THey agreed to defer a decision about inviting the Sir Richard Hotham Project team behind a multi-million-pound scheme to meet them.

THey said it made sense to delay the presentation until the position of the new Lib Dem-run Arun District Council had become clear.

Arun’s ruling cabinet members are due to discuss the future of the Pavilion Park scheme next Monday.

Newly-elected member Cllr Wayne Smith (LD, Hotham) had asked the town council at its meeting on Monday to agree to hear what the Sir Richard Hotham Project had to say about its £90m vision for the Hothamton site.

and the people in it. For a good few years, things have been happening in Bognor Regis and regeneration is one of them.

“I have spent some time looking at the Sir Richard Hotham Project in some detail. I believe, at the moment, it is the best opportunity for Bognor Regis.”

THe project had been amended since its early versions, he said, and consisted of more than the flats many people opposed it for.

An extraordinary meeting would enable the town council to hear a 20-minute presentation from those behind the project followed by a question and answer session.

“We can hear what they have got to say, who they have got on board, where they want to go and who they have got behind them,” he said.

INDEPENDENT businesses in Bognor Regis are being backed by its town centre improvement body.

THe town's business improvement district (BID) is celebrating this week's independents' day. THe BID's four your High Street campaign began yesterday and will run for four days to mark the date of July 4.

THe group is encouraging owners of small businesses to create offers around the number four, such as showcasing goods available for ÂŁ4 and promoting special offers such as four items for the price of three.

Bognor Regis BID chairman Paul Wells said: "Local independent businesses make up a huge part of Bognor Regis' unique high street.

"We're proud to support our independents, who have committed their hope, time, finances and energy to making their businesses work in Bognor Regis, particularly in difficult trading times.

"THe high street can only keep its character with the support of both the local community and the thousands of visitors who come to our beautiful seaside town year on year.

"Come and support local businesses where and when you can and help our town to continue to grow and thrive."

Independents' Day UK highlights the unique flavour that independent retailers and businesses bring to the country's town centres. It is based around the famous date of July 4, American Independence Day. THe not-for-profit campaign to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK all year round, but with an annual focus on July 4.

Independent businesses account for about 65 per cent of some 290,000 retail outlets in the UK and are at the heart of local communities throughout the country.

THe latest shop survey confirms two out of three - 66 per cent - of ground floor businesses operating in the Bognor Regis BID area are independently owned and operated.

A spokesman for the BID said: "In addition to social media and press coverage about the event itself, independent retailers will be given a chalkboard-style sign to promote their special offers or show how supporting their unique independent businesses has a direct impact on the local community.

"Brightly-coloured banners which highlight the range of Bognor Regis's fantastic independent retailers will be displayed on London Road until the end of July."

Hedgehog find leads to plea to consider them in gardens A ROSE GREEN resident has urged homeowners to be aware of the harm chemicals can cause to hedgehogs.

Cynthia Weeks found one of the creatures in a poor state in Rose Green Road recently. Despite her best efforts, it died soon afterwards.

She said: "It didn't seem to be injured or have any other obvious problems. It wasn't particularly thirsty or hungry, either.

"So, I can only think it must have picked up some poison."

Cynthia spoke to Brent Lodge animal rescue centre. Its experts said this could have been through slug

pellets, which the hedgehog could have absorbed after eating slugs killed by the pellets, or rat poison left in plastic trays under sheds or similar places.

"People don't necessarily realise that doing that could cause the death of a hedgehog," she said.

She found the hedgehog on a recent Sunday morning on a verge opposite THe Nurseries.

She added: "I just want to highlight the situation to people so they are aware of what can happen. People don't realise what the effect can be of putting the poison out."

THe late Martin Venables (1901-1990) has become the subject of the latest of ten blue plaques to be installed by the Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership Board, with Bognor Regis Town Council.

It has been placed on the promenade wall close to Bognor Regis Yacht Club.

Mr Venables discovered and named several prehistoric fossils on that stretch of shoreline with the Bognor Rocks.

THe plaque's unveiling was carried out by fellow geologist David Bone. He said: "Martin was the most influential geologist locally.

"In particular, he published two papers in 1929 and 1963 on the geology of this shoreline. THere are things here which have national relevance."

THe seabed west of the town's pier is a Site of Scientific Special Interest because of the importance of its geology.

"THe Bognor Rocks are a very visual component of that but they are only a small part," he said. "Martin discovered the clay exposed on the beach yielded fossils, in particular a beetle. THese fossils are from 50 million years ago."

Mr Venables was born in 1901 and his parents moved to Bognor from Sutton in Surrey when he was a year old.

He was self-taught and had been fascinated by the natural history of Sussex from a young age. His knowledge led to him being elected to the fellowship of the Geology Society in 1928.

With his wife, Alice May Portnall, he found many new species among the flora and fauna on the seabed.

Mr Bone said he was delighted with the

new plaque.

"I first met Martin around 1968 when I made my first expedition to the beach with him as part of a geology group he was involved in. It was absolutely phenomenal.

"I knew Martin through the old museum in Lyon Street. I volunteered to help there as a teenager because of my interest in geology.

"Martin guided me. I was very much his protege. He passed on his knowledge to me and I have expanded that knowledge.

"It was Martin that got me started. I really do owe an awful lot to him."

Town council projects officer Sheila Hodgson said: "It's important to recognise the people who have contributed to the town's heritage.

"We hope people will look at the plaque and want to find out more about Mr Venables."

High Court judge's verdict in Pagham homes case - see page 4

INITIAL talks to enable Bognor Regis’ residents to own the town's civic heart again will start next week.

Town councillors agreed unanimously to begin discussions about the future ownership of the town hall with Arun District Council.

THose talks will start on Tuesday with the first liaison meeting between the councils since May’s elections saw the Liberal Democrats take the prime positions on both authorities for the first time.

THe transfer of the town hall to the town – and contents such as its portrait of the town’s founder, Sir Richard Hotham - for a nominal £1 will be one of the main items on the agenda.

Hotham Park, the running of seafront concessions, the promenade and town centre car parks will also be included after a series of votes at Monday’s town council meeting.

Deputy town mayor Cllr Steve Goodheart said: “THis brings back what Bognor is all about. We are talking about reclaiming what our heritage is all about.”

He welcomed the prospect of the town council taking control of Hotham Park.

“THe opportunities in the park are phenomenal. We could make facilities in the park to make it a more enjoyable destination. THere are so many things Arun have not done.,” he said.

THe series of votes was prompted by a motion by Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Hatherleigh). He said: “THis is a good opportunity to open a dialogue with

the new administration at Arun.

“Many of the new party over there have been vocal about the transfer of this town hall back to the town.

“We have been a council for many years who have wanted to grow the services we do for this town. THis is a good opportunity for us to start.”

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) was quoted in the Post in May calling for the building’s return and said: “I very much support this matter. It has been a wish for many years.

“We are now in the 91st year of this building. A lot of improvements could be made if we owned it.

“We can make a go of it – and, yes, we would have to look carefully at costs.”

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said his party had supported the town hall’s return in its election manifesto in the Post in April.

“I welcome the principle of the town hall being returned. It is something I have previously wanted as well.”

Cllr Alison Sharples (L, Marine) said she was concerned the town council could over-stretch its finances.

“Could we afford to maintain the town hall? I’m not sure we could afford to keep it going as a town council,” she said.

Glenna Frost, the town council’s clerk, said the public’s views had to be heard on the matter before any final decision was taken.

“Before we do anything, we should be seeking public consultation on whether we should go forward with this. Let’s open the discussions and see where we go.”

` Cannabis raids CANNABIS worth more than £1m has been recently seized by police in Bognor Regis.

THe total street value of the class B drug from the results of just four warrants was put by Inspector Steve Turner at £1.2m.

Some 2,000 cannabis plants were confiscated in the raids, Insp Turner of Sussex Police’s Arun prevention team told Bognor Regis town councillors on Monday.

He said five people had also been freed from modern slavery as a result of the action by a single team of officers.

THe police had been told their disruptive action on the drugs trade was making it difficult for dealers to find a base in Bognor Regis.

THis was a good indication the work of the police, and their partners, was having an impact, he said. THe police were confident of achieving a fourth house closure order around the town soon to add to the three gained at the end of last year as a result of illegal activity.

` Owls visit club YOUNG people are invited to meet a parliament of owls at a Bognor Regis club this month.

THe birds will be the special guests of the 39 Youth Club from 4pm-6pm on July 16. THe club meets at the Find It Out centre in Church Path, off Glamis Street.

THe club attracts 15-20 young people aged 11-14 every week but the owls' visit is open to all ages.

Entry will be £1 for club members and £2 non-members.

Judge rejects Pagham's bid A HIGH Court judge yesterday turned down an attempt by Pagham councillors to quash planning approval for hundreds of homes.

Mrs Justice Andrews ruled Pagham Parish Council's judicial review was unjustified. She said Arun District Council was correct in granting outline planning permission for 400 homes on land south of Summer Lane.

She handed down her judgment yesterday morning after a hearing on June 25 in which both sides put their cases.

She said the parish council, which was represented by Ashley Rowe QC, had failed to prove its case that members of Arun's development control committee were misdirected about the impact of the housing on heritage assets in the area.

Cllr David Huntley, a member of Pagham and Arun councils, said: "I am very disappointed with this decision.

"THe parish council will continue to pursue at Pagham and district level how to get these strategic sites allocations of housing, like Summer Lane, reversed.

"In particular, we are fighting the plans for Hook Lane, Summer Lane, Sefter Road and Church Barton Farm.

"We don't want any of these houses to be built, really. THey will mean an increase in housing beyond what we wanted in our neighbourhood plan. We have 190 homes being built already.

"But it was worthwhile going to the High Court because our residents would expect us to fight this matter as far as we can. THe

judgment could have gone the other way."

Mr Rowe had told the High Court hearing members of the development control committee at their meeting last November 2018 had been given only a partial quotation of Historic England's advice about how the homes' presence would affect the appearance of the Grade I-listed St THomas a'Becket Church when they approved the outline plans for development.

He alleged the importance of the open farmland to the significance of the church tower was omitted from the report to the committee. But Mrs Justice Andrews, who had reserved her judgment at the hearing, said this was not the case.

Cllr Huntley said a host of reasons, as well as the heritage aspect, existed why the housing near Summer Lane should not go ahead, said Cllr Huntley.

"I have a particular problem with this scheme because it is right next to Pagham Harbour local nature reserve. THe pets from the people who live in those houses will cause problems there.

"It will also involve the loss of the best and most versatile agricultural land. THe sewage system will not be able to cope, either," he added.

THe developer of the housing, Hanbury (PM) Ltd, has to compile detailed plans for the housing, and receive approval for them, before it can begin work on the homes.

Arun has been contacted for a response to the decision by Mrs Justice Andrews.

Cyclists are best of British CHARITY cyclists from Bognor Regis could become the Pride of Britain.

THe joint founder of one of the charities being backed by the Pink Pub riders said he was considering putting them forward for the annual awards.

THe national gongs are presented each November in a glittering ceremony hosted by ITV. Dan Arnold, who helped to found All Call Signs last year as a peer to peer communications app for veterans and serving military personnel, said: “I think these guys are deserving of a Pride of Britain award. I hope if they are nominated that the people of Bognor Regis back them.”

THe charity was set up after the loss of former Bognor Regis soldier Danny Johnson last year.

Dan spoke at the presentation event where a £132,059.30 cheque was handed over to All Calls Signs and Last Night A DJ Saved My Life. THe celebration last Saturday at the Pink Pub, or THe Royal Oak, in North Bersted, was enjoyed by hundreds of supporters.

He said the event summed up the achievement of the 26 cyclists who rode to Pegasus Bridge in northern France for D-Day 75 last month.

“I can’t stress enough how amazing the people of Bognor Regis have been to All Call Signs,” he said. “I don’t know how many other communities would have given as much as the Pink Pub riders have. THey are just brilliant.”

THe cyclists left the pub on June 3 dressed in Home Guard uniforms from the Second World War riding wartime bicycles.

THey cycled 141 miles to Portsmouth and from Cherbourg along the D-Day

beaches in Normandy to Pegasus Bridge near Caen.

THey arrived on the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6. THeir ages ranged from 30 to 55.

One of them, Richard Scopes, 47, said: “I can’t believe how much we have raised. We were unsure when we started if we would attract as much attention as we did on our first ride five years ago.

“But, I would say, we gained even more support. When we rode up here from Butlin’s people were tooting and waving

at us and leaning out of windows to see us.”

Even more funds are due to be donated.

Butlin’s is giving up its gate receipts on a day this month to provide another boost.

THe online page for donations is open until December 31. THe proceeds will be split 90 per cent share for All Call Signs and the rest to Last Night A DJ Saved My Life to support children in crisis.

“It’s also nice for All Call Signs. Being such a new entity, it’s nice to give them a boost. THey can carry out their five-year

plan in 18 months," said Richard.

He said the ride was a challenge because of frequent breakdowns with the bikes. “THe ride was not the hard part but it was difficult having to constantly stop because of the cycles,” he said.

A third ride could be possible but it would require detailed planning.

“It could happen in a few years’ time but it takes a lot of sorting and three months out of our lives,” he added.

THe original ride – to Paris – took place five years ago and raised £125,000.

Spate of arson attacks INVESTIGATIONS have begun to catch the arsonists behind a series of fires in the Bognor Regis area.

Six arson attacks were reported across the town last weekend. THe series of blazes has prompted West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to work with Arun District Council's anti-social behaviour team to find those responsible.

THey have warned small fires can quickly escalate to a potentially life-threatening blaze. Tackling them can also divert vital resources away from other serious incidents.

THe fires have been set in various locations. THey have included parks, residential areas and close to commercial premises.

Chris Bowles, the fire station manager for Bognor Regis, East Wittering and Selsey, said: "THe number of suspected deliberate fires we have dealt with in the town is concerning, and I would urge those responsible to think twice about their actions.

"Fires started deliberately can be particularly dangerous because they generally develop much faster. A fire that is started in a bin can spread to

nearby properties or vehicles.

"What have may started as a small fire, very quickly puts people's lives, homes and businesses at risk."

Last Friday night saw crews from Bognor Regis Fire Station called to deal with the following fires: *5.46pm - fire in the open involving tyres, Harbour Road, Pagham *7.36pm - reports of multiple fires in woodland off Harbour Road, Pagham *7.50pm - an area of about 5sq m of cut grass was set on fire in a field near Whitfield Close *9.04pm - bin on fire in Marine Drive West Further incidents occurred last weekend.

Residents who live near the Hook Lane playground in Pagham chased off a group of young people who had set the climbing frame on fire.

Last Saturday saw the town's firefighters called at 3.42pm to a fire in a field off Mayfields Close, which is believed to have been caused by young people who were playing with fire.

THe fire and rescue service works with the police to prosecute those who start fires deliberately.

From page one has been granted planning consent to redevelop the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites with far-reaching plans. THey involve retail and leisure boardwalk, flats and a hotel to replace the Regis Centre – keeping a theatre for the community charity Arun Arts – and a 1,100-seat theatre, flats and another hotel at Hothamton in Queensway.

His fellow councillors welcomed the idea but said they believed it was premature. Cllr Phil Woodall, the town mayor, said: “I agree this is a good idea and it should go ahead but let’s wait for the cabinet meeting at Arun to see what their plans are and we can go from there.”

Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Hatherleigh) said: “THis is feeling a bit premature.

Until we get a steer from Arun, the opportunities for regeneration in Bognor are completely open. At the end of the day, Arun has got the final say over this. Everything should be on hold until Arun come back and let us know how they will proceed.”

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said he would welcome the chance to hear from the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

But other regeneration proposers, such as 4BR and Re-invigorate, should also be invited to make presentations as well.

“THere are a lot of good ideas out there. I would like to see the lot. If we are going to invite one, we should invite the lot,” he said.

Cllr Matt Stanley (I, Marine) supported him. He said: “I would also be interested in sitting through a presentation from the Sir Richard Hotham Project and any other regeneration groups that would be interested in coming in and having a presentation.”

Street trader is told 'try again' A COOK had his bid to sell food in Bognor Regis town centre rejected because of his downmarket trailer.

Piotr Ciosek was told councillors liked his idea of providing organic beef burgers.

But they believed the mobile unit from which he wanted to trade would not benefit the London Road precinct.

Cllr John Charles, chairman of Arun District Council's licensing subcommittee, said: "We have discussed this at length and we reluctantly refuse the application because it does not improve the town centre.

"However, we are extremely happy with the offering and the food side and we want to encourage you to discuss with our officers, the stakeholders and the Bognor Regis Improvement District representatives to improve on your market stall. We wish you all the best."

He suggested Mr Ciosek looked at the seafront outlets to see how he could gain the sub-committee's approval.

"I think this (stall) would do you more harm than good. I probably shouldn't say that but I am trying to help you.

"You should talk to our officers and then re-apply at a later date," he said.

Council licensing officer Sarah Meerten said: "We will provide some guidance to Mr Ciosek." He began those talks straight after last Friday's meeting.

Mr Ciosek had applied for street trading consent to site his stall in the precinct to sell burgers, tortillas, and hot and cold drinks as the King of Tastes.

His intended hours of business were 8am to 3pm at weekends. His mobile unit would measure 7ft x 5ft.

Mr Ciosek said he was inspired to seek to start a business because of the problems he and his family had found in buying healthy food when they were out in the town.

"None of the restaurants are able to satisfy my family because they all want different things," he said.

"We try to eat good quality, organic food, which as we know these days is really, really difficult. We are not the only family in Bognor Regis like this.

"THe benefit people will get out of my business is with that type of food."

Mr Ciosek had applied to sell food for a year. He had offered to paint his trailer in a colour of the sub-committee's choosing and create a logo its members liked. *Mrs Meerten told the committee she intended to create a new street trading policy for Bognor Regis to reflect the improved town centre.

"THere have been some enhancements to the public realm and it's consider important to review our street trading policy in line with these improvements so we can be sure street trading provision in this area enhances the offering for customers," she said.

THe policy would consider which traders would best improve the precinct, benefit shoppers and increase footfall.

"If we consider this with what we already have on the high street, we need to have a balance between the number of street traders and local businesses.

"We will be considering if traders bring a positive addition to the town centre," she added. Work on the new policy should start this summer.

Housing rejected for Yapton farm FEARS that Yapton was being strangled by housing led to plans for more homes to be narrowly rejected.

THe outline scheme for 33 dwellings was thrown out by councillors because it was planned for top class farmland.

THey overturned the advice of their planning officers after Arun District Council development control committee acting chairman, Cllr Isobel THurston, used her casting vote against the houses to break a 4-4 tie with five abstentions.

Cllr Martin Lury (LD, Bersted), who was the meeting’s vice-chairman, said he agreed with Yapton Parish Council’s view the site should be kept as a green lung among the new housing.

“THis is grade one agricultural land. THat is a rare resource and one we should be preserving. THis is ‘concrete-isation’ of the land. You can’t take every piece of green land and look to build on it,” he said.

Committee member Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Aldwick E) said the use of Grade One

agricultural land for housing conflicted with policies in Arun’s local plan, Yapton’s neighbourhood plan and the government’s national policy planning framework.

“THis is the death by strangulation of a thousand planning permissions. THis is effectively beginning to strangle the northern access of Yapton with these applications,” he said.

Cllr Henry Jones (LD, Yapton) told the committee: “You are looking at nearly 3,000 extra houses in one (council) ward over the next decade, which will double the population of this ward, which is frankly not sustainable for North End Road. THe traffic on that road is quite congested.”

Paul White, Domusea’s planning agent, said: “THis part of Yapton has been the focus for development because it’s a very good sustainable location for housing, close to facilities, the school and local transport.”

Aldingbourne hosts solar farm proposals for villagers to view PLANS for solar farm are going on show in Aldingbourne next week.

Jose Bruno Aveiro-Leca, 51, of Downview Road, died at the scene when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a van in Burndell Road around 9am on June 20.

Pupils find out the facts on recycling CHILDREN from a Bognor Regis school have been behind the scenes to discover what happens to recycling from their homes.

THe latest generation of young recyclers visited the Materials Recycling Facility in Ford, which is run by Viridor on behalf of West Sussex County Council.

THe all-expenses paid trip was organised after St Mary's Catholic Primary School won a competition earlier this year as part of a green month.

Head teacher Peter Edgington said: "It is so important for children to understand how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle. THe children saw all the materials first hand today and realised how important recycling is to the future of the planet."

THe key stage 2 pupils got out to head out to the viewing platform which sits above the facility's specialist machinery to see

how recycling is sorted, bunkered and baled ready to be made into new products.

THey took part in a quiz to learn which items can go into a kerbside recycling bin and were told why it is so important to try to reduce or reuse as well as recycle.

THey also watched a Wastebuster video explaining how waste is created and the process it goes through from the home to being recycled into new items.

As part of their environmental work at the school in Glamis Street, the pupils have been studying how to cut its use of water.

THey have also been weighing its food waste bins and encouraging their friends to have smaller portions to reduce leftovers.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, the county council's cabinet member for environment, said: "I was delighted to meet the pupils and so encouraged to see them genuinely interested inhow they can help us to recycle more and waste less."

Charity car wash is back COLLEAGUES at a funeral homes around Bognor Regis are dusting off their rags for a charity car wash tomorrow.

Employees at THe Co-operative Funeralcare will be at its premises in Nyetimber Lane in Rose Green and buffing up cars and vans of all shapes and sizes from 10am to 1pm.

THey will be raising money for the Bognor Regis Lions Club - Wencelas Appeal. THis is aimed at helping people get out of fuel poverty during the winter.

It is the second year in which the appeal will have benefited from the car wash. Last year's event raised £180.

Scouting in Bognor Regis is best for fellow districts in county to follow PIONEERING work is being carried out by Scouts and their leaders in Bognor Regis.

County commissioner Robert Sawyer said the Scouting district which covered the town was the best in West Sussex at involving young people in its work.

"THey are leading the way in West Sussex.

THey have got a lot of young people in leadership roles and, in the past year, they have had a number of members gain the Queen's Scout Award. which is the highest award in Scouting.

"THere are also five Scouts from here going to the jamboree in America.

"Especially on the youth side, there are one or two other districts that I would recommend taking a look at what is going on in Bognor Regis. It is somewhere that is going in the right direction," he said.

THe Scouting district of Bognor Regis is one of the smallest in area of the ten in West Sussex.

But Mr Sawyer said it punched well above its weight when it came to taking part in county-wide activities.

"THey always support what we are doing.

At a Go Beaver event recently, there were 100 from Bognor Regis out of 800 in all," he said.

THe popularity of Scouting around the town showed the movement was still relevant to young people as the 21st century progressed.

"Scouting is about finding your feet and gaining confidence in a safe place. THey may not be able to find their voice but coming to Scouting enables them to do that," said Mr Sawyer.

He made his remarks at the Bognor Regis and District Scouts' annual meeting last week. THe event at the Newtown Sports and Social Club saw awards presented to the leading Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers of the past year.

Tsunami Explorer Harry Mason scooped two individual awards and earned a share of a team award.

He was named as the young leader of the year and the Explorer Scout of the year as well as being one of the Explorers who gained the Bill Robinson Award.

Engineering student Harry, 17, said: "It feels really good to have won these awards.

I've been in Scouting for about 10 years. It has given me more confidence.

"It's all about meeting new people and it's like having a second family.

"I like the activities, canoeing and climbing are my favourite ones, and being a Young Leader and helping to push the next generation of Scouts."

He also credited Scouting with helping his ambition to become a product designer and engineering after he has finished his current course at Chichester College.

THe Scout of the year award was presented to Daniel Boon, 13, of 1st Felpham Scouts.

"Some of my friends were in Scouting and I decided to join them about seven years ago," he said. "I wanted to do something outside school with them.

"I like the activities, particularly sailing.

I sail Toppers, which are small twoman sailing boats, off Felpham every Wednesday."

THe award was the second for Daniel after

he won the Leaping Wolf award a few years ago when he moved from Cubs to Scouts.

Acting district commissioner Ken Poupart told the meeting: "THe popularity of Scouting in the district does not abate and, unfortunately, as a result of this we have waiting lists in some parts of the district.

"THe recruitment of leaders is, and always will be, a continuing difficulty, as essentially we are trying to take them from the families of the young people who want to join, and young families have demands of their own in today's world."

Some of the shortfall was made up by the Young Leaders who used their free time to put back into Scouting what they had gained in their earlier years, he said.

THe number of Cubs, Beavers and Scouts in the Bognor Regis district is 578, the same as the previous year. THey are helped by about 100 leaders.

Duke opens trust's new HQ

A DECADE of dreaming has formally ended at an Aldingbourne site.

THe Duke of Richmond declared the headquarters of the Aldingbourne Trust as formally open in his role as the charity's patron.

THe ceremony and celebration at the £4m Quarry Building at the Aldingbourne Country Centre was the result of planning by the trust which dated back to 2009.

THe Duke said: "THe Quarry Building is the culmination of 10 years of designing, securing support, funding and construction.

"It offers a new vision for social care where local businesses, the community and people who have learning disabilities and/or autism can learn, work and prosper.

"It's a model which is attracting international attention. THe impressive building is a new West Sussex gem which I would encourage everyone to visit."

THe Duke's family have supported the Aldingbourne Trust, for many years.

His father opened the centre's wood recycling project in 2006.

Some of this wood is powering the three-storey Quarry Building, which came into use last September.

THe country centre is in Blackmill Lane, just north of the A27.

It boasts an indoor slide, a cafe, meeting rooms and a shop for members of the public to use.

Two of the centre's members, Sean Simmonds and James Weller, spoke to guests about how much they enjoy being involved with all the opportunities on offer at the centre and their pride in the Quarry Building.

Representatives of the Aldingbourne Trust took the chance at last THursday's opening ceremony to thank everyone involved in supporting its fundraising to develop and improve the facilities at the country centre.

THis included people who had jumped out of planes, scaled the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, cycled across the UK and Europe, and run marathons.

Special thanks were also given to the Coast to Capital local economic partnership for its backing.

Tony Middleton, its chief operating officer, said: "We are delighted to support the Aldingbourne Trust. THe space here is truly inspiring."

THe country centre also has an open farm, new children's play areas, a horse rug washing and repair service, and a horticulture area.

THe Aldingbourne Trust is an awardwinning charity that helps people with learning disabilities and/or autism to have the same chances as everyone else to live independent lives.

It was founded in August, 1978, by three parents whose sons were at a Mencap rural training site near Yeovil and were facing an uncertain future.

THe parents leased 15 acres at Aldingbourne House, a 60-bed holiday home for patients with a learning disability run by Surrey Health Authority.

THey had no experience of training or horticulture but made a success of the new venture.

Dogs delight at club show DELIGHTED dog owners saw their pets win prizes at an annual show in North Bersted.

Hosted by the Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club, the companion dog show attracted another large crowd.

Press officer Phil Lewis said: "THis year's show we welcomed Kim Brown as our new show secretary and it turned out to be yet another great success.

Proud owners were able to enter their pets in several different categories at Sunday's show at Jubilee Field. THese included obedience, pedigree and novelty.

Best puppy was won by six-month old Betsy, a whippet owned by Margaret Wilson of North Mundham.

THe three obedience classes were particularly popular.

Melinda Partner judged the starters class, which was won by Fareham resident Juliet Andrews with Fudge, her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Assessed by Ruth Palmer, Hetty the German Shepherd and her owner, Angela Jones, from Bognor Regis, left with the award for the triers category.

Hetty also won best in show, judged by Grace Morris.

THe improvers category was won by Fiona Bird, from Drayton, with her German Spitz, Ivy, and was judged by Pam THompson.

As always, the novelty classes were popular, with an entry in most categories.

AJ, a German Shepherd Husky owned

by Lee Wiles and Matt Berry, won overall best in show - judged by David Vivash.

Best veteran was chosen as Spud, a 15year-old Terrier cross, owned by Lulu Roberts, of North Bersted.

Archie, the six-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, owned by Anastasia Lagarez, from Littlehampton, was the winner of the fancy dress category, for the second year in a row.

THere were also awards for best rescue, dog most like owner, most handsome dog and many others.

THis year saw the introduction of a level one rally ring for the first time, giving dogs and handlers the chance to try out the new sport.

A PROPOSAL to house nearly 200 workers at a Pagham nursery has been withdrawn.

Cre8 has told Arun District Council it no longer wants to continue with the plan for Newlands Nursery, in Pagham Road.

THe company's planning agent, Paul Hughes, said in an email to the council: "We have received instructions from our client to withdraw the application for the retention of the seasonal workers accommodation at Newlands Nursery."

As reported, residents around the nursery were angry at the plan.

Pagham Parish Council had also objected because its members feared the site would become an accommodation hub for workers from other nurseries.

Between 93 and 186 employees would have been housed there from February to November.

` Wallet stolen A WALLET and some power tools were stolen during a burglary in Annandale Avenue, in Bognor Regis, overnight on June 20.

THe same night saw two pedal cycles and two golf clubs stolen from a garage in Canons Close, Aldwick.

` Vehicle break-ins CASH and CDs were stolen from a vehicle in Selsey Avenue, Bognor Regis, overnight on June 22. Two days earlier, aftershave was taken from a vehicle in Spencer Street.

Homeless crisis WEST SUSSEX County Council has been warned it is ‘sleepwalking into a potentially catastrophic situation’ over the services it offers to vulnerable adults.

By April, 2020, the council will have cut its housing related support budget by £4m to £2.3m, with a review of the contracts it runs being held in September.

THe cuts left service providers such as Stonepillow in shock, with concerns about the consequences for homeless people, vulnerable adults and older people.

At a meeting of the health and adult social care select committee (HASC) earlier this month, members were told that thousands of people needed the services, a figure Cllr Dr James Walsh described as ‘staggeringly shocking’.

THe council was recently on the receiving end of a damning Ofsted report, which rated its children’s services ‘inadequate’, followed closely by a highly critical report into its fire and rescue services.

Cllr Walsh was loath to see the bad news continue. He said: “My view is that we are, as a select committee and a council, sleep walking into a potentially

catastrophic situation for West Sussex.

“We had a very critical review of Ofsted of the children’s services of this county council. I don’t want to be here in two or three years’ time when we have a similar outside body coming and telling us that we’ve failed in our duty across the public service.”

THe meeting was provided with details of which were likely to receive funding after September and which were not.

Funding to support older people in their homes was listed as ‘unlikely’ to continue, while support for homeless exoffenders was described as ‘not a priority for funding’.

THe task and finish group has been working with consultants Snook – ‘who specialise in trying to unravel systems and how they work’ – to look at and understand the current and future needs of the county’s homeless community.

After hearing about the budget cuts, the service providers banded together to form a coalition, attending workshops with the task and finish group and being kept informed about the approach being taken.

` Unwanted guns

New recruits WEST SUSSEX Fire & Rescue Service has welcomed nine new retained (oncall) firefighters to its ranks following an intensive two week training programme.

Having been put through their paces in the yard at Worthing Fire Station they welcomed family and friends to a pass out parade on Friday, June 21.

THey will now join the crews at a number of fire stations across the county to provide on-call support. Many of the new recruits have full-time jobs elsewhere in their communities. Living or working in close proximity the station, they can be paged at any time of the day to respond to an emergency situation.

THe course marked a return to West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service for Chris Relf, who will be joining the ranks of East Wittering Fire Station in addition to his day job at West Sussex Alternative Provisions College in North Mundham, having previously served at Bosham Fire Station.

He said: "THe best thing is the

camaraderie, we are all in it together.

Having done it before I would definitely advise anyone to give it a go. Everyone looks out for each other and you get to do some really, really interesting things."

Galo David Choez Loor is the newest recruit to join Chichester Fire Station.

Living and working in the city at a coffee shop, he was keen to explore something new.

He said: "I love helping people, that was one of my main incentives for doing this.

“I would encourage anyone who wants to become an on call firefighter to do so. It is a hard course but it is really rewarding, and it gives you real skills for life. You study and work with people from different backgrounds so you get to meet a lot of different people."

People in possession of unwanted guns or ammunition are being encouraged to hand them in as part of a campaign to make Sussex safer.

Many firearms are held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality, or are overlooked and forgotten in people’s homes. Others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to harm, threaten and intimidate their local communities.

THis appeal gives people the chance to dispose of firearms or ammunition by simply handing them in at their local police station – a list of opening times and locations can be found below.

During the surrender period, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for illegal possession of a firearm at the point of surrender of the firearm to lawful authority, and they can remain anonymous.

However, this surrender does not mean police will not investigate firearms offences, should any come to light, once the operation has concluded.

THis is a firearms surrender; not a firearms amnesty, and police are committed to reduce the harm to our communities from firearms crime.

THe surrender, which runs from Monday to Sunday, August 4, forms part of a national campaign by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS).

THe aim of the operation, is to reduce the number of illegally held firearms in circulation.

Charity's unique dementia service A CHARITY which works in Bognor Regis and Chichester has released a new film about the impact living with dementia has on families.

THe film, made by Dementia Support, looks at Ann and Bob, a couple from the area, who have been affected by dementia and hugely benefited from the support provided by the charity.

Bob was diagnosed back in 2014 and, since becoming his primary carer, Ann felt increasingly isolated and swamped with leaflets.

She found comfort in Sage House, Dementia Support's care centre in Tangmere.

Ann said: “If we hadn’t found Dementia Support, I would never have been able to find the support Jacquie, my Wayfinder, has put in place.

"THere was nowhere we could go before Sage House was open.

"I can talk to people, Bob can talk to people, and if I’m not coping well, I know I can come to Dementia Support.”

THe unique Wayfinders provide support for families and help them find their way through the dementia journey. A Wayfinder is an individual who will supply personalised guidance for people with dementia and their families.

Dementia Support recently launched its £1m Wayfinder Appeal

to expand their services into the community.

Dementia Support, set up in 2014, currently only reaches 10 per cent of people living with dementia and the appeal will go towards more Wayfinder appointments, along with activity opportunities such as yoga mats for THai Chi sessions.

THe charity hopes to take away the inevitable stress that comes when bombarded with information and forms after a diagnosis.

Sage House was opened in May last year by the Countess of Wessex. THe centre offers information and advice, as well as day care, activities, and therapy rooms.

It also offers a smart zone, using innovative technology to help individuals keep up to date with the latest technology while still keeping their independence.

Figures produced by West Sussex County Council and the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group estimates that there are currently 14,820 people living in West Sussex with dementia.

THis number is set to increase a further 26 per cent by 2021.

As one in six people over the age of 80 currently has dementia in the UK, the charity aims to give quality care to help reduce loneliness for those living with, or caring for someone with, dementia.

Council return dental toolkit

THe dental toolkit is part of the West Sussex sugar reduction programme.

It has seen the council’s public health team work alongside the Local Dental Committee, Health Education England and Public Health England to develop the toolkit for dentists to help promote a healthier lifestyle for patients.

THis work has raised awareness of the harms of sugar on teeth and its effect on general health; too much sugar can lead to an internal build-up of harmful fat.

THe presence of this fat around vital organs can cause weight gain and serious diseases in the future, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

First launched in May, 2018, the fourweek pilot ran in 12 dental practices across West Sussex.

Aligned to the national Change4Life and ‘top tips for teeth’ campaigns, the toolkit included badges, stickers, promotional materials, social media links and prescription pads supporting dental teams to promote sugar reduction awareness among patients.

Patients were also directed to healthy lifestyle services within their local wellbeing hub for more support if required.

Following the success of the pilot, it was named a national award winner at the Public Health England Conference in Warwick. And now it is being rolled out to all dentists across the county in a bid to promote better dental health among residents.

Children across the country are eating an extra 2,800 sugar cubes a year, which is more than double the recommended

amount.

Too much sugar is bad for children’s health and can also cause painful tooth decay. Every 10 minutes, a child in England has a tooth removed in hospital.

Cllr Amanda Jupp, the county council’s cabinet member for adults and health, said: “I know our public health team has been working remarkably hard on the dental toolkit, so it is incredibly rewarding to see it receive such a positive response from dentists across the county.

"THere are some really straightforward steps that all of us can take to help improve our dental health which will prevent bigger problems further down the line.

“I hope everyone who visits their dentist will be able to embrace this initiative and take it forward into their everyday lives.”

Dear Editor, I note with interest the sign now displayed at the entrance to the London Road shops stating that cycling was against the law on the pavement and I believe it is also being prohibited in London Road.

I must agree with this as nearly every day in Bognor Regis there are adults cycling on the pavement and, unfortunately, you do not hear them coming.

In these days of health and safety, I find it amazing this is still being tolerated and I am sure before long someone will be knocked over.

Although I agree with this law, who is going to enforce it as you never see a police officer in Bognor Regis, but perhaps the officials employed to fine people for litter dropping or fouling of the pavement could take on the responsibility?

Anyway, cycles are for the road and anyone not confident to be on the road should not be on a bike.

My other complaint is concerning the weeds growing near the kerbs

along West Street and adjoining roads which is a disgrace.

I am sure the council is welcoming the hot weather as now the weeds will probably die in the heat.

In the month when Arun District Council's new administration is due to scrap the Pavilion Park plans, I cannot believe that these 'much loved' gardens must be saved.

If the population of Bognor Regis were so infatuated with the Sunken Garden, then on the hottest day of the year, where was everyone? No-one having a picnic or playing in the children's park?

I believe it to be an absolute falsehood that these gardens are treasured by residents. I spoke to a grandmother recently who said 'THere's no way I'd take my grandchildren there'. I think this says

Don’t miss either the towering director Phil Grabsky’s Rembrandt, hosted by the National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, an event like no other.

Four more emerging comedians are bringing their Edinburgh Fringe shows for Felpham audiences to hear before travelling north. Today (Friday, July 5), Matt Hoss is first on at THe George at 8pm, followed by Janet Garner and Paul Cox with their set titled Common People (Again). THe following week, July 12, sees Spaniard Sonia Aste, who now lives in the UK, with Made in Spain 2, on stage before Joe Jacobs.

Art, Ivon Hitchens: Space Through Colour. A fresh look at one of Britain’s most admired modern artists, whose paintings brought continental colour to the English landscape, has opened at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, until October 13.

Ivon Hitchens (1893 – 1979) is muchloved for his landscape paintings featuring swathes of bright colour, many

painted in the open air surrounding his secluded Sussex home. Yet there is more to the artist than the post-war work for which he is best known. THis exhibition, the largest on Hitchens since 1989, considers the whole scope of the British painter’s career, which spanned six decades.

Submerge yourself in an emotional ride Theatre review 

THe raw emotion in the main character, Hester Collyer, played by Nancy Carroll, was felt through her incredible portrayal of a woman hopelessly in love and loved but perhaps not the way she wishes.

THe play is set in 1951, in a shabby Ladbroke Grove flat where Hester’s neighbours find her unconscious; she has taken an overdose in front of the gas fire.

THeir only option is to notify her husband, Sir William Collyer – a pillar of the establishment.

But Hester left her husband the previous year to embark upon a passionate love affair with dashing ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page. What has happened in her life to make her want to end it? And can she

bring herself to go on living?

Director Paul Foster perfectly stages turmoil and post-war hardship. Likewise Gerald Kyd (Bill Collyer) and Hadley Fraser (Freddie Page) opposites in extremes from their costumes through to their charisma and the way in which they love Hester.

Fraser shows a clever portrayal of a man suffering from his own insecurities and failures combining with a reliance on alcohol to drown them out while Kyd is a judge with a Rolls-Royce, successful career,

self confidence and dignity.

THe supporting cast seemed to lack in as much credibility as the three main characters, aside from Denise Black, as Mrs Elton, who enjoys a good gossip but with her heart in the right place and Matthew Cottle as Mr Miller, the doctor who speaks frankly but sincerely to help Hester see sense.

Deep Blue Sea is a thrilling performance combining heartache, passion, intimacy and frustration.

Nature inspires fine performances Music review

by Alicia Denny Eight Seasons & A Blackbird Chichester Cathedral THursday, June 27 NATURE in all its infinite variety has been the source of inspiration for many composers over the centuries and one of the favourite concertos of all time is THe Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi.

A vivacious and stirring yet melodious performance of this classic by the Celoniatus Ensemble, led by the hugely-talented Harriet Mackenzie, was the first of six events organised by Amici Concerts for the Festival of Chichester, at the Cathedral.

THe appreciative audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance of the baroque 'Seasons', which is normally heard with a full orchestra behind the

soloist. It was refreshingly bright to have just ten musicians, and closer to the original sound.

After the interval, the blackbird of the concert's title - Eight Seasons and a Blackbird - appeared in a light but interesting piece again evoking the natural world by Canadian composer Emily Doolittle, conjuring up a blackbird singing in the rain, interpreted through Harriet's skilful musicality.

Contrasting but, at the same time, complementing the first two items, Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires was a refreshing piece of modern music. It was complex, busy and fascinating, with shades of tango and jazz as well as a nod to Vivaldi, the ensemble brought passion to the piece as well as showing some unusual versatility with their instruments, such as the string bassist who created percussive effects.

If the other performances being mounted by Amici are anything like the standard of this opener, music lovers following festival events are in for a number of treats.

He said: “THe concert will include a wide selection of music by gifted performers with a local connection.

Sixteen-year-old Bognor-based cellist James Dew, who plays in the National Youth orchestra and attends the junior department of the Royal College of Music, will play Frescobaldi’s Toccata.

"Soprano Olivia Moss, who recently won the Gus Christie prize for outstanding performer at the Glyndebourne Academy, will sing

popular songs and opera arias

by Mozart, Brahms and Debussy.

Mezzo-soprano Tina Gelnere, who studies for a post graduate course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and recently sang a solo part for the Welsh National Opera, will sing operatic solos and join Olivia in well-loved duets.

"Euphonium player Martin Smith will play some delightful arrangements on his unusual but beautiful sounding instrument, pianist Mark Zarb-Adami will play Chopin’s Heroic Polonaise and Ian Clark will sing songs from shows.

To complete the programme, the Full House Wind Quartet, comprising clarinettist Spence Bundy, bassoonist Alison Woodward, flautist Gerda Wilcocks and oboist Clare THorntonWood, will play works for wind quartet.”

Chris added “It is a privilege to be able to present and accompany such a talented group of performers in aid

of such a worthwhile cause.”

Businesses back night of top opera Opera Night Friday, July 12, 7.30pm AN outstanding night of opera, featuring world-class performances from superbly talented and nationally acclaimed opera singers, is in prospect for Bognor Regis audiences.

Opera Night is a development of the ‘60 Minutes of Classical Music’ concert series, organised by classically trained resident Roger Clayden. Bognor Regis Business Improvement District (BID) has worked in partnership with Roger to help bring three of the country’s top opera singers to perform at the event.

International knights

With the thunder of hooves and the clash of metal on metal, jousting champions from around the world will be descending on Arundel Castle for the Medievel Jousting Week, July 23-28, when knights on horseback challenge each other for the title of champion.

More than 200 costumed characters will be

involved in demonstrating crafts, falconry and cooking from the period.

For the first time, THe Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton, north of Chichester, is hosting a full six-week summer season of plays, opera, music and film in

Blooming good

All Saints Church, Findon Valley, Worthing, with St Peter’s High Salvington, is holding a flower festival on July 13 and 14, alongside open gardens in the community. On the Saturday, the church is open 10am-5pm plus a table sale, raffle and tombola with refreshments in the adjacent hall. Gardens are open 1-5 pm.

On Sunday, the flower festival is open from 1-5pm, followed by a Songs of Praise service at 6pm. Entry is £5 for adults, children free, inclusive all weekend.

Family fun

With 50 years passing since the first manned landing on the moon, Chichester's Planetarium is hosting some special events.

MoonFest! is a series of events hosted by THe South Downs Planetarium to educate and entertain residents and visitors of all ages.

THe Planetarium is located to the south of the city of Chichester, by the campus of the High School.

With its 100-seater auditorium, colourful displays and well-stocked sales kiosk, the Planetarium has something for would-be astronauts and stargazers aged six years and above.

Inspiring museum celebrates the Royal Air Force Tangmere Aviation Museum Gamecock Terrace, Tangmere, Chichester PO20 2ES Tel: 01243 790090 Email: info@tangmere-museum.org.uk www.tangmere-museum.org.uk IF you and your family have been inspired by last month's commemorations of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a visit to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is sure to thrill.

THe museum is on part of the site of a major base used by the Royal Air Force and its predecessor, the Royal Flying Corps, from 1918 until its final closure in 1970.

It became famous during the Second World War when it was a centre for pilots fighting in the Battle of Britain.

Many secret service agents were dropped into occupied France from aircraft flown from Tangmere and, after the war, several air speed records were set by pilots from the airfield.

Displays relating to these historic achievements are among the many fascinating exhibits in the museum but visitors are also thrilled to see aircraft in the two hangars.

Several are on loan from the Royal Air Force Museum, including the Hawker Hunter used

by Neville Duke to break the airspeed record in 1953.

Tangmere Military  Aviation Museum is located in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane, help to recreate the atmosphere of the RAF station's most important period. THere are also many relevant artefacts linked to the pilots who fought so valiantly in their aircraft.

A dozen jet aircraft spanning the decades after the war can be appreciated by visitors as well as several cockpits and engines so that the technical developments can be admired.

A Westland helicopter and simulators for both adults and children to try are among the other attractions.

Light refreshments are available in the wartime-style tea room at this volunteer-run museum, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Museum was born when a group of like-minded enthusiasts met to discuss ways of keeping the memory of RAF Tangmere alive.

Set up by Suzy Duxbury, an ATCL Trinity and LAMDA qualified teacher, Dramatis is on a mission to bring the benefits of drama to the West Sussex community.

Whilst some drama schools are known for cultivating a competitive environment and pushing people to their limits to get the best out of them, Dramatis focuses on nurturing individual personalities and skills. For younger members of the community who are growing up in a tech dominated world, drama encourages creativity and self-expression whilst nourishing their imagination. It teaches children to think on their feet and can help them to both stand out from the crowd and to work within a group. One of the most important skills it brings is an increased level of self-confidence, plus the opportunity to make friends outside their usual circuit. Dramatis Youth Drama activities include Drama Classes, School Workshops, Holiday Workshops, Private Tuition and Children’s Parties.

For the adults, drama can help develop a number of skills to help in day to day life. These may include improved communication skills in relationships and at work, increased self-confidence, stress relief, meeting new people, improved empathy skills and increased assertiveness. Dramatis Adult Drama activities include Act Your Age (a sociable drama group), Adult Courses, Corporate Training and Public Speaking.

The Dramatis Outreach programme, provides free classes and workshops to more vulnerable members of the community. Funded by charity donations and council grants, Dramatis Outreach is designed to improve life for West Sussex residents by reducing social isolation and developing interpersonal skills. Tasty trend for gastropubs

started in 1990s The word (or words) gastropub - a combination of gastronomy and public house - entered everyday English in the 1990s and was defined as a pub serving good quality food, wine and beer.

FOR centuries, inns and pubs had served food but often the menu was limited and either cold, such as sandwiches, pasties and ploughman's lunch, or 'pub grub', a label including everything with chips - ham and egg, pies, sausages or other simple dishes.

In 1984, Spinnakers Brew Pub opened in Victoria, British Columbia, the first custom-built brewpub in Canada. It heralded a new wave of brewpubs and craft breweries in British Columbia which followed a major deregulation of the brewing industry in that province.

Spinnakers served inventive cuisine and has claims to be the world's oldest gastropub. Bars in the United States soon followed suit, then Britain with THe Eagle in London's Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell, being the first in this country to use the label in 1991.

As with those who have followed in its wake, THe Eagle serves food of a limited menu of restaurant-quality with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients with regularly-changing specials. THere are seats and tables throughout the pub, creating a relaxed environment for both eating and drinking.

In the 20 years since this innovation landed on our shores, gastropubs have sprung up everywhere and in West

Sussex we're fortunate to have many delicious dining and drinking choices within easy reach.

A number are housed in traditional inns, deep in the countryside, offering rural views, quiet gardens and old world ambience but with the sophistication of a menu worthy of a chic city restaurant and a complementary wine list to suit all tastes.

1/3 cup mayonnaise 1 large egg, beaten 2 tbsp. dijon mustard 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp. hot sauce salt and pepper 1 lb. Selsey lump crabmeat 3/4 cup bread crumbs 2 tbsp. parsley oil, for frying lemon wedges tartare sauce

1. In a small bowl, whisk together mayo, egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire, and hot sauce, and season with salt and pepper.

           

2. In a medium bowl, stir together crab meat, bread crumbs, and parsley. Fold in mayo mixture, then form into eight patties.

3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, coat pan with oil and heat until shimmering. Add crab cakes and cook, in batches, until golden and crispy, three to five minutes per side.

4. Serve with lemon and tartare sauce.

From the hustle and bustle of the outside road, the minute the door closes behind you, it's a completely different world.

My friend Nicola and I visited on a Saturday evening, where the temperatures had rocketed well above average, but luckily the staff had turned on the air conditioning which provided an instantly cooling relief from the sticky humidity outside.

Nicola and I chose a table between the conservatory area and the main bar to try the special steak menu. THe wooden criss-cross of beams are delicately decorated with fairy lights twinkling in the dusk.

THe 'Woodies Steak Out’ goes live on THursday, July 11, and every THursday thereafter. THis offer is available from 12pm to 3pm and 5pm until 9.30pm, both lunch and dinner services.

Steaks to choose from include 8oz ribeye, 8oz sirloin, T-Bone, fillet and vegan. Diners can order two steaks (ribeye or sirloin) and receive a bottle of house red or white wine, all for just £29.95.

THe wine is a Spanish red, Ayrum Tempranillo Ganache or a Spanish white, Ayrum Verdejo.

sauce, which I poured over my steak and the cheese sauce, which I delightfully dunked my triple cooked chips, seasoned with rosemary and sea salt, in, although Nicola opted for her steak just as it was and commented on the tasty chargrill flavour.

THe flat mushrooms, watercress and vine tomatoes were an additional bonus, all cooked well too and the fine beans and salad with balsamic were great side dishes.

Despite the generous portion sizes, we were both tempted by the desserts and chose the warm double chocolate nut brownie, served with a caramelised banana and Caramac ice cream.

I think this was possibly the best dessert I have had in a long time. THe banana was still firm but the caramelised

sleek, sophisticated atmosphere with an extensive menu offering the best food from local produce"

fillet and chicken liver pate, and went straight for the main meals.

After a lot of discussion with helpful staff about how they aim to source as many ingredients locally as possible, I chose an 8oz sirloin steak and my friend opted for the 8oz ribeye steak.

THe steaks were both cooked to perfection, exactly what we had asked for. We had decided to try the peppercorn

flavour with the ice cream and chocolate brownie was the best combination of flavours.

THe brownie was perfectly gooey and melted in the mouth without being too sickly or sticky.

THe trendy bar with extensive cocktails, wines and other alcoholic treats is the perfect setting for any occasion and the food is even better!

FORMER Bognor Boys Club members have been invited to their latest reunion.

THe get-together will be held from 7pm on July 19 at Bognor Regis Town FC in Nyewood Lane. It will mark the 80th anniversary of the year the boys club opened its doors in Westloats Lane.

Frank Enticknapp, one of the organisers of the reunion, said: "Some 54 Old Boys are expected to attend. Anyone whose circumstances have changed and who now finds themselves unable to attend, please let Rob Willard know as we are required to advise catering numbers. He is on 01243 827588.

"Again, for the same reason, if there are others who will now be attending, let Rob know."

THe foundation stone of the boys club was laid at 6.40pm on July 19, 1938, but Frank said it was still unclear when the club greeted its first members.

"Whilst every endeavour has been made to establish the actual date of the club opening night, we have not had any luck so far.

"If any reader has any information, please let us know on the above number," he said.

Barnham resident Frank said it was appropriate the reunion was being held at THe Rocks' given the recent news the football club was welcoming back its youth side to the ground.

Many of the boys club members, pictured above in one of their teams, went on to play for Bognor in its county league days.

He said this extract from the football club's 1951/52 handbook showed the strong ties between the two clubs: 'To many, the expression of Boys Clubs means next to nothing, to others, thankfully in the minority, it immediately conjures in their imagination hordes of unruly ill-mannered scruffy individuals sadly lacking in respect for man or beast.

"Such is not the case in Bognor Regis; mention the name Bognor Regis Boys Club to all and sundry and the conversation at once becomes interesting and instructive.

'THe Bognor Football Club is proud to give this space in this, its first official publication, to the male youths of THe Royal Town.

'THis was the season that the first eleven had a 100 per cent record and were named the "Undefeated". THe other notable achievement that year was their third consecutive appearance in the final of the Sussex Minor Cup.' Two of the players who went from the boys club to the football club played for England youth sides. A few of those who achieved success were George Logan, Ernie Randall and Derek Holden.

TEACHERS from Asia are experiencing daily life in classrooms in the Bognor Regis area.

THe 21 South Korean teachers are the latest to take part in an in-service teacher development programme at the University of Chichester's campus in the town.

THe training enables them to develop their professional knowledge and practical skills in teaching English as well as giving them the skills to pass on their knowledge to their colleagues in Seoul after they have returned.

A spokesman for the university's international short programme unit said: "In addition to spending time training at the university, the teachers will each spend two weeks in local schools learning more about the English education system and developing their teaching skills.

THe unit has been working in the field of international teacher education for about 40 years and designs tailor-made and externally commissioned short courses as required. It is also working with teachers from Japan, Spain and Nigeria as well as those from Korea.

SCAM targets are potentially being saved from being conned by supermarkets in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Tesco does not sell multiple vouchers, such as Amazon and iTunes, at its Bognor Regis store and only at its customer service desk in Chichester. THe policy was revealed to Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice awareness and campaigns manager, Ken Porter, as the service staged advice days at the stores.

"THis is good news," he said. "One lady was saved £1,000 by this.

THis will help our community avoid this heinous crime of giving money or vouchers to receive a prize or rebate.

"People are being contacted and told they owe money to someone like the taxman which has to be paid in vouchers."

THe first of the advice events was held at the Chichester store and saw the Citizens Advice team and members of West Sussex trading standards talk to more than 160 people.

But it was too late for one woman. She had been tricked out of £30,000 by a rogue trader who knocked her at her front door and convinced her to hand over the money for a non-existent service.

At Bognor Regis, some 130 people were advised how to stay one step ahead of the scammers. Romance scams are another trick.

"Sussex has the highest proportion in the country of people suffering from romance scams. I think that's because there are lots of older, vulnerable people who are struggling with being bereaved," said Mr Porter.

Police community support officers Julie Jones and Jess Chambers were also present. PCSO Chambers said: "We normally get one call a day about a person being scammed. THere will be a job for some sort of scam."

YOUNG children at a North Bersted preschool and their staff are really excited about the Beat the Street project.

Box number one in the initiative is sited outside their premises of Dizzy Ducklings at Bersted Park Community Centre and are determined to boost their team points as a result.

Preschool manager Claire Tarrant noticed the box fastened to a lamp post next to the playground and quickly set up Team Dizzy Ducklings.

THey began in 80th place out of 92 but an 11-mile bike ride by the staff boosted their points as they found 18 of the boxes on their route to soar up the scoreboard to 62nd place out of 97.

Mrs Tarrant said: "We followed this when the Dizzy Ducklings staff and children went for a Beat the Street walk, pictured below.

"We started at box number one outside the community centre and headed out to box number two outside Barton's Primary School. It was lovely to be walking across to the school where lots of the children will be transitioning to in September and for years to come. What a great opportunity to do something that is promoting a healthy lifestyle, getting outside to exercise and have fun at the same time."

Mills provided plenty of flour power for town The landmark buildings were a familiar sight along the coastline in Victorian times THIS week we are going to look more at bygone history. Windmills were introduced into England in the 1150s and the earliest mention in Sussex is in 1155. At one time within the county, there were approximately 200 windmills but this number had dwindled by the 1980s to less than 30 remaining and mostly in ruins.

THe golden age of windmills was definitely in the 18th and early 19th centuries, when bread formed part of most people’s diet.

However, with the arrival of steam in the mid1800s their demise began.

Moving first to Felpham, where it meets the sea at what is Admiralty Gardens today. Here was the White Mill.

THis was a seven-storey white stone smock mill, where the sweeps (sails) could make the 27hp which was needed to drive the four pairs of stones. THis mill stood for about 80 years until the 1880s. THe first miller was Mr Haynes. THe last was Henry Hobbs, who occupied the position for some 30 years.

It shows the mill as derelict and it was eventually claimed by the sea and its ruins demolished in 1879. THe brick and stone from the base of the White Mill was re-used in the building of the stables and garden walls of Turret House.

Another in Felpham was the Black Mill. One of the earliest records is of William Cosens in 1801 purchasing an area named Mill Field for the sum of £555.

By 1806 William had built a wooden post mill, which stood on a brick base and could be rotated, so that the complete construction revolved and the sails faced any available wind.

THis mill remained in the Cosens family as it was passed from William to his wife Elizabeth and then on to their niece, Louisa Gray, in 1856. However, Louisa sold the mill in 1862 to Edward Stubbington, whose address was 7 Spencer Terrace, Bognor, for the sum of £1,050.

In fact, Edward had been leasing and running the mill since 1856 as a tenant, repaying the loan in instalments. When Louisa died in 1863, her executors continued the arrangements with Edward, although he now became the owner of the mill.

By 1866, Edward had become a developer, selling plots of Mill Field. THe first five houses were built facing Felpham Road and he made a right of way to the rear of the houses, which today is Havelock Road. Records show that the new owner of the mill in the 1870s was Charles Digwell and the last known owner in 1884 was Henry Reynolds, until it apparently failed around1887.

By the 1890s it had lost its sails, but remained on the skyline until it was demolished in 1907.

THe area in this vicinity, which ran down to the sea, had become known as the Felpham Mill Building Estate. Around 1884, Henry Reynolds was offering plots within the estate by auction and these were described as 'most of the plots have a depth of 85ft and offer the most charming sites for small villas which are now in great demand, those now in the course of completion being already let. Small houses at rentals varying from £15 to £20 per annum will readily sell for occupation'.

Mill Field was subsequently marked out into five roads, namely, Havelock, Canning, Clyde, Outram and Sea View.

One name that has become associated with this area is that of ‘Snook.’ Elizabeth Cosens, in 1830, made the mill over to a Matthew Snook as security for the sum of £500. However, by 1857 Matthew Snook needed the sum of £500 so sold the security. He is believed to have been a relative of Henry Snook who is best remembered with his greengrocery business.

THe shop owner, Henry Reynolds, sold the property to Amey’s, the Petersfield Brewer. In 1907, Amey’s built a new general store and off licence, using the bricks from the demolished mill as the foundation stones.

Henry Snook eventually took this over in 1916. As late as 1966, the buildings were still called THe Old Mill Off-licence and the advertising board outside showed a windmill.

Today, of course, this corner of the village is referred to as Snooks Corner.

THere were other mills in the locality, including one at the seaward end of Nyewood Lane on the shoreline between Park Road.

THis can be seen on many early pictures of the area.

THe tower mill had a revolving cap that

turned canvas-covered sails into the wind.

It was built in the 1920s and was owned by Henry Martin.

THe clay ironstone was called septaria, or kidney-rack, because it was veined with semitransparent calcite. THe poor of the parish and fishermen dug this raw material from beneath the sands.

By the 1880s, the mill was taken over

by THomas Norris and his son, and they converted it into a flour mill. THe mill was eventually closed at the end of that decade and had been demolished by the turn of the century.

When the mill was pulled down, a curious metal sign in the shape of a fox was discovered.

It was thought at the time it might have come from Bognor’s ancient smuggler tavern, THe Fox. Another mill was that of the Black Tower Mill in Nyetimber. It was built in the early 1840s, with one of the earliest millers being William Adams for several years. THere was a succession of millers, but with the advent of the First World War and damaged machinery, the life of the mill came to an end.

THe base continued to be used as a carpenter’s shop, but the sweeps were damaged in 1927 when they were struck by lightning. THe mill remained neglected for many years and a fire nearly destroyed it on June 14, 1962.

On the site of the Black Tower Mill in 1981, the Rev John Maynard dug the ‘first spit for the foundation’ of a newly created construction of retirement homes.

An artist's impression and progress reports were being included in the local press the next year on a regular basis and 52 retirement flats now surround the four-storey mill tower the windmill is a Grade II-listed building.

Ryan Maskell's side sit second in Sussex Division Two, looking to keep up their five-match unbeaten run.

Rugby CHICHESTER RFC returned from their summer break last week as preparations for the new season gets underway at Oaklands Park.

THe Blues had an inconsistent season last year, recovering from a poor start to eventually register a midtable finish in the London One South division.

Paul Colley, the club's director of rugby, will be keen to see Blues push on and secure a top half finish in 2019/20 - but they will face a tough start to the season.

THe new campaign will see Chi start with a Sussex derby as league newboys Horsham make the short trip to Oaklands Park on September 7.

THen, a week later, Blues will have another derby, this time against local rivals Havant.

THe return fixture against their Hampshire neighbours comes on December 21, just before the festive break.

THe other league newcomers are all London-based sides, with KCS Old Boys, HAC Rugby and Belsize Park joining the competitive division.

THe club are currently looking for players to join their three senior sides as preseason training gets underway.

Trampolining DRAGONFLYERS' Daniel Boon became the latest member of the Bognor-based club to wear the regional kit when he represented the Southern region for the first time at regional team finals in Birmingham last month.

THe Barclaycard Arena hosted qualifying representatives from 12 regions throughout the UK in the sport of trampoline, tumbling and DMT. Boon jumped exceptionally over both routines in the men's NDP 2 age 13 plus men trampoline event.

Not only did he gain crucial points for the South with his seventh place in what was a painfully close competition, he also gained qualification into NDP individual national finals to be held in Coventry later this month.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are very proud of the progress Daniel has made and aim to prepare him for national league next year."

Sids search for a new boss begins SIDLESHAM FC are on the hunt for a new manager - despite the start of the season being less than a month away.

THe SCFL Division One side made a successful return to senior football last term, sealing a mid-table finish as Steve Bailey put together a talented team of young players.

But, the off-season has seen a number of changes at the Memorial Ground with Bailey now stepping up to take over the reins as chairman.

THat has left a hole in the dugout - a gap that Sids are looking to fill as they look to continue to progress on the pitch.

THe new manager will not have long to put their stamp on the new side - as pre-season fixtures get underway tomorrow with a home match against local rivals and SCFL Division Two side Bosham (3pm).

THat is followed by a visits from East Preston (July 9), Epsom & Ewell (July 13), Fareham Town (July 16), Nyetimber Pirates (July 20) and Littlehampton Town (July 27).

With Bailey still involved, a number of last season's squad are expected to stay involved with the Sids.

Simon Whall, who joined the club last

summer, has been confirmed as first team head coach for up coming season. Simon has a wealth of playing experience at Wembley, Hayes and Chertsey.

Down the road at Selsey, former Sids boss Daren Pearce is making quiet preparations for the year ahead.

THe focus for the Blues is very much on youth with Pearce tasked with bringing on a number of younger players through the ranks at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium.

Pearce has already signalled that a number of the successful under 18s side, who won the champion of champions trophy across Sussex last season, will be involved with the first team squad when it gets underway.

SCFL Division Two side Bosham have also began their preparations for the new season with boss Tony Hancock overseeing training.

THe Robins will be joined by 14 other sides in the league next season. Roffey - who finished third last season - have been promoted while Westfield have transferred.

THey will be replaced by St Francis Rangers, who folded as a Division One side last season, and TD Shipley, who were runners-up in last season's West Sussex Premier Division.

Dabba returns - with Chi City DABBA will be back in the dugout next season - although it will be on the side of Chichester City rather than Bognor Regis Town.

Darn Killpartrick, the former Rocks coach, took 12 months away from the non-league game last year after more than a decade at Nyewood Lane.

After a year spending his Saturdays recharging his batteries, the England Colleges coach has agreed to link up with Bostik South East newcomers Chi as they look to establish themselves as step four.

He will link up with manager Miles Rutherford, assistant Graham Gee and coach Daniel Potter, who he works with closely at Chichester College.

Dabba will not have long before he takes on his former club as the SCFL Premier champions meet Sussex Senior Cup winners Bognor in the Sussex Community Shield at Lancing's Culver Road on July 30.

Chi's players returned to training last week and look to be in good shape as they head into uncharted territory.

THeir pre-season preparations start tomorrow when they head to play an Isle of Wight representative XI. Next weekend they head to Arundel before matches at Christchurch (July 16), Hamble (July 20) and AFC Portchester (July 23).

Bostik Premier side Worthing visit Oaklands Park on July 27 before preparations are completed on August 3 at Rutherford's former side Moneyfields.

As well as changes on the pitch, Chi have also worked hard to continue to build off the pitch too.

Andy Bell has stepped up to be club chairman with Ashley Clack taking a step back to be vice chairman as the club look to continue to build the club at men's, women's and junior level.

Meanwhile, the club will be starting to visit local businesses to talk commercial sponsorship in the coming days.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea believes he has the right man for the job as the club enters a season of rebuilding.

THe Lions had a disappointing campaign last term, finishing in the bottom half of the SCFL Premier and losing joint manager Richie Hellen along the way.

THings got worse at Nyetimber Lane when the other man in the dugout, Tom Simmons, departed for personal reasons one week before the start of pre-season.

Shea responded quickly and, after receiving some high-quality applications, opted for former East Preston manager Bob Paine.

Shea said: “We’re all really happy with the appointment. “Obviously it was a difficult time to find a new manager that late in as it means we are six weeks behind everyone else. “It’s fair to say the week before the start of pre-season is not ideal but I’m very happy it’s all sorted. “We had a good night interviewing and Bob and his team were clear cut appointments so I’m feeling pretty hunky dory about things.�

During that time he steered them to promotion from SCFL Division One at the first time of asking before two mid-table finishes at step five.

Now he joins a club which have in recent years been pushing for the top five and cup finals.

Paine is joined at the club by Craig Stuart and Tom Henton, both of whom were part of his coaching staff at Lashmar.

THe trio have already got straight on to business, overseeing a number of pre-season training sessions with their new squad.

Shea expects his new manager, who also was a successful coach with Worthing’s youth set up, to spend time rebuilding the core of the squad.

He said: “We are in transition stage, there’s no denying that. “Bob’s first priority is to bring some stability back to the club. THere will be a lot of change player-wise so stability is a good word. “He had already made it clear that youngsters will be key to that. He will be running the under 23s from the 18s and is quite adamant that turning to youth will be our approach moving forward."

Rocks ready for pre-season visit by Havant

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce said he's looking forward to seeing his new-look squad get their first taste of action after the summer break.

THe Rocks squad returned to pre-season last week with the players being put through their paces by coach Robbie Blake and fitness coach Neil Cockcroft.

THe players will not have long to turn their sprints on the South Downs into match action with National South side Havant & Waterlooville coming to Nyewood Lane on Tuesday (7.45pm).

For Pearce it is a chance to pitch his new squad into action against strong opponents who are looking to return to National League level after relegation last term.

It kick starts a busy pre-season which also includes a visit from League One Portsmouth (July 16, 7.45pm) before trips to Horndean (July 24, 7.45pm) and Gosport Borough (August 2, 7.45pm).

Pearce said: "Havant is the first one we have and for both clubs it will be about seeing where we are with players.

"Obviously they are one step above us and, despite both being promoted into the National South at the same time, we both went in opposite directions.

"THey have had a lot of change

round the club with a new manager and investment across the board. So, the match will give us a chance to see where we are and what more we can do.

"THe result does not matter but it is important for us to see how people manage in various phases of the game and will give us an idea what more we need to do to get ready for the first competitive match in a months time."

Unlike in previous years when the Rocks have not finalised a playing squad of 15 until days before the start of the campaign, there's a healthy number of players signed on ahead of a busy Bostik Premier season.

Former Rock James Crane was the first to sign, returning from Worthing, while ex-Pompey duo Dan Smith and Freddie Read have joined on permanent deals after a successful loan spells last season.

Among those to recommit are last term's top scorer Jimmy Muitt, skipper Harvey Whyte, Doug Tuck Keaton Wood and Chad Field.

THe addition of playmaker Stuart Green from AFC Totton also gives creativity in the heart of the park.

Pearce is also confident of bringing in some youngsters from Pompey, with Brad Lethbridge a possible returnee.

And new club sponsor Dominic Reynolds said he cannot wait to see the side that manager Jack Pearce is building at Nyewood Lane take to the pitch next month.

Reynolds, who is the managing director of Reynolds Furniture, has been chairman of the club for the past 12 years.

And, after his businesses name won the auction to be the Rocks main sponsor for the upcoming Bostik Premier season, he said there was every reason to be brimming with confidence going in to the new campaign.

Reynolds' confidence comes as Pearce made a number of important signings so far over the summer including recruiting striker Dan Smith and midfielder Freddie Read from Pompey while fans' favourite Stu Green is returning to Nyewood Lane from AFC Totton.

He said: "It was great to see the Rocks win the Sussex Senior Cup last season and we hope to build on that success.

"Jack and Robbie seem to have done a lot of early business in terms of bringing players to the club as well as keeping key players, the likes of Jimmy Muitt, Doug Tuck and Harvey Whyte, so there are lots of reasons to go into the campaign with a degree of optimism, perhaps - dare I say it - even confidence."

THe chance for Reynolds Furniture to bid for the sponsorship arose when businessmen Victor Coutin, the MD at GardX, donated the prize back to the Nye Camp outfit after he won it in the sponsors' draw.

Reynolds said: "As a company we are

absolutely delighted to be the main sponsors for the forthcoming season.

"We very much look forward to a successful relationship both on and off the pitch. On a personal level, and as a long-standing fan, I am really excited by the prospect of the new season with our new signings."

Reynolds Furniture and the Nyewood Lane outfit are no strangers with the 152-year-old business a long-time backer of the club.

THe firm first had their names emblazoned on the team's shirts a quarter of a century ago - something that Reynolds remembers fondly.

He said: "We have a photo of me, my dad and my brothers with the team when we were shirt sponsors for the first time 25 years ago. Now we can look forward to a new team picture with our branding on the shirts and we're really chuffed.�

Q&A with Rocks manager Jack Pearce

NEXT week the Rocks will return to action.

No one is more excited than Jack Pearce, who is about to start his 50th season involved with the club.

Ahead of pre-season fixtures getting underway next week, Jack sat down with the Post for an extended Q&A ahead of the new season. Here's part one.

Jack, how's the summer been for you?

Well as you can imagine there's lots going on always.

I said at the start of summer that building the squad was the most important task.

So far, everything has been going quite well as we have made some good signings.

We also have quite a number of very interesting younger players who are coming through and doing quite well in training THere are between half a dozen to ten players who will not be known to many who have really come along which is extremely encouraging for the club.

How we get them involved is something we will need to think about.

But you cannot do everything with young unproven players and we still need to improve in certain areas.

It's like putting a jigsaw together and, as anyone who has done one recently knows, trying to find the last few pieces is the most difficult part of completing the puzzle.

Does that mean your emphasis will be on younger players this season?

I've never been big on age; the priority is trying to find good players that want to play for you and we have managed to do that so far.

and neither had played a full game for us before then.

You do have to have some experience with them. But if you can find a good player with experience then that is someone worth holding on to.

How is pre-season training shaping up so far?

We have had two sessions and both have gone well.

THey've been well attended and Robbie and Neil have been pushing them on the fitness.

It's no matter how good you are, if you are not getting to the ball first then football is a difficult game.

You either need to be physically quicker or sharper and that’s where training comes in.

THere's nothing worse than being in a match and hoping an opponent does not run you again. But then there is no better feeling than with ten minutes to play you are still fresh and able to do what you need to do for the team.

You've recently held trials to try and uncover some new players - how did that go?

THe lads did ever so well in extremely hot conditions and we sincerely thank each and every one of them for attending and giving their all.

A trials match is never ideal to demonstrate a player's capabilities because of a number of factors, including having to adapt to positions for the purposes of balance, perhaps a certain lack of cohesion from not knowing your team-mates and maybe even some nerves creeping in.

But overall there was lots to like and we saw a few players who we will speak to about taking things forward and take it from there.

Overall, it has proved to be a productive exercise and one which we would look at repeating next summer.
