Advisors braced for benefit ADVISORS at help-points in Bognor Regis and Chichester are braced for more than 1,000 new clients a year seeking help about welfare benefits.

THe volunteers and employees at the Citizen’s Advice centres expect the numbers who want support to soar from this summer.

THey have just six months to prepare for the full impact of universal credit to be felt by recipients of the six benefits it

replaces.

THe effect of the Government-imposed switch saw 300 extra clients turn to the centres, and their sister site in Littlehampton, in the last three months of last year.

Luca Badioli, their new chief executive, said: “THat was a big increase, which we foresaw due to the start of the roll-out of universal credit.

“We are planning for a further increase

when it takes full effect.

“We have looked at the data from other Citizen’s Advice where there is the full service universal credit and we predict we will have an extra 86 clients a month because of it.”

THis was based on the experience of centres elsewhere with a 30-40 per cent increase in clients seeking help about benefits.

THe Government is making the

radical change to simplify the benefits system and enabling payments to be quickly altered to reflect the changed circumstances of the recipients.

But the move has been strongly criticised nationally. THis has led the Government to make changes from next month. One of them has seen the transfer of families in this area on to universal credit put back from April to July.

Club's concert to mark anniversary MUSIC fans in Bognor Regis will be celebrating their club's latest anniversary with a celebrity concert this weekend.

THe Bognor Regis Music Club members will enjoy the 40th anniversary of its first concert with a performance by Bognor Regis-born violinist Bradley Creswick, accompanied by concert pianist Margaret Fingerhut.

THey will be playing a Brahms sonata and scherzo, Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, Sarasate's Romanza Andalucia and Ravel's Habanera and Tzigane.

THeir concert will take place at 7pm on Sunday at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "It is fitting that we have invited Bradley and Margaret back to the club for our special anniversary, where they have performed many times together. Membership peaked at 181 in the year 2001 and, in line with many music clubs, has reduced somewhat since then to its current 80 or so.

"THe club remains in good heart, however, and concentrates more these days on providing opportunities for local musicians to perform to a sympathetic audience in a beautiful setting with excellent acoustics, ideally suited to the performance of small-scale works."

THe first concert of the Regis Music and Concert Club took place on Sunday, January 22, 1978, to an invited audience at 2 Sudley Road, where the club has since remained. In those days, the audience was told dinner jackets were preferred. Tickets were £2 each.

In 1999, the name was changed to the Bognor Regis Music Club. Between 1979 and 2011, the club was chaired by local dentist Derek Debuse, ably supported by his wife, Gill.

He handed over to Chris Coote in 2011 because of ill-health. THe club's 40 years have seen many famous musicans perform at its meetings.

THey have included Tasmin Little, Mark Padmore, Jack Brymer, Emma Johnson and Paul Lewis.

For the anniversary concert, Bradley will be returning to his home town. He was an outstanding member of the West Sussex Youth Orchestra.

He studied at the Royal College of Music and is leader of the Northern Sinfonia. He appeared as a solost with it in the 1989 BBC Proms playing THe Lark Ascending.

He is relishing the chance to play with Margaret at recitals around the country in a partnership which goes back to their Royal College of Music days.

Margaret is regarded as one of the UK's most distinguished and poetic pianists.

She is a professor of piano at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and a visiting tutor at Birmingham Conservatoire.

As a concert pianist, she has appeared at major venues and her CD of encores, Endless Song, was a featured album of the week on Classic FM. NEARLY one in four children across the Arun district are living in poverty.

Estimates released this week showed 22.4 per cent of its young people were growing up below the poverty line.

THe information was compiled from tax data and the Labour Force Survey to put the area 24th among councils in south-east England.

THe figures were compiled by the End Child Poverty coalition to highlight what it calls the growing crisis among the most deprived sections of the community.

Anna Feuchtwang, chief executive of the National Children's Bureau, said:

"Poverty can hold back children in many ways.

"It can mean children don't reach a good level of health or development, do well in school or reach their potential in employment.

"THe Government has pledged action through its social mobility policy, but the scale of child poverty that this new data reveals means we urgently need a wider commitment from across government to improve the living standards of children, young people and families."

THe coalition is calling for the freeze on children's benefits until 2020 to end.

Past is uncovered in surprise at museum

Local historians have been delighted by the discovery at the venue devoted to the town's past.

THe chance find has restored a piece of Bognor Regis history which had been hidden for decades.

THey intend to keep the tiles which denote the building's previous use as a pub run by the Henty & Constable brewery proudly on display.

Bognor Regis Local History Society chairman Greg Burt: “I was very excited when I was told about the tiles and I have had a lot of positive feedback about them on social media. People don’t want the sign covered and we are certainly going to leave it on display.

"We have the luxury of doing that, whereas a business might want to cover

it up. We had an old gas lamp installed on the pavement outside a few years ago and this sign is also bringing the town’s past out into the open.”

“THere was a wooden sign for the museum across there. It was starting to fall apart. We got a grant from Aldwick Parish Council to replace it, which we thought was a nice thing to do.

“When our contractor started to take the old sign apart, which must have been put up when we took over the museum in 2011, he saw they had put the sign over what had been there previously.

“When he took it down, he found the original pub sign underneath. I was so excited. It has to be the original sign from when the pub was built in 1933.

“I can’t find any picture of the pub with this sign on it. It must have been covered over in about 1955 when Watneys took

over Henty & Constable.”

THe site was a pub for decades. It was originally THe Wheatsheaf before that moved to its present site in Hawthorn Road. THe pub’s old building was taken over by THe Berkeley Arms, which moved a few doors along West Street.

“It is fantastic that we have uncovered part of the history of Bognor Regis under our very noses that no-one in living memory can even remember," said Mr Burt. “You can still see the work that has gone into the tiling all those years ago and it just looks lovely.

“It makes the front of the building look much more realistic."

THe tiling matches the style of the building’s gable, which has always been on show. THe display measures about 10m across and each tile is some 30cm high. THe letters are in royal blue.

From page one Mr Badioli said Arun and Chichester Citizen’s Advice was talking to its two district councils and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP ) to get support for coping with the extra work.

“We are hopeful,” he said. “We are discussing with the DWP to get some training to ensure applications are made as efficiently as possible and avoid any delays.

“THere is also funding from the DWP, which the councils can apply for and sub-contract us to deliver the service. Both councils have been very supportive and we hope that will happen.”

THe total increase in clients from last October to December came to 500.

Debt, housing and family concerns also increased.

Mr Badioli is well aware of the challenges faced by those who work and volunteer for Citizen’s Advice.

He joined the charity on October 6, 2003, as a volunteer. He had moved to the Arun area from London, where he worked as a restaurant manager, to help his partner’s brother deal with the benefits system. He enjoyed the experience and his mother-in-law, a former manager of Chichester Citizen’s Advice, encouraged him to volunteer in the Littlehampton centre.

He was still working as a supervisor of the cleaning, catering and security company at THe Body Shop.

But he quickly realised he wanted to quit that role and work for Citizen’s Advice. He became a debt advisor in

2005. A series of promotions ended in his appointment as the chief executive of the three centres this month.

“It’s exciting but nervous at the same time,” said Mr Badioli, 47, of North Bersted. “Although I have been involved for some time, now I have all the responsibility to provide the services we want and to ensure the service goes in a good direction.”

He paid tribute to the 21 full and parttime staff and 130 volunteers for their indispensable efforts.

As well as universal credit, Mr Badioli is looking to expand the centres’ services by increasing its fuel poverty work in a county-wide project with councils and fellow Citizen’s Advice centres.

His goal is for Citizen’s Advice advisors to ensure those struggling to pay their fuel bills get as much income as possible. THe councils’ fuel poverty advisors would concentrate on achieving the best fuel deal.

“THe talks are going well and I am hopeful this work will start by the end of the year,” he said.

THe Bognor Regis centre in the town hall also faces an uncertain future. Its premises are likely to be affected by the changes Arun District Council wants to make as part of its regeneration of the Regis Centre site.

“We have raised the issue with the council and made sure that when they are drawing up their plans, we are taken into consideration,” he added. “It’s not going to happen straight away but we have to make sure we are included.”

` Schools' jobs fair TWO RECRUITMENT fairs are being held to enable people to discover more about working in education.

West Sussex County Council is hosting the recruitment events. THe first is being held on February 3, from 10am-2pm, at Fontwell Park Racecourse.

THe second will be at the same times on February 24 at Ifield Community College, Crawley. As well as teaching, roles in schools include teaching assistant, learning mentor, bursar, premises manager and technician.

Cllr Richard Burnett, the council's cabinet member for education and skills, said: "THese fairs are an excellent way to find out more about the wide range of roles available in schools."

Schools, teacher training organisations, apprenticeship providers and other education service teams will be among those at both fairs.

` Course in Tai Chi A NEW falls prevention and Tai Chi course is set to start in West Meads.

Arun Wellbeing is holding the latest of its successful nine-week courses for people aged 65-plus.

THe falls awareness workshop takes place in the first week to help participants build confidence and reduce their risk of failing.

It is followed by eight weeks of Tai Chi to help to improve balance and flexibility and promote strength.

Sheila was the oldest in town THE FUNERAL is being held today of a talented woman who was the oldest student in the Bognor Regis area.

Relatives and friends of Sheila Haywood are joining together at 2pm at St Mary's Church in Felpham to say goodbye to the active 94-year-old.

Sheila passed away on Christmas Day at the home in Littlehampton where she had lived happily for the past year.

She had attended her final woodcarving classes at THe Arena Skills Centre in Bognor Regis just a few weeks earlier.

She had been a regular in the adult education classes led by Paul Bignell for 12 years. He said: "I was told by the adult education officials Sheila was the oldest student they had ever had.

"She was a leading light in the classroom.

She was very talented and produced some interesting items, which were varied. She never stuck to the same theme."

Sheila had built up a wonderful collection of her carvings. Her favourite was a walking stick in the shape of an eagle's head. It went everywhere with her and will join her for her final journey.

Sheila was born to Mr and Mrs Binch, who had built up a large lace business in Nottingham. Her father was the Lord Mayor of Nottingham and she was taken to school in a chauffeur-driven limousine and the family had a large motor cruiser on the River Trent.

THe family's factories were switched to making parachutes in the Second World War. For the war effort, Sheila joined up as a Land Girl, milking cows and making

butter. She then joined the RAF and was assigned to Bomber Command, 207 Squadron, based in Spilsby. THe squadron carried out night-time raids over Germany, which included Bremen.

Sheila's role was to develop photos which the bombers' cameras took during the raids to analyse their impact.

In a memoir of her wartime work, she stated: "THis showed how near they were to their targets, usually 100 per cent.

"THe photographs had to be crystal sharp of the bombs going down. We worked every night that the raids were on, finishing around 3-4am.

"THe prints were then rushed to Bomber Command overnight by a security airman on a motor-cycle as speed was of the essence."

After the war, Sheila married Haydn and the family, by then with three children, went on a south coast tour one year.

Her husband spontaneously applied for a job in Bognor Regis as an accountant with a business and was appointed to start a new chapter in the family's life.

As her family grew up and moved away, Sheila immersed herself in a variety of activities. She joined Rose Green Art Club and won many prizes for her work.

Sheila also joined the Aldingbourne Gun Club where her keen eye enabled her to win many awards there as well.

She became the president of the gun club for 15 years after she stopped shooting.

Sheila is survived by two children, eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Police commissioner told town centre needs action URGENT action is needed to tackle crime in Bognor Regis town centre, a shopkeeper has said.

Cllr Paul Wells complained to Sussex Police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne taking another £12 a year from residents in council tax would fail to add a single police officer or PCSO on the streets.

Shoplifters could act with impunity at times, he stated at a special meeting of Arun District Council's overview select committee.

Cllr Wells (LD, Hotham) said: “We are not seeing any added police from what I can see. THe stable door has closed and the horse has bolted.

“THe town centres have just been abandoned by local policing teams. THat’s the sad reality of it today and we need to get that back. You are doing the best job you can with the resources you have got but, at the moment, the criminals are having a heyday.”

He said he had seen shoplifters stockpiling stolen goods in the doorway of an empty shop in the town centre before the meeting. He reported the incident to police but the only response was a patrol car driving past 30 minutes later.

“Shoplifting is being treated as a low priority and is funding other crime in our district. It fuels drug crime. THere’s a whole number of other issues.

“When a shopkeeper reports a crime to Sussex Police, it comes back it is not in the public interest to follow up on that particular crime. I find that absolutely outrageous. A crime is a crime at the end

of the day. It does not matter how much it costs Sussex Police to pursue it. If it is on the law books as a crime, it should be investigated.”

Acting Inspector Danny West, who joined Mrs Bourne at Tuesday's meeting, said: “Problems with shoplifting are not new. I remember going into shops in the town centre about it 20 years ago Shoplifting is still investigated.

"Certain forces will pursue a line that they will not investigate if the goods are below £50. But that is not the case with Sussex Police."

Police officers had autonomy about which reported crimes they pursued, he said. “If there is no CCTV, we don’t know who the person is and there’s no witnesses to identify them – unfortunately, that will be filed as undetected. THat’s nothing new.

“However, if you report a shoplifting and you have evidence, my expectation of my officers is that we will do that.”

Mrs Bourne said her budget, agreed last week, would protect the roles of 480 police officer and staff for the next four years. She had taken advantage of the relaxation of fundraising rules by the Government after years of cuts. In spite of that, police were called upon to do more and more.

"When all the other doors are closed, the police's doors remain open. I really stress that because I know the pressure the men and women who serve are currently under," she said.

Cllr David Edwards (C, Felpham E) spoke about a 42 per cent rise in crime in the village in the past year.

` Police seek man about burglary

POLICE have named a Bognor Regis man they want to speak to in connection with a burglary.

Officers said they were keen to talk to James Beaney about the break-in that happened in East Preston last month.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Officers investigating the break in at a house in Michel Grove on the evening of Saturday, December 30, believe that he may have important information about the incident."

Mr Beaney is described as being white, 5ft 10in tall, of proportionate build, with receding short mousey hair and blue eyes.

He also has connections with Littlehampton and Brighton.

Anyone who sees him or knows about his whereabouts should report the information online to Sussex Police at sussex.police.uk/ contact-us or call 101, quoting serial 993 of 30/12.

School is sport winner A NEW national sports award has been won by a Bognor Regis school.

THe Regis School has become one of just 104 nationally to gain the special platinum award of the School Games Mark. THe award is only open to schools with five successive gold awards.

Mike Garlick, the school's principal, said: "I am delighted that our school's dedication to providing comprehensive sports opportunities to our own students and to other children across our local and wider community has been recognised.

"Involvement in sport not only helps physical well-being but also has a positive impact on mental health. It encourages leadership, team work, resilience and excellent communication skills, all of which are important in today's world."

THe School Games Mark is a Government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 and run by national charity, the Youth Sport Trust. It had nearly 9,000 applicants last year.

Taking part in the part in the scheme allows schools to evaluate their PE provision. A gold award

can be achieved only by meeting certain criteria.

THese include engaging a high percentage of young people in curricular and extra-curricular activities, taking part in a minimum number of competitions across different sports and reaching out to target groups and inactive pupils.

Ali Oliver, the Youth Sport Trust's chief executive, said: "At a time when young people are becoming less healthy and less active, the school games produce opportunities for millions across the country to participate in sport and reap the benefits of an active lifestyle, both on and off the field. THe Regis School are really leading the way."

Other School Games Marks awarded in West Sussex west were: Gold - Bersted Green, Bishop Luffa, Bishop Tufnell, Boxgrove, Downview, Edward Bryant, Seal Academy, St Richard's and West Wittering.

Silver - Funtington, Nyewood Junior, Southway,South Bersted, St Anthony's and St Mary's.

Bronze - Aldingbourne, Bartons, East Wittering, Kingsham, North Mundham, Parklands, Rose Green Junior and Southbourne Junior.

Unisex loos' crime worries UNISEX toilets to be installed in the Bognor Regis area could lead to sexual harassment, a councillor has claimed.

Cllr Vicky Rhodes said she was totally opposed to the change from men's and women's public loos to one for both sexes.

Unisex toilets have been approved by Arun District Council for Bognor Regis seafront, as reported. THey were also backed at the meeting to replace the current loos at Culver Road in Felpham.

THe previous week, Cllr Rhodes (C, Yapton) had told Arun's full meeting she disliked the idea of both sexes using the same conveniences.

"I have worries about unisex toilets. I really don't agree with them. I think they could be a breeding ground for sexual harassment. I personally would not want to use them."

THat view was shared by many people who had responded to a message she had placed on social media.

"People don't want them. Even the men don't want them. Most women don't want to be queuing for the toilets after them," she said.

Cllr Barbara Oakley (C, Middleton) told the same meeting about her strong concerns over unisex toilets. She repeated her views at last Wednesday's Arun development control committee when the two new sets of toilets were agreed.

She supported the principle of replacements but was totally opposed to the introduction of unisex sites.

Cllr Mrs Oakley urged the council to seek public opinion about the change.

"My one concern is the lack of consultation on the major change of

policy from single sex units to unisex.

"I don't understand why, with a massive change of policy, we are so terrified of consulting people.

"We have made a song and dance about consulting on the linear park. But, on something which affects virtually every resident and tourist, has been slipped through without any consultation whatsoever," she said.

Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham W) said: "I support everything Mrs Oakley has said. I am not happy with this at all. I will be voting against it."

But Arun's cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: "THis is an operational matter. It is not for members to debate.

"When it comes down to it, it is down to the chief executive to decide these things.

THe development control committee's chairman, Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said disabled people had always used unisex toilets.

"THroughout the district, we have had unisex toilets for decades and we call them disabled toilets.

"Anyone should be able to use any unisex toilet. If it's OK for disabled people to use a unisex toilet, it's OK for us to to use them. Anything else is discriminatory."

Friends are needed for lonely former air force personnel VOLUNTEERS are being sought across Bognor Regis to tackle loneliness.

THe RAF Association is seeking helpers for its befriending service which pairs volunteers with the RAF community who are struggling with feeling lonely or isolated.

THe service is a valuable source of companionship to members of the RAF family of which 170,000 veterans deal with issues of isolation.

Katharine Montgomery, the association's volunteer manager, said: "Befrienders can play such an important role in somebody's life and, while there is no single type of

person we look for, a good befriender is someone that is caring and empathetic, able to build a rapport with people, reliable and a good listener."

Volunteers support their 'befriendees' in several simple ways.

THis includes going round for a cup of tea, researching community groups to attend or chatting on the phone.

Volunteers gain new skills, build confidence, meet new people and have the chance to give back to their community.

DETAILED survey work is being lined up to bring proposals for a park in Bognor Regis to fruition.

Arun District Council is moving forward with its Hothamton linear park plans to begin preparing final designs and parking numbers.

Work is being undertaken after councillors approved the initial designs earlier this month, as reported.

A council spokeswoman said: "THe concept proposals can now progress to the next stage of the process which includes all necessary discussions with statutory bodies and other relevant organisations, including adjoining owners, fire and safety, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents with regards to children's play, and design related to adjacent parking and car movements.

"Detailed survey work will also be undertaken to inform the final designs and parking numbers.

"THis work will be done in conjunction with the council and the forthcoming planning application will be subject to further public consultation."

THe linear park will include highquality play and leisure features, including water play with fountains, alongside a trim trail for adults and a lot of seating.

Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said:" By delivering the park ourselves, we can ensure that the finished result meets the high quality specification we are seeking, and this will increase the value of the land for the residential parts of the site.

"We look forward to being able to market the residential parts of the site and, ultimately, deliver essential new homes for students or local workers as well as new apartments - with the best view in town."

THe linear park will be created on the Hothamton car park and sunken garden between Queensway and West Street.

Rox jazz evening is great success JAZZ musicians delighted a packed audience in a Bognor Regis pub.

THe three acts in the latest Rox session played to a consistently high standard to leave the Hothampton Arms music lovers wanting more.

THe night was the latest to be held by the music and arts charity to give musicians in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area the chance to perform.

Rox co-founder Steve Goodheart said: "People couldn't believe they were in Bognor Regis town centre listening to music of such a high standard.

"All the artists are right up to coming back again for another night."

Among those performing at the London Road pub last Friday were Mike Bosley, who played saxophone and clarinet to a backing track, and the James Wheeler Quartet.

"THe quartet took the roof off," said

Steve. "THe way those four guys played their jazz was so hot and so tight.

"THe night showed that the quality of musicianship in this area is phenomenal."

THe jazz session followed a blues night at the pub, nicknamed THe Hoff, held by the Rox. Next month, on February 24, will be a jive night for which dancers are being sought to add further enjoyment to the musicians being lined up.

Steve said: "We want to give people a different level of sound to that which they are used to having at a town centre pub. We want to get away from having bands playing covers, which are the usual fare, in favour of bands which are playing their own version of music.

"We want to give them the chance to perform to people and it's good to have such a quality venue in the town."

Temporary rooms plan for care home HOMELESS families from Worthing could be accommodated in a former Bognor Regis care home.

Lucky Gohler, of UK Car Park Management, has applied for planning permission to change the use of the building to emergency housing.

He has asked Arun District Council to create six bedsits, eight one-bed flats and two two-bed flats in the redundant premises in Aldwick Road.

It was previously used for 22 cluster flats as the Aldwick Rest Home with a kitchen, office and recreational room.

Mr Gohler's planning agent, Stuart Paine, says in a statement with the planning application: "We are proposing 16 selfcontained emergency housing flats. Each self-contained flat has been considered to meet the Arun local plan space standards as much as possible within the constraints of the existing building.

"Each flat contains facilities including: hob, sink and draining board, 600mm food preparation worktop space, hot and cold water supply, electrical sockets, extractor fan, waste bin, fire blanket, food/utensil storage and a fridge freezer.

“We are proposed two accessible flats on the ground-floor.”

A planning history submitted with the application shows the premises - two substantial mid-terrace houses - were converted from a private hotel to a rest home in 1978.

THe appearance of the building will stay largely the same in the proposals by Mr Gohler.

His plan has been backed by Steve Hay, the private sector options officer

at Worthing and Adur councils, who has told Arun: "My role is to acquire accommodation for people whom the council have a duty to accommodate.

"Not only would this fulfil a need for self-contained accommodation, it would, in my opinion, be a much better and more suitable alternative to shared accommodation and less disruptive to the local area.

"Following the approval of the scheme, we anticipate working with the proprietor to provide good quality, suitable accommodation to people with housing need.

“We will be working closely with the landlord to ensure that the property is effectively managed.”

Mr Paine said he and Mr Gohler believed the latest plans were a better option for the site than the bedsit scheme they had originally proposed.

"We believe that emergency housing is a better fit for the site than the house in multiple occupation proposals originally discussed and have been in discussion with the neighbouring local authority at Adur and Worthing, who have a desperate need for emergency accommodation.

"THe relative urban location of the building would bring its own level of disturbance regardless of the use of the property.

"However, we believe that the proposed self-contained flats will lead to an overall reduction in noise and disturbance to that of full-time staff attending to a residential care home. No pets will be allowed in the premises, removing the possibility for barking dogs etc," he states.

Blake author praises exhibition about Felpham's famous resident NOVELIST Beryl Kingston has praised a major exhibition about Felpham's most famous resident.

Beryl wrote about William Blake's three years in the village from 1800 and his trial for sedition in her book, Gates of Paradise.

Some of the poet's greatest works from poetry to painting have been put on display by the National Trust at Petworth House.

It is the first exhibition to bring together in a show many of the works that were inspired by Blake's experience of living in Felpham.

Beryl, who lives in Aldwick, said: "THe first thing you see as you enter the Blake exhibition at Petworth House is THomas Phillips’ familiar portrait of Blake, carefully posed and painted in oils.

"It’s an inspired introduction because it looks as though Blake himself is welcoming us in.

"But, after the bold colouring of THomas Phillips' oils, the overall impression of Blake’s work is what a limited palette he had to work with.

"His paintings are basically grey, fawn and white, with touches of green, pale blue, pink and an eye-catching red.

"Just to your left as you enter there are two of the poetical heads he painted for Hayley, a blank-eyed Milton and Spencer.

THey are on loan from the Manchester City Galleries and are both painted in identical colours of peacock green and pale brown.

"What an impressive sight all 12 of his poetic heads must have been.

"As we progress around the room, something else catches the eye and the imagination and that is how often Blake’s elongated figures resemble columns and trees and often form carved and curving borders for the central figure of the picture, very noticeable in A Vision of the Last Judgement and The Fall of Man, which are displayed side by side.

In The Fall of Man, Christ is surrounded by weeping angels whose white wings are curved like Corinthian columns.

"Some of the pictures here achieve the inspired grandeur of The Ancient of Days, which doesn’t appear here. However, Satan does, arousing the rebel angels where he looks pained but has the body of a Greek athlete and in a companion picture in which he is a bronze figure, spot-lit by a waterfall of white light on a canvas full of moody reds, browns and greens.

"On the next wall, there are engravings that are as small as postage stamps, but well worth stooping to study.

"And on the fourth wall of the room is a picture I hadn’t seen before called The Sea of Time and Space, which the notes alongside explain ‘appears to revolve around the theme of choice between imagination and the order of classical thought'.

"Classical thought is a pale, female figure, veiled and statuesque, painted in pale brown and greeny-grey. Kneeling beside her is a male figure in red, who is looking straight out at his audience and dominates the canvas. So he could well

represent Blake’s imagination. THere’s a lot to consider in this exhibition."

Blake arrived in Felpham from London with his wife, Catherine, and it was the only place outside the capital where he lived. THey rented a cottage and he famously described Felpham as 'the sweetest spot on Earth'.

THe display re-unites the works he made during those three years with later pieces that were infomed by the landscapes of the Sussex coast and countryside.

Among the works by Blake on show are those on loan from the British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Tate.

THey have combined with three paintings by Blake from the Petworth collection and a fourth on loan from National Trust property Arlington Court, in Devon.

Andrew Loukes, the exhibition's manager, said: "William Blake in Sussex is not only a subject of great interest but also of national cultural significance, not least because the famous lines that were later adopted for the song Jerusalem were written in the county.

"It's very exciting to be mounting the first exhibition to re-unite many of Blake's Sussex-related works, especially at Petworth - the only great English country house to hold major paintings by the artist." Michael Tristram, of the nursery, says in a statement with the plans: "THe-two-old polytunnels were already in place in the mid-1970s when the land was purchased by Walberton Nursery for nursery operations, having been used for the same purpose by the previous owner.

County set to increase tax COUNTY councillors are set to increase their share of council tax by nearly five per cent.

West Sussex County Council's cabinet is due to discuss the proposal next Tuesday. If approved, as expected, it will go to the full council on February 16. THe proposed rise will add 12.6p a week - or £6.50 a year - to the bill of a band D council tax payer.

But the council's leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith, has called for a long-term view from the government towards the funding of councils. Without that, she believed the future of vital services would be at risk.

Earlier this month, the Government offered the county council the chance to add a further one per cent to its share of the total council tax bill faced by homeowners across West Sussex.

THis was accepted by the council's performance and finance committee last THursday and forms part of the recommended budget to the cabinet.

Cllr Goldsmith said it had been 'incredibly hard' to recommend the increase to help to cope with the rising demand for care services such as child protection and adult social care.

"It is against all my instincts for me to consider taking the incredibly hard decision to raise council tax when I know some residents are struggling with their own finances.

"But it would also be against my instincts for me not to offer the high quality services our residents deserve.

"THis decision would mean that vital services can continue to be run and be developed without us having to make extremely difficult decisions about the future of some of those services we

know our residents rely on.

"One way or another, there is little part of life in West Sussex that we are not responsible for or involved in.

"None of this we do lightly. But we need to plan, we need to be able to continue to evolve and grow as the issues and demands change and we simply can't do that with a short-term view of our finances.

"It is wrong for us, and county councils across the country, to continue to have to be reliant on taxing our residents in the current piecemeal way every year to attempt to plug the gap left by central government."

"We have played our part well when Government asked us to and taken more than 30 per cent out of our budget at exactly the same time as demand and need rises," said Cllr Goldsmith.

"It's time that the Government supports us with a properly funded long-term settlement that enables us to plan and prepare for the challenges we know are ahead and, in particular, to help our growing elderly population.

"We are not alone in West Sussex. THis is a national problem that deserves a national answer. I, and many other council leaders, have been asking for years for a long-term solution to local government finances."

Agreeing the proposed budget would enable the county council to put into place proposals to tackle homelessness, by working with other councils to increase the number of temporary rooms, improve road safety, and accelerate programmes on solar power as well as its current work with care, roads, schools and fire and rescue, Cllr Goldsmith added.

Station merges old and new A STATION fit for a king has been created for Bognor Regis, the town's MP has said.

Nick Gibb said the makeover of the terminus was the start of huge changes. Disused parts of the building would be used again later this year.

"When I come to Bognor Regis station, I think about the hundreds of thousands of excited children who arrive here to start their summer holidays beside the seaside whether at Butlin's, in a B&B or with their elderly aunt in Felpham or Middleton.

"I think about the evacuees who arrived here during the war to escape the dangers of the Blitz in London, some of whom have moved here.

"I think further back to King George V and Queen Mary, who arrived at this station with great pomp and ceremony to spend a holiday with their friends at Craigweil House in Aldwick.

"THis work has preserved the station's

Edwardian heritage as well as looking to the future with the creative digital hub that will be opened soon."

Other dignitaries at the celebration ceremony last Friday were Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, Cllr Phil Hitchins, Arun District Council chairman Jacqui Pendleton, Arun's chairman of Bognor Regis regeneration, Cllr Phil Hitchins, and Paul Childs, the company secretary of the Railway Heritage Trust.

A performance by the Aldingbourne Trust charity, which has close links with Southern, began the event with Beside the Seaside.

Paul Best, Southern's project manager, said the station's cafe and news shop were being marketed. "Nobody has come forward with firm offers yet but there has been quite a lot of interest from local businesses," he said. THe clock would be repaired but needed a lot of work.

` Aldwick grants MORE than £5,000 has been awarded

by Aldwick parish councillors to organisations which benefit its residents.

THe total of £5,110 was spread among 11 groups and ranged from £75 to £1,000.

THe highest amount was given to Sammy Community Transport and the Nautical Training Corps - TS Montrose, with £1,000 each.

Others to benefit from the council's latest annual grants were: Rose Green Infant School PTA, Victim Support, Arun and Chichester Citizen's Advice, Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts, Willowhale Community Association, Bognor Regis Town Youth FC, West Sussex Mediation Service, Girl Guiding (Bognor Regis West) and Bognor Regis Local History Society.

Councillors have also agreed to award two further grants. One for £500 has gone to Rose Green Junior School towards the refurbishment of its assembly hall.

THe other is £300 to the committee of Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day towards the hire of a stage and PA equipment.

DARREN JUDD has applied for planning approval to open a microbrewery in Bognor Regis.

He is seeking planning permission to change the use of an empty shop of 40 sq m at Unit 4, Blake House, in the High Street, into the new business.

He expects the micro-brewery will employ one full-time and two part-time staff if he receives the go-ahead from Arun District Council.

News about the hub's progress came as a ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the £2.5m scheme to give the station the biggest makeover since it

opened in 1902.

THe work has brought the present into the past by paying homage to the landmark's Edwardian heritage and its status as a Grade II-listed building. Its listing was achieved in 1989 by Bognor Regis resident Greg Burt, below right, when the building was set to be replaced.

Renovating the station was a joint project between Southern's parent company, Govia THameslink Railway, Arun District Council, Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust.

Other major changes have included: * A regenerated square outside the station and new canopy * New windows, concourse floor and brickwork * New ticket office designed to

match the former bookshop * New cafe, taxi office and newsagents * THe first waiting room for many years * New customer information screens and signs * A heritage-style barrier between concourse and platforms * Better station lighting and upgraded CCTV for improved security Lucinda Valentine, Network Rail's scheme sponsor, said: "THe work at Bognor Regis station is a shining example of the rail industry working in partnership with other organisations to deliver a better, more modern railway for passengers while have also protected railway heritage."

Pupils back charity with costumes A FORENSIC scientist, a Minion and a sufragette were among the characters who took part in a Westergate school's charity event.

THe costumes were worn by students and staff at Ormiston Six Villages Academy to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

THe student winner was Georgia MayCooper, who came dressed as the scientist to reflect the career she is seeking and she received an Amazon voucher for her excellent efforts.

THe runners-up were Charlie Hobbs - a Minion to reflect his ambition to become an animator; Pacey Baker - who dressed as a film-maker/director; Finlay Glasspool a gamekeeper; and Nathaniel MolineauxInglis (a scientist).

THeir outfits best reflected the theme of inspiring people and aspiration for the future by representing a job they would like to do or which was related to a person who inspires them.

Some of the other career roles seen around the academy included wouldbe writer Chelsea O'Neill, who went as a feline character from an idea for a book, and Liam Richards, who was a boxer.

THeir imaginations enabled £872 to be raised for the charity.

Umbar Sharif, the academy's principal, said: "I'm so proud of all our students who

contributed to this fantastic fundraising effort.

"THey've all worked so hard for the day to be a success."

THe money was raised after Year 11 students, Katie Wilds and Maisie White, organised the event at the Lime Avenue academy.

For the staff, associate assistant principal drama Emma Molineaux-Inglis went dressed as sufragette Emmeline Pankhurst and associate assistant principal head of arts Daniel Munt went in as a conductor and Chris Marsh, the associate assistant principal humanities, fulfilled his ambition as a five-year-old of being a coal miner.

Just before the event, the academy was delighted by an offer from Colin Racine, owner of Collins Carpets and Flooring in Rustington, to match the donations raised by students.

He said: "THis is a charity I am extremely keen to support and which carries out fantastic work in helping people living with cystic fibrosis, along with conducting vital research work to improve people's quality of life.

"It's wonderful that so many pupils embraced the chance to support this charity and had fun dressing up for the day."

REPAIRS are being planned to a car park in Rose Green.

Places for People are said to be compiling a programme of work for the large site at the Willowhale community site.

THe news was given by Cllr John Bass to Aldwick Parish Council's latest meeting after he met the housing association a few days earlier.

"I raised the matter of having the car park resurfaced and relined," he said. "THey agreed and said they would be looking to see how quickly they could resurface it.

"THe signs are so bad there is going to be an accident there."

THe one-way markings at the site, off Pryors Lane were worn away, he said. THe car park, with scores of spaces, serves the parish council offices, Willowhale Library, Willowhale Community Centre and Grove House Surgery.

Cllr Bass also said Places for People were set to bring in a permit system to enable residents to park in the area.

"THere are a lot of people parking in their spaces who are not residents around here. Places for People are to issue free permits for the people who live in its properties to enable their vehicles to be identified.

Young carers' support backed A BOGNOR REGIS school has been one of the first in the county a trial a scheme to recognise young carers.

THe learning resource pack was put together by young carers to raise awareness of their roles and what schools can do to help.

THe Regis School was among the initial schools to use the pack.

Katie Robinson, its team leader for personal, social, health and citizenship education, said: "It has been particularly helpful for the pastoral team in our school who are often the first point of contact for students.

"As students, I think it will help them identify if they are a 'young carer' and, if so, there is extra support available

A DECADE of moonlight walking in Chichester is being celebrated this year.

St Wilfrid's Hospice wants to make the occasion on May 5 even more special than usual.

THe aim is to break some records, with 1,000 people walking and £100,000 raised.

It is seeking volunteers to help to turn its plans into reality.

Hospice head of fundraising Jerry Doyle said: "It literally is a night to remember so don't forget to put it in your diaries.

"We want to thank everyone for their support. As well as being very moving, the

Walkers will be able to sign up soon at stwh.co.uk/moonlight. Entry costs £16 and walkers get a T-shirt and goodies like a heart-warming snack breakfast.

THe hospice hopes to start the night with a light show around the Westgate Leisure Centre where people gather to take part in the 5k or 10k walk to support the hospice in memory of loved ones.

Helpers are needed on the night for all aspects of the occasion. THese range from marshalling walkers along the route to helping to run stalls, signing in

A young carer is someone who is affected by the health needs of a relative. THere are hundreds of young carers across West Sussex who look after loved ones. But many go unnoticed.

THe West Sussex Young Carers Service has developed the pack to enable teachers to introduce what can be a sensitive subject to raise in schools. It also includes young carer information for staff, lesson plans and a short film.

All the county's secondary schools have access to the information pack.

IN February popular choir group THe Sixteen are embarking on a tour of the UK with its own period instrument orchestra and will be making a stop at Chichester Cathedral for one night only.

Winter time is a winner for finding quality wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

PICTURE this - Lavender Bay, adjacent to Sydney Harbour Bridge, standing outside the renowned Sails Restaurant with a glass of 2006 Gosset Grand Millésime à la main, so to speak, - fondest memories of fine dining in fine company (including native Sydneysiders Melinda and Blake) and a delectable French Champagne that regaled my palate given its freshness, crispness and great structure (all three elements enhanced by the absence of malolactic fermentation) and, moreover, oozed lemon zest, crisp grapefruit and delicious acidity.

THis excellent vintage combines richness, elegance, complexity and finesse to fully justify its retail price of circa £63!

Back to Blighty and re-connecting to winter time, one must never discount (in the primary sense of the verb) either Aldi or Lidl in the quest for reasonablypriced, but good quality wines. Off I duly headed, in intrepid fashion, to a Lidl store and commenced perusal of their white wine selection.

I wended my way to the remnants

of the Christmas Wine Cellar, as their Wine Cellar represents best purchases and, for an outlay of just £4 99, was able to procure a 2016 Cirò Bianco made from predominantly Greco Bianco, a white grape variety brought to Calabria by the Ancient Greeks.

THis fragrant wine is fresh and dry and would pair well with either risotto or salad and is worth a punt! My next pick was a 2016 Coonawarra Chardonnay priced at £5.79 of South Australian provenance in the heart of the Limestone Coast and this wine proved to be a perfectly palatable Chardonnay with citrus, red apples and tropical fruits to the fore and green melon and

pineapple on the palate.

For £5.99, the 2016 Abellio Albariño Riàs Baixas made by Bodegas Gallegas in the Sainès zone of Riàs Baixas on the extreme north-west of Atlantic Spain is fresh and fruity with an apple peel and citrus nose added to a hint of salt and is dry with gluggy fruit and a good mouthfeel!

Back to Lidl's core range, a 2016 Mâcon-Villages for £6.75 is a smooth, slightly buttery tropical and apple flavoured Burgundy eminently quaffable on its own, but also a fine accompaniment to a roast chicken dish.

But it also makes me feel really old…how can it be possible that my oldest child, is driving!

I think all of us parents would agree that it’s a lifetime’s work to keep your children strong and healthy, and I am always trying to come up with new ways to keep them interested in eating healthy foods. Anyone who has teenagers knows this can sometimes be a challenge! But a happy healthy teenager means happier, less stressed parents.

Nutritional yeast has been around forever, but seems to be creating a bit of a ‘buzz’ again at the moment. It is a great flavour that can liven up any dish, but what exactly is it?

Nutritional yeast is a non-active, cultured strain of yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae, to be exact). It looks like yellow fish food flakes, is not overly attractive, but punches a good amount of cheesy flavour and goodness. It can be found in most natural food stores and is usually grown on

molasses, deactivated with heat, and dried into the flake form. Still not selling it to you?

It's often enriched with vitamin B12, which is only found naturally in animal products like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products, so for vegans or vegetarians who don't consume animal products, nutritional yeast can be a great replacement.

It is also a fabulous source of the B vitamins riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and folic acid, which (depending on the brand) can provide more than 100 percent of your daily-recommended value of most of these B vitamins in a one tablespoon serving.

Nutritional yeast serves up about 3g of highquality protein per 20 calorie serving and it contains all nine essential amino acids, which are required in the diet to build protein.

Community News & Views YOUNG people with special educational needs or disabilities will be able to receive support at an event in Chichester about finding a first job.

Teenagers over the age of 14 and their parents and carers have been invited to the First Steps to Adulthood open evening next Monday. THe event has been organised by West Sussex County Council and the West Sussex Parent Carer Forum.

Its aim is to provide young people with advice and guidance in advance of the time they left full-time education. As well as jobs, it will include general information about becoming more independent.

Cllr Richard Burrett, the county council's cabinet member for education and skills, pictured below, said: "We hope that the event will give young people ideas and information about the different opportunities available to them after they leave school and help them to think about the routes they may follow into the world of work and towards independence.

"THis is a chance to have questions answered on the big lifestyle choics such as employment and housing.

"Whether you want to find out about future jobs or get to know the housing market a bit better - this is a must-see event for you."

THe drop-in will take place from 6pm-8pm in Chichester College's conference hall in Westgate Fields.

It follows similar events last year in Worthing and Horsham.

THeir success has encouraged more than 30 organisations to make the latest occasion the biggest to date.

THe parent carer forum is a support group formed to help improve the lives of children and young people aged up to 25 with extra needs. Helen Merrick, its post 16 and mental health lead, said: "Talking to parent carers and their families, it became apparent that families and young people want information on the options available to them when moving on from school."

GREEN Party members in Bognor Regis and Chichester have responded with dismay to the Government's 25-year environmental plan.

Along with other environmental organisations, the Green Party believes the plan is worthless until it includes definite legislation to ensure its aims are carried through.

Isabel THurston, the group's spokeswoman, said: "THis Government, and many before it, have proved that all their fine words are swept away the minute there is a choice between the environment and profit. Equally, the target dates of 2040 are far too long. For many of our ecosystems, especially our oceans, too much damage has already been done.

"People are becoming aware of how much damage is being done, for example, by plastics and to allow 25 years for things to be done differently is irresponsible. THere are already alternatives to plastic that can be used for packaging."

West Sussex County Council's go-ahead this month for more flow testing at oil sites in the county went directly against the need to use less fossil fuels as the move was made towards a lower carbon economy in accordance with the government's global commitment, she said.

Chichester councillor Sarah Sharp is staging an air pollution survey in the city.

She said: "People want cleaner buses and safe cycle lanes and are beginning to see the link between our unhealthy reliance on the private car and how investing so much in road building is damaging our own well-being and our countryside.

"A combination of the community congestion charge and workplace parking levies enable councils to invest in public transport creating significant incentives for behavioural change, tackling congestion and air pollution within towns and cities.

"THe principle 'it should be cheaper to catch a bus than drive and park' is absolutely key."

SAILING trips around Chichester Harbour are on offer for people with dementia.

THe Sail Boat Project, pictured above, has teamed up with Dementia Adventure to organise the journey for Sussex residents.

Subsidised places are on offer for people living with dementia and a family member, carer or friend to join them on a half-day taster sail in the harbour or to arrange a bespoke sailing trip of one to seven days along the south coast.

THe work is supported by grants from Sussex Community Foundation and the Royal Southern Yacht Club.

Sail Boat Project skipper Ben Gillett said: "We hope to create lasting memories for people with dementia.

"THese trips will give people with dementia the opportunity to have engaging experiences in a safe environment with their family or carers, who will also

benefit from the new and exciting experience."

THe project's commercially endorsed skippers will be helped by two volunteers on each trip. Each will have been trained in working with people with dementia by Dementia Adventure.

Sail Boat Project is a workers' co-operative working from Chichester Harbour to widen access to sailing.

It is a Royal Yachting Association sail training centre and a RYA sailability organisation.

Dementia Adventure is the UK champion for outdoor activity holidays for people living with dementia.

Rewards for those who do include sailing activities for staff and clients.

KEEN photographers will be able to hear the exploits of a top snapper at one of his rare talks.

World-renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite will be holding his annual charity lecture at Middleton Camera Club.

He contacted the club after he saw one of its previous temporary displays in THe Arcade and offered to allow it to host the lecture.

It will take place at 7.30pm on April 30 at St Nicholas Church in Elmer Road, Middleton. Tickets are priced £10 each from middletoncameraclub.weebly.com Every penny which is taken will go to the Disabled Photographers' Society.

"THey are a truly inspirational group who have overcome sometimes challenging disabilities to produce some brilliant photography," said Ms Phillips.

"We are putting together whatever skills we have between us to put on a great event."

Tickets went on sale on November 1 but they sold out within a week to photographers from as far afield as Eastbourne, Guildford and Portsmouth. THis led the club to move to the current larger venue.

Mr Waite is a photographer who is passionate about the importance of engaging the landscape through photography.

His lectures are well-known for their humour and grace and take the audience on a colourful and enchanting journey.

THey are highly illustrated and the enjoyment members of the audience gain from the memorable occasions have been known to inspire many of them to explore the natural world further, with or without a camera.

He was walking through THe Arcade last summer visiting relatives in the area when he saw the display and admired the work on show and the club's initiative in using some empty shopfronts.

Some of the camera club members braved the winter weather to put their work on show on Bognor Regis seafront, pictured below.

THey decided to stage their latest 'pop up' exhibition in the promenade bandstand.

One of those involved, Lyn Phillips, said: "We were lucky in picking a beautiful Saturday unlike the Sunday that followed.

"Our intention was, as always, to introduce our club to local folk but, on this occasion, we really wanted to promote the talk."

SHARON HURST gave a fascinating demonstration at Bognor Regis Art Society's first demonstration of the year.

Sharon, pictured above in the early stages of her painting, showed how to create a wonderful picture of crashing waves in watercolour.

She revealed her secrets on blending colours to produce paintings with great depth.

She will return to the art society at 2pm tomorrow for a

workshop.

As well as trying to recreate her crashing waves, she will be encouraging the art society's members to draw or paint seashells.

THe session will be at the Jubilee Hall, off Chalcraft Lane, North Bersted.

THose who go along should take their own materials.

Sharon worked in watercolours but artists who like other media are welcome to use them.

SMALL charities and community groups across West Sussex are urged to ensure they apply to the final round of a funding scheme.

West Sussex County Council's community initiative fund provides grants targeted at supporting communities to deliver projects in their area.

THe scheme aims to encourage residents to be active, connect with each other, develop, learn and give back to their community.

Awards range from £1,000 to £5,000.

A total of £371,091 was awarded to good causes in the council's last full year to last March - and time is running up to make a claim for the cash in its current year.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the council's cabinet member for stronger, safer communities, said: "Many individuals and groups have benefited in the past from these grants and I would strongly encourage anyone who needs the support to apply.

"We are so proud of the work in our communities and are making it easier for groups to access this support."

Grant applications are considered at county local committees.

South Chichester and Eastern Arun still have funds available.

THe deadline for South Chichester is January 31 to be debated on February 20 and, for Eastern Arun, it is February 6 to be decided on March 6.

Cllr Kennard urged anyone who wanted to apply in the future to attend their local committee - the Bognor Regis committee meets on February 28 - to find out about the changes in how to apply.

Historian's research uncovered the past of town The love of the town by Gerard Young laid the foundation for much of our knowledge of its history EACH week as I work my way through the history of Bognor Regis, I have to use a variety of sources and information from other people to complete these articles. THere are a couple of major sources that I use and for this week I thought we could have a look at one of them.

When I first arrived in the town in 1979, I was unaware of its history and development.

THrough the local history society, I was to learn the history of the district. Also, through the society, I was introduced to research and the name of Gerard Young. THe name will evoke many happy memories for Bognorians, and for those of you who have no knowledge of this man I will explain.

His claim to fame is that he was a historian, artist and journalist, who did much to preserve the town's past. He was born in Leigh on Sea, Essex, and was educated at a preparatory school in Worthing. He had a sister, Patricia, and a brother, Derek.

He was an early developer and had his first poem published when he was 11 years

of age in the Worthing press of the time. He continued to write and on leaving school he was to take a management course at London’s Embassy THeatre.

He eventually became a publicity officer with Gaumont British Film Company, where he was involved in publicity for Gaumont films. By 1933, he was becoming a regular visitor to Aldwick and other areas of the town, until he finally moved to Meadow Cottage in Hoe Lane, Flansham, in 1938. THis house now has one of the Arun District Council Blue Plaques attached to the garden wall.

For the young Gerard, living in Worthing was his ideal place. A visit to Bognor was out of the question, as the local bus – apparently the No 31 - took too long. Derek recalled: “Bognor remained for us a place of mystery, somewhere way out west beyond the setting sun and imbued with all the romance and fascination of the unknown.” How that view was to change over the ensuing years.

f Gerard Young relaxing and in 1956 started work for the original Bognor Regis Post. He was to become a regular contributor with his historical and sometimes controversial articles.

Gerard was also greatly involved with local amateur theatrical groups, repertory theatre and the Esplanade THeatre. In addition, he was well-known for providing talks on old Bognor and visiting local schools. Sadly, he died in 1972, and that could have been the end of his work.

In my early days in the local history society, there were numerous occasions when the name of Gerard Young was mentioned or quoted in relation to things of a historical nature for the district. It was not until 1982 that I had my real introduction to this man, who appeared to have created such a following.

In March, 1982, his brother, Derek Young, was invited to the society to provide the guest speaker for one of its evenings. THe members spent an extremely interesting evening learning about this man. THe society then published a limited edition booklet recording this meeting, with the words and memories of Derek. One of his first poems in 1923 was about the sea, of which he had a passion: “THe sea, a wonderful expanse. Of restless and thunderous waves. Many a boat on her bosom afloat. THe terrible hurricane braves ….”

You may ask why Gerard Young was so important. During the 16 years that he resided in Meadow Cottage, he was to become totally involved in the district. He was a prominent member of the ‘Barnstormers’ where he produced many of their amateur dramatics.

He was to write a number of books that are still sought after today, namely Down Hoe Lane, The Chronicle of a Country Cottage’, Meadow Cottage and The Cottage in the Fields.

THese books became firm favourites both locally and by people wishing to hear of the development of his cottage and its garden. His articles were now being regularly published in the national press and numerous Catholic

magazines.

However, it is for his local history writings he will most be remembered. Over the years he gathered information, pictures, books, snaps and titbits, indeed anything about Bognor Regis. His articles covered such a wide range of subjects, but above all they brought local history to the foreground. He was well before his time in encouraging people to think about their surroundings, to remember the past and build on it for the future.

After the Second World War, a large garden was to become available as a park for the locals, following the death of the owner, William Fletcher. Gerard became interested in the story of the park and its history, and started to refer to the area as Hotham’s Park, until finally it was officially confirmed it would be known as Hotham Park.

At the time of his death, he was working on a publication that was to be the major history of the town. Following Derek Young’s talk to the history society in 1982, the publisher, who was hopeful that the work would come to fruition, contacted me, as I was secretary to the society.

Derek, who was also a journalist, finished his brother’s work and it is thanks to them both we are able to read the History of Bognor Regis published by Phillimore’s in 1983.

In 1988, I was given permission by the family to reproduce his book, The Chronicle of a Country Cottage. Derek came to the book launch at the museum then in Hotham Park and, immediately after, he visited Meadow Cottage, and I felt very lucky to be invited to accompany him. I was able to experience the cottage, which had so inspired Gerard to write his books.

All of us owe a debt to Gerard. For without his love of Bognor, his dedication in encouraging people to appreciate their home town and his collecting of anything and everything we would not have any basis on which to do much of our research. THank you Gerard and Derek Young.

Goodwood revs up to host circuit's PostSport first running festival this autumn THOUSANDS of runners are set to hare around the Goodwood motor track for a race with a difference.

Forget the revving engines and smoking tyres, the hallowed tarmac will host up to 5,000 athletes as the Chichester venue hosts its first Running Festival.

Taking place on Sunday, October 14, 2,000 spots are available for the half marathon, with a further 3,000 in the 10k.

An event aimed at younger runners will also be announced shortly, with organisers claiming it will be a celebratory day of running for runners of all ages and abilities.

THe race will not be the first for the Goodwood track - with Chichester Atheltics Club organising a succesful Midsummer 5k around the circuit every year.

Race director Joe Williams said: “It has been a long time in the planning and we are thrilled to be able to host our first running festival at such a beautiful and memorable venue.

"THe facilities at Goodwood are second-tonone and we hope that many runners will take the opportunity to race at one of the UK’s best-known estates.

"With the option of a 10k and a half

marathon, we are looking forward to welcoming runners of all abilities to the event in October.

"Discounted early bird entries are available so now is the perfect time to sign up and have a fantastic new event to look forward to.”

Early bird entries cost £18 (affiliated)/ £20 (non-affiliated) for the 10k, and £26 (affiliated)/ £28 (non-affiliated) for the half marathon. Prices will rise by £2 on March 1.

Last weekend's 13 miler was a big temperature swing for Grace and Derek Natoli, who ran in the Doha half marathon last weekend. Grace powered on to achieve a personal best half marathon time of 1 hour 58 minutes. Claire Baker was also in fine form as she took more than10 minutes off her previous best time to finish in 1:57.

Next up and continuing this trend was Neil Pacey with a PB of 1:53. First home for the club and also running a PB was Andy Mair, who crossed the line in 1:36.

DARTS: Rob Collins fired a 170 in-shot as THe Legends sank the QE2 in week 16 of the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League.

Swimming success for Bognor's squad

BOGNOR REGIS Swimming Club made quite a splash at the first competitive event of 2018.

THe squad have been training hard at their base in THe Arena sports centre.

Hopes were high ahead of the first contest of the season just down the road in Littlehampton for the Splash Meet.

THe squad did not disappoint - coming home with a range of medals from the competitive racing.

In total, the squad swam 65 times and recorded 44 personal bests - meaning twothirds of all swims were record breaking.

Coaches said within the swims there were seven county qualifying times.

Among the standout performers were Leo Mitchell, who won four silver medals, and Amber Macrae, who bagged a bronze.

Speaking after the event, Jan Malpas, of the swimming club, said: "What an excellent start to 2018!"

Bognor Regis Swimming Club offers

competitive swimming training run by qualified teachers and coaches.

THe club was founded in 1965, and since that time has continued to provide swimming coaching for novices through to national standard competitive swimmers.

During the week, the club runs training sessions that are split into different squads based on the ability of a swimmer.

Most start out in Starfish, which caters for those fresh out of swim school who can travel 50 metres and dive in the pool from the blocks.

It progresses through to Marlins, which is the youth squad where swimmers will usually be over 14.

THere is even space for older enthusiasts in the masters category, where the only necessity is being able to swim lengths.

Cup final awaits City as Chi use week off to focus on Vase

Battered Blues slip up again CHICHESTER RFC's hunt for a first win of 2018 will see them taken on familiar foes on familiar territory.

THe battered and bruised Blues squad has struggled in recent weeks as injuries have caught up with Scott Ashley's squad.

Last weekend's 26-12 defeat away at Cobham was Chi's third defeat in a row.

While the Blues remain fourth and competitive, they have now lost touch with the leaders in London Division One South. But, with plenty of pride still to pay for until the end of the season, Chi will hope to find that form again tomorrow against Gravesend at Oaklands Park (2pm).

Speaking after the Cobham match, club spokesman Roger Gould said: "With all their injuries, the Blues were up against it but they competed and a deserved losing bonus point was snatched from them in the last minute.

"Chi have now lost three consecutive games while Cobham have won their last four, including the scalps of London Cornish and Brighton."

Despite a bright start for Chi, it was the Surrey side who

were first to strike, heading into a 13-0 lead. In response, Chi pushed forward and, from a Nick Blount line-out catch, they drove and passed until big Joe Woods plunged over in typical style.

Winger Ben Robson then got in the action. Tom Hutchin sent an excellent high kick to the left wing, and Robson was there to jump, catch and cross for a well-worked try.

Cobham hit back and slotted home another penalty to make it 16-12 at the break.

In the second period, Chi were unable to break down a stubborn defence and were cruelly denied a losing bonus point when the hosts crossed for a score in the final moments.

Chi can take heart from the performances of 18-year-old back rower Tyrese Makasi and Scott Bentley, both of whom made bright Blues debuts. * Bognor RFC will be looking to keep up the pressure at the top of Hampshire One as they head to Fordingbridge tomorrow (2pm).

THe Purple and Greens will be keen to bounce back to winning ways after suffering an 18-10 reverse at Chipstead in the cup last weekend.

CHICHESTER City's quest for silverware rolls on as the Lillywhites continue fighting on all four fronts.

With three months of the season remaining, Miles Rutherford's side sit fourth in the SCFL Premier, primed for a promotion push as the season draws to an end.

But there remains other distractions for the Oaklands Park side - namely the FA Vase, where they have progressed to the last 16 of the national knockout competition for the first time. Cup competitions closer to home are also on the radar.

On Tuesday, two Scott Jones goals secured a 2-0 victory over Broadbridge Heath in the semi-final of RUR cup, setting up a final against local rivals Pagham. A quarter-final against league leaders Haywards Heath in the Peter Bentley Cup also beckons (Feb 6, 7.45pm).

But all eyes at Oaklands are on the Vase, which will take Chi on a 480-mile round trip to play 1874 Northwich next Saturday (Feb 3, 3pm). With a week off before their trip to Cheshire, Chi have time to regroup and plan how they are going to attack the final 12 weeks of the campaign.

But despite the Lions' progress, the chairman down played any talks over promotion from step five football.

Shea said: "THe target from my point of view was that we have to finish in the top half as that’s where we were last year.

"Richie and Tom may have their own targets in mind but, for me,, I just want to finish as high as possible "If that means winning the league, then fantastic."

In SCFL Division One, Selsey face a tough task as they head to league leaders Little Common tomorrow (3pm) for a match at THe Oval in Eastbourne.

THat will be followed up on Tuesday with a trip to Midhurst on Tuesday (7.45pm).

THe Blues lost ground on the teams around them last weekend as their match away at St Francis Rangers fell victim to the weather.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham will be looking to get their season back on track as they welcome Ferring to the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side have not won since late November and have slipped to fourth, six points behind league leaders Roffey.

In the same division, Bosham's unbeaten run continues as they welcome Rottingdean Village to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins beat Montpelier Villa last time out 3-1 thanks to goals from Bradley Miles, Alex Barnes and Graeme Dowden.

THat means Bosham have lost only once in their last nine matches.

College Ladies seal first win of season CHICHESTER College’s Female Football Academy were celebrating this week, after recording their first win of the season against Brighton-based BHASVIC. THey travelled to the Withdean Stadium on Wednesday with a point to prove, having been beaten at home earlier this season.

THanks to second half goals from Alex Collighan and Alice Walford, Chi made the trip back along the coast with a 2-1 victory in the bag.

Speaking after the match, manager Matt Wright,who also manages Chichester City Ladies, said: “It was great to see the girls playing the style of football we have been striving towards.

"Although the result is a great bonus, the

true success came from the girls playing the best football we have seen so far this season.

“Every player at the college is on a journey as an individual and as part of the team.

"So far, two of the college players have progressed into the first team squad at Chichester Ladies, this is far beyond anything we could have expected.” * Chichester City Ladies return to action this weekend, welcoming Gillingham to Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm) in the FA Women's Premier League South.

Last weekend's scheduled match against Swindon Town was called off at late notice by the opponents. It will be re-arranged for another time.

Pearce: Bognor's fortunes will not change with new manager Next Game

HUNGERFORD TOWN (A)

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes there's no quick fix to reverse the fortunes of the relegation-threatened Rocks.

In an era when the easy option for clubs higher up the football pyramid is to change the man at the top, the long-serving stalwart vowed to keep on calling the shots at Nyewood Lane.

It comes as Bognor suffered another home defeat last weekend, this time a 3-0 loss to tenman Wealdstone.

It means the Rocks, who have not won at home in the league since August, remain second bottom of National South.

THey travel to Hungerford Town tomorrow (3pm) in desperate need of three points if they are to drag themselves clear of the drop.

Pearce, who has been involved in the running of the club for nearly 50 years, said: "THe only way to change a bad run like this is by having a group of players in good spirits, who don’t fear failure and want to work hard.

"I don’t think anyone can say they are not trying. I have been here 48 years and they have been working as hard as any side I've had.

"We do need someone who's a good central striker but there's no escaping that this is a very difficult league" As if to highlight Bognor's predicament, Pearce said that Saturday's victors had a budget that was more than twice that of his own side.

While the Rocks have been looking in every corner of the country for a striker to lead the line, Wealdstone boasted a number nine who reportedly cost £17,000 when he moved to the west London side.

But Pearce said the search went on - as does the need to keep on building on a run of performances which have seen the Rocks dominate possession but not score the goals that perhaps their performances have deserved.

Pearce said: "We have to keep going and have faith in the players we have while looking to strengthen where we can. Whether it's with me as a manger or another one in charge, the problems with getting players will not change.

"It’s always been a problem to find not only the quality but also those available with the budget that we have and the location that we are in."

THe Rocks will make the trip to Berkshire with a number of key players still missing.

Ollie Pearce, James Crane, Corey Heath, Chad Field and Keaton Wood remain on the treatment table while Ben Swallow and young French midfielder Richard Gilot were suspended for the Wealdstone match.

Hungerford sit 14th in the 22-team division and are in good form, winning three of their past four in the league. Former Reading striker Nick Bignall is a threat while Louie Soares keeps Town's midfield ticking.

Rocks' faithful give Crane lift LONG-SERVING Rocks defender James Crane has said he has been shocked and overwhelmed by the generosity of Bognor fans after they dug deep to fund a shoulder operation.

THe left-sided defender has been out of action since he fell awkwardly in the 2-2 draw against Gloucester City in September.

After being told he would have to wait for the summer to have the operation, the Rocks supporters club led a fundraising charge.

THanks to donations collected at Saturday's match against Wealdstone, more than £1,800 was collected in less than a week towards the £4,200 surgery.

It means Crane, who's been with the club for the last nine seasons, can get the operation done in the coming weeks, meaning he could be fit by the end of the campaign.

Crane, who writes a fortnightly column for the Post, said: "I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the fans. It shows what a great club we have got and the loyalty is amazing.

"It means everything and sums up why I have stayed at the club for so long. THe fans are integral to the whole club. I can't wait to get back on the pitch and repay the fans by contributing to keeping us in the league."

THE PAST two weeks have seen two contrasting defeats for the club.

Even though we lost the Leyton Orient game there were a lot of positives to take from it.

THe way we got back into it with ten men was a real boost, particularly when you think of how it was done through that goal by Jimmy Muitt.

It was one of the best goals I have seen. After that high, to go into extra time and then lose was difficult to take but, on the whole, it was a performance to be proud of, the type of performance we have not shown for a while.

After that high in front of a good crowd against National League opponents everyone was looking forward to the next fixture.

Unfortunately, things did not go to plan against Wealdstone.

With that first goal you can't help but feel sorry for Scutty who with that header must have had a momentary lapse of concentration. THen, in the second half, their second goal was soft and the third was against the run of play.

A lot of people looking at the result on paper would think that we simply fell by the wayside. But we had good chances and gave them two goals.

On reflection, we were far better than them. While they are doing OK in the league they are not the best team we will play so that does give us hope moving forward.

In terms of Scutty, like I said, I did feel for him after that header went in.

It's hard when things like that happen for a young player breaking into the team.

During and directly after the match, you could see the moment was still quite raw and was quite emotional. So at that point all you can do is take him to one side and say 'keep your head up'.

By the time the end of week came though, a couple of lads were taking the mickey out him all in good jest.

No one was blaming him and away from the group, a couple of us, like Sami or I, will have a quiet chat with and ask him to make up for it in another match. It's not his fault that we lost the game. He's a strong character and he will be back stronger, no doubt.

As for the mood in the rest of the camp, everyone is aware of the position we're in and how the task is becoming more difficult as the weeks go on.

No one is under any illusions - everyone is well aware that we need to roll up our sleeves up and be counted.

Going into tomorrow's match with Hungerford, we know that we are capable of beating everyone in this league.

THe whole squad knows that we need to start coming away from games like this with points -and at this stage of the season it needs to be three rather than one. THey are a good side at home and we need to make sure the 14 who turn up do what they can.

We just need to look at that one match, focus on going there and getting something from that match.

It is purely about who we have for next 90 minutes, then it's on to the next one.

Personally, I couldn't care less about other teams around us as we fight for survival.

We need to concentrate on ourselves.

THe hardest thing for me is coming to games, sitting on the terraces knowing I could be out there helping the team that is the hardest thing in the world.

We have a young squad and I can see how beneficial it has been for everyone playing at this level.

I played at this level when I was 18 and know how playing in such a tough unforgiving league can be good to bring players on.

But the immediate future for the club is all about staying in the league. THat's what we need to focus on.
