Friends fund hospital upgrade HOSPITAL patients in Bognor Regis are to receive a brighter welcome.

Work is about to start on the biggest upgrade of the entrance to the town’s war memorial hospital for nearly 30 years.

THe hospital’s Friends charity has given the go-ahead for sweeping improvements to the landscaped areas seen by tens of thousands of patients, visitors and staff each year.

THe £35,000 scheme has been funded

by the generosity of town residents with their continued backing of the Friends.

Friends’ chairman Brian Knight, pictured above with the plans, said: “I’m a firm believer that first impressions count. If they are good, and you have a good impression from the reception as you step into the hospital building, then you will feel positive for the rest of your time here.

“We will not be touching the car park

but we will be completely changing six landscaped areas around it. We started with four but we have added another two to make a really good job of it.”

THe current landscaping was funded by the Friends when the present main building at the hospital site off Shripney Road was opened in 1990.

But Mr Knight said the site had become tired with age and the Friends decided to make it their next big project before their

latest summer fair.

THe work was awarded to Oliver Dearing and should take three weeks to finish, weather permitting.

A central feature will be a black metal obelisk with the crest of the Friends on top. THis will be located in the landscaped area to the left of the entrance as visitors approach. Oak sleepers will be placed in the rest of the areas pointing towards Turn to page three

Regeneration plan parking worries PARKING spaces included in a planned Bognor Regis regeneration scheme will be less than half the number required, it has been claimed.

Arun District Council's current outline proposals show 199 parking spaces around the new look Hothamton linear park.

But town resident Henry Stamp claims around 450 will be needed once the flats and the shops also proposed for the site are taken into account.

Arun's councillors are due to back the initial plans for the location between Queensway and West Street at a full council meeting next Wednesday.

But Mr Stamp said: "Arun are not talking about the 80-100 flats and the ground floor retail space in two new buildings which will be up to eight storeys tall. THey are also not telling us the amount of car parking which these flats and retail will need, according to Arun's own standards."

THe current Hothamton car park has 215 spaces. Arun intends to have about 200 around its new park.

THat failed to take account of the 104 more spaces Mr Stamp said the retail space would require and the 145-170 spaces required by the flat occupiers.

"THat totals about 450-475 spaces needed for Hothamton - not just 200," he said. "Not providing enough parking will damage the existing town centre shops, reduce the money Arun expect to get from a developer selling new flats and reduce the income Arun would receive from new retail floorspace, which they say they'll spend on future park maintenance."

He estimated the shop space to be some 1,870sq m and Arun's parking standards say one space is needed for each 18sq m.

If all the new flats were two bedrooms, the council's parking standards require 170 parking spaces to serve them. THat would be reduced to 145 spaces if the flats were evenly divided between one and twobedroom homes.

"THere's some space behind the proposed new buildings for a few tens of spaces but nowhere near enough to accommodate the parking demand from the new development.

"Arun's standards say student housing needs some parking, as does elderly persons' accommodation."

As reported, Bognor Regis Civic Society's deputy chairman Hugh Coster, has also criticised the intended parking arrangements.

THe decisions to be made by Arun's members next week will ratify the nine agreed by its Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee last month.

THese included building the park on the site of the current car park and sunken garden and secures a developer to build the flats and shops. THe land could include the health centre if the NHS agrees to move and sell the site.

Karl Roberts, Arun's director of place, is to be given authority to submit a planning application for the park and parking and to spend up to £300,000 to create a planning application for the scheme. Funds will also be spent on a project officer for three years to lead the regeneration work.

SPECIALIST teams were brought in by Arun District Council over the holiday period to clear up oil from the beaches.

It is believed the locations affected included Felpham and Middleton.

THe council posted a warning notice at a series of locations along the seafront from Aldwick eastwards from Christmas Eve. THese included the Aldwick Boat Pound and the seafront railings close to the pier and the bandstand.

It later stated: "Following (the) release of the...warning signs, oil has now been discovered in some

areas."

THe notices said: "Please be aware that the Maritime Coastguard agency has reported that there may be oil coming ashore over the next few days.

"THis is fuel oil and may be present as tar balls and an oily sheen. Only very small quantities are expected.

"THis poses a health risk and, if you see any, please keep children and dogs away."

THe warning asked anyone who found any deposits to raise the alarm by phoning the council with some details.

Station saviour gives praise for restoration

f Greg Burt outside the restored railway station MULTI-MILLION pound restoration works to Bognor Regis railway station have been praised by the man who saved the building.

Contractors were due to hand back the station to train operator Southern Railway today after months on the site.

THeir work has resulted in a £2m project which has combined the station's history with modern facilities.

Town resident Greg Burt said he was delighted with the outcome. He applied in 1989 for the Edwardian station to become a Grade II-listed building after a previous rail operator wanted to demolish it.

Mr Burt, 51, said: "It's always been known in the town that the station was its Sleeping Beauty. "Everybody could see what had happened to similar stations in towns and cities around the country and what was possible here.

"I always believed the station could play

a key part in the town's regeneration - the space inside and its ambience is the key to that. It has taken 30 years to get there but it has been worth the wait."

THe current scheme has seen the 1902 building completely refurbished to make the most of its heritage features.

THe barrier between the concourse and the trains has been replaced by one which matches the original's design.

THe Station Bookshop has been moved into the former ticket office in the main station building. Ornate windows, intricate ceiling mouldings and original parquet floors have been kept and restored.

Blocked windows have been re-opened to allow more light on to a concourse resurfaced with lighter-coloured materials.

Better lighting, a cashpoint machine and enhanced CCTV have also been installed.

Mr Burt said his campaign for the listing

was helped by the fact Littlehampton station had been knocked down in the late 1980s and replaced by a Network South East metal and glass structure.

"THat station was nothing like ours but myself and other people didn't want that sort of replacement for our station," said Mr Burt. "Fortunately, it was listed and that has eventually led to the station we've now got. It was worth the effort all those years ago. THis station will still be here for hundreds of years."

Paul Best, Southern's project manager, said: "We're delighted to welcome these major improvements, which have both modernised the station and restored historic features, all making for a better experience for our passengers."

He thanked the organisations which had worked in partnership with Southern to fund, plan and manage the scheme.

“None of the grasses will grow any taller than 18ins,” said Mr Knight.

“So, all the site will be visible and the sleepers will draw visitors’ attention to the obelisk.”

THe Friends will also control the maintenance contract to ensure the area continues to look attraction for years to come.

THe scheme is the latest of the big projects for which the Friends have become renowned.

“We have committed over £180,000 in the past year to helping the hospital.

THat includes paying £60,000 for a scanner for the musculo-skeletal unit as well as buying 24 new chairs for the two wards,” Mr Knight said.

THe spending was partly funded by the £90,000 which the Friends made last year. THe tea bar in the hospital

makes £500 a month on top of the proceeds from the annual fete, biannual raffles and donations from individuals and clubs and legacies.

THe continued support from the friends was praised by Peter Horn, who chairs the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, which runs much of the hospital.

“THe Friends are fantastic. I wish I could think of a better superlative to describe the fabulous support they give to the hospital.

“THey are always asking about how they can help us.

"THey know how much we value their efforts and how much they make a difference to the patients in the hospital," he added.

“What the Friends do brings the hospital and the community together.

"I recently met two Friends who had both worked at the hospital and it is a way of continuing their involvement."

A259 to be closed IMPROVEMENTS to create a pedestrian and cycleway along the A259 will see the road closed near Middleton.

THe contractors will shut the Worms Lane section of the road for two nights in the middle of this month. THe closures will take effect from 8pm-5am on January 15 and 16.

` Regeneration OBE HELPING to regenerate Bognor Regis has earned the former vicechancellor of the University of Chichester an OBE. Professor Clive Behagg, of East Preston, was awarded the honour in the new year's list.

His citation said it was awarded for his services to higher education and economic regeneration.

Prof Behagg played a leading role in investing in the activities on the Bognor Regis campus of the university which has resulted in its £35m engineering and digital technology park being built.

THis will provide new educational chances for a broad range of students.

Another OBE was awarded to Chichester resident Anthony Delahunty, a non-executive board member of the Marine Management Organisation, for his services to the fishing industry.

` Model railways MODEL railway fans should head to Bognor Regis Model Railway Club's annual exhibition.

THe club's members have been busily arranging the latest of their big events to take place on January 13 and 14 at Felpham Community College. THe opening times will be 10am-5pm on the first day and 10am-4.30pm on the second.

As well as 15 layouts in various scales, the event will have a host of trader stands, a ride on railway and refreshments.

NEW Year dippers in Bognor Regis spanned two centuries. THe participants in the revived fun event to welcome in 2017 ranged from 15 to nearly 80 years old.

EXCITED children at a Rose Green school saw their messages in a special birthday album for the first time. THe 15 pupils were presented with certificates for contributing to a unique celebration for the Queen’s 90th birthday.

JUST over £41,000 was handed out in grants to Bognor Regis groups by the town’s mayor. Cllr Pat Dillon presented the funds for the highlight of his civic reception to mark his year in office.

THIS month marked the first anniversary of the Bognor Regis and Chichester Post.

SEVERAL hundred people of all ages went along to enjoy the smiles in the Sunshine at the five-day Clowns’ International celebration. PRAYERS for Pagham were offered by the area’s vicar as more than a thousand homes in the area moved closer. THe Rev Mark Eminson joined the 1,600 plus campaigners who had written to Arun District Council to urge the rejection of the proposals.

August ANIMAL magic brought the country to the coast in Bognor Regis’ biggest event of its kind. A menagerie of animals provided one of the main highlights of this year’s record-breaking Hotham Park Country Fair and proved popular among visitors of all ages to the annual summer attraction.

DONALD Trump and Kim Jongun put aside their differences at the International Bognor Birdman. THe controversial leaders of the USA and North Korea staged a joint entry complete with missiles which promptly sank without a trace off the town’s pier. THe winning twosome in the competitions Kingfisher class were suitably dressed with wigs, fake tan and headgear.

September GREAT Bognor Bake off made its debut on bank holiday Monday and was a huge success. With over 20 entrants and big interest on the day, organiser Sarah Boote-Cook has already confirmed it will return for a second year with even more categories.

NIGHTMARES and terrors came true for all at the Hotham Park Rox Halloween event. Families flocked to the park in the afternoon for the terrifying free event. THe Bognor in Bloom Pumpkin Competition was a great success, with many entrants and three category prize winners.

EXCITED residents of all ages were delighted as the town lit up when the Christmas lights were switched on.

THe cast from the Spillers pantomime Aladdin helped with the switch on and entertained crowds with songs including a rendition of "A Whole New World".

November SEVEN decades vanished in the moment it took Jeanette Dace to plant a poppy cross at the Bognor Regis war memorial.

Tears filled the eyes of former soldier James McGrory at Aldwick’s service of remembrance.

Bagging a new play area CHILDREN at a Bognor Regis school jumped for joy over news of winning a community bid.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School were delighted to announce they bagged a whopping £2,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme.

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year.

Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £40 million to over 9,700 local community projects.

Headteacher Peter Edgington said: “I am thrilled and delighted at the community support St Mary’s has received and would like to thank everyone who used their blue tokens to vote for the school during

September and October.

"I am very grateful to Tesco’s for providing this scheme and look forward to unveiling our exciting project in the new year.”

Millions of shoppers voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, which came second, has been awarded £2,000.

Work will now begin on improving the outdoor play space for all St Mary’s children.

Alec Brown, Tesco’s head of community, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”

Village homes are approved STRONG objections have failed to stop new homes in Yapton being approved.

Arun District Council has backed outline proposals for the 56 dwellings on a field in the village centre.

THe scheme, by Seaward Properties, was heavily criticised by Yapton Parish Council when it was submitted.

THe parish councillors said: "THe site provides an essential setting for the Main Road Conservation Area, its listed buildings and the village settlement as a whole. THe introduction of built form beyond the existing conservation area would represent an inappropriate incursion into the countryside.

"Yapton's rural character would be eroded. It would remove the village's sense of place. THe sensitive location for the proposed housing development is unsuitable and unsustainable."

More than 200 additional homes had been approved within 350m of each other in the village, the council said.

THere was the potential for another 200 as well, to make it important the cumulative impact of the development was taken into account.

A further 36 representations were received by Arun with concerns about the proposed development on Bonhams Field in Main Road.

As well as the parish council's points, these included the fact the scheme neither protected or enhanced the special character of the conservation area and the impact of the housing on the area's biodiversity.

Arun planning officer David Innes says in a report the scheme by Seaward

Properties was counter to the council's planning policies. But these were outdated, to mean little weight could be accorded to them.

"Significant weight must be given to the provision of housing and affordable housing in the district where the application can overcome adverse impacts, including the level of harm that would result from developing a site adjoining a conservation area and in proximity to listed buildings."

THe lack of a five-year housing land supply and the council's need to be able to meet the objectively assessed housing need (house-building target) was another important factor, Mr Innes said.

"THere is potential for the development to have an impact upon the setting of heritage assets and to result in the loss of a parcel of grade one agricultural land.

"However, it is considered to be sustainable in terms of its proximity to local services and amenities, which can all be accessed without the need for private vehicle use," he added.

THe design, layout and appearance of the site would be determined when the reserved matters of the application were considered. THat would provide the chance to enable work to mitigate any potential harm shown to be caused to the setting of heritage assets.

Arun's historic buildings advisor had twice objected to the proposals.

On the site of 5.2 hectares, Seaward Properties intends to build four onebed flats, eight four-bed houses, 24 twobed houses and 20 three-bed houses.

Affordable homes will total 16.

Traffic-calming measures in Felpham to start this month A SCHEME aimed at cutting the speed of motorists in Felpham is to start this month.

THe £80,000 project will see pairs of mini-speed bumps, known as speed cushions, installed in Downview Road, Outerwyke Road and Wroxham Way. Installation will start on January 15 after concerns were raised about vehicle speeds in the area.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "Unfortunately, there will be disruption to local traffic as drivers will need to give way to each other passing the works, and temporary

traffic signals may be used at times.

"Parking will be temporarily suspended at specific locations and there will be some noise. However, we will do all we can to keep this to a minimum and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience."

THe Downview Road area was put forward by Felpham's county council member and Felpham Parish Council for the work. It is being funded entirely by developers of housing in the area.

It is expected the work will end by February 23, subject to the weather.

Proposals for work in other parts of Felpham have also been progressed.

He contacted him during the new year bank holiday and Mr Spencer walked the beach on Tuesday morning.

"He saw the situation not just in East Front Road but also in the central area and West Front Road, especially where the revetment is.

"Roger got back to me today and said he would be going down to the beach with his contractor tomorrow.

"It will be excellent to have something done to get us through this storm. THen, we need to press on and get a longer lasting scheme for the future and I am sure we can."

Festive wear helps children

` Helpers needed for sight loss group A LEADING sight loss charity is calling for volunteers to help to run a Bognor Regis group for people with eyesight problems.

THe town's Macular Support Group is to meet monthly from next month after being held less frequently since its start in 2016.

THe group will hold its sessions from 10.30am-12.30pm on the second THursday of each month, from January 11, at 36 Victoria Drive in Bognor Regis.

It is one of more than 350 groups of its kind in the UK which offer vital information, encouragement and friendship to people who are affected by macular disease, which affects their central vision.

It is hoped volunteers will help organise and run the group's meetings with help from the charity's services and volunteering team. THe group is also looking for people to help with tasks such as booking regular guest speakers.

Stella Black, the Macular Society's regional manager, said: "THe Bognor Regis Macular Support Group provides a real lifeline for people living locally with sight loss.

"THe peer support offered by the group is absolutely vital. It's incredibly reassuring for people to know that there are others who truly understand their condition.

"With more than 200 people in the UK being diagnosed with macular disease every day, the existence of our support groups has never been more important."

Staff spend two days with charity VOLUNTEERS from a leading company spent two days sprucing up the base of a leading charity near Fontwell.

Workers at THe Body Shop spent the time with THe Aldingbourne Trust carrying out a variety of tasks.

THey were divided into two teams, each of which spent their corporate volunteer day at the trust's Aldingbourne Country Centre.

Staff were rallied by Caroline Dance and they arrived with their wellies in hand.

Caroline said: "Myself and my colleagues at THe Body Shop International really enjoyed our recent corporate volunteering event at THe Aldingbourne Trust.

"It was great to work as a team away from the offce. We had so much fun and felt really energised at the end of

THeir supervisor was Paul Dunne, who is one of the original trust members, and he ensured they were kept busy.

THe trust supports adults with learning disabilities. A spokesman said: "We are very fortunate that so many local firms want to support us on their corporate volunteer days.

"THey certainly make a difference to the people we support."

"THroughout the year, they continually raise and donate funds to charity and today has been a great example of that.

"THis is part of the fundraising efforts made by staff across the whole council and, in addition to the Arun Direct contribution, a total of £3,612 has been raised by staff this year - with £22,636 being raised since the start of 2012."

As well as the cash help, staff donated more than 100 gifts to Home Start Arun, Wadars (Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service) and the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis in the hope of a better Christmas for those in need.

Dippers brave the rough sea when conditions rule out new year event TWO METRE high waves washed away the hopes of new year dippers in Bognor Regis.

THe giant swell saw the town’s relaunched January 1 dip postponed for safety reasons.

THe five hardy individuals who still turned up ventured in for a paddle in the stormy conditions but were unable to go any further.

But the determined organisers at Bognor Regis Swimming Club have rearranged the event for 11am on January 13. THe location will remain the Bognor Regis Yacht Club in Victoria Road South.

Sarah Boote Cook, who chairs the swimming club, was one of those who went down to the water’s edge on Monday dressed as Tiger Lily from Peter Pan, in keeping with the dip’s panto theme.

“We are devastated the dip has had to be postponed. We really wanted it to take place,” she said. “But safety has to come first. We had about 20 people registered to take part but only a few of them have come along because of the conditions.

“We decided to still go down to the beach because so many people had come along to watch us and we wanted to do something for them.

“THe conditions were very, very rough when we were at the water’s edge.

THey are so rough that our safety rigid inflatable boat couldn’t get here from Littlehampton.”

Conditions for the 2018 dip were light rain, a south-westerly wind of 17-28 mph

and an air temperature of 8 deg C. But the event’s safety officer said the combination of the tide and wind caused the problem.

Simon Macrae, a dive leader for Worthing Diving Club, said: “It’s just not safe for wading into. You have got the wind against the tide.

“THe tide is slowly going out and the wind is coming on to the beach.

THerefore, you have got waves up to 2m high and, when they roll, there is an undertow and everyone who goes out there will be caught in that and go out a little way.

“It’s fun and nice until someone gets hurt and that’s why the event had to be called off.

“It just isn’t safe. You can get some waves which are OK but then there will be one which catches people out.

“THe cox of the safety boat said he wasn’t prepared to come from Littlehampton because of the conditions – and that says it all.”

THe dip has been an established start to a new year in Bognor Regis for decades.

It was previously held by the town’s Lions Club at the same location but dwindling numbers and safety fears led to its cancellation a few years ago.

THe swimming club has decided to take on the organisation as part of its work in the community and to raise funds for its activities and other good causes.

“We want to bring the dip back to Bognor Regis and to grow it,” said Sarah.

“THere is no reason why we can’t have

hundreds of people taking part like they do in other places such as Cromer.

“People like to do this sort of event and it fits in very well with the swimming club and forms part of our community work like the carnival and International Bognor Birdman.”

Up to 100 people gathered on the foreshore to watch those dippers brave enough to venture on to the shingle.

One of them, Bognor Regis resident Kelvin Hickmore, 48, went along as an Ugly Sister.

“I’ve taken part in the dip ten times in all and I did it last year. It’s a real shame it’s been postponed because of health and safety. I remember one year when the conditions were rough we were tied to a rope and went in one by one. It was like a washing machine in the waves before we were pulled out.

“THe organisers could always look at doing something like that. I don’t see how there are ever going to be calm conditions at this time of year,” he said.

He will use his dip to raise money for the swimming club as part of his ongoing efforts to help it.

Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall also entered into the spirit of the occasion in his suit and chain of office.

He said: “I’ve never done this before. I’ll be back on January 13 in my wetsuit and I’m definitely looking forward to it.

“I’ve used this as my dummy run and I’m psyched up now."

Amanda's joy at TV series MONTHS of keeping a secret have finally ended for a Yapton resident.

Amanda Worne was finally able to share the results of the transformation of her house after it was broadcast on BBC1 last night. THe DIY: SOS The Big Build episode showed the work of the hundreds of people who volunteered to help to make Amanda’s home more suitable for her life in a wheelchair.

THe Prince of Wales pub in Aldingbourne staged a special screening of the programme and everyone who helped was invited along.

Mum-of-four Amanda, 46, was delighted with the result – and finally being able to talk about it.

She said: “I was so excited to share what it looks like. It’s been so hard keeping the secret. I watched it with my family but it stills feels very surreal.

“THe house looks really different but, from the moment I saw it, it felt like home. It’s been so beautiful recently with all the Christmas decorations. It’s like a little Santa’s grotto. THe children love it. We’ve been able to have a proper Christmas together. I even made a proper Christmas cake in my new kitchen.

“THe programme was the first one of the series. I hope it lifts people’s spirits to see that there is always a positive.

“For my family, it really is the beginning of a new year and we are now looking forward to the future.”

Amanda has been in a wheelchair after a serious cycling accident in August, 2015, caused severe injuries.

It was last May the DIY SOS team descended on the home she shares with her husband, Vic, and their children Megan, Jacob, Amelia and Joseph.

THe volunteer builders and various tradesmen installed a lift to help her go upstairs, low kitchen counters to enable her to cook while she is in her wheelchair, a remote-controlled front door with a ramp leading to it and a host of other accessible adaptations.

“We did worry that people would share the secrets but now, finally, everyone who helped has got to see the fruits of their labour,” said Amanda.

“About 300 amazing people gave up their time to help with the build. I cannot thank them enough, as well as the generous local companies who donated materials and equipment.”

THose that helped include Earth Cycle, of Chichester, with compost and bark for Amanda's gardens. THe firm's team also spent several days helping with a range of other projects.

But the screening was tinged with sadness for Amanda. She was nominated for the programme by one of her friends, Bognor Regis resident Jo Hinckley.

Jo sadly passed away last October, aged 40. “Jo was such a special person,” Amanda added. “She was there for me when I had my accident. She phoned me every day when I was in hospital.

“She never moved on and left me. She was such a good friend. Jo has left me the most beautiful house in the world. THe house now reminds me of her.”

New status gets music group buzzing A NEW status is music to the ears of two Bognor Regis mums who launched a community group.

Inna Erskine and Mel Twinley are completing the first year of Harmony Hive on a high. THey have been granted community interest company (CIC) status - the business equivalent of a charity - to enable them to seek external funding and start to expand their pre-school music and art classes to schools around the town.

THe friends have five children between them and Mel, 40, said becoming a CIC would mean 2018 was a year of opportunity for them.

"Working together, we've found that we can provide an exciting opportunity for children to experience creative play and music in a way that is not often geared towards this age group," she said.

"It is important to us that the group is kept affordable for families but that doesn't compromise the educational potential of each session."

Inna said: "Having official CIC status will mean that we can apply for external funding to purchase more specialist sensory equipment and fund projects that directly benefit our community.

"We will also be able to fund outreach projects, such as taking our classes to schools, where arts and music programmes are being cut from the curriculum."

"To date, Mel and I have completely selffunded the group. We often don't make the minimum wage on the hours we put in and so renewing equipment or investing in anything over and above what we are able to produce ourselves is not really an option."

Any external funding will also go towards additional classes to support new parents and carers in the first six months as well as reaching other sectors of the community, such as those who home educate.

Mel and Inna, 37, came up with the idea for Harmony Hive on a seafront walk in October, 2016. THey believed Inna's professional music background and Mel's experience in art and design blended together perfectly.

Months of planning and dreaming saw them launch last January 8. THeir group has grown to more than 120 families on their books for their regular term-time sessions from 9.45am-11.15am on Tuesdays and THursdays at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road.

"Feedback has always been so positive.

We've developed a wonderful core of regulars and, almost every week, we have had new carers bring their little ones along," Mel said.

THey are celebrating the project's first birthday with a family fun session at 2pm this Sunday at the Regis School of Music.

THe Emirates Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth is offering half-price tickets for all of January to everyone who has a PO postcode.

Standard ticket prices will be cut to £5.25 for adults, £4.25 children and £4.75 students and seniors.

Tony Sammut, the tower's general manager, said: "We offer a year-round 25 per cent discount to residents of Portsmouth and Gosport but this offer is much bigger and farther-reaching than ever before, taking in Fareham, Chichester, Bognor Regis and all of the Isle of Wight."

OUTLINE plans for 30 homes in Fontwell have been refused planning permission.

THe scheme by Hatch Homes was rejected by Arun District Council planning officer Richard Temple for five reasons. THese included a lack of evidence residents of the housing in Eastergate Lane would be unaffected by air pollution and noise from the A29.

"No information has been submitted regarding noise pollution or an air quality survey," he says in his report.

He also ruled the housing would be an over-intensive use of the site of 1.16 hectares. Eastergate and Walberton parish councils objected, as well as 20 households.

Sport success YOUNG female volleyball players are starting to show promise to represent the Bognor Regis area with success.

THeir coach says the enthusiasm shown by founder members of the junior team of Arun Volleyball Club was encouraging others to become involved.

Olena Kagarova said: "My best hope is that it can be a strong team, the first-ever junior volleyball team in the area.

"THe one who will carry the name of our town regionally and, I hope, nationally."

THe optimism around the younger players was repeated in the two senior teams, said Olena.

"After the national team of Arun Volleyball Club retired, the club started the season with two new and fresh teams. THe ladies' team is called the Arun Vixens and the men's team is the Arun Foxes," Olena said.

"Both teams are playing in Division Two of the Sussex League.

THe head coach of the club is Yuri Kagarov, the ladies' coach is Piotr Oleksiuk and the men are coached by both Piotr and Yuri."

THe Vixens were third in the league heading into 2019 and the Foxes were second, with three wins in their four most recent games.

Visit by campaigners PENSIONS campaigners from Bognor Regis and Chichester have warned the Government they are here to stay.

THe founder of the area's branch of the Women Against Pension Inequality group, Jill Robertson, said it planned to hold more meetings in the coming year.

"Waspi are not going away. Our meetings are held every four to six weeks across the region. "...this matter is above politics and needs to be resolved before pensioner poverty increases as a result," she said.

"We do not call for a reversion in pension age, because we realise that equalisation is needed. THe maladministration, however, is what we

THe bar is now in phase one with the initial bar area currently opened and phase two is in a working progress which will hopefully see a live lounge, stage, VIP booths, DJ booth and more seating for dining. Dan is also planning to start a bar tapas and small plates menu in a month or so.

Dan said: "THe bar opened to much excitement and it's been busy ever since. People love it here, they are really impressed with how it's changed and it's well accepted. It's an upper class bar for working class people."

Tao is offering discounts to all military, emergency service staff, OAP's and students and will be bringing in loyalty cards in the near future.

Dan's ethos it to make sure the bar offers something for everyone. THey will have barista style coffees served from 11am, showing all the sports on 84 inch TV and a Lego lounge and cinema for children. During the day the bar will offer a relaxed and chilled atmosphere and at night cater for music and dancing.

Dan said: "Tao's will be a place where anybody - from an 18 year old to an 80 year old - will feel comfortable. I'm looking at introducing themed nights, comedy nights, live music, tributes and single nights. We have a 250 capacity and will be continually expanding what we do to offer more. I have to say a huge thanks to my parents and my girlfriend for all their help and support in making this possible."

Mrs Robertson was among those who walked out when a government minister spoke about the matter in a Commons debate just before Christmas.

She was in the public gallery for a debate about the financial pressures women born in the 1950s are under because of the rapid increase in their state pension age from 60 to 66.

North Bersted resident Jill said: "I and others in the public gallery heard over 30 MPs support the campaign. THe

Government continue to ignore and push aside the responsibility of righting this wrong.

"When pensions minister Guy Opperman did not deliver, we turned our backs on him and walked out of the public gallery. It felt historic."

She was joined by other members from the Waspi group, pictured above. THey met with some 100 other members from around the country - either in the public gallery or demonstrating outside.

THe all parliamentary group for women's pensions had called another debate for next April 27 to further challenge the Government about the issue, she added.

Skating on to bigger things MANAGERS of the Bognor Regis Ice Rink have said they will be back, bigger and better, next year.

Kara Cole who ran the ice rink with her husband, James, said: "We would love to come back again next year and expand if we get the permission. I know the area outside the rink for people to get their skates can get crowded so we would look at making that larger.

"I would definitely come back to Bognor Regis though, the community here have been simply amazing."

THe temporary attraction in the Place St Maur has been running since November 23 and seen several thousand visitors enjoy the ice since its opening.

Kara continued: "It's actually been really overwhelming. THe people of Bognor and the surrounding areas have been so lovely and

we've received so many positive comments on our Facebook page and in person.

"We really didn't know what to expect when we first set it up and certainly did not think we would be so busy. THe local people have just been so supportive and complimentary.

"People have been praising our marshals who have been assisting them on the ice and even teaching some people to skate.

"I'd really like to say a massive thank-you to everyone who has supported us."

THe ice rink will close on Sunday, January 7, after six weeks of running.

Skater and mum of two, Sharon Driver, from Bognor Regis, said: "We have been down here about three times now. It's been so much fun to have something like this so local.

"THe Christmas holidays can be a really tough time to entertain the children, because you are already spending out a fortune on presents, food and everything else so it's great to have something like this to entertain the children and it's great value for money."

` Manager convicted A BOGNOR REGIS man who laundered thousands of pounds to fund his gambling addiction has been convicted.

Ronnie Lewry was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court just before Christmas to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years after he admitted fraud and conversion of criminal property.

He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the next year.

His crime came to light at the end of last June after Eclipse Financial Management Ltd, an insurance broker in Tangmere, overpaid Pen Underwriting £10,937.35.

THe client contacted Eclipse to arrange the return of the funds.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "However, the funds were instead transferred into the account of Ronnie Lewry, who was a training and compliance manager with Eclipse at the time.

"It emerged the 28-year-old, of Brooks Lane West, had falsified documents to ensure he was the beneficiary of the overpayment. THe following day he failed to turn up for work. Evidence shows he converted this criminal property through online gambling websites, ATM cash withdrawals and other personal spending."

Lewry was arrested last October and charged. Police intend to pursue a confiscation order to recover the funds.

` Pram race success DELIGHTED organisers of the latest Pagham Pram Race have thanked its supporters for their donations. THe bucket collection at the Boxing Day fun saw some £1,770 in coins handed over. THis took the total takings from the day to £3,500. THis will be added to the funds from other events to be handed to local good causes.

Third-place Chi begin the new year on familiar turf at Havant

Lions going in right direction PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea insists he is not getting carried away despite his side sitting second in the SCFL Premier Division.

THe free-scoring Lions have been unstoppable in recent weeks, netting 20 goals in their past four matches and conceding just two.

THat fine form has propelled the Nyetimber Lane side up the table and in contention for a title challenge.

With the club also in the semi finals of the RUR Cup and the last eight of the Sussex Senior Cup, things are looking rosy for the Lions.

Next up is a trip to eighthplaced Peacehaven & Telscombe tomorrow (3pm), a side that are just five points behind them.

For Shea - who admits he took a chance in appointing former assistant Richie Shea and 24-year-old Tom Simmonds to the post of jointmanager - the progress is very pleasing.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "THings are going really well.

"All the players have just started to realise how Richie and Tom wanted to play. It's taken a little while to get there but now we are seeing it all in

action. As well as the results on the pitch, there has been lots of hard work off it.

"We have worked really hard to get games on and have got a good backroom team.

"THe whole club is going in the right direction."

Shea was buoyed by a fruitful festive period, which included a 5-1 victory over Loxwood last time out with Lloyd Rowlatt, Terrell Lewis, Joe Booker and Dan Simmonds (2) getting the goals. THat came after a 5-0 demolition of Chichester City on Boxing Day. Shea said the victory, which lifted his club above their local rivals, was 'massive', adding: "I felt the nerves on Christmas Day night. You never want to lose to your local rivals especially when it's a big game over Christmas.

"We all know each other very well. Scott Murfin left us to go there earlier this season and they also have players like Josh Clack and Reuben French who have played for us.

"It was a game which we didn’t want to lose and to be fair we took our opportunities very well and deserved the win."

CHICHESTER RFC will have a familiar foe to defeat if they are to start 2018 off with a bang.

Scott Ashley's side make the short trip to Havant tomorrow (2pm) seeking a victory that will keep them in touch at the top of London Division One South.

Chi went into the winter break in third place, seven points behind league leaders Medway, after a bruising 24-17 victory over Tottonians.

THat was the Blue and Blues' fourth victory in a row - a streak which began with a win away at the side leading the pack at the halfway mark of the campaign.

Tomorrow's task will not be easy, though, with Havant sitting just one place below Chi in the table.

THe return fixture at Oaklands Park earlier in the season ended in a 30-17 victory for the home side. Win the return, which is the Blues' first trip in the league to Hook's Lane since 2013, and they will record a much-needed double. * Bognor RFC travel to Sandown & Shanklin tomorrow (2pm) looking to close the gap on league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

THe Purple and Greens are currently second in Hampshire One.

City out to make Vase history Ne CHICHESTER City manager Miles Rutherford is calling on his side to bounce back as they look to make history in the FA Vase.

THe Lillywhites play Horley Town tomorrow (3pm) in the last 32 of the national knockout competition. Chi head to play the Surrey side, who are seventh in the Combined Counties Premier league, after a poor festive period.

A 5-0 home loss to Pagham on Boxing Day was followed by a 4-1 away victory at Lancing.

THose results leave Chi in fourth in the SCFL Premier, with Rutherford's side losing ground on leaders Haywards Heath. But, despite his

side's recent crushing defeat to their local rivals, the Chi boss believes his side have the character to progress to the Vase last 16.

Rutherford said: "Sometimes you've got to accept players are going to have an off day but it's not often that all eleven let you down.

"THey did against Pagham. THey know that.

I've told them so as well. Hopefully, we'll pick ourselves up.

"We will bounce back no doubt. We've got some very big games on the horizon.

Family affair sees Jamie defeat dad THERE was no love lost between the Middletons as son Jamie defeated dad Steve to take the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out third division singles crown.

THe pair were among 52 players to step up to the oche for the annual contest at the Newtown Social Club.

THe Middletons, who are both members of the Newtown C side, split the first two legs of the final. In the decider, it was the younger of the two who scored better.

With a finish of 16 left and his father breathing down his neck, he hit double 8 with his last dart, to take the win, and the Division 3 Singles champion title.

THe Division Two final saw Division 2 Summer League singles champion Keith

Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) take on Graeme Dutton (BRSA Ravens).

Dutton performed well but the scoring firepower of Robinson was too much him. THe Chi Snooker Club player rounded off the win with an out shot of 94, hitting single 18, treble 12, and double top to take the leg in 21 darts.

Division One saw 26 players whittled down to leave Gary Blackwood (THe Legends) and Ricky Clark (Newtown Amity) to play the final.

After splitting the first two legs, Blackwood forged ahead in the decider with two 140s and 96. But THe Legends' player fell short on his doubles.

After Clark gave him a chance, Blackwood eventually hit the double, taking the leg in 16 darts for the Division One title.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham will want to start the new year with a win as they host Sidlesham at the Recreation Ground (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side, who sit third in the standings, have not won in three matches and last week's trip to Clymping was postponed due to the weather.

Bosham, meanwhile, travel to Worthing Town tomorrow (2pm) looking to win their first match in six.

THe Robins have drawn their past four matches, a streak that has seen them all but lose any hope of retaining their league title.

THeir scheduled match last weekend against Lancing United was postponed.

Injury crisis gets worse for Bognor ahead of six-pointer Next Game

WHITEHAWK (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has been left with a selection headache ahead of the Rocks' relegation six-pointer with Sussex rivals Whitehawk - with nearly half his squad needing treatment.

THe extensive injury list at Nyewood Lane now includes Chad Field and Keaton Wood, who will both miss tomorrow's trip to the Brighton-based bottom side (3pm).

After losing 3-0 to local rivals Havant & Waterlooville on New Year's Day, Bognor remain second bottom in National South, with the gap to safety widened to six points.

But with Whitehawk, who are back under the leadership of Steve King, picking up their first win of the season against Eastbourne Borough last time out, the depleted Rocks are unlikely to match the 6-2 victory in the reverse fixture in August.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "THey are a very different team to the team we played back in August. THe one thing when you're down there in the table is to get their first win, which they now have. And who’s next? It’s us.

"You can drive yourself crackers thinking about all the kicks against us. We know we are capable but the injuries is a double headache."

As well as missing Field and Wood, the Rocks will be without James Crane, Corey Heath and Ollie Pearce. Left side player Kristian Campbell is also a doubt while the newly re-signed Gary Charman is out for the next four weeks.

THrow in the suspension of Ben Swallow, who was harshly dismissed against Havant and Bognor are struggling to field 11 players.

THe forward was sent off mid-way through the first half when he was deemed to have stamped on former Crawley striker Matt Tubbs.

Pearce said: "I don’t think anybody can question the players' efforts when we went to 10. Given the strength of the wind I would have taken being one down at half time if we had a full 11. THe sending off was a major turning point. THat’s the luck you get sometimes in football. THat’s not to say that it won’t change this weekend."

He added: "We strengthened the club no end by signing Keaton Wood and Chad has improved massively in recent months.

"With the games we have coming up, to lose two of the top quality players we have at this level, that’s what really frustrates a manager."

Despite having seven players of his small squad unavailable Pearce said the club would not be appealing the sending off.

He said: "One of biggest diseases in football is people feigning injury and people running around referees to get players sent off.

"A ref is a human being and, despite what they say, they will get influenced by people around them.

"When you get these situations, mistakes will be made and ref did make a mistake."

'Hawks to be strong and direct' LADY luck is never there when you need her.

It's not clear what Bognor did to offend the powerful grand dame over the summer, but that little touch of fortune she brings has deserted the Nyewood faithful so far this term.

Another test comes tomorrow when the Rocks travel to Whitehawk, a side that until a few days ago had not won in National South.

But, under the direction of Steve King, the Brighton-based Hawks are starting to pick up.

Pearce said: "Knowing the players he has signed, I imagine they will be physically strong and direct, which will play to their strengths. I don’t blame them for that.

"After their win, they are obviously on a high and the one club they want to play is us, given our position and state of injuries. I’m on the phone all day trying to get players in and hopefully will bring some in by Saturday."

One thing that is certain is that the Rocks will be cheered on by a sizable following, with scores of fans heading along the coast Pearce said: "Our supporters have been magnificent this year given where we are in the league and how little we've given them to cheer at home. I've no complaints from the efforts of the players, either, but results say we're not doing well."

A NEW year and, hopefully, a new start for Bognor Regis Town Football Club.

2017 was good for the Rocks in many ways, but recent months have seen us struggle to pick up wins.

Let's hope that changes in the next few weeks.

THere was welcome news to kick off 2018 with the announcement Gary Charman has returned from Eastbourne Borough.

With more injuries to the team, his return can only help bolster our defensive options.

Unfortunately, he was missing because of injury at the recent Havant & Waterlooville home game.

But, with Corey Heath out for the season and Keaton Wood taking another knock at Havant, hopefully he can get fit soon. I think it was a good decision to bring him back.

He knows the way we play and is a positive influence in the dressing room.

Welcome back 'Zorro'!

On another note, it was also good to see Ben Johnson back training with the team before the away Havant game and then again back at Nyewood Lane on the bench for the return match on January 1.

I made the short trip across the county boundary to West Leigh Park on Boxing Day with optimism but fully knowing Havant's strength and physicality.

THey are not second in the league for no reason.

For a change I watched the game from behind the goal.

THe weather was dreadful and we got soaked in the first half.

Bognor played on the counter attack and really should have scored when Ibra Sekajja blasted narrowly wide, one on one with the goalkeeper.

Havant were good at getting the ball forward quickly but very rarely did they seem to do much else.

Whereas Bognor worked the ball forward countless times through Calvin Davies and

Kristian Campbell on either side.

In the end, the game finished goalless. But this was a decent point for the Green Army.

THanks to Ken and Graham, I got singing a bit behind the goal and fully enjoyed it.

I think its safe to say we outsung the Hawks all afternoon!

Terrific support as always in this derby from the Rocks faithful. THanks for having me.

Unfortunately, the return match at Nyewood Lane on New Year's Day wasn't the greatest from a Bognor perspective.

In my view, the referee lost control of that game and sent off Ben Swallow for what many argue was not a red card.

THe conditions were difficult out there, but nowhere near as bad as that Havant pitch days before!

In a rather nasty incident it appeared Davies was elbowed by the Havant defender but the referee only gave a yellow card.

Officials tend to lack consistency at this level and, with the conditions as well, it was always going to be difficult for us to get back to winning ways against a side who look set for at least a play-off spot.

Plus, Chad Field looks set to be out for a while with a lower leg injury. He's been our best defender for the Green Army this season in my opinion.

THings can only get better surely? We have some tough, crucial games on the horizon.

Whitehawk tomorrow away will be tough.

THey managed to beat Jamie Howell's Eastbourne Borough AWAY last week 4-1 to secure their first win of the season!

It was an impressive result from our Brighton-based neighbours who need to win many games if they are to escape the drop this season.

Bognor will look to bounce back, though, and I think if we recapture some of the spirit from West Leigh Park on Boxing Day then we'll have no problem. See you tomorrow!
