THe owners of horticultural companies still have a series of unanswered questions - just three weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU. THe industry produces more than £1billion-worth of fruit, vegetables, salads and plants across the Arun and Chichester districts and has a 10,000-

plus workforce.

But John Hall, the consultant to the West Sussex Growers' Association, said uncertainty around Brexit was causing the industry deep concerns.

"It's very difficult to make decisions at the moment," he said. "One of the biggest concerns we have is about continued access to the European labour market.

"THe majority of people working in the horticulture industry come from

"A lot of economies in their home countries have improved as well over the last few years. Fewer people are coming out of countries like Poland to work in the UK and more are returning because they can earn decent money at home."

New school site at Ford is backed A NEW bridge over the railway line in Ford has been called for by a leading councillor.

Cllr Ricky Bower said the crossing would improve transport options around the district with the amount of development set to happen.

He made his comments at the latest meeting of Arun District Council’s planning policy sub-committee as it backed a site for a new secondary school.

THe preferred location is at the site of a large-scale area of housing which Arun has included in its planning masterplan.

Cllr Bower (C, East Preston), who chairs the sub-committee, said: “A bridge between the Yapton crossing and the Ford crossing would be a good idea.

“THe more we put into Ford in terms of development the more the need for the bridge will become reality.

“I am making the point because the school is a major piece of infrastructure.

THey are talking about the need to use Ford station.

“It may well be that a bridge across the railway line is something we would like to see to tackle some of the issues in that area. It has been a long-held wish of this council to try and resolve them.”

But Cllr Terry Chapman (C, East Preston) said a bridge in Ford would be difficult to build.

“THe issue of the railway bridge has been looked at in some detail in economic terms but there are some topographical and engineering issues with building a bridge there,” he said.

“Network Rail have said footfall would

be a problem at the station. THey have some operational problems there because of the length of the platforms. THey can’t even have long trains there from Bognor Regis.

“At some point, a detailed transport study will be needed. Just looking at the map and you can see Yapton becoming busier than it is now with people doing the school run from the housing at Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate.”

THe need for a new school in the Ford area was identified in Arun’s local plan when it was adopted by councillors last July. It will be a six-form entry school on a site of at least ten hectares to allow for a further four-form entry expansion.

A total of 11 sites were initially put forward by councils and landowners.

THese were whittled down to three options – C, F and L. THe preferred choice is Option F. If this approval is backed by all councillors, it will see the legal process start to allocate the land for a school.A host of permissions will still be needed before building can start.

THey include design and timing.

Arun’s planning policy team leader, Kevin Owen, said: “Linkages between the strategic allocations (of housing) and site F should be included in the masterplanning of the strategic sites to ensure safe cycleways and footpaths are included.

“Where linkages exist along Bonhams Farm and the Old Canal area, these will need upgrading and extending to provide a complete and consistent cycle link route.”

Free food offer for community groups from town supermarket CHARITIES and community groups across Bognor Regis are being invited to receive free surplus food from Tesco.

THe supermarket's community food connection scheme enables some 7,000 charities and community groups to pick up free food from its stores each week. But the Easter holiday sees some of those groups take a break to mean other organisations can take their place.

Tesco head of community, Alec Brown, said: "We know that there are some charities that may offer holiday clubs, or groups that put on special

events over the Easter holidays, and it is exactly those sort of groups that we want to hear from.

"Whatever time of year it is, we would much rather that unsold food is put to good use in the community, and feeds people first, rather than going to waste."

THe free food includes fresh produce like fruit and bakery products as well as chilled food such as meat and cheese.

Cakes and cuppas in bid to help beat polio

Bethany tribute f Guests joined students at the tea party WELL over 100 guests joined in a celebration at Felpham Community College to help to beat a deadly disease.

THe Purple For Polio tea party brought together college students, pupils from nearby primary schools and guests from the community to mark the latest stage in Bognor Regis Rotary Club's contribution to a worldwide campaign.

THe club gives 1,400 purple crocus bulbs - one for each pupil - to the college each year to highlight the work being carried out to eliminate polio.

THe tea party celebrates the blooming of the plants in the college's grounds.

Among the students who took part in last week's tea party were Adam Francis, 11, Emily Ingram, 11, Ruby Richards, 12, and Millie Towse, 12.

Adam said: "I have been helping to bake the cakes for today. It was the first

time I have baked cakes in the college.

"I felt I wanted to give something back to the college because it has done so much for me."

Emily said: "I have been doing baking as well. It's fun to try out new recipes and make types of cakes I've never made before.

"It's nice when your hard work has paid off and people are enjoying it."

Ruby said she helped to ensure the napkins were folded perfectly for all the guests to enjoy.

Millie said: "Polio is a disease which can be fatal and has died out in the UK but is still present in some other countries.

"It can cause people to go blind or not be able to walk and we don't want people to have to suffer from it or the side effects it has."

THis was the latest year in which the college had joined with the Rotarians.

THe colour purple is used because it matches the dye given in some colours to those who have been vaccinated against polio.

Michelle Kelly, the college's deputy headteacher, said: "We are celebrating the Rotary club and the work it is doing to eradicate polio.

"It has been a really successful campaign worldwide and it is something our students are really passionate about.

"Two of our students are talking about polio at the tea.

"THis is a really fantastic celebration of the work of our students and involving them in the local community.

"We are a UN rights respecting school and polio may not directly affect our students but it still affects other people."

Chichester plan criticised - see page 4

FAMILY members have paid tribute to a Bognor Regis woman who died after she was found in the sea.

Bethany Skinner, 22, passed away in St Richard's Hospital in Chichester on February 26. She had been taken there in a critical condition in the early hours of February 24.

Police are investigating the circumstances of how Bethany went into the water off Bognor Regis Pier and have appealed for witnesses.

Her family said: "Our loss is indescribable. Bethany's life was going so well.

"She grew up in Somerset with her mother and two sisters, had a very successful time studying art at Plymouth University and had recently graduated with a distinction for her art work and for a beautiful, delicate willow structure she had created, which spoke of her love for the natural world and her spiritual relationship with it.

"THe willow tent and its comforting hearth spoke of travel, shelter and home and was both timeless and contemporary, with its resonance for displaced people in the world today.

"Beth was working at Butlin's in Bognor and had plans to travel after that.

"She was such a kind and caring young woman and the testimonies

that her friends and teachers and acquaintances have sent us show how much she had touched the lives of all those around her and what a difference she had made to them.

"THese messages have brought us some degree of comfort in our pain.

"While we are mourning the loss of our dearest daughter, sister, granddaughter, neice and cousin, we also want to celebrate her talents, her creativity and her achievements.

"She had her whole future ahead of her and the tragedy is that she has died at the age of 22.

"We would like to thank all the professionals involved in her rescue and treatment, the lifeboat team, the police in Somerset and Sussex, the staff at Butlin's who went out of their way to support the family and, most particularly, the doctors and nurses in the intensive care unit at St Richard's Hospital, who were so kind and compassionate and who did their very best to bring Beth back to us."

As reported, a man who went into the sea to try to help Ms Skinner was also taken to hospital to be checked over. He was later released.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault in relation to an earlier incident on the pier and released under investigation.

` New homes plan ALMOST 300 new homes are being planned by Arun District Council.

Its new housing revenue account business plan enables it to build 170 properties for rent in the next four years and a further 105 up to 2029.

THe extra social housing is being made possible because a cap on borrowing for the account has been lifted by the government.

Arun's cabinet backed the plans on Monday. Council leader Cllr Gill Brown said: "THe removal of the cap is really good news."

by Aldwick parish councillors to improve two sets of public toilets in their area. THey have decided to spend the money on the Arun District Council-run facilities to pay for painting walls, installing anti-slip floor and grab rails among other work.

Criticism of plan for Chi CALLS have been made for help to improve major roads around Bognor Regis.

THe need for Chichester District Council to do more to ease traffic access to the city from the town was highlighted by its Arun counterpart.

THe draft local plan for Chichester envisages using a projected benchmark of 2035/36 as the model for improvements to infrastructure, such as roads.

But Cllr Ricky Bower, Arun District Council’s planning policy subcommittee chairman, said: “I don’t think people can wait until 2035 given the operational issues the A259 is under. It is full on a daily basis between Bognor Regis and Chichester.

“Putting more housing in the Chichester district will impact on the A259 and I can’t understand from their point of view. THey have got their housing together but the infrastructure is going to have to go along with it.

“In order to address some of these matters, there is going to have to be a plan. I don’t know what their infrastructure plan is yet.

“We have major issues in the west of the district with Pagham Road and the A259.

We have got to make sure Chichester gets the message that their infrastructure in this area has got to be deliverable on their issues and it has to help us on ours.

“THat’s the point I would make and this is the only opportunity we have got to put as much pressure on Chichester to ensure their infrastructure meets the

expectations of those who live in the Arun district.”

He said the Highways Agency’s response to the situation on Pagham Road was to install traffic lights 200-300 yards before the A259’s Bognor roundabout to enable traffic from Pagham to pull out. But this was dismissed by councillors as being unsuitable.

“THe solution to the Pagham Road problem is the diversion of Vinnetrow Road so it joins the A259 at the Drayton roundabout. We should be seeking to push that as much as we can. I don’t know how we can do that with regard to this local plan consultation,” he said.

“But we have got to put as much pressure on Chichester to deliver on that infrastructure by any means necessary.”

Arun’s cabinet member for planning, Cllr John Charles, the sub-committee’s vice-chairman, said: “Chichester seem quite determined to close that road up from Pagham.

“THe traffic lights there would see traffic queuing up on to the start of the A259. If they close that road from Pagham, nothing will happen. People will die there. THey will not be able to move anywhere.”

THe sub-committee agreed to conditionally back Chichester’s local plan subject to six conditions.

THese include justifying having more homes than jobs and the effect that will have on commuting and bringing in trigger mechanisms to ensure infrastructure was built at the right times.

Keen interest greets launch of European Movement in town SUPPORTERS of Europe have formed a new group in Bognor Regis.

THe European Movement's founding group comprises four different nationalities. English members were joined by Dutch, German and French citizens.

Turnout for A29 exhibition praised as plans go on show HIGHWAYS boss Roger Elkins has praised the thousand-plus residents who attended exhbitions about the new A29.

Cllr Elkins is West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure and made an unannounced visit to the final exhibition.

He said the attendance – expected to reach the 300 at each of the previous three events – was a credit to residents in the Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate areas.

“THis is exactly what we want. I am delighted that residents are coming out and looking at the proposals. Hopefully, we will get a good amount of feedback from them," he said.

“THe A29 is key. We are seeing development here and we need to ensure these schemes address some of the traffic problems which are important to both residents and businesses."

THe exhibition was held at St Philip Howard Catholic High School in Barnham on Saturday. It concerned the £54m plans of the county council and Arun District Council to create a 4.34km section of the A29 east of Eastergate, Westergate and Woodgate to improve traffic flows.

It would start from the existing A29 Fontwell Avenue, north of Eastergate, to the A29 Lidsey Road, north of Shripney.

A county council spokesman said: “THe proposed road will help to provide a more reliable connection to Bognor Regis and reduce traffic along the section of the existing A29 that is proposed to be bypassed, especially at the Woodgate level crossing and war memorial roundabout.

"THis will improve people’s journeys by reducing journey times and help provide safer journeys for all road-users, including pedestrians and cyclists.”

THe road is proposed to be a singlecarriageway in each direction with a combined cycleway/footway, a railway bridge and a foot and cycle bridge.

It will be built in two phases – the first north of the railway line and the second to the south.

Fontwell resident John Walters was among those who went along to the school.

He said: “THis road is to allow the housing to go ahead.

“THe first phase is just going to serve the new development. We may not even get the second phase. It’s absolute rubbish to say it is going to help the villages.

Geoffrey Bewley, of Barnham, said: “THere is not enough evidence that the new road will generate new job opportunities.

If that does not happen, then we will become a dormitory town for Portsmouth or east to Brighton. THat will generate more cars and the road will not solve anything, because there will be no improvement in public transport.”

Yapton resident Mike Crockett said: “THere are a lot of roundabouts proposed on the new road and we will end up with a lot of little queues of traffic rather than a few big ones.”

Arun’s group head of planning, Karl Roberts, said: “It is good to see the number of people here. We look forward to receiving a lot of comments, which will be taken into consideration going forward."

Council to debate road A REQUEST to take a fresh look at the A29 proposals will be debated by councillors next week.

West Sussex County Council's environment, communities and fire select committee will discuss the call-in on Wednesday. THe meeting will be held at 10.30am at County Hall in Chichester.

Residents are able to attend but they will not be able to address the committee nor will the session be webcast.

Labour councillor Michael Jones, who led the callin request, has criticised the decisions for treating the matter differently from the meetings about the A27.

He said: "THis is a major route across the county for many of our residents. In particular, I am hearing complaints that Bognor Regis residents are not being involved in a satisfactory way, despite being the nearest town to much of this proposed work."

THe debate will concern the decision by Cllr Roger Elkins, the county council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, to agree the route for the A29 realignment as well as the business case to

carry out the work and, if that is approved, to award a design and build contract for phase one.

Several other decisions by Cllr Elkins which relate to the road have also been questioned by Cllr Jones.

He will address the committee along with Cllr Elkins.

THe call-in will address the merits of the proposal, consider the process by which it was made and make recommendations to Cllr Elkins.

A spokesman for the StopA29Bypass group said: "THe call-in is a chance for the county council to be held accountable, to hit pause and re-appraise this road to nowhere.

"THe villages would face five years of traffic chaos during the building of the two unjoined-up phases before any through traffic could save a second of the promised but unlikely minute per journey.

"Arun and West Sussex councils need to start talking to villagers about how their evidence that showed a likely 3,000 houses in Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate has now ballooned to 4,180 without any publicity or explanation, bringing an extra 16,000-plus car journeys a day to this busy area."

He said: "We also have lots of worries about what is going to happen at the borders.

"THere are extreme concerns about hold-ups, especially when goods like young plants are being imported.

"THe last thing we want is for those plants to be delayed both in terms of damage to the plants and in terms of the storage and logistics of moving them."

Despite the potential problems, and the closeness of Britain's break from the EU as a result of the 2016 referendum result, Mr Hall said the horticulture industry around Arun and Chichester had a potentially bright future.

"THere are absolutely massive opportunities available. THere is more and more demand from the public and supermakets for British produced food and plants," he added.

"We are in a good position in Sussex to respond to that and produce more, which everybody wants to do.

"But, if we don't have the labour, it makes it more difficult to do that."

THe West Sussex Growers' Association was formed in 1927 and has 70 business members. THey range from family concerns to multinational companies.

In addition, the industry supports many ancillary businesses and jobs in the area.

THe West Sussex coastal plain is the ideal location for horticulture. It has the highest winter light levels in the UK and one of the country's best yearround climates.

Crops are grown for 12 months in 180 hectares of glasshouses and 140ha of polythene-clad structures.

THe day will be the latest joint project between students at the university and the Rox charity.

Overlooking by planned flats leads to refusal of proposal PLANS to replace a Bognor Regis house with nine flats have been rejected.

Arun District Council planning officer Simon Davis said the scheme in Victoria Drive would have a harmful overbearing impact on the occupiers of one of the neighbouring properties by stopping them from being properly able to enjoy their rear garden.

THe proposed rear car park, and the traffic that would be generated, would also have a harmful impact on the neighbour and those who live at the rear of the application site.

He says in his report: "Local residents object on the grounds that there is already too much high-density

housing on Victoria Drive and that the proposal will result in harm to the character of Victoria Drive."

THe application by Sam Quinn was to demolish the existing house and build a three-storey block of flats in its place.

Six of the flats would be onebedroom. THe other three would have two bedrooms.

A total of 29 letters of objection were received by Arun from residents in the area. THey were concerned about loss of light and overlooking among other matters.

Inadequate parking was another concern. Bognor Regis Town Council made no objection.

PARISIAN grandeur is being brought to life in Bognor Regis.

A team of event management students from the University of Chichester is staging the fun-filled day of entertainment in aid of the Rox music and arts charity.

THe Rox Spectacular will take place in Hotham Park from 11am to 5pm on April 27 and will be based on the famous Moulin Rouge musical dance entertainment venue in Paris.

As well as the performances, a feast of world foods and local businesses will be present for visitors to enjoy.

One of the six students who are managing the free occasion for all the family is its health and safety manager, Kelly Klimaytys.

She said the day would be packed with musical talents, beautiful catering, a host of activities for children and local businesses to support.

"Over the last three years, everything we have done within our course leads up to this final event, Rox Spectacular.

"It's been an amazing experience being able to work with lecturers who have been in the industry and for them to share their experience with us.

"Rox Spectacular has allowed our team of individuals to work together and learn from each other in so many different ways," she said.

"I am excited to carry on with our preparations for our final event held in Hotham Park on April 27."

IMPROVEMENTS are planned at one of the major retail sites in Bognor Regis.

THe works have been proposed to make the Arun Retail Park a more attractive location for shoppers and businesses.

THe BBC Pension Trust has asked Arun District Council for planning permission to carry out the scheme.

Clara Blagden, the trust's planning agent, said in a statement the changes facilitated significant private investment.

One of the applications for the Shripney Road site seeks to carry out external work to refurbish the front elevations of four of its unit.

"THe existing elevations are out-dated and in need of refurbishment and repair," she states. "THe physical works proposed will significantly enhance the overall appearance of the retail park and improve the shopping environment for customers.

` New hub update BUSINESS leaders around Bognor Regis have welcomed an update about the town's planned creative digital hub.

THe latest meeting of the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board heard details about progress on THe Track project in the railway station from West Sussex County Council.

Minutes of the meeting, from the board's advisor, David Myers, state: "THe 20-year lease is close to being finalised with Network Rail.

"Planning is granted, operator Town Square Spaces is in place and working with the sector group and contractor Keir appointed."

It would take six months after the lease was signed for the hub to be opened. Designs show two ground floor spaces, of 195sq m, and a 147sq m mezzanine to provide some 50 desk spaces, plus ancillary features.

"THe total investment is about £1.2million with strategic links to university as there are clear connections with (the university's) tech park subjects," says Mr Myers.

` Town's weather WARM weather last month saw the temperature in Bognor Regis peak at 18.2C (nearly 65F) on the 27th.

THe weather station in Andrew Goodwill's home in the town compared the conditions with a high of 13C (55F) last year.

THe situation was similar with the coldest day of the 3rd at -2.8C against -4.4C a year ago.

February's total rainfall was 23.4mm, with 10.2mm on the 1st.

Church-goers in worldwide prayer WORSHIPPERS from Bognor Regis area churches joined others from around the world in prayer.

Some 70 church-goers took part in the town's contribution to this year's world day of prayer.

THey gathered at Aldwick Baptist Church last Friday to take part in a service compiled by the women of Slovenia.

THe same service was celebrated by congregations in more than 120 countries.

THe first to take part was Samoa and the event travelled through the continents to end in American Samoa some 38 hours later.

Entitled Come - Everything is Ready, the baptist church's contribution featured five women who portrayed Slovenian women featured in the service - wives, mothers and grandmothers, Roma people, refugees and migrant workers.

Angela Halfacree, who led the service, said: "Today very much highlights the role of women around the world.

"Today is also an example of the more people who pray, the greater the power that prayer has - and we have the whole world praying. It shows a real unity in Christianity as well."

Her fellow baptist church member, Janice Spurles, led the organisation of the service. She said: "THe service takes place around the world at about the same time locally in each country. It's quite awesome to think so many people are taking part."

WRITERS have until the end of the month to enter Bognor Regis Write Club's first short story competition.

Julia Macfarlane, who runs the club, said: "We realised the mistake within a couple of days and made the changes but it was a big 'oops!'

"It is the first time we have run a short story competition. I just hope that's our only mistake."

THe first prize is £100, with £50 for the runner-up and £25 for third place. THe

20-25 short-listed writers will have their works printed in a book to be launched at the prize-giving ceremony this summer.

THe competition is open to residents aged over 18 in the following postcodes: PO9, PO10, PO11, PO18, PO19, PO20, PO21 and PO22 as well as BN16, BN17 and BN18.

Children defend rights of refugees to get council housing in our area CONCERNED pupils in Slindon have taken to their computers to defend the rights of refugees.

THe Year 5 and 6 children said they wanted to ensure the victims of war were given sanctuary by this country.

THeir desire to help followed a front page lead in the Bognor Regis Post earlier this year about a petition started

to ensure homeless people were given housing ahead of Syrian refugees.

Pupils of Slindon CofE England Primary School wanted to show their compassion in a series of letters to the paper.

Teacher Rachel Poulter, at the school in Meadway, said: "After reading the article, we carried

out a philosophical inquiry and considered all possible viewpoints.

"THe children overwhelmingly agreed that all vulnerable people should be supported and housed in the area and that both refugees and homeless people are equally in need of help."

` Women's day INTERNATIONAL women's day is being marked in Bognor Regis with a special event.

THe function is being held at THe Phoenix Centre in Westloats Lane by the My Sisters' House women's centre. It will open at 11.30am with a showcase by My Sisters' House about its achievements in the past three years.

Next will come a talk by author Helen Rebello about her book, THe Magical Unfolding, before Kelly Grant speaks at 1pm about running a business.

f Azza Soliman HUMAN rights campaigners are staging an event in Barnham tomorrow to support an Egyptian lawyer.

Members of Bognor and Chichester Amnesty International Group are holding the 'amnestea' or coffee morning to mark international women's day.

THe event will also support the courageous Egyptian lawyer, Azza Soliman.

She has been punished by the Egyptian government for defending some of the country's most vulnerable women against domestic abuse, rape, female genital mutilation and sexual harassment.

She has been accused of being a threat to national security. As well as a travel ban, her assets have been frozen and she faces a possible jail term of 25 years.

THe social event will take place from 10.30am to 12.30pm at 67 Downview Road.

Tea, coffee, cakes and bakes will be available, as well as cards to sign in support of Ms Soliman.

Margaret Robinson, the Amnesty group's Egypt campaign leader, said: "Azza Soliman has risked her own safety and freedom defending vulnerable women in Cairo and has been punished by the Egyptian authorities as a result."

A BOGNOR REGIS businesswoman has been highlighted by a regional business group for international women's day.

Janina Cooper was one of two women praised by the Coast to Capital local enterprise partnership for helping to inspire others.

Janina, pictured right, set up THe Base Skate Park in Oldlands Way in 2014 and has since seen more than 100,000 people use its facilities.

She was helped with a £36,767 grant from Coast to Capital's regional growth fund.

She said: "THe £36,000 which we received was amazing and made a huge difference to the start-up of the business.

"We have bred the world scooter champion and we regularly have world class riders visit us.

"We have worked with most of the schools in the local area and we are incredibly proud of our facility, community and the team who run it."

A resident of the Bognor Regis area, she was inspired to set up the skate park after her two sons started scooting and she began to spend a lot of time at outdoor skateparks.

"I witnessed a number of serious accidents, with no first aid equipment on site. I felt helpless," she said.

"I soon came to realise that the weather also played a major part in whether children could ride or not. A spark lit inside me and a vision and dream was born."

She spent the next year organising the planning application, meeting

local councillors, getting 1,000 people to sign a petition, taking out a £40,000 loan on her house and writing funding applications.

Dancers are in pole position for showcase

THe dancers, who specialise in pole fitness and aerial hoop, put together a special showcase at Bersted Park Community Centre to help raise around £800 for the charity, Village Friends.

THere were three acts during the 'Night of Dance', which included solo and group performances and a special chair routine from THe Golden Girls, who learn with instructor, Sue THompson, at the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis.

Other performances were from students who train across Sue's venues in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Trustee of the charity, Elizabeth Folman, said: "THe show was a wonderful community event, with a lovely atmosphere.

"THe performers were great and I was so impressed by their professionalism and technical skills, particularly their stamina, control and discipline.

"THe funds raised were amazing and

will enable Village Friends to hold three social events this year for those people we visit, covering the costs of hall hire and catering, and also what will be a real bonus, as we will be able to provide specialist transport for some of our most frail clients."

THis isn't the first time Sue, of Pole Passion, has held an evening to raise money for charity.

In March last year, an evening organised by Sue raised more than £900 for My Sister's House, a charity supporting vulnerable women in Arun and Chichester districts.

THe previous year, over £500, as well as tinned and non-perishable goods, were given to the Bognor Regis foodbank.

Sue said: "We are absolutely delighted with the huge success of our event again this year and really pleased we raised such a good sum for a really worthwhile charity.

"We wanted to do something to help people with dementia, as many of our students have relatives who are suffering with this.

"After reading that social isolation was a predictor of dementia, I decided that Village Friends was a great opportunity to make a difference in terms of preventing this heartbreaking condition."

WEST SUSSEX County Council has refused to apologise to parents it threatened with prosecution for failing to make sure their daughter went to school.

THe girl started missing lessons due to ‘high levels of anxiety’ in 2015/16 and, by February, 2017, had stopped going completely.

In March, 2017, the council told her parents that it would be prosecuting them.

After investigating a complaint from the mother – Mrs X – the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman recommended that the council should not only apologise for the ‘injustice’ but pay the family £400.

THe mother’s complaint was that the council had failed to provide support or alternative education for her daughter while she was off school.

A meeting of the standards committee was told that, while the council usually accepted the ombudsman’s recommendations in full, in this case it would not do so.

Not only was the council confident that its team had done its job properly, there were fears that to apologise and pay up would set a precedent.

THe meeting was told that Mrs X felt her daughter should have been treated as if she had an illness – but the family continually failed to provide medical evidence to support that position.

THe prosecution was withdrawn in June, 2017, after a GP’s letter and psychologist’s report were provided.

Town centres 'laid to waste' ONE of the leading internet companies has been criticised by a Bognor Regis area councillor.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon said it had been suggested to him that plans to boost the town's shopping area could contain Amazon-style retailing outlets.

But he told Arun District Council's cabinet on Monday he did not want to see any part of the project mimic the activities of the giant firm.

"Amazon has poorly paid staff who work under oppressive conditions in mega warehouses," he said.

He also accused the company of tax avoidance and aggressive business practices which had 'laid waste' to thousands of jobs on high streets.

He said: "You only have to look at Chichester's West Street, the bulk of which is boarded up and empty."

Cllr Wotherspoon (C, Middleton), Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said he supported the bid to the government for up to £25m to improve Bognor Regis town centre.

THe application was unanimously approved by the cabinet's members.

Karl Roberts, Arun's director of place, said the first phase bid would be lodged with the government by the March 22 deadline.

If that was successful, which would be known this summer, a phase two application would be submitted towards the end of 2019.

"THere are expected to be about 500 bids

and we need to explain how we are seeking to deliver a range of different projects," he said. "THere will be a lot of competition but I am hopeful, as ever, that we can deliver a good bid. We are in a very good place."

Arun would be using its 2003 Bognor Regis town centre masterplan for much of its work.

"We want to include the dwell time that people spend in the town centre.

"We also want to increase the footfall and try and divert some of the huge numbers who come to the seafront to the town centre and vice versa.

"We want to create more of a link between the seafront and the town centre. THis is not about increasing retail."

THe government has made £675m available to council nationally to help high streets to adapt to the internet age.

THe objective is to renew and reshape town centres to improve experiences of those who visit them, drive growth and ensure future sustainability.

It is expected most projects will be funded with between £5m-10m.

Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E) said: "Bognor Regis town centre, like many up and down the country, is facing challenging times, particularly with the growth of internet shopping.

"Arun has supported the town centre with the former town centre manager, the business improvement district and buying THe Arcade. But we have to run fast just to stand still at the moment because so much is going on."

Slipper swap LIBRARIES in the Post area are holding special ‘slipper swap’ events this month to help prevent falls.

Elderly residents across the county are being invited by West Sussex County Council to trade in their old slippers for a new pair, free of charge.

THese are just some of the events and activities taking place in West Sussex libraries as part of Wellbeing Month this March.

Debt is written off RESIDENTS of homes in West Meads have has the threat of having to pay £81,000 lifted.

Homeowners of the ten houses in St George's Gardens will no longer be liable for the money unpaid when the properties' developer went into administration.

Legally, the households could have been billed for between £3,400 and £10,200, depending on the size of their home.

But Arun District Council's cabinet agreed on Monday to write off the debt.

Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E), the leader of the council, said: "It's appalling that the owners of the properties have been put in this position.

"THis has only come to our attention when one of the owners wanted to sell."

THe cabinet member for planning, Cllr

John Charles (C, Barnham) said the matter started in 2011 when Mildren Homes agreed to pay £118,320 towards public space and affordable housing as part of its planning approval for the housing.

THe money should have been paid before work began but £81,459.77 was still outstanding when the properties were completed in 2014/15. Arun failed to start chasing the debt until late 2016.

Chief executive Nigel Lynn said Arun was legally right to pass on the debt to householders. But he said the money might have been paid if the council had acted sooner.

One of the residents, as they left, told the cabinet: "THank you all. THis has hugely lifted the anxiety and stress caused to the residents of West Meads."

` Housing fight fund A HIGH COURT judge will decide the future of a housing battle by Pagham councillors later this month.

THe legal figure will consider if the parish council's application for a judicial review of a decision to allow up to 400 homes to be built in the area should go ahead.

THe verbal hearing has been set for March 19 in London. As reported, it comes after an initial hearing into planning permission

by Arun District Council for the properties ended in defeat for the parish council.

A fighting fund of £105,000 to pay for costs incurred by Arun was backed by its cabinet members on Monday. All the councillors will be asked at a meeting next Wednesday to back the potential spending.

Neil Crowther's Arun's group head of planning, said the amount was the maximum the council would be likely to incur.

"THis includes counsel costs to defend the council's position and an estimate of potential costs that the council would be required to pay as a result of the claimant being successful in their judicial review claim," he said.

Arun would seek to recover its costs if the parish council failed to overturn the planning permission.

But Arun would have to pay Pagham's costs if the judicial review ruled the approval was wrongly given.

"THe council will be required to be legally represented by counsel," said Mr Crowther.

Backing for the homes was given

by Arun last October to Hanbury (PM) Ltd. THey are due to be built on land south of Summer Lane and west of Pagham Road. Also included are a potential care home and local centre.

Drink danger WARNINGS about the danger of underage drinking were graphically shown to Felpham students.

THe Year 8 pupils at Felpham Community College took part in an interactive workshop about the subject.

One of them, Isabella Govinden, said: "I learnt not to drink alcohol under the age of 18 as it can lead to serious illnesses and damage to your brain and lungs and after 18 to be sensible with it.

"It made me think about how different decisions can be lead to different consequences and how a silly decision can go horribly wrong.

"If friends try to peer pressure you into doing it, I learnt how not let them influence me."

THe event, called the Smashed Project,

was run by Collingwood Learning.

THe project is an educational theatre initiative which works with governments around the world and alcohol drinks industry to promote the dangers and risks alined with underage drinking.

College citizenship co-ordinator Yasmin Tetra said: "We run a number of workshops for students to educate them on life issues and growing up in the modern world, and the decisions they will have to make as young adults.

"Students watched a theatrical performance and then took part in a question and answer session, looking at making the right choices and the consequences of not.

"THe students worked well and came up with some sensible suggestions."

Sir, I wonder if your readers are aware of the proposal by Whaleback [Design and Planning] to build houses on an enclosed paddock to the rear of the Inglenook Hotel in Pagham.

I am not aware that planning permission has yet been applied for.

THis green amenity, which has been used by residents for a wedding marquee, overflow car park and morning and evening strolls, is already squashed between Mill Farm and the new Crayfern development.

Because of its location, this proposal could escape the notice of many local residents until it is too late to object.

I hope you feel this is worthy of publicity.

Sir, THe A29 realignment scheme will deliver no benefit to Bognor Regis and Arun in general.

THe proposed road will have seven roundabouts. You only have to look at the roundabouts on the Chichester bypass to see what is proposed is not going to save time or move the traffic any faster.

THe whole scheme is just to facilitate developers who want to build thousands of houses on Manor Farm land that Arun District Council has marked as a strategic development site.

I wonder if West Sussex County Council and Arun took Paragraph 026 reference ID: 8-26-20140306 of the guidance natural environment into account when choosing this land for development?

It states: 'THe national planning policy framework (NPPF) expects local authorities to take into account the economic and other benefits of the best and most versatile agricultural land.

'THis is particularly important in plan making when decisions are made on which land should be allocated for development. Where significant development of agricultural land is demonstrated to be necessary, local planning authorities should seek to use

areas of poorer quality land in preference to that of a higher quality.

'THe agricultural land classification provides a method for assessing the quality of farmland to enable informed choices to be made about its future use within the planning system.'

Natural England provides furher information on agricultural land classification. THe best and most versatile land is defined as grades 1, 2 and 3a and is the most flexible, productive and efficient in response to inputs and which can best deliver food and non-food crops.

Nobody from Arun at the public exhbition at Eastergate Village Hall could explain why Manor Farm was earmarked for development. THe land is grade 1 and 2 arable, some of the most productive farmland in the country.

With the UK about to leave the EU, this type of land will be needed for the UK's food security. Land that has been listed as grade 1 arable should not be built on, according to central government. So why are West Sussex and Arun councils so keen to build on it when enough brownfield sites are available?

THis land is too important for all our futures to be built on.

Sir, Last THursday we popped into Eastergate Village Hall, one of four venues last week where we could view plans for the proposed A29 bypass, pictured above.

As we approached the hall, we were struck by the shocked and gloomy faces passing us by as they left and this atmosphere of disbelief and despair was echoed inside the hall where, from display stands, pretty pictures of flora and fauna and quiet tree-lined roads smiled down us, the local residents.

Have your say? What for? We have no power because we have no money to fight the proposals for the sale of thousands of houses to eventually help pay for the bypass.

THe first stage of the road is of no

advantage to use whatsoever as it will be a cul-de-sac until money is found to implement the other stages.

He politely enquired how and when and all that was clear from the waffle was that houses had to be sold by the developers before they would hand over any money to help pay for anything displayed in the room. THe developers are not going to gamble on losing money.

It is a scandal and local papers' archives are full of articles over the years pointing to the cavalier attitude of Arun District Council towards the local parish council's attempts to present a reasonable plan for development in the Six Villages area which is already prone to flooding and sewage seepage.

Six or more years ago we were invited to go along to make our views known on the proposal for an idyllic 'Garden City' of 2,000 homes on church farmland in Eastergate and we made our very same reservations known to the team of smooth, expensively hired operators as we are still doing now.

Were our concerns heard? Of course no. THere are now 3,000 houses planned on that site.

THe despairing looks last THursday were because we feel powerless in the face of big money and big business. THis is all merely an expensive PR exercise in an area financially ill-equipped to fight it.

Letitia George rose to the spotlight after featuring on series four of BBC 1's THe Voice UK, where she became a member of Team Ricky and soared her way through to the knockout

rounds. Letitia also presents THe C Word on BBC Radio Coventry every Monday evening and has won this year’s Gillard Award for newcomer of the year.

While she will always be remembered for her breathtaking performances on THe Voice, she has gone on to forge an enviable reputation as one of the most passionate and hardworking soul singers around.

Letitia, who created Respect to Aretha last October with her band, said she performs as herself in the touring show.

"My tribute to Aretha is very much that. Nobody can do Aretha like she could. Some part of me thinks I'm crazy to try but I just want people to come to the show and feel like they leave with a little part of her.

"Although I perform each song as Aretha, I'm not trying to be Aretha Franklin. I just want to do her proud.

"In terms of putting on the show, I want it to be so aesthetically pleasing to people. I don't want it to be the band and myself just singing through the songs.

We want to put on a show and really give the audience something to shout about. Getting the audience involved is very important to me, added Letitia."

Aretha's death has inspired Letitia and her outstanding backing band to attempt the seemingly impossible. Very few singers could ever do justice to the Aretha Franklin songbook... but Letitia George manages to capture the very spirit.

Having been an Elvis fan since the age of five, Craig began his professional singing career in 1992, including with Butlins, where he was first asked to perform his Elvis Vegas show.

He was voted a finalist in the European Ultimate Elvis Heats 2007 in June and appeared live on BBC 1's THe One Show for the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death. He has won a number of awards at Elvis competitions and in 2009 appeared on BBC1's Gavin & Stacey for a Christmas special. CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK

You'd be forgiven for not wanting to miss this March 8-14

CAN You Forgive Me? tells the tale of Lee (Melissa McCarthy), a luckless writer, down at heel in the literary world, who hits on an ingenious cheat – forging letters from the famous to fuel her lifestyle of booze and feeding her cat. One afternoon, Lee’s in a bar, and in walks Jack Hawk (Richard E Grant), a sometime friend who is soon on board with her fraud, Grant, an Oscar-nominee, having the time of his life as an old roué. The film captures perfectly the grubby side of New York, the pain of loneliness and the joy of writing when it goes well. A gem.

In sharp contrast is On Her Shoulders, an intimate documentary about a 23-year-old woman who burst onto front pages worldwide when she won the Nobel Prize for Peace. Nadia Murad is a survivor of the 2014 Isis-led massacre of the non-Muslim Yazidi minority in Iraq. This arresting film critiques the limits of western compassion as it follows the Iraqi activist on her lonely human rights pilgrimage.

Beautiful Boy tells the story of Nic (Timothée Chalamet), a happy, well-adjusted child, who lives with his father David (Steve Carell) and stepmother (Maura Tierney) and starts to use crystal meth. The film documents that drug use, the parents' dawning realisation, and their attempts to understand and help. Can the beautiful boy retreat from that vicious, all-enveloping lifestyle choice or turn his back on his family?

Aftermath stars Keira Knightley as Rachael Morgan, wife to Lewis (Jason Clarke), who travels across Europe to Hamburg post-World War II to be reunited with him at a palatial home which he is helping to rebuild, the film about loss, reconciliation and the lasting impressions of war on both sides. Also starring Alexander Skarsgärd.

In 1969, Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk

on the Moon, is the subject of Damien Chazelle’s (La La Land) film, First Man, a poignant character study about a man who wants to isolate himself, not only from his family but from the rest of the world. Starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy as his wife.

Stanley Kubrick made one of the finest films, 2001, a Space Odyssey. Taking the director’s chair for Barry Lyndon in 1975, he cast Ryan O’Neal as Barry in the adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel about an 18th century Irish rogue who kills his rival in a duel, joins the British army and heads to Prussia to fight in the Seven Years’ War. He’s a thug, a gambler, a traitor, a womaniser, a soldier and a loving father, the cinematography another reason to revisit this gloriously rich film or to see Kubrick’s magic for the first time.

Mother-daughter relationships in focus My Mother Said I Never Should Tuesday, March 19 & Wednesday, March 20 A REVIVAL of the poignant story about motherdaughter relationships promises to bring My Mother Said I Never Should to the stage for a new generation.

In the touring production by London Classic THeatre, Kathryn Ritchie returns in the character of Jackie Metcalfe and will be joined by Rebecca Birch as Rosie Metcalfe, Lisa Burrows (Margaret Bradley) and Judith Paris (Doris Partington).

Set in Manchester, Oldham and London, My Mother Said I Never Should is a poignant, bittersweet story about love, jealousy and the price of freedom. THe play details the lives of four women through the immense social changes of the 20th century.

Using a kaleidoscopic time structure, Charlotte Keatley’s story focuses on four generations of one family as they confront the most significant moments of their lives. My Mother Said I Never Should is the most widely performed play ever written by a woman, having now been translated or produced in 31 countries from Japan to Peru.

Tribute to music of Dudley Moore Chris Ingham Quartet - The Jazz of Dudley Moore Chichester Jazz Club, Pallant Suite, 7 South Pallant, Chichester PO19 1SY Friday, March 15, at 7.45pm THE BELOVED comic actor Dudley Moore, who died in 2002, was also one of the UK’s most dazzling, swinging jazz pianists and composer of wit and depth.

Following their acclaimed Hoagy project, the Chris Ingham Quartet revisit Moore’s music on their own new CD Dudley, which they will showcase at Chichester Jazz Club.

THe playlist includes sounds from the fabulous 1960s Decca jazz albums, the television show Not Only But Also (1965-70) and the brilliant 1967 movie soundtracks for Bedazzled and 30 Is a Dangerous Age, Cynthia, produced the following year. THe Chris Ingham quartet comprises Chris on piano, trumpeter Paul Higgs, bass player Marianne Windham and George Double on drums.

Formerly pianist-singer with the acclaimed Flanagan Ingham Quartet, Chris has led his own quartet since 2013.

Gilman (1876–1919) broke away from his contemporaries to produce a view of modern urban life in the early 20th century that was entirely distinct. He combined the gritty formality favoured by the Camden Town Group and his mentor, Walter Sickert, with the vitality of post-impressionism, with its thickly applied paint and vivid colours.

Gilman’s subject matter and manner of painting were unusual bedfellows. His paintings infused scenes of everyday domestic life with a vigour clearly influenced

Visitors can discover how an artist whose career spanned fewer than 15 years became one of Britain’s most distinguished painters, in the first exhibition of his work in more than 35 years. It is curated by James Rawlin and Lara Wardle and tours from Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham.

Lunchtime recital at West Dean College Paul Wilmot piano recital The Old Library, West Dean College, West Dean PO18 0QZ Sunday, March 17, at 12.45pm www.westdean.org.uk A LUNCHTIME piano recital at West Dean College, north of Chichester, will feature Paul Wilmot, who was an organ scholar at University College, Oxford, where he studied under the renowned organist, David Sanger.

Graduating in 2003 with a first in oriental studies, he subsequently gained a master of studies from University College in 2004.

Paul then worked for the Clay Sanskrit Library, publishing a translation of THe Great Hall from the Mahabharata with the New York University Press, then in Mauritius as a repetiteur and writer for Opera Mauritius, and more recently as organist of the Vega archipelago in northern Norway.

Prized Dutch art at Petworth Prized Possessions Until Sunday, March 24 MASTERPIECES of Dutch art are on show at Petworth House as it hosts the final stage od a major National Trust exhibition.

Prized Possessions brings together Dutch 17th-century paintings by some of the finest masters of the ‘Golden Age’ from National Trust collections around the country and examines how and why this style of art was desired, commissioned and displayed in Britain.

He works as an organist in the town of Lillehammer in Norway, where he is active as a recitalist on both piano and organ, and is comfortable in a wide range of genre from the baroque to contemporary, ragtime and tango. Recent collaborations have included the BBC Singers and the Trondheim Soloists.

All-female Scottish folk band journey south The Poozies St Alban's Church, Tilford Road, Hindhead GU26 6RB Friday, March 15, at 7.30pm TOP SCOTTISH folk band THe Poozies, first burst onto the scene in 1991, when folk musicians wore elaborately-patterned woolly jumpers and were only seen in dingy back rooms and very late at night on BBC2.

THen, as now, the folk scene was very maledominated and so a conscious decision was made to form an ‘all-female’ band. As with most bands that have been on the road for so long, there have been various lineup changes but throughout the years THe Poozies have continued to tour worldwide

and attracted recognition and appreciation for their eclectic choice of material, unusual and exciting arrangements, and heart-tugging vocal harmonies.

Both Kate Rusby and Sally Barker, of THe Voice, are former members of the band. Today, THe Poozies comprises Mary Macmaster (electro-harp, vocals), Eilidh Shaw (fiddle, vocals), Sarah McFadyen (fiddle, banjo, guitar, vocals) and Tia Files (guitar, percussion, fiddle, vocals).

Mother's Day Treat at Denmans Garden Oasis of calm all year round WHEN the gardeners at Denmans Gardens finished planting 8,000 bulbs last autumn, their only reward was putting away their bulb planters and trowels.

Recounting the site’s history, which was part of an estate owned by Lord Denmans in the late-1800’s before being requisitioned by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn van Paasschen, chairman of the JohnBrookes Denmans Foundation, said that Joyce and her husband grew vegetables and cut-flowers at Denmans for the market in Covent Garden. Joyce later converted it to a unique ornamental garden which John Brookes redesigned during his 35+ years at Denmans.

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

Work on renovating structures in the intimate contemporary garden is well under way and other renovations are on the calendar. THe past year’s pruning and replanting is

evident everywhere. Gwendolyn said that “visitors are consistently impressed which is encouraging.”

With three full-time gardeners, Gwendolyn

praised her “amazing” team for their hard work and the creation of a happy atmosphere to which regular visitors return time and again.

Thai delights from a family tradition direct to your plate

As we were being seated for lunch, the couple at the next table were putting their coats on to leave and merrily assured us we’d enjoy our meal. THeir good wishes clearly weren’t unfounded as we heard the gentleman at the table behind explain that he hadn’t had dinner the night before so he could order two main meals.

THe extensive menu was enough to tempt us to over-order, too, though we sensibly began with a platter of mixed starters to share. We expected the standard selection of enjoyable but often boughtin and forgettable chicken satay sticks, crab cakes and spring rolls with the obligatory sweet chilli dip.

Instead, we received truly restaurant quality morsels, brought to the table by executive chef Kit Khunia who delighted in explaining which of the five freshly made sauces complemented each food.

Like all good chefs, Kit began cooking at a young age with his mother. At the age of ten he was promoted from carrying and washing up to actual cooking and by 12 he became her official taste tester.

His professional career followed a similar trajectory, working his way up through cheffing positions to come full circle as a taster in Mayfair restaurants and five star hotels.

Tuptim Siam has given him the opportunity to come back to his passion of creating dishes personally for

customers with whom he delights in interacting.

Special dishes are even ordered ‘off menu’ by regulars and Kit loves the creativity - though does request that you phone in advance if you would like him to prepare something not listed on the menu.

Having been tipped off, we were lucky enough to sample one of these, a beef massaman which is only available on THursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as it is

cooked to a sweetly melting tenderness for three hours.

My friend was less enthusiastic about tryong the sweet and sour chicken - one of Tuptim's most popular dishes - as she usually finds it a sugary, synthetic disappointment. She was soon eating her words however, with sticky moreish mouthfuls of chicken and the loquacious Kit was happy to provide the answer; no

artificial colours or flavourings are used in any of his dishes and the balance of sweetness is created with fruit juices instead.

Even the side dishes were praise-worthy. We plumped for the special fried rice, which lived up to its name, being great fluffy grains interspersed with enormous prawns, chicken, peppers and alive with flavour.

Desserts, aside from ice cream, are usually only available at the popular Sunday buffets. THese are lunchtime extravaganzas of well known favourites and exotic flavours, with a selection and variety you won’t know how to say no to. THe fourth Sunday of every month switches to an evening buffet, at which you’ll need to book or risk not getting a seat.

We tottered out in to the fresh air to walk off some of our over-indulgence along the beach, vowing to come again very soon and clutching the bag of leftovers we couldn’t bear to leave behind.

Although there is a menu of main courses and pasta dishes, including child-size portions, most people go to enjoy the choice of freshly-made tapas, a number of which have a Middle Eastern slant as well as traditional Spanish dishes.

A tapas banquet for four people at £19.50 is popular for groups with a selection across the menu but my husband and I, with help from Beyhan, settled in comfortable chairs, made our own choices from the vegetarian, meat and chicken, and fish and seafood sections, washed down with a house white pinot grigio

Treat mum to Spanish tapas and opera at city's restaurant MOTHERS can be wined and dined on delicious tapas food at a popular Mediterranean restaurant this month.

Children can treat their loved ones to speciality dishes from the region along with a free glass of prosecco or wine for Mother's Day. Key to the happy ambience of the converted wine cellar is the philosophy of owner Beyhan Cumali who treats everyone as guests rather than customers.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Loyal patrons and friends from her Selsey restaurant of the same name, which she has run since 2015, filled the tables for the two launch evenings and since then word has gradually spread

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

BROCCOLI SPROUT - a threeday old sprout contains between 20 and 100 times more goodness then the broccoli itself

• Make sure the jar that you choose is clean and oil-free • Use just a small handful of one type of seeds (because they expand in the jar) • Pour clean water onto your seeds, up to an inch over the height of the seeds • Cover the jar if it’s not a professional sprouting jar, with a mesh lid, as all that matters here is that nothing else can get into the jar except air.

And that is a must!

• Leave the jar with the water in to soak overnight. THe next morning, drain off the water thoroughly and rinse the contents of your jar • Drain off the water by preferably leaving the jar upside down. THis is the point your sprouting could potentially go wrong. If you don't drain properly and leave them in water your seeds could go rancid before they sprout. (you would smell it if this happens) You must drain and leave them without water. You then need to rinse your sprouts twice per day, draining each time.

• Leave in the light, but not in direct sun light. In 2-5 days your little seeds will be showing baby shoots, and this is when they are ready to eat.

When they are ready to eat you can pop them in an airtight container and keep in the fridge. THey will last for at least five days so eat them quickly!

You can then begin sprouting your next new jar so you always have an array of fresh sprouts on the go and can add them to everything you eat!

Community News & Views fit A resort g for a Kin IT WAS 90 years ago King George V and Queen Mary came to Bognor for their historic visit.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Monday, March 4 - THe Queen went for a drive on Saturday and visited Parham Park, Pulborough.

Yesterday morning, her Majesty attended by Lady Katherine Hamilton, Lord Claud Hamilton, Sir Derek Keppel, and Sir Clive Wigram, motored to Chichester and attended service at the Cathedral. Seats were occupied in the chancel behind the choir.

Her Majesty was received by the Dean and the canons on her arrival, and after the service had a conversation with Canon THeobald, who is 97 years of age and is believed to be the oldest Wykehamist now living.

In the afternoon the Queen, attended by Lady Katherine Hamilton and Sir Derek Keppel, walked to THe Moorings, to visit the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is now staying at Aldwick to recuperate after his illness.

Today her Majesty is travelling to London, but it is understood that she will be returning to Craigweil House in the evening.

Saturday, March 9 - THe King passed a quiet day at Craigweil House yesterday. Dr Woods attended to administer the artificial sunlight treatmment.

THe Queen drove to Amberley yesterday and visited the castle, which is being restored by Mr. T. A. Emmett and his wife, a daughter of Sir Rennell Todd.

ENTRIES are filling fast for the latest popular classic car tour to be held by Bognor Regis Motor Club.

THe ninth Regis TAP (Tour And Picnic) will take place on September 1 - and places are already being snapped up.

THe motor club will again use the event to raise funds for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance.

Ali Green, the club's press officer, said: "THe entry is limited to 80 cars registered before December 31, 1989. However, entries will be considered from later interesting classics with discretion from organisers. To date, already 61 deposits have been received."

Among those to take part in last year's TAP were Chris Need and Lisa Robinson, from Bognor Regis, in their beautiful Frazer Nash car, pictured above by Mick Briggs. THeir participation has helped raise more than £32,000 for charity in the previous TAPs. "We are very honoured to be returning for the ninth year to Great Ballard School as our start venue, where breakfast butties and tea/coffee are included in the entry fee," said Ali. BANKING staff in Bognor Regis are going on the run for one of the town's charities.

Employees of the Santander branch have taken on a 24hour run challenge in aid of 4 Sight Vision Support, pictured above.

THey will be running a total of 24 hours throughout this month to end in the afternoon of March 16. Customers can also take part.

One of the employees who will be joining in the Run 4 Sight, Cassie Partridge, said: "We think it's really important to support the local community.

"We love doing this through joining them in their specific events or by inviting them in to raise awareness.

"It's great to see and hear the real difference the charity has in our community."

CREATING thriving urban centres was the subject of a debate held in Bognor Regis.

Coast to Capital local enterprise partnership staged its annual stakeholder update last week on the town's campus of the University of Chichester.

THe organisation is set to negotiate a local industrial strategy with the government in the coming months to prioritise policy and investment in the area along the West Sussex coast and up to Gatwick Airport.

At the event, held in the campus' tech park partly funded by Coast to Capital, the audience heard it would work closely with local businesses, local authorities and industry sector experts to refine the plans for future development.

A number of principles were set out for delivering strong urban centres, including great civic governance, wide public support and a clear vision.

THe priorities identified in the Gatwick 360 strategic plan form the basis of what will be agreed with the government this year.

THey include opportunities to create skills for the future, pioneer innovation and promoting transport mobility.

University of Chichester vice-chancellor Professor Jane Longmore has specialised in urban history during her academic career and has a particular interest in the continuous renewal of urban communities.

She said: "Without doubt, our high streets have suffered over the last few years and this is of considerable concern to our region's economy. High streets and shopping centres across the region and beyond are now missing some of the big name brands and shops that were a mainstay for decades.

"THe university is working closely with Coast to Capital and other organisations to provide the expertise and business acumen necessary to stay ahead of the national trend.

"THe aim is to ensure we regenerate our high streets into areas that attract residents, shoppers, and workers which work as vibrant centres of the community."

Jake Perry, the government's minister for local growth, said: "I'm impressed by the work Coast to Capital has done to produce its strategic economic plan, Gatwick 360, and its co-operation with local partners and the government to develop a local industrial strategy."

THe tech park was a great example of Coast to Capital investing in the science skills needed to underpin economic growth, he added.

JAZZ from Scotland is heading to Barnham next week.

Duo Ian Millar, saxophone, and pianist Dominic Spencer, pictured above, will be performing one of jazz in village concerts at Barnham Community Hall.

THey will be playing their accessible and melodic brand of jazz from 8pm on March 16. Interwoven with the tunes, will be tales of amusing stories about some of the pair's touring experiences from the places they have played and visited.

Ian said: "We usually set the hall out in a cabaret style with low lighting and tea light candles on the tables to create an intimate concert setting.

"Our concerts are usually well attended and we have had some wonderful and memorable jazz evenings throughout the UK over the years."

He and Dominic have been performing together for a number of years playing melodic improvisations on jazz standards and original compositions.

THeir style of jazz concentrates on developing melodic ideas within the framework of the melody of a tune, while maintaining the concept and groove behind it.

THousands of people have attended their shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and they have also performed at the Scottish capital's jazz festival and the Glasgow Jazz Festival.

Area contains much of interest for visitors History which dates back centuries can be seen in Pagham EACH time I travel around the district I become more aware of historical and interesting facets of our locality.

I was taking another look at Pagham and Nyetimber recently, an area I feel sure that still many people think is ‘out there’ but do not travel to see what is available. I would say that there are still some companies, organisations and people who will insist in stating that they live in Pagham, near Chichester, to them I say ‘what about Bognor Regis’?

THere are so many aspects that it is difficult to know where to start. Did you know, for instance, that the original village of Pagham was at one time one of the largest ports in England and was used to send wool to Europe? However, the harbour silted up in the 14th century and the wealth of the area diminished.

Let us first go down to the beach - here it is possible to walk and see one of the Mulberry harbours that were constructed as part of the war effort in 1944. On the beach, a large rock was once placed, with a plaque providing information on this particular part of the war effort, and also to act as a memorial to mark the 55th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1944, also the historic association of Pagham beach with these Mulberry harbours. THe boulder has since been removed because of

the erosion of the beach.

THe artificial harbours were 6,000-ton structures used during the liberation of Europe and by June 5, 1944, had been assembled between Pagham Beach and Selsey. THis was done apparently to ‘hide them from enemy view’. During the summer of 1944, they were used along the Normandy coast to allow thousands of men and equipment to land as part of the invasion at that time.

THe Pagham beach area has, of course, over the years come in for many historical reviews and articles both in the national and local press, also in certain magazines for the interesting homes that were created with the arrival of the railway carriages.

THese were intended to be holiday homes, but over the years, the climate and location made them an excellent area for permanent residence, and now these carriages have been swallowed into more modern homes.

It is still possible to see the outline of some of the carriages in gardens being used as sheds, or as part of club houses. Sometimes, when homes are sold today, they include the phrase ‘complete with interesting features,’ this can mean original windows, frames or other memorabilia from the original carriages.

set had a notation on the reverse stating, they were obtainable from G. Morris, Adames Lane, Tel. Pagham 16. Mr. Morris was, in fact, the local stationer and newsagent, who appeared to take photos of various railway carriages and have them for sale in his shop.

Adames Lane is today known as Sea Lane, Pagham.

Church Farm holiday complex today dominates any aerial view of the district, but it also had a Second World War use, such as a firing range, and also one area in the complex became known as the ballast hole!

Still staying in this vicinity we have the church of St THomas a’Becket. THe Saxons built the first church in the 7th century AD, on land given by Caedulla, the King of Wessex to St Wilfrid, in gratitude for having saved the people of the area from starvation.

With that amount of history, it is certainly somewhere to visit. One feature of great interest is the Rose Window, presented

by Sir Arthur du Cros in memory of the convalescence of King George V. THere are so many interesting facts connected with this church I suggest you pay a visit.

Over the years, the visitor to any area would have looked for a welcoming hostelry and they would have been well catered for with THe Lion and THe Lamb. Each of these premises has its own tale to tell, such as THe Lion, which is thought to have been built in the 15th century, and there are tales smugglers used it, and that it contains a priest hole and a secret panel.

THe Lamb is reputed to have been built about 1702/6 and was an early ale house. THe Bear has had two sites. THe nearby Inglenook

Hotel was developed from the conversion of two cottages about 400–500 years ago. More recently, the Kings Beach was opened during the expansion of the area in the 1930s. Its name derived from the fact that King George V stayed at Craigweil, which fronted on to the local beach. THe pub has since become a convenience store but the building is still recognisable.

Walking around the village there are so many hidden aspects of history, such as the windmill which is now a retirement housing association, one of the ‘oldest houses in the land’, which is currently a convalescent home situated in a cul-de-sac. Originally, it would have been a house along a typical farm track of the time. THere are also quite a number of thatched cottages, some on the main roads, others hidden behind modern constructions.

THe 1807 Guide to Bognor or Hothamton provides only a brief description of the area, but states that it is ‘at least four miles distant from Bognor, and though not much frequented by company, its proximity to the sea, its harbour, and situation at the base of a peninsula, claim our notice, or, at least, amply repay the trouble of a visit'.

In 1964, much of the area around the sea was declared a nature reserve and this now includes more than 700 acres of salt marsh and nearly 400 acres of farmland. THe area is frequented not only by wintering wildfowl and migrating waders but also by us, the general public, who come to enjoy the peace and solitude of the area.

Battling Blues look to ease fears of PostSport the drop in crunch Chobham clash CHICHESTER RFC's rollercoaster season rolls on as the Blues just can't seem to shake off relegation talk.

THe Oaklands Park side are tenth in the 14-team London South One, just five points above the bottom three.

Blues missed out on the chance to extend that gap when they suffered a 31-26 reverse at London Cornish last weekend.

Even though Chi came back from south west London with a losing bonus point, it is wins which are needed to ease any nerves.

Paul Colley's side can do that tomorrow when they welcome ninth-place Chobham to Oaklands (2.30pm).

After suffering two defeats in a row, Chi will want to recapture the killer instinct which they displayed in early February when they defeated local rivals Havant and league leaders Brighton in consecutive weeks.

Blues started well against Cornish with scrum half Harry Seaman diving over for an early try. THe hosts hit back with two scores but a penalty and drop kick from fly half Henry Anscombe along with a Declan Johnson try put Blues in at the break 14-18 up.

After the turnaround, Cornish came out the

stronger and scored their third to take the lead.

Matt McLagan put Chi back in front but the hosts replied just four minutes later. 28-23.

Anscombe added a penalty but, despite Cornish being reduced to 14, Blues just could not find the killer instinct and convert a long possession in the opposing 22. Instead it was the hosts who rounded off the scoring leaving Blues to rue what could have been.

In Hampshire Premier, second-place Bognor will look to extend their winning run to seven when they welcome Fareham Heathens to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Purple and Greens beat Portsmouth IIs 54-23 away last time out.

--Chichester RFC paid tribute to former club president Derek Parker who passed away last week.

Derek, who was chairman and then president from 1978 to 1988, was instrumental in designing and building the first permanent home for the club.

A club statement said: "Derek took great interest in everyday matters and for many years refereed the lower sides in his own inimitable style. A true clubman and a true Chichester RFC man."

CHICHESTER flyer Jess Breach will be looking for personal and team glory as she continues to star in England's hunt for a Six Nations Grand Slam.

THe 21-year-old has been in sparkling form for the Red Roses, racking up an amazing tally of 16 tries in just six international appearances.

THat form has continued in the Women's Six Nations where Breach has scored five in the tournament so far - including braces against last year's winners, France, and Wales, last time out.

THe former Chichester RFC youngster will want to continue that form in round four when the Red Roses take on surprise package Italy (tomorrow, 12.05pm).

With over 8,700 tickets currently sold for the clash in Exeter, the match will be a record breaker, being the highest attendance for a Red Roses’ home fixture outside the World Cup. For Breach it will be another chance to impress in the 14 shirt which she has made her own since returning from the England

Sevens programme.

After six tries on her debut against Canada in November, 2017, the Harlequins Ladies wing has scored in every England game she has featured in.

THe brace against Wales showed off a range of the skills, much to the delight of England head coach Simon Middleton.

First there was a cool finish out wide to round off a free-flowing attack from England.

THen, following some wonderful offloading by the backline, Breach added her second when she handed off and broke through.

YOUTH RUGBY: Bognor under-17s Colts side were celebrating double success last weekend.

As the team continued their unbeaten run with a 57-12 victory over the Isle of Wight colts team at a rain-soaked Hampshire Avenue, four of the squad were at Maidenhead RFC playing for Sussex under 17s against Berkshire.

Alfie Spurle (scrum half ), Lewis Decarteret (wing), George Orchard (second row) and Bradley Smith (Number 8) all featured in the match for the county side.

THey look to build on their success as they next take on Surrey at the end of this month.

Elsewhere, Chichester U12s hosted East Grinstead for the first game of the Phase 2 Sussex Waterfall competition THrough sustained pressure and the will to win the 50/50 ball, Chi applied the pressure throught the whole game on their newly-promoted opponents.

With tries coming from Jaiden Cloke, Jonah Hutchings and Archie Ross it was a excellent demonstration of teamwork and 'grit'. A good start to Phase 2, but, with areas of improvement noted by the coaches.

Lions left licking their wounds after heavy loss and key injury

Hundreds set for city race HUNDREDS of runners will return to the streets of Chichester as the second leg of the Corporate Challenge gets underway on Wednesday.

More than 800 people of all ages took part in the first event a little over a week ago.

Taking place over a course of 700 metres, everyone from primary school pupils to former Olympic athletes runs laps which start and finish at the Assembly Rooms.

THe event on Wednesday, which is the second of three legs, will see junior races starting at 6.30pm with the adult events from 7.30pm.

Jonathan White, of Solent MD, was the first person home in the first race, completing the 4,500 metre course in an impressive 13 mins 26 seconds.

THis was well clear of Jack Woods (Worthing Hares 13:44) and Ethan Fincham (Team Synergy - 13:47).

THe first female home was Cassie THorp (Solent MD 15:49) followed by team mate Katie Hopkins (16:07).

Chi Uni's Alice Wright was the first home-grown athlete home in the women's standings with a time of 16:13.

In the youth races, the first home were Isaac Glanfield

(Downview, primary boys - 4:45), Florence East (Lyndhurst, primary girls 4:48), Oliva East (Mayfield, Year 9 & 10 girls - 6:59), Hattie Bond (Petersfield School, year 7 & 8 girls - 7:47), Cameron Walker-Powell (Mayville High, Year 9 & 10 boys - 9:14) and Harvey McGuinness (Bishop Luffa, secondary boys - 6:51).

Away from the city, Helen Dean will be flying the Chichester Runners flag as she takes part in the Age Groups Masters England 10k Championships.

THe Selsey-based runner qualified for the event after running a personal best of 44.11 at the Chichester Priory 10k last month.

Competing for England in the over 60s category, Helen will be up against some of the best runners from around the UK in the event.

Another Chi runner who has been on international duty is Mike Houston.

THe man known locally as 'Mr Park Run' competed for Scotland in the Tokyo Marathon last week finishing in an excellent time of 2:38.

PAGHAM'S joint-managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen will be looking for an upturn in fortunes as the Lions' poor run continues.

THe Nyetimber Lane side have won just once in their last seven matches, the latest of which was a 5-0 home defeat to Eastbourne Town.

Even though the visitors are flying and chasing a promotion spot, the loss - the club's heaviest all season - gives those in charge plenty to think about.

Simmonds and Hellen, who had an excellent first year in charge of the club, will be looking for a reaction tomorrow when the Lions head to Hassocks (3pm).

Even though the pair have the support of the board, the club will want to see a young squad end the season on a positive note.

THe management duo will have their work cut out though, particularly given that leading scorer Dan Simmonds is likely to be out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury sustained in the loss to Town.

With eight games of the season and Pagham sitting 10th, a top half finish in the SCFL Premier should be the bare minimum for a side who were challenging for the top two until just before Christmas.

City continue to lead the way

CHICHESTER City's march to the SCFL Premier title continues as the Oaklands Park side take a nine point lead into the final two months of the season.

Miles Rutherford and Graham Gee's side have seen the goals dry up in recent months as the club get ever closer to lifting the county league crown.

But, points rather than performances are what matters at this stage of the campaign with Chi wrapping up their second 1-0 win in a row with a tight victory over bottom side Eastbourne United last time out.

Next up is a trip to Lancing tomorrow (3pm) with Chi looking to extend a 16 game unbeaten run in the league.

THey will need to show the same determination against the Lancers as they did last weekend, when United proved to be a lot tougher than their league position suggests.

Kaleem Haitham was the match winner for Chi, latching on to a through ball from Josh Clack to poke home just after the interval.

City had to hang on with the visitors wasting a late chance and having a late penalty appeal waved away by the referee.

City’s nearest title rivals, Newhaven, also won 1-0 so the gap between first and second place remains nine points, with the Dockers still having a game in hand.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey will be looking to keep up the pressure on the top four as they welcome Mile Oak to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

Blues are currently fifth in the league, having lost just once in the league in the last three months.

A Jordan Warren brace for Daren Pearce's side against Billingshurst last time out means they continue to sit four points behind the top four.

Meanwhile, mid-table Sidlesham have a top half finish in their sights as they head to Seaford Town tomorrow (3pm).

Steve Bailey's side have impressed on their return to senior football and now sit tenth after a narrow 1-0 win over Oakwood last weekend, with captain Robert Madden getting the winner.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to build on a five-star show last time out as they welcome Rottingdean Village to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins defeated Jarvis Brook 5-3 last weekend thanks to goals from George Briance (2), Alex Barnes, Alex Jarrom and Kieran Magee.

Bosham lost 2-1 to Dean in the reverse fixture five weeks ago.

Chi coach: we must start games quicker CHICHESTER City Ladies coach Craig Burns is calling on his side to continue to progress as they look to cement their position in the top two of the FA Women's Southern Premier.

THe Oaklands Park side have stumbled in recent weeks, losing three of their last five in the league.

THose results have seen Chi slip off top spot.

With seven matches still to play and teams below them in hot pursuit, City will want to ensure their good start to the campaign does not end in disappointment.

After a 4-2 loss at Cardiff City a fortnight ago - which was all but sealed by three first half goals for the hosts, the Chi coaches are hoping their side will come out firing when they host Loughborough Foxes on Sunday (2pm).

When asked about the poor start away in south Wales, goalkeeper coach Burns said: "Maybe it's a confidence thing or perhaps people switched off after a long journey. We need to be quicker out of the blocks."

City were due to play Queens Park Rangers last weekend at Bognor's Nyewood Lane but the match was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

All the focus now is on a home match against the Foxes at Oaklands on Sunday.

Burns said: "It's the progress of going from Oxford where we [won 1-0 but] didn't create chances to Cardiff where we did and now we have to take them. We're putting that game behind us now, we've taken the positives and now we're moving forward."

Rocks boss believes playoff race will go right to the wire Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the hunt for playoff places will come down to the last game of the season.

THe Nyewood Lane side sit seventh in the Bostik Premier after a last minute goal denied them a morale-boosting win over local rivals Worthing.

An injury-hit Rocks side were hanging on to a 2-1 lead when Jesse Starkey struck late for the Rebels.

It was a tough result to take for the majority of the 1,100-plus who packed into the Nye Camp for the match.

But, while the result against a Worthing side who are packed full of former Rocks and competing Bognor for a place in the playoffs will feel like a loss, Pearce believes there's still plenty to fight for as the season enters its final two months.

THe run in starts tomorrow with a trip to the Kent coast to play Margate, who are unbeaten in their last five matches.

Pearce said: "It's not a must win but the position we are in with the games we have left it would be handy to win.

"When you look at this league, where everyone is beating each other, it could go to the last game of the season where four teams could be fighting for a single spot. It will go like this right to the end of the season."

Rocks looked like they would be taking maximum points off the Rebels after a

composed first half against their Sussex rivals.

Mason Walsh and Joe Tomlinson put Bognor two up at the break before former Rock James Crane halved the deficit with a penalty. THen Starkey struck late with the equaliser.

THe biggest issue for Pearce and first team coach Robbie Blake is trying to find a full squad of fit players.

Of those on the creaking treatment table at Nyewood Lane, Gary Charman and Jimmy Wild are unlikely to play again this season, while leading scorer Jimmy Muitt will be missing again tomorrow.

Calvin Davies and Doug Tuck, who both came off in the draw against Worthing, are also major doubts.

Others carrying knocks are Mason Walsh, Keaton Wood and on-loan Portsmouth forward Leon Maloney Pearce said: "It's a problem. I can be held responsible for a lot of things but can't do anything about that.

"THis past week we had more on the treatment table than we did at training. It's difficult trying to find replacements plus we also have the cost of paying those not available.

"It's a challenge - if you look at where we were a fortnight ago when we had it confirmed that Dan [Smith - who's now at Cork City] and Brad Lethbridge were staying for season and Keaton and Calvin were fit, now that's all changed."

Davies injury blow for Bognor HIS return from injury was supposed to start the Rocks run into the playoffs.

But, just a fortnight after returning to the Bognor side, influential right back Calvin Davies is back on the treatment table - and is unlikely to recover in time to feature for the rest of the season.

THe former Portsmouth player has been influential to the Rocks in recent years, giving the Nyewood Lane side an extra option when they burst forward.

But a knee injury sustained in the autumn has kept Davies out of the starting line-up for more than two months.

Rocks nursed him back to health gradually, easing him back into the starting eleven.

But in the second half of the 2-2 draw with Worthing, Davies went down in agony with early assessments showing it's a repeat of his knee injury.

Pearce said: "I will be surprised if he plays again this year - he may do but I will be surprised.

"He was out for a long time last time and it's the same knee and same injury. He may be back for last game of the season or the playoffs, if we make it, but we will have to wait and see."

IT'S fair to say it took me a good day of two to get over last weekend's draw with rivals Worthing.

I was still seething about it on Monday, especially the way it all played out in the second half.

First half I was almost surprised at how we managed to play and manage the match.

We let them dominate possession but when the chances came along we took them - something a lot of Rocks fans have been calling for all year!

At times, it almost felt like an away game - except for the crowd of course who were excellent at urging the Rocks on.

It was just a shame that it slipped away from us right at the end.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was thinking that the equaliser was coming.

All that pressure and all those corners was not good for the heart rate and decisions just didn't go our way.

It was good the final whistle came when it did, as if we had played another five or ten minutes I think Worthing would have got a winner.

THe only bonus was we got a point, which was a lot more positive result than the one the week before against Haringey, who look like they will be top three by the end of the year.

Dorking, I think, have won it so now it's all about who will finish in those four spots below them.

I have got a feeling that Worthing will make the playoffs as they have strength in depth and players coming back to fitness.

I just don't know if we will join them!

If we get all the players fit then we could make a charge. But injuries are hurting us at the moment, with some important players not available at the time it really matters.

Jimmy Muitt, who missed the Worthing match, will be

important as it lifts the team when he scores.

It looks like Calvin is injured again (although I think he's up again walking) and Mason Walsh also came off with a knee injury.

All these things just seem to happen at once although I did hear the physio saying that Calvin's injury is not as bad as it looks - fingers crossed!

Picking up one point from two home matches means we are now down to seventh in the table.

Next up is Margate who are struggling so we have to get a result there.

It is amazing what one win could do - one week we're down and out and the next we're back up in the playoffs.

With nine matches left, though, we have to start picking up points sooner rather than later.

We have some tough games to come, such as Enfield and Wingate, both of whom we have struggled to beat.

Dorking away in April will also be very difficult although home matches against Leatherhead, Whitehawk and Harlow should give us a chance.

I just hope it doesn’t come down to the last game of the season but it invariably does!

Everyone I've spoken to remains slightly optimistic but perhaps we have not got the team to make it this year.

THere's also the semi final of the Sussex Senior Cup to look forward to, which has now be rearranged for March 19 due to Brighton not being able to get a side together.

It does seem odd that a club that big is struggling and it does seem like they are being difficult.

But a lot of fans are not minding the rescheduling as it means the match is now at Nyewood Lane, which is a bonus for us.

Before then, though, we have two big matches in the league.

Kia looks to its electric future in Geneva with new four-door concept car KIA Motors Europe has unveiled new images of its bold new all-electric concept car, revealed at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show on 5th March.

“Automotive design is about capturing the heart and making it beat that bit faster for that bit longer. We believe that there’s absolutely no reason why that should change simply because the car is powered by electricity,” says Gregory Guillaume, Vice President of Design for Kia Motors Europe. “That’s why our all-electric concept is designed to not only get your pulse racing, but to also signpost our holistic and emotional approach to electrification.”

This human-centric attitude is perfectly aligned with Kia’s attitude on automotive design, as Guillaume explains: “When they talk about their electric cars, many carmakers promote the same empirical data-driven messages as they do with their internal combustion engined cars, such as range, economy and performance criteria.”

“Kia prides itself on its power to surprise, which is why we wanted to move away from

the rational and focus on the emotional, and embrace a warmer and more human approach to electrification. After all, electricity is found within every atom – it’s the energy that flows within us and around us on our planet. Harnessing its potential has propelled us from one innovation to the next,” says Guillaume.

A visual embodiment of its desire to move forward into the exciting world of electrification, this concept is the company’s first pure electric four-door passenger car.

Intentionally designed to not sit within the industry’s predefined vehicle categories, it coherently draws together elements of a muscular sports utility vehicle, a sleek and athletic family saloon and a versatile and spacious crossover.

Intelligently reinterpreting Kia’s iconic ‘tiger nose’ grille, the concept features a bold new illuminated ‘tiger mask’ that encircles the headlamp units to create a distinctive and recognizable lighting motif, one which instantly marks this out as a Kia for the 21st Century.

A single sheet of glass is used for both the windscreen and roof, flowing from the base of the A-pillar and over the cabin to create a vast sky-window, before tapering into a double-bubble over the rear passenger compartment. The rakishness of the car’s high shoulders and narrow glasshouse is further enhanced by an illustrated dynamic streak that draws the eye from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.

Guillaume and his team fully exploited the chassis architecture of the powertrain’s all-electric layout to maximise cabin space and create an airy and spacious interior. In a humorous riposte to the industry’s current

obsession with ever increasing dashboard screens, the concept features 21 individual ultra high-resolution screens. These curve their synchronised way across the top of the dashboard in a layout that’s at the same time both casual and coordinated.

“I believe that our unorthodox approach to electrification fired our collective imagination,” says Guillaume. “It enabled us to envisage a future where engaging and dynamic cars like this were an integral part of our transport requirements. And its message is clear,” says Guillaume “It’s time to free your imagination, to stop wondering and to start driving!”
