New plans for hotel revealed alterations, namely the Jack Rabbit Slims facade, alterations to the bay window at ground floor and enclosure to the lower ground level amenity areas will greatly enhance the building, especially when viewed from the promenade. "The proposed additions are sympathetic to the existing building, harmonising the former Jack Rabbit Slims to coalesce with the former Royal Hotel." The new restaurant is expected to have some 60 covers and 12-18 staff. The five-storey hotel, on The Esplanade, was built in 1888. It is in an historic area of Bognor Regis, The Steyne Conservation Area, but is not a listed building. Some of the building was converted into apartments several years ago alongside its continued use for visitors. But it closed in the past decade. Plans to change its use by adding a further ten flats were approved by Arun in 2015. This scheme failed to be developed. Another application for 18 flats was backed by councillors two years later. But work has again not taken place. Jenny Keith, Metamorph's planning agent, says in a statement to Arun: "Despite acceptance of the loss of the hotel use and the grant of permission for two different conversion schemes to flats, the hotel has remained vacant and not attracted any commercial interest. "The current applicant attributes this to the size of the flats making the scheme unviable in the local housing market."

Aldi plans for town submitted

NEW LIFE is set to be given to a neglected former hotel in Bognor Regis. Metamorph Management Ltd has submitted the latest plans to restore The Royal Hotel. The company wants Arun District Council to back its scheme for flats on the building's upper floors and a restaurant on two floors so diners can enjoy the sea views. Its application seeks to refurbish, externally alter, extend and reconfigure the previously permitted conversion to rebuild the restaurant and provide 27 flats. These will be split evenly between one and two-bed properties, with a three-bed flat on the third floor. This will entail adding two storeys to the western side of the building once occupied by Jack Rabbit Slims nightclub. A statement by Metamorph's architects, Randell Design Group, to the council says: "The existing property has been left to fall into disrepair and is in great need of extensive work to ensure its long-term future." The costly repairs which are needed include re-roofing, new and restored ironwork, new rendering, new uPVC windows, lower ground level waterproofing and rewiring. "The outcome of the proposal will result in the restoration of the iconic former Royal Hotel into high quality apartments and a destination restaurant," says the Randell Design Group. "The proposed removal of the 1970s
