Garden plan set to be sunk MULTI-MILLION pound plans for a new park in Bognor Regis town centre could be ditched by new councillors.

THe controversial Pavilion Park scheme for the Hothamton site has been fiercely opposed by Liberal Democrat members of Arun District Council.

THeir opposition failed to stop the scheme making progress when they were easily out-numbered by the council's previous Conservative majority.

But the stunning reversal of fortunes at last week's local elections means the Lib Dems, with some Independent allies, will be able to scrap or radically alter the proposals.

Lib Dem group leader Cllr Daniel Purchese at the count pledged the idea for the current car park, Sunken Garden and children's play area would be reconsidered. He said “THings like the Sunken Garden and like the local

plan – it’s about listening to the concerns of local people.

Many Bognor Regis councillors would say local people don’t feel listened to.

“I know Cllrs Francis Oppler and Matt Stanley have been working really hard to put forward different views and different suggestions.

“It’s important everything is on the table. I can’t go into specifics now but it’s about having a fresh look, which the

residents want, and seeing how we can make that happen.”

Re-elected Independent Jim Brooks has also been among the park's fiercest critics.

He said: “Regeneration without leisure is simply over-development. I don’t want to see any more loss of green spaces or parking in the town.

“I am very concerned about our major services there like the health centre.

Tina's still staying ahead of the rest BARBER Tina Payne has marked her 25th anniversary by criticising the lack of promotion for an area of Bognor Regis town centre.

Tina said she was angry the authorities ignored the High Street's eastern section when they publicised the town.

"We are a real community but no-one ever comes along to help us. THe post office has gone from there, the through road in the High Street has gone but noone from a council has ever found out how we are doing.

"It is such a shame for those of us at the east end of the town. We are not assisted in any way.

"THere is no promotion or advertising of us at all. THere is nothing on the seafront to tell visitors about us.

"THey all go along to THe Arcade and go through there to the precinct.

"It would be nice to have a sign on the seafront or a big notice in the town centre telling people there are more shops in the East End. "THere are a wide range of businesses in the area like a jeweller, a cafe, a hairdresser and a tattoo studio."

Tina celebrated her quarter of a century in her shop next to the former post office last Friday.

She hired a busker to brighten up the neglected area and also arranged for Stormtrooper and Dead Pool characters to visit from Grandad's Front Room community interest company on the opposite side of the road.

North Bersted resident Tina, 48, began work as a barber for businessman Mark Spindler at his former Features salon in London Road.

He recognised her desire to start her own business and enabled her to open in her current premises in 1994.

Mr Spindler guided her for the first three years to ensure she became well established and learned the principles of running a successful business.

Tina took sole control of the salon 15 years ago, with Mr Spindler as her landlord, and has never looked back.

"Mark has been a real mentor to me and has been brilliant at helping me," said Tina. "I absolutely love everything about being my own boss.

"It feels amazing to be celebrating 25 years of this salon. THere is a real community in Bognor and people are so loyal.

"I've seen so many changes along this road but my customers keep coming back and back. I'm now cutting the hair of the children of the children whose hair I cut when I opened.

"I become a friend of my customers and a counsellor as well. I get to know all about their lives.

"People say walking into my salon is like walking into their kitchen because it's so cosy and welcoming."

Group offers chance to appear in its next comedy production AN OPEN and informal play reading is being held by THe Regis Players for its new production.

THe session will take place this Sunday and give would-be actors the chance to see if they can be on the stage.

It will take place at 6pm at Felpham Memorial Village Hall, Vicarage Lane in Felpham.

THe group's next production will be Philip King's comedy farce, See How THey Run. A Regis Players spokesman said: "THis will be an opportunity for people of any age who want to get involved in

community theatre to come along and have a go at reading from a script and taking direction.

"THis event is open to all and the play reading will be followed by auditions to cast the play later this month."

THe action in See How THey Run takes place during the Second World War in the fictitious village of Merton-cum-Middlewick.

It features a cast of six males and three females.

THe Regis Players is an established amateur theatre group and has received many production and technical theatrical awards.

Petrol station is wrecked by fire f Members of the Santacruzen procession AN ASIAN religious tradition has taken place in Bognor Regis for the second time.

A touch of colour was brought to bank holiday weekend when some of the town's Filipino residents staged a religious parade.

THe Santacruzen procession is a major occasion in their homeland during May. THey kept the tradition alive in their parade from Hotham Park along High Street to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Saturday's event saw about 60 Filipinos of all ages dressed immaculately take part in the occasion. It was the second time they had staged the event.

Janeth Reyers, chairman of the Bogor Regis Filipino British Community, said: "As a mainly Catholic country, Santacruzen is an important occasion in

the Philippines.

"We want to carry on the tradition and we try to keep it going for our children.

"We were very proud and pleased that quite a lot of people watched our parade last year. We are happy to do it again."

Last Saturday's celebration was led by Father Ronan Ayag, who is a clergyman in Southwark in south London.

He conducted a mass in Our Lady of Sorrows after the parade as one of his monthly services there for the Bognor Regis community.

"THis event comes from a Spanish tradition of a devotion to Our Lady Fatima," he said.

"During the procession, we will be reciting the rosary.

"THe nearest event like this, that I know about, is in Southampton.

"I am linked to 12 Filipino communities, mostly around London, like Kingstonupon-THames and Roehampton. THey are increasing, especially as Filipino nurses come to this country."

THe Filipino community in Bognor Regis was created in 2013 after their home country was devastated by a typhoon and a mass was held for the victims.

Santacruzen depicts the finding of the cross of Jesus by Queen Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, the powerful emperor who ended the persecution of Christians.

THree of the adults in the parade each held a cross, a rosary and a Bible. Eight children were angels. THey carried a letter each to spell 'Ave Maria'.

Signs celebrating three queens were carried by some of those who took part.

A PETROL station in Fontwell remained closed today after being engulfed by a blaze.

THe Shell business just off the A27 is set to be shut for some time after the fire on Monday.

No-one was injured by the fire but nearby premises were evacuated by police as a precaution.

Eyewitness Jason Green, who lives in Arundel Road, in close proximity to the garage, said: "My family and I were just finishing breakfast when we heard a small bang.

"I dismissed this as one of the local vehicle recovery lorries, bumping over the speed humps, as they do. But the second bang was much, much louder.

"You could feel it through the floor of the house. We decided to investigate so we went outside and saw huge plumes of black smoke, and the undeniable smell of burning rubber.

"We walked down to see what was going on. THe emergency services were on site within minutes and we continued to watch the fire service attach to the hydrant and start

soaking the flames and the police cordoned off the immediate area.

"THe garage forecourt has been destroyed by the heat and most of the roof structure buckled."

THe first reports of the blaze were received at 9.31am on Monday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls to say a campervan was on fire on the forecourt of the Shell garage in Fontwell.

At about 10.30am a spokesman said: "We are currently in attendance at a fire at a petrol station in Fontwell off the A27.

"Police also at the scene. Please avoid the area.

"THree pumps were mobilised along with a water carrier. Six breathing apparatus, two jets and one foam jet were used to extinguish the fire."

A police cordon was set up and a number of nearby businesses and properties were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

"THe incident was handed over to police and we left the scene at around 2pm."

` A29 responses MORE than 500 comments have been received by West Sussex County Council about its plans for the A29 in Westergate.

THe council intends to build a 4.34km road to re-align the existing route.

Its consultation into the proposal prompted plenty of reactions from residents.

A county council spokesman said: “We have received more than 500 detailed responses to the consultation.

"THis included over 330 digital and nearly 190 paper responses.

We would like to thank everyone for taking part.

“We will now analyse the feedback and the results of the consultation will be published in the summer.”

THe new route is intended to start from the existing A29 Fontwell Avenue, north of Eastergate, and rejoin the A29 Lidsey Road, north of Shripney. As part of the scheme, a bridge would replace the Woodgate level crossing.

Newly-elected Arun district councillors Hugh Coster and Tony Dixon (Aldwick E) used some of their first comments after their success to criticise the plan.

Cllr Coster said: "THere has been a poor quality consultation so far. Bognor Regis was completely left out of it."

Cllr Dixon added: "THere will be seven roundabouts and 4,180 new homes along the road. Is that an improvement on the current road?"

Shripney residents have also protested about the fact the A29 past their homes has been omitted from the re-alignment.

Rail line will close for work TRAIN passengers in Bognor Regis have been urged to plan ahead of a major rail closure later this year.

A multi-million pound upgrade will see the West Coastway line shut during this October and November.

THe work will affect the route between Barnham, Chichester and Havant.

THe section will closed for nine days over the autumn half-term holiday from October 26 to November 3 and the following three weekends.

THis is to allow Network Rail to lay 2.3km of new track and replace outdated equipment at Basin Road, Stockbridge Road, Brook Lane and Bosham level crossings with new and more reliable technology.

THis will improve journeys for passengers and motorists who drive over the crossings. Work will also take place at the stations on that section of the route.

Trevor Tupper, secretary of the West Sussex Rail Users Association, said: "I know the schools and college around Chichester are aware of this.

"THere is never a good time to do this type of work but a half-term holiday is as good as any. Most of the passengers in the week coming from the west are students, though there are some commuters, of course.

"If Southern do what they did when the Brighton to THree Bridges line was closed during the February half-term, with a fleet of buses, I don't think there will be too much of a problem. THe real problem will be at weekends because Chichester will lose all its trains then for three weekends.

"But, even then, if Southern do what they do for the usual weekend closures, with fast and slow buses to Portsmouth, passengers should not have more than 20 minutes added to their journeys."

THe closures will begin on October 26 and 27 with the line between Barnham and Havant. On the weekdays from October 28 to November 1, buses will replace trains from Chichester to Havant.

THe Barnham-Havant line will be closed again on the following days: November 2 and 3, November 10 and 17 and November 30 and December 1.

John Halsall, Network Rail's south east route managing director, said the work would add to the more than £100m it had invested in the south coast railway in the past year.

"Passengers will still be able to travel to London, Brighton or Portsmouth, but may need to use a replacement bus and journeys will take longer.

"Following on from the successful THree Bridges to Brighton blockade, we will work closely with our colleagues at GTR (Southern) to put passengers first, ensuring people are fully aware of the impact on their journey and the alternative options available to them," he said.

GTR's infrastructure director, Keith Jupps, said: "An alternative rail replacement bus service will be in place and we'll ensure that passengers are kept up to date with the options available to them."

Bognor Regis trains will continue to run during the work and Chichester will keep its London service on weekdays.

Big Sleep Out at football club to raise awareness of homeless TO mark homelessness charity Stonepillow's 30th anniversary, the Big Sleep Out is coming to Bognor Regis for the first time.

THe annual event has been a regular fundraiser and awareness occasion for the charity in the grounds of Chichester Cathedral for many years, attracting hundreds of people to spend the night in a self-constructed cardboard shelter.

Bognor Regis Town Football Club will be hosting the event in its grounds at Nyewood Lane this Saturday from 4pm.

Registration is £12 per person and includes food and entertainment throughout the event, which is due to finish at 8am on Sunday.

Richard's 'privilege' to run for Dementia Revolution A HAIRDRESSER joined thousands of runners in the London Marathon to support research into dementia.

Richard Pearce, whose salon is in Aldwick Street, Bognor Regis, said he had been privileged to run his first marathon as a member of the Dementia Revolution Team.

Dementia Revolution is a special progect this year formed by THe Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK designed to focus on fundraising for a specific, groundbreaking research which is underway, although it is underfunded, and yet is within a decade of stopping the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in its tracks after early diagnosis.

Richard was one of 1,500 people in Dementia Revolution's team at the London Marathon. It was also the event's official charity.

He said: "THe awareness raised by this, headed by Scott Harvey Mitchell, Barbara Windsor’s husband, was enormous.

"Scott made several TV appearances prior to the marathon which he ran himself, helping to boost funds and awareness.

"I spent five months training and preparing to run with this incredible team. THroughout this, we were in touch with each other via our team Facebook group on a daily basis.

"We shared our personal reasons for doing it, our training run progress, our injuries and advice during the mammoth marathon training journey, how our

fundraising was going and shared ideas on how to fundraise for this cause we all feel so much passion about.

Richard continued: "Even the scientists whose work we are funding kept us informed and inspired and a couple ran the marathon with us.

"We have become a family during our journey of highs and lows, believe me you do suffer some lows during marathon training.

"Many of us had never ran more than 10k and 26.2 miles is something you have to dig deep for.

"My personal experience of the London Marathon was one I will never forget. THe crowd support was electric.

"Meeting the Dementia Revolution team face to face after baring our souls to each other online for five months, we came from every corner of the world.

"It hurt physically, it was emotional, exciting, and a privilege."

Richard added the effort had been worthwhile financially for the charity.

"My personal fundraising, with huge thanks to my customers at Richard Pearce Hairdressing, my friends and family, and my salon's donation topped £3,800.

"Dementia Revolution as a whole has topped £3m and counting.

"We will not stop and hope this will assist in putting an end to this vile illness.

"THe importance of this is huge.

Dementia steals personalities, memories, relationships, independence, and dignity. THe work being done to end this illness is phenomenal."

Pair jailed for assault A MOTHER and daughter who seriously assaulted another woman in Bognor Regis have been jailed.

Joan Lee, 47, and Zoe Lee, 22, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on April 26 following an earlier nine-day trial.

THe women were at a pub with a group of friends in High Street, Bognor Regis, on the evening of January 5, 2018. THey noticed the victim, who was sitting with her daughter, and invited the pair to go to a different bar.

During the walk, Joan, of Glamis Street, Bognor Regis, and Zoe, of Orchard Way, Bognor Regis, assaulted the victim, stamping on her and causing cuts and bruising as well as a broken ankle.

Investigating officers were able to view CCTV footage from the area and, with the support of security staff at the nearby nightclub, were able to identify the members of the group.

Aromatherapist Zoe and unemployed Joan were

arrested with four other women, the case against three of whom was dropped.

Joan and Zoe, with Carrie Osmond, 21, from Bognor Regis, stood trial at Portsmouth Crown Court on March 18. THe mother and daughter were found guilty and Osmond was found not guilty.

Summing up at sentencing, Judge William Mousley said the pair had learned a harsh lesson after they ruined the victim’s life for a period of time, both physically and mentally.

THey were both sentenced to five years in prison for grievous bodily harm and a restraining order against the victim was imposed.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Elaine Keating said: “THis was a particularly nasty assault on an unaware victim, causing serious injuries.

“We worked quickly as a team to identify the suspects involved in the case and would like to thank the security staff at the nearby nightclub."

Cllr Coster said this week: "We are currently finalising our list of the changes we wish to see for the future, and we will be looking forward to great things happening.

"None of it will happen overnight, these things take time, so don't expect too much straight away."

THe current plans involve building two blocks of flats and creating a green space, which critics said were smaller than the green area in the present garden.

Some of the present 215 parking spaces would also be lost under the plans to site parking around the park. As part of the proposals, the health centre could also be moved or replaced depending on the outcome of talks with the NHS. THe Pavilion Park was said by the previous council administration to be an attraction in its own right and a larger and higher quality public space than the current garden.

Its attractions are a green oasis, a cafe, water play, creative play, and and events space. THere have been calls from some residents for improvements to be made to the current garden and to make it more of a community location.

THe previous council had chosen consultants to turn its plan into reality but no firm proposals have been created.

Open air poll seeks views STRONGLY held views were aired when Europhiles staged a Brexometer in Bognor Regis town centre.

THe town's European Movement Group sought to find out people's views about the controversial matter.

Some 100 people took the chance to have their say amid the current impasse in Parliament. Most wanted Article 50, which sets out Britain's departure from the EU, to reversed.

Views were less clear cut when it came to the other two options on display.

Leaving the EU without a deal just proved more popular than the idea of putting the whole issue back to electors for a confirmation referendum.

David Meagher, the group's spokesman, said: "THis is as democratic as it gets.

"It was open to all voters, Leave minded folk as well as those who wish to Remain in the EU, and people in favour of the government's current deal.

"THe movement is going out to local communities throughout Britain with exercises like this so that it can help bring the nation and communities together at a difficult time for the country."

Shoppers who stopped to talk to campaigners when they put their opinions on the Brexometer often discussed the matter as well.

Passions ran high at times on both sides of the Leave and Remain debate but a friendly atmosphere was maintained and comments were ended with a handshake in agreement or with both parties agreeing to disagree.

THe street debates contained views which were expressed across the spectrum of possibilities.

THese ranged from leaving with a deal, in line with the government's position, reaching a default position and leaving without a deal or whether a new vote should decide the matter.

THe visit by the group's members was the latest they had made to the London Road precinct in recent months.

Nine of them took part in the opinion gauging exercise on Saturday.

Some of the shoppers who stopped held a firm stance one way or another.

Others were bewildered about the whole process.

THe European Movement, whose origins began with Sir Winston Churchill in 1949, wants to maintain Britain's relationships with all European countries.

Its position stems from Churchill's reasons for forming the movement 70 years ago to maintain peace between European countries and to retain a close relationship with Britain's European neighbours.

THe movement believes the way forward to put paid to the current argument, is for another vote to be held on the matter now the facts are known.

THis would extend the democratic and political process which started with the people and should finish with the people once the deal is known.

Whatever the outcome, Bognor Regis is still twinned with a French town and two in Germany.

"Perhaps this is the time when Bognor Regis could seek future opportunities to explore new twin towns from other European countries. Bognor Regis is a welcoming town," added Mr Meagher.

Community groups can apply for money to benefit residents GRANTS of up £1,000 are on offer to voluntary, community and charity groups in the Bognor Regis area.

THe funding is available from the Arun Wellbeing and Health Partnership.

THe next deadline for its small grants scheme is June 3. Application will be considered by the appraisal panel. A total of £5,000 will be available.

An Arun District Council spokesman said: "THe partnership's priorities are to promote physical activity and prevent social isolation.

"To be eligible for funding, groups

and organisations must demonstrate that their activities either promote or support one or both of the priorities."

ELECTORS around Bognor Regis will be going to the polls again later this month.

THe European elections will be held on May 23 - just three weeks after the elections to choose councillors for the area.

Polling cards have either been delivered to households or will soon be landing on doormats.

Nigel Lynn, returning officer for the elections, said he hoped people would take the chance to vote for the second time in the short period.

"Please use this vote. THis European election holds great importance," he said. "In the current climate of change, it's vital to make sure you have your say in who makes the decisions that affect us all in the future."

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm. THe results for the count will be declared on May 26.

MEPs are elected under a system of proportional representation. Each

party puts forward a list of candidates and electors vote for one of these lists or for an independent candidate.

THe parties are allocated a number of MEPs according to their share of the vote.

THe parties who have put forward candidates in the south east region are: Change UK - THe Independent Group, Conservative and Unionist Party, Green Party, Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, THe Brexit Party, THe Socialist Party of Great Britain, UK European Union Party, UK Independence Party and independents Jason McMahon, David Round and Michael Turberville.

MP praises work with prisoners WORK to cut re-offending by inmates at Ford Open Prison have been welcomed

by MP Nick Gibb.

Mr Gibb has met the prison's governor, Stephen Fradley, to discuss its activities.

"Ford is an important local institution that provides highly skilled work for people in the Littlehampton area.

"THe prison is increasingly successful in reducing re-offending rates by ensuring prisoners gain valuable work experience and life skills to help them succeed when they are released.

"THe education provided is also of increasing quality," said Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Ford is a category D prison with

544 prisoners and is run by governor Stephen Fradley.

It has an emphasis on resettlement and only accepts prisoners in the final two years of their sentence or those allocated to an open prison by the Parole Board.

Ford does not accept offenders with current or previous convictions for sexual offences through an agreement with Arun District Council.

Prisoners in Ford are expected to have a strong work ethic to take account of the fact they are being prepared for life after release.

Work opportunities within the prison include land-based activities, dry lining, stores, call centres. External work is varied and strictly controlled.

New help for older people OLDER people in Bognor Regis with mental health challenges will be able to find out about a new service next week.

Mind Coastal West Sussex is holding an information session about Communities in Mind as part of national mental health awareness week.

THe event will be held from 11am-2pm on Monday at the library in London Road.

THere will be some relaxing mindful colouring available for adults to enjoy.

Communities in Mind is for those aged 65-plus in Bognor Regis who may be feeling low, depressed, anxious, have other mental health issues, or who are experiencing isolation which is affecting their mood.

Coastal West Sussex Mind's Jo Bulis

said: "We know that depression affects about 22 per cent of men and 28 per cent of women aged 65 years and over.

"In West Sussex, the number of people aged 65 plus increased from 2011 to 2015 by 12 per cent in Arun and 11 per cent in Chichester.

"THis ageing population, and the fact that one in four people experience a mental health problem, means there's a significant need for support."

THe new service has one-to-one support, social meetings, art and craft activities, mindfulness and mental and physical well-being sessions.

Volunteer befrienders will also support those who may have lost confidence to get out and about.

Essential church work to begin as exhibition is another success DELIGHTED fundraisers are set to start protecting Pagham's church for decades to come.

THey announced the beginning of £350,000-worth of essential roof repairs at St THomas a'Becket Church as it hosted its annual art exhibition.

Proceeds from the three-day bank holiday weekend event will go towards the church's Raise the Roof appeal.

Trudi Kearsley, organiser of the exhibition, said: "We are about to start work on the roof.

"We are planning to re-roof a large section above the main aisle and the side aisles. We have secured just over £300,000 of the amount we need and that is enough for us to go ahead.

"It is amazing to have reached the target after two-and-a-half years of the appeal and it is a big relief as well.

"We have been helped by a £100,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as support from local people and local businesses. THere has been a lot of community support towards this."

THe work is essential to ensure the Grade I-listed church, which dates from the 11th century, is protected well into the future.

"When we first started to look into the work, we found tiles missing, tiles slipping and tiles which had delaminated.

"Because the church is so historic, we are limited to the type of tile we can use," she said.

"THe last time any work on the roof was carried out was after the 1987 storm. We

have done a lot of other things since then, but not the roof."

Some £1,000 was expected to have been raised by the 22nd art exhibition at the church inChurch Lane.

It saw 42 artists from the surrounding area, more than last year, putting on show just over 300 works. Some 40 of them were sold.

Ms Kearsley said: "We have had a good footfall. Last year was so hot that people went to the beach instead.

"People like coming to see the work, some of which is quite a high standard. THey enjoy looking at other people's talents.

"Local artists like displaying their work here as well. A lot of them are very loyal.

THey keep coming back year after year even if they don't sell.

"Two or them of them don't want to sell their paintings but they also keep returning.

"THe exhibition is a good community event, a good use of the church and it benefits the church as well."

Artist Tricia Green had sold three of her 12 works by Sunday afternoon in her third year of taking part in the exhibition.

"Painting is relaxing and it's something I can do. When I was at school, I wanted to join a painting group but I was told not to bother because I couldn't draw.

"I would like to meet that teacher now and show her some of these paintings," she said.

"It feels really good when someone buys one of my paintings. It's either because it's the right colour for their room and it's a

subject they absolutely love.

"It's also nice when people stop and point to my works. You need a reaction and a critique."

THe Aldwick Felds resident, 76, has been a regular at the exhibition since she returned from Spain.

"It's a lovely church. I come here to worship, so I am supporting it as well," she said.

She began to paint during the 24 years she and her husband lived in Spain. THe social club to which they belonged was short of numbers for its new art group.

THeir first lesson was to draw a handbag.

Mrs Green was unable to do that but drew her husband drawing the handbag instead - to the acclaim of their classmates.

Another artist taking part - for at least the sixth year - was Pagham resident Sadie Bass, 78. She had sold one of her five oil paintings on show.

"You get away from everything when you are painting," she said. "It is 100 per cent absorbing.

"My only problem is that I don't get as much time to do it as I would like.

"It gives you a lift when someone buys one of your paintings and encourages you to do more.

"I must have been painting for about 30 years. I went to art classes in Bognor Regis for three years and then learnt as I went along."

` Play Ranger dates POPULAR Play Rangers will be returning to Aldwick later this month.

THe holiday play sessions will begin again in the half-term break.

THe activities are again being funded by Aldwick Parish Council.

Visits bridge generation gap

SHORT walks by children in Bognor Regis are tackling large age differences.

Children from Bognor Regis Nursery School have become regular visitors to the care home next door.

THe weekly sessions at neighbouring Elizabeth House are established as part of the routine for the young people.

Dinosaur dancing, pass the giant balloon, bubble play and ring games have recently joined the activities which those of the different generations enjoy.

Joe Knutson, the nursery's headteacher, said the sessions had been so successful they had expanded from one to two groups of children and their families.

"Some of the nursery children's parents who help facilitate the visits feel that their children are learning to be interested in older people and to be responsive towards them.

"THe children are beginning to understand that their visits to our neighbours are special for all to us.

THey feel positive about helping our neighbours to have a happy day.

"THe children have so many wonderful activity ideas that they initiate to share with their friends that we are sure we will be enjoying each other's company for a long time to come," he said.

THe blossoming relationships at the Victoria Drive premises date from Christmas 2017 when children and their parents joined residents as part of the festive singing celebrations.

One of the parents commented it would be a good idea for the 135 children to visit the home regularly.

Talks were held between the county council-run nursery, which has an

'Outstanding' rating from Ofsted, and Shaw Homes, which runs the 60-bed home, and the partnership was set up.

"Children from the nursery are invited to go and see our 'our old friends' each week and staff very much feel it has become part of the children's routine and expectations, "said Mr Knutson.

"A regular group of children who show an interest in the project walk to the home with their keyworkers and parents at the same time each week and spend half an hour singing, dancing and chatting to the residents."

It has become clear as the weeks have passed that relationships are being formed on part sides of the age gap.

A regular group of residents take part in the visits by the original group of children. THis features chats between those present about which songs to sing.

Other activities have included planting sunflowers together, weeding the home's garden and planting new flowers, making salt dough Christmas decorations and playing parachute games.

Mr Knutson added: "As the children's confidence in a new environment has developed, staff from the nursery have noticed that children who would ordinarily find new experiences daunting have flourished and, over time, are actively able to participate and take a turn."

THe newly formed group of visiting children enjoy taking their singing sessions with their keyworker and her ukulele to the home.

Nursery rhymes begin the tuneful times together and then the music selection moves to older songs to the delight of residents.

HISTORIC scenes saw the Conservatives lose control of Arun District Council for the first time.

THe unprecedented results left the previously dominant party on 21 seats, just half of its previous number, and one behind the Liberal Democrats on 22.

It was at 6pm at last Friday’s election count at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham that the decisive result was announced to end the one-party local authority which had existed since it was formed in 1974.

THe final line-up of 54 councillors also saw eight Independents, compared

to four previously, the first two Green members and a same-again Labour sole councillor.

THis means a coalition of groups, probably the Lib Dems and Independents, will take control of Arun.

THere were gasps and cheers as the scale of the Tories’ collapse became apparent.

Lib Dem then group leader Cllr Daniel Purchese said: “THe Conservatives have not just lost their actual majority. THey have lost their moral majority and their right to govern.

“THey have made so many bad decisions – the local plan and wasting taxpayers’

money among them – and people are really fed up with the way Arun has been run by the Conservatives.”

THe rout of the Conservartives was so severe only two of their seven senior cabinet members were re-elected.

Four were defeated and one did not seek re-election.

THose who lost included long-standing council leader, Gillian Brown, and former housing cabinet member, Trevor Bence.

Both were pushed aside in Aldwick East ward by Independent Cllrs Hugh Coster and Tony Dixon.

One of the winning pair, Cllr Tony Dixon, said: "As we know, Arun has been under the control of the Conservatives for 45 years.

"In recent years, we have seen the council become complacent and selfserving. It is time to change.

"We need a council that respects people, serves people and gets back to basics. We will serve people, listen to people and deliver what they want."

THe same situation occurred in Pagham.

THe two Independent candidates were swept to victory on the day's highest turnout of 45 per cent.

Cllrs David Huntley and June Hamilton dominated the polling with almost three times the number of votes for the sitting Conservatives in a ward seething at large planned housing schemes.

Cllr Hamilton said: "Hopefully, this is the start of a new era in local government

"We will do everything we can not to let the voters down."

THe results were also notable for seeing the first disabled councillors elected to Arun. Two were from the Bognor Regis area – Cllrs Claire Needs (Aldwick W) and Amanda Worne (Yapton).

Both are Lib Dems.

Cllr Worne said her life had been completely transformed after a serious accident on her bike on Bury Hill.

“I am absolutely made up. Four years ago, I was lying in a bush with a lot of broken bones. I did not think I was going to live.

“Now, I am sitting here as a councillor.

It shows it is all about what you make of life. You can give up or you can take on the challenges," she said.

“I want to give the people of Yapton peace of mind that the community feeling and village spirit everyone likes so

much can survive despite the amount of housing we are getting.””

Cllr Needs, who has cerebral palsy, said: “I am absolutely amazed by the result. It is going to give me the chance to show the town what a disabled person can do.

“THis brings diversity into the council and it shows that disability does not have to be a barrier. I will give the council different ways of looking at things.”

Fellow Yapton Lib Dem Joshua Jones, usually known as Henry, was the youngest councillor elected at 20.

One of few leading Conservatives left, Cllr Michael Clayden, said: “THis is all about national politics. THis is a great shame it has influenced a local election.

“We have lost some very good, experienced members and they will be sorely missed. I now hope members of the Lib Dems will turn up at committee meetings so we can get policies on a more cross-party basis.”

Lib Dems back in charge of town council once more TWO recounts were needed before the scale of the Liberal Democrats’ control of Bognor Regis Town Council was known.

THe manual counting of the votes were Hotham ward to decide the correct votes for Labour candidate Michelle White and Jeanette Warr, of the Lib Dems.

Ms White had initially been declared the winner when the returning officer, Nigel Lynn, officially announced the results.

She was given 477 votes against the some 140 said to be have gained by Mrs Warr.

But the outcome, which was at odds with every other result at the election count, was immediately challenged by the Lib Dems.

THis led to the recounts which gave Mrs Warr 476 votes with 126 for Ms White.

Ms White graciously accepted the loss

of her councillor status after about 90 minutes. She said: “It’s important the right person gets the result.

“Somehow, the wrong result was given by the computer. THat happens. I would not want to take someone else’s seat because of a mistake by a computer. THat would not be the right thing to do.”

Mrs Warr said: “It’s a computer error and I’m very sorry it has caused stress to Ms White. But I think I am back on the town council with the right amount of votes.

“THe machine has got the count wrong but it has been done by hand twice and the same result has been given.”

Mr Lynn said: “THe computer transposed the different results. We don’t know what happened. We have manually

gone through the votes twice and have come within one vote.”

Mrs Warr’s delayed win gave the Lib Dems ten of the town council’s 16 seats.

THis has put them back in charge of the local authority after several years of a lack of overall control.

It also doubled their number of councillors.

THe Independents dropped one seat to five and Labour stayed at one member.

THe Conservatives were the biggest losers. All their four seats were wiped out. THis is the second time in about 20 years they have been absent from the town council.

Senior Lib Dem councillor Francis Oppler said after the count: "Having served on the town council for 17-and-ahalf years, I am delighted we are back in charge of the town council.

"We have traditionally always had a very strong presence on the council and we implemented many great things.

"THe Regis Centre, for example, would not be standing if it was not for the referendum we organised in 1993 to gauge public support for it.

"Under the leadership of Cllrs Matt Stanley and Jeanette Warr, who have been on the town council before, I am sure the council will do many more good things for the town.

"I am also looking forward to working with them as an Arun District Council member.

"THe change of control of that council will completely alter the relationship between the authorities."

Longest-serving Independent councillor Jim Brooks, back for his 13th year in Marine ward, said he would like to see the council use more of its powers.

“It’s going to be a very exciting time and we need to exert as much influence as we can,” he said.

Newly-elected Lib Dem husband and wife John and Inna Erskine are the first cople to sit on the council for many years after their wins in Pevensey ward.

Mr Erksine said: “I want to renovate the seafront to make it more attractive.”

Mrs Erskine said: “I want the concerns of Bognor residents to be put first. THere are a lot of social and regeneration issues there has been a lot of dissatisfaction with.

“We look forward to really listening and understanding what people would like and working really hard to make that happen.”

Labour’s sole member, Alison Sharples, was elected in Marine ward. She said: “I

imagine I will be working with the Lib Dems for the good of Bognor Regis.

“We were elected by the people and should be listening to them. As for the Hothamton regeneration, I don’t see why we can’t look at both (regeneration) schemes and get the best of both.”

Deputy town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall was re-elected as an Independent for Orchard ward.

He said: "I'm really chuffed I have won. I have three issues I would like the council to concentrate on.

"One is to promote the awareness of mental health, because it is a serous issue.

"Another is to tackle homelessness. It is a big issue in the town and there must be a way we can accommodate those we see rough sleeper.

"Finally, I would like to support independent businesses by backing the local economy rather than the bigger companies."

Hugh Bonneville is brilliant as Lewis with a characterisation ranging from confident deliverer of Christian teaching through chummy repartee with his high-minded colleagues to repressed feelings for Joy, doubts of faith and the final emotional rollercoaster of love and all-too-soon death.

flicker brightly before fading, has a rather jarring New York accent at first but the audience warms to her even quicker than Lewis' friends.

Despite the subject matter, there is much natural humour between the characters, especially Lewis' brother, Warnie - a fine, warm performance by Andrew Havill - and, among others in the outstanding supporting cast, Timothy Watson is delightfully sharp.

As to be expected at Chichester, the staging is highly effective, including references to Narnia but the whole play is a superlative production, encapsulating a moving evocation of life, love and inevitable loss.

IN Us, the film opens in 1986 in an amusement park in California.

A young girl, Adelaide Wilson, wanders off from her parents and enters a seemingly deserted hall of mirrors where she encounters not only her own reflection but a doppelganger of herself.

Cut to present day and the adult Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) is married and comfortably off.

When she returns to the resort with her family, she is sure something bad will happen – and she’s so right. Welcome to Jordan Peele’s eagerlyawaited horror follow-up to ‘Get Out.’ Also starring Elisabeth Moss.

In Yuli, superstar Cuban ballet dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta takes us through his life in unusual style in this mix of drama and dance, fiction and reality. Yuli (the nickname given to him by his father) transforms himself over the decades to top dancer, the film rooted in Acosta’s mission to understand his life in his chosen art form.

Isolani tells the story of a young mother from Glasgow who witnesses a murder and is forced to act as witness. But she must protect her young son.

Jellyfish, a further film with life-changing events, follows Sarah, a young carer who discovers an unlikely talent for stand-up comedy. Can Sarah do both or must

she give up one for the other? Come on, Sarah!

Judi Dench fans will welcome her latest film, Red Joan, a fictionalised account of the case of Melita Norwood, the so-called “granny spy” who was arrested in the 1990s for sharing nuclear secrets with the KGB 50 years earlier.

Even those who revelled in The Favourite’s previous screenings might grab another chance to see Oscar-winning performances by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. The film charts the war years during the reign of Queen Anne who is clearly not coping either privately or as monarch. A wicked delight! Admire, too, its style, costume design, cinematography.

Performance events: Broadcast live from the Old Vic, London, on May 14, Sally Field and Bill Pullman star in All My Sons, Arthur Miller’s blistering drama set in 1947 America. Beware of burying the truth. An Encore performance is on June 1.

From the Met comes Poulenc’s devastating story of faith and martyrdom, Dialogues des Carmelites starring Karita Mattila, a legend in her own lifetime (May 12). Contemporary ballet pleasures await via The Royal Ballet Triple Bill, live from the ROH Ballet on May 16.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness.

Monday, April 8 - THe first application of a new electrical treatment (diathermy), which it is hoped will hasten the cure of the rheumatism in the King's right shoulder, was made yesterday afternoon by Dr FD Howitt and Dr RS Woods, the rays specialists.

No other change in His Majesty's treatment is contemplated at present, and it is reported that he continues to gain strength and to make steady progress.

THe King spent nearly three hours yesterday morning in the grounds of Craigweil House. He walked a little, but in the milder air he preferred to sit in the warm sunshine.

THe Queen drove to Chichester yesterday morning and attended service in the Cathedral.

Friday, April 12 - THe King spent a short time in the grounds of Craigweil House yesterday, for the weather was mainly cold and dull, with some rain.

It was out of doors, however, that His Majesty received William King, of Bognor, who had served with him as captain's coxswain on HMS Bacchante.

Mr King is now 75 years old and it was over 40 years since he had last seen His Majesty. THe King and Queen shook hands with him and the King recalled old experiences as a midshipman with the Bacchante.

MORE than 100 people took the chance to tour a new Walberton care home.

THe turnout made the open day at Walberton Place Care Home a success. THose who went along were able to meet the care team at the home and sample some of its mouthwatering menus.

THe event was held three days after the home, in Yapton Lane, was declared officially open, pictured above, by the chairman of Walberton Parish Council, Cllr Suzanne Clark.

Cllr Lucy Ashworth, the Arundel town mayor, also attended the opening event. More than 60 people - who included GPs and health care professionals in the area - attended as well.

Alykhan Kachra, managing director of the home's owner, Country Court Care, said: "We are delighted that so many people have come to see our new care home.

"We've been made to feel very welcome in Walberton. We look forward to continuing to build on our local relationships and making Walberton Place a real asset for the village."

THe care home has been built from scratch on the site of a previous care facility. THe residential and specialist dementia care home has 80 luxury en-suite bedrooms, with walk-in wet rooms. THe interior decor in the lounge and dining areas has drawn inspiration from the surrounding area.

THe home features a Honey Pot tearoom cafe, cinema room, Elegance hairdressing salon, enclosed courtyard garden and Horse and Jockey pub, named in recognition of the nearby Fontwell Park racecourse.

More than 30 jobs have been created on the care team. More will follow in the next year. Home manager Cheryl Rolt is leading the team and brings her many years of experience in the care sector.

Together with her husband Peter, Cheryl recently relocated to West Sussex where she managed Country Court Care's Lakeview Lodge Care Home to an overall 'Good' rating.

MP Nick Gibb has found out more about one of the most important industries in the Bognor Regis area.

THe Conservative member visited a nursery in his Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency.

He was invited along to Binsted Nursery, in Lake Lane, one of three Tristram Plant nurseries by Martin Emmett, the company's strategy director.

Binsted Nursery grows 96 varieties of herbs for garden centres throughout the UK. It also grows succulents, or lower water use flowers, and flowers from bulbs.

Mr Gibb said: "Horticulture remains a hugely important sector of our local economy in this part of West Sussex, and ornamental horticulture in particular.

TRAVEL firm boss Tina Shaw-Morton has urged potential sponsors to back Bognor Regis Town as the club gears up for a busy summer ahead of next season.

THe Rocks played their final game of 2018/19 on Tuesday when they took on Burgess Hill Town in the Sussex Senior Cup final at the Amex Stadium home of Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

As Jack Pearce's side were battling for silverware, the club continues to make great strides off the pitch and, as a result, are devoting more time and resources to the commercial operation that provides valuable financial assistance to help run the club.

Tina is the joint managing director of Woods Travel Ltd, the Bognor Regis-based business that was the club's main shirt sponsor for the last campaign, pictured below.

She says the upcoming sponsors' draw - which will take place on June 18 at Seasons at the Nyewood Lane ground - provides a great chance to create awareness for companies that enter.

"THe link with the Rocks has been one which has been successful in raising awareness for our business," she said.

"Yes, we're an established company with an excellent reputation and we have strong brand recognition already but we have valued the additional profile we have enjoyed through our association.

DETECTIVE skills can be tested by budding Sherlock Holmes on a charity treasure hunt in Felpham.

Everyone can take part in the brain-teasing adventure on May 18 to raise money to tackle fuel poverty around the Bognor Regis area.

Being organised by colleagues at THe Co-operative Funeralcare branches in Rose Green, North Bersted and Felpham, the event starts at 11am at Grassmere Close Park. Parking is free.

THe walking treasure hunt will see clues located in and around Felpham village, with a ploughman's lunch to enjoy at the final location.

Shirley Heaton, funeral co-ordinator at the Rose Green funeral home, which is part of Southern Co-op, said: "Being part of the regional, independent co-operative, we get the opportunity to support local good causes like the Bognor Regis Lions Club and its Wencelas Appeal.

"THis appeal supports those that have to make a choice between food or hear. So, we hope any money raised will make a big difference to people living in the area.

"We also wanted to do something a bit special so have partnered with our colleagues to put on the treasure hunt.

"THere will also be a raffle and series of mini-games to take part in along the route, weather permitting."

Theatre programmes reveal history of town The publications are a treasure trove of information WHEN we go to a concert or theatre today, do we keep our programmes from the event?

Sometimes we keep them for the picture of the participants, but do we really look much further? Luckily for local historians many people in the past have collected these items.

I have recently come across a number of such programmes. One is from a Darcia’s Military Band Concert; and while undated it is early 1900. It is interesting to note that on the cover it states that Darcia was 'the only lady who conducts a Military Band'.

THe central pages of the programme list the range of musical items for the evening show, which ends with the William Tell Overture.

We believe the concert was held in the original Bandstand, which eventually became the base for the Esplanade THeatre and was situated on the small pocket of land opposite the Royal Hotel, where today we have a food and drink outlet and the skatepark.

Contained within the main 28 pages are over 63 adverts for trades throughout the area.

THus it would be possible to more accurately date this programme by tracing the history of the organisations and companies who have paid to have their information inserted.

Another two programmes were for the Bognor Regis Operatic Society events, dated 1955 and 1960, both performances were

held in the Esplanade THeatre. THey are both interesting local history documents. In 1955 they performed ‘THe Gondoliers’ and in 1960 ‘Love from Judy'. In 1955, their president was the very famous Eric Coates. He was inspired to write Sleepy Shores when looking across the water from Selsey to Pagham.

Page one contains a long list of their committee and patrons. Many of the names I expect people would recognise today: Purley, Reynolds, Hansfords, Charlie Kunz and more.

Next I took a look at the advertisements for 1955. First came the well-remembered Goodacres Toy Stores Ltd. THey were established on the corner of the Esplanade and York Road, with a telephone number of just 861. Included in their advert is a list of some of the items they sold, including Meccano, Hornby trains, dolls, leather goods, Tri-ang toys, soldiers and handbags. What surprised me was that they also sold tobacco and cigarettes.

Next came another large advertisement for Hillsboro Garage, where until recently stood a Polish supermarket. THey advertise that they were situated opposite the hospital and were ‘the finest Show Rooms in West Sussex for all makes of New Cars and Quality Used Cars'. A very positive claim. Here we find their Tel. No. was 3456.

Next we have a name many people will remember - that of Cleeves the Chemist in the High Street, next to the bus station.

THe bus station is where today we have the entrance to Morrisons car park from the High Street. Here we learn also that in respect of ‘Purchase tax; there will be ‘No increase in our prices this year'!

Next the North Bersted Players’ were to perform in the church hall, later in the month of November. THeir play was ‘And so to bed', tickets for this event were 3/- reserved during the week and 3/6 reserved for the Saturday.

THe Sea Crest Hotel in Nyewood Lane South were advertising their terms as from 5½ to 7gns (£5.25-7.35) during the summer season. Apparently, children were welcome according to age and season. I bet that was a difficult decision! THe later advertisements cover an electrical shop, pianoforte tuner, a lady who dealt with elocution and dramatic art and Linden Wools.

Now we move on to the 1960 programme, again at the Esplanade THeatre. On the front of this programme is an overlay relating to World Refugee Year. On researching it would appear that many refugees remained in camps almost 15 years after the end of the Second World War. THis was seen as disgraceful by those who had suffered greatly during the war and those who were concerned about their situation.

It was at this point that a programme was commenced from Great Britain to resolve the refugee problem once and for all - 1959-1960 was announced as World Refugee Year.

THe aim of this project was to 'clear the camps'. It achieved some significant results, especially in Europe. By the end of 1960, for

the first time since before the war, all the refugee camps in Europe were closed. THe proceeds from the 1s (5p) programmes were to be sent for use by the refugees organisation, Many of the advertisers in 1955 appear to still remain loyal to the society, five years later, but with larger-sized advertisements because of the increased size of the souvenir programme.

We also have new advertisements from such well-known companies as Hansfords, in London Road; F.J. Bobby (Bognor) Ltd, High Street; Marshalls, Belmont Street; and Hawkes and Son of the High Street. Plus an ‘invitation’ from Reynolds and Co. (Furnishers Ltd) to visit their store.

Some of the major companies in the town were also advertising, such as Hago, known for their contemporary wirework items.

Apparently, their items made in Bognor Regis were for discerning people everywhere.

Another advert told us that ‘everyone wants the new Lec'. THis was the new Lec International model P60 refrigeration, for only 69gns (£72.45). THese fridges were also promoted within the Olby & Son advert.

Builders and florist had also joined the list of ‘selected’ advertisers.

THe last programme is for the Esplanade THeatre, which produced their own programmes. In 1968 they advertised 'THe Glamorous Summer Show' where Bill Pertwee headed the show, returning for a second year.

We find many of the same advertisers were still involved; in addition they were promoting local events being held around the town, which were organised by the town council.

THe Eastern Bandstand (on the promenade) and the Hotham Park Bandstand advertised a busy schedule, with a selection of bands.

Remap is a national charity with 900 active members which helps disabled people lead more independent lives by designing, making and adapting devices, where none exist commercially, to suit the client’s needs. As a Remap volunteer you will meet the disabled people they help, often with an occupational therapist who can provide clinical input. Your job is to solve whatever practical challenge they throw at you, designing and then making a special piece of equipment that will help them become more independent. You will need somewhere to work independently on your projects. Some of the volunteers have their own workshop, others use community facilities or have a workbench and tools in the garage. You will also need to have the means to travel to meet clients locally. However you like to work, they would be pleased to hear from you.

Group Helper – Girlguiding Bognor Regis West

Girlguiding UK, as part of a worldwide movement, enables girls and young women to fulfil their potential to take an active and responsible role in society through its distinctive, stimulating and enjoyable programme of activities delivered by trained volunteer leaders. Adults are needed that are able to attend and help with Rainbow meetings (girls 5-7 years), Brownie meetings (girls 7-10 years) or Guide meetings (girls 10-14 years) on an occasional or regular basis. You might help with setting up activities, tidying away or helping the girls to take part in activities, either in their regular meeting hall or on excursions. You will work under the supervision and leadership of the groups trained leaders and will benefit from all the opportunities guiding offers its adults, as well as feeling good about helping them deliver guiding to the girls.

Volunteers are required to go on rota once every week/every 2 weeks to attend the Chichester Bell Tower Drop-in sessions; activities might include engaging with young people via conversation/gaming/help with homework, serving snacks and keeping the area tidy. You must be over-18, have good communication skills (particularly with young people) and willing to have a DBS check done. You will be required to volunteer for 2 to 4 hours (sessions are split into 2 hour slots) a week/every 2 weeks.

The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre takes in unwanted, abandoned or stray cats, kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs, and gives them a good quality of life until it is possible to find a loving, permanent home for them. Activities include: educating the public, neutering the animals, feeding and general care, and finding forever homes for the many animals in their care. They are looking for people to volunteer in their charity shops in West Wittering. Tasks will include: sorting and pricing clothes, keeping the shop tidy, working at the till, serving and helping customers. Ideal volunteers will have a personable manner, be able to use common sense and your own initiative and be reliable. The time commitment is flexible - part time or full time, some weekends and bank holidays.

Darts PDC Riley’s UK Open qualifier Rob Collins (Friary 'Z') teamed up with Gary Blackwood (Legends) and Daniel Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) to take the Bognor Benevolent League Blind Trebles Knockout crown.

Eighty four players took part in the competition, one of the best turnouts on record, with 13 former champions taking part. Collins and Blackwood were among them and used their experience to make it to the final with Robinson to face Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club), Dave Owens (Friary 'Z') & Mary-Jane Todd (BRSA Ravens).

Blackwood kicked things off with a ton.

Collins followed that with 140, already giving them a massive lead. On only Blackwood's third throw they were on their double, and he hit it on his third dart for a 21 dart leg.

Leg 2 saw a ton from Todd, but Collins replied with 140. Owens hit 82, but his next throw was 171, leaving 34. Robinson could only hit 78 to leave 108.

But both Hall and Todd missed the double, giving Collins a shot at 52, using only two darts to finish it off, ensuring they lifted the coveted crown.

Football A FOOTBALL fairytale come true that’s how Chichester College’s Female Football Academy’s rise to golden glory at this year’s AoC Sport National Championships has been described.

THe Academy, which is only in its second year, saw off competition from eight other college sides – many of them elite category sides with links to THe FA Women’s Super League - to claim victory and be crowned national champions.

Team captain Gracie White, 18, said: “It is unbelievable. THe whole weekend was incredible and to wake up as champions is an amazing feeling for all of us. “Some of the other teams had international players so we knew it was going to be tough. I don’t think any of us could have dreamed that we were going to come away with the championship. “I just think the reason we won was down to the raw passion, determination and drive that we showed. I think we really wanted it and the whole team was buzzing – we kept each other going.�

Having excelled at the regional stage of the competition back in the autumn, the Chichester team was undefeated in the finals (six wins and two draws), to take a nail-biting victory over Bristol Academy for the gold medal.

Bognor and Priory fall to defeats BOGNOR and Chichester Priory Park will both be looking to bounce back from opening day defeats as the Sussex Cricket season continues.

THe Division Two rivals sit second and third bottom of the standings respectively after losing last weekend.

Bognor, who were lost by 34 runs to Haywards Heath, head to Burgess Hill tomorrow while Chi will play Lindfield (both 12.30pm).

Bognor skipper Ryan Maskell will be seeking a much-improved performance with the bat after his attack, led by Scott Bingham (3-35) restricted Heath to 166-5 in their 45 overs.

In reply, the hosts struggled with only Mikey Harris (23) and Jim Fallick (36) reaching double figures in their total of 132 all out.

Chi, meanwhile, lost by 52 runs to Burgess Hill at Goodwood as the visitors posted 229-4.

Opener Peter Lamb (36) helped Priory get off to a good start. But, after reaching 76-1, Chi collapsed and eventually came up well short of their target.

In Sussex Premier Division Middleton CC skipper Sean Heather was the star, smashing a century in their eight-wicket victory over

THree Bridges.

After reducing the hosts to 277-7 in their 50 overs (Charlie Terry 2-52), Heather set about chasing down the score.

Even the loss of fellow opener Harry Hovey for a golden duck and rain reducing the target to 260 from 47 overs did not halt the skipper in his stride as he hit an unbeaten 139 from 137 balls.

He was supported by Ben Ferbrache (63*) in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 158 as Middleton reached the score with more than six overs to spare.

GB call ups for young Falcons CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club started the season flying with three of their squad receiving GB honours.

THe Falcons’ first game of the season was a tough challenge as they took on Itchen Knicks, last year’s league champions.

Chichester came out all guns blazing by smashing ten runs straight onto the board in the first inning, only to be matched by ten of the Knicks’ own.

From that point on, the score was never more than three runs apart as both sides battled hard and kept tight defence for the remainder of the game.

After six innings the game was still tied and the seventh in the failing light saw the Knicks just edge ahead to finally win the game 23-20.

THe following Saturday saw three Chichester youngsters travel to GB U18s trials in Farnham Park, Buckinghamshire.

Finley Macknay, Oliver THornhill and Owen Randell were put through their paces in practice and fastpitch league games, where they teamed up

with Falcons coach Olly Howley under the watchful eye of team manager Ian Tomlin.

At the end of the day, it was announced all three had made the grade and Finley, Oliver and Owen can now join up with their GB team-mates while looking forward to enjoying some international softball experience.

THey join Olly Howley and Amy Morris in a growing gang of five youngsters from Chichester now in the GB softball programme.

Back in the city, the Falcons seniors squad played out the Solent League Firstball tournament, where they took on 13 teams from the local league and beyond.

Despite an early loss to Solent Sluggers, Chichester won all of their remaining games against Spitfires, Bracknell, Sharks, Brewers and Brighton Beachcombers to take the tournament shield trophy.

THe Falcons squad included four players who have recently graduated out of the juniors section – a positive sign of things to come for softball in Chichester.

SUSSEX jockey Jason Watson has declared his love for Goodwood after landing yet another winner on Opening Saturday at the South Downs course.

THe Brighton-born rider maintained his good rapport with his local track when successful on Dominus for Brian Meehan in THe Sussex Roof Garden Novice Stakes.

THe 9/4 shot quickened with two furlongs to go and just about edged out 6/5 favourite Qutob to land the race.

It was yet another successful homecoming for Watson who was victorious in the Stewards’ Cup at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in 2018.

He said: "I have a close affinity with the track, it’s one of my favourite racecourses to ride and a real family day out for me."

It was one of a number of exciting races the crowd of more than 10,000 enjoyed at the track.

THe eight-race card commenced with THe Double Trigger Handicap Stakes, where the local challenge looked strong with the favourite Cristal Spirit trained in Chiddingfold

by George Baker and bred by Meon Valley.

However, it was Horsham trainer, Gary

Moore, whose Rydan landed the race, held up in midfield, he travelled strongly into the home straight before asserting inside the final furlong to beat long-time leader Berrahri.

THe two Listed contests attracted highquality fields.

THe first, THe Unibet EBF Daisy Warwick Stakes, provided a second win in the race for John Gosden when Enbihaar prevailed.

In a race run to suit, the lightly raced 11-4 shot finished strongly under Dane O’Neil to beat favourite Klassique, with the two fillies pulling a convincing 4½ lengths clear of the field.

THe second, the Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes, saw the William Haggas trained Awesometank bounce back to form following a below-par run at the end of last season.

THe next event at the track is the May Festival which takes place from May 23-25.

Rocks end 32 year wait for the Senior Cup

ROCKS boss Jack Pearce has insisted his future as manager is in the hands of his players after the club lifted the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in more than 30 years.

Bognor managed to edge out Burgess Hill 2-1 as Doug Tuck coolly slotted home in extra time to seal the win in front of a crowd of more than 1,200 at THe Amex.

After a difficult season which saw Rocks fall from playoff contention to finish 14th in the Bostik Premier, lifting some silverware brought some smiles to everyone involved in the club.

While Pearce dedicated the win to supporters, he admitted that thoughts were already turning to the next campaign.

With a season of rebuilding ahead, the veteran manager said he was looking forward to working with first team coach Robbie Blake to rebuild the squad.

Pearce said: "THe most important thing to me is listening to the players.

"THe response from them on Tuesday was magnificent and I will wait and see what it’s like with the ones we keep and the players we sign, they will decide my fate [as manager]."

With injuries forever an issue this campaign, Pearce was forced

to field an inexperienced side for the cup final.

Jimmy Wild gave the Rocks an early lead before the Hillains equalised before the break.

It remained this way until extra time when Tuck came off the bench to coolly slot home.

Pearce said: "Our form in the last month of the season has been relegation form so to get the effort was absolutely magnificent.

"In the first 20 minutes we played football as good as any this year creating three or four which we should have taken.

"I'm delighted for the players and the fans who have shown to be true supporters of this club."

For Pearce, too, it brought back memories of 1987 when he was in charge for the Rocks' last triumph in this competition.

He said: "It is 32 years since we last won it - I have done my stint and it is still a lovely feeling but I am so pleased for Robbie and Neil, the backroom staff and the players - I can’t say how hard they have all worked."

Rocks will now have six weeks off before returning to pre-season at the end of June.

THe first friendly of the new year has been confirmed with National South side Havant & Waterlooville visiting Nyewood Lane on July 10 (7.45pm).

City celebrate best ever year CHICHESTER City Ladies assistant manager Lee Hurrell has praised every member of the squad for helping propel the club to a record-breaking season.

THe club ended their campaign last weekend with a 2-2 draw away at Gillingham, with Laura Ingram and Kim Stenning getting the goals.

It means Chi, who have one of the smallest budgets in the league, ended the National Southern Premier season in third with 46 points - 18 more than the tally gained in 2017/18.

THrow in a Sussex Challenge Cup trophy alongside the highest finish ever in the league and it was no wonder that there were smiles all round at the end of their final game of the year.

For the Chi coaching staff, this success was all down to the work of the players.

Hurrell said: "When I sat down with [manager] Aaron Smith and Matt Wright in June last year to discuss joining Chi City, it was their plans and ambition for the coming season that sold me on the club.

"THe top four and a Sussex cup was it? I think we did all right!

"What a group of players to work with too, so much ability and personality in the group.

"From the first pre-season session to the final minute yesterday, they’ve worked so hard for everything that’s been achieved

this season."

Chi will be disappointed not to end their season with a victory on the north Kent coast.

After the Gills missed a penalty, it was Ingram who gave City the lead when she volleyed in a corner.

Chi couldn’t maintain the advantage after

the break as Maddison Chamney-Farrand scored directly from a corner before Breon Grant put the Blues ahead.

WELL what an end to the season that was.

It's amazing personally to lift the Sussex Senior Cup trophy for the first time in 32 years for the club. But really it was a night for the fans.

THey were absolutely fantastic throughout the whole game and at stages all you could hear were our supporters singing.

When we had water breaks a few of the lads were commenting on the singing and it really did give us a lift.

THe whole squad are just so pleased that after a disappointing season we have been able to give them something to shout about.

Truth be told if we had taken our chances in the first 30 minutes we could have been four up just like the Brighton game. But being Bognor Regis Town we like to do things the difficult way.

Jimmy Wild missed one, Muitt missed one, Brad missed one - and because we missed a few chances then we started to perhaps stop doing the things that were making us successful.

We were trying to go straight in behind and run with the ball when we didn't need to and that let them back into it.

But as the game went on and players started to get more tired we started to take control.

THe introduction of Doug helped as he is important in any game where you want to play football.

He is probably the best ball player in the league - you just have to watch him to see that.

He will never be the most physical but he will calm things down, retain possession and start attacks.

And as we saw, he is good for a goal, keeping his head and just passing one into the back of the net to give us the 2-1 win.

I'm happy for him as he's been here a while and he deserved it.

THere were a few moments of concern, particularly when Chad went off as we knew

that as the game on went they would go direct and he was the best header of the ball we had.

But with me slotting into centre half, we managed the game well into the latter stages and we dealt with things quite well.

When the final whistle came there was just relief that we had got there in the end.

I was just so happy for the fans, the players, for Blakey and for Jack.

Jack does get some stick from the fans but he puts in so many hours for the club that it's good to thank him for everything he does.

Having said that, if I was offered 14th and the cup win at the start of the season then I'm not sure I would have taken it. As nice as it was to win the cup and have the whole experience of playing in that stadium we could have done so much more in the league.

I like to think that next season we will get to the playoffs and produce all round better performances at home and away. We need more consistency.

For me personally I have no intentions of leaving but you never know what happens in football.

I think the club needs to look at the players we want to keep and then make some new additions who can bring some experience and leadership with them.

Jack and Blakey know this and are already busy working on things behind the scenes.

I think it will be difficult to keep hold of some of our players, especially if they get better financial offers from elsewhere. We shall see.

It's time now to let the hair down, have a good few weeks off and have a nice holiday.

When it starts creeping round to June time I’ll be starting to go on a few runs before pre-season starts.

It's important to rest up physically and mentally so that I will be ready to go for the new season.
