Town centre security plan BUSINESSES in Bognor Regis will benefit from extra security this year.

THe first priority of the Business Improvement District board which is being set up is to take action to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in the trading area.

THe BID is set to take effect in two months. Commercial organisations within the district – which stretches from Butlin’s and the University of Chichester to the Royal Norfolk Hotel – will soon receive their first bills for their levy to pay for the initiative.

BID manager Toyubur Rahman wrote to businesses in the improvement district yesterday to keep them up to date with what has been happening.

“I will be holding a meeting in late February to let everybody know the latest situation and to introduce the directors of the new BID board.

“I will be telling people how to get involved and if, someone wants to be a director, how to do it," he said.

“I will also be outlining the priorities.

THe first priority will be to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.”

THe best way of achieving that goal with a slice of the £700,000 funding which will be generated by the levy for the five years of the BID is to be discussed by the board.

“We could hire a contractor to do the work for us or employ security guards from an agency – or we could hire the individuals ourselves.

“THat would allow us to have a bit more control over them and that could enable

them to get involved in other activities as well,” said Mr Rahman.

“THere are pros and cons to doing that and the board needs to discuss them and make the decision.”

It was likely to be May or June before the directors were able to find out how much of the levy they would receive in the first tranche of cash when it is transferred from the billing authority of Arun District Council.

Mr Rahman said: “THat means it is likely to be towards the end of the year before the security measures take effect.

Ideally, I would like them in place this summer but, realistically, I expect it will be after that but before this Christmas.”

Other priorities on the BID’s programme are to create a more welcoming town centre, enable better parking and improving the image of Bognor Regis.

THe improvement district was approved by 143 of the 179 votes cast last June.

THere are 293 commercial properties in the area which will have a 1.5 per cent levy on their business rates over £6,000 to pay for the chosen schemes.

THe initial seven-strong board of directors for the BID is composed of representatives of businesses in the area.

THey include national retailers Boots and Wilko, as well as local concerns like Reynolds and THe William Hardwicke.

THe creation of the BID will come four years after Mr Rahman was appointed by a consortium of the University of Chichester, Butlin’s and Arun and Turn to page five

Electors invited to meet candidates A QUESTION time session will enable Bognor Regis electors to find out more about their candidates.

THe town's civic society has arranged the event to mark the three byelections which are taking place later this month.

Two of the polls are to fill vacancies on Bognor Regis Town Council - in Marine and Hatherleigh wards.

THe third will elect a member of Arun District Council in Marine ward.

Voting in all the by-elections is taking place from 7am-10pm on February 22.

THe civic society's deputy chairman, Hugh Coster, said it believed a public meeting was needed to allow residents of those areas the chance to question candidates who were seeking to represent them.

Seven hopefuls have been nominated to fill the three available seats.

"THis multiple elexction is potentially very confusing for electors," said Mr Coster, "and we wish to help the public understand who is standing for what, and what the views and attitudes of the various councillors are.

"Most particularly, many people will want to know how the candidates will approach the task of representing them, what their aspirations are for the town, and whether they have the knowledge and ability to do the job."

THe meeting will take place at 7pm next Tuesday in the Regis Centre, in

Belmont Street, and entry is free.

All the election hopefuls have been invited to attend. Some are attempting to win a seat on both councils.

Mr Coster said: "THere will be lots of opportunities for public questions and we have no doubt that some of the important issues recently highlighted in the local press will come up.

"It should be a very interesting and useful meeting and everybody is invited, whether a ward elector or not."

Four candidates have come forward to become one of the district councillors for Marine ward.

THey are: Kate Eccles (Conservative), Steve Goodheart (Independent), Alison Sharples (Labour) and Matt Stanley (Liberal Democrats.

For the town councillor vacancy in Marine ward, there are three candidates: Kate Eccles (Conservative), Alison Sharples (Labour) and Matt Stanley (Liberal Democrats).

THe town council's Hatherleigh ward has also attracted three candidates: Damien Enticott (Labour), Chris Hartley (Conservative) and Francis Oppler (Liberal Democrats).

THe vacancies in Hotham ward were caused by the death of former councillor Dougal Maconachie last December.

THe Hatherleigh ward vacancy arose from the resignation for personal reasons of Dan Barnes.

BEER lovers could soon have a micropub to enjoy in Bognor Regis.

Darren Judd has put forward plans to open the business by changing the use of 71 High Street from a shop.

THis is a change from his originally advertised proposal for a microbrewery. His planning agent, Leeza Aldis-Hobbs, says in a statement: "THere will be no brewing at the premises. All beers sold will be sourced from local micro breweries.

"THere will be a maximum of two deliveries per week between the times of 10am and 4pm."

Students take to the stage to help theatre

Naomi's uni offer f The cast of Nunsense DRAMA students are getting into the habit of raising money for the theatre in Bognor Regis.

Members of the musical theatre and arts development degree course are swapping their lecture rooms for the stage with their hilarious show in aid of the Arun Art's charity's Regis Centre.

THey will be staging Nunsense: The Megamusical in the centre's Alexandra THeatre from February 22-24.

It is one of the ways they hope to raise £24,000 by next March in their Raise your Voice campaign to fund a range of improvements to the community venue.

One will be to upgrade its sound system.

Donna Day Lafferty, who leads the degree programme, said: "Last year, the students raised £9,276 to help meet the cost of repairing the theatre roof. We're really proud of them.

"THis is a pioneering degree programme that teaches young performers how to produce amazing musicals and, ultimately, how to raise the money needed to bring great art to local communities."

Students have picked a fitting show to showcase their money-raising activities.

Nunsense follows a group of nuns whose order is suddenly depleted when 52 members die suddenly.

Baking cakes and selling cards raises enough money to bury 48 of them but, with four bodies still in the cook's freezer, they are frantically left trying to raise funds for their sisters' funerals by putting on their own musical spectacular before the health inspector finds out.

THe result is a night of endless hilarity as the fun unfolds. Ionie Shaw, 19, who plays Sister Wilhelm, the convent nurse,

said: I'm really enjoying rehearsals.

"Nunsense is such a feel-good musical.

THis is a really fun way to raise money for a charity we care about.

"THe Regis Centre is home to so many university shows it feels right that we should be supporting them."

Ionie also doubles at the show's social media director, its sponsor a seat executive and all-round fundraiser.

THe show takes place at 7.30pm on all days and 2.30pm on the final day.

A-LEVEL student Naomi Carr-Austin is on the fast track for university.

Talented Naomi has impressed academics at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama so much they have already offered her a place.

She will start her studies at the prestigious London academic centre this autumn after she wowed lecturers with her passion for drama and theatre, her knowledge and her experience of running a drama club at THe Regis School this year alongside sixth formers in the year below, and her extensive research project into the role of theatre in society.

Jolie Lelliott, the school's head of performing arts, said: "THe performing arts department at the school are extremely proud of Naomi for this fantastic achievement.

"We cannot wait to hear all about the fantastic opportunities that she will have in September as part of the course and beyond."

Year 13 student Naomi has achieved her university place by being one of four current sixth-formers at THe Regis School who chose to take up its extended project qualification by adding to their studies to complete a lengthy project in two months.

THey received their results last month. For Naomi, the A grade she achieved secured her a much soughtafter place to study BA drama, applied theatre and education at Central one of the top two most well-known drama schools in London, alongside RADA. She had already been through a rigorous application and interview process and been offered a place before the university reduced the offer because of her excellent extended project result.

THe other students who completed the qualification as a fast track course were: Hayden Crisp (B), Jasmine Small (B) and Rutysara Alves (C).

Assistant principal Victoria Walker said: "All students had to work extremely hard to complete the project and presentation in a short period of time and they should be really proud of their achievements.

"THis is a demanding course.

THe research papers which are written by the students are marked beyond A2 level and students need to be motivated and disciplined to complete their projects independently.

"THese students have set a fine example of what can be achieved if you go the extra mile."

` Police criticism MORE police are needed in the Arun district, councillors have said.

Cllr Dr James Walsh said the 7.8 per cent increase in the share of council tax about to be taken by Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne would fail to lead to a single extra officer.

"It was clear from Katy Bourne the other night that her focus is not going to move to local policing. We are not going to see an extra police officer or a police community support officer in our towns and villages," he said at Wednesday's meeting of the council's overview select committee.

"I have said it before - at any one time there's an average of 14-16 mobile police response officers for all of the Arun district and the Chichester district. THat's half of West Sussex geographically. Nobody can convince me that is anywhere near enough, even if they have fast cars, to cover all of those two districts."

Cllr Dr Walsh (LD, Beach) was among the councillors who criticised Mrs Bourne when she attended a special meeting of Arun District Council's overview select committee last week.

He called on Cllr Mike Clayden, Arun's cabinet member for community wellbeing, to reinforce the call for more officers to be deployed in the district's communities in his role on the Sussex Police and Crime Panel.

Cllr Robert Wheal (C, Arundel) said: "THe police are getting this extra money. Where is this £12 per household going?"

Cllr Colin Oliver-Redgate (C, Ferring) said the police were under pressure to meet government targets.

Progress in Arcade work RAPID progress is being made in filling a prime retail site in Bognor Regis.

Councillors were told this week that THe Arcade in the town centre was set to become a worthwhile investment for Arun District Council.

Alan Peach, the council’s group head of corporate support, said: “THe budgeted rate of return…for the investment is nine per cent for 2018/19.

“THe Arcade is starting to show a reasonable return. THis will only be increased as we get more of the units occupied. We are filling up the units relatively quickly. It used to be run by a pension fund some distance away.

"THe council is being quite active in getting different tenancies, short leases, in place. I think this rate of return is reasonable in the next 12 months.”

As reported, Arun bought THe Arcade in the High Street last October.

It was the first acquisition in the council’s property investment strategy to provide future income from rents and to help to regenerate the town centre.

At the time, the 20-plus retail units in THe Arcade contained about a third of the empty shops in the town centre.

Mr Peach reported to the council’s overview select committee on Wednesday the total cost of the purchase was £1.92m.

On top of this, about £50,000 is being spent to bring the vacant units to a lettable standard.

“THese are temporary costs because there are repairs in order to attract businesses to the shops and we need to

put in electricity and toilets as well.”

THe income from the site of £180,000 a year was among features of the proposed budget for 2018/19 Mr Peach detailed for the first time at the meeting.

THe committee recommended the budget with its £5.13 – or 2.99 per cent – increase in an average band D payment for the year from April. THis will push Arun’s share of the total bill up to £176.40.

It will go on to be debated by the council’s cabinet on February 12 and all councillors on February 21 before it is finally agreed.

Mr Peach said the £24.2m budget would be balanced. THe council would also have the comfort of £8m in balances.

Among the intended spending was £2.1m for self-contained homes for temporary accommodation for homeless people to reduce the council’s reliance on costly B&Bs. In addition, the council had upped its expected spending because of the rising number of homeless people to £704,000 from the current £533,000.

“THe Homelessness Reduction Act is really causing a huge increase in our expenditure and it’s putting more and more people in B&Bs," he said.

Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Beach) said: “I am very pleased to see the investment in homelessness and making sure sure we have got more proper accommodation rather than B&Bs." But he warned the council’s intention to build 25 homes a year for permanent occupation would make little difference to the backlog for social housing.

Poppy cooks up winner for first place in contest for young chefs A BOGNOR REGIS student proved she could handle the heat of the kitchen with a competition win.

Poppy Wallis, who is a Year 8 pupil at THe Regis School, won top prize in the first heat of this year's Young Chef Competition, sponsored by Bognor Regis Rotary Club.

A school spokesman said: "THis is an extremely competitive event.

"THe students were competing with Chichester Free School and had to plan and cook two dishes in 90 minutes.

"THe standard of food was exceptional and our students coped well under pressure.

"THey were a credit not only for their

focus throughout the competition but also were really kind and welcoming to our guests."

Poppy had to show her skills to meet a range of criteria.

THey included planning, neatness of working area and hygiene, variety of skills used and taste and presentation of the two courses.

THe competition includes district finals and regional finals which will lead to the national final in April.

THe school's other students who took part were: Year 10 - Lexie Diston, Finnley Western and Mutaharra Ahmed; Year 9 - Mae Pinnock Quirk; and Year 8 - Finlay Clarke.

Homes' site flooding worry

AERIAL photos for Pagham housing campaigners show the extent of flooding on the proposed sites.

THe Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement arranged for the views to be taken after a period of light to moderate rainfall. THey said they showed the unsuitability of the locations for the large-scale housing development which has been proposed for them.

Albert Homer, one of PAGAM's founders, said: "Local knowledge indicates that much more severe flooding occurs after more prolonged or heavier rainfall."

THe sites seen from the air were Hook Lane, where 300 homes are intended, Sefter Road, 250 homes, and Pagham Road, 400 homes. THe photos were taken late last month.

PAGAM was among those who put forward arguments against the housing to the planning inspector at the examination into Arun's local plan last autumn. THe inspector, Mark Dakeyne, has issued his preliminary findings.

THe district council has compiled its main modifications to his comments.

Consulation about the changes only is being carried out by Arun until 5pm on February 23.

PAGAM is set to comment about the modifications. Mr Homer said: "THere are many reasons, apart from flooding, why building houses in these fields is such a poor idea.

"Local residents in the main are wholly against what has been proposed for these fields. However, there is a

reasonable alternative to these strategic sites which would obviate the need to build on Pagham's fields and that is at Ford.

"Although 1,500 houses have been allocated to this site, I believe that it could easily be expanded to accommodate a further 1,000 houses and there are many advantages to expanding this site."

THese included better transport links, easier drainage solutions, the lack of a nearby nature reserve and an established wastewater facility, he added.

f Flooding at Hook Lane

POLICE have pledged to follow any leads in the continued search for a missing Barnham woman.

Helen Slaughter has not been seen for three months in spite of several appeals for help from her husband, Ken Slaughter, and Sussex Police.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday there was nothing new to report about its continued efforts to find Mrs Slaughter.

"Any line of enquiry will be investigated," she said.

Mother-of-three Mrs Slaughter, 48, left her home for work as usual on November 1.

She has not been seen since, in spite of searches in the area around her home.

Siblings' special night BROTHER and sister Nigel and Nicola Fitzsimmons have put their heart into holding a Valentine's charity night.

THe siblings have arranged the event for February 10 in aid of the National Autistic Society (NAS).

THe cause is close to the hearts of both the local residents, Nigel said: "We're so excited about this night and a lot of hard work has gone into making things happen.

"We have a glass of fizz (or soft drink) on arrival, buffet nibbles, a raffle with some amazing prizes and music throughout the night. People are encouraged to bring drinks for their own tables, so there's no expensive bar when you're there.

"We can also now reveal that classic rock band Hot'n'Sticky are playing for us, with covers from Queen, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Journey, Metallica and more.

"From the soft to the heavy, and from the 70s to the 90s, it's going to be amazing."

THe evening will take place from 7pm-10.30pm at THe Rowland Rank Centre in Aldwick Road.

It is one of several fundraising events Nigel and Nicola are using to support the society.

THey have a February 18 quiz night at THe Lion in Pagham and are training for the London Marathon on April 22.

Nicola said: "We'll stop at nothing to support the cause we are so passionate about. Within a year, we will have completed the Bognor Prom 10k first, followed by our first half marathon in Bournemouth in October last year.

"Running as part of #TeamAutism, we'll take on the iconic London Marathon on April 22. We want to raise as much money as possible for the NAS to help them continue their excellent work and research in the world of autism - a subject close to our hearts for very personal reasons."

Nicola and Nigel have been backed by Southern Co-operative Funeralcare in Rose Green. Its branch co-ordinators, Shirley Heaton and Lindsey Booker, willingly agreed to back them.

Shirley said: "THey are such lovely people and we can see the hard work they are putting in."

Trailers ban at waste site TRAILERS are to be banned from the waste site in Bognor Regis.

West Sussex County Council is set to bring in the ban this summer.

Visitors to the household waste recycling site off Shripney Road will be turned back if they go along with any trailers, including those with a single axle, Luton vans and horseboxes.

THe town is one of two in the county with Littlehampton - to have the blanket ban imposed. All the other sites will still be able to accept single axle trailers.

A permit scheme for vans, pick-ups and trailers will also be started across the county.

THe move was backed by the county council's environment, communities and fire select committee on Wednesday.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Bognor Regis E) warned the change would be difficult for staff at the site to implement.

"In regard to the Bognor site, it's right in the heart of my division, so I have a special interest," he told the committee.

"Bognor is quite a unique site for a number of reasons. It's got anarrowing entrance which goes up, it's a shared use with businesses within the little commercial park and then, as you actually go in, it's incredibly narrow.

"You go up a slope, come through and it's basically one-way traffic.

"On a busy Sunday afternoon, the security man might only come across a trailer when it's too late.

"You can't reverse. All you can do is to go forward. So, I can see situations where there is going to be all sorts of conflicts and problems with the trailers which

aren't allowed to use the site.

"I recognise there are problems there.

You are going to have terrible problems with the staff actually removing these vehicles.

"You will then have very serious conflict that could arise. I just feel that it was a fantastic service, paid for by residents.

"We all contributed to it. It's something that wasn't broken and now is."

THe latest changes were part of the aftershocks from the huge alternations to the waste sites of the past two years, said Cllr Oppler.

County director of waste, energy and environment Steve Read said at the committee the ban on all trailers was needed because of health and safety and welfare concerns of customers and staff.

A health and safety officer's report on the Bognor Regis site stated: "Being a very restricted site in terms of manoeuvring space, trailers increase the risk of an incident and the ability of drivers to control the reversing operation is not always acceptable."

Statistics given to the committee showed eight near miss reports at the site between last October 28 and December 12 which involved trailers.

THe permits were needed to stop residents from other counties using West Sussex sites to get rid of their waste, said Mr Read. No changes would be made until after the spring peak by early May. "Any time after that, we will move to implement this as quickly as possible.

Of course, we will also signpost residents at those affected sites where they can go with trailers. It is not too far away."

Grant schemes to help town businesses to be successful TWO NEW grant schemes for small businesses and retailers across Bognor Regis are to be launched.

Arun District Council is to introduce the initiatives to boost companies in the area. One is LEAP (Local Enterprise & Apprenticeship Platform) funding of up to £2,000 to help small businesses in the district to grow.

Available from next month, the scheme also provides apprenticeship grants of £1,500 to private and voluntary organisations in Arun with fewer then 250 employees to fund an apprentice. Applications for both types of LEAP grant can be made now

An Arun spokeswoman said: "THe council also has funds available under the Better Retailing Scheme, which helps retailers to learn how to boost their business. THis can be through seminars, workshops or even one-toone coaching."

Another way of boosting trade of small businesses is by networking.

Business Network Bognor Regis was set up by the council 18 months ago.

Its 25 businesses meet weekly and passed on more than £500,000 of trade between themselves in its first year.

MOVING the information for tourists in Bognor Regis has been criticised.

Arun District Council is shifting its visitor information point from its council-owned location of several decades to the foyer of the Alexandra THeatre, on the opposite side of the Place St Maur. But the move has been criticised by one of the town's councillors.

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: "What I am concerned about, is that this policy has been agreed internally in Arun without any discussion or consultation with its members about this move.

"It is a winding down of the tourism service because we have gone from having a fully-staffed visitor information centre a few years ago to a facility run by volunteers in another building."

But he said the most recent information service had been limited because of a lack of weekend opening.

"THe new service will provide extra hours and it has to be a positive move for visitors in that sense," he said

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said he also welcomed the additional opening.

"It could be very good for the town's visitors and for the Regis Centre. THere is plenty of room in the foyer and combining the visitor information and the centre should benefit both. Many people still want a face-to-face service rather than using a computer. THe previous service was always a compromise because it was not open at weekends," he said.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "THe council is delighted to be working in partnership with Arun Arts (which runs the Regis Centre) to ensure that this important public service continues to be provided in the town.

"THe opening hours of the information point are set to reflect the same opening hours as the theatre, which means facilities will be available to the public for more hours, particularly at weekends."

THe previous visitor information point closed on Wednesday.

` Extra bedrooms PLANS for extra bedrooms and bathrooms have been approved for a set of Bognor Regis flats.

Arun District Council has backed proposals by Regent Property Holdings to add the rooms to its previously approved scheme.

THis will see the flats created from the first and second floor offices at 2-10 Queensway.

THe latest scheme will add a further two bedrooms and two bathrooms on a fifth floor.

Council planning officer Richard Temple says in his report: "THe proposed development is considered acceptable because the form of the extensions would reflect and harmonise the character of the approved scheme and existing building, with flat roof, basic design and materials to match the existing approved.

"It is not considered that the development would have a significant impact on the nearby conservation area, listed building or buildings of special character as, overall, the additional and fifth floor would not add significant scale to the approved development."

` Vehicle crimes A VAN parked in Ashbee Gardens, North Bersted, was raided overnight on January 23 and tools were stolen.

An attempted break-in was made to a vehicle parked in Bronze Close, also in North Bersted, and the lock was tampered with but no entry was gained.

Scotland comes to home residents A TASTE of Scotland was brought to a Bognor Regis care home for Burns Night.

THe global event brings people together to celebate the life and work of Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns.

Staff at Aldwick House care home decorated it with tartan to celebrate the special occasion on January 25.

Residents also made Scottish flags.

THeir residents, family and friends joined together to listen to the most famous poems written by Burns including the Address to a Haggis before tucking into a Burn's Supper.

Residents were treated to a feast which included the traditional Scottish meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, washed down by a wee dram of whisky.

Donna Giles, activities co-ordinator at the care home in Nyewood Lane, said: "We really enjoyed celebrating Burns Night with our residents.

"It was great to see them tucking into the haggis. Some of the residents loved it, but some definitely wanted to stick to sausages instead.

"THe day brought back some wonderful memories for some of our residents, who had either visited Scotland or had lived there before.

"It was great to hear their stories and learn more about their lives.

"THese kind of events bring so much fun to our care home and we are very much looking forward to next year."

Aldwick House is part of the national New Century Care group.

Pair's charity head shave TWO HEADS are better than one for a Bognor Regis charity fundraiser.

Ally Dodd is being joined in her headshave for Prostate Cancer UK by the landlady of her local pub, Donna Chater.

Ally, 51, was inspired to sacrifice her 8ins long locks by her husband's fight against the cancer. She said: "I got re-married, to Chris, two years ago and just before our first anniversary he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fortunately, his treatment has been successful but I would like to say thank you for the help we received at St Richard's and the Royal Surrey hospitals."

She mentioned her idea to Donna and she readily agreed to join in the fun at the Victoria Inn, in Charlwood Street, at

7pm on February 17 and there will be fundraising items available on the night.

THe shave is being carried out by nearby Ravello Hairdressers, of Aldwick Road.

MoD senior facilities manager Alley is donating her ponytail to the Little Princess Trust for a wig for a seriously ill girl.

Donna's enthusiasm for the idea has led her to become a Men's United pub for Prostate Cancer UK for more further fundraising and information events.

"Chris only found out about his cancer when he signed up for a check-up when he joined our surgery," added Ally, "and we want to let more people know about it."

Sunday success for Bognor Regis junior parkrun on its first birthday A BUMPER birthday turnout celebrated the first year of Bognor Regis junior parkrun.

THe 64-strong field on Sunday was one of the largest fields since the runs began.

THe grey and overcast early morning sky was in contrast to smiles and laughter among the young runners and their parents and volunteers around the start and finish line at THue Arena sports centre.

THe anniversary run was won by Jessica Smith, 12, in 8min 44sec. She held off a close challenge from Emily Carman to cross the finishing line just two seconds in front.

St Philip Howard Catholic High School, Barnham, pupil Jessica said: “I’ve been coming to the junior parkruns since the beginning, though I have missed a few because I also play football. It’s all about setting a best time and challenging other people to get their best times, too.

“It was a tough run today. THe ground was quite muddy, which made it difficult to a get a grip in places.”

But Jessica’s success was not enough to eclipse her previous best of 8:16sec she set several weeks ago.

“I just can’t beat it,” she said. “I’m averaging 8:37 but it builds up my fitness levels when I come here. As well as football, I run cross-country for my school."

THe first boy home was Isaac Siddle, nine, who goes to Rose Green Junior School, in 9:49 for sixth place overall. Caleb Slingo was the second boy home in 9:54.

Isaac said: “It was tough today because I haven’t come here for a few weeks.

“I’ve taken part in a lot of these runs.

It’s quite fun and I like it when it’s quite muddy. I’ve come first once before and I’ve come second a couple of times.

“THis wakes me up and makes extra room for my roast dinner on Sundays. My personal best is 9:08.”

THe first year of junior parkruns has attracted 512 runners. THe weekly turnouts have averaged 55 and the biggest turnout is 113.

Most come from Bognor Regis but a few have gone along while they were on holiday in the town with their families.

THey were started for 4-14-year-olds

by Karen Vilday, Ben Bowers and Mike Houston in January, 2017, after the success of the adult parkruns in Hotham Park at 9am on Saturdays.

Event director Karen said: “I started taking part in the Hotham Park parkrun and I’ve got two young children. I spoke to Ben, who was involved in setting it up, and said we should do something like it for the kids. I took my kids to the junior parkrun in Waterlooville. THey just loved it and I thought it was just what this area needed.

“THe Arena offered us the use of their site and the event has grown from there.

“We’ve only had to cancel a couple of weeks because of bad weather. It’s really worthwhile staging the events.

“I’m really pleased with today. It’s a good turnout and you’ve only got to see the children’s faces when they cross the line to know it’s a good thing to be involved with.”

Sunday’s race director was Terri Sansom, who arranged the roles among the some

25 volunteers who are needed to ensure everything goes smoothly.

THe first arrive at 8am - an hour before the children set off – to mark out the 2km course from the start behind the allweather sports surfaces to the playing fields and back.

“You have just got to look at the kids.

THey are laughing, smiling and having fun,” said Terri. “THe adults are the same as well. THe atmosphere of the community coming together is amazing. It’s one of those priceless things.

“Running the event has got a lot easier now because more parents are involved.

It’s essential we have the volunteers.

Without them, we would not be able to hold the junior parkruns."”

THe nearest junior parkrun is at Chichester and there are 198 in the UK. One of those who help out each week is Emily John, 14. Her role on Sunday was to scan the barcode of every finisher. THis is one of several roles at the finishing line to ensure each child’s run is recorded accurately.

Emily, a Portsmouth High School for Girls pupil, started last September as part of her community work for the bronze award of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and she has carried on.

“It’s like a community here. It’s so much fun getting to see young people being active. THey don’t have to pay, either. It’s important it’s open to everyone, no matter the background,” she said.

` Cinema progress PROGRESS is being made on the new cinema screen in Bognor Regis.

THe town council's contractors have been completed the roof structure for the extension to the Picturedrome. A perimeter scaffold has also been installed and waterproof coverings have begun to be laid.

THis work on the near £1m project has come after some 60 tonnes of concrete was put in place to form the ground floor slab and the first floor was formed with a metal deck system with mesh reinforcement.

THe new screen will have 110 seats and should open for this year's school summer holidays.

` Parking ban plan DOUBLE yellow lines are planned for a Bognor Regis road.

West Sussex County Council intends to paint the lines in Hook Lane in the town.

It wants to bring in the parking ban on the road's north side from its junction with Northcliffe Road eastwards to the eastern end of the road and all sides of the turning area at the eastern end.

Consultation about the scheme lasts until February 15.

` Freezer raided FOOD was stolen from a freezer after a garage in Felpham was broken into.

THe burglary at the Norman Drive property took place from 5am5.30am on January 24.

Charity doing capital work OPENING doors to mental wellbeing has been the aim of a Bognor Regis charity for two decades.

THe CAPITAL Project Trust works in the community and in hospitals to offer help for those who have experienced mental distress. It offers training and mutual peer support each year to more than 300 people who live in the community and 1,000-plus hospital inpatients.

Chief executive Clare Ockwell knows the value of its work. She said: “I was written off by various services and my husband says that I would probably be dead without CAPITAL Project Trust – and he is probably right.

“A number of our members say exactly the same thing if they were not involved with us. It’s all about knowing you are supported by everyone else in the room when you are at one of our events.

“Not everyone will have exactly the same experience but they will know what it feels like to go through the system.

“THey can express feelings which other people might shy away from and they know they are in a completely safe environment where everyone has been in the same boat.”

Mrs Ockwell is one of three founder members still involved with the charity. It was formed in 1997 as a small project by a worker in social services.

She wanted to ensure people who had been a patient of mental health services had the chance to train professionals about how they could improve their relationship with patients in a similar situation.

THe scheme was called Users And Trainers – and proved to be a success even if the name was scrapped after just three months. THe current title, which stands for Clients And Professionals In Training

and Learning, was adopted. A former civil servant was taken on as an administrator.

THat year-long contract set up the organisation and it became apparent many of the people involved had a range of skills to enable the new organisation to become established.

Bognor Regis resident Mrs Ockwell, 59, has been its chief executive for the past six years. She oversees 21 mainly part-time staff who lead a host of activities at the charity in Sudley Road. THese include art, creative writing and photography groups.

THe training of mental health care professionals continues and a mental health worker from the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust visits CAPITAL’s premises in Sudley Road every week to run various groups and provide one-to-one support.

THe trust also employs support workers in psychiatric hospitals to help inpatients.

“THat’s an amazing service. It makes such a difference,” she said. “When you go into a psychiatric hospital for the first time, it is a huge culture shock.

“Staff on the wards are very busy and it’s hard to get time with them. Our workers offer peer support and are available for the patients to talk to. THey can build up a rapport. “THe feedback we get from that service from the users and the other staff on the wards is great.”

THe past 20 years has seen more openness about mental health matters but Mrs Ockwell said she believed a lot more still needed to be done. And the need for the services shows no sign of declining.

“I’ve noticed we have a lot more younger members,” she added. “I think a lot of that is to do with work. So many jobs seem to be for a few hours a week or for short-term jobs. It can seem they are expected to live at home and be supported by their family."

Folk festival to be bigger TOP NAMES will make this year's Southdowns Folk Festival in Bognor Regis the biggest yet.

THe Steve Harley Acoustic Trio will be headlining one of the event's main concerts. THey will be joined on the bill of the September event by awardwinning duo, O'Hooley &Tidow, and one of Ireland's most iconic bands, Dervish.

Festival organiser Roger Nash said: "Planning and preparations are well under way for this year's highly popular folk festival, which will see a lot more exciting and community-focused town centre activities with a bigger and more spectacular dance programme, expanded street markets, music workshops and much more.

"To cap it all, the festival headliners and superb support acts are the best yet."

"We are proud to have secured the services of the superb Steve Harley Acoustic Trio.

"Steve is one of the most recognisable names in the music world and his fantastic hits with Cockney Rebel are legendary."

A new feature of the festival will be the Southdowns Ukulele Festival and the Seaside Big Sing.

THis year's festival will be the sixth. It will take place between September 20 and 23. Activities will be centered on the town centre and the Regis Centre.

Giving the occasion a kick-start will be the wonderful band TRADarr in the Alexandra THeatre and supported by the

up and coming folk trio, Kadia.

Friday evening sees a sumptuous double-header with the welcome return of the brilliant and award-winning duo, O'Hallow and Tidow. THey will be followed by a band wowing audiences wherever they play, the excellent and breathtaking Merryhell.

THe Steve Harley Acoustic Trio will be on stage on the evening of September 22, with support from the new and talened Ed Goodale Band.

"Finally, Sunday evening sees a second longed-for return of one of Ireland's most iconic bands, Dervish, supported by the hugely entertaining Gerry Colvin Band."

A lengthy line-up of other great performers - such as Flossie Malavialle and Bath Folk Youth Band, Fred's House, THe Rude Mechanicals and Laughing Gravy will also provide plenty of toetapping sounds during the four days.

Other venues will include THe Alex, THe William Hardwicke and THe Hothampton Arms.

THere will also be plenty of other fun to be had by all ages.

Music workshops, children's fun and games, the Sussex Young Folk Competition and expanded street markets will add to the weekend's attractions.

SUFFERERS of two painful conditions have been invited to meetings of its support group for the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas.

THe PMRGCuk group exists for those who have polymalgia and giant cell arteritis. THese autoimmune ailments cause painful muscles in the former and can lead to loss of sight in the latter.

Patricia Dawson, of the group, said: "THey are controlled by longterm oral steroids but there is no cure and it is just a matter of waiting for them to burn themselves out.

"THe side-effects of taking steroids can cause weight gain, depression, type two diabetes, thinning skin and brain fog."

THe group meets from 10.15am11.30am on the second Wednesday each month at Manor Nurseries in Runcton, and discusses a topic of the month.

` Read Aloud group ADULTS who want to relax, listen, read and chat are invited to Willowhale Library's new activity.

THe Read Aloud group is being launched at the library on February 26.

It will meet from 10.30am-midday every fortnight afterwards.

A library spokesman said: "Attendees will take it in turns to read a short passage from a novel, short story or a poem.

"However, anyone who would prefer not to read is welcome to attend and listen instead."

THe sessions are free but a small donation is requested for any refreshments. THose unable to attend the first meeting can join at the next one.

Memorial for David Purley A MEMORIAL has been created to help the people of Bognor Regis remember a legendary racing driver.

THe celebration at the commemorative statue for David Purley, located at the Rolls Royce distribution centre in Shripney, was held on Friday, on what would have been his 73rd birthday.

` Uni's health award RESEARCH to help solve the shortage of skilled health and social care workers is to be carried out by the University of Chichester.

THe university has been awarded £200,000 by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to lead the collaborative project.

Up to 1.6m workers will be needed by 2022 to replace those leaving the sector, according to a leading think tank.

Professor Catherine Harper, deputy vice-chancellor at the university, said: "Opportunities for health and social care development and progression are vital to ensure the sector recruits appropriatelyskilled and qualified workers in the numbers needed by regional employers."

THe one-year project will see further and higher education providers, public authorities and firms work together.

Among the guests were the Bognor Regis Motor Club, which organised the occasion, Mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, David's first wife, Jane Purley, his cousin, June Purley and his widow, Gail Woolston.

THe memorial situated near the previous Lec site, was initiated by Arun District Council and paid for by Rolls Royce.

Jane Purley, who married David in 1969, said: "David would love this. It's a really nice thing to do. People have forgotten him and he shouldn't be forgotten."

A special floral tribute was laid at the foot of the tribute which was based on a winners garland at a F1 Grand Prix.

In a speech, Colin Molyneux, magazine editor of Bognor Regis Motor Club, said: "Our aim today is to remind people of David's life and achievements, and bring them to the attention of more people, both far and wide."

Clive Sayer, former chairman of the motor club, added: "I heard recently about somebody who was working as a junior at Lec and David held the door open for him and said: 'All right mate, come on through.'

"THe junior thought, this guy is a formula one driver, a stunt pilot, a George Medal holder, a former army officer, a real hero and there he is holding the door open and saying hello to one of the most junior members of staff. THat was David, a really warm, loving and affectionate gentleman. We all miss him."

Cllr Phil Woodall said: "I'm very impressed with the memorial and I really like the location. It's a nice memory of a local resident and businessman."

David's widow, Gail Woolston said: "David and I married in 1982, our daughter, Claudia, was born in 1984 and sadly, David died a year later.

"THis is a lovely thing for not only myself and the rest of the family but for everyone.

"It's really nice that David is remembered as being a jolly nice bloke

An officer and a true gentleman DAVID PURLEY was born in Bognor Regis on January 26, 1945, and enlisted in the Royal Army to become an officer in the elite parachute regiment.

Son to the wealthy Lec refrigerator manufacturer, Charlie Purley, David served in Aden and once even survived a partial failure of his parachute during a training jump.

At the tender age of 22, David started car racing, having been inspired by Derek Bell's sensational Ferrari Grand Prix debut.

Funded by his father, David acquired an AC Cobra and started racing it in the 1968 season. After he totalled it in a big

crash from which he emerged unscathed, he switched to a 2-litre Chevron sportscar and ran it into 1969.

Eager to progress, he bought himself a Brabham BT28 to race in Formula 3 for 1970, naming his team Lec Refrigeration Racing, after his father's Bognor Regis company.

David two-timed between Formula Atlantic and Formula 1 in 1973, as he went his own way once again by entering a private Lec March 731 for his Grand Prix debut at Monaco.

One of David Purley's most memorable moments possibly comes from the tragic death of fellow Brit, Roger Williamson.

At the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix, Roger, who was also competing in his second grand prix, hit tragedy on lap eight.

Roger’s March crashed heavily after a suspected tyre failure, flipping upside down and sliding along the circuit. THe Englishman was alive, but the car was soon engulfed in flames.

As the other drivers sped past, David stopped on the opposite side of the track, sacrificing his own race and sprinted across to where Roger's car had come to rest and began a desperate attempt to free his fellow racer.

Hurling himself into the flames, David tried to overturn the March. Unable to do so alone, and without help from the marshals, he then found a fire

extinguisher and tried to douse the inferno.

Unfortunately, David's attempts to stop the flames failed and he once again began a vain attempt to overturn the car, waving frantically to the marshals for help but receiving none.

It later emerged that the marshals' clothing would have offered them no protection against the flames and they could have been terribly burnt.

Eventually, David was dragged away, furious, heartbroken and in little doubt that his friend had perished in the flames.

He was subsequently awarded the George Medal for his heroism. THree years later, Purley would tell Autosport magazine that his actions were the natural reaction of a man who had spent time in the armed forces.

He said: “What happened was purely a reflex action. In the service, if one saw a burning tank or something, one tried to help the people inside. With Roger’s accident it was exactly the same. It was a case of a man needing help.”

THe tragic accident also prompted changes to safety regulations.

David contested two more grand prix that season and then competed in his home race which would prove to be his last in Formula One. During pre-qualifying, the car’s throttle stuck open, which left David as no more than a passenger in an almighty shunt.

He suffered a multitude of broken bones and various other injuries.

David returned to compete in the Aurora British Formula One championship. It was an incredible feat for a man who had been so badly injured.

He had to be lifted from the car afterwards, but Purley had beaten the odds to make a return at all. He called it quits after that, reasoning that he had proven all he needed to.

After quitting racing, David ran the family business and he also moved in to competitive aerobatics.

David Purley tragically lost his life on July 2, 1985, when a technical fault on his aircraft sent him into the sea off the West Sussex coast.

Advisors explain how to tackle energy bills f L-R: Prof Jane Longmore, Clare Marchant & Andy Frampton

National look at uni science work VOCATIONAL and science-focused degrees being offered in Bognor Regis were the focus of a university visit by a national education official.

Clare Marchant, chief executive of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), visited the University of Chichester to discuss the changing landscape of higher education qualifications.

Her visit focused on how the university collaborates with nearby businesses to offer apprenticeships and its intentions to deliver 500 vocational and science, technology engineering and mathsfocused student places by 2020.

THese will be taught at the university's £35m engineering and digital technology park at its campus in Bognor

Regis, due to open this September.

Ms Marchant also spoke about the university's role in training teachers, which has been carried out on the campus for decades.

A university spokesman said: "On speaking with the university's department of admissions, Ms Marchant was interested to hear how Chichester has worked to retain applicants to its teacher-training courses in spite of a nationwide drop."

Ms Marchant met with Professor Jane Longmore, the university's vicechancellor, and other senior staff.

She was accompanied by Andy Frampton, the UCAS relationship manager south east and south, a former staff member at the university.

ADVISERS explained three steps to save money on fuel bills at special events in Chichester and Littlehampton.

THe money-saving experts from Arun and Chichester Citizen's Advice showed visitors how to take the sting out of the major household expense.

THey were urged to check, switch and save their bills at the free occasions held to mark the national big energy savings week initiative.

Arun and Chichester Citizen's Advice chief executive officer Luca Badioli said: "Big energy saving week is a fantastic

opportunity to get expert advice on a range of ways you can reduce your energy costs.

"Switching your tariff or supplier is normally the quickest and most effective way to bring your costs down, but you can also modify your home and change your habits.

"It's important for us to be taking part in big energy saving week as it's older people and those on the lowest incomes who are likely to be paying over the odds for their energy as they're least likely to switch."

THe events were held at the Wickbourne Centre in Littlehampton and Chichester District Council's offices in East Pallant House.

Clients who went along were guided by advisers to check their meter bills regularly to ensure they paid the right amount and to switch to a different tariff or supplier for better value by using Citizen's Advice's energy comparision tool.

THe third step to reducing bills is to turn off appliances, have a well serviced boiler and adequate insulation.

Chile white is cool way to enjoy a Sauvignon Blanc Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com ALDI has wines aplenty just above the entry-level price and spanning the midrange level (£5-£8) with great aplomb.

A veritable cornucopia of such wines awaits you at the Aldi Chichester store and I began my Aldi review this week by concentrating initially on three very different types of Sauvignon Blanc.

My first selection is that of a Castellore Grillo Sauvignon Blanc priced most competitively at just £4.99! Unlike Pinot Grigio, Grillo is not a well-known Italian grape variety, but the Grillo component of this wine has the scent of a heavily laden lemon tree, sun-tanned fruit flavours and splendid freshness.

85 per cent Grillo is complemented by the paler complexion and herbaceousness of the 15 per cent of the Sauvignon Blanc grape which enhances the stone-fruit character of the Grillo.

If you haven't tried Sicilian wine before, give this one a go as it is finely balanced with fresh acidity and exudes lemony verve with a tropical finish and at this price very little not to like!

For an outlay of just £5.49, a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc Reserva from the Valle

De Leyda and, part of Aldi's Exquisite Collection, is subtly floral, cut grassy and, pleasingly, has no overpowering citrus zing and is arguably the best Chilean Sauvignon Blanc I have tasted to date!

THis wine is early-evening relaxation personified and from cool vineyards in Chile is dry, crisp and a decidedly stylish Sauvignon Blanc which is delightfully more-ish and my white wine star buy of the week!

My last Sauvignon Blanc was from the renowned Marlborough region of New Zealand in the form of a 2016 Private Bin from the Exquisite Collection priced at £7.49.

THis one is not as strongly flavoured as some NZ Sauvignon Blancs, but nonetheless is smooth, light, fruity with a good aftertaste and is good easy drinking.

My last white wine selection was a 2016 Limestone Coast Exquisite Collection Chardonnay priced at £5.79 and able to dispel notions of alarm when Chardonnay is Australian emanating from the overoaked versions prevalent in the nineties.

THis one is pertinently unoaked and has a complex and expressive nose with undertones of honeysuckle and white flowers. THe gentle acidity ensures freshness and the weighty mouthfeel of pure fruits, notably lime zest, nectarine and peach in particular is underpinned by good minerality which lingers on the finish. THe creamy character of this wine contributes to this good example of balanced New World Chardonnay at an attractive price!

In terms of Champers, I have to yet

again laud the quality of the Monsigny Brut Champagne priced at an astonishing £10.99 and noted the good nose, fine bubbles, creaminess and flavours of baked apple and brioche. THe cellar ageing contributes to the richness, complexity and classic style and it remains a veritable bargain!

As for red wines, I espied a potential stunner of a vino, namely the 2015 Animus Douro priced at a miserly £4.99 and of Portuguese provenance made from port grapes.

INGREDIENTS For the cod: 500g of cod fillet, skin on and scaled soy sauce, for brushing 2 bunches of spring onions honey, for glaze

For the champagne sauce: 200ml of champagne 50g of butter 140g of mirin 20g of flour 1 pinch of salt

To plate: 100g of baby mixed salad leaves chives goji berries

1. Begin by making the champagne sauce.

Melt the butter and combine with the mirin, champagne and salt in a small pan. Bring to the boil then add the flour to the pan, whisking continuously until a smooth sauce

Keep in mind ways in which you can live your life well I AM embarking on a psychology course at the moment, so I can engage more with the mental elements to health and just generally understand people better.

It’s a subject, alongside nutrition, that I am fascinated with and always have been. THis opportunity arose for me through a company that I have worked with for many years, so how could I refuse? However, the amount of study hours I am having to put in before joining the course is proving challenging to say the least. Hopefully, it will be worth the late nights and early mornings.

One of the modules is about thoughts and feelings that people may experience when faced with death. THere are two guarantees in life, one is being born and the other is dying. As much as most of us avoid the subject, it’s an inevitable part of life.

I think it goes without saying that apparently it’s the most poignant time for reflection of your life, and the time where people have the most regrets.

From all the things you may achieve in life, the thing that affects people more when faced with their own demise is not what they have done, but what they haven’t.

I thought it was really interesting, and if we all stop to think about it would we change the way we are living right now? After all, every day is full of choices and we have the power to change anything at any time, any day.

Here is the top 10 list of regrets people had when reflecting back on their lives: 1. I wish I had lived my own life.

If this is the case do something about it now!

Spend time now working on the things you want to accomplish, or even try. Build a business, cultivate a great career, build a family, run a marathon, buy a

house in Italy, swim the Channel, start painting. THe greatest success lies in living your life in your own way.

2. I wish I had worked less.

Working constantly for something you don't passionately care about adds nothing but stress to your life. And even if the passion is there, keep your workload in balance with the rest of your life, otherwise you may feel you have missed out in other areas.

3. I wish I had lived up to my full potential.

Live up to your own aspirations, not down to others' expectations. THere is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living, or one that makes YOU happy.

4. I wish I had spent more time with the people I love.

It's easy to let that time slip away, but once it's gone you can never get it back. THis is something you can change right now if you have the chance.

5. I wish I had forgiven more.

It takes a strong person to say "I'm sorry," and an even stronger person to forgive. Forgive and let go, free yourself from grudges and enjoy happiness instead of wasting it.

6. I wish I had worried less.

Worry is just using your imagination to create the things you don't want. If you can't do anything about it what’s the use in worrying!

7. I wish I had stood up for myself.

Never allow yourself to be bullied or silenced. No

one is more important in this world than you are.

8. I wish I had cared less about what other people think.

Stop wasting your moments on other people's opinions. Ultimately, they are just opinions from those who don't fully share your reality.

9. I wish I had faced my fears.

Life is found in the distance between your deepest desire and your greatest fear. Remember, fear is only temporary, but regret lasts forever.

10. I wish I'd stopped chasing the wrong things.

When you let the wrong things go, you can give the right things a chance to catch you.

Later will be now before you know it. Don’t waste time on things that are not important to you. Life is for living!

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which covers the start of a new era for its work.

IT'S 2018 and the Aldingbourne Trust project is looking better than ever!

THe first half of the car park has had the base coat tarmac laid and work has already begun with the formation of the second half of the car park area.

THe onsite painting and fixing of thousands of cedar shingles on the new Quarry Building continues at a relentless pace.

Over the coming weeks, these little wooden rectangles will totally transform the look of this stunning building.

Internally, the dry lining works are ongoing and the first fix of mechanical and electrical systems is well underway.

THe feature concrete staircase to the first floor has been completed and looks fantastic.

With the underfloor heating in place on the ground floor, the concrete screed will be laid over the coming week. All upper floor screeds were completed before Christmas.

THe quarry building has been constructed using the Structural Framing System. SFS is an internal structural steel frame system used extensively throughout the construction industry. External cladding, mechanical and electrical fixes and plasterboard are

all secured to the SFS to build up the fabric of the building.

Development of the system during recent decades has enabled buildings to be built more quickly and cost effectively, with less reliance on timber joists and internal brickwork.

On their recent visit to Aldingbourne Country Centre, the Blogging Team visited the shop, which is home to many gifts as well as handmade items that the trust’s wood team create.

THey use recycled materials the trust collects and, along with the people they support, create some genuinely unique and unusual items! Chloe runs the shop and works alongside supported individuals to teach them all about the retail world – from updating stock and display, to helping and serving customers. THere really are so many transferable skills that can be gained from working inside a genuine retail environment.

THe team are, of course, very excited about the new shop that will be located in the brand new building and are already planning lots of exciting stock for the shelves!

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure its Aldingbourne Country Centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development. We would like to thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding while this exciting new development build is in process.

A CHARITY, pictured above and below, which helps people in the area with dementia is to be backed by solicitors in Chichester for the second year.

Lawyers and staff in the city's office of Irwin Mitchell have agreed to continue to back Dementia Support as their charity of the year.

THe national law firm's initiative sees staff across each of its offices hold a range of events each year for a good cause selected by a vote.

Dementia Support is a unique charity based in Tangmere with an aim to provide complete dementia services under one roof in a £1.74m support hub. THis is set to open in the spring.

Paula James, regional managing partner at Irwin Mitchell's Chichester office, said: "Everyone at the office agreed that we wanted to keep Dementia Support as a charity for another year so we can continue to support them while the hub opens its doors to the public and is in

THINK about fraud was the message from police to shoppers in Bognor Regis.

Two PCSOs spent a couple of hours in the town's Nationwide Building Society branch passing on the message.

THey spoke to dozens of customers about the dangers which they faced from fraudsters and scammers.

THose were who were more interested could listen to a 15 minute presentation, including an eight-minute film, and ask questions to PSCOs Jason Lemm and Richard Moorey.

PCSO Lemm said they could use real experiences of people who had fallen victim to the scammers as warnings.

"We would rather spend a short time with people passing on this message and protecting those who are vulnerable and most at risk of harm rather have to deal with the aftermath," he said.

He recalled an individual near Chichester last year who spent £88,000 trying to claim a 'prize' on a fake Australian lottery.

"THe first phone call he received after he replied to the letter which said he had won was fine. THe second asked him for £300 to pay taxes and then the amounts continued," said PCSO Lemm, pictured below. "Unfortunately, it can be really difficult for us to trace money. It can be transferred overseas and goes from account to account to account."

He was also aware a Chichester woman who received a phone call from a 'police officer' at Hammersmith Police Station who told her he had recovered her bank card after fraudulent activity had been noticed. He asked for all her financial details.

"Luckily, she realised there was a problem and spoke to a neighbour and didn't go any further. But the fraudsters don't want you to talk to anyone.

"THey will always target people who have disabilities or who are on their own," he said.

THeir visit to the town centre last week formed part of national fraud awareness week. THis was based around the message that a person should take five minutes to stop and think if a stranger contacts them with a request for personal information.

Matt Stanley, the branch's manager, pictured below, said information leaflets had been available for customers.

"We fairly frequently have people contact us about potential scams with emails and phone calls they have received. THey pop in with the information printed out for us to have a look at.

"Sometimes, they are genuine and sometimes they aren't.

People are becoming more aware of this sort of issue," he said.

FREE eight week activity courses for people who would like to be more active are set to start in Bognor Regis.

THe three courses will be run by the Arun Wellbeing team to suit those who either don't exercise or rarely exercise.

THe courses could be the way to kick start a healthy exercise routine for the rest of the year to maintain a new year's resolution to lose weight or to add activity to a lifestyle.

Cllr Mike Clayden, cabinet member for community wellbeing at Arun District Council, said: "Arun Wellbeing's activity courses are always hugely popular. I'd recommend anyone wanting to increase their activity levels but unsure how to go about it, to consider booking a place."

THe first activity course will be spinning for a popular, low impact workout. It's suitable for beginners and trained instructors will conduct the course to make it suitable for everyone to provide all the benefits of cycling in winter without having to struggle with the weather.

THere is also a beginners' fitness course. THis will be a repeat of the extremely popular course from the previous round of courses. It will feature a range of activities in a circuits-style format.

THe Learn to Run course will offer the basics in getting going for those unsure or lacking in confidence about how start running.

Postcards provide snapshot of town's past

The arrival of the holiday messages was eagerly awaited AS WE wish for summer, with warmer weather, I thought we could take a look at picture postcards and their history. Today, we see people on the seafront and around the town with their mobile phones either speaking or sending text messages to friends and family.

How different this is to the past when the only way of communicating with those left behind was the humble postcard.

Nationally, the first postcard was produced in October, 1869, and I believe it would be impossible to contemplate the numbers that have been sent since that date.

THe cards have changed considerably from the first, which only allowed the address on one side and the message on the reverse, to the colourful postcards of the present day. Before 1894, many of the British postcards were quite plain. THey were known as postal stationery cards, and usually had a view depicting exhibitions or advertising. However, from September, 1872, the private picture postcard was officially permitted. In 1882, the first reply paid postcard was introduced.

In a Girls Realm magazine of 1900 there was an article regarding its perception of the postcard, which began: “I can imagine a future generation building up by their help (the postcard) all the life of today, our children, our pets, our adventuress youth etc. all are to be

found thereon.".

THe report continued: “the postcard belongs to a period peopled by a hurried generation which has not many minutes to spare for writing to friends, what with the express trains, telegrams and telephones the world has become a small place".

THe Victorians said ‘how absurd it is to write private information on an open piece of cardboard', and they believed that they would never catch on. How wrong they were to be proved!

In their heyday, just before the First World War, about 2 million postcards were posted daily. In 1902, the introduction of postcards with divided backs, which allowed not only the address but also a message, which was done to encourage the use of the postcard, took place.

It was a regular occurrence to send a postcard home to say ‘I shall be home on the 5pm train tonight'. I have also read where a wife saw her husband off on the train and sent a postcard to the butcher giving her order for the afternoon meat delivery. Another favourite remark was 'here is another one for your collection'.

Bognor has had its fair share of postcard photographers and publishers covering a range of scenes and events. THere were a wide range of postcard producers in the last century such as R Briant Burgess, Cleeves,

It was a regular occurrence for a person to send a postcard home with the time of their train

King and Wilson, Lawrence Wood, WP Marsh, Donald Massey, Webster and Webb and more who produced just a few cards. Nationally, production rose to the challenge of supplying these much-requested postcards into an extremely large business.

However, we should be careful when viewing postcards. Such as one which clearly shows a very early view of Bognor dated 1815 – that is the view of course, not when the postcard was produced. Some are titled incorrectly and I have a number that show areas of the town such as THe Royal Hotel, named as Blake’s Road, Felpham, or another showing London Road purporting it to be Station Road, so local historians beware.

A large number of cards were produced to commemorate the visit of King George V during his convalescence in Bognor, produced to enable the visitor to report home that they had been to see the King, or at least the house in which he stayed.

Many of these cards were produced to raise funds, such as one by Kodak which was to devote all the profits to the King Edward Hospital Fund of which King George was a patron. Postcard producers have always dreamed of being in a position to link views and national events to increase their sales and those in Bognor really took the opportunity to do so at this time.

Advertising cards also had their place, and E & O Carter, whose shop was situated in the High Street, produced such a card. THe one I have in my collection was typed and sent to a customer with the message, 'We are not sure if it is white or light cream No 3 Star Sylko you require, we have just received light cream 739'.

Service from a bygone age!

THe area has had its fair share of events to be shown on postcards, from the King's visit in 1929 to the visit of the clowns in the 1980s. We have also had our share of disasters with the ship wreck at Aldwick to the numerous high seas and flooding that were recorded on to locally produced cards.

Air views of any place are always interesting, and this particular view of the centre of Bognor clearly shows St John’s Church, THe Pavilion and Waterloo Square, before the bowling green arrived. THis type of card is of course invaluable today to the local historian, providing a snapshot of the area at a particular time.

THe comic postcards were also well sought out by the holidaymaker, from the point of view of humour, but also because many cards invariably had had a small lift-up flap from where 10-12 fold-up views of their chosen holiday destination would emerge.

THese provided more views of their holiday destination and were eagerly awaited by those at home.

It is difficult for us today to try and imagine the excitement that would have been created by the arrival of these small pieces of card, at a time when communications were so much more difficult than today. No television, no holiday programmes, no regular newspaper, no glossy magazines from which to choose your holiday destination, just these small pictorial cards from which to glean information about other areas of the country. However, today these ‘little pieces of cardboard’ are in decline.

Chi hunt back-to-back wins as bonus PostSport point victory ends January blues CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping to put their January blues behind them and achieve a strong finish to the season.

THe Oaklands Park side had a tough start to 2018 by losing their first three fixtures of the new year.

But the Blues ended that poor run last weekend, chalking up a comfortable 34-8 bonus point victory at home to Gravesend.

Chi, who are fourth in the London Division One South, will hope to follow that up tomorrow at THurrock (3pm) when they face an Essex side who have lost three of their past four. For Scot Ashley's injury-hit side, the fact they have banished those January blues with victory last weekend will put them in good stead for the final three months of the season.

After the Gravesend win, club spokesman Roger Gould said: "On a day when even the ducks moaned about the rain, both teams did their best to cope with the conditions.

"THere was only one practical tactic on the pitch which meant mauls, scrums, drives and occasional kicking to touch for the lineout lads to keep warm.

"Gravesend are struggling to survive in this demanding league and included several colts

players who never gave up although Chi were clearly better after a slow start."

Despite conceding an early penalty, Chi made the stronger start and went in front on the 20 mark as the forwards secured a penalty score. THey took charge moments later when, following hard work by Aaron Davies and Ben Robson, the ball was arrowed across the backs for Adrian Lynch to cut back inside and dive to the line for his first try of the season to make the score 12-3.

Jack Hamilton-Fox showed his good footwork and then used his speed to finish off from 15 metres before Martin 'Tarzan' O’Callaghan swung over the top of the defence to make it 24-3 at the break.

Second-half scores from Toby Golds and a second for Hamilton-Fox sealed the win for the Blues. * Second-placed Bognor RFC host Ellingham & Ringwood tomorrow (2pm) looking to close the gap at the top of Hampshire One. THe Purple and Greens defeated Fordingbridge 27-12 last time out for their first win of 2018.

THe match was special for Joe and Danny Greenslade, who became the first father and son to play together in the first team.

CHICHESTER College are the only unbeaten side left in the Chi Netball League Division One as they registered their third win on the bounce to take charge of the standings.

THe College team took the game to midtable outfit Lilac Storm, eventually winning 45-18. Storm put up a good fight with excellent shooting from Michelle Armstrong but were unable to crack coach Nic Holmes' strong team.

Elsewhere, the two bottom of division teams, Matchmakers and Wolverines Blue, played out a close encounter.

THe teams were near evens stevens at the break until Matchmakers went all out in the third quarter with ten goals. Despite a good final push, Wolves were unable to claw back enough goals in the final quarter with the win going to Matchmakers 32-21. Outstanding performances from Matchmakers Hannah Brierley, Anni Smith and Amelia Savry in the centre court raised Matchmakers up to third.

Court 3 hosted coach Georgina Fage's two

University teams Pink Ladies and Spice Goals.

Pink Ladies took the early lead 10-1 after the first quarter and they didn't let up, winning 30-8. THat victory takes them into second place.

In the Premiership, three teams are tied for top spot with Wolverine Pink, Blue Flames and Red Flames all sitting on 12 points.

Wolves were first up taking on Footloose.

In an exciting clash between two evenly matched sides, it was Footloose who came out the winners, securing a 29-25 win.

Pink stay top on goal difference after Red Flames doused the Blues. Despite trailing by 2 goals after the first quarter, Red Flames turned it around and kept the lead throughout the rest of the game. All action and a close match, Red Flames won 20-16 with great shooting from Phillipa Sorrell and Sarah Adlington.

Midhurst Netball Club's Jets are off the bottom after defeating Clovers 25-14. THat win takes last year's champions up to fifth in the seven-team division.

ATHLETICS: A contingent of Chichester Runners & AC members travelled to the Lee Valley Athletic Centre in North London for the annual prestigious London Indoor Games.

THe event attracts athletes of all age groups from across the UK, as well as overseas - and it proved to be a perfect weekend for some of Chi's fledgling squad to gain some valuable early competition experience.

Everyone of the squad not only represented their club well, they also all clocked personal bests.

In the U17 age group, Phoebe Pontet finished second in her 60m hurdles race, stopping the clock at a PB 10.28sec, and followed it up with another good second spot placing in the 60m sprint at 8.85 sec again a PB. Emily Russell broke her 60m PB with a winning time of 8.66sec and then having been drawn in lane one of the 200m, successfully negotiated the tight bends and banking of the indoor track, to record 28.75sec for 4th place.

Rosie Compton leaped out to a good season`s opener of 4.38m in the long jump and ran very well in her 60m sprint for a PB of 8.79sec. She later recorded 29.28sec in the 200m. Both U15s also enjoyed a good weekend with Fleur Hollyer recording a new PB 10.60sec in the 60m hurdles and scored a fine victory in her 60m sprint with an 8.50sec PB. Sophie Dudman again looked very strong with an excellent win in her 60m hurdles, clocking a fine 10.12sec PB.

DARTS: Newtown Amity and the Legends secured comfortable wins in week nine of the Friday Benevolent Darts League.

FOOTBALL: Bognor Regis Town FC will be holding a two academy training days during February half term.

THe sessions will give youngsters aged five to 16 a chance to receive coaching from first team coaches and players, including Ollie Pearce, Jimmy Muitt and Calvin Davies.

All are welcome to attend the sessions on February 12 and 13 at Bognor's Nyewood Lane ground. Sessions cost £15 for one day or £25 for both.

Lions drop to sixth as weather puts paid to promotion push

Medal haul for Chi's runners CHICHESTER'S veterans showed that age has no barriers as their squad notched two team podiums in the Sussex Masters' Championships.

Despite testing conditions on one of the hardest courses in the county, a squad of 27 veteran athletes produced some fine performances to return home from Lancing Manor with a series of medals.

By the end, Chichester AC were the top team club in the men’s events and second overall with the combined score only beaten by the allconquering Arena 80 women’s squad who cleaned up in all three women’s age groups.

For the first time for many years, Chichester turned out in force in the over-40 men’s race.

Despite the late withdrawal of 2017 runner-up James Baker because of injury, the eightman Chichester squad put in some solid scores.

Charles Rodmell led the club home in fifth followed by improving Simon Dunne in 14th and Justin Eggins in 26th.

Keith Akerman got the final 'A' team spot in 29th, being awarded the same time as Stephen Davy (30th).

In the O50 John Bullard brought the club home in 21st

place with Dee Caldwell (26th) and Tim Brown (37) also competitive.

In the O60s, Chi performed well and were just three points away from team medal.

With an inspired run, Richard Miles finished in third place among the O60s to relegate a host of previous medalists to positions outside the top three.

With Tom Blaylock in 12th and Jan Hill 15th, the team total was just behind Brighton Phoenix on 27 points in bronze and Crawley in silver on 25.

In the women's races, Helen Dean led the club home and gained a well-deserved individual bronze medal in the O55 age group.

She was followed home

by O45s Nadia Anderson in 17th and Elizabeth Robinson (19th).

055s Sandra Nemorin-Noel and Sue Baker made it across the line in 15th and 18th respectively in their category.

THe team total of 36 points was a mere three points off silver.

But after all the trials and tribulations of the day, Chi's O55s were delighted to be coming home with county medals round their necks.

PAGHAM'S push for silverware continues this week as the Lions fight on in two separate competitions.

Ritchie Hellen and Tom Simmonds' side lost ground on the leaders in the SCFL Premier last weekend when the wet weather saw their match with East Preston called off midway through the second half.

With the Lions leading 1-0 at the time, some at Pagham were left frustrated as it means they now drop to sixth in the very competitive division, seven points behind league leaders Haywards Heath but with a game in hand.

But they do not have long to wait for redress - returning to league action tomorrow when they travel to Crawley Down Gatwick (3pm).

THen, on Tuesday, the Lions host Horsham in the rearranged quarter final of the Sussex Senior Cup (7.30pm).

THe initial match against the Isthmian South side was postponed at late notice after a number of visiting players were involved in a road accident.

Win through to the semi-final, and a date at the Amex Stadium in Brighton in May does not seem that far away - but Horsham have to be defeated first.

'Underdogs' City ready for Vase Ne

CHICHESTER City manager Miles Rutherford says his side will embrace the underdog tag as his history-makers fight it out for a place in the quarter final of the FA Vase.

THe Lillywhites make the 480-mile round trip to Cheshire tomorrow as City face 1874 Northwich in the last 16 of the national nonleague knockout competition (3pm).

Chi, who are third in the SCFL Premier, know they will have a tough task against their North West Counties Premier opponents, who have lost just twice in the league all season.

But the City boss is urging his side to

embrace their outsider tag which be believes will bring the best out of his team.

On the eve of the match, Rutherford said: "We’ll go up there and give it our best shot. We know Northwich will be a very strong side.

"THe whole club is looking forward to it, though. It would be fantastic to get into the last eight. On the day it’s 11 against 11.

"THere’s always a chance but we’re not expecting an easy ride one bit. We know it’s going to be a really tough game."

Chi are making the journey up to Cheshire today as they look to be fresh for the match at

Even with a couple of injuries, they will be boosted with strikers Jimmy Wild and Dave Herbert both being available for the match.

Rutherford said: "I go into games wanting to be an underdog. It brings the best out in some people. I think our side’s a bit like that as well."

Win, lose, or draw, Chi will not have long to rest on their laurels.

On Tuesday, they travel to league leaders Haywards Heath in the fourth round of the Peter Bentley Cup (7.45pm).

With Chi six points behind Heath but with a game in hand, it will give Chi a chance to put a marker in the sand ahead of the league run-in. * It's a busy weekend for everyone associated with Oaklands Park.

On Sunday (midday), Chichester City Ladies will make an equally long trip north to Shropshire to face THe New Saints in the fourth round of the FA Women's Cup. THe Green Army, who are sixth in the FA Premier League South, make the trip to Oswestry knowing they have a division edge on their Midlands One opponents.

But THe New Saints have been in good form, sitting second in the division and having scored 66 goals in all competitions so far.

City have played only twice since the start of December.

But with potential ties against WSL sides like Manchester City and Chelsea awaiting, City will need little incentive.

Sids smash six past bottom side Ferring SIDLESHAM'S quest for SCFL Division Two remains a distant dream despite Daren Pearce's side chalking up an impressive 6-2 home win over Ferring.

Goals from Callum Dowdell, Daniel Byles, Liam-Jay Bush, Ryan Hillier, Joe Palmer and Harry Gregory secured the three points for the Green and Golds against a side who belied their position at the foot of the table.

THat win took Sids to fourth - still firmly in the hunt for a top two position.

But with other sides around them with games in hand, Pearce knows his team can afford few slip-ups as the season approaches its final stages.

Next up is a visit from fifth-placed Westfield tomorrow (3pm), who will make one of

longest trips in the whole of SCFL football to play at the Recreation Ground.

Fellow SCFL Division Two side Bosham travel to play Worthing Town tomorrow (3pm) looking to continue their good run which sees them undefeated in six.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey slipped to eighth after losing 4-1 on the road at league leaders Little Common.

Sam Agostinelli scored the consolation for the Blues.

Steve Bailey's side have the chance to get back to winning ways welcoming Oakwood to the High Street Ground tomorrow (3pm).

THeir opponents sit second bottom and Selsey know a victory would put them in contention for a top six finish.

Wanted: Rocks home league win - last seen six months ago Next Game

TRURO CITY (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

THE ROCKS will be out to give their home fans their first taste of league victory for six months at home to Truro City tomorrow.

Regulars to Nyewood Lane will need no reminding of Bognor's failure to turn possession into goals - and ultimately points - this campaign.

With three months of the season to go, the Rocks' supporters have celebrated three points at home just twice all campaign - and both of those were back in August.

THe mood was not lifted last weekend when Bognor could only muster a draw away at Hungerford Town.

With seventh-place Truro City making the long-trek to Nyewood Lane tomorrow (3pm), the second-bottom Rocks know they are fast running out of chances to pull themselves clear of danger in National South.

But they could make a big step towards closing the six-point gap to safety by chalking up a rare victory in front of their home crowd.

Manager Jack Pearce has been very clear he understands the fans' frustrations.

He said: "Our supporters have been fantastic this year, especially when you consider how little we have given them to celebrate, particularly at home."

When the Post asked if Pearce could recall the last time his side had won at home in the league,he said: "I know - it's August, it's been far too long."

THose wins against Bath City on the opening day and Whitehawk on August 15 may seem like a long way away.

As if they need any reminder of the Rocks' plight, the away draw at Hungerford on a damp boggy pitch means they have now not won in ten in the National South But the mood of some of the Nyewood faithful will have been picked up with the news of the capture of Icelandic striker Stefan Ljubicic from Brighton & Hove Albion on loan until the end of the season.

Some Rocks fans may have lifted their eyebrows when Pearce claimed his side would be in the top six if they had a good central striker.

And it does seem odd to place such hopes on an 18-year-old who has had little experience of English football.

But Pearce, who has nearly five decades at the club, has been looking for a tall, powerful central striker to play up front for the past five months.

THe hope is that Ljubicic strikes up a good relationship with the Rocks' other frontmen, such as Jimmy Muitt, who scored at Hungerford, Ben Swallow and Ibra Sekajja.

Anthony Nelson, a 20-year-old wide player from the Cayman Islands, has also been added to the squad after a spell playing for Valparaiso University in the top division of the US Colleges League.

Rocks swoop for striker Stefan THE ROCKS' long-term search for a towering frontman seems to have ended with the capture of Icelandic youth international Stefan Ljubicic from Brighton & Hove Albion.

THe 18-year-old striker, who has played 14 times for his country's Under 18 and Under 19 teams, scoring seven goals, has signed on loan at Nyewood Lane to the end of the campaign.

Standing at 6 feet 4 inches in height, he fills the void that manager Jack Pearce has been looking for in the last five months.

THe hope is that fellow frontmen Jimmy Muitt and Ibra Sekajja will thrive playing off him, starting on Saturday at home to Truro City.

With Ugandan international Ibra Sekajja, Cayman Island Under 21 international Anthony Nelson, Richard Gilot from France and Egyptian Sami El-Abd, Stefan joins a multi national squad.

In other news, Manny Adebowale's loan from Dover has been extended until April, which is welcome news following Sami ElAbd's current injury.

Following Ljubicic's signing, a club spokesman said: "We are extremely grateful to both Brighton and Dover and look forward to welcoming Stefan on Saturday."

THERE are 15 games to go now and everyone is looking at our league position and wondering whether we can still climb out of the relegation battle.

I often get stick for staying optimistic but I still feel we can avoid the drop. We really need to improve our home form, though, if we are to do so.

Away from home, we seem to be playing with more freedom and this has been the case on many trips across the country this season.

An astounding 12 draws in the league this year so far has been why we are where we are in the league. On more than one occasion, we have been ahead in games and then not finished it with a win, but instead conceded goals at pivotal moments in matches.

THe team spirit is great at the moment despite our league position which is why I stay optimistic.

Without doubt, we have had a great boost with Kristian Campbell committing himself for the remainder of the season and with players hopefully returning from injury soon we might be nearing a better strength squad come March.

But the time is now to start building some kind of momentum in a very tight league.

THe voice of Nyewood Lane was away on work commitments for our last home match against Wealdstone.

So I took on the role of tannoy announcer very cautiously and soon appreciated how complex and difficult it can be. Not only do you have to make sure you have the players' names down, you also need to keep people aware of things going on around the ground and events at Seasons, while of course acknowledging all of our many valued sponsors. I

really gave last Friday night’s horse race event a push!

Despite me taking on this task, the team on the pitch didn’t perform as we succumbed to a 3-0 loss to the Stones.

All is not lost - Richard returns to the tannoy tomorrow at home to Truro City - and I return to scoreboard duties!

I am much more confident in that role and don’t envy Richard’s work during home games.

I have to say a big thanks to all of the fans for donating to the cause. By that I mean the James Crane injury fund.

Rocks' fans managed to raise enough money to go towards Craney’s shoulder surgery in a matter of days and I have been told that this could happen within the next two weeks, so that is also really positive news.

So, after another defeat at home it was off to Hungerford Town with Rocks on Tour Travel thanks to the supporters' club.

THe Crusaders were about mid-table as we arrived to a sodden and very muddy Bulpit Lane. You could argue it was a proper non-league pitch but it has to be one of the worst I have seen this season, and indeed lucky for the game to go ahead as the rain poured.

It certainly played its part as Bognor went behind in the first half to a dubious penalty call.

But Bognor battled in the sludge and eventually a superb ball across by Dan Beck fell to Jimmy Muitt who shrugged off his marker before slotting in to gain a point. Sadly, Poole Town also won, moving them further ahead of us in the relegation battle. But there’s a long way to go yet! I still believe.
