Dozens of homeowners and tenants, pictured above, in Applegate Way and its adjoining roads have called for action.

They believe emergency vehicles, like fire engines and ambulances, will be unable to get past their crowded junction with Westloats Lane.

One of them, Pat Pond, said West Sussex

County Council’s timescale of nearly two years for a possible solution was too long.

“This situation is very dangerous. The police are aware. There is going to be a terrible accident there one day with children also crossing from school.

“Not to forget the emergency services would not get through to anyone on the estate if there was a fire without smashing their way through cars and vans," she said.

“We have a two-way adopted road with room for one small car to pass. A year to perhaps be decided…another year to not know if it will be implemented. It is unacceptable,” she said.

She pointed out the nearby junction of Gravits Lane and Westloats Lane had a raised surface and double yellow lines installed by the county council in 2017.

NEWLY built fencing has made it impossible for a major Felpham prom event to take place at its usual site.

Tomorrow's Fun on the Prom has in the past been held on two patches of grass along the seafront. But the new railings on the western half have prompted a rethink.

The fence was erected by Arun District Council on the public greensward to reduce the increasing number of dogs fouling on the strip of grass.

While there has always been a low wall, the addition of a metal railing has caused a number of residents to complain.

Cllr Dave Smart, chairman of Felpham Parish Council, said it ensured the public would still be able to enjoy the family occasion even if they were disgruntled by the fencing.

"The fence has obviously caused problems, but it won't actually affect the event," he said.

"We have condensed Fun on the Prom on to the eastern greensward.

"In the past, we have used both areas, but after a few small changes we have condensed it and it will be fine.

"Over the years, the whole event has changed and evolved. We hope this year's will be bigger and better than ever."

Fun on the Prom runs from 1pm, opening with hours of children's

entertainment, then music on the stage, and a spectacular fireworks display at 9.45pm to provide an eye-catching finale.

A number of residents have complained about what they believe was insufficient consultation before the fence was put in.

One of the residents, Mo Cook, said she was aware of people's unhappiness about the fence.

She said: “The memorial benches which are now behind the barriers have been dedicated by friends and relatives of people who once sat there and enjoyed the views.

“It was a happy friendly place, part of a friendly bay on a friendly seafront.

Mo and other residents want the barriers either removed or moved in line with the entrance gates to the greensward.

She said: "The public should have access to the grass and memorial benches. Arun, or whoever installed them, took a diabolical liberty when they closed off the public greensward.

“They restricted access to memorial benches donated to the public and ruined the view of the bay.

“I am totally 'dischuffed', disappointed and angry that we are being treated with such disdain.”

An Arun officer told her: “The erection of the fence is part of a package of measures to reduce dog fouling, which include continuing enforcement patrols, enhanced dog control signage and provision of dog poo bins.” See page 17

Arun looks at reducing carbon emissions before it's too late A CLIMATE emergency declaration was just one of the green measures approved by Arun District Council.

Greener government planning measures were accepted by the full council and included building more renewable energy and water-saving technology.

Cllr Isabel Thurston said: "We need a full and considered policy on climate change. We are looking forward to playing a full part in these discussions over the next few months."

"The Government has declared a climate emergency, and many local councils have followed. However, there

is no point unless you can put some realistic targets in place.

“We are going to feel the effects severely in the years to come unless we start investing now in strategies to mitigate and slow our carbon emissions.

We need to look at reducing carbon emissions in all ways over the next ten years. This applies to everything we do, from where its money is invested to how its contractors operate.

“We need to see more creative approaches and we need to put pressure upwards on West Sussex County Council to invest in public transport, for example."

Mr Turner, a deputy Lord Lieutenant for West Sussex, was among the guests at a special cake-cutting ceremony to mark the town's 90 years of Regis.

He told those at the event at Bognor Regis Museum: "I would like to thank Greg Burt and the local history society for organising today. It's a super spread and a lovely cake. Huge congratulations on 90 years.

"I've booked the date for 10 years' time but I don't guarantee it."

Mr Turner cut the key-shaped golden iced sponge cake, which measured 18ins long and up to 9ins wide, and was embossed with '1929-2019' and 'The Royal Key To Health' to mark the

occasion.

Mr Burt, the local history society's chairman, said at last Friday's event: "Today is a very special day for the town. It's good we are marking this occasion.

"There is a quite of lot comment about divisiveness and what separates us.

"Whatever we think of Bognor Regis and we appreciate it's not perfect - we are all happy to live here and proud to put Bognor Regis in our addresses."

The chairmen of Arun, Bersted, Felpham and Aldwick councils were present as well, along with Bognor Regis' town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall.

Last Friday's occasion marked the exact date West Sussex County Council sanctioned the change of the town's name from Bognor to Bognor Regis.

The request from the former urban district council for King George V's 13-week convalescence in Craigweil House, Aldwick, from a serious lung illness to be formally recognised was granted by the Home Office on June 1.

But it needed the county council to legally agree to the change under the Local Government Act 1894. This happened on July 26, 1929.

Earlier this year, the local history society painted '90 Years of Regis 19292019' on the museum's frontage in West Street and hung a large key underneath its sign to further commemorate the anniversary.

Visitors to the museum also have the chance this year to win a miniature key if they find 12 golden keys among its displays.

AN EMPLOYEE'S heart attack prompted a Walberton charity to set out to install a potentially lifesaving device.

The learning disability service, Hft, secured funding for the defibrillator at its premises in Freeman Close after the medical emergency.

Jeff Hawkins, who has been a support worker at Hft Sussex for 11 years, began to feel unwell during a shift in November, 2017.

His colleagues, who were all first aid trained, quickly picked up his condition and alerted the emergency services.

Jeff made a full recovery and the charity's staff began to think about how a defibrillator could be a vital piece of equipment for those at their service and the general public nearby.

The charity successfully bid for funding from the Walberton, West Barnham and Bersted Poor Fund.

This distributes grants or supports to people in the area.

Sarah Shallis, the operations manager at Hft, said: "We're delighted to have obtained a device which could save vital minutes, and ultimately a life, if someone experiences a cardiac arrest.

"Situated in the heart of the community, the defibrillator will provide staff, people we support and members of the public with important reassurance that help is at hand in case of an emergency.

"The generous grant of ÂŁ2,980 that we received also enabled us to fund a new adult changing table for our supported changing area and some equipment for our sensory area.

"We have longstanding links with the Walberton parish and a number of people we support are part of the church community. We're very grateful to them."

The automated external defibrillator is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.

It is a vital part of improving the chance of survival in cases of cardiac arrest.

The Rev Tim Ward, the vicar of Walberton, said: "We're able to support a small number of people every year with things like bills and the cost of major items such as defibrillator.

"We find that this assistance is much appreciated and have been very happy to supply a piece of vital equipment to an important local service."

Hft Sussex supports more 70 people with learning disabilities locally and employs 60 members of staff.

They offer person-centred services ranging from residential care to supported living at home - from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day.

Hft is a national charity which supports more than 2,900 adults with learning disabilities across England and Wales.

` MP chosen by PM NICK GIBB, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, is in the political record books.

Mr Gibb has been re-appointed as schools minister by the new Conservative Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. The decision confirmed Mr Gibb's status as the longest-serving minister outside the cabinet in the various administrations since 2010.

He is also probably the country's longest-serving schools minister.

Mr Gibb, who has been the town's MP since 1997, said: "It is a real honour to be asked by the Prime Minister to continue to serve as the schools minister in Boris Johnson's government.

"I will be continuing to deliver on our agenda to raise standards in schools so that we give every child the knowledge and ability to succeed in an exciting post-Brexit global future."

Mr Gibb was first appointed as the schools minister in May, 2010, but was replaced by Liberal Democrat David Laws two years later as part of the Tory-Lib Dem coalition.

He returned as schools minister in July, 2014, and has served under three prime ministers - David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson - and five education secretaries.

Objections to homes plans UNANIMOUS opposition to more homes in Pagham has been agreed by councillors.

Pagham Parish Council’s planning committee on Tuesday decided to oppose proposals for nine dwellings in a paddock at the back of the Inglenook Hotel site.

They said the scheme by Anthony Honour of eight houses and a bungalow was an unneighbourly development, particularly to the occupiers of neighbouring Mill Farm, and they would prefer bungalows to be built.

They were also concerned about the safety of the access from Pagham Road next to the hotel.

The traffic light system which would be used to control vehicles along the access road to the housing also prompted worries from committee members because of the potential for the signals to be ignored.

The councillors also pointed out the 4,000sq m site was outside the built-up area boundary created by Arun District Council, which will decide the housing application.

Committee chairman Cllr Dawn Hall said: “It would be better if these homes were bungalows. There would be less impact on the residents of Mill Farm.

“I don’t like the traffic light system which has been proposed.”

Cllr David Huntley said it was unfortunate the housing could not be linked with the new homes which had been built immediately to the south.

“That would have allowed the access to be through there so drivers didn’t have to squeeze past the Inglenook Hotel to get out,” he said.

Cllr Peter Atkins said: “I oppose this scheme on the grounds of access and in the interests of safety more than anything else.”

But the committee raised no objections to a linked application for listed building consent to allow demolition work to take place on part of the Grade-II listed hotel.

The intention is to knock down a modern side extension and 2.25m of boundary wall to enable a new junction to be created for the entrance to the proposed homes.

Cllr Huntley said: “The effect of this will be positive, rather than negative."

Cllr Atkins said: “This is part of a modern building at the back of the hotel which is a function room.

“This work is to make sure there is room for a car coming off Pagham Road and another coming on to the road without any difficulty before it goes down to one car width with the traffic lights to get through the narrow bit to the estate.”

The debate took place after some 20 Mill Farm residents had attended a presentation by the scheme’s planning agents, Whaleback.

They spoke about their hostility to the plans. Mill Farm Residents’ Association chairman Jane Collins said: “We are a force to be reckoned with. We are not a caravan park full of holiday-makers, as I think you have been led to be believed."

Royal visitor creates lasting legacy during charity visit SOCIAL enterprises to support adults with learning difficulties impressed a royal visitor to a charity base.

The Duke of Gloucester was invited to see work carried out at the Aldingbourne Country Centre by the Aldingbourne Trust.

Centre general manager Peter Stanley led the tour of the premises. He said: “It was an honour to provide a guided tour our facilities and introduce The Duke of Gloucester to the people we support.

“He appeared very interested in our charity and took the time to engage in conversation with staff and the people we support.”

A feature of the Duke’s visit saw him plant an alder tree close to the country centre’s orchard.

A trust spokesman said: “The tree was grown from a seedling by one of the people we support and has been planted to eventually grow and create a sheltered resting area for future visitors.”

The Duke was welcomed to the centre on Friday by Mr Stanley and taken on a tour of the recently officially opened £4m Quarry Building at the centre.

Mr Stanley highlighted the facilities and specially designed features of the venue at the site in Blackmill Lane.

In particular, he emphasised the building’s design to promote sustainability and reduce its future environmental impact.

After meeting some of the centre’s staff, the Duke was given an escorted tour of the outdoor facilities at the site.

They included the sand and water play area and the new indoor soft play area.

Visiting the wood recycling enterprise and furniture restoration project, he was greeted by wood recycling enterprise lead Brian Alden and was pleased to meet some of the people, who can also be autistic, supported by the trust.

The Duke finished his visit by meeting some of the charity’s trustees, volunteers and people it helps during a light lunch in the Quarry conference room.

Beach campaign starts ACTION to improve beaches along the Bognor Regis area shoreline has been launched.

Arun District Council has joined forces with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to celebrate the area's coastline. #BeautyOfTheBeachArun is aimed at helping people to play their part in keeping the shores of the district as clean as possible to help to improve the quality of the bathing water.

Arun has installed six solar-powered Bigbelly bins between Middleton and Bognor Regis in the past few months. They compact waste and automatically send emails when they're full.

The council has also trialled recycling bins along the seafront, installed extra dog poo bins in Elmer and Middleton, increased litter and dog fouling patrols and launched a poster campaign.

Cllr Matt Stanley, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said: "Many people are unaware that the quality of bathing water is affected by many things, including litter and plastic dropped along the shore, and animals such as dogs and seabirds

The Aldingbourne Trust is an awardwinning charity with headquarters in the centre just north of the A27 that wants people with learning disabilities and/ or autism to have the same chances as everyone else to live independent lives.

A council spokesman said members of the public could help to support the push for cleaner beaches by putting their litter in the bins provided, recycling their plastic bottles and binning their scraps rather than feeding them to seagulls.

Dog owners have also been urged to remember Arun's 'it only takes a minute to bag it and bin it' slogan from last year when their pet fouls.

The campaign's first of four fun beach clean events, with Spirit FM, took place last Friday. The event featured a fun litter pick and a pebble decorating competition. Among the prizes were a family day pass to Butlin's and a family swimming pass to either the Arun Leisure Centre or Littlehampton Wave.

Future beach cleans will take place from 11am1pm next Thurday at Bognor Regis, 11am-1pm on August 20 at West Beach in Aldwick and at Felpham from 11am-3pm on August 31.

Fellow resident Linas Mikolaitis said: “If you’re driving up to the junction, and you meet someone going the other way, you have to back down all the way or go back on to Westloats Lane.”

Pendleton Place resident Carla Hardy said the road’s proximity to The Regis School made the safety situation worse.

“The kids have got their earphones on or are on their phones and they don’t look when they cross the road,” she said.

As well as the petition, Mr and Mrs Pond have contacted their county councillor, David Edwards, and one of their town and district councillors, Sandra Daniells, to seek further help.

Ben Whiffin, the county council’s Arun area highway manager, has told Mrs Pond the junction would be assessed against the council’s criteria for safety works.

“The proposal has been taken as far as it can at this stage and has to wait to be considered at the November, 2019, meeting (of the council’s Joint Western Arun Area Committee)," he wrote.

“It may be that the committee members decide not to prioritise this scheme, but clearly I can’t pre-empt what schemes they will prioritise.”

The lack of injury accidents at the Applegate Way/Westloats Lane junction in the past five years showed drivers were navigating it safely, he added.

` Peas please in Bognor Regis JUDGES couldn’t pick just one winner in a competition for this year’s Bognor Regis in Bloom.

The Edward Bryant School and Happytime Preschool came joint first with their winning pea plants.

All the children were involved throughout the growing process.

They each documented their growing journey through photographs - from potting the plants all the way through to the final peas.

Rebecca Vervecken, the town mayor's secretary and the Bognor Regis in Bloom committee clerk, said: “It was extremely hard to choose a winner.

"In the end, the judges decided there should be joint winners.

“Bognor Regis in Bloom would also like to give a mention to all the other entrants who did fantastically well.”

These were the gardening club at Bartons Primary School, the early years at Nyewood C of E Infant school, Stepping Stone Nursery’s jellyfish class, starfish class and angelfish class and The Village Preschool.

“What was especially noted this year was that a lot of the teachers happily admitted they had also learned lots along the way, and their enthusiasm was as prominent as the children,” Rebecca said.

“This is exactly why we do this competition!”

Pam makes garden pledge KIND-HEARTED Felpham resident Pam Evans is to open her garden again.

Pam raised more than £200 at last Saturday's occasion - but it was marred by her absence because of ill-health and pouring rain.

"I will be holding the event again this summer. I know quite a few people didn't turn up because they said it was raining so much," she said.

She held the event, the latest of several,

to raise money for St Wilfrid's Hospice at Chichester but her hopes of a successful day were marred because of a problem with her legs. This caused her to have to go to St Richard's Hospital.

As reported, the parish council's bid to seek a new decision about the outline planning permission granted for up 400 homes south of Summer Lane was rejected by Mrs Justice Andrews.

But parish council clerk Nicola Swann told councillors at their meeting on Tuesday: "We are waiting to hear if we can appeal against the judicial review decision."

Mrs Justice Andrews ruled last month the parish council had failed to prove its case against the advice given by Arun District Council to councillors about the impact of the housing on the heritage of Pagham.

If she had backed Arun, the approval would have been overturned and district councillors obliged to consider the plans again.

R and R Pet Services will be selling pet supplies with little or no packaging at Felpham's village post office in Felpham Road on Thursday.

It will give customers the chance to bring their own containers and buy the amount of goods they want for their favourite animals.

On sale will be loose bird seed, pet bedding and home-made dog treats as well as home-grown forage for small pets.

Family fun day success at centre to help heart charity EVERYONE had the chance to try something new at a charity day in Felpham.

The family fun day, which ran from 10am-4pm on Saturday, was organised

by Arun Leisure Centre.

Activities ran throughout the day to help fund-raise for the British Heart Foundation, Freedom Leisure's chosen charity.

An Arun Leisure Centre spokesman said: "It was a great atmosphere.

"There was a diverse range of activities, from tennis to fencing, judo to swimming.

"People even had the chance to try out synchronised swimming in one of our learner classes.

"We had taster sessions in the pool for

parents and babies, so they could try it out. For some of them it was their first time in the pool.

"There was a really great buzz among everyone. So many people tried out new activities. It was lovely to see.

"People had the chance to try something new that they might not have done if they hadn't had the opportunity.

"In the reception we had a static bike, with various people spending time on it to raise money.

"There were lots of cakes and a great book sale. Lots of people came to look.

"We had people staying for the whole day, just because there was so much for them to do.

Around 500 people attended the day,

everyone helping raise money for the cause.

"Some people came to try just one thing, while others were able to spend more time doing lots of activities.

"We had lots of regulars attending the day, faces that we recognised.

"At the same time, we also had lots of people who were new and just wanted the chance to try something new."

The public weren’t the only ones getting involved. Members of staff also did their bit, whether it was on the static bike, or getting soaked in the stocks.

A variety of free activities were on offer throughout the day, including tennis and badminton, fitness classes and inflatable sessions in the pool.

Bognor Regis road is a priority A TOP ten list of high-priority road improvements given to government will benefit Bognor Regis motorists.

The town's A259 link to Littlehampton has been chosen by Transport for the South East as among the most deserving schemes in the region.

Each of the projects costs between £20m and £50m and will be delivered by 2025 if funded is provided by the government.

Cllr Keith Glazier, chairman of Transport for the South East, said: "A high quality, reliable transport network is absolutely critical to our region's continued success.

"So it's vital we make a strong case for ongoing investment on behalf of people and businesses in the south east.

"By speaking with one voice to influence where and how money is spent in our region, Transport for the South East is already making a real difference for the 7.5m people who live

Transport for the South East was created last summer to improve the region's transport network and grow its economy.

It brings together representatives of 16 transport authorities and five local enterprise partnerships from the south coast to the London boundary and the Kent coast to Berkshire, the Isle of Wight and Hampshire.

It was asked by the government last December to agree its priorities for improving the major road network. This comprises the country's busiest and most economically important local authority A roads.

Shortlisted schemes for the south east were assessed against a range of national criteria as well as Transport for the South East's strategic objectives for the region. These are sustainable economic growth, improved quality of life and the environment.

` Council's warning RESIDENTS of Arun are being warned that they only have until August 9 to fill in their HEF forms.

The household enquiry form is part of Arun District Council’s annual canvass and is a vital way of ensuring that information on the electoral registration is up to date.

While it isn’t a registration form, not responding is against the law.

If Arun residents fail to do so before the cut-off date, a reminder will be issued and in some cases a personal canvasser will visit.

A council spokesperson said: “The HEF has been designed to be as easy as possible to complete.

“You only need to respond once, so choose the process that suits you best.

“Full details of how to do this are in the letter on the front of the form.

“If you haven’t had your HEF yet, please let us know.”

` End for Trisanto COUNCILLORS unanimously agreed to close a Bognor Regis housing company at a cabinet meeting on Monday.

Trisanto was set up by Arun District Council in 2017, but has had no start-up funding.

Cllr Dr Walsh said: “There were a number of objectives in setting up the company, principally around the delivery of council housing.

“This was very much at a time when restrictions existed on what could be done through the housing revenue account.

“That restriction has subsequently changed by central government.

“If the intention is not to provide this start-up funding, and this is not the intention of this administration, the proposal is to formally close the company .”

Cabinet members agreed that the decision should go to the full council in September.

As part of the Funshine Days, organised by Bognor Regis Town Council, children are invited to attend numerous fun events on the bandstand on Bognor Regis seafront.

A FOOTBALL fundraiser between The Rocks and one of their closest rivals has benefited a children’s charity.

The Sussex FA Community Shield game took place in Lancing on Tuesday, with Bognor Regis Town beating Chichester City 1-0.

Kate Hershkowitz, NSPCC community fundraising manager for Sussex, said: “We're pleased to have been the beneficiary for this community shield match in this special anniversary year.

"We are very grateful to the Sussex FA for their ongoing support of both our fundraising and safeguarding activities in Sussex.”

A COUNCILLOR has been told to read a council’s rules after complaints from Pagham residents about his behaviour.

Cllr Ricky Bower was supplied with a copy of the constitution of Arun District Council to ensure he was fully aware of how to proceed at meetings of its development control committee.

He was also ordered by the council’s assessment panel to provide written confirmation to its Conservative group leader, Cllr Terry Chapman, and Liz Futcher, its monitoring officer, that he understood the requirements.

The sanctions were proposed after the panel decided Cllr Bower had partly breached the council’s code of conduct of councillors’ behaviour, which govern their behaviour, at a stormy meeting he chaired to decide plans for 980 homes in Pagham.

The panel’s opinion was formally noted by Arun’s standards committee last Thursday. The members of the panel chaired by Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham E) stated Cllr Bower (C, East Preston) had broken the code when he adjourned the meeting last October.

` Country fair A GIANT helter skelter will be among the highlights of this year's Hotham Park Country Fair in Bognor Regis.

This weekend's event will see the park filled with plenty of attractions to provide two great days out for all the family.

Entertainer Bobby Davro will open fair tomorrow. It will be open from 11am-5pm both days and boasts an array of inflatables, like the 23ft high helter skelter, circus skills displays, animal displays, a horse-drawn wagon, live entertainment at the bandstand and a children's entertainer.

Craft skills and a host of eating and drinking outlets will also be present. Extra security will be in place after overnight vandalism marred last year's fair.

Free to enter, the fair is the biggest fundraiser of the year for its organiser, Hotham Park Heritage Trust, to help its role assisting Arun District Council to enhance the experience of visiting the park.

Students organise eco day fundraiser STUDENTS and staff raised money for their school eco team by wearing nonuniform.

Everyone at Felpham Community College was encouraged to bring in a £1 donation on the last day of term, in exchange for wearing their own clothes.

Since being created in the spring term, the eco team have made a positive impact on the school.

They have developed a number of projects.

The group aim to increase awareness of the importance of recycling, lead recycling initiatives and develop plans for creative arts up-cycling projects.

Students from across years have been invited to join the group, who have titled themselves ‘Wasteless’.

Rachel Greenland, associate assistant headteacher, and Year 7 leader said: “Wasteless want to educate and

encourage our school community to recycle more and think about the items they purchase and the packaging etc.

“As well as recycling, the team are doing a litter pick once a fortnight to keep the school campus clean.

“Since ‘Wasteless’ has started we have already seen a difference around school.

"We are looking forward to developing this further in the next academic year.

“The money raised with the nonschool uniform day will help fund the projects we are developing for next year.

“Well done and thank you to everyone on the team as their enthusiasm, ideas and the hard work they have put in has been brilliant. They are a credit to the college.”

There are now more than 50 members of the group, with numbers rising regularly.

Felpham Community College held the event on July 16 and 17.

It was specifically aimed at those students considering a career in medicine.

Year 12 student, Jak Smith, took part on the activity days.

He said: “It was an amazing experience and taught us valuable skills about dissection and surgical techniques.

"This will hopefully give us a head start for medical professions.”

Right royal celebrations to mark town's 90th anniversary of Regis GEORGE CHANT provided suitably regal connections to an event to celebrate the Regis in Bognor Regis.

George was among the special guests at a tea party staged by the town's mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, to mark the 90th anniversary of the granting of the royal suffix by King George V. George, who is also 90, said: "I believe I was named after the King. I was born in January, 1929, on Park Farm in Lagness and then lived in Steyne Street."

George was the only Bognorian among the some 20 guests at Friday's event and his current address of King George Court in the town also maintains his royal connections.

"It's a very good idea to have this tea party to celebrate 90 years of Regis," he said.

"I've always known the town as Bognor Regis. I've lived here all my life. I would like to see some of the old shops come back.

"I think people would like to the little shops, like we used to have. That's what people want."

All the guests at the tea party in a studio at the Regis Centre last Friday afternoon were aged at least 90. They enjoyed tea and cakes plus a gift bag each.

Entertainment was provided by singer Sarah Simmonds to get some of the guests on their feet and dancing, pictured right.

Seaward Court resident Joan Allison, 90, wore her tiara for the occasion. "The mayor said I should wear it and I'm on the top table, so I definitely feel special," she said.

Earlier in the day, the 90th anniversary celebrations had begun when Cllr Woodall

unveiled a blue plaque at Bognor Regis Town Hall in memory of the King's stay.

He revealed the plaque in front of a small group of people. It states: 'King George V bequeathed the title of Regis on the Town after convalescing here in 1929'.

Cllr Woodall spoke briefly about the King's time at Craigweil House and the fact Queen Mary attended churches in Pagham and South Bersted and shopped around the town.

The plaque is the fourth in a planned tenstrong heritage trail by the Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership Board.

Its chairman, Ken Blamires, said: "Bognor is the last town to have been given the Regis status.

"This plaque promotes its links to royalty, which go back to its founder, Sir Richard Hotham, and Princess Charlotte, who stayed at The Dome, soon afterwards.

"It's important that is recognised. It's something to be proud of."

The anniversary celebrations continued on Sunday afternoon with two musical events. Cllr Woodall hosted a concert at the Hotham Park bandstand with the Bognor Regis Concert Band.

Some 200 people attended to enjoy the two hours of music amid the trees in the sunshine. Among them was Littlehampton resident Jan Leightley. She said: "I enjoy these afternoons in the park. Three of us have come along today.

Cllr Woodall joined with the town crier, Jane Smith, to sing along to the Tony Christie hit, (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, at one point in the concert.

"I'm really pleased with the turnout. I've seen people come along, like what they're hearing and decide to sit down. It's been definitely worth doing," he said.

At the town's museum, Andrew and Pauline Wilkinson took along 81 of their collection of 1920s and 30s shellac records, plus gramophones, from that period.

The fascinating event recreated the music which Bognor's residents would have listened to when the King was on his 13-week convalescence from a lung illness.

Margaret Height was among the steady stream of visitors who travelled back in time when she called in on a family holiday from Leamington Spa. She said: "I was born in 1953 and I remember my parents having one of these (HMV 130 gramophone) with its heavy pick up head with a needle.

"As children, we were shown how put the needle in. We had to screw it in to keep it in place.

"It's wonderful to see this equipment in such good condition and sounding so well."

The 78rpm records included Tommy Handley and 20s singing superstars Layton & Johnstone.

` Aldwick designs A DOCUMENT to protect Aldwick from poorly designed buildings is set to be revised.

Parish councillors have agreed to look at hiring a specialist to rewrite the village design statement.

At the same time, they will find out how much money it will take to create a neighbourhood plan.

Their chairman, Cllr Lilian Richardson, said at Monday's meeting: "The village design statement no longer works. It really needs rewriting.

"If we are having a professional do that, we would to consider how much it will cost to write a neighbourhood plan and get through the very precise process needed to get it adopted."

Clair's a star on two wheels

A BOGNOR REGIS woman has been named as one of the country's most influential female cyclists.

Clair Goddard's inclusion in Cycling UK's 100 women in cycling is based on her use of her incredible weight loss transformation to inspire others.

She has joined Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey, TV presenter Angellica Bell and triple Olympic medallist Victoria Pendleton on the list to acknowledge their achievements in promoting women's cycling.

Their recognition follows the amazing work they did for Cycling Women's festival of cycling last month.

She joined HOOP (Helping Overcome Obesity Problems) after she passed out waiting for a doctor's appointment ten

years ago and was in hospital for three weeks.

Through HOOP, Clair started cycling and transformed her life by losing eight stone and encouraging others to join her in the saddle.

Clair, 54, said: "It's a great place to be with like-minded people who support each other without any judgment.

"Now, I don't think anything about cycling 40 or 50 miles. I love having the freedom to go out on my bike with great people. We never leave anyone behind."

Claire belongs to Cycle Bognor, organising rides to empower, support and help others regain their confidence and challenges attitudes towards obesity.

Her inspirational character was reflected in the heartfelt nominations

she received from the women she has helped.

One said: "Clair shows a real passion to feel positive and she gains strength from riding her bike to get the feel-good factor.

"Her passion and enthusiasm shines through and this has an effect on people who know her or meet her."

The women's festival of cycling was aimed at boosting the tiny three per cent of the women in the UK who cycle regularly.

Helen Cook, Cycling UK's head of engagement, said: "Congratulations to Clair for making it on to our 100 Women in Cycling for 2019.

"It's an incredible achievement and testimony to the tireless work she's done to raise the profile of women's cycling.

"Every woman on our list is an incredible ambassador for women's cycling, but sadly women remain underrepresented when it comes to everyday cycling."

The awards were presented at a parliamentary reception in Westminster last month after a ride to the House of Commons by more than 150 women to raise awareness of women's cycling.

This was led by Angellica Bell. She only started cycling after she was inspired by her stepfather and a chance to appear on a TV cycling challenge to ride a stage of the Tour de France.

"Cycling is not only one of the most enjoyable ways of getting around, it's great for your health, fitness and the environment," she said.

TWO original members of famous 60s Bognor Regis band, The Diamonds, will playing a gig tonight.

Terry Slade and Steve Gordon will be joined by Pete Manville to provide some rock'n'roll'n'fun at High Street venue Tao. Drummer Terry and lead guitarist Steve have a combined age of 140 and Pete has toured Europe and made several albums.

Together and apart they have played famous venues like Wembley, Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park alongside stars such as The Beatles, Status Quo, Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield.

Guilty pleas for city fraud

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A WOMAN from Pagham who stole nearly £117,000 from a business has pleaded guilty at court.

Lynn Boakes, 47 of Sea Lane, Pagham, was hired as a bookkeeper at a steel company in Birdham in April, 2013, and was responsible for the company’s payroll.

Towards the end of 2016, Boakes started taking regular sick days, despite posts on social media showing her shopping or being abroad on holiday.

Concerned, a director of the company

searched payroll documents for the previous few years and discovered Boakes had been paying herself a higher wage than had been agreed. From October, 2014, to April, 2017, she had overpaid herself by a total of £13,462.

Further investigation discovered Boakes had used her inflated pay slips to purchase a car on finance.

She had also diverted £103,450.26-worth of her employer’s funds into her personal bank account that had been disguised by using a fake company name.

Boakes was immediately suspended from the company. Police were informed and on her seized work computer a reference for a job application for her husband was found. The reference falsely stated David Boakes, 54, of Sea Lane in Pagham, had worked for the steel company for two years and it had been signed by a fake employee, ‘Janet Young’ – Boakes’ actual middle and maiden names.

At Hove Crown Court on Monday, July 15, Lynn Boakes pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud: fraud by abuse of position, fraud by false representation and making an article for use in fraud.

David Boakes pleaded guilty to fraud by representation and not guilty to converting criminal property, which the courts decided would lie on file and no further action will be taken.

The pair will be sentenced at Hove Crown Court on August 22.

Annual report

WEST SUSSEX County Council has noted and published its annual report for the year 2018/19, following a debate at a meeting of the full council in County Hall, Chichester.

The report provides a comprehensive summary of the council’s achievements over the year, including updates on performance and an acknowledgement of the council’s commitment to improvements to its children’s services and fire and rescue service.

Highlights from the report include: • An extensive programme of highway maintenance schemes funded by a £6m capital injection from the Department for Transport • West Sussex local authorities chosen by government to pilot a 75 per cent business rates retention, which will deliver £19m • Around 4,000 more pupils in West Sussex attending a school rated by Ofsted as at least ‘Good’ compared with 2016 • School dinners in West Sussex contained just 5g of sugar on average, down 73 per cent on 2014

• • Delayed transfers of care between hospitals and homes continued to decrease, exceeding the national target • More than 1,000 households helped to switch to cheaper ‘Your Energy Sussex’ energy tariff in just four months.

Commenting on the report, county council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “I am pleased to publish the second annual report on our progress against the West Sussex Plan.

“Reading this report, I am reminded again of the difference that the county council makes to the lives of our residents and the honour and responsibility that comes with being its leader.

“I also recognise our challenges but what is most important for our residents is how we have responded to them.

"We have in place two plans to improve our children’s services and fire and rescue service.

"Ongoing, implementing these plans is our priority and it is only in working in partnership that we can deliver them."

` Help for offenders WEST SUSSEX councils, police and the probation services have teamed up to ensure high-risk offenders get the help they need when released from prison.

There were huge concerns when the council cut £4m from its £6.3m housing related support budget, with no money available to pay for offender services from 2020/21.

Those services included support which helped to monitor and manage the men and women who were being released.

Fears were raised that, if the service was lost, former prisoners would opt to re-offend and return to prison rather than face sleeping on the streets.

At a meeting of the full council on Friday, July 17, Cllr Amanda Jupp, cabinet member for adults and health, announced that every district and borough council in West Sussex, along with the county council, Sussex Police, the Police & Crime Commissioner and the probation services had come together to pay for the service.

Around 100 violent and sex offenders are released into the county each year and, in 2018/19, £283,000 was put towards the housing-based support.

Cllr Jupp said: “That is a great step forward in my opinion. I believe that partnership is very powerful – and we could no longer go on providing this money ourselves.

We have to work in partnership. So I’m delighted that we have done that.”

A county council spokesman said the funding was only and interim arrangement and would last until at least October 2020.

Hospital's Friends look forward as centenary fete is big success FUNDRAISERS have committed more than a quarter of a million pounds to improve the Bognor Regis hospital.

The Friends charity at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital has told the NHS it will spend the money to improve the care of patients in two departments.

Its members will contribute £160,000 to a new physiotherapy unit. A further £112,000 will go towards a new densitometry unit.

Friends' chairman Brian Knight said: "We hope the new physiotherapy unit is going to be happening this year. The NHS is drawing up the plans now."

Foundation NHS Trust, is only possible because of continued support from the town's residents. This was shown at the annual fete last Saturday.

Mr Knight estimated a record crowd of at least 2,000 people went along to the event. He expected the Friends to make £5,000 for future projects.

"We get the money in and we spend it for the patients' benefits," he said. "I'm delighted with the success of the fete for the hospital's centenary.

"It was raining when we were setting it up but the sun's come out now and it has been absolutely packed. Some of the stalls ran out of goods after 90 minutes.

The event has been that popular."

About 25 stalls were sited in the hospital's grounds, with an array of goods, from plants to books to clothes.

An historic touch was provided by the matron, Karen Richards, and her Arundel counterpart, Elaine Cooke, wearing 1919 nursing costumes which matched those in a photograph of the original hospital's opening on July 16 that year.

Karen said: "This is our way of wishing the hospital a happy birthday. It's remarkable that the hospital is 100 years old.

"This is a really friendly hospital and the community here are really passionate about it - and it has an absolutely wonderful Friends."

Elaine said: "People have been really pleased to see us like this. We have had a lot of photos taken."

A birthday celebrations book also

proved popular, with centenary messages from well-wishers.

Among them were Lynda Siddall who wrote: "Happy birthday BRWMH, 100 years - amazing. Keep up the good work."

Denise Miller wrote: "Congratulations on your centenary. Keep doing a sterling job."

Sam Piper, a community assistant with the trust, said the fete was one of a few thought to still survive.

"That shows how much of a community hospital this is," she said. "Although we didn't open until 1pm, people were queuing up and trying to buy goods at 11.30am. It's been such an amazing day.

"People always say how much the hospital means to them. It's not just the services here that we provide for people to come to us.

"That are a lot of services that go out to people in the community."

Miniature train rides were available from Chichester Model Engineers and a series of singers kept crowds entertained.

Exhibitors at the fete included Felpham Art Group.

Its chairman, Terry Collins, and Monica Kotulla, treasurer, looked after some 30 paintings on display. Four were quickly sold.

Terry said: "The Friends are our adopted charity and we have something like 37 paintings on show at the hospital all the time.

We donate 20 per cent of the proceeds of those that we sell to the Friends.

"We also collect donations for the Friends throughout the year and give a proportion of the money we make at our annual exhibition in Arundel."

Last year saw the group donate some £250 to the Friends.

"The hospital is enormously important to people around Bognor Regis. It's most people's first port of call if they have a minor injury. This is the place to come.

"It has a special place in people's thoughts when it comes to medical services in this area," he said.

The Friends' future spending at the hospital comes after it donated £40,000 to creating the current garden at the entrance.

Dear Editor, I have taken photographs illustrating the progressive destruction of the roadsides and verges of the main commuting route for residents of Pagham.

THey show just one example of many and will come as no surprise to the regular users of this road. THe fact such recent repair work can be destroyed so quickly will also come as no surprise.

For the benefit of those fortunate enough not to have to use this road, the gouging out of the roadsides is caused because, as well as the usual cars and bicycles, this narrow winding road also has to support articulated lorries, buses and large agricultural vehicles resulting in the wheels of said vehicles spilling over the edges of the road.

It was with interest, therefore, that I read last week that Hallam Land Management Ltd are offering a £100,000 bond for measures to Pagham Road. Let us be clear, this sweetener is being offered days before the Arun District Council development control committee meeting takes place to

decide on Hallam's second attempt to build at least 300 homes on Hook Lane field.

THis is because their first application was refused in October, 2018, due to: 'increased vehicle movements...will exacerbate the capacity issues on the local highway network...'

THis second application is almost the same as the first. I read that the clerk for Pagham Parish Council was still unhappy with the new application.

She is absolutely right. THe bond being offered is for signs to warn of speeding.

Speeding is a problem on a lot of roads here and throughout the county. And more signage to try and control it could be good.

However, it is the nature of Pagham Road coupled with the size and volume of traffic which causes the accidents, delays and its degrading condition.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of regime change. THe new politicians are now having to confront ingrained forces.

f Post reader Natasha Jenkins took this photograph of lightning above Bognor Regis seafront with the moon rising Dear Editor, I consider it a travesty of justice to have had the fencing on Felpham seafront carried out without any consultation by Arun District Council with any sitting parish or district councillor prior to the election.

THere was no consultation with any residents and what seems a deliberate action to have rushed the work during the purdah period to head off any real debate.

One person made the decision to spend over £80,000 of Arun council taxpayers’ money on this. Nor, even as I understand, was any cabinet member told or spoken to by any senior department employees in carrying out this week.

If they had been, I am sure advice to consult would have been made and, if not, why not?

THere has been no guarantee that this will be removed. THere is no guarantee that it will not occur anywhere else in Arun or, even, other greenswards fenced off. THis has firmly stopped Felpham Parish Council using the area as the long-established site of Fun on the Prom that is put on for all residents to enjoy.

It appears that Arun allows the beach hut owners unlimited use of the area that was always open for use by all.

A clear demarcation of an area for the hut owners to use is needed. I have seen large areas of the greenswards fenced off with windbreakers to stop others using it. It is this which should come under

control!

We have a new administration and a new cabinet member at Arun that advocates openness. THis situation needs correcting and a firm policy made of all officers carrying out consultation in the first place of the elected representatives of the community.

If 14 offences of those caught allowing their dogs to foul causes this result, then a full scrutiny of these new policy needs investigating.

THis is one step too far and so many questions remain unanswered for the public using Felpham’s seafront.

A car and a driving licence would be helpful, as Sussex is a large county. Some brief speaking to Area meetings of 50+ persons is inherent, though training is available in case of nervousness.

First Visit Volunteer – Royal Voluntary Service Are you a good listener? Do you like meeting new people and talking to them about their lives?

First Visit Volunteers meet with individuals and their families/carers to find out how Royal Voluntary Service can provide the practical support they need to help them live the life they want. This will involve identifying what activities, support and services they need to achieve these outcomes. Once they know this Royal Voluntary Service can shape their services to meet these needs, or they can signpost them to other organisations who can help do so. As a first visit volunteer you act as a catalyst, initiating the first steps a person can take to reducing their isolation and building connections with their local community.

Join a friendly team of volunteers who help support patients, visitors and staff of St Richard’s Hospital by serving in the Friend’s Hospital shop or taking the daily trolley around the wards.

Working in pairs, there are three shifts each day (Mon - Fri) in the shop, each lasting 3 hours, while the trolley takes approx. 2 hours. The weekend trolley visits all wards, with 2 volunteers, and takes 3 to 3.5 hours. This is a chance to help make a daily difference for patients, for whom the trolley visit brightens the day. Visitors and outpatients may need a snack and a newspaper, and a friendly word if they are anxious. Hospital staff visit the shop on their short breaks and value quick and cheerful service before returning to the ward.

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK August 2 – 8

The 28th Chichester International Film Festival, the largest on the south coast, opens its wide doors at Chichester Cinema at New Park on August 8 with the UK premiere of The Conductor, a magnificent and epic new Dutch film in the presence of the director, actors and producer.

The closing gala film, a preview, on Sunday, August 25, is Mrs Lowry & Son, a beautiful, delicate, intimate and amusing story of the brittle but vital relationship between L. S. Lowry (Timothy Spall), and his bedridden, unhappy and controlling mother (Vanessa Redgrave).

There are three open air screenings from August 2 at Chichester’s historic Priory Park - Bohemian Rhapsody, Aug 2, The Lion King, Aug 3, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Aug 4. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon transports us to late 19th century America, where iconic inventor Thomas Edison attempts to dazzle Manhattan with his large scale, low voltage, direct current technology. Event. Free open air jazz concert in Felpham this Sunday.

For the third year running, Jazz at the Village has joined with the Felpham Village Conservation Society in organising Picnic in the Park, a free open air concert in Old Rectory Gardens, again backed by the Post. It’s an opportunity to bring along your picnic, drinks, chairs and rugs from 3.00pm and from 4.00pm to listen to a couple hours of top quality entertainment provided by some of the finest full time jazz musicians in the UK today.

Leading the concert this year will be Ben Holder, a truly outstanding and gifted young jazz violinist who receives huge acclaim wherever he performs, one cannot fail to be impressed by his sheer talent. Returning again this year and alongside Ben will be Julian Marc- Stringle, acknowledged to be one of the UK’s finest clarinettists, and a supporting rhythm section. Should the weather be wet then the concert will take place in Felpham Memorial Village Hall, limited to 125 admissions.

Theatre. 8 Hotels. A new play, based on real events in the United States in 1944, is at Chichester's Minerva Theatre until August 24. It stars US actor Tory Kittles making his UK theatre debut, as Paul Robeson, the celebrated actor, singer and political campaigner, who is touring as the eponymous hero in Shakespeare’s Othello. His Desdemona is the brilliant young actress Uta Hagen, played by Emma Paetz, while her husband, the Broadway star José Ferrer, plays Iago.

This part will be taken by Ben Cura, with Pandora Colin as the producer of the tragedy. All the actors start as friends but the boundaries between onstage passion and their offstage lives begin to blur at this turbulent time. Music. The Glenn Miller Orchestra. The Glenn Miller Orchestra arrives in Worthing to delight audiences with their nostalgic big band sound on Sunday, August 4, at 3pm. The audience at the Pavilion Theatre will be transported back to the heady days and music of the 1940s – with the fabulous harmonies of the Moonlight Serenaders and the sublime vocals of Catherine Sykes and Mark Porter. Also joining them, with the sounds of the Andrews Sisters, are the Polka Dot Dolls - all under the steady directorial hand of Ray McVay. The current UK band was put together in 1988 by legendary musical entertainer McVay, in conjunction with Glenn Miller Productions in New York. Weald & Downland Living Museum's inaugural season of outdoor entertainment this week offers relaxed music, Shakespeare and children's theatre. Event. Cream teas. Once again, each Sunday this month, August 4, 11, 18 and 25, will see cream teas being served in the St Blaise Centre in the grounds of Boxgrove Priory between 2pm and 5pm. Art. The Summer Exhibition - Arundel Museum. Artworks created by students, aged 15 to 18, from six West Sussex secondary schools feature in this exhibition, which is open from Wednesday, August 7, until Sunday, September 1.

The individually-chosen 80 GCSE and A-level examination pieces which form the display in the museum's Jubilee Gallery were selected from more than 1,000 pieces. The participating schools are: Bishop Luffa CE School, Chichester High School, Lancing College, Slindon College, St. Philip Howard Catholic High School and The Chichester Free School.

Wilde's popular play inspires new work

Mediaeval festival brings era to life in village

The Odds of Being Earnest is Greg’s second play for the Connaught Studio, following the success of Poisoned Beds, with Lucy Flannery, in November, 2018, based around Emsworth's oyster fishing industry.

Chichester-based Greg’s plays include The Hawkhurst Gang, The Exchange, Number 60 to the Somme (with Carol Godsmark), Separate Ways and Daisy & Marvin Save the Day (both with John Gleadall). He is the leader of the Criterion New Writing script development programme in London’s West End. The Odds of Being Earnest is a charming play about chance, the roulette wheel of life

Greg reveals a chance meeting between Lady Bracknell and Reverend Chasuble, 20 years later, on the terrace at Monte Carlo. It answers the questions: Was Bracknell right to prize money above love? Was Chasuble right to reject celibacy and marry Prism? Did Jack and Gwendolen stay in Shropshire? Was it likely that Algernon would make Cecily happy?

Greg said: "It’s important to like the characters, even if you don’t admire them, because if you don’t like them you can never understand them. But there are plenty of clues in the original play that indicate that they are not all entirely unselfish people.

"In the years to come, which ones will be mellowed by time and their responsibilities – and which ones will become more feckless and self-centred? And what will be the repercussions on everyone else?"

History Village, in the Mediaeval Meadow, where inhabitants live and work exactly as they would have in the Middle Ages. Peruse their traditional wares in the Mediaeval Marketplace, where traders and hawkers vie for attention and wandering minstrels, dance troupes, and a court jester entertain the crowds throughout the day.

The Children's Kingdom is a festival within a festival where the currency is the mediaeval groat, which kids can use to try archery, face and wound painting, Pelt The Peasant, sword school and bouncy castle.

Larger-than-life characters from the Middle Ages are in the Mediaeval learning zones, which offers vivid storytelling and the Copper Pot where a mediaeval chef will explain the weird and wonderful cooking of the time.

John is a great believer in musical education and for the past three seasons WSO has put on a free daytime concert for schoolchildren at the Assembly Hall, in association with West Sussex Music and with the generosity of sponsors. The museum, on part of the site of one of the country's most famous Royal Air Force fighter bases during the Second World War, will host a day of indoor and outdoor children's activities on Sunday, August 4.

These will include designing and colouring squadron badges, making paper aeroplanes, learning and using Morse code and the phonetic alphabet, face painting and dressing up as a pilot. Extracts from Grandpa's Great Escape, by David Walliams, will be read.

Organisers hope an ambulance and a fire engine will be available for children to explore and there will be a drill demonstration by Chichester Air Training Cadet Corps.

As well as aviation-related stalls, there will be a mini train for rides and demonstrations of radio-controlled model tanks.

A popular free attraction from last year, the 'make-it and take-it' chance to make an Airfix model aircraft to take away, will be repeated.

Visitors, both young and old, can try their hands at flying the museum's simulators, including the Lightning fast jet.

Also on display will be the latest acquisition, a full-scale replica of a Westland Special Duties Lysander aircraft as used by the RAF

Tangmere Military  Aviation Museum is located in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

If you want to imagine what it was like to be a bomb-aimer in the war, there's the chance to take part in a competition and try dropping bombs on a target from a radio-controlled Lancaster bomber and, subject to the weather, the cockpits of the museum's aircraft displayed outside, including the Harrier jump-jet, will be open.

When visitors need a break from the fun, the NAAFI-themed tea room, beer tent and burger bar will be open, with DJ Pete Cross, of Angel Radio, playing music of the 1940s and 1950s to get everyone in the mood.

The main displays relating to the historic achievements of the RAF men and machines linked to Tangmere's heritage on the front line of Britain's defence will be available to view, as usual.

Parking is free and entry for the family day, which runs from 10am-5pm, is at a reduced rate of £8 for adults, £4 for children and £20 for a family.

Clean and natural spas are opening up more and more around the country, but they're still not quite the norm.

If the first thing you notice when you walk into the salon is the fumes smacking you in the face right away, then think perhaps about seeking out another spa.

Salons that use straight acetone to remove the polish and formaldehyde in the base coat usually have the most airborne chemicals. And when they don't have great ventilation, the airborne chemicals just linger and the smell can be very strong!

But let’s be real about this... being in a place with airborne chemicals for 30 minutes every week or so isn't likely to make you sick—it's not enough exposure.

But it is incredibly harmful to those who work there.

All the chemicals in nail polish are airborne, so that's the way you get potentially ill from them, by breathing them in. Unless you are smelling your polish all day, that's not going to hurt you, but the employees are the ones we need to be concerned about.

And supporting spas that treat their employees humanely should be top of our lists,whether or not you are a stickler for natural products. The products are what are more potentially harmful to a customer because that's what is living on the skin.

So in terms of your own safety, the

most important thing is your base coat, because that is what is touching your nail and seeping into the skin. So perhaps ask if they are formaldehyde-free.

This is the most common ingredient in base coats, so even if a salon carries toxic-free polishes, that doesn't mean the same thing across the board.

They still might have formaldehyde in the base coat. But if the entire salon is formaldehyde-free, you are more than likely in a safe place! The two other ingredients you should really look out for are camphor (which is used to provide high shine) and toluene (for vibrant colour).

All these things are important to think about, so you don’t pile in extra unnecessary chemical and toxins into your precious bodies.

TEA and cake was on offer at the Bognor Regis RAFA’s brew for a few event.

Their coffee mornings take place four times a year, raising money for the Wings Appeal.

Bognor’s wing officer, Marion Mewet, pictured below, said: “We are collecting money for the RAF personnel of the past, present, and future.

“We raise this money for anyone who may face problems in the future. They can turn to us for help."

The branch is very popular within the area, and one of the most successful in the country.

Last year the branch raised the second highest amount of money for the cause.

Marion’s husband, Cliff Mewett, pictured below, also ARTIST Antonia Rolls' open garden was a success in glorious Bognor Regis sunshine.

Antonia staged the event to promote her artistic work and her role as a soul midwife or holistic end of life companion.

It also highlighted the work of Waltham House Arts and Wellness centre in Bognor Regis, where she stages many of her events, and fundraises for Macmillan Cancer Research, for which she volunteers.

Antonia, pictured above, said: "The weekend was filled with sunshine and a steady stream of people visiting the garden, sitting under the trees, chatting and viewing artwork.

"There were also scheduled soul midwife discussions in the garden, where people asked questions about what I do and what it all means. These discussions were very moving and enlightening.

"We displayed my artwork for sale all around the garden, among the flowers and in the trees and shrubs, leading people around the lovely garden.

"Inside the house, we had a huge table filled with home-made cakes, pictured below, and tea, coffee and juices for visitors to help themselves and leave donations."

The annex at Antonia's house in Marshall Avenue was filled with a pop-up shop of lovelies by her lodgers on their patio.

Marie Paul, the artist and creator of Waltham House, in Town Cross Avenue, displayed her art and talked with people about the upcoming events and art exhibitions there.

Brian Herman, the award-winning lead volunteer from Macmillan, collected the entrance free and donations at the gate. More than £100 was raised.

A PAIR of students from a school in Bognor Regis have been invited to the national finals of a science competition.

The Regis School students, Robert Fletcher (Year 7) and Aston Hossack (Year 8) have been asked to attend the Big Bang Science competition national final in Birmingham as winners of the regional heat.

Aston said: "I think it is an excellent opportunity and an added bonus to have got through to the national finals."

Robert added: "It was good to listen to experts' opinions on my project work.

"I can’t wait to hear what the next judges have to say at the national final."

He said: “I’m ex-RAF and think it’s important to help out.

Today I have come along to show my support. I have been many times before and will continue to do so to help out in the fundraising.”

Both students competed along with other pupils from their school in the regional final in Ardingly.

Rebecca Offer, the team leader for Key Stage 3 science at The Regis School, said: "It was a delight to see our students really engaging with their project work and articulating so well what they did."

"I know that many judges were highly impressed with the quality of their work and explanations."

Four of the six Regis students at the regional final won awards. Along with Robert and Aston, Isaac Boniface (Year 7) and Sophie Riley (Year 8) received awards for their school projects.

VOLUNTEERS have begun to ensure a long-awaited community garden in Bognor Regis takes shape.

The willing group of helpers from one of the project's founders, Southern Water, gave their time to get the scheme underway at the town's library.

The volunteer day was the first of many planned by the Aldingbourne Trust, which is spearheading the project.

A trust spokeswoman said: "The project aims to provide the community with a safe space to relax and enjoy and also for people to garden for those without their own gardens.

"The library has been kind enough to grant the trust a licence for the use of the garden and it is hoped that more and more people will visit the library as a result."

The volunteer day was the result of two years of planning and signified a momentous day for the charity.

Lisa Palmer, the temporary garden co-ordinator, said: "It's great to be finally making progress."

The team of eight staff from Southern Water, pictured below, completed lots of hard work in the heat. They dug beds, sanded picnic benches, completed lots of weeding and pruning and prepared the fence for painting.

The design has evolved from a community feedback exercise last November. Most of the suggestions have been included.

The London Road site will be fully accessible, with raised beds and sensory planting.

Further community days are being held on August 14 and 17 to get planting well under way. The trust's goal is to open the garden by the end of this month.

PRE-SCHOOL activities are being launched next month at the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

The centre's newly-decorated soft play area, below, will be used for the sessions four days a week in West Sussex school terms. The dedicated pre-school activities room will enable arts and crafts, messy play, music and movement, woodland explorers and story time to take place.

A spokesman for the Aldingbourne Trust charity, which runs the centre, said: "These sessions will be around an hour long, running in both the morning and afternoon, and will be specially created for 0-5 years.

"They will be inspired by different themes, such as shapes, seasons, cultural festivals and favourites characters and books.

"Each session will aim to promote children's physical, communication and social skills, and will be fun, educational, interactive and inclusive." Pre-book at: aldingbournetrust.org

Bognor Regis' launch of the flying showroom The introduction of air travel changed the way Lec traded forever WHEN talking about airfields in the Bognor Regis area, it has become apparent that many people think of the airfield behind the old Lec Refrigeration’s factory in Shripney (today Sainsbury’s) as the only Bognor airfield.

However, back in 2005, during the production of the history of the Bognor Regis Advanced Landing Ground (ALG), we have received comments about the Bognor Regis ALG. becoming the Lec airfield, and the Lec airfield becoming the ALG - a most confusing situation.

To dispel this confusion, we decided to include a chapter specifically on the Lec Refrigeration Ltd airfield.

It was in fact that company which laid out a completely new grass airfield for light aircraft on a farmer’s fields behind the Shripney Road factory in 1946.

An extract from an article that appeared in a Board of Trade Journal for October 4, 1957, written by Charles Purley, explains in more detail with the headline of “Managing director uses own aircraft on Sales Tours Overseas" It stated: “Readers of the board of trade Journal may be interested to know how a firm starting from scratch in 1946, with an initial capital of £1,600, has built up a sales turnover of approximately a million and a half pounds annually, of which 75 per cent goes to the export market.”

“Before I went into the refrigeration business, I could claim a long experience of keeping food on ice.

"In those days, refrigeration units were not only rare but expensive. I therefore started taking home-made storage refrigeration for myself and my friends.

"From the outset, we concentrated on exports, for the simple reason that the government would release steel only to firms engaged in the export trade.”

He believed that they did not use an easy route, but there were advantages.

It is difficult for us today to realise that at one time the sale of refrigerators was actually seasonal.

Around that time he also mentioned that overseas sales would help, especially when considering changes in hire purchase regulations and a credit squeeze.

He and the company were future thinking, believing that, while expensive and unnecessary for them, and aeroplane would be very useful.

He believed there was a likelihood of business starting especially with rapid personal contact. Both buyer and seller have their problems and a frank discussion can do away with snags before they arise.

It was a decision that was to prove very beneficial for the company while building

their fledgling business.

It became vital to visit overseas buyers on a regular basis and for them to visit the factory.

With their own aircraft, they saved hours.

Sometimes it was quicker to get to the continent than to a London airport.

They would take a qualified refrigeration engineer with flying experience and take it in turns to pilot the plane.

Once they arrived, one would sell and the engineer would clear up any technical difficulties.

What I found quite astonishing when doing this research was that at one point they visited 14 countries in just 21 days. This sounds easy today but in their early days it was not necessarily high priority, or even possible.

Frank Purley, the export director, made sales trips to Europe and north Africa.

They felt that with their own aircraft they could arrive unannounced and make the news - another good way of advertising.

Realising the positivity of their own aircraft, they purchased an Avro Anson which was to be transformed into a flying showroom, fitted with long-range tanks.

The company commented “that it was possible to fly the northern route to Canada via Iceland and Greenland, calling on customers throughout Canada and the United States, and visiting all the south American countries.

In this new aircraft they said there is no country in the world, import licences permitting, where we cannot fly and do business.

There are, of course, many people in the town and around the country who will have memories of the aircraft, some good, some not so good.

At one time, the planes were used to ferry essential staff to factories in Londonderry and

Calais.

Within the archives in the West Sussex Record Office there were many pieces of information.

One included an accident on the Isle of Wight in 1947 and another in 1948, when the plane hit a cow while taking off from Bognor.

The airfield had been leased to a local farmer and was inhabited by a herd of “bovine beasties”, which, not being house-trained, showed little respect for the airfield and wandered around regularly.

Having no hangar at the time, the aeroplane was tethered in one corner of the field.

Eventually, the addition of an electrified fence successfully warded off the inquisitive cattle.

Whenever there was a scramble (RAF term for ‘getting airborne’), the cattle had to be driven clear of the take-off strip and then repeated for the landing.

Although not registered to Lec, a Pitts S-1E Special G-POKE, and reg. to David Purley (son of the chairman of Lec) 27.5.81 was kept at Bognor airfield.

This was unfortunately destroyed in a fatal crash into the sea half a mile east of Bognor Pier on July 2, 1985, while David was practising aerobatics.

Today, of course, this is all history but the area still raises many questions.

I have often been in the café in Sainsbury’s and hear people asking about the airstrip they can see on the other side of the railway line.

Or, of course, people often see a glider in the vicinity.

From 2016, this area has been operated by the Bognor Regis Gliding Club, where you can even learn to fly, so take a look at their website, you may want to have a new and different look at our area.

Frankie jumps for joy as Strad wins LEADING stayer Stradivarius made it a Glorious three in a row after winning for the Goodwood Cup yet again.

Jockey Frankie Dettori was jumping for joy after leading the five-year-old to victory in the two mile race at the opening day of the festival.

The 4/5 favourite soared powerfully into contention in the home straight and displayed his customary turn of foot to win eased down by a neck from the Mark Johnston-trained Dee Ex Bee (11/2) in second.

Victory means John Gosden's horse emulates Double Trigger (1995, 1997 & 1998) by recording a third victory in the ÂŁ500,000 race.

Newmarket trainer Gosden said: "Stradivarius is a gorgeous horse. He followed Cross Counter and that is proper horse.

Frankie followed the right horse, pounced at the right time, timed it beautifully and then overdid the waving at the crowd.

"I was not comfortable where he was early on in the race, but from halfway I was happy with his position.

"We discussed what we thought would happen in the race and then you leave Frankie

alone to decide during the race.

"Stradivarius has won his race and then our great hero started waving to the crowd.

I must say that is a little dangerous because Stradivarius is a pro and when you say 'well that's enough', he says 'OK, I'll put the brakes on' and it was lucky Frankie didn't go over the handle bars I thought!

"It is great to emulate Double Trigger who was a great horse of Mark Johnston's.

Stradivarius is a little street fighter and he just puts it in when he has to. That is the great thing about this horse."

Wednesday saw another standout performer do the business in front of thousands of racegoers as Gosden's Too Darn Hot landed Wednesday's ÂŁ1,059,250 Group One Qatar Sussex Stakes.

Owned and bred by Lord Lloyd-Webber, and set one day to become a stallion under Sheikh Mohammed's Darley banner, the Evens favourite was nudged to victory by Dettori, who was riding his 11th G1 win of a memorable year.

The partnership beat Circus Maximus (9/2) and I Can Fly (14/1) by half a length and a length and a quarter.

A GROUP of enthusiastic cricketers were bowled over after trying a new take on the popular summer sport.

Following the success of England lifting the World Cup, participants took part in the first session of walking cricket at Bognor Regis Cricket Club.

With the club providing the necessary equipment, members of the Bognor U3A took to the specially marked out wicket to try and rekindle those skills lost in the mists of time.

Iain Palot, chairman of Bognor Regis U3A, said: "What a great time was had by all, two innings of four overs for each batsman regardless of how many times they were out.

"The scoring is quite complicated and each player bowling at least four overs.

There were some stiff shoulders the following day.

"What great fun, true to the U3A tagline of "Learn, live and laugh". Oh how we laughed. All we needed was a few more players."

Anyone over 55 and fully retired who fancies playing cricket with a soft ball and a plastic bat is welcome to join the event at the Regis Oval in Hawthorn Road on Tuesday at 4.30pm (weather permitting).

f Middleton play Preston Nomads tomorrow

Nomads head to Middleton MIDDLETON CC's top four credentials will be put to the test as they welcome third-place Preston Nomads to Sea Lane tomorrow (11.30am).

Sean Heather's side have impressed throughout the summer, racking up five victories from 13 matches so far to sit comfortably in the top half of the Sussex Premier Division.

With five matches of the campaign to go, Middleton will now want to step up their game - starting tomorrow against perennial title contenders Nomads tomorrow.

The visitors have struggled of late, winning just one of their last four in the league.

Middleton have a similar record with both sides having their matches washed out due to the weather last time out.

Heather's outfit head into the game knowing though that victory could lift them into a top three spot entering into the last month of the season.

Central to any victory will be the form of overseas player Mahesh Rawat who has been

imperious with the bat so far, averaging more than 150 in the Premier Division after scoring five 50s and two centuries in his 11 innings.

Heather, too, has been a good performer, sitting fifth in the divisional batting standings as he averages more than 50 with the bat after an unbeaten 144 earlier in the season.

Elsewhere, In Division Three West, Pagham remain well and truly in the promotion hunt after an excellent win over Steyning last weekend.

While other sides had their matches called off, Stuart Hanks' side took advantage, reducing the home side to 178-4 off 40 overs.

In reply, Pagham recovered from 17-2 to reach the total with more than three overs in hand.

Much of this was down to an uneaten half-century from Nick Smith, who hit four sixes in his 74. That win means there is just one point separating the top three with five matches to go.

Next up is a visit from secondplace Roffey Seconds tomorrow (12.30pm).

BOGNOR CC will look to step up their promotion push this weekend when they visit bottom side Ifield tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side sit fourth in Division Two, 18 points off the top two, with five matches of the season to go.

Bognor have the perfect opportunity to close ground on the sides above them when they head to Ifield, who have won just once all season.

Maskell's side are unbeaten in their last three matches, which includes a quick-fire victory at leaders Hastings & St Leonards last time out.

After putting the home side into bat, Zimbabwean spinner Roy Kaia took charge, taking six wickets for 16 runs in 11.4 overs - which included seven maidens - in a commanding bowling display.

His contribution helped reduce Hastings from 43-2 to 76 all out, a tally which Bognor were able to chase down with six wickets in hand.

Maskell's side will look to build on this win tomorrow against an Ifield side who have not won in their last five matches.

But success will rely on improving their

batting, with a haul of just 29 batting points the second worse in the division - something which could leave them short when the season draws to a close.

Elsewhere, Chichester Priory Park's improved run of form continues as they chalked up their third win in four matches against Ifield last time out.

Matthew Geffen's side batted first at Goodwood with opener Matthew Bennison (48) providing a good platform on which Chi could build.

But the visitors hit back and it was left to Will Futcher (18*) and Robert Carver (33) to put on a half-century partnership for the eighth wicket to help Priory to 198 for 8 off 46 overs.

In reply, Chi's bowlers took full advantage of the conditions to keep on pegging back Ifield in their pursuit of the total.

The standout performer proved to be James Mayne, whose figures of 5-36 ensured the visitors were dismissed for 110.

Chi, who are now sixth in the standings after picking up a maximum 30 point haul, play second-bottom Goring tomorrow (12.30pm), a side who have lost just once in their last five matches.

Chi boss is clear : we're up for challenge ahead

Pagham's new boss targets top ten finish PAGHAM boss Bob Paine believes his young side can achieve a top ten finish this season - despite the squad being pieced together in just a few weeks.

The former East Preston manager only took charge at Nyetimber Lane a month ago, meaning other SCFL Premier clubs had a head start on preparations for the new campaign.

Paine has acted quickly, bringing in more than ten new players into the first team and also placing greater emphasis on the youth set up.

All eyes are on bringing longterm success to the Lions - but the new manager admits that, while patience will be needed, he is keen to start producing results sooner rather than later.

Paine said: “If we can finish in the top ten, considering where we are now and the work we are trying to do, that will be good. “No one is under more pressure than we [the coaching team] are. “We are behind the curve ball and see it as a longer term project. We have to start somewhere and need to manage expectations. “We will all try to do the best

we can. But we have to be realistic.�

Pagham start their league season tomorrow with a trip to AFC Uckfield (3pm) before hosting Saltdean United on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Lions rounded off the preseason preparations with a 4-3 victory over Combined Counties side Deportivo Galicia last weekend.

Paine is now focused on preparing for competitive matches - with the first team and under 23s training together moving forward He said: “This is a clubwide project. It’s not about having separate teams but about being inclusive and the lads knowing that if they do well they will get a chance to progress through the pathway. “Last year, at East Preston, the senior and youth teams had 91 fixtures and I probably saw 86 of them. “That’s sending the message to players that if they play well that will be recognised and they will get opportunity.

He added: "The chairman and other committee members know it will not be an easy start but I know things in the past have worked and look forward to bringing that to Pagham."

Netball CHICHESTER College’s netball team are celebrating a new partnership deal, which it is hoped will herald the start of a netball academy.

The college and local netball team MSL have teamed up to create a three-tiered playing structure, with players of all ages enjoying the opportunity to take their talent to the court each week.

Sponsored by local letting agency mystudentlet.co.uk the teams will benefit from new kit – including dresses, under layers and training gear.

They will play across three leagues, with the college’s development team taking to the court in the Chichester Netball League, while the

first team will defend the Chichester Premier title.

College players will have the chance to progress into the MSL team, which competes in the Portsmouth League.

Coach Nicola Holmes said: “This is an important step forward for the college’s netball set-up. For the first time, there will be a clear progression route for players as they develop and as they move on from the college."

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford believes his side are up to the task ahead of their first ever season in the Isthmian League.

The Oaklands Park side were imperious last season, winning the SCFL Premier title with a month to spare while scoring more than 100 goals along the way.

Ahead of the first season at Step Four, Rutherford has kept the core of the squad together.

But he has made a number of additions, notably frontman Callum Overton, Lloyd Rowatt and Corey Heath, as well as bringing former Bognor coach Darin Killpartrick in on the sidelines.

Overton has been in fine form in pre-season, netting a fine hat trick in the 3-3 draw against Isthmian Premier side Worthing at Oaklands Park last weekend.

All three new players also featured in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Bognor in the Sussex Community Shield, a match in which Chi posed a number of problems to their higher-ranked opponents.

With one more pre-season game to come, Chi will soon be switching their attention onto more competitive action - something their manager is looking forward to.

Speaking to Sussex County FA, Rutherford said: "It’s a big year for us this year, having achieved promotion, we are going into an unknown league, against teams we are not familiar with, and some grounds we’ve not visited before, but we will definitely be

giving it our best shot. “The players were a credit to the club last year, and we were not expecting to be in this position because financially the club are at least two years behind where we need to be.

"But, the players are all up for the challenge, as is everyone involved in the club."

Next up for City is an away friendly at Rutherford's former club Moneyfields tomorrow (3pm) before the FA Cup extra preliminary round match at home versus Southern Counties East Premier side Erith Town on August 10 (3pm).

Then it's the first match of the Isthmian South East campaign on August 17 with a long round trip to Ramsgate (3pm).

Elsewhere, the SCFL season gets underway this weekend and in Division One Selsey will travel to league newcomers Roffey tomorrow (3pm).

Blues sealed a top five finish last season in what was Daren Pearce's first campaign with the club.

Hopes are high that the young squad can kick on and progress in what is looking to be an extremely competitive division.

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham, who finished in mid-table last year, are also in action, hosting Oakwood at the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Rocks boss is pleased with Shield workout

IT was not a performance to savour. But the Bognor boss is pleased that his young team did enough to secure an early piece of silverware for the Rocks.

A first half strike from Dan Smith was enough to seal victory for the men in green and white over near neighbours Chichester City in the Sussex Community Shield in midweek.

With less than a fortnight to go before the Isthmian Premier season gets underway, Pearce was pleased with how his side ground out the victory.

But he believes there is still work to do, particularly up front where the running theme of 'not taking chances' appears to be affecting Bognor once again.

With one more pre-season match - a trip to Gosport Borough tonight (7.45pm) Speaking to the Post after the match, Pearce said: "The most important thing in a football team is winning.

"If I'm being honest I wasn't absolutely enamoured with the performance but you have to take into account the conditions - the wind was blowing, the pitch was slow. But from with the personal pride bit I was delighted to get a 1-0 win."

The match against last season's SCFL Premier champions was a good workout for Rocks, who

still looked to be lacking a bit of cohesion in parts of the pitch.

Pearce was full of praise for young defender Joe Dandy, who has returned to the club on loan from Portsmouth.

The 18-year-old looked comfortable on the ball at the back and started a number of Rocks attacks after the ball was rolled out to his feet.

But the manager was less than happy with his side's inability to take their chances, something which he warned on another day could have cost them silverware.

He said: "In the first half, if we had taken our chances, we would have been comfortably in front as we played some really good approach football.

"They had a couple of chances but, with no disrespect to them, I thought they were down to a bit of poor play on our part.

"At the end of the day, we got the result and bragging rights but Chi were excellent, which meant it was a good workout for both sides."

Pearce's focus is now on making sure his side are ready for the big kick off at Bishop's Stortford in just over a week's time.

He remains on the lookout for new players to add to the squad but he admits that the likelihood of finding available players at this stage is small.

Pearce calls on talented trio to start taking their chances IT’S been a running theme in recent years, which has left Jack Pearce and Robbie Blake wondering if Groundhog Day has struck again.

But if Rocks are to mount a serious run at promotion back into National South then they have to be more clinical in front of goal.

In Dan Smith, Jimmy Muitt and Stuart Green, Bognor have three players who netted more than 60 goals in all competitions last season.

But, with four pre-season games under their belts, the attacking trio have yet to find their groove, with the team averaging one goal a game in the matches so far.

If promotion from a competitive division is to be achieved then Pearce and coach Robbie Blake - who is no stranger to finding the back of the net - will want to see their frontmen clicking in time for the opening league match at Bishop's Stortford next weekend.

Speaking after the Chichester win, Pearce said: "If I'm being honest, the ball is not sticking up front enough. Jimmy is a great player and so is Dan Smith and Stuey [Green] has scored goals wherever he has gone but at the moment it is just not gelling."

The Bognor boss, who is nearing his 50th anniversary of being involved with the Rocks, is also keen to see his more senior players be more vocal on the pitch.

In the Sussex Community Shield game, long-serving players such as James Crane and skipper Harvey Whyte were seen to be giving a number of younger players a talking to after mistakes were made.

Pearce said: "We are encouraging players to get after each other as we want to win something.

"We want to have high standards and want senior players to get to grips with players on the pitch. It's no good waiting for half time to come and letting the manager do that for them. We want to see things starting there and then and will hopefully start to see a bit of that going."

And as for new signings before the season

gets underway?

All the talk is around forward Bradley Lethbridge returning to the club on loan from League One Portsmouth although nothing formal has been agreed just yet.

At the back, Pearce is also monitoring the goalkeeping situation. Former Havant stopper Charlie Searle and on loan Pompey player Petar Durin have been sharing the duties as last season's number one, Dan Lincoln, is on cricket duty with Middlesex.

THE season has not started yet but already Rocks have secured their first piece of silverware.

From my perspective, there were plenty of positives to take from the 1-0 win over Chichester City in the Sussex Community Shield.

I was a bit surprised at the response from the players, though, who were disappointed at the end of the game.

It was clear from what they said that there was a frustration at the shape of the team throughout periods of the game, something that they have been working hard on in pre-season.

But from where I was there was a lot to be pleased with as sometimes you just have to win ugly.

Chi looked very good and at times made us look vulnerable in defence at the back.

We fielded a strong side and it was good to see us secure our first win of pre-season.

I think the real test will come against Gosport this evening against a side who have spent a lot of money and will give us a good test ahead of the season starting next week.

From that we will see where we are and Jack and Robbie will start to know more about who is going to feature in their first choice team.

Barring the injuries to Chad Field and Calvin Davies, I think the team we had out to start against Chi is our first 11.

It was an entertaining match and thought when we attacked we created chances easily.

If there was an area of concern it was that the gap between defence and midfield was sometimes too big which meant it took too long for the ball to go forward.

As most fans will know, that means the ball often comes back quicker than you think!

Chi did play well and I think

they should be looking at a top half finish in their first season at step four. They know a lot about us and have a lot of explayers and coaches in their ranks, all of which meant that grinding out the win was a real plus point for me.

I was on co-comms for Rocks Radio during the match and gave Harvey Whyte the man of the match award as I think he defended well and got forward when he could.

I was also impressed with Stu Green, who is giving us an extra dimension as we did not have someone cutting in from the left hand side last season.

Tommy Leigh also impressed in midfield and, while he did make a few loose passes, he tried a number of diagonal passes which paid off as the match went on.

It was also good to hear from Ashton Leigh, who was listening in to the match while on holiday in Turkey. We all hope his recovery from injury is swift and he is back playing for us sooner rather than later.

Speaking generally, if we are to compare now to where we were 12 months ago, I think we are in a good place.

Goalkeeper is still a grey area, however. I think Charlie Searle is our number one and think he will start in goal.

There's still lots to do though before the first game at Bishop's Stortford. They will be a big physical side who will be tough to break down so we will need to be ready for a tough match. While we got four points off them last season it will be difficult to get anything out of the match.

But the players and coaches are positive and I think we can do better than last term.

I am confident we will at least make the playoffs. And if you are a betting person then we are 12/1 to win the division which may be worth a small wager.
