Town's Xmas is a real cracker CUSTOMERS are flocking back to Bognor Regis town centre.

Latest footfall figures for the shopping area show an astounding rise of just over 10,000 people - or 12.5 per cent - at the same time last year.

THe total number of visitors in the middle of this month reached 91,812.

THis bucks the general national trend of shoppers shunning bricks and mortar outlets in favour of online buying.

Paul Wells, chairman of the town's Business Improvement District, said the increased popularity could be seen in the statistics for last THursday. It showed 15,764 visitors compared to just 12,714 on the same day last year.

"THis is a fantastic result, particularly when the weather has been working so hard against us all. THese figures can only provide a snapshot of how well the town centre is doing," said Mr Wells.

"But they give us a benchmark to let us know how we are doing and the data we use comes from Springboard, which uses the same method across the country."

Mr Wells said one reason for the surge in visitors was the range of activities staged by the BID's directors on 14 days in the month up to Christmas Eve. "THis is the first year that a programme of activities has been held in the town centre throughout December.

"We have also had a number of restaurants open this year, which is also bringing people into the town. THe twohours free parking scheme in three car parks, continuing next year, pulls people into the town centre as well," he said.

Hospital staff's 2019 best wishes HOSPITAL workers in Bognor Regis have thanked their patients for their support.

THe rheumatology employees at the town's war memorial hospital said they wished them all the best in 2019.

Sister Maggie Walsh said on behalf of the team: "THe rheumatology team at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital would like to take this opportunity to thank our patients for all their support during the past year.

"We would like to take this time to wish everyone a happy new year."

Meanwhile, health service bosses have urged the town's residents to have their say about the hospital.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is encouraging them to show their support for the service by joining as a member. THe trust provides community services in people's homes, in clinics and at the hospital.

Members of the trust can help it to improve services and contribute to the running of the local NHS. Membership is free and is open to anyone aged over 12.

Peter Horn, the trust's chairman, said: "Our membership plays an important role in our organisation.

"THey are part of the conversation as we try to improve our services, they champion their communities and help shape the way the local NHS works.

"We would like your readers to consider joining this wonderfully diverse trust.

Our teams, which are made up of people from all walks of life, provide a huge range of NHS services across Sussex.

"Local services in Bognor Regis include our minor injuries unit, musculoskeletal service and bedded wards at the local hospital, plus community nursing, health visiting and school nursing services. We have set ourselves an ambitious target to reach 6,000 members in just a few months.

"In the process, we would really like to attract, in particular, even more women and people from black, Asian and minority ethic backgrounds."

In the past 12 months, the trust's community nurses cared for more than 51,000 people, visiting them at home or supporting them over the telephone helping people to stay well and in their own homes. Its children's teams, during the same period, visited 21,500 new born babies and their families.

THe trust's hospitals - which also include Midhurst, Arundel and Horsham - had 4,300 patient admissions in 2017.

THeir minor injuries units, and the urgent treatment centre in Crawley, treated 123,000 patients during that time.

Overall, trust clinicians had 2.6 million contacts with adult or child patients in the past 12 months.

Successful carol concert by college fills Felpham church STUDENTS, parents and staff from Felpham Community College were joined by residents for their latest popular carol concert.

St Mary's Church was full for the occasion to create a magical festive atmosphere for the traditional evening of carols and musical performances.

Mark Anstiss, the college's headteacher, said: "THis event proves popular every year and it is always a lovely festive end to a successful term, as well as showcasing the wide range of musical talent we have at the college."

As well as the concert, the college

hosted a Christmas fair, an in-house pantomime and an end of term nonuniform charity collection day to create a busy few weeks.

"We hope the local community enjoyed the carol concert and Christmas fair as much as the college's students, parents and staff," he added.

THe concert included performances from the school choir, accompanied by sixth former Harry Wells on the piano, as well as the college band and a cappella student group.

THe staff choir sang When a Child is Born and the involvement of the congregation was encouraged.

Festive show by students is a hit with its audience SCORES of students at a Bognor Regis school showcased their talents with a successful festive performance.

Pupils from Year 7 to Year 13 at THe Regis School performed on stage to an audience of staff, students, parents, carers and friends as part of its performing arts Christmas celebration.

THe event was organised and run by the school's performing arts faculty and included a range of seasonal work.

THis included dance, music and drama to the delight of those watching.

A school spokesman said: "From drama, there was a devised piece of theatre called Behind the scenes of a Christmas Show created and performed by the drama club and their sixth form leaders."

A comedy nativity sketch by the Year 12 drama company and a pantomime based on the story of Cinderella, performed by the Year 13 theatre company completed the dramatic content of the evening.

"THese lively performances got the audience participating, involved and feeling in the Christmas spirit," said the spokesman.

Dance students contributed a beautiful and emotive piece to the Christmas ballard, The Power of Love, from the Signature Elite members of the school's dance club, choreographed by student leaders.

THe spokesman said: "THis was followed later by the Year 9 dance class, who contributed a lively and cultural carnival-style piece entitled, A Brazilian Celebration, to get everyone in the party mood."

On the music side of the evening, the school's choir performed two pieces Somewhere only we know - as well as a blended version of Winter Wonderland and Santa Comes To Town.

"THe sixth form musicians prepared and performed lovely covers of well-known Christmas numbers, Last Christmas, and Step into Christmas."

THe spokesman added: "A huge well done to all student performers as well as student leaders who were involved in creating what was a lovely festive evening.

THank you also to everyone who came along."

Golf day success AN ANNUAL golf day in memory of a Felpham teenager has topped £50,000 for charity.

Proceeds of the latest staging of the event which recalls Daniel Hoare have been added up to take the total amount raised for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to £53,798.

THe total has been raised in just seven events following Daniel's sudden death in 2011.

Daniel's father, Donald Hoare, said: "When we started this, I thought it would lose momentum after a few

years. But, it keeps growing, which is all down to Daniel's friends who make this event so successful every year.

"I am so grateful for all the support that we have received over the past seven years.

"I thought it might raise a few thousands pounds. It's just so overwhelming to know that the total now stands at over £50,000.

"It was devastating to lose Daniel, but this event gives us a chance to remember and celebrate his life.

"By helping to raise money for the

BHF's research, we hope to stop other families having to go through heartbreak."

Daniel, 18, died in November, 2011, as he was running to catch a train in Worthing. A post-mortem revealed he had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition that causes walls of the heart to become thickened.

After the tragedy, Mr Hoare decided with Daniel's close friends, James Ashman and James McLean, to organise the golf day at Bognor Regis Golf Club for the BHF each year.

THe latest event saw 152 golfers turn up to play in poor weather conditions to raise £6,187 to take the total raised to the current amount.

Nicky Seevaraj, BHF's fundraising manager for Sussex, said: "We are so very grateful to Donald, his family, and all of Daniel's friends for continuing to raise such fantastic amounts each year.

"Heart conditions affect thousands of people across the UK, and we believe that research holds the key to a future where no-one dies prematurely from cardiovascular disease.

"All the money raised in Daniel's memory will be used to fund the science that can help us win the fight against heart disease and stop it devastating the lives of so many families."

MP joins fight to help geese MP NICK Gibb has pledged to back the Brent geese in Pagham.

Mr Gibb was asked to intervene in the matter of protecting the birds in the face of major housebuilding schemes close to Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

Campaigners fear the geese, which spend winter in some of the fields around the harbour, could be forced away by the scale of the building.

Giles Binyon, a committee member of the Pagam group (Pagham And Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement), urged Mr Gibb to get involved in its campaign to ensure the geese are protected.

Mr Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "In the area surrounding the Pagham Harbour nature reserve, it is important to do all we can to protect the natural feeding grounds for wild birds.

"THe issue of Brent geese has been a concern of mine for some time and one I have raised with appropriate authorities in the past. I have taken up Mr Binyon's correspondence regarding the mitigation area with both Natural England and Arun District Council and will be following this matter closely."

As reported, Arun has allocated three sites around Pagham for strategic housing allocations. Applications for two of the sites have been approved by Arun.

One concerns 23 hectares south of Summer Lane on which 400 homes put forward by Hanbury (PM) Ltd have been given the go-ahead by councillors.

Mr Binyon said Pagam feared the mitigation plan recommended by Natural England and agreed as part of the

planning approval would be insufficient to ensure Brent geese would continue to visit Pagham each winter.

His calculations suggested the area of foraging land available to them would shrink from the current 18.7ha to 16.73ha after the Summer Lane site is developed.

"THis blow to the Brent geese would be, of course, on top of the increased pressure and disturbance from people and their pets," Mr Binyon told Mr Gibb.

"THis unprecedented assault on one of England's jewels must be resisted.

And, despite the best efforts of the local community, it looks like you could become the last line of defence on what, in any person's view, is quite obviously an appalling catalogue of decisions.

"THis is not mitigation but, plain and simple, wildlife eradication. And it is happening on your watch. Please get involved."

Mr Binyon said the Brent geese mitigation plan from the developers, guided by Natural England, relied on securing a field which would be planted with goose foraging vegetation to replace that lost to the development.

It was Pagam's view that, even if this was achieved, the field was not only smaller than the current ones but less than a third of it was suitable for planting suitable vegetation.

THis disparity could be accounted for by the fact the existing fields would not be useful for geese every year, he added.

But the measures also failed to take into account the reduction in available foraging from the other sites, particularly Hook Lane, whch are due to be developed.

Swing will enable youngsters with disabilities to play in park A UNIQUE piece of play equipment has been installed in Hotham Park in Bognor Regis.

THe wheelchair swing was put in the park's play area recently and is fully accessible for wheelchair users and is the first of its kind to be installed in a play area in the Arun district.

THe swing was chosen in response to comments from surveys of the users of the play area which asked for play equipment suitable for young people with disabilities.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "We are

aware of the demand in the local area for wheelchair accessible facilities.

"So, we hope the new swing will bring hours of enjoyment for youngsters in the district who use a wheelchair."

THe Ability Swing was designed, made and installed by GL Jones Playgrounds Ltd. Having contributed to the recent play area upgrade, the Hotham Park Heritage Trust is also said to be delighted to see the new swing in place.

Its arrival follows on from recent work by the council to upgrade play areas across the district.

A CANINE Christmas party was enjoyed by the pets of members of Bognor Regis & District Training Club.

THe ever popular event attracted a large number of club members and their dogs to Felpham Memorial Village Hall for a fun evening of 'doggy' games.

Club press officer Phil Lewis said: "THe club also made a presentation of £1,700 to the Search Dogs Sussex charity.

THis was raised at the club's annual companion dog show held in June."

THe cheque was presented by the show's secretary, Alison Formaggia, to search dog handler Darren Yeates and Nicole Gaffney, who is the organisation's secretary.

Paul Hammond was alarmed to discover Trotsy, a black small miniature terrier the size of a chichuahua, was missing when he went back to her after going shopping.

He said: “She is a highly affable little animal and a good-natured dog. She is a real companion to me.

“I’m saddened by the whole situation. It’s hard to deal with.

I would like to think someone is looking after her.”

Mr Hammond, 58, left Trotsy tied up to the railing next to the trolleys outside Lidl in the Bognor Regis Retail Park in Shripney Road about 1pm on December 13.

He was inside for about 15 minutes, only to find Trotsy had gone when he returned to her.

He spent 15 minutes searching the site’s car park and asked some 12 people if they had seen her.

He reported his loss to Sussex Police but was told Trotsy’s absence was regarded as a missing dog rather than a stolen one.

Mr Hammond has asked anyone who sees Trotsy to contact him on 01243 681046 with the details.

College panto is a festive success SCROOGE came to life in Felpham Community College's latest panto.

More than 30 students took to the stage to bring to life the traditional tale of the Dickens character.

THe extra-curricular rehearsals for the show earlier this month started for the students from years 7, 8 and 9 back in September led by two members of staff of the college's drama department.

THe final evening performance took place at the college to an audience of parents, students and staff members.

One of the Year 9 students involved, Chris Sargent, said: "THis is the second year I have taken part and it's been lots of fun.

"I played the 'spirit of Christmas present' and my family came and watched. I want to take GCSE drama, so this is good to be involved with as it gives us experience."

Tatiana Elkins was another of the Year 9 performers.

She said: "I have been in the college panto every year since I was in Year 7.

"I am disappointed we don't get to do it this year as it is only for key stage 3 students but we do get to do an end of year show instead, which will be good.

"Many family who came to watch the panto said it was really good. I played three parts - Bob Crachit, a janitor and a guest.

"It has been fun doing all the rehearsals and working with students who aren't in my classes."

A college spokesman said: "THe students have worked really hard with rehearsals and learning lines at home and their enthusiasm has been brilliant.

"All their efforts have paid off as it was a fantastic pantomime which was enjoyed by all."

Students help college's fair YEAR 7 students at Felpham Community College ran a variety of stalls at its annual festive fair.

THey hosted games and activities to help to raise money at the event towards the end of last term.

THeir stalls were among the range which filled the college's hall and library with a selection of local craft products and the exclusive college festive shop.

THe annual Christmas raffle was held at the end of the evening with some fantastic prizes won.

Festive entertainment was provided by the music department, along with

hot chocolate and shortbread - a firm favourite on a cold winter's evening.

Michelle Kelly, the college's acting deputy headteacher, said: "THe fair was a delightful way to end a busy term.

"Year 7 students worked really hard organising their stalls and it was great to see students getting involved on the evening and having fun.

"THank you to the students, parents and carers, staff and local community who supported the fair and the raffle."

Numerous companies donated raffle prizes to make the draw an enticing one to enter.

` Road to be closed ONE OF Yapton's busiest roads will be closed next month for railway safety works.

North End Road/Yapton Road will be shut for ten days from next Friday to allow Network Rail to begin the final stage of an upgrade to full barriers at its level crossing.

Diversionary routes will be in place.

THe closure will also see trains services along the coastway west line across the crossing suspended on January 12, 13 and 14.

THe work is part of Network Rail's railway upgrade plan to provide a safer and more reliable railway service for passengers.

Its south east managing director for the south east, John Halsall, said when the work was announced: "Yapton is one of the most misused crossings in the south east, with drivers either ignoring or trying to beat the red lights, queuing over the crossing or swerving around the barriers as trains approach."

Red light enforcement cameras were installed in 2017 by the British Transport Police, with hundreds of motorists being prosecuted for dangerous driving.

An average of 3.7 incidents still occurred every day, he said. But a full barrier crossing, instead of the current half barrier, means the barriers will be down for longer.

He said: "What a fantastic Christmas season here in Bognor Regis. All credit to the BID team for the amazing attractions in and around London Road.

"I know it’s mainly aimed at children but we have certainly enjoyed all the events put on. Everything has been so well advertised this year, too.

"I also enjoyed the Walk of Witness put on by local churches. THank you so much to all the organisers."

But Mr Wells said it was important to keep the momentum up.

"We can't be complacent. THere are a lot of pressures on high streets and we are looking forward to 2019.

"Times are challenging - economically, politically and technologically - and we are working hard to deliver the initiatives, events and services identified in the business plan to support

businesses and keep Bognor Regis high street relevant for today's consumers," he added. *One blow to the town centre is the impending closure of the Burton's menswear shop. THis is expected to shut next February.

Mr Wells said: "I think this is more of a nationally-driven decision than anything to do with our town centre.

"It is a disappointment Burtons are closing but it is up to us to encourage a new company to occupy their shop by creating a vibrant town centre."

Burtons has been open since 1937 and the building's foundation stone can still be seen in the London Road precinct.

Pram-packed event creates new record at Pagham's annual antics f The Lions' winning pub team

f The Where's Wally? ladies' runners-up team A PRAM-TASTIC achievement saw more entrants than ever take part in Pagham's Boxing Day traditional fun.

The 234 individuals ensured the Boxing Day pram race lived up to its status as the world's longest running event of its kind.

Wednesday's antics were the 73rd to be held - and continued the history of mixing the unlikelist of characters - from The Beatles to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and pirates to Barbie dolls.

It was The Fab Four who claimed the number one spot as their classic animated film, Yellow Submarine, made waves among the 54 entries.

John, Paul, George and Ringo and their look of '68 were recreated by local residents Len Cooper, Christopher Pigden, Tom Sprule and Mark Gordon to claim top prize in the fancy dress category.

The 50th anniversary of the film with its clutch of famous songs prompted the entry. Its timeless quality was shown as the fellow competitors sung the title song as the team collected their prize.

Len said: “The film was a cartoon, which gave us a few challenges for the characters. So we decided to become The Beatles with the help of some homemade costumes.

“It has been great fun. It was great to hear everyone singing the words of the song.”

It was his 14th year of taking part and the first time he had clinched a top prize after several second and third places.

“It's nice to get the recognition for what we've done and certainly makes the effort worthwhile but it's all about the day, the community and raising money

for charity,” he said.

The race showed the allure of wearing fancy dress and downing pints of beer at The Lion, The Lamb and the Pagham Beach Cafe along the three-mile route remained as strong as ever.

Several thousand spectators again lined the course and it was hoped by the organisers the bucket collection would top £3,000 for the first time. This will be added to the proceeds from a series of events during the year to take the total raised for good causes in the area to some £15,000.

Organising committee vice-chairman Tim Holland is the longest-serving of those involved at 42 years.

He said: “It has again been a successful year. The race has got its own momentum and gets better and better every year.

"We have tried to improve things but we don't want to lose the fact the race is a bit of fun around the houses on Boxing Day.” The race, as usual, was split between those determined to finish in the fastest time of around 15 minutes and those whose fancy dress was more important.

First home were Bromley couple Sarah and Andy Milne, both 39, as Team Mexico. Sarah grew up on the nearby Aldwick Bay Estate and was determined to beat her brother's second place after being unplaced on her previous attempt.

“My motivation was to beat my brother and it feels amazing to have done that,” she said. Andy said: “The last stretch was awesome. Seeing all the family there was really good.”

The first women to finish were Mario and Luigi, 18-year-old debutants, and

Pagham residents Alice Cox-Rusbridge and Jennifer Harmsworth. Jennifer said: “This is the first year we have been able to take part and we wanted to win it.”

Princess Fifi, aka Fiona Wilson, of Bosham, pictured middle right, celebrated her 60th birthday in style – on top of a pram pushed by Ollie and Nick Wilson – and being serenaded by the crowd when they collected their trophies..

She said: “Coming to watch the race was my Boxing Day treat as a child.”

The 11-strong Baz Cabs team commemorated the life of Bognor Regis man Barry Atkinson, 76, who died on Christmas Day last year. His daughters, Kim Chaffey, 52, and Kirstee Porter, 43, were among those who ran.

Kim said: “He used to come to the pram race every year and we have done it a few times. He said Boxing Day was always his favourite day of the year.”

Kirstee said: “It was brilliant to take part in my dad's memory. He would have absolutely loved it and would have thought it was fun.”

Australian couple Jo, 42, and Mark Wiseman, travelled 12,500 miles from Perth to take part with Mark's best friend, Pagham Cricket Club chairman Gary Young, 53, as cricketing kangaroos.

Mark, 55, said: “I come from Bognor Regis so I know about the race. This time last year we were sitting in 38C heat on the beach. It was well worth coming here.

"The community feeling, the atmosphere and the participation has been fantastic.”

Visitors learn about Christmas traditions throughout the ages

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A TRADITIONAL Christmas became a reality for visitors to the Weald and Downland Living Museum on Boxing Day and yesterday.

From Tudor to Victorian times, a historic festive treat awaited visitors to the Singleton museum.

Traditionally decorated houses reflected the spirit of Christmas through the ages. The historic homes were decorated to reflect how this special time of year has been celebrated over the centuries.

Michelle Cox and her sister, Lucy Plant, had been to see their family in Bracklesham for Christmas.

Lucy had seen the event and decided to take her children, Natalie, aged seven, and Michael, aged five, to the museum.

She said: "I told Michelle about it last month and we thought it would be great for the kids. We've left the rest of the family at home to relax but we wanted to get the kids outside.

"It's a bit more fun for them then just a walk, and it's educational, too.

We originally come from Lancashire, so we've never been here before. Our parents moved this way about four years ago to retire by the sea!"

Her sister, Michelle, added: "It is really pretty here with the Christmas decorations and all the different homes have been decorated in their own unique way."

Attendees enjoyed a warm welcome in the medieval House from North Cray, with its log fire and traditional greenery decorations. This building is a classic medieval

hall-house of four bays, with a central open hall between service and solar ends.

The timbers are painted red, following evidence that this was done when the house was built originally, probably in the 15th century.

The team at the museum served spiced apple juice as well as spiced biscuits.

Sarah Green and her husband, Tim, took their two sons, Freddie, aged four, and Sam, aged six.

Tim said: "We were going to have a quiet day at home, but the kids were still excited this morning so we came here as a last minute plan. It's really nice to get some fresh air after a day being inside.

"We come here quite a bit throughout the year so both Sam and Freddie know it well here. It's nice to be able to let them run about safely and learn as well."

Sarah also feels the museum is a great place to go. She said: "The children really do pick up on a lot of things when they come

here. They point out things in the houses and grounds that we would otherwise miss! It's been a great way to spend Boxing Day." The next event at the museum will be their annual wassailing day on Saturday, January 19. Visitors can watch and take part in a number of traditional and craft activities with a wassailing theme between 12pm and 3pm.

• Don’t chuck away those Christmas leftovers, put them to good use and get rid of anything still in date by creating snacks for the party.

• You can easily turn round, white balloons into clocks by adding number stickers and glittery gold clock hands. For a pop of colour, surround the clock balloons with

gold, pink and black balloons.

• For a festive treat, sculpt puff pastry into the date of the new year.

You can pair these treats with a savoury sauce, or you can sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on them to turn them into a dessert.

• Wish your guests good fortune in the new year with dipped fortune cookies. The cookies feature a sparkly gold dip, a rainbow sprinkle dip and a white sprinkle dip. Simply dip the end in milk chocolate and then your choice of sprinkle • Add a sparkle to your champagne glasses by painting them with glittery gold, green, red or blue paint. To paint the glasses, simply dab two to three coats of paint onto a glass.

• Add a creative twist to your cheese and cracker plate by placing black olive ties and buttons onto each

cheese wedge! You can use your favourite type of soft cheese, or you can use an assortment of cheeses.

Recipes for 2019

New Year Cheesecake Ingredients: • 130g butter, melted, plus extra for the tin • 300g chocolate digestive biscuits • 150g milk chocolate • 150g dark chocolate • 250g mascarpone • 300g cream cheese • 50g icing sugar • 25g malted milk drink powder • 25g hot chocolate powder • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 300ml double cream • 150g Maltesers (100g chopped, 50g whole), plus a handful to decorate • 100g chocolate buttons, roughly chopped Method: 1. Butter and line a 23cm springform

cake tin. Blitz the biscuits in a food processor to form fine crumbs, then add the butter and blitz again. Tip the biscuit mixture into the tin and press down firmly with the back of a spoon. Chill in the fridge while you make the filling.

2. In separate bowls, melt the milk and dark chocolate over pans of gently simmering water. Alternatively, melt in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each interval until melted. Set aside to cool.

3. Use a hand whisk to mix the mascarpone, cream cheese, icing sugar, malted milk drink powder, hot chocolate powder and vanilla extract until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk the cream, then fold into the mascarpone mixture. Add half the mixture to each of the chocolate bowls, stirring until well combined.

Stir half the chopped Maltesers, whole Maltesers and buttons into the milk chocolate mixture; stir the rest into the dark chocolate mixture.

4. Spoon the dark chocolate mixture onto the biscuit base. Top with the milk chocolate mixture and smooth over the top. Chill overnight.

Decorate with Maltesers before serving.

New Year Cocktail Ingredients: • 1/4 c. semisweet chocolate chips, melted • 3 candy canes, crushed • 6 oz. peppermint schnapps, divided • 1 bottle champagne or prosecco • 6 candy canes, whole Method: 1. Pour melted chocolate onto a small plate. Pour crushed candy canes onto a separate plate. Dip rims of champagne flutes first in chocolate, then in crushed candy canes to coat.

2. Add an ounce of peppermint schnapps to each glass, then top with champagne or prosecco.

Garnish with full candy canes before serving.

Home has a very merry Christmas CHRISTMAS comes just once a year.

So, everyone at Chalcraft Hall Care Home wanted to make the most of the special occasion.

And they certainly did that with a jampacked series of days full of smiles, surprises and seasonal cheer.

Christmas Day itself saw its staff and the residents and some of their families enjoy a day of celebration.

A spokeswoman said everyone at the home in Chalcraft Lane joined in to create an atmosphere that summed up the festive spirit.

“We made sure that all our residents had someone to give them their gifts,” she said.

“They all enjoyed a nice Christmas dinner as well.”

The fun will continue at the home in Chalcraft Lane on new year’s day with a roast dinner and a party after the residents have the chance to stay up to see in 2019.

December has seen a packed calendar at the home. It included a day with entertainment from singer Joe Butt, two raffles and a prize draw along with competitions.

A carol service at nearby Holy Cross Church and carol concerts from young

singers at Bartons Primary School and Southway Primary School also provided plenty of Christmas fun.

The Alzheimer’s Society also benefited from an elf day which brought Santa’s helpers to life.

A Christmas jumper day formed part of the fun and festivities as well. Residents had the chance to decorate mince pies to get them in the Christmas mood and enjoy tea parties as well.

“Christmas is a special time of year and we wanted all our residents to have a good time and enjoy themselves,” the spokeswoman said.

“Everyone had fun and we look forward to having some more special days in the new year.”

Chalcraft Hall has 20 bedrooms and provides residential care in a homely and friendly environment to people over 65 who are living with dementia.

The home also has a lounge and a dining room as well as a garden with the scope for plenty of enjoyment in the better weather.

Group Scout Leader - Funtington & West Stoke – West Sussex Scouts

Funtington & West Stoke Scout Group are looking for a volunteer with management experience who wants to do more in their community, with good interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate and inspire others. Funtington & West Stoke Scout Group is part of Chichester Scout District and offers a vibrant, exciting and adventurous programme for young people aged 6-14. The group operates from Funtington Village Hall and provides Scouting to 50 young people supported by a team of 16 volunteer leaders, assistants and administrators. The group consists of a Beaver Scout Colony, Cub Scout Pack and Scout Troop with an executive committee (trustee board) responsible for the management of finance, assets, equipment and resources. No previous Scouting experience is required as induction and training will be provided.

Visitor – SSAFA - The Armed Forces Charity SSAFA is a national charity helping and supporting those who serve in our Armed Forces, those who used to serve and the families of both. Visitors provide friendly support and a listening ear to eligible clients in either their own homes or care establishments. Visitors usually spend 1 hour a week (plus travel time) with a client on a day and time as agreed between themselves and their client. Some Visitors have the capacity to take on more than one client and that is at the choice of the Visitor. The role suits friendly and caring individuals who are willing to give 1 - 3 hours a week at a time to suit.

Fundraising and Marketing Volunteer – CancerWise CancerWise is a local drop-in Centre in Chichester which directly supports people who are affected by cancer and their families. Their holistic approach offers complementary therapies, counselling and support groups. They are experiencing a period of growth and looking for enthusiastic and reliable Fundraising and Marketing volunteers to help and support their staff and fundraising team. These are vitally important and rewarding roles which will help keep the centre open for the CancerWise family. They offer flexibility and are not necessarily a weekly commitment. Typical activities: Help organise fundraising events and attend on the day, Visit shops, restaurants and write letters asking for raffle prizes, Approach schools and companies to ask for support, Write thank you letters for donations and Keep publicity leaflets holders topped up.

Event Fundraisers and Box Collectors (Bognor Area) – RNLI The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea; they provide, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. They are looking for volunteers to help with events for fundraising. This is totally flexible and may be bucket collections, helping with fairs or RNLI box collections; perhaps involvement with events at the Lifeboat Station or Town parades and special events. Either occasional or regular commitment is totally acceptable. They are also looking for Box Collector Volunteers who will be responsible for 10 to 12 RNLI store boxes personally, regularly emptying the boxes when full of change and providing receipts to the box location owner/manager.

PostSport Chi start 2019 in pole position as DARTS: A record-breaking evening of darts saw the Friary Z trio of Dave Owens, Lee Franklin and Richard Ragless emerge as winners of the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League Divisional Trios competition at the Newtown Social Club.

A total of 35 teams took part, 11 teams more than last year, and three more than the previous record set seven years ago.

Division One saw 11 teams take part, with two of last year's champions going out in the first round.

The first semi-final saw Stuart Gray and Ian Kewin (Lamb Flamingo's) team up with Mark R Todd (BRSA Ravens) to beat Tony Phillips, Rick Cousins and Mark

Sheppard (Hunston Hares).

The second semi-final saw Dave Owens, Lee Franklin and Richard Ragless (Friary 'Z') take on Mark H Todd, Mary-Jane Todd and Ben Todd (BRSA Ravens). The Todd siblings couldn't take the spot in the final to go against their father as Friary won out.

The final saw Gray, Kewin and Todd try hard but the might of the top team of the league saw the Friary 'Z' trio take the match 2-0, giving Owens, Franklin and Ragless, pictured above, the Division One Trebles title.

Division Two also saw 12 teams take part and the only 180 of the night came from Larry Chant (Aldwick Legion).

But it didn't help his team mates, Simon McDougall and Lee Passey, get

Clack attack seals derby day win CHICHESTER CITY will want to start 2019 as they ended 2018 after heading into the new year in first place in the SCFL Premier.

Miles Rutherford's side have had a fine year, narrowly missing out on promotion last season as well as reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in the club's history.

Chi have continued that form into the new campaign and, at the half way mark, sit in pole position.

They do so after an excellent 2-1 away win at local rivals Pagham on Boxing Day. In what was a feisty encounter which saw Scott Murfin sent off and words exchanged online between fans and officials after the match, Josh Clack scored in each half to seal the win for Rutherford's side.

The win not only secures bragging rights for another year but also ensures Chi are a point ahead of Horsham YMCA going into the new year. Next for City is a home match against struggling Arundel tomorrow (3pm) at Oaklands Park.

Rutherford will want to see a repeat of the Boxing Day display rather than what was a poor showing at home to Hassocks a few days before.

After taking a 2-0 lead through Rob Hutchings and Gicu Iordache Chi let the Robins back into the match as the visitors drew level.

Connor Cody thought he had won the match for City in the second half only for Hassocks to net a late equaliser.

Pagham meanwhile will need be tasked with finding some of their early season form again if they are push on from their current position of sixth.

After starting the season with a 15 game unbeaten run in the league, three defeats in their last four have seen them lose touch with the leaders.

Next up for Pagham is a short trip to East Preston tomorrow (3pm).

Lions will want to show the form they displayed last weekend at Lancing when an excellent attacking display sealed a 4-0 win.

Howard Neighbour, Ryan Davidson, Scott Murfin and James Hubbard got the goals.

If there is a bright spot it is the return of Dan Simmonds to the side who bagged more than 40 goals in all competitions last season.

Pagham have also added Liam Hyde from Bostik South East side Horsham.

Robins keep on bob bob bobbing along

through their first match against Andy Cooper, Fred Hoare and Gary Gardiner (Claremont). This trio battled all the way to the final where they faced Adam Hall, Ben Lubbe and Alex Richardson (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

There Cooper, Hoare and Gardiner, pictured above, continued their good form, triumphing 2-0 to take the Division Two title.

Division Three saw 12 teams take part with Des Ling, Debbie Ling and Glo Greene (Railway Sleepers) playing Ashley Clements, Dave Coupland and Ian Dendy (Royal Oak) in the final.

The match began with tons from all three members of the Royal Oak team.

Debbie Ling managed to hit the double to take leg 2, but the other two legs were taken by Clements, Coupland and Dendy, pictured below, giving them the Division Three crown.

BOSHAM'S surge up the SCFL Division Two table continues after the Robins bagged their fourth win on the bounce.

A hat-trick from Jake Lafferty, along with second-half strikes from Alex Barnes and Ryan Coombes, sealed a 5-3 victory over Ferring in what was a thrilling encounter at Walton Lane.

The three points over the bottom side have lifted Bosham up to tenth in the 15-team division.

It has been a case of the Robins enjoying the wintry conditions as, after a poor start to the season, they have strung together a winning run which has seen them pick up with nearly two thirds of their points coming in the last four matches.

Danny Mullen's side will be looking to keep that going when they welcome Angmering Seniors to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

The visitors are new to the league but have impressed and are currently top after winning their last ten in all competitions.

During that time, they have netted49 times - an average of nearly five goals a game meaning the Bosham defence will need to be on their guard.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey and Sidlesham will head into 2019 looking at different ends of the table.

The local rivals clashed on Boxing Day with the Blues coming out 3-0 victors thanks to a brace from Ryan Morey and a Dan Bassil strike.

A bumper crowd of more than 250 certainly made it an entertaining match with eight yellow cards being handed out.

It was Blues' fourth win in five in the league and sees Daren Pearce's side head into 2019 in fifth spot, well placed to put pressure on the top four.

Selsey will look to keep that form going tomorrow when they head to third bottom Worthing United (3pm).

Sids, who are six points above the drop zone, will host mid-table Wick tomorrow (3pm).

ROCKS coach Robbie Blake believes Bognor will be a match for anyone after picking up four points from six against Sussex rivals over the festive period.

The Nyewood Lane side showed their true colours in the last week, beating promotionchasing Worthing 2-0 away before a 2-2 draw with second-place Lewes.

Those four points from local derbies lift Rocks to tenth ahead of a New Year's Day trip to Whitehawk on Tuesday (3pm).

Blake has now tasked the team to piece together a decent run to start 2019 with a push for promotion not beyond reach.

Speaking to Rocks Radio after the win at Worthing, Blake said: "Make no mistakes about it: whether they played good or bad they will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. We just hope we will be there.

"We have shown that we are a match for anyone in this league. Things have not been going for us but hopefully that will galvanise the dressing room. We're on the front foot and hopefully we can go on bit of a run now."

There was a party spirit at Woodside Road for the match against Worthing.

A healthy contingent of Rocks fans made the short trip east along the coast, helping boost the overall crowd.

Among the crowd of nearly 2,000 was Tommy Block, who had just completed his

move to Scottish Premier side Hibernian.

After a nervy first half, where Rocks had more possession but Worthing had the outstanding chance, Bognor got their just rewards in the 53rd minute when Dan Smith followed up a Brad Lethbridge shot to bundle the ball home.

The young on-loan Portsmouth striker celebrated in front of the travelling Rocks fans who fired streamers into the air.

Then, with time ticking down and Worthing chasing an equaliser, Mason Walsh came on and sealed the victory with a late goal.

One player who impressed was Theo Widdrington, who had signed on loan from Bristol Rovers just a few days before.

Blake said: "Considering he hasn't played any minutes with us or trained, Theo was outstanding and will only get better for us.

"Everyone defended really well but for Gaz [Charman] to play the way he did at 38 was a credit to himself. I have so much respect for the guy. He's given us extra steel and we have benefited from the experience."

Ahead of the trip to the Enclosed Ground there will be concerns over the defence again, with Charman being injured in the warmup before the Lewes match and Ed Sanders suspended after receiving two yellows in that draw. One player who is raring to go is left back Joe Tomlinson who scored two belting second half strikes to secure a point.

WHAT a Christmas surprise to beat Worthing in their own backyard!

With ex-Rocks Ollie Pearce, James Crane and Alex Parsons all playing for our rivals, it made the win even sweeter.

There was a terrific atmosphere as 1,853 witnessed the El-Classicoast match and it was great to be there.

Even after Dan Smith's goal early in the second half, I knew we were going to have to really perform to keep that lead and it was very nervy at times with the Mackerel Men going close on more than one occasion.

But a late change saw the impressive Mason Walsh come on and he immediately made a difference before scoring late in the game with a wonderful strike.

I couldn't quite believe it at the final whistle. Everyone was saying how Worthing were the favourites to win here.

But I felt with the way we defended as well as attacked, we fully deserved this.

The standout performance for me was the defensive play from Gary Charman and midfielder Theo Widdrington, on loan from Bristol Rovers, who were both immense throughout.

It will go down as one of the best team victories of the season and where better to do it than at Woodside Road?

Sussex is Green and White!

It was then on to Lewes at home on Boxing Day. We went behind early with a freak deflection by Theo off Dayshonne Golding's wayward effort.

But with the exploits of Joe Tomlinson, we came roaring back to 2-1 ahead after two superb strikes from the full back.

I thought we were cruising at this point but unfortunately an unmarked Kieron Pamment pounced to give Lewes a share of the points.

This was another exciting encounter with both teams giving it their all.

I was slightly disappointed following the final whistle as I felt we had done more than enough to win this game.

During the match we saw two sending offs with Golding given a straight red and Ed Sanders being sent to the dressing room after his second yellow.

Another dampener was Charman failing a late fitness test but I hope he will return for the Whitehawk fixture on New Year's Day! On aggregate over Lewes then, it ended 5-5 as we witnessed a 3-3 thriller earlier on in the season at the Dripping Pan. Many thanks to the Rooks for two great matches.

It will be interesting to see where they end up at the season's end.

I think we are still on course to be up higher in the league come the end of the season.

With the addition of Widdrington, we now have a bit more balance in midfield.

He's not afraid to win the ball back and set us back up on the attack and I felt he was the difference maker at Worthing.

Smith has also been bagging some goals recently at the Worthing and Kingstonian games and seems to be back on form.

We have one of the most feared front lines in the division but I feel it's all about how we get it to those players in decent positions for us to get the goals we need.

Whitehawk are always a challenge at the Enclosed Ground but have been struggling this year to get out of the bottom three.

Though they did beat Margate 3-1 away on December 22, so I feel it might be as tough as ever as they want to get out of that relegation zone.

But if we play like we did in 'Rebel Mackerel Country' then we won't have any problems.

Felt great didn't it?
