A FRESH bid is being made by a developer to build hundreds of homes in Pagham.

Hallam Land Management has submitted a new application for up to 300 dwellings on land at Hook Lane.

Its original proposal was rejected by Arun District Council three months ago because of safety concerns caused by vehicles from the development worsening traffic conditions on the surrounding roads.

Hallam has appealed against the decision. A government inspector is due to take charge of the public inquiry into the appeal on October 22.

But the company has separately made a renewed attempt for councillors to back its plans.

Hallam's planning agent has told Arun the scheme deserves to be approved in keeping with the three other major housing estates backed by its councillors recently.

Owen Jones, a director of LRM Planning Ltd, said in a letter to the council: "No evidence has been produced to justify why the proposed development at Hook Lane is in some way different such that planning permission can justifiably be refused.

"The highway mitigation measures are based on a cumulative assessment of traffic effects associated with 1,200 dwellings proposed at Pagham in the (Arun) local plan.

"These mitigation measures are to be provided jointly and separately by the development proposals at Pagham.

"It is important to recognise that the

council approved planning permission for three other planning applications at Pagham, totalling 745 dwellings, which are each based on the highway mitigation measures."

The latest application covers the construction of up to 300 new homes, a care home of up to 80 beds, a twoStandard plateformation size only form entry primary school, of vehicular accesses on to Hook Lane and Pagham Road and new pedestrian and cycle links. The site overs 17.5 hectares.

Pagham Parish Council's clerk, Nicola Swann, told its members on Tuesday the application seemed to be the same as the original plans.

Fines threat over estate parking ANGRY residents of a North Bersted housing estate who faced the sudden introduction of fines for parking close to their homes have been assured their fears have been heard.

One of them, Chris Roper, said residents received letters last Saturday threatening fines of £100 for people parking on pavements or grassed areas of Bersted Park that this was about to happen with effect from Monday and enforcement fines could be levied from May 1.

Signs confirming the move began appearing on lamp posts on roads close to Barton Primary School on Monday.

Mr Roper, who lives at Kelmscott Court, off Mackintosh Way, said: "When I bought my home three years ago, there was no mention of parking restrictions.

"There is one only space per property and for the 30 homes where I am, there are only two visitors' spaces.

"Most of the more recently built homes on the estate have two parking spaces each plus room for visitors so the new rules are not fair on us or our visitors. What about delivery drivers, people needing care or those who need vehicles for work?

"Most people have two cars but we all park so that we are not in the way of larger vehicles passing through. The situation is particularly difficult when parents are dropping or collecting children at the school.

"None of us can afford to pay fines," added Mr Roper.

An aspect of the situation which particularly upset him and fellow residents

was the lack of consultation.

But the owner of a number of homes on Bersted Park, including Mr Roper's flat, Southern Housing Group, has responded to the complaints.

In a statement, home and property services director south for Southern Housing, Sasha Harrison, said: “We recognise that parking on the estate is an issue that needs to be addressed.

"We’re sorry the decision to enforce the parking regulations was reached before our customers had the chance to have their say. We’ve contacted the managing agents for the rest of the estate to see if they can revisit the decision.”

Managing agents Hobdens said a consultation showed broad support for parking management on the estate. But the scheme had been on hold to ensure everyone could have their say.

Easter treats will see famous characters in the town centre ALICE in Wonderland is coming to a shopping venue in Bognor Regis.

The children's story character will grace The Arcade in the High Street with her presence from 10am-2pm on April 20 to create an Easter attraction.

She will be joined by The Queen of Hearts, The Mad Hatter and special white rabbit for some seasonal fun.

Alice will be giving away chocolate eggs and, instead of removing heads, The Queen of Hearts will be offering free face painting for all children.

Nick Yates, from the independent shops in The Arcade, said: "Easter is one of our favourite times of year as

everywhere is beginning to blossom.

"To celebrate, we decided to run an event especially for children and theme it to the ever-popular childhood tale of Alice in Wonderland.

"We look forward to entertaining as many people as possible."

The Mad Hatter will be accompanied by the jovial Easter bunny and the pair will be auditioning for trainee Easter bunnies.

Children can try on rabbit ears and practice hopping.

The winning cotton tail of the day will receive a sweet-filled hamper, thanks to the Sweet Jar store in The Arcade.

Holly's maths skills sees her strike gold

The Year 11 student at Ormiston Six Villages Academy has qualified to take part in the next round of this year's intermediate maths individual challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust.

Her success saw her gain a gold award and become the best in the school in Elm Avenue at maths. She will be taking part in the intermediate pink kangaroo, as the latest stage is called, with its one-hour paper in which calculators are banned as she becomes part of a global community of maths students.

This is organised by Kangarou sans Frontieres, an organisation with the aim of promoting mathematics among young people around the world.

More than six million school pupils aged five to 18 from more than

50 countries take part at various stages every year.

A typical question from last year's paper asks: Marta has collected 42 apples, 60 apricots and 90 cherries. She wants to divide them into identical piles using all of the fruit and then give a pile to some of her friends. What is the largest number of piles she can make? (The answer is given at the foot of this article).

As well as Holly, the academy has been celebrating its school in another maths competition.

The school, which is sponsored by Ormiston Academies Trust, saw four of its budding mathematicians gain seventh place out of 24 schools in the latest UK Mathematics Trust's team challenge for students in Years 8 and 9.

Sky Chu and Lauren Coyne, in Year 8, and Alice Feest and James Scragg, in Year 9, visited Lancing College to compete

against teams from across Sussex.

They worked individually, in pairs or as a team across four rounds of mathematics challenges.

Jonathan Campbell, the academy's head of maths, said: "Our skilled mathematicians rose to the challenge of competing, and did fantastically well, finishing in seventh place.

"With 24 teams competing, which included students from a range of schools, our aspirations were to finish in the top half. This is the best result in the three years I have been here and the students should be incredibly proud of achieving this."

Question answer: If the fruit in each pile is to be identical, then the number of piles must be a factor of 42, 60 and 90. The highest common factor of these numbers is 6, to make this the largest number of piles possible.

ENTERPRISING Year 9 students from Felpham Community College who came up with ideas to boost a top football club have won through to the national finals of a competition After winning through a first round and a regional competition, Rudy Garrigoux, Chloe Juniper, Tiffany Millis and Jessica Stemp went to the finals of the Premier League Enterprise Challenge, held in London on March 18.

Their efforts began last November when they first presented the results of their ideas on how Brighton and Hove Albion could encourage more young people, aged 18-23, to go to football matches at the stadium.

The team came up with the idea of an event on the beach, for 1,000 people, with music and food outlets, a chance to train with/meet the players and a loyalty card which would give them discounts or free tickets for matches by collecting loyalty stamps.

Following that success, the Felpham four spent December and January researching and developing their business plan ready for the regional finals where they represented the Brighton club against student teams representing Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham and Southampton football clubs.

Queens Park Rangers, Swansea, Newcastle United and Stoke City – the eventual winners.

The panel of judges who gave the students a thorough grilling included Theo Paphitis, from television’s Dragon’s Den. College careers leader Gill Woodman said: “The students worked incredibly hard with the competition, right from their first ideas back at the beginning of the academic year, through to developing these ideas into a competent and professional business plan and presentation and going on to adapt this further for the regional and then the national finals.

“The competition was high, Out of over 12,000 students who entered, our winning team made it through to the final 25.

“Everyone who took part was extremely professional. Our team were driven, the questions they were asked in the finals were really difficult, and they did an outstanding job and we are really proud of them.”

The students said: “Taking part in the finals was really exciting and nerve-wracking.

"We continued to develop and go over our presentation after the regional finals and we all felt well prepared, but they were still scary as the judges asked us lots of questions."

` Easter holiday fun FUN for all the family is available at Aldingbourne Country Centre during Easter.

The holiday activities begin next Monday with an assault course and continue on Tuesday with a splash about session followed by a falconry display on Wednesday.

Bouncing fun will be available next Thursday, with the chance to delight at some reptiles next Friday.

All events take place from 10am4pm at the centre north of the A27.

A family day pass for up to four people is £24 to help the centre's operator, the Aldingbourne Trust, fund its work with adults with learning difficulties.

The coldest day recorded by resident Andrew Goodwill on his personal weather station was 0.8C on March 26 compared to -4.4C the previous year.

Just 4mm of rain fell against 18.3mm in the prior year. The warmest day, though, at 19.1C on March 24 only just topped the 19C enjoyed 12 months earlier.

Andrew Britton, 54, was last seen on March 19 at the town's railway station but Sussex Police said he had safely returned home last Saturday.

Protests over parking fears SCORES of residents have objected to plans to replace a house in Bognor Regis with 22 flats.

The protests have mainly come from residents who live around the site at 26 Burnham Avenue.

Chris Brian has asked Arun District Council to approve his outline proposal to demolish the large house of four bedrooms on the site with two three-bed apartments, 18 two-bed apartments and two onebed apartments. No parking spaces will be provided.

But more than 70 letters of objection to the scheme on the plot of 1,378sq m had been received by Arun by yesterday morning.

Among those who have protested is Roger Horlock, of Burnham Avenue. He told the district council: "As recently as March 7, I had to send an email with a photograph to Bognor police about dangerous parking on the corner of Sturges Road and Burnham Avenue.

"A further block of flats with no parking facilities provided will only further exacerbate the problem absolute madness!

"I have lived in Burnham Avenue for the past 23 years and the problems with regard to dangerous driving (fast rat run) and the nearest free parking to the railway station and the town centre has become unsustainable over the years.

"Added to this, the aesthetics of a building that will be totally out of context with all the other residential properties is totally unacceptable!"

Pamela Wakeling said to the council she objected to the application for several reasons. They included: "The density and overcrowding of proposed properties on the site, one house occupied by a single family is being replaced with 22 dwellings; "No provision for parking, Burnham Avenue already suffers with over parking as the road is frequently used by commuters using the station and town workers, severely limiting the available space for on street parking for residents.

"The proposed development would provisionally add another 22 cars (or more as two-bedroom properties may well have more than one car)."

One of the residents in neighbouring Burnham Gardens, Claire Brown, wrote to Arun: "Parking in Burnham Gardens and Burnham Avenue is already a problem.

"We always find it difficult driving out of our cul de sac on to Burnham Avenue.

"There are so many cars parked on both sides of the road, that it's usually impossible to see oncoming traffic.

"On many occasions when edging out on to Burnham Avenue, we've had near misses with vehicles travelling along the road.

"As the proposed flats have no parking, where are these new residents going to leave their vehicles? "It is probably only a matter of time before a person or vehicle is involved in an accident."

Many objectors attended Bognor Regis Town Council on Tuesday to see its planning and licensing committee object to the proposals.

Helen fronts campaign to encourage others to swim FORMER competitive swimmer Helen Bull is urging other Bognor Regis residents to take to the pool to help their health.

She has given her support to a national campaign by Swim England to highlight the benefits of swimming.

Helen, 41, returned to the water after a diagnosis of cancer to help support her body through gruelling treatment.

She found swimming was the best form of pain management as well as maintaining her strength and fitness.

While she requires a wheelchair on land, in water, she has full mobility.

She teaches swimming at a local pool after she took voluntary redundancy from her role as a human resources manager six months ago.

She said: "I was thrilled to be asked to be part of the Love Swimming campaign and share my story.

"The benefits I have experienced from swimming are phenomenal. My life would be very different now if it wasn't for swimming.

"My thinking was that getting fit and active again would help me cope with the cancer treatment I was going through.

"Straight away, being back in the water helped me with the awful bone pain I was experiencing.

"But the biggest surprise of all was how it helped to lift my mood. I was sleeping better and I felt I was coping better with my treatment. I'd fallen in love with the water again."

The diagnosis has not quashed Helen's ambition as she takes on the Ironman swim in Chichester, a swim in Windermere and a 10k marathon swim before she completes her ultimate goal of swimming the English Channel.

Helen's story is part of a wider campaign launched by Swim England on Tuesday and their 12 partners ahead of World Health Day. The national governing body urged the medical profession to be more proactive in prescribing swimming as part of a programme of activity to manage medical conditions and aid recovery.

Evidence shows one in four patients would be more active if advised by a health professional. Yet nearly threequarters of GPs do not speak about the benefits of physical activity to patients due to either lack of knowledge, skills or confidence.

Elaine McNish, head of health and wellbeing at Swim England, said: "Swimming is an ideal activity which can help people manage a range of medical conditions.

"We are calling on the medical profession to consider recommending swimming to people who would benefit from improved physical health.

"To have the support of Helen, who has experienced the benefits swimming can have, is fantastic and I sincerely hope it inspires others to try swimming to people who would benefit from improved physical health."

BBC sitcom based in town to be screened PRIMETIME BBC2 audiences will be able to see Bognor Regis in all its sunny glory from next week.

A sitcom set in the town will premiere on the channel at 10pm next Tuesday after its cast and crew spent some two weeks filming scenes at various locations last autumn under endless blue skies.

Don't Forget The Driver is a six-part comedy and is the first piece of writing for television from Bafta winner Toby Jones and Obie Award play writer and Bognorian Tim Crouch.

Experienced screen actor Jones also stars as the main character, coach driver Peter Green, with a life of ordinary routine troubled by his disaffected daughter and ailing mum.

Overworked and overwhelmed, Peter is frustrated by the lack of support of his brother, Barry, also played by Jones, who has emigrated to Australia.

Jones took lessons in coach driving to show he could master the 49-seat vehicle from Bognor

Regis firm Woods Holidays, used for the sitcom's company, Bassetts.

He said: "You have to take your job very seriously. It's not something you can do lightly. That had an impact on the way we wrote and constructed the character.

"However serious or farcical the situation he gets into - he has to show up for work and he cannot be late. He has responsibilities."

Bognor Regis served as an example of the British people's attachment to the coastline as an island nation, said Jones.

"In the past, the King would come here but now there are brightly coloured funfair rides.

"It's still a fine town - although slightly depressed in places. But most of these seaside towns seem depressed when it's not sunny. There'a faded grandeur to Bognor."

The cast also includes Claire Rushbrook, Marcia Warren and Danny Kirrane.

PROPOSALS for temporary food and drink outlets along Bognor Regis seafront have been put forward by Arun District Council.

The council is seeking planning permission from itself to use three sites on the promenade for the portable structures.

They are east of Bognor Regis Pier, part of the promenade south of the Regis Centre and part of the promenade south-west of Butlin's.

Sloane & Brown, the council's planning agent, says in a statement: "The various spaces along the seafront are currently used as public, communal outdoor spaces for general relaxation and circulation.

"Some of the spaces have previously hosted short-term temporary food outlets.

"Examples of potential food and drink uses for the spaces could include pizza oven, ice cream, crepes and waffles, burgers and sausages, gin and prosecco, cakes and pastries, jacket potatoes, seafood, burritos, artisan street food etc.

"Other seaside uses could potentially include activities such as children's face painting, paddleboarding or other water-based water sports, or retail uses associated with the seaside.

"The proposed uses would generally be seasonal, particularly over the peak holiday season, and would be for limited periods of time."

Businesses to bar criminals REPEAT criminal offenders in Bognor Regis town centre will be banned from entering shops.

The new measure has been brought in by the business crime reduction partnership of the town's business improvement district.

The exclusion scheme is one of the first measures from the partnership since it became fully operational.

It will ban repeat offenders from entering the shop or business premises within the town of the partnership's members for at least three months.

Using information reported by businesses through the DISC system for recording and reporting crime and antisocial behaviour, the partnership will be issuing exclusion notices to anyone with more than two business-related offences.

These will include theft, attempted theft and deception.

DISC, which stands for database and intranet for safer communities, is a website and app-based system through which partnership members can report incidents directly to the police.

Mark Hall, a director of Bognor Regis business improvement district and the partnership's co-ordinator, said: "I'm really pleased we have set up the partnership under our welcoming town centre objective.

"We have a good working partnership with Sussex Police and an information sharing agreement in place with them.

"We are all working together to make Bognor Regis a safe and welcoming town centre to visit."

There are more than 140 DISC schemes

around the country, which cover 260-plus town and city centres.

The partnership connects all the current initiatives - shop radio scheme, DISC crime reporting system - and the new exclusion scheme in one clearly defined data protection compliant network.

The key roles of the partnership are managing daily reports made by members, operating the exclusion scheme and working in partnership with other agencies.

This week makes the first anniversary of the launch of the business improvement district in the town.

It came into effect, through a levy on eligible businesses' rateable values, after a vote in 2017 in favour of it being set up.

The district broadly stretches from the Royal Norfolk Hotel across to Butlin's and north to the University of Chichester.

The business crime reduction partnership operates within the structure of the improvement district. It replaces the shop watch scheme.

Partnership members in Bognor Regis include Boots, Wilko, Morrisons, Superdrug and Mountain Warehouse.

All the members will be displaying the partnership logo at their main entrances.

Information which updates businesses about the identities of those who have been issued with exclusion notices is instantly communicated through DISC. Businesses who wish to sign up should email Mark Halls of Chris Heaps at: bcrp@brbid.org Membership is not open to the general public.

Councillors back critics of the proposal for a new look A29 SENIOR parish councillor Brian Knight has criticised the decision to cut the new A29 short through Shripney.

Cllr Knight, chairman of Bersted Parish Council, said he supported the campaign by residents for the re-aligned road to be extended to the A259 at the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars roundabout.

"We want to voice our opinion that to bring the road back into Shripney village is absolutely baffling.

"You will have a nice road coming straight into a bottleneck and causing damage to the village of Shripney.

"Over the next few months, we will

be fighting this and seeing what we can do," he told the Bersted annual electors' meeting last week.

Parish council planning chairman Cllr Gill Yeates said the A29's section through Shripney would be stuck in the middle between two new roads.

"This situation is not good enough for our residents. This road is a ridiculous situation.

"People can still take part in the consultation about the re-alignment and make their opinions known."

The consultation about the 4km new section of road lasts until April 26.

Charity's fans are keen to stay No 1 TOP fundraisers in Bognor Regis want to keep their position as a charity's leading money-makers.

Members of the town's Royal Air Forces Association branch held their latest Brew for the Tea morning last week.

This raises money for the national association's fund, the Wings Appeal, to support past, present and future air forces personnel.

Last Wednesday's morning raised some £400 for the appeal after about 100 people went along to enjoy the fun at the RAFA Club in Waterloo Square.

Marion Mewett, the branch's Wings Appeal main fundraiser, said: "We were the best branch in the region last year for supporting the Wings Appeal by raising more than £17,000.

"The region stretches from Grimsby to Southampton, so it is a large area, and being the best in it is something to be proud of.

"We want this year to be as good or

even better and we hold Brew for the Few occasions about every three months."

The mornings usually contain entertainment, such as the RAFA Skiffle Band last week, and a raffle with a mass of donated prizes.

The latest event also included a popular competition to guess the name of a toy bear.

It is named after The Few nickname given to Battle of Britain pilots but is open to everyone who wants to support the RAF. Mrs Mewett is supported by five key members and up to 20 members at the Goodwood Revival each autumn.

Their presence helps to bring in around £10,000 to make it the branch's main fundraiser.

Activities like Brew for the Few also bring members into the club during the daytime as well as its evening timetable.

Monthly talks with guest speakers and lunches are held every month.

A packed hall joined in the fun at the latest Reel Tartan event at Eastergate Village Hall to help the charity and its work with adults with learning difficulties.

Several members of its community joined the event. The result of the night of revelry was a £180 cheque which the organiser, Polly Meynell, handed over to the trust last week.

She stages the event each year to help a charity in the area - and she chose the trust for 2019.

"It was a wonderful evening of live music, dance and fantastic food," she said.

"All guests came wearing tartans and were treated to a feast of Celticthemed foods from all around the British Isles courtesy of Mark Dunne Chefs on the Move.

"The Causeway Celidh band, a local band from Midhurst, played to a packed hall.

"By the end of the evening, they were calling some of their most challenging routines which, to their delight, were enthusiastically and expertly followed."

TWO young sopranos will be making return appearances at tomorrow's concert at Bognor Regis Music Club.

Tina Gelnere and Olivia Moss will be accompanied by the club's chairman, Chris Coote, for their appearance.

Chris said: "We are delighted to welcome Tina and Olivia back to the club.

"They have both been blessed with outstanding voices and it has been exciting to see them progress in their professional careers."

Latvian mezzo-sopranoTina graduated from the University of Chichester in 2014.

'Ale and hearty event puts town on the map for drinking festivals CHEERS and beers filled a Bognor Regis venue for the first festival of its kind in the town.

The initial Bognor Beer Fest attracted a sell-out attendance on Saturday night.

The turnout of 130 people who went along to sample the 32 cask ales present delighted organisers, Jason Dalton, Darren Judd and Jamie Boyle.

Similarly encouraging numbers of enthusiastic beer lovers saw the opening session at the Gordon Centre in Canada Grove last Friday lunchtime pull in 80 drinkers followed by 115 in the evening.

Saturday lunchtime saw 90 tickets sold, while Sunday was a free occasion to drink up the remaining ales.

Darren said: "The event has exceeded our expectations. It has been so well supported we sold out of one of our cask ales on the first night and two ciders as well.

"We ordered in 2,160 pints and a barrel holds 72 pints so that shows you how popular the beer fest has been.

"We've had someone here from America, from Africa and from Australia as well as a lot of people from the surrounding area. Bognor has not got a history of ales and festivals but this has been a huge success."

Among those who decided to sample the brews on Saturday afternoon was Mark Pritchard, 29, of Streatham, in south London.

He came down a day early for Mother's Day to his parents in Barnham to join his dad and a friend at the beer fest.

He said: "My impression of this event is a good one. They have got a good selection of beers.

"It's nice to see some of the breweries I've not heard of and get the chance to sample their beers.

"I like my beers and, living in London, I'm spoilt for choice. There are a lot of craft breweries popping up all over the place.

"I'd certainly come back next year if they hold this event again but I would like to see more information about the breweries in the programme.

"It would be good to try some stouts and some obscure beers which have been produced as trials by the breweries. But, all round, this has been a positive occasion."

Chichester resident Keith Budd, 55, was another supping the brews on offer.

He said: "I go to quite a lot of beer festivals because I have been a real ale drinker for many years.

"It's nice to go to events like this, especially as this is the first one. I thought I definitely should support it.

"It's been very good. Events like this need to start small and grow and, for the first one, this has been very good.

"Coming to things like this gives you the chance to try stuff you wouldn't normally drink. This is also a nice place to hold it in."

The beer list included Pride of the Valley from the Itchen Valley Brewery in Hampshire, FFF's Moondance, Best Bitter from Long Man Brewery, near Eastbourne, and Smash from Hassocks' Bedlam Brewery.

Their strength ranged from 2.9 per cent alcohol to six per cent.

A further ten ciders were also available at strengths up to 7.2 per cent.

The idea for the festival arose from the success of The Dog & Duck micropub in Norfolk Street, Bognor Regis, opened by Jason, Darren and Jamie last June.

Darren said: "Bognor Regis has never had a beer festival before and we thought now might be a good time to hold one.

"It would get more interest in the town and would be a good thing, as well as helping the Dog & Duck.

"We hope it will become an annual event and are likely to hold it on the same weekend next year."

It took Jamie six months to organise the festival. "I had to talk to all the different breweries and it was quite hard to choose the beers.

"We have been quite lucky to be able to use these premises. They have been very welcoming to us and it is a great location."

Jason said the business at their pub had begun to pick up after a quiet start to the year.

"All of a sudden it has started to become busy. We are also becoming busy in midweek, which is good.

"There are a lot of pubs closing down. It is a tough market but we are unique as a micropub - with no music, no TV and no gaming machines.

"We only have a capacity of 30 and we would like to expand."

` Proposal for hall WORK is being considered by Bersted Parish Council to extend its popular hall.

The council's members are considering adding to the facilities at Bersted Jubilee Hall.

A scheme which the council's chairman, Cllr Brian Knight, said could cost up to £100,000 was being looked at extend the meeting room.

This was built three years ago in the first major improvement to the building, off Chalcraft Lane, since it was opened in 1985. But the space has proved so popular it is fully booked along with the main hall.

Grants from various bodies are being considered to help to meet the cost.

Cllr Keir Greenway, chairman of its finance and general purposes committee, said: "We are thinking of extending the meeting room into a second hall so we can serve new groups. That is something we are looking into."

The parish council is also set to spend £40,000 on a new roof for the building.

` Hunt at museum CHILDREN can discover more than just about the past at Bognor Regis Museum this Easter.

The visitor attraction in West Street is holding its fifth Easter egg hunt from 10am-4pm daily between April 16 and April 22.

Children aged 10 and under can claim a treat if they find all the eggs which have been hidden among the many displays which showcase the town's past.

Brexit prayers at churches

DOZENS of people went along to the oldest church in Bognor Regis to talk about the latest political events.

The weekly tea and prayer gettogether at St Mary Magdelene Church focused for the first time on a specific topic last Saturday.

The chance to discuss Brexit - and a host of other subjects - drew well over 50 people to the two-hour session.

This compares to an average attendance of 30 since the events were begun by the church's vicar, the Rev Tim Crook, seven years ago.

He said: "When there has been a time of national crisis in the past, the Archbishops have called the nation to prayer.

"We feel a bit uncomfortable doing that nowadays but, when I heard that the Archbishops had suggested churches offer tea and the chance to pray, I felt it was the right thing for us to do because this is perceived to be a time of crisis.

"There has been great uncertainty about what would happen on March 29 but, as it got closer, it seemed even more important to give people the opportunity to say a prayer about it."

Information from the Church of England at the session called on people to stop defining others on their Brexit stance and to come together to serve the common good.

Bognor Regis resident Sandy Wilkinson was a newcomer to the event.

Sandy, who is in her early 50s, said: "This is a chance to bring people together and to talk to them whatever their political persuasions.

"We have talked about Brexit and a whole range of other subjects as well.

"I've been here about an hour. I might well come again. People here are very friendly."

Karen Buckley, of Felpham, has gone regularly to the Bersted Street church on Saturdays for five years.

Aged in her early 60s, he said: "It's good to meet people and to talk to them, especially those you would not normally meet because you can become a bit insular otherwise.

"It's a part of the church to welcome everyone and there are people here who hardly get out of their homes otherwise."

The Methodist churches in Bognor Regis and Felpham also opened their doors last Thursday and Friday lunchtimes respectively to enable people to have the chance to reflect about Brexit.

The minister, the Rev Dan Balsdon, said a few people had gone along to the Bognor Regis church after the event had been hastily organised in response to the recent political events.

"We are doing this because Brexit has been an issue which has divided some communities and families," he said.

"We wanted to create a neutral space for reflection and prayer. We are not looking for answers or arguments about what is right or wrong.

"I think the majority of people would agree that, whatever their view happens to be, we are all looking for a better society and peace and justice in one form or another."

The prayer tables at the church, in Waterloo Square, featured a prayer for Britain. This called on those present to pray for wisdom and vision for political leaders and to show love to their neighbours.

College merges with Worthing

Cheque donation for Sage House A DEMENTIA charity has received a cheque for over £100 from a retirement living company.

Churchill Retirement Living has welcomed its first owners at Harington Lodge in Chichester and the Churchill Foundation, presented a cheque for £1,000 to local charity Dementia Support for their dementia services based in Sage House, Tangmere.

Dementia Support was put forward

by Harington Lodge owners and sales executive Karen Hills to receive the donation, through the Churchill Foundation’s small grants programme.

Receiving the cheque last month, Dementia Support’s community events and fundraising lead, Natalie Burchett,said: "We’re extremely grateful to the Churchill Foundation and the owners at Harington Lodge for this very generous donation.

CHICHESTER College Group and Worthing College have formally merged, in a move intended to bring significant benefits to the region.

CHICHESTER’S Oakwood School is celebrating another year of top results for its Year 6 pupils who have all gained entry to their chosen senior school next year.

THe outstanding results also mean that a fantastic 13 scholarships have been awarded to pupils across the curriculum, including academic, art, sport and music subjects.

` Bognor Road fire FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze at a single-storey building in Bognor Road, Chichester, at 8.40pm on Wednesday night.

Two engines and a support unit was sent to the scene.

Crews tackled a fire in the ground floor of the building, which was extinguished using four breathing apparatus, two high pressure hose reels, a covering jet, a safety jet and a hydrant.

Crews then damped down the area, and left at 11.30pm.

Tech bills and automation ROBOTIC automation and artificial intelligence sound like subjects for one of the more complicated episodes of Doctor Who – not a county council.

But West Sussex is looking into how to use the futuristic-sounding technology to improve the way its services are delivered to customers, and even predict what those customers want.

Officers are at the very early stage of working out what is and isn’t possible.

At a meeting of the performance and finance committee, members were told that council and business technology experts Capita were ‘investigating the use of new technology solutions such as robotic automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to make service delivery more effective and efficient’.

A council spokesman said: “We are in the early stages of investigating what is possible and what other organisations are doing in an increasingly digital world.

“Our emerging IT strategy was used as the source to identify some of these technologies and to highlight those that might be of greatest benefit in the future.

“Consequently, the council is keeping track of a wide range of innovative technology that can be used to simplify and speed up customer transactions.

“Other organisations have used software robots to perform high volume, time consuming, manual data entry work or used artificial intelligence

to predict what customers want to apply for or to tell them how to get to the right service or right place for assistance quicker.

“THis will help us improve efficiency and make sure we target our resources more effectively.”

A whopping tech bill is also heading towards the county council as it prepares to replace 5,700 computers.

THe cost of buying new laptop and desktop systems with extended fiveyear warranties and ‘special security features’ will run to millions of pounds.

THe issue was raised during a discussion about cyber-security at a meeting of the regulation, audit and accounts committee on Monday, March 25.

Steve Waight (Con, Goring) pointed out that his ageing council computer, which was given to him in 2012, was still running on Windows 7, even though Microsoft had hailed Windows 10 as its ‘most secure software’.

THe meeting was told that all of the council’s devices had to be

using Windows 10 by early January 2020, after which Microsoft would no longer provide security updates for Windows 7.

Roland Mezulis, chief information officer, said the upgrade was being tested on a pilot group to ensure ‘that the things that need to work with it actually work’.

A spokesman said: “THe council plans in the long term to equip its workforce with appropriate digital technology.

“Where possible, equipment is acquired with a five-year warranty included in the price.

“THis means that we expect to replace a user’s computer once every five years and we plan our funding to achieve that.

Filmed with help of Chichester Free School, the video uses 100 kilograms of textiles – the amount wasted every five minutes in the county – to recreate a recycling logo.

Filmed from the sky using drone technology, the film hopes to encourage people to repair, reuse, or recycle instead of throwing textiles away.

Steve Read, West Sussex County Council’s director of energy, waste and environment, said: “West Sussex residents threw away nearly 11,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes, towels, blankets or sheets into the general rubbish last year.

“Most of these items could have been saved from the general rubbish by repairing them, using them for a different purpose, or recycling them.

“Disposing of this amount of textiles

cost the county council a staggering £1.7 million last year alone.”

THe West Sussex Waste Partnership has been running a campaign called Tackling Textiles to try to change the situation.

THe campaign has been showing people how to rescue, repair, alter, and make use of textiles to avoid them ending up in the bin.

Mr Read added: “In the video, we asked the students of Chichester Free School what they think recycling is, where recycling goes and how they feel when they recycle.

“I’m really impressed with how much knowledge these young recyclers and future environmental leaders have. I hope this can encourage more residents to repair, reuse and recycle their textiles.”

Patients discharged earlier from hospital with new plans

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE THAN 1,200 more inpatients left Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester in the morning over the last 12 months, thanks to a major improvement project piloted on 14 medical wards.

In addition to helping patients return home earlier in the day, the pilot wards at Western Sussex Hospitals have also admitted a higher number of patients this year – on average, around 13 more a week.

Chief operating officer Jayne Black said: "Our early discharge improvement project is about doing what’s best for patients, both those ready to leave hospital, as well as others in need of a

ward bed.

"We know patients prefer to be discharged in the morning, which means they can benefit from better community, social and primary care services available during the day.

"It also means more patients can be admitted sooner onto wards, so they too can benefit from our specialist consultant, therapeutic and diagnostic support services."

THis winter, the early discharge improvement project has helped the trust care for an unprecedented number of patients while, at the same time, reducing reliance on agency staff.

Since April 1, 2018, 60,000 patients have required emergency admission onto wards at St Richard’s and Worthing hospitals - an increase of 6.4 per cent on the year before.

High demand usually forces hospitals to open more beds, which not only places a greater burden on staff but costs much more as expensive agency personnel are hired to provide extra cover.

However, despite admitting more patients than ever before over the past 12 months, the trust opened fewer beds and reduced agency spend by £1.8m.

THis was only possible because of the early discharge project and the trust’s other 'patient first' innovations, such as expanded ambulatory care areas, introduced through this year’s winter planning.

Over the past year, 45 per cent of patients from these wards were discharged before 3pm – up from only 30 per cent the year before. A further 18 wards are now signing up to the improvement project.

CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan and Arun and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb have welcomed Business2Schools, to Chichester’s Bishop Luffa School.

Business2Schools was established to connect businesses such as Jaguar Land Rover, Tesco and several city financial firms with schools so that pupils can benefit from both cutting edge technology and high-quality furniture.

THe programme has resulted in thousands of pounds of furniture and equipment, including state of the art computers – surplus to requirements for businesses, but still fullyfunctional and way beyond the reach of a normal school IT budget – being given to schools in the Chichester, Bognor Regis, Kent and Watford areas.

Business2Schools plans to expand the programme across the UK creating new opportunities for both schools and businesses.

Lindsey Parslow founder of Business2Schools, commented: "We hope to create an ethical and environmental solution to the way companies in the UK replenish, refurbish or relocate their offices.

THe programme aims to help businesses and schools collaborate in a sustainable way that has the added benefit of improving the level of infrastructure in schools

Sir, I see Arun District Council are up to their usual standards, blaming everyone else for their mess.

I refer to the toilets recently built on the seafront. They surely picked the design, awarded the contract and should surely have had a clerk of works or someone watching construction to make sure it was done properly.

It seems planning is not something they do well. A toilet block is not a major project.

This same council is planning 3,000 new homes off Chalcraft Lane and another 1,000 in Pagham.

They couldn’t foresee problems with a toilet block smaller than my home.

They have been told by many residents and groups of the problems that will happen if they proceed yet they just ignore it. This is a little bigger than the toilet block.

So I urge residents when they vote in May to be aware of the gridlock, flooding, lack of infrastructure to cope, and loss of beautiful fields and countryside and food it produces which is coming our way if we elect a council that is not able to build a block of toilets.

More helpers at hospital sought THE chance to make a difference to patients at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester is being offered by its supporters' organisation.

The Friends of St Richard's has vacancies for helpers to join the volunteer team operating the popular shop and trolley, serving patients, staff and visitors.

Jane Ramage, of the friends, said: "It's a genuinely friendly group of people who give their time to support our local hospital and the contribution they make

to St Richard's is amazing.

"For instance, it really makes a difference for patients on a daily basis when the trolley comes round with newspapers and a host of useful items, pushed by a volunteer with a moment or two to chat. Our shop volunteers are happy to help customers find what they want.

"For volunteers, it's a rewarding way to give something back to the community - and even more rewarding is the fact that every pound of profit is spent on

equipment for our hospital."

Regular and relief helpers are needed, especially on Wednesdays.

Three three-hour shifts operate on weekdays for the shop while the trolley is taken round daily by pairs of volunteers over two shifts of two and a half hours during mornings.

Duties include handling money, sorting orders and shelf-filling - all with a smile.

Stroll around the recreated Roman gardens – the earliest gardens found anywhere in the country – and enjoy the largest collection of mosaics in situ in the UK. WITH some 60,000 bulbs ready to burst into colourful bloom, this year’s Tulip Festival at Arundel Castle is likely to confirm it as one of the top similar events in the country.

THe opening date for the monthlong festival depends on the weather but things are looking good for a midApril start to the fabulous co-ordinated displays.

Among the 120 named tulips on display, visitors can delight in Olympic Flame, Lilac Time, Swan Wings, Fancy Frills, Apeldoorn’s Elite, Black Parrot and Negrita, plus the beautiful peonyflowered Angelique.

Planted in an array of special horticultural designs, throughout the Collector Earl’s Garden 4,000 Pink Impression and Purple Prince tulips will be on show. Nearby, in the Wild Flower Garden, by the Stumpery, there will soon be a display of more than 8,000 mixed tulips.

Entry to the gardens with the stunning spring blooms is included in the usual entry price to the castle.

And if your green-fingered interests extend to a wider range of flowers, don’t miss the plant fair in the castle’s grounds on April 28.

Last year, queues of gardeners anxious to get in to the lower grounds for the event extended into High Street.

THis year, more than 20 specialist nurseries will be exhibiting and selling a wide range of locally grown, good quality, interesting, and, often unusual, plants, bulbs and shrubs.

Standard admission tickets include entry to the Plant Fair or tickets just for the fair can be bought, although those are not valid for the gardens or castle.

With its centuries of history, Arundel Castle is a fantastic backdrop to learn more about the past and Easter weekend will feature the life at the time of the Crusades when Christian forces from Europe united to fight against Moslems in the Holy Land.

THe scene is the year 1189 and Richard the Lionheart, King of England, prepares to set off on the THird Crusade and the castle is the scene for these preparations.

A 12th century encampment is the wonderful setting for demonstrations of armour, combat, archery and falconry throughout the day from 10am-4.30pm.

Crafts include making mail armour, leather working, scribing and cooking.

THe route to Puck Lane and Nore Hill Folly of 3.75 miles can easily be extended to 5, 7, or 10 miles, depending on your energy.

Slindon is THe National Trust's largest traditional estate on the South Downs.

THis walk around Nore Hill Folly from THe George at Eartham is perfect for

warm days any time of the year as it's shaded by trees and there is a superb show of bluebells here from mid-April.

On the way into the woods you’ll pass the octagonal pumphouse that once brought water to the estate and at the edge of the woods is Nore Hill Folly, a mock castle gatehouse built in 1814. THe nearby Roman road of Stane Street is also an interesting walking route.

THe George itself isn't too hard to find, being just off the busy A27 between Chichester and Fontwell but once inside its doors you are a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

It is a quintessentially English pub serving good honest food. With its breathtaking setting in the South Downs national park, it is a sanctuary for peace and tranquillity: somewhere to indulge yourself in an unspoilt environment.

Since taking over in 2013, owners Anita and James have done everything they can to create an “experience” which is both truly satisfying and distinctively English.

THe 170-year-old free house has been sensitively refurbished to retain the character of the building while incorporating modern facilities.

Yet, don't think tradition has to mean rustic food, the menu is sophisticated but hearty. As much as possible, everything is sourced locally - meat, fish and vegetables - and where more exotic ingredients are needed these come from Commonwealth countries.

THe best of British ethos continues with the alcohol choices too as all the ale and beer is from English breweries.

THere is an impressive range of British classic dishes on the menu - no pizza or pasta here - and the weekly pie night is popular with many regulars. Puddings are traditional favourites too.

With longer days and warmer weather, the 40-acre downland site north of Chichester is open daily from 10.30am to 6pm, and from April 8-22 there is the chance for visitors to try crafts and traditional games or just admire its animals, including heavy horses, Southdown lambs and sheep and working oxen.

Demonstrations of how people in the past celebrated Easter will be the focus of events from Good Friday, April 19, to Easter Monday, April 22, when there will be

a different programme of events on each day.

THe museum's most recent re-erected building, the bakehouse from Newdigate, will be put into use for baking Hot Cross Buns, which visitors can taste, and the much older Tudor kitchen of Winkhurst will host demonstrations of cooking food from that era.

THroughout the museum, its knowledgeable and friendly volunteers will be providing short talks on various aspects of how the festival was marked through the ages.

For children, activities will include decorating eggs, a trail to follow and face painting.

On Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, a Tudor-style market will be held around the museum's central square. Here, visitors will find pies made in a portable oven, ballad selling, hawkers of kitchen supplies, glass, second-hand shoes, rush mats and just about anything anyone could buy, plus wandering traders and stalls under the market hall.

As well as crafts, entertainment for children includes Punch and Judy performances, a magic show and balloon modelling plus circus skills, including juggling, diabalo and plate spinning.

Again, there will be talks about different aspects of how people lived in days gone by, illustrated by the backdrop of the 50-plus genuine re-erected buildings, such as the watermill, next to which is the pond with its ducks and, possibly, some ducklings eagerly waiting to be fed by visitors.

8-22 APRIL

Come and try craft activities and play traditional games. See heavy horses, Southdown lambs, Saddleback pigs, our working oxen and other traditional farm animals.

Easter Weekend from Good Friday – Easter Monday you can experience traditional Easter preparations and celebrations starting with our Good Friday Bake and a Tudor market.

There will also be egg painting, bonnet making, an Easter egg trail and an Easter bonnet parade in the Market Square on Easter Monday.

Easter Sunday will have a similar programme of indoor and outdoor attractions for all the family.

THroughout the weekend, donkeys will be on the site, close to the Gateway building which houses the entrance gallery, shop and museum's Waterside cafe with its balconies overlooking the pond.

Highlight of Easter Monday will be a bonnet parade at 2.30pm for children who have created their finery earlier in the day. THe parade will be accompaneid by King Henry's Duo, which will be playing at other times too.

As with the other days, there will be Easter baking, talks, a tour of some of the museum's artefacts not usually seen in the basement of the Gridshell building and a last chance to visit the temporary exhibition of Roger Champion's furniture.

All the buildings on the site will be open, offering a glimpse into how our rural ancestors lived and worked over the past 1,000 years, including tradesmen’s workshops, a church and a market hall, and homes dating from medieval times. THere is also a working woodyard, gardens are being cultivated and a sculpture trail among trees can be followed.

THe waterside cafe is open throughout the year and dogs on leads are welcome at the museum, which has free parking.

is running a temporary exhibition at the museum between Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, May 12.

Although the 1969 air race was divided into a number of categories, the museum has decided to focus the exhibition on the subsonic jet category and in particular the performance of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR1 aircraft, then new to the RAF. Two Harriers took part in the race and the museum is proud to own one of them, XV744.

In addition to information display boards about the race, there will be models, colouring for children and a film which the museum has produced using footage of the Harriers in the race flown by Tom Lecky-THompson and Graham Williams. Tom and Graham (subject to confirmation) will open the exhibition on Easter Saturday.

Entry to the museum is included in the normal entry prices.

We spoke to Stephanie from Stagecoach Performing Arts Chichester about what they have to offer.

Why is the theatre so important to all ages?

THeatre is not just a place for people to be entertained or for performers to put on shows.

It's an experience for all involved.

And for the performers it can be a lifechanging experience. It can be a way to let your real self shine through even if you are acting as someone completely different on stage.

THe response you receive from the audience is also a great buzz for any performer. And it doesn't matter how old or young you are, you will still enjoy the applause.

Theatre is not just  a place for people to be entertained or for performers to put on shows. It's an experience for all involved.

What can children gain from being introduced to the theatre at a young age as opposed to waiting until they are older?

It's a great way for them to learn the basics of performing, so much so that when they are older these become natural to them. THeir confidence also grows from the moment they start performing and it's great to see that develop the older they get.

Of course, it doesn't matter what age you enter the theatre but those who start when they're younger are able to develop important skills early on.

What ages do you offer classes to?

THere are two stages we offer classes for. THe Early Stages are for ages 4-6, and the Main Stages are for those aged 6-18.

Stagecoach covers a range of theatrical skills. What exactly are these?

We cover the three main skills of theatre with singing, dancing and acting lessons.

How can these skills help children in everyday life as well as shaping who they will become in the future?

Even if our children don't want to pursue a career in the theatre the skills that they learn with us are great for them as people.

Performing will greatly boost their confidence in every kind of situation, from meeting new people, to starting new jobs and just having the confidence to be themselves.

Are these skills put to use in shows for parents to watch?

museum. Amberley is home to the only traditional working print shop in the south of England, where you can have a go at printing your own souvenir certificate to take home. Also, on the Wednesday, you can have a go at wood turning in the wood turners’ workshop. Children will be supervised by skilled volunteers to have a go at turning out small wooden ornaments. THe museum has resident potters on site, where children can have a go with their play with clay activities.

Where most activities are included in the admission price, there may be some small fees for some special activities, and donations are always welcome.

On a visit to the Worthing restaurant, on a chilly, weekday evening, I and my guest were expecting a quiet dining experience but the vibrant restaurant was still busy.

An extensive menu has a wide range of offerings from the traditional pizzas and pasta dishes alongside a range of chicken, fish and steaks.

An added traditional and cosy touch, a waiter explained that some of the dishes are named after the proprietor's family members, from whom he inherited the recipes.

My choice was the penne alla Alfonsina with chicken and peppercorn sauce which was absolutely delicious. THe sauce was rich in flavour

and the chicken was cooked to perfection.

My companion chose the pan-fried sea bass and they commented that it was fresh, light and served with lightly charred, al dente Mediterranean vegetables.

For afters, we both couldn't help but try the white chocolate and pistachio ice cream which was created exclusively for La Campania by the Sussex Ice Cream Company. THe texture is rich and silky and it was simply the perfect end to our meal.

To keep things fresh, every dish is made to order and the menus are constantly changing. THe weekend menu boasts the likes of slow-roasted pork belly with sea salt crackling and red wine jus, and creamy seafood risotto with a subtle hint of tomato.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Tuesday, March 19 - The King was able in yesterday's more genial weather to spend over an hour and a half in the grounds of Craigweil House. This was the longest outing he has taken.

During most of the time, he remained in his bath chair and was wheeled about in the warm morning sunshine, but again he walked a short distance, and it is hoped gradually to increase this form of exercise.

It is understood that the King's general condition is still showing steady improvement.

The usual artificial sunlight treatment which the King is taking on alternate days was adminstered yesterday by Dr Woods, who travelled down from London for the purpose.

Wednesday, March 20 - Bognor had another afternoon of brilliant sunshine yesterday and the King was able to enjoy nearly two hours in the open air. During the greater part of the time, he was in his bath chair in the grounds of Craigweil House, but he walked a little before returning indoors.

Nurse Gordon, of St Thomas's Hospital, who has been in attendance on the King during his illness, left yesterday to go on leave, and before her departure received from his Majesty the medal of the Second Class of the Royal Red Cross. Only two nurses now remain at Craigweil House.

A SCAM BUSTING initiative has stopped more than £2.5m from being defrauded from Sussex residents in just 18 months.

Last month alone has prevented another £188,062 being stolen in the highest monthly total so far.

The telephone banking protocol is being piloted by Sussex Police with the co-operation of banks and their national body, UK Finance.

PC Bernadette Lawrie, the financial abuse safeguarding officer for Surrey and Sussex Police, said: "This initial pilot involves Lloyds, Santander, First Direct and the Co-op Bank, but with a view to it being spread both nationally and to the other financial institutions.

"Following a pilot phase, it is intended to extend the initiative to include Surrey Police and it has already been rolled out to Police Scotland."

In one of the latest incidents, an East Sussex man was saved from losing more than £23,000 in a share scam. He was persuaded the phone call he received was illegal after the bank promptly contacted Sussex Police when he tried to withdraw the money.

"The case shows that potential fraud victims will sometimes contact their banks by phone or online having been asked by cold callers to invest or withdraw funds," such a Sussex Police spokesman.

"But now the bank, if they have concerns about a customer's request to transfer monies and think it might relate to fraud or a scam, can contact the police and it will 'freeze' the funds for 72 hours while officers attempt to engage with the individual and find out if the transaction is fraudulent."

The protocol is based on the similar successful scheme, the banking protocol, in which counter staff spot and help vulnerable customers who go into branches to make suspicious withdrawals.

CHAINSAW artist Simon Groves has used his skills to bring art to a new estate in Felpham.

Simon has created eight sculptures at locations around Blakes Mead to create a Felpham Art Trail.

His creations include an animal tracks bench, a totem, a kingfisher, a tyger bench, a sycamore seed bench and agiant acorn.

The sculptures are being funded by developer contributions as part of the planning approval given

by Arun District Council for the housing.

Writing on social media, during his sculpting, Simon said: "I'm very much enjoying this project. Hope everyone likes what I have been up to."

He was commissioned to do the work by Arun District

SUSSEX Police are extremely concerned for the welfare of missing Yapton man Daniel Bocking.

Daniel, 33, pictured above, was last seen around 4.30pm on Wednesday at his home.

A police spokesman said: "He is dependent on medication and it is not believed he has taken any with him. Without this medication, Daniel can become confused by his surroundings."

BLUE plaques around Bognor Regis were among the subjects of an interesting talk to members of the town's University of the Third Age group.

One of the U3A members, and local historian, Sylvia Endacott, went into detail about her subject of words in stone and steel.

The Post Newspapers' columnist started her talk by describing the types of commemorative plaques, like that pictured below, that are located in the Bognor Regis area.

The first such scheme began in London in 1866 as the oldest in the world.The usual plaques to be seen are blue and are mainly located at locations where famous people have lived or visited.

Some examples are Bognor Regis are: • Tony Hancock - the comedy actor stayed at the Royal Norfolk Hotel on the seafront while he filmed The Punch and Judy Man in the town in the early 1960s • Sir Richard Hotham - the founder of Regency Bognor and the man whose vision led to the current seaside resort • William Blake - poet and painter who has two blue plaques.

One is located at Blakes Cottage in Felpham and the other is at The Fox pub in Felpham where he was involved in an infamous incident of treason Sylvia told about how the plaques were normally awarded either by national organisations or local authorities. However, applications can be made by local organisations or individuals to have a plaque. These latter types are brown.

The plaques normally state the issuing authority, name and dates of the individual concerned.

Some councils, however, like Aldwick, include full details of the reasons for the plaque.

One example of a local plaque is in Sea Road, Felpham, which remembers the crew of a Hampden bomber which is believed to have crashed nearby during the Second World War. Another plaque is located in a bus shelter in Nyetimber Lane, Aldwick, in respect of a RAF officer who was also killed during the conflict.

Applications have also been made for nine more plaques to be installed around Bognor Regis to help to make up a heritage trail.

Denis Lindsell, on behalf of the meeting, thanked Sylvia for her most interesting talk.

Another of Bognor Regis U3A's monthly meetings at St Mary's Centre, Grassmere Close, Felpham, saw guest speaker Tessa Daines talk about old country customs and folklore.

MEMBERS of the public can comment about how much developers should have to pay towards vital services around Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council is staging the consultation into its draft charging schedule for the community infrastructure levy.

It ends on May 2.

The levy is a financial charge that new developments, meeting key criteria, will pay in order to contribute towards vital infrastructure such as roads, schools and play spaces across the district.

On-site infrastructure, within developments, is more specific and will continue to be dealt with through a planning permission, tied to a separate legal agreement known as a section 106.

An Arun spokesman said: "The levy will apply to all new developments that create additional floorspace, whether housing or retail, and will be calculated as a charge per square metre varying according to different zones - being higher where development is more profitable.

"However, some forms of development are exempt from the charge, such as employment land. Extensions and annexes to houses will be liable to the levy, unless an exemption is applied for, where they reach 100sq m or more."

Town's tennis roots go back nearly 150 years Bognor could boast three clubs in sport's early days I THOUGHT this week we could look at an activity that of tennis. What do you think of?

Strawberries and cream teas or sat in front of the television watching Wimbledon?

I am afraid for me it is sat in front of the television watching Wimbledon but for many people it is a serious activity which is blossoming because of the number of younger people represented at the major tournaments.

So now for a look at the history of tennis here in Bognor Regis. I was aware of a few courts, but not much else.

Ball games as such can be traced back to Egyptian temples dated from 1500 BC and the early versions of tennis came about around the 12th century. Next came real tennis in the 16th and 17th centuries, but that was very different to today’s game.

In the 19th century, there was a revival in England when courts were built in famous country homes and clubs began providing facilities for their members.

The biggest boost for lawn tennis came in the 1870s when the All England Croquet Club formed but failed to gain sufficient members so decided to offer lawn tennis as an added attraction.

We have to go back to the 1880s for the first mention of the Bognor Club which was operational near Church Path.

The president for some of the early years was Sir Christopher Teasdale VC, who was the Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria. Today, he is buried in the churchyard of St Mary Magadelene Church in South Bersted.

There are a number of small reports remarking on the ability to play tennis in this area and one interesting one recalls that an American visitor wrote that: ‘A man

in knickerbockers with a tennis racket and a lady wearing a thin white muslin gown and a thick fur cape, announced that the season of Bognor had arrived.

'Tennis was played with a zeal that makes it appear to be a serious battle rather than a harmless contest about balls, in every square inch of green large enough to hold a court'.

It was also possible to hire one of the four courts from a lady called Mr Cox, who would also provide the equipment.

In 1897, a programme was produced for an event on September 6 which provided a list of the committee which included EH Staffurth of Staffurth and Bray solicitors, now Wannops. The referee was recorded as EA Duffield-Jones who lived next to the ground at Neville Lodge in Lyon Street.

The players were also listed and include ‘The Lloyds’ from The Dome, three girls from Sudley Lodge, the daughters of Viscount Bridport. Another name was that of WK Hazelden who was playing in the open doubles. He was apparently the cartoonist in the Daily Mirror. One can only assume that he was on holiday in the town.

The next development is around 1904 when there was information on Nyewood Lane where again there were four courts, with enthusiasts wanting to play until midnight but, by 1905, it is reported that Reg Brooker started the Nyewood Tennis Club on these courts. Next, in 1908, there is a report that the Bognor Club moved to the far end of Church Path where there was a much larger area where they remained for a further five or six years.

Around this time another club appeared, named The Strathmore, which took over the original site near Lyon Street. At this time,

the president was WB Fletcher, who lived in what is known today as Hotham Park House.

They also operated four bowling greens in addition to the four tennis courts.

Around 1912/13, the Bognor Club moved to the premises at the Nyewood Ground and it is here that there are reports in various guide books about the range of facilities in the town. Some guide books also report that there are American tournaments held at the Lawn Tennis Club in the Upper Bognor Road courts. Eventually, Mr Reg Book with his Nyewood Tennis Club in Nyewood Lane amalgamated with the Bognor Lawn Tennis Club.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the town guide books included references to the facilities at the Bognor Lawn Tennis Club but also hotels around the town advertised their facilitates such as The Marlborough which had two tennis courts and the Royal Norfolk advertised five grass and one hard court.

In the 1950s guides there are also recorded courts in Swansea Place, Pavilion Gardens and in Blake’s Road Felpham. In Middleton on Sea, tennis was available at the ‘New City’ holiday complex.

In 1927, the St Mary’s RC School was built

on the land originally occupied by tennis courts and in recent years when there have been extensions to the school workmen have come across the clinker etc. from those early tennis days.

One report talks of some houses being named ‘Tennis Courts’ but at the moment I am unable to establish exactly where they were – unless you can tell me.

The Bognor Club has continued to prosper, although tennis seems to have declined especially with the lack of facilities being advertised as being available in local hotels.

The club expanded with a further four grass courts and, in the 1970s, three tarmac hard courts were laid adjacent to the grass courts.

A separate block of two hard courts had been added by the end of the decade and these were eventually equipped with floodlights. They are enjoyed by both adult and junior members.

At a time when schools seem to be reducing the amount of physical activity available it is interesting to note the club coach works with pupils in local schools at least to provide encouragement and tuition to their pupils in addition to all the other young people who are engaged in this sport.

Horse Racing THEY'RE under starters' orders - and they're off...

After a winter away, the flat horse racing season has got off to a flying start - and the countdown underway to Goodwood's first meet of the season just one month away.

THe Opening Saturday race meeting takes place on May 4, with tickets for the event flying out the stalls.

THose at the world's most beautiful racecourse promise a day for all the family, with people of all ages getting a special taste of the 'sport of kings'.

Meanwhile, jumps fans can still get their fix at Fontwell, with the course hosting its annual Easter Eggstravaganza raceday on April 12.

Darts AS the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League nears its end, the Captains & Secretaries knockout took place at the Newtown Social Club, with 14 teams taking part.

A change in the format this year saw the team leaders play as a duo, with the captains playing each other, then the secretaries playing each other, and a sudden-death one leg pairs game played if needed to find the winner.

After some good scoring along the way, the final pitched Peter Hall & Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) against Pat O'Hara & Gary Blackwood (Legends).

Blackwood eased to a 3-0 win over all in the captains match before Robinson evened things up with the same score in the secretaries clash.

THat took it to a shootout with the Legends pair making the faster start, hitting solid scores to leave 183.

O'Hara hit two treble 19s and a single 19, leaving 50 for Blackwood but he failed to hit what he wanted.

O'Hara then followed suit, allowing their opponents time to seize the opportunity. Robinson then hit double 5 for the leg, and the match win, taking the Benevolent Captains & Secretaries title for the Chichester Snooker Club.

Blues denied by last kick of game ONE point was all they needed, five points were in their grasp, but in the end Chichester RFC had to settle for just the two as they came out on the wrong side of a 34-35 thriller.

Blues flew out to a 31-13 lead over Cobham at Oaklands Park as their dominance in the pack saw them cross for a series of wellworked tries.

But, after the visitors mounted a comeback, Chi were cruelly denied a victory as the Surrey side slotted home the winning points with the last kick of the match from a penalty.

All was not lost for Scott Ashley's side as the losing bonus point, combined with an additional point for scoring four tries, secured Chi's London One South status for another season.

With two matches of the season, Blues can now focus on building on their current position of ninth, with a top half finish in the 14 team division still within their grasp.

Tomorrow sees Chi head to second-place Sevenoaks (2.30pm) hoping to spring a surprise while having a say in one of the tightest promotion races in recent years.

Oaks are just one point behind leaders Medway and level on points with third-place

Camberley so cannot afford any slip-ups.

Top half is the target for Sids SIDLESHAM will look to pop league leaders Alfold's bubble while promoting their own top half credentials.

Steve Bailey has had quite the impact at the Recreation Ground and will hope to finish his first season at the club by ending in the top eight of the 17 team SCFL Division One. With just a month of the season to go, the Sids - on their return to step six -are in that very spot with just three matches of the season to play.

Sids moved up into the top half after a battling 1-0 win over Midhurst & Easebourne at the weekend, David Rough hitting home in the second half.

THose three points ended a run of three matches without a win for the Rec Ground side.

"We have had slip ups in the last few weeks.

season by me and my philosophy and club and its philosophy and we are exceeding expectations.

"THis is all about now and we have Watford, QPR, then Gillingham and a cup final against Brighton to come so I just [want the players to]enjoy the games.

"It's nice to have four games left of a very good season where we have already exceeded expectations. I'd say to the players just enjoy it, smile and hopefully win all four matches."

It was United who went ahead though through Nicki Miles but Clark struck twice from dead balls before the break.

Another Clark free-kick was turned in by Kim Stenning and despite Amy Watham firing a second Coventry goal in from range, Chi held on to take the three points.

Smith said: "Molly's goals were fantastic.

THe first one started ten yards wide of the goal and went in.

"But we know that she can score goals but she showed that out of possession she's willing to work hard.

"She was getting picked on, tackled, knocked off the ball but then getting up and doing her thing."

Make or break week ahead for battling Bognor

AFTER nearly 50 games, it all comes down to this - two crunch games in the space of four days which could define the season.

Win both and Rocks will have a playoff spot in their sights and a cup final at a Premier League ground to look forward to.

Taste defeat and manager Jack Pearce will be drawing a line under the whole season, before setting his sights on improving on and off the pitch for the next campaign.

After starting the season so brightly, it seems strange for Rocks to be heading into this crucial stage of the year on such a downer.

Injuries to key personnel, the departure of on-loan striker Dan Smith and a poor run of form which saw the club go a month without a league win has seen Bognor fall down to ninth in the Bostik Premier.

By hook or by crook, a challenge for the top five is still possible but they must start getting results at home, starting tomorrow when they welcome 14th-place Brightlingsea to Nyewood Lane.

THen it is on to the rearranged Sussex Senior Cup semi final against Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday with the winners facing Burgess Hill in the final at THe Amex next month.

A victory last time out in north London ensures Rocks head into the week with confidence on the up.

It took a red card for the hosts, a determined defensive display and two second half Mason Walsh goals to seal the win.

But the result kept Rocks in touch with the race for the playoffs and, perhaps crucially, ended a run of six matches without a victory.

First team coach Robbie Blake said: "Anytime you get three points it is always a good performance whether you play good or play poor. "[Winning] it's the most important thing and we haven't had that in the last six games.

Pagham's plight started just after Christmas when injuries ruled out a number of key players and two of their top scorers George Gaskin and Callum Overton - left for other clubs.

Scoring has been an issue with the club netting just seven goals in the last ten league matches.

THe problems have been clear to see as a young side looking ahead to a positive campaign next season show plenty of endeavour but struggle to get themselves on the scoresheet.

THat trend continued last weekend when a spirited Lions side pushed the fifth-placed

Tigers all the way in a 2-0 defeat.

Despite losing Ryan Davidson towards the end of the first half for two bookable offences, Pagham had a number of chances to take the lead. Instead it was the visitors who broke the deadlock, netting twice in the last ten minutes to steal all three points.

If there's a silver lining to the dark cloud

hanging over Nyetimber Lane it is that the club's opponents tomorrow are on an equally bad run of form.

Common too have lost their last five in a row. But their struggles go back beyond Christmas with the club winning just once in 22 league matches, which leaves them fighting relegation.

'There's a real sense of frustration at the club'

THINGS change quickly at non-league level.

If I was writing this after the Leatherhead match I would be much more downbeat as it was one of the worst games we've seen in a long time.

For a while it looked like the game at Wingate would be going the same way.

THey took charge and, thanks in part to the sending off, as the game progressed we got better and better, creating more and our defence seemed to grow in confidence.

It was a clear foul on Dan, which could have seriously injured him. It was lucky he wasn't as we didn't have a sub keeper on the bench.

From that moment onwards we started to move the ball around a bit more and then Mason proved to be the difference with his two goals.

It means that we still have a very slim outside chance of making the playoff.

We can get to a maximum of 70 points but we will still need others to lose for that to happen.

You would have thought that the mood on the coach back afterwards was upbeat but there is a real sense of frustration around the club.

Injuries have hurt us and most fans were saying that without them we would be up in the top six.

A number are also calling for younger players like Ollie Humphries and Liam Brady to be blooded so that we can get prepared for next season.

But the general feeling is that even if we make the playoffs we will struggle given the injuries that we have.

THe management are clearly frustrated too. Robbie was struggling to hide it at half time when it was still 0-0.

He was speaking to fans before the match and clearly wants us to be doing better.

My worry though is making

sure we keep certain players for next year - players like Jimmy Muitt and Doug Tuck, who are excellent as this level.

At the moment, Mason is certainly proving his worth too and he's really grabbing the headlines.

He's become a real fan favourite. A lot of the supporters are saying how he has been a constant workhorse in the team, running down lost causes at the top of the pitch.

Perhaps he doesn't do as much defending as some would like but he frightens the opposition when he gets the ball and, as he showed on Saturday, is deadly when given chances.

One thing that I would like to see is moving him more central into a number 10 type role as it would give Brad more support up top, something that he doesn't always seem to be getting at the moment.

Tomorrow is the start of what is a tough run in, especially as our home form has been a bit up and down all season.

Brightlingsea Regent beat us 3-0 up there earlier in the year.

I didn't make it up to that one and it was probably good [for me!] that I didn't as it was a dreadful midweek trip where fans arrived late after a five hour coach journey.

After such a poor performance we owe them one but we need to get on the front foot.

Our downfall this year has been making too many silly errors. We can do better.

If we are to have any chance of making the playoffs then we have to win every single game.

I hope the win at Wingate lifted the side and the supporters are given something to cheer about.

THen there's the semi final against the Albion at Lancing.

How nice it would be to finish the season at THe Amex against Burgess Hill in a final.

Double delight for Chi! Men march to the title as Ladies beat leaders

'It'll be tough but Rocks can still make playoffs' BOGNOR first team coach Robbie Blake is urging the club to take one game at a time as the Rocks' distant playoff hopes remain well and truly alive.

With five matches to play, the Nyewood Lane side sit ninth in the Bostik Premier, six points off the top five.

A 2-0 win against the ten men of Wingate & Finchley last weekend - the club's first victory in six league matches has certainly lifted the mood in the Rocks camp.

But with matches running out fast, Bognor will need to keep that winning feeling going at home against Brightlingsea Regent tomorrow (3pm).

Claim three points and an unlikely place in the playoffs continues to be a possibility.

Speaking after the Wingate win, Blake said: "It's certainly by no means an easy assignment but if we win tomorrow we'll see what happens.

"We have to take one game at a time, you never know what will happen .

"We have to keep going - keep going for ourselves, the pride of the Bognor Regis Football

Club and the supporters."

Blake and manager Jack Pearce will be looking for their young side to give fans something to cheer against the Essex side tomorrow.

Regular visitors to the Nye Camp this season will know how much the club have struggled in front of their own supporters.

Of the 18 home league games so far, Bognor have won seven and drawn five - the worst home record of any club in the top half of the Bostik Premier which has hampered any hopes of an immediate return to step two of the non-league pyramid.

Blake said: "It will be a tough game, every game in this league is tough.

"We have to respect the opposition and see what happens but hopefully [the Wingate win] will give us some confidence moving forward."

A midweek Sussex Senior Cup semi final against Brighton & Hove Albion Under 23s on Tuesday (7.15pm) at Lancing's Culver Road makes this a pivotal week for the club.

Win and a final against league rivals Burgess Hill awaits.

Rugby BOGNOR THIRDS ensured a succesful end to the season by lifting two pieces of silverware on the same weekend.

THe Hampshire Avenue side survived a late scare to seal a 31-28 victory over Crowborough in the Sussex Vase final in Horsham.

THe Purple and Greens bagged five tries to take the victory, despite the East Sussex side mounting a strong second half comeback.

THere was double delight for the side, which is made up of veterans and colts, as the THirds were confirmed as league winners too.

Coach Nick Baker said: "Overall, it was a really great game of rugby against a really strong and well drilled Crowborough team, played in a great spirit and a fantastic day, which I hope has made everyone’s efforts this season seem worthwhile."

CHICHESTER CITY are within touching distance of their first SCFL Premier crown for nearly 40 years - and they can wrap up the title tomorrow by picking up a single point at home to Langney Wanderers (3pm).

Miles Rutherford's side have been imperious in recent weeks, racking up seven successive league wins and netting 21 goals in the process.

Chi continued their fine form last weekend when they put five past basement side Shoreham.

THat victory - combined with second-place Horsham YMCA and third-place Newhaven drawing 1-1 - means City are 12 points clear at the summit with just four matches to play.

With Chi boasting an impressive goal difference of plus 66, the title is all but won already.

But Rutherford's men can officially pop open the champagne corks tomorrow with a positive result against Langney.

With a strikeforce bang in form, few would bet against Chi from putting the stubborn Wanderers, who are sitting sixth bottom in

the standings, to the sword.

Scott Jones bagged his second hat-trick in three matches in the victory over Shoreham last weekend.

After breaking the deadlock just three minutes in, the ponytailed striker added two more composed finishes to guide Chi to another victory.

A bizarre own goal and a late goal from Josh Clack, his 15th of the season, rounded off the 5-1 win, which made it 20 league games unbeaten for City.

A first county league title since 1980 and a place in the Bostik League for the first time in their history awaits - providing they can pick up a point in the next four matches.

It was a good weekend for everyone involved at Chichester City as the Ladies rounded off a couple of days to remember with a 3-2 victory at undefeated National Southern Premier leaders Coventry United.

City boss Aaron Smith declared he was "ecstatic" at the result, adding: "To come here and put in that performance, I couldn't ask for any more than that."
