Crime increase sparks anger RISING crime rates have been criticised by a Felpham councillor. Cllr Paul English said latest figures for Sussex Police showed the area's residents were suffering badly from a surge in offences. THe statistics show that 510 crimes in Felpham were recorded by police in the year from November 1, 2016 - an increase of 211, or just over 60 per cent, on the previous year.

Cllr English said: "THese figures are quite horrendous. THey are quite terrible in comparision with a number of other areas. It does give rise to a great deal of worry about what is happening since we have lost our police community support officers. "THese figures are the worst I have seen in all the years I have been coming here. "Every time we come to a meeting, the police are changing their system - and to

me it's not getting better. "Hopefully, as we are paying a great deal more money in the next financial year to the police, we will see a dramatic improvement when these figures next come out." Cllr English, an Arun district councillor for Felpham East, highlighted several of the statistics when he raised his concern. THey included incidents of domestic abuse up 23 to 83, public place violent

crime up 26 to 85, burglary up 29 to 47 and vehicle crime up 72 to 88. His comments at Tuesday's meeting of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee of parish, district and county councillors were backed by Cllr Chris Allington, chairman of Barnham Parish Council.
