A BOGNOR REGIS van driver who killed an elderly pedestrian has been jailed.

Maciej Dywan, 40, of Sandringham Way, was sentenced to four years behind bars for the fatal crash which involved Raymond Stenning.

Dywan's term was reduced from six years after he pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court to causing death by dangerous driving.

His sentencing last Friday also saw him disqualified from driving for five years following his release.

Hunston resident Mr Stenning, 71, was on his way to feed the ducks in the village when he was struck by Dywan's white Peugeot Boxer van which mounted the pavement.

After the sentencing, Mr Stenning's family issued a tribute to him.

THey said: "Ray was the most loving and caring husband, dad and grand-dad, who lived for his family.

"He was respected by everyone in the village and his death has had a massive impact not only on us as a family, but the whole community.

"On the day of the incident, Ray was walking a neighbour's dog which he did every day. He would then go down to the canal and watch the wildlife with his friends.

"Words cannot describe the traumatic way in which Ray passed away has affected us, and we all miss him deeply every day.

"THis all happened due to a van driver who was too impatient, and left the road

and hit Ray, who was innocently walking on the pavement.

"Ray will always be in our hearts and loved forever, and deeply missed by all who knew him."

THe accident occurred on the B2145 Selsey Road, close to the junction with Orchardside, about 10.50am on March 1.

Mr Stenning was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious head and pelvic injuries. He died there from his injuries six days later with his family around him.

Dywan was later identified and charged. In his police interview, he stated he had fallen asleep. But witness statements indicated he had been driving aggressively and had carried out a dangerous overtake immediately before he lost control and hit Mr Stenning because he was late getting home from a delivery.

Tony Crisp, of the Sussex Police serious collision investigation unit, warned drivers of the need to concentrate behind the wheel at all times.

"THis was a tragic case, where Dywan's level of driving fell far below the required standard," he said.

"A combination of fatigue and impatience led him to drive dangerously, resulting in the death of a much-loved local resident and family man.

"Driving requires the utmost concentration, and it is vital motorists don't drive while fatigued and allow themselves sufficient time to safely complete their journeys."

Councillor wants probe to look into park proposal spending A FORMAL complaint has been made about a council's handling of its linear park plans for Bognor Regis.

Town and district councillor Matt Stanley said he felt strongly enough over Arun District Council's work for the scheme for the Hothamton car park area to complain about its behaviour.

His complaint mainly centres around a public meeting held by his party, the Lib Dems, in the town on June 21.

He said: "It is my belief public money is being used wrongly in an attempt to influence political debate.

"As it transpired, none of the Conservative councillors was available

to attend the public meeting. However, Arun appeared to find £2,500 of taxpayers' money to spend on a twopage spread advertising the linear park."

It was now apparent the council was prepared to 'squander' more public money on four advertising boards for the £3m park to show contempt for the town's residents.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "THe council can confirm that a complaint has been received and is currently being investigated."

No further comment was being made on the matter at this time, she added.

Chance to name park and regenerate town VOTING has been opened to help to choose the name for a new park in Bognor Regis. Detailed designs for the ÂŁ3m open space are being drawn up.

It will transform the Hothamton car park into a modern, urban park created to provide hours of entertainment for all who visit.

Arun District Council is giving residents the chance to have their say about deciding a fitting name to reflect the park's importance for years to come.

THey can choose one from three options designed to reflect the town's history and royal links: * Pavilion Park - the site was location of the public entertainment building called the Pavilion * Princess Charlotte Park - the granddaughter of George III spent her summers in Bognor for several years in the early 1800s

* Duke of Sussex Park - in honour of the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex Arun leader Gillian Brown said: "THe new park will have something for everyone so I would encourage all residents to get involved in choosing a name for this fantastic facility which will really help to regenerate Bognor Regis."

THe proposal includes marketing the western part of the car park to developers for homes and business use.

THe park has been known since it was proposed as the linear park - but that title is no longer adequate as the plans come closer to becoming reality.

An Arun spokesman said: "THe final design is now being decided upon. Fully accessible, it could feature a water play plaza, land moulds for imaginative play, a natural play area, a performance area, and an amphitheatre-style tiered grass lawn.

"THis will sit alongside a central market square with seating, and a cafe with both inside and outside seating.

"THe park is being designed to host a rolling events programme and could also include a trim trail for adults seeking to get fit, along with plenty of seating.

"THe site will be well lit so it can be enjoyed after dusk and planting built into the park setting will obscure the parked cars, giving the area the look and feel of a park rather than a car park.

"THe park and car park design will make it a safe place where people can spend time relaxing and enjoying the many activities."

Protest is erected A TOTEM pole of defiance has been installed overlooking a Pagham field set to be covered in concrete.

Campaign group Pagam put up the structure towering over fields next to Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

Pagham and Aldwick Greenfield Action Movement (Pagam) member Giles Binyon said: "Pagham Harbour is a site of special scientific interest, a special protection area, a marine conservation zone and also has Ramsar and local nature reserve status and the fields beside it provide its lifeblood and protection.

"THe pole has been erected just days after Arun District Council narrowly and controversially appear to have approved plans to build at least 400 houses and other facilities right on top of the harbour, despite the planning meeting descending into chaos and being suspended by its chairman, Cllr Ricky Bower."

As reported, the permission was granted last week but councillors failed to decide two other applications for another 580 homes in Pagham.

Pagham's parish councillors said they could submit a formal complaint about the way Arun's development control committee was conducted.

Speaking at Tuesday's parish council meeting, Cllr David Huntley said: "I think it is a terrible way to run planning. We have grounds of complaint to Arun's monitoring officer and the local government ombudsman and we should get their addresses."

Cllr Ray Radmall, the parish council's chairman, said the housing had the potential to dislodge a large amount of water from the Chichester flood alleviation scheme after spells of heavy rainfall to damage the new and existing homes.

"It's going to be bad enough for Pagham even if the new houses are not built. It's no good officers saying it will be dealt with when it happens.

"It's very important we halt this housing because no thought has been taken of what these developments are going to have to cope with and what the existing residents are going to have to cope with," he said.

Parish council clerk Nicola Swann said no action should be taken until the minutes of the development control committee were published.

` Giant poppies say thanks from parish HUNDREDS of large poppies have gone on display in Felpham as a visual reminder of its men who fought in the First World War. THe 200 vivid red symbols of remembrance were installed on lamp-posts in the village by Felpham Village Conservation Society members, pictured front page.

THey adorned the main routes along Flansham Way to the bypass roundabout, from the Tesco Express store to the Flansham Park surgery and along to Butlin's and through the village centre. Joyce Pritchard, the society's chairman, said the response to the sight of the poppies had been staggering.

"We have been absolutely inundated with comments from people saying how lovely they are.

"People were also honking their horns when we were putting them up. We were able to put the poppies up in about three hours on Saturday morning. It was amazing work by about 20 people," she said.

THe plastic poppies measure about 16in long x 12in wide.

"THe poppies are probably the most popular thing our history group has done in recent years." said Mrs Pritchard.

She said she hoped they would prompt people, especially the younger generations, to think about those who died in the First World War and all wars fought by this country.

THe society continues its 1918-related activities from 2pm4pm on November 10 with a major exhibition at Felpham Memorial Village Hall about servicemen from the area in the war.

A special day to remember A SERIES of public events is being held around Bognor Regis to mark 100 years since the First World War ended.

THe occasions will give people the chance to pay tribute to soldiers from the town and its surrounding areas who gave their lives in the four-year conflict.

Events will begin at 11.50am with the annual service of remembrance at the war memorial outside the town hall in Clarence Road. THis will be preceded by a parade through the town centre and will include wreath-laying by a range of community organisations.

THe occasion has been attended by up to 1,000 people in recent years. Youth organisations and armed forces veterans join together, along with civic dignitaries and a large gathering of residents.

THe service is organised by the Royal British Legion in the town on behalf of Bognor Regis Town Council.

THe town council will be playing its part in an international commemoration of the centenary of the armistice later in the day.

Called Battle's Over, it has been compiled

by Bruno Peek, using his work staging major royal celebrations and international events for 36 years.

He said: "It is wonderful to see the event being embraced by so many organisations and communities in this country and around the world.

"THe centenary of the end of the Great War is an opportunity to acknowledge the enormous sacrifice made by the millions of men and women who died or were wounded, as well as those who

worked tirelessly at home in our fields and factories."

Battle's Over also features special tributes to two groups of unsung heroes - THe Chinese Labour Corps and the First World War tunnellers.

Battle's Over will start in Bognor Regis at the seafront beacon opposite the Place St Maur at 6.45pm - rather than the 6am elsewhere - with a lone piper playing Battle O'er.

THis is a traditional Scottish air played after a battle. After this, a specially written tribute will be read out.

At 6.55pm, a buglar will play the Last Post and the beacon will be lit at 7pm.

Five minutes later, town crier Jane Smith will read out the specially written Cry for Peace Around the World.

Cllr Stephen Reynolds, town mayor of Bognor Regis, said: "We are proud to be playing a part in this historic international event to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War, and to recognise the contribution and sacrifice made by the men and women from our own community."

THe same events will take place across the UK and in scores of overseas locations such as New Zealand, Ireland, the USA and Germany.

THe commemoration will continue with a lantern-lit pavement procession from the seafront along Church Path to St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street for a reading of the names of all 104 men from South Bersted who sacrificed their lives in the war.

Additional road closures in place for town's remembrance events EXTRA road closures will be put in place in Bognor Regis for this year's Remembrance Sunday events.

Motorists have been advised of the changes they will need to make to their journeys on November 11.

THe centenary of the end of the First World War has seen a speical commemorative event organised for the evening on the seafront.

Jo Davis, the town council's civic and office manager, said: "To allow for this commemorative event to be held on the Promenade, opposite Place St Maur, a road closure order has been granted between 5.30pm and 7.30pm

on Sunday, November 11.

"THe Esplanade, between Clarence Road and Lennox Street, will be closed to vehicles from 5.30pm to 7.30pm."

In addition, the traditional remembrance service will take place at the war memorial outside the town hall in the morning. THis will mean the surrounding roads will be closed.

"Belmont Street (from the junction of York Road to the junction of Albert Street), Clarence Road (from the car park to the junction of High Street) and Sussex Street will be closed to vehicles from 10.30am to 11.30am," said Mrs Davis.

Jean pays tribute to soldiers who died in First World War FIRST World War soldiers from the Five Villages will have their lives recalled in a unique play next week.

Experienced actress and scriptwriter Jean Rogers has created a show which pays tribute to their sacrifices during the conflict.

She is staging Our Local Lads in words and music at Eastergate Village Hall at 7.30pm on November 10. THe night will be in aid of the Royal British Legion.

THe moving and evocative look at the life of the rural community a century ago will feature three actresses and three actors along with musicans.

Eastergate resident Jean will be the narrator. One of the soldiers she has focused upon is Slindon resident Charlie Bowley.

"He was a groom and a gardener and lived with his wife, Mary, and their seven children. He enrolled in the Army in the first month of the war and went to Chichester where 1,200 men formed the Seventh Battalion of the Royal Sussex Rifles," she said.

"He went off to war but he was sent home in 1915 because he had meningitis. He died in Slindon but, because he didn't die in action, his widow didn't get any money."

Her desperate battle to survive with pleas to councillors will be portrayed in the production.

Another tale will look at the war record of a teacher at Eastergate's village school, who had moved from Lewisham in south east London.

Jean has based much of her work on the research carried out by Jill Shaw.

"THere are 82 names on the three war memorials in Barnham, Eastergate and Aldingbourne. THose in Aldingbourne represent a fifth of its population at the time who died, which is staggering.

"Several families lost two sons. In one family, two sons were killed in the same battle on the same day.

"Putting on this show is quite moving but I'm trying to be detached about it and work out what will work and what won't."

Jean, who was born during the Second World War, played Dolly Skilbeck in the popular soap Emmerdale for 11 years.

She presented and wrote BBC Radio 4's Listen with Mother for seven years and the BBC's Schools' Watch.

She is a founder-member of Laurence Olivier's Royal National THeatre and appeared in two of his Chichester Festival THeatre seasons.

Her new play, My Dear Miss Terry, about the love letters between Bernard Shaw and Dame Ellen Terry, will be performed on November 24 at the Worthing Cellar Arts Club.

A vice-president of the actors' union Equity for 10 years, she was honoured with the TUC Women's Gold Badge Award.

Poppies are in demand SHOPPERS were quick to support this year's Poppy Appeal when it was launched in Bognor Regis.

THe customers snapped up the remembrance symbols as soon as they went on sale officially at Sunday's launch.

One of those who showed their backing for the Royal British Legion was Middleton resident Jo Ashbery. She bought metal poppies for herself and her nine-year-old daughter, Ella.

"It's all about remembering those who lost their lives for us and all those who are looking after us now. THat's important at this time," said Mrs Ashbery. We don't want to forget how people gave up their lives for others and we should keep this going for years to come."

THe appeal's launch took place at Sainsbury's in Shripney Road - after an informal launch across the road in Tesco the previous day.

Aldwick Poppy Appeal organiser Nigel Ede said the appeal took on a special significance this year because of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

"THe money raised by the appeal goes directly towards caring and helping those who served in the forces, those who are serving now and their dependents, as well as those who have fallen on hard times," he said.

THe appeal raised nearly £23,000 in the Bognor Regis area last year. Mr Ede hoped that would be beaten in 2018.

THe launch was attended by contingents of air and sea cadets. Among those who were selling the poppies was Jade Brooker, 11, a Junior Leading Cadet of TS Sir Alec Rose.

She said: "People are happy to see us doing this.

It's important we do it to support the people in the forces who gave their lives and those who are still serving."

Cllr Stephen Reynolds, town mayor of Bognor Regis, also added his backing to the event.

"THis year is especially important for the Poppy Appeal but it is always important to support it. It brings home the sacrifices our armed forces make for us," he said.

A SERIES of services are being held around Bognor Regis on Remembrance Sunday.

THe annual civic services on November 11 this year mark the exact centenary of the armistice which ended the First World War. Aldwick Parish Council will commemorate the anniversary of 1918 with a recitation of the names of relatives of the area's current residents who served in the conflict.

THis will take place at its millennium gardens in Pryors Lane.

Aldingbourne's service will take place at 10am in St Mary's Church, followed by another at the war memorial on the A29 in Eastergate.

St Mary's Church in Felpham will hold a remembrance service.

THe service at Bognor Regis will take place at the war memorial in front of the town hall in Clarence Road.

Unless otherwise stated, the services take place around a silence and wreath-laying at 11am.

THe installation, film and exhibition, There But Not There, continues at St Mary Magdalene Church in South Bersted for the next two weekends.

It will be open in the church, in Bersted Street, from 2pm-4pm on the Saturdays and Sundays.

THe Friends charity is staging a 3pm service at the wartime roll of honour at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

St THomas a'Becket Church in Pagham is staging Remember, Recall, Reflect from 3pm-5pm on November 11. THis will feature a short service, a talk and poetry reading.

Aldwick plan to be updated A FRESH look is being taken at a blueprint which protects Aldwick.

Parish councillors have agreed to update its five-year-old village design statement.

THe document sets out the features of each area of the parish and what should be done to ensure the best of them are maintained for future generations to enjoy.

THe statement is taken into account by Arun District Council when considering planning applications.

It has no legal power and it does not stop new developments but it helps to influence how they, with extensions to existing buildings, fit into the parish by setting out the qualities and characteristics people value in the parish.

Cllr Lilian Richardson, the parish council's chairman, said at its latest meeting it was time to look again at the statement before the local elections in May next year.

"We should look at the existing design statement and update it where it's necessary," she said.

"We are laying solid foundations for the new council to take forward either with a neighbourhood plan or with a current design statement.

"It will come down to the new council to decide if that amount of work and that amount of money will achieve the actual outcome that fits in with that workload and with that spend."

Several councillors have volunteered to look through sections of the design statement to ensure no mistakes were made in the original document and make any changes that had become necessary as a result of the five years since it was written.

THey will give their suggestions to the council's clerk, Sue Batey, to forward to the working party of the council.

"THey will look at the whole design statement and make any revisions necessary and get it ready for next year's councillors to produce a refined design statement or a neighbourhood plan," said Cllr Richardson.

Aldwick's existing design statement says: "It is now recognised that local distinctiveness is vital in helping to integrate new development and in creating sustainable communities.

"THis can be achieved through an understanding of local character, and by ensuring this understanding is shared with anyone considering development."

THe statement divides the parish into areas such as West Meads, Rose Green and Aldwick Park and describes their characteristics and the criteria for future development.

For West Meads, it states the area is notable for open, green amenity spaces, large, open-plan gardens, wide, treelined verges, wide pavements and wellspaced and well-designed properties of appropriate scale.

For future development, it sets out: "New or replacement buildings or extensions should be visually subservient and relate to the existing building and not vary significantly in height or bulk from those nearby."

A neighbourhood plan is a formal document compiled after community consultations, is assessed by a planning inspector, agreed by an area's residents in a referendum and backed by Arun.

Outline proposals for houses in Eastergate are withdrawn SEPARATE plans for a total of nearly 40 homes in the same road in Eastergate have both been withdrawn.

THe largest of the outline proposals was for 28 dwellings on land at the Boweries in Barnham Road.

Developer Domusea Developments has told Arun District Council it no longer wants to continue with its application for the 1.49 hectare site after it had applied for planning permission earlier this year.

Its planning agent, Paul White, has told the council: "...our client has secured agreement with other

adjacent landowners to resubmit a fresh application which includes the adjoining land and that will be submitted to you shortly."

THe initial plan was to build 20 three and four-bedroom houses for sale on the property market and eight threebedroom houses for social rent.

THe other application was to establish the principle of ten homes at Bexstone House in Barnham Road.

Its applicant, Christine Hewitt, informed Arun she was no longer interested in pursuing the proposal on the site of 0.65 hectares.

` 'Firearms' offence POTENTIAL witnesses have been sought to a suspected firearms offence in Ford.

Sussex Police has appealed for help in identifying three men in connection with the potential crime.

A spokesman said on Friday: "THe three, who are described as in their early 20s, were spotted walking along Ford Road towards the railway station at 2.15pm on September 2 and one of the men was carrying what was believed to be a gun."

One suspect was described as white, of slim build and with short fair hair. He wore a blue hooded top with 72 in white writing on the front, white trainers, jeans and carried a small blue Adidas bag.

THe second man was white, slimly built, with light brown hair and wore a dark blue long-sleeved hooded top, a dark coloured puffer-style jacket and grey tracksuit bottoms. THe other suspect was white, of stocky build, with short dark hair. He wore a black Nike tracksuit with a white stripe along the arms and black trainers.

Damien Enticott has pleaded not guilty to the alleged offences. THey include assault by threatening, burglary and attempted burglary.

He appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday and is due to stand trial at the court next February, according to the court.

Cllr Enticott was elected in the Hatherleigh ward nine months ago and is an Independent on the council.

RNA recognises Cadet Amy's work NAVY Commander Michael Dreelan has presented a Bognor Regis cadet with recognition of her achievements.

Cdr Dreelan handed over an engraved Bosun's pipe in a presentation case, with a certificate, to Cadet Amy Wales.

THis acknowledged her work with the traditional naval instrument and continued a tradition of the town's Royal Naval Association branch at an annual event.

Cadet Wales was one of two sea cadets who used their Bosun's pipes for the naval traditional call Hands to Dinner before guests sat down for the meal at the branch's dinner to celebrate the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805, and the exploits of Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson, who died in the famous battle against the French fleet.

Members of TS Sir Alec Rose had earlier been inspected by Cdr Dreelan, who is in charge of HMS Excellent in Portsmouth.

He talked to each of them while they were in the guard of honour.

Cdr Dreelan was also presented with a plaque of the RNA crest to thank him for his support of the branch in the past three years.

Branch chairman Ron Hargest said: "Cdr Dreelan has been very supportive to the branch, the town's armed forces days and the HMS St Barbara memorial at Bognor Regis Pier.

He also took a keen interest in the cadets of TS Sir Alec Rose and would make a point of talking to as many of them as he could, whatever the occasion."

Cdr Dreelan's time as the commanding officer of HMS Excellent in Portsmouth ends this month.

FRIENDS and family of a Felpham resident gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Dorothy Bradberry has lived in the area for 40 years and was joined by a host of well-wishers for her party at Felpham Memorial Village Hall.

One of her grandsons flew in from the USA to attend the celebration.

She lives in the Oaklands Court residential homes but only recently moved from the Roundle Estate.

Her daughter, Jane Perry, said: "Dorothy and her late husband, Brad, were very involved in the local community.

"THey helped raise money for the Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital

and Dorothy had been a member of the Red Cross for many years and, indeed, attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace for her services to Red Cross.

"She was also a former member of the WI, Rife Club and had been a great bridge player."

Dorothy said she attributed her long life to several factors.

"It is keeping very active for as long as possible, enjoying time with the family and friends and having a great sense of humour."

She has two children, four grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. A fourth great-grandchild is due to be born in Australia next March.

Plenty of spine-tingling shivers as horrors of halloween are enjoyed THOUSANDS of visitors had their spines tingled at a halloween spooktacular in Aldingbourne.

THe Aldingbourne Trust transformed its usually tranquil woods into a walk on the dark side for its annual October ogrefest.

THe three days of events at the Aldingbourne Country Centre saw more than 3,000 people go along to join in the frightening fun last weekend.

From ghouls to ghosts and werewolves to witches, there was a scary surprise waiting around every corner.

Smokey sunshine rays filled the woods with an eerie feeling while coffins opened and closed mysteriously as people passed by.

Jen Sears, the event's manager, said: "THis has been the best halloween event we have ever organised.

"THe feedback from the customers has been great and they have requested even more scares for next year.

"Some of the customers' reactions were 'Brilliant event, so glad the weather was kind to you. We all had a lovely day out.

THank you very much' to 'Great day, gets

better every year, thank you'."

She said the trust - an award-winning charity which supports adults with learning disabilities - would like to thank all those who went along.

It hoped they would all return next year for more heart-stopping horror, she added.

Meanwhile, a gathering of ghosts haunted the history on show in Bognor Regis Museum last week.

A large number of young visitors took the chance to hunt apparitions in the attraction's latest halloween event, THe ten cheeky apparitions were hidden among displays about the town's past.

THose who managed to find all of the spectres were able to claim a free halloween treat from volunteers at the museum.

At least 100 completed ghost hunt forms had been handed in by last Friday lunchtime - with two more days of the phantom fun still to go.

Jane Barnes, a trustee of Bognor Regis Local History Society, which runs the museum, said the event had been a

success.

She said: "We do like to encourage young people into the museum and we want them to have a happy experience.

"I think a lot of them come in specially for it. THey have smiles on their faces when they hand in their forms - and they all like to receive a lollipop."

THe hunt helped youngsters find out more about the town's history and showed the subject was enjoyable, she said.

She added: "It makes them look at the displays more when they have got to look for something which might be in it. THat concentrates their minds a bit."

THe museum is staying open after this Sunday, on mornings only. THe 10am1pm sessions will start next Tuesday and continue daily, except for Mondays, until the museum's Christmas special event.

THis will take place from 10am-4pm on November 24 and 25, with free entry.

It will feature a vintage Christmas decorations display, a lucky dip, festive music, have-a-go nut cracking and stocking filler ideas.

` New houses plan RENEWED plans have been revealed for houses on the site of a Bognor Regis hotel's former tennis courts.

Mr and Mrs D. Skinner have applied to Arun District Council to build the four terraced dwellings next to the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

THe latest plan follows a previous scheme in 2016 which a government planning inspector rejected because of a loss of privacy and overlooking between the hotel guests and the houses' future occupiers.

Adrian Hoy, planning agent for Mr and Mrs Skinner, says in a statement the latest proposal takes account of that decision.

"THis proposal has been significantly altered, with a rear unit removed from the proposal and a significant increase in distance separation from the hotel," he states.

"THe relationship between the proposed units and existing hotel is considered to be acceptable and there would no adverse impact on adjoining occupiers or the living conditions of future occupiers."

THe proposed dwellings would front on to West Street. THe central block of two houses would project slightly forward of the supporting wings and would comprise three storeys.

THe 19th century hotel is a Grade II-listed building.

Radio station on the move in town VOLUNTEERS at a community radio station in Bognor Regis are set to host the first event at their new base.

THe helpers with Radio Respect are getting ready to start broadcasting from premises in Argyle Road in the middle of this month.

THey are marking the impending expansion with a first event at their renamed studio this weekend.

THe Blue Room, in West Street, will host a book sale from 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. More than 800 secondhand titles will be on sale.

Radio Respect owner Chris Collins said: "Although we only moved to West Street in February, it became evident during the summer, as the radio station and shop became more well known, that we needed a bigger studio and also a private area to sit down and chat with those seeking mental health support.

"It was also obvious that we needed more shop space to house the regular donations of vinyl records, retro audiovisual hardware and other items such as DVDs, CDs, books and cassettes, kindly given by the public, to whom we are so grateful, for their amazing, continual support and generosity."

Radio Respect was started in 2013 by Chris and his wife, Caroline Collins, in a shed to bring the mental health community together, help people to understand their condition and provide a friendly voice.

It began in the couple's shed and moved to an office in Station Road. THe success of the online broadcasts led to the move to West Street nine months ago.

But the need for the radio station and the shop and private space to be separated has seen the second space rented a few metres away, opposite the

town's Foodbank.

"With our new place in Argyle Road, we can make better radio programmes, with more guests and more shows, while THe Blue Room can offer a valuable service for the community, especially those seeking mental health support, which is still at the heart of our plans.

"By moving the radio station to Argyle Road, the West Street shop can use the additional space of the old studio to

From November 16, THe Blue Room will also be the location for four weekly craft workshops to offer the chance to work with air dry clay such as decorating with acrylic paints and clear varnishing the results.

Radio Respect also plans a monthly indoor table market in different locations around the town. THe first will be on November 18 at Newtown Sports and Social Club in Greencourt Drive.

Global Technologies Racing Limited (GTR) is a leading carbon composites manufacturer, based at Fontwell, with developing local talent at the forefront of its ethos.

GTR set up a training programme to ensure full training in the necessary skill sets was available to new members of staff and set them on their future careers.

Martin Meissel, general manager of Global Technologies Racing, said: "As GTR is a significant employer in the Arun district and being 100 miles away from 'motorsport valley' (the area around Northampton that holds most of the motorsport teams and composites supply chain), GTR actively seeks to develop local talent.

"THis way we are not competing for the same people as the other suppliers, and we are keeping a constant stream of new talent feeding into the pool.

"For the past couple of years, this has worked very well, and our training academy is becoming more well known in the area.

"As such, we are finding more and

more people approaching us regarding opportunities to join our programme, including more females.

"GTR is taking on a lot of highly complex composite work and being able to draw upon and develop a local talent pool is really good for the employment prospects in the area.

"Being able to offer manufacturing opportunities to women who would otherwise not consider it an option, and who then go on to excel in the environment, is something that we are extremely proud of."

DONATIONS for air force personnel spending Christmas abroad are being sought by Bognor Regis well-wishers.

Cakes, tea, coffee, biscuits, books and magazines and Christmas decorations will be welcomed by members of the town's RAF Association branch by next Friday.

THat is the deadline for sending the items to Mali where the men and women of the RAF's 18B Squadron are based for the next few months.

Branch Chinook force liasion officer Mike Monk is organising the parcel collections. He said: "Where the service personnel are in Mali is not the best place to be at Christmas and we want to make it as pleasant as possible."

THe first delivery of electronic equipment was handed over by the branch's welfare officer, Sue Hull, to Sgt Jamie Donnelly, representing 18B Squadron.

It comprised ten 13W folding solar panel chargers, tablets, power packs, power banks, mini-power banks and lighting.

Sgt Donnelly said it would help the troops communicate at their base and on detachment.

Donations should be taken to the RAFA Club in Waterloo Square, Bognor Regis, from 11.30am-11pm daily, except 6.30pm on Sunday, by next Friday.

Kind-hearted Derek is named town angel GENEROUS Bognor Regis allotment holder Derek Baker has become the town's first Angel of the South.

Derek was presented with the new honour by the Bognor Community Gardeners in recognition of the free food he provides for a host of residents.

Derek cultivates two allotments in Hook Lane and gives away much of the produce he grows.

Carrots, peas, cauliflowers, leeks and brussel sprouts are among the healthy vegetables he provides to ensure those who struggle to pay for food can eat some nutritious food.

Derek, 64, said: "It's a bit of a shock and embarrassing to get this award. It's nice to be recognised for what I am doing.

"But I don't do it for recognition. I do it for the pleasure of helping people who can't afford proper food. It is nice to give people something decent to eat.

"It's very satisfying growing vegetables from the start. Planting the seed and watching it grow and is a good feeling.

"It also tastes ten times better than anything you buy in the shops."

THis year's scorching summer even enabled Derek, 64, to grow melons in the three greenhouses he has on his plots.

"I go down there every day for a couple of hours. It gives me something to do," said the former mental health services worker.

He distributes some of the food to people he knows need it. He takes other bagfuls are taken to Granddads Front Room Community Interest Company in

the High Street for it to pass on.

Derek said: "THe feedback I get is just fantastic. People say it's so nice to have such good food."

His certificate was awarded by the community gardeners' founder, Kim Davis, and their treasurer, Matt Stanley.

Kim said: "Derek's food is given out to whoever needs it in the community. We were having a chat about this the other day and we decided that Derek should be our first Angel of the South."

Matt said: "We wanted to give Derek some recognition for the good work he has done for growing food and distributing it to the people who need it the most. THank you for your work, Derek."

THe presentation took place at the first community day held by gardeners at the Sunken Garden in Bognor Regis town centre where they do most of their work.

Last week's popular event, inset right, saw them host the Forest Knights in the garden, located between the Hothamton car park and Waterloo Square.

THe free activities included toasting marshmallows, basic bushcraft, rope making, wood whittling and lavender bag making.

Matt said: "THe day has gone really well. We had 10 people waiting before we started and there have been about 70-80 people here in the first hour.

"THe weather has helped and it has brought the community into the garden, which is what we want.

better and events like this showcase the wonderful work the gardeners do.

"A lot of people don't know the gardens are here and we want to encourage them to come here more often."

Among the families who went along were Jenny Foster and her two children, Marnie Foster, five, and Linden Foster, two, and their friend, Poppy Field, five.

Jenny said: "THis is a lovely event. It's nice to have something to come to with the children which is free.

"It is also good to get the children outside doing something which is interesting to them.

"I do walk through the garden but I usually go to Hotham Park with them. But I might come here more now."

THe community gardeners hope to stage a series of activities. THe next will be a visit from Owls About Town on November 24.

Husband's appeal for Helen A BARNHAM man has appealed for his missing wife to get in touch - a year after she was last seen.

Ken Slaughter said he and their three sons desperately missed Helen Slaughter. THe last sighting of her was on CCTV leaving her home in the village around 6am on November 1, 2017.

Mr Slaughter said: "I keep hoping that Helen will get in touch. I keep hoping that Helen is OK and I just hope we are going to come home one day and find Helen is back home."

He said he had Christmas, birthday and Valentine cards and presents to give to Helen, aged 49.

"Helen loved her sons and she spent lots of time with them when they were younger...and she would spend time with them now.

"THe boys are really missing their mum and it's heartbreaking really," said Mr Slaughter.

"I would like to tell her we are all still at home,

all still love her and we wish she was back now."

Helen is 5ft 2ins tall, of small build, with brown short hair. She normally wears glasses.

She was last seen wearing dark jeans, a lightcoloured fleece and a woolly hat. She has small tattoos on both arms.

Inspector Ian Maloney, from Sussex Police's missing persons unit, said: "Helen's disappearance still remains out of character for her and we are desperate to hear from her.

"We are urging the public to continue to keep a look out for her and would ask everyone to cast their minds back to see if they remember Helen from the time of her disappearance.

"Did you notice Helen wandering the fields and wooded areas while out walking?

"Helen, if you are reading this we just want to know you are safe. Please get in touch with either us or our family."

Sightings of Helen should be given to 999.

` Walk for legal clinic A TEAM of walkers has tackled the THames to help the Chichester Law Clinic.

THe pedestrians with a purpose completed a 13.1-mile route along the watercourse in London on Saturday.

THey comprised volunteers and staff from Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice who stepped out on the bright but cold morning.

Luca Badioli, chief executive of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "We are passionate about making sure that less fortunate people are able to have access to justice.

"THat is why we want to make sure the service is continued, but without your support this service is likely to go."

THe help-point was set up six years ago largely thanks to Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, Chichester College and Sussex Legal Services.

It provides free legal help to people following cuts in legal aid.

All the funds raised by Citizens Advice on the walk, plus those raised by it at the Chichester Legal Walk, will go towards providing administrative support for the law clinic.

Education officials go back to the classroom f Nick Gibb with staff and volunteers at the centre

Popular centre praised by MP MP NICK GIBB used his latest visit to a Bognor Regis centre to learn about the start of social prescribing in the town.

Mr Gibb discussed the service at the Laburnum Centre which highlights the importance of mixing with other people to maintain good health.

THe centre, run by Age UK West Sussex, is working with GP surgeries around the town to encourage this approach for some of their patients.

Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "It's all too easy to become isolated in old age.

"But the evidence is now very clear that maintaining a busy social life is

a key component of living a healthy life.

"THe volunteers and members at the Laburnum Centre have a huge range of high quality activities at their disposal - from line dancing to computing, art to bingo, chiropody to hair salon, as well as a plethora of other classes and a restaurant. It's a lovely, friendly facility."

Mr Gibb watched a line dance class taking place during his time at the Lyon Street centre.

He also met its bingo group, saw its gym, hair salon and restaurant.

THe Laburnum Centre has 1,100 members and is open to people over the age of 50 for an annual membership fee of £65.

EDUCATION leaders from China have learned about education in this country.

THe 24 officials from the Beijing Xicheng District were given an extensive tour of Ormiston Six Villages Academy.

THey were particularly interested to find out how schools are managed in the UK. Paul Slaughter, principal of the academy, said: "We were thrilled to welcome the Chinese contingent of brilliant education leaders to Six Villages.

"We hope they learned a lot about what UK schools are like, and what

our fantastic academy specifically has to offer. THe visit was a great success and we've received positive feedback from the visitors and the University of Chichester.

"I would like to say a big thank you to our Year 9 students who proved to be excellent hosts and ambassadors for our academy."

THe visit to the academy, in Lime Avenue, was organised by the University of Chichester. During their time on site, the visitors were given a personal tour of the campus by employees and visited

lessons across all subject areas with Year 9 students.

THey also spent time with Mr Slaughter, who delivered a presentation, followed by interesting and productive talks with senior leaders like Naomi Sheldrake.

THe academy's visitors also had the chance to take part in a personal Q&A session with Mr Slaughter before they posed for a group photograph.

THe Chinese contingent spoke of how impressed they had been with the academy and presented a football shirt to Mr Slaughter as a thank you gift.

If the children have worked up an appetite skimming stones, then the kids' menu includes a varied choice of breakfasts and main courses just for them. Plus there’s warming hot chocolate and the fun Billy’s sundaes for those impervious to the cold, such as Double Doggy Doo Delight – a melting pot of chocolate ice cream, Maltesers, crushed flakes, chocolate sauce and cream.

THroughout the winter, the café hosts regular events, such as music nights, when musicians provide live entertainment on a Saturday evening, or its locals nights held every THursday, with a seasonal set menu.

You don’t have to be local to join in, just get yourself to Bracklesham Bay from 5.30pm on THursdays and you will be part of the Billy’s community.

Getting there is easy. THere is plenty of parking near the café, but if you want to enjoy a pint of two of local craft ale from Arundel’s Goldmark Brewery then the Number 52 bus stops just the other side of Beech Avenue in Bracklesham Lane – a few minutes’ walk to the cafe. From the centre of Chichester, the ride takes just 30 minutes.

Or when it’s low tide, you can walk all the way to Billy’s on the Beach along the coastline from East Wittering. THis 20-minute stroll will work up an appetite for the café’s famous breakfast.

So, there is no excuse for hibernating under the duvet this winter. Head to Bracklesham Bay for some invigorating sea air and then reward yourself with a warm Billy’s welcome.

Colour coordinate foods and seasons AUTUMN is here! THis time of year is so beautiful. For ages we seemed to be in the middle of what felt like a prolonged summer (which of course I am not complaining about at all) and is it, or is it not autumn yet?

Well, finally, I think we can safely say autumn is upon us. THe leaves are falling and on my commute this week it was four degrees at 7am. THe coats are on, gloves dusted off, scarves and hats at the ready and log fires burning.

Now is the perfect time to boost your natural immunity and give your body the best chance of defending yourself against some of those pesky change-of-season bugs that will soon be floating around – not to mention the dreaded cold and flu season.

Traditional Chinese medicine teaches the five-element theory where foods are inextricably linked to season, flavour, colour, and organ. Foods that reflect the season’s colours are most beneficial to our bodies during that time of the year. Autumn is a

season for white, red, yellow and orange foods. THink root vegetables, pears, radish, onions, garlic, white beans, winter melon, tofu, cauliflower and jicama – a type of turnip.

White foods are high in allicin, which reduces blood sugar and has strong antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties purported to support the lungs and large intestine. is actually as important as exercising, so make sure you are allowing enough time in your day for both. Another great way to keep moving as it gets cooler is by utilising household chores like gardening, raking leaves, cleaning out wardrobes, and packing away your summer gear. Including these jobs into your everyday activities will keep you moving all autumn long.

Avoid comfort food binging. THe lead up to winter can be a bleak time for many dieters. Whether you’re trying to lose a few pounds or just trying to maintain a healthy weight, staying strong through the change of season is important. While the cold weather makes most of us want to reach for our favourite comfort foods, there are ways to curb your body’s urges.

Keeping up with a regular workout routine is the first. THe basic rules is if you’re eating more you need to be moving more. Secondly, try to avoid going to parties or functions hungry, too many food and drink choices are sure to foster overeating. Avoid that extra glass of your favourite tipple, alcohol can be warm and comforting but its also loaded with calories.

Treat your allergies. Allergies are also something that can trigger wheezing, lung issues and sinus aggravations this time of year, but try to be clear about what triggers you. THen it's easier to avoid, protect and address your issues more appropriately.

It can be dust, mould, damp air, coldness, animals, dry air with heating, and the list goes on.

However, do not despair as there are so many ways of treating yourself naturally.

Acupuncture, for instance, has emerged as one solution for what’s ailing you this autumn. THe World Health Organisation believes acupuncture can provide benefits to those suffering from acute sinusitis, acute rhinitis, cold, acute tonsillitis and bronchitis.

Reflexology is also useful in many health situations, as is homeopathy (always seek a registered professional).

Having aromatherapy oils burning in your house can also help protect you, such as peppermint oil and eucalyptus. THey can help ward off unwanted airborne viruses and keep your breathing pathways happy.

Foods, of course, are vital, because they can make the difference to your immune system. Avoiding too much dairy and wheat for example, could help improve sinus and chest congestion.

Try adding some daily fennel. Why? THis wonderful aromatic herb fennel contains good levels of phytoestrogens while also acting as a digestive carminative. If your digestion is working properly, you can guarantee your immune system will be working better.

Fennel may also help balance oestrogen levels while relieving IBS symptoms brought on potentially by anxiety or stress.

Fennel contains good amounts of fibre, potassium, folate and vitamin C as well as B6. It supports heart health by reducing the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Try a light salad with strips of fresh fennel or a cleansing Fennel soup - always make fresh from scratch.

Why include cauliflower? Although available all-year-round, cauliflower is at its best in the winter months. THe florets are great used raw in a salad or as part of a crudité selection served with dips.

Cauliflower contains antioxidants and phytonutrients that can protect against cancer, fibre that helps with satiety, weight loss and a healthy digestive tract, choline that is essential for learning and memory, as well as many other important health benefits.

Take it as red these are some of the best wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com THIS week three different red wines come under close scrutiny as I look at wines priced in the £10 to £15 bracket.

My first selection is that of an Estate Series Errazuriz 2016 Pinot Noir from the Aconcagua Valley in Chile, priced at circa ten readies.

Pinot Noir is a tad fickle as a grape variety and requires relatively high maintenance in the vineyard and, whilst Burgundy remains the heartland, several other regions are becoming well regarded as winemakers gain more experience, vines are of a greater age and a lighter touch in the winery leads to impressive results!

When young, Pinot Noir wines have red berry and fruit flavours, such as strawberry, cherry and raspberry and with ageing they grow more complex with bramble, mushroom and spice flavours forming.

Pinot Noir grapes are suited to cooler climates such as Oregon in the USA, Central Otago NZ, Mornington Peninsula (Australia), Santa Barbara (California)

and even coastal areas of Chile.

Height and ocean influences bring surrounding temperatures down and this Errazuriz Pinot Noir is from a familyowned winery from the cool climate Aconcagua Costa region near the Pacific shores where cool breezes and sunshine aplenty create fresh wines.

THe initial nose is almost asphyxiating - an olfactory sensation in fact - and this wine is soft and luscious, slightly earthy with a hint of wild herbs with subtle red fruits to the fore and latent spice.

Well-balanced and elegant, with ageing potential, this is proper Pinot Noir at an affordable price with soft tannins to boot and one well worth a try and available at Majestic Warehouses.

My second red is available from Asda stores for roughly fourteen pounds and is a Villa Maria Hawkes Bay 2016 Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Constituted of Bordeaux varietals Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the free draining alluvial Gimblett gravels allied to high sunshine hours provide the right terroir for these grapes and the mélange thereof combines the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon with the vibrant fruit of Merlot.

THis wine has a powerful nose and oozes juicy red cherry, dark plums plus hints of cedar and vanilla oak as well as an underlying tobacco character and a vestige of smoke.

Good length and a velvety texture allied to a slight bitterness akin to dark chocolate are also features of this good

wine and it is one which would pair ideally with roast lamb!

My final red selection is that of a 2015 Robert Oakley McLaren Vale Shiraz available from Hennings for circa thirteen pounds. Bob Oatley’s mantra is that all wines should be a darned good drink and it is he who founded

Cauliflower fritters with herby dipping sauce

serves: 4-6

Method

INGREDIENTS • 1 large cauliflower, cut into small florets • sunflower oil, for deep-frying FOR THE BATTER: • 85g plain flour • 1 tbsp cornflour • 125ml sparkling water • ½ tsp coriander seeds, ground FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE: • 1 large bunch of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • zest and juice 1 lemon • 1 tbsp small capers • 3 tbsp olive oil

pepper. Aeration for at least an hour is a must for this Mocha-rich Australian red with a hint of liquorice which would be a great accompaniment to grilled meats and is just what you expect of an Aussie Shiraz!

1. Whisk batter ingredients together, then let it rest while you make the dipping sauce. Mix sauce ingredients together and set aside. Cook cauliflower in boiling salted water for 2 mins, then drain and refresh with cold water.

2. Heat about 10cm depth vegetable oil in a highsided pan. Once oil is hot, test with a small bit of

bread – if it turns golden in 30 secs, it’s ready.

3. Dip the dry cauliflower into batter, shake off any excess and place in the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden, about 3 mins, then remove to a plate lined with kitchen paper.

To keep warm, keep the florets in a low oven. Once all the cauliflower is fried, season with sea salt and serve with the sauce.

serves: 6-8

INGREDIENTS • 1 large butternut squash, deseeded and cut into chunks • 2 tsp olive oil, plus a drizzle • 1 onion, finely chopped • 15 sage leaves, 6 finely chopped • 85g butter • 85g plain flour • 2 tsp English mustard powder • 1l semi-skimmed milk • 250g pack extra mature or mature cheddar, grated • 50g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), finely grated • 450g macaroni

Butternut squash & sage macaroni cheese

Method 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Toss two-thirds of the butternut squash with the olive oil and seasoning, and roast for 20 mins until nearly tender (it will finish cooking later). Chop the remaining squash coarsely, put in a heatproof bowl with 100ml water and cover with cling film. Microwave on High for 8-10 mins until tender. Drain and mash.

2. Fry the onion in a knob of butter until softened but not browned, about 5 mins. Stir in the chopped sage and cook for 1 min more, then add the remaining butter to melt. Stir in the flour and mustard powder, and cook for 1 min until it forms a paste. Gradually whisk in splashes of milk (you can add in bigger additions

as you go) until you have a smooth sauce. Bubble, stirring constantly, for 3-5 mins until thickened. Take off the heat and whisk in the mashed squash, 200g of the cheddar and half the Parmesan. Season to taste.

3. Cook the macaroni following pack instructions. Drain well, then stir into the sauce with the roasted squash.

Tip into a baking dish and scatter with the remaining cheese and sage leaves.

Can be made up to a day ahead at this point – cool and keep in the fridge. If freezing, don’t add the whole sage leaves.

4. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 again. Splash the sage leaves with oil and bake for 40 mins until bubbling and golden on top.

LIFE AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY Teresa Donald, 70, has enjoyed walking for as long as she can remember, so when her arthritic hip started to affect not only her ability to walk but her lifestyle, Teresa decided to speak to one of the UK’s leading Orthopaedic Consultants at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital and have a full hip replacement. Nine months after having a hip replacement, Teresa is delighted to share what life with her new hip is like and how post operation, she set herself the challenge of climbing the highest peak in Britain, which she did pain free.

I started to recognise I had arthritis when I was around 40 years old. Whilst the pain wasn’t too bad, it gradually got worse with time and eventually became unbearable.

I have always loved walking because it is a great way to keep fit and is also a big part of my social life since I am part of a walking group, where we all love exploring new destinations.

Before my operation, I never really let my arthritic hip impact my life because I refused to let it, however it was very hard to ignore when I wasn’t able to walk without limping. Although I knew I had the stamina and ability, I wasn’t sure if my body would be able to handle a whole walk, which was very frustrating and disheartening.

Another challenge I faced was using the bus. I found myself having to stand up a couple of minutes before my stop, just to make sure I could move when I needed to. Sometimes when I would try to stand, my body would freeze because of the pain I would feel.

Owing to this, I decided to make an appointment at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, with Mr Rao, who is a fantastic Orthopaedic Consultant. Any concerns I had about having a hip replacement, were quickly forgotten as

Mr Rao explained in a very clear way how straight forward the procedure was and the positive outcomes.

Following my initial appointment, I had my operation three weeks later.

Almost instantly after my procedure, most of the pain I had previously been suffering from had gone and I was able to leave the hospital very shortly afterwards. I even managed to complete a challenging 40 mile walk around the coast of Guernsey, three months later. Following this, I then accomplished the South Downs Way walk with a friend, which was 106 miles and took us nine days to complete.

An achievement I’m particularly proud of was walking up Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Britain. The walk was definitely one of my biggest challenges to date, however with my new hip I had a spring in my step the whole way up.

Before my hip replacement, all I can say is that I suffered from unnecessary pain.

However, now I no longer have to struggle and my quality of life is so much

better. I am very grateful to the Nuffield Health team for the service they provided and I definitely recommend this procedure to anyone who is experiencing unpleasant hip pain.

Community News & Views TWO DECADES of helping visually impaired people have seen a Bognor Regis-based charity's sight care advisors receive national recognition.

4Sight Vision Support's Mandy Whitman and Annie Taylor were put forward for the Life Changing Award at the Visionary Conference in Birmingham - a countrywide event that celebrates the work of sight loss charities in the UK. THeir nomination came as the service they provide in the Chichester and Southlands hospitals of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reached its 20th anniversary.

In that time, Mandy and Annie have made a huge difference to the lives more than 9,000 people with eyesight conditions.

Speaking about the award, senior sight care advisor Mandy, pictured below right with patient Mary Gullick, said: "It is very humbling to be nominated for an award like this and it really wouldn't have been possible without the close working relationship that we have had with the ophthalmologists and nursing staff at the eye clinics over the last 20 years.

"Our role is to support visually impaired patients coming through the clinics after they have been treated by the doctors.

"We do this by offering emotional support and direct practical help in the way of information advice and guidance at the time when each person needs it."

When it started in 1998, the sight care advisor service was ground-breaking. It has been replicated in many eye clinics across the country by other sight lose charities like the RNIB and has become a benchmark for service excellence because it is there to help the patients immediately after they have received a diagnosis.

Masoud Teimory, the chief ophthalmologist at St Richard's Hospital and Southlands, said: "4Sight advisors Mandy and Annie have been highly dedicated and are truly appreciated by the clinical staff. THey offer invaluable expertise to patients..."

EDUCATION watchdogs have again awarded Chichester College the highest approval for its residential service.

Ofsted has awarded an 'outstanding' grade to the provision for the fourth time in a row.

THe latest report, issued last month, says the accommodation for 69 students in the Woodlands and Westgate halls of residence at the campus as well as the 46 with families in the area is the best.

THe inspectors, Jennie Christopher and Paul Taylor, stated: "Students make exceptional progress educationally, socially and emotionally through access to a multi-disciplinary team which provides bespoke wrap around support.

"Residential students thrive at the college. THey mature and learn essential life skills, making them ready for employment or higher education."

Reacting to the report, Andrew Green, executive director at the college, said its accommodation manager, Kate Stenning, and her team had played a large role in achieving the grade.

"THe report is a credit to the whole team at Chichester and really reflects how our staff place students at the heart of all that we do. It is down to their hard work and determination that we can offer all of our students such outstanding support and care," he said.

THe inspection took place over two days and looked at the experience and progress of young people at the college.

THe inspectors met staff and students, as well as their families where possible.

THey also observed staff working with young people, reviewed all paperwork and toured facilities. Ofsted has to inspect the facilities every three years.

MORE than 80 delegates from a range of groups around Bognor Regis and Chichester attended a fair to find out more about funding, pictured above.

THe event was held by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester and saw a host of representatives of community groups in the area, charities and community interest groups take the chance to discover potential sources of support for their work.

Jenny Holmes, VAAC's senior admin and communications worker, said: "THe town mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, opened the fair by welcoming the delegates and highlighting the fantastic support that voluntary groups give to a range of needs in the community.

"He acknowledged the difficulties in funding and encouraged groups to seek out the funders present and ask them for their financial help."

It was backed by Sussex Community Foundation, Arun Local Strategic Partnership and the University of Chichester.

Sir, Middleton-on-Sea Parish Council refers to the article in the Bognor Regis Post (October 19) in which Arun District Council's planning policy team leader (Kevin Owen) is quoted as telling councillors that 'Middleton are going to review their neighbourhood plan but are proposing alternative targets'.

If the article is accurate, then Middleton Parish Council is extremely disappointed that Mr Owen has got his facts wrong. THe parish council has never had a neighbourhood plan and currently has no intention of producing such a document.

THe district council's adopted local plan covering 2011-2031 has a housing requirement of 20,000 new homes to be built throughout the district. Arun is now in the process of trying to allocate at least 1,250 additional homes between the parishes in order to comply with housing requirements made by the planning inspector.

THe first figures seen by this council show Bognor Regis having to take 300 houses while Middleton and Littlehampton have to take 200 each. THe requirement for Middleton is completely out of all proportion with its existing population and number of dwellings and fails to reflect local housing developments which have occurred in past years.

THe reality is that all available land along the coastal strip has been developed in Middleton and Elmer and that the only available land is in north Middleton abutting the A259 which has severe building limitations and which is all owned by West Sussex County Council.

Arun needs to be cognisant of, and allow for, these limitations which include: * Traffic-related issues at Comet Corner, both for Middleton and Yapton * Rural local roads, especially Yapton Road and Ancton Lane, where significant and regular flooding occurs * A major infrastructure deficit with no schools or youth facilities in the parish and the only medical centre at capacity Additionally, all the agricultural land to the east of Yapton Road falls within the Middleton/Climping strategic gap and should not be developed. THis was confirmed by the planning inspector, Mark Dakeyne.

Notwithstanding the comments above, Middleton-on-Sea Parish Council does wish to act constructively with Arun in helping them reach their local plan shortfall, while recognising the many constraints within the parish. Mr Owen has been advised by the parish council's chairman, Cllr Shirley Haywood, and vicechairman, Cllr David Allsopp, that an absolute maximum number of 150 new homes is all that could be considered achievable.

A DANCE Fit Class revived the eighties to help Chichester Stroke Club.

THe session raised funds for the club as well as providing those who took part, pictured above, with the chance to enjoy the music from that decade, boost their health and have fun.

A spokesman for the club said it was grateful to all those who took part.

"THis was an 80s-themed dance workout masterclass enabling those attending to learn upbeat routines, burn calories and improve their fitness, while rasing funds for the local stroke club," he said.

THe event was staged at Goodwood Health Club. Its staff helped to support the stroke club's chairman, Jackie Palmer, stage it.

THe sponsorship money is still being collected and will go towards the 33-year-old stroke club continuing its work.

"Chichester Stroke Club is a unique facility providing aftercare and encouragement to stroke survivors and respite for carers and partners. THe club is run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers. We are currently looking for more volunteers to help at our meetings," the spokesman added.

Bathing machines were beach attractions They were a familiar sight on the town's seafront each summer ONE of the major attractions for early seaside resorts was the bathing machine, a facility that young children today find quite intriguing.

Scarborough was the first seaside resort to have the bathing machines for general use in 1735. King George III used a bathing machine in Weymouth during 1789 and Queen Victoria had her own machine, at Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight.

Both of these bathing machines are on display in their respective museums. While we may believe bathing machines were of one particular design, it is true that they were all of wooden construction, with steps, small windows and were pulled into the water by a horse. However, there were, in fact, many different designs, ranging from those for royalty to those basic machines which were to be seen on the majority of beaches.

Some of the early reports talk of the bathing machines being toys of the rich with the ‘less-well off continuing to bathe naked on unfashionable parts of the beach.’

When I first became interested in bathing machines I researched the internet to see if these contraptions existed anywhere else in the world.

I was surprised to find pictures and descriptions from as far afield as southern Ireland to Uruguay, Ostend to Australia.

As far as the Australian machines are concerned, I have not as yet found any link with the UK, but feel that it may have been a traveller from this country who arrived on a beach and found no such machine in which they could change into their swimming costumes and decided to introduce them to Australia.

However, many of the pictures from Australia show an additional item, that of a small fence around the front of the machines, known as a ‘shark guard!’

Returning to Bognor, the town was lucky to have two proprietors of these machines on our seafront, Mary Wheatland and Frederick Jenkins. Many people are aware of Mary Wheatland, who was born in 1835 in Aldingbourne and moved to Bognor and eventually married in 1857.

However, this week we will concentrate on Frederick Jenkins who operated from the west side of the pier and who built his own bathing machines at his yard in Longford Road from April, 1905.

THus 113 years ago, bathing machines were being constructed in the town to be used by thousands of holidaymakers.

In 1886, when Frederick W. Jenkins married Margaret, he and his new wife decided to move to the growing seaside resort of Bognor,

from Eastbourne, where his builder father also operated bathing machines.

His father, John, gave him a fleet of bathing machines as a wedding present and as Margaret’s favourite colour was blue the Bognor bathing machines were painted in blue and white strips.

Frederick also had machines at the end of West Street and a third site at the east end of the parade opposite Clarence Road.

During the winter months, his machines were stored in a field at Shripney and would be repainted in their familiar blue and white stripes for the summer months, while carrying out other necessary repairs.

THe shire horses used by Frederick were named Major, Beauty and Lion and they were stabled in Longford Road.

THe ticket office beside the pier would open for the summer season from June 1 each year.

On each site there was a wooden ticket office where you could obtain towels and bathing costumes imprinted with JENKINS, which could be hired for a few pence.

THese were rolled together, and stacked on the shelves of the ticket office looking like rows of Swiss rolls.

In the early days, they were washed after use in the seawater and dried on the shingle.

Later, they were taken back to the builder’s yard where they were washed, put through a big outdoor mangle and hung on lines to dry.

A gentleman once recalled his time on the beach in his youth, that ‘one day, with friends I had a swim and then returned to the bathing machine to dress. THen there was a bang on the door and a voice called out, ‘Hold tight’ a horse then pulled us up to the shingle.’

While I was researching bathing machines, I was on holiday in Belgium and was very surprised to find that their 100-cent bank note contained a sketch of a bathing machine.

THis was part of a new series of bank notes in the 1990s.

THis note was to pay tribute to James Ensor, an Ostend painter, at the turn of the last century. Of course, with the introduction of the Euro, this note is now be destined to one or two copies in a museums.

Bathing machines are also used by the Bognor Local History Society as their advertising logo, which can be found on badges and some of the other souvenirs that are on sale today in their museum in West Street.

A bathing machine was on display back in September, 2000, during the ‘Sands of Time’ weekend. THis machine had been renovated in Eastbourne and it is thought it may have been from a design by Frederick Jenkins, who had arrived in Bognor from Eastbourne.

Returning to the bathing machines of Frederick Jenkins, over the years these machines were severely damaged by the constant buffeting of the waves. In 1923, the big machines were replaced by huts which looked like sentry boxes, and the original bathing machines were broken up, with the exception of one, which was retained within the family.

THis bathing machine is still in existence and is currently being restored. However, during an earlier period of restoration in 1978, this machine No. 23 was found to have the signature of Fred Jenkin’s which stated – ‘April 5th, 1905, F.W. Jenkins’.

Relay for Life Committee Member – Cancer Research UK Relay for Life is an overnight community event that celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those lost and rallies everyone to fight back so we can bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Each relay is a community-led, non-athletic event where teams set up camp and take it in turns to walk around a track for up to 24 hours to signify that ‘cancer never sleeps’. These events are only made possible thanks to the dedication and skills of brilliant volunteers, and they’re looking for more amazing people to join the team. They need your passion and skills as part of a committee that will plan, organise and promote a Relay for Life event uniting your community in the fight against cancer.

Youth Support Worker/Volunteer – Chichester Bell Tower Drop-in Centre Volunteers are required to go on rota once every week/ every 2 weeks to attend the Chichester Bell Tower Dropin sessions; activities might include engaging with young people via conversation/gaming/help with homework, serving snacks and keeping the area tidy. You will need to be physically able to lift and carry boxes of poppies and money boxes, able to drive and have access to a vehicle, and able to man collection points.

Sales Assistant – Stonepillow Stonepillow offers shelter, information and support to empower homeless and vulnerable individuals to make positive changes in their lives. They have a large retail warehouse and a high street charity shop; selling predominantly furniture, white goods and electrical products, run with the assistance of clients and other volunteers. All necessary induction and training will be provided. They are very flexible and welcome any volunteers who are happy to devote as little as one morning or afternoon, or they can fit your volunteering around your other commitments (i.e. childcare) so you would be able to come to help us i.e. 10-2. They are open 7 days a week and any help is hugely appreciated!

Struggling Blues look to turn back PostSport the clock and start winning again CHICHESTER RFC's director of rugby, Paul Colley, believes an end to the club's poor start is just around the corner despite the struggles rolling on.

With more than a quarter of the season now gone, Blues sit second bottom of the London One South having won just one of their eight games.

THe latest defeat came at the weekend when a spirited showing on the road in Essex saw Chi fall just short in a 32-31 loss to THurrock.

With London Cornish due to visit Oaklands Park tomorrow (2pm), hopes are high that Chi can finally put an end to their early-season struggles.

Speaking after the latest defeat, Colley said: “THurrock look a decent side and knew how to play these conditions and the circumstances well.

"We are obviously disappointed and I think we did deserve to nick it, but you have to concentrate throughout the game.

"However, this performance was a step forward and everyone at Chichester knows that a really good performance is close."

Key to the better performance in Essex was the return of Sam Drayson and Dane Gingell

to the front row and Martin O`Callaghan and Jon Lindsay to the second row, giving the front five a much more solid look about them.

After falling behind early, Harry Seaman replied with a converted try before Chris Johnson dived over to make it 12-5. Centre Sam Renwick then picked a good line to cross again before the break to put Chi 19-5 up.

Into the second period, Blues belied the strong wind and Johnson crossed again to seal the bonus point try.

But the home side rallied and scored three times to take a 27-26 lead.

A further five pointer followed as Chi were reduced to 14 for an infringement.

But they made the final few minutes interesting as Sam Drayson hammered over to make it 32-31.

Next up is London Cornish, who will pose a similar strong challenge. It will also be a reminder of how far Chi have fallen in the last year.

In 2017, they were flying high, challenging at the other end of the table. But the 43-23 loss to Cornish at home saw them lose touch with the top two.

Water-way to finish a Venice marathon!

TONE ZONE runner Alice Slater was running on water as she completed an international marathon with a difference.

THe Bognor Regis-based runner was among thousands of runners to flock to the Italian city of Venice to run 26 miles in a city renowned for being built on stilts.

But torrential downpours had seen the normally tranquil streets and awe-inspiring bridges flooded - forcing participants, including the elite field, to splash their way to the finish line in St Mark's Square.

Alice took the ankle-deep water in her stride though, splashing her way through the final two miles to finish in 5 hours 31 minutes.

THere were better conditions closer to home when a number of Tone Zone runners took part in the Beachy Head marathon.

THe race, which starts in Eastbourne, is known as one of the toughest around, being off road and very hilly.

Nature, too, had some impact on this race, with a large crack in the cliff forcing the route

to be diverted slightly.

THe Tone Zone cohort of Michael Manwill, Cheryl Laing, Sam Yates and Wendy Cannon all performed well though.

In his third marathon this year Manwill finished in a very good time of 4:23.

Laing, who doesn’t seem to stop with marathons, finished just under the six hour mark. Yates and Cannon helped each other round the course both finishing in 7:10.

Also running on the South Coast was Joan Woolley, who took part in the Brighton & Hove Albion Stadium Marathon, which was also the first held at a Premier League ground.

Woolley crossed the line in 6:17 Midweek saw Chris Gallagher get in the halloween spirit at the Ghostober 5 Miles of Terror race near Portsmouth. He shrugged off the terrors and flew through to take second place overall with a time of 35:49.

Tony Hancock continued his fine running this year as he ran the Jersey Spartan Autumn 10k this weekend in a time of 45:16.

RUGBY: Bognor RFC will be looking to bounce back in style after slipping to just their second defeat of the season.

THe Purple and Greens returned pointless from their long trip to the Isle of Wight as they fell to a 36-19 defeat to Sandown & Shanklin last weekend.

With Bognor now sitting in fourth, five points behind second-place Sandown, they will be out to avenge the loss at home to Portsmouth IIs at Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (TBC).

Sandown was always going to be a tough place to visit, even with a fullstrength side.

But a string of injuries in the forwards meant Bognor were struggling to pull a side together for the clash so the defeat did not come as a big surprise.

After falling 17-3 behind, tries from Josh Burgess and Dan Robinson saw them take back two scores across the Solent with them.

Coach Scott Barlow, while being delighted with the positive attitude showed by his weakened side, will be hoping several of his senior players will regain their fitness over the next few weeks to enable Bognor to have a strong run-in to Christmas.

In-form Chi prepare for royal visit with two wins from two

Falcons soar to league win CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club ended their regular season on a high coming away as Solent League Division 2 champions.

With a 10 & 3 record and having beaten all but one of the Division 1 teams, the Falcons pipped Southampton Spitfires to the top spot by two points to take the title and promotion to Division 1 for the 2019 season.

Falcons manager David Morris said: "THe team have worked so hard all season at practice, and they should be proud of themselves for this long-awaited achievement."

"THey hit more runs than any other team in the entire league, let alone our division, and conceded less runs than everybody else, too.

"We’re also seeing our older juniors now graduating into the seniors squad and setting a great standard.

"THis is a pattern I’d like to continue and push even harder with next year.

"We’ll have to compete at a higher level more regularly in Division 1 but we have nothing to fear and I’m looking forward to the challenge!"

To add to their success, two Falcons received prestigious trophies at the Solent League

end-of-season awards ceremony. Outfielder Hettie McNeil was presented with the Division 2 Female MVP trophy for her consistent outstanding performance on the field – this was voted for by opposing captains and game umpires.

David Morris was inducted into the Solent League’s Hall of Fame for his services to softball and baseball, sharing the honour with Southsea Sharks' Ed Wakeman, who tragically lost his life in June.

THis year has seen huge growth in the younger age groups at the Falcons organisation.

Junior fastpitch team continues to flourish and a new little league baseball club for 7-10 year-olds ran on Sunday mornings in Oaklands Park through the summer.

THe seniors section has also expanded to include a fastpitch softball team.

After cutting their teeth at Chichester’s own fastpitch tournament, they headed to Paris in September to compete in the annual Tournoi de Fleur.

THe Falcons’ next priority is to form a second team to enter the league and tournaments.

CHICHESTER City warmed up for their return to the FA Vase in style, winning two from two in the last week.

Miles Rutherford's side welcome Hellenic Premier outfit Windsor to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) for the second round match in the national knockout competition.

After making it to the last 16, City will be looking for a positive result against a side from the royal borough who are mid-table and play in a lurid green, red and white Union Jack kit.

Chi will follow that match up with a trip to SCFL Division One side Hailsham Town in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.30pm).

City ensured they had perfect preparations for the Vase by defeating Crawley Down Gatwick at home last weekend.

With the Lions still unbeaten in the league after three months of football, they will be firm favourites to win and make it through to the third round of the national knockout competition.

Chairman Tony Shea has always been clear that he wants the club to go as far as they can in every competition they enter.

While the club has lifted a number of county cups in recent seasons, an extended run in the FA Vase has so far eluded the Lions.

But, with Pagham sitting third, five places above tomorrow's opponents, the odds will be very much stacked in their favour.

THe same can be said for the Sussex Senior Cup second round match against local rivals Selsey on Tuesday (7.30pm) when a division will separate the sides.

Lions will also be full of confidence after defeating second-place Horsham YMCA at home last weekend.

In what was a tight game, Pagham goalkeeper James Binfield pulled off a series of fine saves before George Gaskin's late strike sealed the 1-0 win.

THat was followed by a 6-1 win against SCFL Division One side Billingshurst in the RUR Cup third round on Tuesday.

Bognor boss is not worried as winless streak extends to five Next Game

LEATHERHEAD (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says he is unworried about the Rocks' recent run of five games.

THe streak of three draws and two defeats has put a slight dampener on what has been a bright start to life back in the Isthmian Premier for the Nyewood Lane side.

Two of those matches came in the last week, as Bognor took two matches and a penalty shootout to overcome Isthmian One South Central side Bracknell Town in the FA Trophy.

THeir reward is a trip to Southern League South side Walton Casuals next week (November 10) in the next round of the national knockout competition.

Before then, Bognor return to league action, heading to struggling Leatherhead tomorrow (3pm), and then hosting SCFL Division One side Seaford Town in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But, despite the poor run, the Rocks boss said he was happy with the performances that his young side continued to produce.

Pearce said: "In both games we should have comfortably put the game to bed, there's no doubt about that. But our finishing is not great at the moment and we are not defending very well. But between the two penalty areas we are ever so pleased with the lads.

"THey are trying to do what me and Robbie ask, which means we are creating chances but, unfortunately, we are struggling to

convert a good percentage of those."

Rocks highlighted their wasteful nature in front of goal during the two matches against Bracknell.

While their opponents took their chances, Bognor spurned plenty and had to rely on a late Brad Lethbridge goal to seal a 2-2 draw in the first encounter.

In the replay, Rocks fought from two down with Calvin Davies and a late Jimmy Wild effort levelling things up. It was then over to Dan Lincoln to save three penalties to secure a 3-2 win on spot kicks.

If there was a bright spot, it was the performance of Mason Walsh who took the man of the match award during the replay.

Pearce said: "Mason is a very exciting player. He does the hardest part of going past defenders ever so well but I still think there's improvement he can make in terms of the final thing he does, whether that's a cross, shot or pass."

Next for the fifth-placed Rocks is a trip to third-bottom Leatherhead to face a side who have struggled for goals more than Bognor in recent weeks - with their tally of eight the lowest in the division.

Pearce said: "THey will be as good as Bracknell so it will not be easy. It will be difficult game. Our problem is making sure we have a fit first team squad available. If we do, then we will be very confident."

Injury list is worry for Pearce ROCKS fans thought they had used up all of their bad luck last season.

A mixture of a range of injuries, failure to secure signings and lack of goals meant that Bognor dropped out of the National South.

Fast forward a few months and it seems one of those issues is starting to creep back on manager Jack Pearce - with half the first team squad struggling with knocks.

Defenders Keaton Wood, Corey Heath and Joe Dandy, along with forwards Dan Smith and Jimmy Wild have all missed games in recent weeks.

Skipper Harvey Wild is set to join the quintet on the treatment table after the Bracknell matches while Jimmy Muitt and Chad Field are also nursing injuries.

With more than half of the squad struggling, Pearce said that much of the focus would be making sure there were enough players available for tomorrow's match against Leatherhead.

THe veteran manager revealed that this might mean dipping into the transfer market.

He said: "Given where we are, it looks like I will have to sign a few this week to keep us going. Quite where they come from I'm not sure yet but we will see where we end up."

WE MAY not have won a match for a little while but it's not all doom and gloom down at the Nye Camp.

Taking into account the number of injuries we have at present, I am impressed by our team's performances in recent games.

Corey, Keaton and Joe Dandy are all out at the back while I think it's quite obvious that we have missed the killer instinct of Dan Smith playing as striker.

Still there's lots to be positive about - we are still fifth in the league and, thanks to great resilience, remain in the FA Trophy.

We have shown great character to come back against Bracknell Town home and away in what is the premier knockout competition for non-league clubs.

I have to say the Robins provided a tough test for our young side in both games.

At Larges Lane, we went behind fairly early but got an equaliser through a neat Jimmy Muitt goal after a chipped pass by Calvin Davies.

We all know Bognor can play the passing game but many of our goals actually come from direct passes.

Not quite route one football but that final ball over the top or a chipped pass from midfield can sometimes pay off.

But we let another goal in from a defensive error which meant we were 2-1 down at half time.

For me, after all of those chances in the first half and not taking them, I felt we would go on to lose the game.

But the team showed real guile and, in the end, Bradley Lethbridge’s super strike after turning inside the box right at the end was fantastic to see and this gave us a chance in the replay back at Nyewood Lane.

It was very much the same story in the replay but this time Rocks went behind 2-0 early on.

Bracknell started brightly but I thought we came back at them and created at least five chances one on one with goalkeeper, Mark Scott, who was outstanding across the two matches.

Davies netted on 37 minutes, giving us hope in the second half. He has divided opinion, but on 69 minutes on came substitute Jimmy Wild to bundle in on 88 minutes to take it to extra time. Lovely stuff!

We created more chances in the 30 minutes of extra time but failed to take them as Bracknell looked tired in the latter stages.

And so it came to the dreaded penalties.

I feared for us to win it as their goalkeeper was playing so well.

But, in the end, we won it 3-2 as Muitt, Doug Tuck and Mason Walsh converted their spot kicks confidently, whereas Bracknell missed their first two penalties and managed to score only two.

Relief was my overriding emotion following this win.

Fair play to Bracknell who will feel they should have beat us back at their place but in cup football you just never can be certain what is going to happen.

Next up in the FA Trophy will see Rocks travel to Walton Casuals on Saturday, November 10.

I am looking forward to that one and hope that by then we will have some players back fit!

But its back to league action tomorrow as we head to Leatherhead at their Fetcham Grove ground.

Situated by the River Mole in Surrey, this game will be another not to miss!

THe Tanners are currently in the relegation zone with just nine points but have plenty of games in hand.

THey like to play passing football like us so it will be nice to get a win there!
