OIL explorers are hoping to keep drilling near Bognor Regis for another decade.

Angus Energy has applied for planning permission to continue to use the two wells until 2020.

THe company has said approval will help meet Britain’s energy needs.

Running club now in charge of race RUNNERS are taking over running of the biggest public sporting event in Bognor Regis.

THe Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners are leading the organisation of the Bognor Prom 10k race for the first time, in partnership with its founding organisation, Bognor Hotham Rotary Club.

THe 24th staging of the race will take place along the town's seafront on May 20, 2018, under the leadership of race director Judith Bazeley.

THe race is fully licensed with England Athletics and there are 2,000 places.

David McManus, race entries secretary, said: "Last year we had 1,850 entries. THis year we are looking to exceed that and we continue to publicise the race through social media and other means."

THose who line up at the start in Silverston Avenue will see a number of improvements on race day compared with previous years to make it more enjoyable for them, families and friends.

THis include a revamped race village to enhance the experience on the day, a new medal design, a goody bag to enjoy and race photography along the course for pictures to purchase to provide a reminder for runners of their achievements.

THe 2018 race charity is Dementia Support. Ms Bazeley said: "Each year, the Bognor Prom 10k nominates a charity to work with and for 2018 we have chosen Dementia Support, who are doing amazing work supporting people with dementia and working with the community to make West Sussex dementia-friendly."

Sally Tabbner, the charity's chief executive, said: "It's great to be supported by two prominent community organisations - Tone Zone Runners and Bognor Hotham Rotary.

"Working in partnership will raise awareness of the disease of dementia, and it will also help us promote the new Dementia Support Hub, which is due to officially open this May. So, the timing couldn't be better.

"Everyone running and raising money for Dementia Support will be helping provide sustainable dementia care for people in the West Sussex area.

"THe hub will be a unique facility where all dementia services will be accessible under one roof."

THe race was begun by Bognor Hotham Rotary Club in 1995 and organised solely by its members until 2017. THey then formed a partnership with the Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners.

THis year's race sees the Runners lead planning and organisation for the first time.

THat is taking place on the back of a record-breaking year in which 1,574 runners finished the seafront course back in Silverston Avenue.

THe race was won by James Westlake in the men's category in 31min 47sec and Johanna Spannagl in the women's in 38:50.

As with previous years, there will be junior fun runs for 7-11 and 12-14-yearolds across 800m and 1.5km along the seafront before the main race.

A CALL has been made for motorists to report potholes in the Bognor Regis area.

THe current cold weather after the wet conditions for much of the winter is leading to roads around the town deteriorating.

West Sussex County Council and its contractor, Balfour Beatty, are working to repair the worst of them as soon as possible.

Its cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, Cllr Bob Lanzer, said: "THe county council is responsible for maintaining around 2,500 miles of road. Staff cannot be everywhere

at once and residents can really help West Sussex Highways be as efficient as possible by using this online reporting method."

Concerns about potholes can be reported online using the Love West Sussex app at westsussex.gov.uk/roadsand-travel "THe recent wet weather and variations between mild and cold/ freezing temperatures have resulted in more potholes being reported to the council," said Cllr Lanzer. "Please bear with our staff and contractors, who are working hard to get the worst of these repaired as soon as possible."

f Volunteers at the cafe's launch A CAFE with a difference has opened in in Bognor Regis.

THe community venture is taking place every Wednesday to offer delicious refreshments as well as advice and practical help.

THis week saw the opening of the popup activity from 10am-1pm at the Bognor Youth and Community Centre.

Plenty of homemade scones, chocolate chip cookies, fairy cakes and flapjacks provided mouth-watering treats for the invited guests along with good quality coffee and tea.

THe cafe will run alongside a host of other activities at the centre in Westloats Lane.

THese will include advice and guidance clinics, practical workshops and skills training.

THe schemes are the idea of the Making THeatre Gaining Skills Community Interest

Company. Its director, Hilary Strong, said: "We will be holding costume-making workshops for three weeks from next Wednesday.

"THese will help parents make costumes for World Book Day next month.

"THey will allow them to make the costumes of their choice. We will have a costume maker and the equipment people will need to create something special for their children."

THe drop-in sessions are free and will continue at the same times on February 21 and 28.

"After those, the next thing we are going to do is probably a Harry Potter day in the Easter holidays.

"More seriously, we will be holding legal advice sessions alongside the cafe. People will be able to find out if they will need a solicitor or not or they can be signposted to

other services.

"We also hope to have other organisations like My Sister's House, Citizen's Advice and Coastal West Sussex Mind here as well."

THe cafe is being run by volunteers. THe trio on the first day were Rhys Jones, 21, Marcia Avery, 41, and Zoe Gibson, 34.

Rhys is on the Workaid programme of the Aldingbourne Trust, which works with adults with learning disabilities.

He said: "We are taking teas and coffees to customers when they want them and getting the cakes and biscuits for them.

"I'm enjoying everything about it working as a team and learning skills."

THe initiative was boosted with ÂŁ500 from Bognor Regis Rotary Club alongside other funding. "We wanted to help to start this up to make it a place where people from the community can come to enjoy themselves," he said.

BRENT geese feeding on a field in North Bersted have cast doubt on official reports, housing campaigners have claimed.

THe internationally protected birds were seen daily last month for 13 days off Chalcraft Lane on their annual visit to the area.

Albert Homer, who helped to found the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (PAGAM), said the birds' presence showed more efforts were needed to guard against disruption caused by large-scale housing plans close to Pagham Harbour nature reserve.

He claimed the sightings showed a report on the impact of one of the proposals was wrong when it stated Brent geese would not forage more than 200m from the coast or where the view was clear for less than 500m.

"Members of the RSPB and the Sussex Ornithological Survey have expressed a view that the mitigation proposed... is quite inadequate in that a much larger planted area is required to adequately compensate for the loss of foraging grounds should the proposed developments go ahead," he said.

"Some mitigation measures rely on the relocation of the affected species.

"However, it is likely in many cases that this upsets the balance of nature in the relocation zone and either the relocated species dies out or it flourishes and displaces another species.

"For this reason, mitigation by relocation is bound to fail in many cases and the decline of various species in the

area where developments are proposed is inevitable."

THe three housing schemes being considered by Arun District Council are for 250 homes (Sefter Road), 300 in Hook Lane and 400 (Summer Lane).

Mr Homer said the Wetland Bird Survey had indicated a number of species around Pagham Harbour had moved their feeding grounds in the nature reserve to the more northerly parts of the harbour.

If the housing was built, the impact of the cats and dogs owned by occupiers of the properties also had the potential to harm the animals in the nature reserve.

A survey by THe Mammal Society from April 1 to August 31, 1997, said the estimated 9m cats in Britain at the time would have led to the demise of 25-29m birds in that period, as well as 52-63m mammals and 4-6m reptiles and amphibians.

"THe threat that would be caused to wildlife both in the nature reserve and the surrounding countryside by the domestic cats belonging to residents in the proposed developments must be painfully obvious," he said.

"THe potential for wholesale disruption and, indeed, destruction of wildlife in and around the Pagham Harbour nature reserve is clear.

"In combination with other factors such as flooding, the need for agricultural land and inadequacy of supporting infrastructure, it must surely lead to the conclusion it would be foolhardy to advocate these sites as suitable for strategic development."

` Hotel decision APPROVAL of plans to expand a Felpham hotel is expected soon.

Arun District Council's planning officers are due to back the scheme for the Beachcroft Hotel in the next few days.

THey were given an extension of time by the planning agent of the hotel's owners, Peter and Lana de Savary, to make a decision until last Friday.

Council group of planning Neil Crowther told the agent, Ivon Blumer, in an email: "THe application is likely to be recommended for conditional approval under delegated powers."

THe extension of time, the second beyond the legal limit to determine an application, was needed for further information about engineering and to allow for a response from county highways.

THe project is to build a detached nine bedroom annexe for the hotel on the boat pound between Greenock Villa and THe Gunpoint in Clyde Road.

THe expansion has split opinion.

Arun had received 47 letters in support and 21 against by Tuesday.

` Phone stolen A THIEF stole an iPhone 6 when a vehicle in Harbour View Road, Pagham, was broken into during the early hours of February 2.

Tools were stolen from a shed in Shripney Lane, North Bersted, overnight on January 31. A van parked in Sunningdale Gardens, North Bersted, was entered on January 26 and tools were stolen.

Petition seeks town ice rink RESIDENTS have been urged to support a petition to take Bognor Regis back to the ice age.

THe success of the Christmas ice rink on the town's seafront has led Bognor Regis Civic Society to launch the petition to call for a permanent rink to be built.

THe petition was announced by the society's deputy chairman, Hugh Coster, at its meeting on Tuesday.

He said: "People have called for an ice rink in this town for many years. It was obvious from the popularity of the temporary rink at Christmas how well used a permanent rink would be.

"It was fantastic seeing all the smiling faces of all ages in the rink over Christmas.

THe petition does not seek the rink necessarily on the same site of the Place St Maur.

"But it is asking Arun District Council to consider including a rink in its regeneration proposals for the future."

THe petition states: "In view of the tremendous success of the Christmas temporary ice rink, we, the undersigned, petition Arun District Council to incorporate a permanent, quality ice rink, possibly multi-use, into the Bognor Regis regeneration plans currently under consideration."

THe petition is being distributed by the civic society in the next few days. It is set to be available to sign at the Picturedrome cinema and other independent businesses.

Mr Coster said it would remain open until 1,500 signatures was reached.

"THe petition has been a paper one

because Arun will not accept online petitions," he said.

THe civic society has staged several petitions in the past 20 years. Some have exceeded 10,000 signatures.

Mr Coster said that level of support, while welcome, was unnecessary for the latest one.

"We need 1,500 signatures for Arun to have to discuss our petition. It will not compel them to include an ice rink but they will have to debate it," he said.

"By making the facility multi-use, it will overcome the expense of opening an ice rink in the summer."

Calls for an ice rink in Bognor Regis date back at least 30 years when a company called Penhale wanted to build one. But the scheme failed to get approval and faded away.

More recent regeneration efforts have seen the idea of an ice rink raised again without any success.

But the six-week success of the Ice Skating on the Prom attraction on the Place St Maur saw the town's first covered ice rink attract thousands of skaters of all ages. THe managers of the attraction told the Post last month they wanted to return bigger and better later this year.

Kara Cole, who ran the attraction with her husband, James, said: "I would definitely come back to Bognor Regis...the community have been amazing."

Arun's regeneration ideas such as the Hothamton linear park were criticised at the meeting by several people, including Mr Coster.

Health service careers are just the job for Barnham students PUPILS from a Barnham school have learned about health careers.

THe St Philip Howard Catholic High School students were among those who attended an NHS careers event at St Richard's Hospital last week.

THe interactive days on THursday and Friday at the hospital's Medical Education Centre included a vast array of job opportunities for the students to learn about.

THose who went along included St Philip Howard's Aaron Taylor, 16, who has hopes of becoming a paramedic.

He said: "I am St John Ambulance first aid trained and want to become a paramedic. I found the two days really interesting and an amazing opportunity.

It's confirmed to me that it's the right career choice for me. It's a career I would enjoy doing and I like helping people and would put that above anything else."

Elliot Eade, 18, who also attends the school, enjoys working with children.

He said: "I am looking at paediatric medicine. I like working with children and I definitely want to go in to health care. THis course has been really interesting and has confirmed the NHS is the right workplace for me."

THe interactive demonstrations included an ambulance with a lifelike dummy, anaesthetist and cannulation session with anaesthetist Dr Amin Eikhawad. He showed the students how to make patients breathe during surgery.

Charity event for Felpham teen aims to hit £50,000

GENEROUS golfers could help a father whose teenage son died suddenly from a heart condition hit his £50,000 fundraising target this year.

Daniel Hoare, from Felpham, was just 18 when he died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in November, 2011.

An annual golf day in his memory has been held by his father, Don Hoare, and friends James Mclean and James Ashman to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

THe six tournaments so far have brought in £40,715, with £3,606 coming in last year. THe next event will take place on August 26 at Bognor Regis Golf Club.

Mr Hoare said he hoped golfers would again support the good cause.

Hannah Miller, the BHF's fundraising manager for Sussex, praised the efforts of Daniel's family and friends.

cardiovascular disease.

"All the money raised in Daniel's memory will be used to fund the science that can help us win the fight against heart disease and stop devastating the lives of so many families."

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition in which a portion of the heart becomes thickened without an obvious cause. THis results in the heart being less able to pump blood effectively.

Daniel died suddenly when he was running for a train after he had been studying at college.

He was a keen sportsman who had played golf for the county.

From page one Drilling in Sack Lane was granted to another operator in 1985. THe first well was approved in February, 2006, and the second well went ahead in the latter part of last year. Permission for the first well expires this month.

Angus Energy is a joint owner of the site and its operator. It produced 50 barrels of oil a day last year.

Facilities on the 1.62 hectare site include four oil tanks, a water holding tank and a three-phase separator for oil, water and gas.

“THe production process includes crude oil, water and gas flowed by the wellheads to the separator which directs fluids into the on-site storage tanks,” says Mr Oldridge.

“Treated crude oil is loaded on to road tankers and exported to approved oil storage facilities.

“THe proposed development will involve HGV movements from the site to deliver oil processed and receive fuel and essential site equipment. However, the number of vehicle journeys will be no more than that suggested in the 2006 planning application.”

THis will involve eight return journeys a week by road tankers carrying crude oil and no more than eight return car journeys a day for the two full-time workers at the site and any visitors.

“THe site at Lidsey has been operational for many years and it has been successfully managed as a production facility without an impact on the local community or environment. THe site’s relatively remote location enables it to continue production operations from the existing two wells and will not result in any unacceptable environmental or amenity impact,” Mr Oldridge says.

DOZENS of singers will be raising the roof at their special day in Bognor Regis.

THey will be taking part in this year's ChoirFest after the success of the inaugural event last March.

Almost twice as many choirs will be taking part, with nine compared to five, to mean the showcase will take place over a weekend.

One of the organisers, Will Hackett, said: "Now spread across two days - March 3 and 4 - ChoirFest 2018 will welcome a host of community choirs from across the region, all coming together for a weekend culminating in an evening festival concert showcasing their unique tastes and talents through music."

ChoirFest was launched last year by Arun Arts, which runs the Regis Centre, with Bertsted Arts.

It was the first non-competitive event of its kind in the region to bring together local community choirs from across the area to share in their mutual joy and appreciation of music.

It gave them the chance to learn from each other and to highlight their individuality and unique

sound to the wider public.

THe full line-up of this year's participating choirs is: March 3 - Inspirations Community Choir (Littlehampton), RAFA 381 Branch Choir (Bognor Regis), THe Igloo Choir (Wickham, Hampshire) and Get Singing! (Chichester Festival THeatre Choir); March 4 - Art of Dance and Festival Adult Choir (South Bersted), Chi Choir (Chichester), THe Arun Sounds (North Bersted), Ditchling Singers (Lewes) and THe Bersted Community Choir (North Bersted).

"Registration to take part is now closed," said Will. "However, we encourage other choirs, as well as the general public, to be part of a festival by purchasing a ticket and coming to see one - or both - of the concerts."

Bandstand to stay on prom?

NEW STUDIES could lead to the bandstand staying on Bognor Regis seafront.

Arun District Council is looking at dropping its plan to move the structure from the promenade to Waterloo Square Gardens opposite the pier.

It had planned the move as part of its seafront delivery plan - to make room for traders - to the anger of many residents.

But an Arun spokeswoman said on Wednesday: "THe council is currently looking into the possibility that the bandstand could remain in its current location by reconfiguring the positions and shapes of the new stalls, which will provide permanent and temporary catering and other commercial pitches in that area of the promenade."

A report on the latest plans would be given to the council's cabinet before a final decision was made, she said.

Bognor Regis byelection candidates said on Tuesday the bandstand should stay.

THe three polling hopefuls who attended a public meeting this week agreed they would fight any move to relocate the Grade II-listed structure from the promenade.

Steve Goodheart, the Independent candidate for Arun's Marine ward, said: "As far as the bandstand is concerned, it's an iconic building. THe right place for it is on the seafront. It looks right and it is right.

"THe bandstand should be used as part of the regeneration of the promenade.

"THe bandstand just oozes style and it will be a really wrong move to move it."

For Liberal Democrat town council hopeful in the Hatherleigh ward, Francis Oppler the prospect of moving the bandstand after some 70 years on the

seafront was appalling.

"It's a bad idea and, if Arun try to move it, I'm quite certain it will fall apart and the cost of moving it will be extremely expensive. With all the engineers in the world checking it, it will not be known until they start to dismantle it how corroded the metal structure is.

"THey will then say it's too expensive to put back up away," he said.

Matt Stanley, who is standing for the Lib Dems in the district and town council bvelections, said: "Councillors are there to support the electorate and I will support the electorate. THe people I have been speaking to don't want the bandstand moved and so it won't be moved."

THe meeting at the Regis Centre on Tuesday was called by Bognor Regis Civic Society. Some 30 people, some of them existing councillors, attended the two hour event. Seven candidates are standing in the three byelections on February 22.

THey are: Arun district Marine ward - Kate Eccles (C), Steve Goodheart (I), Alison Sharples (L), Matt Stanley (LD).

Social media criticism has been made of Mr Enticott's conviction in 2016 of six charges including assault.

Labour councillor Jan Cosgrove said: "THe Labour Party was fully aware and discussed this issue with him. We were convinced by his answers and we believe he wants to give back to the community where he has lived for much of his life."

Council team again placed on shortlist for national awards LAND charges employees at Arun District Council have been shortlisted for two national awards.

THe staff members are in the running for the top prizes in the 2018 Land Data Local Land Charges Awards for Excellence.

THe categories in which they have been put forward are for providing the best customer experience and for customer satisfaction. THis is the second year in a row the department has been recognised in the honours.

Cllr John Charles, Arun's cabinet member for planning, said: "To hear that our land charges team have been

nominated again this year after great success at the awards in 2017 is testament to the hard work and dedication our officers display in offering a high level customer experience."

THe awards celebrate the work of council local land charges teams in England and Wales in the past year.

THe shortlist has been compiled from 268 entries and nominations put forward by solicitors, conveyancers and local land charges personnel.

By law, Arun has to keep a register which can be searched for details of any charges placed on properties to restrict their uses.

COMMUTERS will face delays as working hours on a cycle route from Bognor Regis are extended.

Highways officers have decided to increase the time during which construction work is carried out on the £2m combined footway and cycleway alongside the A259.

THis means that workmen will be on site from 8am to 4.30pm weekdays from next Monday compared to the current hours of 9.30am-3.30pm.

THe move has been made because of the need to make up time after fibre optic cables were found closer to the surface than expected from the extensive surveys carried out before the scheme started.

THe additional hours should mean the project still being completed this spring as originally scheduled in spite of the challenges. It began last autumn.

and infrastructure, said: "We would like to thank the public for their patience during the work.

"We realise the revised working times will have an impact for people going to and from work, school and so on.

"We apologise for this but the longer working hours will help us complete the project as soon as possible."

THe work for 4.5km between Flansham and Climping to connect with existing cycle routes will create a safer and more direct route for cyclists and pedestrians.

It is intended to reduce overall traffic congestion and encourage sustainable forms of transport.

THe combined footway and cycleway will also include new and improved lighting and crossing facilities at B2132 Yapton Road north of the junction with the A259 (Comet Corner) and Church Lane roundabout at the junction with the A259.

` Man arrested A WANTED Bognor Regis man has been arrested by police.

James Beaney was detained by officers after a member of the public spotted him at Brighton railway station and alerted Sussex Police on January 30.

THe police had earlier issued an appeal for information about Beaney's whereabouts.

Beaney, 41, has been charged with burglary at a house in Michel Grove, East Preston, on December 30. He has been remanded in custody to appear before Lewes Crown Court on February 23.

Estate agent BNP Paribas Real Estate is selling the property in the High Street for retail use.

As reported, the site has been empty since Post Office Ltd pulled out of it in November, 2016, to move into the nearby WH Smith.

Fair will overcome barriers to work ORGANISERS hope to repeat the success of a Bognor Regis skills showcase.

A record number of more than 200 people attended the most recent of the Arun Skills and Jobs Fair. THis was held in the town last September.

THe next is taking place from 10.30am1pm on February 22 at the Littlehampton Children and Family Centre at the Wickbourne Centre in Clun Road, Littlehampton.

THe fairs enable people to meet training centres and employers to break down the barriers to work such as interview skills, training and childcare options.

THey are held by West Sussex County Council's children and family centres with Bognor Regis and Littlehampton Jobcentre Plus.

One of the organisations which has taken part in previous skills and jobs fairs is Safe in Sussex. Its chief executive,

Sharon Howard, said: "THe jobs fair was a great opportunity for us to talk about our services and and for potential volunteers to come forward.

"It was an added bonus finding a new member of staff, too."

Cllr Stephen Hillier, the county council's cabinet member for children and young people, said the positive feedback from previous fairs had led to four being organised for this year.

"THere will be experts on hand to help with a range of worries, including confidence building and financial support. I would encourage anyone who is worried about work to not be afraid and come along."

THe next Arun Skills and Jobs Fair will be a special event in Bognor Regis for young people on April 24. Further events will be in Littlehampton in September and Bognor Regis two months later.

Lauriane's big day at palace A BARNHAM centre enabled a young woman to enjoy a golden date with royalty.

Lauriane Canadas visited St James's Palace in London to receive her gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

She was one of 22 young people from across West Sussex who met THe Earl of Wessex and celebrity presenter and broadcaster Ortis Deley.

Lauriane, 21, took part in her DofE at St Philip Howard Catholic School in Barnham. THe Littlehampton resident said: "DofE has been the most rewarding experience of my life so far.

"With the expedition came laughs and challenges. While volunteering with Girlguiding, I developed skills in leadership and communication, taking the opportunity to organise and run my own sessions.

"My physical challenge was to achieve my brown belt in karate, something which required a lot of commitment and determination.

"I've had such a fantastic experience completing all levels of DofE and I would love for every young person to have the same opportunity.

"DofE has made me a more rounded, confident person and is already serving me on the work placement I am currently doing as part of my mathematics degree."

During the gold award presentation, the Earl took the chance to congratulate the group from West Sussex and heard about their achievements during their 12-18

months of hard work and dedication.

THe young people who attended the ceremony also came from Bishop Luffa School and Slindon College among others. THey are among the 58 centres in the county which deliver DofE courses backed by West Sussex County Council.

Girls have ball with town club when they try rugby at training sessions YOUNG Felpham rugby player Daisy Evans wants to follow in the footsteps of an England star.

Daisy is among the female players who are enjoying their Sunday mornings at Bognor RFC. THe club are looking to encourage more girls to join in and Daisy, 11, is clear about the sport’s appeal – and the player she wants to be.

“I like playing sport and I watch a lot of rugby on TV,” she said. “I prefer playing against the boys because some of the girls can be soft.

"I like to get stuck into the tackles and I like mud as well.”

Daisy is a pupil at Downview Primary School in Felpham which Jess Breach attended a few years ago.

Jess grabbed the headlines in the world of female rugby last autumn when she scored 11 tries in her first two games for England.

“I would like to play for England like Jess does,” said Daisy, who plays as a winger. “I don’t worry about the tackles.”

Training sessions at the Hampshire Avenue club include warm-up exercises and practising with tackle bags and running.

Daisy is among the initial group of girls at the Hampshire Avenue club and is keen for other girls to take part as well.

“THey should just have a go and see if they like it,” she said. “It’s a chance to get stuck in and be part of a team.”

Away from the rugby pitch, she is an elite level gymnast who trains five times a week. She also enjoys netball, swimming, football and running.

“I like sport because I can be active, go up against people and show what I can do,” she added.

Bognor RFC is looking for more girls like Daisy to go along on Sundays. Training usually takes place from 10am-midday but the club’s fixtures page should be checked for confirmation.

Doug Millen, from the club, said: “We are looking for girls to join our U13 side. Any girls in Year 8 or below or invited to come and join us.

“U13 girls rugby is designed for girls in school years 6, 7 and 8. Most girls are trying rugby for the first time – and quickly loving it – while we have a few girls coming through from the mixed minis games.”

"THe U11 girls play 7-a-side contact games, which are suitable for beginners and experienced players.

For those who are U13, they play 12-a-side rugby.

“Our qualified coaches work with all levels of ability to develop rugby skills, team building and a great social experience," said Doug.

“Any girl who is a little bit older but still keen should still come along, Our links with local clubs’ girls teams means we will always find a place for any girl that comes to our club.

“RFU laws and regulations permit the

playing down for some players and age will never be a problem.”

Another of the girl rugby players is ten-year-old Grace Callaway. Her love of the sport began when she attended a rugby camp and won the most improved newcomer award.

She said: “I like the tackles and I like getting muddy. I play all over the pitch but I like playing scrum-half.

“I like going into scrums and trying to get the ball out.”

Grace, a pupil at St Mary’s School in Climping, said the practice sessions were also good fun.

“We run as fast as we can and as hard as we can at the bags. THat increases the speed at which we can run at the other players and tackle them to get the ball back.

“After we have played the matches, we look at the positives and the negatives and work on the negatives the next week,” she said.

Grace is also a keen gymnast and said both sports complemented each other. “Gymnastics is all about strength, speed and co-ordination and that applies to rugby as well,” she added.

THe rugby sessions for girls are free for the first month and then £10 a month or £2.50 a week.

` Parking bans PARKING bans are proposed for more schools around Bognor Regis.

West Sussex County Council wants to introduce or formalise enforceable 'School Keep Clear' markings outside the buildings.

THis will ensure that stopping on the markings from 8am-5pm weekdays is banned.

A consultation about the restriction is being carried out until February 22.

Tony Kershaw, the county council's director of law and assurance, said: "Yellow zigzag 'School Keep Clear' markings are used to prevent vehicles parking too close to school entrances, where they cause most obstruction and restrict visibility for motorists at these sensitive locations.

"Most 'School Keep Clear' markings are advisory, not well observed and cannot be legally enforced. THe proposed order will make these markings legally enforceable so action can be taken to keep them clear of parked cars."

Call to back town Euro links THE leader of the town's Twinning Association is calling for more people to join the group.

THe association is more important than ever according to the chairman, Heather Perrott, now that nearby town East Preston's group has dissolved.

Heather Perrott said in a speech at the annual general meeting last Wednesday that there was a need for more young people to join.

She said: "Twinning associations locally are regrettably finding it increasingly difficult to recruit active members. However, in the current uncertain times for our relations with Europe, the enduring grassroots friendships cultivated by town twinning are more important than ever.

"Carrying on our 'youth policy' of the last few years, and as we did last year in Weil am Rhein, we shall be inviting two or three selected young people from the Bognor area to join this trip to Trebbin - one of our German twin towns, completely free of charge.

"We see this as the only way to get young people interested in twinning, and hope that the friendships they make in our twin town will continue and grow. We are f able to continue

this youth programme thanks to the generosity of Bognor Regis Town Council in awarding us a grant."

Mrs Perrott also confirmed that Bognor Regis French twin town of Saint Maur des Fossés is undergoing change.

Earlier last year, the twinning association were informed that owing to insufficient funds forthcoming from the town, the Comité de Jumelage in St Maur would be dissolved at the end of 2017.

Mrs Perrott continued: "A group of people in St Maur who had always participated enthusiastically in the annual adult education exchange, organised here by the independent French adult education group, have formed a private association called 'Les Amis de Bognor Regis' so thanks to them these links will continue.

"We have always considered it important in the Twinning

Association to arrange social events to raise money and encourage contact and friendship among our own members here in Bognor.

"THe one challenge we face more than any other, and have been facing

,for years, is how to increase our active membership, particularity with a somewhat younger demographic. To this end we have produced some posters and flyers and the development of a new website."

Plenty of jobs for humans in future

Caring campaign CARE boss Simon McGee has launched a campaign to address the shortage of care workers around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Simon, pictured above left, owns and runs the area's office of home care provider Home Instead Senior Care.

He will be raising awareness, banishing pre-conceived ideas about what caring involves as well as informing people about just how rewarding working in care can be.

He said: "Over the coming months, our team will be sharing reflections and pictures taken throughout their day via social media to show how the role of a caregiver is perhaps a little different to how it might be perceived.

"We hope that the hashtag #youcancare, which will also offer tips and links, may also provide some support and solidarity to the hundreds of people caring for family members in the local area."

"THe hashtag #youcancare has been created to support the campaign. As well as sharing positive stories, the company will also be offering tips, advice and support for the hundreds of people caring for family members locally."

According to Skills for Care, the strategic body for workforce development in adult social care in England, there are about 90,000 vacancies in the social care sector at any given time.

THe country's ageing population has created a large requirement for care services and Simon said the national situation was reflected around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Home Instead, which specialises in care for older people in their own homes, is hoping to fill 60 jobs this year in order to keep pace with demand.

ROBOTS are arriving in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas - and a business expert says they could be good for their human residents.

Coastal West Sussex Partnership director Caroline Wood, pictured below, said businesses were starting to work with the automated creations.

THe issue of automation was causing a debate and prompted a national report last week which claimed one in five jobs in British cities was a role which was likely to shrink because of robots.

"When you think that the emphasis of organisations like CWS - which work with businesses, councils and other stakeholders - is to drive economic growth you can see how this may be a real challenge moving forward," she said.

"THe truth is that in CWS, which stretches from Adur across to Chichester, we already have a range of businesses that are doing great work in the field.

"In some ways, it is a good thing as it means that the local economy, I use 'local' as areas like Bognor Regis, Shoreham and Chichester are similar economically, is already adapting to new technology and diversifying into areas like the creative and digital sectors.

"But this does not mean that we can rest on our laurels.

"THis is why Coastal West Sussex is working with members and partner organisations to ensure that the workers of the future are equipped with the skills they and businesses need to thrive."

Because of this, Coastal West Sussex had placed an emphasis on developing science, technology, engineering and

maths provision in schools, colleges and universities, she said.

"We are also encouraging businesses to play their part, by promoting apprenticeship programmes and upskilling their existing workforce.

"All of this will mean that people in Worthing and the other areas in the Coastal West Sussex area will have access to better paid and more secure work something that is good for the economy as well," she added.

THe Centre for Cities Outlook 2018 report contained the claim about the risk to humans in work in what it said was the definitive economic health check of the 63 largest urban areas in the UK.

` Lucky residents FOUR Chichester area residents have won a charity lottery in the past six weeks.

THe winning streak has seen the punters scoop £1,000 each for their tickets in aid of the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

One of the winners had only been playing for two weeks when her number was selected.

Alan Maher, the hospice's lottery manager, said: "Congratulations to the winners and what a coincidence that Chichester has had such a lucky streak these past few weeks.

"THe money raised by the lottery makes a huge difference in helping us to care for the children and families that are supported by the hospice."

THe proceeds from the lottery pay for one in four days for the care the hospice provides.

Students put to test with mock exams MOCK exams provided real tension for Felpham Community College students.

THe Year 11 pupils celebrated all their hard work for their make-believe GCSEs at a formal presentation ceremony.

THey were nervous before the presentation ceremony and were able to open their results with the support of their form tutors, year leader and year manager.

Interim reports went home the same day to parents, with the final Year 11 consultation evening taking place the next day for parents to have the chance to raise any questions.

THe presentation proved a valuable opportunity for students, teachers and parents to identify areas for students to work on and motivate them for the final run-up to their GCSEs. One of the students, Karley-Marie Moore, pictured near right, said: "I am pleased and surprised. I got three 8s which I am really happy about.

"I worked hard and it is a great feeling.

I now know what I need to work on to get even better for the summer."

Andrew Fadera, another student, said: "I got a 6 in business which I am pleased with and I feel I could do much better in the summer with some of the rest of the results.

"THis is the push I need to put the final efforts in for the time we have left."

THe college arranged the ceremony to reflect the importance of the final year of key stage four education which it says is crucial for students.

Preparations for exams began last October.

THey included after-school revision sessions and at-home revision programmes.

THe exams took place at the end of last term and students planned, revised and worked hard for them.

Teachers wanted them to experience exactly what the fast approaching summer GCSE exam season would be like and the level of work and effort that students would be expected to complete.

Students and parents were given individual timetables at the end of November. All exams were completed in strictly authentic conditions.

Mark Anstiss, the college's headteacher, said: "Year 11 students are aware of how little time they have left to complete their GCSE education.

"We wanted to make the mock exams

as 'real' as possible to give students the final support and push they need to achieve the best they can.

"THe work they put in from now can shape their future.

"Giving the results within a formal presentation is an excellent way of giving students first-hand experience of how it feels to open a results envelope.

"THe hall was filled with nervous and excited students with many mixed emotions on show.

"Students should keep the end result in sight - feeling proud of themselves in August when they get their results."

Park's golf course to open FUN AND facts will join together when a golf course opens in Bognor Regis.

Golfers will be able to test their skills and their knowledge when the Wildforest Falls 18-hole adventure course opens next week.

THe attraction takes its inspiration from the beautiful and historic Hotham Park in which it sits and the surrounding area.

THe course has a number of life-size props which include bears, wolves, stags and wild boars. THey are complete with information boards to enable young and old to learn about each species as they play.

A beaver dam, complete with waterfall and fallen log putt-through and a tree stump vortex, are joined by a Hotham Clock Tower as some of the obstacles that players will have to negotiate at the themed attraction.

THey will be officially opened by Arun District Council chairman Jacky Pendleton and Phil Jones, managing director of ISS Lifestyle, at 11am on Tuesday.

Children under 12 who attend dressed as an animal will receive a free game of golf from 11am-1pm.

ISS Lifestyle has spent hundreds of thousands of pounds creating the golf course on the site of the park's former pitch and putt course. THe company has worked with the district council for more than two decades. It is investing heavily in key parks and outdoor recreation facilities.

Mr Jones said: "ISS has made the commitment to work together with Arun identifying further opportunities for investment and Wildforest Falls is another example of just that.

"Wildforest Falls is something new and

exciting which the whole family can get involved in. It is a great development for the whole community and visitors to the town and a real asset to Hotham Park.

"THis is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and partake in some friendly competition with family and friends."

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "THis new adventure golf course is great news for Bognor Regis, especially in the unique setting of Hotham Park.

"It will add to the host of the activities the park already has to offer and we're confident it will be a real hit with families and get their competitive spirits going."

` Town's weather ANDREW Goodwill is in the know whatever the Bognor Regis weather.

THe South Bersted resident has a weather station in the back garden of his house. He will be sharing details about each month's hottest, wettest and windiest days with Post readers.

Mr Goodwill said: "THe weather in this country is always interesting. It changes all the time. THe weather station wirelessly transmits the data to a receiver, like a tablet computer, in the house every ten minutes and it can be downloaded. It's brilliant to have those facts."

Company director Mr Goodwill, 55, of Ivy Lane, bought the weather station, pictured below, as a Christmas present with his partner, Margaret Huntingdon.

"We seem to be getting a lot more extreme weather conditions," he said, "with a lot more rain and wind."

Debbie's slimming to benefit skin charity f Lions Brian Cotton and Tony Harrison at their presentation

Lions club backs air ambulance TWO CHEQUES have been presented

by Chichester Lions Club to help keep the area's air ambulance flying after dark.

Club president Richard Cowell was joined by Lion Brian Cotton for the presentation of the first donation of £3,000 to the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

Fellow Lions Brian Cotton and Tony Harrison handed over the second cheque for £2,500.

THe proceeds came from two popular lotteries held by the club.

A Lions spokesman said: "THe air ambulance relies entirely on public donations to fund their vital lifesaving work and Chichester Lions are delighted to have been able to support

CHARITY shop manager Debbie Simmonds is slimming in Bognor Regis to get a bigger profile for a good cause.

Debbie has set herself the goal of losing 40lbs to mark this year's 40th anniversary of Debra UK. THe first month of her challenge saw her shed 11lbs to leave her happy with her progress so far.

"I'm pleased with where I've got to but the further I get, the harder it will get. I do miss chocolate and Chinese takeaways.

"But I wanted to do something because of the anniversary of Debra UK and to help to raise the profile and awareness

them. We are very grateful to everyone who supported the lotteries."

THe lotteries were part of a tenyear fundraising campaign for the air ambulance by Lions clubs across the south-east.

THe objective is to keep the air ambulance flying at night.

Launched in October, 2016, all 250 tickets in the first lottery were sold for the chance to win a flight in a Spitfire at the Boultbee Academy at Goodwood.

THe second lottery was launched in 2017 and its 210 tickets were drawn last September - again for the chance of a flight in a Spitfire. THe winner lives in Crawley and will get airborne this year.

Her colleagues have threatened Debbie with a spell in some stocks, with wet sponges to throw at her, if she fails to shift the pounds from her starting weight of 17st 13.25lbs.

One of the shop's volunteers weighs her at 9am each Monday to chart her progress. Debbie has been manager of the charity's shop since it opened in the High Street two-and-a-half years ago.

Debra UK supports the 5,000 people in the country with the skin condition, epidermolysis bullosa, and their families.

"It's life limiting and it's called the worst disease that people have never heard of," said Debbie. "It is a genetic condition which makes the skin so fragile it blisters and tears with the slightest touch."

She said she was always looking for donations for shoppers to look through.

"People travel from Brighton and London to look through the charity shops here. THere are a lot here and they like going round them all in one day."

Naked truth about wearing only the bare minimum I THINK I may have mentioned last week that I am doing a psychology course in Cornwall at the moment. We are all based in Porthleven and I feel like I am sharing the big brother house (If you watch that kind of thing!).

Basically, we are all sharing a massive house, cooking, training and running together every day. It’s amazing. So far, so good. No clashes of personalities yet, and it seems that everyone is just so lovely. I guess there is a synergy as we are all here learning about a subject that we love. THe group is from all over the world. Dubai, Australia, Lithuania, Texas, Austria and UK! (Me).

I always find it so fascinating to get to know people from different nationalities. One of the women I have spent quite a bit of time with is Austrian

and she’s been telling me about her government sending people to health retreats free of charge to maintain good health! How amazing is that?

Apparently, preventative health is massive in Austria right now and eating and being healthy is a huge industry. Not only did they provide this service, they also made a special healthy eating, in season vegetables and fruit cookery book that was given free to every household in the country if requested. THen we started laughing about a time I was with all my family skiing in Austria, and we entered a sauna in our hotel with bikinis on and shorts and got really frowned upon, as everyone else was naked. Why is it though, that us Brits are so prudish about being naked?

Apparently, according to Ute (my new In Austrian bestie!) when you enter a spa and sauna area at resorts and hotels, you will typically see signs reminding you that this is a “textilfrei” zone: clothes and bathing suits are verboten.

Austrians take their clothes-free spa-going very seriously, but it comes from a very different mindset than English “nudity”: that refers more to what you’re showing off, while the Austrian concept is all about textile-free for hygiene, health and comfort. Austrians know that sweating into bathing suits (often made of nylon, polyester, etc.) in high-heat-and-humidity environments traps bacteria, and is simply not good for you. So, in Austrian spas, young and old, male and female, relax clothes-free together.

THis can cause puritanical panic attacks for tourists such as us Brits, but you’re encouraged to bring a towel (to protect against hot seats), and these can be draped strategically. And each spa is different: some are 100 per cent textile-free; some, in addition to larger no-clothes areas, have

separate women’s and men’s facilities. But after a few days of staring and blushing, most tourists relax into their birthday suits. THey may soon find themselves singing and drumming in a lively Sauna Aufguss event, with dozens of other happy, textilefree people!

SNOWDROPS may well have been sighted, but the February freeze seems to be enveloping us and thus it seemed an opportune moment to sample some of Majestic's winter selections.

Majestic's Chichester warehouse is always a joy to visit as knowledgeable and extremely affable staff, afforded the appellation of wine gurus, are happy to advise and sample wine with customers.

One suggestion I followed was that of an unusual mix of two grape varieties in the form of a Symbiose Piquepoul Sauvignon Blanc 'Cuvée Florence' 2016 Côtes de THau on offer at £7.49 if one of six bottles as is the Majestic way.

Symbiose means harmony between two elements and this wine manifestly

delivers, being a lovely fusion of two grapes with green notes of the Sauvignon Blanc added to the lightness of touch of Piquepoul.

Dry and fruity with tropical fruits on the palate, it displays punchy expressions of lime and crisp sharp citrus and is full of flavour and would pair well with a dish like seafood risotto.

Next, two other white wines on offer for an outlay of £9.99 caught my eye, beginning with the Louis Jadot 2016 Mâcon-Villages 'Les Roches Blanches'.

Louis Jadot has been winemaking since 1859 and the name is synonymous with quality and this Southern Burgundian Chardonnay is decidedly soft, slightly creamy with crisp apple characters and a hint of lemon fruit.

Vinified in stainless steel tanks in order to extract the maximum floral and fruity aromas, this finely balanced unoaked wine should be drunk chilled and young!

Idem THe King's Favour 2016 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from much-lauded winemaker Brent Marris of noble heritage is a mere snip at the offer price and is precise, yet powerful with complex aromas of blackcurrant and passionfruit and mineral highlights.

Lime and grapefruit zest characterise this beautifully balanced wine along with lemongrass and gooseberry rendering it a wine of Sancerre-style elegance and an ideal accompaniment to fresh oysters or delicate white fish. A great buy at this price!

As an advocate of Rioja Reserva as an underrated and especially good buy, I was intrigued to compare a younger Rioja Crianza with a Rioja Reserva from the same makers.

THe 2014 Cune Rioja Crianza at an offer price of £7.49 proved to be nicely balanced, medium-bodied with a red berry aroma and hints of chocolate, coffee and liquorice.

Fresh Crianza matches well with Tapas and a year in American and French oak casks creates a lightish red with wood, vanilla, forest fruit and spice and a most agreeable peppery finish.

Dry, but fruity, hints of tobacco make this an eminently quaffable Rioja which I wholeheartedly commend to you! For an offer price of £9.99, the Cune Rioja Reserva of 2013 vintage has a toasty nose and exudes dark fruits, vanilla, plum and subtle spice with a lingering finish - however, on a personal note, value

for money would lead me to select the Crianza!

My final red selection was that of a 2015 Paso Creek Cabernet Sauvignon of Californian provenance on offer at £14.99. A cherry and pepper bouquet leads to dark fruit, spice, smokiness and

well-blended oak and a pleasingly dry finish and this wine is earthy and bold and improves as it opens fully - one worth decanting!

One to pair with lasagne or Moroccan lamb tagine and a wine worthy of your attention. A bientôt!

Community News & Views HUNDREDS of students across West Sussex will see their school transport costs increase.

About 300 of the sixth form and college pupils will be affected by the change. It applies to students where West Sussex County Council arranges their transport - likely to be by coach, minibus or taxi. THe charge will increase from £427 to £600 a year.

Students with special educational needs and disabilities from families on a low income will be unaffected and will continue to have their charges waived.

THe county council is encouraging students who will be paying more to find out if they qualify for a bursary to help them to meet the increase.

THe decision to push up the charge was taken after a consultation. Cllr Richard Burrett, the county council's cabinet member for education and skills, said: "I would encourage students and families to find out if they are eligible for a bursary if they are worried about funding this increase.

"Each college and school administers a 16-19 Bursary Fund to help with education costs, including transport, for students from families on a low income."

It had been a hard decision to increase the charge, Cllr Burrett said. "Unfortunately, we are simply unable to keep subsidising transport for students to the extent we have done in the past. It is not sustainable for us.

"We acknowledge we could have done more to keep the cost charged over the last few years in-line with increases in equivalent journeys and in line with the amount paid by students in other counties."

THe council provides assistance with transport to eligible pupils in the county but it does not have a legal responsibility to provide free transport for post-16 students. Most students walk, cycle or pay for their own travel to school or college.

PUPILS from Tangmere Primary Academy have left their mark on a new centre for people with dementia.

THe academy's school council members received a tour of the hub being created by the Dementia Support charity in Tangmere.

THey were invited to sign one of the unfinished walls, pictured above, for an unusual and fun touch to their visit.

A Dementia Support spokesman said: "Tangmere Primary Academy will always be part of the hub and if, in the years to come, some renovation work is done, people will find their messages of goodwill under the plasterboard."

THe link with the academy is part of Dementia Support's work to raise awareness about the medical condition.

THe connection began with 50 pupils from Years 5 and 6 attending Dementia Friends sessions by dementia champion Peter Haydn Jones and Sue Craig, Dementia Support's community

relationships co-ordinator.

Dementia Friends is a national initiative by the Alzheimer's Society to teach people what it is like to live with dementia.

THe academy's visit took place after the sessions and saw ten pupils and two staff members given a tour around the building by the contractor's construction site manager, Tim Brown, and senior surveyor Mark Benfold, pictured below.

THey showed how skills like maths are used for a building.

Dementia Support chief executive Sally Tabbner said: "THis is an exciting time in the charity's ongoing development and working with Tangmere Primary Academy pupils is not only significant socially.

"But it will contribute to our vision of a society where dementia is fully understood and accepted, enabling people living with dementia to be fully supported throughout the whole of their journey."

A POEM about Chichester Cathedral has been composed by Brian Farrelly from the Isle of Wight.

Mr Farrelly said: "I worked at Bracklesham Bay Pontins holiday camp in 1966 and fell in love with Chichester. My son, Ruarie, lives at Pagham with his wife, Emily, plus Dylan, three, and Dolores, two. I now live in Binstead, near Ryde, with my wife of 44 years,Barbara. I love English history and classical poetry. My hobbies include reading and composing poetry. It was listening to a peal of bells September last that the thought struck me of the passage of time, and how swiftly we age, but not the bells they go on forever."

THere is no police presence on the Manhood area. THe number of times we are being told to the contrary is unbelievable.

I have spoken to officers who apologise for not being allowed to come off the A27.

THe cutbacks have left us

with no cover. Would she care to come down for a guided tour of speeding vehicles, drink-driving and anti-social behaviour?

How much longer can this be allowed to go on? Should the commissioner like to come and discuss this with several ex-officers with in excess of 80 years' service I would love to arrange the meeting.

THe Selsey Community Forum has been given the funding from a countywide scheme to encourage residents to become involved with their surrounding area.

THe money has been awarded for two projects. One - for £2,448 will pay for further survey works to enable the development of flood prevention activity in the town.

THe other grant is for £12,240 to survey various water levels around the town. THis will enable landowners to be advised about the depth of their ditches and where improvements need to be made for flood prevention.

THe money has come from the latest rounds of Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund awards.

A total of 12 projects have benefited from nearly £90,000-worth of support from the West Sussex County Council-backed scheme to help communities to act against flooding.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "Operation Watershed started in 2013, since when it has helped communities to do great work and make a real difference.

"It has also just received strong endorsement through a questionnaire sent to groups which have received funding.

"Asked on a scale of one to five how well the project met their expectations, with five being 'extremely well', 75 per cent of community groups recorded a score of four or above, with the majority - 54 per cent - recording a top score of five.

"Crucially, 78 per cent believed the community interest or activity involved in the project would be sustained."

Among the other projects to be awarded funding was a £32,846 scheme by Apuldram Parish Council for riverbank drainage improvements for Apuldram Lane South and Church Lane.

Initiatives in Amberley, Ansty and Staplefield, Fittleworth, Henfield and Stedham also gained grants from the fund.

THe winner of the prize draw for the survey was Lavant Parish Council.

PORTUGUESE classical guitarist Andre Ferreira, pictured above, will be playing a recital in Bognor Regis next week.

Andre will be performing at the West Sussex Guitar Club's next meeting at 7.30pm on February 17 at the Regis School of Music, 46 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

His recital will include works by Carlos Seixas, Johann Sebastian Bach, Manuel Maria Ponce, Ferdinand Rebay and Mauro Guilliani.

Andre started plating guitar at the age of 12. Today, he aspires to motivate music lovers and the younger generation to cultivate the art of classical guitar.

He is taking his master's degree with Paulo Pegoraro at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria.

He has also taken part in masterclasses with internationally acclaimed teachers such as Alvarro Pierri, Antigone Goni, Carlo Marchione, David Russell, Paul O'Dette and Ricardo Gallen.

Andre is the winner of several prizes and competitions, such as the XI Prizes to the Musical Excellent Mans Futuro 2016 in Spain and the 2017 European scholarship to the Volterra Project in Italy.

He has played concerts in several European countries such as Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Austria. He can be heard on his CD Sonata, which was released last year.

Square remains important area in the town Site has remained open for more than 200 years WHEN you go to Waterloo Square what do you see? An open space providing entertainment facilities, or do you see or know of the history of the area? THere was a covenant laid down in the 1800s so that the view from East Row and Hothamton Place to the sea would not be obstructed and a fine of £5,000 per acre could be imposed.

Sadly, the buildings of Sir Richard Hotham, which faced the square, have long since gone, but there is still a large amount of history in the area.

Initially, the area was laid out and named Hothamton Field, and contained a number of fishermen’s cottages. On a plan of 1835 it was shown as Waterloo Row. However, it clearly showed the ‘vacant ground’ in the centre, which was not to be built on. Daniel Wonham started his developments in 1820 houses were built around the field displaying a typical style with canopies and trelliswork.

By the 1870s, the population of the town had increased to 1,800 but the buildings were still principally private residents. Many of these premises in the 1900s were to be rented out during the summer months at one time for 11 guineas per week, I wonder how much they would charge today?

For many years, there were sheep or cattle grazing on the three-acre site and these could

be seen on many of the early postcards or photographs. Also, it was possible for a time to pick basketfuls of mushrooms on this field.

One of the cottages was used to invite nobility to partake of home-brewed beer and by the 1870s these premises had been licensed and eventually became known as THe Waterloo Inn, which is still there today.

However, if one were to stop and date some of the main buildings around the Square, it becomes evident that, while much of the building was completed at the time of the major developments in the 1820s, 100 years later, in the 1920s, more major building constructions had begun, by which time the population of Bognor had grown to 11,490.

THe square contained the town’s fire station for a number of years from 1874 until it was closed in 1899 before being converted into a tearoom and then a garage. THere have always been numerous tearooms and restaurants around Waterloo Square, including the strangely named People’s Dining and Tea Rooms, which can be seen in photographs from 1903.

In 1921, Bognor Regis Urban District Council purchased the land for £1,000 and, within four years, there was a major transformation of the area. During the same period there was the development of a bowling green, where

the pavilion had to be placed below eye level, so that it did not obstruct the view. THis was also opened in 1925, alongside the sunken gardens that were built at the same time.

When the council decided to build the toilets and information bureau, they had first to obtain permission from the covenanters.

While it was granted, they were not to be allowed to obstruct the view.

In 1928 it was decided to move the drinking fountain from the promenade and place it at the eastern corner of the square where it remained until its removal in 1956.

On the east side of the square facing the High Street, the Methodists bought a site for their new church, costing £10,650. It was officially opened on April 1, 1925, moving them from their previous site in the High Street.

Another part of the regeneration in the 1920s was a major construction coming to its completion, that of the building of the Hotham Club.

THis was formally opened in 1928 and annual subscriptions were being offered at £2.2.0d. (£2.10) for town members and £1.1.0d. (£1.05) for country members.

THe Hotham Club remained in these premises until 1972 when it was taken over by the RAFA Club as its new headquarters, having outgrown its ex-RAF hospital hut, from Tangmere, in London Road. THe headquarters cost £21,000 partly being covered by subscription, the outstanding balance to be covered by loans and further subscriptions over a number of years.

THe branch had been formed in 1945 when members used to meet in local public houses before moving into London Road. THe MP for

Chichester, athlete Christopher Chataway, opened the impressive premises. It contained a Battle of Britain bar and numerous meeting rooms for its members.

Photographs taken during the 1950s show various aspects of Waterloo Square including the prominent Town Information Bureau facing the pier. In the 1960s there was an entertainment marquee situated on the corner of the square, which had needed the removal of the drinking fountain to a temporary holding area in the council yard, within Hotham Park.

Waterloo Square today contains many interesting areas, including the town weather station that is monitored daily for cloud, visibility, wind and rain. THe sunshine records for the town are obtained separately.

Today, Waterloo Square has plenty to offer the seaside holidaymaker, with food and drink premises and, of course, the very popular mini-golf course.

For others, there is the well-used bowling green and also the various gardens both old and new that have been created to allow the weary traveller a place to sit and listen to the sounds of the children, or the seagulls as they fly overhead. It is also possible to have your palm read and sometimes there are various stands selling items of local interest or paintings from the local art groups.

Whatever use you make of Waterloo Square, it is certainly at the heart of our town and providing a much-needed area of either respite or entertainment for holidaymakers and also the numerous residents who take a stroll along the prom and have a cup of tea before returning home.

PBs a-plenty plus a course record PostSport - Chichester 10k hailed a success NEARLY 1,500 runners took to the tarmac of Goodwood motor circuit for the annual Chichester Priory 10k.

In what was the second year on the revised course, competitors made their way around county roads before completing one circuit of the famous course.

Despite the near-freezing temperatures, the racing was quick - and two men made it home quicker than the sought after 30 minute mark.

After Highgate’s Andy Maud led from the start, Aldershot’s Richard Allen edged the London-based runner out in the final sprint to record a new course record of 29min 45sec.

THe top female finisher was Coventry Godiva’s Katrina Wootton, who came home in just over 33 minutes.

THere was also success for local runners, with 35 members of the Bognor Regis Tone Zone completing the course.

Peter Lee was the club's first runner over the line with a really strong race time of 37:17,while the club's first female was Kari Mack, who clocked in with 39:54.

In total, seven club runners ran their personal best times for this distance.

Neil Pacey took over a minute from his to

finish in 51:20, but was still disappointed with the result.

He said: "Unfortunately, my left calf tightened and cramped at 7km, "I would have not only broken my personal goal of a sub-50 but finished around 48 minutes if it hadn't.

"I'm pleased with the run but will now need to find another 10k race to try again."

An overjoyed Stan Mack, who is in the middle of training for his first marathon in April, managed to slice three minutes from his best to finish in 45:21, while Gareth Stemp beat his by two minutes finishing in 47:42.

THe others were Karen Vilday (52:36), Martin Playford (52:55), David Sinclair (54:03) and Jo York (1:08:35).

Along the coast at an equally cold Portsmouth, Derek Natoli was the first Tone Zone member home in the coastal half marathon in 2 hours 1 minute closely followed a minute later by Jackie Williamson.

Ben Leney (2:05) and Sam Yates, 2:19, both ran their best times. Sam, who took an amazing seven minutes from her best, said "I'm so happy with my PB, it's only taken me eight years."

RUGBY: Bognor RFC welcome Ellingham & Ringwood to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2pm). THe Purple and Greens, who are currently second in Hampshire One, had their match last weekend postponed due to the wet weather.

CHICHESTER RFC's injury hit squad have a week off to lick their wounds after losing their fourth match in five games.

THe Blues' tough start to 2018 continued last weekend when they returned back from THurrock empty-handed. If there has been a bright spot to the games in recent weeks, it was the performances of a number of youngsters who have made their debuts.

Among those who performed well in the 20-10 loss in Essex were Westbourne House student scrum half Fin Bamber, winger Jack Green and Ed Hounsel at full back.

With a number of seasoned pros starting to make their way back to full fitness, there are hopes that Chi, who sit fourth in the London Division One South, will return to winning form when they return to action at home to Chobham on February 17 (2pm).

Speaking after the THurrock loss, Paul Colley, the club's director of rugby, said: “It was a long and tough day. We probably didn’t quite play to our level but, even with the

changes, we created some real opportunities.

It wasn’t our day.”

Delays on the way to the match meant preparation was not ideal but the Blues started extremely well, dominating the first 15 minutes. THurrock, though, scored first, crossing after a series of drives.

THe Blues hit back. With Nick Blount dominating the lineout, big Jon Lindsay powered over from the back of a well-worked drive. THe conversion was missed to make the score 7-5 at half time.

Chi came out fired up after the break. After five minutes disaster struck, and fly half Adrian Lynch was sinbinned for a marginal high tackle. THe Blues held on, only conceding a penalty while down to 14 players. But THurrock picked up momentum and scored a breakaway try to take them into a 17-5 lead.

THe visitors hit back when the returning Chris Johnson burst through the home defence to reduce the deficit. But a penalty late on denied them a bonus point.

Liverpool up next for Chi City Ladies in the FA Women's cup

Chi's brave FA Vase run ends CHICHESTER City's focus is firmly on promotion after the side cruelly lost out in the last 16 of the FA Vase.

Miles Rutherford's side pushed 1874 Northwich all the way as they competed in the latter stages of the national knockout competition for the first time.

But, despite an excellent performance, Chi conceded a last minute goal to the Cheshire side which sent them to a 1-0 defeat and ended their fairytale run.

It meant their dozens of fans and officials completed the 480 mile round trip from Witton Albion's home wondering and wishing what could have been.

But with City still firmly in the hunt for the SCFL Premier title, Rutherford said the better team won on the day.

He said: “I’ve got no complaints whatsoever. We’ve got beaten by a very, very good side. THey kept the ball, they made us work hard.

"We had some nerves and some players that hadn’t played in that sort of game before. It’s obviously a learning curve for them."

THe scoreline could have been even greater were it not

for the form of Chi goalkeeper Ant Ender. He made two or three excellent saves to repel the attackers from the North West Counties Premier side.

Chi did have chances, Kieran Hartley hitting the woodwork from 30 yards and Lorenzo Dolcetti spurning two chances.

But it was 1874's quality which finally won through.

Rutherford said: “If Northwich played down in our area they would be playing a lot higher than the county league. From one to eleven, I didn’t see a bad player.

"THey had two players in the middle of the park who could play two, three leagues higher than they are at the moment."

Chi's disappointing week continued on Tuesday when they suffered a 2-1 reverse at Haywards Heath in the fourth round of the Peter Bentley Cup. Dave Herbert put City in the lead before two late strikes for the Blues saw them crash out of a second cup competition in the space of four days.

Chi, who are still third in the SCFL Premier, host East Preston tomorrow (3pm) looking to keep up the pace in the title race.

CHICHESTER City Ladies have netted themselves a dream FA Cup tie with Super League giants Liverpool as they won through to the last 16 of the prestigious competition.

THe FA Women's Premier League side sealed the home tie after defeating Oswestry-based THe New Saints on penalties last weekend.

Striker Cherelle Khassal scored the equaliser to take the match to deciding spot kicks.

And it was Jess Lewry who scored the winning penalty which means Chi are one of only four teams from the third tier to win through to the fifth round of the competition.

Chi, who have reached this stage for the first time, now have just over a week to ready Oaklands Park for Liverpool's visit on February 18 (2pm).

With the Reds currently third in the Women's Super League, Chi will have their work cut out - but everyone is looking forward to a special day.

Chi manager Matt Wright confirmed that skipper Emma Alexandre is also recovering after being badly injured in the cup win.

Tickets, priced £5 adults, £4 concessions and £2 children, are available in advance from Chichester College Sports Centre.

Lions seal Senior Cup semi spot Ne

PAGHAM are just one step away from running out at a Premier League ground after their ten men downed Horsham in the quarter final of the Sussex Senior Cup. THe Lions have been in fine form all season.

With three months of the season to go, they remain in contention on three fronts.

Remarkably, this includes the Sussex Senior Cup, after the Lions overcame all the odds to defeat Isthmian South side Horsham 3-0 on Tuesday night.

THe victory, achieved with ten men for 70 minutes, was sealed with two goals from

Callum Overton and a stunning strike from the edge of the box by Dan Simmonds.

It was even more remarkable for the performance of keeper James Binfield, who made four or five top class saves as well as repelling a penalty.

It means Pagham now go into the last four along with fellow SCFL Premier side Saltdean United, Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s and Crawley Town.

Win in the semi finals, and a May date at THe Amex stadium awaits the Nyetimber Lane side.

forward to, playing Chichester City in the final of the RUR Cup. Before that, though, thoughts must turn to the league, where the Lions are sixth in a very competitive fight for the top spots.

With applications and ground-grading not necessary to seal promotion, those at Nyetimber Lane have a difficult decision to make on whether Pagham are ready to take the step to the next level.

Chairman Tony Shea said: "I'm delighted with the progress that has been made and big thanks must be made to everyone involved with the club.

"We must think long and hard, though, if the club, the players and the management team are ready for promotion. I'm not prepared to go up if we lose a large number of players.

"If we keep progressing then we will have those conversations, but so far I haven’t had those conversations with them."

First, however, they must take care of things on the pitch. THe next four days sees Pagham have two very winnable games from which they must take maximum points if they are to close the gap on the sides above them.

Tomorrow, Worthing United visit Nyetimber Lane (3pm) before East Preston make the short trip along the coast on Tuesday (7.45pm). Both sides are in the bottom six. And with eight teams in contention for the top two spots anything less than two wins would be a let down.

Bailey's young guns seek to end slump SELSEY are seeking their second win in six as Steve Bailey's young side look to climb the SCFL Division One table.

After a strong start to the season, the Blues have hovered around mid-table for much of the campaign and currently sit eighth.

THe past six games have summed up Selsey's mixed season so far - winning two, drawing two and losing two.

THe most recent of those reverses came last weekend when the Blues slumped to a surprise 2-0 defeat to Oakwood at the High Street Ground.

Selsey had no answer to the visitors, who sealed a clinical performance with a goal in either half.

Bailey's side have a chance to find some

form starting tomorrow when they welcome Mile Oak to the High Street (3pm).

Sitting two places and seven points ahead of the hosts, the Brighton-based team still have an outside chance of a top-three finish by the end of the season.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham face a trip to Upper Beeding tomorrow in the second round of the division two cup (1.30pm).

THe wet weather has not been too kind to the Sids, who have played just twice so far in 2018.

Fellow SCFL Division Two side Bosham welcome Montpelier Villa to Walton Road in the same competition (1.30pm) having not played competitively for a fortnight.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce vows his team will keep on fighting until the end of the campaign although he said the Rocks' lack of luck means he will not be placing bets any time soon.

THe Nyewood Road faithful's wait for a home league win rolls on after their side were defeated 2-0 at home to Truro City.

In a match that was dominated by an injury to goalkeeper Dan Lincoln during the Cornish side's opener, Bognor were unlucky to lose a close encounter by what appeared to be a convincing margin.

THe woes were heightened when new central striker Stefan Ljubicic was sent off just an hour into his debut for the club - which means he misses the next three matches.

As Pearce told the Post: "I'm definitely not going to any casinos at the moment."

It is a rare moment of light relief in a serious situation. And Pearce is well aware that being unlucky is not much help in a relegation fight.

THe defeat means the Rocks are now seven points adrift from safety.

With a crucial trip to fourth bottom Chippenham Town coming tomorrow (3pm), followed by a midweek home match against Welling United on Tuesday (7.45pm), the time is right for the Rocks to start picking up points.

Pearce, though, is refusing to set his side a target in terms of results.

He said: "We will continue to try and win every game - that's all we can do.

"We have drawn 12 matches and no one can argue that we did not deserve to win more than half of those.

"If we would have done that,then the club's situation would not be as bad. THat's how tight this division is.

"Most games are tight so we will keep fighting, working hard and trying to improve until it's mathematically impossible for us to stay in the league."

Bognor's unlucky streak has been in part because of the number of players missing due to injury. Corey Heath, Chad Field, James Crane and Ollie Pearce remain absentees from the next two matches. THe absence of Ljubicic for a suspension is also a blow - given that Pearce spent four months trying to add a towering central striker to lead the line, only for him to be suspended within an hour.

Pearce said he's tried to sign three players this week as a replacement but none have committed. If there's a bright spot it's the immediate return of Lincoln, which will save defender Gary Charman from revising his role against Truro between the sticks.

Pearce said: "THey are all big games when you're second bottom of the league. I'm confident we will give a good account of ourselves. You cannot blame the players as they are working as hard as they can. And it doesn't matter who we have in charge of the club as we just can't get the players in."

Lincoln set to return after injury

HE MIGHT be battered and bruised but Bognor's number one is fighting to be fit for the Rocks' crucial double header this week.

Dan Lincoln made national headlines when he shared images of his injuries sustained during last weekend's 2-0 defeat to Truro City on social media.

THe match was halted for more than 30 minutes as paramedics treated the keeper and made sure he sustained no long-term damage to his neck or spine.

But. after being taken from the ground on a spinal board, Lincoln was treated and appears to have made a full recovery in hospital - even posting images sat on a bed with a thumbs up on social media.

He is now in line to make his 100th appearance for the club tomorrow when the Rocks visit Chippenham Town.

Pearce, who visited Lincoln in hospital immediately after Saturday's match, said: "He's bruised but at least nothing is broken and he should be fit for Saturday. At the time, you can't afford to take risks as he took a hell of a clattering.

"He's improving every day and, if he continues to make the progress, he has done so far he will be available for the weekend."

WELL that was a difficult game to take!

THe loss to Truro was perhaps one of the most disappointing of the campaign so far - we did not deserve to get beaten 2-0.

Once again we dominated possession but the match just highlighted a major problem with the team at the moment - we haven’t got enough goal scorers in the first 11.

THe lads are working extremely hard but we're just unable to score. And then when we do concede it's even harder to take as quite often those chances are preventable Both goals on Saturday fall into this category and it's time that we started cutting those mistakes out.

In terms of scoring, the problem I think comes down to personnel. Some footballers just seem to get lucky and score goals.

Last season we had James Fraser in the side who just seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

I also have a knack of getting lucky with a few strikes, whether they bundle in off a thigh or a knee - a goal is a goal however it is scored.

At the moment we are relying too much on well-crafted individual strikes or good team goals. THere’s been very few tap ins for us this year which perhaps explains why we have not scored that many.

THe signing of Stefan Ljubicic, the youngster from Brighton & Hove Albion, is a good addition.

In training, he has showed some good touches, he looks powerful and wants the ball.

It's always hard when you are a young player. THe biggest culture shock for men's football is the physicality and everyone coming into this level very quickly realises that every game is a battle.

Once Stefan settles in and realises that he will have an impact as he is clearly a talented footballer who will only improve with games.

THe hardest thing for me is sitting on the bench.

In recent weeks, I've been on the sidelines with Chad Field and Ollie Pearce.

All three of us live and breathe the club and all three of us would love to be out there doing our bit to help us out of the current position.

THere is some good news in that Dan Lincoln looks like he will be fit for tomorrow.

With the neck you always have to be extremely careful which is why the paramedics took their time.

But when he fell, Dan rolled five or six times, which was a good sign that he did not suffer from that instant impact.

Hopefully, I will not be too far behind either.

Next Wednesday, I finally go in for surgery in my shoulder.

I don't know how long it will be before I'm back just yet. THe surgeon said he needs to take a good look before making any guarantees.

But I hope it will be three or four weeks in a sling and then six to eight before I play again.

It's been a long wait and I just want it done now - especially when you see the games that we have coming up. THe next week is a big one as we have two games in four days. THe squad need games almost as much as we need points.

THere's only so much you can do in training. Last year, we tended to have two games every week which meant that players could forget about mistakes very quickly.

With training twice a week now there's more time to dwell on things which didn't go right and less time to get any consistency.

I think everyone is looking forward to the two games as it gives a chance to get points on the board. It's difficult to do that when you only play four times a month.

Being honest, given where we are we need six points. We have been better away from home than at home so hopefully a good result at Chippenham will stand us in good stead for Welling.
