New road attack by council ANGRY councillors in Bersted have protested against a looming traffic nightmare.

Parish council members have unanimously formally agreed to object to plans to realign the A29.

THey have told West Sussex County Council they believe the current proposal is flawed because it keeps the busy road passing through the residential areas of Shripney and Lidsey.

Bersted Parish Council also protested at its meeting on Tuesday about the exclusion of Lidsey, Shripney and Bognor Regis from the consultation venues.

Its members complained as well that the maps on view failed to show the A29 and A259 in context.

Cllr Gill Yeates, chairman of Bersted Parish Council’s planning, amenities and environment committee, said: “THe

road will continue along through Lidsey and Shripney exactly as it is except with the additional traffic from 3,500 homes from the north and the big industrial estates to the south.

“THere will be a bottleneck from Lidsey through to Shripney. We only have two A roads in Bersted. One of them is causing problems now and the second one is going to be an ongoing nightmare.

“It does affect everybody. We are all

road users, as well as there being huge safety issues to it.

“THere was a meeting of the residents’ group in Lidsey with (county councillor) David Edwards, who is going to take up the issues for us as well as to why the road does not go where everybody thinks it should go – the Rolls-Royce roundabout.

Housing prompts a new campaign UP to seven people at a time wrote protest letters against the latest housing plans for Pagham.

THe mass writing campaign is aimed at stopping the current proposals for up to 300 homes in Hook Lane.

It began at a meeting held by Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement (Pagam).

THe pens being put to paper were overseen by Hook Lane residents Roger and Dill Cropley. THey were among the protesters who stopped the original plans for houses on the farmland in 1999 because of a lack of infrastructure.

Mr Cropley, who has lived in the road for 35 years, said: "People are livid about the latest proposals.

"THis is Grade 2 agricultural land, which the farmers can get three crops a year out of. Once it is concreted over, it is gone for good."

Mrs Cropley said: "I am disappointed and disgusted at the latest proposal. THe same reasons that applied to the scheme being refused in 1999 are valid today."

THe field flooded and, because it was up to six feet above the road, when it flooded more after it was built upon, so would the existing houses, she said.

"THere is no infrastructure like doctors and schools and Lagness Road was basically a farm road for workers and tractors but is now being used as an A road.

"I worked in a youth club for 25 years and I saw so many kids die on that road."

THe gridlocked conditions meant that a 10 minute drive to Chichester could take

more than an hour in the morning peak time.

"We are trapped between the A27 and the sea," she said. "Ambulances and fire engines struggle to reach us in time."

Some 260 people had attended the event last Saturday at Pagham Village Hall with an hour of the three-and-a-half hours left.

Pagam chairman Alan Pivett told them the latest plans by Hanbury Land Management were in addition to the original proposals which were rejected

by Arun District Council in January on safety grounds because of the amount of vehicles on the surrounding roads.

THe letters being written would be sent to the Planning Inspectorate for the October 22 inquiry into that decision and to Arun District Council to protest againt the current proposals.

THe cumulative impact of the scheme, and thousands of homes in Chalcraft Lane and Sefter Road among other sites seemed to go against the idea of a local plan being able to stop developers using any piece of land they wanted, "You name it and we are getting it. THat seems predatory to me," said Mr Pivett, "because no-one here that.

"We accept some housing is needed but it has to be in right place and the right properties, and spread across the district. Not dumped in our backyard."

Among the reasons the housing should be rejected were air pollution, lack of sewage capacity, the need to keep farmland, lack of GPs, and overcrowded and dangerous roads.

THe entire pool is almost one-third larger than the centre's previous pool and can accommodate around 950 people at one time.

THe building pays tribute to the past with a traditional fountain and exterior design in an Art Deco style but it is also thoroughly modern with cutting-edge energy efficiency and water usage.

Members of parenting website Mumsnet were consulted to ensure the changing village was designed to meet the needs of families, with heating, larger lockers and changing rooms big enough for families.

Butlin's managing director Jon Hendry-Pickup said: "We set out to build a pool that has something for everyone."

Jean makes history to be head of charity ACTRESS and playwright Jean Rogers has become the first woman to be chosen to head a county charity.

Jean Rogers has been appointed as president of the Royal British Legion in Sussex.

Her position was announced to the Legion's branches by their Sussex county president, Colonel Arthur Merrick.

Eastergate resident Jean, who is best known for playing Dolly Skilbeck in ITV's Emmerdale for more than a decade, said she was honoured to take up the role.

"I was extremely surprised when the approach was made to become the county president," she said. "But, once the surprise passed, I'm left with immense pride, representing the Sussex county in this way.

"I was five when my parents brought me from London to live in Worthing and I fell in love with the county," she said.

"I strongly believe the work the Legion is involved in today is very essential, especially for ex-servicemen and women who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, something First World War soldiers in 1921, when the Legion was set up, were suffering from, too, of course.

"I hope I can dispel any perception it is an outdated, irrelevent institution.

"THe Legion seeks to provide advice, support, information and practical help and, as a charity, is not just about providing fridges or veterans' gettogethers.

"So, I will do what I can to learn about the organisation and help publicise its value."

In his announcement, Col Merrick said: "It gives me great pleasure to introduce our new county president to you. I know you will wish to give Jean the warmest of welcomes as our county president."

Jean raised money for the Legion last autumn when she wrote, directed and narrated Our Local Lad to commemorate the cententary of the end of the First World War. THis looked at the family stories of some of the soldiers from the Five Villages who served in the conflict.

FELPHAM Community College hosted a FAB (Felpham and Bognor) school council day aimed at raising awareness about the environment.

Run by the Student Council from the Felpham school and THe Regis, all primary schools in the area were invited to send students to represent their school, with 68 children attending in total from across the area.

Students from year 1 right through to year 13 joined together to take part in the day which focused on environment awareness, recycling, climate change and what everyone can do to improve our future world.

Students took part in a number of activities including upcycling school benches by decorating them with mosaic recycled crockery, making model windmills to learn about reusable energy and taking part in challenges and games focused on what we are grateful for and what we can improve in our modern day world to be more environmentally aware.

` Car pursuit ends DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses following a pursuit which ended near Bognor Regis.

A black BMW estate was stolen from a house in Milton Road, Worthing, early last THursday, after its keys were stolen from inside.

It was driven back and forth between Worthing and Chichester from 3.30am onwards and was involved in a theft of fuel in Littlehampton around 5.15am.

Shortly after 9am the vehicle was spotted on the A259, near Climping.

It was pursued by officers onto the A29 Shripney Road, Lidsey, where it crashed. THree occupants were detained shortly afterwards.

A 17-year-old boy from Croydon, arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, drink-driving, burglary, dangerous driving and making off without payment, has been released under investigation as has a 16-year-old boy from Worthing, arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, drink-driving and burglary.

A 25-year-old man from Bognor Regis, arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle and burglary, has been released under investigation.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the burglary, or who has dash cam footage which may assist in identifying the driver of the BMW, to get in touch by calling 101, quoting serial 154 of 04/04.

Licensee to keep town pub closed PUB licensee Vinny Mulhern has said a Bognor Regis premises will remain shut - for now.

Mr Mulhern will keep THe Unicorn closed until a new management policy is agreed.

His barrister, Duncan Craig, told an Arun District Council hearing into a review of the premises licence for the pub: "Whatever happens today, his premises are not going to be open tonight.

"Mr Mulhern is going to take time to consider and absorb what has happened today and develop the management plan further in order to discharge his duty to promote the licensing objectives."

Mr Mulhern closed the pub, in High Street, about two months ago. A notice in the window says the move was because of flooding.

THe hearing by the council's licensing sub-committee on Friday imposed a series of conditions on the licence to cover the pub's operation when it reopened.

Its chairman, Cllr Andy Cooper, said: "THe sub-committee have given this a great deal of consideration and we are satisfied it will be inappropriate to consider the revocation, suspension or any significant reduction in the opening hours."

But he said its three members wanted to ensure the concerns of Sussex Police, council licensing officers and High Street resident, Marilyn Moore, who called for the review, were taken into account.

THis would be achieved by the replacement of the designated premises supervisor and cutting back the hours of

live and recorded music and drinking to 45 minutes past midnight on six nights of the week from the current 1am.

THey also banned the sale of drinks off the premises after 9pm compared to the present 1am Mondays to Saturdays and 11pm on Sundays.

THey added the need for an agreed dispersal policy and the pub's side exit only to be used after 1am to be added to the premises licence.

A 43-point management plan compiled

by Mr Mulhern for the pub would be expected to be adopted as well.

"It is the sub-committee's hope we do not see you back here again," said Cllr Cooper.

"We hope we have set everything in place to allow you to move forward and work with your neighbours to make their quiet enjoyment of the area as good as it should be."

Mrs Moore had told the sub-committee many of the problems were caused by THe Unicorn's late opening hours.

"My life was absolute hell from last April up until December from the goings on outside," she said. "THis was not a one-off. It was night after night after night. I honestly don't think I could take another year of that.

"I feel that if the licence was reduced to fit in with the 11pm of other pubs it would disperse the youths that hang around out there and the anti-social behaviour, including urinating in the churchyard and taking drugs in the phone box."

Arun licensing officer Sarah Meerten said the problems stemmed from the fact the pub was open later than others in the area.

Community will be bowled over at pavilion opening RISING from the ashes, Aldwick Cricket Club's pavilion at Felpham is set to be opened.

Fire destroyed the old building at Felpham Oval in January, 2017, but thanks to the efforts of club fundraisers, Arun District Council staff and builders, the Fredericks-Knight Pavilion at Brooks Lane will be ready to welcome players and supporters on Sunday.

Residents, and especially children, will be welcome at the community event which will have several hours of fun and attractions as well as a chance for youngsters to try cricket.

THe parks and estates team at Arun District Council helped the club identify funding towards the cost of the new build in addition to the club's efforts and assisted contractors Green Manor.

THe construction group Galliford-Try, whose staff had been working on the nearby university building, completed refurbishment work on the club showers and toilets as part of its contribution to the community project.

THe first game at the new facility is set to take place at the grand opening event with Aldwick Cricket Club (ACC) playing Sussex Cricket Foundation XI. THe opening event, which starts at 11.45am, will see a range of activities for all the family, including a bouncy castle, bath bomb making, story time and a free kids’ taster session.

In celebration of the new pavilion, a competition was run by Aldwick Cricket Club in which members of the public

were invited to submit a photo; painting or drawing that they felt represented the local area.

THe winning submissions have been featured in a mural designed by local artist, Chloe Dowsett.

THe mural will be unveiled at the opening ceremony and a sneak peek of the progress can be found on ACC’s Facebook page.

As there is limited parking at the site, Arun District Council and ACC would encourage both players and spectators to walk or cycle to the event.

Ian Guppy, from Aldwick Cricket Club, said: “We are proud and extremely privileged for this day to arrive and we can’t wait to get going.

“We cannot thank everybody who has helped in this project enough, we are an extremely lucky and fortunate cricket club to have so many people rooting for us and we hope as many people as possible come and share this special day with us.”

Arun property, estates and facilities manager Paul Broggi said: “Getting to this point has been a long journey following the destruction of the old pavilion and we have faced many challenges along the way.

“It’s been a great project to be involved in; working in close partnership with ACC. "I am immensely proud of the end result which I know is going to be a superb facility for both ACC and the local community for many years to come.”

Clean-up tidies beach A RECORD turnout will help to ensure Bognor Regis beach is clean for Easter.

More than 30 litter heroes took part in the latest Great British spring clean event along the foreshore. THe larger than usual number enabled a bigger area of the shingle to be scoured than usual.

THe area which was tidied stretched from halfway between the bandstand and the launching ramp in Gloucester Road and the Royal Hotel.

Among those who took part was THipawan Parke after she had spent 19 hours travelling from her home in THailand to visit her family in the town.

THipawan, 32, was joined by her daughter, Layla, seven, and some of her relatives at last Friday afternoon's event.

She said: "We do this event in THailand as well, where there is even more pollution.

"I thought 'Why not do it here? We should come.

We came straight here after we landed.

"It's good to do it and to get children involved to keep the beach clean. Layla always wants to get involved to help to keep her school clean."

THe litter pickers spent an hour filling ten large bin bags with an array of rubbish.

THe longest was a 5ft strip of wood and the largest was a plastic jerrycan, probably used for boat fuel.

Other typical items picked up included bottle tops, glass and plastic bottles, lengths of fishing wire and sweet wrappers.

THe litter clean was held by Bognor Regis In Bloom members and backed by the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District.

Rebecca Vervecken, the town council's mayor and town crier's secretary, said: "THis is the third year we have held the clean-up and this is the most people who have come along.

"THis has allowed us to clean a bigger area of beach than before. Everyone has done a great job.

Even if they've collected half a bin bag, that amount of rubbish has been taken off the beach."

One of the younger volunteers was Megija Manonova, 12, who went along with a friend.

She said: "I want to help animals by stopping pollution. Too many animals are being killed because people are not recycling their rubbish."

THe BID's board members supplied hi-vis tops for the clean-up and have a stock of them available for other community events.

“THat is causing chaos now – but this is dangerous because there are 200 houses in Shripney and 50 or so more in Lidsey. THere quite a lot of people involved.

“Once development comes to the area, there will be no other way of resolving this. THat’s why it’s important to get it right at this stage.”

As reported, the county council has proposed a £54m scheme to create a 4.34km section of the A29 east of Eastergate, Westergate and Woodgate to improve traffic flows.

It would start from the existing A29 Fontwell Avenue, north of Eastergate, and go to the A29 Lidsey Road, north of Shripney, where it would re-join the current road.

THe road would be built in two phases, with its northern section being the first phase.

As part of the road, which would be partly funded by the developers of thousands of homes around Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate, a bridge would be built over the railway line to remove the need for motorists to wait at the Woodgate level crossing.

THe consultation began in early March with a series of exhibitions in the Barnham area and lasts on the county council’s website until April 26.

Bersted Parish Council has also protested about the exclusion of Lidsey, Shripney and Bognor Regis from the consultation venues.

Its members also complained the maps on view failed to show the A29 and A259 in context.

“THe situation has changed since last August. THe harbour mouth has moved about 60m westwards and there is a shingle bank offshore which has moved about 75m inland and there is quite a lot of beach recycling along West Front Road.

A considerable amount of shingle had been found to have moved on the Church Norton side of the mouth of Pagham Harbour.

THe Pagham Flood Defence Community Interest Company still has planning permission to cut a channel through the Church Norton Spit. THe approval lasts until June, 2020, and can be extended if planners at Arun agree.

Deputy chairman Cllr David Huntley, the parish council’s acting chairman, said there was too little shingle at the moment to enable a channel to be cut in the spit and maintained. “We are limited to when work can take place,” he said, “in the beginning of March and in October.”

THe need for work to stop Pagham being flooded has arisen because of the growth of the Church Norton Spit between 2004 and 2016 and the change in the location of the harbour mouth.

THis has caused the incoming and outgoing tides to scour shingle from the foreshore and lead to up to 38m of erosion in some places.

THe spit has stablised but the situation is constantly changing. A community group and fundraising led to the campaign to cut through the spit and restore the harbour mouth to its pre2003 site and enable the tide to go straight in and out.

Temporary toilets are back on town's promenade for holidays to work hard to find an acceptable resolution to the current issues surrounding the facilities installed in 2018," she said.

As reported, the permanent toilets were put on to the promenade last summer. But Arun remains in dispute with their manufacturer about some alleged faults with their quality.

Arun has commissioned an independent study to try to break the impasse.

A delay with the arrival of the toilets last summer meant Arun had to rely on temporary loos then after it had closed the previous underground loos.

WORK is going on behind the scenes to ensure Pagham is protected from flooding.

THe area’s first beach management plan is being compiled and could be completed this summer.

Pagham Parish Council member Cllr Phil Hayley said a draft version of the plan was being considered by a community focus group.

“THere might possibly be some amendments required from the group.

Hopefully, those will be done by the end of this month and the plan can go to the Pagham coastal issues group at the end of May. THis shows it is moving in the right direction,” he said.

He hoped the coastal issues group would be able to make a quick decision about approving the plan once its members received it because they would aware of the issues it contained.

“THe hard work has been done,” said Cllr Hayley. “THe key people are on the coastal issues group and they know what the concerns are.

Hopefully, that will make the process much easier.”

THe scale of the situation was shown by the fact 10,000-50,000 cubic metres of shingle was moving off Pagham beach every year. But, despite all the work, its origins remained a mystery.

Cllr Hayley said Arun District Council had been active with three beach refurbishments of shingle in the past month. One of the areas it had targeted was East Front Road, near Pagham Yacht Club.

He also mentioned the work of a group called All Call Signs. As well as providing peer support, the group has a countrywide network of people who search for missing veterans via a social media beacon alert system.

Cllr Edwards spoke out at last Friday's full meeting of the council in a debate about the work being carried out to help the county’s former services personnel.

Members were updated on the Armed Forces Covenant, which provides support to those who have left the services with issues such as homelessness, loneliness and mental health. THe county signed up to a covenant in 2012 and earned a silver award for its work in 2017.

A BERSTED councillor has urged his colleagues to push for more help to former armed forces personnel.

Cllr David Edwards (C, Bersted) served eight years with the Royal Engineers and continues to receive treatment for post traumatic stress disorder.

He wanted the county council to lobby the government for more help for veterans, saying they ‘know what is happening, but seem to be oblivious to it’.

Cllr Edwards praised groups such as the Building Heroes education foundation at Brinsbury College, and the Littlehampton Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club.

Building Heroes offers five-week courses to veterans and service leavers, giving them a grounding in artisan skills.

THe breakfast club is a nationally admired support group, chaired by Cllr Ian Buckland, which attracts around 120 people each week.

Mr Edwards added: “It leaves a really bad taste in the mouth as someone

Ringers delight at cheque for charity AIRBORNE paramedics have been helped by a group of Bognor Regis musicians.

THe Bognor Regis Handbell Ringers have presented a £1,500 cheque to the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

THe donation represented funds raised during performances in 2018 by the group.

THis money will be used to help to finance the air ambulance's life-saving care 24 hours a day.

Pauline Allsopp, the handbell ringers' secretary, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to provide these funds to support the excellent work of the air ambulance, which is available 365 days a year across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

"THis is the second year our group has been supporting the air ambulance and, to date, we have raised a total of £3,500

for the charity.

"THe handbell ringers will be supporting the air ambulance for a third year this year and hope to raise a similar amount to assist this extremely welladministered charity.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported us throughout 2018 and the members of the group for their ongoing commitment and enthusiasm."

THe donation will fund the fuel costs of ten emergencies attended by the air ambulance.

All of the some 2,500 calls to 999 in the region are screened by the air ambulance's dispatchers.

When necessary, they send its crews of a pilot, a doctor and a paramedic to save precious time for the patients and to give them the best possible chance of recovery.

Town group is set to fly high AIR SCOUTS in Bognor Regis are set to achieve a rare link with the RAF. THe 1st South Bersted (Bognor Regis) Air Scout Group is in the throes of gaining RAF recognition.

When this is gained, they will be one of only a few Air Scout Groups in the UK to be formally recognised by the air force.

A team of air enthusiasts from Air ACES, the Arun and Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society, gave a seminar to the three sections of the air scouts - the Beavers, the Air Scout Cubs and the Air Scouts and Explorers.

THey told them about two of the conditions needed to obtain the RAF recognition. THe first is to identify different types of aircraft. THe second is

to be able to tell different parts of aircraft and how aeroplanes fly.

One of the presenters was Wing Commander Bob Prothero RAF (retd).

His 37 years in the air force saw him fly aircraft such as the Victor and the Vulcan.

Daniel Jones, the group scout leader of the 1st South Bersted Air Scouts, told the seminar about the benefits of having RAF recognition.

"It would mean that the Air Scout Group would have access to tour and camp at RAF bases, and hear stories from serving aircraft men and women about all of the different aspects of their work and trades in the RAF, and which would enlighten the Scouts to possible future careers in the RAF," he said.

Students raise rag race charity cash from sunny Chibiza to Bogbados SISTERS Courtney and Loretta Padgett turned Bognor Regis into Bogbados in the name of charity.

THe University of Chichester students from Leicestershire were among more than 1,000 connected to its campuses who took part in its latest rag race.

THey were in a seven-strong group whose members dressed up for a holiday in the tropical sun.

Acting for film course student Courtney, 21, said: "We have come from Chibiza to Bogbados. Some of our friends wanted to look nice today but we wanted to look cheerful.

"THe rag race is a pub crawl which goes on all day but it is for charity, so it's for a good cause."

Loretta, 19, who is studying musical theatre and acting for film, said: "It's a nice change from university life and a break from studying hard."

Friend Alice Martin, 21, from Exeter, said: "We wanted to bring the sun to Bogbados. We can't always afford holidays as students and we thought this would help to make up for that."

THe fancy dress event is run by the University of Chichester's Students' Union to raise money for its charity of the year. Its name derives from 'raise and give' and last Saturday's occasion involved visiting eight licensed venues around the town.

As well as having fun in a favourite costume, the day was in aid of the students' union's charity of the year, Challengers.

THis charity delivers inclusive fun for disabled children and and young people aged between two and 25.

Its aim is to overcome their lack of play and leisure opportunities and began in 1979 in the Guildford area of Surrey.

In 2017, Challengers opened a youth support scheme at Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester which supports 25 disabled children and young people aged 13-18 years on Saturdays.

THe charity has told the students' union that if 2019 matches previous years and it receives £1,000-2,000 that sum could provide up to 100 hours of play for those who attend its sessions.

A statement from Challengers says: "THe activities organised are planned in consultation with the young people themselves and, in turn, the support each young person receives is tailored to make sure they are able to access and engage with the activities that they would like to take part in."

As well as those studying at the university, people on the rag race included graduates.

Two of these were sailors Liam Strachan, 24, from Southampton, and Crawley resident Luke Kourtis, 25.

Liam, who studied business studies, said: "THis is probably our fourth rag race. It's all for charity and we have a good time as well.

"It's a unique event and more places should have one.

"We've dressed up as sailors because we've probably been everything else -

like police officers, jockeys and Toy Story characters."

Business and finance graduate Luke said: "We come back most years. We see it as a way to touch base with the university. We enjoy it.

"Because the university is smaller than a lot of others, there might not be the choice of nightlife that there is at other places, but it was easier to get to know a lot more people. I liked that part of it."

A spokesperson from the University of Chichester Students' Union said: “THis year’s rag race was a hugely successful event that brought together more than 1,100 students and their guests with the purpose of raising money for charity.

"We’ve hosted the race in Bognor Regis for more 40 years, and is one of the highlights of our academic calendar, attended by our current students and alumni.

“THroughout the day there was a great atmosphere in the town centre.

THe students enjoyed visiting all the venues on the route, while helping to raise money for the Students’ Union's charity of the year.

We are still finalising the money raised, but it is thought to be more than £1,000.

“Bars and eateries across the town worked in partnership with SU to co-ordinate the route and timings to maximise the safety, smooth-running, and fundraising potential of the event."

Barratt Homes is to submit a planning application to change its original plans for the full-sized pitch and changing facilities at the Site Six development. It will instead offer to put money into improving the existing facilities at the area's King George V playing field.

THe news was contained in an email from Arun District Council's group head of neighbourhood services, Joe Russell-Wells, to Felpham Parish Council.

He said the move by Barratt Homes was in keeping with the latest playing pitch strategy produced by Arun.

Various sporting bodies such as Sport England, the FA, the Rugby Football Union and the England and Wales Cricket Board had influenced the document.

Mr Russell-Wells said: "One clear theme which has emerged, and which has become core to the future planning of new sports provision in the district, is that of providing sporting facilities at 'hub sites'.

Because of this, an isolated pitch on Site Six was no longer supported.

THis had led Barratt Homes to be prepared to improve the pitches and changing facilities at King George V playing fields.

Kathryn is in very fine voice

A BOGNOR REGIS woman is singing for joy after two rounds of cancer treatment.

Kathryn Napier Bax belongs to the Cancer United choir in the town which is getting ready to make its public debut.

THis will take place in June and see its singers join with those from their fellow choir in Worthing.

Kathryn, 54, of Queensway, was twice diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells in her cervix. She was successfully treated on both occasions by laser.

THe mother-of-three said she joined Cancer United's choir when it was formed at the Laburnum Centre last October.

"I am a member of the centre's choir and a friend who also belongs to it told me about the Cancer United choir.

"We chatted about it and I decided to go along and see what it was all about.

"Our musical director, Andre de Silva, and Jan Sheward (who founded Cancer United) are absolutely fantastic.

"I've learnt how to breathe properly when I'm singing from Andre, which I never knew before.

"I enjoy the singing, I enjoy the company, everyone is so friendly and the atmosphere is brilliant. I would recommend it anybody," she said.

"You feel as if all your fears and worries disappear. You are just concentrating on the singing, not your everyday life with all the stresses and strains.

"THe songs are brilliant as well. Some of them I know and some I don't."

Kathryn's favourites are Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel, Pure Imagination from the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bruno Mars' Count On Me. THe choir's aim is to enable people whose life has been changed by cancer

directly or indirectly to gain support and to focus positively on moving forward.

Kathryn, who also has three grandchildren, was about 18 when she first went to her GP feeling unwell. Tests quickly showed she had pre-cancerous cells in her cervix.

THe treatment seemed to have worked but she had to have further treatment a year later when the cells had returned.

Her two great uncles also had cancer and her mother-in-law died from the condition as well.

"Cancer is very close to my heart," she said. "I was numb when the consultant told me I had cancer the first time. It was almost unbelievable and I was in shock.

"It wasn't until later that she mentioned that they were pre-cancerous cells."

THe best way to detect cancer of the cervix, or the entrance to the womb, is through the NHS screening programme.

All women in the UK aged 25-49 are offered screening every three years and those aged 50-64 every five years.

Kathryn urged all women in those age groups to take up the offer of a screening to protect their health as much as possible.

She added: "THey should go along. I absolutely think it is really important. It is easy for a woman to say she is not going to do it and to leave the appointment.

"But they must go. If cancer is detected, the sooner it is treated the better."

As well as the choirs, former personal care worker Kathyrn takes part in the pole fitness classes at the centre in Lyon Street and line dancing where her conditions such as fibromyalgia and osteo arthritis allow her to join in.

She also volunteers there at least weekly.

Nominations for elections in Bognor Regis in May Election nominations for Arun's Bognor Regis seats NEARLY 100 candidates are vying to represent the Bognor Regis area on Arun District Council.

A fierce political battle is starting to fill the 31 seats which are available in the May 2 poll.

Voters have an array of political persuasions from which to choose when they visit the polling station. Several Independents are also seeking to make their mark.

THe Conservatives want to hold on to their continuous control of the council since it was formed in 1974. THeir opponents will be seeking to bolster their numbers to provide a meaningful range of views on the local authority.

Going into the election, the Conservatives had 42 members, the Liberal Democrats had seven, there were four Independents and one Labour representative.

Dear Editor, For the past two years my neighbour has been throwing out food for the wildlife here in Bognor Regis.

THis is a disgusting and unhygienic practice and attracts rats. THis latest offering is pasta in tomato sauce.

THey are also feeding seagulls and foxes, encouraging them to come up to our building for food which means also through our open windows.

THey deny this when challenged, even though they have been seen throwing out the food.

THe Arun environmental health department say that as this is on private property they have no redress for this situation and it is the managing agents for the property to action. THe managing agents have passed this on to the letting agent for this property without any results.

Polite notices do not work, they get torn up. Has anyone got a solution to this?

f Shripney residents protest against the A29 plans Dear Editor, All roads lead to Rome, but it appears new roads in West Sussex don't reach Bognor Regis.

Along with many in Barnham and Westergate, those of us in the centuryold Hall Cottages in Eastergate are resigned to development in our villages.

We must evolve to thrive.

However, we strongly object to the wanton destruction of characterful communities and prime farmland and for a 'road to nowhere', the so-called 'A29 realignment'.

Especially galling is West Sussex

County Council riding roughshod over the concerns of residents and calls from its own councillors to reconsider its decision to proceed full throttle with phase one of the project, an arc of road throughout Eastergate farmland linking Fontwell Avenue to Barnham Road.

THen there is the issue of the southern end of the new road exacerbating rather than enhancing the traffic situation in Lidsey and Shripney, which you have reported (front page, March 29, 2019).

Locals were vocal in backing members of the council's environment, communities and fire service committee which called for a reflective pause in

development, time to consider the true impact of the scheme.

Cllr Roger Elkins, cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, ignored us and his fellow councillors.

We - and many in affected communities - are doing our utmost to ensure residents know the the council's public consultation closes on April 26.

We would be grateful if you could ask your readers to search 'A29 Realignment' on westsussex.gov.uk and ensure their voices are heard.

A city march for emergency climate action "WE ARE facing extinction and all anyone can talk about is Brexit – yes, it’s important but there’s no point in finishing it if we’re all dead."

THose were the words of a Year 6 boy who appealed to a West Sussex councillor to support calls for a climate emergency to be declared in the county.

While the emergency was not declared, the entire council came together and pledged themselves to step up work to combat climate change.

THat work will include: • Attempting to make the county council carbon-neutral by 2030 • Raising awareness of the issues and telling residents and businesses what they can do to help mitigate climate change • Looking at ways the council’s policies and work can take into account their impact on climate change

• Setting up a Task and Finish Group to look into the matter in greater detail.

At a County Hall, Chichester, meeting on Friday, there were passionate statements from members of all parties.

Proposing the notice of motion, Cllr Michael Jones (Lab, Southgate & Gossops Green) said: "THere is an overwhelming need to do as much as we can now.

"Securing real effective action in the short-term – ideally crash programmes of emissions reductions or decarbonisation – are more important than ambitious programmes for the more distant future."

THat sense of urgency was one shared by every councillor who spoke – not just for West Sussex but for the world.

Cllr Andrew Lea (Con, Lindfield & High Weald) warned that even a small change in sea temperatures would destroy the planet’s coral reefs, adding: "We are the

cause of one of the biggest and most rapid mass extinctions ever."

Cllr David Barling (Con, Bramber Castle) said: "THis is probably the most important motion that has come before this council."

Cllr Barling tabled an amendment to the motion, which was approved and recognised as strengthening the points brought forward by Mr Jones.

Calling on councillors and residents alike to do more, he said: "None of us must leave this to anyone else – we are all responsible."

Cllr Kirsty Lord (Lib Dem, Hassocks & Burgess Hill South) also tabled an amendment, though this one was not accepted.

She told the meeting that West Sussex needed to do more than most to bring about change.

Quoting a report from the county’s environment and change board, she

said the average West Sussex resident produced 16 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per person per year, compared to the UK average of ten.

Cllr Lord added: "THere’s loads to do and we have very little time left to play with."

Cllr Viral Parikh (Con, Bourne) certainly took the call to action to heart, pledging to cycle to all future council meetings – a pledge he realised he would probably regret.

On the subject of pollution, Cllr Anne Jones (Con, Burgess Hill East) suggested that this could be one of the root causes of autism and dementia.

Sharing the letter from the Year 6 lad in his Chichester North ward, Cllr Jeremy Hunt said: "We owe a duty to these young people – and I’m thrilled there are young children who are debating this in schools now."

Q: What are the advantages of carpet?

A: Carpet is comfortable, flexible and warm. These days, stain-free finishes are available and wool is a natural fibre for those who prefer it.

After 15 months of closure and following the death of founding father John Brookes in March last year, the team at Denmans Garden at Fontwell is continuing the renovations begun before his death.

The four-acre garden - an oasis of calm, tucked immediately off the A27 dualcarriageway next to Fontwell racecourse - is now owned by Gwendolyn van Paasschen, who is also chairman of the John Brookes-Denmans Foundation and came to know Denmans after working with Mr Brookes in the USA, and she is buzzing with excitement at the future of the beloved attraction.

Explaining the history of the site, which was part of a small country estate owned

by Lord Denman in the early 20th century then used by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn said it had been bought by Hugh and Joyce Robinson in 1946 and cultivated as a commercial market garden for 30 years.

From the 1930s, Joyce developed her self-taught skills as a plantswoman.

“While John was important to Denmans, it is also Joyce’s legacy,” said Gwendolyn.

“John, who was an established garden designer in the 1980s, brought students to see Joyce’s planting and, after he moved here, their complementary talents led to today’s garden.”

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

It is still cold at night and the good old British weather can be interchangeable, meaning we often have cold winds and rain not to mention frosts.

So what can you do in the garden? I know you are all itching to get started but perhaps not sure on the best jobs for this time of year. It's an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it's also time to start sowing outdoors.

April is the time to clean your borders and pots ready for the next season of planting. You can divide last year's herbaceous plants.

Plants can be divided successfully at almost any time if they are kept wellwatered afterwards. However, division is most successful when the plants are not

Visits to local gardens are a good idea as you can see the plants emerging from their winter sleep.

You will know what to look for in your own borders. Put plant supports around plants that are going to grow tall it saves trying to capture stems later. Also they will encourage the plants to stand straighter.

Pay special attention to your lawns.

The grass will need to be mown more frequently and will benefit from a spring feed. New lawns and turf can also be sown or laid.

If you are using turf, it's best to cut out the damaged area in a square and lightly fork over the soil. Cut out an identicalsized square of healthy turf and place it over the damaged patch and brush a sandy lawn top-dressing into the crevices between the turves. Turf will need to be watered frequently.

If you are using seed, once you have removed the damaged turf, sprinkle some crumbly top soil or compost over the base of the removed square and scatter the grass seed over the base and cover with a light sprinkling of top soil or compost to hide it from the birds. Water in with a watering can fitted with a fine rose.

Don't forget your indoor plants and increase the water given to houseplants.

THe challenge had been sponsored by the Daily Mail newspaper.

In May, 1969, the Daily Mail sponsored another race, this time between the Empire State building in New York and the Post Office Tower in London.

To mark the 50th anniversary of this 1969 Transatlantic Air Race and 100 years since the Alcock and Whitten-Brown crossing, the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum

is running a temporary exhibition at the museum between Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, May 12.

Although the 1969 air race was divided into a number of categories, the museum has decided to focus the exhibition on the subsonic jet category and in particular the performance of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR1 aircraft, then new to the RAF. Two Harriers took part in the race and the museum is proud to own one of them, XV744.

In addition to information display boards about the race, there will be models, colouring for children and a film which the museum has produced using footage of the Harriers in the race flown by Tom Lecky-THompson and Graham Williams. Tom and Graham (subject to confirmation) will open the exhibition on Easter Saturday.

Entry to the museum is included in the normal entry prices.

Community News & Views fit A resort g for a Kin IT WAS 90 years ago King George V and Queen Mary came to Bognor for their historic visit.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: THursday, March 21 - THe King passed another satisfactory day yesterday. Early morning mists at Bognor were dispersed by the sun early enough for his Majesty to spend about two hours of the grounds of Craigweil House; and after enjoying the sunshine he had a short walk before returning to his room. Dr Woods again applied the luminous ray treatment in the afternoon.

Princess Mary, Viscountess Lascelles, visited the King and Queen, and stayed until the late afternoon. Princess Elizabeth was also with the King for some time.

THe Queen did not go for a drive yesterday, but took a walk in the vicinity of Craigweil House.

Tuesday, March 26 - Tomorrow, for the first time since his illness, the King will take part in an official ceremony, when the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York will visit Craigweil House to do homage to the King on their appointments. THe Prime Minister will be present, and will take part in the ceremony. Mr Baldwin will leave London in the morning and return in the afternoon.

THe Archbishop of Canterbury is already at Bognor, where he has been recuperating after his illness. THe introduction of new archbishiops to his Majesty's presence is usually done by the Home Secretary but it was felt that Mr Baldwin should perform the ceremony this time, as it will be the first occasion on which the King has received a member of the Government since his illness.

GRAVES at Felpham parish church commemorating the lives of men who died in two world wars have been tidied up with help from a Bognor Regis business.

Covers timber and builders merchants, which is based in Station Yard, donated three bulk bags of topsoil, which were used to help improve the site at St Mary's Church and prepare the ground for re-seeding.

THe Rector of St Mary's, the Rev John Challis, said: “We, at St Mary’s, are humbled by the generosity of Covers. War graves are important and much respected sites of remembrance.

"St Mary’s has 22 war graves from the First and Second World Wars to care for. We are so grateful to our volunteers - in particular Jim Delaney, David Bidwell and Graham Matthews.

"THey clean, maintain and manage these places with much dedication and love.

Many people incorrectly assume they have to travel to mainland Europe to pay their respects to those who gave their all for our freedom, but they don’t.

"With the wonderful and generous donation from Covers we will be able to bring the state of the graves that we look after in Felpham to the highest standard.”

Depot manager at Covers Bognor Regis, Paul Allwright, said: “We were honoured to be part of rejuvenating such significant sites at St Mary’s. Maintaining the memorials is hugely important and we were pleased to help in any way we could.”

MORE than £40,000 in grants were awarded at a celebration of all that is best in Bognor Regis.

THe town's mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, hosted his civic reception as his year in office draws to a close.

THe reception was a chance to highlight the many charities and organisations who contribute so much to the town.

A Bognor Regis Town Council spokesman said: "THe highlight of the evening was the presentation of cheques, amounting to over £41,000, to successful applicants for the council's annual grant aid.

"THis money will provide funding for a huge range of requirements that will enable these groups and organisations to continue delivering the vital services, and exciting events and opportunities, to the residents of Bognor Regis and the surrounding area."

MARITIME welfare charity Sailors' Society is asking churches in Bognor Regis to remember the world's seafarers in a special service this summer.

Congregations around the world will take part in the Sea Sunday services on July 14 in aid of the good cause.

Each year, the Christian charity - which celebrated its 200th birthday last year - asks churchgoers to pray and give thanks for the world's 1.6m

It was attended by many invited guests. THey included the organisations who benefited from the grants, charities and dignitaries.

Live music was provided by the very lively three-piece band, Beaten Tracks, who were the mayor's choice, after they gave a fantastic performance at his daughter's wedding.

Guests on the night were hugely supportive of the mayor's charity, Arun Angels.

THe raffle in aid of the good cause raised £260. THe prizes and experiences included a bluebell walk with Rupert, the mayor's alpaca.

Special congratulations on the night went to Faz Chatima and Connor Merrick, who received the mayor's Good Citizen Award and the Citizen's Award for Young People.

Sandra Welch, its deputy chief executive, said: "Whether they know it or not, the people of Bognor Regis rely on seafarers."

Sailors' Society chaplains and ship visitors reach out on average to 1,000 seafarers and their families each day.

"More than 90 per cent of everything we own comes by sea - our clothes, phones, cars - even the bricks that make up our homes," she added.

A MOVE to join Arun District Council with the greater Brighton area should boost jobs and prosperity, it has been claimed.

Members of the Greater Brighton Economic Board, pictured below, have agreed to ask the council to join after a formal request was received from it last year.

Arun will join six other local authorities, business partnerships, two universities, Gatwick Airport and the South Downs National Park Authority working together to attract investment from the government and private sector.

Greater Brighton has attracted more than £160m for infrastructure projects within the past four years.

In a report to the board, its officers says Arun will 'add much to the critical mass and economic diversity of the greater Brighton city region economy'.

Cllr Garry Wall, chairman of Greater Brighton, said: "Obviously, both Arun and the members of the greater Brighton region will need to individually support this proposal.

"But the report makes clear what a good fit Arun is with us, helping us to grow and become even more attractive to investors.

"Since we began in 2014, we have now had Crawley Borough Council and Gatwick Airport joining us to make a very powerful region indeed.

"It goes without saying that the more of us sharing a common aim to improve the lives of citizens by working together for the good of the whole greater Brighton region can only be a good thing."

THe addition of the Arun district to the greater Brighton area will add 55,000 jobs and take greater Brighton's employment base to more than half a million. THe report to the board described this as 'a significant milestone'.

THe region's economic worth of some £23 billion would be boosted by 10 per cent should Arun join.

THe report also pointed out Arun had the potential to help to relocate some of the businesses who were finding it hard to get premises in the Brighton area.

In addition, 1,900 people moved from the greater Brighton region to Arun in 2016. Arun provided jobs for about 4,500 Brighton residents and 9,000 commuted in the opposite direction.

Arun's chief executive, Nigel Lynn, said: "We look forward to working more closely with partners within the Greater Brighton Economic Board area for the benefit of residents not only in Arun, but across the whole of this important economic zone."

A WEEKEND of family fun is in store in Bognor Regis.

THe Easter Eggsperience during the four days of the bank holiday has been compiled by the town's business improvement district (BID) members.

THey have joined with Spirit FM to create a holiday to remember for all ages.

From April 18-20, the main event will be the chance to take part in the Bognor Regis BID bunny hop rabbit hunt around the town. Anyone who enters has to find 20 rabbits hidden in shops around the town centre and write their names on the back of the promotional leaflet.

THe rabbits have been decorated by children who won the decorating competition that town centre shop Unique Knit and Sew has been running in the Easter holidays.

A total of 100 rabbits were decorated and 20 were judges and chosen to be included in the rabbit hunt. THere is a lucky dip for every completed returned form and winner picked at random will receive a big Easter surprise.

Street performances will also take place during April 20.

Darts LEGENDS X player Gary Blackwood capped off a fine season by picking up the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out Grand Slam Knockout crown.

Nearly 50 players took part in the endof-season showpiece at the Newtown Social Club with reps from all clubs.

After some excellent scoring - including no less than five 180s - Blackwood faced Ben Marley (Legends A) in the final.

THe 'best-of-5' final saw Blackwood, below left, win the bullseye but Marley took charge with back-to-back tons.

With 100 left Marley hit single 20 and the treble but missed the double. His opponent then nailed a 92 finish, hitting two double 18s to take the first leg.

Blackwood took the momentum into leg 2 hitting 120 and 140 early on. Marley would catch up with 123, but it was too late as Blackwood would take two darts to hit double 3 and take the second leg.

Leg 3 saw both players start straight away. Blackwood took the lead with two scores in the 90s and a maximum 180 with his fourth throw. With Marley back on 270 it was Blackwood's for the taking.

He hit a 72 finish to complete a 14 dart leg to lift the Pete May Champion crown.

Running BOGNOR Tone Zone runner Sam Yates rounded off an excellent week for the club by notching her first personal best in eight years at Mel's Milers 10k in Horsham.

Zoe Hemes, Debbie Patching and Debi Haddleton joined Yates at the laid-back event - with Hemes was first home for the club, finishing in 54 minutes 37 seconds and achieving a personal best.

Yates followed in 56:35 with Patching (58:08) and Debi Haddleton (59:24 personal best) just behind.

THe Adur and Worthing 20 Miler race, which is perfect for those training for a marathon, saw good times from Kari Mack (2 hours 23 minutes) Jessica THomson (2:35) - personal best, Carolyn Stapley (2:39 - personal best) and Anne Kari Enes (2:39).

Ian Bayley (2:55) and Peter Ramsdale (3:00) also performed well ahead of their marathons in London and Paris.

Over at Queen Elizabeth (QE) Country Park was the Spring Half and Marathon.

Tony Holcombe and Andy Shill took on the very tough and challenging marathon.

Holcombe finished in 4 hours 34 minutes, a personal best for this course, while Shill crossed in 4: 53.

Blues eye win to round off season CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to end the season on a high - and take on Westcombe Park tomorrow with the added incentive of potentially getting one over former head coach Rob Lawrence.

Blues have had an inconsistent 2018/19 season in London One South, bouncing back from a dismal start which saw them win just one of their first eight league matches.

A good run just before Christmas lifted Scott Ashley's side up the table and they have continued to pick up results when it matters to stay clear of the dropzone.

Blues, who now sit ninth, showed that they can be a match for everyone in the division when they pushed leaders Sevenoaks very hard last weekend.

A 36-17 defeat did not tell the real story as Chi's dictated large periods of play against a side who should be playing national league rugby next season.

Blues' attention now turns to their final match of the season at Oaklands Park tomorrow when they welcome seventhplaced Westcombe Park (3pm).

Under the direction of former Blues head coach, the side from south east London have

been competitive all season and head south after winning their last two matches.

With ten points between the two sides, a Chi win will not help them leapfrog over their opponents in the standings. But it will give the Oaklands faithful something to shout about and offer belief that Blues will come back stronger next season.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor RFC finished the season in third place after a commanding 29-12 win at Millbrook, a side who the Purple and Greens had never previously beaten away from home.

Fly half Dave Sweeney was the star performer in the match on what was his last ever appearance for the Hampshire Avenue outfit.

Early tries for Chris Webb and Darren Bidwell put Bognor into a 12-0 lead. And despite the hosts replying with a score of their own, Sweeney broke the line and popped to prop Webb who broke five tackles to slide under the posts for a 19-5 lead at the half.

Bognor never looked like letting this go, despite an injury to skipper Josh Burgess and a late penalty try wrapped up the victory and another successful year for the club.

Pressure piles on poor Lions PAGHAM’S plight continues as their tumble down the SCFL Premier standings goes on.

THe Lions have picked up just one point in seven matches as the Nyetimber Lane side struggle to shake off one of the worst runs in the club’s history.

THat sorry streak continued last weekend when the Lions were second best to relegationthreatened Little Common, coming out on the wrong side of a 4-1 scoreline.

With no game this weekend, the 11th-placed Lions will now look to regroup ahead of a busy Easter period which sees them play East Preston at home on April 20 (3pm) before heading to champions Chichester City on Easter Monday (11am).

Pressure has been mounting in joint-managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen.

But chairman Tony Shea has stood by the duo so far and seems confident that they will be able to get the Lions back on track in time for the start of next season.

Pagham did have a boost before the match against Little Common

with the return of Callum Overton to the Lions’ ranks.

THe frontman’s form was one of the prime reasons for a good start to the season at Nyetimber Lane.

But, his departure to Bostik Premier side Lewes coincided with Pagham falling out of the promotion hunt and starting a poor run which they have never recovered from.

Overton netted in the Common loss but the Lions never recovered from three first half goals for the hosts.

In SCFL Division One Selsey headed into a week off with a convincing 3-1 away win at Oakwood.

Blues made their mark early with Lindon Miller, Ryan Morey and John Phillips netting in the first 20 minutes to seal all three points.

Next up for fifth placed Selsey is a home tie against Storrington on April 20 (3pm) before an Easter Monday derby with Sidlesham (11am).

Sids are ninth in the standings after falling to a 2-0 loss at league leaders Alfold last weekend.

CHICHESTER CITY are celebrating their first county league title in 15 years - with nearly a month of the season still to play.

THe Oaklands Park outfit have been in imperious form all season and sealed the SCFL Premier crown with a 2-0 victory over Langney Wanderers last weekend.

A first half strike from leading scorer Scott Jones - his 20th in the league so far this season - gave City a well-deserved lead against the Eastbourne side.

THen, after a nervy second 45 minutes which saw Josh Clack miss a penalty, Emmett Dunn netted a firm header late on to seal all three points for Miles Rutherford's side.

Even with nearest challengers Horsham YMCA and Newhaven both winning, City have an insurmountable 12 point lead at the top with just three games to go.

So when the final whistle went, the Green and White Army went into celebration mode with champagne corks being popped between chants of "We Are THe Champions".

It is Chi's first county league title since 2003/4 and only their sixth since the league was founded in 1920.

However, unlike in previous seasons, this

year's victory will be extra special as it means Chi will gain promotion from step five for the first time in their history.

It is just reward for Rutherford and his management team who have put together a strong squad in recent years.

In previous campaigns Chi were unable to keep their fine winter form going right to the end of the season.

But a front line of Jones, Clack, Kaleem Haitham and Gicu Iordache have fired City to success with the club netting 96 goals so far this season - an average of nearly three a match.

Chi have also been strong at the back, too, with a defence lead by captain Connor Cody conceding just 28 goals, which is by far the best record in the division.

Chi now have a welcome week off, which will allow the players to rest up ahead of an Easter double header.

First there's a trip to Arundel on Saturday April 20 (3pm) before Easter Monday sees City welcome near neighbours Pagham to Oaklands Park (11am).

THey end the season with a trip to Eastbourne Town on April 27.

Rocks' fading playoff hopes look finished

IN ANOTHER topsy-turvey week for Bognor, the club ended up in a cup final but potentially finally out of the play-off race.

Tuesday night’s emphatic 5-1 defeat of Albion’s youngsters will have the Rocks’ fans once more dreaming of the club getting their hands on the Sussex Senior Cup – a trophy Bognor practically made their own in the 1980s.

Goals from Harvey Whyte, Brad Lethbridge and Leon Maloney had the tie wrapped up in the first 14 minutes with secondhalf goals by Jimmy Wild and an own goal by Seagulls keeper Billy Collings completing the rout.

THe semi-final win was the perfect tonic for another underwhelming league performance at the weekend which left the play-off positions even further out of reach.

First team coach Robbie Blake is urging his side to keep on fighting despite the 2-1 loss to Brightlingsea Regent at Nyewood Lane leaving them seven points off the final Bostik Premier play-off berth in 12th.

With just four matches

remaining Bognor can still catch up with the top five but there are a lot of teams slightly better placed than Bognor that are hoping to do the same.

If they retain any hope they must win tomorrow at home to struggling Harlow Town (3pm), who have won one in their last ten, and then pick up positive results at Dorking (A - April 20), Whitehawk (H - April 22) and Folkestone (A - April 27).

Blake said: "We’ve got to keep going. We are not out the playoffs. Mathematically, we still can get there and we’ve got to still believe. We don’t want people putting on the slippers and having a jolly until the end of the season.”

After the visitors took an early lead on Saturday, Bognor poured on incessant pressure and were eventually rewarded thanks to a THeo Widdrington penalty after Mason Walsh was fouled in the box.

But a late wonder strike from Regent’s Jake Turner left Rocks contemplating another season at step three in the non-league pyramid.

Aaron Smith's side have defied the odds in just their second season in the third tier of the women's game, defeating many more established sides.

With just three matches of the National Southern Premier campaign to go, City sit third after beating previously undefeated leaders Coventry United 3-2 last time out.

Next up is a tricky match against fifth placed Watford at Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm), a side who City defeated 1-0 in the reverse fixture.

But the team will be forgiven if some of their thoughts drift to midweek when they face off against Brighton & Hove Albion Development Squad in the final of the Sussex Challenge Cup (THursday, 7.15pm).

While it will be a younger Seagulls side than the one seen against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in the Women's Super League, it will be a stern test for a City side.

For manager Smith, a trophy would round off an excellent season - although he hopes that his team remember to play with a smile on their faces.

He said: "We have exceeded all expectations this season and we just need to

we can finish."

Victory in the Sussex Challenge Cup would see Chi retain a trophy which they have not defended since winning the competition in 2014.

City beat Brighton & Hove Albion that year and will be hoping that, in the season they have decided to re-enter the competition, that history is on their side.

TUESDAY night’s 5-1 cup win against Albion’s under-23 side was a good result.

THey were a very young side and they played a lot differently to how we’re used to in the league.

We were given the time and space to play a bit more football instead of being constantly under pressure.

It was a good performance from the lads.

I think we were bit more savvy than they were, we let them play into areas where they weren’t going to hurt us.

THey are good players but in the opening parts of the game we were pressing high and being physical with them and they couldn’t handle it. THey came more into the game later on but by that time, the damage had been done.

It is a great achievement to get into a cup final and we will have a good day out on May 7.

It will be great for the fans who deserve it after the season we’ve had. Our performances have been so inconsistent, they haven’t known whether to cheer or shout at us. Hopefully on the day we can give them something to celebrate.

I’ve played at the Amex two or three times now and lost every time.

It’s an unbelievable place to play and one of best pitches any of us will ever get to play on but it’s a terrible place if you lose.

THere aren’t many worse feelings in football than losing a cup final. You get yourself all built up for the big day, it seems the perfect day for football but then if you get beat, it is a complete turnaround in emotions. It is horrible.

And we know there are no guarantees that we will win against Burgess Hill. We always struggle against them and even when we won at theirs earlier in the season we were under the cosh the whole second half.

A cup final is something nice to look forward but that doesn’t mean we’re going to roll over in every other game before then.

We need to take the positives from Tuesday’s game into our next league game.

It will be very difficult for us to get promoted now but until it’s mathematically impossible we will be giving everything to win every game, starting with Harlow on Saturday.

THey’re not in great form, they’ve obviously been struggling but we’ve been beaten already this season by teams that have struggled. As we showed on Tuesday, when we’re playing well, we can beat anyone. THe problem is we’ve shown we can lose to anyone as well.

We obviously had hoped to be higher in the league than we are. We were in a very good position but when you lose unbelievable goalscorers like Dan Smith and Jimmy Muitt then everyone’s confidence drops. We’ve had other injuries on top of that and when you’re in a very good position with no squad depth, then unfortunately you will drop down when the injuries kick in.

Unfortunately, the players we want who could come and strengthen us, they could get double the money we can offer at clubs like Worthing or Havant or Gosport.
