BUTLIN’S is committed to Bognor Regis until at least 2050, its resort director in the town has said.

Jeremy Pardey said the imminent opening of the £40m swimming complex on the holiday company’s resort showed it was looking to its future.

“This is all about getting the best longterm strategy for the next 30 years here.

We are bringing the site into the 21st century,” he said.

Sited on the eastern side of the resort, it will replace the existing pool on the seafront at the opposite end of the site.

This still remains in use but Mr Pardey said excitement about the modern pool was building among visitors as the countdown to its opening entered

its final weeks.

“There are 48,000 tiles in the fountain area alone and that’s about a tenth of the overall size and the large slide is 12m high and 600m long. There’s also a lido, a wave pool and a helter-skelter.

“It’s designed to be in keeping with the British seaside but to bring it indoors,” he said.

Contraband still a problem in prison DRUGS and mobile phones continue to reach inmates in Ford Prison.

A new report reveals efforts to stop the influx of banned items at the open prison have been only partly successful.

The prison's Independent Monitoring Board of volunteer visitors has recently published its review of the prison up to the end of last October.

It states: "The infiltration of contraband (most notably drugs, mobile phones and SIM cards) continues to be a major challenge for the prison management.

"The long-awaited installation of additional CCTV and other security measures covering the eastern (residential) side of the establishment has greatly reduced the volume of contraband thrown over the perimeter fence.

"However, there has been an increase in contraband found on the western side.

"The prison conducts mandatory drugs tests on prisoners. During the reporting year, the failure rate has fallen by seven per cent to 3.7 per cent. All prisoners are tested on arrival and one month later."

Ford is a category D prison with an emphasis on resettlement. It was converted in 1960 from a former Fleet Air Arm station.

It has 546 male prisoners. Nearly half of them are lifers, indeterminate sentence prisoners or multi-agency public protection arrangement cases. None is serving sentences for sex offences.

A total of 199 were returned to closed conditions during the year under review for breaking prison rules.

An improvement welcomed by the board

was the introduction of batons for night staff on patrol as well as the body worn cameras used by 95 per cent of staff.

"The use of body worn cameras has had a positive impact in violence reduction by defusing confrontations which might otherwise have escalated, and in recording evidence of misdemeanours," the board states.

Much of the prison's accommodation - a mix of a brick-built block with 274 single rooms and several smaller billets, with two prisoners to a room - dates from the military use. The board was concerned by the condition of the facilities.

Its report says: "There is a lack of funds for infrastructure improvement.

When any money becomes available, the implementation process is tortuous, resulting in severe delays. Preventative planned maintenance is totally lacking."

Much work has been carried out by the prison's staff and prisoners but the performance of the nationallyappointed contractor was a real concern, the report says.

Equipment in the main kitchen breaks down frequently as well as the machines in the launderette used by prisoners.

But the prison's education and training work was commended by the board.

On-site vocational courses are available along with distance learning. More than 60 prisoners were also attending college.

The library at the prison was another success. At least 1,500 visits are made a month and it was in the top ten of the Bookseller's library of the year 2018 awards.

National housing organisation wants updates from council MONTHLY updates have been insisted upon by a housing regulator to ensure council homes around Bognor Regis comply with the law.

The Regulator for Social Housing has told Arun District Council it wants the regular progress reports about the work being carried out to answer its criticisms.

Last August, the regulator determined the council has breached its home standard for failing to meet legal health and safety standards for fire and water hygiene.

A meeting in November saw the regulator tell Arun urgent action was

needed to tackle the problems.

As well as the updates for the next year, the regulator also wants to know Arun's other health and safety work on its 3,400 properties in the district.

Council group head of residential services Satnam Kaur told councillors last week: "We are working at pace to continue to be compliant."

She outlined the progress which had been made on contracts, risk ratings and new training.

Cllr Richard Hughes, chairman of Arun's housing and customer services working group, said: "You are on target and that is good."

Aldwick helpers gain award for hard work

f The selfless helpers with their award FOUR Aldwick residents who help an annual event run smoothly have received an award.

Anne Bass, Christine Girdlestone, Christine Mitchell and Perrie Sims were presented with the Aldwick Parish Community Award for their unsung work.

The award was begun by Aldwick parish councillors several years ago to recognise individuals who put an extra effort into providing a service to residents.

Cllr Lilian Richardson, the parish council's chairman, presented the award at its recent reception.

It was a complete surprise to helpers to make the occasion even more special.

She told the guests: "These ladies consistently, quietly and without any prompting, give their support, time and skills to supporting the Remembrance Day commemorations."

This occasion has been an important part of the parish year each November for much of this century.

It is always well attended in the Millennium Gardens and is followed by tea, coffee and home-made cakes in the adjacent community centre.

"The event is hosted by the parish council but is provided and organised by the four ladies. When the event is finished, the ladies quietly withdraw only to re-appear again the following year to repeat their efforts," said Cllr Mrs Richardson.

Mrs Bass said: "It was a genuine surprise for us to win the award but to think that everyone in Aldwick thought we deserved it is a lovely feeling. It is nice to be appreciated.

"We help out because we belong to our residents' association and we are part of the community."

Mrs Bass has been helping at the service since it was started by the parish council ten years ago.

Christine Mitchell and Perrie Sims then joined her soon afterwards, with Christine Girdlestone completing the team four years ago.

They spend two-and-a-half hours in the centre before and after the service.

They put out their cakes and biscuits and get the water brewed for the tea and coffee and the soft drinks poured. They follow this by tiding up the premises.

"It can be very hectic for about an hour," said Mrs Bass, "but we are a well-organised machine and everything works well." *The reception also included the presentation of 17 grants from the parish council which totalled more than ÂŁ6,000 to local groups which benefit the people of Aldwick.

Swimming Lessons

A FIRST fight night was a success in Bognor Regis.

The town's initial boxing tournament held by Ockley Amateur Boxing Club at the Jeneses Arts Centre attracted dozens of fighters and a packed audience.

They were treated to 19 bouts for a full four-hour programme of sporting talent from clubs in Southampton, Portsmouth and South London among others.

Faz Chitima, Ockley ABC's founder, said: "It went really well. I was happy with the night.

"All the bouts held out, apart from one. You usually lose 5-10 because the boxers or their coaches pull out.

"It was the first boxing tournament we have held. We have had to visit other clubs in the past.

"I am hoping to stage another one next month. England Boxing gave us the licence to hold this one and sent their officials to it.

"I'm waiting to hear from them before we can go ahead. But it is likely to be at the end of March or early April.

"It is the first time our boys had fought at home. Some boxers only want to fight away because there is less pressure. But they have to learn to do both."

The event last Saturday consisted of a mix of junior bouts of three 90-second rounds and intermediate clashes of two two-minute rounds. The categories refer to the experience of the boxers.

They were all aged upwards of 16.

Josh Edwards won on a unanimous points decision against Gaspar's Lewis Abirrcken.

The last of the club's boxers to fight, Percival Tussamha, gained a first round victory when he broke the nose of his opponent, Dan Quorrington, from Litchfield.

Barry Jones, who co-owns Jeneses with his wife, Jenny, said: "The event was a great success. We had 88 seats in the main hall and they were soon full and other people stood around watching.

"We also had another 50 people watching the fights on TV in the room next door. We did make mistakes, though, and there are things we will definitely do differently next time."

` Child unit plans FOUNDATIONS for Families wants to open a child and family assessment unit in Bognor Regis.

The business wants to use a house in Longford Road to assess parents whose children are considered by courts and councils to be at risk of harm through parental behaviour and/or lifestyle.

Families will spend 6-12 weeks in the home with their children.

The property will be staffed around the clock by social workers and family workers to look at the parents' capacity to care for their children. Arun District Council will consider the planning application.

Talks to solve £4m fund cut HOUSING boss Trevor Bence has said he is worried about ensuring rough sleepers around Bognor Regis are unaffected by spending cutbacks.

Cllr Bence is cabinet member for residential services at Arun District Council. He is involved in talks to try to overcome the loss of £4m from the county council towards housing provision in West Sussex in 2020.

He said: “At the moment, we have no answers to this short notice that the county council are withdrawing funding and it’s worrying. We are in an ongoing dialogue about how that service will be funded moving forward.”

The current service is provided by charities such as Stonepillow and Bognor Housing Trust in Bognor Regis and Turning Tides in Littlehampton.

“We currently have no facilities to support that work and no expertise to support that. I really recognise that we need Stonepillow, the trust and Turning Tides and we have an ongoing dialogue which will get us there.

“We have a breathing space and I have certain ideas and, if I survive past the May elections, I would like to see how these groups could raise funds outside the county council’s support,” said Cllr Bence (C, Aldwick E).

His comments at Arun’s housing and customer services working group last week were prompted by a question from Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard).

He said: “The reality is that the county council is withdrawing a significant

amount of funding. They have made clear that they think it is the responsibility of all the district and borough councils to continue the funding. What budget allocation is being put in place for this?

We know it is going to happen.”

Satnam Kaur, Arun’s group head of residential services, said: “We are working closely with the county council to assess the impact and work on possibilities to preserve the current funding in terms of provision in our area through Stonepillow and Turning Tides.”

The county council would provide £700,000 interim funding for 2019/20 while work continued ahead of the total removal of the funding the following year, she said.

Arun’s community manager, Georgina Bouette, told the working group an official count of rough sleepers had shown 18 individuals in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton earlier in the winter.

Separate figures from a group which comprises Arun and other partners to discuss individuals in street communities showed 31 rough sleepers from April to September last year.

This compared to 34 for all the previous year and 16 in 2016/17.

She said: “Noticeable trends are emerging from the data, including the increase of rough sleepers in Arun and, critically, the expotential increase of individuals using class A drugs.

“Within this data set, all rough sleepers regularly use class A substances, typically heroin and crack cocaine.”

Footpath in Aldwick is among first to benefit from extra money PEDESTRIANS in Aldwick are among the first in the county to benefit from a £6m grant.

West Sussex County Council's contractor has improved the pavement in Aldwick Road as a result of the money from the government.

The funding was announced last year to carry out a series of works. These included surface treatments to improve roads and footways, improvements to highways bridges, vehicle safety barrier upgrades and some drainage works.

Cllr Roger Elkins, the council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said its highways officers have applied their knowledge and expertise to devise a programme of works to make the best

use of the funding.

"It is important to realise that this is not the same as the pothole action fund and is to be used for a range of local highway maintenance," he said.

"Some of the money will be used to treat and repair surfaces to tackle and prevent potholes.

"Spending the grant before the end of the financial year presents challenges, particularly if there are extended periods of severe weather, but we have plans in place to make best use of that allocation."

Other works around Bognor Regis will include road resurfacing in Pagham Road, Pagham, and structural road repairs in Bedford Street, Victoria Drive and Richmond Avenue West.

Roads officer says no to more talks A HIGHWAYS officer has declined to further discuss cycling on Pagham's roads with a campaigner.

Tim Townsend said he believed he had done enough to consider the points raised by Giles Binyon.

As reported, Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement committee member Mr Binyon filmed conditions in Pagham Road when he cycled along it one morning last month.

He said roads and the volume of traffic were always among the most common complaints raised by residents during the group's events.

But Mr Townsend, West Sussex County Council's principal planner highways in its planning services department, has told him: "My remit has always been to consider and reply to highways matters associated with planning proposals and I am of the view that I have now responded as fully as I can in that regard.

As such, I cannot assist you any further."

He stated the developers of the some 1,000 homes set to be built in Pagham were providing works or funding towards part of Pagham Road and other roads between the sites and the A27 to mitigate the transport impacts of those schemes.

"Specifically with regard to cycling in this locality, this too is an area where works and/or contributions have been secured from the Pagham sites," said Mr Townsend.

"As you will recall from reading the county council cycling strategy that I sent you previously, Pagham Road does

not feature in this document because it was not suggested by skateholders.

"Instead, the Summer Lane to North Mundham route was chosen as a preferred option for a section of the national cycle network route 2.

"Officers followed this advice when securing cycling infrastructure as part of the Pagham developments and that will be the area of focus for the time being.

"Of course, a choice of routes is available to prospective residents of the new developments and, indeed, existing residents.

"Some might use Pagham Road whereas others may choose other roads and routes."

Mr Binyon said he regretted being unable to pass on residents' concerns to Mr Townsend in future.

He told Mr Townsend: "You are right, however, in that perhaps an impasse has been reached - your insistence about the numerous choices of suitable routes for cyclists and my insistence that there exists no such choice, only the roads, which are highly dangerous and too busy to put bikes and vehicles together."

Mr Binyon said he believed Mr Townsend was wrong to believe the campaign to improve road conditions was unfounded.

"Although sad, I consider myself lucky in that I do not have to use these roads during peak times, unlike the majority of people who contact us because, of course, they are working people who have to pay many bills, including taxes," he added.

Police seek tool suspects AN APPEAL for help in identifying two suspected thieves in Elmer has been made by police.

Sussex Police wants to speak to the individuals pictured above in connection to the theft of expensive tools.

Volunteers recognised MORE than six decades of loyal service to Sea Cadets around Bognor Regis have been recognised.

The unsung contribution by six volunteers to Bognor Regis and District Sea Cadets was honoured at a ceremony at its base at TS Sir Alec Rose.

The individuals who received their awards from Lt (Sea Cadet Corps) Barry-John Silver RNR as the deputy district officer on behalf of Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, president of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, were: Lt (SCC) Gary Edgington, Chris Blows, Deborah Blows, Ray Rowe (30 years' service gold award), Sue Priday and Sue Wightwick-Hotston.

Many cadets also received qualification awards in marine engineering, communications and information systems, and first aid during the evening in front of an audience of parents, guardians and supporters of the unit.

The commanding officer, Lt Edgington, said: "The Sea Cadets are a charity that promotes personal development and self-confidence for many local young people by learning new skills and working in teams and is based on the ethos and tradition of

the Royal Navy.

"TS Sir Alec Rose SCC offers an environment where young people find new confidence, inspiration and respect and can access training and skills in a variety of different subjects from engineering, communications, first aid, sailing, powerboating, shooting and adventurous training.

"Currently, we have 30 cadets, between the ages of 10 and 18, enrolled at the unit."

He praised the recipients of the awards as being fully committed to the unit and providing essential support as part of its management team.

This allowed the instructional staff to deliver the best possible Sea Cadet experience to its cadets.

This was shown by the number of qualifications and promotions which were awarded during the evening.

The unit was presented with two donations - one from Bognor Regis Lions Club and the other from Westergate House Care Home.

They will be used to buy foul weather jackets to protect the cadets when they support community events.

Mr Pardey said Bourne Leisure decided to invest so heavily in the pool after surveys of its customers showed the top reason they visited Bognor Regis was for its location as a seaside resort on the south coast of England followed by the need for a good quality swimming pool.

This meant a lot of emphasis had gone on implementing a high level of customer care in the pool. This would see an extra 20 lifeguards being employed to take the number om duty at any time to 36.

“The new pool building looks beautiful but it is what is inside that matters – and that is good customer service,” Mr Pardey said.

That emphasis has seen the number of employees at the site rise to 1,320.

Half of them are permanent members of staff to begin to replace the previous emphasis on seasonal workers.

Having more employees made it easier to achieve higher standards of customer care.

The pool is among the reasons why business is booming at the Bognor Regis site. More and more holidaymakers are heading to the resort.

Bookings are up 10 per cent year on year to some 260,000 staying guests this year. That number is expected to rise to 300,000 in 2020.

“What is good for Butlin’s is good for Bognor Regis,” he added.

The current pool will be knocked down after the new one opens.

Discussions are underway about the plans for the redevelopment of its site close to the Gloucester Road car parks.

HERITAGE experts are seeking legal advice in a last-minute bid to stop two historic buildings in Bognor Regis being demolished.

Save Britain's Heritage is consulting the solicitors to see if it is realistic to serve any injunction to save the structures at 2-4 Waterloo Square.

Thomas Bender, its conservation officer, visited the site on Wednesday afternoon to see the buildings' condition.

Preliminary work has started to take down the buildings on the eastern side of the square, which is a conservation area.

Mr Bender said: "We are still exploring all the avenues we have got to keep the buildings.

"We are considering an injunction which would stop Arun District Council from doing what they are about to do.

"We would like to send in our structural engineer to re-assess the buildings in terms of their vulnerability. But time is running out."

Any injunction contained the risk of being costly if it failed and Save Britain's Heritage was told to pay the expenses of the council, he said.

As reported, Arun has served a demolition notice for the buildings.

This stated 39 hazards made it unsafe for them to remain standing. They included the balcony in poor disrepair, the likelihood of corroded internal steelwork and structural collapse.

The council owns the site but has said the duty to maintain the buildings rested with the range of owners in recent years.

A council spokesman said: "Arun District Council believes that the

order has been served correctly and is currently being actioned by the persons it was served on."

The threat to the buildings began last July when developer B5 Ltd applied to demolish them. That planning application has yet to be decided by Arun.

Mr Bender said he believed the buildings dated from the late Victorian era.

"They are more beautiful than I thought they would be and they fit beautifully into the surroundings of the pier.

"The pier is a Grade II-listed building and they form part of its setting and they are an important part of the town's heritage.

"They are the only buildings here that frame the pier. Taking them away will harm it," he said.

"They form a connection to the rest of the town from the promenade. If you look from the promenade, there are is hardly anything else which is left.

"They also fit in very well with seaside architectural heritage."

First sleep out in Bognor Regis will support homeless people A FIRST Big Sleep Out is being held in Bognor Regis to help homeless people.

The Stonepillow charity is asking its supporters to swap their beds on May 11 for a cardboard shelter and get sponsored for sleeping under the stars.

A Stonepillow spokesman said: "Every penny that is raised will enable us to provide essential support to local homeless people within our community.

"We encourage participants to set themselves a target of £250 per person.

"The event does not aim to replicate homelessness but it does give those taking part a small insight into the

The cabinet members agreed to put forward a 2.96 per cent increase in its share of council tax to £181.62 for a band D property.This will be debated by all councillors next Wednesday.

Cllr Mrs Brown said: "The council is charging £3.50 a week in band D. That is incredible value. Everybody in this council has worked very hard."

A £1MILLION cut in promoting recycling may hit council taxpayers around Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council is faced with losing £981,000 in the next two years after the county council axed an agreement to pay recycling credits to promote the activity.

Alan Peach, Arun's group head of corporate support, warned councillors on Monday the cutback would damage their budget and could put up council tax bills.

"The budget for recycling credits has been reduced by £131,000 (to £857,000) following the termination of the current memorandum of understanding by West Sussex County Council," he said.

"This will result in a reduced payment for 2019/20 and the memorandum will not continue after 2019/20, placing a further £850,000 of income at considerable risk from 2020/21, which will place further significant strain on the council's budget."

She will be performing the celebration of love letters between George Bernard Shaw, the author of classics like Pygmalion, and leading actress Dame Ellen Terry with Paddy O'Keeffe.

They will be taking to the stage at 3pm and 8pm on February 23 at the Cellar Arts Club in Worthing. The production has earned positive reviews.

Jean said: "I saw Paddy doing his one-man show on Shaw in Brighton a few years ago and was impressed with how his portrait showed Shaw's amazing genius with words and his clever wit.

"I had long admired many of Shaw's plays.

"I knew Shaw had been a prolific letter writer too and I suggested to Paddy that there might be an interesting stage show about his correspondence with the renowned Shakespearian actress Dame Ellen Terry from the Victorian era.

"As I began to read around 300 letters written over 30 years and delve into Ellen's life, my research uncovered an extraordinarily enchanting, mischievous

spirit who was mourned as publicly and lovingly when she died as Princess Diana."

The extensive correspondence was condensed into an 80-minute compilation to provide a glimpse into the special relationship between the two.

Jean wrote dialogue around the letters to create the work for the stage.

Retro games event begins GAMERS will have the chance to step back in time at a new Bognor Regis event.

Pixels At The Waverley will boast at least 13 computer stations with an array of games from the 1980s into the early years of this century.

Mario Kart, PAC man and Sonic the Hedgehog will come to life again to delight those who want to test their skills against the iconic characters.

The hardware will include Sinclair systems, Nintendo 64s and XBoxes.

The sky is not the limit as visitors go out of this world for sky festival

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE across Chichester and Bognor Regis are reaching for the stars with the return of the South Downs Dark Skies Festival.

The 50th anniversary of the first moon landings will be celebrated as the festival returns with two weeks of cosmic fun for all the family.

With 2019 marking half a century since the Apollo 11 landing, this year’s actionpacked festival will have a lunar theme, with moongazing sessions, indoor planetarium shows, an incredible VR experience exploring the Milky Way and the ever-popular star parties.

The festival, now in its third year, celebrates the National Park’s International Dark Sky Reserve status, which was awarded in 2016 and recognises it as one of the best places in the world to view the moon and stars.

The festival runs from Friday, February 15, to Sunday, March 3, with events across the length and breadth of the national park. The festival’s free flagship event, Stargazing South Downs, will return to Midhurst on February 16 and, for first time, also go to Petersfield on

February 18 during the school half-term.

Activities will include a giant ‘dark night skies’ colouring wall, the chance to dress up as an astronaut against the backdrop of the moon, talks on nocturnal wildlife and interactive science demonstrations.

Dan Oakley, “Dark Skies” lead ranger at the national park, said: “With the full moon falling during the festival, we’re looking forward to telling the story of our nearest neighbour and the influence it has on plants, animals and us.

“The star-studded skies above our heads are as valuable as our beautiful rolling landscapes and we can’t wait to share them with even more people. The immense view of the starry sky over the national park really is a spectacular sight and it’s amazing when people see it in all its glory for the first time.

“We’re hoping to capture some aweinspiring views of the moon and its cratered surface.”

People will be invited to share their images of the stars and moon using the hashtags #EmbraceTheDarkness and #SouthDowns over the two weeks.

Some focus on what can be seen in the winter night sky while other topics include a tour of the planets and one titled 'Distant Worlds - Alien Life'.

Each involves the chance to experience the awesome cosmos in comfort, with live expert commentary by a professional astronomer. The full dome shows feature stunning immersive video and breathtaking images.

The Planetarium is a large room with a domed ceiling, accommodating 96 people at a time. A special star projector projects images on the dome and shows the stars and other objects in the night sky.

The night sky can be shown both forwards and backwards in time and questions are welcome after the 70-minute shows.

"The festival also ties in nicely with the half-term holidays so it’s a great opportunity for young people to learn more about astronomy. No matter what the weather is outside, you can still come and learn about the amazing dark skies in our national park."

` Grants criticism STRONG criticisms have been made about a funding scheme which helps Bognor Regis good causes.

The county council’s community initiative fund sees the organisations pitch their ideas for up to £5,000 on a crowdfunding website.

County councillors for each area decide on how much to award each applicant but the grant is only given if the full amount is raised.

Members of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee said the scheme, started in the past year, was biased in favour of larger organisations.

Arun district councillor Norman Dingemans (C, Walberton) said: “Crowfunding is too difficult a prospect for small villages. If you only have 90 residents, you are not going to get any grants because they are not going to raise enough money."

Cllr Lilian Richardson, Aldwick Parish Council’s chairman, said: “We have not had enough information and it is not been timely.

“We need to have more detailed information in order to make some kind of rational decision.

“This is public money and we are giving it away wherever. We had have minimal information and we are making off the cuff decisions.”

But Jack Caines, of the county council’s county local committee development team, said the scheme was being refined from April.

“A microfund is being set up for grants of up to £1,500 instead of groups having to go through crowdfunding.

We hope this will increase the level of applications from smaller groups.

Any underspending from the fund will go to the fire and rescue service,” he added.

Project to get bikes moving RECYCLED bikes are set to be put back on the road thanks to a new Bognor Regis project.

Bognor Bike Recycling community interest company has been backed by county councillors with up to £3,763 from their community initiative fund.

The scheme still had £700 to raise this week of its £6,829 target on February 28 before the donation is triggered.

One of its founders, Adam Bell, said he was confident the goal would be reached.

"This project aims to be a low cost source of sustainable transport, by recycling donated or unused bikes which might otherwise end up going to landfill.

"In addition, we'll act as a hub for people to either act as a volunteer to help work on the bikes or simply learn valuable skills to help them maintain their own bikes.

"The money raised will be used to buy the most commonly needed bike parts such as brake and gear cables, brake pads, inner tubes and tyres, as well as additional tools," he said.

In the first year, the aim was to buy extra tools and equipment to start the project, recycle 150 bikes and ensure at least 50 people have learnt simple bike maintenance skills.

County council members of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee said the project was worth backing.

Cllr Lilian Richardson, Aldwick Parish Council's chairman, said she feared it might be too ambitious.

"I wonder if it will be able to achieve what it wants to do," she said.

But Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C), the county councillor for Middleton, said:"I am all for aspiration and sometimes you have to take risks to get the quality you need

to go forward."

Mr Bell is one of four founders of Bognor Bike Recycling. The others are his wife, Rebecca Olds, green energy project director Dave Barton and Danny Dawes, from Grandad's Front Room.

The initial base is in premises in Dickinson Place provided by Grandad's Front Room. But Mr Bell said it was hoped to move out into separate premises when the project become more popular.

"We want to provide low cost transport to those in need, provide the local community with a vibrant hub offering low cost workshops, protect the environment by saving items from landfill, improve mental and physical health by getting more people cycling and teach valuable mechanical skills," said Mr Bell.

About a third of households in Bognor Regis lack cars compared with a national average of one in four. Yet some twothirds of adults were overweight. Many did no exercise.

Those without a car could also struggle to take up a job with public transport often unable to fill the gap. Enabling them to own a bike would bring more work into reach and benefit their health, he added.

Two other projects were also backed by funding by the meeting last Wednesday if they meet their targets.

4Sight Vision Support will receive up to £2,213 towards a community area for people with sight loss to be able to attend sports groups, meetings and talks.

Eastergate Village Hall will receive a potential £4,468 to help to create better kitchen.This is needed to better cope with the influx of residents who have been attracted to a range of community activities.

South coast gets a boost with arrival of city uni students

As many as 200 undergraduates met with leading businesses at a careers fair to talk about graduate job openings once they finish their degrees later this year.

More than 100 employment opportunities were posted by businesses from across the south of England, which is one of the top locations for graduate

work in the UK according to careers advice service Prospects.

Final-year student Onwa Wonci, studying accounting and finance at Chichester, will start a job at the West Sussex branch of Enterprise Rent-ACar in the summer.

She was offered a full-time position after completing a year-long placement, arranged at the university’s careers fair last year.

Onwa said: "It’s been a simple transition from university to the workplace, thanks partly to the skillset I learned on my degree.

` Health and wellbeing MAKING health and wellbeing everybody’s business was the vision shared by West Sussex County Council during a special audience with the chief executive of Public Health England, Duncan Selbie, last month.

Mr Selbie was welcomed to County Hall, Chichester, by West Sussex director of public health, Anna Raleigh, to learn about the strong health and wellbeing partnerships being forged across the county with the NHS, district and borough councils and others.

This highlighted the work taking place to promote a healthy lifestyle, improve air quality and support people to look after their mental wellbeing as well as the help being given to residents so they can retain their independence and remain healthy and well for longer.

Mr Selbie also heard about the success of the county-wide West Sussex Wellbeing Programme, which is delivered in partnership with local district and borough councils, and the new programme of work being carried out in the county this year that is aimed at reducing the number of falls among elderly residents.

Figures from 2016/17 show there were 4,495 emergency hospital admissions for fall-related injuries in West Sussex.

Mr Selbie said: “I was delighted to visit the county council and to speak with officers about some of the challenges facing the authority, as well as learn about the work they are already carrying out to help improve the health and wellbeing of residents in the county."

Volunteers are celebrated at Sage House

On Monday, volunteers at Sage House dementia hub enjoyed a special lunch and a thank-you from Caroline Nicholls.

During her year as High Sheriff, Mrs Nicholls has been keen to champion those who support and encourage young people in the county to combat disadvantage and fulfil their potential — and to raise awareness of all those who work to protect the county’s communities and keep them safe.

During the lunch, Mrs Nicholls, spoke to Chloe Davies and Nafisa Dewan, on a work placement at Sage House for ten weeks as part of their degree. She

then gave a speech in which she said: "I am absolutely delighted to be here. I think my first visit to here was probably about two years ago and I came to an empty shell. Now, you actually can see everything and it's so bright and warm and welcoming.

"I was delighted to come back in May, when the Duchess of Wessex came to open the centre, which was really exciting as it was my first royal visit as the High Sheriff.

"This place does hold special thoughts because about three years ago my step mother and my father both suffered from dementia-related illnesses. Sadly, they have now both gone.

"But I just do so wish there had been somewhere like Sage House where I could have brought them early on and my sister could have come along and got advice

"From a vision which began around five years ago to this today is absolutely superb. The work which you are all doing as volunteers is very, very special and I know that. Without people like you giving hours of your time, all the things we take for granted, just wouldn't happen. You should be very proud."

Dementia Support is a local charity working in partnership with voluntary and charitable organisations, the NHS, West Sussex County Council and other

statutory organisations, to create a unique community hub for dementia.

The hub is designed to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for local people living with dementia, their family and carers.

Chief executive Sally Tabbner congratulated volunteers for their hard work. She said: "Our chairman of trustees said we have 42 volunteers.

What he doesn’t necessarily take into account are our board of trustees as well and there are a further 12 trustees.

"We couldn't do what we do here if it wasn't for our volunteers. Essentially, they are 50-odd people that we don't have to recruit and pay for.

Budget discussions for county council WEST SUSSEX County Council will meet today (Friday) to agree the budget for 2019/20 which includes a number of investments in key projects across the county.

The meeting, at County Hall, Chichester, will hear how the proposed 2019/20 budget of £574.9m has been balanced.

It will also hear about significant planned investments in key priority areas as set out in the West Sussex Plan.

These include: An additional £6.1 million new investment in children and young people’s services and an additional £7.3 million investment in adults and health.

Additional investment in special support centres to help to keep students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools with their peers and in their local area.

An additional £3 million in extra care schemes to help keep older people living independently for longer.

A further £44.5 million investment in a sustainable energy programme which includes the installation of solar farms and battery storage on unused council land.

A £5 million programme to create community hubs and protect key services by bringing them together under one roof. £13.8 million investment in corporate and fire fleet vehicles and £1.8 million in specialist fire equipment to support the fire and rescue service.

A £22.5 million investment in digital infrastructure supporting businesses and rural communities.

Since 2010, the council has saved more than £200m and in the same

period, government funding has been cut by £145m.

The county council faced a challenging financial gap of £50.9m for 2019/20 alone, due to increasing demand on social care services and a continued reduction in central government funding.

As a result, it has identified £23.4m-worth of savings across a number of services.

It is proposed the remaining amount is found by increasing council tax by 4.99 per cent, which includes a dedicated 2 per cent to fund adult social care.

This increase would mean an additional £1.27 per week for the average Band D household.

County council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “Over the years, we have delivered significant savings, so we’re used to working in a challenging financial situation.

“We are still delivering key services to our residents and supporting those in need, and fulfilling our statutory obligations under our West Sussex plan.

“It’s not all bleak – through our capital programme we are investing in our

communities across the county.

“When we need to, we are also investing to save and we are investing to generate much-needed income.”

Members of the county council will meet to formally agree the final budget and the level of council tax.

Michael Turner started volunteering by holding watercolour painting sessions at Sage House from day one. He said: "I really enjoy it. My mother had dementia for the last two years of her life and it was the early stages. Thank God she never forgot who I was, that would have been one of the worst things.

"Being here now for so long, I can see the changes in people, but what we do here, they do things with fun, it's very light-hearted. I enjoy it immensely, I get such enjoyment from it.

"You are giving relief to the carers as well, which is so important."

` County crowdfunding A CROWDFUNDING platform – a first for the south east – has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local good causes.

The West Sussex Crowd has currently helped 77 worthwhile groups raise funds since it launched last year in May. West Sussex residents have really got behind this crowdfunding platform with more than 1,000 backers pledging more than £200,000 to 38 successful projects.

Charities, sports clubs and music schools are among those to benefit so far.

Examples include the Regis School of Music, Grow Chichester Community Garden, Burpham Playground and the charity, Teens Construct to Connect.

Of the £223,076 raised, £140,060 was pledged by businesses, residents and partner funds. The other £75,006 has been awarded by West Sussex County Council through its community initiative fund.

Debbie Kennard, county council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “This is brilliant news.

"I am absolutely delighted to see the West Sussex Crowd is proving so successful and benefiting so many fantastic local projects.

“I would urge anyone looking to gather funds and support to join the crowd and see for yourselves the difference it can make!”

Sir, A serious case of clairvoyance illness has broken out in Bognor Regis. It is official and a blank sheet of paper with the heading ‘Proposed Pavilion Park’ has caused this.

No details, just a blank sheet of paper, has caused this outbreak of clairvoyance sickness among political activists opposing anything Arun.

I asked my friend at the NHS if there was any cure. She said no – but the general public are at not at risk but we should wait until after the May local elections before a cure is found.

Sir, Thank you for always giving a fair report concerning our town.

Last week's report on the theatre was as you heard it. However, I do wish to make it perfectly clear to all members of the public that the town council supports our wonderful theatre 100 per cent.

The issue is with our grant aid system, and how it works fairly with each applicant who has to comply with the strict rules enforced

by the council.

We have granted monies to the theatre over the past three years to the tune of £30,000.

This year, we refused a grant owing to the fact they have not adhered to our requirements.

All other applicants are treated in the same way. We will, of course, be happy to have the theatre apply next year.

Sir, I would like to thank a guard on a particular journey and also, as a regular passenger, to make a strong case for keeping guards on trains at all times.

I was travelling on a train from Brighton to Portsmouth on December 27, 2018, early evening. The train left, I think, around 7pm from Brighton, when I fell ill and had to ask a passenger for help.

She immediately went to find the guard who came at once and reassured me he would be seeking medical help immediately by phone – which he did.

I believe Barnham was the next stop, where paramedics were waiting and entered the train to help me.

The guard stayed with me, giving me reassurance until the ambulance arrived.

It was deemed that I needed to be admitted to hospital immediately as I was showing signs of sepsis with very high blood pressure and fever.

The guard made everything run smoothly and I was taken by ambulance to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester.

Thankfully, I have fully recovered and am now back home.

I would like to stress that it seems inconceivable that there should be any threat to remove guards from trains.

In my circumstances, I would just have had another passenger to try to get help and had my carriage been empty or, indeed, had passengers who did not know how to respond, I would have been in a very vulnerable situation.

I also believe that, without the guard on the train, the call to the emergency services would have taken far longer – worringly so in my situation.

Film scores are often regarded as disposable music but Gibbons took on the project of reconstructing Malcolm Arnold’s score for the 1965 The Heroes of Telemark film, recreating the scenes in sound. A more familiar film theme, that of ET – Adventures on Earth, by John Williams, opened the second half of the programme.

Another link with film was Erich Korngold, whose Violin Concerto in D featured soloist Jennifer Pike in a lyrical performance. Melody was also at the heart of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5 in E minor with the orchestra conveying every nuance of expression.

Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s next concerts at Worthing are on March 10 and April 7. They will be in Chichester during June, during the city’s festival – don’t miss them.

1985 - Ruby Tuesday film at Chichester Cinema at New Park IN the future, a clerk (Jonathan Pryce) at the allpowerful Ministry of Information sticks to his ideals and ends up crushed by the system in this half comedy, half horror story from former 'Monty Python' animator Terry Gilliam.

Like Orwell's novel '1984', which it echoes, the future is seen from a 1940's perspective. Jonathan Pryce stars, with Robert De Niro making a cameo appearance as an excessively diligent sewage inspector! Controversial and misunderstood on its initial 1985 release and visually stunning, this Kafkaesque film is an underrated classic partly written by Tom Stoppard, and is now ripe for revaluation.

The large supporting cast includes Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Katherine Helmond, Michael Palin, Jim Broadbent and Ian Richardson.

FROM visionary filmmakers James Cameron (Avatar) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), comes Alita: Battle Angel, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE New Season 2019

Daniel Evans, Artistic Director CHICHESTER Festival Theatre’s Festival 2019 has been announced today by artistic director Daniel Evans, offering the colourful variety of work for which Chichester is renowned.

New for 2019 is The Spiegeltent, a unique venue for an eclectic range of events.

Festival 2019 includes powerful world premieres, two musicals, Shakespeare, pertinent revivals of 20th and 21st century classics and brand new family shows.

Headline actors include Hugh Bonneville, Clare Burt, Nancy Carroll, Hadley Fraser, Sheila Hancock, Dervla Kirwan, Gerald Kyd, Josie Lawrence, James Nesbitt, Hyoie O’Grady, Amara Okereke, John Simm and Rachael Stirling.

Directors new to the Festival are Nicole Charles, Paul Foster, Paul Miller, Daniel Hill and Holly Race Roughan, alongside Lucy Betts, Daniel Evans, Richard Eyre, Kate Hewitt, Rachel Kavanaugh, Dale Rooks and Jeremy Sams.

A programme of talks and activities will offer extra insight into Festival 2019. Highlights include talks with Tim Firth, Sheila Hancock and Roy Williams; a centenary celebration of Iris Murdoch; and a literary lunch with Daniel Rosenthal discussing his collection of letters from the National Theatre archive.

Sweatbox: A Prison Van in Motion is an immersive theatre experience offering a unique insight into the criminal justice system, performed by members of Clean Break.

Family friendly events range from Michael Morpurgo and Virginia McKenna reading extracts from The Butterfly Lion to community singalong Oh What A Beautiful Mornin’, and workshops for young people inspired by C.S. Lewis and Macbeth. Kate Mosse hosts a full programme of pre- and post-show discussions on each production.

In October 2019, a Spiegeltent will be installed next to the Festival Theatre on Oaklands Park – a unique venue with its own personality, style and atmosphere. As well as providing an immersive experience for Roy Williams’s Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads, it will play host to an eclectic mix of cabaret, music and special events: from a comedy club and drag night, to a quiz, a prologue scratch night and the annual Fun Palaces celebration on October 6. The full programme will be announced in May. Daniel Evans said: "Festival 2019 continues our aim of giving audiences the breadth of work they expect and relish. We’re premiering four plays: two by our new Writer-inResidence, Anna Ledwich, including a brand new adaptation of one of Michael Morpurgo’s own favourite books, The Butterfly Lion; Nicholas Wright’s fascinating 8 Hotels, which examines the political repercussions of private passions; and we’re delighted to be partnering with Headlong and The Lowry on Cordelia Lynn’s Hedda Tesman.

Plenty SUSAN Traherne is a former secret agent. Her heroic work with the Special Operations Executive in Nazi-occupied France brought her extremes of danger, as well as adventures and romance.

Twenty years on she is living a very different existence in London, as the wealthy wife of a diplomat. Her strained marriage and altered circumstances have threatened her identity and trapped her in a destructive nostalgia for her wartime idealism.

In a post-war land of plenty, Susan battles for her own body and mind, as Britain loses its role in the world.

Using a non-linear structure, the drama dips backwards and forwards in time to explore how the past and present coexist.

On its first appearance at the National Theatre in 1978, David Hare’s play caused a furore and is now accepted as a modern classic. His previous plays for Chichester include South Downs (2011) and Young Chekhov (2015).

CELEBRATED writer CS Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, splits his time between an ordered domestic routine at home with his brother, Warnie, and the academic rigour of his dispassionate, all-male Oxford college.

His evenings are spent replying to his many correspondents. One stands out: vivid, expressive, New York poet Joy Gresham. When she arrives in England with her young son, Douglas, everything Lewis believed to be true about life and love is thrown into question. And a relationship begins which will take them both to the extremities of pain and joy.

William Nicholson’s much-loved play premiered in the West End in 1989, winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and being nominated for a Tony Award on its subsequent Broadway run.

Originally, a 1985 television drama, it became a feature film in 1993.

Hugh Bonneville returns to Chichester to play Lewis, following his acclaimed performance in An Enemy of the People (2016). His many television and film appearances include Downton Abbey, W1A and Paddington.

HANDSOME cowboy Curly McLain is head over spurs for local farm owner Laurey Williams. But lonely ranchhand Jud Fry has his sinister sights set on her too.

But in mid-century American society, they are not all equals.

Three stories connect across time and across technologies as history haunts the present and secrets are unearthed by a community in turmoil.

Using digital technology and live action, this promenade performance through the streets of Chichester asks: can an individual alter history by changing the channel?

Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s renowned biennial outdoor productions include Grimm Tales (2017) and the award-winning Running Wild (2015).

CFT’s new writer-in-residence, Anna Ledwich,

adapted Beauty and the Beast for CFYT in 2017 and was co-Artistic Director of Theatre on the Fly at Chichester in 2012. Director Daniel Hill has devised and directed over 40 productions for young people, including promenade productions of Alice’s Adventures and Wind in the Willows.

Cordelia Lynn’s Hedda Tesman breathes new life into Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, asking what we inherit, what we endure and how we carry our history.

Holly Race Roughan directs this vital exploration of motherhood, power and sabotage.

Cordelia Lynn was the recipient of the 2017 Harold Pinter Commission. Her works include One for Sorrow and Lela and Co for the Royal Court and the libretto for Miranda at the Opéra Comique, Paris.

Her plays, Best Served Cold (Vaults Festival) and Believers Anonymous (Rosemary Branch), were both directed by Holly Race Roughan.

Hedda Tesman will be designed by Anna Fleischle.

This Headlong co-production will play at The Lowry, Salford for three weeks, immediately following the Chichester run.

Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads

by Roy Williams Directed by Nicole Charles October 5 – November 2, The Spiegeltent SATURDAY October 7. Gina, landlady of The King George pub, has a lot on her plate. The England v Germany World Cup qualifying match is about to start, the pub football team is about to charge in and the TV’s on the blink.

Over the next few hours, national defeat looms and xenophobic tensions rise, fuelled by the inarticulate fury of the pub team captain, Lawrie, and the insidious propaganda of right-wing extremist Alan.

And while policeman Lee struggles to keep the peace, disillusioned squaddie Mark and Gina’s bullied son, Glen, are fighting their own demons.

Premiered at the National Theatre in 2002, Roy Williams’s ferocious, funny and disturbing play takes aim at what it means to be black, white and English in 21st century Britain. Scoring high on foul language, threat and vulgar humour, Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Roy Williams’s award-winning plays have also been staged at the RSC and the Royal Court. Nicole Charles’s recent work

includes Emilia at Shakespeare’s Globe and in the West End. Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads will be performed in The Spiegeltent, which will be transformed into a pub setting to create an immersive theatrical experience.

This faithful adaptation of L Frank Baum’s classic novel was originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and

Frantic farce leaves audience all at sea Theatre review 

Charlie Stemp, who delighted Chichester in his break-out starring role in Half a Sixpence in 2016, was the actor seemingly most at home amid the waves and troughs. As steward Dvornichek, his physicality in pretending to be aboard a transAtlantic liner and comic timing with the running gag of downing Cognac brought the first laughs.

He was also instrumental in making sense of the lightweight story, set in the 1930s, involving two

playwrights and a composer trying to finish writing their next work before arriving in New York, with difficulties caused by the composer's fiancee, actress Natasha (Issy Van Randwyck), and her leading man Ivor (Simon Dutton).

John Partridge is known through his appearances on television and, although as Turai he had crucial dialogue, struggled to make himself heard from the thrust stage, not helped by adopting a mid-European

accent, presumably in tribute to Stoppard's inspiration, Ferenc Molnar's Play at the Castle.

Matthew Cottle, as the other playwright Gal, Rob Ostlere, in the role of lovelorn composer Adam, and Dutton coped better with both accents and flow of the play while the songs, by genuine musical maestro Andre Previn, were rather irrelevant.

Thank goodness for Charlie, who steered the ship into a calm anchorage.

Turkish delights bring warmth and satisfaction

Although it only has been opened for a few weeks, the owners spent months converting the former shop into a smart, bright comfortable venue, which has the unusual feature of an open cooking area where customers can see chefs at work at the

barbecue-type grill.

As three of us were dining, we were able to sample a number of dishes with choices guided by the smiling and helpful staff, although the menu also gave good descriptions for people who are unfamiliar with Turkish cuisine.

While trying to decide from the long list of both hot and cold starters, we enjoyed olives with flat bread, which also came in useful to accompany the moreish dips and filling lentil soup. An interesting small touch was a fresh lemon slice to squeeze into the delicious soup.

`New luxury restaurant in Chichester

- no easy task with so much choice, which included vegetarian offerings, fish and salads. Most of the meat dishes are based on lamb or chicken and we took the advice of our waiter and plumped for a lamb shank, lamb shish and chargrilled king prawns.

My lamb shank was a substantial piece of deliciously tender meat, which fell off the bone, while the shish was equally succulent but with slightly more of a kick, an acknowledgement of the restaurant's use of herbs flown in from an organic farm in Turkey. THe prawns disappeared quickly - a sure sign of decent cooking.

THe shank was served as a casserole with carrots and small potatoes, the shish had a

delicate yogurt and lemon sauce while bulgar wheat and salad were served alongside.

Although we were probably too full for dessert, we made an effort to try wonderfully crispy yet soft baklava accompanied with a superb raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream.

Turkish wine is available alongside bottles from more usual wine-producing countries and Reina Kitchen is making a feature of its cocktails, including house specials.

THe restaurant offers weekday two-course lunches at £11.45.

Tangmere Aviation Museum open for half-term TODAY (Friday) the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum opens its doors to visitors following its annual two-month closure to the public.

In addition to repainting and cleaning the museum, a number of important aircraft and display changes have been made.

Visitors this half-term will see a major change to the location of aircraft, cockpits and simulators in the Merston aircraft hall. The jet aircraft associated with the World Airspeed Record attempts (Meteor, Hunter and Swift) are now displayed, together and the full size Lysander replica, purchased by the museum last year, which has been moved to a corner of the hall to enable an additional exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the SOE’ to be curated by the curatorial team.

This exhibition includes a film on the recruitment, training and operational activities of SOE agents (spies). Additionally, displays from last year’s successful ‘Tangmere Aerodrome 100’ exhibition have now been

moved into the museum to provide visitors with an insight on the formation and early years of RAF Tangmere.

For younger visitors, the museum has created ten family activities, including the ever popular ‘Tangmere Teddy Bear Challenge’, which family members can pick up from the new ‘Family Activity Station’.

Adults can ‘fly’ the Lightning fast jet cockpit simulator for no additional charge to the admittance fee and in addition to other interactive simulators there are cockpits for both adults and children to enjoy. For refreshments, look no further than the NAAFI tea room.

The museum is looking forward to another successful year and hoping to improve on last year’s record of number of visitors (over 33,000).

There's the only traditional working print shop in the south of England, where you can have a go at printing your own souvenir certificate to take home.

Community News & Views fit A resort g for a Kin IT WAS 90 years ago King George V and Queen Mary came to Bognor for their historic stay.

The Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of The Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Friday, February 8 - The Lancet and the British Medical Journal this week contain short statements in similar terms on the King's recent progress, dealing in particular with the significance of the ray-therapy treatment which he is receiving. The following quotation is from The Lancet: 'The removal of the King to Bognor marks a definite stage in his illness, but we protest again that is premature to speak of convalescence.'

Monday, February 11 - The King, lying in a motor-ambulance, travelled from Buckingham Palace to Craigweil House, Aldwick, near Bognor, on Saturday.

Immediately after the departure of the King the Royal Standard was lowered from the flagstaff above the Palace, denoting the transference of the Court to Craigweil House.

He was greeted with sympathetic cheers by the crowds, numbering in all many thousands, that lined the roads along which he passed through Leatherhead, Dorking, Horsham, Billingshurst and Pulborough to the coast. (64 miles) His doctors reported on Saturday evening that he had not suffered undue fatigue, and yesterday, although the weather on the South Coast was very cold, his condition continued to improve.

The two doctors made the journey on Saturday in a car which closely followed the ambulance and when they had satisfied themselves that the King was comfortably settled in his new home, Lord Dawson of Penn returned to London. Sir Stanley Hewett is staying at Craigweil House.

(The King departed about 10.30am and arrived at 1.24pm.

Queen Mary travelled by a separate journey and arrived 30 minutes earlier.)

EMPLOYEES at two Southern Co-op stores around Bognor Regis are looking for good causes to back this year.

The outlets in Hawthorn Road in Bognor Regis and Yapton's Main Road are seeking charity partners.

Anyone interested in applying should meet one of Southern Co-op's Love Your Neighbourhood themes - creating greener, safer, healthier and more inclusive neighbourhoods.

The new applications are being sought after nearly £20,000 was raised by the company's stores around Sussex for their charity partners last year.

Those who benefited included 1st Yapton and Ford Scout Group, Bognor Regis Lions Club, St Wilfrid's Hospice, Sussex Snowdrop Trust and The Point resource unit for people aged 18 to 50.

The donations were raised by a variety of activities at Southern Co-op's stores. These included a Hallowe'en fancy dress event at the Hawthorn Road store, pictured above.

Jessica Hughes, community investment manager at Southern Co-op, said: "This is a really exciting time of year as we look back at all the amazing things our colleagues have done in the last year.

"We also look forward to all the interesting new opportunities and partnerships in the year to come.

"Across all our retail stores in the south east, their fundraising activities have meant more than £105,000 will be donated to a wide range of local causes.

"But it is not just about the money. Our colleagues really do get passionate about their local charity partner and can end up doing more than just fundraising."

DISABLED people will be able to get out more in Bognor Regis after a donation from one of the town's stores.

Southern Co-op's Hawthorn Road branch has donated £700 to Bognor Regis Lions Club to enable it to buy a new mobility scooter as part of its latest fundraising project, pictured above.

This is provide more of the vehicles to be hired out by Bognor Regis Shopmobility.

Richard Johns, of the Lions club, said: "We recently learned that the number of scooters available in the area has reduced from 40 to 28, which could mean the volunteers aren't able to keep up with demand in the summer.

"Around 700 people use the Shopmobility facilities on short-term lets and it really helps give people back their independence and to manage everyday life.

"It is unthinkable to imagine people unable to get out and about just because there aren't enough

SAVVY students at Felpham Community College have reached the national final of a business competition.

The team of four Year 9 students won the regional final of the Premier League enterprise challenge.

Rudy Garrigoux, Chloe Juniper, Tiffany Mills and Jessica Stemp, pictured below, represented Brighton and Hove Albion against rivals from Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham and Southampton in the regional heat.

They spent December and January researching and developing their business plan. Their winning idea was to stage an event on the beach for 1,000 people in line with the task of encourage young people aged between 18-23 to go to football matches at Brighton's stadium.

The business plan featured music and food outlets, a chance to train with and meet the players and a loyalty card that would give them discounts or free tickets for matches by collecting loyalty stamps.

Gary Treharne, the college's business and vocational studies teacher, said: "Our Year 9s have worked incredibly hard with this competition, right from their first ideas at the beginning of last term, through to developing these ideas into a competent and professional business plan and presentation and going on to adapt this further for the regional finals.

"The regional heat was tough, competition was high and everyone who took part was extremely professional.

"Our team were driven and did an outstanding job which we are really proud of them for.

"We are all now looking forward to the national final held in March where we will be competing against the five other regional winners.

The team members are again refining their idea to be able to take on the best business students in the country.

They said: "Winning the first heat and the regional finals has been brilliant and now we are making final adjustments to our presentation ready for the national finals.

"We are a bit nervous but it is a great thing to be involved with so are looking forward to it lots."

They added: "The Premier League enterprise programme is a course we completed about resilience, communication, team work and financial capability - all skills we need as we get older.

"It was an interesting programme to take part in and from that we were picked to take part in the competition."

SUSSEX police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne said she was ‘increasingly frustrated’ by how long it took for some 101 calls to be answered.

Mrs Bourne was speaking at a meeting in Worthing Town Hall when she was questioned by councillors.

Cllr Joss Loader (I, Marine) told Mrs Bourne that residents had reported waiting between 45 minutes and an hour for calls to be answered – with many giving up completely. She also asked how reported crime figures could be seen to be accurate if people were unable to even get through.

Mrs Bourne told members more people were reporting issues online, but added money from the coming council tax increase would be used to address the problems with the 101 service.

Describing contact with the public as ‘absolutely fundamental’, she added: “For a lot of people, the first time they ever come into contact with a police officer is over the phone so that 101 nonemergency number is absolutely key.

“I have been increasingly frustrated, as have many members of the public, with the call handling times.”

A Sussex Police report showed the average completion times for calls in October and November were 20 minutes 23 seconds and 12 minutes 25 seconds respectively.

Mrs Bourne told the Worthing meeting that a lot of the problems could be solved by ‘having enough people to pick the phones up’.

Main dish with mango Jerk chicken kebabs with mango salsa Ingredients: • 2 tsp jerk seasoning • 1 tbsp olive oil • Juice 1 lime • 4 skinless chicken breasts, chopped into chunks • 1 large yellow pepper, cut into 2cm cubes • 100g bag rocket leaves, to serve For the salsa • 320g pack mango chunks, diced • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and diced • Bunch spring onions, finely chopped • 1 red chilli, chopped (optional)

Method: 1. Mix together the jerk seasoning, olive oil and lime juice. Toss the chicken in it and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 20 mins, or up to 24 hours.

3. Make the salsa by mixing all the ingredients together with some seasoning – add a chopped red chilli if you like extra heat.

5. Heat the grill or barbecue to Medium. Thread the chicken onto 8 metal skewers divided by the yellow peppers – aim for 3 of each per skewer. Cook for 8 mins each side until cooked through and lightly charred. Serve with the salsa and rocket leaves.

Dessert with mango Passion-mango delight with coconut whip Ingredients: • 50g desiccated coconut • 2 tbsp granulated white sugar • 1 egg white For the passion-mango mousse • 4 really ripe mangoes • 6 really ripe passion fruits • Juice 1 lime • 2 gelatine leaves • 150ml double cream • 2 large egg whites • 85g golden caster sugar For the coconut whip • 1 large egg white • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tbsp Malibu Method: 1. First collect 8 glasses to serve your mousses in, and put to one side. Put the coconut and granulated sugar in a bowl and, using a hand blender, whizz together until finely chopped. In another bowl, froth the egg white using a fork. Dip each glass rim into the egg, shake off any excess, then dip into the coconut mixture. Leave to set and dry.

2. To make the mousse, cut all the flesh from the mangoes. Put the fruit into a blender or food

processor with the pulp from the passion fruit and lime juice. Blend to a smooth purée, then set a sieve over a large bowl and sieve to remove any passion fruit seeds. Put the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water to soften.

3. Heat the cream in a small saucepan until it’s just about to start bubbling. Turn off the heat.

Squeeze out the softened gelatine leaves to remove excess water, then stir into the cream. When they have completely melted and no gelatine streaks remain, stir this into the mango mixture.

4.

Beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the sugar and beat to a thick, shiny meringue mixture.

Fold a little of the mango mixture into the meringue with a big metal spoon or spatula. Gently fold in the rest (you’re trying to get rid of all the meringue streaks, while retaining as much air in the mousse as possible . Ladle into a jug and divide between the glasses. Chill overnight to set.

5.

To serve, beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the sugar and beat to a shiny, thick meringue, then beat in the Malibu. Spoon into a piping bag (or food bag with the corner snipped off ) and pipe a blob onto each mousse. To save time, do this 1 hr ahead and pop them back into the fridge.

Fire brigade has moved with times for our safety Service has used several premises to maintain a presence for more than 150 years WE regularly either see a fire engine on our roads or read stories in the press about their current use, but what about their history here in Bognor Regis?

The town’s fire brigade had their initial engine in February, 1865, and it was housed in temporary premises in Sudley Mews. The Local Board of Commissioners had looked through catalogues to find the most suitable engine, which was to be a County Brigade Engine costing £75.

It would need 16 men and they also had to purchase some scaling ladders costing a further 45 shillings (£20.25p). They advertised for persons to work on the engine stating that they ‘wanted 8 to 10 useful and intelligent artisans or mechanics of the town to form a volunteer fire brigade’.

Apparently, on one of their early turnouts it was reported that ‘the fire engine turned out one evening last week, and was, being a novelty, attended by a staff of excitable persons who really seemed ripe for active service’. In 1874, the brigade moved into its permanent premises in Waterloo Square where it was to lease the site for 21 years at £23 10s (£23.50) per year.

Eventually, premises were both inadequate

and needing serious repairs and a view was taken to find other premises. Interest was shown in Market Street and Ockley Road but eventually it was decided to purchase land in the High Street, near to The Sussex Hotel (today's William Hardwicke) which was built in 1899 costing £322 for the new station and the brigade moved from Waterloo Square to this site, where it stayed for more than 40 years.

A large alarm was fitted in a tower, which doubled as a drying area for the hose. Another £274 had to be invested in a steam engine, which required a pair of horses. However, if no horse was available, any passing horsedrawn vehicle was robbed of its horse for the benefit of the brigade.

A motorised vehicle was purchased in 1921.

In the early days. it was recorded by one of the early firemen that he worked a 12-hour shift and usually worked a seven-day week earning in the region of £1. It was not until 1902 discussions took place about linking some of the firemen with telephones. Hard to imagine in today’s instant communications world.

The station in the High Street remained in active use until the 1930s when there were numerous discussions on its continued use. By the start of the Second World War in

1939 the brigade was moved into their next location, a purpose-built construction in Clarence Road, by the side of the Town Hall.

However, with the start of the war, the construction was not fully completed and no drill tower or second floor was ever built.

The roof was covered, and a temporary tower built. I often wondered about the fire station as it seemed not to look finished, and indeed it was not. By the 1960s it was thought that a new station was required with a full drill tower and also more on the outskirts of the town to enable the engines to more easily reach destinations. Eventually, a site in West Meads Drive was chosen, and by August, 1975, the move was made and it is here the firefighters remain today.

There have been many significant occasions for the fire service over the years. Not least was the major fire in the railway station on Saturday, October 29, 1899. A glow was seen from the centre of the town and the volunteers were all contacted. It took more than eight minutes for them to reach the station, which was totally destroyed.

There have been other fires over the years., who remembers the Woolworths fire on August 31, 1978? This £2million fire was attended by 200 firemen and five fire appliances which arrived from over a 50 mile distance. In 1993 there was the catastrophic fire at Sainsbury’s in Chichester where engines were called from around the district.

Other events have been the hurricane in October 1987, when the brigade helped out around the area including a house in Linden Road which lost one complete exterior wall.

Fifty calls were made to the brigade for

assistance in relation to damage and injuries received in less than an hour.

What about the fire at the Marine Bar and Restaurant in August, 1994? This fire involved more than 120 firemen from around the area.

Eventually, this area was rebuilt and today is known as The Waverley.

I can recall, when I worked at Butlin’s, fire drills would be carried out. Occasionally, it would be a full exercise, both for the centre and also the brigades. The ‘test’ alarm would be activated and, because of the nature of the site, it would automatically engage with stations across the district.

All these engines and cars would descend on to the centre. Butlin's managers would be deployed to direct the engines. More recently was the major fire on the seafront when the Beach Hotel fish and chip shop was burned to the ground.

I am sure you can all remember major events in the town where it has been necessary to call out the fire service. Its operation today is, of course, very different from the early days but it still has volunteer firefighters, alongside the regular staff.

The service engages with its local community especially with open days where we can have a look around the station and see how it operates.

Groups can have an evening visit on training days to watch the exercises carried out weekly for our benefit. The men and their engine can be seen at local events to raise awareness of safety within the home, in a bid to reduce the number of smaller dangerous fires in homes and offices. These firefighters are our unsung heroes keeping us safe. Thank you.

This triple triumph in the world-renowned design competition represents the third consecutive year in which Kia has picked up a hat-trick of iF design awards, following similar successes in 2017 and 2018.

This achievement underscores Kia’s reputation for first-class design, which, for over a decade, has been shaped by Peter Schreyer, president of design and chief design officer for Kia Motors. The brand won its first iF Award in 2010, and has created at least one prize-winning model in every year since. Kia has now been awarded a total of 18 iF Awards for its vehicle designs.

The latest trophies have been awarded to each of the three all-new Ceed variants: the

five-door Ceed hatchback and Sportswagon models, launched in mid-2018, and the allnew ProCeed five-door shooting brake, which went on-sale in Europe this month.

A true European, the new model range has been designed at Kia’s European design centre in Frankfurt under the direction of Peter Schreyer and Gregory Guillaume, European head of design. Engineering and development was carried out by the brand’s research and development centre in Rüsselsheim, and all versions are manufactured in Slovakia.

Clear, straight lines characterise the design of the Ceed family, which takes inspiration from the Kia Stinger fastback grand tourer – itself an iF Award winner in 2018. The fivedoor Ceed hatchback is wider and lower than its predecessor, while the cabin is positioned further towards the rear of the car, for a sportier stance and shape. In profile, the powerful C-pillar gives the upper window line an elegant ‘half-moon’ shape.

Youth Offending Service - Appropriate Adult – West Sussex Youth Offending Service

West Sussex Youth Offending Service (YOS) works with children, young people, families, victims, communities and partner agencies to reduce and prevent youth crime. The main purpose of this role is to support young people aged 10 – 17 when they have been arrested and held in police custody in West Sussex. Tasks include: supporting and assisting the young person; ensuring the young person understands their rights; ensuring that the police act fairly and respect the rights of the young person; ensuring effective communication between the young person, police and others; and raising any concerns around the safety and well-being of the young person. You must be 21 years old or over to apply and they require a commitment of at least 1 year.

General Volunteer – The Regis Centre

The Regis Centre provides professional and commercial entertainment in the theatre to the people of Bognor Regis, as well as facilities for local people to engage in the performing arts. Volunteers are required to carry out various tasks within the Centre. There are various opportunities such as working in the Charity shop, Cafe, Box office, Administration, Stage work, Cleaning and general DIY. When there is an evening show some volunteers act as Ushers, cafe helpers and ice cream sellers. If you think you could help out with one or more of these tasks they would love to hear from you.

Self-advocacy Group Volunteer – Impact Initiatives

Impact provides support to 4 self-advocacy groups for people with learning disabilities across West Sussex. They have a volunteer opportunity to support Voice at their monthly meeting in Bognor Regis on the 1st Thursday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. Voice is a user-led group, run by and for people with learning disabilities with the help of the paid Group Supporter employed by Impact Initiatives. They aim to help each other to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to have a say in the things that affect them, raise awareness of their concerns and make life better for people with learning disabilities. At their meetings they talk about the things that are important to them.

The volunteer would work alongside the group facilitator and offer practical help at the meeting as well as helping group members to speak up for themselves and participate in the meetings.

Drivers and Outings Assistants – Contact 88

Contact 88 is a transport service for elderly and disabled people living in Chichester and the surrounding area. They provide a varied programme of outings (pub lunches, visits to places of interest and shopping trips) throughout the year. The “door-to-door” service and social contact are very important to elderly and disabled people; many of the passengers would otherwise be housebound and some have been going out with Contact 88 regularly for many years. They are looking for more volunteer Drivers and Outings Assistants for when they take elderly and disabled people out for trips, including collecting fares from clients where appropriate. You must be a patient, outgoing, enthusiastic and sociable person who is happy to work with elderly and disabled people.

Blues look to make it four in a row PostSport after narrow win over Sussex rivals CHICHESTER RFC's Paul Colley has praised his squad for stepping up and pulling the Blues away from the London South One dropzone.

The Oaklands Park side have now won their last three in a row, the latter of those being a 22-18 victory against leaders Brighton in front of a home crowd.

With a further match on familiar territory coming tomorrow against sixth-place Thurrock, Chi will want to continue their fine form and put more distance between them and the relegation zone.

Speaking after the Brighton win, Colley said: “The last few weeks have seen the squad really pull together - player availability has improved and performances on the pitch have been excellent.

"Havant, Dartfordians and, in particular, Brighton, gave us different challenges, but to a man the squad has stepped up to meet them.

"There is still a long way to go and we need more of the same. Hopefully, we will have a big crowd at Oaklands Park next week to take on the notoriously tough to beat Thurrock.”

Chi started on the front foot against their Sussex rivals, taking the lead through an early Henry Anscombe drop goal. But Brighton hit

back with a converted try. 3-7.

It stayed that way until 10 minutes before the break when Richard Ives dived over the line after some dominating forwards play.

The visitors rallied though and, despite being reduced to 14 for a late tackle on Anscombe, they bagged another score plus a penalty to take a 10-15 lead into the break.

Blues regained their composure and re-took the lead when Ben Polhill gathered a loose ball.

The lead was extended when Rhys Thompson ran the ball in from 40 yards.

A late penalty closed the gap to 22-18 and Brighton spurned a golden chance to win the match when a player slipped five yards out to gift the win to Chi. --Bognor RFC warmed up for their crunch clash with second-place Sandown & Shanklin tomorrow with a narrow 33-34 win at New Milton last weekend.

It means they stay third in the Hampshire Premier but level on points with the Isle of Wight side, having played one match more.

With Sandown the visitors to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (time - TBC), Bognor know that a victory will put them in pole position to seal the runners-up spot .

f 12 Tone Zone members finished the Worthing Half Marathon

BOGNOR Tone Zone's Kari Mack continued her impressive form on the road by coming home first of the club's cohort at the Worthing Half Marathon.

The rain stayed away this weekend.

However, it was extremely windy along the prom for the popular 13 mile race.

But Kari was not deterred as she came home with another very impressive time of 1 hour 26 minutes.

Another impressive performance was Anna Kari-Enes with 1:37 while Martin Playford grabbed one of two personal bests of the day with 1:49.

Ben Leney, Peter Ramsdale and Stan Mack all finished under 1:55 while Natalie Tribe battled through the wind to snatch a PB of 1:57.

Stuart Thomson and Lucy-Jayne Isitt also finished under the two hour mark while Zoe Hemes, Richard Hemsley and Bushka Sklandanek rounded off the Tone Zone entries with sub-2:30 finishes.

Back indoors, the youngsters from

Chichester Athletics Club will be looking to continue their fine form in the Sussex Sportshall competition.

A small squad of just six athletes took part in the first county event of the year last month but still managed to emerge with a hat-trick of first places from their efforts.

There was a double win in the two-lap sprint with new Sussex U11 record holder James Taylor maintaining his unbeaten run for the season with another “A” string win. He was backed up well by Sam Cato who ensured maximum points by winning the “B” string Ethan Cooper then scored for the team in both the long jump and speed bounce.

For the girls, Fleur Hollyer maintained her unbeaten run in the speed bounce. She also finished third in a hard fought two lap sprint.

For the under-13 girls, both Amelie McGurk and Lucy Hollyer had a busy afternoon coring in the four lap, speed bounce, long jump and shot putt before combining well in the eight lap paarlauf at the end of the match.

TRAMPOLINING: The Regis School pupils Izzy Hauxwell, Rosie Budge, Zoe Maskell and Finlay Russell are set to perform on the national stage after qualifying for trampolines National Development Southern Regional Championships to be held late March in Eastleigh.

City have silverware in their sights ahead of Saltdean semi

Lions lack the killer instinct PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea believes his side's inability to finish sides off has cost the club dear this season.

A promotion push and perhaps even some silverware was the aim for those associated with the Nyetimber Lane side at the start of the season.

But an injury crisis led to a poor run of form during the winter months which has seen the Lions slip down into midtable of the SCFL Premier.

Now, attention has switched towards rebuilding for next season with a number of young players given the chance to shine.

But joint-managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds gained an insight into what is needed to challenge at the top when they suffered a 3-1 reverse at home to Newhaven last weekend.

With an equally tough match away at fourth-place Horsham YMCA to come tomorrow (3pm), the Pagham chairman will want to see a reaction from his young side.

Shea said: "It is a very competitive league. It looks like Chichester and Newhaven are the frontrunners and are set for promotion. The reason

they are is because they have finished teams off "There's not much difference in terms of games lost between us and those two sides.

The big difference is we've drawn far too many."

Despite eight places separating them in the league, Pagham matched Newhaven for long periods of the match last weekend.

Harry Prisk opened the scoring for the Lions after he converted a through ball from Harry Hendricks, who was playing his last match for the club before moving to Devon.

But the Dockers showed their clinical streak, equalising before the break with a Robbie Keith header.

Into the second half the visitors sealed the win as Lee Robinson and Callum Connor struck late Shea added: "I have been surprised by the quality of the teams this year.

"We went to Eastboune United recently who were bottom but had a new manager and new chairman and there was not a lot between us on a cold Tuesday and we drew 0-0.

"They’ve now carried on that form, so there's not much between people."

CHICHESTER CITY'S season could get even better as they look to make it into a cup final for the second year in a row.

Miles Rutherford's high-flying side made 2018 a year to remember when they defeated local rivals Pagham to lift the RUR Cup. A year on, the SCFL Premier leaders have a chance to reach the final of another competition when they face off against Saltdean United in the semi final of the Peter Bentley Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm) at Steyning's The Shooting Field.

With their opponents already taking four points off Chi this season in the league, the Oaklands Park side will want to get one over the Tigers, who are fifth in the league.

Before then, City will head to Crawley Down Gatwick in the league tomorrow (3pm) looking to keep their lead at the top of the league intact.

They do so off the back of a 1-1 draw at Peacehaven, a result that was only sealed thanks to a late strike by Sam Ndlovu.

It means City are now 13 games unbeaten in the league although with second-place Newhaven winning, their lead of five points was cut to just three.

Smith: there's long way to go

CHICHESTER CITY Ladies boss Aaron Smith is calling on his players to keep pushing as they look to bounce back from their first league defeat of 2019.

The leaders of the Women's National Southern Premier dominated proceedings against Oxford United at the weekend.

But a failure to convert chances meant Chi fell to a 1-0 loss at the in-form side from the city of spires.

Chi will have a bit of time to reflect on the match after the midweek match against Portsmouth was postponed and no fixture

this weekend before returning to action on February 24 at Cardiff City.

By that point their five point lead at the top could be reduced as second-place Coventry United play one of their four matches in hand.

But speaking after the Oxford defeat, Smith remained positive, saying: "It will be a blow but Cov have a lot of games as they have had a lot of postponements.

"They will have a lot of games in a short space of time, they may fatigue or get injuries - you just don't know.

"There's a long way to go and pre-season we

wanted to finish top four in this division.

"We want to play the way we want to play and get my philosophy through the players that's working.

"Top four was the original plan but now we're here we want to keep pushing, keep playing, keep smiling and get more points and see where we finish."

It could have been oh so different for City as they had the better chances in a tight match against Oxford.

Molly Clark, Tash Stephens and new addition Kim Stenning all spurned chances.

But it was United who took the lead on the hour mark when, after Chi failed to clear a corner, Georgia Timms headed home.

It was Chi's third defeat of the season and compared to a year ago, they are 14 points better off at this stage of the campaign - a fact the manager was keen to point out.

Smith said: "I'm looking at the positives.

They were a Super League side last year "They have only lost one in the last seven and we knew they would be strong and press us.

"While they were in the Super League we were a mid table side in this division and they are celebrating for beating us which shows how far we have come.

"We dominated the game and I can't ask for more than that. The ball didn't go in the net and a few decisions which could have gone our way with a different ref didn't get given but on the whole I'm happy with how we played."

Home comforts key for Sids' Rec return SIDLESHAM will be out to show that home is where the heart is as they return to the Recreation Ground for the first time in a month tomorrow.

Steve Bailey's side have proved to be more than a match for their rivals on their return to SCFL Division One. With a third of the season left, Sids sit tenth in the 17-team division, 14 points clear of the bottom three.

But Bailey will want to ensure his side continue fighting to the end - and they can show other teams what they are made of when they kick off a three game home stand against a series of tough opponents.

Tomorrow, fourth-place AFC Varndeanians are the visitors (3pm) before third-place

Bexhill United visit the following week.

Fifth bottom Oakwood round off the home stand on March 2.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey are still fourth despite an excellent 1-0 victory over Bexhill last weekend.

Joe Bennett got the goal for the Blues which made it eight games unbeaten for Daren Pearce's side.

Next up is a trip to seventh-place Hailsham before the rearranged Division One cup tie at Wick on Tuesday (7.45pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will want to play their first match in three weeks when they head to Upper Beeding tomorrow (2pm).

The Robins sit seventh in the division while their opponents have slipped to third bottom.

Pearce urges Rocks to kick on as playoff chase gathers pace Next Game

BISHOP'S ST'FORD (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the club are finally hitting their stride as they look to make it five wins from six to continue a playoff push.

Rocks continued their fine start to 2019 with a commanding 2-0 win over AFC Hornchurch last weekend.

Those three points lifted the Nyewood Lane side up to third in the Bostik Premier and gave fans hope that a place in the end of season lottery is in their grasp.

A win at Bishop's Stortford tomorrow (3pm) would do that cause no end of good.

But, in an extremely tight division where just six points separate Rocks and Brightlingsea in 12th, Pearce knows that Bognor must keep on picking up points to seal a top five finish.

With a number of key players nearing a return from injury, the Bognor boss told The Post that the playoffs was still achievable.

He said: " My aim every year is to make sure we don’t get relegated. We didn’t achieve that last year, but I think we’ve done that already this term.

"As the league is so competitive it could go to the last few games of season whether you end up in the playoffs or finish halfway.

"Our next aim is to finish in the playoffs but it will be a challenge unless we can get everyone fit.

"With a fit squad then we can definitely make them."

The win at home to AFC Hornchurch was sealed thanks to a goal in each half.

Against battling opponents, it was two tough tackling midfielders who did the damage with the returning Theo Widdrington slotting home a first half penalty before Richard Gilot lashed home the second just after the break after good work from skipper Harvey Whyte.

In truth, Rocks never really looked troubled - but Pearce is warning that tomorrow's trip to Hertfordshire to face a side who have won three of their last four will be far from easy.

Their task will be made even tougher with long-term absentees Keaton Wood, Calvin Davies and Gary Charman joined by Jimmy Wild on the injured list for the trip to the other side of the M25.

There are also doubts to top-scorer Jimmy Muitt, who missed the Hornchurch match, as well as defender Chad Field and Mason Walsh, who picked up knocks in the last outing.

Pearce said there was some positive news coming out of the Rocks camp though - with Wood and Davies returning to training for the first time in months.

Pearce said: "There’s the slight possibility that all seven will be missing [for the trip to Stortford].

"It does make it challenging but I'll have to do what I've always done - I'll have to pick up the phone and ask for favours but people don’t like letting good players go."

Albion await in the Senior Cup THEY stand just one match away from an end of season showdown at a Premier League ground.

But Rocks' bid for a first Sussex Senior Cup final in five seasons could see them come up against the favourites for the title.

Bognor have been drawn against either Brighton & Hove Albion development squad or SCFL Premier side Eastbourne Town in the last four of the county cup.

The match is due to be played at Lancing's Culver Road on either Wednesday, February 27, or Tuesday, March 5.

With victory on either of those evenings gifting Bognor fans a day out at The Amex Stadium, it will be an evening that many at the Nye Camp will be looking forward to.

But it will not be an easy task - particularly if Albion win through in their quarter final.

The Seagulls' development side have won the competition for the last two seasons.

With a host of youth internationals and players with top flight experience in their ranks - as well as on loan Rock Joe Tomlinson, the Albion youngsters have performed well against other Premier League under 23 sides.

This included defeating Nicky Butt's Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup.

THEY call this time of the season moving time as things, in a very competitive division, can change so quickly.

We have turned it round a bit since I last wrote this column a fortnight ago.

That's what it happens when everything is so tight.

When you have two good results in the space of a week then you can get right back in it again.

The only thing that is slightly annoying is that if we had managed to do this all season then perhaps we would be challenging the top two and be right amongst it.

I don't think we played as good football as we could do in the 2-0 win over AFC Hornchurch last weekend.

But playing good, attractive football is not always the reason for winning games; you have to do the ugly stuff well.

In the matches against Burgess Hill, Worthing and again on Saturday we worked hard and got the three points.

I wouldn't say the result was flattering - they didn't cause us too many problems and I think the scoreline was fair.

We were comfortable throughout and did not really push ourselves.

I think we were focussed on what Jack said before the match - everyone wants to play nice football but the main thing was the result.

You can play as badly as you want but as long as you get the win that's all that matters.

It was nice too to pick up the man of the match award, too.

Sometimes people ask me what's the secret to performing well. The truth is I don't know!

Perhaps I've been listening to Ole Gunnar Solskjear who said that football is all about passing forward, working hard and that's it.

I don't really like Manchester United but that really sunk in!

In all seriousness, Theo coming back in helped us out.

It's also good to have the Pompey lads up top.

You always know with those two in the team we have a chance of scoring and winning matches.

You saw that at Merstham when Dan got the ball as it was fed to him.

Then, out of nowhere, he rolled the defender and slotted one home.

As for Brad, he can put them in from anywhere so it's great to have them on your side.

That match at Merstham was a real team performance.

We went 3-5-2 to keep it more solid at the back and it was just the case of everyone working hard for each other.

We defended hard towards the end and the pitch was not great, it was just about winning ugly.

We know we have it in there.

Bishop's Stortford will be similar tomorrow.

I think the match will depend on how we approach it.

If we go there to play nice football then we could get beat. But if we graft and fight to get at least get a point then you never know what may happen.

A point away is never a bad point but if we want to get up there and challenge the top two we have to look to get all three.

With the position we are in now, it will be disappointing not to get into the playoffs We still have got to play Haringey and Dorking - it will be difficult to catch them but we need to give it a go, take each game as it comes and try to win it.

If we win six or seven games in a row, then we could get close.

We also had the news that we could be playing Albion in the semi final of the Senior Cup. The first thing I thought was that if I play right back I will kick Joe Tomlinson!

It will definitely a footballing game.

But we have to do ugly things well, need to press and put them under pressure and see where it gets us.
