Nursery workers plan anger Plenty of

THe scheme would see the staff based at Newlands Nursery, in Pagham Road, for ten months of the year.

THey would be housed in 31 units.

THeir numbers would vary between 93 and 186 through the season from February to November.

But Pagham Parish Council has joined

nearby residents in objecting to the proposal by the nursery's owner, Cre8.

Councillors decided at their planning committee on Tuesday to tell Arun District Council they believed the proposal fell outside the range of permitted development allowed at the nursery without planning approval and the prospect of the scheme being unneighbourly.

said Arun's planning department was investigating how much of the scheme counted as permitted development.

"THey are looking into the implications of the legal side of this. THere is a little bit of a leeway with 17 per cent of workers that can be moved somewhere else,” she said.

Cllr David Huntley said the planning application was misleading.

Anton's new test is a grave matter A FURTHER safety test has been carried out by Bognor Regis cemeteries' campaigner Anton Matthews.

Mr Matthews arranged for the trial to be held to prove the British Standard which he helped to compile was flawed.

THe standard specifies that headstones for graves should be tested in 6mm coarse sand to ensure it can withstand a pull force of 150kg.

But the finished version published last year should have stated the soil size was 0.6mm.

"THe size which was published is ten times the size which we agreed," said Mr Matthews.

"I had to hold the test to prove it would not work and put it back to the British Standards Institute and make them aware of the mistake.

"We now have confirmation that the base is non-compliant.

"THe change has got to be made.

THere's no doubt about that. It's an error or some sort of mistake.

"THe chairman of the drafting panel has agreed with me along with two other members - and there were only five members on the panel."

Last week's test took place at the memorial stone centre in Rowan Way owned by Mr Matthews.

He arranged for testing experts to install a headstone in a 1m X 1m pit filled with coarse sand to find out the maximum pressure it was able to handle.

It toppled over after being subjected to 80-85kg of force - well below the 150kg it

was supposed to be able to bear.

"I didn't expect the headstone to stand up," Mr Matthews said. "When we last did the test here in 2014, that ground has settled naturally since then as it would have if it had been used for a grave. It's had rain, snow, frost, everything on it."

A detailed report about the testing is being prepared by the contractors used

by Mr Matthews.

He has spent 15 years campaigning for safer headstones to ensure they can endure vandalism or shifting soil conditions.

He was prompted to act after a series of tragic accidents in churchyards caused by unsafe headstones.

He devised a new method of fixing them with a bolted mechanical system of two 20mm stainless steel studs and two core plugs with stainless steel bars.

THis contrasts with the traditional system of using a pin in the ground each side of the headstone.

THe method created by Mr Matthews, called Stone-Safe, was one of four included in the British Standard, BS8415, when it was published last summer.

His continued fight has seen him clash with the national body for stone masons.

But it has won him two safety awards and a place on the relevant BS committee.

He has also seen changes in details required by councils from masons to make sure their headstones are safe.

THis includes the need for insurance and a risk assessment but he said more needed to be done.

Town's MP declares support for Michael Gove as next PM MP Nick Gibb has backed Michael Gove to be the next Prime Minister.

Mr Gibb, the Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, took to social media to show his support for the environment secretary.

THe pair worked together in Mr Gibb's first spell as an education minister when Mr Gove was in charge of the country's schools. Mr Gibb said: "I'm backing Michael Gove to be the next leader of the Conservative Party.

"His intellect, drive, track record of achievement in government and vision for the future makes him best placed to deliver Brexit, unite the

party and heal our divided country."

Previously, Mr Gibb had expressed his sympathy for THeresa May after she resigned last Friday.

"As Prime Minister, THeresa May never, not once, put her own interests before those of the country," he said.

"Her steadfast sense of duty drove her decision making. Responsibility for failing to deliver Brexit lies with others, not with her."

He had earlier backed Mrs May's final, failed attempt to get her Brexit deal approved by MPs. He stated: "We must deliver Brexit and this is the only way to do it."

f Phil Clinker with a copy of his new book FIRST-TIME Aldwick author Phil Clinker is celebrating the publication of his debut novel.

Phil's story combines murder and mayhem in a fictional town which mixes British and American culture.

THe result is Bakerton, which Cambridge-based firm Pegasus, published yesterday.

Phil said: "It's absolutely fantastic to have my first book published. I'm 68, so it's come late in life but it's really exciting.

"I hope to write a trilogy and I'm already halfway through my second novel."

Bakerton is a quiet sleepy town which may or may not be in America. Its residents are woken from their slumber when a wealthy banker and several of his associates are brutally murdered.

THe town's unconventional sheriff, John Withers, is called into action. He soon discovers there are two killers - one of whom has apparently been dead for four years. Both of them have different motives and they are set on a final showdown. Withers and his deputies are in the line of fire.

THe incendary mix is inflamed further when a young woman also goes missing.

Phil spent nearly 50 years in the printing trade. Just over half of them were spent running his own business.

He lived for half his life in Kent before he retired and moved to Nyetimber Lane with his wife, Olive.

"When I retired, I decided to take up painting," he said. "I have been doing that for three years.

"Last year, I suddenly got the urge to start writing. I've always written but never anything serious.

"But this idea for a story kept running round my head and I couldn't get rid of it.

"It took me eight or nine months to write Bakerton and another five months for a publisher to accept it."

His second book will be called THurlow Junction and will also feature the enigmatic Sheriff Withers.

Phil was also shortlisted for the Bognor Regis Write Club short story competition this year. His work will appear in the club's forthcoming anthology which will be published in mid-July.

A NEWLY-FORMED group of councillors from around Bognor Regis has pledged to be a force for good on Arun District Council.

THe collection of Independent members holds the balance of power in the politically split council.

Seven of the eight Independents elected at the ballot boxes earlier this month have formed the group.

THeir leader, Cllr Tony Dixon, said outside their first council meeting they would be backing the majority Liberal Democrat party.

"It is our intention to work in a spirit of co-operation with the Liberal Democrats whilst retaining our independence," he said.

"We will work with the Lib Dems to identify common ground and then to develop and implement appropriate policies. Where there are differences, we will talk.

"THe electorate have placed their trust in us and we intend to repay that trust by ensuring orderly governance, whilst at the same time pursuing change in a number of areas."

It was the group's aim to seek to be a positive influence on the council, said Cllr Dixon.

"We do not want the council to descend into chaos," he said. "THese are exciting times. We can feel the change in the council already.

"THere's an excitement about the place. Some of the problems are in the past.

"It's now about looking forward

to the future."

THe number of Independent members on Arun is the highest in 30 years and possibly the most since it was formed in 1974.

As well as Cllr Dixon (Aldwick E), they are Cllr James Brooks (Marine), Cllr Hugh Coster (Aldwick E), Cllr Mrs Sandra Daniells (Pevensey), who was absent when the photograph was taken, Cllr Steve Goodheart (Hotham), Cllr June Hamilton (Pagham), Cllr Shirley Haywood (Middleton) and Cllr David Huntley (Pagham).

"It is quite clear that the electorate voted for change and we are looking forward to playing an important part in the changes that will come over the next four years.

"We will work hard to achieve concensus within our group, but we recognise that there will be times when that is not possible," said Cllr Dixon.

"THere will be no whip and each member of the Indendent group will be free to vote as their conscience dictates at all times."

THe Independents' deputy leader is Cllr Coster.

As reported, the election resulted in the Conservatives losing their majority at the council for the first time since it was formed.

THe Lib Dems have 22 seats against the Tories' 21. As well as the eight Independents, there are two Green councillors and one Labour member.

Man is guilty of indecent behaviour to three women A BARNHAM man has been sentenced to a community order for indecent behaviour towards women at an Aldingbourne stables.

Ian Bazley, 63, a sales representative, of Dial Close, was sentenced at Worthing Magistrates' Court on May 15. He had been convicted at a previous hearing of three counts of indecent exposure, and one count of common assault, all during 2017 and 2018 at Park Farm Stables in Aldingbourne.

He had pleaded guilty to the first three offences and was found guilty of the fourth.

Bazley will have to undertake 280 hours of community work and will also be a registered sex offender for five years. He was ordered to pay court costs, and compensation of £500 to be equally divided between the three victims.

PC Robynn Gordon, of Sussex Police's Chichester investigations unit, said: "THis outcome is a victory for Bazley's victims who have been very brave in coming forward and supporting our investigation into this completely

unacceptable behaviour towards them.

"He preyed on females and other vulnerable members of the public over a prolonged period of time, in an environment that should have been a peaceful haven for them, causing great distress."

THe court was told that Bazley, who kept horses at the stables, indecently exposed himself and behaved indecently over a period of time, in the yard and adjacent fields, in the presence of three women who also kept horses there.

On one occasion, he also grabbed at one of the women round the waist while he spoke to her unpleasantly, which led to the common assault charge. She was shocked and upset but uninjured.

Some of the witnesses were initially unsure of what they had seen or whether there was any intent to offend, according to the police.

But it eventually became clear that Bazley was deliberately intending to offend and upset them. He had no concern as to whether he was seen.

Voters back Brexit Party in Euro elections around town NEW Brexit Party MEP Robert Rowland has thanked Bognor Regis voters for backing him.

Mr Rowland was one of four of his party's candidates elected to the European parliament in Brussels after they swept to victory.

Almost half of the electors in the Arun district backed THe Brexit Party in a major show of support for a political group unknown much before Easter.

Mr Rowland said: "We are absolutely delighted with the level of support we have received from voters in Bognor Regis, resulting in a historic night for THe Brexit Party.

"To have four candidates elected with over 900,000 votes in the south east is fantastic, especially considering the party has been operating for less than two months. Voters have had enough of the Westminster elite trying to delay, disappoint and derail Brexit.

"We want to put trust back at the heart of our democracy.

"We will stand up for hard-working ordinary Brits and will do everything we can to make sure that the UK is prepared to leave with a clean-break Brexit by the latest deadline of October 31."

Last THursday's polling took place almost three years after Arun's residents voted by some two-thirds to one-third to leave the EU. It was also the second set of elections in just three weeks after the council elections on May 2 which saw the previously dependent Conservatives left as the council's second largest party

for the first time in its 45-year history.

THe result of the Euro election saw THe Brexit Party gain 21,827 of the total 45,114 votes. THis was more than the next four parties combined - Liberal Democrats 8,713, Green Party 4,736, Conservative Party 4,357 and Labour Party 2,035.

Further down the results came Change UK (1,441 votes), UKIP (1,387), UK European Union Party (136), Jason McMahon (76), THe Socialist Party of Great Britain (54), David Round (50) and Michael Turbeville (29). THe turnout was 37.5 per cent.

THe dominant showing helped to give THe Brexit Party four MEPs in the southeast. THe Lib Dems have three MEPs, with one each for the Greens, Labour and Conservatives.

Across the UK, the final tally of MEPs was 29 for THe Brexit Party, 16 Lib Dems, 10 Labour, seven Greens, and four Conservatives with smaller numbers for the likes of the SNP and DUP. A statement by the People's Vote campaign said the 40 per cent overall backing of the five pro-People's Vote parties outweighed the 35 per cent for the two in favour of no deal.

Commenting, Peter Kellner, the former president of YouGov, said: “THese elections were not a victory for the Brexit cause, nor were they a mandate for Nigel Farage’s campaign for a No Deal Brexit.

"It is significant that in every region the firmly pro-People's Vote parties gained ground, and in most regions advanced by large amounts.”

He pointed out the nursery would need a lot of staff at certain times of the year. “People are still needed to put plants and trays in packets. It could go up to 200-300 at least when they are sending out," he said.

THe parish council originally raised no objection because it was unaware of residents' anger.

Nearby resident Abi Hudlass Galley told the committee: “THey are not going to have 186 workers on site.

THis is to do with a lot of other sites.

“THey are going to be bussing them in and out. It’s ridiculous to say these 186 workers are going to be there ten months of a year.”

Her husband, Chris Galley, said: “THis is a proposed campsite for the workers. It was unanimous from everyone we spoke to. THey didn’t want this.

“We are 10-12 strong against 186 workers living there right on our doorstep, within 50 yards of the nearest residents. THere will be 186 people stuck out in the middle of nowhere with nothing for them to do.”

One of their neighbours, Ray Warland, has told Arun: "Access to Pagham Road is not suitable for pedestrians as there are no footpaths or pavements and the road is already congested and subject to collision."

Other neighbours Frank and Loran Goemans also told Arun: "Newlands Nursery surely does not need accommodation for 93 seasonal workers, let alone 186 proposed for this site."

Cre8's planning agent, Douglas Briggs, said approval was only needed to keep the accommodation on site all year. Housing the workers for ten months did not require permission.

Tribute to town author ONE of the most loyal former members of Bognor Boys' Club has passed away.

Best-selling author Max Arthur died of leukaemia earlier this month. He was aged 80. He had attended every one of the reunions of the club's members to relive his youth growing up in Bognor Regis.

He came to public prominence with his second book, Forgotten Voices of the Great War (2002), and followed that two years later with Forgotten Voices of the Second World War (2004).

Fellow boys' club member and reunion organiser Frank Enticknapp said: "I had known Max since 1952.

He was a quiet but keen Bognor Boys' Club boy. THat's how I would sum him up.

"He attended, without exception, every one of the reunions we have held and there have been about 12 of them. He would certainly have been at the reunion we will be holding in July.

"He was a very keen footballer and he was the boys' club captain in 1957."

Mr Arthur was born in Bognor Regis in 1939 and attended the secondary school in Westloats Lane.

He left as soon as he could and worked on a building site. He was in the last quota of men called up for National Service and joined the RAF. While in its ranks, he gained five O-levels and briefly became a teacher and went to medical school. By the 1970s, he was a self-employed painter-decorator in London. He next became an actor and had minor roles on television, including Doctor Who and Grange Hill.

A resident of North London, he returned to his great love of football and it was on the 20th anniversary in 1978 of the Munich air disaster which involved Manchester United players and staff that he had the idea of recording the voices of the survivors.

He self-published the resulting book in 1983 and, recounting the idea to a member of the Special Boat Service, was encouraged to repeat it with servicemen's stories in their own words.

Mr Enticknapp said: "Forgotten Voices of the Great War was on THe Sunday Times' bestseller list for both hardback and softback."

He was awarded the OBE in 2013 for services to military history.

Charity's sofa visit success VISITORS to Butlin's in Bognor Regis were greeted by the sight of a pink sofa.

THe brightly-coloured piece of furniture was taken to the holiday site as the finale of a tour by Dementia Support.

THe charity has used the settee to offer people support and advice about dementia.

Butlin's was the destination for one of its charity weekends, which saw the entry fees donated to the good cause based at Sage House in Tangmere.

THese totalled more than £8,000 after 5,000-plus people took the chance to look around the popular holiday resort.

Many of them enjoyed the new £40m swimming complex which opened earlier this month, as reported.

Jeremy Pardey, Butlin's resort director, said: "As a brand, Butlin's strives to support many local charities and initiatives throughout the year.

"We host charity weekends on resort every few months in which we raise as much money as we can to support local causes.

"Over the years, we've managed to raise thousands of pounds for a number of charities and we're really excited to announce a new partnership for 2019 with Dementia Support.

"It's great that, in just one weekend, we've managed to raise over £8,000 on resort for a good cause which looks after the wellbeing and quality of life of local people living with dementia."

Many of the guests also used the vivid sofa to stop and talk to the Dementia Support team to ask for support

and information about the disease.

Many had relatives or knew someone living with dementia.

Dementia Support's chief executive, Sally Tabbner, said: "It was great for our charity to be able to get out and meet visitors to Butlin's that weekend and to help raise awareness of dementia, a disease that can affect anyone.

"We work hard at Sage House to ensure that people are supported to live with dementia, which is why we have just launched our Wayfinder Appeal to fund more personal advisors and lifechanging dementia support services to help families face the future with hope and confidence.

"As a charity we rely totally on voluntary donations, with no current funding from the NHS or government to provide this essential dementia support and are, therefore, very proud of our new partnership with Butlin's.

"We cannot thank them enough for their generosity in supporting us and raising much-needed funds."

During the week, Dementia Support was on tour around West Sussex with its sofa to offer advice and support to the various communities.

THe charity's Wayfinding service is unique. It comprises a team that provides personalised care and support for people living with dementia and their families.

Dementia Support has launched a £1m appeal to enable it to reach more people who have dementia and help them and their families.

Festival to help pupils decide their future after education YOUNG people who are looking for education, jobs or training should head to a leisure venue in Bognor Regis.

THe charity, asphaleia, is hosting a destinations festival next week at THe Base Skatepark. THe event is taking place from 4pm-6pm on THursday and is aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds.

A spokeswoman for asphaelia said: "Do you know any NEET (not in education, employment or training)young people?

"Do you know young people who are about to leave year 11 or sixth form who aren't sure what to do next? Come

along to our Destinations Festival.

"THere will be workshops, refreshments and local organisations to talk to and a chance to win prizes."

Spaces are still available for schools, colleges and organisations to take young people along.

Businesses and other organisations also have the chance to have stands on the day.

THREE national retailers are to be given smarter shopfronts in Bognor Regis.

Planning permission for the improvements at the Arun Retail Park has been given by Arun District Council.

THe backing will see the premises of B&Q, Pets at Homes and Carpetright benefit from refurbished front elevations.

Council planning officer Amber Willard says in her report: "Much of the proposal replaces and upgrades materials and signage and, therefore, is considered to enhance the overall appearance of the retail unit.

"To unit C1 and C2 (Carpetright and Pets at Home), there will be a new shopfront involving the installing of glazing.

"THis will enhance the appearance of the shopfront and will be in keeping with units at D1 and D2 (M&S Foodhall and Next) which already displays this facade.

"THis will ensure the design is in keeping with the surrounding units which currently have a modern film appearance.

Covers timber and builders' merchants will use the occasion to showcase its new purpose-built AEG kitchen demo area.

Visitors to the company's branch at Station Yard will have the chance from 10am-4pm on Tuesday to sample a selection of savoury and sweet dishes served up by AEG food economist, Carol Potter.

Heather Perrott, the Bognor Regis association's chairman, said: "THis year's competition was well fought in a good atmosphere with some really close games.

"But the eventual trophy winners were Rustington, who won all four of their matches, and beat Bognor into second place by seven points.

Recognition for leaders TWO young men from Bognor Regis have been awarded certificates for taking part in a leadership experience.

Malachi Grant and Lars Evison were chosen by Bognor Hotham Rotary Club to be sponsored for this year's Rotary youth leadership award scheme.

THey spent almost a week at the scheme's camp near Box Hill in Surrey and followed this by attending one of the club's meetings this month to tell its members about their experiences there.

Club press officer Brian Clarke said: "Lars and Malachi offered a very detailed and well-orchestrated presentation.

"Everyone appreciated the new facility and it is hoped to have many more twinning boules events here."

As reported, the piste in the park was completed last summer. THe area around it, next to the golf course, has since been fenced and equipped with picnic tables to make a delightful and safe picnic and boules area."

THe boules tournament has previously been held at the piste in East Preston.

THe Bognor Regis piste is free for all members of the public to use.

Sets of boules can be borrowed free of charge, for a deposit, from the adventure golf hut.

Full rules of the game are displayed by the playing area for anyone who needs to brush up their knowledge.

"Clearly, they had an enjoyable and rewarding time which should help prepare them for their chosen careers."

THe programme is designed by Rotary to help young people face a challenging world by encouraging leadership, communication and teamwork skills while having fun and building lifelong relationships. THe club is to begin to consider possible candidates for next year's leadership award.

Arresting sights as town parkrun celebrates five years of success BURGLAR Nick Solti was among those who went on the run in Bognor Regis for fun.

Nick dressed up in the traditional black and white outfit to mark the fifth birthday of parkrun in Bognor Regis.

THe 52-year-old accident investigator, who lives in the town centre, said: "Taking part in parkrun kick-starts the weekend.

"It's a good way to keep fit and there is a real sense of community here.

"I must know about 50 people I didn't know before I started coming here about 18 months ago.

"I've persuaded lots of people to take part and they enjoy it."

Nick was among the dozens of parkrunners who joined in the cops'n'robbers theme of last Saturday's 5k event.

Bags of swag could be seen as well as police officers' uniforms and truncheons as the 355 runners completed their one short circuit and three complete circuits of Hotham Park. Some ran, some jogged and others walked.

Weybridge nanny Lindsey Knight, 32, also wore burglar's clothing as she took part in her sixth parkrun while she stayed with her parents in the area.

"I enjoy taking part in parkruns to run with other people and improve my time.

"THis is a nice parkrun. I do go running on my own but being with other people makes you go faster," she said.

Run director Ben Bowers was among those who founded the free event in 2014.

At the 251 parkruns since then, more than 7,000 individuals have crossed its

start line at 9am next to the park's boating lake. THey have completed 266,000-plus kilometres - equal to six-and-a-half circuits of the globe.

He said: "When we started Bognor Regis parkrun, we never thought it would be this successful.

"We have welcomed runners from all over the globe from as far afield as New Zealand, Canada and Australia.

"Some of our parkrunners have gone on to complete marathons and ultramarathons. People have also made lasting friendships here.

"I'm surprised Bognor Regis parkrun is still as big as it is. Soon after we started, Chichester parkrun began and, recently, Littlehampton parkrun has started. But our numbers have hardly dropped at all to show the popularity of running.

"Taking part in parkrun is a great leveller.

We have all ages and you could be a shelf stacker in Sainsbury's rubbing shoulders with a top solicitor or architect.

"No-one cares about your background.

It's all about the running."

Each parkrun takes 20 volunteers to stage. It is the duty of the six race directors - the others are Anita Watkins, Keith Hardwell, Duncan Stephenson-Gill, Matthew Copeland and Stan Mack - to ensure enough helpers are available for the weeks they are on duty.

"It does take an effort and no-one here is paid," said Ben. "We all do it for the love of running and the community spirit.

"Even when I'm not the director, I still come along with my kids to show them what volunteering is all about."

THe 355 runners at the anniversary parkrun included a handful of first-timers as well as some 40 visiting from towns such as Nottingham and Weymouth.

THey were led home by Jack Penfold in 18mins 40secs after his personal best of 38:17 in the Bognor Prom 10k six days earlier.

It was the first time the 22-year-old from Pagham had finished first in some 40 parkruns. He said: "I like all the chat at the start and the fact we push each other.

"THe guy who was in second is a member of the running club I belong to and I could feel him on my shoulder all the way around the last lap. THat pushed me to go faster when I didn't think that I could.

"Being out running with other people also really helps your mental health.

"I joined Tone Zone Runners as soon as I was able to at 16, because my dad's a member, and I enjoy running along the South Downs with them on a Sunday and seeing the different views."

Jack just beat Christo Oosthuizen in 18:46 and James Mapley in 18:56. THe first woman home was Alice Cox-Rusbridge.

She crossed the line in 20:00.

Second was April Martin (22:25) and third Alexsandra Vargin (22:54). *THe memories of three parkrunners involved from the early days were applauded before the anniversary run.

Love of books beats rain

RAIN failed to stop book characters coming to life at a popular Bognor Regis event.

Some ten children took part in the fancy dress parade at the annual book day staged by Bognor Regis Town Council.

THeir prize was an exclusive ride round Hotham Park with Cinderella in her glass carriage in her visit to the town after her Christmas parade was washed out.

THe wet conditions failed to dampen the love of books for Littlehampton resident Poppy.

She said: "I like books because of the characters that are in them. My favourite authors are David Walliams and Julia Donaldson. I read a little bit every day."

Also getting into the literary spirit of the occasion was Coco Smith, seven, of Yapton, as Cinderella.

"I enjoy the books and the settings that they have. I read a lot of books and they all have the same story of a forest theme and, sometimes, a little house.

"Reading calms me and I read every day," she said.

She left the book swap tent with one of the Horrible Histories stories.

Her younger brother, Ozzy Smith, five, said: "I like stories being read to me. My favourite is THe Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Walliams because it's funny."

THeir mother, Georgina Smith, 37, said: "THis is a good event and we came to a previous one with a Roald Dahl theme.

"It encourages children to read and it also keeps them busy during half-time."

THe occasionally heavy rain which blighted Wednesday afternoon kept the

attendance below 1,000 people compared to the 6,000-8,000 at the five previous days.

Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick said it started to rain about 30 minutes after the event begin at midday.

"A lot of people tried to stay, and you could see them sheltering under the trees, but they gave up when the rain became more persistent.

"We started this event because there was nothing else on in the May half-term and we wanted every child who came along to leave with a book to have read to them.

"Hopefully, we will be back again next year, without the rain, but that is up to the councillors," she said.

Town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall entered into the spirit of the occasion by combining his chain of office with a grown up Harry Potter costume.

He said: "It's unfortunate about the weather but we just to have carry on anyway because that's what Brits do.

"It's a good day and it's all about encouraging children to read, which is a good thing to do."

THe range of free events included six storytelling sessions at the bandstand. As well as books, those children who went along had the chance to handle reptiles, tackle a 7.5m-high climbing wall and take part in crafts workshops.

Among them was Cordelia Denley, four, and her mother, Jessica Denley, of North Bersted. Cordelia made a dragon complete with a cheek, a pair of glasses and a nose.

She also enjoyed two storytelling sessions, though THe Firebird scared her.

Her mum said: "It's been nice to try different things and it's amazing all the things that have been free.

"We really enjoy coming to the park as well. We are lucky to have it."

Uni helps homeless with degrees

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PROJECT at the University of Chichester is transforming the lives of homeless people by empowering them with the confidence and skills to apply for degree courses.

The pioneering initiative, which is the first of its kind in the UK, helps students without necessary qualifications to learn new skills and bridge the gap to higher education.

There are now more than 320,000 homeless people in Britain, according to Shelter, with those living on the streets twice as likely to develop mental health conditions.

Among the university cohort is Lucy D who started living sleeping rough at just 12 years of age before falling into addiction.

Now, at the age of 30, she is about to start a fine art degree.

Speaking about the university project she said: “It gives us the confidence to start a degree. We cover subjects from critical thinking, different learning styles, referencing and essay writing, to gain the tools to move forward to university.”

Lucy is one of ten students, all homeless and mostly recovering from addiction, who have applied to university after enrolling on the tenweek course at Chichester, led by its institute of education, health, and social sciences.

The course has been created in collaboration with West Sussex homeless charities Stonepillow and the Bognor Housing Trust to develop and assess academic skills to ensure students are ready for the first year of study.

The module, which has been backed by the Office for Students, utilises the students’ lived experiences to develop academic reading, writing and research

skills, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-belief.

Honest and insightful links are made between themes like emotional intelligence, reflective practice, decision-making skills, critical thinking – and past, often painful, experiences.

Senior lecturer Becky Edwards, from the University of Chichester’s department of childhood, social work, and social care, developed the project to help reduce barriers to higher education.

"Being intelligent and being educated are not synonymous,” she said. Some of the most intelligent people in the UK are living in poverty, both economically and aspirationally.

“They’ve not been privileged enough, lucky enough, or supported enough to access good education. Going to university is simply something they’d never have considered - this gives us the chance to change that.”

Latest figures by charity Crisis show homelessness has increased by 60 per cent since 2012, creating a modern-day diaspora with no clear pathway back into society.

For this vulnerable group, with complex needs ever exacerbated by barriers to basic services like housing, health, employment, and benefits, attending university is low on the list of aspirations and fraught with extra challenges.

Student Mike T lived on the streets of Bognor Regis for more three months after losing a job he had for ten years.

The 31-year-old, who is now a resident at Stonepillow, will start a full-time degree in English and creative writing in 2020.

He said: “This is not just an opportunity for us to go to university, but to change the way that people view us, and make sure we are not defined by our past experiences. We all have a willingness to learn, and to learn what we can, so that

Chance to question police commissioner RESIDENTS are being given the chance to question the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner at a meeting next month.

Sussex Police’s policy on dog units, speeding and illegal hunting are just some of the issues Katy Bourne has answered in the past.

Written questions should be submitted by noon on Friday, June 14.

The commissioner will then respond during the next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel on Friday, June 28.

Councillor Bill Bentley, chairman of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, said: “We welcome as many questions as possible from members of the public.

“The role of the panel is to scrutinise

the work of the Commissioner and we want to make sure the issues we raise are relevant to Sussex residents.”

Questions can be about any policy issue relating to policing in Sussex, but not operational matters or live cases.

The main items on the agenda include the Police and Crime Commissioner’s annual report, harassment and stalking and the Early Intervention Youth Fund.

Concerns for kids over timescales SOME 500 children with special needs in West Sussex are waiting too long to receive the help they need at school.

There are around 5,000 children in the county with education, health and care plans (EHCP), which detail their needs and what should be done to meet them.

While the vast majority are dealt with within the required time limits, ten per cent are not, affecting 500 youngsters with conditions such as autism.

The matter was discussed at a County Hall meeting, in Chichester, where Paul Wagstaff, director of education and skills, explained what was happening.

Mr Wagstaff said the council had 16 weeks to complete EHCP reviews and 20 weeks for new assessments and that the 90 per cent completion was in line with the national rate.

Adding that the West Sussex figures had been improving for two years, he said: “Sometimes it is quite difficult to get all children through in that period of time because sometimes the cases are quite complex, additional information’s required and it’s not necessarily available immediately.

“Sometimes the liaison and discussion with parents takes longer than anticipated if the parents don’t want the provision identified in the EHCP. “So what we’re needing to do is actually try and work with those more complex cases to reduce those times.”

The committee had been discussing the council’s recent ‘inadequate’ children’s services report from Ofsted.

Chairman Michael Cloake said: “You’ve got 500 cases of children that are not getting the services they require in their schools in that timescale.

“What do we need to do as a council and as a committee to meet those 500 children within timescales that have been set nationally.

“I appreciate there are concerns and difficulties and challenges getting information but Ofsted don’t care, the child doesn’t care.

“How do we as a council meet those targets?”

Mr Wagstaff said the work was already being done and that his team hoped to hit the 95 per cent plus mark this year.

He pointed out that some things were beyond the authority’s control, such as when a parent wanted to explore all options for their child before making a decision about a school.

While determined not to cut corners to reach the targets, Mr Wagstaff added: “What we are doing is actively engaging on the ground with those parents to make sure that actually we can try and accelerate that process of decision making.

“Once those decisions are made, the process of completing is fairly swift.”

` Bogus calls

POLICE are reminding Sussex residents, especially the elderly, to stay on the alert for bogus phone calls and visitors after 35 cases of 'courier fraud' or attempts so far in May including six on one day.

But thanks to alert residents and bank staff, only six attempts succeeded.

In several of the cases residents have received phone calls from someone purporting to be a 'Detective Chief Inspector Richard Harrison'. There is no such officer.

The caller alleges that there has been unauthorised use of a debit or credit card, that someone has been arrested, and that there is an investigation ongoing.

The caller says that the resident must either supply their PIN and other card details over the phone, and hand the card or cards to a courier who would arrive at the door.

However thanks to the alertness of residents, and in six cases thanks to the alertness of bank staff , only six of the 35 attempts were successful, with a total loss of £24,800 - the biggest single loss was £7,900. The oldest victim was 96 years old.

Around 18 of these were in West Sussex and the bank staff interventions saved losses totalling £63,500. Local officers have responded to every report and have been providing support, including advice and assistance on prevention measures.

Trust's events WAYS in which volunteers help the Aldingbourne Trust will be outlined at two events next week.

The trust is hosting a pair of drop-in sessions on Monday to enable people to find out more about the trust's work with people with learning disabilities and how they can support it.

The first of the events will take place from 10am-midday at the Aldingbourne Country Centre. This will be followed at 2pm-4pm at the trust's shop at 73 Aldwick Road in Bognor Regis.

A trust spokesman said: "We are very fortunate to have over 201 volunteers throughout all our enterprises within the trust.

"Every single volunteer makes a difference to the people we support from volunteers in our charity shop, being part of our adopt a statin project

and the country centre.

"Volunteering for the trust is a truly rewarding experience as well as a fantastic way to learn new skills, meet new people and get involved in your local community.

"We have a variety of volunteering opportunities across all of our project, so we are sure to have something to suit everyone."

The trust also has regular support from corporate volunteers from organisations such as Southern Water, Mercer and The Kitchen Store.

"They have helped us by clearing our greenhouses, painting and decorating our new children's tractor play area and general maintenance tasks around the country centre, which has helped us save over 1,352 hours a week," added the spokesman.

f Single-use plastic use will be audited by the county council

Plastic waste A PLAN to eliminate single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic waste has been launched by West Sussex County Council.

The council will carry out a full audit of all the plastic it uses across its buildings and set targets for reduction as part of a Plastics Action Plan published on Tuesday, May 28.

The council has made a commitment to find alternatives to plastic wherever possible and to use recycled plastic when it isn’t. The council will also ensure that where possible, plastic items they do use can be reused or recycled.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment, said: “The environmental impact of single-use plastics is undeniable and thanks to programmes such as Blue Planet we have seen a growing movement to reduce our reliance on plastics and seek alternatives.

“We are recycling more than ever – with 7,000 tonnes of plastic sent to be recycled in West Sussex last year. However, many single-use plastic items can’t be recycled or are simply thrown away.

“We want to lead by example and ensure we are working towards eliminating single-use and unnecessary plastics wherever possible for our staff, residents, and businesses.”

The publication of the Plastics Action Plan comes as the county council is about to launch a major new campaign to encourage people to pledge their support to reduce the impact of climate change. The West Sussex Climate Pledge will launch on World Environment Day on June 5.

Part of the West Sussex Climate Pledge campaign will involve encouraging people to #PassOnPlastic.

The county council is already supporting the national Refill campaign to encourage people to use a reusable bottle and fill up with tap water. There are four publically accessible Refill points in county council buildings.

The county council has also taken steps to improve recycling for staff, and has replaced plastic cutlery and takeaway containers in its main canteen with items made from wood, metal, paper or card.

Helping roles to be highlighted A FIRST volunteering showcase of its kind is to be held in the grounds of Chichester Cathedral.

Voluntary Arun & Chichester (VAAC) is holding its volunteer fair in the open air at the landmark setting for the first time.

The event will take place from 11am3pm next Friday and will be attended by 30 voluntary and community groups from the area.

Jenny Holmes, the senior admin and communications worker at VAAC, said: "VAAC and Chichester Cathedral are excited to invite everyone to this unique celebration and showcase of local volunteering in the beautiful setting of the cathedral grounds.

"This is a great opportunity for anyone that is actively looking for a role, or anyone who would like to explore the possibility of volunteering at one of the amazing community groups and organisations that are active in our local area.

The volunteer fair was last held by VAAC in a Selsey venue two years ago It is being revived to celebrate national volunteers' week.

It will also enable those who are thinking of volunteering to find a role which is perfect for them.

Staging the occasion is part of VAAC's role in promoting and supporting voluntary and community groups and providing a voice for the sector across the district.

The week, running from June 10 – 16, focuses on ‘Getting Carers Connected’ and encourages local communities to support family and friend carers.

Over 40 events are taking place across West Sussex for people who are caring for a member of their family or a friend, which includes information stands to provide help and guidance at St Richards Hospital, Spitalfield Lane, Chichester PO19 6SE One service that is benefiting carers

across the county is the Carers Health Team. The team aim to ensure that hard pressed carers feel less isolated and are able to manage their own health and emotional wellbeing.

“It is vital that family and friend carers remember that they too are entitled to look after their own health and wellbeing and that their health matters”, said Wilma Thomas, Carers Health Team service lead.

“Our carer health clinicians can work in partnership with carers to provide personalised one to one advice and information and our team are able to visit carers at home and check their general state of health and wellbeing.

Amanda Jupp, county council cabinet member for adults and health, said: “Carers make a vital contribution to our communities and I would really encourage anyone who may find

themselves supporting others to make sure they are in touch with our local services to get the best possible information and advice. "It’s also important that people look after their own health needs as well as those of their loved ones. It is often too easy for people to ignore their own health as they focus more and more on those they care for."

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK

From Women At War to a Rocketman May 31 - June 6

It's going to be a long, long time before a rock biopic manages to capture the highs and lows of an artist's life like Rocketman. Rock biopics, such as the recent Bohemian Rhapsody, are inter-generational manna from music heaven and Rocketman—the story of shy Reginald Dwight from North London, who would become showman and songman extraordinaire Elton John—is another fine exemplar of the genre.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton as the spangled one himself, Rocketman is magnificent and ridiculous, a feathered melange of clichés and originality, of respectful homage and unrepentant nostalgia. Sometimes it’s comfortingly conventional; other times it’s gloriously off the charts. Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) stars as lyricist Bernie Taupin and Richard Madden (The Bodyguard) as Elton’s manager.

Iceland’s film industry sets the bar high too with two films. Women at War winningly charts the battle middle-aged woman, Halla, who takes on the aluminium industry to prevent it disfiguring her country. The film’s strong impact will linger long after the credits roll as will Arctic, Mads Mikkelsen playing a cargo pilot whose small plane crashes somewhere in the Arctic, the survival thriller ramped up further by an injured woman, part of the rescue party, and whose needs are even greater than his.

Madeline’s Madeline, an invigorating original, follows a teenage girl with previous mental health issues who finds an empowering new pathway in the world of improv theatre, but has to navigate between an over-protective mum (Miranda July) and a director with her own agenda. Madeline is played with a knockout blend of charisma and vulnerability by star-in-the-making Helena Howard.

This week’s £2 Ruby Tuesday Film is The Bookshop. In 1950s Britain, Florence Green (Emily Mortimer), a widow, moves to a small English village, buys an old house that had stood empty for years with the intention to open a bookshop. But there’s opposition, Florence’s choice of bookshop is the very old house that a powerful local aristocrat Violet Gamat (Patricia Clarkson) had her eye on, planning to turn the building that everyone in town calls ‘the old house’ into an arts centre. Also starring Bill Nighy.

Performance events this week are diverse and rich: Van Gogh and Japan, Exhibition on Screen, by the maestro of art film-makers, Phil Grabsky, who explores the love of Japanese art had on the artist, the film visiting Japan, France and the Netherlands (4 June). From the RSC Live comes The Taming of the Shrew (5 June). Expect a sharptongued, quick-tempered Katherine engaged in the battle of the sexes. Don’t miss either the stunning production of All My Sons, starring Sally Field and Bill Pullman in America 1947’s blistering Arthur Miller drama (1 June).

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi Screened at Picturedrome Cinemas GARETH Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot reminded audiences why the titular creature is often considered to be one of cinema’s greatest monsters. A good thing, too, as he’s needed once again – this time teaming up with the cryptozoological agency Monarch to do battle against a smattering of god-sized creatures. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters marks the third entry in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, a shared cinematic universe that has been slowly building towards an epic clash between the roaring reptile and King Kong as depicted in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island.

For the time being, however, Godzilla will have to contend with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah if he’s to make it that far. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance. Returning characters from the previous Godzilla include Sally Hawkins as Dr Vivienne Graham and Ken Watanabe as Dr Ishiro Serizawa, who are now joined by The Conjuring’s Vera Farmiga and Straight Outta Compton’s O’Shea Jackson Jr. as members of Monarch as well as Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as a child caught up in the conflict. Will they make it to the Kong vs Godzilla match of the champions, however? They’ll need to survive through King Of The Monsters first.

Peter James' The House On Cold Hill Monday June 3-Saturday June 8 AN EXTRA matinee has been added for the world premiere production of the spinechilling stage play The House on Cold Hill, adapted from the best-selling 2015 novel of multi-million selling author Peter James.

Overwhelming demand for tickets for the touring production at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre led to adding a performance next Friday.

Based on the author’s own experience in a haunted house, the play will star BAFTAnominated actor and winner of BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing, Joe McFadden as Ollie Harcourt and joining him, as his wife Caro Harcourt, will be award winning actors Rita Simons, Charlie Clements, as Chris, and Persephone Swales-Dawson, as Jade.

In Peter's ghostly mystery, the Harcourt family move into the house of the dreams which h as been empty for 40 years.

However, their dream home quickly turns

into the stuff of nightmares, as they begin to sense that they aren’t the only residents at Cold Hill…

The House on Cold Hill will reunite Peter with two-time Olivier-nominated theatre producer Joshua Andrews, the Olivier award winning director Ian Talbot and award-winning writer Shaun McKenna.

McFadden is perhaps best known for playing series regular Raf di Lucca in BBC1’s Holby City from 2014 - 2017, and as PC Joe Mason in Heartbeat from 2010 - 2014. He partnered Katya Jones in BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing and captured the nation's hearts, eventually winning the series to become the 2017 champion.

Simons played Roxy Mitchell in BBC's EastEnders from 2007-17, and is one of Britain’s best loved TV actresses. Clements was also in the soap from 2006-2010, winning several awards for his performance as Bradley Manning, while Swales-Dawson played serial killer Nico Blake in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks from 2014-16.

EACH year, Pevonia UK presents awards to Spas, Salons and Therapists in six different categories.

The businesses are judged on sales, performance, marketing strategy and activity, training, staffing, creativity, inventiveness and overall success, as well as the results of their customer nominations.

Voting opened on 1st February 2019 and was available for three months.

Over one thousand public votes were received ahead of a meeting, by the panel of judges who had the tricky task of selecting winners in every category.

Winners and runners-up in the ‘Pevonia UK Awards 2018’ were announced on 14 May 2019.

Jane Norman, PR and Marketing Manager for Pevonia UK said “The meeting sees a good deal of deliberation, but the judges look forward to reading the comments put forward by clients of each business. It is wonderful that so many people take the time and effort to vote for their favourites.”

The much-coveted Salon of the Year Award saw joint winners this year, with Chichester-based, Jane Bulbeck, Specialists in skincare & beauty, sharing the title with last year’s winner - Senses of Siam, in Tamworth.

The judges deliberated long and hard over all awards, but this one was the hardest. With two salons demonstrating excellence, they were both crowned ‘winners’.

During the judges’ meeting, comments from the public were discussed. For Jane Bulbeck, Specialists in skincare & beauty, they included: “Very relaxing atmosphere and the

staff are the best ever.”

THe Bognor Regis Post is publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Friday May 10 - THe present Parliament is to hold its last meeting today.

Later in the day, the King will hold a Council at Craigweil House, at which the proclaimation dissolving Parliament will be signed and authorising the new Parliament to meet for the first time on Tuesday, June 25.

THe dissolution proclaimation will be issued in the London Gazette tonight and thereafter the General Election campaign will be in full swing.

On the same day, it was announced a civic welcome was to be given to the King by the Mayor of Windsor, Lt-Col Stephen Wright, on his arrival on Wednesday morning after the King had driven from Craigweil House.

Tuesday, May 14 - THe following notice was issued yesterday by the Bognor Urban District Council: To the inhabitants of Bognor - In connexion with His Majesty's departure from Bognor on Wednesday, at the conclusion of his convalesence here, he has graciously consented, after leaving Craigweil House at 10am, to proceed along the promenade, from west to east, on his journey to Windsor.

LOYAL volunteer Cliff Mewett has been given national recognition for his service with a Bognor Regis charity.

Cliff was presented with a national president's certificate from the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) at its national conference for his outstanding service over 50 years.

THe presentation was made by the president, Air Marshal Sir Baz North, at the event in Birmingham. Cliff joins a select group of members of RAFA's branch in receiving the prestigious award.

A spokesman for RAFA's Bognor Regis branch said: "THe branch and club have benefited greatly over the years from the continued input not only from Cliff but from his wife, Marion, the branch's honoroy Wings (Appeal) officer and we feel that this honour is well deserved."

Cliff served for two years and seven months in the Queen's Regiment Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve and then

joined the Hastings branch of RAFA in 1968. He immediately became involved and served on both the branch and club committees.

Following training by his godfather, who was also a member, Cliff became a standard bearer. It is a role he has continued.

He is pictured above performing the duty at the visit by a Chinook helicopter from 1310 Flight to North Bersted this month.

Cliff moved to Bognor Regis in 1987 and immediately transferred his family's RAFA membership to the town's branch.

As well as his work with RAFA, his role in the town was also taken into account by the charity's national council when it agreed he should receive the certificate.

"Cliff is a well known and respected local historian," the spokesman said, "having published many books on military history and the history of the post office."

Dear Editor, THE elections to the European Parliament were seen as a minireferendum on membership of the EU and are being interpretated by some as an indication of whether the referendum result from 2016 should be considered as being representative of the views held by people today.

In the run up to the referendum, we were subjected to many farcical arguments. At times it was difficult to know what was serious and what risible. In an attempt to avoid such nonsense, I offer this concise summation of the differences between the UK and the EU. THe UK is the product of the philosophy of John Locke, the English philosopher. According to Locke, the duty of government is to protect the liberty and the property of its citizens. Government only receives its legitimacy from the will of the people.

In essence, this means the UK citizens are free to do whatsoever they wish, unless there exists a law to expressly forbid such action.

THe EU is the product of the philosophy of Jean Jacques Rousseau, the Swiss philosopher.

Rousseau holds forth the view that it it is the duty of all citizens to do all they can to help the government. THat it is the duty of the citizens to sacrifice all for the government, in return for which, the government will protect and look after its citizens.

In essence, this means that EU citizens are only permitted the right to act in accordance with laws, which have been passed, which expressly permit such activity.

THis explains why the EU parliament cannot initiate, change or question legislation. We can see that times in the EU have not really changed since Louis XIV made the pronouncement: L'etat, c'est moi.

I do not trust politicians to look after me, especially if this may damage or conflict with their chances of re-election.

CHILDREN in Walberton turned the village blue last Friday.

THe pupils at Walberton and Binsted Primary School dressed in the colour to mark this year's dementia action week and raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

THeir initiative took place after 28 pupils from Year 5 visited Walberton Place Car Home to become Dementia Friends, pictured above.

THe information session was led by the home's manager, Cheryl Rolt, and Peter Rolt, its customer relations manager.

THe children joined the 17 million Dementia Friends worldwide who are working to make communities more inclusive and supportive of people affected by dementia.

By the end of the session, the children had a good understanding of dementia and wrote a dementia friend promise. THese included 'to talk' and to 'talk about happy memories together'.

Mrs Rolt said: "All my staff team is very passionate about caring for people living with dementia.

"We've hosted several Dementia Friends sessions in the local area in the run up to dementia action week, including at the local primary school."

THe team from the newly-opened home, in Yapton Lane, enlisted the support of shops and businesses in the area to turn it blue for the Alzheimer's Society.

Walberton Place Care Home specialises in the care of elderly resident living with dementia.

I AM absolutely disgusted! We are all encouraged to use less plastic but in a field off Chalcroft Lane, the farmer laid down acres of plastic over what, I believe, is maize.

THe crop has grown through the plastic shredding it, so that it is being blown all around the surrounding area. It’s being caught up in the bushes, trees and undergrowth and is obviously a threat to wildlife and the environment.

I’m sure this is not the only farmer growing in this way but whatever has prompted such a disastrous decision? Please can someone explain why this is allowed?

We provide play and social activities for children and young people aged up to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities and their siblings in the Chichester and Bognor Regis districts.

We will support every

child or young person, no matter how complex or challenging their needs.

PACSO has supported children for 20 years with a range of activities, including pre-school groups, after school clubs, and playschemes and trips during halfterms and holidays.

During most of our activities, parent carers don't need to stay. However, we also ran several family events for the whole family to enjoy.

Dear Editor, LINES of hooks and weights left behind are now a daily problem along Aldwick beach.

On a recent Sunday, I waded into the sea to rescue a herring gull which was attached to a fishing line and weight with three barbed hooks through its body and feet - plus it had swallowed the line with weights still attached.

Fortunately, my plumber son had his van nearby with his tool box handy to snip the bird free.

I have picked up the discarded debris every day for ten days. I am not alone in doing this. Ask any dog walker. THis has got to stop.

Farmland became bustling wartime airfield Site played important role in D-Day in 1944 THERE are currently numerous events occurring to remind us of events during the Second World War and one specific event that of the D-Day landings, 75 years ago.

Last week saw the present members of the RAF's 1310 Flight take part in a commemorative service at North Bersted to remember those days. Part of the event saw a Chinook helicopter landing on the playing field, and they were joined by the cyclists, who are soon to cycle from the Pink Pub to Pegasus Bridge in Normandy to join their anniversary events.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, there were American, British, Canadian and other Allied forces who mounted the largest and most ambitious military operation on to the beaches. More than 130,000 men landed in Normandy that day.

THe planning for an invasion of France started after the Battle of Britain and it became apparent many more airfields were required than those operated by the RAF. THe plans came under the title of Operation Hadrian and, initially, there were plans for 82 Advanced Landing Grounds (ALG), in the south of England. Of those, 26 were built of which seven were in Sussex, and they were actually satellite stations from Tangmere airfield.

THere was a master format used, with each

airfield being intended for 50 aircraft, only a few buildings, with two runways that crossed each other. Each runway was 50 yards wide (45.7m), one strip at 1,600 yds long (1,463m) and the other 1,400yds long (1,280m).

THe land used in most cases had previously been used for agriculture, but once acquired it had to be levelled, trees and hedges removed, and a temporary surface installed with concrete bases for aircraft stands.

THese plans began in Bognor Regis late in 1942 when West Sussex County Council started work to prepare the site. In the case of the Bognor ALG the land used, north of Chalcraft Lane, was farmland, and when travelling along Chalcraft Lane today between the Royal Oak and the roundabout junction of the B2166. there is a large section of the hedge missing just after the entrance to the cemetery. THis was where one of the runways crossed over into the West Meads area.

THe surface used for the airfield was known as Summerfield Tracking, which was a metal mesh, and again, several people have told me how over the years they have found pieces of mesh or metal pegs in their gardens or fields.

THe Canadian Royal Engineers carried out the work in May 1943 as part of a training exercise and some of the Canadians remained to be on hand to remove the tracks when the airfield was no longer required.

THe initial specification for the required work was £20,5000.

THe final layout requirement was produced only two months before the required completion date.

However, the work was completed, and the first planes arrived, as planned, on June 1, 1943. THe final cost was £49,448 and 90 per ent of bonuses were paid under the ‘payment by results’ scheme.

Who used the airfield, I am sure is one question? THere were a number of British squadrons, for example 66 Sqdn, 602 ‘City of Glasgow’ Sqdn, 19 Sqdn, also 350 Belgian Sqdn. Finally two squadrons from Norway, 331 and 332.

My research duly resulted in contacts with the Norwegian Archive Department and Little Norway in Canada in addition to a number of people in this country. It is interesting researching a subject of which you have no previous knowledge like aircraft and airfields.

Many of the people involved are, of course, enthusiasts and knew everything about planes, their markings, serial numbers etc.

At the time this airfield was in operation, the men were away in various service duties.

So ,many of the memories came from people who were children, mostly boys and young men, who were quite excited to have ‘their own airfield’ just down the road.

Many families invited ‘officers to tea on a Sunday’, others allowed the men to use their bath, instead of the showers on the base.

Another person remembered that his mother used to do some washing of clothes for the men on a Monday.

THe records we have found to date indicate that Morells Farm was used as the Officers' mess, and its barns were the telephone exchange for the airfield. On the other side of the airstrip, the Old Chapel Forge, as it is

known today, was used as the paymaster’s office, and the disused chapel in the grounds was used as a store. For a time, Spitfire engines were repaired there.

When the Norwegians were here, Crown Prince Olav visited his men and slept under canvas with them in a field near the junction of the B2166 and Hewitts Lane. It was his practice to live in a tent whenever he visited the many sites of the Norwegians.

THe airfield was used by a range of planes including Mustangs, Typhoons and Spitfires and it is incredible today to appreciate that at the height of its use nearly 100 planes were at the airfield.

Avro Ansons were also brought in to deal with the casualties from D-Day and to carry plasma to Normandy. About 100 tents were used for the injured service personnel before they were ferried to various hospitals in Chichester, Petworth and Midhurst.

THe airfield was finally closed in September 1945 and stripped of all its fixtures and fittings and the land returned to the landowners for its previous agricultural usage.

In November 2003, I was contacted by a gentleman who was compiling the story of the Norwegian Airforce.

Bognor Regis was to be included in volume five of the publication. THis brought to light even more information on our airfield, which was used in one of the biggest operations during the Second World War. I would hope that when a housing estate is constructed, as frequently mentioned, we can remember this event and the men who left our small town to take part in this major event.

The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre takes in unwanted, abandoned or stray cats, kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs, and gives them a good quality of life until it is possible to find a loving, permanent home for them. Activities include: educating the public, neutering the animals, feeding and general care, and finding forever homes for the many animals in their care. They are seeking a van driver for between one and two days a week to collect and drop off furniture for their charity shops and alternate weekly tip runs. Applicants must be over 25 years of age and physically capable as lifting will be involved. They are looking for someone who can work independently as well as being part of a team alongside the CRRC Charity Shop Coordinator. You will be able to use your own initiative, with a positive and courteous manner.

Self-advocacy Group Volunteer – Impact Initiatives

Impact provides support to 4 self-advocacy groups for people with learning disabilities across West Sussex. They have a volunteer opportunity to support Voice at their monthly meeting in Bognor Regis on the 1st Thursday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. Voice is a user-led group, run by and for people with learning disabilities with the help of the paid Group Supporter employed by Impact Initiatives. They aim to help each other to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to have a say in the things that affect them, raise awareness of their concerns and make life better for people with learning disabilities. At their meetings they talk about the things that are important to them.

The volunteer would work alongside the group facilitator and offer practical help at the meeting as well as helping group members to speak up for themselves and participate in the meetings.

Creative Workshop Learning and Engagement Volunteer – Chichester Cathedral Learning and Engagement Department

Chichester Cathedral is committed to supporting people of all ages to learn from this unique and rich environment. It is a place where everyone is welcome to immerse themselves in nine centuries of Cathedral stories - to explore debate and share. Volunteers play an important role in supporting everyone to learn about the Cathedral past and present. Creative Workshop volunteers are facilitators of art, craft and/or drama workshops which are offered as part of the programme for schools, colleges, adults and families. You will: provide a friendly welcome for everyone who visits; support and/or lead the delivery of creative workshops for a wide range of audiences; and attend planning meetings and prepare resources.

Helpers – Chichester Stroke Club

Chichester Stroke Club meet at the Newell Centre, Chichester on a Thursday morning to give support to stroke victims. The Club is a unique facility providing continued aftercare and encouragement to stroke survivors when they leave hospital through mental and physical stimulation and support and respite for carers and partners, enabling them to meet likeminded people in a relaxed environment. The club also raises awareness of stroke to the local community through fundraising, website, speakers and outings. Able-bodied helpers are needed to help those who have had a stroke at the club on a Thursday morning from 10am - 12noon. You will need to be able to help others move around, fold up chairs and tables etc.

Running BANK holiday weekend saw five members of Bognor Tone Zone running club take the long trip up to Edinburgh for the marathon.

Jessica Thomson, Peter Ramsdale, Trev and Donna Strowger and Adam Norgett all took part in the 26 mile race through the historic Scottish capital.

The weather was typical of north of the border - rain, breaks of sunshine and strong winds for the last six miles, making it tough for the runners in the closing stages.

That did not deter Jess who was first to finish for the club in a personal best time of 3 hours 26 minutes.

Trev was next across the line finishing, in a personal best time of 3.32. Adam and Donna also recorded personal best times of 4.12 and 4.17 respectively. Peter completed another marathon this year in a solid time of 4.40.

In London, were Justin Geri and Paul Wells running the Vitality London 10k along with Mo Farah.

Geri finished in 48 minutes, whilst Wells finished in 58 minutes, a new PB for the club runner.

Darts LEGENDS player Gary Blackwood hit a treble of 180s in the standout performance of week five of the Bognor Summer Darts League.

Averaging nearly 30 points per dart, Blackwood helped fire his side to a comfortable victory over Hunston Hares.

Pagham need a win to keep touch PAGHAM CC face an early test to their title credentials as they look to bounce back to winning ways at Roffey 2s tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side remain second in Division Three West after suffering their first defeat of the season at home to leaders Steyning last time out.

With tomorrow's opponents sitting third, Pagham know that they need a win to keep in touch with a strong Steyning side.

Hanks will be pleased with the fight shown by his side in their home defeat.

After winning the toss and losing their skipper early on, Jack Stannard (80) and Nick Smith (72) added 113 for the second wicket.

Much of this scoring was put down to Smith who smashed 12 fours and two sixes to rack up his score in just 50 balls.

Pagham though were unable to capitalise on this fast start with late contributions from Justin Scott (32*) and Richard Bird (16*) helping them to 240-6 off their 45 overs.

In reply, the hosts bowled well and the game was finely balances at 88-3. But Steyning's captain Oliver Collins (96) and Gary Hunt (67) swung the game in their favour, with the

visitors reaching their target with six wickets and seven balls to spare.

In Division Two Chichester Priory Park will be looking to make it back-to-back victories when they welcome bottom side Goring to Goodwood tomorrow (12.30pm).

Matthew Geffen's side ended their winless start to the season with a 42-run victory against Ifield last time.

Jay Hartard (88) was the start of the Chi innings, ably supported by Abhishek Raut (41) as Priory reached 248-5 off their 45 overs.

In reply, skipper Geffen led the way with the ball, taking 3-29 as the visitors were bowled out for just 206.

Fellow Division Two side Bognor, who are just one spot above Chi in the table, are Ifield's next opponents at the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side suffered a narrow 38 run loss to St Leonards last time out.

Overseas player Roy Kaia starred on both sides of the innings, taking 3-45 before hitting 75 as Bognor chased down a score of 206.

It proved in vain though with only Mikey Harris (20)and Joel Baker (28) providing support in a tally of 168 all out.

Festival is next for Goodwood GOODWOOD'S May Festival has proved to be a big hit with racegoers as thousands flocked to the Sussex track for a mouthwatering three days of action.

More than 23,000 people attended the course last weekend with high-quality cards including four listed races.

Crowds were drawn to the promise of chef displays and a food market that gave them the chance to try and buy a range of local produce.

But it was the action on the track that delivered the real treats for racegoers as a mouthwatering line up of potential Group One horses delivered on the track.

Among the head-turners was the Mark Johnston trained Elarqam who romped home in the opener of Saturday's card.

The 11/4 shot has been dubbed a Group winner in waiting after enjoying an unbeaten juvenile campaign.

But, after a poor showing last year, Dane O'Neil guided him to a commanding victory in the Listed Betfair Best Odds On ITV

Races Festival Stakes over ten furlongs.

Another big winner on Saturday was Mirage Dancer, who claimed the ÂŁ50,000 Bet Your Way On The Betfair Exchange Tapster Stakes.

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club are taking well to their new surroundings in Division One of the Solent League with backto-back wins.

First up were the University of Portsmouth Shafters, who came to Oaklands Park with a typically young and athletic squad.

The Falcons wasted no time in the early stages, with the first seven hitters reaching base to get Chichester 12-5 ahead by the third inning. Patience and discipline at the plate was key as the Falcons edged around the bases steadily.

Pitcher Jason Mercer was sharp on several comebackers as Bronte Harvey and Cary Chen ably managed the middle infield.

The Falcons chipped away, adding two or three in the next few innings as debutant Beth Ash, hitting 4 for 5 on the day, kept right field locked down to frustrate the Shafters and restrict them to just two runs through to the sixth inning.

With the score at 18-7 in the final inning, the Falcons got the green light to swing away with great effect as Warr tripled, Dave Piesse homered to left and Ash added a further run to win the game at 24-11.

The following week saw Chichester travel west to face the experienced Portsmouth Dodgers.

A good start at bat saw the Falcons get five runs ahead but Ben Sawkins at shortstop was outstanding, making three full-stretch diving catches to leave the Dodgers scratching their heads and unable to score until the third inning.

By now the Falcons were 9-2 up thanks to hard-working Pete Martin, who made a dazzling running grab in centre-left before hitting an RBI triple as Portsmouth began to panic.

Mercer and Olly Howley pounded homers in the fourth before Warr found her swing and forced a fielding error to get Ash round, and David Morris hit opposite field to bring in a further two to take the game well beyond the Dodgers grasp at 13-6.

There was still time for base hits from Molly Rayner and Sarah d’Agar before Sawkins again silenced the field with another spectacular dive to earn the Falcons a 21-7 victory.

Harvey scoops players honour in club awards

to o f Bognor will face Chi City in the Sussex shield

ROCKS skipper Harvey Whyte and young left back Joe Tomlinson were the big winners as the Rocks rounded off their season in style.

More than 100 people packed into Seasons bar at Nyewood Lane last weekend for the club's annual awards evening.

Captain Whyte was all smiles as he received the players' player of the year award from supporters club chairman Ian Guppy, pictured left.

The skipper, who lifted the Sussex Senior Cup for the club for the first time in 32 years, was also awarded the Chairman's Cup. Tomlinson was the other player to be singled out for honours.

His performances from left back after joining the Rocks on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion received rave reviews.

The youngster was justly rewarded with the Supporters Club Player of the Season as well as Most Improved Player.

Other awards handed out included the Kevin Clement Trophy to top scorer Jimmy Muitt and Goal of the Season to Bradley Lethbridge for his strike against Leatherhead.

Chad Field, Calvin Davies and Dan Lincoln were all honoured for making 100 appearances while Doug Tuck received a trophy for playing in 300 matches

in a Bognor shirt.

The Sportsman's Award went to Lee Roberts, who has helped establish Rocks Radio, an online match commentary service provided during Bognor matches. *Sussex Senior Cup winners Rocks will face SCFL Premier champions Chichester City in the annual Sussex Community Shield.

The match, on July 30 at Lancing's Culver Road (7.30pm), will add a competitive edge to Bognor's pre-season preparations with the newlypromoted City keen to impress ahead of their first ever season in Bostik South East.

Admission is £6 adults, £3 concessions and £1 under 18s with all proceeds supporting the NSPCC South & Mid Sussex Branch as part of its 60th anniversary.

Ken Benham, Chief Executive of the Sussex County FA, said: “We are delighted to be able to continue our support for our charitable partners the NSPCC, and help celebrate the 60th year of the South & Mid Sussex Branch.

"With the help of the Sussex football community we can hopefully raise as much as possible at the Sussex Community Shield to ensure their valuable work continues."

Striker Khassal to leave City CHICHESTER City striker Cherelle Khassal has left the club as the Oaklands Park outfit turn their attention on rebuilding under new manager Sadie Blakely.

Chi defied all expectations last season soaring to a third place finish in the National Southern Premier as well as lifting the Sussex county cup.

But the departure of manager Aaron Smith has meant that the club has entered the summer looking to rebuild.

A statement issued earlier this month confirmed former keeper Blakely would be taking charge and the emphasis would be placed on bringing young players through the age groups.

That emphasis is expected to lead to an exodus of senior players - with Khassal the first to confirm she will be playing her football elsewhere next season.

The Republic of Ireland international, who has racked up more than 50 appearances on the wing and up front for Chi, was integral to the club lifting the tier four title in 2017/18.

But injuries last term left the 28-year-old frustrated and Khassal has now drawn a line under her three-year stint at Oaklands Park.

Confirming her departure on social media, Khassal said: "Putting on that green and white jersey, I would always give 100 per cent as this club means a lot to me.

"I have had an amazing time with Chi but this year has been a low point for me with injuries at the start and injuries at the end which has resulted in a bad end to the season for me.

"A massive thank you to everyone for what you have done for me as a player. My time at Chi has now come to an end and I'm very much looking forward to my next chapter.

"I want to wish Sadie and her management the best of luck this season and future seasons, I'm sure you will do a fantastic job."

Blakely, along with her assistant Laura Galway, will be wasting no time in building a squad for next season as Chi look to keep their status in the third tier of the women's game.

With Khassal now gone, the pressure will be on to tie down a series of key players, including top scorer Molly Clark.

Skipper Lauren Cheshire and experienced

centre half Tammy Waine will also be high on the retained list - although both have been linked elsewhere.

A club statement said: "We are, as a committee excited about the future of the club and bringing football to girls and ladies in the local area and progressing our club behind the scenes ready for when we can make the next steps forward."

BOGNOR'S first signing of the season is a familiar face James Crane, who rejoins the Rocks after a year at Worthing.

We sat down with the goalscoring defender to find out how he feels on his return to the club How does it feel to be returning to Bognor?

It’s good to be back!

Obviously I did spend a big part of my career at Nyewood Lane so I'm pleased to be back.

Undoubtedly, after ten years at Bognor, the club has got a big place in my heart. I did need a change, though, which is why I left.

But, there are a lot of factors in football when deciding which club is right, and for me by far the most important is a club which makes me put my head into a cement mixer, which values players running through brick walls and this is it for me.

What did you learn from your time at Worthing?

There's no doubt that Hinsh [Adam Hinshelwood] is a good manager.

They are a good team, the training is good and they are looking to build something.

I've not got a bad word to say about them.

Having said that I was always a Bognor player to their fans and it was quite difficult on that front.

When the time came and we split on amicable terms and there was only really one club I could go to.

Was it strange playing against the Rocks (and a number of former team mates) last year?

It was in some ways. It was a really strange build up as I had friends playing on both sides. I also know a lot of fans on both sides too, with spending so long at Bognor and teaching in

But as soon as I cross that white line I am very competitive and it doesn't matter who I'm playing.

I don’t see who I'm playing against, it's just my job to stop my opponent. I play the game whole heartedly and that will never change.

What are your plans for the summer before returning to pre-season?

I'm just looking forward to enjoying some time off with the family. I have a young boy who is going to be one in the next few months.

So I'll be spending some time with him and my wife, doing some of the things I've not been able to do during the season, like going away or seeing friends.

To be honest I just want to get going, get fit and start playing again.

Are you looking forward to training under Robbie?

My previous time at Bognor was all under Dabba and Jamie so it will be interesting having someone new.

A lot of lads have been very complimentary about Robbie, though. He also tells it exactly how it is. I like that and it's something I respond well to.

What can the Rocks achieve next season?

It will be the same as always.

In this league teams are doing one of two things, either fighting to go up or trying to avoid going down.

In most of my time at Bognor we were chasing promotion so I'd like to think it will be the same next year.

A good start is key and once you get that you can start laying the foundations and then challenging for the top as it gets round to spring.

We just have to take it week by week and see how it goes.

Returning Rock Crane aims to give club a lift

Middleton out to bounce back with Nomads next MIDDLETON CC are looking to return to winning ways in the Sussex Premier Division as they look to bounce back from a 56-run loss to bottom-side Eastbourne.

Sean Heather's side head to Preston Nomads tomorrow (11.30am) looking to continue their good start to the season.

Three wins from four have left Middleton sitting in third place in what looks to be a competitive division.

But Heather's side missed out on the opportunity to go top when they came out on the wrong side of a runfest at the Sports Ground in Sea Lane.

It means that Middleton head to Nomads tomorrow with an identical record to their fourth-placed hosts.

Heather will be hoping that his bowlers fare a little better than last weekend when Eastbourne defied their place in the table to smash the home side's attack to all parts of the ground in scoring 372-8.

After being put into bat the visitors' opener James Hockley quickly set about the Middleton attack.

By the time Heather's side made the breakthrough with Matthew Reynolds trapping Malcolm Johnson LBW (21), Hockley had already reached his half century in a total of 77-1.

He continued to get on the front foot, adding 59 with

Eastbourne skipper Jacob Smith (35) before being joined

by Alastair Orr. The pair then put their foot down, before Hockley eventually fell for 119 off 104 balls when Mahesh Rawat snapped up a chance off the bowling of Harry Hovey.

Orr then kept on the scoring, reaching his own century as he hit ten fours and four sixes in his total of 116 off 84 balls before being dismissed in the final over of the innings.

Tommy Davies (3-62) was the pick of the Middleton bowlers as the visitors posted a mammoth total.

Heather's side set about their task with real intent as Hovey (63) and the skipper (46) added 113 for the opening wicket.

The fall of Hovey though saw Middleton lose three quick wickets with overseas player Rawat and Patrick Colvin forced to rebuild.

They did with style adding 155 for the fourth wicket before Colvin (72) was caught off the bowling of David Twine (4-62).

Rawat (81 off 72 balls) then fell one run later with the Indian's departure all but ending Middleton's hopes.

Only Will Burrows (13) could then reach double figures as Heather's side were dismissed for 316 with nearly four overs still to play - 56 runs adrift of the Eastbourne tally.

Football CHICHESTER City have revealed their pre-season schedule ahead of the first ever season in Bostik South East.

Miles Rutherford's side won promotion to step four of the non-league pyramid after winning the SCFL Premier at a canter.

They will open preparations for the new season with an away match against an Isle of Wight representative side on July 6th.

That will be followed by games at Arundel (July 13), Christchurch (July 16), Hamble (July 20) and AFC Portchester (July 23).

A home match against Bostik Premier side Worthing on July 27 follows before the Sussex Community Shield clash with Bognor at Lancing on July 30.

Pre-season will be wrapped up with an away match at Rutherford's former side Moneyfields on August 3.

ROCKS stalwart James Crane said it was an easy decision to make to return to Nyewood Lane from Sussex rivals Worthing.

The goal-scoring left back proved to be a fan favourite as he racked up ten seasons at Bognor.

During that time he made more than 400 appearances, including netting a long range winner against Altrincham in the FA Trophy that culminated in the club being just one game from Wembley.

But, after leaving for the Rebels last summer in search of a new challenge, Crane has now returned to the Rocks ready to help the club try and win promotion from Bostik Premier.

In an exclusive interview with the Post, the former Hearts player said he was delighted to return.

Crane said: "It’s good to be back! Undoubtedly, after ten years at Bognor, the club has got a big place in my heart."

He added: "In most of my time at Bognor we've been chasing promotion so I'd like to think it will be the same next year.

"A good start is key and once you get that you can start laying the foundations and then challenging for the top as it gets round to spring."

A 14th placed finish last term was a disappointment to all involved with the club - especially as with two months of the season to go, Bognor were firmly in the playoff hunt.

A win in the final of the Sussex Senior Cup against Burgess Hill Town ensured the season ended on a positive note.

But Pearce is under no illusions that the hard work in planning for next season begins now - and he believes signing Crane is the first piece of the jigsaw.

Pearce said: "Everyone knows all about James' qualities and it was such a simple decision to make for us and for him. He has an abundance of ability, great desire and he knows where the goal is, too. The supporters love him and I think it's fair to say he is back at his spiritual home now.

"In modern parlance, signing James was what is called, I believe, a 'no-brainer'.

"As a club we are determined to build on last season and as much as we can, we want to get our business done early.

"We have a number of players who we are talking to and we very much hope that we can bring the fans positive recruitment news soon."
