Worries over seafront safety FEARS have been raised about safety after the foreshore office in Bognor Regis is demolished.

Arun District Council plans to level the existing building on the promenade as part of its intention to install the new toilets approved by councillors this year.

THe conveniences have been fully funded and are intended to be in place.

But no money has been put aside by councillors for a replacement foreshore

office.

THe base, opposite Walton Avenue, was built more than 20 years ago and was used by the council’s foreshore officers and contained a first aid post and loudspeaker facilities.

Town councillor Jeanette Warr, pictured above outside the shuttered building, said was concerned the loss of the office would put visitors and residents at risk.

A lack of information had been

available from Arun about the future of the service once the new toilets are opened.

“It’s crazy that we will have a foreshore without a foreshore office. We need it.

We are a seaside resort which has a lot of visitors," said Cllr Mrs Warr.

“If it’s warm at Easter, there will be lot of people on the seafront and some could go on the beach.

“THe seafront can be packed out on

a nice day in the summer and we need some supervision of it on the spot.

“If someone goes into the sea, and gets into trouble, the foreshore officers need to react very quickly. Someone has to coordinate any rescue efforts.

“THe RNLI lifeguards have been here in the recent summers but that’s only for a limited period of time. It is vital that we have more coverage than that.

Anger about crime in centre of town TOWN centre traders’ anger about crime in Bognor Regis will be raised with the county’s top police officer today.

Sussex police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne pledged to ensure the complaints featured in her latest monthly meeting with the Chief Constable, Giles York. THe accountability session will be webcast on Mrs Bourne’s website – sussex-pcc.gov.uk – and archived for viewing in the future.

Mrs Bourne was left in no doubt about the lack of confidence businesses had in the police to stop crime blighting the town centre.

Representatives of national companies such as Sports Direct and Wilko were among those who took it in turns at Monday’s annual town electors’ meeting to tackle her about the situation.

She said: “I am going to focus on this and see what I can bring to bear on the chief constable.

“If you can get the information to me on Tuesday by email, that would be really helpful. I will be asking him some of the questions you are asking me. I will be asking him at the meeting what is happening, particularly what is happening with young people.

“I will definitely take this up for you.

THeft and shoplifting does matter. It’s not a victimless crime. You are employing people and, without a strong economy, towns like Bognor Regis will not survive.

“Yes, the police should be arresting if there’s a crime but there are a lot of other services around, particularly with young

people. It needs to be approached from all sides.”

Some 45 people attended the meeting in the town hall’s council chamber. Most came to air their views about the need for better policing in the town centre.

As well as the national retailers, Roger Lewis, the owner of Squires Model & Craft Tools in London Road, spoke of his struggles against sometimes violent shoplifters.

“Like many businesses, my business suffers from quite a large amount of shoplifting, mainly from a very specific few people within the town. Most of them would be well known to many shopworkers in the town,” he said. But he claimed the police did not want to prosecute those responsible.

Unique Promotions owner Paul Wells said one criminal could be brazenly seen selling stolen goods in the London Road precinct last THursday.

“THere are 12 youths causing issues up and down London Road. THere are cases of ongoing anti-social behaviour problems and theft from the shops on a day to day basis,” he said.

Danny Dawes, of Grandad’s Front Room Community Interest Company, said: “People out there are full of unrest.

People are going to start taking matters into their own hands.

“People are threatening to hit kids and threatening to hit offenders. It should not happen but emotions in this town are running so high at the moment.” * See page 4

A DECISION to turn down the chance to buy tributes to First World War soldiers has been defended by Bersted parish councillors.

As reported, they decided not to take part in the Silent Soldier campaign by the Royal British Legion to mark the centenary of the end of the conflict.

THe charity is offering organisations the chance to buy an aluminium Silent Soldier for £250 to put on display for the rest of this year. But Bersted's councillors said they feared the items would not last on display.

Cllr David Lainchbury said the original decision had initially caused a

fierce reaction on social media. But the next day saw many others come to the council's defence.

"THey were asking where would we put them because they will probably get nicked for the metal alone and also get vandalised," he said. "We would have to put them somewhere visible. Otherwise, what is the point of having them?

"Only Bognor Regis and Aldwick council have so far agreed to buy Silent Soldiers. We will see how this pans out."

Cllr Hugh Carey said: "I think we made the right decision. What is the point of buying something that is going to get stolen or vandalised?"

Philippa is Bersted's resident of the year SURPRISED Philippa Seagar has been honoured as Bersted's latest resident of the year.

Mrs Seagar was awarded the title of the parish's most community-minded resident for the past year.

She was presented with her shield and an engraved paperweight by Bersted Parish Council's finance and general purposes committee chairman, Cllr David Lainchbury, at the council's annual reception. He said her work to improve the area made her a worthy winner.

Chichester Road resident Mrs Seagar, 66, said she was stunned to receive the accolade.

It was awarded for her steadfast efforts in launching and running the annual Bersted in Bloom competition, as well as her support for many charity events.

"Bersted in Bloom has been going for six years now and, hopefully, it will be bigger and better this year," she said.

"I have some help now from members of Bognor Regis Horticultural Society, which is good, because it's quite a lot of work to keep the competition going.

"THere is a lot of effort needed in the background. We have a lot of gardens in Bersted and a lot of good gardeners - and it's a case of getting out there and getting the competition known to them."

As well as running Bersted in Bloom, Mrs Seagar also raises money for charity.

Much of this work is for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust and its services for seriously ill children and their families.

THe presentation at last THursday's event followed the award of the parish council's annual grants.

A total of £1,500 was presented by Cllr Lainchbury to eight organisations. THey were: TS Montrose Nautical Training Corps (£100), Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day (£200), Bartons Primary School (£300), Bognor Rugby Football Club (£200), 4Sight Vision Support (£200), Bognor Regis & District Sea Scouts (£200), West Sussex Mediation Service (£100) and Making THeatre Gaining Skills Community Interest Company (£200).

THe parish council had been 'beseiged' by the biggest demand for the grants yet,

Cllr Lainchbury said.

"I find that interesting in the light of today's economy with various income streams being shut off by central and local governments. It seems organisations are

searching around more and more for new incomes," he added.

"THis is something the chairman and I will consider when we start to look at the budget for 2019/20 at the end of this year."

ACTION should be taken to make a short cut for pedestrians and cyclists safer, a Bersted councillor has said.

Cllr David Meagher said the unofficial paths across the grass bank of some 4ft alongside the A29 Shripney Road were unsafe.

“THe road there is at two levels and the path between them is quite steep and slippery,” he said.

“It is quite dangerous and it just needs to be formalised. People struggle to get up there.

"THere is also a large block of concrete which juts out on to the path to make it even more dangerous.”

THe banking divides the residential section of Shripney Road, which leads to Ivy Crescent, and the dualcarriageway outside Tesco.

A pelican crossing is situated on the dual-carriageway and the worn away earth directly connects that to the lower part of Shripney Road.

THere is a hard surface footway and cyclepath alongside the dualcarriageway.

Cllr Meagher told Bersted Parish Council’s meeting last week the dualcarriageway in that area was also in a poor condition.

“THat road needs re-surfacing. THe surface is just breaking up. I can’t believe it’s been allowed to get so bad

for so long. It looks like something out of a THird World country.”

County councillor Francis Oppler said he would take up the matter with the county council’s highways officers.

“I’ve noticed the surface has been breaking down because I go up and down that road many times a day.

Something needs to be done in terms of the surface and I will pursue it.”

Cllr Hugh Carey also raised the condition of the surface between Central Avenue's junctions with Chichester Road and South Way. Cllr Martin Lury, a cyclist, said the situation was especially dangerous for those who travelled around on two wheels.

"Some of these potholes when they are deep can be dangerous. When I am cycling and see one, I sometimes have to pull out around it rather than go over it.

"I have to look round to check that drivers are not coming too close to me.

"THe bigger potholes are seriously hazardous to cyclists," he said.

"I don't believe the roads currently are fit for purpose. THere is a lot of effort being put in for people not to use their cars but the roads are too dangerous for cyclists in some cases."

` Housing protests FRESH protests have greeted plans to increase the number of proposed homes at a Pagham development.

Taylor Wimpey wants to gain planning permission for another 20 dwellings at its site north of Sefter Road. Its latest application for up to 280 properties follows its original proposal to Arun District Council in late 2016.

THe developer says the change will enable it to provide an alternative use for land initially put aside for a primary school.

THe school could instead be built on one of the other two large sites in Pagham earmarked for housing.

But dozens of residents have already objected to Arun about the current proposal. Benjamin River, of Golden Acre, Pagham, is among them. He told the council: "Clearly, no-one in Pagham is for this type of development and it is ridiculous that even more housing is being considered.

"Residents of Pagham will not be defeated on this."

Blondell Drive resident Chris Dowling told the district council: "What a disgrace - increasing the housing when the original plan is going to put a huge burden already on local roads and other facilities.

"I strongly object to this new proposal."

A replacement Scout hut and land for an ambulance community response post are still contained in the latest application.

A care home could be built on the school site if West Sussex County Council decides the school should be opened elsewhere.

Police pledge about crime TEENAGERS behind anti-social behaviour in Bognor Regis are being targeted, a senior police officer has pledged.

THe action includes continued work by the Arun prevention team of Sussex Police with partner agencies to take action against those that are responsible for the matters that have angered business owners and residents.

In particular, Sussex Police officers and staff will work closely with their British Transport Police counterparts and Arun District Council to target known trouble-spots and troublemakers and act on the information they receive about them.

Prevent Inspector Tony McCarthy said: "We are well aware of recent problems in the Bognor and Littlehampton town centres, along with issues in Rustington and East Preston.

"I am mindful of the concerns raised by the communities in these areas with regards to the ongoing anti-social behaviour. THere has been concern raised by our community and this has stemmed from a known group of youths aged between 12 and 15.

"We will confront and challenge the actions of individuals within the group and prevent their unacceptable behaviour from continuing."

As reported on page 2, a range of business representatives in Bognor Regis town centre and residents confronted Sussex police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne on Monday

with examples of crimes and anti-social behaviour which they said deserved better attention from the police.

Speaking after the meeting, Insp McCarthy said Sussex Police was putting in a lot of effort to improve the situation.

"I want to reassure people that there has been a significant investment of police time in addressing this, not only in terms of enforcement activity, but also in liaison with other agencies who can help tackle some of the root causes of the problems that have been reported," he said.

"My message to those who persist in causing an anti-social nuisance in our public areas is clear - you will be identified and targeted robustly to prevent your unacceptable behaviour from continuing.

"Anyone affected by anti-social behaviour in this area is encouraged to report incidents to us without delay.

"We would also be glad to receive any information about those thought to be responsible for offences and anything else that may help us to effectively deal with local concerns."

Knitters have a natter with town MP when he visits their session FUNDRAISING knitting fans had the chance to meet Bognor Regis MP Nick Gibb at one of their recent sessions.

THe women meet twice a week to create baby hats, cardigans, blankets and jumpers which raise money for charity.

One of their specialities is twiddle muffs, which are used as therapy for people with dementia.

THese are tactile knitted objects which contain a variety of buttons and other sewn-on items that the user can touch and play with.

Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "I was

delighted to meet this group of ladies with their passion for knitting - using their talent and skill to raise money for good causes as well as the chance for good conversation."

THe group started a now closed craft shop in Bognor Regis town centre five years ago.

THey have since switched their meeting places to the town library in London Road on Wednesdays and on Fridays at the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street.

Town's seafront should still be Victorian, council is told

POPULAR Victorian designs should still be a feature on Bognor Regis, one of the town's councillors has stated.

Cllr Francis Oppler said the policy for the appearance of the buildings along the Promenade was a popular one.

He questioned Arun District Council's proposed seafront delivery plan and its potential move away the 19th century look. He told the council's overview select committee on Tuesday: "I can't ever remember a council decision saying the Victorian theme in Bognor Regis was dead.

"It has been ignored, sadly, and a number of people in the town still have the view that is what should be progressed. If there has been a decision why has there been one?"

"As part of this process, the council has also instructed architects to produce a style guide for business units.

"THe purpose of the style guide is to provide a clear guidance document that sets out what business units could look like," he said.

"Working in this way should assist in the adoption of effective design principles so that we can deliver quality built units that improve the seafront realm in the town."

THe council would pay for the first business unit to be built, once the style guide was agreed, to encourage a business to move in. It was hoped this would pave the way for other operators to build further units.

Arun was seeking to move away from short-term leases to enable their tenants to be able to invest more to improve their businesses. Rents also took into account the seasonal nature of some of the operators, he said.

But he warned the future of deckchairs on Bognor Regis beach was uncertain beyond this summer. THe service by an established seafront business, and that in Littlehampton, was being delivered at a cost to council taxpayers.

"It is so seasonal and last year was a bad summer. THe market changed and families come to the seaside with chairs they've bought for £4.99," he added.

"We review the situation year on year. We will run it again this year but it is getting to the point where it's becoming an issue."

Event recruits helpers POTENTIAL volunteer Amanda Dixon was among those who attended a Bognor Regis event to discover more about helping out.

Amanda is aware of the benefits volunteering can bring but is new to the town and its organisations.

She went along to the information stand from the Volunteer Now section of the Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester (VAAC) charity.

She has moved to the coast from Horsham because of family circumstances and wants to assist others while she attempts to find work.

She said: "I have volunteered before and I know what the benefits are. It's about meeting new people and learning a lot more about different situations. Whether you're helping to educate children or helping people going through problems, it's important to give back."

THe previous volunteering by Amanda, 52, who lives in the town, took place around Horsham.

It included helping the Salvation Army feed homeless people and assisting youth groups.

She has already been in contact with My Sisters'

House women's advice centre in Bognor Regis and intends to help out at its premises in Clock Walk in the High Street and London Road.

VAAC funding advisor Nina Ghibaldan said Amanda was one of two likely volunteers who had gone along in the first hour of last Wednesday's session in Bognor Regis Library.

"We want to go out to people and show them the volunteering opportunities that we are aware of from local community groups and charities.

"We can tell members of the people about them and, hopefully, marry them and their skills with the opportunities.

"THere are so many members of the voluntary sector in this area who do an amazing job and people are not always aware of the opportunities they have and what they can get out of volunteering."

VAAC has staged several of the sessions as part of the county library network's Wellbeing Month.

"It's about going to where people are rather than expecting them to come to us," added Nina.

Last year saw the foreshore office staffed from 10am-6pm daily between April 6 – the week before Easter – until September 12.

It has stood empty and shuttered since then. THis is in keeping with the situation in previous years.

As well as her safety fears, Cllr Mrs Warr (LD, Hotham) said she would have liked to have seen the existing building kept.

“THe building matches three other units nearby along the seafront and it suits the area well because it was designed to reflect the pier.

“It’s a sturdy building and I am sure it could be put to another use.

“Arun don’t want to tell us what is happening on our seafront. It’s a great shame because we should know what is going on there," she said.

But an Arun spokeswoman said yesterday afternoon that Cllr Mrs Warr's fears were unfounded.

Plans were well advanced to maintain the standard of the foreshore service in Bognor Regis.

"Public safety is the council's number one priority, and this includes visitors and residents on Bognor Regis seafront.

"Arun District Council can, therefore, confirm that, throughout the summer season, the foreshore service will have a base on the seafront and a visible presence for the public to access.

"THe high level of service, safety and reassurance provided will not be compromised," she said.

Hotel wins bid for late music OBJECTIONS from residents failed to stop a Felpham hotel being given permission to play live music until midnight weekly.

Six sets of protests were received concerning the application by businessman Peter de Savary to enable the entertainment to take place at his Beachcroft Hotel.

But Arun District Council’s licensing sub-committee agreed bands and singers can entertain guests beyond the permitted limit of 11pm. However, the extended time will only be allowed if the hotel produces an acceptable noise management plan within 28 days of last Monday.

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Andy Cooper said: “THe plan has to be agreed between the applicant, the council’s environmental health officers and licensing manager. THe plan will be revised as necessary to ensure that sufficient compliance is achieved at all times.”

Mr de Savary has been running the 35-bedroom hotel with a July, 2015, premises licence for the sale of alcohol.

But an oversight when the 2003 Licensing Act became law meant the hotel had failed to apply for an entertainments licence.

THis meant it was legally only allowed to to play music until 11pm nightly. THe situation was only discovered recently.

Mr de Savary sought to correct this by being able to play live music until midnight Fridays and Saturdays, 11.30pm on Sundays and 1am on New Year’s Eve. He also wants to play recorded music until midnight daily and 1am on January 31.

One of the objectors, Mark Bellamy, of Clyde Road, had previously presented the council with a list of complaints made

about noise from the hotel.

He said: “It’s about sleep disruption for the residents of Clyde Road and its surroundings, Canning Road and Outram Road. It can’t be acceptable that our sleep patterns are disrupted by the level of noise at the Beachcroft Hotel's functions.

“It’s a quiet location for residential housing. It’s not a town or city centre. THe thump, thump, thump of the bass note is particularly noticeable. THat travels along the ground to surrounding houses."

As well as the disturbance from the music, the hotel’s neighbours also had to endure noise from smokers outside the premises until 2am and drivers getting out of its gravelled car park.

For Mr de Savary, barrister David Campbell said: “Please accept our apology for any inconvenience or nuisance which may have been caused from time to time.

It is not our intention to do so.

“It is lawful for the activities to be conducted up to 11pm in any event. THe application is only to extend the hours until midnight. THis is a hotel, not a public house or nightclub. Dancing and entertainment are an intrinsic part of any business plan for such a hotel.

“For them to survive, the Christmas period and the ‘wedding season’ are a fundamental part of the hotel’s ability to make profits and continue to trade.”

THe hotel would provide a contact phone number and name for residents with complaints during late-night events as part of the noise management plan, he added. Mr de Savary has spent £750,000plus on the hotel since he bought it two years ago. It provides 30 full-time jobs.

TEA FOR nearly 100 people marked Felpham Community College's work to help rid the world of polio.

Sandwiches, cakes and cuppas were served to members of the community and students who had worked towards the Purple4Polio campaign at the college to raise awareness of the fight against the serious condition.

THey planted 1,400 purple crocus bulbs in its grounds off Felpham Way as a symbol of Bognor Regis Rotary Club's contribution to the work of its global parent organisation to eradicate polio.

THe tea party was the second to be held by the college and bigger than last year's initial event. THose who attended last THursday listened as students Charlie Cogger, pictured far left, and Issy Saunders, pictured right, outlined the importance of ensuring the world soon became polio-free.

Issy, 16, said: "THere are only three countries in the world where polio still

exists. It important we get rid of it.

"It reduces children's chances of getting an education and it affects their limbs and nervous system."

Charlie, also 16, said: "I feel proud having planted some of the bulbs. But I don't think people understand why the crocuses are here.

"THat is why we are trying to raise awareness so more and more people know about what we are doing."

Rotarians had also visited the college to talk about how the money they raised bought vaccines to be used to immunise children against polio.

Michelle Kelly, an assistant headteacher, said: "We want to help to spread the message that we can work together to help to eradicate polio."

THe student council, helped by member of staff Gill Robins, had staged the tea party. Mary Pavard, from the Rotary Club, had also helped Year 7 students bake the cakes, she added.

Electors back plea to have a say in regeneration schemes RESIDENTS must have a say in regeneration plans for Bognor Regis, the town's electors' meeting agreed.

A poll of 14 votes for and none against backed a motion by Longford Road resident and town councillor Jan Cosgrove which called for the views of those who live in the urban Bognor Regis area to be taken into account when the final schemes were decided.

A show of hands of all those present at Monday's meeting showed backing of 28-0 for his motion.

Mr Cosgrove said Bognor Regis had five acres of public open space compared to Littlehampton's 26 acres.

` Micro-pub backed DRINKERS will be able to raise their glasses in the first micro-pub in Bognor Regis.

Darren Judd has been given planning permission to change the use of a shop to the drinking establishment.

Arun District Council planning officer Richard Temple said the business was suitable for the site at Blake House in the High Street in THe Steyne conservation area.

He says in his report only a few homes were in the area.

"It is not considered the use of the unit as a pub will cause significant noise and disturbance as the hours of operation from 11am to 10pm on all days of the year is considered to be acceptable," he adds.

Ten letters of support for Mr Judd's plans were received by Arun. No objections were received.

` Digital hub cash A ÂŁ100,000 boost has been given to the creative digital hub planned for Bognor Regis railway statiom.

THe funding has come from the Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Platform's growth fund.

THe project is a joint initiative between Arun and West Sussex councils and Hemingway Design.

Arun leader Cllr Gillian Brown said: "THe hub could support up to 150 businesses. We are going out to procurement at the moment. THis is a big step forward for Bognor Regis."

THe hub is set to open this summer in two former waiting rooms.

THe aim is for creative and digital entrepreneurs to use it as their base.

Special award for Danny from police A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Bognor Regis boy has received a special award from the police.

Danny Herbert, who has a rare heart condition, was presented with his unique accolade at the annual awards of a key department in Sussex Police.

THe force contact, command and control departmental awards recognised the courage and professionalism of the staff and officers who respond to public calls for police help.

Danny became a police officer for a day last November and spent time in the contact centre.

Among the others who received awards were contact handlers who pick up 999 calls, controllers who despatch officers to

the scenes of crime and the switchboard team who are the first to respond to 101 calls and messages.

Chief Superintendent Jane Derrick, who oversees the department, said: "I am incredibly proud of the work of each and every person who works in the force contact, command and control department and this awards ceremony is about recognising those who have gone above and beyond.

"Working in this environment can be relentless, stressful and a lot of hard work but these people are truly committed to helping the public.

"We can't teach compassion, empathy, commitment and dedication but all these people have that in abundance."

Concert band promises fun MUSICIANS in the Southdowns Concert Band are celebrating its 30th anniversary with its first concert of this special year in Bognor Regis.

THey have designed their spring spectacular appearance to be a funpacked concert with a light-hearted theme to keep the audience at the Regis Centre entertained.

Brenda Bailey, the band's concert secretary, said: "THe programme will appeal to everyone and will include Candide by Bernstein, My Fair Lady by Frederick Lowe and Finlandia by Sibelius."

Also featuring will be Rogers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma Selection and Mr Blue Sky by the ELO.

THe concert will take place at 3pm this Sunday in the centre's Alexandra THeatre.

Trevor's holiday turns into journey of discovery about wartime relative A SERIES of extraordinary events has led a North Bersted man to uncover the story of a relative on the other side of the world.

THe bizarre coincidences have brought the story of one of the great uncles of Trevor Woodland to life.

He has discovered Frederick William Woodland was among the victims of Australia’s first submarine tragedy.

Trevor said: “I am staggered by what has happened. When I found out all the information, I couldn’t sleep for a few nights because it kept going through my mind. I would never have guessed that one of my relatives died in the First World War thousands of miles away.”

THe unknown links began to appear for Trevor last summer. He had commissioned a detailed family tree to find out more about his predecessors.

THe result was a chart, pictured right, at least 12ft long and containing details of hundreds of ancestors back to 1730.

Among the more recent relatives was one which stood out – Frederick William – because his place of death was listed as Rabaul, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, on September 14, 1914.

He had been born in Aldwick and was six days short of his 31st birthday when he died.

Trevor, 80, of Bedford Avenue, was curious because the location was so different from all the others in the Bognor Regis area.

But he thought no more about it. He left for his latest tour of Australia for THe

Ashes cricket matches with England at the end of last year.

During that tour, he travelled to Adelaide just before Christmas during a break between the games.

He booked into his hotel and went back to its reception when he was having problems with his iPad. THe receptionist happened to be reading a copy of that day’s THe Advertiser newspaper.

It was open on page 7 on which the lead article concerned the discovery of Australian submariners on AE1 who had been lost under the sea for more than 100 years.

Trevor glanced at it and noticed Papua New Guinea was given as the location of the mystery sinking. He also saw British sailors were among those lost.

It struck him as interesting and the receptionist allowed him to keep the copy. Trevor stuck it into a side pocket of his case.

Six weeks later, and Trevor had returned home via THailand and Cambodia, and began to read the article fully.

He linked the date of the sinking of AE1 on September 14, 1914, with the date of Frederick’s death.

“I knew a lot of my family had been in the Royal Navy. My grandfather was a sailor all his life and his father had been one as well,” he said.

Some research on the internet soon uncovered the fact Frederick was among the 35 deceased when the first submarine in the Australian Navy sank.

Trevor has been finding out further facts in the past month as he contacts people in Australia with his story.

He said: “What has happened is spooky. I’ve been spooked out by it. I was obviously meant to read the article.

“I had no real reason go to Adelaide, there weren’t any cricket matches there, and to go down to the reception at the time that page of the paper was open for me to read was unbelievable.

“It was the only paper I looked at in nine weeks. I could never have even imagined any of this a year ago.

“I even looked at all the memorials I saw when I was in Australia and there were no Woodlands on them.

“I was also in Darling Harbour on New Year’s Eve and I saw a memorial in the water to the victims on AE1 and didn’t realise what it was along with medals and photographs in the museum there.”

Even more eerily, Frederick’s address was given as his mother’s at 8 Council Cottages, Sheepwash Lane (now Hawthorn Road) – a short distance from Trevor’s Second World War home on the corner of Essex Road and Town Cross Avenue.

His name is recorded on the town’s First World War memorial in its hospital.

Frederick Woodland had joined the Royal Navy in 1900 for 12 years. He volunteered to serve in the Royal Australian Navy soon afterwards. AE1 set sail for Australia in early 1914.

` Charity's delight PEBBLE painting for a Chichester charity is becoming increasingly popular.

More than 3,000 people have signed up to the Facebook page of CancerWise in support of the fun initiative in just two weeks.

Sam ends her marathon wait SAM SCOTT has dusted down her 19-yearold trainers to help stop other parents seeing their children battle meningitis.

THe Bognor Regis mum-of-six bought the shoes in the last century and has finally put them on to train for her forthcoming London Marathon debut.

She will be joining tens of thousands of other entrants on the 26.2-mile course around the capital next month to raise funds for Meningitis Now. Sam, 49, remembers vividly watching her third oldest child, Hayley Scott, being treated in a London hospital for the potentially fatal illness.

She said: “I have always wanted to take part in the London Marathon since Hayley got ill and I have always wanted to do it before I was 50.

"I should have done the marathon years ago but now seems as good a time as any to enter. I can’t believe I’m doing it, though.”

Sam’s thoughts first turned towards the world famous race when she completed a 10k race in London in 1999. She bought the trainers in a dedicated athletic shop to ensure the perfect fit.

But three children and a busy domestic life in general stopped her achieving her ambition. She still kept the £80 trainers, though, in the hope they would one day take her across the finishing line.

“THey have been sitting in their box all this time,” said the Hawthorn Road resident, “until I started training a few months ago.

“I was going to sell them when we moved from Croydon eight years ago but I thought they might come in handy and kept them."

THey are in perfect condition ready for Sam to line up at the start in the capital on April 22.

A part-time carer, she began walking

last September to build up her fitness and started jogging last November.

A bad cold before Christmas set her back but she started to train more seriously three times a week from the start of this year.

"I’m expecting to walk and run around the course,” she said. “It will be good to take part.”

She has to raise £2,000 for Meningitis Now and chose the charity because of Hayley’s fight against the condition.

“It was just before Hayley’s third birthday,” she said. “We were living in Croydon at the time and Hayley became ill.

"THe doctors at first said it was chicken pox but I knew the symptoms she had, like bloodshot eyes, were much worse than that.”

Hayley was taken to Guy’s Hospital in London and was diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia.

“THey used a new procedure on her and gave her a blood transfusion,” Sam said, “so she had new blood pumping through here.

“She was in hospital for about a week.

As a parent, you just have to go with the situation and take it day by day.

“I wish I had a photo of her in hospital when she was being treated but, looking back, in those days the cameras didn’t have phones.

“Hayley was OK. She was lucky but other kids are not so lucky. THat’s why I’m supporting Meningitis Now but I was surprised to get into the marathon.”

THe treatment was a complete success and Hayley, 24, is a nursery nurse in Croydon. She will be with the rest of her family supporting her mum around the marathon course.

She said: “Mum will be all right. I don’t remember anything about the meningitis – only what my mum and dad have told me."

Musical sees students help town theatre PERFORMING students have got into the fundraising habit with thousands of pounds for the theatre in Bognor Regis.

THe eight performers from the University of Chichester took to the stage at the Alexandra THeatre in the Regis Centre to help to buy new speakers for the auditorium.

THey put on a production of Nunsense the Megamusical for three days last month and succeeded in raising £4,070.21 towards the £20,000 target.

Donna Day Lafferty, leader of the university's charity and arts development degree programme, said those involved with the show wanted to express their enormous thanks to friends, family and residents who made up the audiences at the show and gave so generously to the collection.

She said: "We're always blown away by the warmth of local audiences and their passion for the Regis Centre.

"It's a really important place for our students and for local people. So it's a geniune honour to be able to support the Regis Centre in this way."

THe show is a musical comedy about the five of the 19 surviving Little Sisters of Hoboken former missionary order who discover their cook accidentally killed the other 52 residents of the convent.

THe university's students often stage shows at the seafront theatre in a link with its operator, the Arun Arts charity.

As well as buying the speakers, the Nunsense team also want to support the running costs of the groups benefiting from the subsidised use of the centre and improve the volunteer programme.

THe students on the charity and arts development programme also helped Arun Arts to promote its scheme to sponsor a seat.

THey designed leaflets that promoted the initiative for theatre lovers to be part of something special in their town.

A good number of the seats have been snapped up by delighted sponsors.

` Fire service plan

DEPRIVED areas of the Arun district have a higher fire risk than elsewhere in West Sussex, fire chiefs have told councillors.

THe draft version of the 20182022 integrated risk management plan presented to West Sussex county councillors on Tuesday says parts of the district had a lower life expectancy, higher health and disability deprivation and overall higher multiple deprivation than most other places in the county.

THe plan, jointly written by Gavin Watts, the operations director and chief fire officer, states: "Deprivation is clearly linked to higher risk of fires.

"Being a single parent, never in paid work, single adult and being deprived were the top factors associated with higher rates of fire in the home.

"West Sussex now has four small areas falling in the ten per cent in England - all within Arun district."

THe level of poverty - and matters such as the rate of alcohol abuse and smoking - are seen in the plan as community challenges.

THe final plan will drive the delivery of the county fire and rescue service and will enable councillors and the general public to hold it to account.

Talk helps Isabelle to build a future career BUDDING architect Isabelle Isitt was inspired by a careers talk by a former Felpham Community College pupil.

Year 7 student Isabelle attended the presentation by Dean Lancaster, a quantity surveyor with Galliford Try, about professional careers in the construction industry.

She said: "It was really interesting.

Galliford Try are building the new University of Chichester engineering and digital technology park just down the road near the school.

"So, it is a local project which I can see daily taking place. I want to be an architect when I leave school, so this was ideal for me."

THe presentation was among a host of activities the college staged in support of national careers week.

A programme of talks and workshops took place during the week. Students from all year groups were encouraged to attend.

As well as Galliford Try, speakers from a variety of businesses attended.

THey included publishing, journalism, housing, architecture and food retailing.

Most were former students.

A number of marine workshops were also held for selected students across Years 7 to 9.

Gill Woodman, the college's careers co-ordinator, said: "Students had to take the initiative this week with the talks and sign up themselves to what interested them.

"It was good to see such a cross-section of careers being discussed. We want to give students as much information and advice on life post-school as possible.

"We organise a number of trips for groups of students in different years throughout the school year from trips to universities, colleges, local businesses and multinational companies as well as a large number of career workshops run in school led by external companies and organisations.

"If there is an event or opportunity taking place which can encourage our students and give them career direction, we will always try and ensure the college is taking part."

As part of their course work, health and social care students from the college have been busy working with the community.

Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 have spent the past two months visiting various places to enable them to interact face-to-face with other people, develop their communication skills and show them how to build positive relationships.

THe Year 10s went to Downview Primary School in Felpham, the Year 11s visited Fordwater School in Chichester and the Year 12s spent time at St Anthony's School in Chichester and Holymead Care Home in Felpham.

THey supported younger children with their work and led activities with them and helped care home residents with

their daily activities and events.

Rachel Greenland, a teacher of health and social care at the college, said: "It is always really useful to get out of the classroom and for our students to interact with people other than their peer group.

"To see them putting what they are learning in the classroom into practice was great.

"THey thrived working with the younger students and supporting their individual needs.

"THeir portfolio of coursework will now contain some real experiences and it was great to hear how all the different age groups throughly enjoyed their trips."

Year 10 students Ellie Smith-Hardy and Abbie Miles went to Downview Primary School and worked with reception classes.

Ellie said: "We devised a piratethemed activity getting the students to look at floating bottles and what makes them float.

"THe children all seemed to enjoy the activity and were very enthusiastic."

Abbie added: "To do the project, we had to use what we have been learning about in class regarding safeguarding, anti-discriminatory practice and communication skills.

"We both went to Downview Primary School as students. So, it was good to go back. Lots of the teachers still recognised us."

Students' film wins award STUDENT film-makers at the University of Chichester have won an international award.

THeir horror-thriller Red River was chosen as best short film at the Eclipse International Film Festival.

THe judges chose the short, which is 11 minutes long, for its bold plotline of a concentration camp escapee's pursuit of a former Nazi soldier.

Writer and producer Tim Wickens, from the BA (Hons) in digital film production and screenwriting degree at the university, said the accolade was a reward for the dedication of the student team.

"We were surprised to win as we had a relatively small budget but it is gratifying to know that you can achieve anything with hard work," he said.

"THe film poses questions about choice and morality and the decisions of a survivor who mercilessly pursues the Nazi soldier who stole the last remaining photo of her daughter."

THe production also received a nomination at the festival in Pasadena in California for best actress.

It was a collaborative effort between as many as 35 students from the first, second and third years of the university's department of creative and digital technologies.

THe undergraduates funded it with nearly £8,000 raised through part-time summer jobs and contributions from online fundraising.

First assistant director Abigail Godfrey was one of

the students who worked with lecturers and industry professionals to plan the project from conception to production.

She said: "To have been nominated at the festival was flattering but to have picked up the award was enormously rewarding and makes all those days in the mud worthwhile."

From this September, as reported, new students in the department of creative and digital technologies will learn in the university's £35m facilities.

Based on the Bognor Regis campus, these will include a 300sq m TV production studio with special effects room and media operation centre.

Red River director Harry Jones said the existing facilities helped students put the finishing touches to the film.

"When we came together to make Red River, we wanted to make something far greater in scope and quality than had been seen in any other dissertation films made prior to us."

` Quizzical time QUIZ fans have a last chance this month to test their knowledge to support St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester.

THe final event of a month of the brain-testing exercises takes place next Wednesday at THe QEII in THe Steyne in Bognor Regis.

THis will follow a series of successful quizzes this month in the area's pubs.

Jerry Doyle, hospice head of fundraising and communications, said: "We want to say a massive thank-you to every local pub and the pub-goers who have got quizzing.

SUSSEX POLICE have urged the public to help them tackle terrorism and save lives by reporting suspicious behaviour.

THey have said no message will be ignored and all the information, treated in strict confidence, will be assessed by experienced officers to find out if any action needs to be taken.

A sight for sore eyes with tests ALMOST half the number of people who visited the Vision Express 'vision van' in Chichester last Wednesday admitted they had not had an eyesight test in over two years.

Vision Express launched its brandnew van amid new research showing the number of glaucoma cases in the UK is likely to top 1.28 million by 2050, which is an increase of 85 per cent.

Aside from the 40 per cent who had not had tests, 82 per cent were issued with new prescriptions and 23 per cent admitted they had not had an eye test in more than 10 years.

MINISTER for school standards Nick Gibb has met apprentices at the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' factory in Goodwood.

Mr Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, talked to the luxury car makers' apprentices from leather, wood, paint, engineering and assembly roles to hear from them the knowledge and skills they have gained since they joined the scheme.

THe apprentices were joined by colleagues who have successfully completed the apprenticeship

programme and are progressing towards management roles in the company.

Mr Gibb learned how Rolls-Royce apprentices combine nationallyrecognised college courses with onthe-job training, working alongside the leading craftspeople and professionals who design and build the world's best selling super-luxury cars.

He said: "It was a pleasure to meet the Rolls-Royce apprentices.

"THeir commitment and developing expertise was very clear from the

St Ives comes to Chichester Max Wildman is a artist whose popular success revolves around an uncanny ability to create works in the style of Alfred Wallis - that most enigmatic of naive painters who lived and worked in St Ives in the first half of the 1900s. He will be exhibiting over 50 of his most recent works at the Oxmarket Gallery in Chichester, from 27th March to the 8th April.

Alfred Wallis is a legendary figure in St Ives artistic life - a fisherman and scrap dealer who took up painting in his seventies. Wallis is said to have amazed sophisticated modernists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood one day during a visit to St Ives. THey were walking near Porthmeor Beach when the pair happened upon Wallis working in his cottage, and were both immediately impressed by his untrained, uninhibited approach.

Wallis worked with whatever materials he could lay his hands on - mostly ordinary household or ships paint, as well as pencil and crayon. He used scraps of cardboard salvaged from the local grocer, which he cut into irregular shapes. Perspective was unimportant to this intuitive painter, who

made objects bigger or smaller depending on the importance he place upon them! His paintings were mainly seascapes or boats which he painted from memory - recalling the years he spend at sea.

Wallis's work eventually became much sought after, making tens of thousands per piece, but he himself died in the poorhouse before being able to reap any reward. Many of his paintings can now be see at Kettles Yard in Cambridge, which is where Max Wildman first encountered them. Having being fascinated by primitive and naive art for some time, he began experimenting using the same materials and techniques that Wallis would have used, and drawing on the same subjects - produces convincing, authentic looking works which are presented in a variety of vintage frames.

For more than a decade now, Wildman has been immersed in perfecting that elusive "Wallis look", and sells his work in many galleries across the country. His aim is to produce Wallis style paintings that look as realistic as possible - but at a tiny fraction of the price of an original. As fellow artist and sculptor John Maltby puts it - "Max Wildman is an artist who certainly knows his Wallis. His paintings are deceptively simple, and at their best they are often aphorisms of this unique St Ives artrist. Once again, Wallis is affordable!"

Easter exhibition at Tangmere Museum THE United States entered the First World War in April, 1917, and an agreement was signed between the British and American governments for the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force (ASAEF) to contribute 30 night bombardment squadrons to the Allied effort.

THese 30 squadrons were to be equipped with an initial order of 310 Handley Page 0/400 twin-engined bombers to be built under licence in the United States and then shipped to Britain for assembly and fitting out.

aerodromes in Sussex commenced during 1917 at Tangmere, Ford Junction, Rustington, Southbourne and Goring-onSea. By the spring of 1918, the work at Tangmere on constructing the ‘Training Depot’ was almost complete; three ‘aeroplane sheds’ and a Handley Page shed to house four of the large bombers had been constructed and the landing ground was ready for use.

However, it was not the Americans who were first to use to use the new aerodrome.

In March, 1918, three newly formed Royal Flying Corps squadrons (Nos 91, 92 and 93) arrived to work-up prior to moving to France and on April 1 these squadrons became part of the newly-formed Royal Air Force.

THe first fatalities at Tangmere occurred six days later on April 7 when three members of 92 Squadron, one of whom was American, were killed in a mid-air collision over the aerodrome when a Sopwith Pup and an Avro 504 collided.

In July, the three RAF squadrons left, the SE 5a scout equipped No 92 for France and the other two squadrons to be disbanded. THe aerodrome then prepared itself for new arrivals.

Between August and November, American aviators arrived at Tangmere and commenced their flying training on a variety of aircraft including British-built HP 0/400 bombers. To provide recreation for the new visitors, an American club was set up in one of the large houses in North Pallant, Chichester.

However, by the Armistice on November 11, none of the American built bombers had arrived and by the end of the year all the Americans had left for home.

THe story of the newly-opened Tangmere aerodrome in 1918 and the formation of the RAF is told in a temporary exhibition to be held at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum from March 30 until April 15.

In addition to explanation boards, models and a film showing the RAF aircraft types based at this famous airfield between 1918 and 1970, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to sit in an accurate replica of an SE 5a First World War cockpit and to ‘fly’ this aircraft on one of the simulators.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the normal museum entrance fee.

Get a spring in your step with the benefits of fennel I KNOW it's been snowing, and it hardly feels like spring, but the daffodils are looking beautiful and the evenings are getting lighter.

As things warm up (fingers crossed) our diets tend to change as we get bored of the root vegetables we have been living off for the past few months. We naturally want ‘lighter’ and more ‘cleansing’ type foods.

It’s very easy to eat many types of fruit and vegetables all year round because of how much is available to us, but it is also good to be aware of what’s in season and try to buy local produce.

One of my favourite springtime vegetables is the lovely liquorice-like herb that can be used in so many ways such as teas, salads and soups.

I am talking about fennel, which is a spice used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It contains vitamin C, potassium, and fibre, among other nutrients, but what does it do for your health?

THis crunchy super food has been used in alternative medicine as an effective aid in treating a variety of ailments including aiding digestive troubles and monthly menstrual cycles, but it's got a whole host of other health-enhancing properties that you may not be aware of: 1. Protects against ageing Fennel is a natural aid for skin care. Fennel seeds, stalks, bulbs, and leaves are all packed with nutrition and are an excellent source of B vitamins.

THese vitamins, including vitamin C, are essential for maintaining good skin health and even promote collagen synthesis to keep the skin firm and tight.

2. Protects against cancers Fennel contains several nutrients that play a vital role in protecting you from cancer. THe herb contains an anti-inflammatory phytonutrient called anethole, which occurs naturally in fennel,

It is said to reduce intestinal spasms and increase motility of the small intestine. It alleviates gastric pain and discomfort associated with indigestion, abdominal bloating, nausea, belching, and flatulence.

4. Relieves menstrual cramps Stress and a poor diet can affect a woman’s regular menstrual cycle. Women often report menstrual cramps and in some cases dysmenorrhea, which is known as painful menstruation. Fennel can help relax the muscles in the body and contains nutrients that are anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, and antispasmodic, which can help reduce and alleviate these symptoms.

5. Reduces obesity THe consumption of fennel helps suppress appetite by creating a feeling of satiety. Fennel is a good source of dietary fibre. It boosts your metabolism while breaking down fats and reducing water retention, which are known to be the common cause of temporary weight gain.

6. Prevents osteoporosis THe fennel bulb contains several nutrients, including, iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and vitamin K, which contribute to building and maintaining strong bones.

THe seeds have a beneficial effect on loss of bone mineral density and bone mineral content in postmenopausal bone loss and osteoporosis.

Bargain buys are big on taste and small on price Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com ALDI remains king in terms of budget wines and thus I duly wended my way to my Aldi store in Chichester in search of such items. I initially commenced a perusal of white wines for under £5 and, remarkably, found a Vignobles Rousselet French Sauvignon Blanc for an outlay of just £4.49.

THis wine sported a citrussy nose along with zesty and zippy lemon, notes of lime and grapefruit and mouthwatering acidity. Vivacious and super summery, this wine is top value, especially compared to New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs!

A veritable price-buster, this dry, sharp wine is an ideal complement to fish pie or pasta and is a mere 11.5 per cent volume, if that be your concern!

For another 30 pence expended, the Chardonnay Pays D'Oc proved to be crispy with juicy white fruit, fresh and slightly creamy in texture, light and refreshing and truly worth a punt at this price!

For just £4.99, a Marlborough Makaraka

Sauvignon Blanc was a decidedly refreshing wine that perks up the taste buds with an abundance of fruit, lemon zest and subtle flavours of mango and pineapple and, at this price, exceeds all expectations!

At a price of £5.49, the Touraine

Sauvignon Blanc of 2016 vintage from the Exquisite Collection failed to disappoint, being clean on the palate and exuding green apples and grassy aromas - a good example with the right minerality!

In terms of red wines, I elected to procure two Australian shiraz wines of

contrasting style. THe 2016 Exquisite Collection South Australia Shiraz is eminently quaffable with ripe red and black fruits and a slightly jammy character.

It is beautifully soft with sweet spices in evidence and culminates in a long finish - an ideal accompaniment to a hearty beef casserole and on sale for £5.79!

THe second Shiraz was a 2016 Iron Horse Shiraz with a brand new yellow tractor on the label retailing for a lofty Aldi price of £6.99.

Fennel Soup

Method 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the quartered fennel bulbs; cook and stir until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Pour in the

Cajun Chicken Pasta

Method 1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add linguini pasta, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until al dente; drain.

2. Meanwhile, place chicken and Cajun seasoning in a bowl, and toss to coat.

Community News & Views A PERFORMANCE of much-loved piano trios will be the feature of the next meeting of Bognor Regis Music Club.

Local players Michael Sullivan, Graham Elliott and Colin Peters will be performing Mendelsohn's trio in D minor and Tchaikovsky's trio in A minor.

THe concert is at 7pm tomorrow at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis. Club chairman Chris Coote said: "We are looking forward to this concert of delightful and accessible music by experienced local performers.

"THere is never a dull moment in both of these works, which are full of delicious melodies and virtuosic passage work."

Freelance violinist and conductor Michael Sullivan (violin) has more than 30 years of experience with the Berkshire, West Sussex and Guernsey Music Services, both as a teacher and in music management.

He studied at Trinity Laban College and is leader of THe Finishing Touch String Quartet.

Cellist Dr Graham Elliott has done extensive session recording and orchestral work with the Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras.

He is on the original Star Wars soundtrack. He has an active local teaching practice and is married to harpist Frances Kelly.

Dr Colin Peters, a gold medallist at the Trinity College of Music, made his performing debut in a weekly series of broadcast piano recitals over a period of two years when he was fulfilling his national service commitments in Egypt.

He studied with Vivian Langrish at the Royal Academy of Music, and has worked in higher education, contributed to and edited a number of books, as well as performing as solo pianist and accompanist to principals from Glyndebourne and Kent Opera companies.

Entry on the night is £9 members, £11 visitors and £5 students.

KEEN gardeners in the Post Newspapers area have been urged to share the joy of their plots this summer to help a hospice.

THey can sign up to take part in this summer's open gardens scheme run by St Wilfrid's Hospice.

THe event showcases bright and beautiful private gardens in the region for the general public to enjoy.

Bosses at the hospice will be opening its garden in Grosvenor Road, Chichester, on July 8 as usual. THey would like others to join them and help to raise funds for the continued work of the hospice. All anyone who takes part needs to do is to provide a warm welcome with a cup of tea and a cake or two for an admission fee of about £3.50.

Among those who have taken part in previous years are Chris and Heather Lock, who shared their delightful garden, pictured above, at Hillside Cottages in West Stoke, with the public.

Heather says: "It's great fun exchanging knowledge with others and a wonderful way to raise money for a worthwhile cause.

"Over the years, we've had some interesting conversations with people, some of whom have come back to us asking for our advice on plant care and so on.

"It can be very social and the tea and cake are an important part of the day, of course."

Gardens of any size and style are welcome to join the scheme.

THey can be small and beautifully formed outdoor spaces, traditional or modern in style, with a quirky layout or daring in design. A hospice spokeswoman said: "If you love it, then other people are bound to appreciate your garden, too. A good range of planting or something unusual or of special interest is enough to inspire other people."

EMPLOYEES in Arun District Council have won another award for the vital property work they provide.

THe council's local land charges service was recognised at the latest Land Data Local Land Charges Awards for the second year in a row. THe occasion saw Arun's team again named as best in the country for customer satisfaction for local authority searches.

THis is the fourth year in all the council's work in carrying out the land and property searches required for conveyancing transactions in England and Wales.

Cllr Jonathan Charles, Arun's cabinet member for residential services, said: "THis is a great achievement and we are delighted that the team that have secured this award for Arun District Council for the second time.

"To be recognised by your valued customers for the high level of service you offer is something to be proud of."

announced this month at a ceremony in a Bristol hotel.

Solicitors and licensed conveyancers from all around the country are asked to nominate and provide feedback on the local authority local land charges team they believe is consistently committed to delivering a high level of customer service.

Nominators take into account quality, efficiency, reliability and value for money.

Jan Boothroyd, Land Data's chief executive, said: "It's a privilege to host these awards as they allow us to recognise the vision and excellent work of local land charges teams and the vital contribution they make to their communities.

"THe standard of entries was again very high this year."

A NEW feature of this year's Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club's annual companion dog show has been announced.

Chairman Pauline Burtenshaw used the club's annual meeting to reveal the introduction of a fun agility and flyball ring.

THis will be a non-competitive addition to the show to allow dogs and handlers the chance to try out these two sports. Dogs must be more than 12 months to compete.

THe club will host the dog show on June 17 at the Bersted Jubilee Hall off Chalcraft Lane.

Mrs Burtenshaw also announced that THW Landscape Construction had agreed to continue as the show's main sponsor. Brick Kiln Garden and Pet Centre will once again be the ring sponsors.

As usual, all proceeds from the show will go a charity in the area. THis year's good cause will be the Lowlands Search Dogs (Sussex), who are based in Aldingbourne.

Mrs Burtenshaw opened the annual meeting last Friday and reported the club had enjoyed another successful year. Its classes had been well attended over a slow start.

All of the existing officers were re-elected and the club also welcomed two new committee members, Debra Saunders and Kim Brown.

It was reported the club's finances were in a healthy situation, with a small profit being shown.

THe report drew special attention to the superb efforts of club members in raising £1,500 mainly from last year's annual show, which was presented to the Sussex Animal Rescue charity at the Christmas party.

THe club runs training sessions every THursday and Friday evening at Felpham Memorial Village Hall. THe times vary between the classes.

THe latest sessions are now in progress. THe next term starts on April 19 and 20.

New members are always welcome, with the first training session free of charge, to allow newcomers to try it out.

Sir, A WAY of councils having extra yearly income is to bring back dog licences.

THere are some eight million-plus dogs in this country.

Let's say the licence fee is £25 and, so, just 2,040 dogs would produce an extra income of £51,000.

Dog owners without a licence could face a £150 fine.

THis might put people off taking on a dog and stop the problem of those who find who can't look after it and then just put the dog out on the street.

Some of the money from the licence could go to the RSPCA, say one per cent.

But the licence would have to be introduced nationally. I remain hopeful.

Railway carriages ended journeys at beaches Surplus rolling stock was converted into seafront homes AT VARIOUS times I have talked about the architecture of the area, and mentioned in some of the articles the railway carriages. I am sure there have been many comments recorded regarding these over the years, but Gerard Young, a local historian in the 1960s, believed that by 'building their shanty town, they had contributed to the English sin of despoiling the coast line, however within recent years, the village had redeemed itself to some extent, spiritually, if not architecturally by displaying a quite magnificent community spirit'.

A feature in a National Heritage Railway magazine brings to life even more information about these carriages. Apparently, around 1918, a policy decision was made by the London Brighton & South Coast Railway to replace many of its existing rolling stock to such an extent Chichester, Bognor Regis and Brighton saw their yards filled with redundant wooden-bodied Victorian carriages.

While some of the carriages were used as holiday homes and also by railway staff, there was mounting pressure on the railway company to utilise their yards more effectively. It decided to either break down the carriages or sell them to the general public. Many of them were bought for £10 to £50 each.

THe transportation of these from the railway to Pagham would be interesting to know fully, but it is thought that some came on trailers pulled by horses. Others were brought into the area by a Ted Broadbridge by horse and drogue timber wagons with a team of two or four horses.

Many came from Bognor Regis station but some, in fact, travelled from Chichester. THese carriages were then arriving on relatively empty sites and thus helped to build up an area which was to become well known as a seaside retreat a place to have a holiday home to use during the summer months.

THe exercise of transporting the carriages and placing them on site must have been enthralling for young boys to stand and watch.

THus, from 1919, a small village began to grow on the beach. On their arrival at a given site they were jacked into position, perhaps after being rolled on logs into awkward locations.

Railway sleepers or blocks would then be used for the final settlement.

I am sure the people who arrived in Pagham in the 1930s as a result of purchasing one of these railway carriages as their holiday home near to the beach, could never have imagined the expansion that would occur in the area over the ensuing years. By that decade, there were almost 250 properties on the beach, a

high percentage of which had begun life as a railway carriage. Today, some of these homes have been transformed. THeir carriages have been fully incorporated into bungalows and the only way you can tell they began life as a railway carriage is that you can occasionally snatch a glimpse of a window reminding the owner they are still in a 'third class' or 'Nonsmoking' carriage, which is still engraved on the window. THere are, of course, new constructions in this area so that in time the railway homes will be long forgotten.

While looking through some postcards showing the railway carriages, it became evident that a ‘G. Morris of Pagham’ was instrumental in recording these railway carriages to enable holidaymakers to send a picture home, no doubt with a message of ‘this is where we are staying’.

THis sent me off on a search to find some information regarding ‘G. Morris of Pagham,’ as shown on the back of the postcards. Some time later, I came across a paperweight I had in my collection for a G. Morris, newsagent, stationer and tobacconist, who operated from Adames Lane, Pagham, with the interestingly low telephone number of 16.

THis then led to another search to find out where Adames Lane is or was. THe answer to this is it has been renamed Sea Lane. As a result of this research into these cards and more discussions on Pagham and the railway homes, I decided to look further into the area.

In 1947, the local authority thought the area had become a ‘shanty town’ and there were plans to demolish it. Residents won their opposition, but again in the 1960s and 70s the council seemed to be bent on destroying the

area, this time by saying that the residences were substandard. Again, residents won their fights.

By the 1980s, a new threat arrived with the suggestion of a possible marina. THankfully, these plans were overcome and many of the railway carriages still exist, albeit many are garden sheds. Sometimes, when homes are sold today, they include the phrase ‘complete with interesting features'. THis can mean original windows, frames or other memorabilia from the original carriages.

THe story of the railway carriages in Felpham is much less recorded. However, the earliest record is that a Mr W.J. Flexman and his son came to the area in 1910. I have found a reference in a 1917 Bognor guide to railway carriage bungalows.

Another record states that it was Archibald Spence who brought the first railway carriage in 1920. I have also read that early owners would retain a dinghy under their homes because of the frequency of flooding. Some of the bungalows were brought to their site

by Mr Seymour, the builder, and here it is reported that they cost in the region of £500.

Both Pagham beach and the Felpham area have over the years come in for many historical reviews and articles in the national and local press and also in certain magazines for the interesting homes that were created with the arrival of these railway carriages.

THe cost of the carriages and their arrival in Pagham and Felpham all require more information so if you can assist I would be most grateful. I wonder if anyone still has any pictures of the actual arrival of these carriages in either location?

High jumper Izzie heads to the mountains as US journey ends CHICHESTER-BORN Isobel Brown has turned to running in the Rocky Mountains as she continues her pursuit of track and field success.

THe talented youngster made her name with a string of impressive performances at youth level for Chichester Athletics Club, culminating in winning the 2011 indoor national championships.

In a bid to further her education and improve her training, high jumper Izzie has spent the last three years competing across the Atlantic while completing a degree at Colorado State University (CSU).

THe highlight was a first place finish in the very competitive Mountain West indoor championships against colleges from across the west of the USA. THat was followed by a third place at the same event outdoors.

Her personal best of 1.78m indoors is ranked fourth all time in CSU history while 1.75m outdoors puts her fifth in the school's record books. But. with the usual heavy winter hitting the US midwest, Izzie has now been

forced away from her usual training schedule.

Instead, she has her eyes on completing a daunting long-distance challenge before returning home in the summer.

Mum Joanne Brown said: “Izzie has taken a break from track now that she has finished her degree.

"THere is no club system in the USA for track and field and, although some running clubs exist, it is nothing like the setup in the UK. "THis, we think, is an opportunity missed as there are facilities in every town, practically at every school and college, but not being used.

"However, Izzie has returned to running and been training all winter in snow and ice for the Horsetooth Half Marathon.

"It's set in the foothills of the Rockies and overlooks her home town of Fort Collins.

Horsetooth Rock is named because the ridges resemble the ridges of a horse’s tooth.

"Izzie’s training is going well, and she is aiming for sub two hours. It will depend on the weather and, like me, she prefers the cold, but there should still be snow on the ground in April."

Dragonflyers enjoy regional success

YOUNG trampolinists are bouncing for joy after sealing regional success.

THe Bognor Regis-based Dragonflyers chalked up two champion gold medals and a further four runner-up spots as they took on the best the south had to offer at the Fleming Park leisure centre in Southampton last weekend.

By the end of the regional finals, five of the club's eight competitors had made it through to the national development finals as part of the southern team.

All of those taking part had to perform two ten-bounce routines.

THe aim was to secure a medal position and gain the national qualification score of 48. Securing both would see the young competitors seal a place in the national event.

In total, six Flyers smashed that benchmark score.

Rosie Budge led the way with a fantastic score of 53.25 in the NDP 5 (13/14 years) category which was enough to win her the gold medal.

THere was double delight in that competition as Flyers' teammate Libby Morton was just behind with 52.85 to take silver.

THere was further success as Izzy Hauxwell

(NDP 6 -15/16 years) and Lucy Hijmans (13/14 years) also sealed runner-up spots with scores of 51.6 and 48.6 respectively.

THe only male Flyer to compete, William Foden, repeated the silver trick in the NDP3 13/14 years category with a mark of 49.9.

All five made regional selection.

THere was a cruel twist in the NDP3 9/10 years event for Manon Bailey, who took gold with an excellent routine but missed out on selection by a mere 0.15 after registering a fantastic score of 47.85.

Fellow Flyer Lily Robinson finished a proud seventh in NDP3 13/14 yrs group, scoring a fraction short of 50.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are a tiny gym and club mark trampoline club with an excellent safety record who enjoy tremendous success at not only regional but national and international level.

"THe club is going from strength to strength.

We are now offering recreational sessions and anyone interested in trampoline lessons can see the full details on our website."

PostSport DARTS: Legends player Gary Blackwood won the Friday Benevolent Darts League secretaries knockout in style, firing a 127-out shot to win the trophy for the second year in a row.

Blackwood, who beat Simon Edwards (Richmond 'B') in the semi final, defeat Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) in a nailbiting final.

Robinson took the first leg after the Legends player missed a finish of 90.

But Blackwood hit back, nailing double 16 to even things up.

THe last leg saw a close game with Robinson hitting a 140, helping him leave 48.

Blackwood was left with 127 and wasn't letting his opponent have another chance. So he stepped up, hitting a treble 20 and single 17 to leave the bullseye, which he hit, taking the out-shot, the win, and the Benevolent Secretaries title for the second year on the trot.

On the same night at Newtown Social Club was the captains' knockout, which saw 14 players take part out of a maximum of 20.

After some keen competition, Adam Judd (Aldingbourne Mavericks) and Colin Mace (Friary 'Z') made it through to the final.

Both players struggled in the first leg with Mace even having one dart bounce out of the board.

Judd struggled on his double, but had enough time, eventually hitting double 5 for the first leg.

THe second leg saw Mace find some form, hitting two 85s and a ton, but Judd was steady, hitting 81, three 60s on the trot, and a ton. Mace left himself 60, hoping for another shot, but it wasn't to be.

Judd had 110 left - he hit the treble 20 and a single 20, then hit double 15, taking the leg, the win, and the Benevolent Captains' title on his first attempt.

BOWLS: Boxgrove-based short mat bowls club Infinity celebrated an excellent weekend of bowling rounded off with winning the division one league championship.

THe good feeling started on Saturday with Jack Rollings winning the County Singles at Westergate.

THat was followed up on Sunday when, despite only having seven out of eight players, the team scored four points to seal the title.

THe team was formed only eight years ago and had to work their way up through the divisions.

THe personnel has changed during that time, with Chris Page being the only founder member.

Next Saturday, Infinity play at Westergate in the Knockout Cup, hoping to win it for a third time.

Chi still in the title race after first defeat of leaders in 2018

Chi want to end on high CHICHESTER RFC hope to finish the season on a high but they must overcome a host of Kentish men as they head into the last four matches of the campaign.

THe Blues have all but secured a fourth place finish in London Division One South after a 20-20 draw with London Cornish last week.

THose two points mean that Scott Ashley's side have lost just once in their past five matches.

But Chi's run-in is a tough one, with three games on the road to round off the season.

It starts tomorrow with a trip to the banks of the THames to face second-place Medway (2pm) who are yet to lose at home all year.

After losing their past two games which has seen them lose top spot, the north Kent side will be raring to go against a Blues side who are starting to show their true colours.

Chi showed their mettle on the road in west London when they fought valiantly in the snow to seal a draw against London Cornish.

Despite making eight changes to the side that beat

Brighton, Blues started brightly and opened the scoring with a penalty try, which also saw the hosts reduced to 14.

Cornish fought back, though, and scored two converted scores to go in at the break 14-7 up.

Chi came out after the break eager to cut the gap. After 19 phases, Sam Drayson picked up the ball and dived over to score.

Both sides swapped penalties before new boy Will Maxfield dived through a tiring Cornish defence to touch down and put Blues into a 20-17 lead.

THe home side rallied, though, and put through a late penalty to see both teams go home honours even. * Bognor can seal a second place finish in Hampshire One tomorrow when they travel to Alresford tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Purple and Greens smashed Ventnor 76-0 in their last match and will be keen to repeat the bonus point victory north of the downs.

Winning the division is all but impossible as undefeated league leaders United Services are 15 points clear with three matches to play.

CHICHESTER City remain well in the race for the SCFL Premier title after inflicting a first league defeat for four months on leaders Horsham YMCA. Miles Rutherford's side scored two second half goals - the first YM have conceded for two months - to take three crucial points from the match under the lights on Tuesday.

Combined with a point from a 0-0 draw with fellow promotion chasers Eastbourne Town on Saturday, Chi now sit fourth in the league, six points behind YM with a game in hand.

After two matches against title rivals, Chi have a slight respite in the coming week, facing 13th place AFC Uckfield tomorrow (3pm) before a home match against midtable Loxwood on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Chi will be full of confidence, though, as second half strikes from Kaleem Haitham and Lorenzo Dolcetti sealed the victory against Horsham YMCA. THis was YM’s first league reverse since November 25, ending a run of eight consecutive wins.

THe opposing manager, Peter Buckland, was full of praise for Chi, adding: "We were beaten by the better side on the night.�

CHICHESTER City Ladies have taken a big step to the next level - by appointing Alan Crozier as the new general manager of the club.

With the FA in the middle of a shake-up at the top level of the women's game, the Oaklands Park side are making preparations behind the scenes to ensure Chi can reach their potential.

Since joining the FA Women's Premier League side in January as business manager, Crozier has helped move the club towards a more professional footing.

But, with the FA introducing new criteria for clubs looking to become part of the newly renamed top two tiers of the game, he has now been promoted to general manager.

Crozier said: "For the club, it's another step forward to the Women's Championship (previously WSL2).

"Right now, we will prepare for the next season so that as a club we can hit the ground running both on and off the pitch."

In his new role, he will take on more of the operational duties at the club.

Last weekend's 4-1 defeat to second-place Langley Wanderers leaves Steve Bailey's side eighth with ten matches still to play this term.

In SCFL Division Two, the cold snap continues to halt Sidlesham's promotion charge.

Daren Pearce's side have now not played for a month and are sixth.

Tomorrow sees them head to Littlehampton's Sportsfield to play secondbottom Clymping (2pm).

Bosham, who have a weekend off, are now above the Sids in fourth after a 5-0 win over Rottingdean Village. Callum Coker (3), Matthew Docherty and Alex Barnes scored the goals.

PAGHAM'S promotion push rolls on - and the Lions will be relying on home comforts as they remain in the hunt for a top-two finish.

Two wins in the past week have furthered Pagham's chances, ensuring that, with nine matches of the season to go, they are six points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA with a game in hand. THe Lions are not the only ones sniffing out potential success - with only nine points separating the top seven sides, meaning the run-in will be a fight to the end.

Pagham have two crucial advantages in the battle royale to come. As well as having the best goal difference in the division, six of their

remaining matches are at Nyetimber Lane.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says he takes full responsibility as the Rocks look all but set to drop out of National South.

Two home defeats in the last week sees the Nyewood Lane side 13 points adrift from safety with just nine matches of the campaign to go.

Pearce has admitted that it now looked likely his side would return to the Isthmian Premier after just one season back in step two.

And while making no announcement on whether he would remain in the dugout next year, he said there would be a full review of all the club's playing activities to ensure Bognor had the best chance possible of returning to National South next year.

Speaking after the 3-1 defeat to Welling United on Tuesday evening, the veteran manager said: "I take full responsibility for the position we are in."

He added: "We have come up short in a number of games not by a long way but by small margins and unfortunately what it does tell us is that the balance of the squad is not good enough at this level to get wins."

After an upturn in performances in recent weeks, Rocks fans were full of hope ahead of the two games.

First up was East THurrock United on Saturday. But, even when faced with an Essex side who have struggled for form in recent weeks, Bognor went behind to an early goal.

Rocks then dominated much of the rest

of the match but could not find the back of the net. With time ticking down, the visitors were awarded a debatable penalty which was converted.

It was much the same story on Tuesday when playoff-chasing Welling took their chances.

Again, Pearce's side fell behind to an early goal, which Adam Coombes slotted home after Bognor gave the ball away cheaply.

Rocks pushed forward for an equaliser but Welling grabbed the inevitable second before the break.

One simple diagonal ball put Jamie Philpott through and he converted to all but seal the win for the visitors.

Welling added a third on the hour mark when Rocks keeper Dan Lincoln failed to claim a cross and Coombes poked home.

A number of Bognor supporters then started to leave the ground, missing a late Ibra Sekajja consolation. It was scant reward for their hard work and endeavour which ultimately lacked the quality and killer touch needed to win points at this level.

Rocks return to action tomorrow, making the long trip to Somerset to face mid-table Weston-Super-Mare (3pm).

THey will be without long-term absentees Corey Heath, Dan Beck, James Crane and Chad Field, while Icelandic youth international Stefan Ljubicic may be unavailable because of international duty.

Club's future will not be risked INJURIES? Suspensions? A lack of signings? A tight budget? A lack of passion?

Standing on the Nye Camp terraces this week, there were lots of reasons being thrown around for why the Rocks are in the position they are. THe week started full of hope as Bognor fans knew there were two matches at home which were genuinely winnable.

But, as has been the norm this term, possession was not converted into chances and chances were not turned into goals.

When the final whistle came on Tuesday, Bognor had suffered two defeats which leaves them all but certain of relegation from National South.

Manager Jack Pearce was blunt about the position faced by the club when the Post spoke to him at length this week.

His interview, printed in full on the right, certainly makes for interesting reading.

THe Post asked him repeatedly about his position in the dugout and a full review will follow this summer.

But what is clear is that the man who has spent most of his adult life nurturing the fortunes of Bognor Regis Football Club will advising against any knee-jerk reactions which will risk the club's long-term future.

THE ROCKS' two defeats in the last week have left them on the verge of the drop.

With relegation on the cards, the Post spoke at length to manager Jack Pearce about where the club goes from here: "If you went to the bookmaker, then it's clear that we would be one of the favourites to be relegated.

"And by their nature, the bookies are normally pretty accurate, that's why they are still in business and most punters are left out of pocket.

"We have to accept that we are struggling and, while it's still not mathematically impossible, we are making it more difficult by the day.

"We have to be realistic and most probably 13 points in nine games will be too much.

"But the most important thing is that the players give maximum effort for the supporters that pay to turn up and pay good money to watch.

"We all have personal pride at stake so it's important that the team keep on playing for our fantastic fans.

"To be in this position, the mood in the dressing room is obviously one of major disappointment as the more games you lose, the more likely it is that we will not be playing at this level next year.

"Our main aim at the start of the season was to stay at this level for next year and beyond.

"I take full responsibility for the position we are in. I do accept it and I don't want to hide behind anyone.

"But you have to realise that we are where we are and all season we have seen that in this division there's not a great deal of difference between all the 22 clubs in the league.

"We have come up short in a number of games not by a long way but by small margins and, unfortunately, what it does tell us is that the balance of the squad is not good enough at this level to get wins.

"It's my responsibility to address that but I've found it impossible to get the players in who will improve that while also fitting in with our wage structure and the location we are in where players are able to regularly attend training.

"I've picked up one or two criticisms from people but noone has actually named anyone who could improve our squad. I believe people have been saying the team lacks passion and desire. But I would say to them analyse what you are saying and then analyse the facts.

"Look at Tuesday - we're low on confidence and the opposition have more experienced, higher

paid players. By the end, we were 3-0 down to individual errors, errors which are unexplainable in some cases as they were committed by good players. Yet we are still enjoying more possession than them.

"What it has ultimately come down to is the two most important areas - which are scoring goals and not letting any in.

"THe highest percentage of goals are scored when the ball is in the opposition area.

"But we have not been able to get the final ball right and, when we have, the finish has not been good enough.

"Other teams have those abilities so that when we make a mistake they tend to convert.

"THat's what it always will be at step two with Bognor Football Club unless we are very lucky with injuries and suspensions.

"Looking to the future, unfortunately, our area is not blessed with many footballers but there's not many proven managers at this level.

"We will as a club look at how we can improve the structure of the team and everything to do with it will be closely monitored.

"If we do go down, then the biggest thing we want to do is to come straight back up.

"Where we are unusual to other clubs who have been relegated from step two is that the majority of clubs have been totally financially skint and owing loads of money.

THis means they have been in a dreadful state and, as a result, struggled to compete the following year.

"We are not in a desperate financial position.

"We will continue to refuse to pay players above the odds; we will be realistic but will be able to compete next year.

"First, though, we have Weston on Saturday, which I'm looking forward to.
