Pagham homes vote anger CRIES of 'absolute disgrace', 'farce' and rubbish' greeted the approval of hundreds of new homes in Pagham. Some of the 100 or so members of the public made their views known as Arun District Council backed the housing. THe angry residents - among the 312 who had formally objected to the housing - had frequently interrupted the council's development control committee meeting on Wednesday with jeers and applause,
according to councillors' comments. THis led to the committee's chairman, Cllr Jamie Bennett, urging them to keep quiet on several occasions. At one stage, about an hour into the debate, he told the noisy individuals: "If the noise continues, I will have to adjourn the meeting and clear the public gallery. "I don't want to have to do this but, please, listen to members with respect." He did not have to carry out his threat
during the debate. But the residents made their fury known as soon as the result of the knifeedge vote in favour of the development of farmland in Hook Lane was announced. Cllr Bennett adjourned the meeting for ten minutes to allow the large number of members of the public to leave without disrupting the following debate. THe outline scheme by Hallam Land Management is the fourth large housing
proposal - totalling more than 1,000 properties - around Pagham to be approved by Arun in well under a year. THis follows the approval of the council's local plan land use document which allocates the pockets of land as sites for strategic development to help Arun meet its government-set housing target of an average of 1,000 homes a year until 2031.
