflyers duo in 'sensational' show

DRAGONFLYERS duo Izzy Hauxwell and Sofija Kalnicenko have been inspired to go for gold after meeting one of their idols at the national trampoline finals.

After competing against the best that England has to offer, the girls spent time with GB star Bryony Page, who won the UK's first Olympic medal in the sport.

It was a highlight of an excellent weekend for English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Both girls were among the top 16 qualifying performers in their categories in what coach Linda O'Leary described as "an awesome achievement".

Sofija took on the country's very best 13 to 14-year-old females in her competition.

Despite two very nervous routines, her performance included a 9.4 difficulty voluntary routine where six out of ten moves were doubles with and without twists.

It gained her a sensational ninth place as the Bognor-based trampolinist narrowly missed out on the top eight jump off for medals by a

mere 0.025.

Speaking afterwards about Sofija's performance, O'Leary said it was 'a very proud moment'.

Hauxwell also excelled, jumping just one category below in the 15 to 16 girls event.

Her 7,6 difficulty and precision got her into the medal jump off where she finished a superb sixth position.

O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are ecstatic about the girls' achievement.

"A tiny Regis School-based term time club with limited training hours took on the mighty giants of the trampoline circuit and shone amongst the stars."

Next up for the girls is the DWH International, where they will jump world age routines alongside three other flyers.

The duo will then head the following week to Sheffield yet again for the League One National Finals where they qualified in the top 16 at the very top level.

RUGBY: Chichester RFC return to action tomorrow with a crunch local derby against high-flying Brighton.

The Blues are languishing towards the bottom of London South One as injuries have hampered progress at Oaklands Park.

So far, coach Scott Ashley has used 39 players in just six weeks.

After a fortnight off, Chi have had a chance to rest up and will be raring to go when they head along the coast tomorrow (3pm).

Blues lost to fellow strugglers Dartfordians last time out, securing a losing bonus point in a 17-11 home defeat. Brighton, meanwhile, are second, with five wins from their opening six matches.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor have their first match in two weeks when they welcome Gosport & Fareham IIs to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (TBC).

Finals far from Chi's thoughts as boss Smith calls for focus

City look to bounce back TABLE-TOPPING Chichester City will be looking to make a swift return to winning ways after falling to take advantage of a prime opportunity to open up a four-point gap.

The Oaklands Park side have been in fine form so far this season spending much of it at the summit of the SCFL Premier.

But, in front of a bumper crowd of more than 150 last weekend, City suffered a 2-1 loss to Eastbourne Town.

Two George Taggart goals, one either side of the break, were enough to seal a smash and grab win for the visitors.

A late overhead kick from Connor Cody gave Miles Rutherford's side hope.

But they were unable to add to their tally and take anything from the match.

With their nearest challengers in FA Vase action, Chi know they missed an opportunity to open up a gap on their rivals.

Before that loss, Miles Rutherford's side had won eight of their past nine matches in all competitions.

As it is they are just one point clear but have played a match more than Horsham YMCA in second and Pagham in third.

Chi will look to get back to winning ways tomorrow when they head to AFC Uckfield Town in the league (3pm).

The hosts are sitting in mid-table and will be full of confidence after a 2-0 away win at Tunbridge Wells in the FA Vase first round.

It means Chi will need to show more of the grit and determination that they displayed in the midweek Peter Bentley Cup match at Pagham.

With the match ending goalless, it was City who took the spoils winning 6-5 on penalties in front of a partisan crowd at Nyetimber Lane.

City face a trip to SCFL Division One side Mile Oak in the fourth round of the competition.

With matches in the FA Vase second round - a home tie against Hellenic Premier side Windsor - and Sussex Senior Cup second round - away at Hailsham Town - the next month or so will be a busy one for City.

String some results together, though, and it could be the start of a special season at Oaklands Park.

Silverware?

CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is playing down his side's bid for silverware and urging them to focus on picking up points in the league as their good start to the season rolls on.

The Oaklands Park outfit are now into the last 16 of the FA Women's League Cup with a 2-0 away win at Billericay Ladies last weekend.

Goals from Molly Clark and a right foot finish from Holy Wride sealed the victory for Chi on the road against spirited opposition.

But, rather than look to a possible final, Smith urged his team to focus on more immediate matters - starting this weekend when they head to west London to play QPR in the National South on Sunday (2pm).

Speaking after the win in Essex, Smith said: "We are not looking that far ahead [to the final]. We have a game at QPR and it may be cliche but that's what I'm looking at.

"At the top of the league, everyone is playing each other and taking points off each other.

Last year in the games like QPR we would have dropped points and we don't want that to happen this season."

City have lost just once all season and sit fourth in the table, four points off top spot.

Sids' cup run comes to an end

SIDLESHAM players have been praised after the club's FA Vase run came to a crushing end.

Steve Bailey's SCFL Division One side have saved some of their best performances of the season for the national non-league knockout cup.

But, after two excellent wins against higher ranked opponents, the Sids were finally eliminated from the contest by Southern Counties East Premier side Chatham Town last weekend.

Bailey's side put in a strong performance against the free-scoring visitors and were

unlucky to be defeated 2-0.

Writing afterwards on the club's Twitter page, it said: "Great effort today, going down 2-0 to Chatham. On another day it may have been different. But officials are paid to make decisions, even if they are the wrong ones!"

The hope from those at the Recreation Ground is that the club can use the cup run as a springboard for the rest of the season.

The opening three months back at step five has delivered much promise. But a poor run of late has seen Sids slip to mid-table.

With Seaford Town visiting tomorrow

(3pm), three points would put them back on course.

One side that had better fortune in the FA Vase was Pagham who cruised into the second round with a 4-2 win away at Combined Counties Premier side Hanworth Villa.

Andy Chick, Callum Overton (2) and George Gaskin scored in the comfortable away win.

Next up for the Lions in the Vase is a home match against fellow SCFL Premier side Peacehaven.

Before then, they must travel to Surrey tomorrow to play Lingfield in the league (3pm) and will be keen to bounce back from a midweek penalties loss to Chichester City in the Peter Bentley Cup. In SCFL Division One, Selsey travel to fourth-bottom Mile Oak (3pm) looking to build on their best result of the season so far.

Blues, who are eighth in the league, defeated Billingshurst 6-0 last weekend thanks to strikes from Ryan Morey (2), Tom Jefkins (2), John Phillips and an OG. In SCFL Division Two, Bosham's woes continue.

The Walton Lane side were hammered 7-0 on the road at Rustington last weekend in the first round of the division two trophy.

It means the Robins are without a win in five in all competitions.

They will look to resolve that tomorrow when they welcome league new boys Brighton Electricity to the Lane tomorrow (3pm).

Bognor quartet in cross-country bow BOGNOR Tone Zone members dipped their toes into a whole new type of running event as a team of four made their cross country debut.

After several years of the club being out of the muddy countryside, Peter Lee, Jack Penfold, Byron Kearns and Simon Gill returned to fly the flag in the Chichester Cross Country Relay, which is part of the Sussex Championship.

The course was challenging, with steep hills coming thick and fast over the 4,000 metres.

Peter Lee set off on leg one for the team and came back to complete his lap in 15:04 before handing over to Jack Penfold, who also ran a 15:04 time.

Byron Kearns took charge for the third lap and continued his fine form for the club

finishing in 15:30 before handing over to Simon Gill, who despite being struck down by man flu still finished in 14:03.

All four runners enjoyed the new testing experience and will be hoping to enter more cross country events.

A number of Tone Zone runners were in action elsewhere this week.

Taking part in the Cranborne Chase Ultra Marathon was Joan Woolley who finished under the 8 hour mark in 7:56.

Further away from home, and in completely the opposite conditions in Mallorca, were Mark Williamson, Jackie Williamson and Andy Miles. Mark ran the Palma marathon finishing in 4:24. Jackie and Andy ran the half marathon together to both finish in 2:13.

Rocks boss proud of youthful side despite first league loss Next Game

MARGATE (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

IT WAS the best of weeks and the worst of weeks for Bognor.

After registering their first away win of the season at Bostik Premier leaders Tonbridge Angels on Saturday, Rocks suffered their first league defeat, losing 4-2 at home to Folkestone Invicta.

It was four days which sums up football as this level - where anyone can beat anyone and nothing should be taken for granted.

After two hard fought games, Bognor were exactly where they started the week, in third position in the league.

But the win at Longmead against a strong Tonbridge side in front of more than 800 fans means that they are now just two points off top spot.

With a home match against sixth-placed Margate tomorrow (3pm), Bognor have the perfect opportunity to get back on track with three points against in-form opponents.

Then there is a long midweek trip to Bostik One South East side Hythe Town in the Velocity Trophy on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Rocks will take heart from the win at Tonbridge last weekend.

Jack Pearce's young side, which included 17-year-old centre back Joe Dandy making his debut after signing from Portsmouth, controlled the match.

Another Fratton Park loanee, Brad Lethbridge, gave Bognor the lead. After being

pegged back, Mason Walsh hit home an injury time winner with a 25-yard daisy cutter.

Speaking after the Tonbridge win, manager Pearce said: "Goals change games and over 90 minutes no one could complain that we were better side.

"We created more chances than them but the way the game went they were always in it.

"Our attitude was good, our pace of the game good, trying to pass the ball well "When you think of number of young players in this team, we should be really proud."

It was, perhaps, this naivety of youth that was evident on Tuesday against Folkestone.

After falling behind early on, Rocks hit back when Jimmy Muitt tapped home from close range.

But two mistakes before half time saw Bognor concede two very soft goals. Then, in the second period, Dan Lincoln picked up a pass back which led to a free-kick and a fourth for the visitors.

Tommy Scutt got one back for Rocks. But despite late pressure and the introduction of re-signed striker Jimmy Wild, Bognor were condemned to their first league loss of the season.

Pearce said: "Being so young means mistakes will be made but it's how you respond to mistakes and I thought our response was fantastic. We stuck to our guns and ultimately got what I think we deserved."

Calvin eyes return to the pros HE has been one of Bognor's stand-out players in recent seasons, with a string of eyecatching performances which are turning the heads of visiting scouts.

But, despite his own ambition of a return to professional football, Calvin Davies said he remains committed to helping the Rocks surge up the Bostik Premier table.

The 21-year-old, who came through the ranks at League One Portsmouth, has shown his worth at non-league level.

His composed ability on the ball and capacity to make lung-busting runs from right back have made him an invaluable asset in Jack Pearce's side.

Despite a short spell at Yeovil and links with Bristol City Under 23s, Davies remains at the Nye Camp - and he is happy to keep on focusing on the immediate future with Rocks.

He said: "I'm not chasing it. If I can play well every week and help the cause that is all I can do, and I am happy to do that.”

He added: "We're a young team and we don't have any fear when we're playing and that is essential.

"We've started well and hope to continue with that winning mentality after the disappointment of relegation last season."

FOOTBALL has a habit of serving up plenty of ups and downs - and Rocks fans certainly experienced those in the last week!

We have finally got our first away win out of the way with a nice 2-1 result against Tonbridge Angels at Longmead.

We headed there, having not had great results in the past, in front of over 800 fans on Non League Day. I thought after the first five minutes we really created some decent chances but had to wait until the restart to see us take the lead.

A neat move down the left saw Mason Walsh use his pace before crossing the ball into the area for Bradley Lethbridge to neatly convert it beyond the goalkeeper.

But an impressive Adem Ramadan was causing havoc down the other end of the field for the Angels and he was involved in the build-up as Bognor let Alex Read through to score.

But, after a lengthy spell with their goalkeeper down and eventually being stretchered off and replaced, a massive eight minutes were added on to the end of the match.

It looked like it was set to be another draw on the road, but Rocks pounced at the right time and Walsh netted a great goal in the 92nd minute to send Rocks fans home happy.

I was just pleased that we had finally won away from home this season.

The support was terrific in this first versus third tie, and it has to be said our fans out-sung the home side all afternoon.

I must say the £5 entrance fee went down well with the fans.

I was just glad our coach got there on time - before 2.15pm when the deal ended!

It was really like watching a different side on Tuesday night at home to Folkestone Invicta.

Mistakes at the back cost us here and some clinical

finishing from the Seasiders saw us lose 4-2. Our first loss at home this season and our first overall in league action.

For me, we missed some decent chances in the first half and this ultimately cost us against a relatively lively Invicta side.

It was a bit miserable driving home after such a bad night under the lights at Nyewood Lane. It was certainly a game to forget for the fans and players.

Despite this, we still remain in third position and the players will look ahead to Saturday’s home game against Margate.

As we saw at Tonbridge, we know this young team can really beat anyone in this division. But at present we are hampered by injuries to players in key positions.

Dan Smith is the biggest blow, not to mention two key defenders in Keaton Wood and Corey Heath on the sidelines for a while.

However, I've been impressed by the performances of Joe Dandy, who has stepped in at centre half, and Joe Tomlinson has really slotted into the side well.

Mason Walsh, for me, has been a refreshing addition to the side on the left wing.

His pace allows us to get on the counter quickly and this proved influential at Tonbridge. I hope we can keep hold of him.

There's lots to look forward to away from the league, too.

We've been drawn to play Bracknell Town away on the 27th October in the FA Trophy and Seaford in the Sussex Senior Cup in November - plus we are away to Hythe Town on Tuesday next week in the Velocity Trophy.
