GIVE Bognor Regis Town Hall back to the town, a re-elected councillor has urged.

Cllr Jim Brooks is the longest-serving Independent member of Arun District Council. He has just begun his 13th year representing Marine ward.

Independent members have taken on a new prominence in Arun after eight, all from the Bognor Regis area, were elected earlier this month.

Outside the session, Cllr Brooks (Marine) said he wanted the new council, with no overall control, to look at returning the town hall to Bognor Regis.

"I would like to see Bognor Regis Town Council taking on the town hall. I think it should be given to us. We need to keep hold of our town hall. It’s the seat of our area, which is getting bigger and bigger every year.

“We need to keep our heritage and have our own meeting place.

"We need to investigate how the town hall could be gifted back to Bognor Regis.

It is meant to be the town hall. It would be quite difficult for it to be anything else.

“Bognor Regis is expanding and it deserves to have control of its town hall.

It’s an important, iconic building and it’s in the right place.

“It can be reached by bus, it has parking

next door, it is in the town centre and it’s close to the seafront."

THe town hall's foundation stones were laid 90 years ago this week. THe Clarence Road building became the civic centre for the Bognor Regis Urban District Council until 1974. THe council was abolished in a national shake-up and the town hall was transferred to Arun.

f The French students with their recycled plastic instruments FRENCH students used instruments from recycled plastic in Bognor Regis to drum home the message about marine pollution.

THe 65 children from Louis de Chappedelaine Secondary School near Lamballe in Normandy performed their tune in the London Road precinct.

THeir performance came during their week-long stay in this country as part of a project for World Oceans Day on June 8.

One of the students, Romane Bazin, 14, said: "I think pollution is the same in France because we share the same sea.

"We are taking the opportunity of this

trip to spread the message that pollution is not a French problem. It is not a British problem. It is a worldwide problem.

"Plastic kills mammals, marine animals and the marine ecosystem. Fish eat plastic and we eat fish."

THe performance, called a batucada, arranged by music teacher Marie-Helene Coupard, took place at the junction of the precinct and High Street last Wednesday.

Students followed this with a litterpicking session on the beach to create beach art from the items they found and handed out leaflets to passers-by explaining their work.

Valerian Aoutin, 13, another of the pupils, said: "Some people have been surprised by our actions and the fact we are French pupils. Some people have had a bad reaction because they didn't know why we were here."

One of the six teachers with the students, Stephane Le Moal, said the school visited Britain each year for its project.

"We did some research and Bognor Regis seemed a nice place to come to.

"It's a smaller town and I wanted people to be involved in our action. It's important for young people to have this awareness.

Work would also be carried out to increase the policing presence in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton town centres, as well as elsewhere, to return the streets to residents, traders and visitors, he said.

Cllr Dr James Walsh (Beach) is the longest-serving member of Arun, having first been elected in 1976.

He was put forward by Lib Dem Cllr Francis Oppler with a list of his accomplishments since Cllr Dr Walsh had moved to Rustington as a GP in 1973. THese included two spells as the town mayor of Littlehampton, playing a leading role in West Sussex County Council and being recognised by the Queen for his voluntary service with St John Ambulance.

Cllr Tony Dixon, the Independents' leader, said: "For many years, Cllr Dr Walsh has been the best councillor on this council.

"I am absolutely delighted to see him have the opportunity to be the leader. I am confident he will lead a very successful council."

Arun's deputy leader will be Cllr Oppler and the other cabinet members are: Cllr Martin Lury (planning), Cllr Mrs Pauline Gregory (residential services), Cllr Dan Purchese (neighbourhood services), Cllr Matt Stanley (technical services) and Cllr Gill Yeates (community wellbeing).

Arun's membership is 22 Lib Dem, 21 Conservative, eight Independent, two Green and one Labour.

A FRESH start has been promised by the new leader of Arun District Council.

Cllr Dr James Walsh became the first Liberal Democrat to occupy the role of the council's most senior member when his appointment was announced at its annual meeting on Wednesday.

In an emotional speech, he said the results of the elections three weeks earlier showed a clear desire by residents for change. THey had decisively voted against the previous rock solid Conservative administration to make the Lib Dems the majority party.

"THese are exciting times and I relish the opportunity with support from the strong Independent groups and Greens the opportunity we have to deliver change in the Arun district for the benefit of all our residents.

"I intend this council to be much more open, much more transparent and much more genuinely consultative on all matters with all of our residents," he said.

THis process began with the webcasting of the meeting. Many more would also be broadcast, he said.

"I want to look at outstanding commitments. THe commitment to build 250 council houses over the next ten years - I want to look at whether we can double that to 500 council houses over the next ten years.

"I also want to make sure we have a real look at development in the district to make sure we put infrastructure ahead of new housing everywhere

` Hotel parking PARKING controls are proposed at a Bognor Regis hotel.

ParkingEye has applied for planning permission and listed building consent to install equipment at the Grade II-listed Royal Norfolk Hotel.

THe automatic number plate recognition system is intended to stop the hotel's 70 spaces being misused.

A statement by applicant, Jaden Fish, of ParkingEye, says: "THe proposal seeks to provide management of the existing car park to reduce car park abuse and ensure that spaces are available for genuine site users."

Some hotel guests had been unable to park at the premises on THe Esplanade because the spaces had been wrongly occupied, he said.

THe equipment will include a 5m camera column, 3m signage poles and a pay and display machine.

` Felpham chairman A UNANIMOUS vote saw Cllr Dave Smart chosen again to lead Felpham Parish Council.

He first became the council's chairman in 2017. His latest election was unanimous. Cllr Gloria Moss was chosen, also unanimously, as his vice-chairman.

` Handbag stolen A THIEF smashed a window of a vehicle parked in Park Lane, Slindon, and stole a handbag from 1pm to 1.30pm on May 10.

In Church Hill in the village, various tools were stolen from a site between May 3 and 7.

Police action against drugs SCORES of arrests were made in Sussex Police's latest pressure on drug dealers in towns like Bognor Regis.

Last week saw its officers carry out 12 warrants, make 29 arrests and seize more than ÂŁ10,000-worth of class A drugs as well as 36 mobile phones.

During the week, safeguarding action was also taken to support 26 vulnerable people and 43 visits were made to addresses where people were at risk of being cuckooed to check on their safety.

THe action was taken against county lines drug dealers who are known to exploit residents in the larger coastal towns around Sussex, such as Bognor Regis and Worthing.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Rayland said: "We are continuing to disrupt dealers who try to deal dangerous drugs across our communities and are targeting those who use children to sell drugs or those who buy drugs from children.

"Our work will continue relentlessly, targeting those who would bring harm to local people, including often the most vulnerable, and this is the result of just one week's activity.

"Local crime is often a direct result of major drug distribution via county lines and, by working together with partners to shed a light on this often hidden crime, we are sending a message to drug dealers that they cannot expect to go undetected in Sussex."

County lines is a term used by the police and their partner agencies to refer to

drug networks, both gangs and organised crime groups, from large urban areas like London who use children, young people and vulnerable adults to carry out illegal activity on their behalf.

THe extent of the criminal exploitation of children and vulnerable adults makes county lines especially damaging, though gangs dealing drugs is not a new problem.

THe organised crime groups tend to use a property in the area, known as cuckooing, in which they are dealing as a base for their activities.

Police continue to see children being exploited by criminal gangs to supply drugs in Sussex.

Children have been made to travel from London as well as children who live in Sussex being used.

"We use the range of legal powers to tackle this problem," said Ch Insp Rayland, ranging from the Misuse of Drugs Act to modern slavery and human trafficking legislation and technological advances through the use of drug dealing telephone restriction orders.

"We also work closely with other agencies to support those vulnerable adults and children who are exploited by county line gangs.

"THis includes regular visits to those adults at risk of cuckooing and raising awareness with those agencies engaged with children to ensure that information is shared effectively to prevent young people being drawn in to this criminality."

Peter to lead new start for council NEW Pagham Parish Council chairman Peter Atkins has pledged to look at ways to improve its links with residents.

Cllr Atkins was chosen unanimously by his fellow members at their annual meeting last week. THe session was the first for some 25 years in which the late Ray Radmall was missing from either the chairman or deputy chairman positions after his death last March.

Cllr Atkins, pictured above, said: "I feel that the communication between the parish council and the village is going to be a lot more difficult than it was.

"I have some huge footsteps to follow.

Ray was an expert at talking to people.

He knew every villager and he knew every character.

"THis chairman does not yet, though I will get to know as many people as I possibly can. One of the things that will run during this year is about how to engage with people.

"We had seven electors at our annual electors' meeting last week and we face a long, uphill struggle to get people involved.

"THe politicians at the top are not running the world very well. We must do a better job here."

Cllr Atkins said social media was one means by which the parish council could ensure its messages were publicised. It would also enable residents to directly inform the council about their views.

But he said it had as many negative points as it did positive ones.

"We will think of any means we can to communicate with people. But it's not

Cllr Atkins began to get to know Pagham in 1996 with his horticultural work at the Barfoots of Botley's Sefter Farm. He moved to the area in 1999 and has been the yacht club's commodore for eight years.

He briefly led the council immediately after Mr Radmall's death in the absence of the then deputy chairman, Cllr David Huntley.

Cllr Huntley became acting chairman until the annual meeting when he was elected as the new vice-chairman. He said: "I am going to enjoy being Peter's right-hand man and assisting him when he needs me."

THe election was the first act of Cllr Atkins as the chairman. He cast the deciding vote after a 2-2 tie between Cllrs Huntley and Dawn Salter.

Jeanette is town's first Lib Dem to be council chairman AN UNOPPOSED election has seen the first Liberal Democrat councillor from Bognor Regis become the Arun district's first citizen.

Cllr Jeanette Warr (Hotham) was chosen as Arun District Council's chairman at its annual meeting on Wednesday.

She is only the second Lib Dem to occupy the figurehead role - after longserving Lib Dem Cllr Dr James Walsh from Littlehampton in 2003 - since Arun was formed in 1974.

THe election was carried out by secret ballot in line with Arun's rules and followed the Lib Dem's unprecedented success in becoming the majority party on the council for the first time in the elections earlier this month.

Cllr Mrs Warr said: "I would like to say I am delighted to become chairman of Arun District Council. I consider it to be a great honour and I thank you very much for the opportunity.

"I am looking forward to this being a fair and respectful council as we all work together to deliver the best for Arun's residents."

She said she would reserve her formal statement after her reception at the next full council meeting in July.

But she thanked her predecessor, Cllr Alan Gammon, for his hard work in the past year.

"THis also seems an ideal opportunity to welcome all our new councillors and also those that are returning for another four years of service.

"At this time, I would like to formally

recognise the hard work and dedication of all those councillors who either chose not to stand or were not successful in the recent elections for their service to this council," she said.

Cllr Mrs Warr, of Lidsey Lane, North Bersted, added she would be backing the monthly charity fundraising of Arun's staff rather than following the tradition of nominating a single good cause for the coming year.

THe nomination for Cllr Mrs Warr was made by her fellow Lib Dem, Cllr Francis Oppler. He said she was the perfect person to lead the start of a new era for Arun.

She had entered local politics in 1990 after organising a protest against the closure of Marks & Spencer in Bognor Regis town centre.

"Since then, Jeanette has been an amazing champion for Bognor Regis.

She has served on the town council for 24 years," he said.

"She has served as the town mayor for three occasions and has been at the heart of everything that happens at the town council. During that time, Jeanette has led a number of campaigns."

Her eight years as an Arun councillor meant she was known to its officers and familiar with the council's structure.

Her deputy chairman will be Lib Dem Cllr Amanda Worne (Yapton).

Cllr Oppler also made the nomination and said he was in awe of the way she had transformed her life after a serious cycling accident.

In recent years, Arun has sought other potential uses for the town hall, such as an hotel, as part of its plans for the town's regeneration.

“I know the town hall needs improving but the town council could do that once it knows it has a long-term future there. We can’t make those decisions about investments with the present situation," said Cllr Brooks.

“It is a one-stop shop, with services such as Shopmobility and Citizens Advice based there, along with Arun and the town council.

“THis is a personal view but I hope the new district council will look favourably on this matter and at similar situations across the district.

“It is too early to discuss this at the moment but we need to keep the town hall, improve it and have it owned by the town council.”

Cllr Brooks said he would be repeating his call in the coming years for a new entertainment venue for Bognor Regis.

“I would also like us to have a large hall as part of our regeneration in which community and entertainment events can take place indoors – and we need more parking and green spaces, not less," he added.

THe current district council is the first to be run without a Conservative majority. THe election results left the council without a party in overall control to give the Independents a major role in getting recommendations put into effect.

RECORD-BREAKING students at Felpham Community College were given a heartfelt thanks for their hard work.

Elliott Nash, 16, a pupil at the college, told a presentation ceremony how much support Great Ormond Street Hospital had given his younger brother.

THe hospital was one of three equal recipients of a best-ever £5,940 from the college's latest charity week in its history of more than 40 years.

Elliott said: "Last October, my little brother had a heart transplant at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

"He was in there 98 days, 95 of those days were in the children's intensive care unit. It is an amazing hospital, with amazing doctors and nurses.

Macmillan regional fundraising manager Josh Munns told the students their donation would help to pay for two weeks' attendance by one of its nurses to a cancer patient and their family.

Diana Levantine, a founder of Sussex Snowdrop Trust 26 years ago, said: "Our nurses help children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses and their families. THey can be there for an hour, at the end of the phone or for longer.

"We pay the wages of those nurses and that's what we need the help for."

Last week's presentation was led by charity committee members Jasmine Petworth and Charlie Cogger.

Jasmine said: "I'm really happy that we have been the ones to set the new record. It's been nice to work with the whole school and meet new people.

"It's also been rewarding to see where the money is going."

Charlie said: "It's been amazing and such a good year. We'll be involved again next year."

f Members of Frank L'Alouette's family with the plaque

Plaque recalls photographer A PHOTOGRAPHER best known for his snapshot of Bognor Regis at war is to be honoured in the town.

A blue plaque was being installed this week to remember the work of Frank L'Alouette.

THe historic symbol signifies the site of his studio at 32 West Street from 1931-55.

Members of his family celebrated the unveiling of the plaque by the Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership Board, with Bognor Regis Town Council, on Sunday.

One of Mr L'Alouette's daughters, Jennie Hickman, said: "We are delighted with the plaque and surprised as well.

We are also proud of our father.

"When he and my mother started the business, they worked all day to build it up for the first five years until they started a family. One of their selling points was to offer photographs in just a few hours.

"I worked in the studio until I was 22 with a friend of mine who lives in Felpham, Joy Brown, now Bryant."

Mr L'Alouette was born in Windsor in 1901 and trained as a photographer's assistant. He moved to Bognor in the 1920s to work in the photography section of a chemist and branched out on his own at a time when cameras were becoming popular along with Bognor Regis as a tourist destination.

He worked as a general photographer for businesses, newspapers, portraits and weddings as well as developing and printing his work and selling photographic items.

Mr L'Alouette was unable to join the armed forces when the war started because of a hole-in-the-heart condition.

He instead applied for a Ministry of Information permit to enable him to photograph wartime events around the town.

His contacts enabled him to capture a south coast town, with its barbed wire beach and pier cut in half, as its residents endured life in the Second World War. His realistic shots showed the effects of frequent German air attacks and the hardships of an existence under rationing. He continued to run his business after the war before he retired around 1956 and passed away in 1968.

Helping to launch the plaque, town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall said: "THose who knew him recalled a warm, friendly man who was cheerful, resourceful and energetic in his work."

Mr L'Alouette was put forward for the plaque by town resident Jason Passingham. He said: "Frank L'Alouette is the one person in Bognor Regis who has captured the town the most in photographs. He didn't just take pictures of buildings. He took a lot of pictures of people - what they doing and what they were wearing.

"He captured that moment in time just before and after the Second World War." THe plaque is the second to be installed by the board and council after one recalling architect John Hawes at THe White Tower in Aldwick Road. A total of ten plaques will form a heritage trail.

Architects Sloane & Brown have compiled a planning application and a listed building consent to enable the work to be carried out.

It will include reinstating missing pieces of ornamental metalwork, redecorating the entire structure, moving the entrance gate from the south elevation to the west elevation and laying non-slip tiles in a geometric pattern to replace the concrete floor.

Phil Brown, of Sloane & Brown, says in a statement: "THe building is generally in good structural

condition, but some isolated repairs are required to various areas which have deteriorated in condition.

"THe structure of the building shall be repaired as necessary, and the proposed work would provide a fully appropriate sustainable long-term future for the bandstand."

THe bandstand is a Grade II-listed structure. It was built in 1920 for the council in Cheltenham and bought by the then Bognor Regis council in 1948.

It is owned by Arun District Council, which could allow it to be used for removable seating for a proposed nearby cafe.

A DERELICT property in Bognor Regis has been turned into homes.

THe unwanted two-bedroom flat and the ground-floor commercial unit in London Road had been empty since 2010.

It has been refurbished and extended by its new owner to create living spaces for up to four families.

THey will be let by Arun District Council's housing options team after having become a centre of antisocial behaviour.

A council spokesman said: "THese homes will now be occupied by local people in housing need.

"Empty homes are often properties which cause ongoing concerns for the community which was the case in this instance.

"THe council received a number of complaints from the public due to the poor condition of this property."

Negotiations with its previous owner proved unsuccessful in spite of many

attempts to talk informally to encourage work to begin on the property.

"No progress was made to improve conditions, make the property safe and bring it back into habitable use within a reasonable amount of time.

"THerefore, the council's empty homes officer took formal enforcement action," said the spokesman.

"In August, 2016, an improvement notice under the Housing Act 2004 was served on the legal owners.

"THe property was sold to a company who began the extensive renovations, creating the four separate selfcontained flats.

"THe council's empty homes officer has been to visit the property and can confirm that the renovations have been completed and the improvement notice fully complied with."

Ride support puts arcade in the pink SHOP owners in Bognor Regis' historic arcade displayed their support for the Pink Pub to Pegasus Bridge Bike Ride.

It was a unanimous decision by all the proprietors in THe Arcade to hang pink bunting and banners to advertise the charity event in aid of All Call Signs.

MP told about parking fears RESIDENTS concerned about overnight sleeping on Bognor Regis seafront have met the town's MP. Members of the Marine Drive West Residents' Action Group got together to tackle the problem of camper vans and motor homes parking overnight along the road, with people cooking and sleeping overnight in their vehicles.

MP Nick Gibb arranged for West Sussex County Council highways officers to be present at the session.

He said: "It is unacceptable for people to live in their motor homes directly in front of people's houses and flats.

"As well as constituting an eyesore, cooking with Calor Gas cylinders in the confined space of a van in the

highway is felt by residents to be a serious safety hazard.

"THe plan is to seek support to amend the Traffic Regulations Order to ban motor homes from Marine Drive West for specific periods, including overnight.

"THis would be enforced by traffic wardens who would make spot checks in the early morning or at night.

"I believe that residents should be able to enjoy their properties without having to face the problem of camper vans parking overnight in front of their homes.

James is fastest man in town - again JAMES BAKER lived up to his number one entry with another victory in the Bognor Prom 10k road race.

James crossed the finishing line first for the fourth time - and the 889th time in his remarkable running career.

He said: "I had sinusitis for two weeks and didn't run for ten days. I've come back and won my sixth race in nine days.

"It's another win towards my goal of 1,000 wins in various runs and races.

"I've always been in the top three here since 2003 and I've come first in 2003, 2007, 2011 and now today. I also think I'm the oldest runner to win at the age of 42."

THe Chichester Runner, and Chichester resident, clocks up some 100 miles a week training after he leaves work in a mayonnaise making factory and embarks on circuits around Kingley Vale nature reserve and Staunton Country Park.

"I was pleased to win today with the runner behind snapping at my heels but that's all part of competition," he added.

James finished in a provisional 33mins 25 secs. Just four seconds behind was his fellow Chichester Runner William Boultwood. THird place was claimed, in 33:40 by Jamie Corbett, of Worthing and District Harriers.

THe Worthing club claimed the women's winner of Sunday's race in Hellen Buller, who also lives in the town.

She said: "THis is my first time at this race. It's a really nice course and I'm really happy with the wind. I'd heard bad things about the wind being against you when you are running back along the prom.

"It was great to have the women's runner-up so close behind me. It's nice

to have someone to have a race with.

It makes a big difference rather than running with just the men. I'll be back next year - but I'll check the weather forecast first to find out about that wind."

Helen's time was given as 38:00 in the results on the day. Haywards Heath Harriers member Emma Navesey was the second woman home in 38:16.

Kari Mack, of Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners, was third in 39:12.

THis helped the runners to be the top women's team and the men's was Chichester Runners.

THe race was the 25th to be staged and attracted a record 1,850 starters. Among them were the first two wheelchair entrants in its history. THe first home in 37:57 was Bognor Regis resident Philip King. THe civil servant, 49, broke his back in a fall 14 years ago.

He said: "THis is not about the winning.

I've taken part to raise awareness of wheelchair racing. I hope there will be four entries next year and eight the year after.

"I was hoping to get round in 35 minutes but I haven't been training for a couple of weeks because of a problem with my shoulder. I usually go out at weekends. I often go along the cycle path to Littlehampton which opened last year and is a nice route."

THe race's first blind runners joined the wheelchair start. Keith Turner, 51, of Brighton-based Arena Runners, was the first home in 44:59 with his guide, Jim Roberts.

He said: "It was great the organisers let us start with the wheelchair entrants rather than the other runners. It made a massive difference to us getting

round the course."

THe race was the third to be held by Tone Zone Runners, with help from Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, whose members started it in the mid-1990s.

THe course from West Park to Felpham and back again has stayed largely unchanged as the race has become the largest sporting event in the town.

As always, taking part was all that mattered for some runners. Chichester man Michael Neville, 41, ran as a turtle in the 50-strong Dash4Dexter team to support the family of two-year-old Dexter Richardson, of Bognor Regis.

"Dexter has undergone a successful operation in Southampton hospital to have a kidney with a tumour removed," he said.

"My daughter, Snowdrop, six, had a year of chemotherapy last year so I know what his family are going through and we wanted to show them we are thinking of them."

Race director Jude Bazeley said she was delighted with the day. "We've had the largest number of starters and the junior fun run, held on the same course for the first time, was sold out at 200 entrants.

"Hopefully, our charity partner, Parents and Carers Support Organisation, will have done well as well.

"THe partnership between us and the Rotary club works really well. We can bring a different element to the day because we are runners and know what runners want.

"We'll be back next year on the same weekend," she said.

Show dazzles audience at group's spectacular night

YOUNG creators seized the chance to display their talents at a Bognor Regis group’s first drama presentation evening.

THe visionary spectacular showcase provided the perfect showtime for the Create members, known as Creators.

It featured music and drama to the delight of the watching audience at the Phoenix Centre in Westloats Lane.

Awards were also presented to highlight the efforts of some members.

Dr Irene Campbell, acting chairman of Create, said: “THis cultural evening was a great platform to showcase the talent and potential of the young members of Create to a full house of parents and guests, including Bersted Parish Council chairman Brian Knight.

“It launched an exciting period for Create, whose work will develop and grow in order to help more children in the town to recognise and develop their path in life.”

Create was started last year through an initiative by Bognor Regis Town Council with the help of Sussex Clubs for Young People.

Among its projects in the past year was a mural in the pedestrian and cycle subway between the London Road car park and Upper Bognor Road.

THe presentation evening included the song, To Make You Feel My Love, and scenes from THe Suitcase Kid, THe Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Goodnight Mr Tom and Fault.

Awards were given to: Amber Gregory,

for her kindness and hard work; Holly Gregory, for being a positive role model; Jazz Schneider for positive contribution; Mia Korbal-Krentz for her hard work and positive attitude; and Sky Appleton for personal development.

A young lad, Chris Massey, received an award for dedication and commitment,

an environmental award and the special award, with a voucher for a free pass to this year’s summer camp and his expenses.

Chris cleaned some graffiti from the subway mural on his own initiative.

He was also the first Creator and has attended the club every week.

THe members spoke of their enjoyment at attending Create. One said it raised their confidence. Another described it as a cool time.

Chris Cooke, from Sussex Clubs for Young People, said: “THis was a spectacular event. All of you should be very proud.”

Fun run success on town's race day YOUNG runners became a firm part of race day for the first time at the Bognor Prom 10k on Sunday.

THe runs had previously taken place solely along the seafront well before the main race started.

But the organisers at Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners decided to stage the 1.5k race from the start and finish along Silverston Avenue.

A total of 195 youngsters took part to the delight of race director Jude Bazeley.

She said: "We will be keeping the fun run as part of the main route.

"I think it worked well and I hope we get more children taking part next year."

THe winner of the fun run was Cerys Dickinson, 14, followed by Laila Hellyer, 11, and Ollie Pickett, 14.

Snowdrop walkers raise thousands PEOPLE from across Bognor Regis and Chichester joined in an annual walk for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust last weekend.

THe event saw a record number of children completing the walk at Arundel Castle Park with families attending in their hundreds to support this special event.

THe walk is now in its 22nd year thanks to the generosity of the Duke of Norfolk in allowing the trust to hold the event on the Norfolk estate.

Di Levantine, chairman and co-founder of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, said: "It is incredible how much the walk has grown in popularity over the years. It continues to be a highlight for many Snowdrop families.

"Some walk in memory of a loved one, others gather friends and family for this ideal meeting spot.

"Here, they have the opportunity to all enjoy a gentle walk. Many of the toddlers

are in prams or riding a scooter with the family dog in tow!

"We value the support of local schools, the community and businesses so much.

We need to raise over £350,000 a year and we are very grateful to those who volunteered and supported on the day, which has generated over £6,000 so far in fundraising."

Snowdrop mum, Joanna Cowell, who went to the event, said: “THe walk was a really great fun day out for the family.

Anything that raises funds and awareness of the absolutely amazing work that Snowdrop does is a good thing. THe Snowdrop nurses continue to be a great source of friendly support and knowledge for our family during Leo's diagnosis and treatment. I really don't know what we would do without them, they make such a difference to the whole family."

f Dangerous chargers have been uncovered by Trading Standards

Unsafe products AN INVESTIGATION by West Sussex Trading Standards has uncovered dangerous chargers and toys being sold in the county.

In the last year, officers made 25 visits to independent shops to carry out test purchases.

Of the 23 different phone chargers sent for testing, nine failed to comply with safety standards, seven were at risk of causing electric shocks and two failed due to labelling issues.

Four cheap toys were also investigated and two failed the tests – one for safety reasons and the other because of incorrect labelling.

In all cases the importer was based outside West Sussex so officers are continuing to investigate with the assistance of other Trading Standards services across the country. Local outlets are also taking steps to recall the unsafe products.

Council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "Using unsafe electrical products can have serious consequences and at worst could be fatal.

"Our Trading Standards team have done some excellent work over the last year putting a stop to the sale of these products and I would like to thank them for all their hard work."

Peter Aston, Trading Standards team manager, said: "THese results are of great concern to us and work in this area will be stepped up.

“Our recent prosecutions against businesses found to be selling or supplying unsafe electrical products demonstrate that the courts view this very seriously.”

` Independence A SERIES of new videos showcasing just some of the support available to help people maintain their independence have been launched on the county council’s YouTube page.

THere are more than 197,000 residents aged 65 and over living in West Sussex, with people wanting to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

With this in mind, the council has created a suite of new videos that offer top tips to help people stay independent in later life.

THe videos have been designed to provide information on the range of equipment available to support people struggling with everyday tasks. THe videos are quite short and very easy to watch.

Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for adults and health, said: “Many residents I speak to don’t realise just how beneficial the range of equipment could be to support them in their own homes. Simple things such as a bed rail, chair raisers or a bath board could make a huge difference to their lives.

“I would encourage everyone, no matter your age or background, to take a look at the videos – you never know when they may come in handy.

You might also know someone such as an older relative or family friend, who might benefit from some of the equipment mentioned.”

Assertive action for social workers WEST Sussex County Council will take ‘assertive action’ to sift out social workers who are not up to the job.

THe news was shared at a scrutiny meeting days after Ofsted published a damning report into the council’s inadequate children’s services.

THe trade union Unison said staff would take the news as a ‘kick in the teeth’ and accused the authority of passing the blame for the poor report down the chain of command.

Sarah Daly, the council’s head of children’s social care, told the meeting: “We know that we have social workers within our department who are probably not able to do the job no matter what support we offer.

“We have to work to identify those workers and take the action that we need to take with those workers.”

Ms Daly said support had to be given to workers who were unable to do their jobs because of ‘other impacting factors’ and that it was important to understand the difference between the two.

She added: “We have already started to work closely with colleagues in human resources to take assertive action where required with those social workers within who are not performing safely with our children.”

In its report, Ofsted described most social work practice in West Sussex as ‘weak’, adding: “Continual turnover in the workforce and high caseloads severely limit the local authority’s ability to achieve a consistently acceptable standard of social work practice.”

It was a point raised by Caroline Fife, Unison regional organiser.

She said: “Social workers are facing huge demands with ever-increasing caseloads and more complex needs.”

She said the union had not been told that there was any need for action to be taken against any staff.

THere was a Unison representative present at the meeting when Ofsted’s report was discussed.

Ms Fife said: “THe council’s top managers spent close to zero time in the select committee fronting up for the failures of strategic leadership which Ofsted laid out so clearly.

“Yet they have accused staff of not being able to do the job before they have even properly examined all the factors that makes social work so difficult in the current funding climate and specifically at West Sussex.

“It smacks of a desire to pass the blame down the chain of command.”

Providing a greater understanding and awareness of the British Army

11th Infantry Brigade hosted the evening, with Colonel Simon Browne and Colonel James Sunderland answering questions from the audience.

THe brigade has regional responsibility for the south east of England and their headquarters is based in Aldershot.

THe brigade prevents conflict through overseas defence engagement, protects the UK and maintains strong links, locally, regionally and nationally in the UK. THe presentation showcased some of the ongoing work by the British Army

and listened to concerns and questions by the attendees.

Speaking exclusively to the Chichester Post about the effects of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on young soldiers, Col Browne said: "To say we don't have mental health issues would be wrong but we have a whole load of steps that we have learned over the past recent years in order to build up people's mental resilience.

"One of the the things we know for a fact is that we have a lower rate of PTSD than any of the blue light services. Within the whole of the military it's about 2.8-3 per cent, much higher in units involved with direct combat. My concern is that we also have other significant issues in the army. Depression and adjustment disorders for people who leave or come back from combat. We reckon a quarter of soldiers will suffer at some stage of

some form of depression."

THe presentation also contained details about the Armed Forces Covenant.

THis is a pledge to acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.

West Sussex County council was one of the first councils to sign up to the Military Covenant in the South East, and now holds silver status.

Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council said: "We very much support these events. It's great to hear about the army and how they look after their.

"It's been a great evening, really informative and I've been glad to have been a part of it."

Special tribute to D-Day fliers D-DAY pilots in North Bersted have been remembered by an RAF air crew.

Members of 1310 Flight landed a Chinook helicopter at Jubilee Playing Fields to pay their respects to those who flew from the site 75 years ago.

THe memorial service took place on the former dispersal area of the advanced landing ground alongside Chalcraft Lane where 1310 Flight was based in 1944 flying Avril Ansons.

It was arranged by the RAFA's Bognor Regis branch as part of its close links with the flight.

Branch chaplain, the Rev Brian Shersby, said it was important to appreciate the sacrifices made by past and present members of the RAF.

"THe airfield was used to evacuate the wounded and ferry blood and other medical supplies to Normandy after D-Day," he said.

"About 100 tents were around the airfield accommodating the wounded before they could be moved to nearby hospitals in Chichester, Petworth and Midhurst by a fleet of ambulances."

1310 Flight was disbanded at the advanced landing ground on July 21, 1944, and the site and its two steel mesh runways reverted to farmland in September, 1945.

1310 Flight has been reformed and disbanded several times but, in recent years, has served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some of its members are in Mali, helping French air forces in the African country.

THe 20-minute commemoration service on Saturday morning included three prayers, a Bible reading from the Book of John, the Last Post and the Kohima epitaph.

ABOUT 300 people gathered for the rare sight of a Chinook helicopter landing in North Bersted.

THe occasion marked 75 years since airmen based at the area's advanced landing ground had helped to support the Allied forces on D-Day in June, 1944, and the following days and weeks.

Bognor Regis' RAFA branch has supported 1310 Flight, based at RAF Odiham, for years but the much longer connection with its role at the landing ground was a coincidence.

Wing Commander Matt Baker, of 1310 Flight, said: "What is really nice is that the Bognor Regis RAFA branch look after us when we are abroad.

THey send us everything from cakes to shower gels. All the guys and girls really love that.

"We've come here today because it is important to us to show our thanks, not just to the RAFA, but to the people of Bognor who support it.

"To have the connection that 1310 Flight was also based here in the Second World War to remember also makes it very important to be here."

Some 15 members of 2351 Squadron RAF Air Cadets took part in the service.

THe Last Post was sounded by Cadet Jake Lott, 13. He said: "It was a bit nerve-wracking but I thought it went well. It was the first time I had played the Last Post on a trombone."

THe air crew welcomed those present onboard the helicopter before it took off after about two hours.THe occasion was followed by an official event at the RAFA Club in Waterloo Square for some members of 1310 Flight.

THis was the second time a Chinook had landed at Jubilee Playing Fields.

THe previous occasion was about 20 years ago and saw Air Cadets given flights in the helicopter.

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK

Pick of the litter with the best films May 24-30

VOX LUX, a fascinating chronicle of America in the 21st century, with Natalie Portman and Jude Law, kicks off in 1999 with an upsettingly rendered Columbine-style high school massacre, then uses the journey of one of its survivors, Celeste, to take the pulse of the country as she becomes a stadium-filling pop-star, played by a jaded, damaged Portman after going off the rails in the intervening years.

Director Brady Corbet takes an unflinching look at fame, the score, by Scott Walker (of The Walker Brothers), sensational.

In the cryptically named Dragged Across Concrete, which opened at the Venice Film Festival last year to critical acclaim, Mel Gibson plays Brett Ridgeman, a pushing 60 cop who has failed to move with the times as he pounds the pavement in the crime-ridden town of Bulwark.

It’s this refusal to see how the world has changed since the '70s which sees Ridgeman and co-cop Anthony Lurasetti (Vince Vaughn) suspended without pay when their interrogating methods are leaked to the press. Rather than re-evaluate their world view, they decide to redress the imbalance in the world by taking things into their own hands – via the criminal underworld.

THE roar of engines will fill the sky above Goodwood’s historic aerodrome building while an array of aircraft will be on display including gliders, a Pilatus PC-12, and Westland Wasp, as a free aviation open day is held. THe event will enable visitors to climb aboard aircraft and meet the pilots, as well as the chance to experience the thrills of flying in a fighter jet in the MACH 3 Simulator.

Aside from aviation, there will be tether hot air balloon flights, while the new Goodwood Aerodrome Café features a

Museum Exhibition ‘Harriers and the 69 Air Race’ Tangmere Aviation Museum Gamecock Terrace, Tangmere, Chichester PO20 2ES Tel: 01243 790090 Email: info@tangmere-museum.org.uk www.tangmere-museum.org.uk IN 1919, 100 years ago, Captain Alcock and Lieutenant Whitten-Brown made the first aerial crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a Vickers Vimy bomber aircraft. THe challenge had been sponsored by the Daily Mail newspaper. In May, 1969, the Daily Mail sponsored another race, this time between the Empire State building in New York and the Post Office Tower in London.

To mark the 50th anniversary of this 1969 Transatlantic Air Race and 100 years since the Alcock and Whitten-Brown crossing, the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is running a temporary exhibition at the museum until July 31, focusing on the subsonic jet category and in particular the performance of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier ‘jump-jet’ aircraft, then new to the RAF. Two Harriers took part in the race and the museum is proud to own one of them, XV744. In addition to information display boards about the race there are models, colouring for children, a film of the Harriers in the race and a film on ‘How to fly a Harrier’.

THe expectations on them are higher than ever before to achieve phenomenal results and strive to the top, so let’s take a bit of the pressure off for them by offering ways to cope.

When we get stressed, we start to deplete ourselves of essential vitamins and minerals, and particularly when we produce adrenalin, (because of fear) our magnesium starts to deplete. THis can affect our blood pressure, heart rhythms,

muscle tension etc and has a knock-on effect on the way we feel.

Our nervous system ideally needs to stay calm and in control under exam conditions, and if we are depleted in one of the very minerals that helps to keep us calm, it could result in anxiety and even depression.

When magnesium levels are low, we also produce less serotonin, which can then contribute to low mood and tiredness. During exam times, it’s good to be feeling as positive, calm and in control as possible.

A fabulous remedy for immediately putting magnesium back into the bloodstream is a magnesium oil spray which you can simply spray directly onto your skin. It may feel slightly tingly at first, but as your body becomes less depleted, the tingling sensation will reduce. If you think about how it works,

Guides provide snapshots of holidays past Information is a glimpse into the lives and entertainments of previous decades SEASIDE entertainment has taken many forms during the history of our town. I have been looking through some old programmes and holiday guides, as we approach our summer season, and thought I would share them with you this week.

One undated programme, possibly early 1900s, advertised the Skating Rink, in the Assembly Rooms. We know this building today as the Picturedrome. THere was to be a Fancy Dress Carnival judged by Dr and Mrs. Tidcombe, Mrs Holmes, Lieut J Hancock and J Haviland.

THe event was taking place from 7pm until 8.30pm with ‘ordinary skating to follow. THis single sheet of advertising shows 12 separate competitions, finishing with God Save THe King. THe programme cost 1d (0.5p) and was printed by Webster and Webb. So much information about the town in a small onesided piece of paper, with no advertising.

By 1910, the same carnival had built into a larger event, complete with advertising for Harry Mann’s annual sale at his drapery and millinery premises in London Road.

THe advertisements within programmes certainly provide a complete snapshot to the town, some of which even provide prices, which I always find interesting. For example, ‘Commer Car Motor Char-a-Bancs’ ran trips to places of local interest. THe company was

eventually sold to the Southdown Coach Company, which was bought by Stagecoach.

At the time of the programme it would cost you 2/6d (12.5p) to travel to Arundel, Goodwood and Selsey Bill. Brighton was only 5/- (25p).

Another advertisement which catered for our entertainment was ‘Wood’, Kodak Specialist, situated in the High Street.

THey dealt with photographic, sports and stationery supplies.

THe range of goods include fishing tackle, model aeroplanes, roller skates, water wings, kites also a wide range of Kodak items. One other advertisement I thought was interesting, was for ‘Power Cigarettes’, a shop in THe Arcade.

In 1938, a programme was issued for the ‘Band Enclosure’ where the Municipal Orchestra played daily at 3pm and 8pm with its programme of entertainment.

I did find it interesting that on a Sunday at 11.45am there were ‘Gramophone Recitals,’ sounds interesting!

Admission to these events was 3d (less than (2.5p) or a season ticket cost 17/6d (88p) but this did include listening to the orchestra and for comfort you had a chair. It was only 10/6d (53p) for the orchestra only, if you decided to stand.

Pavilion THeatre, where there was dancing twice a week between 11pm and 2am. THe admission charge was only 1/6d. Also in 1938 there were advertisements for Pierrotland where Eric Ross was appearing in Dazzle.

THe late 1940s town guides were still promoting the town, with the logo of THe Royal Key to Health following King George V’s visit in 1929. THere were a lower number of advertisements for trades within the town but a large number of hotels.

THe Royal Norfolk was advertising it was re-opening in March, 1948, and had central heating throughout after a complete interior rebuilt with gay lounges and a cocktail bar.

THe restaurant had first class cuisine, wines and dancing. THere would have still been certain items under rationing from the war, but the promotion of good food would have been very welcome. I was intrigued to read that there was 'a telephone in every room and a novel signal system eliminating bells!'

THe guide began to evolve and included more of the surrounding areas, but still continued with its statistics of sunshine and rainfall figures and the birth and death rate, which I always found interesting! Lists of organisations, churches, sports clubs and recreation prevailed.

THe advent of Butlin’s holiday camp in 1960, with accommodation for 5,000 guests, and the other sites around the town, such as the very popular Riveria Lido, which had opened in 1938 but was closed in the 1980s, brought more visitors. THere were also many caravan sites, which started to change the appreciation of accommodation and the associated entertainment available within these sites to entice people to their premises, compared with hotels, without entertainment.

In the 1970s one of the main areas of

entertainment was, of course, the Esplanade THeatre, across the road from the Royal Norfolk Hotel. Regular programmes extolled the virtues of the many shows that were held under the title of Dazzle Old Tyme Music Hall, a very popular destination. Other events were promoted such as the Hotham Park bandstand music and, three days per week, ‘Dancing on the lawns,’ with seats at 5p. It was also possible to enter senior and children’s talent competitions in the summer marquee.

THe increased ability to travel abroad with the rise of cheaper air flights, saw the English seaside holiday inevitably change from the traditional bed and breakfast, Saturday to Saturday holiday.

By the start of the new millennium, the guides had reduced to A5 in size and included much more text on the various events of which the town were becoming more recognised for, like Sands of Time and the Birdman rally, but sadly a decline in the number of hotels advertising, from the 1960s heyday of over 60 premises offering holiday accommodation.

As technology has entered everyday life, for many environments, the internet has become the home of much more information, with less printed material available.

We should remember that people worked harder over longer hours in the past, had less free time and less entertainment available.

So, we should not necessarily wish for the past just try to imagine their enjoyment on the day.

Also would we want to partake of some of the entertainment of the past. Another loss is that future generations will be unable to look back at our lives with an old holiday guide or programme to view the advertisements and activities available to understand our way of life.

It has not yet been decided definitely how the King will make the journey. It is probable that the King and Queen will travel direct to Windsor by motor-car but it is understood that the King's medical advisors are considering the question of whether the King will be able to stand the fatigue of a long journey.

THursday, May 9 - THe King and Queen will leave Aldwick by motor-car for Windsor next Wednesday.

THe King, who was accompanied by Princess Victoria, paid a visit yesterday afternoon to Kind Edward VII Sanitorium at Midhurst, West Sussex, where over a hundred patients of both sexes are under treatment. His Majesty is a patron of the institution, and has always taken a keen interest in its work.

THis is the first journey of the kind which the King has made since he went to Aldwick. THe visit came as a complete surprise to both the staff and the patients of the sanatorium.

On leaving his car, the King visited the main building and some of the blocks, stopping to talk to several of the patients.

He afterwards walked in the grounds. He expressed himself very pleased with all that he had seen and with the way in which the sanatorium was conducted.

THe King was given an enthusiastic reception by the patients, with some of whom he had readily posed to be photographed.

On the same day, it was revealed the thanksgiving fund for the King's convalesence had reached £324,992. THe money was being given to the National Radium Fund and the King Edward's Hospital Fund.

WATER a way to spend the halfterm holiday in Aldingbourne!

THe Aldingbourne Country Centre has a fun-packed week of events for the whole family to enjoy.

THese include the return of its ever-popular splash about day on bank holiday Monday.

Becky Main, the centre's sales, marketing and PR officer, said: "It's all about kids' revenge and a chance for you, your friends and our staff to have a huge water fight.

"Also, new for 2019 we have our sand and water play area, where our younger visitors can have fun whilst learning within a variety of sand pits and water zones all located in a safe play area.

"We have a few buckets and spades available but it is advisable for children to bring their own."

Next Tuesday and Wednesday see the latest bounce about days with plenty

of jumping around on offer.

"Children can have fun bouncing around on a variety of different bouncy castles, tailored to different age groups, with one especially for children with disabilities," said Becky.

Falconry day on THursday will be hosted by First Class Falconry, with displays of birds of prey at selected times.

THere will also be the chance to ask questions about the birds and hold some of them.

THe final day on Friday will see reptile day, with Tom's Talking Reptiles, pictured above by Leah Moore.

It will provide an opportunity to learn about reptiles and experience handling spiders, lizards and snakes.

THe centre, north of the A27, is run by the Aldingbourne Trust charity.

It also has a woodland walk, open farm, mini golf course, wooden train and castle play area as well as a cafe.

SOME 80 people with sight problems will be helped throughout this year thanks to the fundraising work of unique students.

Bognor Regis-based 4Sight Vision Support has received £7,820 from members of the world's only undergraduate degree programme in fundraising at University of Chichester, pictured above.

It costs the charity, in Victoria Drive, an average of £95 a month to look after each of its more than 2,000 members. About 4,000 people from around West Sussex seek its help a year.

THe money came from four sell-out shows of Copacabanca at the 350-seat Regis Centre which the students staged with performing arts students at the university and other activities.

THey hope to take the final total to £20,000 if several applications for grants are successful.

University programme leader for charity development Donna Day Lafferty said: "THe students spend the first year of the course learning about the theory of fundraising. In the second year, they put the theory into practice. It's really important that they can put what they have learned into a real life situation."

Charity donations in general had still not recovered from the 2008/09 recession and government cutbacks had seen the voluntary sector take on more and more work, she said.

Olivia Bombardini, 21, one of the fundraising students, said: "I'm really, really happy with our donation. It's a massive achievement.

"We put a lot of hard work into our fundraising and we had some stressful times but it has worked out to a really good result. It's been good to work with a charity and put our lessons into practice."

4Sight Vision Support's marketing and communications officer, Jessica Benson, said: "THis is an incredible amount of money and it is going to make a huge difference to us. It will fund a variety of things from low vision sessions to social activities."

SHOPPERS in Bognor Regis with disabilities will benefit from the fundraising efforts of Arun District Council's outgoing chairman.

Alan Gammon, pictured above, brought his year in office to a close at a reception last week at which he presented cheques to his chosen charities during his year in office.

THis saw £1,448.17 each being presented to the Shopmobility schemes in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. THe money has been raised through various activities during the past year.

Mr Gammon said: "THis year has been an absolute privilege and an honour. I have met so many interesting and selfless people who have made me proud to represent the district.

"Having the Shopmobility schemes in Littlehampton and Bognor Regis as my chosen charities for the year has been a pleasure and my utmost thanks goes to all those who have generously donated and supported this cause.

Mr Gammon also presented the Chairman's Award 2019 in recognition of an outstanding contribution in the Arun district to Anne Cranham, who chairs the Hotham Park Heritage Trust.

Rosemary Warren was also presented with flowers and a certificate to acknowledge her work for the trust.

Dear Editor, THank you to the Bognor Regis Post for the recent article, 'Safety fears about mobile phone mast plan'.

THere does appear to be scientific disagreement on safety regarding this specific mobile technology in the UK and internationally.

Yes, indeed, Arun District Council needs to make decisions on a range of factors.

THe rollout is moving on fast forward with scant public and scientific debate. It appears there has been inadequate discussion by independent commentators from diverse academic backgrounds. I am hoping the Queensway, Bognor Regis planning application (BR/89/19/PL) submitted to Arun District Council by MBNL Limited will be rejected, on the grounds more time is needed to sort out any misinformation, exaggeration or incomplete reasoning coming from those both in favour of the 5G national rollout and those who have concerns.

More time to consider the potential health risks, to consider the path on which this technology may take us and to establish a level playing field for further broad-based research and thought.

A recent item on the Today Programme on Radio 4 (May 17), I believe was misleading the public with regard to 5G and climate change solutions as it did not give the full picture, only the advantages, not the

disadvantages and proposed alternative solutions.

THe issues are wide and I disagree with the comment made by one Bognor Regis town councillor the planning application cannot be rejected on the grounds of safety. If the planning rules hinder safety discussion, then change the planning rules.

I believe that only crossdisciplinary level playing field engagement will provide governments with solutions.

THis is a vast subject.

THe Environmental Health Trust, a US-based organisation, publishes articles in peer reviewed journals about controllable environmental health hazards if any readers are interested and wish to engage with policy makers.

THe organisation WiredChild and the Green Party (Berwick upon Tweed Constituency, Dr Rupert Read) can also be contacted if anyone has any general questions regarding their viewpoints. I understand the Green Party Berwick upon Tweed Constituency, has a proposal for a 5G moratorium motion.

I understand Arun District Council may or may not be able to consider written comments received after May 4, but it can be contacted regarding the date of the relevant planning meeting regarding the Bognor Regis 5G tower.

Dear Editor, I wish to respond to the letter last week which called for climate change to be urgently classified as an 'emergency'.

I'm (sadly) old enough to remember the 1970s when the scientific community was in complete agreement that the world was on a cooling trend, and that temperatures were about to plunge.

THe more pessimistic voices predicted this cooling would cause global famines before the end of the century, and

one of the cures suggested involved putting coal soot on the polar ice caps to melt them (Newsweek 1975) I'm not a climate change denier, maybe the scientists are right this time and we have got 12 years to save humanity from roasting to death; but society (thankfully for us) managed to avoid any kneejerk reactions in the 70s and I think it's important we now tread with equal caution.

Helping “Green” Your Community – The Midhurst Green Volunteers

The Midhurst Green Volunteers need your help. They clear streets and pavements of weeds and leaves and green waste to make Midhurst a tidy town. Volunteers are needed to help as part of a team of between 2 and 8 people, to tidy streets, strim and clear paths, sweep and clear leaves, and generally keep Midhurst tidy and clear of detritus. You need to be willing and able to use a broom, use a shovel, pick-up leaves, work with colleagues, swap jobs during each session and enjoy the success of finishing the task. The sessions are held every Tuesday and once on some weekends - it varies between Saturdays and Sundays, and any help for any session is welcome. It doesn’t have to be every session, it can be once a month or once a fortnight - to suit the life pattern of the individual. Each session starts at 9.30am and ends at 11am.

The Novium’s mission is to act as the official custodian of Chichester district’s heritage, to preserve and promote it, to provide as many local people and visitors as possible with an inspiring gateway for learning and discovery and to develop innovative heritage resources that will benefit communities of the present and the future. They are looking for volunteers who enjoy talking to people and have an interest in local history and/or museums to welcome visitors to The Novium Museum and respond to any of their needs. Activities will include: meeting visitors to The Novium Museum and tourist information centre, providing short 20 minute highlight tours of the museum, helping to maintain and organise the interpretative resources for the Museum and information factsheets for use in the tourist information centre and helping to keep the shop, tourist information area and museum clean and presentable. Horse Racing MIRAGE DANCER could make a welcome return to Goodwood tomorrow as one of the headline entries to the final day of the May Festival.

THe Sir Michael Stoute horse recorded the biggest win of his career so far when taking the Group 3 Bombay Sapphire Glorious Stakes over a mile and a half at the 2018 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

He was also successful in the Bet Your Way On THe Betfair Exchange Tapster Stakes 12 months ago.

THe five-year-old Frankel horse has not been since finishing last in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin, Hong Kong, in December, but could be return to action at Goodwood on Saturday.

He is entered in both the Betfair Best Odds On ITV Races Festival Stakes and the Bet Your Way On THe Betfair Exchange Tapster Stakes, both of which have ÂŁ50,000 prize money for the winner.

County success as Chi strike gold CHICHESTER Athletics Club struck gold as the squad returned from the Sussex Track and Field Championships with ten medals.

THe club’s most successful medal haul came in the Under 20s where all five Chichester competitors came away with honours.

Leo Stallard had a surprise win in the 1500m by posting a new personal best time of 4.08.92, a full second clear of his nearest rival.

Over the longer 5000m, Ned Potter pushed Brighton’s Tomer Tarragano, one of the top distance runners in the country in his age group, all the way to take silver in a new PB of 15.50.34 - 12th in the UK for his age.

Alfie Spurle was another to pick up a silver, landing 11.32m in the triple jump.

For the Under 20 women, it was Lucie Munday who struck gold in the discus with a new lifetime best of 28.25m, a distance which lifts her inside the UK top 50 for 2019.

THe fifth member of the club’s U20 squad, Florence Smith, was just outside her best set a week earlier at Walton but her 9.59m was good enough for another silver medal.

Going into these championships, two of the clubs’ Under 17s’ were the most likely to gain medals and neither of them disappointed,

winning their events in convincing fashion.

Liam Dunne summoned his finishing speed in the home straight to strike gold in the 800 metres clocking 2.00.13, a fine time in the conditions.

With barely 24 hours rest, the 16-year old returned on the Sunday to line up in the 1500m.

Anticipating another close race, Liam started at a reasonable pace and just kept on going breaking the tape in 4.04.8, an amazing 15 seconds clear of the rest of the field who were just entering the home straight. THe PB lifts him to 15th in the UK rankings.

It was in the field events where the three U17 golds were struck with Ollie Beach throwing a PB 37.68m.

For the girls, Elise Pullen came away with silver in the high jump while Brooklyn SanterSmith took bronze in the shot.

A number of the side then turned out for Chi in the latest leg of the under-17 and under-20 National League campaign at Walton against some of the strongest opposition in the south All 18 members of the squad gave a good account of themselves despite the club coming sixth out of six sides competing.

Priory stumped by poor start to season

Bognor out to keep winning BOGNOR CC will be looking to keep up the pressure at the top of the Sussex Division Two as they face an early season test at Hastings & St Leonards tomorrow (12.30pm).

It's third versus fourth tomorrow at Horntye Park as Ryan Maskell's side seek their third win on the bounce.

Sitting just seven points behind their hosts, Bognor will want to keep their winning run going so they keep up pace with St James's Montefiore and Billingshurst, both currently undefeated.

Maskell will be buoyed by the performances of his bowlers who once again were integral to his side's victory last weekend.

After being in to bat by the visiting Lindfield, Bognor looked to make good use of home conditions at the Regis Oval.

Maskell got off to a flying start, ably supported by his opening partner Taylor Jaycocks (5).

THe pair put on 40 for the first wicket as the Bognor skipper hit the Lindfield bowlers to all parts of the park.

He was eventually dismissed for

36 off 24 balls (seven fours, one six) and at 65-2 Bognor looked course for a big score.

But the middle order failed to build on starts as Mikey Harris (24), overseas players Roy Kaia (17), Joe Ashmore (15) and Josh Seward (13) all failed to push on to big scores.

Eventually, the home side were bowled out for 168 in just over 35 overs with the general feeling that the score would not be enough, even on what was proving to be a tricky surface.

But Maskell's side came out after tea with great intent and Zimbabwean Kaia led the way taking 3-20 in just nine overs.

His contribution ripped the heart out of the Lindfield batting line up as they fell to 68-7.

With an excellent contribution from Ashmore (3-18) the visitors never looked likely to reach their target.

Bognor did have a scare when Lindfield's skipper Simon Shivnarain (45) started hitting out. But Harris (3-10) wrapped up the innings to seal a 38 run victory for Bognor.

CHICHESTER Priory Park's search for a first league win of the season sees them head to fellow strugglers Ifield tomorrow (12.30pm).

THe relaying of the square at Goodwood was meant to inspire Priory and help them produce better performances on the pitch.

But after three matches the Division Two table makes for sorry reading as Chi sit second bottom in the ten team division.

Matthew Geffen's side have a chance to improve on those standings tomorrow when they head to third-bottom Ifield looking to record a win and keep contact with those sides above.

Chi will need to perform better than their last outing, which resulted in a five wicket loss to Hastings & St Leonards.

After electing to bat, Priory lost opener Simon Hastead to a duck. But Peter Lamb (25) and Daniel Wells (23) rebuilt the innings and guided Chi to 48-1.

THen the wickets started to tumble and even with good lower order contributions from Charlie Futcher (22) and Henry Condron (21) Chi struggled to a score of 160 all out from just shy of their 45 overs.

In reply, Hastings were rarely troubled as

opener Tom Gillespie (42) and number three Ryan Hoadley (42) made telling scores.

With Chi struggling to take wickets, the visitors took their time and eventually reached their score with more than ten overs to spare. James Mayne was the pick of the Priory bowlers with figures of 1-29 from seven overs.

In Division THree West it's second versus first as Pagham welcome leaders Steyning to Nyetimber Lane (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side kept up their unbeaten start to the season with a 40 run victory at Broadwater last weekend.

THe win was built off the back of a 96 run opening partnership between Hanks (24) and Jack Stannard (76) which helped propel Pagham to a score of 214-8 from their 45 overs.

In reply, Broadwater looked in control at 129-4. But Nikki Tabberer (4-44) and Rico Webb (3-22) pegged back the hosts and stopped them from getting close.

Broadwater were eventually dismissed for 174, giving Pagham a 40-run victory.

In Division Seven West, Selsey made it four wins from four after beating Bognor Seconds by seven wickets.

Rocks faithful invited to lift County Cup

ROCKS fans will get the chance to lift the Sussex Senior Cup alongside their favourite player as the club reflects on the season this weekend.

THe club's annual awards evening takes place on Sunday, from 7.30pm in Seasons Bar. Despite the club falling off the promotion pace as the season drew to an end, the lifting of the County Cup ensured that Rocks fans enter the summer with a spring in their step.

Supporters attending the event are expected to hear from manager Jack Pearce and first team coach Robbie Blake, as well as a number of players as awards are handed out.

Representatives from the club's youth set-up are also expected at the event. And club officials ensured the Rocks youngest sides had something extra special to celebrate after announcing the under-18s side will return to Nyewood Lane next season.

It means there will be matches played under the lights on Monday evenings with fans able to attend free of charge.

Pearce said: "It's very exciting for the club, we’re all delighted.

"Having the Under 18s at Nyewood Lane illustrates perfectly the progress we continue to make at all levels.

"We hope supporters can

come along and cheer on the youngsters."

THe announcement is extra special for Mike and Carol Taylor, the hard-working couple behind the transformation of the Rocks youth set-up.

THey hope the chance of watching Sussex derbies against the likes of Worthing and Whitehawk will prove popular among supporters. THe team will also enter the prestigious FA Youth Cup. Mike will manage the Under 18s with support from former Rocks favourite Gary Young, along with Paul Selby and Jack Millard.

He said: "It's fantastic news that Jack and the club's committee members have backed us.

"It's a massive enticement to tell youngsters that one day they can play at Nyewood Lane and who knows, could even do so for the first time in years to come.

"It creates a pathway for them and that is incredibly important."

THe husband and wife duo got involved with the club when their son, Ben, started playing, aged seven. THen, in 2013, they put in place a five-year plan to grow the number of teams.

Next season Rocks will field 28 competitive boys' and girls' teams across all of the age groupings, as well as a veterans' and walking football side.

Blakely new Chi Ladies boss CHICHESTER CITY have appointed former goalkeeper Sadie Blakely as their new manager after an unveiling an all-female coaching staff.

THe Oaklands Park side acted quickly to replace Aaron Smith after he guided them to their highest ever league finish in the club's history.

Blakely will have her work cut out to match this season's return which saw City finish third in the Women's National Southern Premier and lift the Sussex Challenge Cup. She will be supported by assistant Laura Galway, player-coach Kim Stenning - who is currently studying for a UEFA A licence, and head of youth Emma Alexandre.

A club statement said: "Sadie comes to the club with experience of our current league as a winner and with many years in the game at a high level. She has previously also played for our first team.

"Other coaching and behind the scenes roles are currently to be confirmed and will be here for the start of the new season.

"One thing we are very proud of is that we have chosen four women to run our first team (alongside others) and just shows the dedication and commitment to the women’s game by our club."

THe club have also confirmed that they will be looking to add an under 21s side to the set-up which will run in addition to the successful development side.

THe statement added: "We are as a committee excited about the future of the club and bringing football to girls and ladies in the local area and progressing our club behind the scenes ready for when we can make the next steps forward."

During his 12 months as manager he helped develop the squad depth while ensuring the club defied all expectations by challenging at the top end of an extremely competitive third tier of the women's game.

Highlights include beating Brighton & Hove Albion to lift the Sussex Challenge Cup and beating the then undefeated leaders,

Coventry United, away from home.

In a parting statement, Smith said: "I am thoroughly proud of the results this season and want to thank Matt [Wright] and Caz [Henry-Evans] for bringing me into the club.

"THank you of course all of the players who have taken us to the club's highest ever position in the women's pyramid and who have been like a family to me."

Interview with Jack Pearce IN the first of a series of columns over the summer months, we speak to Rocks boss Jack Pearce about his thoughts on last season and what work he's doing to rebuild the squad over the six weeks of pre-season.

How would you rate the season just gone?

I think we have to be very honest that the season has been a major disappointment as I believe the squad we assembled at the start of the season had enough depth and quality to make the playoffs.

Unfortunately, injuries took their toll this season.

We also conceded too many goals and that was down to a lack of familiarity we had in the heart of the defence.

Chad Field had five different partners in central defence so we just had no consistency.

When you have that may changes in the centre of defence it's no surprise that you then start conceding lots of goals.

As goals are the hardest thing to achieve in football that makes it twice as difficult to win games, as we found out to our cost.

What, in your mind, was the most crucial moment of the season?

We suffered a real blow at the end of February when at the start of the week we got the phone call from Portsmouth to say we could have Dan Smith for the rest of the season. THen a few days later, unfortunately, Cork City came in for him and we had to let him go.

THen we played Hornchurch and Jimmy Muitt got a nasty injury to his knee.

start to suffer.

Once Jimmy and Dan went, if I’m really honest we knew then that we would need a lot of luck.

After that we had Mason Walsh, Dan Lincoln, Joe Tomlinson and then Chad Field who all got injured so clearly things were not in our favour.

Did lifting the Sussex Senior Cup make up for not making the playoffs?

With all the disappointments this season it was especially nice for the management team to win the cup final.

It's not normal though for a side to reach the last game of season with a starting 11 who have never played together as a team.

THat’s how much the injuries affected the selection process But the atmosphere in the changing room has been excellent all season.

I'm so pleased for the players and fans we lifted the trophy.

What is your main focus for the next few weeks?

THe most important thing is to start signing players. Everyone has a level of importance at a football club but you can’t do anything without players who want to play for the club. THat starts now.

Depending on how successful we are in the market and how successful we are in retaining members of the current squad, that will decide what sort of season we're looking at.

We would like to get a squad which is ready to challenge for promotion or it may be that we assemble a side of younger players who need some time.

Rest assured, we will work hard to get the best possible players we can.

Rocks still waiting to announce first signing

Chi's promotion sealed but lease issues remain CHICHESTER City will have no less than 12 Sussex derbies to look forward to next season after their position in the Bostik South East Division was confirmed.

Miles Rutherford's side sealed promotion to step four for the first time in the club's history after winning the SCFL Premier title.

Bostik League bosses have now confirmed the league allocation for next season and Chi have been pitched in the south east division which involves sides largely from across Sussex and Kent.

Among the more tastier ties to come include matches against Burgess Hill and Brighton-based Whitehawk, both of whom have been relegated from Bostik Premier.

Chi will also lock horns again with Haywards Heath Town, who beat them to the county league title two seasons ago.

Other Sussex derbies to look forward to include matches against East Grinstead, THree Bridges and Hastings United.

Perhaps the most intriguing match for players, officials and fans though will be an away match to the Channel Islands to play Guernsey.

One of the longest trips will be to Ramsgate, with City facing a 260 mile trip to the Kent coast.

Chi will also face fellow step four newcomers Cray Valley

Paper Mill, who were defeated in the final of FA Vase last weekend.

THe club still have a wait though to find out who will own the lease to their Oaklands Park ground for the foreseeable future.

Chichester District Council is currently reviewing arrangements after the shortterm agreement with City expired.

THe council is seeking assurances the club is now operating on a financially secure footing.

THose who sit on the board believe City are well on track - with the success on the pitch proof the club is heading in the right direction.

Central to the improvement has been the formation of a management committee made up equally of members of the men’s, women's and youth sections.

A decision is expected to be taken in the coming days.

THe club has made clear that retaining the lease is vital to it's vision of creating a thriving community club for men's, women's and youth football.

Part of the tender also contains a commitment to move towards a 3G surface which would give more opportunities to its 300 junior players. THe committee also vow Oaklands is crucial to its sustainable business model.

Batting first, the hosts reached 340 for seven off their

50 overs with Sussex star Will Beer hitting a century and former Leicestershire player Michael THornely scoring 150.

But Middleton were not daunted by their target and cruised along at seven an over thanks to an unbeaten 178 run partnership between Heather (144*) and Mahesh Rawat (100*). THe Indian smashed a century from just 62 balls to guide Middleton home with 13 balls to spare.

ROCKS fans could see some temporary faces return on a more permanent basis as Bognor begin building a squad for next season.

After a disappointing league campaign which saw the club finish 14th in the Bostik Premier, manager Jack Pearce is busy assembling a side for next year.

Negotiations with a number of key players from last year's squad remain ongoing.

But Pearce is likely to want to talk to Joe Tomlinson and Dan Smith, both of whom starred for Bognor last year on loan but have since been released from Brighton & Hove Albion and Portsmouth respectively.

One player who is unlikely to return to the Nye Camp next season though is Mason Walsh, who is looking to land a professional contract in the United States.

Pearce and first team coach Robbie Blake will hope to make a number of new additions to the squad.

One potential avenue is a trials day which is planned for next month.

THe club say it has been inundated with eager players keen to impress at the session being held at the East Dean FC pre-season training HQ. After a selection process around

Pearce said: "We've been pleasantly surprised by the standard of some of the applicants and we remain hopeful that this pool of untapped talent can throw up one or two gems who we can integrate into the squad.

"You never know in football and so we will see how they perform on the day and subsequently if we like the look of them."

Rocks fans will have a number of new trips on the cards next season after non-league allocations were announced.

East THurrock United have joined the Bostik Premier after being relegated from National South.

Promoted sides include Essexbased Bowers & Pitsea, who won the Isthmian North, and Cray Wanderers, who were champions of the Isthmian South East.

Hertfordshire side Cheshunt join after winning the South Central playoffs while Horsham will provide Rocks with a Sussex derby after the relegation of Whitehawk and Burgess Hill. THe season starts on August 10.

Rocks will start the season on minus one point after an administration error last year.
