Town help to benefit others PIONEERING work in Bognor Regis will help benefit claimants around the country later this year. Arun and Chichester Citizen’s Advice was invited by the government’s Department for Work and Pensions to pilot a new national service for the troubled universal credit system. Luca Badioli, the Citizen’s Advice chief executive, said: “The DWP has now contracted Citizen’s Advice to deliver

universal support to help people making universal credit claims from April, 2019. “Arun and Chichester Citizen’s Advice have been chosen to pilot this new service and we have been delivering it since November 5 last year. “We have a good relationship with the local Jobcentreplus managers and the county partnership manager and we have been able to help clients by quickly communicating and addressing minor

issues.” Two concerns identified by Citizens Advice locally were the initial level of sanctions on claimants in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. “We reviewed the situation recently and we are happy to see that the universal sanctions levels are reducing. We continue to monitor these,” said Mr Badioli. The other concern centred around EU nationals experiencing delays by being

required to pass a habitual residence test to provide their entitlement. Many of Citizen’s Advice’s earlier concerns had been at least partly addressed by the government, he said. More than 500 Bognor Regis residents were claiming universal credit as the new year began. The number of claimants has soared from about 300 in its initial six months. See page five
