A BOGNOR REGIS yachtsman has conquered one of the hardest ocean races in the world.

Gary Watts has told of the sheer thrill of completing this year's version of the famous Fastnet Race.

He was among the eight-man crew of Emma Claire, a Grand Soleil 50 yacht, which spent 90 hours at sea completing the arduous competition this month.

THe sailors' efforts saw them become the 192nd yacht back to give an overall adjusted race result of 263rd out of almost 400 starters.

Gary said taking part was one of the hardest things he had done.

"We were all elated when we reached finish line in Plymouth. It was an incredible adventure," he said.

"Enjoyable is not how any of the crew would describe it, but it was fantastic all the same. As well as exhilarating sailing, we also saw an incredible amount of wildlife, with dolphin sightings on virtually every watch.

"With very clear skies and no light pollution, night sailings also brought sightings of shooting stars and satellites,

with the seas brimming with bio luminescence."

Gary, who is the managing director of GWA Cars in Aldwick, and the crew spent all year preparing for the offshore race.

Named after the Fastnet Rock, on the southwest tip of the Republic of Ireland, the race covers 608 miles from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Land's End to the Fastnet Lighthouse and returning via the Isles of Scilly.

"All of the crew found the race really hard going," said Gary. "After a smooth start at Cowes, the sea became very rough as we reached Land's End and even worse as we turned to cross the Celtic Sea. "Wind conditions meant we were 'close hauled' (as close to the wind as possible) on a single tack for the 24 hours, 140-mile crossing.

"THis made the yacht extremely uncomfortable, both above and below deck.

"We reached the Fastnet Rock at midnight, after 60 hours at sea, with the eerie pulse of the lighthouse breaking the stormy darkness.

"With the wind then behind us, the journey back to Plymouth was both faster and much more comfortable."

Town's first Pride will be open for all on pier this weekend FAMILIES will be welcome as Pride arrives in Bognor Regis tomorrow.

THe first of the town's events aimed at promoting, supporting and celebrating the diverse LGBTQ+ community and their relatives and friends is taking place at Legends on the pier.

Bognor Regis Post is the main sponsor of the event.

Its editor-in-chief, Adam Cunard, said: "I'm proud to sponsor the first Pride Bognor Regis.

"As a newspaper, we seek to represent all those who live in the town and this backing is a reflection of that approach.

"I hope as many people as possible go along tomorrow to have a good time - and that the event will go from strength to strength in future years."

THe free fun will begin at 2pm and

carry on until 10pm.

Drag queens Cherry Liquor, Aura Jay and Danni Dior and Guests will be providing the entertainment suitable for all ages from 3pm until 7.45pm.

THey will be followed on the stage at 8pm by the Elton John Red Piano Tour tribute with a repertoire of the famous entertainer's famous songs.

As well as the performers, rainbow face art and hair colouring will be on offer to get everyone in the mood.

Celebrity's surprise TV visit to seafront

f Stephen Mulhern and his crew on crowded Bognor Regis seafront FUNSHINE DAYS took an unexpected turn last week as crews from ITV and BBC arrived to film.

THe seafront was taken over on Wednesday by crews from the popup game show In for a Penny and for BBC's Top Gear.

Hannah Murphy and Lynee Farmer were in charge of the hula hoop workshop taking place as part of the Funshine Days hosted by Bognor Regis Town Council.

Hannah said: "It’s been such a random day. I didn’t imagine when I woke up that I’d end up seeing the filming of Top Gear and In for a Penny.

"Stephen Mulhern was literally here.

THey were over here playing earlier and we’ve been asked to go over there in a bit! It’s absolutely crazy."

THe crowds of people trying to get a

flash of Stephen Mulhern's icy eyes were also enticed by the hula hooping.

"We've had so many people," she said.

"It’s been really good fun. Earlier, we were running it as an actual workshop but now there's been so much coming and going that now people are just coming along picking a hoop up and having a go.

"It’s not just the children enjoying it, the adults are too.

"It’s so nice to see people happy, to put a smile on their faces. It really does tie in with our motto 'Giggle while you wiggle'."

Hannah and Lynne both travelled from Fareham where their business is based.

"It's been mad because of the film crew," Lynne said. "THe kids have been

having so much fun. THere's been lots going on, I'm impressed at how much is happening."

Mum of two, Leslie Nielsen, was one of the impressed mums who attended the event, unaware of the celebrity appearances.

"THe funshine events are good anyway, let alone when there are celebrities just down the prom.

"THis is our first funshine day this year, but normally we come to quite a few. THere were things we wanted to but didn’t get a chance.

"We love it. It's so nice to see different people trying different things.

"Events like this are what gives Bognor life. It’s lovely when we have nice things in the town, and we do have a lot, that put Bognor on the map in a good way.

Licence demand opposed - see page 4

TWO TV stars are to combine again to help a Bognor Regis film company contest national awards.

Actor Alex Vlahos, who appeared in Canal + series Versailles, and its writer and director, George Webster, are heavily involved in the latest project by Phoenix Rising Media.

THe production company, based in the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road, will this weekend shoot Here We Are, which it will enter into Bafta's competitions.

Alex and George approached filmmaker PJ Saysell-Rosales, from Phoenix Rising Media, to work on the project which is being shot in Powys in Wales.

Alex said: "I recently worked as an actor on Phoenix Rising Media's film Striativus and I built up a really good rapport with PJ, who was directing.

"I sent him the script for Here We Are and said to let me know if he could help in any way.

"Within a day, he called me back and said he'd love to help - he thought it was beautiful.

"I don't think I would have got to this point without him and Phoenix Rising Media. It really shows that you don't have to limit yourself to London to achieve anything in the film industry."

For PJ Saysell-Rhoades, 26, the project was too good to miss. He said: "THis is an opportunity for Phoenix Rising Media to spread our name further and work with other named actors.

Set in an isolated cottage in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, and entirely without dialogue, Here We Are tells the story of a young couple Jack and Mona - played by Ferdinand Kingsley, known for ITV drama Victoria, and theatre mainstay Emma McDonald - who have gone away for the weekend.

For Alex, the use of silence in the film expected to last about 10 minutes was key. He said: "It's about a lot of things not being said. It's left up to the imagination. I find what happens in the silence is fascinating."

"Hopefully, the film can speak to many people because of this. And it's made up of 12 moments rather than scenes, which is more like what we experience in real life."

Writer George, 28, agreed. He said: "Wales was chosen as a location for two main reasons. THe first being its incredible natural beauty.

"THe second being its capacity for isolation. THe wide expanses of green rolling fields and the distant mountains are a wonderful contrast to our lead characters, who find themselves the only people for miles around.

"Not being able to escape one another's company, and forcing them to co-habitate, gives us the perfect backdrop to tell our story."

It is hoped the film will be released later this year to qualify for film festivals as well as the Bafta Cymru and Bafta Film awards.

` Proposal for flats TWO houses on the Aldwick boundary could be replaced by 23 flats under new outline plans.

Mr Breski and Mr Richards want to build the three-storey accommodation in place of the current 19-21 Nyewood Lane.

THey have applied to Arun District Council to support their proposal.

THe flats would be three two-bed properties and 20 with one bedroom.

Stephen Jupp, their planning agent, says in a statement: "Since the development is next door to the parade of shops and flats immediately to the north, the scheme has sought to draw from that design ethos but provide a scheme of high quality which is in scale with that development.

"In addition, such a house will remain to the south - at 17 Nyewood Lane, the southern end of the development reduces in scale in order to provide an acceptable and appropriate transition."

THe first Film in the Park is being staged tonight in Hotham Park.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust is showing the 80s classic, Footloose, for free on 35mm reel film from an original film projector sited on the bandstand.

Stars Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer will be seen on a 16ft screen, thanks to scaffolding from NJS Group, with Dolby sound for a slice of nostalgia.

THe film will begin at 8pm and refreshments will be on sale from 7pm. Chairs can be hired for £1.

Council backs licence battle Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk TOWN councillors have backed Bognor Regis traders fighting a new licence demand.

THe planning and licensing committee members agreed this week to add their voices to those opposing the £520 fees from West Sussex County Council.

As reported, the county council wants food businesses to pay the money for placing tables and chairs on the public highway outside their premises.

But Bognor Regis Business Improvement District leaders and senior Arun District Council members have protested that the flat fee - which is being introduced straight away - is unfair on businesses, especially smaller ones.

THat view was reinforced by the committee at its meeting on Tuesday.

Chairman Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said: "We all think this is a step too far and we offer our support to the idea that Cllr Walsh is putting forward.

"We should do what we can to save our businesses from this payment."

Cllr Alison Sharples (L, Marine) said: "THis is annoying because we are trying to get people into our town.

"Doing something like this is not going to help that."

Cllr Wayne Smith (LD, Hotham) said: "For a lot of local businesses, that is a lot of money to find.

"Businesses want those tables and chairs, especially in the nice weather

when people want to sit outside."

He believed the introduction of the licence was a result of the county council having to fill a budget shortfall caused by a cut in the grants it received.

THe committee was told by Jo Davis, its civic and office manager: "Cllr Dr James Walsh (Arun's leader) has written to the county council asking for this licence to be suspended or, at the very least, that discussions should take place and consultations should be carried out."

Cllr Dr Walsh has also pointed out to the county council the business improvement district is in its early days in Bognor Regis and the town's traders needed support rather than an extra financial burden at this time.

Mrs Davis also said Arun had confirmed it had not received any information from the county council about the charge.

"THe matter only came to Arun's attention as a result of photocopied letters being delivered to local businesses," she added.

THe county council has told businesses in Bognor Regis with tables and chairs on the highway outside their premises they are regarded as an obstruction under the Highway Act 1980 and, therefore, illegal.

THe letter states the county council, as the highway authority, is duty bound to ensure licences are in place or that the illegal obstructions are removed so they do not pose a risk.

Business owners are given 14 days to remove the tables and chairs or apply for an annual £520 licence.

Police stage anti-crime event From page one Last Saturday's action was staged with the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District's members. THe owners of its businesses had identified concerns about crimes to the police and those they believed were responsible for them.

THis led the police to focus on a couple of hotspots for crime around the town centre and saw them concentrate their efforts there during the day.

“We have also been making use of our stop and search powers in relation not only to stop people in relation to stolen items but also drugs,” Sgt Coles said.

THe first hour had already seen one individual arrested and put into custody and set to be served with a community protection warning.

A total of 12 of the warnings were due to be imposed. THese inform an individual their behaviour is not allowed and they will be subject to further arrest if they persist.

THis will see them taken to court and where the police will apply for a criminal behaviour order to exclude an individual from an area or specific location or subject them to a curfew.

As part of the day of action, the police staged free bike marking at the railway station to help stop them being stolen.

THe first hour saw 13 cycle owners take advantage of the service as well as the free check-up and minor repairs by Dr Bike, aka Adam Bell.

THose who benefited included Felpham resident Carole Bright and her 13-year-old daughter and son, aged 11.

She said: “THis is a brilliant idea. We have got fairly new bikes. THe children are going to be riding their bikes to school and, hopefully, this is a way of keeping them safe.”

Home plans on show DOZENS of Middleton residents took their first chance to see proposals for a £7m-plus care home.

THe turnout of 75 people in the first 90 minutes of last THursday's exhibition at St Nicholas Church hall pleased the developer, Frontier Estates.

Its 66-bedroom home will replace a disused and repeatedly vandalised poultry farm on land west of Yapton Road. One of the site's neighbours, Chris Alger, said: "It's a big development to have there.

"I am concerned about the number of services which will be required for a 66-bedroom home.

"THere are going to be a lot of medical waste, laundry, and food deliveries as well as visitors.

But any development like this will be good for employment."

Tim Bell, a resident of Juniper Close for more than 20 years, said: "THe place is in a terrible state.

Anything that happens to it has to be a good thing.

"THere is a lot of concern about the trees on the site, three of which have tree protection orders on them, but it looks like they have been taken care of.

"THe site has planning permission for 13 houses

and that would mean at least 26 cars for young families. A home should be less disruptive."

Hugh Coster, of East Avenue, who is an Arun district councillor, said: "Almost anything would be better than the site is at the moment.

"But that does not mean to say that just anything should be built there.

"THe site is in a shocking state at the moment and I'm amazed the county council, which owns it, has allowed it to get into that state."

Frontier Estates' development director Matt Croger said: "People generally prefer the idea of a care home rather than residential housing. THe traffic is mostly outside of peak times and there is little disturbance to the area. THere is also a general awareness of the under-provision of care homes."

All the trees on the site would be kept, he said. THe company expects to submit formal plans to Arun District Council this autumn.

If approval is given, work should start next spring.

THe home will take some 15 months to build to open in late 2021 and will be run by a specialist operator.

` Beach clean-up A FINAL seafront litter pick of the summer around Bognor Regis is taking place tomorrow.

THe last event of the Beauty of the Beach campaign by Southern Water is being held on Felpham seafront.

Arun District Council has teamed up with Spirit FM to promote the campaign to discourage dog fouling, littering, single-use plastic and feeding gulls as part of a package of measures aimed at improving bathing water quality.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "THe first three events went extremely well. THe turnout from members of the public has been phenomenal so far and we would love to see even more people at the final event."

Tomorrow's clean-up will take place from 11am-3pm around Blakes Road.

It will be hosted by presenters from Spirit FM with the aims of engaging with members of the public in the ways they can contribute to a good quality of bathing water.

"We will be handing out goody bags filled with promotional items and encouraging members of the public to engage in a litter-pick.

"THere are children's activities and chances to win prizes to local leisure facilities."

THe campaign is part of a wider package of bathing water enhancement programme measures funded by Southern Water along the seafront between Aldwick and Middleton.

THis has included extra dog poo bins, litter bins and dog/litter signs.

Litter, dog fouling education and enforcement patrols have also taken place along the coastline this summer.

Orhan said: “After having an amazing journey to success, we wanted to offer more food from our culture and did this by converting into a restaurant.

“It’s designed in a way to give that contemporary look as well as still having the underlying Turkish background running throughout.

“We have a wide range of amazing dishes and there is something for everyone.

"From salads to soups, kebabs to desserts - you name it. We have the best and most iconic dishes from Turkey."

As well as expanding in the restaurant side of things, they now also have a bar, fully stocked and ready for the perfect drink to accompany your meal.

The building was spotlessly clean and filled with balloons and music ready for their official last Tuesday.

Orhan made it clear that when opening the restaurant their first priority was ensuring that it is as authentic as it can be.

He said: “This is proper authentic food.

When you eat here you feel like you are Turkish. Everything is Turkish, everything is made there and bought over. My designer was back home and had everything made and designed in that genuine style.”

Even the toilet is like no-other, black tiled flooring and sink combined with an eyecatching gold sink makes even your breaks from the table feel luxurious.

From floor to ceiling, kitchen to toilet, the whole venue is decorated with Turkish furnishings. Even the chairs and tables are imported from overseas.

Window scenes of Istanbul cover the walls, meaning you can enjoy your meals while having views of the iconic Galata Kulesi tower, or overlook Kiz Kulesi, the Maiden's Tower.

Turkish tea is the perfect finish to your meal, particularly when accompanied by some traditional Turkish delight. The golden tea is poured into a small glass and served in a Turkish tea cup, traditional of course.

Orhan said: “I thought it would be nice to have something new for Bognor Regis.

"We already have a good takeaway and something new for the area with good food and good service is just what we need “It is an authentic Turkish restaurant with professional chefs, they’re the best. We've been running for seven years next door in the kebab shop. This building was an Indian takeaway but unfortunately they couldn't run it anymore and closed.

"We took over and grabbed the opportunity to open the new restaurant. It was perfect timing and a perfect opportunity."

Orhan focused on perfecting a quintessential Turkish kitchen. “It was and still is, a family owned business,” he said. “We aim to bring the best of Turkey to Bognor.

“We want our customer to experience and discover the true flavours of the Turkish cuisine. Always keeping quality and consistency at the top of the list.

“This approach made us do amazing things.

It has allowed us to grow quickly and now expand. In a short space of time, we became one of the best places to eat within the area."

His team consists of family members and friends, all of them fully trained professionals.

EXHIBITIONS about the latest proposals for the A27 Arundel bypass will start tonight.

Highways England is staging a series of staffed displays of all the possible options for the £100m-£250m scheme.

THe opening event will take place from 5.30pm-8pm tonight at the Cathedral Centre in London Road, Arundel.

It will be followed by further public consultation events on September 10 at Arundel and September 11 at Houghton and Storrington.

September 14 will see the display at Fontwell Park Racecourse from 10.30am2.30pm before it moves to Coronation Hall in Slindon from 2pm-8pm on September 19.

THe next stop will from 10am to 5pm on September 28 at Walberton Village Hall, followed by two events in Arundel and one in Littlehampton during October.

A Highways England spokesman said: "We announced a preferred route known as Option 5Av3 last year, following public consultation in autumn 2017.

"We then began further developing the design as part of our work towards submitting a formal planning application.

"We discovered new information during the course of this work and, given the significant environmental

sensitivities in the area, even relatively minor changes can have an important impact on overall route assessments.

"We, therefore, want to understand... views on the revised options for the scheme based on the latest available information, which we are presenting through this latest consultation."

An unstaffed display about the scheme will be available during opening hours on September 16 and 17 at Bognor Regis Town Hall and from 10am-5.30pm on October 9 at Yapton Village Hall.

THe current proposals for the bypass date back to a 2015 feasibility study by Highways England.

THis was followed by the initial consultation in the second half of 2017 before the preferred route was announced in May, 2018.

Highways England had to revise its plans after a High Court case by a Binsted resident. Protests were held in the village about the proposal's effect on the South Downs National Park.

After the current consultation, it is expected the latest route will be revealed next year. Further public consultation will follow.

An application for the work should be submitted in 2021 and, if approved, work on site should begin in 2022-23.

Nursery makes new plans for accommodation for workers A FRESH bid has been made for a caravan site at a Pagham nursery.

THe latest application for Newlands Nursery would enable 31 caravans to be placed on site from each February to November. THese would be used to accommodate between 93 and 186 workers at the location in Pagham Road.

A statement by the company's planning agent, Douglas Briggs Partnership, says: "THe number of workers changes as seasonal requirements demand with the maximum number of workers per caravan not to exceed six for welfare reasons."

THe company's current proposal for a certificate of lawfulness for Arun District Council to decide follows its withdrawal in June of its original scheme for year-round seasonal workers' accommodation.

THis led to 84 letters of objection being received by Arun as well as a request by Pagham Parish Council for more details before the application was decided because of the complexity of the law about accommodation for horticultural workers. Facts provided with the latest plan show Newlands Nursery has three growing seasons which it says shows the caravans are needed for ten months.

CLASSIC car fans will take to the road again to help Bognor Regis Motor Club raise money for a life-saving charity.

THe owners of 85 of the historic vehicles have taken all the places in the latest Regis Tour and Picnic event this weekend around some beautiful country routes.

THey are revving to go in marques such as Volvo, Frazer Nash and Alvis in the ninth of the popular annual fundraisers, which is helping the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance.

Club press officer Ali Green said: "THe entry was limited to 85 cars. THis target was full by early April.

"A donation of £25 from every entry will be given to the air ambulance and there will be a raffle at the finish to boost funds for the charity."

THe club is delighted to be able to start once more at Great Ballard School from 10.01am on Sunday after breakfast.

New calendar shows village

` New flats plan A FORMER alcohol rehabilitation centre in Bognor Regis could be converted into flats.

KMP Solutions has asked Arun District Council for planning permission to change the use of the ground floor premises at Clock Walk in High Street.

THe company's planning agent, Yelo Architects, says in a statement: "THe space has been marketed for almost two years and, during that time, it has not been possible to secure a paying tenant for the space, although it was occupied briefly by a non-paying tenant.

"Prior to November, 2017, the unit was let to an alcohol rehabilitation centre run by the NHS for five years.

"However, they left the property late in 2017..."

THe plans propose four studio flats should be formed in the space.

Gift to centre has benefited others

A DONATED defibrillator in Bognor Regis has led to the life-saving devices being installed in five other places.

THe Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street sought help from THe Co-operative Funeralcare branch in North Bersted to see if it could help to pay for the machine.

THe employees were only too happy to help and, with their colleagues in Rose Green and Felpham, donated £950.

THe defibrillator has been put in place to benefit the Age UK West Sussex centre's near 1,200 members who enjoy more than 80 weekly classes.

Its arrival has prompted the charity to secure funds for defibrillators in its Adur, Arun, Crawley, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill centres.

KEEN Pagham photographers have used their skills to create a calendar for the first time.

THe members of Pagham Photographers were asked by the area’s residents’ group to contribute to their latest yearly publication.

THe result is 12 eye-catching views which illustrate the months in the 2020 version of the Pagham & District Residents’ Association calendar. THey include Pagham Ponies, Pagham Harbour and the area’s beach.

Ann Rowles, the association’s chairman, said she was delighted by the outcome.

“It’s been really good having the help of the photographers. THey gave us about 40 photos. THe committee chose the ones to

Sarah Smith, Age UK West Sussex's Bognor Regis manager, said: "Due to the growing numbers in our gym and exercise classes over time, we thought it was prudent to try to get a defibrillator."

She said centre had a good relationship with Angela Austin, the funeral coordinator at the North Bersted branch, and was sure she could help out.

Angela said she was pleased to assist the centre. "It's a real hub. Being part of a regional, independent co-operative, we do our best to support our local community through donations or volunteering so this was a perfect fit as the centre makes a difference to so many people.

"We are lucky to have this centre in Bognor so we were delighted to help them like they help so many others," she said.

Gala returns to light up night to the delight of spectators along seafront SIX-YEAR-OLD Arlan West's winning entry in the Bognor Regis illuminations gala entry was out of this world.

THe Selsey boy's NASA Discovery space shuttle won the first Erik Jack Memorial Trophy for its lit-up electric bike.

Arlan said: "It was fun riding my space ship and it was good. I waved to people as I went past and steered it with one hand."

His mum, Natalie Butterworth, said: "Arlan is over the moon with his win. I didn't tell him there were prizes for the winning entries.

"Arlan is going through an autism diagnosis at the moment but he loves space and looking at the moon and the stars. He has his own telescope."

His mini-Discovery was mainly made from cardboard and papier mache. Crepe paper provided the colour.

"It took us about a month," said Natalie.

"It was a bit of a labour of love trying to fit it on to the electric bike but it's been worth it.

"It's the first time we've entered the gala.

We don't have anything like this in Selsey and I saw a poster for it when we were in the town and decided to take part."

THe trophy was named after the late entertainer Erik Jack and presented by his wife, Melanie Harris.

Jason Passingham, chairman of the gala's organisers, Bognor Regis Seafront Lights, told the crowd: "Erik compered here and he was the voice of Birdman and the Carnival.

"He was basically Mr Entertainment and he gave his life to this town. Unfortunately, he passed away two years ago and we

wanted to start an category for him for an entry which was a bit zany and was the result of someone making an effort."

Another of the winners on Sunday night was a group which has an ever-present record of entering the gala - THe Wonder Girls dance troupe.

Its 50 or so dancers won for best dance troupe for the second gala in a row.

Its founder, Debbie Marsh, said: "We love taking part in this event. THe girls love the night-time parades because they don't wear our uniform and can dress up.

"We really like taking part in the gala because it is in our home town. We have entered every year since I started the troupe 27 years ago on August 4. We will definitely be back again next year. I've already got the costumes planned."

A total of 19 entries took part in the parade from West Park along the seafront, Aldwick Road, West Street, Lennox Street to rejoin the seafront and end at the pier.

It was followed by a colourful and noisy fireworks display from the pier and the night ended with the prize-giving.

Perfect conditions contrasted with the strong winds and heavy rain which caused last year's parade to be scrapped and the fireworks to be delayed until the next night when a small crowd gathered.

Gala organiser Jason Passingham said he was delighted with the parade and the turnout of thousands of spectators.

"Every year, we have to meet stricter health and safety regulations. It's quite stressful and hard work.

"It does make you wonder if it is worth

the bother but when you see people coming out like tonight and all the happy, smiling faces because they are enjoying themselves, then it makes it worthwhile.

"We only had one float among the entries but it's not about 50ft vehicles. It's about the quality of those taking part - and we certainly had a lot of that tonight."

Funds raised on the night will help to pay for new seafront lighting displays.

THe gala has taken place most years since it began in 1978 and has been held for the past 17 years by the seafront lights volunteers to raise money for the displays.

THis year's gala was also filmed by a TV company for the BBC for a documentary series about Bognor Regis which is due to be screened in the autumn.

THe camera crews had followed the build -up to the gala among their filming in the town during several weeks of talking to independent traders and volunteers.

` Music concert REPRISING a concert which they gave in 2017, the Central Band of the Royal British Legion and the Winchester Military Wives Choir will be returning to St Paul’s Church on Saturday, September 14, for a concert promoted by Chichester.

Rotary Club THe club is celebrating its centenary, having been chartered in May, 1920, following its first meeting in December, 1919.

THe Central Band, under its conductor, Capt David Cole, took part in June’s D-Day commemorations and accompanied the veterans to France on Boudicca. THey next played at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon and recently completed a week-long series of concerts in Eastbourne.

THe Winchester Military Wives Choir was founded in 2014 and as well as giving many perormances locally has taken part in the West End production of “Soldier On” and helped with the recording of “Remember”, the Military Wives’ contribution to the centenary celebrations of the end of World War One. With Ricky’s help, the Goodwood event raised more than £10,000 for Buttle UK – a grant-giving charity that provides vulnerable children and young people with ‘chances for children’ grants up to £2,000 to help them overcome crisis and create a better future for themselves Jon’s event, which has been held in recent years at the Top Gear Test Track in Dunsfold, as well as raising money for the children, was also designed to give a taster for the Italian Job rally which takes place each year in Italy during October.

Ricky joined 143 Mini cars of all shapes, ages and sizes to drive around the track and carry out various navigational tasks under the watchful eyes of Freddie and Jon. It was for Ricky, who is a self-confessed petrol head, the first time at Goodwood.

By all accounts, it certainly won’t be his last.

Delight at Men's Shed

By Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk ACTIVE members of a Bognor Regis group have celebrated being one of the top teams in a community challenge.

THe town’s Men’s Shed finished third in the first Beat the Street giant walking, running and cycle game to be held along coastal West Sussex.

Residents across Bognor Regis, Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham-by-Sea and Littlehampton were a familiar sight as they tapped special Beat Boxes on lamp-posts around the area.

THe 16 members in the Men’s Shed did better than most as they competed against nearly 30 other teams.

One of them, mum-of-three Kerry Clarke, joined the team to support her dad, Cyril.

She said: “Beat the Street was brilliant.

It got the kids out and not home playing on X-Boxes. My daughter played for her school, St Mary’s Catholic Primary, so my 14-year-old son and I joined Bognor Regis Men’s Shed.

“We cycled and walked and never thought we’d go so far. It was good fun and we were doing something as a family, which was amazing.”

Cyril, 72, said: “It gave us some freedom.

We had fun and met new people and I spent time with my daughter. It gave me something to focus on.”

For Cyril, the men’s shed, in Dickinson Place, has been a huge support. Its members hammer, saw and chop to turn unwanted items into useful objects.

Cyril has recently moved to the town and also has early onset dementia.

THe men’s shed has helped support him and provided a place where he can work with wood and be part of an active

community which supports each other.”

In just six months, the men’s shed has grown to 46 members with a small and dedicated team of volunteers.

Chairman Jim Torrent was also among those who signed up to Beat the Street.

“I bought a bike last year and it was a great way to get out and about,” he said.

“I planned my route around the Beat Boxes and got to bits of Bognor Regis I wouldn’t normally go to.

“I got my confidence back to cycle again and it was a great achievement for us.”

Adam Bell, its treasurer, said: “It was fairly addictive. Once you’d tapped one box, you wanted to go on that bit further to the next.”

THe winning team in Beat the Street was Epic Training, with a total of 6,000 miles during the six-week initiative.

More than 16,000 residents took part and travelled 146,000 miles.

Beat the Street was delivered by Intelligent Health and funded by a range of organisations. Players have been encouraged to keep hold of their cards for further campaigns.

Golf day success A MEMORIAL fund inspired by a Felpham teenager is closing in on raising £100,000.

THe staggering total in just ten years has become a realistic target after the success of the latest golf tournament in memory of Daniel Hoare.

THe eighth staging of the popular event took place at Bognor Regis Golf Club in Sunday’s glorious sunshine.

A total of 148 golfers took part.

THey were joined by hundreds more supporters for a barbecue and live band performance in the club.

Daniel’s father, Don Hoare, said: “It was an unbelievable day. THe weather was absolutely superb, especially after it was so abysmal last year.

“I'm hoping it was our most successful event and raised £10,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

“THis will make the total we have raised £66,000 and that brings £100,000 into view. If we can do that in ten years, it would be an incredible amount.

“THe event seems to be gathering

momentum. I thought it would be a success for one or two years and it would fade away as these things can do.

“But, having spoken to a lot of his friends, who are now 26 and 27, they will not leave it alone. THey are all saying they will see us next year.

“It is the most incredible feeling for Jackie, Daniel’s mother, and I and it makes us very proud.”

As reported, Daniel was just 18 when he died suddenly from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in November, 2011.

Daniel was a keen sportsman who had played golf for Sussex. His friends, James Mclean and James Ashman, are heavily involved in arranging the golf tournament.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition in which a portion of the heart becomes thickened without an obvious cause. THis results in the heart being less able to pump blood effectively.

Daniel died suddenly when he was running for a train after he had been studying at college.

Festival on a high as kite fliers do best despite tricky weather KITE fliers have termed their time in Bognor Regis as the best in Britain.

THe latest giant kite extravaganza saw record numbers taking part and watching.

THis sent the reputation of the threeday festival soaring as high as some of the models on show at King George V Playing Field in Felpham to thousands of people.

Bognor Regis Kite Fliers founder Dave Mitchell, and one of those who started the free festival, said: "THe atmosphere is unique to this festival.

"It's really positive and all the kite fliers are made welcome by the public and it makes them want to come back again.

"Saturday night saw 20 LED kites stage the largest illuminated display I know of

"THe lighting is controlled by computer and they looked great at the same time as the Abbastars concert was taking place."

THe kite fliers came from around the UK, with three from Wales and others from Kent, Avon, the Midlands and Essex.

Latecomers from Bedford and Suffolk took the total number to some 85. THey included international and top UK fliers.

Kite flying took place throughout the bank holiday weekend, though the light easterly winds of some 7mph on Sunday and Monday led to some of the larger models being grounded.

But there was still plenty to see among those which did take to the sky.

THey included the four-piece L-Katz team with a kite ballet to music which ranged from Aerosmith's Fly Away From Here to a theme from Game of THrones.

THe squad comprises two kite-flying pairs - the Flying Fish couple of Lex Kraaijeveld and Irma Adriaanse, from Southampton, who have a number one UK ranking for dual-line pair kite flying, and Chichester couple, Pea Patel and Lisa Burnett, known as Twisted Bridle.

Pea said they had been flying as a team together for two years. "We both practise separately each Saturday and then practise all together on Sundays.

"A lot of work goes into flying four kites at once to music and it feels great when we pull it off," he said.

"It's enjoyable. It takes you away from all your Monday to Friday worries.

"Lisa suffers from osteoarthritis and the

adrenaline and endorphins she gets from flying kites helps to dissipate the pain."

Lex said: "It takes so much concentration you don't have the space in your brain left to concentrate on anything else.

"We came to the first of these festivals and this one is much better than having it staged at West Park."

Lisa's son, Jaiden Burnett, nine, was the youngest kite flier in the main arena to have his own display.

Brighton Kite Flyers were also present and needed special permission from the Civil Aviation Authority to send some of their delta multi-coloured models up to 600ft in the air.

One of their members, John Elvin, said: "It's a relaxing way of doing something at weekends. I love it. I love watching the kites. THe best of it is to see the reaction of the public. I enjoying hearing them talk about the kites."

Also among the group's kites was the 12m long white horse, Pegasus, which takes other kites to get it airborne.

THe other kites on display came in all shapes, sizes and colours and reached different heights in the sky.

Even with some of the kites unable to fly, plenty of attractions continued on the ground for visitors of all ages.

THe Resonance collection of aeolian wind harps, bamboo pipes, chimes and whistles still sounded to the delight of those nearby.

Pagham Ponies were present as well as Rep Tylers, a children's funfair, and a mix of stalls and food and drink outlets.

As well as Abbastars, stage acts were performed by magician Nick Clark and singers Heather and Dave.

THis was the fifth festival and the second at the playing field in Summerley Lane.

Joint founder Jan Malpas said: "We've had thousands during the weekend, including 500 for the Abba tribute. THe singers went among the audience and it was brilliant.

"People have been coming and going all day and it has just been unbelievable.

We've had nothing but praise and we want to come back again next year.

"We've got the bank holiday, we've got the location, we've got the fliers and we've got people who want to come out and enjoy themselves. It couldn't be better."

Dear Editor, THE sketch of Valhalla (Bognor Regis Post, August 16 in Sylvia Endacott's Changing Times), pictured left - one of the pair of iconic buildings by the roundabout where the High Street and Lyon Street meet - shows how the repainting of the magnificent exterior restored the vitality of the whole area around. Other localities have benefited similarly.

I believe that, if it is not too late, rather than selecting small areas of Bognor Regis for intensive regeneration with a budget of £4m, the simple uplift of a coat of paint would give the whole town the refreshment it needs.

THis would attract and give pleasure to residents and visitors alike throughout the year in a simpler and more cost-effective way.

I wonder if it would be possible to introduce a scheme in central Bognor Regis.

Perhaps it could be trialled in a conservation area and carefully administered, whereby property owners could reclaim perhaps 50 per cent of the cost of (exterior) paint on completion of their own house repainting through a token scheme, with local paint suppliers boosting their sales.

In this way, the regeneration would become a joint effort and have the additional value of community involvement.

Dear Editor, I AM writing with reference to your article, 'Objections to homes plans', published in the Bognor Regis Post on August 1.

We are the planning agents for the application covered by your article and write with an update that your readers may find interesting.

Taking on board the comments of Pagham Parish Council, and following a meeting we held with local residents of Mill Farm, the applicant has made amendments to the scheme.

Firstly, one of the proposed houses has been replaced with a bungalow to meet the request of the parish council for more bungalows on the site.

Secondly, the unpopular traffic light system mentioned in your article has been removed altogether.

It was considered as an option but our transport statement submitted to the local highways authority makes clear that the vehicle access is suitable and safe without traffic lights (once the modern extension to the hotel building has been demolished) and so the application is progressing on that

basis.

We would also like to add that the site will offer an attractive range of housing types for locals aspiring to own their own home and will include one of the shortest walks to the pub in Pagham village.

Graham focuses on gardens' appeal Rhythms and Riffs West Dean College (garden entrance), West Dean PO18 0RX Until September 4, 10am - 5pm A FUNDRAISING appeal for the restoration of the magnificent Victorian glasshouses at West Dean Gardens will benefit from an exhibition of photographs in THe Edward James Studios at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.

Rhythms and Riffs comprises images taken by Graham Murrell, who is a former head of photography at the prestigious Central St Martins College of Art in London.

For the past couple of years, he has been casting a

discerning eye over West Dean Gardens and later within the house.

In the gardens, he has been drawn to photograph using medium format film and traditional processes the visual notes and chords that together comprise the wonderful composition created over the past 29 years.

In the house he has referred to its Surrealist past in homage to the movement supported and encouraged

by Edward James, who lived in the house and was a patron of the arts.

THis is a selling exhibition with all proceeds in support of the West Dean Gardens Glasshouse Appeal. Entry is free.

THe Grade II Listed glasshouses, built during the 1890s by Foster and Pearson, were at the forefront of

Victorian technology. Today, they provide a nursery to almost every plant that makes its way into the gardens and somewhere to learn about growing and looking after plants.

After the Great Storm of 1987, one of the first jobs was to restore all 13 glasshouses to full working order. Subsequently, former head gardeners Jim Buckland and Sarah Wain re-created 26 different growing environments within the glasshouses, from traditional figs and melons to new and exotic red hot chillies.

THirty years on and, with improved techniques in restoration techniques, just four glasshouses are left to repair and it is hoped to finish all of these by 2020 but £29,000 is needed to complete these works.

THe autumn series begins with the cathedral’s own assistant organist, Timothy Ravalde who will play Louis Vierne’s Symphony No. 2 composed in 1902.

Timothy has been Assistant Organist since 2010, accompanying the daily services, assisting with the

training of the choir, and appearing on numerous recordings and broadcasts. Since 2011 he has also been the musical director of Fernhurst Choral Society with whom he has conducted a wide range of the choral and oratorio repertoire.

Other concerts in the series which run until November 19, feature Chichester pianist Maria Luc; Frederick Stocken, organist and assistant director of music at St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral, whose ‘Chichester Service’ was commissioned for the Southern Cathedrals Festival held in the city this summer; and a host of other diverse and talented musicians performing on a range of instruments.

So why not ‘do lunch’ with a difference and experience wonderful music in the magnificent setting of the cathedral? Coffee is available at no extra charge for concert-goers, and you can even bring a sandwich! THe concerts are free, with a retiring collection.

Event. Beauty of the Beach.

Felpham beach, near Sea Road, is the venue for the grand finale beach clean and community event on Saturday, August 31, from 11am to 3pm.

Organised by radio station Spirit FM with Arun District Council and Southern Water, everyone is welcome to join the campaign focused on looking after the area's beaches and bathing water. THe event will end with a grand final beach clean. During the day, there will be a pebble decoration competition where children can bring along their own decorated pebble or visit our decoration station where we’ll have everything you need to decorate a pebble on the day.

Fontwell Racecourse is the venue for a film night under the stars with this year's mega-hit Queen and Freddie Mercury bio-pic being shown on a giant screen. THe film traces the meteoric rise of the band through

Event. Historic Life Weekend: Textiles. Find out about the production of textiles, with a focus on wool and flax, as well as the later stages of spinning, weaving, braiding and natural dyeing at the Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton. THere is much to inspire modern makers from the skills of the past. Some of the items made by the historic clothing project at the museum over the last 12 years stewarded by members of the group will bbe on display, as well as items worn by the demonstrators around the museum site.

A great day out for the whole family to see, do and explore. During the event, which will run from 11am-5pm on both Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, the museum's buildings and site will be open throughout with usual entry fees applying.

THe Roman era has inspired storytellers from William Shakespeare to Stanley Kubrick. THis exhibition brings together an outstanding collection of

Town set for friendly folk takeover next month ALL the best in folk music will be present in Bognor Regis next month.

THe town’s latest Southdowns Folk Festival promises another four days of toe-tapping fingerstrumming fun from September 19-22.

THe organisers have secured one of the biggest names in the genre, Lindisfarne, as the highlight of their concerts.

THe enduring power of their name – forever linked with Fog on the Tyne and other hits - has seen tickets for their performance at the Regis Centre snapped up.

But there are plenty of other top performers ready to capture the ears of the audiences in the town’s venue.

THe appeal of the festival also lies in the mass of open-air folk, roots, acoustic music and dance on show to spread the word and the skills.

Festival chairman Roger Nash said: “I’m sure

this year’s festival will be better than any of our previous events.

“THis will be our seventh festival and each previous one has surpassed our hopes and expectations.

“THe festival’s place in the British folk scene can be shown by our ability to attract great musicians like Lindisfarne as well as dozens of others to make the event the biggest annual music attraction in Bognor Regis – and everyone is invited.”

A staggering 117 different performances and events make up the 2019 festival. THeir curtain raiser is THe Young ‘Uns, with the Ballard of Johnny Longstaff at 7.30pm on THursday, September 19, at the Regis Centre.

From then on, it’s a case of folk, folk, folk everywhere you go in and around the town centre.

Bognor Regis Pride cancelled? Think again…

PRIDE will go ahead tomorrow after organisers refused to be put back in the closet and have taken an alternative approach to the original plans.

Bognor Regis will make history on Saturday as it hosts its first ever free Pride Party at the Legends Pier.

THis will also be the first time any family

event has been held within the Arun district which aims to help promote, support and celebrate diverse LGBTQ+ community, their families, friends and their allies.

Following a social media outcry at the recent cancellation of Bognor Regis Pride, the main event organiser and LGBT+ ally, Sarah Boote-Coote, remained driven to help provide a free event where individuals may feel accepted to express the person they are without prejudice or persecution.

“Pride, Bognor Regis was formed to fill the gap for our LGBT+ community in Bognor Regis. When it became apparent that we were unable to fulfil our aim for the large Pride event we had hoped for this year, we were exceptionally disappointed and by reading comments on social media, so was our town.

"Because of this outpouring and in the spirit of the Pride moment, we decided the main Pride day, August 31, will not pass by without recognition.

"THe idea of a Pride Party on the Pier was born thanks to sponsors, Bognor Regis Post, and Chichester Post and Coastline, Legends Pier Bar agreed to host the day at their family sports and entertainment."

THis is a free family event where absolutely everyone is welcome without any discrimination of age, sexuality, gender or age.

Pride is about diversity, inclusion and the respect of expression. THere is a very diverse community in a lovely seaside town, and it will be great to finally see everyone party together.

THere are some fantastic acts to enjoy, all

free, plus rainbow face art and hair colouring to really get everyone into the mood of the day.

Organisers have said that visitors should feel free to dress to express and impress.

Pride Party on the pier will be a fantastic event for Bognor Regis held between 2pm and 10pm.

Earlier this year, a £10,000 lottery grant was successfully secured for the two-day event but this was unfortunately returned.

Organisers are delighted to announce that they have been successful in another bid and have received a £5,000 grant from the lottery to build a website and establish a monthly event at different venues around the town. THe aim will be to provide the LGBT+ community group for social events and more.

THe goal during this event will be to try to start raising the money required for Pride 2020 and funds to help start addressing the social isolation issues, allowing the LGBT+ community group to find peer support and generally have fun. Organisers say they hope future events will start in September and every month thereafter leading up to the Pride event next summer.

All of this has been achieved in such a short space of time despite having a few disappointments along the way.

INSPIRATION FOR KIA XCEED REVEALED Kia Motors has revealed the background to the creation of the all-new Kia XCeed urban crossover. Speaking to camera for a new short film, published by Kia, members of the brand’s European design team outline how the new

model came into being for the first time.

THe Kia XCeed is the latest model to join the Ceed line-up, alongside the new five-door hatchback, Sportswagon and ProCeed shooting brake. THe full story of the

Ceed’s three-generation evolution will be revealed in a new limitedrun book, due to be released later this year, including how the allnew Kia XCeed and ProCeed came to life.

President of Design for Kia Motors Europe, oversaw the design of the new Ceed range, a process in which the brand considered a range of options to replace the previous three-door pro_cee’d hatchback.

“While creating the next ProCeed, we realised that there could be a fourth body type within the Ceed line-up. THis became the Kia XCeed,” says Guillaume. “THe beauty of the project was that we never originally set out to create a crossover.”

Stylish, expressive and modern in design, the Kia XCeed represents a sporty alternative to traditional SUVs. More athletic in appearance than its taller rivals, the new model offers something different to the other models in the Ceed range.

THe only body panels carried over from its five-door hatchback sibling are the front doors.

THe Kia XCeed’s cab-rearward silhouette and fastback tailgate angle lend the design a coupélike twist, matched by a relatively long bonnet. While the wheelbase remains the same as other models in the Ceed line-up (2,650 mm), the Kia XCeed’s front and rear overhangs are extended over the five-door hatchback model by 25

mm at the front (to 905 mm) and 60 mm at the rear (to 840 mm). A steeply-angled fastback tailgate, and a rear ‘deck’ trailing edge which sits 60 mm higher than that of the Ceed five-door hatchback, enhances its crossover aesthetic.

THe car’s elevated ride height and body also present the same robust image that attracts buyers to the other SUVs in Kia’s product portfolio. THe Kia XCeed’s ground clearance is 172 mm on 16-inch wheels and 184 mm on 18-inch wheels, a rise of up to 42 mm over the Ceed five-door hatchback.

Wheel arch and side sill cladding and silver roof rails lend the car a tougher, SUV-like presence, with the metallic valance in the rear bumper enhancing this effect.

Boulay adds: “It’s elevated, but it’s not an SUV. It’s a car with a high seating position, but it’s somehow much more coupé-oriented. It’s a solution for those people who don’t want a larger, more imposing SUV, particularly in the town and city.”

Teenagers galore, party nights and hangovers seem to be the norm, as well as sandy white beaches, incredible surfing conditions, cycling everywhere and fresh mussels daily to tantalise the taste buds.

Of course, this is accompanied with a few glasses of French white wine (yes it’s all about the balance!) and meeting new people. It seems to have been the perfect mix to keep everyone happy.

It’s been an activity laden, sundrenched, 12 days and I don’t want it to end. For me, the best part of this holiday has been spending time without any appointments and time restrictions, allowing conversations and laughter to flow endlessly.

It never ceases to amaze me how much we all need to unwind and how many days it takes to actually feel relaxed.

But did you know a change of scenery can offer you so much more than just a vacation?

According to studies, taking just one holiday a year can re set your batteries so much it can reduce your risk of heart attack by 30 per cent.

Meeting new people, indulging in new cultures and putting yourself outside of your comfort zone can put a halt to your everyday stresses.

THe reason being - we all get so bogged

down by everyday tasks and issues that we can’t think outside the box. When we remove ourselves literally from our routines and our realities, we get a totally different perspective on what’s really important in our lives.

THis allows us to reset and recharge in a way that is priceless so when we do go back to work we can handle tasks with a new sense of vigour and enthusiasm.

A change in scenery is like therapy for your soul and mental wellbeing gets a massive boost when you meet new people, and challenge yourselves to new activities and just generally become more active during your day.

Even the anticipation of a vacation can lift the mood, and the actual experiences can create lasting feelings of happiness and new memories that allow us to feel good, happy and satisfied with life.

It can also strengthen relationships when you all experience the same things, and by expanding our horizons it creates more openness and emotional and physical calmness.

Even taking yourself off somewhere different for one day can have this effect on your wellbeing, so if your holidays are over for this summer, make sure you have some nice trips planned over the coming weeks.

It doesn’t have to be expensive or exotic, but just away from your daily routine. A bike ride, a boat trip, a walk in the forest.

Whatever it is, make time to change your world. Even if it’s just for a few hours. Break your patterns and experience something new and see what happens.

REAL ale and great folk will again combine at one of Bognor Regis' biggest annual events.

THis year's Southdowns Folk & Ukulele Festival next month will feature a real ale event alongside the popular musical offerings.

THe Dog & Duck, in Norfolk Street, has joined with Lodsworth-based Langhams Brewery to offer a range of award-winning ales over the three days from September 19 to 22.

Jamie Boyle, from the pub, said: "We are delighted to be hosting this celebration as part of the seventh popular Bognor Regis town centre festival and especially pleased to be showcasing some of Langham's great ales BEFRIENDER Harvey Monaghan has spoken about his delight in helping a child in care.

Bognor Regis resident Harvey, pictured above, is among those who take part in West Sussex County Council's successful befriending scheme.

Some 70 adults volunteer as independent visitors and pair up with a young person aged between eight and 18 to spend time together.

Harvey, 50, has been meeting up with a young person for the past 14 months.

He said: "I'm really lucky because we're very like-minded.

THe young person I'm with is very outgoing and active.

"Every month or six weeks we meet up and we've done everything from cycling to badminton to climbing.

"I like the fact that we are choosing to spend our time with a young person really means a lot to them and we've become really good friends."

Being reliable and having a positive outlook are essential qualities for those considering joining the independent visitor scheme, said Harvey.

THe county council is looking to build upon the success of the scheme by recruiting further volunteers to help it expand.

Two information evenings are being held on September 4 at Crawley Library and on November 13 at Centenary House in Worthing. Both take place at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

Some independent visitors will be present to answer any questions about volunteering, training and the assessment process.

Applications are also open online at: westsussex.gov.uk/ independentvisitor Activities enjoyed by the independent visitors and the young people they meet are very much child-led.

It is often quality time which can be spent simply walking, shopping or going for a coffee together. One child in care asked her befriender to listen to her reading to help her for school.

Cllr Paul Marshall, the county council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "Our fantastic volunteers make such a difference to the lives of the children they are matched with.

"It is so worthwhile and we now need more people who enjoy spending time with a young person to help us grow the hugely successful scheme further."

THe shoppers who said the country's Brexit on October 31 should be stopped numbered 75 at a stand set up by the area's branch of the European Movement compared to the five against.

THe two-hour pro EU campaign took place on a Saturday this month at the northern end of the London Road precinct.

THe aim was to gather support for a confirmation vote on the final Brexit deal and to test the mood and willingness of Bognor Regis residents to change their minds. THis was measured on the Brexit mood-o-meter.

One of the campaigners, Arnold Elliott, said: "It is abundantly clear that no deal will negatively affect the lives of millions of British citizens.

"Yet (Prime Minister) Boris Johnson insists on hurtling us towards a no deal crash-out, regardless of the consequences.

"People must be allowed to have a final say on what was promised at the referendum - a no deal Brexit was never mentioned."

Passers-by were also asked their mood about the situation - 32 were angry, 23 worried, 18 sad, 17 depressed as opposed to three who were happy, three bored, one optimistic and none excited.

TOWN football mascot Rocky the Bear is set for his TV debut as he makes a bid for stardom.

THe fan favourite of Bognor Regis Town FC, pictured below by Tommy McMillan, has been called up to appear on the Saturday night prime-time show, In For A Penny. He could well win over a new army of fans given that the show, developed from telly royalty Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway series.

Rocks' general manager Simon Cook said: "ITV got in touch and asked if they can borrow Rocky for filming for a couple of days, and we've allowed him to go - but only on loan.

"THe production crew collected Rocky and took him to a location just a goal kick from Nyewood Lane.

"It all sounds like a bundle of fun. We're not sure when it will be screened but it's one to watch out for."

Simon said Rocky could be about to hit the showbusiness big time as well as appearing before hundreds of fans at the club's Nyewood Lane ground.

"THis could easily be his path to fame," Simon joked. "He's already a big star in our eyes and, at home games, he is always a big hit with fans.

"And once the great British public see what a wonderful bear he is, I am sure they'll take to him and demand he gets his own show."

Rosalind Laker captured area's history in print Much-loved author enjoyed a worldwide following THROUGHOUT the time that I have been involved with local history in Bognor Regis, one name has kept recurring - that of Rosalind Laker, a world-renowned authoress who has produced in excess of 40 books worldwide.

However, for many people, the name may have no real significance in Bognor Regis, other than for her excellent historical novels.

Known locally as Barbara Ovstedal, she sadly died on Friday, November 23, 2012, leaving a gap not only within her family, but in Bognor Regis and also within her world-wide readership, which had recently expanded as her book list was translated into Russian.

Born Barbara Geils, her grandfather, Frederick W. Jenkins came to Bognor from Eastbourne to run his family business and he brought with him the bathing machines, which the family organised from their builder’s yard in Longford Road.

He constructed this road in 1909 through open fields on behalf of Bognor Urban District Council at a cost of £895. THe horses, for the machines, were maintained at Shripney and taken to Bognor beach on June 1 each year.

Frederick Jenkins and another local trader the chemist, CT Cooper, of West Street, became backers for the new cinema opening in 1919 – the Picturedrome.

THe first manager was Frederick’s son-inlaw, John Douglas Geils, who married their daughter, Ethel Jenkins, and they held their

reception at the Picturedrome. Barbara’s newly married parents had planned to return to John’s Canadian home, where he had learned about the cinema business in Winnipeg. With this background, Barbara soon developed an early interest in her home town.

She was educated at Chichester High School for Girls, going on to attend Worthing Art School to study dress design. During this time, she had five of her designs made up by Norman Hartnell, the Queen’s dress designer.

Her journeys to Worthing by train during the war were in fact, quite hazardous, even being machined gunned on one occasion.

On leaving college, Barbara was to obtain employment in the Lec munitions factory, and similar to many people in the town had another task, that of fire watching. For her shift, Barbara was able to watch over our skies from the relative safety of the roof of the Reynolds store in the High Street.

Like so many other Bognorians of the time, Barbara attended the Pavilion dance hall and it was here in 1944 she met a Norwegian airman who was to become her husband.

Inge and Barbara married in St John’s Church in London Road and later that year they moved to Norway, returning to Bognor Regis years later. THe couple had two children, a son, Paul, and a daughter, Susan.

home, she resumed her childhood interest in writing, which had begun when she was 10.

Investing £5 in an old typewriter she started writing, only changing to a computer much later in her life.

She received much local encouragement from that other name synonymous with writing in Bognor Regis, Gerard Young.

Initially, she wrote articles and short stories for magazines.

It was in 1970 and learning that Hotham Park House was under threat of demolition that she wrote her first novel, Sovereign’s Key, which told the historical story of the house and its importance to the town.

She wrote a book in 1972 based on the town’s history and called Shripney Lady.

At a local history society meeting she told members about her past involvement in the January 18 ceremony at South Bersted Church, where a wreath was laid on the grave of Sir Richard Hotham, the town's founder.

Barbara asked if the society could possibly reinstate this event, which had lapsed over a number of years. Its members took up this challenge and restarted the annual event which still continues today.

For many years, Barbara and Inge had at their home a blue and white-striped bathing machine. THis was saved from a local orchard being used as a garden shed in Eastergate belonging to Cecil Walling, who drove the well-known Silver Queen bus.

Barbara asked if I would like to see it one Easter, to which I eagerly replied, ‘Yes please.’

I had been interested in these machines, and this visit only cemented my interest and Barbara and I would swap information regarding these machines over the years.

To stand beside this machine, which had for many years stood on Bognor beach was a great thrill, and Barbara had even placed a

Victorian bathing costume and a small mirror in the machine to recreate its use in Victorian times. We sat in the machine for quite a while chatting and soaking up the atmosphere.

THis machine is now awaiting its final destination next summer, at the Bognor Regis Local History Museum, West Street, Bognor Regis. It is machine number 23, to the right of the picture.

Her historical novels covered such diverse subjects as Banners of Silk – the fashion world of Paris in the 1800s, THe Jewelled Path – the life and times of Chippendale, THe Golden Tulip – Dutch painting in the 17th century.

Locally, we have not been left out. One book, Circle of Pearls, centres on the fortunes of a Pallister family in Chichester during the period 1641 to 1723.

Bognor Regis has also been benefited from her writing skills. THe Warwyck family was to form the basis for her trilogy about a family living in Easthampton, a seaside resort in 1882, which was also preparing for the arrival of the railway and was based on the growth of Eastbourne and Hothamton. Many of her wonderful publications were based on familiar places - Bognor Regis, Chichester and, of course, her beloved Norway.

When I was involved with the local history society and its former museum in Hotham Park, I contacted Barbara to ask if she would kindly open it one season. She replied: “Only if you can’t find anyone more important."

When she arrived for the ceremony, we were to learn that she had just returned from America where she had appeared on the popular Ed Sullivan Show.

We never did find anyone more important than Barbara to open the museum that year!

THis true Bognorian lady is sadly missed by all who knew her but is now remembered on a Facebook page - Rosalind Laker Novelist.

City look to continue their fine start to the season

A place in that round was thanks to a convincing victory in south east London against Southern Counties East Division One side Bridon Ropes.

Blakely still waiting for a win CHICHESTER City Ladies first team manager Sadie Blakely is hoping a double header will give her chance to break the losing start to life at the Oaklands Park helm.

THe transition to the dugout from between the sticks has not gone as smoothly as hoped for the former goalkeeper.

After a summer of change at the club, Chi have begun the new National Southern Premier season with an opening day defeat in the league followed by a 3-1 loss at home to Cambridge City in the League Cup last time out.

Chi now have the perfect opportunity to get their season back on track with a tough trip to former Super League side Yeovil on Sunday (2pm) followed by a midweek home derby against Crawley Wasps on Wednesday (7.45pm).

City will take heart from a positive second half display against Cambridge when captain Megan Fox scored a 25-yeard stunner to reduce the deficit.

But the damage had already been done by that point as the lower league opponents took charge of the match with three fortuitous goals.

Daren Pearce's young team have been in good form to start the season, sitting sixth in the league table.

Athletics CHICHESTER Runner James Baker has broken yet another record - this time clocking up his 200th win in a road race.

THe multi-terrain athlete won all five races of the Gosport 5k series this summer to reach the milestone.

Baker was made to work for it in the final of those events, losing the lead before the 4k mark before sprinting through to take the finishing tape in 16 minutes 4 seconds.

Since then, he has also broken the course record of the Alice Holt Forest park run in Hampshire, knocking seven seconds off the mark he set two years ago to finish in 16:17.

THen he was one of four to complete the Sussex 10,000

metre championships, finishing in 33 minutes 36.

Elsewhere, a squad of 16 Chichester Athletics members went to Swindon on Saturday, August 17, for the fifth and final match of the Southern Athletics League.

THe cohort did the club proud against some very strong opposition with many doing a number of events during the long day of track and field activity.

THe club are sitting seventh in the 12 team Division THree South West after winning 15 points.

THis is way behind leaders City of Portsmouth but does put them in front of Havant, Andover and Poole Runners.

Stallard leads TZ home at Arundel AN incredibly warm weekend did not halt the Bognor Tone Zone crew from hitting their stride as dozens raced in events around the world.

By far the biggest turn out for those in blue and orange vests was the hilly Arundel 10k.

Despite temperatures nearing 30C, members managed to nail some sizzling times.

THe club had the biggest turnout at the event again, with 32 different runners competing.

Juliet Stallard claimed first lady in an impressive time of 43 minutes 41 seconds, just ahead of good friend Jess THomson who was second in a time of 44:02.

Duncan Stephenson-Gill timed his to perfection with a 45 minute flat. Allen Porter somehow managed a personal best on the tough course with a time of 47:13, with Carolyn Stapley hot on his heels in 47:53 and third in her category.

Ian Bayley, Josey Faggetter, Gary Pidgeon, Donna Strowger, Natalie Tribe, Peter Ramsdale and Andy Miles all ran solid races to finish under 55 minutes.

Marzena Sowinska, Kirstee Porter and Lucy Trait all finished close together in times of 55

minutes.

Coach Stuart THomson does what he does best and ran with a fellow club member helping them all the way.

THomson and Karen Vilday finished in 1 hour 2 minutes, just ahead of Zoe Hemes, Paul Wells and Lesley Ward who finished 1st in her category.

Elle Matthews, Sam Lee and Chris Seaton crossed in 1 hour 7 minutes while friends Charlotte Seaton and Debi Haddleton finishing together in 1 hour 9 minutes.

All in all, it was an excellent showing from all associated with the club, with a number of personal targets being beaten.

On the outskirts of Worcester, Michelle Lloyd and Lea Hodgkins were at the Pershore Plum 10k, where unlike other races you receive a plum as well as a medal for finishing.

Lloyd finished in 1 hour 1 minute with Hodgkins not far behind in 1 hour 8 minutes.

Away from a blisteringly warm Blighty, over in the United States was the Lighthouse 5k, where Sarah Zacal flew the flag and stormed through to break the tape as first lady.

Zacal was over the moon to finish 1st and in a time of 22.14!

Bognor are one win from Premier return

Middleton aim for the top half MIDDLETON CC will want to end their season on a high - with Sean Heather's side still in with a sniff of landing a top three finish.

After a fine first three months of the season, the Sea Lane club have stalled in recent weeks.

A 116-run defeat to champions elect Roffey last weekend makes it three games in a row without a win for Middleton.

THat run of form at the crucial part of the campaign has seen Heather's side slip from third down to sixth in the ten team Sussex Premier Division.

THe club end their season tomorrow with a trip to already relegated Mayfield (11.30am).

With only 13 points separating Middleton from THree Bridges in third, Heather's side know that a 30 point victory could propel them back up to the spots they have occupied for much of the campaign.

Heather knows his side will need to start the match on the front foot, something they struggled to do against a very strong Roffey side at Sea Lane last weekend.

After winning the toss, the visitors very quickly set about the home side's attack with openers THeo Rivers (39) and Ben Manenti (69) putting on 109 for the first wicket.

Roffey's middle order continued to keep up the pressure on Middleton's attack, despite Heather chopping and changing his bowlers frequently.

Rohit Jagota (47), Mike Norris (46) and Matt Davies (32) all contributed, propelling the visitors beyond the 250 mark.

But the home side rallied with Russell Talman (3-40) and Matthew Reynolds (4-44) reducing Roffey from 257-4 to a final score of 288-9 off their 50 overs.

In reply, Middleton failed to really get going. Heather (29) and Mahesh Rawat (41) did their bit with the bat to try to keep the home side up with the run rate.

But once the Indian overseas player went with the score at 1527 there was only ever going to be one winner.

Middleton were eventually dismissed for 172 off 38.3 overs.

BOGNOR Regis CC are just one victory away from securing promotion back to the top tier of Sussex County League cricket.

With just one game of the season to go, Ryan Maskell's side sit second in Division Two, just two points clear of Haywards Heath in third.

Standing in the way of Bognor's return to the top tier is fourth-place St James's Montefiore, who themselves still hold a long shot of sneaking into one of two promotion spots.

Having pieced together an excellent run of form in the second half of the season, Bognor will be favourites for the game at Ditchling - but they will know the home side will be up for the fight for the match tomorrow (12.30pm), with St James's losing just once in the their last five.

Bognor ensured their promotion fate rests in their own hands when they comfortably defeated Chichester Priory Park by nine wickets at the Regis Oval last time out.

After putting the visitors into bat, Bognor wasted no time in making inroads into the Chi line up.

Only Matthew Bennison (48) showed any resistance as a good team effort saw Priory bowled out for 127 within 45 overs.

Left armer Joe Ashmore (3-15) and Zimbabwean spinner Roy Kaia (2-14) took the plaudits in what was an excellent team bowling effort.

In reply, Kaia took his fine form with the ball into his batting, smashing an unbeaten 76 from just 74 balls to fire Bognor to victory.

He was supported by Maskell (22) and Mikey Harris (25*) as they reached the total in less than 23 of the 45 overs.

Chichester Priory Park will look to bounce back from that derby defeat as they welcome Haywards Heath to Goodwood (12.30pm).

In Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to end their season on a winning note after a disappointing August put pay to their promotion hopes.

Heading into the final month of the season, the Nyetimber Lane side were in contention to land the league crown.

But a run of four games without a win sees them in fourth with a home match against third-place Worthing (12.30pm) to come tomorrow.

Stuart Hanks' side lost by 58 runs to relegation-threatened Findon last time out after failing to chase down a target of 228.

ROCKS boss Jack Pearce is hoping the shock of a derby day mauling at local rivals Worthing will spark a reaction from his young side.

Rather than basking in the Bank Holiday sunshine, Bognor well and truly melted, putting in a below-par showing which resulted in a 3-0 loss to their near neighbours Defeat in the first El Classicoast of the season was hard to take for the large travelling cohort of Rocks fans.

But Pearce believes the supporters will see a reaction when the side returns to action at the Nye Camp tomorrow at home to Carshalton Athletic (3pm).

Speaking after the defeat, Pearce said: "It's been a bad day in the office but it's not the end of the season. It's three points, that's all it is. It's a local derby and I understand that means more but it's life. I'm more unhappy with certain senior players today and that is not acceptable to me, Robbie or the club.

"Most probably I hope we get the reaction out of our players that Worthing got last week [after losing 6-0 to Hornchurch]."

Rocks were on reflection probably the better side in the first half at Woodside Road.

But they were unable to take their chances and went in at the

break one down after an error by keeper Charlie Searle.

In the second half, former Rock Ollie Pearce scored twice to extend the lead and send most of the 1,700 in the ground home with a smile on their face.

THe defeat means Bognor are 17th with four points from their first four matches.

Tomorrow's visitors, meanwhile, are fifth, taking nine points from their opening five games. While the south London side are fancied to do well in their Isthmian Premier this season, Pearce believes his side will give them a good game He said: "THere's no one that's outstanding in this league. Teams are all much of a muchness and if you score first it gives you a great lift.

"THat first goal [against Worthing] was devastating, but we got through in the first half on four occasions when I am expecting the ball to be in the back of the net and not one of those occasions did we convert.

"If you have problems in both areas like we did [against Worthing] then we will not win many games."

Rocks have been drawn against Isthmian South East side Sittingbourne in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup next Saturday (Sept 7, 3pm).

'Learn from mistakes - or else' IT'S not often that Rocks boss Jack Pearce singles out individuals for not meeting his high demands.

But after the 3-0 derby day loss to Worthing last week there was no stopping the veteran manager from pointing his finger in the direction of players he felt had let the side and the club down.

Over the years, when he's been nurturing a young side who have had just a few weeks of playing together, Pearce tends to resort to the carrot rather than the stick.

But the manner of the defeat, and two high-profile mistakes which led to goals, led to the manager laying down the challenge to his players: learn from your mistakes - or else.

Speaking to Rocks Radio after the defeat, Pearce said: "I think whenever you lose 3-0 the easiest thing to say is that you're not up for the fight, but I don't think that's the case.

"Goals change the psychology and everything else in a game. As I keep trying to say to people what we're trying to do here is not easy.

"We have got five players - that's 50 per cent of the team - who were playing at levels below this last season. THey will come in and mistakes. But seven players didn't play anywhere near the level we expect. When it's like that we're not going to win many games of football."

In an explosive interview, Pearce then went on to single out individuals.

He said: "I must be honest the way Keaton Wood played in the first half I thought we found him at a bus stop on the way in. But he was not the worst player we had."

He then pointed to the error from goalkeeper Charlie Searle in spilling the ball for the opener and Tommy Leigh for losing the ball on the edge of his box as he tried to

beat two players, which led to the Rebels' second.

Pearce said: "THe only good thing to come out of this game is if Tommy Leigh understands risk and reward."

He added that Leigh's decision was "disgraceful" - adding "he is young and he will learn".

WELL, where do I start with what happened on Monday?

It was very difficult match to watch, never mind commentate on as there was very little to shout about for our fans making the journey to Woodside Road.

It was the complete opposite to the Wingate game where we dominated the match.

I think the first half could have gone either way as we did have a few chances.

In the second half I thought we would push on but it was a very disappointing and lacklustre performance that I have not seen in a long time.

I live in Littlehampton so made my way up to the game early and arrived at about 1pm. After enjoying the pregame entertainment and watching the players warm up, at about 2.30pm I made the way up into the stand ready for commentary on Rocks Radio.

I hoped that we could get a point from the match as it doesn't matter where you are, whenever you play away that is a good result.

Some of the fans were singling out individuals but the whole team just didn't seem to gel and even some of our most experienced players just didn't perform.

Maybe we should have brought on subs earlier than we did as at times you just have to step it up but as soon as the second went in the game was gone.

THe heat had an impact too and I know the players had training on Saturday at Nyewood Lane so whether the team were tired I just don't know.

I didn't think Worthing were really outstanding, it was just typical that the one player who made the difference, Ollie Pearce - who got two goals was a former Rock.

Up until their first goal we more than held our own but we

just didn't take our chances. If we did we would be up at the top of the table!

I really wasn't surprised at Robbie and Jack's reaction after the match.

While I'm not always keen on singling out players as you don't know how they will react, I know that Jack has done it before and it has worked.

I think the players have to take the blame as a whole.

Nothing went right at all and while Jimmy Muitt stood out he looked as though he was trying to do too much.

I just don't know where that leaves us this season as one week we're brilliant and the next we're just not at it.

We have to wait a few months now to wait and get our revenge on them for the reverse match.

I think a bit more time with the same team and let's see where we are. But I do think we will finish stronger and higher up than last season.

Next up is Carshalton who are a decent outfit who had a stonking end to the season.

THey are very well organised and can score goals so we need to be on our game for that.

Everyone saying that if we play like we did against Worthing will be under pressure.

THere's no way will we underestimate them so it will be interesting how we get on.

Hopefully, the home advantage and the support of the Nye Camp crowd will help us get some points.
