New battle to restore pub Plenty of

THe latest stage to restore THe Ship Inn has been prompted by the sale of the property and the ending of a protection order.

Roger Beam, chairman of THe Friends of THe Ship Inn, said it was essential everyone who cared for the future of the prominent building joined the latest campaign.

"It's the same fight we staged five years ago but with different owners. Our main concern is to get the building registered as an asset of community value again.

"I have asked for support from all the local councillors and the MP. "We have got the backing of the local people to turn THe Ship Inn into a pub again. THey want to see it as a hub for the community in the future.

"We have put in a bid to acquire it and

run it as a pub/restaurant for the good of the community.

"THis place has been vacant and shuttered for two years. THe situation is quite unacceptable and it has got to be resolved. Our fear is that the new owners might want to turn the site into a residential development.

"It will become another block of flats but it is very difficult to get in and out of the car park and we would fight that plan

THe Aldwick Street pub opened in the early 19th century but it was closed by its then owner, Enterprise Inns (now EI Group), in 2014. THe company sold a 15year lease to Morrisons.

College lecturer, Mike, 64, lived with his parents - Jim and Joyce Plummer in Felpham in the 1980s and wrote the first draft of his book in their garden in Naiad Gardens.

While he lived there he met and eventually married his wife, Janet Robertson, who taught at Felpham Community College.

She was the best friend of his parents' next door neighbour, Irene Freebrey, who was Janet's head of department.

His father now lives in Middleton and Mike frequently travels from his home in Poole to visit him.

Back in 1981, Mike was at a crossroads in life. His current path of a college lecturer led to a secure career climbing the ladder of promotion and the other would send him to the east coast of South America far away from safety and security.

He spent eight weeks on the continent to start a three-year world trip. THe hazards in store for him quickly became apparent.

He said: "Unfortunately, I had a slight accident while travelling up the River Amazon four days out of Bellem.

"When I eventually got my wrist x-rayed by a specialist in Manues, he told me I had smashed it in four places and to go home and have it operated on within seven days or have it amputated due to gangrene. I took his advice."

Mike also spent more than three months backpacking across Canada in the mid80s, nine weeks in south-east Asia and a honeymoon trekking around Ireland.

But he has just published a book about the white knuckle adventures he experienced in South America.

Tales from a South American Storm Drain describes Mike's travels with wry humour as he followed his dream.

He recounts having a sub-machine gun shoved into his stomach, the acute terror of wandering around the outskirts of a notorious favela in Rio late at night and the exotic delight of a wild love affair with a Bahian native woman who couldn't speak English.

Isabelle, 10, was judged to have created the most imaginative flower bed in this year’s contest by Bognor Regis in Bloom and the town's Girlguiding district.

A record 210 entries were received as the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers aged from 5-13 took on the challenge of marking the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing in flowers.

1st Pagham and Aldwick Brownie Isabelle said: “I’m really excited to win the competition. I used my imagination for the design.

“I created a half moon with craters in it. On the moon, I had someone planting a flag. I used grey and brown flowers for the moon, white for the astronaut and red and blue for the flag.

“I will be coming here to see my display when the flowers have bloomed.”

Isabelle’s entry has been reproduced in a flower bed at the mini-golf course in Waterloo Square by the town council’s Town Force and is about to bloom. THey used about 500 verbena, lobelia, petunia, salvia, marigold and surfinia plants in the 10sq m plot.

Janet Erkiert, the district commissioner for Bognor Regis Guides, said: “THe girls love the opportunity to join in and design a flower bed. It’s good for their community spirit and it uses their imaginations. THey really enjoy it.”

THe competition, which has been going for some 17 years, also showed them how to translate their designs on paper into the ground, she said.

Caroline Spencer, the Bognor Regis West district commissioner, said: “I

would like to add my congratulations to Isabelle for her innovative design.”

Isabelle and other category winners were presented with their certificates and prizes at the mini-golf course by the town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall.

He said: “Isabelle’s design looks amazing. It is good to see how Girlguiding gets involved in the competition. It was very difficult to choose an overall winner because the standard was so high.

“I would like to see other organisations, like the Scouts, get involved in similar competitions. It can only be good for the town.”

Isabelle also won the Brownies section of the competition. THe other winners were: Jessica Dickens (1st Bognor Regis Rainbows), Alice Sanders (Bognor Regis Rangers) and Annalise Towse (3rd Felpham Guides).

FAMILY members have paid tribute to a man who died after an assault at Butlin's in Bognor Regis.

Michael Loughlin, 52, died at Royal Sussex County Hospital on June 18 after he suffered a punch to the head just before midnight on June 14.

His relatives said this week: "Mick was a beloved partner, father, granddad, brother and uncle.

"He was a man who deeply loved his family and his family loved, doted and depended upon him.

"We are all truly lost without this generous, kind and funny man. He was a person we all went to in times of confusion and he never failed to give the right advice.

"Michael was a dedicated follower of Luton Town Football Club. He was a season ticket holder and was over the moon at their recent promotion.

"To put it simply, Mick lived life to its fullest. He never missed an opportunity to try new things and had so much to live for. He achieved a great deal in his life and had so much more he wanted to see and do.

"To find the right words to describe our loss is impossible. A piece of our hearts has been lost and can never be replaced. We will carry our memories of him in our hearts forever."

Sussex Police have urged anyone who witnessed the assault to get in contact with them without delay.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme, of the major crime team, is the senior investigating officer.

He said: "THere are lots of people in the bar at the time of the assault and we want to speak to everyone who was a witness.

` Cyclists' cheques A CELEBRATION is being held tomorrow to present the funds raised by the 26 Pink Pub cyclists from around Bognor Regis.

THis will be taking place in the evening at the pub, THe Royal Oak, in Chichester Road.

THe fundraisers will be cycling in their familiar Home Guard uniforms from Butlin's in Gloucester Road at 4pm.

THeir expected arrival at the pub will be 4.30pm. THree bands will be performing and the money the cyclists raised with their journey to Pegasus Bridge in Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6 will be presented to two charities.

At least £110,000 has been raised.

Of the final total, 90 per cent will be given to armed forces charity, All Call Signs, and the rest to Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.

THose who drive to the pub have been asked to park thoughtfully in the surrounding roads. No parking will be available at the pub.

` Cheerleader day

CHEERLEADERS are being sought in Bognor Regis.

Potential new members for the Smart Cheer team in the town should go along to trials being held tomorrow at Unit 16a, Castlegrove Business Park in Durban Road.

A spokesman said: “Smart Cheer are looking for new cheerleaders of all ages and all abilities."

THe session for boys and girls aged 5-11 will take place from 1pm-2pm.

For those aged over 12, the time will be 2pm-3.30pm. THose selected will have the chance to compete with the team all over the UK.

Homes fight decision wait A HIGH COURT judge is deciding whether to allow Pagham councillors to succeed in their bid to stop plans for hundreds of homes.

Mrs Justice Andrews decided to reserve her judgement in the case for a judicial review of the decision to allow the 400 dwellings south of Summer Lane.

THe case has been brought by Pagham Parish Council against Arun District Council in relation to how it granted planning permission for the homes.

Nicola Jones, the parish council's clerk, said: "It is a case of sitting and waiting.

"It is frustrating that the judgement was reserved but the hearing did not finish until 3.45pm and the judge was not prepared to make a judgement at that point.

"It is likely to take a couple of weeks before we receive her judgement.

"It was a fascinating day in court and our legal team certainly pressed our case in front of the judge and asked lots of questions."

THe parish council's barrister is Ashley Rowe, who recently represented Aldingbourne Parish Council in a judicial review, and its planning consultant is Paul Collins. As well as Mrs Jones, planning committee chairman, Cllr Dawn Hall, and Cllr Caroline Spencer, a member of the committee, were in court for the hearing.

THe day of legal arguments took place in court three of the Royal Courts of

Justice on Tuesday.

THe parish council alleges the advice about the impact of the housing on the area's historic buildings, such as St THomas a'Becket Church, given to members of Arun's development control committee when they approved the proposals last November by their planning officers, failed to reflect the comments by Historic England.

Arun is adamant the advice was correct.

"THe community is behind us on this matter," said Mrs Jones. "We would not have taken the matter this far if that was not the case.

"Most people who attempt a judicial review don't get to the stage we have got. It's a very low success rate so to get to a hearing proves the judges so far have been convinced that we have a case."

If Mrs Justice Andrews backs the parish council, it means the housing application by Hanbury (PM) Ltd has to go back to Arun's committee to make a new decision based on fresh advice from its officers. It will not mean the housing plan has to be scrapped.

An Arun spokeswoman said it would not making a formal response about the hearing until it received the verdict from Mrs Justice Andrews.

A judicial review is a challenge to a way in which a decision has been made rather than the rights and wrongs of the decision.

End of road for library after council withdraws vehicle?

A FEAR has been expressed that the mobile library service based in Bognor Regis could be scrapped.

West Sussex County Council has said in the past week the vehicle which provides the service has been taken off the road.

It says the mobile library has been suffering problems in the past year which had left it unusable.

THis leaves its hundreds of booklovers who relied on its fortnightly visits without the ability to borrow or return their favourite volumes.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Bognor Regis E) said he was dismayed by the news.

"I'm deeply unhappy that, going by the email I've received, the county council have had a clear indication that the library has been having problems.

"THey should have started to plan for its replacement a year ago when they first knew it was an ageing vehicle.

"THis has been happening in slow motion and I want to know what the library service has been doing about it.

"To me, this seems a backdoor way of being able to reduce or cut the service."

THe mobile library based at Bognor Regis Library in London Road served 60 locations on its fortnightly timetable.

Its area stretched from Findon to Northchapel and across to the boundary with Hampshire. It was said last year 800 people in those locations took the chance to indulge themselves in a novel or collection of short stories from its shelves.

Around Bognor Regis, the library made stops between 30-40 minutes at

locations such as Grassmere Car Park in Felpham, Shrubbs Field in Middleton and Pagham's THe Parade.

Further afield, it visited East Dean Village Hall, Bignor's Manor Farm and THe Green at Northchapel.

"THe mobile library remains a vital lifeline for many people who don't have their own transport throughout the Bognor Regis area and further afield.

"In Bognor Regis, we have a disproportionately high number of older people, which means the service will continue to have an importance and relevance into the future," said Cllr Oppler.

He said he would be formally seeking a replacement vehicle be bought to enable the service to be resumed as soon as possible.

"THis is not just about people being able to borrow books. It's also the human contact they gain from visiting the library.

THat is just as important," he said.

News about the vehicle's withdrawal was given in an email by Cllr Debbie Kennard, the council's cabinet member for safer stronger communities.

She wrote that the mobile service had spent 'a significant time' off the road in the past year owing to mechanical failures.

"Unfortunately, the vehicle used is no longer serviceable and the difficult decision has been taken to take it off the road permanently," she stated.

She added the decision was made after advice from the council's transport services section, which was responsible for assessing the vehicle's roadworthiness.

Pub fight starts again From page one THis company was also unable to make a success of the shop and it shut in 2017.

THe Friends' offer to buy the property was rejected by the EI Group. THe situation stayed at an impasse until it was one of 400 properties bought by Tavern Propco Ltd, based in Jersey.

THis was set up by Texas-based Davidson Kempner Capital Management, one of the world's biggest hedge fund investors, which specialises in hospitality and entertainment property.

THe Friends has also made an offer for the building to Tavern Propco Ltd, without a response.

In the meantime, the asset of community value status for the pub ends this weekend after five years.

To get a new registration, the Friends has to prove to Arun District Council residents in the area support the pub's re-opening. "We have 350 members and we want as many people as possible to join us show Arun that we all want to see the building become a pub again," said Mr Beam.

Among those backing the campaign are Aldwick

resident Robert Wootton, his wife, Catherine Wootton, son Grant Wootton, and daughter-in-law, also called Catherine Wootton.

Robert said: "We would like it to go back to being a pub/restaurant. It's very convenient and it used to be a nice local to go to. It just needed a tidy up. We would like to see it back as it was."

Becoming an asset of community value adds a protection to a building. Its means the community's views have to be taken into account when the owner wants to sell in certain circumstances.

Residents have up to six months to raise the money needed to make a bid to buy the property. If they succeed, the owner can still sell it to someone else.

Arun said the sale in March was outside the scope of the law which governs the sale of an asset of community value because of the existing lease.

"THe sale of the freehold of the former Ship Inn was without vacant possession due to the existence of the Morrisons lease. It does not therefore fall within the definition of relevant disposal."

VILLAGERS are being asked if they are likey to need affordable homes in three villages in the coming years.

A door to door survey about the subject is being carried out by the Community Land Trust for Aldingbourne, Barnham and Eastergate.

Affordable homes are properties for rent or part-purchase (shared ownership) made available for those who are unable to meet their housing needs on the open market.

THe trust has been working with Arun District Council, the parish councils for the villages and developers to identify sites where affordable housing might be provided, especially for people living or working in the villages, or with a strong connection to people living in them.

Trust chairman Louise Beaton said: "Forthcoming development in the villages provides the opportunity for the trust to acquire some of these homes specifically for the benefit of local residents and people working locally.

"But we need to know how many local people are likely to need affordable homes and what kind of homes they are likely to need, in order to deliver the right number of homes at the right sizes.

"Affordable housing for rent is usually allocated to those with the highest need from a wide area and so-called affordable housing to buy has often proved beyond the means of young local families.

"We hope to address that gap and also enable older residents to remain in the villages as their circumstances change."

Aldwick Parish Council's members agreed to give £10,000 towards the legal costs incurred by Pagham Parish Council in its fight to stop more 1,000 new homes being built in its area.

THe decision will go towards the money which Pagham spent on its High Court case on Tuesday and is expecting to spend on a public appeal this October.

Pagham's councillors have budgeted a total of £86,000 for both cases. THey were given total support at the extraordinary meeting of Aldwick Parish Council called to discuss the donation on Monday.

Cllr Lilian Richardson, its chairman, said: "It's important we contribute to this because it's an expensive process for any parish council to undertake.

"THis is going to make a difference to their cases. However, the judicial review is not their only case. THere is the planning inquiry as well."

Cllr Stella Coppard said: "We are honour bound to help them because they are taking the burden on this.

"It will affect us immensely, because everything has to come through Aldwick.

"We really think we should do our best to support them in anyway we can. THey definitely need our support."

Cllr Richard Gotheridge said: "I would rather the parish council spent £10,000 on playgrounds or toilet refurbishments

but it's hugely significant and important that we are seen to be supporting our neighbouring parish council.

"THe impact will be felt in our area - the impact on the roads and all the other issues that have been raised with the local amenities etc.

"THe local plan put these strategic sites (for housing) in this area voted for by the previous Arun.

"We are now going to have to unpick some of that because the infrastructure will not be there before the homes, which is disappointing."

Cllr Carol Birch said: "THe message I would like to send is we are fully supporting Pagham Parish Council and recognise this is a significant contribution towards it."

Cllr John Bass said it was essential Aldwick Council had proof of the use to which the money had been put. THis would enable it to justify the spending to its residents.

THe nine councillors present agreed to request details from Pagham Council about how the money had been spent.

Tuesday's High Court case involved 400 homes on land south of Summer Lane. But Pagham Council is also taking part in October's planning inquiry to fight an appeal by developers for 300 homes in Hook Lane.

THe other housing sites are Sefter Road (280 dwellings) and Church Barton Farm (65 homes). Both have been backed by Arun.

Town council has opened aid applications for next year APPLICATIONS for grant aid in 2020 are being invited by Bognor Regis Town Council.

Organisations whose work benefits the town's residents have until September 27 to seek the cash.

Jo Davis, the council's civic and office manager, said: "In 2019, a total amount of about £42,000 was awarded to local organisations...ranging from

Full details, including application forms, can be read at the council's website - bognorregis.gov.uk - and collected from its offices on the first floor of the town hall in Clarence Road.

Applications must be received in paper form by 5pm on September 27.

A PETITION which seeks national attention for Far East prisoners of war has been backed by a North Bersted resident.

Jill Robertson's father, Stanley Moore, was held by the Japanese in the infamous Changi jail for three-and-a-half years in the Second World War. THe plight of thousands of servicemen like him is the subject of a petition at petition.parliament.uk to establish a national day which commemorates the significance of August 15, 1945, when the Japanese surrendered to end the war.

Just under the 10,000 needed to prompt a response from the government had signed the petition by Wednesday night.

Jill said the need for greater recognition of Far Eastern PoWs was shown by the decision to move next May's bank holiday from Monday, May 4, to Friday, May 8, to create a three-day commemoration of 75 years since VE Day. "Recently announced as a public holiday for VE Day, the Victory in Japan

THe petition states: "Over 50,000 UK servicemen were held as Japanese prisoners of war in South East Asia between 1941-45, of whom 25 per cent were either killed or died during captivity.

"THese brave men felt cruelly overlooked upon their repatriation and beyond, and a national day of commemoration would go some way to putting that right."

Jill, of Violet Close, is the West Sussex co-ordinator for the Children of Far Eastern Prisoners of War charity.

Her father was captured in the fall of Singapore on February 15, 1942.

He sailed from Liverpool in October, 1941, and thought he was going to the Middle East but the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour saw the ship diverted to Singapore.

` Shop break-ins RECENT burglaries to mobile phone shops in Bognor Regis and Chichester are being investigated by the police.

Its officers are also making enquiries about an attempted break-in to a sports shop in Bognor Regis. THe incidents are not being linked.

College benefits from donations PRE-LOVED furniture is helping students at Felpham Community College to learn.

THe college has taken part in a national initiative, Business2Schools, which coordinates donations from companies and distributes them to schools who have requested a need. THe equipment can be computers, furniture or stationery.

THree deliveries were received by the college.THey included desks and storage units, stationery, kitchen equipment and computer screens.

Its headteacher, Mark Anstiss, said: "THis is such a good idea. Businesses get to ethically recycle their equipment which is surplus to requirements, and schools get the benefit."

Social group enjoys walk MORE than 20 people took part in the first walk in Bognor Regis held by a charity to celebrate people's differences.

THe Learning Disability Pride stroll along the seafront was held by the Aldingbourne Trust's My Network social group under the slogan 'We are all different, it's OK to be different'.

Debbie Allsopp, one of the group's coordinators, said: "We work with people with learning disabilities and we encourage them to be part of the community.

"THe Aldingbourne Trust works hard to help its clients live useful lives."

Some of those who belong to the group were joined by their supporters for the twomile round trip last THursday.

THe companies from which the college received equipment were Hunters Contractors, Gensler and Merit.

Mr Anstiss met Business2Schools' managing director, Lindsey Parslow, to discuss the best options for the college before the deliveries were arranged.

Business2Schools started last year and has grown considerably. A large range of businesses are keen to donate their unwanted goods and arrange for the furniture and supplies to be moved.

THe aim of the initiative is to help to improve the equipment and facilities in schools so children can be inspired and to help to relieve school budgets from spending on items which can be sourced from donations.

A morning stroll from the studio was also enjoyed.

THe social group meets every THursday evening and every other Saturday at the studio. Some 10-15 members, aged from their mid-20s to mid-70s, go along.

THey enjoy activities to learn and develop skills such as crafts and first aid. Karaoke sessions on THursdays provide some fun.

Occasional guest speakers on Saturday give an insight into their jobs.

Popular day sees Sea Cadets take centre stage in tribute to military SEA CADETS in Bognor Regis had their new colours dedicated at the town's annual celebration of the armed forces.

THe formal introduction of the standard for the members of the TS Sir Alec Rose reinforces their identity as a unit.

THe Rev Dr Alison Green, who led the service for Armed Forces Day, said: "THere is always something thrilling and spine chilling about the new colours being marched through the ranks.

"THat's why the BBC broadcasts Trooping the Colour every year because millions of people watch. Both Bognor Regis on a sunny Saturday and the pomp and circumstance of Horseguards Parade take us back to the beginning of this ceremony.

"It is a beginning which lay in the confusion of battle on land, at sea or in the air. It is a time when you really need to know who your friends are.

"Today's world can be confusing and it is good to know who will support you through every danger and loss. THis shows the value of friendship as a bedrock of community. Parading your new colours is an expression of that community, reminding ourselves of what we value and what is important."

THe new colours were carried by Cadet First Class Frankie Bannister, 14, at the event's opening drumhead service. He said: "I am the first person to parade them.

"It's not really sunk in yet that this does not happen very often. I've only been in the cadets for a year and I feel privileged.

"THe new colours are important because they are a symbol of who we are."

Cadet First Class Bannister joined TS Sir Alec Rose about 18 months ago when his family moved from Selsey as a way of getting to know others of the same age.

Last Saturday's event in front of the pier was also significant for the unit's commanding officer. Lieutenant Gary Edgington was presented with his commissioning scroll from the Queen by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Davina Irwin-Clarke, on the monarch's behalf.

His counterpart in the Littlehampton unit, Brian Osborne, received his scroll for the rank of Lieutenant from Denise Patterson, a Deputy Lord Lieutenant for West Sussex.

Lt Edgington said: "It's a great honour.

It's recognition of the work we do for the community bringing through these young people. "It's important to give them something to aspire to.

"We offer a lot of activities to them. It's not about joining the Royal Navy. It's about equipping these young individuals for life."

THe unit has 24 cadets and seven younger members aged from 10 to 18.

TH presentations were held after the rededication by Dr Green of the promenade memorial to the wartime role of the town's pier as HMS St Barbara. It served as a Royal Navy anti-aircraft firing range and gunnery training school between September, 1943, and January, 1945.

THe present-day armed forces were represented by Corporal Ben Murphy and his colleagues from the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment.

THey manned a stall with equipment

such as an SA80 rifle, an underslung grenade launched and their latest kit.

"It's good to go out and see the local people. THis is our local area where we recruit from and it's ideal for us to meet those who live in it," he said.

THeir display impressed Bognor Regis boy Marley Faulkner, ten. His mum, Vikkie Faithful, said: "He likes guns and anything to do with the military. He wants to go into the Sea Cadets, because his sister is in them, and then into the Army."

Ryan Bowles, 28, of Felpham, was another visitor keen to see the equipment.

He said: "I liked looking at the guns and the equipment.

"I'm interested in the Army and I'm a bit of a nerd. My grand-dad was a Commando who served on D-Day and in Burma."

Other displays included the SAS 1991 Gulf War Living History Group and the Poppy Appeal. Entertainment came from THe Silhouettes and the town's RAFA Choir among others. Five Chelsea Pensioners were special guests for the day.

One of the organisers, Jan Malpas, said: "THis is one of the best attended days we've had.

People were ten deep in front of the pier at one time.

"We've probably had 2,000 people supporting us and the military have really enjoyed themselves. THe entertainment has also been fantastic and appreciated by the crowd."

THis was the town's tenth Armed Forces Day.

` Station plans IMPROVED cycle security could be put in place at Bognor Regis railway station.

THe improvement has been put forward by the West Sussex Rail Users Association.

THe passengers' group has made the suggestion about how Govia THameslink Railway should spend some of its £15m passenger benefit fund.

Trevor Tupper, the group's secretary, said in its latest newsletter: "We are also suggesting that the cycle racks at Bognor station are moved on to Platform 4 there to improve security."

Other projects the group would like to see benefit are a water bottle filler at Bognor Regis and Chichester and at least one extra ticket vending machine in Bognor Regis.

Barnham would also benefit from a platform shelter with comfortable seats similar to the wood and metal version with armrests at Bognor Regis.

Stations like Bognor Regis, Chichester and Barnham have been allocated £30,000 each from the fund. It is the fine imposed on GTR by the government in response to its 2018 summer timetable chaos.

THe consultation ends on June 30.

Father Lawson's goodbye

WORSHIPPERS at an Aldwick church will be saying farewell to its longest-serving vicar.

Father Lawson Nagel will retire next month after 28 years in charge of St Richard's Church.

THe landmark building in Gossamer Lane was consecrated in 1934 and only the original vicar, the Rev Charles Mosse, comes close to Father Lawson's length of time there.

Fr Lawson said: "THis is a good place to be, a good place to minister and a good place to bring up children.

"THe people here make it a good place.

Of course, there are problems as there are anywhere else and they need pastoral care but they are a welcoming congregation.

"Over the years, we've had a mix of ages and this is a practical building for worship. THere's plenty of room here and it has a musical tradition with choirs for adults and children.

"We also have the Mosse Memorial Hall, which is very well used. We have a playgroup there every weekday morning.

"I've had to get my mind around the fact I must retire. I love the good people of Aldwick but I understand that, reaching the age of 70, it's time to make way for someone younger."

Fr Lawson reaches his milestone age just after his final service at St Richard's at 8am and 10.30am on July 21.

Fr Lawson was born in Los Angeles and brought up in California before he studied English literature and history at university in Michigan.

He moved to London and worked in publishing for a number of years.

But the sense he was destined for a life in the Church of England, which began when he was at university, led him to help

in churches around the capital.

"I had a bet with myself," he said, "that if one more person asked me if I had thought of becoming a vicar I would do it and someone did.

He worked at Holy Trinity Church in Horsham before he followed his predecessor by moving to St Richard's in 1991 with his wife, Mary.

"It is by the sea, there are good schools for the children and it's close to Chichester, which we love," he said.

Fr Lawson has no firm plans for his life in retirement but he expected to still play a role in the CoE. He said: "I've resisted signing up to too many things to start with but I expect I will be helping out in churches in some way."

THat could be in inter-regnums in between permanent vicars or as a locum in Europe. THis has seen Fr Lawson officiate in CoE churches around Europe in cities such as Milan, Genoa and Florence and further afield in Tangier in Morroco.

Numbers have declined at St Richard's in his lengthy time there - to 20 at the early morning service and 60 in mid-morning as they have at other churches.

But Fr Lawson: "THroughout time, the church has gone up and down in terms of influence and popularity but it still survives because we have an eternal message of God's love for us through Jesus Christ.

Carnival joy - at last!

SAINT GEORGE came to the rescue of Bognor Regis Carnival.

THe patron saint of England lived up to his reputation with the winning float in the re-arranged community parade.

His mail chain costume with his distinctive red cross was one of a dozen on the best display in Sunday's rearranged procession.

Heraldic shields surrounded the float. A castle and a set of stocks also added to the historic scene. It was also judged the most colourful entry.

THe effort put into the display by the Chestnuts Day Centre, based on the Medieval Mayhem theme, justified the decision of organisers to hastily stage the event after strong winds caused its original date to scrapped.

Carole Hillier, who was St George, said: “THis is the second year in a row we have won the best senior float prize and I hope we will be back next year.

“It's been worth taking part today.

We had everything ready for the original parade and we just had to put it to one side.

"It's been so much fun and we are also promoting dementia – we are a dementia day centre – and that is so important.”

She thanked all those who had helped during two months to create the display.

THe Chestnuts' float was one of three among the ten entries which travelled from the eastern end of THe Esplanade to West Park.

THe pavements were lined with spectators on a day when the 10mph south-east wind and cloudy sky contrasted with the 40mph gales and sunny conditions of the original date of June 8. It was the fifth carnival to be held by the current organisers.

Sarah Boote-Cook, who chairs the

Bognor Regis Carnival Association, said: “It was a good event. It was smaller than usual but Bognor Regis still turned out to support us.

“It was definitely worth putting the parade on and the extra effort involved.

When we cancelled the carnival, everyone said they were disappointed.

“We've put it back on and they have supported us. It's more than we could have wished for.”

THe parade was led by the TS Sturdy band of the Nautical Training Corps and a mixture of walking and lorry entries followed.

Significant concerns are found in the county's fire and rescue service ACCUSATIONS of bullying due to gender or race were listed alongside ‘significant concerns’ about public protection in a highly critical report of fire services in West Sussex.

Overall, West Sussex Fire & Rescue was rated ‘requires improvement’, but two areas – ‘protecting the public through fire regulation’ and ‘ensuring fairness and promoting diversity’ – were found to be ‘inadequate’.

While exploring the latter, inspectors found that work to address bullying within the service had not yet started, despite concerns being raised in a staff survey in 2017.

THey also reported that, during the inspection, they had met staff ‘who told us they had been bullied because of their gender or race’.

When it came to firefighting and keeping people safe, the inspectors provided a list of areas which required improvement – all of which appeared to be bread and butter fire service skills.

THey were: understanding the risk of fire and other emergencies; preventing fires and other risks; responding to fires and other emergencies; and responding to national risks.

THe report pointed out that, when it came to fires and emergencies, West Sussex had not met its response standards since 2014/15.

It added: “In its response to fires and emergencies, the service isn’t making the best use of resources. Its fire engine availability is low and it is struggling to recruit and retain sufficient on-call firefighters.

“It hasn’t produced a clear plan for aligning its procedures to national guidance, its management of information after an incident is often poor and it has

had little success in reducing the high number of false alarms it receives.”

Figures in the report showed that, in the 12 months up to September 30, 2018, more than half of the 9,345 incidents attended – 51 per cent – turned out to be false alarms. THat’s around 4,766 calls.

Almost 2,000 calls were to fires and around 2,600 were to non-fire incidents.

At the end of March, 2009, West Sussex had 46 fire engines. THis was reduced to 35 by 2018.

THe inspection report and improvement plan will be subject to scrutiny at a special meeting of the environment, communities and fire select committee, at County Hall, Chichester, on July 10.

Dr James Walsh, leader of the opposition and the Liberal Democrat group, said the report indicated ‘a total failure of leadership’.

He added: “Once again, it is time that she (Cllr Louise Goldsmith) seriously considers her position, and takes the decision to step down before she is dumped by her own party.”

Responding to the report, Neil Stocker, chief fire officer (acting) said: “We acknowledge the findings and recommendations in the report and thank the inspectors for carrying out a detailed review of our service, the first of its kind.

“I want to reassure the public that the safety of our residents remains the top priority for our fire and rescue service and we are determined to address the concerns raised in the report.

“THe report identifies our areas for improvement but also a number of our strengths. Although there is always room for further improvement, last year we attended 9,292 incidents - up from the previous year. We attended 88 per cent

“When the inspection team revisited our service in February, they noted that we had taken on board their comments and have recognised the improvements we are making. THey welcomed our detailed action plan which we will continue deliver as a priority.”

THe Fire Brigades Union has said it was ‘not surprised’ that West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service had been on the receiving end of a highly critical inspection report.

Accusing the county council of the ‘systematic decimation’ of the service, the union called for millions of pounds of budget cuts to be reversed.

County council Labour group leader Michael Jones, responding to the report's findings, said: "THe report is yet another example of the West Sussex Tories failing

Fighting for unit in city's hospital MPS IN West Sussex can expect to receive letters from frustrated councillors about the ongoing fight to place a radiotherapy unit at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.

THe county is the only one in England not to have the equipment, known as Linacs, within its boundary, meaning patients face long and painful journeys to Brighton, Guildford and London for treatment.

At a recent meeting of the health and adult social care select committee (HASC), members pointed out that the issue had been dragging on for more than 12 years and was now ‘urgent’.

Chairman Bryan Turner received a letter from Marianne Griffiths, chief executive of both the Western Sussex Hospitals and the Brighton and Sussex University hospitals trusts, sharing support for the St Richard’s option.

Dame Marianne added they would be reviewing provision of cancer services across Chichester and Worthing ‘to determine whether there is a better configuration for cancer services across the whole trust’.

It was hoped the review would lead to a business case being submitted to NHS England for funding for St Richard’s.

THere was frustration from a number of committee members, though.

Dr James Walsh (Lib Dem, Littlehampton East) said: “THe letter doesn’t really move us forward. It

restates the position we were in 18 months or two years ago.

“We’ve all known this, and the problem hasn’t been so much where the service is provided, it’s about how patients get to those services.

“What we need to make sure is we are focussed on the patients and making sure they don’t have to go from A to B to C.” Oliver Phillips, the trust’s planning and strategy director, said he shared members’ frustration, adding: “We are very, very keen as a trust to have a radiotherapy unit at St Richard’s Hospital.

“A review undertaken by the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance clearly demonstrated that across the whole of Sussex that was the area that was most suffering.

“It’s not so much actually the people that live within a mile of here, it’s Littlehampton patients or Pulborough patients – that’s where the real difficulty is in travel.

“We’ve knocked on the door of NHS England a number of times on this. What we’re very keen to do now is put forward a proposal for our entire cancer services that we hope that they can get behind.

“We will be discussing that with patients and public.”

Mr Phillips estimated that the review should be completed by early 2020.

` Summer campaign MOTORISTS have been warned the annual summer crackdown by Sussex Police and Surrey Police on drink and drug-driving has begun.

THe law-enforcement began on Monday and will last until July 7.

Anyone caught and convicted during this period will be identified on the Sussex Police news website and social media pages.

THe campaign aims to keep road users as safe as possible by educating motorists of the danger of mixing drink, drugs and driving.

Chief Inspector Michael Hodder, of the Sussex Police and Surrey Police roads policing unit, said: "It goes without saying that drink and drug-driving destroys lives, and it's something that can so easily be detected. People have a clear decision to make.

"By choosing to drive under the influence of drink or drugs, you are choosing to take a huge risk. Alcohol and substances significantly impair your ability to carry out even the simplest of tasks, and you should never get behind the wheel of a car in those circumstances."

THe campaign also seeks to spread the message the influence of drink and drugs can last for hours.

"You can also be over the limit the morning after, " said Ch Insp Hodder.

"A common misconception is that a few hours' sleep, a coffee and some breakfast will do the trick. But it can take several hours for alcohol to leave your system and even longer for drugs."

THe results of drink or drugdriving can include at least a 12-month ban, an unlimited fine and dearer car insurance. Police officers respond to reports of illegal driving all year.

Festival is a success MORE than 2,000 people had fun at the biggest CoreFest in Walberton yet.

THe bumper turnout to the weekendlong event delighted organisers at Hft Sussex.

CoreFest was held at their Sussex Orchards site in Eastergate Lane and boasted three stages of music and entertainment, two licensed bars, accessible camping facilities and a variety of games and activities.

THose who went along have been unanimous in their positive feedback about the festival. It is estimated to have raised £4,000-plus.

Sarah Shallis, Hft's operations manager, said: "CoreFest gets bigger and better each year and we were delighted with this year's turn-out.

"It's always been our ambition to create a fully inclusive festival that's a highlight of the year for the whole community.

"So it was great to see so many people come together to spend some time with family and friends while enjoying the brilliant music and entertainment on offer. All funds raised at the festival are set to go towards supporting local people with learning disabilities to live the best life possible."

Last weekend's CoreFest was the fourth to be held. Its musical line-up included top tribute acts Abba Magic, THe Who: Quadrophonia, and Chaz and Dave. Local favourites such as Iron Tyger, Murdoch's Crazy Eyes and Indya also took to the stages.

Interactive storytelling, a silent disco

and a circus tent with performances and workshop also provided plenty to enjoy.

Hft supports more than 70 people from the site with a range of services.

Council court win about noisy gate A SENIOR councillor has said a court case about a Bognor Regis property showed Arun District Council's determination to back its legal duty.

THe council has been awarded £20,000 costs by Brighton magistrates after it took the management company of the Compass Point flats to court over a noisy gate.

THe company was also fined £2,500 for being guilty of a breach of an abatement notice served by council and handed a victim surcharge of £170.

Cllr Matt Stanley, the council's member for technical services, said: "THis case shows that the council is determined and equipped to ensure that compliance with the abatement notices it serves is achieved.

"THe fine and costs incurred by the defendant shows that it is not only important to comply with abatement notices issued by the council's environmental health service but that it is also the most cost effective approach."

In August, 2017, the council received a complaint about a noisy electronic gate and the disturbance it caused to occupants of a flat at Compass Point, on the corner of THe Esplanade and Gloucester Road, as the gate transmits noise into the flat.

After investigation, the council determined this was a statutory nuisance. Talks with the management company led to work on the gate but some noise still remained and specialist acoustic advice was never sought.

Chance to help protect environment of town A TREE-MENDOUS chance has arisen to help to keep Bognor Regis looking green.

THe town's in Bloom working group is looking to appoint a voluntary tree warden to play an active role in conserving trees in the community.

A spokeswoman said: "THe types of activities included in the role could be: *Surveying trees and gathering information about them *Liaising with the local community *Protecting trees and woods *Organising activities, such as planting

and caring for new trees "In 2017, Bognor Regis in Bloom signed the Tree Charter, pledging to look after and protect our local trees where possible. A tree warden would help the working group fulfil this promise."

Event, Flowers at Boxgrove.

Boxgrove Priory will be the idyllic setting for a three-day festival of flowers on June 28, 29 and 30. More than 25 colourful displays, inspired by the names of choirs in the Anglican choral tradition and provided by flower arrangers from around the area, will be set against the historic background of the priory's architecture and tranquil atmosphere. A floralthemed concert by the priory’s own choir, featuring both secular and lighter pieces at 7.30 on June 29. Plants will be for sale throughout. Entry to the festival is £5 and £10 to the concert. Proceeds will go to the priory's restoration.

Spoken art, Dismantle for Flow.

THis performance by artist and poet Philomena Harmsworth is a spoken and visual journey - a pause on her way round understanding the world - she has had to dismantle her thoughts to allow flow. Philomena’s performance will be of poetry, art, video and a book.

Proposed solar farm at Lidsey Farm Solafields is holding a second pre-application public exhibition regarding its proposal to build a solar farm of up to 10MW at Lidsey Farm, for those who were unable to attend the same exhibiton at Felpham in January 2019.

The proposal solar farm would be located on low-grade agriculture land approximately 1km east of Lidsey Road/ A29, with direct access from the A259 relief road.

Summer fun with less alcohol

Health authorities often say nowadays we don't drink enough, especially water, a problem which is worse in summer when our bodies lose more fluid because of hotter temperatures.

WE'RE recommended to drink a minimum of two litres or eight glasses of water a day to keep hydrated and healthy and, especially with the emphasis on reducing single-use plastic bottles of water, British tap water is totally fine as the best liquid to reduce your thirst.

However, beer and other alcoholic drinks, such as cool white wine, are extremely tempting as a refreshing way to have a break on a hot day but, unfortunately, there are some downsides to imbibing too much too quickly.

Alcohol, whether beer, wine or spirits, acts as a diuretic, meaning your kidneys work overtime to expel fluid from your body and, therefore, you're even more at risk of becoming dehydrated, which can have serious medical repercussions. THe answer in summer, as the rest of the year, is to know your safe drinking limits and stick to them.

Official advice is is to drink plenty of water or soft drinks in between any alcoholic drinks to try to prevent dehydration. Of course, you won't be drinking and driving but swimming, walking near or being on water is also a no-no because your

But don't despair that all the fun has evaporated with the reduction in alcohol, today it's much more sociallyacceptable to have fruit juice, smoothies and mocktails. Recipe for kids Ingredients 

3 tbsp pomegranate seeds big bunch mint 2 limes, quartered, plus slices to garnish 1 litre pomegranate juice 500ml lemonade

Method 1. A day ahead, divide the pomegranate seeds between the holes in an ice cube tray, top up with water and freeze.

2. Reserve half the mint for serving, and tear the rest into a large jug with the lime quarters. Using a rolling pin, bash the mint and lime to release the flavours.

Add the pomegranate juice and lemonade. Put ice cubes in each glass, then strain over the pomegranate mix through a small sieve. Garnish with lime slices and more mint.

3. Alternatively, omit pomegranate seeds and juice and use cranberry juice instead of pomegranate.

THE medieval retreat with its charming passageways winding through has cosy, warm lounges and tranquil corners for intimate and private gatherings before dining.

My companion, Taryn, and I opted to sit outside in the courtyard on a rather warm and muggy day and enjoyed a glass of local sparkling wine each.

We had a chance to browse both the lunch menu, offering three courses for £28 or two courses for £25 and the Climping menu which was three courses for £38 or two courses for £32.

Taryn decided to choose the lobster soup for her starter with aioli, gruyere cheese and croutes while I opted for the fresh pasta noodles with morel mushroom cream sauce, parmesan and truffle oil. Both starters were rich in flavours and just the right size for a lunch time appetiser.

THe three restaurants in the Historic Sussex Hotels group; Bailiffscourt, THe Spread Eagle (Midhurst) and Ockendnen Manor (Cuckfield), pride themselves by sourcing local ingredients to taste the flavours of Sussex. THe restaurants claim to have a great relationship with local suppliers, some of whom they have been working with for many years who know exactly what they want and therefore deliver excellent produce to meet the high standards.

It was a difficult choice for a main course, with options including grilled mackerel with fennel salad, coq au vin with mustard mash, and poached cod with a brioche, parmesan and hazelnut crust and roasted, garlic potatoes.

Taryn plumped for the roasted cornfed chicken supreme with creamed potato, morel mushroom cream sauce, spring greens and port jus. My companion noted how succulent the chicken was and matched perfectly to the potato and mushroom sauce.

I decided to have the vegetarian option and picked the pea and parmesan risotto with parmesan cracker, pea shoots and truffle oil.

THe flavoursome dish was creamy but light and I happily chose a homemade roll, which was baked to perfection to go with it.

Although completely full and ready for an afternoon nap, the delicious desserts were just too tempting. I struggled to decide between English rhubarb and dark chocolate tart or Eton Mess. In the end, the sound of meringue, vanilla cream and macerated English strawberries was just enticing and I was not disappointed. A light, fluffy cream which melted on my tongue with the sweet taste of vanilla worked perfectly with sweet, crispy, melt in your mouth meringue pieces and fresh strawberries.

Taryn decided to choose the coffee creme brulee with praline and pistachio ice cream which she described as the best creme brulee she has ever tasted. A light, crisp shell that shattered satisfyingly under her spoon and a rich, smooth layer of custard beneath with just a whisper of coffee. THe dessert was presented in a rather sweet coffee cup decorated with a charming bird.

Our visit was not complete without spotting one of the resident peacocks wandering around the gravel car park as we left.

Bailiffscourt is a dreamy retreat for those looking to use the spa, lunch or simply escape and enjoy nature. Set in picturesque countryside, it's easy to spend time in the luxurious atmosphere and unwind and enjoy.

Motivated to achieve mobility More than 86,000 people require hip replacements each year, making it one of the UK’s most common surgeries.

We spoke to consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, Mr Michael Moss, to find out if there is an optimal time to get a hip replacement and why motivation is vital to the recovery process.

Everyone is different, but typically we see people presenting with pain deep in their groin, buttock or thigh, which can variably be described as dull, sharp, burning or simply discomfort. Some may experience little pain, and instead notice stiffness. THeir mobility may be reduced and they could start to struggle with certain daily activities, such as getting out of a chair or bending to tie their shoe laces, when these tasks never used to cause them any problems.

Typically, symptoms can develop anywhere from six months to one year, although it’s never one size fits all, and it’s not uncommon for people to experience symptoms across a shorter or longer time frame.

As a surgeon, part of my role is to enable my patient to fully understand the options available to them. Surgery is one route, but first and foremost, we always look to maintain the existing joint where possible. One of my patients has been coming to see me for 10 years as I’ve been able to preserve their joint without yet having to pursue surgery as an option.

For those that do require an operation, it’s important to understand that having a replacement joint is not the end of their mobility, but rather it’s the beginning of their restoration back to health.

Many of the patients I see have always enjoyed active lifestyles and are keen to get back to doing what they love as soon as possible. People are more physical than previous generations and it’s our job as

Hip replacements tend to be performed in older adults, but ages can vary greatly. THe youngest patient we’ve seen was a 17-yearold who required surgery due to childhood hip problems and the oldest to date was 101.

In terms of recovery, the positive news is that with desire, motivation and a tailored physiotherapy programme, most people will return to their normal activities within just a few months. I get great job satisfaction from seeing patients get their lives back, whether this be returning to top level sport or just walking their dog again.

Mr Michael Moss is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with 23 years’ worth of experience. He specialises in primary and revision hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, as well as arthroscopic knee surgery and ligament reconstruction.

Rekindling nostalgia of bygone days There’s a warm welcome at Oakmeres a friendly, attentive family-run farm shop, rekindling the nostalgia of bygone days in the heart of Rose Green.

Jez and Jack Stannard are now into their third year of trading and continue to see their business evolve into a thriving hub of the village community.

Oakmeres has three main lines of business: a greengrocers selling fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables; a pet shop stocking a variety of food and treats for the furry and feathered; and thirdly a forecourt, fully stocked with an array of garden plants, shrubs and hanging baskets.

Behind the scenes, orders large and small are regularly collated and made up, supplying numerous care homes, clubs, factories and residents with deliveries of fresh fruit and vegetables.

This personal service, which includes free delivery, is a major attraction, especially for people unable to visit the shop or carry heavy loads, although there is convenient parking on the road outside the shop.

Bespoke fruit and vegetable boxes, for domestic use and gifts, for example, can be delivered within a wide area, as well as garden compost and plants.

Oakmeres strives to source locally, with produce including eggs, honey, ground coffee, plants and flowers grown in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area plus local fruit and veg when possible.

A NEW walking and cycling initiative has begun in Bognor Regis.

Beat the Street started on Sunday and will continue until July 31 to challenge schools, community groups and workplaces to see how far they can travel in those six weeks.

Cllr Gill Yeates, Arun District Council's cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: "I'd encourage everyone to sign up and get involved with this fantastic initiative which encourages all members of our community to become more active."

A BOGNOR REGIS business hopes its new partnership has charity fundraising licked.

Pinks Parlour is donating 10p from every scoop sold at its new premises this summer to Dementia Support.

THe Pinks team at the Waterloo Square parlour are also becoming Dementia Friends and taking part in training that will make them more aware of customers who may have dementia.

THis will also make the parlour a dementia-friendly venue.

As part of the initiative, Pinks Parlour will also hold chatter tables for people living with dementia and their carers to provide a quiet space and advice about living with the condition.

Dementia Support's chief executive, Sally Tabbner, said the partnership between the Tangmere-based charity and Pinks Parlour was an exciting development.

"THis is a fantastic partnership," she said. "As a local charity, we are always keen to team up with local businesses and support our community.

"THanks to Pinks for this amazing opportunity. I'll be making sure I pop in a few times for an ice cream."

THe partnership continues the close work that Pinks Parlour owners Katy and Georgia Alston have been doing with Dementia Support in recent months.

Pinks is often seen at the charity's support centre - Sage House - supporting various events for people living with dementia and their carer. Most recently, this involved a visit by Rosey, the tricycle for Sage House's first birthday.

A Yarn Bombing project previously announced by Pinks and Dementia Support, where the community was asked to knit more than 800 metres of bunting, is due to go ahead in September after a delay to fill streets with bursts of colour.

THe partnership has been launched just after Dementia Support announced its £1m wayfinder appeal launch.

THis aims to reach more families in the area living with dementia. Wayfinders are individuals who provide vital, personalised guidance for people living with dementia and their families to 'find their way' through their situation.

A FAMILY business in Bognor Regis has starred on the BBC. Turner's Pies was featured in Monday's edition of BBC One's Our Live series, called Life of Pies. THe programme followed the firm's success as class champion with its delicious steak and mature cheddar pie at this year's British Pie Awards.

Company boss Phil Turner and his team at the awards were followed by the cameras as they prepared for the annual event, along with 200 other bakers.

He said: "THis came on the back of our outstanding success last year when our steak and ale pie was voted supreme champion with judges giving it a score of 99/100, saying the perfect pastry parcel was a clear winner, beating 950 other pies.

"But the cameras following us, pictured below, added a fun element to the whole process and we had loads of laughs during filming."

THe thought of appearing on national TV had been 'super exciting', said Phil, who oversees the company's four shops in Hawthorn Road, Bognor Regis, Chichester, Rustington and Worthing.

Film-maker Anthony Bartram said it was a joy to help to reveal the history of the third-generation firm, founded in 1933, and tell the family story behind the business.

MAXIMUM funding of £5,000 has been pledged to a Bognor Regis radio station.

County council members of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee agreed the support for Radio Respect community interest company.

THe money will go towards the £13,804 that Radio Respect is seeking to buy and update equipment for its Argyle Road studio and to apply for a community licence instead of relying on internet broadcasting. It will be paid if the target is met.

Radio Respect is dedicated to mental health matters and also has a vinyl record shop. It has expanded recently to take on clients from the Jobcentreplus in Bognor Regis as volunteers.

County councillor Francis Oppler (LD, Bognor Regis E) said: "Radio Respect do an amazing job. THe most important thing for them is to get an FM licence to enable them to broadcast to a far wider group of people and not rely on the internet. THat's the key thing."

Tory Cllr David Edwards, the county councillor for Bersted, said: "Radio Respect is something of which we should be immensely proud." It was jointly founded six years ago by Chris Collins, pictured below.

Town's papers provide a window on the past Articles from 20 years ago show how much has changed - and stayed the same WE will one day have the situation where we will no longer be able to view newspapers of the past as more and more information moves online So, this week I thought I would take a look at a decade.

At the start of the decade in 1990 I have copies of the Promoter newspaper, which was of a smaller size that the papers today. It was produced in Dorset Road and contained a high number of advertisements for jobs, events and trades around the town.

Job advertisements can be interesting. In November, 1990, we were ‘invited to take a look inside Lec,’ when they had vacancies for ‘Mature Accounts Clerks and Book-keepers'.

No computer experience necessary, just a head for figures. Full-time operators were offered a position for 39 hours per week, with a wage of £139. Also available was 10 hours overtime, giving a wage of £182.

In relation to the salary it was possible to buy 1988 Skoda for £1,650, or a 1975 Mercedes for £1,975. Also ,in 1990, there was a small Bognor Regis Magazine, which had advertisements for THe Forsythe Saga in West Street and Bellapais in Little High Street, both long since gone.

Ladies fashions were promoted both at Bobby’s of Bognor and Coplestone House in Sudley Road. Arun Travel were also

advertising trips to Dunkirk for the 50th anniversary veterans’ weekend THen, for 1991, I have a copy of THe Bognor Regis Post - the original Post. THere are several pages of television programmes with Saturday night covered by the Bruce Forsyth Generation Game, Challenge Anneka and Birds of a Feather. THere are listings for only four channels.

Channel 4 was showing on Saturday evening the omnibus edition of Brookside. Do you remember these programmes?

Looking through the advertisements, we find Sargeant Carpets, Wayne Window and Woods Coaches, who are still with us. No Picturedrome then but it was named Cannon, with two screens, both non-smoking.

THe front page headline news was ‘A Vision of the future,’ following a conference in the town to discuss the future. THe main result was that there should be more co-operation between organisations and councils.

Also in 1991 I have a copy of the first issue of THe Bognor Regis Trader, issued by the Bognor Regis District Chamber of Trade. Here we find a welcome to a new store in the town, that of Littlewoods, which replaced Marks and Spencer. Littlewoods now sadly only service their customers online.

and the main event was, of course, on August 13, when the IRA bomb exploded in London Road, which was to be the last IRA bomb on the mainland.

Scores of shop windows were devastated, many were up and running straight after in defiance of the act. Luckily, no one was killed or seriously injured. During this year there were major discussions in the town about Butlin’s wishing to have a funfair on the seafront.

I well remember attending a ratepayers' meeting to discuss the matter. However, the promised information and detail was not forthcoming from those hosting the meeting.

According to the press it was mostly ‘old people’ at the meeting. Enough said.

THe Observer newspapers often recalled stories from the past and in a 1998 edition they did just this, when announcing that the paper would from then on be a paid-for paper.

THey had some interesting items including memories of the annual Clown Conventions which sadly finished in 1995. (THey have appeared a few times since then.)

In its heyday, there were hundreds of clowns coming into the town, not only from Britain but from American and Europe. One year, a French television company arrived and filmed half a dozen of our clowns for an hour-long television programme in France, to show the importance of the event.

During this year, a regeneration group placed sales kiosks in London Road, all selling similar items to the shops they stood in front of to prompt controversy.

THere was also a large discussion on the St Michael and All Angels church in

West Meads as it was deemed not to be Ecclesiastical enough.

In 1998, storms brought misery to many parts of our town with very high tides, coupled with high winds.

It was thought at that time that the costs would be in the region of £155,000 with damage at both Felpham, Elmer and Pagham because of shingle loss.

It was one of the wettest Decembers that year with rainfall almost 75mm above the annual average.

In 1998, Butlin's closed for a period to build their new Pavilion, known now as THe Skyline, which is now so much part of our landscape, as well as replacing chalets.

Also, in this year, Butlin's Redcoats were leaving their Ocean Hotel in Brighton for the last time which was eventually to become prestigious accommodation. It was to be many years before a hotel of that name was to open here in Butlins.

Later in the decade, in 1999, it is interesting to read the headline of 'We can’t cope say residents'.

THis was an objection to a proposal for 300 homes around Lincoln Avenue and the Aldwick and Pagham Scout Hut off Sefter Road THe reason for the objection was totally the same as any of today’s objections. So not much has changed over time, the objections have remained, with the only increase in the number of houses being built.

Finally, in 1999, there was a new newspaper on the scene - THe Reporter. It reported on very local events and activities, and was run in partnership with local businesses during its lifespan of several months.

THe club, who play at Boxgrove Village Hall, have become the first team ever to win all of those competitions since the formation of the Sussex league.

THe club also travelled to Hampshire and Dorset, taking their winning ways with them.

Eight members of this small club also played in THe County Premier Team, losing the Plate competition on the last end of the last two games.

THey now look forward to continuing their success with the County in the 2019/20 season.

Infinity have also had national representation with Steve Chris and Richard Jeffrey representing Sussex at the national championships where they suffered defeat in the semi final.

In the quartets, Chris Page, Charlotte Rollings, together with Chris and Richard Jeffery, also reached the final four before tasting defeat.

Catherine takes Points Week prize SAILS aplenty were unfurled on Chichester Harbour as Itchenor Sailing Club hosted its annual Points Week.

THe three classes based at the club XOD, Sunbeam and Swallow all had races each day in what is a festival of classic keelboat racing.

Start times were adjusted to ensure that the race team, led by Roger Wickens, could set courses for the fleets to take full advantage of high tides in the harbour. Sixty-four classic boats took part as the Itchenor fleet was joined by four visiting boats from Cowes, Lymington, Yarmouth and Parkstone.

Monday provided perfect weather and last year’s winner, Las, helmed by John Tremlett, made a fast start to take first place and Roger Yeoman, steering Xcitation, into second place.

However, slightly trickier conditions on Tuesday gave a new winner – Catherine with Colin McKinnon on the stick – and Liz and Phil Chowiencyk’s Seamist a surprise second.

All change again on Wednesday when light winds proved even more challenging. Visiting sailor Michael O’Donnell brought Lightwood home to take the bullet ahead of local maestro Alastair Shaw in Phoenix.

THursday and Friday saw the return of those champagne conditions all racers enjoy.

Yeoman and Moss’s Xcitation made amends for the black flag disqualification they suffered the day before with their only first place of the week. Phoenix was again second.

So with six boats in contention for the week’s top prize, the Benson Platter, a close battle ensued. Catherine was the early leader but had dropped back to third under pressure from a number of boats including Xcitation and Madeline, in the hands of visitor Penny Fulford. In the end, Catherine prevailed to take the race and week.

THe Sunbeam class also enjoyed close competition. Peter Taylor and Robin Richardson in Betty showed early in the week with class captain Nick Leach in close pursuit.

However, it was Polly’s consistency that was key as she trumphed with Betty in second.

Tim Hill’s Query took third place overall on count back from Penny.

In the Swallow class, the series became a tussle between Skua and Osprey swapping first places during the series. Both had three firsts but it was Skua’s two seconds that proved the difference against Osprey’s.

MCC's wait for win continues MIDDLETON will be looking to end a five match run without a win when they welcome Cuckfield to Sea Lane tomorrow (11.30am).

After starting the Sussex Premier Division with three wins, Sean Heather's side have fallen off the pace, losing three with no result in the other two.

Despite this month-long wait for a victory, Middleton remain fourth in the ten team division, with the halfway point of the season nearing.

Heather will hope his side can rediscover their winning form again this weekend when fifth-place Cuckfield head to the Sussex coast.

With three points separating the two sides, victory for either will push them upwards.

Middleton will be looking for their overseas player, Mahesh Rawat, to continue his fine form and fire them to victory.

THe Indian wicket keeperbatsman fired an unbeaten 151 in last weekend's draw at titlechasing Roffey.

After winning the toss, Heather

elected to bat and take advantage of the rule which allowed them to bat for more than half of the 110 overs on offer.

THey got off to a poor start as opener Jack Dawling (5) and Mason Robinson (1) were both back in the shed with 20 scored.

When Harry Hovey (12) fell with the score doubled, Middleton needed to rebuild. Rawat and skipper Heather did just that, putting on 55 before the captain was bowled for 34.

THe Indian just kept on firing though, stepping up his scoring to smash 18 fours and five sixes in a tally of 151* in Middleton's score of 262-8.

In reply, the visitors made an excellent start taking the scalp of Roffey's Australian opener, Ben Manenti, with no score on the board.

THey managed to rally, reaching 212-5 and looking well-placed to get the win.

But Middleton's bowlers hit back, taking four wickets for four runs to put them in with a chance of victory before the overs ran out.

TABLE-TOPPING Bognor can take a big step towards promotion to the Sussex Premier Division when they welcome second-place St James's Montefiore to the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side sit top of Division Two after crushing local rivals Chichester Priory Park last weekend by 122 runs.

Tomorrow's match is set to be a much tougher test as a side who are just three points behind them in the standings head to Hawthorn Road.

Bognor will be hoping for a repeat performance from their skipper, who led from the front and fired a century in the match against Priory Park.

Batting first, Maskell put on 144 for the first wicket with Mikey Harris (37) before eventually being dismissed for 102.

With other contributions from Joe Ashmore (21) and Roy Kaia (41), Bognor eventually declared with 242 for 4. Mike Smith was the pick of the Chi bowlers, taking 1-28 off eight overs.

In reply, Bognor made a quick start taking two wickets to reduce Priory to 15-2. Chi rebuilt though through Matthew Bennison

(31) and Abhi Raut (41)put on 60 for the third wicket.

Kaia (2-40) then had the former caught behind with 75 on the board, a dismissal which triggered a collapse in the Chi ranks.

It was left to Bognor opening bowler Josh Sargeant to do the damage, as he returned to run through the tail and end with figures of 5-24 as Priory were all out for 120.

THat defeat leaves Chi third bottom, just outside the dropzone, with pressure now building ahead of a trip to Haywards Heath tomorrow (12.30pm).

In Division THree West, third-place Pagham will look to keep up their title hopes when they head to fourth-place Worthing tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side, who are just three points off top spot, demolished Findon last time out, eventually winning by 189 runs.

THe star of the show was Nick Smith, who smashed 149 from 105 balls after coming in at number three.

His contribution helped Pagham to a score of 275-9, a score which Findon never got close to chasing down as they were bowled out for 86. Rico Webb took a remarkable 8-33.

Pearce delight as Read signs

Muitt to return with new deal BOGNOR'S promotion hopes have received a boost after top scorer Jimmy Muitt penned a deal to stay at Nyewood Lane.

THe former Brighton player, who bagged 26 goals in 40 matches last campaign, has turned down more lucrative offers from elsewhere to stay with the Rocks.

THe news is a real coup for the club, who are looking to improve on a disappointing 14th place finish in the Bostik Premier last term.

With Muitt set to link up with former Portsmouth youngster Dan Smith again up front, Bognor now have a strike force to be feared.

And manager Jack Pearce said he could barely wait to see the fan favourite return to the fold when the club assemble for pre-season in the coming days.

THe veteran manager said: "Jimmy signing is great news – a real boost for the club and the supporters and we're delighted that he has chosen to stay with us.

"It's no secret that he has had clubs keeping tabs on him with a view to trying to sign him, and that's largely down to how well he performed for us last season, especially in terms of the number of goals he was able to score."

"It's been said before - in fact, something similar was said when Doug [Tuck] signed on again that this club of ours is special and it is. To have a player with the talent that Jimmy Muitt has got to actually decide to stay with us and grow and develop tells you so much about Bognor and the way we run the club and also about Jimmy as a man."

Muitt's tally last term was all the more remarkable given he suffered an injury in February which made him miss the majority of the run-in.

His absence, combined with the departure of Smith to Cork City on loan coincided with the Rocks falling from the playoff places.

Pearce will hope lightning does not strike twice again next term.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes he has bagged a talent for the future after snapping up former Portsmouth youngster Freddie Read.

THe 18-year-old midfielder agreed terms at Nyewood Lane after being released from Fratton Park.

Read got a taste of life at Bostik Premier level last season when he made a handful of appearances on loan with the Rocks.

And it was that affinity, along with a desire to get first team experience of men's football, that led to him making the permanent move along the south coast.

Pearce, who will manage the team with Robbie Blake next season, is delighted with the signing, adding: “We have agreed terms with Freddie and we are delighted he is joining us.

"We saw glimpses of his capabilities last season and we hope to help him develop."

Checkatrade Trophy triumph last season with appearances against Arsenal under-21s and Southend.

THe addition of the youngster, who also played some loan games at Gosport Borough last term, means the Rocks squad is growing fast.

Another former Pompey player, Dan Smith, is teaming up with the Nyewood Lane outfit.

THe signing of the striker is on the back of the recent recruitment of ex-Rocks playmaker Stu Green from AFC Totton and confirmation that last season’s top scorer, Jimmy Muitt, is also set to stay.

Captain Harvey Whyte and defender Keaton Wood are others who have agreed new terms.

THey join Doug Tuck, James Crane and Ashton Leigh to have put pen to paper.

Pearce said: "THe players we have managed to bring in so far gives us great encouragement going in to the new season."

Paine in as Pagham manager PAGHAM FC have moved quickly to replace departing manager Tom Simmonds by appointing the experienced Bob Paine.

Chairman Tony Shea announced the news less than a week after the being told Simmonds would not be returning to the dugout at Nyetimber Lane for the coming season for personal reasons.

Paine will be joined at the club by Craig Stuart and Tom Henton, both of whom were with him in his previous role at East Preston.

His first task will be to assemble a squad which can meet the club's aim of challenging at the top end of the SCFL Premier while challenging for cup silverware.

It will be no easy task as the Lions will need to rebuild after a dramatic loss of form in the second half of the season saw them drop into the bottom half of the table.

Shea will no doubt want Paine to use his experience within the Worthing youth setup to develop a talented crop of youngsters who are coming through at the Lions.

After helping establish the under 21s side at Worthing, within two years he helped the side win the Ryman Under-21 South Division and reach the final of the Sussex Intermediate Cup.

After departing Woodside Road, Paine took charge of East Preston in the summer of 2016, guiding the club back into SCFL Premier at the first attempt following relegation to Division One. Under his guidance, the Lashmar outfit finished 14th in the SCFL Premier last

season, four points behind Pagham in the standings.

THe departing manager also introduced under-18 and under-23 teams during his three-year tenure. He left Lashmar this summer after being informed his "services were no longer required".

Hundreds finish the first ever Centurion Country 5 THE first annual Centurion Country Five has been hailed a big success as nearly 300 runners took to the South Downs for the Chichester Runners event.

Held in place of the Midsummer Five, there was a friendly feel to proceedings as runners from across the south took part in the five mile race from Lavant Memorial Hall.

First home was Harry Leleu, the Chichester Runners representative sealing a win on home turf in a time of 25 minutes 47.

He was followed closely

by Jacob O’Hara (City of Portsmouth) and James Baker (Chi) in 26:06 and 26:39 respectively.

Chi also took the women's crown too as Beth Garland crossed the line in 29:05, making her eighth overall.

Sara Willhoit (Shrewsbury AC) and Kari Mack (Bognor Tone Zone) were next home in 29:32 and 31:19 respectively.

It was a good evening for the Tone Zone competitors as more than 40 donned the blue and orange for the event.

First club runner home and ninth overall was Sean Power in a very impressive time of 29:31, which also secured second in the under 20 age category.

He was followed by Christo Oosthuizen, finishing a minute behind Power, who took the over 50s category.

THen came through Danny Mahoney who was second in his category finishing in 33:22, one second ahead of Duncan Stephenson-Gill who was 26

seconds ahead of Paul Jarvis.

Carolyn Stapley was fifth in her age category, finishing just ahead of Gary Smith in 34:58.

THere was a close fought battle between Sarah Zacal, Keith Hardwell and Glenn Penfold with Sarah edging ahead of both Hardwell and Penfold.

Martin Playford ran a very strong race from start to finish to finish in 39:14 ahead of Tony Holcombe, Peter Ramsdale and Neil Pacey.

Natalie Tribe, Marzena Sowinska and Lucy JanyeIsitt all finished under 45 minutes. Sarah Backer-Brown, Stephen Brown, Lea Hodgkins all finished just under the 50 minute mark.

THere was an equally good turnout last weekend for the David Lloyd Ultra Marathon, THere were three options for entrants -a 4 x 10 mile relay, 30 mile or 40 mile off-road event.

Six club runners completed the 30 mile course, including Anna Enes (5 hours 22 minutes), Andy Shill (6:14), Tony Holcombe (6:26), Cheryl Laing (7:18), Grace Natoli in (7:31) and Jude Bazeley (7:36).

Paul Coe was the only member from the club to run the 40 miles which had nearly 4,200 feet of elevation, finishing in 8 hours 25 minutes.

In the 4 x 10 mile team, the club finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall.

THe winners were THe Nifty Fifties,consisting of Christo Oosthuizen, Paul Jarvis, Trev Strowger and Duncan Stephenson-Gill finishing in 5 hours 18 minutes.
