From Chef’s Special Board Available Monday, Wednesday and Friday COASTAL residents across Bognor Regis coast in a changing climate. (Excluding Cllr Paul Dendle only (C, Arundel) said: Bank Holidays) will continue to be protected against 12noon-2.30pm flooding. THe pledge was made by Arun District Council's leader, Cllr Dr James Walsh, after claims from opposition councillors some areas of the coastline could be abandoned to the sea. Cllr Dr Walsh said at Wednesday's full council meeting the row was artificial scaremongering for political purposes. "Can I say in the strongest possible terms that the cabinet has no intention, this council has no intention, of giving up the sea defences in the inhabitated areas of the Arun coastline? "All the villages are protected and will continue to be protected," he said. "So, please let the message go out loud and clear that there is no intention of abandoning the sea defences or residential areas in the Arun district. "And the measures that have been taken in Pagham in the past, if they need to be taken anywhere else, will be taken. THat's what we have to do. "Please stop frightening the public that their homes are going to be flooded. THey are not if it's in the power of this council." THe argument began over a report by Arun's engineering services manager, Roger Spencer, to the council's cabinet of senior councillors last month. Mr Spencer stated the council might want the option of abandoning certain parts of the district's coast in response to a report by the government's committee on climate change about managing the
"THat's a fairly serious statement that an officer would make to cabinet. "THe cabinet went on to wax lyrical about climate emergency but didn't actually deal with the detail. "THe detail was that basically an officer, who had been defending the coastline in places like Pagham and in places Standard plate only like Climping, we now have size a situation where we could have coastal areas being sacrificed. "Can we get a categorical assurance that residents of places like Pagham and places like Climping will not be sacrificed?" Cllr Shaun Gunner (C, Rustington E) said the cabinet report did not respond to the threat of climate change. Available 9.00am - 11.30am "I am worried that this report will be used in a way to selectively stop coastal defences in our community. "THe report is not about managing the coastline but not managing it. Road, Chichester, West Sussex, PO20 Bognor "What does this mean for residents? What does it mean for businesses? It is Tel. 01243 756170 BrickKilnGardenCentre not clear what the cost to residents and businesses will be," he said. Cllr David Huntley (I, Pagham) said: "It's very important not to let the sea roll up over the beach crest. THe next place it will probably stop will be the A27. So, it's important to defend our coastal communities." As reported, Arun has undertaken a long-running series of schemes to protect Pagham beach from erosion.
