INFORMATION boards for a £3m regeneration scheme in Bognor Regis will be installed in the next month.

THe arrival of the notices will be the first physical sign of the Pavilion Park which Arun District Council intends to create.

A council spokesman said: "It is anticipated that the information boards will be installed during February or early March.

THe park will be formed from the current Hothamton car park, off Queensway, and the adjoining children's play area and the Sunken Garden.

It has attracted criticism for replacing the garden amid claims the new green space will be smaller than the existing area when the car parking spaces and

other features are included. Arun also intends to market an area of the site for two blocks of flats.

One of the scheme's fiercest critics, Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said Arun's Conservative leaders had hidden away from discussing the park with residents.

"THey have now failed to attend four public meetings on the subject," he said.

"Rather than answer the community's questions and debate the issues

democratically, they have simply taken the decision to surround the Hothamton Sunken Garden with four information boards.

"Is this one board for each meeting they have missed?

Tree remembers friend of Bersted A LONG-LASTING memorial has been dedicated to a loyal member of Bersted Parish Council.

THe old English oak tree was planted in memory of John Potter, in recognition of his service to the area.

A brief service saw the 6ft-high tree and a plaque formally unveiled by the parish council’s chairman, Cllr Brian Knight, and the Rev Jo King, the vicar of nearby Holy Cross Church.

Mr Potter was a parish councillor for 26 years when he passed away two weeks before his 90th birthday in February, 2017.

Cllr Knight said he first met Mr Potter in the 1950s. He said: “THis is an old English tree for an old English gentleman.

“John was a perfect gentleman and a good businessman. He was honest and straight-talking. He did what he said he was going to do.

“He always acted in the full interests of Bersted and he would not stand any nonsense from anybody, including Arun District Council.

“John was a fount of local knowledge and, unfortunately, we still miss that local knowledge today. We thank you, John, for all you have done.”

Mrs King recited a prayer written for tree dedications and sprinkled the sapling with holy water. “We pray that it will grow strong,” she said.

THe tree has been planted on the boundary of the Jubilee Playing Fields next to Winston Crescent in North Bersted.

Among those who attended the ceremony last week were Mr Potter’s son, Ian Potter, and daughters, Lesley Simmons and Carol Bacon. Mr Potter also had seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs Simmons said the oak was a fitting tribute to her father. Mr Potter had worked in the timber industry in his early years.

“He knew everything about trees and was always commenting about them,” she said. “He would have loved having an oak as a tribute.

“My father was a very reliable, familyorientated man. He cared for us and was always there for us.

“He had lived in Bersted since he was six or seven, originally in Chichester Road and then in a bungalow which he built in Bucksham Avenue when he married.”

Mr Potter’s death was immediately marked by parish councillors with a minute’s silence at their following monthly council meeting.

He was a familiar figure at the occasions and had chaired its planning committee for many years.

He had served in the RAF and was a talented engineer. Parish council member David Lainchbury said his first meeting with Mr Potter in 2014 was soon followed by a mutual friendship based on their time in the RAF. “He had the rare talent of seeing the beauty in an ugly box of nuts and bolts and could turn them into something which worked,” he added.

Pupils set to benefit from allweather sporting equipment CHILDREN at a Bognor Regis school could soon be enjoying sports all year round.

South Bersted CoE Primary School has applied for planning permission to install a multi-use games area on part of its playing field.

A statement by its planning agents, Property Tectonics, says the new area would benefit the pupils by enabling them to play sport even when the ground was waterlogged.

"THe existing school field is currently used for a number of sports activities and the proposed development will not reduce or impact the existing field

use," Property Tectonic states.

"Instead, it will increase the number of activities as a games area pitch will be an all-weather activity surface."

THe area is planned to be built on the existing school field next to the Tarmac playground. THe site has been chosen to avoid affecting the school's activities and its neighbours.

It will mean a loss of 209sq m of the playing fields' current 7,271sq m but the new size would still be much greater than the government's rules for South Bersted's 210 pupils, the company adds. Arun District Council will decide the application in the coming months.

Harry wants to turn acting into action DRAMA student Harry Nash is following the footsteps of acting greats such as Sir Laurence Olivier and Dame Judi Dench.

Harry, who attends THe Regis School, has been awarded a place this autumn at one of the country's most highly rated drama schools.

He will study drama, applied theatre and education at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Harry, 18, said: "I feel privileged as it is such a quality and prestigious course.

"THe drama part is much as you might expect.

"THe applied theatre element involves two placements across the course, with an emphasis on either teaching drama education or community theatre, like prison drama, theatre in education, drama therapy or forum theatre."

Performing arts student Harry said he was especially looking forward to that aspect of the course.

"I like to be instrumental in creating theatre with a message which can make a difference in society," he said.

"It is good to entertain people but, for me personally, it is more about making theatre experiences which can instigate change."

Harry performed as a talent agent and celebrity in the Westloats Lane school's last summer show, the musical production of Popstars, the 90s musical.

THe Royal Central School of Speech and Drama is based in Swiss Cottage in North London and moved there after being founded in the Royal Albert Hall in 1906.

It forms part of the University of London and some of its other wellknown former students include Martin Freeman, Harold Pinter, Kit Harrington and Vanessa Redgrave.

Harry's achievement in being offered a place to study performing arts at higher education level later this year is being matched by other pupils at THe Regis School.

Two others are music students Jade Brighton and Emma Warburton.

A WORLD first is set to be included in the new Butlin's swimming pool in Bognor Regis.

THe helter-skelter water ride will be one of the main features of the ÂŁ40m attraction.

THe seaside-inspired pool is believed to be one of the UK's largest coastal investments this year and is due to open in April.

Butlin's says it is the first time a traditional seaside helter-skelter has been turned into a water slide in a swimming pool.

THe ride stands 7.4m tall, has 22 steps for guests to climb and has been created by innovative European manufacturer, Van Egdom.

Also being built in the pool are stickof-rock slides, rapids, a wave machine and areas dedicated purely to toddlers.

Resort director Jeremy Pardey said: "Guests repeatedly tell us that a brilliant swimming pool is one of their top three reasons for taking a break at Butlin's.

"When we decided to build a new one, we wanted to make sure it was innovative, fun, safe and secure, and provided facilities for changing, viewing and refreshments that ensured the whole family could enjoy as much quality time together as they wanted.

"We believe our new pool will,

and we believe it will be the best of its kind in the country, and quite possibly in Europe."

THe swimming pool means guests will be able to enjoy the full seaside experience at any time of the year without having to worry about the weather.

Butlin's has worked closely with Mumsnet, the well-known online parenting community, to ensure its new facilities suited families.

THe website's research has led to the pool's changing rooms have the latest design of underfloor heating and a range of bespoke changing rooms for smaller and larger families.

THis should lessen the problem of wet and cold flooring and cater for everyone's needs. In all, the changing area is more than 800sq m and boasts 700-plus lockers.

THe investment continues a tradition of innovation in the business, founded

by Sir Billy Butlin in 1936.

It was the first UK holiday resort to offer heated indoor swimming pools in the 1950s to the excitement of guests.

THe anticipation of the pool's opening is believed by the company to be behind a nine per cent year on year increase in bookings for Bognor Regis.

` Toilets action WORK is being carried out to ensure toilets are in place on Bognor Regis seafront this summer.

As reported, Arun District Council has alleged problems exist with the roof and cladding on the permanent loos installed on the promenade last summer.

It has told the manufacturer to take them away for repairs.

Council regeneration officer Caroline Gosford said: "Action is being taken to rectify that (the problems). We don't know what that will look like at the moment.

"If there is no provision by the summer, temporary toilets will be in place."

` Dog owner's joy DELIGHTED Paul Hammond has been reunited with his pet dog.

THe North Bersted man got together again with Trotsy for the first time in six weeks - thanks to the Bognor Regis Post.

Anonymous phone calls as a result of the paper's article about the disappearance of Trotsy after Mr Hammond left her outside Lidl in Shripney Road on December 13 altered him to her whereabouts.

He got back together with Trotsy, a black small miniature terrier, at his home nearby on Sunday.

Booze bid in town rejected TAKEAWAY owner Mehmet Karakus has been refused permission to sell alcohol at his Bognor Regis business.

Mr Karakus wanted to provide the drinks to customers of Best Kebab from 1pm to midnight every day.

But councillors rejected his bid because they feared selling the beer and wine would increase crime in the town centre.

Arun District Council licensing subcommittee chairman Cllr Alan Cooper said: “Unfortunately, the applicant failed to make any meaningful proposal as to how he would uphold the objectives (of the Licensing Act), in particular, those detailed by the responsible authorities relating to crime and disorder and public nuisance.”

Mr Karakus had failed to show how selling alcohol from his premises in Queensway would stop further crimes occurring in the area in the early hours, Cllr Cooper said.

THe decision last Friday came after Mr Karakus originally applied to Arun to sell alcohol from 1pm daily to 1am Mondays to Wednesdays, 1pm-3am THursdays, 1pm-4am Fridays and Saturdays and 1pm-1am on Sundays.

He also wanted to remove the need to pay for a security person to be on duty from 1.30am until closing time on his late nights.

He later limited the hours he wanted to supply alcohol to those he told the subcommittee and said he would keep the door staff on Saturdays.

“I just want to sell alcohol to my customers and with my delivery service,” he said. “If a person comes in drunk, I will not sell them alcohol. I don’t need door

staff on Friday because it is very quiet. Not many people come in my shop.”

But Sarah Meerten, Arun’s licensing manager, said an extra alcohol outlet in the town centre was likely to add to its violence and vandalism.

“THe addition of alcohol with the removal of door staff demonstrates that the applicant is not considering the local area. He is only considering the needs of their business.

"What we have heard today does not reassure me the applicant has demonstrated he is capable of selling alcohol without any impact on the local area," she said.

Arun’s senior regeneration officer, Caroline Gosford, said Queensway had benefited from more shops, flats and public area improvements in the past five years.

“We feel that all those improvements could be jeopardised by the anti-social behaviour happening now. We feel this application is not going to make it less and only make it worse," she said.

Barrister Peter Saville, for Sussex Police, said: “THe police do not feel the conditions offered by the applicant are any good.

"THey are, in the view of the police, cut and pasted from other applications. THey are not tailored conditions.

“Overall, probably a significant number of customers using these premises will already have taken some alcohol. THat brings with it the risk of conflict. Premises of this nature are particular sources of risk.”

Sussex Police also detailed four 999 calls around the premises since 2015 to justify their concerns.

A total of 21 letters of objection from residents to the boards was received by Arun.

On Monday, district councillors were told the Pavilion Park was likely to be opened in summer 2021.

Design consultants LUC said they would spend this spring and summer staging a series of workshops with local groups to gain their ideas about the final design.

Alex Massey, LUC's assistant landscape architect and project manager, said at the council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee: "We would like to hold workshops with as many people as possible. We like to engage with people and listen to them.

"We hope to go to planning this summer. All being well, we will get a decision this autumn and winter.

Hopefully, by the end of this year.

"It will take 12 months to create the park. We will start in the spring or summer of 2020 which will, hopefully,

see it completed in the summer of 2021.

"THat's our programme we are working towards at this moment in time."

He said he was confident Arun's goal of including a water feature, performance area, adult gym, cafes and public seating could all be included within the area.

Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W), the sub-committee's chairman, said: "I am impressed with what I have heard.

"Anyone who thinks we are going to get a field with a few trees in it is obviously mistaken. We we have shown is that there will be trees and amenities for Bognor Regis.

"We want to have a park that is for children and not for street drinkers and drug dealers like the Sunken Garden."

Cllr Trevor Bence (C, Aldwick E) said he was aware of LUC's work at THe Level in Brighton.

"THe impact THe Level has had on Brighton is astounding. It is a similar site to here," he said.

"It was dead and buried ten years ago.

It's now a different place altogether."

But Cllr Stanley said workshops did not equal public consultation.

"THere are a large number of people very concerned about the development of the garden, which is very different from a park. Public displays and meetings are essential."

Giles makes road move in Pagham HOUSING campaigner Giles Binyon has got on his bike to show what life is like on two wheels on Pagham's main road.

Giles used a helmet camera to turn his experience on Pagham Road into a near five-minute film on Youtube called Pagham Road Life Cycle.

His ride south past THe Royal Oak in Lagness at 8am on Tuesday was made to show highways officials the congestion on the road before some thousand new homes are built in the area.

Advice saves money HUNDREDS of pounds have been saved by residents on their energy bills thanks to sessions staged by Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice.

A total of 25 people attended the four events last week. Some left with sizeable savings to boost their bank balances.

THe greatest saving was just over £300 a year.

Another resident was given advice to cut £120 from their heating bills.

THe final event is taking place from 10am-2.30pm today at Bognor Regis Library in London Road.

Charlie Young, a team leader at Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "THere are many reasons why people may be paying too much for their energy.

"But last week has been a great chance for people to get a bit of extra advice and support on how they can save money on their bills.

"People came very prepared with their bills and we were able to help many people with energy-related issues.

"As well as talking about switching provider, we've

also encouraged people to check their bills to see if there is a cheaper tariff with their same provider.

"To those already on the best deal, we were able to advise about the priority services register and warm home discount as well as informing them of small changes around the house to improve energy efficiency."

THe sessions began during national big energy saving week. THe first one in Bognor Regis took place last Wednesday at Grandad's Front Room in London Road. Others have taken place around Chichester and Littlehampton.

It has shown that savings are still possible even with the introduction of a price cap on energy bills at the start of this year.

Staff and volunteers from Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice have also used the sessions to pass on information about the organisation's national independent price comparison site to enable households to check their bills and the customer service star rating, which ranks people's views of their firms' performance.

Going north past them is a constant string of traffic.

Giles hopes his ride will convince officers that conditions on Pagham Road are causing problems.

"It is only when this happens that we can begin to start to solve them," he added.

A better cycle link from Pagham to Chichester is planned as part of the housing schemes but this will involve a route to Sidlesham and then north.

` High St fund bid A SLICE of a £675m government fund to boost traditional shopping areas could be coming to Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council intends to apply to the Future High Street Fund for up £25m to help the retailing centre adapt to changing shopping habits.

Denise Vine, the council's group head of economy, said Bognor Regis would take precedence over Littlehampton for funding.

"We can only bid for one town and the reason for that is part of the criteria for the fund is that we have to demonstrate what challenges and deprivation there are. We have to have a broad vision in place. We have that vision for Bognor Regis and we know what we want to do there," she said at Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee on Monday.

Cllr Trevor Bence (C, Aldwick E) said any application should seek to emphasise how the funding would improve the level of deprivation around the town centre, which was some of the worst in the south-east.

Initial expressions of interest for backing from the fund will be sought by the government this spring.

THose accepted by civil servants will go forward to the detailed application stage in the summer.

THe Future High Streets Fund was announced by communities secretary of state James Brokenshire last autumn.

"We expect to ask local areas to provide proposals setting out the overall vision that they wish to achieve for their high street or city centre and specific improvements that would contribute to that overall vision," he said in a statement.

Arun District Council has bought the equipment after a spate of yobbish behaviour in the car park above the Morrisons’ store in Bedford Street.

THe cameras' arrival was confirmed at the council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee on Monday. THey will be maintained by Arun.

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said: "We have got to keep building out antisocial behaviour. THe more we can do that the better."

Calvin Baylis, the council’s customer and parking services manager, told councillors last week: “We are installing some more CCTV cameras in Fitzleet in the stairwells because of the anti-social behaviour that is taking place there.

“THe images we can get from those cameras are better than we have in the past. THe hope is that they will deter antisocial behaviour.”

Residents have complained on social media about some of the incidents which have taken place at the car park. THey have included at least one trolley being pushed off the top storey.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said at last week's meeting of Arun's environment and leisure working group more maintenance needed to be carried out at the car park. THe signage in particular needed to be improved.

“I am glad to see something happening

at Fitzleet. I feel it’s dangerous. THe arrows on the Tarmac are faded. You can’t see which way to go,” he said.

Cllr Hitchins said he had met with Paul Wells, chairman of the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District, at the car park the previous week to talk about putting in better signs.

“I have reported the outcome of that meeting to the council’s officers. We are going to be doing something with the signage, especially,” he said.

“We are looking at how we can change bits and pieces in Fitzleet and how we can get rid of the anti-social behaviour, especially that which is going on in the stairwells.”

Mr Baylis also told the working group the council’s 24 pay and display car parks produced £1,139,366 from charges in the year to the end of last March.

A further £56,400 came from the sale of annual and seasonal permits.

THe council hired eight parking enforcement officers. THey issued 7,359 penalty charge notices in the same period. Arun has to spend the surplus – currently £90,000 - generated from the income on car parks.

Of the planned schemes, £26,000 will go on resurfacing and £24,000 on planting and landscaping at various sites.

Mr Baylis stated Arun would make its pay by phone trial permanent because it had been a success. THe first 15 months had seen nearly 75,000 transactions made.

Contactless parking was also being considered for the seafront seasonal car park, like Gloucester Road and the Regis Centre in Bognor Regis.

Drugs campaign raises awareness SHOPPERS in Bognor Regis have been alerted to tell-tale signs of deal dealing in their neighbourhoods.

A Sussex Police information campaign about the illegal practice of cuckooing visited the town centre last week.

THe mobile unit and police officers were present in the London Road precinct last Wednesday morning.

Sergeant Danny West, of the town's police station, said: "We want to make people aware of the fact that drug dealing and cuckooing is taking place in towns like Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

"People are very concerned about what we have to say. THey have reacted very well. No-one wants drug dealers exploiting people in their area.

"Some people have been very aware of what cuckooing means and, for others, it's a new term.

"THis has been about re-inforcing the message and getting the term better known and making them

THe remaining two vacant premises of 16 in the landmark structure are waiting for completion of legal formalities before new businesses move in.

THe news was revealed by Arun District Council's regeneration officer, Caroline Gosford, to councillors on Monday.

THe decision has improved the fortunes of the covered shopping and eating area. Several new businesses have since moved in.

Last Christmas saw the first series of events held there.

Cllr Trevor Bence, a member of Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee, said: "In all my years of living and working in Bognor Regis, I have never known THe Arcade to be full.

"THe fact that it is helping the council as well is just amazing."

THey take over the address of a person to use as the base for their activities.

"THe person is usually vulnerable, either through using drugs or a mental health issue," said Sgt West.

"One of the most obvious signs for people to look out for is if they see a lot less of a person they usually see at an address or it could be they see a lot of unknown people at that address instead."

Separate figures from Arun District Council have shown the prevalence of cuckooing in the area. A current report to councillors states: "THere are currently over 70 known properties that have been cuckooed in the past year...

"Approximately 27 per cent of these are council housing properties in 2017/18."

` Blue plaques bid PROMINENT figures in the history of Bognor Regis are set to be celebrated around the town.

THe town council has applied for listed building consent to place two of the plaques on the balcony of the town hall.

THey will honour King George VI and Charles Voysey and will form part of a heritage trail being compiled by the Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership Board.

THe trail is set to comprise ten plaques to recall various people who have made a positive contribution to the town.

As reported, the King convalesced at Craigweil House in 1929 and granted the town the right to the 'Regis' suffix as a result.

Mr Voysey was the architect and designer of the town hall 90 years ago.

THe application has been made to Arun District Council, which owns the town hall, and also decides local planning proposals.

Residents urged to stand for election COMMUNITY champions are being sought for Bognor Regis.

THe town council has begun its information events ahead of elections for its members this May. Its officers have held two drop-in events in the London Road precinct to raise awareness of the need for new councillors.

An information and recruitment day will be held next Wednesday at the town hall in Clarence Road.

Sessions will take place from 10ammidday, 2pm-4pm and 5pm-7pm.

Sarah Norman, the council's deputy clerk, said the first event had generated some interest among passers-by.

"It's about getting the message across that councillors are champions of their communities," she said. "It's important they are the voice of local people.

"Councillors are the people on the ground. THey are the ones talking to the

residents in their wards and finding out what matters to them."

THe town council has 16 councillors.

THey will represent five wards after the polls on May 2 after two of the existing six wards are merged.

Mrs Norman said: "People have said they are interested but they don't want to get involved in the political side.

"But they can stand without being a member of a political party. THere is also an expectation of how often people will attend meetings. So, there is a time commitment required."

Elected councillors serve all the residents in their ward. But some sectors of the population still remain under-represented on local councils. THey include under-45s, women and people from black and ethnic minority communities.

THe town council's role includes events, environmental and community projects.

Lesson's tasty treat for chefs YOUNG cooks at Ormiston Six Villages Academy were inspired by a mouthwatering dish of crab and seasonal salad.

THe main course, completed by mustard dressing, was created during an inspirational morning at the Westergate school by professional chef Kristian Wright.

Kristian is the development chef at Nature's Way in Chichester. His workshop was aimed at enthusing students for the regional Create & Cook competition for 12-14 year-olds.

He said: "We have so many fantastic opportunities on our doorstep. I really wanted to spark the young cooks' creativity by cooking up a dish using

wonderful local Selsey crab."

Students are challenged to create a two-course menu with as many local and seasonal ingredients as possible.

THe aim is to celebrate regional food and learn about the seasons and sustainability.

Min Raisman, from fit2cook food education, which runs the competition, was at the academy with Kristian.

She said: "We really hope to have a school from around Chichester in our final this year as there are some great young cooks and keen teachers."

Pint-sized histories of town's pubs provides plenty of interest in book WRITING a history of the pubs around Bognor Regis was a labour of love for David Muggleton.

THe variety of the hostelries - from the oldest to the newest and those run by independent licensees to those which are part of national chains - ensures plenty of variety to whet the appetite of any beer lover or local historian.

David is a professional lecturer and writer with a particular interest in pub and brewery history.

THis has resulted in his book, Bognor Regis Pubs, from Amberley Publishing.

Bognor Regis resident David, 58, said: "I've written books about the history of pubs in Brighton and Chichester. When I finish a book, the publisher asks me to write another one.

"I thought that, because I live in Bognor Regis, it would be really interesting to write about the history of the pubs in the town.

"It's been absolutely fascinating. People think I go round to the pubs drinking pints in them. But I spend a lot of time in archives and libraries.

"I found out a lot of history about places which I didn't know in detail before. I certainly know a lot more about the town now than I did before I started the book."

David has included 64 pubs in his book on a walking tour from west to east. THe oldest still trading is the William Hardwicke, which has stood in the High Street since it opened as the New Inn in 1817.

David recounts the fact its current name dates from 1987 after the brewer who built the premises.

In contrast, the nearby Punch and Judy, which recalls the Tony Hancock film partly made in the town, has changed name five times in 17 years.

Further along the road, the brief history of the long gone Gordon Arms is covered, while the visit of comic Norman Wisdom to the Richmond Arms in London Road, subject of plans for new flats, is another story to merit inclusion.

A darts match involving famous player Jim Pike at the Crown Inn, in Manor Place, is another story at a former pub which David features.

In what were once the separate villages of Felpham, Bersted and Pagham, inns can date back to the 17th century.

THe Royal Oak, also known as the Pink Pub, in North Bersted, is one hostelry to boast such a heritage. Another is the Lion in Pagham.

His book also details the brewers who supplied the pubs and the landlords and landladies who ran them as fixtures in their surrounding communities.

One is Walter Bridger who, in December 1954, began the custom known as the Tree of Goodwill. He had been so delighted by the care and treatment his son had received during a hospital stay he put up a Christmas tree under which were placed presents to be donated to the children's wards of two Chichester hospitals.

Another two in the news for less savoury reasons were James Mills, the beerhouse keeper, of the Lennox Arms in West Street, and Frank Teale, of the nearby Wheatsheaf.

THey were bound over to keep the peace in

December, 1873, after they had threatened to murder each other.

Slightly further afield, and the transformation of the Rising Sun in Chichester Road, North Bersted, into a stamp collector's paradise in the 1880s is covered by David. He also recounts the short-lived Laburnum, in Laburnum Grove, which boasted a modern design but closed after 33 years.

Felpham's pubs get plenty of coverage, from poet William Blake's tangle with the law in September, 1800, at the Fox Inn, to the existence of snakeskins and a crocodile skull at the THatched House in Limmer Lane.

David says the continued presence of such historic pubs shows the Bognor Regis area has withstood the worst of the ravaging of the pub business caused by changing social trends.

"THere have been pubs which have closed but others - like THe Navigator and THe Old Barn - have opened in former guest houses and hotels," he said.

And, finally, David reveals the former pub featured in a book by the famous novelist HG Wells. THe Wheels of Chance was written

by Wells in 1896 and has a chase which ends in Bognor at the 'Vicuna Hotel' on the western end of the seafront.

THe real-life Victoria Road hotel, now Victory Court flats, was used by the Bognor Cycling Club to lend credence to its claim for fame.

` Homes withdrawn A PROPOSAL for four terraced houses next to a Bognor Regis hotel has been withdrawn.

Mr and Mrs D. Skinner have told Arun District Council they are no longer interested in pursuing their plans in the grounds of the Royal Norfolk Hotel's former tennis courts.

But their planning agent, Adrian Hoy, said they were committed to coming forward with another plan.

A total of 36 letters of objection to the proposal was received by Arun.

Traffic fears over Aldi store PROTESTS have greeted a major scheme in North Bersted with a new Aldi store.

Councillors fear traffic generated by the Saltbox development off Rowan Way would cause gridlock in the area.

Bersted Parish Council’s planning committee chairman, Cllr Gill Yeates, said: “Local residents are very upset and can’t see how the developers have come up with some of their traffic figures.

“I don’t know how they can say the old plans for a hotel and gym would generate the same amount of traffic as an Aldi.

"People visit a hotel for quite a time, while the Aldi will have X number of tills and whizz people through as fast as they can.

“THis particular scheme is not going to be good for anyone. We were told by the developers there would be 509 jobs when it was fully built out. It is a large piece of land for that.

“We were talking about 1,000 jobs there initially. So, that has been downgraded and not well-paid jobs as well.”

In its formal response, the parish council has told Arun District Council, which will decide the planning application by Landlink Estates, it objected to the scheme.

“THe application does not provide any mitigation measures to ease the traffic on the A259 Rowan Way and A29 Shripney Road.

“It does not appear to consider the cumulative effect of traffic on these roads from planning permission granted for Lidl on the Oldlands Farm site opposite.

“THe traffic survey is based on August, 2017, weekday figures obtained from West Sussex County Council," said the parish council.

Its planning and licensing committee members stated: “Although the town council support the growth and the development of the Salt Box Field, it is with reluctance the members object to this application on the grounds that the road plan has been ill thought out, with no mitigation measures to ease current or future congestion.

“At present, any disruption on the A259 in surrounding areas such as Chichester and Littlehampton, coming in to Bognor Regis, has a knock-on effect that this development would only exacerbate.

“Bognor Regis Town Council feels that the impact (of the development) will be so great that it warrants proper detailed scrutiny with a robust, objective and honest approach as to how it will affect residents and visitors to the town.

“Members would like to be confident that, in allowing further retail and employment, whilst being of benefit, does not create a gridlocked area on the northern route out of town, nor upon those entering Bognor Regis via the A29.”

As well as the Aldi store, the proposed scheme will comprise a distribution depot for Warburtons the bakers, a showroom for Richmond Motor Group, two drivethru units and two industrial units.

As reported, Landlink Estates hopes to receive planning permission for its 12-hectare scheme this spring to enable work to start in the summer.

THe first aspect of the business park to be built will be the depot for Warburtons.

Hair students learn style tips in masterclass

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HAIRDRESSING students at Chichester College enjoyed a special masterclass in styling by one of the best in the business.

Renowned stylist and head judge of TV’s Extreme Hair Wars, Martyn Holmes, showcased how to create a timeless ‘vintage tong’ style, giving students the knowledge they will need for achieving glamorous 1940s-style waves.

After watching Martyn’s demonstration – and peppering the stylist with questions about his background and life in the hair industry – the students then spent the afternoon working with him to recreate the look themselves.

First year apprentice Tayla Rigby was one of the students enjoying the opportunity, and she said it has inspired her to work harder to achieve her dreams.

She said: “It was really exciting. I really like Extreme Hair Wars and I’m a fan of his. It’s amazing to see someone like Martyn coming in to the college and giving us a chance to learn from him.

“It makes you more motivated, I think. Even though I’m just starting out, watching people like Martyn and Lee Stafford makes me want to do more and get involved in more shows.

“You can see from them that you can

do some really great things, and they were just like us.”

Alongside his television work and running his own salon, Martyn also works closely with Lee Stafford Education to deliver training to students at Lee Stafford’s 11 partner colleges around the country, which includes Chichester College.

Martyn said: “I’m passionate about this industry and when you get to a certain age – like I have – it’s about giving back and getting the next generation ready. It’s sharing knowledge, and that’s important.

“I get a lot of satisfaction out of working with young people and passing on my knowledge.

“THis is my first time in Chichester and it’s a beautiful college with some amazing facilities. It was lovely to be working with a full house of students, who have been wonderful.

“I can see that a lot of them are very enthusiastic and it’s good to see passion for their career growing.

“THere’s always going to be a need for stylists. It’s not one of those trades that can be done by a robot or a computer.

We’re very lucky that we will be doing what we love for as long as we want to across the world.

"We’re lucky.

It’s a great industry to work in.”

` Fire service funds

f Martyn Holmes teaches his tricks of the trade

WEST SUSSEX County Council cabinet members have agreed to continue to fund fire intervention and prevention services and business resilience services.

At a meeting on Tuesday, it was agreed to give more time to look for alternative funding and sponsorship options to deliver these services in the future.

It means proposed savings of £400,000 for fire prevention and £100,000 for business resilience services no longer form part of the budget decisions for 2019-2020.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “THis has always been a very difficult area for us to look at, especially as we see the value of these preventative projects.

"We have listened to feedback from the public and our select committee and I’m delighted we’ve been able to find funding to give more time to develop business and sponsorship opportunities so these services can continue after 2020.”

THe 2019-2020 revenue budget goes before the full council on February 15, for final approval.

Funding to support homeless charities HOMELESS charities will receive extra funding from the council.

West Sussex County Council cabinet members have allocated £750,000 in funding to support homeless charities in the county.

THe aim of the funds is to help organisations to make the transition to new arrangements following changes to housing related support funding that will come into effect later this year.

Homeless charities will be able to bid for funding to help with the transition to new models of working and partnerships.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “We are acutely aware that making the changes

required may be difficult for some organisations who help some of our most vulnerable residents.

“We have listened carefully to the feedback from the public, our partners and the select committee and have identified additional funds to help them during a potentially difficult transition.

“THis funding could be used to help create some alternative and creative solutions to some very difficult problems. At all times West Sussex County Council adults’ services and the cabinet member for adults and health, Amanda Jupp, will be there to help.”

THe revenue budget for 2019-2020 goes before the full council on February 15, for final approval.

Art gallery at uni for charity THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester is hosting an art exhibition at the Fine Art Space Gallery.

THe event promises to be a great celebration of art and music in aid of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust and is free and open to public from February 4-8, from 9.30am to 5pm. .

THe trust supports local children in the region who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening or terminal illness by providing paediatric nursing care at home.

Jazz and art combined evenings are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of that week from 7pm until 9pm.

THe head of jazz at Chichester University, Nick Reynolds said: "THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust is an incredible charity which the University of Chichester music department has been supporting through concerts and events over many years.

"THis event is to raise money for the trust as well as provide an exciting collaboration between the fine arts and the jazz department at the University of Chichester.

"Jazz has always strived to be a music of inclusivity, diversity, creativity and innovation and it still holds an important place as an evolving global artform.

Artist Fabrice Cure has produced a series of works that in his own words ‘celebrate the history of jazz through its performers; from its African and American roots to the present day as a form of vivid, multicultural expression.’

"THis is also a celebration of art in general and its importance to contemporary society and culture. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the university.”

Hospice launches a furniture appeal A SPECIAL appeal has been launched

by St Wilfrid’s Hospice to help buy specialist items for patients to use in the new hospice.

THe furniture includes state of the art Montcalm beds, hybrid Oska mattresses and recliner chairs, which will allow the new hospice in Bosham to open its doors to full effect.

While as much of the existing equipment as possible will be moved from the existing hospice, many other items are also required for both patients and visitors, such as chairs, tables and TVs, meaning that donations of all sizes will make a real and tangible difference.

Alison Moorey, chief executive, said: "We’ve now reached that last crucial stage with the remaining £900,000 is needed in a very short time to ensure

our new facility will be fully ready to welcome and care for patients.

"We’re asking anyone who supports the wonderful work of the hospice to give whatever they can to help keep the fundraising momentum going in the final weeks of our appeal."

St Wilfrid’s new purpose-built hospice in Bosham is due to open in late spring.

Since opening in 1987, St Wilfrid’s has cared for over 17,000 patients living with terminal illnesses as well as supporting their loved ones.

THe new hospice will enable St Wilfrid’s to further develop its specialist care and expand on the variety of support services it can offer the community.

CUTBACKS will see some bus routes around Chichester and Bognor Regis reduced.

West Sussex County Council is cutting its subsidy to bus operators by £300,000 to £2.27m in the coming year to help to make up for a decrease in its government funding.

THe result will see Saturday services on the Compass route 85/85A from Chichester to Arundel withdrawn because of low numbers.

Stagecoach routes 46/47 between Chichester's East Broyle and the city centre will have a reduced frequency as will the Stagecoach 50 route from the city centre to Summersdale.

Both will also see the link from West Street to the bus station axed.

Stagecoach's 54 route between Chichester and Petersfield will see its 7.34am and 5.50pm services withdrawn but a new 6am journey from Chichester Petersfield will start.

THe 56 route from Arundel Park in Chichester to Old Bosham will also see fewer buses.

Cllr Roger Elkins, the county council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said every effort had been made to limit the impact of the changes.

"Last year, our bus user survey received more than 4,300 responses and we have been using this to help understand which services were of greatest benefit to residents," he said.

He thanked bus operators and community groups for working with the council to limit the cutbacks.

He also pledged the council would see if residents without alternative transport could be helped. Most West Sussex bus services are unaffected because they are run commercially.

Park warnings over high CO2

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESEARCHERS from the Met Office have announced they expect to record one of the largest rises in atmospheric concentrations of CO2 this year.

Nick Heasman, pictured right, country and policy manager at the South Downs National Park Authority, and an expert in woodland management to control carbon dioxide levels, said the news was a big worry.

He said: “It’s concerning that 2019 is expected to record one of the biggest rises in CO2 and this is certainly a warning siren about the vital importance of protecting and enhancing Britain’s forests.

“THe South Downs is the most forested national park in England and Wales and, while only one woodland region of

many, it’s crucial that our green lungs are conserved to soak up the large amounts of CO2 cities and towns produce.

“One of the key measures moving forward to help reduce CO2 will be to lock up carbon not just in the trees but in the soil."

A recent global study concluded that 26 per cent of carbon was locked up in trees, but the rest is held beneath the trees, recycling hundreds of years of carbon production.

He added: "THis is why, on the 100th anniversary of the creation of THe Forestry Commission, we’re working really closely with woodland partners and farmers to not only protect and plant more trees, but to protect the soils.

“One of the main threats to controlling excessive CO2 in the atmosphere is the prevention and management of increasingly prevalent tree disease such as Ash Dieback Disease. THis will be

a continuing challenge for woodland partners in the years ahead.”

THe South Downs National Park has over 38,000 hectares of woodland which covers approximately a quarter of the landscape.

Met Office researchers expect to record one of the biggest rises in atmospheric concentrations of CO2 in 2019.

You have almost certainly developed presbyopia - the professional term for long-

sightedness, which is the opposite of myopia or short-sightedness.

THe condition is completely normal and natural in most cases because it is a result of ageing and that's why it is so common for middle-aged and older people to start to notice difficulties with reading and near vision tasks which used to seem easy.

THe condition was mentioned as early as the writings of Aristotle in the 4th century BC and glass lenses to ease the problem first came into use in the late 13th century.

Depending on the work you do and the range of activities you enjoy you may be more, or less, aware of the ageing process in your eyes.

Farmers, builders and other workers who spend a lot of time outdoors are usually some of the last groups of users who recognise their visual changes while computer-users, craftsmen and librarians may be seeking

solutions to their difficulties much sooner.

Bands are ready to turn back the clock f The buildings to be demolished

Unsafe buildings to be demolished CONSENT to demolish two landmark buildings in Bognor Regis has been issued by Arun District Council.

THe council has said the hazards at 2-4 Waterloo Square are so great a demolition order is the best way to overcome them.

THe order, signed by the council's empty homes officer Helen Stevens, comes into effect on February 12.

THe buildings have to be knocked down by March 26.

Developer B5 Ltd applied to Arun last July for permission to demolish the structures. THey are within THe Steyne Conservation Area.

THe two and three-storey buildings have a Dutch or Flemish gable facade and date back beyond 1903.

But the demolition order lists 39 deficiencies in them which justify their demolition.

THey include: "THe balcony is in poor disrepair and any persons using (it) are at significant risk of falling due to its lack of maintenance over the years.

"It is also reported that due to the buildings' condition a number of beams are not protected and it is highly likely that all steelwork within the building is suffering from corrosion resulting in the loss of structural integrity."

THe order states the deficiencies give rise to hazards such as falling between the levels, structural collapse and sections of the building falling off.

MUSICIANS are looking forward to rock again in Bognor Regis in the name of charity.

Members of bands who provided live entertainment in the sixties will be delighting fans of their tunes once more.

THe tenth anniversary staging of Back To THe 60s will take place at 7pm on February 16 at the Riverside Caravan Centre in Shripney Road.

Former Top of the Pops presenter Mike Read will be the special guest.

THe ex-Radio 1 DJ, who also presented the popular Saturday Superstore on

BBC1, worked at the former Shoreline Club in Bognor Regis in the sixties.

His first-hand knowledge led him to write a book about the then thriving music scene - and the organisers of Back to the 60s are delighted he will be able to join them.

Roy Haines said: "Mike has got a high profile in the entertainment industry and, hopefully, he can raise the profile of our event."

As well as helping to introduce the acts as compere, Mr Read is going to sing a Buddy Holly tribute with THe Fenmen."

THe event is on course for another sell-out of some 450 tickets. THis will mean a further sizeable sum raised for charity. THe Samaritans are this year's chosen good cause.

One of the musicians involved from the start, drummer Bernie Smith of THe Detours, said: "It's a fantastic night. THe atmosphere from the audience is the most important thing for us. Everybody loves it. We do it for the fun of it."

Other bands taking part include Johnny Devlin, THe Southbeats and THe Diamonds with Pete Manville.

THe five-piece band were nominated for best group in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017 and scooped folk band of the year and album of the year in the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2016.

WemsFest was started in 2011 to provide an annual multi-arts festival for the communities of

Westbourne and Emsworth.

It has since grown into a year-round voluntary arts organisation working as far afield as Compton and Worthing.

IN A BRITISH northern coastal town, three young men are coming home from war, their interwoven stories are the basis for a new play, THe Unreturning.

Set at different times over the last 100 years, this compelling play is by Anna Jordan who won the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in 2013 for Yen at the Royal Court THeatre.

Originally a Frantic Assembly and THeatre Royal, Plymouth, production, the drama's cast is Joe Layton (Frankie), Jared Garfield (George), Jonnie Riordan (Nat) and Kieton Saunders-Browne (Finn).

Directed by Neil Bettles, who is associate director of Frantic Assembly, and featuring Frantic's celebrated physicality, THe Unreturning explores the profound effect that war has on young lives, and asks - what does coming home really mean? What is home?

And when experience has shattered you into a million pieces, will home help to put you together again, or treat you as an ugly truth it does not want to confront?

"I felt really honoured. She has an incredible ear for music and composition."

Olivia has a flair for the unusual and a unique way of describing her emotions that is both refreshing and utterly her own which

is also well evidenced on the album.

She continues: "Lyrics are important to me, I have always loved poetry too, so words do excite me as much as a really memorable melody. I hope people will enjoy the story of Leave A Little Light On." THis year also sees her gearing up for some exciting live opportunities, not least of which is a slot performing at THe Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show this March at the Worthing Pier Southern Pavilion.

Art offers up the opinion to crowds Theatre Review 

By Kelly Wickham Art Until February 2 Chichester Festival Theatre, Oaklands Park, Chichester PO19 6AP www.cft.org.uk IT'S BEEN described as one of the most successful comedies ever staged and once you've seen it, you can see why it holds that accolade.

Having opened in 1996, it took both the West End and Broadway by storm, won the Olivier, Tony, Molière and every other major theatre award, and has been packing in audiences worldwide for more than 20 years.

Serge spends a huge amount of money on a modern painting, his best friends, Marc and Yvan are in two minds about it.

Marc instantly dismisses the painting as rubbish, but Yvan sees potential in the art, turning the whole play on its head and making the focal point on friendship rather than the art itself.

THe all-star cast features BAFTA-

nominated Nigel Havers as Serge, Olivier award-winning Denis Lawson as Marc and British comedy award-winning Stephen Tompkinson as Yvan.

THe quick witted remarks from all three cast members will leave you holding your sides for the pain of laughing, but the overall top prize has to go to Stephen Tompkinson for his amazing performance.

Not only did he play his part with utter brilliance, a master of timing and facial expressions without the need for words.

He also seemed to speak the words of frustration, everyone in the audience could relate to.

A story centred around a sole piece of artwork, which is effectively a blank canvas, stirs up hilarious remarks which are relatable and believable at every turn.

THe fascinating use of minimal props and scenes with the same table and three chairs, changing a simple piece of art so instantly the audience knows the place, is very clever too.

A top cast and a top play, one not to miss this winter season, hurry up and book your tickets as the last performance is tomorrow, Saturday.

AS PART of a 60-date tour, internationally-renowned guitarist Remi Harris will be performing at Chichester Jazz Club today (Friday).

Playing a variety of guitars and a ukulele, Remi will perform with a double bassist.

Hereford-born Remi (30) has performed at the BBC Proms, Buckingham Palace, Montreal Jazz Festival, on BBC 4 Television and live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.

He said: “I'm excited to be back on the road again. It’s great to be playing in our favourite venues and visiting new places, we’re so grateful for the audiences who come out and see us year on year."

Concert-goers will be treated to a spectacular night of virtuoso guitar playing - with influences from jazz, blues, rock’n'roll, funk and world music. Musically, the show is a reflection of Remi’s artistic influences -

In addition to repainting and cleaning the museum, a number of important aircraft and display changes have been made.

Visitors this half-term will see a major change to the location of aircraft, cockpits and simulators in the Merston aircraft hall. THe jet aircraft associated with the World Airspeed Record attempts (Meteor, Hunter and Swift) are now displayed, together and the full size Lysander replica, purchased by the museum last year, which has been moved to a corner of the hall to enable an additional exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the SOE’ to be curated by the curatorial team.

THis exhibition includes a film on the recruitment, training and operational activities of SOE agents (spies).

Additionally, displays from last year’s successful ‘Tangmere Aerodrome 100’ exhibition have now been moved into the museum to provide visitors with an insight on the formation and early years of RAF Tangmere.

For younger visitors, the museum has created ten family activities, including the ever popular ‘Tangmere Teddy Bear



Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is located in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum was born when a group of like-minded enthusiasts met to discuss ways of keeping the memory of RAF Tangmere alive.

Challenge’, which family members can pick up from the new ‘Family Activity Station’.

Adults can ‘fly’ the Lightning fast jet cockpit simulator for no additional charge to the admittance fee and in addition to other interactive simulators there are cockpits for both adults and children to enjoy. For refreshments, look no further than the NAAFI tea room.

A gateway to authentic and delicious Indian food We discovered what delights India Gate in Merston has to offer

by Daniel Field SITUATED along the busy A259 between Bognor Regis and Chichester, the India Gate restaurant at Merston is a welcoming sight for hungry and weary travellers alike.

Manager Michael Noor has run India Gate for eight years and has watched the business thrive as customers return again and again for their delicious food and excellent service.

My friend and I paid India Gate a visit to sample a variety of their dishes and we were cenrtainly not disappointed.

To begin, we opted for a selection of starters - the choice of food on offer at India Gate is exceptionally eclectic, and choosing what to have was the hardest part of all!

Starters average around £3.95 and include such diverse dishes as ostrich tikka, cooked in the tandoor, squid with lemon and tarragon, and a vegetarian option, dilalbo chop, a spicy potato cake, amongst the more familiar favourites. Main courses include a wide range of vegetarian, seafood, biryani and balti dishes.

We were first treated to an appetiser, beautifully charred tandoori king prawns in the shell, with a mild smoky spiciness to tease the palate, but not enough to overwhelm the delicate flavour of the pink prawns within.

Our next course arrived - a selection of starters, all of them equally delicious.

Most outstanding was the excellent crab maliabar, a homemade, deep fried patty of minced onion, potato and crab, with a crisp firm breaded outer coating, complemented by a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Along with the crab cake was a lamb samosa, a flaky Indian pastry, filled with pungent and spicy lamb, a sheek kebab, hot, meaty and aromatic, and possibly the best onion bhaji I have ever had, fresh fried juicy onion strips encased in a light crisp batter that melted in the mouth- with not a hint of grease.

To accompany our meal, we ordered a bottle of India Gate’s house wine. THe wine list is very comprehensive, with an international mix of familiar and less wellknown names, ranging in price from £27.00 to £79.00.

THe house wine is a more modest £14.50 a bottle and we plumped for the red. It was a highly drinkable soft, generous fruity wine with a delicious balanced structure and vanilla undertones, with India Gate’s own label adorning the bottle.

We were treated to a veritable feast as our next course arrived. THe next dish was the home made kathi kebab, a wrap made with soft Indian pastry encasing a tender lamb and herb filling with a mild spice and coriander flavour.

Also accompanying the curry dishes were sag sana gobi- a savoury vegetarian side dish comprising of whole nutty chick peas, spicy cauliflower and spinach, which had a pleasing palate-cleansing effect on the taste buds, and a sag rice to accompany this rich with spinach and a perfect companion to the rich and creamy curries.

And indeed, the stars of Indian Gate unsurprisingly were the curries themselves.

We chose to share the splendid lamb khalia, a stunning dish comprising succulent forkfuls of meaty, tender chunks of marinated lamb, highly spiced in an aromatic sauce with onion, ginger, pepper and garlic, with just enough heat to make the taste buds dance on the tongue.

We also opted for the equally superb, mouth-watering chicken lababdar. THis is a heavenly south Indian home style curry, resplendently sweet with the unique exotic flavour of coconut running through it. THese flavours were balanced out with piquant ginger and sweet chili, embellished with a smattering of almonds, to give this delectable traditional dish additional texture - a perfect marriage with the delicate morsels of chicken.

THe excellent cheese-stuffed paratha and scrumptiously puffy nan bread were just the thing to mop up the last drops of the curry sauces.

For dessert, we indulged in the house special blueberry classic, a refreshingly cold feast of whipped cream, flavoured with fruits and blueberry sauce, which

was a perfect conclusion to our wonderful gastronomic experience.

Michael Noor has certainly stretched the boundaries of Indian cuisine since coming to Chichester some ten years ago - his formula is highly successful- he now runs a chain of restaurants in the south east and has plans to expand further.

His sophisticated and unique menu, consisting as it does of the best of northern and southern India, Persian, Punjabi, and Bengali-influenced food, is pure pleasure, appealing to couples, and groups of friends alike.

With excellent food and service India Gate is a great choice for your Valentine's Day meal. Especially for February 14, the chefs have created a wonderful a la carte menu, and Michael is offering it at an exceptional price.

For a five-course meal including starters and desserts, as well as a glass of champagne, it is only £22.95.

Or for those who'd rather spend the evening together at home there is, of course, the option of a takeaway from India Gate that will surely take you away to the true tastes and spices of India!

In the bad old days, many young people were told to have all their teeth taken out as a dental treatment or precaution against the need for painful work later. Fortunately, dentists are much more enlightened now but part or full dentures are still needed to enable many people to eat normal textured food.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Tuesday, January 29 - It was officially stated at Buckingham Palace last night that the slow, steady progress at King had continued throughout the day.

THe situation was regarded as satisfactory at the Palace and, though no definite arrangements have yet been made for the removal of the King to Craigweil House, near Bognor, it was hoped soon to be able to make plans.

It is quite certain that the King will not be moved this week...

THe Queen will visit Craigweil House one day this week.

Friday, February 1 - THe Queen left London in the morning by road to visit Craigweil House, Aldwick, near Bognor, and this may be regarded as an indication that the time is near when the King can be removed to the South Coast.

It is probable that, if the weather is suitable, the King's journey will be made on THursday, February 7.

THe Medical Press this week is able to speak of steady improvement in the King's condition.

THe Queen received Craigweil House yesterday shortly before half-past 12, accompanied by Princess Mary, Viscountess Lascelles. Sir Derek Keppel, Master of the Household, who has been at the house for several days, met the Queen on her arrival.

People in Bognor were unaware of the visit, and there were only small groups gathered in the vicinity of Aldwick. THe Queen remained for more than three hours and during her stay inspected many of the rooms, particular attention being given to those at the front of the house.

She left to return to London about 3.40pm and as her car passed out of the grounds she acknowledged with a cheerful smile the greeting of a small crowd.

A FAMILY-RUN Bognor Regis business is calling for knitters to get busy to take on dementia. Pinks Vintage Ice Cream's has challenged crafters of all ages in the area to contribute knitted or crocheted bunting, chain links or rope.

THe aim is to create 805 metres of the material by joining the lengths together to form a half-mile chain displayed in an undisclosed location in Bognor Regis at the end of next month.

THis will raise awareness for the support Sage House, run by Dementia Support, offers people living with dementia and their families and carers.

Georgia Alston, Pinks Vintage's business development manager, said: "We're hugely excited to be partnering with Sage House to help raise awareness and get the whole community involved.

"Anybody who wants to get crafting can participate and there's no minimum or maximum length per person. Every little helps.

"We can't wait to reveal more about how we will be displaying the 'yarn bombing' but, for now, it's top secret."

Donated lengths can be in any colour and can be knitted or crocheted in chain link or bunting style so they can easily be joined together. THe total pledged a week ago was 200m to get the appeal off to a encouraging start.

Anyone who would like to take part can let the organisers know how much they will be creating by using the social media hashtag #SageHouseYarnChallenge or commenting on Pinks Vintage's Facebook page.

All completed lengths should be taken to Sage House, City Fields, Tangmere, PO20 2FP, before March.

Dementia Support's Nikki Clarke said action was needed to help the rising number of people in West Sussex with dementia.

AUTHORS around Bognor Regis are looking for other residents who are made of the 'write stuff'.

THe Bognor Regis Write Club is staging its first short story competition.

THe winner will receive £100, with £50 for the runnerup and a £25 third prize.

THe 20-25 shortlisted writers will have their work published in a book to be launched at the prize-giving ceremony this summer.

Family and friends will be invited to the event. THe chosen writers will receive a free copy of the book.

Guests can buy further copies at a discounted price.

Julia Macfarlane, who runs the club, said: "THis will be the third anthology the club has published.

"We have also produced the Chichester Ghost Tour, all of which events have sold well.

"It's our first attempt at a public competition, so be

TWO years of junior parkruns in Bognor Regis were celebrated on Sunday.

A total of 33 young runners, aged four to14, pictured above on the starting line, took part in the milestone event on a 2km course on the Arena Sports Centre's playing fields.

Music provided by Andrew Miles and Carl Bryant, party hats, badges and balloons worn by the runners and plenty of cake gave the event a party atmosphere.

One of the organisers, Martin Searle, said: "It was great to see a few new faces join in with the celebrations and running.

"It is commendable to see seven new personal bests which shows how our juniors are improving their running skills."

THe past two years have seen nearly 1,000 runners cover a total of 8,748km - a greater distance than the height of Mount Everest.

Sir I read with deep regret your report (January 18) on a petition against offering homes to a small number of Syrian refugees in Bognor Regis.

Compassion is indivisible. Setting the needs of one group of suffering fellow human beings against those of another is a tactic aimed at exploiting the least well-off in our community.

THe petition may have been inspired by the hurt experienced by those signing – hurt caused by neglect of the less well-off in our society.

One is either compassionate or not – supposed compassion for one group of our fellows is totally negated by disregard of the needs of others.

In my work with refugees I constantly rub shoulders with people of like mind who are helping the homeless. I have yet to meet someone who is actually taking action to help the homeless, who does not also care about helping refugees.

THe cry of petitioners in this case is often that “Charity begins at home!” And indeed it does, but what they often mean is that charity ends at home, or never got started anywhere in the first place.

We need to understand better how the resentment sparked by attempts to help other people is caused and how we must all work together to try to assuage it.

THe petition seeks to divide people from one another. THose who sign it are helping a world of walls and razor wire to become further divided.

We court division at our peril.

I was shocked, saddened and frankly embarrassed that we we live in an area where compassion isn’t shown to people who have suffered the worse kind of hell and are here to start a new safe life with their families.

I fully agree the homeless also need to be helped but fuelling hatred towards others is no way to bring good to any situation.

It is up to us and our two councils, now, to find all the pre-fabs we need and somewhere to put them for everyone in urgent need on our waiting list as well as the homeless.

We have been wrong not to see that or that councils should replace all the council homes as they were sold off to sitting tenants in the 1980s, and build more wherever it is necessary.

It should be a duty of all councils to make sure we have no homelessness.

DOCTORS at THe Croft surgery in Eastergate have revealed plans to create a fitness trail and sensory garden next to the premises.

THey also want to use an existing open space to form an open meadow to provide social prescribing to help those with dementia.

A cultivation space for healthy eating projects, such as a kitchen garden, would form part of the project as well.

THe GPs' planning agent, Jamie Hanna, says in a statement: "Social prescribing is a treatment that recognises that health is not just about detecting or treating diseases but about improving wellbeing through a more realistic approach."

Building is a survivor of town's own Ice Age Ice house kept ingredients chilled to create the perfect 18th century meals IN the Bognor Regis Post of October 17, 1959, the local historian of the time, Gerard Young, wrote: “For a town that has a world-wide reputation for the manufacture of refrigerators, it is singularly appropriate that Bognor Regis should possess an excellent example of one of the earliest types of ‘fridge’ - an 18th century ice house once in the grounds of Hotham Park House".

THerefore, this week, I thought we could take a look at the ‘ice business’ in Bognor.

THe ice house is situated just in front of the Edward Bryant School in London Road, quite near Bognor Regis Library, and is in a remarkable state of preservation and a tribute to the skill of the men who built it in 1792.

THe construction consists of a 28ft deep central area from the dome to the floor, which is below ground level, and the diameter of the chamber is about 12ft. THe circular exterior wall is of fine brickwork with the dome being cemented on the inside.

An extra skin of brick and flint thickened the exterior of the ice house and, for further insulation, a mound of earth was built around it and planted with the necessary trees to provide even more shade.

Originally, the construction would have been within the walls as part of the estate of Sir Richard Hotham. THe floors in many ice houses

tended to be made of pebbles to facilitate drainage. THese buildings were mainly used for the storage of ice, because if it is packed together in a large mass, within a small area, it proved to slow down the melting process. It would last even longer when protected within a construction hence the need for these ice houses around the countryside.

Many of the earliest ice houses were used to provide ice for preparing summer desserts and the cooling of wines when entertaining. As Sir Richard had planned to entertain royalty, the need to preserve and cool his refreshments was an important and essential matter.

It is thought the ice was cut during the winter from a stream near East Lake in London Road.

Once cut, the ice was laid out within the deep circular pit and layered between straw matting.

It would be hauled out by a pulley wheel.

THere was a report in 1793, which mentioned 'stalwart servants had heaved up the ice blocks and hurried them away on a cart across the woodlands of the estate to the waiting kitchen staff'.

THe building remained in use up to the First World War, after which it was only used as a cold storage area. In 1941, it was used for the storage of apples, in one instance for more than two years, such was the airtight nature of the construction. THe ice house is now beside the

main road and many people pass by without much interest. Many people have wondered what it looks like inside. During Bognor’s millennium celebrations, it was opened to the public for one day and 500 people turned up for the viewing.

Around 1929 large quantities of ice were again required in Bognor and this time by a fishmonger. His solution was somewhat similar to Sir Richard Hotham in that he decided to make a refrigerator and, by buying a compressor, he was able to achieve his aims. THese were the early beginnings of our other icemaker, Charles Purley, and Lec Refrigeration.

Charles Purley was born in Twickenham in 1910 and before the age of 14 had taken himself, his mother’s bike and pocket money to Brighton, where he bought fresh fish, which he sold in the streets, making a profit. By 1929, he had moved to Bognor, complete with a thriving fishmonger and he travelled to Billingsgate to purchase his fish.

However, he obviously required large quantities of ice and decided to make his own.

Following the closure of Craigweil House, Charles Purley was able to purchase a carbon dioxide compressor to make a refrigerator. A friend in Brighton saw it and asked Charles to make him one.

THis was the start of a new business in North Bersted within the Royal Parade, which was Charles Purley’s fish shop, and it became known as the North Bersted Engineering Company.

In 1939, Charles Purley was to close down his original business as a fishmonger and become a full time engineer. By 1942 ,his new business had expanded and became known as the Longford Engineering Company with premises

in Longford Road.

THe company moved again in 1946 to Shripney Road where he had a staff of 150 with a sales turnover of £8,000. It was not until 1954 that the company became known as Lec Refrigeration Co Ltd. At the beginning, it made 27 fridges a week and, by the late 1940s, Lec was turning out more than 2,000 refrigerators weekly, had 90 per cent of the British export market to Canada and was making inroads into America.

Around the late 1940s, Charley Purley decided a plane would be of use in the business and rented a portion of land from a local farmer. His first plane was a wooden framed Auster.

THis grass landing strip was operational for many years and in the 1980 was Tarmaced and had runway lights installed. Sadly, it was not used much after this and it is thought that the last plane used the airfield around 1992/3.

In the 1950s sales trips had been taken on board the Lec plane with chief pilot George Farley.

By 1989, the company could produce up to 3,000 fridges a day and employed nearly 1,900 people. THey were virtually self-sufficient, making their own castings, compressors, motors and plastic components.

THe company was bought in 1994 by the Malaysian-based company, Sime Darby.

It was sold again in March, 2005, to the Glen Dimplex Group.

Finally, we have Sainsbury’s on this site, the Charlie Purley pub, the old Lec Gates and a sign commemorating David Purley.

But nothing will diminish the memories of generations of Bognorians who worked for this international company.

Admin Assistant – Stonepillow

Stonepillow offers shelter, information and support to empower homeless and vulnerable individuals to make positive changes in their lives. They are a homeless charity for the Chichester and Arun Districts providing a recovery journey for clients which focuses on the key areas of health, housing and work. They are looking for a person who is interested in a basic administrative role; including archiving, managing data base, data input etc. The role would require some experience in using Microsoft Office software, Outlook and basic office equipment like scanner/printer etc.

Cathedral Door Keepers – Chichester Cathedral

Chichester Cathedral is a pace of worship but also a venue for liturgy and music and a significant visitor attraction. Door keepers are the first point of contact for those visiting the Cathedral and they make that all important first impression. They are seeking people with a welcoming manner and helpful attitude to join the team and help to make everyone’s visit to the Cathedral the best that it can be. You will need to: be mobile and able to stand for an hour or more; have a welcoming manner and helpful attitude; you might have an interest in the splendid building but it’s not essential as they do have experienced guides; they provide all volunteers with a tailored induction.

Marketing – Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group

Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group (MWHG) is a volunteer led charity dedicated to the preservation and restoration of habitats and heritage, and caring for the shared green spaces of the Manhood Peninsula. They require a creative individual to market the range of publications they produce, including posters and local walks leaflets.

This will be a great opportunity to pursue your own ideas and develop a whole range of sales/marketing skills. As a small charity, to create this funding stream would be a huge asset. Reaching a wider audience with publicity will also, more importantly help spread their conservation messages. You will work closely with members of the publications team.

Shop Assistant – Radio Respect CIC

Radio Respect CIC offers mental health support and information, and also offers the community as a whole the opportunity to promote their activities and fundraising events. They need volunteers to help in their shop selling vinyl records, tapes, speaker, players and other retro items.

Bognor RFC hunt four wins in a row PostSport after hitting Fordingbridge for six BOGNOR RFC all but sealed a top three finish in Hampshire Premier after dominating rivals Fordingbridge in front of a partisan crowd.

THe Purple and Greens started brightly against the visitors and never let up in securing a bonus point 39-13 victory.

THe five points puts an 11 point gap between Bognor in third and fourth-place Fordingbridge with just seven matches of the season remaining.

Next up for Billy Toone's side is a trip to midtable New Milton & District tomorrow where they will look to make it four wins in a row.

With a 12 point gap still separating Bognor from undefeated league leaders Basingstoke all focus will be on trying to chase down second-place Sandown & Shanklin, who are just a bonus point win ahead in the standings.

THe Purple and Greens will want to continue their tradition of fast starts, which they showed again against Fordingbridge at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

Fly-half Dave Sweeney zipped the ball out wide to his pace men Dan Robinson and Sam Newcombe, the outside centre dotting down within 30 seconds of the whistle blowing. 5-0.

Bridge notched a penalty shortly after but

skipper Josh Burgess added to Bognor's lead shortly after.

But the visitors did not give up and scored a converted try and penalty before the break to take a 10-13 lead.

Into the second period, Bognor started to take control and prop Chris Webb scrambled over to restore their lead.

Further tries from Newcombe and speedster Josh Burnett sealed the victory and bonus point for the Purple and Greens before full back Dan Robinson wrapped up the scoring.

--Budding teen rugby players wanting to take the step up into the men's game are invited to attend the Bognor RFC Colts Academy training day.

DARTS: THe Sandy Carter Memorial mixed pairs knockout proved to be a family affair as mother and son Rachel and Adam Hall combined to great effect to lift the title.

In what has become the official halfway mark of the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League, the competition saw 27 pairs take part at the Newtown Social Club.

Form in the tournament did previous winners no favours with 2015 winners Mazz Tupper and Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) losing in the first round despite a 180 from the lattr.

THe reigning summer league champions, Hayley Gatford & Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares) also came up short, losing in round two.

Instead, it was Jill Mitchell (Newtown Clubbers) & Jamie Middleton (Aldwick Legion) who made it through to the final to face off against the Halls (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

THe final saw the Middleton go first by winning the bullseye. He also hit a 140 on his second throw giving his team the lead.

Adam Hall finally hit a ton allowing them to catch up, but both sides missed multiple doubles. Eventually, Hall hit double one for the first leg.

THe second leg saw Hall hit a ton to start the leg, and finally hit another at the end of the leg.

Rachel Hall hit 64 to leave a finish that Adam took out in three darts for the second leg, while their opponents were on a finish.

Leg three saw Middleton hit a ton, but 115 from Rachel Hall left her son with a chance at a 170 finish.

Unfortunately, he could only hit 98.

But on his next throw he stepped up to the challenge and only needed two darts to end the leg and seal the match by a winning margin of 3-0.

Both were clearly delighted when presented with the title of the 'Sandy Carter Memorial' Mixed Pairs Champions 2018/19.

Five try Chi on high ahead of week off

CHICHESTER RFC head into a week off on a high after chalking up a five try win over fellow strugglers Dartfordians.

Blues were clinical from the off in north Kent and racked up five tries in the convincing 21-42 victory.

Chi made the most of the conditions in the first half to jump out to a 30-7 lead at the half.

THen their cause was helped in the second half as ill-discipline cost the hosts as the referee reduced them to 14 with ten minutes remaining.

THe bonus point victory means Scott Ashley's side head into a week off ranked tenth out of 14 in the London One South.

With the eagerly-anticipated visit from leaders Brighton coming next weekend (February 9) the message to the players will be to rest and relax ahead of what will be a tough test for the Blues on home turf.

Chi had the kicking of fly half Henry Anscombe to thank for helping them to the win over third-bottom Dartfordians.

An early penalty got Blues on the board within six minutes. And despite the hosts replying with a try, it was one way traffic after that point.

First the Kent side had a man sin-binned.

THen Harry Seaman dived over for a score after a scrum. 7-10.

Further infringements provided two more penalties for Anscombe to kick. 7-16 and 10 minutes left in the half.

From the restart, Dartfordians infringed, providing Tom Blewitt the chance to wrong foot the defence and touch down in the corner. Converted for 7-23.

As the clock ran down, Toby Golds intercepted on the right wing and ran in Blues' third try. 7-30 and half time.

THe hosts hit back, partly helped by two yellows to Chi players, and with 70 minutes on the clock the score was 21-30.

But a red card for Dartfordians allowed Blues to kill off any hopes of a comeback with Sam Drayson and Seaman adding late tries.

YOUTH RUGBY: Chichester under14s produced a stunning second half fight back to seal victory over a strong Bournemouth side.

It what was a real roller-coaster of a contest, the visitors from Dorset stormed into a 5-28 lead at the half time break.

But Chi rallied and managed not only to recover but also overturn the deficit to eventually win 40-33.

Tries from Tom Heaver (2), Finlay West, Roscoe Hill, Will Osborne and Alex Spencer, along with a handful of conversions by Oscar Haywood and Charlie Manger, sealed the victory.

Coach Andrew Richardson described it as a "scintillating second half display which provided the spectators with a real heart-stopper".

He added: "Bournemouth played some excellent rugby, and both sides must be really proud of themselves."

Bognor's youth teams had a successful weekend, with the under 14s winning at Cranleigh and US Portsmouth.

THe under 16s continued their good run of form by defeating Cranleigh while the girls rounded off an excellent weekend with victory at Horsham (under 13s) and Crawley (under 11s).

Five star display as Tone Zone quartet romp home in Romsey

Backing for Lions bosses PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea has given his full backing to joint managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen after a disappointing run of form put paid to the Lions' promotion hopes.

THe Nyetimber Lane side were well placed for an assault on the top two in the SCFL Premier after going undefeated for 16 matches.

But defeat to Eastbourne Town at the end of November triggered a run of just one win in 11 in all competitions, all but ending any hopes of promotion for the year.

With injuries and suspensions still hurting the Lions, Pagham have been forced to turn to youth.

And the starlets responded by smashing six past Loxwood last weekend with Harry Prisk (3), Liam Brady (2) and Howard Neighbour all scoring in the second half to seal a 6-0 home win over the Magpies.

THat will give everyone at the club renewed hope that they can push up the table form their current position of ninth.

Shea also believes the club can progress in the RUR Cup with AFC Uckfield and Peacehaven standing in the way of a place in the final.

And the chairman confirmed that Hellen and Simmonds will remain at the helm to rebuild for next season.

Shea said: "THey had a great year last year. Tom is a young manager and still learning but I have got 100 per cent belief in him. Richie is very experienced at this level and both work very well together.

"THat's not the chairman's dreaded vote of confidence.

"THere have been very fine margins this season with injuries and suspensions at key times which meant we went through a dreadful patch where we were struggling to raise a side at some points.

"THey have had it a lot harder this year and believe they will come it through."

Next up for the Lions is a trip to nearby Arundel tomorrow (3pm) THen on Tuesday it's the home RUR Cup quarter final against Uckfield (7.30pm) Shea said: "Arundel is always a tough place to go and they treat it like a derby game "To be fair, we owe them one as they came over to us earlier this season and we drew after doing everything but score. We should have battered them really."

With more and more people of all abilities joining the cohort, members keep on chalking up good times at competitions in all corners of the globe.

Last weekend five Tone Zoners took on the off-road muddy five mile course in Romsey.

First home for the club was Gary Smith, in a speedy time of 41 minutes.

Just over a year after joining the club, Lisa Broad finished in her fastest time of 48 minutes. Rebecca Holden finished spot on the 50 minute mark, closely followed by Juliette Garrett and Jo Yorke.

Elsewhere, Grace Natoli, Derek Natoli, Lesley Ward and Sarah Spurr all jetted off to Gran Canaria, swapping freezing temperatures for some winter sun.

In the marathon, Grace ran a fine race to finish in 4 hours 52 minutes.

In the Half Marathon, Derek, Lesley and Sarah all finished under the 2.20 mark.

Derek was first to finish of the trio, in a time of 2.09. Lesley and Sarah came in at 2.16 and 2.18 respectively.

Chi remain top after late strike CHICHESTER City's hold on top spot remains slippery despite the wet weather preserving their place for another week.

Miles Rutherford's side left it late last weekend, with Josh Clack striking in injury time to seal a 2-1 away win against Broadbridge Heath.

THe close range bullet header sparked wild celebrations from the Chi contingent who knew how important the come-from-behind win could be at the end of the year.

THose smiles got even broader when they emerged from a mass bundle after news

filtered through that second-place Newhaven drew at Little Common.

THat gave Chi a two point lead at the top of SCFL Premier - something that remains after Newhaven's game in hand against AFC Uckfield was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

City will seek to extend the lead tomorrow when they welcome East Preston to Oaklands Park (3pm).

Rutherford's side head into the match full of confidence after a strong performance against a tough Bears side.

Even with the return of leading scorer Scott Jones and winger Gicu Iordache from suspension, along with a debut for Ryan Young in goal, it was the home side who took the lead.

Chi took until after the break to respond with Jones getting on the scoresheet with 20 minutes to go.

A draw looked certain until Clack popped up to seal the win and top spot for another week.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's charge on the top four continues after Blues made it a magnificent seven games unbeaten with a 2-0 win at Seaford last weekend.

Joe Bennett and Callum Dowdell struck in the second half to seal the win which puts Daren Pearce's side just one point behind AFC Varndeanians in fourth.

Next up is a trip to sixth-place Hailsham Town tomorrow (3pm). Selsey could also have a rearranged Division One cup match against Wick after the clash on Tuesday was abandoned at half time due to the weather.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham are up to ninth after a 1-0 win at Southwick last weekend with Jon Fryatt scoring.

AFC Varndeanians will be the visitors to the Rec Ground tomorrow (3pm).

In SCFL Division Two Bosham will be looking to bounce back at home to Jarvis Brook tomorrow (2pm) after suffering a 2-1 reverse against Rottingdean Village last weekend.

Title challengers are next for City Ladies CHICHESTER City Ladies assistant manager Lee Hurrell is urging his side to "spoil the party" as his table-topping team head to promotion rivals Coventry United.

THe Green and White Army make the long trip to the Midlands with a five point lead over Cov at the top of the FA Women’s National League South, albeit having played three games more.

With the season starting to draw to a close, Chi know that three points at their closest rivals could set them up for a title winning season.

But first Chi must end a hoodoo against their Midlands rivals and end their undefeated run in the league.

Despite the match being brought forward

a fortnight by the league, the assistant boss believes his side go into the game full of confidence after defeating MK Dons 5-2 last weekend.

Hurrell said: "We need to take them [games] one week a time. We know what to expect from Cov as we have played them twice already, both times down here where they have beaten us.

"It will be good to spoil the party just like they have done it to us twice already."

After falling behind to a debatable penalty, goals from Molly Clark, Lauren Cheshire, Rebecca Barron and a brace from Sara Tubby sealed the win against the Dons.

Hurrell said: "THe desire to get the result was there from the start to the end."

Blake: We should fear no one when we're on the front foot Next Game

TONBRIDGE (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

ROCKS assistant Robbie Blake insists there's no other dressing room he'd rather be in when Bognor hit their stride.

THe former Portsmouth coach was speaking ahead of an important week for the Nyewood Lane side which sees the injury-hit side play two games in five days.

First is the visit of Tonbridge Angels, who defeated second-place Haringey at home last time out.

THen it's a midweek trip to fourth-place Merstham on Wednesday (7.45pm) as the fifth-placed Rocks looks to keep in playoff contention.

Despite having more than six first team players unavailable for a range of reasons, they head into the week full of confidence after an excellent second half performance sealed a 3-1 win at Corinthian Casuals last weekend.

And, speaking after that win to Rocks Radio, Blake said that the team have nothing to fear from the remaining three months of the campaign.

He said: "We have to be on the front foot and once we do that and play our football, we fear no one when we're on it.

"If we have the right attitude I wouldn't want to be in any other dressing room than ours."

It was very much a game of two halves at the Casuals' historic King George's Field.

A poor first 45 minutes saw Rocks go in at the break one down after an uncharacteristic error

from keeper Dan Lincoln allowed a long range effort from Hamilton Antonio into the net.

With manager Jack Pearce missing the match due to illness it was up to Blake to deliver the half time talk.

His words certainly had an impact with second half sub Tommy Scutt scoring with a tame header before Jimmy Muitt bagged a double to wrap up the win and take his personal tally to 27 goals for the season.

Blake said: "Apart from the horrible goal that we conceded, other than that I thought we ended the first half stronger. We regrouped and made a change and in the second half I think we were good value for the win."

Victory keeps Rocks fifth in the Bostik Premier just two points behind Lewes in third.

THings are tight, though, with a further two points separating Bognor from Worthing in tenth.

But Blake believes the positive attitude within the squad will stand Rocks in good stead as they move towards the business end of the season.

He said: "We have not got a bad lad, we have got people pulling in the right direction.

"Sometimes they will make mistakes but we are a really good team full of quality.

"When we are one nil down here which is a difficult place, for us to come back I must give credit to the lads. It shows a willingness to do well."

Three at the back here to stay?

IT'S a formation that was forced onto the Rocks rather than one adopted through choice.

But, after sealing a 3-1 away win at a combative Corinthian Casuals side, three at the back could be here to stay for the Nyewood Lane side.

With a number of players missing, assistant coach Robbie Blake opted to play Ed Sanders, Harvey Reed and Chad Field at the heart of the defence.

With Frenchman Richard Gilot playing a screening role that freed up the full backs to get forward and support Jimmy Wild and Jimmy Muitt who played up top.

Blake admitted that the formation only started to take shape in the second half with the switch of skipper Harvey Whyte to full back and introduction of Tommy Scutt for Josh McCormack, meaning Rocks started to get on the front foot.

Blake said: "As a coach or manager you may see decisions and have to make them with conviction.

"I thought at half time I had to make that switch by bringing Tommy on and pushing Harvey out wide and getting forward from there. THere's probably no one better than him coming from deep."

I'M writing this after an excellent away win at Corinthian Casuals.

THere's no hiding, it was a good result and a bit better than some of our trips away this season.

It's just nice to get back three points, especially given the squad that we had available to us. Despite those issues we still came away with the result.

With Mason injured and the Pompey boys not there, we had to think about how we would play and that meant a reshuffle with the formation.

Rather than going through Jimmy or Mason out on the flanks we had to flood the midfield and then get the full backs forward to give us the width.

Credit to Blakey for getting us to focus on that as it was not something we had worked on in training.

Some of you may be surprised by that but we all understand how Blakey wants to play and understand the principles that we need to get the ball wide whichever way we can, whether that's through wingers or full backs.

THe key is that once we have done that you still need to make runs to create space for other people.

It's about getting people into good positions. Due to personnel and people we had available, the full backs was the better option.

Macca (Josh McCormack) was one of those players but he came off at the break as he was shattered.

He had a couple of games in midweek so I think they started to catch up with him.

He's still young and perhaps needs to manage his workload a bit, but he has done well whenever he has played so he should be back tomorrow.

Another player who is settling in is Richard [Gilot] who's done well to be fair to him. He likes to get stuck in and is a good lad so it's good to have him back.

THat all helped get the win, which at 3-1 was probably a bit flattering.

To be fair, the first half was a weird one and if we had gone in drawing that would have been fair.

As many good saves Dan Lincoln has made his season (he made three worldies in the last week and a bit) even he will admit he had to save the first one.

But then in the second half we stepped it up a bit, we moved the ball a bit better and started to get Doug and me on the ball a bit higher and wider.

It helped, too, that the two Jimmys started doing well linking up and gaining possession when we played it up to them.

It may seem like a small thing but when the ball stays up there that does help as now the ball is not coming back so fast.

After that win we are now all looking forward to the next game at Tonbridge We did them over at the start of the season so they will be looking to get their own back.

THen we have a Wednesday trip to Merstham which will be tough as there are a few of us who could do with a rest.

It is what it is. Playing on a Wednesday is not something we do a lot but at least it gives us a break from training on Tuesday and THursday.

All we can do is keep on picking up points.

We would have been in a lot better position if we had tucked away Potters Bar. But if we keep going as best we can with a few wins and draws then we will be there or thereabouts.

No one is starting to break away at the top and Haringey and Dorking are not that far ahead so with a good string of results anyone can make a run at it.

It's no good thinking about games in advance as we have to deal with the next one, otherwise that's when you start slipping up.
