Traffic conditions in Bersted had already been made worse by the lack of a link between the two A259 Bognor Regis relief road sections, she said.

Shripney Lane resident Ian Hall said: "THis scheme is madness. Why end the new road to the north of us when, for the sake of another half a mile, it could be

connected to the relief road?

"We have had two deaths in the past eight years along here. THe proposals will make the situation more dangerous."

Dave Ponsfold, who was born on Oldlands Farm on the A29 and lived close to the area ever since, said: "At least, with the level crossing, when the gates are down, it gives us a chance to get out of our properties.

Extra changes to new pool planned BUTLIN'S has applied to amend the design of its new ÂŁ40m swimming pool in Bognor Regis.

THe holiday company has asked Arun District Council to vary some of the 27 conditions it imposed when it granted planning permission for the pool.

Tom Edmunds, Butlin's planning consultant, says in a report with the application: "THis application proposes minor material amendments to reduce the height of the flume tower, adjust the design of the rapid river ride, changes to the landscaping and promenade, removal of some windows and rooflights, changes to doors, adjustments to some of the proposed materials and the addition of louvres.

"THe proposed alterations to the scheme are not considered to amend the scale or nature of the development and are not substantially different to the extant consent.

"Indeed, the reduced height of the flume tower will make it less visible than the approved scheme.

"THe other changes are largely concerned with the relocation or removal of windows and doors, or the addition of louvres been confirmed that the louvres will have no impact on the acoustic performance of the building and, therefore, the approved acoustic report remains accurate and up to date.

"No new plant is proposed. THere is no change in the overall floorspace of the approved development.

"THere is nothing proposed by this application which would warrant a different conclusion being reached from the approval in January, 2017.

"THe description of the development will remain unchanged, and the commentary and conclusions reached by the council in approving the original main application in January, 2017, remain the same.

"THe end result remains a new swimming pool at the Butlin's resort Bognor Regis."

As reported, the pool should open to the public on April 5. It has been dubbed by the resort's director, Jeremy Pardey, as the best pool in Europe and a sign of the company's commitment to the town until 2050.

It will boast a claimed world first helter-skelter, a lido and a wave pool, as well as a large slide which is 12m high and 600m long.

Arun approved the pool just over two years ago. THe application concerned the demolition of the existing swimming pool building at the holiday site and the re-instatement of the vacated site as a landscaped area.

It also covered the demolition of staff and guest accommodation which totalled 1,005 beds, alterations to car parks and the installation of new pedestrian links.

A total of 27 conditions were imposed by Arun to control the appearance of the pool and a further five to a minor amendment the council approved last March.

New parking ban being sought by council in centre of village MOTORISTS could be banned from parking along some of Yapton's through road.

West Sussex County Council intends to paint double yellow lines along the south side of Main Road at its junction with Kings Close.

A statement by its director of law and assurance, Tony Kershaw, says: "A new residential property development has been built on land to the west of Kings Close, behind the Yapton Co-op store.

"When planning permission for this development was granted, it was specified that parking restrictions

should be introduced on Main Road, at the junction with Kings Close, to ensure parked cars did not restrict visibility for vehicles emerging from the junction.

"THe new order is, therefore, proposed to avoid danger to persons or traffic using the affected lengths of road and to facilitate the passage of traffic."

THe plans can be viewed at County Hall, Chichester, and Littlehampton Library in Maltravers Road.

Comments or objections about the proposed traffic regulation order should be made to the county council by March 14.

Officers said they wanted information about the location of Sacha Dixey.

Dixey, 41, pictured right, is wanted on recall to prison for breaching his licence.

He is described as white, 5ft 9in tall, of medium build, with light brown hair and brown eyes.

New stage for homes' legal bid f Some of the students involved collecting for 4Sight Vision Support MUSICAL theatre students will be taking audiences in Bognor Regis on a tuneful journey.

A 30-strong team of undergraduates will be staging and performing in the muscial, Copacabana, at the Regis Centre next month.

THeir shows will be taking place in its Alexandra THeatre from March 7-9 - and all the profits will go to 4Sight Vision Support.

THe Bognor Regis-based charity helps to make a positive difference to people in West Sussex who are living with sight loss through support, advice and training.

One of the students involved in the production, Bethany Stanley, said: "THe show consists of Barry Manilow's hits such as Sweet Heaven, Just Arrived and, of course, Copacabana.

"It follows an aspiring writer, Stephen,

whose imagination takes us to New York in the 40s where we meet an ambitious singer, Lola Lamar. We follow the love story of Tony and Lola."

Lola arrives in New York from Tulsa and is taken on at the famous Copacabana Nightclub and strives to become a 'Copa Girl dancer' with the help of the bartender.

"THe musical is going to involve students on the musical theatre and charity development courses and other musical theatre courses at the university, giving them the opportunity to perform and be involved with community fundraising for people across West Sussex," she said.

Of the students involved in the production, nine are working backstage, 11 are in the band and eight make up the production team.

THe students began their fundraising with a special day at Homebase in Chichester with a collection and ensemble performance.

4Sight Vision Support put on a sausage sizzle event at the same time selling hotdogs to customers.

"THe students sang a few musical theatre and pop songs to showcase their talent and brighten up the day for shoppers, creating a bubbly atmosphere while the weather was grey and drizzly," said Bethany.

"THey sang some of the show's songs to raise awareness of it and to start a conversation with customers."

THe event led to a spike in ticket sales at the theatre as well as raising £208.77.

Show times are 7.30pm on March 7, 8 and 9 and 2.30pm on March 9. Tickets are £14, £12 concessions and £8 students.

AN INITIAL legal attempt to stop housing in Pagham has been rejected.

Pagham Parish Council's request for a judicial review was turned down by a High Court judge.

But the council is seeking a second opinion at a verbal hearing in front of another judge at the High Court. THis is expected to take place in the spring.

THe concerns plans for up to 400 homes, a care home, a primary school and a site for a Scout hut on land south of Summer Lane and west of Pagham Road in Pagham.

Arun District Council gave planning approval to the proposals - one of four large-scale housing schemes backed for the area - last October.

But parish councillors have agreed to fight the proposal by developer Hanbury (PM) Ltd. THeir first application for a judicial review was heard by Mrs Justice Levine.

Arun's group head of planning, Neil Crowther, said: "THe judge considered whether there was a case worth pursuing or not.

"She has decided there was not a case to pursue at this time. But that is not the end of the matter.

"THe parish council can review

the judgement and go for an oral hearing and that is what they have decided to do.

"It will be an half an hour hearing in front of another judge to consider the case and see if that judge comes to a different decision and decides if there is a case to answer.

"We don't have a set date for the oral hearing yet, but I would expect it to be in four to six weeks."

Pagham Parish Council gave four grounds on which it believed the planning permission was flawed.

THey included the misleading of district councillors about the comments of Historic England when they made their decision, the failure to consider alternative sites which would have avoided significant effects on the wildlife special protection area around Pagham Harbour local nature reserve and the failure to understand two of Arun's planning policies.

If the judge in the oral hearing backs the parish council, a full judicial review will take place in the High Court.

Success for the parish council would see the planning permission invalidated.

` Appeal after death POLICE have confirmed a woman who was found in the sea near Bognor Regi Pier has died.

THey have named her as Bethany Skinner, 22, of Bognor Regis.

Officers have appealed for help in their investigation into why she was in the water after she spent last Saturday evening at Sheiks nightclub on the pier.

She was unresponsive when she was pulled from the sea by lifeboat and coastguard teams at 2.25am on Sunday and taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester. A man who went into the water to try to help her was also taken to hospital to be checked over. He was later released.

Detective Inspector Andy Westwood said: "Our investigation is at an early stage and we are trying to establish what happened.

"We want to hear from anyone who may have seen the woman going into the water near Bognor Pier.

"We know that she had been in Sheiks nightclub on the pier before she was found.

"Please contact us if you have any information which could help us."

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault in relation to an earlier incident on the pier and released under investigation.

Well all day work backed APPROVAL has been given for round the clock pumping at the oil site north of Bognor Regis.

Angus Energy's bid to extend the hours of operation of the energy source in Lidsey has received backing from West Sussex County Council.

Michael Elkington, the council's head of planning services, says in his report: "THe county planning authority has acted positively and proactively in determining this application by assessing the proposal against all material considerations, including planning policies and consultee responses, and subsequently determining to grant planning permission in accordance with the presumption in favour of sustainable development, as set out in the national planning policy framework."

Angus Energy said the extended drilling hours would help to maintain Britain's energy supply in uncertain times.

THe company was previously restricted to producing oil from the well under Sack Lane to 7.30am-6pm, six days a week.

Permission to drill exploratory boreholes there was originally granted in 1985 for another operator.

Most recently, Angus Energy was given permission by the county council to use the site until April 24, 2028. THe decision also allowed for a second well to be opened.

Mr Elkington's latest decision maintains the deadline and says all structures have to be removed by then or within six months of the date.

He has also kept the operating restriction on the site by banning all activities, except for pumping oil, outside the hours of 7.30am-6pm on weekdays and Saturdays.

"Apart from in emergencies, there shall be no working at any time on Sundays, bank or public holidays," he says.

"Such hours will also relate to any site restoration works."

He has also insisted on the two fire water tanks on the site being filled and maintained to an adequate standards.

THree letters of objection to the plans were received by the county council.

One of them was written by Stoughton resident Emily Mott. She told the county council that the Lidsey site's latest reported production of 13 barrels of oil a day in the year until last October was miniscule.

"Increasing production to 24/7 will not contribute significantly to the national energy supply," she said. "Even if numbers double, the amount of oil generated at the site is still insignificant."

Arun District Council raised no objection to the application. One of its planning officers, Simon Davis, says in his report: "It is not considered that the existing site results in any detrimental impacts on the countryside as it is well screened from nearby public viewpoints and is located at the end of a country track.

"It is considered that the site presents minimal impacts whilst having benefits in respect of oil production."

New A29 displays attract large turnouts of residents ANXIOUS residents have spoken out about their fears for a new route for the A29 to Westergate.

THe first three exhibitions about the multi-million pound link have been held this week. THe final display takes place from 11am-2pm tomorrow at St Philip Howard Catholic High School, in Elm Grove South, Barnham.

THe road's realignment will see a flyover built to take traffic above the railway line, instead of using the Woodgate level crossing, to speed up journeys and reduce air pollution in the area.

THe 4.34km stretch of highway is planned to start from the existing A29 Fontwell Avenue, north of Eastergate, and rejoin the A29 Lidsey Road, north of Shripney.

It forms an essential part of plans for thousands of homes around Westergate.

Crowds of people turned out for the initial exhibition about the A29 at Barnham Community Hall on Tuesday.

Among them was Barnham resident Chris Eldridge. He said: "THe traffic from the train gates is right back past the war memorial roundabout. It's terrible.

"You will just end up with another pinch point, although it's not gates, you have still got the roundabout, although it will not be as bad because it won't be at a standstill.

"It's just the housing. It will be a nightmare. Schools, doctors - none of them can cope at the moment.

"THey talk about a new surgery. THat's no good. THey can't get the doctors to fill them."

He said it was essential an off-road cycle route to St Philip Howard School was built

with the road to improve children's safety.

Andy Faulkner, of Yapton, said: "I don't think the new road will alleviate any of the congestion in the area.

"THere is only one housing site shown but, when this is all built, there will be another 3,000 homes I think, so that's going to generate a lot of traffic.

"THe roads will not be able to actually cope with the additional traffic when all the new houses are built unless something serious is done with the infrastructure."

Michael Warden, the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England's Arun district chairman, said: "I'm unhappy about where the new A29 starts and finishes.

"THey are taking it around in a big loop and taking the problem elsewhere. If we can do without it, the CPRE don't want all these big roads because they just encourage an urban sprawl."

Barnham resident Michael Davis said: "I am concerned about this. I think they should take a lot of consideration from the local communities to ensure the infrastructure required for the future developments is put in as well as the buildings themselves."

County councillor Derek Whittington (C, Fontwell) said: "THe road is going to happen but I know the parish councils in my division have worked really hard to get the best from it for our existing communities as well as looking ahead to the people who are going to come here in the future."

He added he wanted to ensure cycle routes were provided with the road.

Road's route challenge FOUR county councillors want the A29 plans to be re-considered.

Cllrs Michael Jones, Brian Quinn, Chris Oxlade and Brenda Smith have requested the road's realignment scheme is scrutinised to ensure the preferred route put forward is the best one.

Cllr Jones (Southgate) said he and his Labour colleagues believed the road's final route should be looked at by the environment community and fire select committee of the council.

He said the committee should ask for a commitment to be made to fully take into account the results of the current consultation before a scheme is agreed.

"We have several concerns about this decision as it currently stands and believe that scrutiny by the ECF select committee could help to address these, improve the decision-making and outcomes for residents," he said. "We are aware of significant public concern and, indeed, opposition to this concept and believe this needs member overview.

"It is not appropriate to agree a preferred route

prior to a consultation, nor even assume this should proceed without residents being given a meaningful opportunity to express their views beforehand."

THe costs of the scheme had risen by about 58 per cent to some ÂŁ54m, said Cllr Jones.

"While this is budgeted for in the capital programme, this is a very significant increase and the select committee should scrutinise the reasons for this to give assurance there won't be further significant increases in the cost of the scheme which the county council may be expected to meet.

"THe decision being taken is a wide-ranging decision to agree a preferred scheme, enter into funding agreements, agree the business case and to commence procurement.

"Yet the public consultation is only being launched as part of this decision too.

"Surely, the decision should not have been made to commence the scheme without the outcome of the consultation first being taken into account," he said.

His request will be considered by the council.

Michael Warden, chairman of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England's Arun district, said: "At the southern end, the new road should be started at the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' (relief road) roundabout.

"It's logical to start there and miss all of Shripney altogether.

"Instead, you're starting by the caravan park, so you'll have all the summer traffic from there and traffic coming down to Butlin's."

THe new road's northern end should also start further east to the next roundabout on the A27, he said, to avoid the traffic from the Fontwell area.

Information from the county council at its exhibitions about the proposal states the route, east of the existing road, was the best of three put forward.

"THis is principally because it avoids introducing traffic north of Lidsey bends, where there are road safety concerns and avoids the need for an additional crossing over the watercourse," it says.

"It also provides access to land in the southern section of the strategic site allocation that has potential for development.

"THe appraisal found this route is likely to be beneficial to the economy, likely to have a neutral impact on the environment but a beneficial impact on air quality and likely to have a beneficial social impact."

FAMILY fun and free activities will be on offer at a health event in Felpham tomorrow.

THe Regis BIG Event is being staged by the health service to provide a mass of information about health and care services in the Bognor Regis area.

It will take place from 10.30am-3.30pm at the Arun Leisure Centre off Felpham Way and is being held by the Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group with Regis Local Community Network.

Taster sessions and activities include free NHS health checks, mindfulness,

yoga and t'ai chi and fitness activities.

All ages will be welcome to attend.

Free soft play and storytelling for children will take place.

THose who attend will be able to claim a free swim voucher valid until March 31.

A commissioning group spokesman said: "Come and find out what is happening in your local area helping keep you healthy, stay well and feeling good. Tell us where health and care services are working well and what needs to change."

Free transport is available from surgeries in the Bognor Regis area.

Survey launched to discover views about Felpham's future A FIRST review is underway of a masterplan for Felpham.

THe area's neighbourhood plan was approved in July, 2014, by residents.

THis means the time has come for Felpham Parish Council to review and update the plan - which governs development - to tie in with the Arun District Council local plan which was adopted last July.

Parish council chairman Dave Smart said: "We really want to hear from residents about the changes we are

proposing to the neighbourhood plan.

Please get involved and have your say."

THe parish council has compiled a survey for them to get their support for the revised plan and to make suggestions about further planning policies they would like to see.

THe survey runs until March 31 and can be found online at: felphampc.gov/ NP or by collecting a paper copy from the parish office in Meaden Way or by asking any parish councillor for a copy.

"I've been involved, and given support, to many campaigns over the years, including saving the town hall from demolition and marching to save our hospital, to name a couple, and - of course - supporting local residents on various issues.

"Serving Bognor Regis as town mayor was an honour in 2013-14 and was an opportunity to meet so many people in our great community."

Cllr Paul Wells has announced he will not be seeking another four-year term in the local government elections in May. Cllr Wells is a Liberal Democrat councillor for Hotham ward on Arun District Council.

He has also served as one of the party's members on Bognor Regis Town Council.

He said: "After 18 years of serving on local councils and representing the community I've decided not to stand in the forthcoming elections.

THe parish council got a long way with work on the plan, a few years ago, but it got delayed because of concerns about the level of protection needed for the Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

Mr Collins will use much of the earlier evidence to avoid duplicating that work.

THe plan will also seek to avoid placing any more housing allocations around the parish. But it will put the parish council in a stronger position to talk to Arun about any further housing schemes that are put forward.

THe first draft will be followed by a six-week consultation. THis will lead to another draft, which will be examined by a planning inspector to ensure it is valid.

THe resulting document will be put to a referendum of residents. A majority vote in favour will see it adopted by Arun.

A CHANCE for Pagham's residents to speak up for their area is set to take place this autumn.

THe parish council is moving ahead with its much-delayed proposals for a neighbourhood plan.

THese plans give communities the ability to shape developments in their area. THey are a mixture of factual evidence and opinions of those who live there.

THey do not stop major developments, such as those backed in principle for Pagham by Arun District Council, but they can shape details of the new estates as they go through the final stages of the planning process.

Nicola Swann, Pagham Parish Council's clerk, said it was hoped the neighbourhood plan could take effect this autumn.

"Paul Collins (the council's planning consultant) feels it's important we crack on with this and get on with the consultation for the neighbourhood plan as soon as we can.

Army Cadets from fifties are wanted FORMER Army Cadet John Mace is keen to meet up with his former Bognor Regis comrades.

Mr Mace came across an old photograph of hs fellow cadets and is curious to find out how they have fared in the past 60 years.

He said: "I know there are two of us - Tim Young and myself - still in Bognor Regis.

But I don't know about the others."

THe black and white photograph shows the ten cadets at one of their annual camps in the early 1950s.

"I think they were held in Kent and we used to fight against others. THe year the photo was taken we won a lot of trophies," he said.

He has identified the other cadets as: Back row, l-r: Alan Burford, Alan Fisk, John Mace, Paul Growcot, Jim Young and Terry Miller and front row, l-r: Peter Simons, Brian Rainer, Alan THomas and John Green.

THe cadets met at a drill hall complete with rifle range in Bedford Street, which was one of several large buildings behind the current Wilko.

Mr Mace, 83, of Markfield, North Bersted, attended the Lyon Street and Westloats Lane schools before he became an apprentice with Seymours builders for about three years. He signed up for three years in the Army and served as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. He left to become a plumber for the rest of his working life.

Mr Mace found the photo when a granddaughter asked him to find a snap of her with his other grand-daughter when they were younger.

A SPINE-TINGLING rendition of a classic religious song delighted congregation members at an annual service in Bognor Regis.

Singers from THe Chamber Choir of the University of Chichester performed the 1638 setting of Psalm 51 originally written

by Gregorio Allegri at the event.

It was hosted by the town mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, as one of the highlights of his year in office.

Cllr Reynolds said: "THe service brings together civic leaders from our local community.

"It was stunning to hear the university singers who were present singing the psalm in Latin. It was a real goosebump moment.

"THe singers' abilities and the acoustics of St Wilfrid's Church - where the service was held - made for an amazing experience."

By contrast, the next musical feature in the service was the joyful hymn, He's Got THe Whole World in His Hands, by the children of Nyewood CoE Infant School in the town.

Some 100 guests attended the service on Sunday. THey included the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Caroline Nicholls, as well as the mayors of Littlehampton, Arundel and Chichester and Arun District Council's chairman.

THe service also featured an outline of the work of Arun Angels, Cllr Reynold's charity of the year.

Trust's flats are stepping stone for life A UNIQUE scheme in Bognor Regis is helping young people with learning disabilities to stand on their own feet.

THe transition service by Aldingbourne Trust is believed to be the only one in the county.

It has put making choices at the centre of its residents’ lives – just as they are for everyone else.

Laura Coventry, the service’s team leader, said: “THe people we are helping need to be responsible for themselves.

“I am sure they don’t want to be relying on other people to do things for them.

THey want to be as independent as they possibly can be. THey want to be able to do things and say ‘it’s my life'."

One of the first residents to move into a one-bedroom flat in the property was Nathan Joyce, 21.

Nathan, who has autism, said: “I enjoy living here. I like my own space. It’s nice to have some room for myself.

“I would like to become a little bit more independent. At some point, I may have a girlfriend.”

Nathan combines living in the property in York Road with his studies as a media level two student at Chichester College.

His subjects include computing and film-making. He hopes to move on to study animation after his current year-long course.

THe service has reached its six month anniversary. It was established in former solicitors’ offices which occupied the building’s upper floors for decades.

THere are nine one-bedroom flats and one with two bedrooms. All are furnished.

THe scheme has nine residents and another lives in a neighbouring property.

Also based at the premises are senior support worker Lauren Richardson and Dave Wyatt.

Dave, the transition service’s manager, said: “THere is nothing else like this in the area. Before, people with autism, Down syndrome and learning disabilities who left care or had been leaving with families, had to move out of the county.

“THey were a long way from their families and they had to break the connections they had with the local community. THis service was set up with Chichester College to provide a place transition for young people with learning difficulties in their area."

THe residents have to attend college, or

have been accepted on to a course, and they can stay for up to three years.

THey will be expected to move to properties which lack the overnight support available with the transition service as another step on their road to independence.

Laura said: “THey could have support for just one hour a day or three days a week at another property.

“When they are here, we will show them life skills like cooking and cleaning and talk about situations such as friendships, social events and sex education with Chichester College.

“We can also let them go out if we have assessed the situation as being safe for them.

“Each month, we look at the skills the young people have gained and look at how they can make further progress.”

Other subjects in the programme include managing money, making the best use of time and travel.

“THey can stay up late watching TV if they want,” added Laura, “but they will then discover it can make you late for college the next morning.”

Courses being studied by residents also include performing arts, theatre and English and maths.

Last Saturday's event at its Aldingbourne Country Centre is thought to have raised £2,500 for its work with adults with learning difficulties.

THe embers were glowing red hot, with an estimated temperature of some 1,200degC, when the walkers stepped out into the night in front of friends and colleagues.

Clive Owen, the trust's head of finance, was among those who tested themselves on the fire.

He said: "Lining up to start was quite nerve-wracking. Would my feet get

burnt to a crisp and I come out on blackened stumps?

"Fortunately, the organiser went first and seemed to be OK. "Once I began walking, I didn't feel a thing. THe key is to keep moving and don't stop in the middle for a photo."

Stephanie makes point on TV A TRANSGENDER woman from Bognor Regis hopes her forthcoming TV appearance will encourage others who question their sexuality.

THe episode of the BBC One quiz show, Pointless, in which Stephanie Collins is a contestant is due to be screened soon.

She teamed up with her friend, Pearl Streadich, from Esher, for the popular show in which entrants have to guess the most obscure answer to simple questions.

THe episode was first broadcast about three years ago around the time Miss Collins moved to the town.

She said: "THe programme team looked after me like a princess. THe presenters, Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, were absolute gentlemen. It was a fun experience and they made me feel relaxed.

"THe show is made as you see it on TV but, if someone makes a particularly funny remark, the director will halt the filming and ask for that comment to be repeated to ensure it is polished up before it is broadcast.

"I'm not sure I like seeing myself on TV. But I absolutely used to hate looking in the mirror when I was a man.

"I have two photographs of myself, one as a man and the other as a woman. I can see my eyes have come alive in the second one.

THat's when I realised the decision I made was the right one."

She said she hoped anyone who saw her on TV and felt the same as she did would realise an answer existed to their situation.

Miss Collins, 63, of Gravits Lane, was born a male and originally named Stephen. She ran a garage for many years and was also an auxiliary in the RAF for much of that time.

She served in the conflicts in Kosovo and Kuwait in the dangerous role of the Mobile Armed Movements Squadron. Its members

cleared the landing spots for helicopters to land and offloaded their cargo, which they distributed.

She said: "I had a 48ins chest, 20ins neck and arms like Popeye. I like my body much more now. I still think I'm too angular, though.

"I'd love some more of the curves that women have, even though they often want to get rid of them."

She has believed herself to be a female for much of her life and has considered herself as transgender for ten years.

To be able to leave her male body behind, Miss Collins began with GP appointments, moved on to psyschiatric assessments and then surgery.

She also has all the official paperwork to be recognised in law as a woman after a procedure.

It included filling in a 72-page document and appearing before a tribunal to show she was living as a woman in her former home town of Walton-on-THames in Surrey.

"It took me longer to achieve than necessary because I didn't know what I was doing and I was scared," she said.

"I was very nervous about the situation.

But I want people like me to know it is not as difficult a process as they might think."

Miss Collins has four grown-up children and a grand-daughter as well as Hazel, her 16-year-old dwarf dachshund, and has lately been working as a cleaner.

She gained national attention in 2011 with a complaint against Sainsbury's for being told to use disabled toilets.

THe publicity led to a role in the play, Lily, in the Camden Fringe arts festival a story adapted for the film, THe Danish Girl. THis prompted appearances on radio stations and TV chat shows and a feature in Chat magazine.

Guests have a ball and raise charity funds

level of the hall, was originally used as a magistrates court and is now the meeting place for Arundel Town Council. Guests joined in a ‘waltz’ choreographed by student Jasmine Song and enjoyed jazz music with head of jazz, Nick Reynolds, from the University of Chichester.

Cllr Ashworth continued: "It was so moving and poignant to hear her story, and guests had a greater appreciation of the difference raising funds make to the lives of local children who are coping with the day to day challenging of a life threatening or terminal illness.

"Guests fully embraced the masquerade theme and had a chance to dance the waltz which would have been reminiscent of years gone by with many balls at Arundel Town Hall.

"It really is a superb party venue steeped in history."

WESTBOURNE HOUSE is inviting entrants to a Secret Art Exhibition, which will be on display at the school from March 23 to 29.

THe school is encouraging artists, from enthusiastic amateurs of any age to professional artists, to contribute an A6 postcard-sized entry in any medium based on the theme of ‘colour’ by March 14.

All art is sold anonymously so buyers don't know who created their artwork until after they buy it.

THe majority of artworks will be sold for £5 and just 20 pieces will be selected for a silent auction.

Morale is low in police force ALMOST 90 per cent of Sussex Police officers who responded to a Police Federation survey said morale within the force was low.

Almost four out of five have faced mental wellbeing issues such as anxiety over the last 12 months.

THe federation, one of the largest staff associations in the UK, represents more than 119,000 constables, sergeants and inspectors and has been running for 100 years.

Its survey revealed that three-quarters of Sussex staff said their workload was too high or much too high, while four out of five said there were not enough officers to do the job properly.

THose views were certainly reflected in the number of staff, officers and PCSOs employed by Sussex Police.

At a meeting with Adur and Worthing councillors earlier this month, Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said there were 5,102 full-time equivalent staff on the books at the end of March, 2013, and 4,526 at the end of 2017/18.

She added that some 150 staff left the force every year. Work is in place to address the issue, with more than 200 recruitments since last April and plans for up to 800 by 2022.

THe pressures placed on current staff came through loud and clear in the survey, with sizeable rises in the percentage saying they were pressured to work long hours, and faced unrealistic time pressures and deadlines.

When it came to staff’s mental wellbeing, Sussex Police scored below the national average in almost all areas, with 19 per cent reporting that they had suffered one or more injuries as a result of work-related violence in the last year.

Almost two-thirds said they rarely or never felt relaxed, while just over one-third said they rarely or never felt optimistic about the future.

Assistant chief constable Nick May said: “As an organisation, we are aware how demanding a role in the police force can be and our officers are frequently asked to put themselves in situations that most people would shy away from.

“We, like many others working in blue light services, are very good at caring for others but have, in the past, forgotten to care for our own staff in the way we should.

“In recent years, we have introduced a significant number of schemes and support mechanisms so our officers and staff can get the support and guidance they need.

“THese include a mental health advocacy scheme, the creation of a dedicated mobile application for officers and staff support roles, as well as committing to the Blue Light Pledge.”

Looking at the national picture, Ché Donald, the federation’s national vicechairman, said the results should be ‘a huge red flag to the government, chief constables and the public’.

County council spend thousands on own newspaper for residents THE county council, which has to find tens of thousands of pounds in savings over the next four years, has been paying £32,500 to have its own newspaper delivered to residents.

Connections, which also costs the council £34,000 to print, is delivered twice a year to around 383,000 homes.

While the council said that advertising cut those costs to 10p per household, that still leaves a bill of more than £38,000 to pay.

Cllr Bob Smytherman said: "On the principle of the magazine, I strongly feel that, at a time of significant cuts to council services and the increase in council taxes, it feels very wrong to include these financial challenges on a glossy council magazine sent to every home."

Cllr Smytherman, who previously described Connections as ‘a propaganda tool’, welcomed news that some of the cost was recovered through advertising.

But he added: "It does beg the question

whether a public body such as a council should receive money from a commercial partner to subside a publication to promote public services."

THe money to pay for printing and delivery of Connections comes from the corporate communications budget, with one part-time member of staff charged with editing and collecting its content.

It is designed by the council’s in-house graphics team.

A council spokesman said: "We have a duty to communicate with residents and are constantly reviewing the best ways to do this.

"Connections contains helpful and important information for residents on the wide range of services provided by the county council and its partners, and reaches audiences who may not be accessing digital or online information.”

` Night of dance POLE fitness students are holding a special evening of dance tomorrow (Saturday) to raise money for charity.

Organised by instructor and licence holder, Sue THompson, of Pole Passion, the show is raising money for Village Friends.

An evening of pole, aerial hoop and chair dance performances will be showcased from instructors and students who train at Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Chichester classes.

All proceeds from the event, held at Bersted Park Community Centre, from 6pm to 9pm, will go to Village Friends - a good neighbour scheme in the six villages area to help befriend elderly people who are isolated and would benefit from a regular chat each week.

THere will be stalls, refreshments and a raffle with a variety of prizes including Picturedrome cinema vouchers, day passes at Dream Fitness in Selsey and Bognor Regis and a voucher for the Black Rabbit at Arundel.

City marking 75 years since the great escape

A walk to remember a loved one, a walk for fun with family and friends and a walk to show you care will take place on Saturday, May 11.

Starting at Westgate Leisure Centre, those participating can take a five or ten-mile route which includes the specially lit Bishops Palace Gardens.

Anne Emery is just one walker set to take the walk again.

She said: "I’ve always had a lovely evening. Lovely weather, lovely walk, lovely company, and everyone’s so friendly.

"We walk for the various friends we’ve lost who’ve been at the hospice

– it’s a marvellous place."

kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CELEBRATIONS are being put in place to commemorate 75 years since the great escape with New Park Cinema, Chichester, showing a gala screening with the historian Dan Snow on March 24.

On the night of March 24-25, 1944, a massed escape took place from a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany and not many people know a local connection with this famous escape is an RAF officer, Roger Bushell.

In 1930, Bushell was invited to join, as a pilot, No 601 Auxiliary Squadron, known as the millionaire’s squadron due to their considerable wealth.

After war was declared, he flew with No 601 until October 10, 1939, when he was promoted to squadron leader and posted to RAF Tangmere to reform No 92 Squadron. THe squadron was equipped with Bristol Blenheim 1F night fighters and as its commanding officer, Bushell was the first auxiliary officer to take up such a post. THe squadron moved to Croydon in December, 1939, and converted three months later to Spitfire Mk1 aircraft.

On May 23, at the time of Dunkirk, the squadron carried out its first sorties over northern France but on its second sortie of the day, Bushell was shot down by a Bf 110 German fighter aircraft. Fortunately, he managed to force-land in a field near Boulogne but was captured by advancing German troops.

He was held initially at Dulag Luft, near Frankfurt, a Luftwaffe interrogation centre, but managed to escape a few weeks later. He reached the German/ Swiss border but was recaptured before he was able to enter neutral Switzerland.

Four months later, he escaped from a prisoner of war camp and reached Prague with a Czech RAF pilot. Here he was hidden from the Germans for six months until he was captured again on May 19, 1942. His Czech lover and her family were later executed and Bushell was suspected by the Gestapo of involvement in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. He was fortunate not to be executed but was sent, after interrogation by the Gestapo in Berlin, to Stalag Luft 111, a prisoner of war camp for Allied air force officers in Lower Silesia, now Poland.

As ‘Big X’, Bushell took over the escape committee – the X organisation, responsible for all aspects of the camp’s escape plan to get 200 prisoners out in one night. THree tunnels, named ‘Tom’, ‘Dick’ and ‘Harry’ were dug but in September, 1943, ‘Tom’ was discovered by the German guards. Work was concentrated on the completion of ‘Harry’ and on the night of March 24-25, 1944, 76 prisoners, including Bushell, escaped.

Roger Bushell was captured two days later some 500 miles from the camp.

On March 29, on Hitler’s orders, he was shot dead by the Gestapo. Only three of the escapees made their way back to the

UK but 49 recaptured others were, like Bushell, murdered by the Gestapo.

THe escape from Stalag Luft 111 was the inspiration for the film THe Great Escape in which actor Richard Attenborough’s character, Roger Bartlett, was based on Roger Bushell, the real ‘Big X’.

Inspiring talks will help to show women their abilities INSPIRATIONAL women will be using their experiences to benefit others in Bognor Regis.

A line-up of speakers will celebrate this year's staging of international women's day by My Sisters' House Arun and Chichester women's charity.

THe event is taking place from 11am-4pm on March 8 at THe Phoenix Centre on THe Regis School's campus off Westloats Lane.

My Sisters' House founder Julie Budge said: "THe event is all about celebrating women's achievements.

"We wanted to invite a range of women to pass on their experiences to inspire other women. THe women we support, as they develop and grow, and as part of our work with them, we would like them to take part in more decision-making and have the confidence and courage to do that."

THe first speaker of the day will be author Helen Rebello from 11.30am-12.15pm.

She will be speaking about her book, THe Magical Unfolding, and her experiences with domestic violence.

She will be followed from 1pm-1.30pm by

businesswoman Kelly Grant on the subject of Grant Your Wishes. THe final speaker, and the youngest, will be Ellie Roberts, who chairs West Sussex County Council's youth cabinet, from 3pm-3.30pm.

THe event will open with a showcase

by My Sisters' House, based in London Road, of its work during its three years. In between the speakers, at 1.30pm, will be a community tea party and the chance to have some fun. Helen Rebello has donated signed copies of her book for the first 50 women who go along.

SPRING has already sprung to provide an early sight of a life-saving campaign around Bognor Regis.

THousands of crocuses planted by volunteers to highlight the Purple4Polio campaign by the town's Rotary clubs have begun to brighten up a variety of open spaces.

THey include Hotham Park and Rectory Gardens in Felpham. Longbrook in Felpham and Gloucester Road in Bognor Regis are also among the sites which have benefited from the planting.

"THe Purple4Polio initiative is one launched by Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland to raise funds and awareness

for our efforts to eradicate polio across the world and promote the work of our global campaign, End Polio Now. "Rotary's pledge for a polio-free world was made in 1985 when there were 125 polio endemic countries and hundreds of new cases every single day.

"In 2017, there were only 22 cases in the entire world but, as long as there is one single case anywhere, children everywhere are at risk.

"To finish the job, over two billion doses of oral polio vaccine have to be administered each and every year in over 60 countries until the world is finally certified polio-free."

Rotary is supported in its goal by several global agencies, like the World Health Organisation.

Paul first came to national and international fame in the 1960s, having hits with rock band Manfred Mann after refusing an offer by Keith Richards to front what turned out to be THe Rolling Stones. THen, he went solo and had success on stage and as a television and radio presenter.

But, all along, the blues were important to him and, in 1979, he got together with Tom McGuiness, also formerly in Manfred Mann, to create THe Blues Band 'for a bit of fun and some beer money' and, as they say, the rest is history. Joined by Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher, the band is still playing, writing, touring and recording.

Absurdist genius Milton Jones, one of the finest female comics at work, Jo Caulfield, and Ivo Graham, with his crafty, self-aware wit, will open the festival on Friday March 1.

A host of stars from Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week and more will take to the Guildhall stage the following day, Saturday, March 2, to present ‘Best of the Fringe’ sessions and Men Behaving Badly’s Neil Morrissey and star of Cold Feet John THomson will star in question and answer sessions, hosted by Plusnet’s Craig Murray.

THe following weekend will include further fun with a comedy drama on March 7 and the best of the UK’s hottest new acts in a festival finale on March 8.

THis recipe for success keeps audiences returning time and again, although occasionally there is some disappointment from confused Manfred fans who expect to hear pop songs, but Paul said the blues will never go away.

"Blues are now an established aspect of the wider music scene. THey never went away."

Forty years on, THe Blues Band is now regarded as having some of the finest exponents of the blues tradition so whether you're only just discovering the genre or have been a lifelong fan, you're in for a treat on March 2.

WHAT'SinONSussex Copacabana AFTER the success of Nunsense, Chichester University students are throwing off their habits and sliding on feather headpieces to return to the Alexanadra THeatre to present Barry Manilow's new musical, Copacabana.

Full of showgirls and tantalising rhythms, this show at the Regis Centre, will be a great ‘night on the town’, presented by students on the musical theatre and arts development course combined with those studying musical theatre joint honours students.

THe story follows aspiring songwriter, Stephen.

His imagination takes him back to the

1940s as he creates a story surrounding an ambitious young singer, Lola Lamar, who arrives in New York City from Tulsa hoping to become a star.

She lands a position at the famous Copacabana Nightclub, "the hottest club north of Havana" and strives to become a 'Copa Girl' dancer with the help of the bartender, Tony Forte.

Music is by Barry Manilow with lyrics by Bruce Sussman and Jack Feldman and the book was written by the three of them.

Young French composer Louis-Hector Berlioz’s homage to Byron's work Childe Harold's Pilgrimage came in the form of a great orchestral masterpiece, Harold in Italy, which will be one of the works in Worthing Symphony Orchestra's next concert.

Berlioz’s friend, violin virtuoso Nicolo Paganini, lamented he had ‘no suitable music’ for his new viola and Berlioz composed an orchestral work which showcased the instrument. It will be performed by celebrated viola player Sarah-Jane Bradley, making her Worthing debut with WSO. A former student of the Royal Academy of Music and the Mozarteum, Salzburg, SarahJane has gone on to a hugely successful international concert and recording career.

She is a passionate advocate of the viola and has premiered many works.

A YOUNG prizewinning violinist, Emmanuel Bach, is the performer at the next meeting of Bognor Regis Music Club at.

He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at London venues including Wigmore Hall, St Martin-in-theFields and St James’s Piccadilly. He was a prizewinner at the 2017 Royal Overseas League String Competition, and Mirecourt International Violin Competition 2016.

He will be accompanied by collaborative pianist Jennifer Hughes, who has performed across Europe and has

broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

THeir programme will comprise J S Bach's Solo Sonata No.2 in A minor, Beethoven's Sonata No.8 in G, Op.30 No.3, Sonata for Violin and Piano FP118 by Poulenc, AltWien (arr. Heifetz) by Godowsky, two works by Kreisler, Liebesleid and La Gitana, and finally Ysaye's Caprice d’après L’Etude en forme de Valse, de Saint-Saëns.

Sarah-Jane will also play William Alwyn’s pensive Pastorial Fantasia for viola and strings.

Alwyn was a champion of the viola and wrote several works especially for it.

Pastoral Fantasia, written in the early years of the Second World War, ranks alongside THe Lark Ascending and On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring for its delicate evocation of the English countryside.

THe March concert also includes Chabrier's Joyeuse March, the delicate favourite Clair de Lune by Debussy, with Bizet’s L’Arlesienne – Suite No. 1, concluding a wonderful spring concert from the professional orchestra of West Sussex.

THe ‘King for a day’ project came out of Atila’s long running residency at the Park Plaza Hotel and the Arts Club in Dover Street, London, and an album supports Atila’s current touring show of the same name.

NAMED Sony World Photographer of the Year 2018, Alys Tomlinson is an award-winning editorial and fine art photographer based in London, whose work has been exhibited in the UK, France, Ireland and the USA. THe 'Ex-Voto' exhibition is a study of offerings of religious devotion found at Christian pilgrimage sites across the world and is an extension of her previous work in Lourdes.

She said: "Still intrigued by this place of great spiritual contemplation and worship, I re-visited the project with a different approach. Shooting in large format black and white slowed the process down and gave me space to think.

"Using anthropological experience gained during my MA, I became interested in the markers left behind at pilgrimage sites. Mother's Day Treat at Denmans Garden Oasis of calm all year round WHEN the gardeners at Denmans Gardens finished planting 8,000 bulbs last autumn, their only reward was putting away their bulb planters and trowels.

THe spring-like weather this week, however, has brought forward their real reward as pale yellow, white, and lavender crocuses have begun to bloom blending with the other crocus, snowdrops, and winter aconites that have naturalized at Denmans. Recounting the site’s history, which was part of an estate owned by Lord Denmans in the late-1800’s before being requisitioned by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn van Paasschen, chairman of the JohnBrookes Denmans Foundation, said that Joyce and her husband grew vegetables and cut-flowers at Denmans for the market in Covent Garden. Joyce later converted it to a unique ornamental garden which John Brookes redesigned during his 35+ years at Denmans.

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

Work on renovating structures in the intimate contemporary garden is well under way and other renovations are on the calendar. THe past year’s pruning and replanting is

evident everywhere. Gwendolyn said that “visitors are consistently impressed which is encouraging.”

With three full-time gardeners, Gwendolyn

praised her “amazing” team for their hard work and the creation of a happy atmosphere to which regular visitors return time and again.

Awards are well deserved for Indian fine dining restaurant

AWARD-WINNING restaurants don't always live up to their reputation but one which does is Cardamom Bay. When my husband and I visited on a Wednesday evening, it was a good sign that a number of the tables were occupied by a range of customers - other couples, a family party and friends having a get-together - in the smart, comfortable, dining area with starched white linen cloths and friendly, attentive staff.

Straight away, we were offered drinks - we chose Cobra beer and a lemonade and poppadums while trying to choose from the extensive menu. THe light and crisp poppadums were not in the least oily and were accompanied with a mixed pickle, mango chutney, minted plain yoghurt and finely sliced onion.

Sharing a starter of lamb samosas, also available as a vegetarian option, we found these were well filled and meaty with just a slight kick to alert the taste buds ready for mains.

Although eight varieties of classics, such as Madras curry, are listed plus other curries, biryani and tandoori, the house specials looked the most interesting mains. My husband opted for the fish special grill while I went for the Jal Jal balti, which comprised succulent chicken breast cooked in a sauce with red peppers and tomatoes.

With salmon, sea bass and king prawns marinated in a yoghurt thick sauce, cooked in a Tandoori clay oven and served with salad, the fish grill was a generous and tasty plateful but we supplemented it with special fried rice and traditional sag aloo of potatoes and spinach.

Although we were far too full from the previous two courses, we couldn't resist iced desserts of a mango-flavour kulfi and a caramel ice cream.

It all added up to a satisfying, good value meal with flavours of the East in modern plush surroundings, justifying its reputation as one of the most popular Indian restaurants in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area.

Lal Hussain, who runs the restaurant with his brothers, says the basis for its continuing popularity is his passion for life through cooking.

"Over 30 years, I worked my way through the business from Bus Boy to chef. My view of the world as a chef led to me opening Cardamom Bay.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Monday, March 4 - For the first time since February 16, a bulletin was issued from Craigweil House last night. THe report of the physicians was in the following terms: 8.15pm - During the last fortnight his Majesty the King has made satisfactory progress. Weight and strength have increased and sleep is refreshing.

His Majesty is now able to read and apply his mind for short periods of time. We must, however, recall that one of the most anxious features of his Majesty's grave illness was severe exhaustion due to prolonged toxaemia.

For this reason, careful avoidance of any sustained effort of mind and body will be necessary for a lengthened period in order to ensure that completeness of recovery which, although still some months distant, we confidently anticipate. Yesterday, there was less sunshine, but the weather was again pleasant.

FOOTBALL fans around Bognor Regis have vowed to keep their eyes on the prize to help raise money for a children's hospice.

Supporters of Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea will face each other next month to boost the coffers of Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

THey will take each other on at Pagham FC's Nyetimber Lane ground - and the prize for the winning side is a stunning piece of silverware provided by Bognor Regis hair salon Lotus Styling.

Owners Daren and Kate Terry, pictured above, have donated the Lotus Styling Cup, which is up for grabs at the match, which takes place on April 21.

Daren said: "We're delighted to put up the cup to give the winning team something to hold aloft in a match that is for such a deserving cause. It should be a great day and, having been involved in previous matches, we know just how competitive it will be. Good luck to both sides."

Chestnut Tree House is a children's charity which provides hospice care services near Arundel and community support for children and young people with progressive life-shortening conditions throughout East and West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and south east Hampshire.

Kate knows all about raising funds for the charity. She said: "THe salon helped raise £7,500 for Chestnut Tree House, which is the amount needed for just one day's care.

"We wish the match all the success in the world and hope they raise as much money as possible."

Long-standing Pagham FC committee member and former winger Ray Nunn, a Chelsea season ticket holder, says he expects a close match - but that the hospice will be the real winner.

He added: "Here at Pagham we are thrilled to be able to host the match and help raise money for Chestnut Tree House.

"We are a community club and this is all about making a difference withn our community."

A FAVOURITE weekend for all the family is to return in Bognor Regis this year.

Hotham Park Country Fair, pictured above, will be back on August 3 and 4 for the 18th year.

Organisers at the Hotham Park Heritage Trust - with help from Bognor Regis Rotary Club - have been busy putting together a packed programme of activities and attractions to ensure the Saturday and Sunday continue to attract thousands of visitors.

Trust chairman Anne Cranham said: "THe fair offers the chance to enjoy a fun and relaxing day, with something to keep all members of the family entertained from music and singers on the bandstand to Punch and Judy by the pavilion - and everything in between.

"THe traditional marquee will be back on the lawn, filled with friendly stallholders selling their arts and crafts.

"As people walk through the park, they will see lots more stalls, offering a wide

GIRL GUIDES around Bognor Regis were among those who used a worldwide celebration to help young children in the area.

THe Guides, who included those from Barnham, marked this year's World THinking Day to support Chestnut Tree House children's hospice's Pay for a Day campaign.

THis saw them paying the £6,850 it cost for the hospice's services on the latest thinking day of February 22.

A group of representatives from Girlguiding West Sussex visited the hospice near Arundel the previous day to receive their Pay for a Day campaign.

THey included County Commissioner Amanda Teasel and Assistant Division Commissioner Adur Valley, Carol Yeend.

THey were joined by members of Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, as well as Chestnut Tree House's fundraising team and the charity's interim chief executive, Rosemarie Finley.

Caroline Roberts-Quigley, the commuity fundraiser at the hospice, said: "We are delighted at Girlguiding West Sussex are so engaged with our festive fundraising campaign.

"It is especially poignant that they have chosen to Pay for a Day on World THinking Day, when Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world are speaking about the issues they care about.

We look forward to working with them for many years to come."

THe relationship between girlguiding in the county and the hospice began in 2015. Ms Yeend, Guide Leader of Shoreham, Southwick and Kingston Buci Girlguiding district, suggested holding a sponsored walk for the charity's annual reindeer run fundraising initiative.

THe first reindeer ramble raised £432 and this increased to just over £2,000 the following year.

THese achievements led to the creation of a specific reindeer ramble badge for the Adur Valley division in 2017 and £2,253 was raised.

THe second reindeer ramble badge was produced last year and resulted in £22,500 being raised by seven divisions within Girlguiding West Sussex, including Barnham, pictured below.

"We feel honoured that there is a dedicated reindeer ramble badge and would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for raising so much money," said Ms Roberts-Quigley.

Chestnut Tree House provides specialist palliative care services to 300 children and young people to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions and their families.

COMMUNITY projects around Bognor Regis are being given the chance to bag their share of £100,000.

Leading retailer Tesco is celebrating its centenary by holding two special rounds of its Bags for Help scheme.

Bags of Help, run in partnership with Groundworks, sees funding awarded to thousands of community projects each year.

In Bognor Regis, it has awarded £70,767 to 28 schemes to benefit their members and residents.

Alec Brown, Tesco's head of community, said: "In 2019, we are celebrating a century of delivering great value for our customers.

"And what better way to celebrate this occasion than by using our flagship community grants scheme, Bags of Help, to support even more groups and organisations who are helping to make a difference across Britain."

THe first of the special rounds will be held this August and September and will concentrate on groups which deliver health and wellbeing benefits, with a particular focus on those which are tackling cancer, heart disease and diabetes, in line with Tesco's national health partnership.

Applications for the funding rounds are open to all community projects which bring benefits across a region. Tesco colleagues will be involved in shortlisting three applications in each area.

Customers will be invited to vote for which group they would like to receive grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000 using blue tokens handed out at checkouts. THe second round will be in November.

We have been sitting in the garden for breakfast for the last few mornings and it’s been totally wonderful. I can’t believe we are only at the end of February, beginning of March, and we are experiencing weather like this!

Long may it continue so we can all get back in the water kayaking and paddle boarding! I am not a winter water person, but as soon as the sun is out, I am ready to go!

While running this morning, I had to strip off to a t-shirt and shorts. We have been fully covered in long leggings, running jackets and gloves for the past few months, so to let the sunshine onto

our skin was a massive treat.

Now it’s time to think about how to make the skin as gorgeous as possible in order to strip the layers off and exposes some flesh over the coming months. THe best things to do is to prepare from the inside out. In other words, cleanse the body, eat the right foods and the skin will look after itself.

THe ideal way to give it a boost is to add some skin-enhancing foods into your daily regime and cut out all the junk.

THat means processed foods, chocolate, meats, crisps, wine and dairy. THere are so many words branded around about detoxing and cleansing, but what exactly does this mean?

Picture perfect views of town from the past Instant photographs provide chance to see the Bognor Regis of more than a century ago EACH week we look at images of the town and expect them to depict an era, event etc, but we tend to look no deeper than this. Over the years, ‘image taking’ has changed dramatically.

Photography as we understand it in this country today can be traced back to the earliest surviving photograph which had a paper negative, dated 1835. THe photograph is of a leaded window in a Wiltshire building, which was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot.

Eventually, there were lantern slides, which were the forerunner of the modern slide, which of course I use today in all my talks. However, I will not attempt to delve too much into the history of photography here.

THe Victorians had numerous comments on these ‘pieces of card with pictures’ as one statement from the Bognor Observer of December 11, 1895, shows: 'Photography affords a very nice pastime to a good many people, but the multiplication of instantaneous cameras has, it is well said, become a perfect nuisance to the general public.

'You cannot multiply copies of a man’s photograph without his consent. Why, asks a correspondence, should it be lawful to take a snapshot of him without his consent?'

THis long report concluded: 'THere are many cases of ladies who are positively afraid to emerge from the seaside machines or tent

in which they don their bathing dresses on account of this nuisance'. How times have changed! Before long people were, of course, clamouring to buy photographs and the new postcards – which were definitely a multiplication of a man’s image.

If you look carefully at the early stagemanaged postcard views, the people's smiling faces suggest that they were not really as camera shy as some of the reports of the time suggested. Mr WP Marsh, who had his studio facing the pier, advertised that he carried out ‘instantaneous photography’ as it was then known.

Luckily for us, he was also was interested in his locality and was a prolific producer and publisher of views of the neighbourhood, thankfully for the local historian. One of his major claims to fame was that his photographs of ‘high seas and breaking waves,’ were shown in many major photographic exhibitions around the country.

In the 1800s, of course, this new idea of photography was to remain a mystery for some and was considered to be the province of the rich and famous. As time progressed, it became an obsession for some individuals and for others it was a method by which they could make money.

number of photographers, who took pictures for postcards, for use in books, magazines and other saleable items.

One of the notable photographers was Cleeves, who was situated on THe Esplanade and in the High Street, where today we have the National Westminster Bank. THis chemist and photographer would take a variety of pictures of the town and then produce his own ‘home grown’ postcards. Another was King and Wilson, who were renowned for taking a picture one day and publishing it the next day with the actual date written on the front.

THese would then be on sale in the town for the visitors to send home to their family - giving a truly instant image of the town.

For many of the town's visitors the photograph was the major souvenir that reminded them of their holiday because of this over the years there have been street photographers, who would stroll among the crowds encouraging them to have a picture taken, perhaps with a monkey or parrot on their shoulder.

Photograph albums are a great source of interest and information. I have acquired one that is dated 1904 and shows various pictures of the town including a view of the railway station platform – I am not sure of the significance of this.

As cameras became more accessible, people would take them on holiday and build up their own collections, including views of the family on the seafront, especially in front of their own bathing hut. Here, it is interesting to note the fashions of the day in comparison to those of today.

Organisations or companies have used

pictures as part of their advertising. An example of this is Butlin’s, which, for many years produced photo key rings for holidaymakers to buy and take home. Other pictures can form an integral part of the memories of a particular event and the most notable colourful event for Bognor Regis was the clowns' convention.

Pictures taken at this event, by thousands of professional and amateur photographers, have appeared worldwide and adorned many magazines. In more recent years, the fridge magnet has become one of the major souvenirs to take home both as a reminder of their visit or as a present.’

During the early 1900s, pictures and images were used in a variety of ways. Some of the images were placed on to cups, plates and a variety of shaped china when it was popular to take home a piece of china, to join the growing hobby of collecting. During the later part of the decade, these images were improved and used as part of the town’s advertising.

As technology has progressed, images of people and places have been used more readily in a variety of styles. With the advent of the computer and digital photography it is extremely easy for an image to be transferred.

THis includes the T-shirt, a puzzle, and even your own special mouse mat to use with your computer.

All this of course is a far cry from the instantaneous photographs the Victorians complained about. But luckily people enjoyed the hobby and more people became involved.

One word of caution. Do we all write the date on our photographs – I know I don’t – so that in the future people will be asking: "When was that picture of the Regis Centre taken?"

Helpers – Chichester Stroke Club

Chichester Stroke Club meet at the Newell Centre, Chichester on a Thursday morning to give support to stroke victims. The Club is a unique facility providing continued aftercare and encouragement to stroke survivors when they leave hospital through mental and physical stimulation and support and respite for carers and partners, enabling them to meet likeminded people in a relaxed environment.

The club also raises awareness of stroke to the local community through fundraising, website, speakers and outings. Able-bodied helpers are needed to help those who have had a stroke at the club on a Thursday morning from 10am - 12noon. You will need to be able to help others move around, fold up chairs and tables etc.

Seasonal Support Volunteers help provide that extra operational support at these times to help make sure that the memories visitors make at Petworth are always the best ones. A typical shift lasts approximately 3 hours, but it’s also possible to sign up for a full day.

Whether you can offer one day a month, or a whole week, you sign up for whichever shifts bet suit you.

Hundreds race around the city as PostSport Corporate Challenge returns to Chi HUNDREDS of runners of all ages took to the streets of Chichester for the first Corporate Challenge of the year.

Taking place over three Wednesdays in late February and March, the event sees adults race five laps around a city centre course of 700 metres with the start and finish line outside the Assembly Rooms.

Times are recorded individually and as a team, with the best times over the three events being crowned the winners.

Wednesday also saw hundreds of school pupils take part, with children aged nine to 15 taking part.

Among those involved in the senior race was former Commonwealth Games 1500m champion Michael East, who formed a team with his wife, Claire, and two daughters.

East, who is now 41 and won gold in Manchester in 2002, was one of the quicker competitors in the first night of competition.

He was short, though, of his senior course record of 12 min 39 secs, a record which stood for ten years until American doctor Chris Zablocki shaved a second from it in 2016.

--Elsewhere and a number of Bognor Tone Zone runner took part in events over the last week.

A team of close to 20 finished the Brighton Half Marathon, with Danny Mahoney leading the club home in 1 hour 31 mins.

Hot on Danny’s heels were Duncan Stephenson-Gill (1.32.54) and Jess THomson (1.33.03) who chalked up another PB. Gary Pidgeon and Daryl Fairbrother finished in 1.36 while Karen Vilday was helped to a big personal best of 1:54 by head coach Keith Hardwell.

At the Wokingham Half Marathon was Carolyn Stapley who defeated another long-standing PB of hers by finishing in a time of 1.34.

At the Winchester 10k, Lisa Broad led a cohort of six home in another PB of 59.29.

Julie Ede finished bang on the hour mark with Tina Ede not far behind and also gaining a PB time of 1.10.

At the Jersey Sparton West Park 5k, Tony Hancock ran a strong time of 22.05 and Sarah Santer, running the extremely tough Brutal Bordon 10k, finished with a time of 1.37

BOGNOR under-17s strong season rolls on as they look to build on an impressive victory in the New Forest.

THe Purple and Greens came out 4419 victors against their counterparts at Ellingham and Ringwood in what was their first visit to the area.

On Sunday, they host the Isle of Wight Colts side at Hampshire Avenue (1pm) looking to keep an unbeaten run which stretches back to November rolling on.

THey will want to get off to a good start, just like they did in the New Forest when fly half Conner Herrington kicked an early penalty before a perfectly judged catch and drive saw hooker Tyrone Masaki touch down in the corner.

A second try followed soon after when, following several phases, skipper Harry Joyce used all his strength to crash through and score.

THe hosts came back strongly and scored a well taken try after a period of

concerted pressure.

Bognor hit back and from quick ball Masaki slipped through the first line of defence and outpaced the cover to score under the posts.

Herrington converted.

A fourth score followed just before the break when Freddie Hayes supported a break from the fly half. Half time 22-5 A raft of changes at half time disrupted Bognor flow and the home side capitalised to close the gap to ten points.

Bognor restored their lead through Masaki (2), George Orchard and flying winger Lewis Decarteret rounded off the scoring against E&R. -- Chichester U11s played in their first Land Rover Cup last Saturday, taking on Wimbledon, Cranbrook and Winchester in glorious spring sunshine.

THey also got to meet Joe Marchant, Max Crumpton and Niall Saunders from Quins who posed for photos and spent time doing a Q&A with the team.

RUGBY Chichester RFC return to action tomorrow, heading to London Cornish (2.15pm) in search of a win to drag themselves away from the dropzone.

Blues make the trip up the A3 buoyed after three wins from their last four in London One South.

THose points have seen them hauled up to tenth in the 14 team division, six points behind Cornish in eighth.

After a week off, Chi director of rugby Paul Colley will hope his xv will be well rested and ready to bounce back after a frustrating 28-20 home loss against THurrock last time out.

Cornish will be a tough nut to crack, winning six of their ten matches at the Richardson Evans Memorial Fields.

But, having lost three of their last four, Chi will be looking to exploit any weaknesses and propel themselves up the table.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor head to Portsmouth IIs tomorrow looking to extend their winning run to seven matches.

THe Purples and Greens are second in the standings, leapfrogging over thirdplace Sandown & Shanklin after a narrow 14-13 victory at Hampshire Avenue.

Four points from six help Lions celebrate Murfin's milestone

Chi Peake at the right time CHICHESTER City's march to promotion could get another step closer as they look to extend a nine point lead at the top of the table.

THe Oaklands Park side have been in excellent form all season, losing just three matches in the SCFL Premier so far.

THe last of those came in November to second-place Newhaven.

Since then, Chi have pieced together an unbeaten run of 15 matches which was further extended with a last-minute winner against in-form AFC Uckfield Town last weekend.

THe 1-0 win, combined with other results going their way, means that Chi have their biggest lead at the top of the whole season.

Of the nine games to come, only three are against sides in the top half, meaning that City are firm favourites to seal promotion from step five and into the Bostik South East.

THey can take another step forward tomorrow when they welcome bottom side Eastbourne United to Oaklands tomorrow (3pm).

City's management team of Miles Rutherford and Graham Gee will hope their side find

their stride quicker than last weekend when it took until 93 minutes before the deadlock was broken.

Ryan Peake headed home the only goal of the game against Uckfield deep into time added on.

As the defender wheeled away to celebrate with teammates by the corner flag things got even better for City as news came through that Newhaven had lost for the third time in four games .

With in-form Eastbourne Town’s 16 match unbeaten run also ending, after a 4-1 home defeat to Horsham YMCA in the battle between the teams in third and fourth spot, Chi have a clear gap at the top.

It was the second time the City defender scored late to earn his side all three points.

Back in December, Peake’s goal with five minutes to go against Langney Wanderers capped things off as Chi recovered from 2-0 down at half-time to win 3-2.

THis time, his bullet header that sparked scenes came in the 95th minute - and it could be the one that seals City's promotion from step five for the first time in its history.

PAGHAM will be looking to make it three wins from three as they look to piece together a late season charge up the SCFL Premier table.

After a poor winter which saw the club suffer from injuries, the Lions have found their feet again in the last week.

First came a 2-1 win against surprise package Lingfield at home, a match which marked striker Scott Murfin's 300th match for the Nyetimber Lane side.

Murfin played his part in the match, contributing to the victory which was sealed by goals from Howard Neighbour and a last minute strike from Harry Prisk.

THen, Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen's side secured a 0-0 draw at Arundel in midweek.

Next up is a return to Nyetimber Lane to face promotion chasing Eastbourne Town tomorrow (3pm).

THe visitors have been the division's inform side and are just three points behind second-place Newhaven as the race for the top spots hots up.

While Pagham have dropped out of the running and currently sit tenth in the standings, a win over Town could lift Lions up to sixth.

Blues bid to get back on track

SELSEY will want to get their top four ambitions back on track as they head to Billingshurst tomorrow (3pm) looking to get their first win in four.

Blues suffered a blow last weekend after falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to AFC Vardeanians.

THe match was billed as a battle for the top four in SCFL Division One, with fifthplace Selsey looking to leapfrog over their Brighton based rivals.

But Daren Pearce's came up short as a late goal from Matt Waterman sealed all three

points for AFC Varndeanians.

Blues will hope that a trip to a bottomhalf side Billingshurst will prove to be the perfect chance to find their form again after a run which has seen them also lose in the Division One Cup. To get a reaction from his side, Pearce took his side to Bostik Premier outfit Worthing in midweek for a friendly match.

While Selsey lost 4-0, the outing against a side four division higher than them will have been a good test and should set the side up for the run-in to come.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham will also be looking for a welcome return to form as they host Oakwood at the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Sids, who have won only one of their last four, lost 2-0 to promotion chasing Bexhill United last weekend.

With a tally of 30 points - 13 more than second-bottom Midhurst & Easebourne Steve Bailey's side should be safe from the drop.

But a match against an Oakwood side who are two places below them in the table should give Sids an opportunity to put a cushion between themselves and the relegation zone.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to bounce back from a defeat at high-flying Copthorne last weekend as they welcome Jarvis Brook to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins and Brook have been rivals for the last two seasons at the top end of the table.

But this year both have had to settle for mid-table security as other clubs have taken the lead.

With three points separating Robins in seventh and the Crowborough side in sixth, there will plenty to play for when the two sides face off against each other.

Bosham will want to do better than the 3-1 loss against second-place Copthorne last weekend when an early Ian Reddington penalty was about the only thing they could celebrate.

Smith urges Chi to 'buck their ideas up' CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is calling on the whole club to "buck their ideas up" as they look to return to form after back-to-back wins.

THe Green and White Army return to home turf on Sunday when they welcome second bottom Queens Park Rangers on Sunday (2pm).

While Chi remain top of the FA Women's National South, they are two points ahead of Coventry United but having played four games more.

But despite losing 4-2 last weekend at thirdplace Cardiff City to ensure they have lost back-to-back league games for the first time this season, Smith is calling on everyone at the club to ensure the trend is bucked sooner

rather than later.

He said: "We're exceeding every expectation.

To be where we are is fantastic but we don't want to sit back on our laurels and say we have had a great start and that's that.

"We have a cup final to look forward to and the girls should be driving to say they want to be in that team. THey will need to buck their ideas up in certain areas, I need to buck my ideas up and the other staff need to buck their ideas up to ask why are we losing games and why we are letting in sloppy goals."

THe defeat to Cardiff was sealed after Emma Jones hit a hat-trick within 31 minutes.

Cherelle Khassal grabbed a goal back before the break and, after the hosts added a fourth, Jess Lewry got a consolation before the end.

Pearce: We need no incentive to bounce back against Rebels Next Game

WORTHING (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce said he needs to find no words to ensure his side are raring to go for tomorrow's crunch local derby with Worthing.

Rocks suffered their worst defeat of the season last time our, falling to a 4-0 home loss to second-place Haringey Borough.

THat result saw Bognor slip out of the playoff spots and sitting in seventh, level on points with Enfield in sixth.

Tomorrow they will have the chance to get this promotion push back on track, when fourth-place Worthing visit Nyewood Lane (3pm).

Pearce said: "I don't think I will need to pick them up as anyone worth their salt will be up for a local derby with Worthing.

"I won't need to do that and Adam [Hinshelwood] won’t need to do that either."

Rocks produced one of their best performances of the season in the reverse match of the season just before Christmas.

Goals from Dan Smith and Mason Walsh secured a 2-0 win in front of a bumper crowd at Woodside Road.

But the Rocks hierarchy denied that result over the Rebels would have much of a bearing on tomorrow's contest.

Pearce said: "I think what we'll see is a tight match between two evenly matched sides.

"I see no difference than 99 per cent of other matches in this level and it will all come down

to chances. If we take ours then that will give us a lift and hopefully see us on to a win."

Rocks fans will hope that there is not a repeat of the disappointing home defeat to Haringey.

Despite dominating play early on, Bognor's front line were unable to convert and then Boro took charge, hitting Rocks on the counter to take a 1-0 lead at the break.

A further goal from a corner and a disputed penalty added to the Haringey tally before a fourth was added late on.

Pearce said: "We had our strongest squad available all season and we suffered the biggest home defeat. THose two things don’t go together.

"For the first 18 minutes we played as well as we have done all season. We created three really good chances but unfortunately we failed to force a save. If we scored then, then that whole game would have been different."

Another area of concern is that some media have linked first team coach Robbie Blake to the vacant Bradford City managerial role.

Pearce laughed off the rumours, adding: "Someone ought to tell them that he’s stopped playing as they need players being second bottom of the league!"

--Rocks confirmed this week that the Sussex Senior Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s will be played at Nyewood Lane on Tuesday, March 19 (7.45pm). Adults £10, under 65s £5, and under 16s £3.

More injury concern for Rocks IT'S been a running theme for the past two seasons. But it seems like, no matter how hard they try, Rocks are still suffering from injury woes.

What to do up front is now causing manager Jack Pearce the biggest headache.

THe departure of on-loan Portsmouth striker Dan Smith to Cork City and injuries to Jimmy Wild and Jimmy Muitt means that Rocks are relying on Leon Maloney, the 17-year-old Pompey youth player.

At the other end of the pitch, there is positive news as both Calvin Davies and Keaton Wood returned to the starting line-up for the 4-0 loss against Haringey.

Pearce, who admitted both were "slightly off the pace", said his concern was on the forward line.

He said: "We have got to try and sign a centre forward but everyone is looking to do that "If there's one thing not readily available anywhere it is a centre forward scoring goals at our level "You either have to discover one who is playing at a lower level or take a young player on loan. It's likely to be the second of those but most probably we will have the same squad for tomorrow."

LAST Saturday was not a very good day for Bognor Regis Town - the players, management, everyone involved with the club.

A 4-0 home defeat to a club who we're challenging for a playoff spot was really not what was needed.

We analysed the match afterwards as a group and agreed for the first 20 minutes we were the better side.

During that time it was more of a football match and that benefited us. We did get in a few times and the chances we had we should have taken.

When they realised we were getting in behind them they dropped in and hit us on the counter.

With one of the best wingers and strikers in the league they just kept them up top and played it up to them.

It's hard to break teams down when they drop in like that.

We get a lot of teams that come to us who do it and expect to get boxed in We are good at keeping the ball and playing good football so it is not normally a issue.

We will either go wide or flood the box but the problem with that is you need someone up top who is physical, going to win headers, and get on the end of things.

I think the turning point of the match came with that first goal as goals really do kill matches.

When a side is away and the plan is not to get beat, then that first goal does make the whole plan a lot easier.

THe second goal was from a corner which I think Dan could have claimed. THen there was the third which was an unbelievably harsh decision.

How Chad was deemed to have hand-balled it when his arm is by his side I don't know!

THen at the other end one of their blokes slid in with the hands above his head which the ball struck and it was not given.

Consistency is all we ever

ask for and it wasn't there on Saturday from the ref.

Still, it's gone now and we need to pick ourselves up.

To be honest, the mood afterwards in the dressing room was horrendous as we all really care.

Having reflected on it, the truth is that, given the size of the squad, we are overachieving.

To give an indication, this week at training we had less than a full team at the session.

It's just the reality. In comparison to other sides like Dorking and Worthing, who all have plenty of competition, we often struggle to pull a team together.

It's good to have Calvin and Keaton back in the ranks as when they are top of their game they are unbelievable assets.

But they have not played for months and they will need time. Two of the hardest home games we will have back-toback makes it tough for them.

Needless to say, the Worthing game is big and, while they are in good form, that doesn't matter in a derby. It never has done and never will do.

When we went there we weren't doing all that well and we produced one of our best performances of the season.

It will be nice to see some of the old Rocks players like Ollie [Pearce], [James] Craney and Alex [Parsons].

I do try and avoid former team mates before the match, only really saying hello in the tunnel.

THen I'll go and have a joke with them afterwards regardless of the result.

In my opinion, it should be that way as it's business when we're on the pitch.

I would say though that, without putting too much pressure on us, we need to pick up at least a point if we want to stay up with the pack.

Bragging rights always matter and I think we need it to show ourselves that we can beat the better teams in the league.
