Crime increase sparks anger RISING crime rates have been criticised by a Felpham councillor.

Cllr Paul English said latest figures for Sussex Police showed the area's residents were suffering badly from a surge in offences.

THe statistics show that 510 crimes in Felpham were recorded by police in the year from November 1, 2016 - an increase of 211, or just over 60 per cent, on the previous year.

Cllr English said: "THese figures are quite horrendous. THey are quite terrible in comparision with a number of other areas. It does give rise to a great deal of worry about what is happening since we have lost our police community support officers.

"THese figures are the worst I have seen in all the years I have been coming here.

"Every time we come to a meeting, the police are changing their system - and to

me it's not getting better.

"Hopefully, as we are paying a great deal more money in the next financial year to the police, we will see a dramatic improvement when these figures next come out."

Cllr English, an Arun district councillor for Felpham East, highlighted several of the statistics when he raised his concern.

THey included incidents of domestic abuse up 23 to 83, public place violent

crime up 26 to 85, burglary up 29 to 47 and vehicle crime up 72 to 88.

His comments at Tuesday's meeting of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee of parish, district and county councillors were backed by Cllr Chris Allington, chairman of Barnham Parish Council.

Lib Dems achieve double win in town

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT Matt Stanley has claimed two seats from the Conservatives in Bognor Regis.

Mr Stanley boosted his party's presence on Arun District Council and Bognor Regis Town Council with his double successes in last week's by-elections.

He has replaced the late Conservative councillor Dougal Maconachie in the Marine ward of both councils.

His triumphs took the Lib Dems to seven seats on Arun to consolidate their position as its second biggest party behind the Tories' 43 councillors.

On the town council, the Lib Dems now have six of the 16 seats as its biggest party but without a majority after last THursday's polling.

Felpham resident Mr Stanley said: "It was a real privilege to be selected to represent the Marine ward community as their town and district councillor.

"I'm really looking forward to getting involved and being the strong voice the residents need.

"THe Conservatives have now lost the past two district by-elections. So, I hope they are hearing loud and clear what Bognor Regis is saying. Our community wants greater consultation and engagement on the issues that affect them. THey want their opinions listened to and acted upon.

"THe residential developments in Pagham and Bersted are perfect examples.

THe communities there have raised many legitimate issues and the Conservatives at Arun just appear to be ignoring them.

"During the campaign, one of the major concerns for the Marine ward that I spoke

to was Arun's Hothamton linear park plan.

"For £3.5m, they are planning to reduce the greenspace, reduce the car parking space, build two blocks of flats and potentially lose the health centre. How does this add any value?

"Regeneration needs to work for the people of Bognor. I believe our community must be allowed meaningful input and their views must be respected. THat's what I intend to give them."

In the third by-election of the night, the town council Hatherleigh ward vacancy was taken by Labour's Damien Enticott from the Conservatives' Dan Barnes after his resignation.

THe result has doubled Labour's number of seats on the council to two. But all three polls saw low turnouts. Only about one in five electors voted.

Here are the full results: Arun District Council - Marine ward: Matthew Stanley (LD) 309 votes, Alison Sharples (L) 252, Katherine Eccles (C) 242, Steve Goodheart (I) 141.

THe turnout was 20.08 per cent.

WORSHIPPERS at a Bognor Regis church will be among the few in the country able to watch the live funeral of one of the most famous evangelists.

St Mary Magdalene Church is one of just a handful in the UK that is livestreaming the funeral of Billy Graham.

THe screening will take place from 5pm tonight (Friday) at the Bersted Street church. Its vicar, the Rev Tim Crook, said many members of his congregation had reason to honour the American evangelist as they, or members of their family, came to faith through Billy Graham's preaching.

"I'm not ashamed to say that 'Big

Billy' has been one of my heroes.

"It is our privilege to stand shoulderto-shoulder with his ministry.

"We attempt today to present the same straightforward and powerful life-transforming message of hope in the Lord Jesus that Dr Graham was famous for," said Mr Crook.

Billy Graham died aged 99 last Wednesday. He became famous around the world after the Second World War and was considered one of the most influential preachers of the 20th century.

His funeral will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the USA.

f The Aldingbourne Trust party enjoys the Planetarium LIFT off was enjoyed by a group from the Aldingbourne Trust on a journey to outer space.

More than 90 members, volunteers, staff and trustees from the trust were invited to visit the South Downs Planetarium at the time when astronaut Tim Peake's Freedom of the City ceremony was the centre of attention.

THe trust also celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and the visit to the Planetarium was the perfect way to start their celebrations.

THose who went along to the event at the Chichester attraction were treated to a special performance by Dr John Mason, the Planetarium's treasurer and one of its trustees.

THe visitors included Andrew

Pickthall, pictured on the front, who is one of the people supported by the trust. He said: "I had such a great day at the Planetarium and really enjoyed seeing all the different planets and how the International Space Station is made up."

THe trust, based north of the A27 near Fontwell, supports adults with learning disabilities to live independently and develop their skills within a variety of social enterprises with the aim of leading into paid or voluntary employment.

THe Friends of Aldingbourne - which is a separate charity of the trust - raises funds for the people the trust supports to be able to access more activities within the community and part-funded

THis generosity enabled more people to attend.

THe time spent at the Planetarium proved to be educational, interesting and fun for all those who went along.

Everyone was in awe of the presentation and the environment in which they found themselves. Many said how relaxing and calming the time in the Planetarium made them feel.

Tracy Milward, the trust's volunteer co-ordinator, arranged the visit.

She said: "THank you to everyone at the South Downs Planetarium for an amazing experience.

"THe feedback has been amazing and we really appreciated the invitation and your hospitality." *See page 11

DRAMA students from Felpham have been working hard with the National THeatre.

THe 14 pupils from Years 10, 12 and 13 are using comments from a director with the London venue to prepare for their show at the Chichester Festival THeatre later this month.

THe director attended one of their initial performances at Felpham Community College, along with a representative from the theatre, in February and passed on his suggestions.

Molly Light, one of the Year 13 students involved, said: "THe representative from the National THeatre who watched our school in-house performance was really enthusiastic and positive about our work.

"He left us his notes on minor improvements we can make, which we are currently working on, ready for the Chichester show.

"We have really enjoyed being a part of this whole experience and it has definitely made us want to perform professionally in the future if we can."

THe students' involvement with the National THeatre Connection project is called When they go Low. THey had ten topics from which to choose, shortlisted the two that most excited them and were given the script chosen for them from their shortlist.

standing up for what they believe in even when the reactions are unexpected.

Another of the Year 13 students involved, Shannon Noble, said: "THis is the second year we have taken part in the project.

"We have seen a number of performances at Chichester Festival THeatre over the years and to actually perform ourselves last year was brilliant - a really good experience for us all and we cannot wait to do it again this month.

"It has been nice working with younger year groups. Our diversity has worked well.

"Our performance is about feminism and how it impacts young people. Peforming our adaption of the script really makes you think about the messages you want to get across to the audience."

THe 50-minute piece on March 21 is part of a week-long programme of performances from schools and theatre companies who are taking part in the Connections project.

Tickets cost £5 from the theatre.

Nic Coney, the college's curriculum leader for drama, said: "THe students have worked really hard on their performance, constantly responding to feedback and improving their piece to get it as professional as possible.

"We are really proud of all the work they have put in and performing at the Chichester Festival THeatre will be a brilliant experience for them."

` Parking charge WE HAVE been informed the short stay parking charge for two seasonal car parks in the Bognor Regis area featured in last week's edition was wrongly given to councillors.

THe charge for up to an hour was said to be £1.50 in Rock Gardens and Culver Road, rather than the correct £1.

THe council members involved on the environment and leisure working group have confirmed they still want the charge to be frozen, which was the subject of the article, rather than increased as they were recommended to agree.

` Play Ranger dates PLAY Rangers will return to Aldwick this year.

THe fun sessions at West Park and Avisford Park recreation ground will begin in half-term on May 29 and 31 and continue in the summer holiday after Aldwick Parish Council agreed to spend nearly £8,000 funding them.

A total of 28 sessions across both sites will be provided. Parish council chairman Cllr Lilian Richardson said: "THis is a lot of money but these are always immensely popular."

Toilets fight will continue OPPONENTS of unisex toilets around Bognor Regis have pledged to keep their fight going.

THey will be raising the matter at the full meeting of Arun District Council next week after they refused to accept an explanation for the installation of the facilities for men and women.

As reported, the town’s new promenade loos will be unisex along with the refurbished toilets at Culver Road in Felpham.

Some councillors wanted their anger at the imposition of the toilets formally noted at last week’s meeting of the council’s environment and leisure working group.

But they were told that could not be done because it had been decided at a recent meeting of the council’s cabinet.

Instead, they said they would use the full council meeting on Wednesday to continue their objections.

Cllr Norman Dinegmans (C, Arundel & Walberton) said: “THe minutes of the cabinet will come to the full council and we can raise the matter there. THis is a matter of policy, which is the job of councillors and not the council’s officers.”

Cllr James Walsh (LD, Beach) said: “We asked the cabinet to confirm or not the policy of moving to unisex toilets. THey have not made that decision. THey sloped their shoulders and passed it to officers.

“It’s for the councillors to make decisions about what they think is appropriate. I am staggered to hear what has happened. Who runs this council?

Is it the elected councillors or is it the officers?

“We should make a recommendation from this working group. THis matter should either come back here to make a decision or go to full council. But it can’t and should not be left to officers to make, as it is a matter of policy.”

THe anger arose at the working group’s previous meeting. Its members were asked to agree to the future public toilet provision. THis was backed but they also added a recommendation to seek the cabinet’s view about unisex facilities.

Cabinet member for neighbourhood services Cllr Paul Wotherspoon told the working group last week: “THere were 20 recommendations. I took 19 of them and they were agreed.

“THe other recommendation was to say one way or the other if the cabinet was for or against unisex toilets. When it came to that issue, I had been advised it was a property and estates issue because it was to do with new build and the refurbishment of toilets not their closure, which is what I was involved with.

“THerefore, it needed to be taken by Cllr Stephen Haymes (the cabinet member for technical services).

“After that, the chief executive, Nigel Lynn, said it was not a matter for cabinet.

It was an operational matter and he quoted parts of the constitution.”

THe unisex opponents want people to have the choice of whether or not to use them or to be able to continue to use the traditional single sex facilities.

Ally and Donna use their heads to help raise money for charity MORE than £2,000 has been raised for charity by two women who had their head shaved in Bognor Regis.

Ally Dodd and Donna Chater sacrificed their locks in front of a packed crowd at the Victoria Inn. THey decided to go for their new look in aid of Prostate Cancer UK after Ally's husband, Clive, was diagnosed with the condition a year after the couple were married in 2015.

His treatment at St Richard's Hospital and the Royal Surrey Hospital has put him on the road to recovery.

Ally wanted to show her thanks by raising money for charity. Donna, who is the landlady at the pub, readily agreed

to join in.

Ally, 51, whose hair was eight inches long, said: "At the end of the evening, our total was over £2,000 and there is still more to come.

"In addition to sponsorship for the headshave, we held a raffle and sold merchandise, including handknitted clothes and hedgehogs, which I had made, and had hot food on offer for donations.

"We would like to thank everyone who came along and supported us and raised such an amazing amount."

What an amazing week! Students enjoyed 6 days of intensive skiing at Kaprun, part of the Zell am See / Kitsteinhorn ski area in the heart of Austria, a beautiful, traditional and very friendly resort.

Students experienced every type of weather condition the mountains could throw at them, from perfect sun to blizzards and temperatures down to -19°C! Everyone made a huge amount of progression in their skiing abilities.

Students reacted well to the fast pace of the week with action packed evening activities including: swimming, ice skating, a ski show, an ice hockey match, shopping in the town of Zell am See and a very memorable Karaoke night!

Well done to staff and students for another enjoyable trip!

Prom play site work to start PLAY time is set to get better on Bognor Regis seafront. Work on a new play area on the beach is about to begin.

More than 50 children at a time will be able to enjoy themselves on the 40-plus play features in the site. It is due to open in the spring.

Arun District Council has chosen awardwinning playground supplier Kompan Ltd to install the area next to the popular Beach on the Beach sandpit.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "We are pleased that construction is set to get underway in March, ready for a spring opening.

"We have listened to what the public wanted and are confident that they will be delighted with the results of this project to bring a fantastic play area to the heart of Bognor Regis."

Public consultation carried out by the

council six months ago showed that an overwhelming 95 per cent of respondents wanted to see a new play facility aimed at a range of ages and abilities.

THe selected site contains a host of imaginative designs which incorporate the use of sea creatures, a theme which residents chose in the consultation, and includes a wide range of play equipment.

THis includes flat seat swings, two dolphin springers, a double tower with bridge and

spider net, an inclusive roundabout and a double cradle swing with bird's nest. THe items have been designed so they are also suitable for youngsters with disabilities.

Cllr Phil Hitchins, the chairman of Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee, said: "I believe that the designs truly reflect what families want to see on the seafront, which is a modern, exciting play area that young people will really enjoy and want to visit over and over again."

From page one Incidents, particularly in low level drug dealing and taking behind the sports pavilion and behind the parish hall.

"All we are asking for is a patrol visiting once every two weeks and taking a walk around."

Sergeant Ian Cheesman said the priorities of Sussex Police were tackling child sexual exploitation, including cyber crime, stopping people becoming victims of scams and keeping residents safe.

"We are doing a lot but there is a lot more to do. Occasionally, we will have to let people down and say we can't do any more. THat's the stark reality," he said.

But he pointed out police had disrupted young people in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton from a campaign of disorder.

He said: "We have done a lot of work on that in the past couple of weeks. I don't want to big it up and make it seem worse than it is but we have won quite a few small battles with these kids. We are still collating CCTV evidence, traders' evidence and speaking to the public."

THe police were also committed to making the Arun district a hostile place for visiting drug dealers to trade in. "We want to make this area hostile to them. Hopefully, they will get the message and go somewhere else," he said.

Police officers did go through Barnham, he said, but there was always the desire for more patrols.

Better links had been set up with the British Transport Police to have a bigger presence at its sites in the district. "We do not have the resources to cover their work as well," he added.

Prison for brazen thief A BRAZEN thief who stole money from a muslim centre in Bognor Regis has been sent to prison.

Adam Rumball was caught on CCTV taking the box in the lobby area at the West Sussex Muslim Society for donations and emptying it of its contents.

THe 44-year-old went into the muslim centre in Spencer Street at 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 26, last year, and took the donation box into the washing area in the premises.

He was seen on CCTV stuffing the cash into his pockets before he hid the box.

Following the CCTV being issued last July, several people saw the appeal by Sussex Police and named Rumball as being the man in the

photographs.

He was questioned for the offence in August and, after an investigation by officers, was charged in December.

On February 16, Rumball appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to burglary. He was sent to prison for 16 weeks.

Detective Constable Jon Tizzard said: "I would want to thank all of those who got in touch with us and gave us Rumball's name.

"Stealing is bad enough, but when it is from generous donations made to support organisations like this, it is despicable.

"I am grateful to those who helped us to hold Rumball to account for his actions."

Arcade shops' new tenants GROWING e-cigarette retailer Vapor Evolution has filled the first empty premises in a Bognor Regis shopping centre since it was bought.

THe vaping shop has moved two doors along to a larger unit in THe Arcade after nearly four years at its southern end.

THe move was necessary because of the success of the business, which helps to support four people.

One of the business's joint owners, Michael Searles, said: "We wanted to get a shop open in Bognor Regis in 2014 which was close to a car park.

"Being in THe Arcade has been good for us. We see more traffic in the summer, obviously.

"THe old landlord was all right but Arun District Council taking over THe Arcade made it a lot easier for us to move.

"THey have been good to work with and we would not have moved if the old landlord was still here.

"THe council have got plans to improve THe Arcade. What is good for them, has to be good for us."

As reported, Arun spent £1.9m buying THe Arcade, between High Street and Belmont Street, last October from an insurance company.

It has stated the purchase was an investment for its property portfolio, as well as helping towards the regeneration of Bognor Regis.

It has since been working hard to carry out essential repairs needed to be able to let the several vacant units.

THis has led to considerable commercial interests in the premises.

THe district council has also announced another of the empty units in THe Arcade is about to become occupied.

Warrens Bakery, the oldest Cornish pasty maker in the world, is moving into the large unit facing the High Street.

THe company will soon be picking up the keys to begin fitting out the premises for its first branch in Sussex. It is not yet known how many jobs will be created by the expansion.

Cllr Phil Hitchins, chairman of Arun District Council's regeneration subcommittee for Bognor Regis, said: "We are delighted that there is such strong interest from new businesses wanting to base themselves in Bognor Regis, and to trade from this iconic building.

"I look forward to personally welcoming the new companies to the town, and seeing businesses in every unit."

Arun's cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: "THis is our property investment strategy in action.

"It will generate income for the council in the long term to offset the lack of central government funding and enable us to keep delivering valued services to our community."

A spokesman for the district council added there was confirmed retail interest in some of the remaining units.

But a couple were still available to let.

Tourism service move welcomed LONGER opening hours for tourist information in Bognor Regis have been welcomed by councillors.

THey said they were pleased the move of the brochures and leaflets to the Regis Centre had led to a more convenient service for customers.

THe switch to the entertainment venue was made last month after the closure of the previous premises on the opposite side of Place St Maur.

Margaret Murphy, Arun District Council’s tourism development officer, said the visitor information point had been created in the centre’s foyer.

“THis is seen as a progressive move as the centre is open much longer hours, including evenings, Saturdays and some Sundays throughout the year, and has a vibrant list of activities and theatre entertainment which is seen to have a natural synergy with a visitor information facility,” she told the council’s environment and leisure

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said: “It’s a very good idea to move the information point. For it not to open on weekends and bank holidays was unbelieveable. I welcome the fact it will be open more.”

Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham W) thanked Mrs Murphy for her hard work.

“THis looks really exciting for the residents of Arun, and Bognor Regis especially, and the Regis Centre will gain a huge number of people popping in there to see what is going on,” he said.

Cllr Emma Neno (C, Rustington E) said: “THis is a brilliant move in the right direction. THis has got to be good for a visitor centre in a seaside town.”

THe visitor information point had been in a shared facility with Sussex Newspapers since 2011. But the company had declined to pay what Mrs Murphy described as a fair rent to take on a new agreement. THis led it to leave the premises last month.

Waste reduction advice will be available on the seafront A ROADSHOW in Bognor Regis next week will focus on reducing food waste and packaging.

THe West Sussex Waste Education Trailer will be parked along the seafront on Wednesday to spread the word about how to cut the amount of rubbish being thrown away.

Representatives from Arun District Council and West Sussex Waste will be with the trailer from 9.30am-4pm on the Place St Maur to pass on advice.

` Store's clean-up STAFF from a Bognor Regis store will be taking part in a spring-clean this Sunday.

Employees of Mountain Warehouse in London Road are among those at just 58 branches across the country who will be taking part in the nationwide event.

THey are inviting the public to join them. A spokesman said: "THe store staff will be setting off at 10.30am to their selected area, and each pick will last approximately two hours.

"THere are only 15 spaces available on each litter pick. So, head on into the store to sign up."

Meanwhile, a beach-clean by Bognor Regis in Bloom members tomorrow has been cancelled because of the bad weather.

Rebecca Vervecken, on behalf of volunteers, said the Met Office's amber warning for snow and ice tomorrow, after predicted snow yesterday and today, meant it could be impractical to go ahead.

It is hoped to re-arrange the event.

MP makes further visit to care home

MP Nick Gibb has made a return visit to a Bognor Regis care home.

Mr Gibb went back to Aronel Cottage Care Home to find out the views of its owner, Julian Hitchcock, about the social care and nursing system.

"It is invaluable to talk to people like Julian, who have years of experience in social care provision and can provide ideas for improving the system.

"I enjoyed visiting the care home and meeting residents and will pass on Julian’s comments and ideas to the newly appointed minister for social care," said Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Last year, he organised a meeting between the then minister of state for social care and Mr Hitchcock.

THe follow-up visit enabled Mr Gibb to see the care that Mr Hitchcock and staff provide for their 38 residents at the home in Highfield Road.

Aronel Cottage is a family-owned care home which was established in 1975, making it the oldest care home in Bognor Regis and it offers a wide range of personalised services.

Radio Respect has taken on the premises in West Street to sell new and used vinyl records as well as CDs and DVDs to help its work on air as the only radio station dedicated to promoting mental health and mental wellbeing.

A WOMAN who is playing a leading role in helping survivors of rape and sexual abuse will be giving the next talk at a Bognor Regis church.

Maggie Ellis is guest speaker at the Cherished Women's Breakfast event at the town's Opengate Church. It will begin at 8.30am on March 10.

Maggie is founding director of Lifecentre, a Chichester-based charity that has supported thousands of rape and sexual abuse survivors since 2001.

In a rare interview, Maggie will talk openly about her life and the vision that turned her dream into reality.

She was born into a German/Jewish family, some of whom survived the

Town mayor's starry-eyed in his space clothes as he meets Tim

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ASTRONAUT Major Tim Peake has praised his home city, Chichester, after he received the Freedom of the City.

At a special ceremony held on Sunday, Major Peake was presented with the scroll by Mayor Cllr Peter Evans.

THe event at Chichester Festival THeatre was witnessed by around 1,000 fans who gained free tickets.

Among them was Bognor Regis Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, who attended the occasion in a special waistcoat made by his seamstress.

He said: "It was an amazing experience to be able to attend the Freedom of the City event for Tim Peake at the Chichester Festival THeatre at the weekend.

"Having followed his journey while he was on the mission to the international space station and visited the exhibition in Chichester, this event was the final piece to the puzzle to actually see Tim Peake - a local man who has done us so proud."

In a speech, Major Peake said: “I’d like to say how delighted I am to be back here in my home city and what a huge honour it is to receive the Freedom of the City of Chichester.

“I’d like to say a huge thank-you to the Mayor, Peter Evans, and to the city council for bestowing this honour upon me. Of course, Chichester and the local area holds a very special place in my heart. Not only because it was the place

I was born and I spent the first 18 years of my life.

“Also, it was the decisions and influences of those formative years that really shaped the rest of my life and, ultimately, led to a journey in to space.

“THat journey would not have been possible without the help and support of many, many people."

Major Peake thanked Glynis and Derek Chaffer from the Westbourne Cub Scouts, describing them as 'giving hundreds of children like myself their first taste of adventure and outdoors, building confidence and resilience in our younger generations and in the words of the Scouts, giving them skills for life.'

Glynis Chaffer, Cub Scout leader for 39 years at 1st Westbourne, said: “Tim was one of my Scouts. I am so proud of him.

Knowing one of our Cubs has been in a spaceship is a very proud feeling.

"As a Scout, Tim was really enthusiastic.

It makes us really proud of Westbourne, too, and puts us on the map and gives us a place in history. “ Tim also thanked the high school which he attended until 1990 before he went on to Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

Major Peake continued: “I’d also like to thank Chichester High School and all the amazing teachers who dedicate so much of their time to helping students to get the best start in life.

"Not just in terms of their education but in terms of guiding students through the difficult choice we all have to make during our teenage years.

“And, finally, none of this would have been possible at all without the immense support of family and friends.

"Despite choosing a career path from an early age that has had more than it’s fair share of risks, my parents have always provided the encouragement and unwavering support to help me succeed. THank you to mum and dad and to all the friends and family that are here today.”

During a question and answer session held after Major Peake's presentation, he answered questions from children including 'How do I become an astronaut?' and 'Did you bring anything back from space?'

Major Peake wowed fans after the ceremony with a meet and greet session.

THe foyer at Chichester Festival THeatre was transformed to allow Major Peake to greet the audience and take photographs.

Loella Harris and her husband, Derrick, from Chichester, attended with their three-year-old son Russell.

Loella said: “I made it on to page 227 of his book Ask an Astronaut and I just had to come along here today. I’m really happy that I was able to meet him. I actually tried to become an astronaut but I can’t because of my asthma.

Derrick added: “It was an honour to see Major Tim Peake receive his key to the freedom of Chichester. Russell loved it, too, and even got to meet his space hero.”

` Carnival prizes PRIZE money has been increased for this year's Bognor Regis Carnival.

THe event's organising committee has upped the amount the best entries to the June 9 community celebration will receive.

THe parade's overall winner will receive £100 on top of a category prize of either £150 or £50. THere are five classes for various entries as well as the new Erik Jack Special Award for most colourful entry.

Judging will take place at the starting point along THe Esplanade, before the procession sets off along the seafront at 1.15pm. Prize-giving will take place in West Park around 2.30pm.

Steve Hearn, parade manager, said: "THis year, to encourage participants to enter, the prize money has been increased to help offset some of the costs involved in entering and trophies will be awarded to first prize and runnerup in each class."

Entry forms are available around the town, including the London Road offices of Post Newspapers.

Pension campaign pledge CAMPAIGNERS for better pensions for women have pledged to carry on their fight in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

It has been a year since the area's branch of the Women Against State Pension Inequality was founded after an article in the Bognor Regis Post.

THe founder, Jill Robertson, said belief in the justice of their cause was stronger than ever.

"THe fight still continues, with many women joining in on the mass complaint to the Department of Work and Pensions.

"THe Bognor and Chichester South Coast group continue to urge all 1950s local women to contact them, to help with the group's aims and bring a successful conclusion to our goals.

"THese are to achieve fair transitional arrangements for women born in the 1950s affected by the changes to the state pension age," she said.

"THis translates into a 'bridging' pension to cover the gap from age 60 until the state pension age, which is not means-tested and with compensation for losses for those women who have already reached the pension age.

"We do not ask for a reversal of any pension to the age of 60 and no specific age groups of women born in the 50s should be favoured above others."

THree successful workshops were held last month at Granddad's Front Room CIC in the High Street to enable women to start their letter-writing to the DWP. THe Bognor and Chichester South Coast group's members are marking International Women's Day with owners of venues lighting their premises purple to reflect 100 years since some women were given the right to vote. THe special illumination will be happening on the

pier and five other nearby premises from 5.30pm-7.30pm next THursday. THe following day sees the group holding an information session from 3pm-5pm in the Regis Centre.

Mrs Robertson's first appeal for support in this area came after she had attended a national march held by Waspi in London.

THe organisation was formed by women determined to overcome as many as three increases in ten years by the government in their state pension age from 60 to 67 without what they say was adequate warning.

THere are believed to be some 22,000 women in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas who are affected out of an estimated 53,000 in the county.

Mrs Robertson had four potential members at the start. THis doubled at its first meeting last April. Another meeting three weeks later saw the membership reach double figures and it has continued to grow.

It climbed past 100 last September as a result of a summer publicity day and a stall at the Birdman in Bognor Regis.

"More names were gathered and stories of how hard the wait of six years was becoming, from new ladies who stopped to talk to us," said Mrs Robertson.

THe group has also played an active role in protests at Parliament when the matter has been debated by MPs. "Supporting the cause has been worthwhile as the understanding and attention from many members of the House of Commons has grown, enabling Waspi to forge ahead further with the campaign," said Mrs Robertson. THis would continue at a major debate by MPs on April 27.

Students vow to take stand on inclusion HUNDREDS of students from the University of Chichester have pledged to tackle discrimination in sport.

More than 400 members from 25 different clubs and societies in the university signed a sports charter to show their commitment to promoting inclusivity.

THe pledge is part of the #TakeAStand campaign organised by British Universities and Colleges Sport, to make games accessible to everyone.

Lauren Ellis, the Students' Union president at the university, said: "THe #TakeAStand campaign is all about standing against discrimination in sport whether that's homophobia or racism.

"THe sports charter is for students to show they agree that these discriminations shouldn't be in sport at our university.

"As soon as they signed the charter, they were given a rainbow lace to use in their sports fixtures for the rest of the season, if they wish, to show their support for the #TakeAStand campaign as individuals and as a team.

"Other universities will get involved in the campaign and do different things but we do quite a lot here - our aim is to make sport inclusive to all our

students.

It is also committed to working with LGBTQ+ groups to rid games of homophobia, and transphobia, while ensuring those taking part challenge unacceptable behaviour.

Daisy Smale, the university's sports federation president, added: "We are proud to have so many students supporting the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.

"THe sports charter forms part of the #TakeAStand campaign and coincided with the launch of our new #TakeAStand accreditation scheme.

"THis scheme enables clubs to earn a bronze, silver or gold accreditation by completing a series of inclusionfocused activities.

A SINGLE mum from West Sussex has spoken about adopting children ahead of national LGBT adoption and fostering week.

About one in five approved adopters in West Sussex has been lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender since January, 2016.

West Sussex adopter Jo said she thought nothing about being gay when considering adopting a child.

"I was more worried about the fact I was single. I have never experienced any negativity from people as a LGBT adopter and I have always been open and honest with people, which I am sure helps," she said.

Jo has successfully adopted two children and describes it as an 'amazing experience' and encourages new adopters to find support groups and networks.

THe county fostering team will be holding a drop-in information session from 9.30am-1.30pm next Wednesday at Chichester Library.

THe fostering team will be at THe Ropetackle in Shoreham from 6pm9pm on the same day.

New scanner donated THOUSANDS of prostate cancer patients in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas will benefit from a new scanner.

THe hi-tech equipment has been donated to Love Your Hospital - the dedicated charity of St Richard's Hospital operator Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

THe bladder scanner has been installed in the urology department at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, thanks to a ÂŁ6,500 cheque from the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation as part of its work helping men with the serious condition.

More than 150 outpatients a week are seen in the department. Its clinicians

will use the scanner as a diagnostic tool to assess the health of a man's lower urinary tract to look for possible signs of prostate or bladder cancer.

Suzie Venn, a consultant urologist at the hospital, said: "THe new scanner allows us to provide a one-stop service for patients coming in to see us.

"We can now provide important tests for patients without the need for multiple visits to the clinic, speeding up their pathway through the hospital.

"THis new scanner is invaluable and the urology team are so very grateful for this support from PCaSO. THe portable 3D ultrasound bladder scanner uses sensitive electrons and ground-breaking technology to provide better accuracy and will reduce the need for unnecessary catheterisation.

Roger Bacon, of the support organisation's Sussex branch, said: "Anything that saves time while giving fast and useful information to the clinicians is worth supporting."

Amanda Tucker, Love Your Hospital's head of charity, said: "We are so grateful for the support PCaSO continues to provide to St Richard's Hospital and to local prostate cancer patients across West Sussex."

In 2016, supporters of the organisation donated ÂŁ25,000 towards new template biopsy equipment, enabling staff to investigate the whole of the prostate more accurately and reduce the need for patients to travel further away for testing.

PCaSO has more than 1,000 members - mainly in Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex. THeir aim is to raise awareness of prostate cancer so more men are diagnosed early when the chances of a cure are high.

Big band revival BIG BAND sounds are about to return to Bognor Regis.

Lovers of music associated with the likes of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and the Rat Pack have been invited to go along to the first session of a rehearsal band.

THis has been arranged by big band leader Mike Bosley with Music and Arts for next Monday at THe Hothampton Arms (THe Hoff ) in London Road.

Mike has played the saxophone for more than 40 years and has operated as a musical instrument maker and repairer in Bognor Regis since 1981.

He has always wanted to recreate somewhere for a rehearsal band in the town.

"I have run a big band on and off for years, pictured above, taking it out on the road gigging both locally and further afield," he said.

"It's a lot of work fronting a band and fitting it in with running my musical instrument business.

"I was really pleased when Steve

Goodheart approached me on behalf of the Rox organisation. THey are committed to promoting live music in and around Bognor Regis and are very keen about getting people involved.

"After taking about all the opportunities, Steve asked me to help by providing my library and helping run the open session.

"THe great thing about rehearsal bands is that you never know who will turn up, even in Bognor Regis."

Mike played in a rehearsal big band from the age of 12 in a hall at the side of the Robin Hood pub in Shripney.

He took along his saxophone to the sessions run by a musician called Dickie Barnes, who was also branch secretary of the Musicians' Union.

THe union used to sponsor such bands as places where musicians could practise their sight reading skills and meet other musicians.

Snap happy club members KEEN photographers have been urged to join a new course at a Bognor Regis centre.

THe Laburnum Centre's Photographic Club leader, Barry Gee, is staging a new course to enable those keen on life through a lens to learn more about the hobby.

THe sessions will begin on April 4 and feature nine key points about photography - including composition, focusing and exposure. THey will take place during the club's usual Wednesday meeting times of 9.30am-3.30pm.

Mr Gee said: "People can come along with a mobile, a tablet or a camera. We will deal with the lot. THe main thing is to help people to take better photographs than they already are.

"It is not necessarily about learning all about photography but just knowing how to do things better."

` Royal street parties ORGANISERS of street parties around Chichester and Bognor Regis to mark this year's royal wedding have been urged to apply well in advance.

Anticipation of the royal occasion between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19 is starting to grow in West Sussex. Some applications to hold the public are starting to be made to district and borough councils.

A county council spokesman said: "None of these six councils is charging application fees for temporary road closures as part of the celebrations to mark the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19.

"However, applications still need to be submitted. which is particularly important so that emergency services are made aware of the closure.

"Details on how to apply can be found on the councils' websites - arun.gov.uk/ apply-to-hold-an-event and chichester.gov. uk/streetparties

of the four regulars at last week's meeting said anyone who joined them would find the time well spent.

THelma Cox, 86, of Aldwick, said: "My photography has improved since I have been coming here for about ten years.

"I like to know what my camera can do and Barry is brilliant. When I want to take a photo, I can take the one that I want."

Pagham resident Mr Gee, 75, has run the club for some 12 years. "I had a stroke and I needed an interest," he said.

"I used to come to the computer club at the centre and the woman who ran it saw some of my photos and I should be doing something better with them."

He has passed on his knowledge and enthusiasm to up to 15 members at a time.

"I'm very pleased with what I have seen," he told Aldwick Parish Council.

THe parish council agreed at its latest meeting to pay £20,000 towards the cost of the work.

Lifesaving equipment is officially launched f Brian Woods

Brian's thinking big for business SMALL business owners in the Post area have a new chairman to represent them.

Brian Woods has been elected to chair the newly-formed south east region of the Federation of Small Businesses.

His area covers West Sussex, Surrey, East Sussex and Kent and includes some 18,000 federation members.

Brian's full-time job as managing director of WS Planning and Architecture, based in Reigate, keeps him busy.

But he said: "I have been a member of the FSB for many years enjoying both the benefits and lobbying side of the organisation.

"I am proud to have been elected to

the position of chairman of this newlyformed region and will juggle with time to make it work for the benefit of both federation members and my own staff."

Assisting in the management of the federation's region is Clive Soper, from East Sussex. He will be appointed as the policy lead.

THe FSB is the UK's largest small bsuiness organisation. It is enjoying a modernisation process called Refreshing our Roots.

Formed in 1974, the federation represents small and medium-sized businesses lobbying and campaigning where necessary at all levels as well as providing a wide range of member benefits aimed at reducing costs.

GENEROUS Bognor Regis resident Trevor Woodland is helping to save lives.

Mr Woodland has donated the cost of a defibrillator to be installed in the town centre by the Lions.

He said: "I was sleeping on a flight to the Far East when all the lights went on and an announcement asking if there was a doctor on board.

"THen I saw there was a passenger lying on the floor in the galley and the crew were using a defibrillator on them.

"It reminded me of the Lions appeal for donations for a defibrillator and I decided that when I returned home I would offer the full amount for the one

required outside Boots."

Each defibrillator costs at least ÂŁ2,650.

THe first of the machines to be donated by the town's Lions club was officially launched ouside the chemist last week by Mr Woodland with members of Bognor Regis Lions Club and Boots' staff.

THe machine was kept behind the shop's pharmacy counter when it was bought last year because the premises were clad in scaffolding for months.

Reg Liddon, Bognor Regis Lions Club president, said: "I hope it's never used!

It's a bizarre thing to say when you've worked hard to get something. If it is ever used, it will be worth every penny."

Its fundraising committee chairman,

Richard Johns, said: "Trevor has set off a chain reaction and we are now in the process of getting our fourth defibrillator in the area.

"To celebrate the Lions' 100 years in existence, they wanted to provide at least one defibrillator for every community.

"THey are lifesavers. THere are people walking about in Bognor Regis who have had their life saved by a defibrillator. It is important to reassure people not to be afraid to use it.

"By doing nothing, you can't help. By doing something, you have a chance to save their life.

"I plan to get as many defibrillators as I can get funding for."

Takeaway boss offers to help those most in need Town centre business owner will mark Mother's Day with a unique event to support homeless people in the area A PERSONAL tragedy is being used by a Bognor Regis takeaway owner to help those in the community with the least.

HoJa is offering free food at the Charcoal Grill to the town’s homeless people in memory of his late mother.

His kind-hearted gesture will take place from midday to 4pm on Mother’s Day at the Station Road business.

“I would like to provide a free meal to those who are homeless around the town. I see people living on the streets and I feel so sad.

Life is very unfair,” he said.

He is also broadening his offer to workers in the emergency services in recognition of the important jobs they carry out.

He devised his generous idea last year as a Christmas present with a difference. But the death of his mother saw him spend the festive

period in Istanbul in his homeland.

“I think that helping others will be a good thing for my mother’s memory,” he said, “helping those who need it the most with some hot food.

“THose who are living on the streets are lacking so much. It’s worthwhile to want to help them by using my business.”

HoJa intends to work with Stonepillow, the charity which works with homeless people in Bognor Regis and Chichester, to ensure his goodwill gesture is received by those who are most in need.

Emergency services workers will be required to show some ID to claim their mouth-watering food.

HoJa will be offering some of his tasty doner kebabs, chickens, and burgers and chips on the day for takeaway only.

Gut feeling is easy way to achieving better health THE BACTERIA found in your gut comprise approximately two pounds of your body weight!

Cecile's taste in wine led to an enjoyable sampling Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com CÉCILE BERGART, of Hampshire Wine School fame, strode into one of two M&S wine-tasting evenings (a recent expansion reflecting demand for places) last week and delivered her talk with customary panache and verve allied to a vestige of sauce.

Being originally of Champagne area provenance, she began the soirée with a fizz starter from Italy, but issued a caveat in terms of Prosecco whose popularity has led to planting further afield (not necessarily with the best terroir) and the new distinction between DOC and DOCG with the latter being the assurance of quality.

THe Acquesi Pinot Grigio Rosé Spumante, on offer at just £8, proved to be a cheeky little number being blush terracotta in colour and oozing strawberry and red cherry.

THe next two wines, namely a Cantina di Monteforte Soave Classico and the Seaglass Sauvignon Blanc from Santa Barbara, respectively priced at £8.50 and

£10, were presented primarily to contrast body and acidity. We were invited to look for both properties and it was evident that the Soave Classico was both less acidic and less intense in flavour than the more acidic Santa Barbara wine and intensely flavoured product of maritime vineyards with Pacific Ocean breeze and copious hours of sunshine.

THe latter I commend to you, given its

abundance of ripe stone fruit and citrus flavours, its pear aromas and crisp , dry and refreshing character.

Tannins were the theme for the two red wines selected for our delectation a D'Aragon Old Vine Cariñena Cariñena from North - East Spain (£8) and a Notte Rossa Primitivo di Manduria from Puglia in the south of Italy.

Cécile then duly demonstrated the way

to sense tannin levels, explaining that tannins strip away saliva in the mouth thus desiccating the buccal area and covering the teeth in fur.

THe lower level of tannin in the Spanish wine meant that it would pair with lean ham or fillet steak, while the higher tannins in the Primitivo wine suit hard cheese or fatty meat, such as lamb.

THis bold, almost brassy, Primitivo was

splendidly flavoursome and oozed dark black fruit and hints of dark chocolate - a wine that captures your taste buds!

THe evening concluded with a glass of a classic style Ruby port, ideal on these Siberian evenings of late pour se réchauffer and packed with rich dark fruits and spice aromas and the ideal accompaniment to either cheese or dark chocolate À bientôt!

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which covers start of a new era for its work.

WITH over 40 per cent of the cedar shingles now fitted and the scaffolding starting to be removed over the coming weeks, we really are entering an exciting phase of the Aldingbourne Trust build.

On the ground-floor, the seven enormous sized panes of glass, weighing a hefty 250 kilograms each, have been installed at its new Quarry Building, pictured below.

THe ground-floor screed is also laid (covering the underfloor heating) and, with the internal walls now complete, the dynamic interior layout can be seen clearly.

THe lift will also be installed over the coming weeks. THis highly specialised job is performed by a single technician.

An essential part of the construction process are the gabion baskets.

THe word gabion comes from the Italian word gabbione, meaning 'big cage'. Gabion baskets come in many shapes and are usually filled with rocks, concrete, sand or soil.

THey were conceived originally to create erosion-free zones, stable temporary foundations and as movable protection for the military.

FAMILIES across Sussex with Type 1 diabetes can gain help from a new group.

THe TD1 Sussex group has been formed by Diabetes UK as a support network for children, young people and their families to come together and discuss matters in local care and treatment.

Philippa Earl, from Hove, chairs the group. Her 13-yearold son, Seb, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2013.

Philippa, pictured above with Earl and her husband, said: "We set up the group because we found there was very little support for parents locally. THe impact of that diagnosis can be very isolating and bewildering.

"THe hospital were great in treating Seb, but as a parent it's been tough coming to terms with diabetes. You feel like there is no one else like you. We wanted to give other families a sense of togetherness as a community where everyone speaks the same language.

"When we meet we share

experiences and exchange valuable tips and information about our children's care.

"We also hold events for families, with fun activities for children, young people and parents, like paintballing and roller disco."

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin. THe cause of the condition is unknown but it is unrelated to a person's weight and cannot be prevented. It's the most common type of diabetes in children and young adults, starting suddenly and quickly getting worse. It is treated by daily doses of insulin.

Matt Hopkins, Diabetes UK's improving care manager in Sussex, said: "A support network is so important for families coming to terms with Type 1 diabetes.

"THe daily management of the condition can be a struggle - from school lunches to planning trips away."

THey are now used extensively in civil engineering, road building and increasingly as a decorative feature on landscaping projects.

THe gabion baskets at the Aldingbourne Trust build were filled painstakingly by hand and not only look aesthetically pleasing, but also help to integrate and merge the building into the surrounding landscape and environment.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the Aldingbourne Country Centre, where the Quarry Building is based, continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development.

LIFE-SAVERS with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance are among those chosen to benefit from a new charity partnership.

THe medical specialists could gain from a share of £250,000 if the initiative by the leading independent brewer, Hall & Woodhouse, is a success.

THe company hopes to achieve the target with fundraising activities by each of its 51 pubs, such as THe Lion in Nyetimber.

THese will include quiz nights, sponsored events, fun days and sports tournaments.

All the money raised in the two-year charity partner scheme will be split between eight air ambulances to improve their operations or buy new items of specialist equipment.

Julie Clare, head of corporate relations at the air ambulance, said: "We are delighted that the team at Hall & Woodhouse voted to support us.

"THis is a new and exciting partnership that will allow us to reach out to so many people in the local community."

Fundraising for the air ambulance began this week. THis month will see some of the pubs take part in THe World's Biggest Pub Quiz, an event being led by PubAid. Lucinda Gray, the sixth generation of the Woodhouse family to be involved with the brewer, said: "As a company that places the community at the heart of our business, supporting worthy causes is very important to Hall & Woodhouse.

"THese local air ambulance charities cover the counties where our public houses are located and each of them work tirelessly to care for our critically ill or injured patients within our community.

"We are extremely proud to have so many of our public houses backing the partnership and supporting this wonderful cause."

Previous two-year charity partnerships backed by the brewer have resulted in significant sums being raised.

In 2013/14, a total of £248,000 was brought in for Macmillan Cancer Services. THe latest partnership raised more than £210,000 - with the final total still to be calculated - for Together for Short Lives.

"I know our team and guests will do everything they can to exceed these totals over the next two years," said Ms Gray.

Sir, In the 'New Concerns Over Cottage' article that appeared in the Bognor Regis Post on February 20, Peter Johns, a trustee of THe Blake Cottage Trust, is quoted saying that now that the architects' plans for the projected visitor centre have been finalised, "we can go to potential funders to show them that this is a real project and that is what we intend to do".

THere has been the opportunity since September, 2015, to show not only to potential funders, but to the public, that theirs is a real project. In that time, the cottage has fallen into disrepair, and I don’t feel that the plans for the building have been fully explained to the public.

During the 2014 campaign, it was said that a large consortium of accountable organisations and individuals would be created to take care of the cottage and honour the trust put in the Blake Society, who created the public appeal. THis has not happened.

If such a consortium had been created, the necessary funds would have been raised a long time ago. THe fundraising should have continued immediately after the purchase of the cottage, with all members of the consortium contributing their expertise and their skills and, most importantly, making sure that everybody involved was accountable.

Names are not always the same for town roads The current names for areas can be the result of more recent changes LOOKING at street names, I have often wondered how and by whom the naming was decided, so I made a call to obtain the up to date information. It would appear that the earliest legislation involved was the Town Improvement Clauses Act 1847, Section 64/65.

At one time, the system was operated under the Public Health Act 1925, Section 18, and the builder or developer has to submit some ideas for naming to Arun District Council, which consults a number of bodies.

THis would include the Post Office to ensure no duplication, the relevant parish or local council to ensure there were no specific objections and then the emergency services, which I found to be unusual, but if you think about it this seems to be most sensible.

Ultimately, a consensus of opinion will be advised to the builder or developer in question. With the amount of development occurring at the moment it could be difficult for those involved, although there is a list held for possible future use.

THis list includes many local personalities, local family names, musical connections etc.

If you should want to submit a name, it is advisable to put this in writing to Arun District for its deliberations.

Where do you live? Have you ever wondered why the name of your street was chosen or

when the road was built? THere are numerous reasons for names being used in an area and they can often include the directional names of east, west, north and south. Sometimes, when a new estate is built, a theme is decided upon, such as birds, flowers and places. I was recently asked why Hillsboro Road was so named. It was thought to have been named by HW Briggs, who built the houses in the road, in the 1930s, after an area in Ilfracombe, although that place is spelt Hillsborough.

Previously, I had lived in Gainsboro Rd (note the shortened spelling).THis road was built in 1907 and shorted to the current spelling in a street directory of 1936. I had hoped to find a link for the spellings.

Names have a tendency to be retained after their initial conception. But this is not always the case and there are a number of areas within our district that emphases this fact. Today, we have Hawthorn Road, Town Cross Avenue, Ockley Road and Victoria Road, but this was not always the case. Until 1925, Hawthorn Road had the interesting names of Sheepwash Lane and Cemetery Road while Town Cross Avenue has been known as both Dung Cart Lane and Green Lane.

that the original name of Goodman Drive did not indicate its nearness to the sea.

If you have the opportunity to look at early maps of the town, it is quite interesting to note the development of certain roads, in relation to the surrounding area. One such is Essex Road, which was laid with 24 houses in 1903 and shown within an area known as ‘New Town’ on a map a year later. Originally, it was just a connecting road between Green Lane and Cemetery Road.

As we look around the town, it is sometimes difficult to determine visually the age of roads within an area. Looking at Argyle Road, this was developed in 1886 with all the houses being numbered consecutively because of the fields opposite. Eventually, in 1915, Bassett Road was developed but we then had to wait until 1925 to see the arrival of Cavendish Road which was named after a road in London where the builder lived. Alfred Hayes carried out these developments and he continued his naming theme from personal information.

For example ,Wellington Road was the name of his London house and Southdown Road reminded him of his local landscape. In this area, Canada Grove was developed in 1891, and possibly named such because the area was known as being 'Canada Gardens for the Poor'.

In the 1960s, the local press seemed to report much more detail on naming of roads and streets such as one report asking “Do you prefer the name of your road to be ‘plain’ or ‘fancy’”. It was reported the naming of roads was becoming a headache and the Bognor Regis Urban District Council had a problem when they came to the street names for the Fairlands Estate, North Bersted. THere were

names such as Romney Broadwalk, Renoir Mews and Van Dyke Place and one of the councillors felt some of the names might – in the 1960s – 'be too fanciful for an estate composed of semi-detached bungalows'.

THe reports continue over a number of weeks, with the decision being made eventually that ‘tree names’ would be used instead, only to find that the street nameplates had already been manufactured and delivered, thus leaving the names as planned.

At one time, of course, we simply had Lane, Road or Street, but this has developed over the years into a wider range of addresses, which includes Gardens, Avenues, Drives, Close, Walk and Way. Naming has now developed into a wider range after specific events and also the wider experiences of the builders and developers.

For example, in the past, this has occurred with roads such as Sherwood Road where residents can thank Mr H. Seymour who honeymooned in Sherwood Forest and Glenelg is the name of a place in Scotland where the builder’s wife was born. Finally.

Norbren Ave is named after Norman and Brenda, relatives of the builder.

Street maps have always shown the street or road, complete with the name. However, on some of the newer maps there are a series of numbers, which are then expanded elsewhere on the map with the names of the small groups of courts and mews that are springing up around the town. It is much easier to find out these facts now thanks to Ron Iden's The Street Names of Bognor Regis, available from Heygates bookshop in the High St, or the museum, when it opens for Easter.

City centre streets packed as more PostSport than 800 compete in pop-up race HUNDREDS of runners of all ages raced around the city centre streets of Chichester for the first leg of the Corporate Challenge.

Organised by Chichester Runners and Athletics Club, the event is designed to get people of all ages racing short distances around a pop-up track under the street lights.

Races took place on a circular track, starting and finishing at the Assembly Rooms in North Street. THe evening began with a group of inter-schools races involving primary and secondary aged pupils.

It was then on to two classified adult races, with more than 400 runners representing running clubs, businesses and various institutions going head-to-head in a bid to come out the champions.

Everyone from students to solicitors, retail staff to transport consultants took part in the friendly event.

With further events next Wednesday and the third leg on March 21, there's plenty of time for those taking part to improve on their overall position in the rankings.

THe class A race, which was a four lap race totaling about 4.5 kilometres, was won by Edward Dodd, of the Russell Giles

Partnership, who came sprinting home in 13 minutes 46 seconds. He was closely followed home by Worthing Hares' Jack Woods (13:53) and Matt Gordon, of Linx Systems, in third (13:57).

THe first female to finish was Rhiannon Dunlop, of the City of Portsmouth club, whose time of 15:28 was good enough for 28th overall. She was well over a minute faster than her nearest competitor, with Chi Uni's Alice Wright (16:23) and Lucy THraves (16:32) in second and third respectively.

THe B race, for less serious runners, was won by Reg Ball of alcohol retail chain Oddbins (16:15).

THe overall team honours went to Portsdown-based Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

THe team of Rob Fryer, Hugh Aggleton, Stuart Vagg and Joe Peake clocked a combined time of 1:1:41 to finish just four seconds ahead of the Russell Giles Partnership. Irwin Mitchell were third.

In the youth races. more than 300 primary and more than 105 secondary pupils took part over various laps of 700 metres.

ATHLETICS: It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Chichester Runners & AC athletes at the Sussex Indoor Championships, held at the David Weir Athletic Centre in Sutton.

Fleur Hollyer (under-15), using starting blocks for the first time, ran a PB of 8.44sec in the 60m, to qualify for the semi-final.

THere she stopped the clock at 8.50sec. She also recorded 10.75sec in the 60m Hurdles semi-finals, just short of her PB. Her focus is now on the National Championships at Sheffield.

In the under-17s, faulty starts unsettled Emily Russell and Phoebe Pontet, who were drawn together in 60m, where they recorded 8.86 and 8.92sec respectively.

Phoebe went on to claim fourth place (10.51sec) in the 60m Hurdles Final.

Under-20 Alyssa White won the Long Jump with a season’s best 5.13m but unfortunately it came at a price.

Her fourth-round jump saw her lose her footing off the board and turn her ankle.

Fortunately, an x-ray revealed no damage, as at first feared, but a badly bruised ligament.

CHICHESTER RFC return to action this week hunting their third win in four away at London Cornish.

THe Blues had a slow start to 2018, losing their first three matches which saw them lose touch with the leaders in London South Division One. But, with a number of key personnel now fit after injury, two victories in the space of three weeks have boosted spirits at Oaklands Park.

Scott Ashley's side currently sit fourth.

And a bonus point victory over Chobham last time out, followed by a week off, means Chi head to Putney tomorrow (2.15pm) confident of putting in a good show against a side who have lost their past four.

With just six matches of the season left, the Blues know that four wins should be enough to see them seal a top four finish.

Anything more than that will require slipups from the top three, who are 13 points clear of Ashley's side.

In Hampshire One, Bognor return from

a fortnight off to welcome Ventnor to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Purple and Greens sit second in the table and know they must keep on winning if they are maintain the pressure on league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

Bognor beat Fareham Heathens last time out 34-10 to seal maximum points. * Bognor under-16s kept up their fine form by beating Uckfield 57-7 at Hampshire Avenue to record their fourth win from five in the Sussex League.

Stand-in skipper George Orchard started the scoring. Further tries from Cellan Robinson (2) and Lewis Decarteret ensured the side sealed a bonus point before half time.

After the visitors scored a consolation after the break, Bognor responded with two further tries from Robinson, a powerful effort from Tommy Galpin and a fine team effort from Alfie Spurle. Misho Atanasov completed the scoring.

Title race is on for Sids as the league leaders come to town

Table toppers next for City CHICHESTER City will be looking to get their promotion push back on track as they head to league leaders Horsham YMCA in a tabletopping clash.

THe Lillywhites were the victims of one of the SCFL Premier shocks of the season when they were beaten by basement side Littlehampton Town last weekend.

It was one of those days where nothing would go right for Chi. A plucky performance by the visitors and a poor one by City turned the form book on its head as Miles Rutherford's side suffered a 1-0 reverse.

THat defeat condemned Chi to their second home defeat of the season and saw them slip to third, one point behind THree Bridges in second.

With seven sides in the hunt for the top two spots in the SCFL Premier, Rutherford knows his side need to avoid any further slip ups.

THey can make immediate amends tomorrow at Gorings Mead (3pm) when they play a YMCA side who are seven points clear of Chi. After winning their past seven league games, Horsham are the league's form side.

But Chi will take heart knowing that they defeated YM six weeks ago when goals from Samuel Ndlovu and Kaleem Haitham sealed a 2-0 victory in the fourth round of the RUR cup.

Rutherford will be hoping his side show that form rather than the performance that saw them lose to Littlehampton last weekend.

Chi had the best of the opening exchanges. Scott Murfin and Jimmy Wild went close for them before Dave Herbert fired over.

It was the Chi striker's brother Steve Herbert who broke the deadlock, though, slotting home past the onrushing City keeper Ant Ender.

Into the second half and a change of formation looked to have done the trick when Scott Murfin won a penalty.

But Ellis Martin put the spot kick too close to the Golds' keeper and he turned it round the post. A series of other second half chances were also spurned to lead to the loss.

Chi's chance to close the gap on the leaders in midweek was put paid to by the weather when a home match against THree Bridges was postponed on Tuesday.

SIDLESHAM'S title credentials will be put to the test when they welcome league leaders Alfold to the Rec tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side currently sit third in SCFL Division Two and have won their last three in all competitions.

But the Sids, who are six points off top spot with two games in hand, face a real test when table toppers Alfold come to town.

THey go into the match in good form having fired seven past Rottingdean Village in the league last weekend, with Tom Bayley (4), Joe Bennett (2) and Liam-Jay Bush scoring the Sids' goals.

But Pearce will be aware that his side suffered a defeat against the Surrey side in the reverse fixture before Christmas.

With a trip to second-place Roffey coming next week, the Sids know they must continue their fine form if they are to seal a return to senior football at the end of the year.

Fellow SCFL Division Two side Bosham are fifth, level on points with Sids. THey travel to Worthing Town tomorrow (3pm) having inflicted the first defeat since October on Alfold last weekend. Callum Coker and Jake Lafferty scored in the 2-0 win.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea says the club remain in two minds if they will push for promotion this term.

THe Lions are undefeated in ten in all competitions and still in the hunt for three trophies. But, hopes of bringing the SCFL Premier title back to Nyetimber Lane suffered a blow last weekend when Pagham drew 1-1 at lowly Arundel.

THat result leaves the Lions in sixth, 12 points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA but with two games in hand.

Wright's side also discovered this week that the FA would be restructuring the women's game from next season.

As well as the top tier becoming fully professional and tier two going semi-pro, Chi's current level will be renamed the FA Women’s National League.

Adrift but not yet sunk - Rocks out to down high-flying Saints Next Game

ST ALBANS CITY (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

ROCKS boss Jack Pearce believes his side can build some home momentum as he looks to spark a great escape.

With just 11 games of the season remaining, Bognor sit second bottom of National South, eight points from safety.

But, after securing a first home league win since August against Braintree a fortnight ago and running high-flying Hampton & Richmond close last weekend in a 1-0 defeat, the Rocks are not giving up hope just yet.

A visit from fifth-place St Albans City tomorrow (3pm) may not seem the easiest match on paper.

But a 2-1 win away in Hertfordshire in November still lingers fondly in the memory of the Bognor squad - and the Nye Camp faithful will be hoping the Rocks can pick up where they left off against the Saints by registering a double over the promotion chasers.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "I hope we can build on the last home game and I hope we can play as well as we did last time [against Hampton].

"We worked very hard and gave a good account of ourselves. If we get chances I hope we can take them."

Despite their lowly position, the Rocks had the better of the first half at a very cold Beveree stadium.

spurned a headed chance just before the break. Into the second half and Hampton took charge. THe Rocks held out until the 85th minute when Shaun Jeffers turned a low strike into the net.

Pearce said: "What Saturday showed is how competitive the league is this year and how the difference between success and failure is very small.

"THey are second from top, we are second from bottom and, after an hour, there was not much between us.

"We had two chances when we had them at our mercy and, when they had their moments, they took them. THat's football."

THe good news for the Rocks is that skipper Sami El-Abd is available after his red card for an alleged elbow at the end of the match was over-turned. THis means he is in contention for tomorrow's match.

Towering teen striker Stefan Ljubicic, who is on-loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and was dismissed an hour into his home debut against Truro City, is also available.

But Calvin Davies remains out through suspension while James Crane, Dan Beck and Chad Field are unavailable because of injury.

THat is, of course, as long as the Beast from the East relents and allows the Nyewood Lane turf to thaw out.

Pearce said: "We'll be making an early decision."

'Red cards not players' fault' THE DISMISSAL of Rocks' skipper Sami ElAbd last weekend continued an unwelcome trend for Bognor.

In three of the last four matches, a player has been dismissed for Jack Pearce's side. With Richard Gilot and Ben Swallow also seeing red since the new year, discipline appears to be a problem. But anyone around the Rocks' squad will laugh at such claims.

Pearce said the number of red cards were the most of any team in his 48 years of football - adding the reason ran a lot deeper than individual rash mistakes.

He said: "We haven't got a nasty bunch of players but the game is going that way. THere are more cautions and more sendings off.

"What we have to realise that at our level the FA, quite rightly, is trying to find younger referees to promote to the higher grades.

"You have to expect that they don't have the experience and that some players will play up to it. If you've got players trying to get opponents sent off, and surrounding the referee after incidents, you will get mistakes.

"I don't get upset, I get frustrated - it has major impact on the game. If you're on the wrong end as a player, manager and supporter it's dreadful. You have to take it on the chin."

WELL, it was a long time in the waiting. But finally we had a win!

It's fair to say that after our 2-1 win over Braintree Town at Nyewood Lane the other week the overwhelming feeling in the Nye Camp was surprise.

After such a poor run at home, finally we got out of that rut and performed well to deservedly win at home.

Can you honestly believe it that we had to go back to August to last savour a home victory in the league?

Given that poor run, I think it was important that we scored first - let's be honest, that really hasn’t happened much this season.

French midfielder Richard Gilot, the man who got us that very important early goal, performed well and Tommy Block was fully deserving of his man of the match award.

It was nice to get our own back after the 3-0 defeat at their place in Essex.

Braintree Town appear to be struggling at the moment but the difference is they have picked up a lot more points in the early part of the season.

I have to say that Ollie Pearce’s goal was also well taken. Although maybe not yet 100 per cent fit, Ollie really does make a difference to our team.

Next up was the trip to Hampton & Richmond Borough last weekend.

THe Beveree was very cold as we gathered in the sunlight prior to kick off.

I thought we did very well in the first half and should have scored through Pearce when his attempt after going around the goalkeeper was hacked off the line.

THe second half was a different story, though. It got more and more difficult as Hampton continued to attack us and this meant we were playing deeper in our half.

Leading up to the goal,

it did look like Kristian Campbell was on the wrong end of a bad tackle but it was ignored by the referee.

THese are quite important and instrumental decisions going against us.

I try not to put our defeats down to the refereeing decisions usually, but on this occasion the result should have been goalless.

So we only have 11 games left of the season.

Considering we haven’t won many throughout the year, it looks doubtful we are to avoid the drop.

But, if we get a result tomorrow against St Albans City, it might start a bit of a run at home at least.

We, of course, played really well at St Albans earlier on this season.

If we replicate that display, we can easily repeat that result at the Lane.

With clubs around us getting results, now is the time for us to start putting results together if we are going to avoid relegation.

But I know the players really appreciate the support they are getting regardless – there were over 30 on the coach to Hampton, with more travelling up by other means.

Considering our league position I think that’s marvellous.
