Meeting call over park plans TOWN councillors have demanded a meeting to discuss the latest Bognor Regis regeneration plans.

THey agreed overwhelmingly on Monday to write to Arun District Council to seek a date for the session to enable them, and the town's residents, to find out the latest situation about the £3.5m proposals.

Arun is moving forward, as reported, with its scheme for linear park with

flats on the Hothamton car park off Queensway.

But town councillors said on Monday they did not believe the scheme had a lot of public support.

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said: “We should consider writing to Arun inviting them to meet us about the consultation so the public of Bognor Regis can raise their concerns about the linear park redevelopment of Hothamton.”

Arun’s consultation, which it stated showed support, concerned 120 people, he said.

But this contrasted with the views he found when he was fighting by-elections last month for the town and district councils.

He said: “I found no support for the linear park in the four weeks I was knocking on doors and canvassing in the by-elections.”

My Sister's House has bigger home AN EXPANDING charity opened its new Bognor Regis premises to the public.

THe bigger home of My Sister's House was enjoyed by some 100 visitors to mark International Women's Day. THe premises, in Clock Walk, off Sussex Street, have enabled the community interest company to expand the services it offers women.

Among those is a peer support group called Mother's Apart for mothers whose children have been adopted or fostered. It will start at 11am on March 24.

A new programme to overcome anxiety will also be launched later this month.

My Sister's House founder Julie Budge said: "We've found that a lot of women we support have high anxiety.

"THis will be a six-week rolling programme they can attend."

THe extra help is set to take the total number of women from around the area supported by the centre to some 500 for the first time. Last year, it reached 383.

One of My Sister's House's board members, Sylvie Collier, said: "THese are really nice premises. I have known Julie for a long time and the idea for this service floated into her head in 2014.

"I was its first chairman. Since then, it's been such a pleasure to see this place grow and develop. Coming in here has been life-changing for some of the women. THe service is really marvellous."

It's been about two years since My Sister's House opened in London Road.

THose premises of a 10ft X 8ft meeting room became increasing outgrown. THe

new premises measure 2,000sq ft and contain a counselling room, sizable offices, a training room and other facilities.

It has been made available for free through the Centric Projects UK charity, which works with landlords with empty premises.

Julie said: "I was paying rent for four premises last year. Being here means I can have more staff, offer more services and save money.

"We have 18 active volunteers, seven part-time staff and nine freelance workers for specific sessions."

At present, five peer support groups are held. THey include one about stronger futures for women in abusive relationships and habits to happiness for women with mental health problems.

Details about these services were on show at the open day last THursday.

Professionals, clients and supporters went along. Among them was Arun District Council chairman Cllr Jacky Pendleton.

She said: " I am so glad they have got this facility. It's long overdue.

"THis is a brilliant service. It is one that is sensitive to the needs of women. THose needs are sometimes different from the help available in other advice agencies. " Specially baked cakes were on sale as well as clothing by Gemma Brown's Hello Pickle brand with slogans like #ForAllWomen and Feelings Are Cool. She donated 20 per cent of the sales of T-shirts, jumpers and tote bags to My Sister's House.

THe London Road premises are being kept as a community hub and a cafe.

TOWN councillors have been urged to act to help homeless people in Bognor Regis.

A motion about the matter by Labour councillors Jan Cosgrove and Damien Enticott at Monday's meeting of Bognor Regis Town Council will be considered by its policy and resources committee.

THe motion asked the council to consider the approaches it might take, working with other local parishes and community groups, concerning the nature of homelessness and to make recommendations about the matter.

Cllr Cosgrove (Orchard) said: "Other parish councils are beginning to do

things successfully. We are not talking about taking Arun District Council's role. Damien Enticott has been doing a lot of work on his own."

Cllr Enticott (Hatherleigh) said: "THere are issues that do need to be raised with this council."

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said the council needed to ensure groups which worked with homeless, such as My Sister's House, Stonepillow and Granddad's Front Room, were also involved in any discussions.

Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Pevensey) said he expected the matter to take several meetings to produce a report.

f Myrtle Green with a photograph of Bill AN 83-YEAR-OLD woman is taking a leap of love to help raise money for charity.

Myrtle Green, from Bognor Regis, has signed up for a skydive to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Mrs Green said: “St Wilfrid’s were fantastic when my husband, Bill, had pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home with all of his family around him.

“Bill was a fighter. He was diagnosed on October 4, 2012, and told he had only six months to live. He kept going until December 29, 2015. Our daughter came back from Canada especially to be with him. It was lovely that all the family were able to say goodbye to him."

After Bill's death, Mrs Green found comfort in the walk and talk groups held by the hospice. Mrs Green is taking the 10,000 foot freefall parachute jump on March 24, almost a week before her 60th

wedding anniversary on March 29.

THe daredevil pensioner climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge last year when she went on a trip to visit her sister.

She said: “I always wanted to do it, so I combined it with a trip to see my sister who I hadn’t seen for 25 years.

"I have to admit I never thought of skydiving before, until I saw the newsletter from St Wilfrid’s where they were asking for volunteers.

"I thought, ‘I can do that’ as I am not frightened of heights or flying. My family have all been really supportive and the doctors said it was OK. I do walk every day to try and keep fit.”

Mrs Green has plans to take her ventures further by participating in an abseil down Spinnaker Tower next.

She said: “I have already decided I’m going to do the abseil next year, hopefully.

I’d like to raise the money for Angel Radio, where I volunteer.”

Mrs Green has volunteered on reception and taking callers' requests for the radio station for about 18 months. She said she had listened to the station for years and decided to volunteer to keep busy.

St Wilfrid's communications officer Helen Humphry said: "We are totally bowled over by this amazing lady. What an inspiration.

"THe money she raises will be used to help us continue providing end of life care to patients and support to their families and loved ones. It just goes to prove you are never too old!"

INTERNATIONAL football star Laura Rafferty told Felpham students to set goals for their future.

THe Brighton and Hove Albion and Northern Ireland professional player visited Felpham Community College to end its International Women's Day celebrations.

She delivered an inspirational assembly for students in Years 7 and 8 based on her life story and career.

She showed what could be achieved if the pupils were determined enough.

Laura followed this with a training session for a number of girls from all year groups in which she helped to develop their football and team working skills.

Izzie Govenden, one of the Year 7 students, said: "THe assembly which Laura led was inspirational.

"It has made me think I could do something like that now.

"As a year group, we all had a lot of questions.

"She was really good to talk to and enthusiastic about what we can achieve if we set our minds to it.

"I was picked to do the football as well and really enjoyed it. It gave us more time to talk to Laura and learn some new skills."

Year 11 student Amy Riddle said: "Laura was really nice and the football was a good session."

Her fellow Year 11 student, Ellie Shimmell, said: "It was good to try something different to what we do in PE football at school. It was much more intensive but fun."

As well as the visit from Laura, Felpham's students worked with several schools across Europe to celebrate the special day.

All students and staff were invited to sign a book from the college which will travel across Europe to raise awareness about gender equality.

Another event will take place during the week was the tutor time activity, Act of Craftivism, led by the student council to celebrate international women.

Students were asked to record a woman who inspired them and say way. THe responses will form a major school display next term.

Matthieu Cauchy-Duvel, one of the college's associate assistant headteachers, said: "We strive to give as many opportunities as possible to every single one of our students.

"It has been a great pleasure to see all the students and staff get involved in all the activities with the aim to raise awareness about gender equality."

Year 9 students Carol THomson, Ellen Kempson and Megan Wadey helped to organise the book.

THey said: "We have organised the book as we firmly believe in equality for all and educating others.

"Some of the students in our year and other years do not understand feminism and equality and this is a good chance for us to document our positive views and examples for others to read and understand."

THe book is going to the college's partner schools in France, Poland, Turkey and Spain.

` Plans for car park IMPROVEMENTS are planned for the car park at Barnham Community Hall.

THe hall's operator, Barnham Community Trust, wants to replace the gravel surface with 40 spaces in front of the building with a permeable surface of either Tarmac, block paving or a combination.

It is seeking planning approval from Arun District Council for the change. Trustee Chris Allington says in the planning application the gravel was used to cut costs when the hall was opened in May 2013.

"THe car park has proved to be a noise nuisance to the neighbours and a major accessibility impediment for those with mobility problems. THese issues have been difficult for the trust to manage.

"Furthermore, after four years the surface is now compacted and is not draining properly."

` Cricket pavilion PLANNING approval for a new pavilion has been received by Aldwick Cricket Club.

THe building for the club's ground in Brooks Lane, Bognor Regis, will replace one which suffered extensive fire damage.

Permission for the replacement was given by Arun District Council.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said the claimed level of support by Arun for the linear park would fail statistical scrutiny.

“You have to find the right target groups and go knocking on doors to do that," he said.

But Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said the linear park scheme had a large amount of backing among the public.

“THere has been public consultation.

THere is a lot of information out there from people. From all the feedback I am getting, people are quite happy with the linear park," he said.

THe motion to write to Arun was backed by 11 town councillors with none against and three abstentions.

Another vote which questioned Arun's decisions about the regeneration efforts was also backed, by 6-5 votes, with three abstentions.

THis was the demand by Labour's Orchard Ward councillor Jan Cosgrove for the district council to stage a competitive tender to find out the best developer for the crucial work.

He claimed Arun's current model of paying for the site to be developed into the park with flats and some retail space included in the development was flawed.

THis contrasted with the currently only known alternative developer, the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

Its ambitious scheme for a retail and leisure broadwalk on the Regis Centre site and a 1,100 seat theatre and

conference centre on Hothamton was subject to an informal public inquiry last month. THe decision is due in April.

“Arun should absolutely come clean on this matter. It has no money for regeneration of its own or identified any outside money," said Cllr Cosgrove.

“Where is the money coming from for regeneration? In my opinion, this is not regeneration, but redevelopment.

“THis is a very serious matter – the lack of clarity about the funding.

“THere should be a choice between schemes which the people of this town are not getting.

“THere are two developers. What I should like to suggest to councillors is to get it made clear why there has not so far been a competition for an invitation to tender for regeneration because that should now be happening. THere are two developers with separate plans.

“If that does take place, there will be a preferred developer – as with St Modwen.

THat developer has to pass certain tests, including financial viability.

“What I don’t want to see is this town left with no regeneration for the next 20 years and that is a huge fear."

An Arun spokeswoman said: "We will respond to any communication we receive from the town council in due course when they have contacted us."

Arun is also proposing a Winter Gardens project, with an expanded theatre, on the Regis Centre's seafront site.

Pharmacy celebrates move into bigger premises in West Meads AN OFFICIAL ceremony has been held to mark the opening of a bigger pharmacy in West Meads.

Staff and customers joined together on Monday to celebrate the new premises in THe Precinct. Pharmacy manager Gus Sikazwe said the move was only two doors along the shopping area but had made a big difference to the business.

"We were getting busier and the footfall was going up and we did not have the space to work efficiently. We kept getting in each others' way "Our new premises are probably half as big as the old ones and they have a storage room as well. We also have a much nicer consultation room now."

THe pharmacy employs eight staff and

has well over 100 customers a day.

THe opening was jointly performed

by Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall and Cllr Lilian Richardson, the chairman of Aldwick Parish Council.

After they declared the new pharmacy open, they cut a celebration cake in the nearby community hall.

Cllr Woodall said: "I used to be a resident on this estate from 1970-83.

I have seen so many changes in this precinct. I know all the staff are very happy in the new premises."

Cllr Richardson said: "West Meads has always been really important to the parish council. We are so glad to see this shop in all its bright glory opening up.

We want to keep shops in West Meads."

MP agrees to attend public meeting about homes plans

MP NICK Gibb is set to attend a public meeting in Pagham to hear residents' concerns about housing proposals.

Mr Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, has agreed to request from the PAGAM campaigners to take part in the meeting.

He told the Post: "I am happy to attend a meeting to listen to residents' concerns, at a date to be arranged."

Mr Gibb had been asked to go along to the meeting by Alan Pivett, vice-chairman of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement.

a focal point to campaign against plans which could see up 1,200 homes built on three sites in Pagham - Summer Lane, Hook Lane and Sefter Road.

THe locations have been allocated in Arun District Council's draft local plan for housing. A government planning inspector is compiled his report into the land use blueprint. It is expected to be completed in the next two months.

Mr Pivett said residents in the area felt their concerns had been ignored by Arun as it sought to meet a house-building target of some 1,000 homes a year for the next 13 years.

THis was due to the government's desire to see more homes built. But evidence existed of developers hoarding land to place the district council in the position where ever more planning permissions were needed.

PAGAM's concerns about the ability of the Pagham waste water treatment works to cope with the extra housing were wellfounded, Mr Pivet said.

He added: "Southern Water have constantly given notice to Arun that the works is at capacity. Yet, the developers fail to take note, relying on the premise that Southern Water cannot refuse connections to their services but always advise that it is a question of timing."

THe Post revealed last year that the works became overloaded with the existing flows of sewage to an extent 55 discharges of raw effluent were made in five years to Pagham Rife, which flows into the Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

` College celebrates VISITORS from 25 countries united to celebrate a very special anniversary at Chichester College.

Anglia Examinations marked its 25th anniversary with Chichester College with a two-day conference and celebration.

THe college took over ownership of Anglia in 1993, with the aim of expanding the examination body into a truly global organisation.

It has grown from offering several hundred English exams in Cyprus to delivering more than 120,000 in more than 40 countries in 2017.

Representatives from half of these, including delegates from Argentina, Bangladesh, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia and China came together in Chichester.

Liz Bangs-Jones, the chief executive of Anglia Examinations, said: "We have seen Anglia flourish over the past 25 years.

"It has grown and developed, offering a wide range of English qualifications to learners, of all ages and at all levels, across the globe.

"Each year we try to bring our representatives together, but this year was even more special because it marks a huge milestone in our history."

Julie Kapsalis, the managing director (commercial) at the Chichester College Group, said: "When we took over Anglia Examinations, it was among our first expansions and since then both the college and Anglia have gone from strength to strength.

"To see how far we have come together in the past 25 years is phenomenal and it is down to the hard work of Liz and her team."

Breakfast talk success RAPE help service founder Maggie Ellis told women in Bognor Regis media coverage had raised the profile of sexual abuse.

Maggie Ellis began Chichester-based charity Lifecentre in 2001 with a handful of helpers. It has grown to £450,000 annual turnover with 31 volunteers and has helped 5,000 men, women and children who have experienced rape and sexual abuse with face-to-face counselling.

Its national helpline has handled 20,000 calls and its country-wide textline has received more than 130,000 texts.

Maggie said: “When I started Lifecentre, rape was taboo in society. People did not talk about sexual abuse.

THat has changed now because of the media profile it has been given since Jimmy Savile. It is much more easily spoken about now. One in four women and one in eight men experience sexual abuse. It’s really important for them that it is a subject which can be spoken about.”

Maggie was the guest at the second Cherished

breakfast at Opengate Church in Victoria Drive.

About 85 women attended last Saturday’s event.

It saw Maggie take part in a question and answer session with joint organiser Sue Mills.

She told about how she set out turning her vision for Lifecentre into reality and her new role as an advisor to its board and a consultant to pass on her experiences to businesses.

“My personal Christian faith has sustained me in running the service and deal with some of the stories that I hear,” she said.

THe charity is the commissioned service to help all children in the county who have suffered sexual abuse or child sexual exploitation.

Julie Passmore, a joint organiser of the talk, said: “THe Cherished breakfasts are about bringing women together and supporting women from all walks of life – and Lifecentre does just that.”

THe breakfast was the third Cherished event, including a women’s day. THe next will be a breakfast on June 23 followed by an evening with comedianne Jo Enright on September 27.

Councillors backed a budget of £40,000 to defend an appeal this July by a developer against its refusal of planning permission for the homes on land west of Church Lane and south of Horsemere Green Lane.

THe decision was made at last week's full meeting of Arun District Council.

But Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said: "THis is an issue I have raised before.

Effectively, this council is throwing away £40,000.

"We find ourselves in the ridiculous situation where councillors on the development control committee voted against this having previously adopted and approved the local plan and this is one of the strategic sites (for housing).

"So, these councillors voted against our own local plan.

"Now, it's going to appeal, which we will almost certainly lose and we will have thrown away £40,000 of council taxpayers' money.

"It's about time somebody in the majority group of this council took responsibility for these issues because, clearly, nobody is at the moment."

Development control committee chairman Cllr Ricky Bower said Cllr Oppler's comments contradicted the Lib Dems' stance at the recent budget meeting.

"On this particular issue, the remit of the committee is to ensure that planning development that is delivered is delivered in a manner which has the least impact on

the environment and the infrastructure in the vicinity.

"Following on the logic of what Cllr Oppler is saying, we might as well fold up the development control committee and permit all the planning applications.

"THe £40,000 will be worth it. Since the decision was taken, the transport study update has come forward which has recognised the Oystercatcher junction as a significant safety hazard and one which needs to be addressed.

"THis is a good opportunity to try and get it addressed through this decision."

Cllr Gillian Brown, the council's leader, said the committee was right to refuse applications it considered would harm the area.

"It's extraordinary that every strategic development in the local plan should be approved whatever its impact on the environment. It's very difficult being a member of the development control committee making these decisions.

"You are looking at each application on its merits and do your best for our residents. We are not here to approve anything which is not a sustainable development."

THe committee refused the housing proposal by Mulgrave Properties last August because its members said the proposal failed to do enough to lessen the severe impact of the development on the safety of the A259's Oystercatcher and Comet Corner junctions.

THe developer wanted to build up to 300 homes, with shops and a building with permission for a 'non-residential institution' on the 27 hectare site.

THe offences against the first woman occurred in December, 2016, and the offence against the second woman happened in July, 2016.

Following the second incident, Seafish was issued with a closure notice on December 22, 2016, by Arun District Council for being a premises associated with nuisance and disorder.

Parker, of Poulters Lane, West Tarring, will also be a registered sex offender for life.

Selfish dog owners will face bigger fines for pets' fouling FINES for littering and dog fouling around Bognor Regis are being increased by up to 20 per cent.

Arun District Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown has approved the new charges. THey will take effect from May 15 at the start of the council's new contract with East Hampshire District Council. THe new fines will be £100 for dog fouling, dogs and dog exclusion offences, cut to £75 for prompt payment, compared to the current £80 or £50.

For littering, the new charge will be £80, reduced to £65, against the present £80 or £50.

A FORMER bar operator in Bognor Regis has been jailed for sexually assaulting two women on the premises.

Sean Parker, 42, was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday to eight-and-a-half years' imprisonment when he appeared by video-link from prison.

He had been found guilty on March 1 of one count of raping a 22-year-old woman and two counts of sexual assault.

One was against the rape victim and the other was on another woman aged 32. THe offences took place at the music venue, Seafish, which Parker ran in Aldwick Road.

Detective Constable Gaye Moore said: "THese offences took place in very similar circumstances.

"On both occasions, the women had been attending music events at the bar and stayed on, with others, as guests of Parker after the music ended.

` Parking increase PRICES of parking on roads in central Bognor Regis are to increase.

West Sussex County Council wants to put up the fees by up to five per cent.

THe new yearly charges will come into force from April 3.

Residents' permits in the controlled parking zone will go up by £2 to £43 for the first permit.

Subsequent permits will cost £86 compared to the current £83.

Permits for non-residents will increase from £250 to £260.

THe two-hour visitors' permits will be 35p against the present 40p.

Daily and weekly charges will go up as well, along with annual permits for carers and traders.

Pay and display charges for parking on the roads in the zone will rise on May 1.

THey include roads like Belmont Street, Lennox Street, Lyon Street and Sudley Road and the cost will be 50p for 30 minutes and £1 for an hour compared to 30p for 20 minutes and 90p an hour.

In Marine Drive West, the hourly price will increase from 50p to 55p.

` Council numbers NUMBERS of councillors on Bognor Regis Town Council's committees are to continue to reflect the strengths of each political party represented on the local authority.

Members of all parties agreed on Monday to keep the proportionality system which was introduced in 1990 to stop any majority group on the council filling committees with its councillors.

Hair stylist Jesse is cut above rest A BOGNOR REGIS hair stylist has won a prestigious competition.

Jesse Courtney has been selected as the apprentice of the year in the contest's final at the L'Oreal Academy in London last Friday.

He won his regional heat at Chichester College and went on to beat five other finalists. THe judging panel of celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford and guest London stylists gave him the top accolade in the cut and colour category.

Jesse said he created his winning look with a blend of browns and blonds.

"I love creating the right look for my client. I wanted a soft wearable, on trend blend of colour," he said.

Jesse is a level three apprentice at Richard Pearce Hairdressing in Aldwick.

Salon owner Richard Pearce said everyone there was proud of Jesse.

"He's done brilliantly to win," he said.

"Jesse is a very talented stylist and he put a lot of thought and preparation into the look he created.

"THe finish looked beautiful, with skilful use of colour and stunning waves."

Jesse is set to become a fully-fledged stylist at the salon in Aldwick Street early in the summer.

Purple pier for a special day PENSION campaigners were delighted to see some important buildings in Bognor Regis turn purple for one night.

THe Women Against State Pension Inequality members were helped by the owners of four premises to mark last THursday's international women's day.

From 6pm, the town's pier, THe QEII in THe Steyne, THe Waterloo Inn in Waterloo Square and THe William Hardwicke in the High Street were bathed in purple lights.

Angela Taylor, a committee member of the Bognor Chichester and South Coast branch of WASPI, said they were grateful to the owners for taking part.

"THis enabled some of the town's most iconic buildings to be lit up for

International Women's Day. We wanted to raise awareness of the day and also the fact that it was 100 years ago that some women gained the right to vote thanks to the suffragettes."

THe WASPI branch also held an information session last Friday at the Regis Centre. Founder Jill Robertson said: "THere were about 15 people here.

"We were telling women about the protest letters they can write to the Department for Work and Pensions about their pensions. Two or three of the women said they had been able to progress a bit more to the next step."

WASPI is fighting for 1950s born women whose state pension age is rising to 65.

Students' work on stage and page earns them praise and recognition CREATIVE students at Felpham Community College have proved they are made of the write stuff.

An outstanding 82 of the pupils have been celebrated for publication in a national writing competition.

THat is almost five times the number who were accepted into last year's competition by Young Writers.

THe national company aims to encourage young people to engage in creative writing. It has been working with schools, parents and young writers since 1991.

Felpham students in years 7, 8 and 9 have taken part in a number of their recent competitions under the guidance of Stephen Castle, one of its teachers of English. He said: "Our students worked really hard on their submissions. To have 82 stories published from Felpham College is a great achievement.

"Both the college and Young Writers were impressed with the ideas and enthusiasm our students have shown and the exciting finished stories."

THis year saw students required to write a short story based on a Stranger Sagas theme. THe competition received 20,000 entries and the 82 chosen from Felpham will be published in its regional compilation book Stranger Sagas - Surrey and Sussex edition 2018.

THis will be sent to the British Library and will be available for students to buy.

One of those whose work will appear in print is Year 8 student Ruby Bowditch.

She said: "I am really proud to have my

work in print and my mum is definitely going to buy a copy of the book to show my family and to keep for the future.

"It was fun working on the story and I am looking forward to entering next year as well."

One of the students who took part, Alexandra Holland, said: "We have been complimented on how professional our piece was this year, praise that was great to hear."

` Shoplifter jailed A SHOPLIFTER has been jailed for eight weeks for stealing from a Bognor Regis shop.

Peter Nicholls, 52, of Church Street, Littlehampton, was caught on CCTV stealing bottles of spirits from Morrisons in Bedford Street on March 3 and 4. He was arrested by police on the second day after being detained by staff.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "He pleaded guilty to two counts of theft from a shop and going equipped for theft and was sentenced at Crawley Magistrates' Court on March 5."

Nicholls was given an eight-week prison sentence for each charge, to run concurrently.

` Break-in attempts ATTEMPTS were made to burgle properties in neighbouring villages on consecutive days. THe wouldbe burglars tried to break into a property in Cropthorne Drive, Climping, overnight on February 27.

An attempt was then made to break into a property in Cherry Avenue, Yapton, the next night. No items were taken in either incident.

Cycle group marks five years FIVE years of campaigning for cyclists are being marked with a public meeting in Felpham.

Bognor Regis Cycle Forum wants to bring a fresh impetus to its work for a safer life on two wheels up to 2023.

Forum chairman Dave Barton said: "As part of its five-year celebrations, the forum is holding an open evening to talk with members of the public.

"THe forum would love to hear from those who cycle now and those who would like to cycle more - whether for leisure, good health, commuting, wellbeing or indeed any of the many benefits that cycling has to offer."

THe meeting will take place from 7pm8.30pm on March 27 at St Mary's Hall, Grassmere Close, Felpham.

Since 2013, the forum's members have campaigned on a range of issues to make cycling easier and safer.

THey have included helping to achieve the shared use of the promenade with pedestrians, calling for improved road cycling routes and off-road routes and, in particular, highlighting deficiencies in the A259 Bognor Regis-Chichester route.

THis has included providing details of alternative off-road routes between the two areas, via Merston and Runcton, improving the national cycle network route 2 through Bognor Regis and submitting a range of desired cycle routes across the area to West Sussex County Council.

THe forum has also been involved with the travel plan for the new Bognor Regis campus of the University of Chichester and it has negotiated enhancements on the new A259 Felpham to Climping cycle route. Mr Barton said working with the other members of the forum showed the

benefits that using such a joint approach could bring.

He said: "It is empowering to work with a collective of like-minded people on behalf of the wider cycling community.

"Long gestation periods and partnerships with bureaucracies brings its share of frustration but it's great to see communities taking the lead in improving the cycling environment."

As a voluntary group, Bognor

Regis Cycle Forum seeks to work in partnership with other keen members of the community and with other groups in the area as well as parish councils, Arun district and West Sussex county councils.

It is compiling a wish-list of improvements in its area, primarily for those who wish to use a bike but also for the benefit of all residents.

Sustrans, the national body promoting a national cycling network, is also

seeking to join up the gaps in route two, between Dover and Cornwall, between Littlehampton and Chichester, through the Bognor Regis area.

Spokesman Chris Sprules said: "We really value the support of the forum in identifying safer and more enjoyable routes through the town."

THe forum usually meets six to eight times a year and is part of West Sussex Cycle Forum.

New venue is match for old Pavilion look LOCAL history fan Chris Burstow has highlighted a piece of the past of Bognor Regis which could be revived for the future.

Mr Burstow noticed the similarity between the look of one of the town's most fondly remembered venues with the appearance of the theatre and conference centre proposed by the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

He was preparing to give a talk to a group in the town when he came across the type used by printers for posters for the former Pavilion.

THis contained an outline of the building's frontage - and it is a close match to the building put forward for the Hothamton site as part of the project's regeneration scheme.

Mr Burstow did a double take when he compared the look of the two buildings.

"I was struck by how similar the two buildings looked. I read the latest article in the Post about the regeneration scheme which contained an illustration of the planned venue - and then found the type block."

THe masthead for the posters was used to keep residents up to date with the cast of acts which appeared there.

It was passed on to the Bognor Regis Local History Society, which runs the museum, years ago for safe keeping.

THe original Pavilion was sited a few metres away from where the new centre is planned to be built if the proposals are agreed by a government planning inspector and if permission is granted by the land owner, Arun District Council, which has its own plans for the site.

THe 20th century building was an aircraft hanger built for the Norman THompson Aircraft Company in Middleton. A series of cancelled orders saw the company collapse and the former Bognor Urban District Council bought the building for about £17,000 in 1919. It was re-erected in the town centre and quickly gained a good reputation.

"My mum and dad met there and my mum said it had a beautiful sprung floor for dancing," said museum curator Mr Burstow.

Various artistes, dances and exhibitions brought audiences through its doors. It could accommodate 2,500 dancers in its main hall of 142ft X 173ft.

But a fire in its right hand tower broke out on the night of July 12, 1948, and the council decided to close the building after months of discussion.

It was demolished in 1949 or 1950, according to different reports.

THe museum, in West Street, opens for this year at 10am on March 24.

POLICE Community Support Officer Richard Moorey, based at Chichester Police Station, has specifically designed a presentation that highlights the common tactics used by scammers and fraudsters.

He talks about scam mail, courier fraud and computer fraud as well as how to deal with door to door callers, rogue traders and unwanted callers.

THe presentation takes between 45 minutes to an hour and there is an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

He is available to visit any groups across the Arun and Chichester districts.

Pupils shown science goes with a big bang HAND-BUILT racing cars, exploding crisp packets and superhero skills were on show at a science event in Bognor Regis.

THe exhibits at the latest BigBang@ Butlin's were aimed at helping hundreds of pupils from around the county learn more about the subject.

Businesses, colleges and universities showcased their wares to enthuse the potential engineers of tomorrow and open their eyes to future careers.

THe occasion proved to be a big success.

More than 550 primary and secondary pupils went away with big smiles and a realisation that science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects were far from boring.

One of the organisations behind the event was the Coastal West Sussex Economic Partnership. Caroline Wood, a director, said: "BigBang is now in its third year locally and it is really going from strength to strength.

"From exploding crisp packets to superhero powers in augmented reality, there were plenty of fun-filled activities which showed STEM subjects can be fun.

"It is only by investing in our young people and giving them the skills they need to thrive that we will be able to raise the economic performance of the coast.

"I hope that some of the hundreds of students who came today will be the engineers of tomorrow.

Last THursday's Big Bang formed part of Coastal STEMfest and was delivered

by STEM Sussex, the science outreach department of the University of Brighton.

With plenty of interactive hands-on activities and a fun informative show by Science Made Simple experts, businesses were given the chance to showcase the exciting career opportunities that STEM can unlock.

Charlie Allen, a graduate engineer at Shoreham-based engineering firm Ricardo, was one of those with an exhibit on behalf of 25 businesses in the coastal area. It enabled the young visitors to create a racing car before they tested it in a wind tunnel.

Charlie said: "It was great to see so many kids involved and getting excited about STEAM careers.

"THe BigBang shows the practical aspects of what engineering and science can bring in the real world rather than just experiments in the classroom. THat knowledge can make a difference to the world."

BigBang is one of the science events along the coast backed by the Coastal West Sussex Partnership of business, education and public sector members with contributions from Adur, Arun, Worthing and Chichester councils.

THe events are also supported by West Sussex County Council, Adur and Worthing Business Partnership and the

Sussex Learning Network.

It was set up to counter the trend shown in statistics that the number of students taking science-related A-levels in West Sussex declined across all subjects between 2012/13 and 2015/16, particularly those taking maths.

National statistics show the same situation exists with GCSEs, while participation rates in higher education across coastal West Sussex are poor.

A gender gap also exists - with only one in four STEM graduates being women.

Leaders from across the private, public and education sector said it was important to act now with events like BigBang to avoid a future skills shortage.

Geoff Edwards, the chairman of the Coastal West Sussex Partnership, said: "BigBang is all about getting youngsters to understand that science and maths are interesting subjects.

"THey are relevant to the workplace and relevant to opening up opportunities in the future."

Richard Hopkins, of leading agricultural business Fargro of Littlehampton, said: "Events like today are important for the industry as recruitment is very difficult.

"We want to encourage local people to understand the opportunities on their doorstep. THere's a lot of science and technology involved in agriculture. So, it's important we get in at the ground level so they know what we offer.

"Young people can bring innovation to what is quite a traditional industry."

A NEW initiative has been launched to bring young and old Eastergate residents together.

Nippers and Slippers is a social event at Eastergate CofE Primary School for pupils and the elderly to socialise for an hour.

Father Martin Powell, the vicar of Barnham, Aldingbourne and Eastergate, set up the group with four older people after seeing a television documentary about children visiting nursing homes. He said: "I thought it would be a really good idea after taking inspiration from the programme I watched.

"THis is just the first session which has been really good. It will build up more through word of mouth. It's great to see the generations learning from one another.

THe older people don't always get a lot of interaction and it's such a joy to see them smiling and to make the children learn through fun."

During the first session at the Church Lane school on Monday, the primary school pupils played parachute

games and read books.

Headteacher Catherine Wood believed it was a great opportunity for the school. She said: "It's a really good idea to bring generations together. For some of the children, they live far away or don't have any grandparents and they only spend time with their own peer group or immediate family.

"THis gathering broadens their experiences and builds on their confidence."

Shirley Renton Rose said: "Two of my children came to this school and my mother was a secretary of the school during the war. It's really fun being with the youngsters, some of whom are younger than my own grandchildren.

I would like to come back."

THeo Harris, who was reading with Shirley, said: "I have really enjoyed today. Playing with the balls was my favourite. I like spending time with older people."

Sonny Barker was reading with Bill Collins from Woodgate. He said: "I have enoyed today. We have read

Paddington Bear. I'd like to see Bill again at another Nippers and Slippers meeting."

Bill added: "I'd like to come back, perhaps join in once a month. I have three grandchildren and one great grandchild. THey don't live locally so I don't get the opportunity to see them regularly, maybe just twice a year."

` Traffic collision RESIDENTS of a North Bersted street fear a traffic collision could be a sign of things to come.

Chalcraft Lane resident Michelle Bean was the first person on the scene after the collision last THursday morning.

She said: "THe residents are objecting to the proposal of an additional 2,000 houses, plus vehicles, being built on this road.

"Everyday, the residents witness near misses. With additional vehicles...we are not long away from witnessing a serious, or possibly, fatal accident."

Chalcraft Lane was closed by police for several hours after the collision. It took place at the junction with Central Drive.

Arun District Council has earmarked farmland north of Chalcraft Lane for the new homes among the development proposals in its land use blueprint of the local plan.

Town's Rat Pack makes its debut A HOME town version of the Rat Pack was one of the highlights of the first big band rehearsal session in Bognor Regis.

Singers Pete Agate and Kev Wittering recreated the sound and the style of the famous fifties musicians at the latest session by Rox music and arts charity.

THis saw big band fan and musician Mike Bosley bring together top-class players at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road to form the Bognor Regis version of a big band.

A Rox spokesman said: "Fourteen musicians and four vocalists covered sounds ranging from the 40s through to the 70s and beyond.

"THey filled the evening with such style that everyone who heard will always remember.

HIGHLIGHTING the items that can be recycled was one of the aims of a waste event held in Bognor Regis.

THe West Sussex waste education trailer was parked on the seafront to pass on the message about how to cut down the amount of rubbish being thrown away.

Adam Swain, a West Sussex County Council waste prevention events advisor, said halfway through the visit: "We have had a steady stream of visitors. THere has been lots of interest and I would say dozens of people have come along.

"THey have been told on the national

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, is responsible for its weekly waste collections.

He said: "National waste week is a great campaign for everyone to get involved with. It raises awareness of the importance of reducing waste and recycling more in a way that people can understand and remember. THe environment is a key issue for us all and we'd like to ask residents to think about how they can reduce their waste and recycle more."

Half a dozen helps to keep your skin looking beautiful KEEPING your hormones in balance will help you look radiant and feel great.

As we ladies reach a certain age, things start to change. Our moods may be a little lower than normal, we can start to get a few flushes and the skin can appear to be less plump! All signs of changes in our hormones. But what can we do about it and what are the best foods to eat to give us a helping hand in balancing these hormones naturally?

Keeping hormones on an even keel isn't a matter of aimlessly attempting to eat well. THese six key foods proactively balance your hormones, which can plump up skin, ward off wrinkles and even prevent acne, mood swings and lethargy: 1 - Quinoa: THis grain has become so popular, and for good reason too. It's packed with protein,

magnesium and phosphorus, and it has a hormonestabilizing trick up its sleeve, too.

Unlike other grains, which are higher on the glycemic index and can raise your blood sugar, quinoa is a complex carb high in protein, so it helps keep blood sugar stable.

THis prevents a domino effect where elevated blood sugar triggers higher insulin and, in turn, higher androgen levels. Try swapping grains like bread and white rice for quinoa. Half a cup of quinoa at least twice a week will ensure you’ll get the perks (more won't hurt).

2 - Almonds: If your skin is going nuts, turn to almonds. THey increase levels of the adiponectin hormone, which regulates blood sugar levels so you won't set off the increased insulin–increased androgen ripple effect. Studies have proven eating almonds shrinks levels of 'male' hormones like testosterone that can make your skin look drier and thinner. Eleven almonds a day [one serving size] or more is a great addition to your daily regime.

3 - Avocados: THese green beauties and other good fats, like olive oil and coconut oil, support the manufacture of healthy levels of cholesterol, a key component in hormone synthesis. THis will enable your skin to release and circulate the hormones it needs so it can stay healthy - and that's not avocados' only beauty benefit.

Extra bonus: Salmon's anti-inflammatory properties can help calm skin eruptions like acne and eczema, too. Aim for a four-ounce serving of salmon twice a week.

5 - Eggs: If you're an egg whites only type of person, please understand this - though the yolk has got a bad reputation for being high in cholesterol, the variety it contains, HDL cholesterol, is actually the type your body needs to create hormones, leading to softer, more supple skin, and better balanced hormones.

6 - Greens: Don’t forget to eat your broccoli, spinach

and kale. Dark leafy greens contain the natural compounds sulforaphane and indole-3 carbinol, which improve your liver's ability to metabolize estrogen. And trust me, you want estrogen - it helps increase suppleness, which keeps your skin looking firm and taut, and bumps up blood supply to the skin.

As estrogen levels decrease, everything shrinks and pulls in. Help keep your levels up with at least half a cup of dark leafy greens per day, to keep the mood swings away!

MAJESTIC by name, somewhat majestic by nature - this wine warehouse company seems to have carved out a niche market for quality wines within the £10 price bracket, with the customary proviso that you purchase at least six bottles, and has, furthermore, launched its own-label range, namely the Definition series.

Off I duly headed to my local Majestic store in Chichester and began by selecting the 2016 Definition Chardonnay reduced this month to £9.99 of southern French provenance coming from Limoux in the Languedoc, a propitious area to focus upon if you are endeavouring to track down quality French Chardonnay outside of

Burgundy.

THe altitude of the vineyards ensures the wines here are balanced with a fresh acidity and rich, creamy honey aromas and toasty rich flavours of ripe peach characterise this wine - one that would be an ideal complement to a roast chicken dish.

My next two whites currently retail for just £7 99 and the 2016 Luis Felipe Edwards Gran Reserva Chardonnay from the Valle De Casablanca (Oh Humphrey!) proved to be easy drinking with toasty, buttery Chardonnay fruit on the palate and a creamy softness, atypical of usual Chilean Chardonnay!

THe 2016 Araldica Gavi was punctuated by light citrus flavours and a touch of lime and was pleasingly fresh and clean on the palate and a nice light- bodied apéritif.

My last two white wine choices involved pushing the boat out in pecuniary terms, commencing with, at the offer price of £11.99, a 2015 Domaine Sainte Rose 'La Nuit Blanche' Roussanne.

THe grapes are picked at night and hence the sleepless night reference and

this wine is made by an English couple, Ruth and Charles Simpson, in southern France, and is indubitably a wine that will not leave you indifferent!

Aged in oak , this wine is rich in texture and oozes peach and white blossom flavours and will either enchant you or overpower you!

My final white selection was that of a 2016 Domaine Cordier PouillyFuissé made from vines grown in both Fuissé village and Vergisson and, although at the lofty price of £18.99,

is a veritably sumptuous , full-bodied style of Pouilly- Fuissé with creamy, ripe tropical peach and the use of toasty oak affords a long harmonious finish alongside the sheer intensity of flavour - un vrai délice and an ideal accompaniment to a Stroganoff dish!

My red wine bargain of the week has to be the guv'nor, a new sort of wine coming from a range of Spanish regions including Toro, La Mancha and Valdepeñas plus an oak component.

THe front label only features the brand

name and no vintage is given - this red blend is soft and fruity with rich, ripe sweet red and dark fruit flavours to the fore and, at £6.99 an ideal party wine and well worth a punt!

My final selection, at an offer price of just £10.99, was the 2014 Château Côtes de Blaignan Médoc, whose lovely bouquet enticed me to imbibe and the lively fruit and hints of black pepper are now evident in 2018 and this wine should not disappoint!

Community News & Views A TEAM of builders got on their bikes to raise money for a new facility in Tangmere for people with dementia.

THe seven biking builders, pictured below, from Ascia Construction, successfully completed their route in aid of Dementia Support and its dementia support hub.

THey cycled from Rowlands Castle through Kingley Vale, Goodwood and Boxgrove to Tangmere, where they are building the hub for the charity. It took them just over three hours and their sponsorship came to ÂŁ1,652.

Many of the building team had a personal drive to complete the ÂŁ1.74m hub and help the charity as some members of their families have dementia.

Tim Brown, the site manager, said: "It went really well. We were very lucky with the weather and had a great journey down to the hub.

"It was great to see everyone turn up to welcome us over the finishing line. We were caked in mud and appreciated the hot drinks and cake."

THe company's managing director, Neil Cole, said: "We can see what a great charity Dementia Support is and how they enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for local people living with dementia.

"As a local business, it is great to be supporting a local charity, especially as we are already so involved with creating this new facility."

Lesley-Anne Lloyd, Dementia Support's head of corporate fundraising, said the charity appreciated the builders' support.

"THank you to our amazing biking builders for fundraising for the dementia support hub.

"It means a great deal to us all and we are extremely grateful.

We have a great partnership with Ascia and we appreciate their hard work and dedication to our customers."

FIREFIGHTERS and police officers across Sussex have joined together to pledge their support for gender equality.

West Sussex, East Sussex and Surrey fire and rescue services and Sussex Police combined as part of the global HeForShe movement.

THis is a global campaign created by the United Nations and calls for men to take action against inequality towards women.

It is supported by 1.3 billion people.

Representatives from the services joined together at Hove Community Fire Station last THursday to make the pledge and raise the flag in support of HeForShe. Dawn Whittaker, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's chief executive, said: "Standing up and standing out isn't always easy.

"Everyone benefits from HeForShe, that's why it works. Chris Blackwell was the first male fire officer in the UK to make an organisational pledge to the HeForShe campaign.

"What that means practically is that he is saying to his workforce that he expects people to support each other, not just when reducing risk, but at every opportunity. Who wouldn't want to stand up for that?"

Cllr Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "It's so encouraging to see leaders from these three counties coming together to pledge their support for women's equality.

"THis year marks 100 years since the first women were granted the vote in Britain.

"So much progress has been made since then and I believe thay, by working together, we will continue to see many positive changes."

ABOUT 80 West Sussex apprentices have celebrated their achievements at Chichester Cathedral.

THeir attended the ceremony during national apprenticeship week with businesses, friends and family members. THe apprentices, pictured above by Marston Robing, ranged from those in social care and digital marketing to engineering and technical theatre.

Cllr Richard Burrett, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for education and skills, said: "I would like to congratulate all of this year's graduates and the businesses that have supported them throughout their apprenticeships.

"I think it's great to recognise what can be achieved from an apprenticeship.

"For instance, a level 7 apprenticeship is equivalent to a master's degree. It's a fantastic opportunity to earn and learn.

"So, we are hoping to see this figure increase further in

MP NICK Gibb has praised Slindon College after he paid it a visit.

THe college is an independent school which specialises in children with specific special educational needs.

LIBRARY users in Bognor Regis were given the chance to find out more about a hospice.

Two representatives from St Wilfrid's Hospice took part in the town library's first session of a month-long series of special events during this month.

Jack Todd, one of the hospice's champion ambassadors, was joined by the ambassadors' co-ordinator, Mandy Shipley, for the event last Wednesday morning, pictured below.

Mr Todd said the two hours had enabled them to spread the word about the work of the hospice in Chichester and the chances which existed for people to help them.

"We've had quite a few people interested," he said. "We were at Willowhale Library in Rose Green on Monday and I would say we had 100 per cent contact with everyone who went there during that time."

Mr Todd has been a volunteer for the hospice for 12 years. "When I retired, I wanted to find something to serve the community. THe hospice has got such a good name it seemed a good place to come to.

"It's very rewarding and quite a privilege to talk to people about the hospice. I also take part in a lot of bucket collections for it in Chichester.

"THere are a large number of people who have had relations who have gone into the hospice or been cared for it by at home.

"THe hospice has 250 volunteers and there are another 250 in its shops. I think it's the volunteers who give the hospice its warmth."

Hospice communications officer Helen Humphry said: "We often find that people are aware of St Wilfrid's but have limited understanding of exactly what we do.

"In order to address this issue, we have developed an interesting and interactive 30-minute presentation that is delivered by a volunteer hospice ambassador."

Since the first ambassador was appointed, they have given the presentation to more than 1,300 people in 80-plus events.

THe libraries will be hosting plenty of events during the rest of this month among the 40 arranged.

THey are complemented by displays of mood-boosting books and a selection of self-help guides.

HISTORY will be brought to life at a Slindon church next week.

Two historians will lead a history afternoon about the centuries-old life of St Mary's Church in the village.

Dr Andrew Foster, an ecclesiastical historian, will lead the session with Martin Jones, a specialist in Victorian church architecture and founding member of the Slindon History Society Phil Berry.

Dr Foster has written extensively about the clergy, cathedrals and cathedrals of the early modern period and most recently about Slindon.

THe event - called A Passion for Modernity: The Victorian Restoration of St Mary's & the work of TG Jackson - will take place in the church at 2pm on March 24.

THe Victorians changed the look of the English church, with the new ones they built, and the ancient churches they 'restored'.

In 1865/66, THomas Jackson was commissioned to restore and modernise a neglected medieval parish church in Slindon.

THat work transformed the church and is still important today.

Jackson went on to become a lauded Victorian architect whose work included buildings in Oxford.

THe afternoon will cover a significant era in the life of the parish church and the early work of an eminent Victorian.

Magazine offers review of town 70 years ago Articles provide an insight into life for residents in 1948 I WAS recently sorting through a pile of paperwork and came across a copy of a magazine that I had been given. It was entitled Bognor Regis & District Review, and was a monthly news magazine for the family, dated June, 1948, and cost 6d (2.5p) with postage 3 half pence (1.5p).

During the period from the 1940s to the 1960s, there was a wide range of newsletters and leaflets published aimed at various age groups and sections of the community, all of which contained very interesting information.

THerefore, I thought I would have a look through this 32-page A4 publication to see what life was like then and some of the views expressed. Many newsworthy items of today we think of as new have appeared in publications over the years.

THere was a request being made for Guide leaders as there was a list of girls wanting to join the Guides and Brownies. Another problem was the lack of space for the various groups to meet. However, for 15 days a month, Guides had use of a piece of land in Hotham Park where they could enjoy ‘outdoor activities and learn practical campcraft'.

Another report told of ‘Essex Road – Trim and Neat,’ this followed a long period of the road being considered 'untidy'. THe reporter continued that when he visited the area it could

be ‘termed a model working-class road'.

THis report concluded with mention of posters in houses and children talking about a forthcoming missionary exhibition and their choir practice.

Elsewhere, there is an article on a new youth venture, that of the 39 Club. It tells of a group of boys and girls aged from 16 who had got together and formed a mixed youth club for the Westloats Lane area. Apparently, before this there was no club available for girls - just a church fellowship.

THe name, according to the article, came about because the youngest member was 16 and the oldest 23 and when added together made 39. At this time, the club was going to meet at St Peter’s Hall, in Westloats Lane. It would appear the provision for young people was a concern, as it is today.

One article made me smile, as it was about the suffix of Regis. Remember, this is 1948 not so long after receipt of ‘Regis'. THe Bognor Regis telephone exchange had been asked for a telephone number in Bognor and was advised there was no such exchange.

THey were advised there was only Bognor Regis. Someone then remarked ‘Plain old Bognor was good enough for their grandfather, then it was good enough for them.’ THe reporter was then regaled with the comment that we

need not be so proud of the fact that the King came here, for it was the spoiling of the town for old families.

It made Bognor into a ‘tripping spot'. THere were other remarks about the use of ‘Regis’ and the fact the town and council had not really used it fully. One comment I liked was that ‘there was not always room to squeeze the ‘Regis’ on to all the bus timetables'.

Another page had the headline of ‘Why holidaymakers chose Bognor Regis'. Apparently, in 1948, the town was receiving hundreds of letters from people living in Leicester and it was reported that Bedford and Nottingham accents could be heard in the town.

According to the chairman of the Bognor Regis Extended Season Committee, this was due to the limited amount of money available for advertising and they concentrated on the Midlands. THey advised that for 1949 they were thinking of advertising in other towns and ‘may even open an information bureau in one of the towns'.

One of the lead articles had a request for the Highways Committee, that of supplying more seats ‘on behalf of the elderly and infirm’ near bus stops. It continues with the remark ‘that it is difficult having to stand for perhaps 10mins whilst waiting for a bus’ – I am sure you would have some comments on this remark.

THe lead viewpoint talks about service and what it means and how we should all engage for the benefit of the area. ‘THe prosperity of the county depends largely upon the holiday business which rests in a very special degree on service' it stated and concluded ‘none of these commodities should be in short supply'.

THese leaflets, or magazines, are really

interesting, especially when they provide details of personalities within the area. THere are a number of small reports on people like Mr Neale, the donkey man, who had ceased to work on the seafront.

THe question was also asked as to whom was the oldest builder in the town and the answer at that time was Mr Fred Greenway, a partner in the firm of Greenway and Gray.

Carnival week was claimed to be a triumph, as was also the Pagham Carnival event. THere was also introduction of another miniature railway on the east car park apparently ‘after 40 years.’

Jocelyn Hansford was chosen as the first person to be immortalised as the ‘Bognor Personality – No 1’. THis provides us with background information on this famous family who still have premises here in West Sussex, albeit now in Chichester, rather than here in Bognor Regis.

I thought the final report was interesting for a variety of reasons. It is headed ‘Circus Lions – No more trouble than Actors and Actresses'.

THis was the story of the visit to the town of a circus which was to visit the Pier THeatre.

THe animals that were to perform included lions and these, apparently, roared when it was going to rain, much to the delight of the company as this meant more people would attend the circus if it rained. In the morning, they would exercise on the stage, while the monkeys went out on to the beach, much to the amazement of people strolling along the seafront. THe dogs and geese also slept on the premises, though the horses and ponies were taken to a local stable for the night. THere are so many comments that could be made about this event, but I will leave that to you, the reader – just remember this was in 1948, 70 years ago.

Derby day win puts battling Blues PostSport in pole position for top four place CHICHESTER RFC will be eyeing up a strong finish to the season as they look to seal a top four spot.

A poor run and injury crisis around the turn of the year put paid to any hopes of the Blues sealing an immediate return to the national league. But recent weeks have seen Scott Ashley's side find their form, chalking up their third win in four with a nail-biting victory over Brighton at Oaklands Park last weekend.

Despite being a man down and in the face of an onslaught from the visitors, Chi held on for a memorable 26-23 bonus point win.

With just five games of the season to go, that victory over London One South's form side puts space between the fourth-placed Blues and the chasing pack.

Chi can all but seal their position with victory at seventh-place London Cornish in west London tomorrow (12.30pm).

THey head to Wandsworth in high spirits after victory over their Sussex rivals.

Chi kicked off playing down the slope and immediately had Brighton on the ropes.

Heavy pressure led to a five metre scrum, from which Chris Johnson offloaded to Martin O’Callaghan to score under the posts for 7-0.

Brighton hit back with a score of their own, but a yellow card for the visitors allowed Chi to extend their lead through Toby Golds.

But Blues went in at the break 15-12 down after conceding ten points in the final 90 seconds of the half.

Into the second period and a further yellow for Brighton allowed Chi to find their stride, Ben Robson scoring twice in two minutes to put them 26-15 up. Brighton hit back but, even after being reduced to 14 late on, Chi stood tall to seal the win. * Bognor RFC will be hoping to return to action for the first time in a month as they host Ventnor tomorrow (3pm).

A mixture of scheduling, rain and snow has meant the Purple and Greens have been fiddling their fingers in the last three weeks.

A return to Hampshire Avenue cannot come soon enough as Bognor sit second in the Hampshire One. With just four games of the season left, the Purple and Greens are 15 points behind United Services.

With the Portsmouth side unbeaten, top spot looks out of Bognor's reach. However, a comfortable victory tomorrow will put them in pole position to seal the runners-up spot.

DARTS: Hayley Gatford, pictured below right, is in seventh heaven after the Hunston Hare won the Benevolent Darts League Ladies knockout for the seventh time.

THe Hunston Hare defeated Rhonda West (Richmond Rebels) in two legs in the final at the Newtown Social Club.

Scoring was close in the opening leg but it was the experienced Gatford who took it, hitting double top.

THe second leg was also close, but an 81 & a ton from the Hare gave her the lead.

West hit back and with, both on a finish, Gatford hit the 20 needed to take the leg, the win, and her seventh Benevolent Ladies knockout champion title.

Taking place on the same night was the over 60s competition.

With the passing of league chairman and four-time champion, Roger Hackett on the Monday before the knockout, the league committee decided it was only right that this knockout was renamed in his honour.

SOFTBALL stars of the future are being invited to come along and try out the sport for free as part of a recruitment drive.

Chichester Falcons Softball Club will kick off their 2018 season with a Rookie Night on March 28.

Looking to repeat the success of last year’s event which brought an entire second squad to the club, the Falcons would like to bolster their numbers enough to form a league team in its own right.

Rookie Night is a free, informal taster session where guys and girls aged 16 and up are invited to try out the game after coaching and mentoring from Falcons club members.

THe players are introduced to hitting, throwing and catching followed by a friendly match. Some of the sessions will be run by members recruited at the same event last year.

THe session gets going at 6pm at Oaklands Park beside the Festival THeatre.

Manager David Morris said: "THe players

who attended Rookie Night last year and joined the Falcons have done incredibly well.

"THey jumped straight into a special tournament aimed at newer players, came away with the Plate trophy, and never looked back.

"THey formed a team for the Viper Series and played game days against Brighton, Guildford and Eastbourne, and a handful of them have already made their way into the Falcons league squad."

Meanwhile, the Falcons’ Oliver Howley has been back on international duty, pitching for the Great Britain under-19 men’s team in the Ayelet International Games in Israel.

Playing in extreme temperatures up to 31C, Oliver won both the Player’s Player Award and Coach’s Player Award during the event.

Alongside Oliver, his fellow Falcons, Bronte Harvey, 17, Amy Morris, ten, and Owen Randell, 16, continue to train monthly at the BSUK Softball Academy in London.

Part of the darts scene in Bognor Regis and the surrounding areas for more than 50 years, Roger, pictured below, became chairman of the Bognor Regis Old Folks Darts League back in the late 1990s to early 2000s. He was responsible for the league being renamed the Benevolent Darts League, then took on the role of

chairman again in 2014.

He passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, after a year long fight with leukaemia. After the funeral, everyone will be meeting at the Newtown Social Club for drinks, food and maybe a few games of darts. Crunch-time for Chi as City face two title rivals in a week

Chi race is big success again THE SECOND leg of the Chichester Corporate Challenge proved as popular as ever as hundreds of runners of all ages raced around the city under the night time lights.

Organised by Chichester Runners and Athletics Club, the event is designed to get people involved in a friendly race on familiar territory.

THousands of people lined the streets to cheer on the runners in the second leg of this popular race, which sees competitors head round a circular track, starting and finishing at the Assembly Rooms in North Street.

THe second leg saw 415 adults cross the finish line in the 4,500 metre race, led home by Chi Casuals runner Henry Leleu in 13 minutes 37 seconds.

He was closely followed by Edward Dodd (Russell Giles Partnership - 13:40) and Matt Gordon (Linn Systems - 13:46).

THe first female home was Rhiannan Dunlop of Portsmouth City who clocked 15:25 for 31st overall. Lucy THraves (16:19) and Charlotte Bowsher (16:25) took second and third place.

In the team event, Conrad's Lads made up of Ned Potter,

Ben Collins, Brodie Keates and Ollie Shergold were first home in a combined 59:46.

Russell Giles Partnership were top of corporates while in the female team competition West Sussex County Council (Amanda Godfrey, Rebecca Brown, Laura Carter) ranked first in a combined 1:07:00.

Before the adults, more than 400 youngsters of both primary and secondary ages took part in various races with Sam Tonks (North Mundham - primary boys), Hattie Bond (Herne - primary girls) Joe McClarnon (Ditcham Park Year 7/8 boys), James Gardhan (Bishop Luffa - Year 9/10 boys) and Holly Wilkinson (Brookfield - secondary girls) coming first.

THe event is now in its 27th year having been started in 1992 as a seniors’ only competition between local firms, sports clubs and other organisations. Juniors were added a few years later.

Both elements have developed over the years to such an extent that more than 800 took part in each of the first two legs. A similar number is expected for the final part of the challenge next Wednesday from 6pm.

CHICHESTER City are gearing up for a crunch week which could go a long way to deciding the SCFL Premier title race.

Competition in the county league has been fierce this season with seven teams in the hunt for the league crown.

With the top two sides also being guaranteed promotion to the Isthmian South for the first time, the stakes have never been higher.

With six weeks of the season left to run, Chi are right in the middle of it, sitting in sixth place, three points off second and seven points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA, albeit with two games in hand on most of their rivals.

Miles Rutherford's side have two crunch matches in the next four days which could well decide their fate. First up is a visit from seventh-place Eastbourne Town tomorrow (3pm), a side who have fallen off the pace in the past month after not winning in four.

THen, on Tuesday night under the lights, Chi travel to Gorings Mead to play league leaders Horsham YMCA (7.30pm). With City losing to bottom side Littlehampton Town when they last played three weeks ago, there will be plenty of incentive to return to winning ways.

PAGHAM'S Sussex Senior Cup dream may be over - but the Lions are still roaring on in their pursuit of SCFL Premier glory.

Under the guidance of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds, the young charges beat higher division opponents on their way to the last four of the county cup.

Buoyed by a 1-0 victory over Lancing at the same ground on Saturday, Pagham went into the match with high hopes.

But the run was brought to an end on Tuesday when the Lions were defeated 6-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s at Culver

Road.

Losing to a side made of professionals, many of whom are youth internationals, has not dented too many hopes at Nyetimber Lane even if officials were secretly dreaming of an end of season run out at THe Amex Stadium in the final. It means full focus switches onto the SCFL Premier run-in. And, even with Pagham sitting seventh, Lions fans know their team still have an outside shot of lifting the league title at the end of April.

they may be five points off second with two matches in the bag. But with each of those sides above them still to play a handful of matches against each other, Pagham could yet ride through the middle to spring a surprise.

Form is certainly on their side, with Tuesday's defeat only their second on 22 matches. Next are two winnable fixtures on the road, with a trip to Eastbourne United tomorrow (3pm) followed by a visit to Crawley Down Gatwick on Tuesday (7.30pm).

In SCFL Division One, Selsey hope to play their first match in close to a month when they travel to Eastbourne Borough's Priory Lane to face second-place Langney Wanderers tomorrow (3pm).

THe Blues have lost four of their past five, a run which has seen them slip to eighth in the league.

But, with games in hand on the sides around them, Steve Bailey's side know that a decent return in the next six weeks could deliver a top-six finish.

THey have performed well against Langney this season, defeating them away in the Sussex Senior Cup first round earlier in the season.

In SCFL Division Two, promotion-chasing Sidlesham face league leaders Alfold at the Rec tomorrow (3pm) knowing that a win is a must if they are to seal a top two finish.

Rejuvenated Bosham welcome Rottingdean Village to Walton Lane (2pm).

Ladies out to down struggling Swindon CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking for six points to seal their spot in the third tier of women's football for another year.

In the past week ,all the talk in the women's game has been around clubs applying for positions in the newly-renamed two top tiers of the English game.

Chi, who are competing at the third tier for the first time this season, were unsurprisingly not among those rumoured to have bid.

But their claim to remain at that level which will be renamed the National League - could be strengthened with six points in the next two weeks.

Chi, who are currently seventh in the FA Women's Premier League South, face struggling Swindon Town on Sunday (2pm)

at Oaklands Park before hosting Charlton Athletic the following week.

THey will be keen for a win after coming away from their trip to in-form West Ham United last weekend empty-handed following a 2-0 defeat.

Amber Stobbs grabbed a brace to seal the points for the Hammers to leave the Green and White army to reflect on their performance.

If there were positives to be taken from the match, they came in the form of a lively debut for Natasha Stephens and also the return of skipper Emma Alexandre who looked comfortable back in the side after an injury sustained in the FA Cup clash at the New Saints in January.

Relegation-bound Rocks seek six points in crunch matches Next Game

EAST THURROCK (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR return to action after three weeks' rest eager to pick up points as their fight for survival kicks off.

With just 11 games of the National South remaining, Jack Pearce's side are second bottom and ten points clear from safety.

Hopes of getting their great escape underway last weekend on the road at fourthbottom Concord Rangers were dashed as the match was postponed because of the poor condition of the pitch.

THat, combined with the snow the previous weekend, means the last time Bognor took to the pitch in earnest was the end of February.

But, providing the weather stays away, the Rocks will make up for that in the next four days - with a crucial home stand featuring matches against mid-table East THurrock and playoff chasing Welling in the next four days.

At this stage of the season both are six pointers - although when the manager spoke to the Post this week - he was happy just to get playing again.

Pearce said: "I think it will be great to get back to action. It is always nice to have a break but it has gone on a bit longer than we wanted.

"It was frustrating to say the least being on a coach for two-and-a-half hours only to get off [at Concord] and the game was called off.

"But we trained hard on Tuesday and we have 11 games to go to get as many points as we can."

THe Rocks' task was made harder as, while they endured a two-and-a-half hour trip back on the coach on Saturday, the sides above them in the fight for survival picked up points.

Hungerford, Chippenham and Eastbourne Borough all won, meaning the gap to safety for the Rocks is now ten points.

With two homes coming at home to East THurrock tomorrow (3pm) and the rearranged Welling match on Tuesday (7.45pm), the pressure is building for positive results.

Pearce, though, sees the good points.

He said: "It shows that every team in the league can beat everyone, the bottom sides regularly pick up points off those at the top which is good for us moving forward."

THe Rocks will be missing Calvin Davies (suspension) as well as long-term absentees Chad Field, James Crane, Corey Heath and Dan Beck through injury.

Stefan Ljubicic, the tall teen striker on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, could start. His return from suspension after being dismissed an hour into his debut against Truro City has been delayed because of the recent postponements.

With snow forecast tomorrow, Pearce said the club would make an early decision on the East THurrock match.

He said: "THe pitch is looking super, even though, if the forecast is correct, there could be more snow. Let's hope they are wrong."

Rocks raring to avenge defeat IT FEELS like a long time since the Rocks last faced East THurrock.

For those Bognor supporters with short memories, the return match at the Essex side near the mouth of the THames came back in August. THose were heady days for the Nye Camp faithful - as the Rocks were unbeaten in five matches on their return to the sixth tier of English football.

A 2-0 reverse at East THurrock was Bognor's first defeat of the season. It also started a poor run of form which Jack Pearce's side have never quite shaken off. How apt would it be then if the same side that triggered the slump could also spark the great escape?

After not playing in three weeks, Bognor's small squad will certainly be raring to go the get back on the pitch.

Pearce said: "We had a great session on Tuesday so we shall see. We have a great coach in Dabba and great support staff around the club.

"THe one thing that hasn't changed all year is the training, which has been superb.

THe lads' attitude is great and the feeling in the changing room is great. THey are the important qualities that any manager looks for."

WELL, there has been no football to talk about over the past two weeks thanks to the weather!

Bognor’s home game against St Albans was postponed by the Friday lunchtime because of the snow and then our away fixture to Concord Rangers was called off at 1.40pm by the referee after an eventual pitch inspection ruled that game off too.

We were almost there on the coach when David Robinson got the call to tell us the game was called off.

What didn’t happen was a promised pitch inspection at 11am. As we got onto the coach, word going around was that they had called the game on at about 9am.

After the news of the postponement, everyone was questioning it and apparently even the players and management of both teams wanted to play.

I think at certain times, common sense needs to prevail and if both teams are willing to play on such a pitch then let them get the game out of the way – especially at this stage of the season.

THe referee was looking at it from a safety perspective of course. But, as it was only a small area of the pitch, perhaps the referee could have advised the groundstaff to do more work on it to make it safer to play on?

So, in the end, it was decision time. Did we want to go and watch Dartford vs Poole Town or Tonbridge Angels vs Worthing?

We saw the Mackerels coach as we stopped at the services, and the Poole Town

coach was there as well – small world.

I voted for the Dartford game but in the end we were closer to the match at East THurrock United v Welling United. So 35 Bognor fans piled in at East THurrock to see Welling United win 1-0.

THe ‘other Rocks’ couldn’t believe their luck as we added to their gate. THere wasn’t much to talk about as most of the Bognor fans were keeping a close eye on other fixtures in the division.

Although, I would say the Wings were the better footballing side. I think the tannoy announcer did a good job recognising the Bognor fans in attendance, while pushing the trip to Nyewood Lane in their next game to take on 'a certain team that play in green and white'.

It turned out the Dartford game was just as poor, with Poole Town somehow getting a 1-0 away win as the third from bottom Dolphins beat the top of the table Darts. In fact most of the results went against us this past Saturday.

Typical.

So, tomorrow we are at home to East THurrock United. Physically, quite good but not the best passing team I have seen.

We lost at their place 2-0 earlier on in the season, but if we keep Sam Higgins out, I think we have a real shot of getting some points.

I hope the game is ON tomorrow as I am starting to get BRTFC withdrawal symptoms.
