New academy will rise

THe Kemnal Academies Trust has pledged to build the modern facilities on the site of the Selsey Academy wrecked by fire last August.

THe cost of the far-reaching scheme is still to be determined because tenders for the work have yet to be sent out. But the

trust intends the new classrooms to be ready in about two years.

Trust director of education David Linsell said: "Over the coming months, we will be consulting with staff and parents at both Seal Primary Academy and THe Academy Selsey, the local authorities

and the Department for Education and I encourage those in the local community to share their views on how they would like the site to develop. Open meetings will be taking place during January where people can come and share their views."

Merger talks start about future of Chichester College MERGER talks are underway between Chichester College and Central Sussex College.

Any combination of the colleges has the potential to benefit thousands of students across the south east of England and create the largest college group in Sussex.

THe leaders of both colleges believe there are synergies and opportunities to explore about the benefits of coming together but discussions are still in their early stages.

Shelagh Legrave, the principal and chief executive officer of Chichester College, pictured above left, and her counterpart at Central Sussex College, Sarah Wright, above right, said in a joint statement: "We believe that a merger between our colleges will create opportunities around financial sustainability and ensure a diverse and employer-led curriculum to meet local business and community needs.

"We remain committed to ensuring quality teaching and learning and believe that collaboration provides the opportunity to grow income, share costs and work in broader geographical areas."

Chichester College has 15,000 students.

More than 5,000 are full time. Central Sussex College has 18,000 students, of which 3,000 are full-time, at campuses in Crawley, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead (two) and Burgess Hill.

Staff at both colleges were informed of the potential merger in briefings on Monday. News of the discussions was made public the next day.

At the same time, the Area-based Review for Sussex was published. THe review was prompted by the Department for Education last year which set out how the government would support a restructure of the post-16 education and training sector.

Each review should establish the appropriate set of institutions to offer high quality provision based on the current and future needs of learners and employers within an area. THis would mean a move towards 'fewer, larger, more resilient and efficient colleges' with greater collaboration and financial stability.

Chichester College was in the first wave of reviews which began a year ago.

Its verdict on the college stated: "To remain stand-alone at this point but to explore the potential for partnership with (an)other college(s).

"Chichester College is the largest college in Sussex. It has high quality provision and fully meets the financial benchmarks developed for area reviews.

"While the college is capable of standing alone, governors recognise the additional value which would arise from merger or partnership with others both to share costs and to develop new income generation opportunities."

In respect of Central Sussex College, the review said: "THe preferred option... should be a merger with a strong college, with a suitable partner identified as soon as possible."

THe mayor of Chichester, Councillor Peter Budge, was alongside members of Chichester Festival Youth THeatre to switch on the lights at the Christmas tree next to THe Cross.

A spectacular fireworks display then took place next to the cathedral, and school children sung Christmas carols and festive songs.

Cllr Peter Budge addressed the crowd and said: "THank you all for turning up and making Chichester the best city in Sussex and perhaps the best city in the country at the moment.

It follows the first carol service last night at St Wilfrid's Church in Bognor Regis. THe collection from there was divided between the church and the homeless charity, Stonepillow, which has established a strong relationship with the university.

Share views on schools PEOPLE across the county are being asked for their views about proposals for school expansions.

With the number of children in the county increasing, the demand on school places across West Sussex has gradually increased in recent years and these numbers are predicted to rise even further in the future.

Hotspots have been identified in THe Bourne locality, Littlehampton and the coastal strip, and East Grinstead. Now, the public are being asked to share their views.

Christine Field, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “We’re hoping the consultation will determine whether there is support to expand existing schools.

“It’s crucial that members of the public raise any concerns, advice or views on how this might be implemented. THis way, should the proposed plans go ahead, we can ensure that we carry out the changes in the best possible way and with residents’ opinions in the forefront of our minds.”

Recent population changes reflect national trends with more births and larger households, particularly in the urban areas and large villages, as well as growing numbers in response to housing developments.

THe consultation will run until December 21. A drop in session will take place at Bourne Community College in Southourne on Tuesday, December 6, from 2.30pm until 6.30pm. Visit westsussex.gov.uk/ schoolexpansions to comment.

University carollers will bring festive cheer to city's cathedral CAROLLERS from the University of Chichester will be singing in the city next week.

Vocalists and musicians from the university's Chamber Choir, Otter Consort and Brass Ensemble will be raising money for charity when they perform traditional songs and contemporary music for one of their annual Christmas concerts.

THe one in Chichester will take place at 7.30pm on Monday in Chichester Cathedral.

"It brings everybody together in the spirit of Christmas.

"THe amazing thing about it is the number of people who have come."

Hopes are high that deal to protect Pagham is close ` Students enjoy talk about space STUDENTS at a Bognor Regis school were encouraged to reach for the stars when they met a famous astronaut.

THe pupils from THe Regis School had the chance to get close to Tim Peake at a conference about space.

Nikki Manley, a science teacher at the school, said: "We were very excited to be chosen to take part in the conference.

"THe pupils worked incredibly hard on their project and I am hoping attending this conference will inspire and motivate them to reach for the stars."

Earlier this year, the school's pupils became space biologists and embarked on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that had been aboard the International Space Station for six months. THeir success at comparing the seeds to those that had stayed on earth to led to their invitation to the conference in Portsmouth.

"We could reach that point this side of Christmas but it is likely to be just after.

"But all the elements needed to get the scheme approved are melding together.

"It seemed like we were coming up against a brick wall a few months ago but matters are a lot more positive now."

"It's been very upsetting for the people there who are seeing the sea almost coming up to their doors."

Cllr Radmall and Pagham Yacht Club commodore Peter Atkins helped to move 70-80 tons of shingle recently to protect the vulnerable area outside the club.

Ambulance centre helps free up paramedics across area

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk IT HAS been branded as a more efficient centre which will help to improve the way paramedics work - and now the south east's newest ambulance centre has been officially opened.

South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust opened its new Make Ready Centre in Tangmere last Friday.

THe introduction of Make Ready means that the Trust does not require large stations in which to store equipment and restock and maintain vehicles.

A phased opening saw the first crews begin to report to the new centre in August.

While staff work shifts at the new centre, service provided to the region is maintained with staff responding from a number of dedicated Ambulance Community Response Posts, (ACRPs), across the region.

THe new system minimises the risk of cross-infection, frees up front-line staff, who historically have cleaned and restocked ambulances, to spend more time treating patients, and keeps vehicles on the road for longer.

Specially-trained operatives regularly deep-clean, re-stock and check vehicles for mechanical faults.

Clive Burvill, clinical operations manager for SECAmb, said: "We serve

the same geographical area. But we are more efficient because everything is on site here. It's better for the crews.

"It's all on site now. We can do all the servicing and MOT's. THe crews concentrate purely on their clinical work."

Now, staff can attend meetings and take part in training sessions at the site, whereas before they often had to book conference rooms out instead.

Mr Burvill added: "We didn't have learning facilities to accommodate training courses. Now we have got everything we need on site."

And Mr Burvill said the changes have generally been popular with staff.

"We have to move forward. THe crews are much happier. It's a win-win for us.

"It's much better and it's much more cost efficient. THe other sites were leased and we were paying an endless amount of money."

THe site is also very environmentally friendly with solar panels, sensor lighting and the use of rainwater to clean the vehicles.

Guests including local councillors and mayor of Chichester Peter Budge were shown around the new development at the official opening.

SECAmb has now developed five purpose-built Make Ready centres - in Ashford and Paddock Wood in Kent and in Crawley and Polegate. It also has Make Ready Centres in Chertsey, Hastings and THanet.

Discounts for young people FAMILIES with young people with disabilities or special needs are being advised to sign up for a leisure discount card ready for Christmas.

THe Compass Card has more than 120 discounts available for children and young people with disabilities.

Launched in West Sussex in April this year, around 15 per cent of eligible families have already signed up.

It is estimated that there are more than 7,000 children and young people in West Sussex who are eligible.

Offers include money off food bills, free entry to leisure activities for carers, free swimming sessions, free hire of DVD's, CD's and audiobooks, and a range of transport discounts.

Stephen Hillier, cabinet member for Children - Start of Life, said: “THere are already more than 1,100 children benefitting from the discounts available through this card which we know will make a huge difference.

“THe card is helping to break down the barriers which stop people from accessing services and it is also a good way for families to easily find out which activities are suitable for children with disabilities.”

Firms show their support for new Tim Peake exhibition at city museum AS EXCITEMENT builds for the launch of the country’s first Tim Peake exhibition at THe Novium Museum, the event has received a huge rocket fuel boost from three major sponsors.

Academy trust reveals plans for two new schools for Selsey

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk AMBITIOUS plans have been revealed to create a new Selsey Academy.

THe new building is being planned to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the building which was wrecked by fire three months ago.

Its modern facilities will be boosted by a specialist primary facility on the same site. If the proposals are approved, it is expected to take two years to create the latest in education facilities.

THe 400-plus students at the academy will continue to be taught in the temporary Academy village, pictured above, until then.

THe proposals for educational facilities to match the 21st century were announced by THe Kemnal Academies Trust which runs the academy.

David Linsell, the trust's director of education, said: "THe shocking destruction of THe Academy Selsey in August 2016 heralded a period of real uncertainty for the local community and I am very pleased we can now confirm the future of the site.

"Our plans are ambitious but demonstrate our commitment to providing educational excellence for all children who live on the Selsey peninsula."

THe headteacher of Selsey Academy, Tom Garfield, said: "THis is the next step forward for us.

"THe students, staff, parents and members of the local Selsey community have been incredibly supportive through this very difficult period and I am proud that the new development will give us all a school to be proud of.

"THis is a new milestone for us and I can't wait to see the school emerge from behind the hoardings once the plans are finalised."

It was at 7.54am on Sunday, August 21, the alarm was raised about a partition on the roof of the school being alight.

More than 100 firefighters attended the scene in School Lane but the ferocious blaze left the majority of buildings on the site unusable.

THe pupils started the new term in temporary sites around Selsey before they moved in October into the temporary village, which arrived in ten large loads with two cranes.

THe state-of-the-art academy for key stage three and four pupils will be built on the footprint fo the old school building.

THe plans are subject to the agreement of the Department for Education and West Sussex County Council's planning department.

As well as the academy, THe Kenmal Academies Trust proposes to build a specialist primary school.

THis will complement the existing Seal Primary Academy and other primary schools in the area. It will give key stage one and two pupils access to the latest facilities.

Melanie Snodin, the headteacher at Seal Primary Academy, said: "It is rare to be able to provide specialist facilities such as science laboratories and dedicated spaces for music, drama and art to primary children."

Two information meetings will be held next month to discuss the plans.

THe first will take place at Seal Primary Academy at 2pm on January 9 and the second at Selsey Academy at 6.30pm on January 11.

THe event, which will run from 11am to 3pm, is aimed at inspiring people to take part in something new.

Grant for pet rescue centre A CAT and Rabbit Rescue Centre has received a £20,000 grant to enable them to refurbish their barn.

THe centre near Sidlesham received the money from Support Adoption For Pets, the UK’s largest grant giving animal charity.

THe barn accommodates cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

THe charity aims to heal and home cats and rabbits of all ages.

THe Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre has rescued over 10,000 animals since it was established in 1986 and has made a huge number of changes to its rescue facility in order to benefit the animals.

Amy Wilson, charity manager at Support Adoption For Pets, said: “It is a real privilege to help an organisation that works so hard to care for and re-home cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. THey are doing a superb job.”

Chef inspires students

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A FORMER Masterchef winner was on hand to open Chichester College's new restaurant and kitchens.

Steven Edwards, 2013 champion of Masterchef: THe Professionals, is now the creative consultant for the Brighton i360 and owns his own catering company - Etch Food. He spent the day at the college working with students to prepare some of the canapés ahead of the event.

THe college has invested nearly £3 million in the project, which is partly funded by a significant grant made by the Coast to Capital LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership).

Steven said: "It's been a pleasure to work with the students in this fantastic facility.

"It's a really important project to be inspiring the next generation of chefs and waiters in our already growing industry.

We know there are a lot of pressures already around with working and getting the chefs and waiters inspired.

"I couldn't think of anywhere better to start that process.

"THe interaction I got from the students was amazing.

"It's such an amazing space and it allows them to really push the boundaries.

"To be supporting this sort of project means a lot to me. I'm really happy to try and inspire students as best as I can because it's like giving something back."

As part of the refurbishment which took place over eight months, new state-

of-the-art kitchens for student training have been installed, along with a new student-run restaurant and bistro which are both open to the public.

Café 19 and 64 Restaurant & Bar, named for the year the college was founded, gives diners the opportunity to eat food which has been cooked and served by the college’s hospitality and

catering students.

THe kitchens are fully kitted out with the latest technology, including 11 touchscreen oven systems with USB technology which allows them to be programmed away from the kitchen.

Shelagh Legrave, principal of Chichester College, said: "We are extremely proud of our new kitchens and

restaurants, which will give our students the opportunity to develop and hone their skills in a fantastic environment."

Trainee chef Scott Burrows, 23, said: "I think this has been a long time coming.

Here, we have the top quality equipment.

I think it gives me an advantage over other trainee chefs. I am very excited about the future here."

Accompanied by Dean Stephen Waine, Lord Bourne, pictured near left, proceeded around Chichester Cathedral learning about how the cathedral’s work reaches out around the area.

As part of a country-wide tour Lord Bourne is visiting all 42 cathedrals around England, last week stopping at Chichester and Portsmouth.

Lord Bourne had been looking forward to his visit to Chichester.

He said: “I was keen to talk to Stephen about the work of the cathedral with charities involving the homeless and domestic abuse victims.

“I also wanted to see the impact of the money made available by the WWI Fund that’s helping cathedrals across the country.”

Lord Bourne was keen to champion these objectives, highlighting the significance of Chichester Cathedral as a place of history and beauty as well as worship and philanthropy.

He said: “All the cathedrals have character. Chichester Cathedral is stunning and a place of great historic importance.

“People of no faith still visit for its value within the community and history."

Recent statistics from the Church of England show that between 2014 and 2015 the number of people volunteering in cathedrals had risen by 13 per cent and Anglican cathedrals were attracting more worshippers compared to 2005.

How cathedrals are adapting to the modern world while remaining part of our heritage is also a key aspect of Lord Bourne's cathedral tour.

He expressed this during his visit, and said: “Churches and cathedrals are important to the fabric of our country. THey are significant within the community and their charity work is vital to all.”

Bus services could be cut BUS passengers have been urged to make their views known about cutbacks to some services in the Chichester area.

West Sussex County Council has launched a consultation over the likely changes to the routes which connect villages to the city.

THe No.56 Stagecoach link between Old Bosham, Chichester city centre and Arundel Park is set to have its early morning journeys before 7.50am withdrawn.

For the No.150 Compass Travel service, which connects Selsey to East Wittering

and West Itchenor, it could be cut from three days a week to one or two days.

THe services are among 11 routes subsidised by the county council which face changes. THe majority are reductions or withdrawals because of falling passenger numbers.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We need feedback from passengers and local communities so we can understand the potential impact of the proposed changes to these bus routes.

"THe results will be used to determine what, if any, measures should be considered to resolve any issues or concerns that are identified.

"If you use any of these services, and have something to tell us, please take part in the survey."

Also among the proposed changes is a cut in the No.93/96 services around the Midhurst area villages from two days a week to one day.

Record office marks 70 years BESTSELLING local author Kate Mosse joined hundreds of people who helped celebrate the 70th anniversary of West Sussex Record Office in Chichester.

More than 300 visitors took the opportunity to see a fascinating selection of original documents on display including the 'Oslac Charter' of 780AD, the oldest item in the collections.

THere were also film shows, tours behind the scenes and visits to the conservation workshop.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for Residents’ Services, said: “THe Record Office is the custodian of our history, preserving all of these wonderful collections for us and for future generations.

“I am very pleased that so many people were able to come and share this day with us and discover some of the fascinating stories and hidden treasures in our archives.”

THe open day was followed by an evening reception attended by 100 guests, with a specially-decorated

70th anniversary cake cut by Kate.

Kate, who was born in Chichester, spoke about how the archives helped her to research and write her latest novel, The Taxidermist’s Daughter.

She said: “Having access to these wonderful archives - and the skilled staff who support researchers - made working on my latest novel a complete pleasure.

"THey are an incredible local resource.”

County archivist Wendy Walker said: “We’ve had some wonderful feedback from people who attended the event and many of them said they will be coming back to research their family tree or the history of their local area.”

Set up in 1946, the Record Office was originally based at County Hall in Chichester.

It later moved to a purpose built location in Orchard Street where it houses over eight miles of archives dating back more than 1,200 years.

A free booklet with 70 documents to mark the anniversary has been published. Copies are available from the Record Office and local libraries.

IT'S time to nominate young people around Bognor Regis for their brave or selfless actions.

THe town's Rotary clubs are again staging the annual Arun Youth Community Awards and would like to hear about those aged 11-19 who deserve to be recognised.

A spokesman said: "THese awards have become important in recognising the efforts and sacrifices made by young people in our area."

Other categories include bravery, volunteering, raising money and doing well at school.

Nominations have to be received by next January 31 for the presentation evening on March 22.

MAJOR companies have pledged their backing to boost the shopping centre of Bognor Regis.

Big names such as Boots, Greggs, Wilkinson and New Look have signalled their support for a Business Improvement District for the area.

Butlin's, Ladbrokes and the Picturedrome Cinema are also supportive and the University of Chichester is behind the plan as well.

THe heavyweight has delighted town centre manager Toyubur Rahman as he works his way through the legal process required to create a BID. If it is approved, it will produce an expected £180,000 a year in extra business rates to be spent in the district.

"It is good to see these big retailers being interested in the BID. Overall, they are very supportive and understand the need to do something like this.

"THey know the town centre and if they want it to thrive they realise they have a part to play in that," said Mr Rahman.

Some 40 businesses turned up to six workshops he held to explain the benefits of a BID for the town.

It involves creating a small levy probably 1.5 per cent - on the business rates on commercial premises within a designated area. THe money created has to be spent in that area on projects the

businesses have agreed.

Ideas produced at the workshops and an earlier survey by Mr Rahman could well become those which are adopted by the BID if it is approved.

"THe perception of the town centre is the big thing that was raised. THere is an issue with crime and anti-social behaviour and the need to counter that.

"THere was also a desire to improve the parking provision in the town. Calls were made for money to be spent improving the Fitzleet multi-storey car park.

"If that was done, two-thirds of the parking problems in the town would be solved. It would effectively create more parking spaces because motorists would want to use it more often.

"THe existing two-hour free parking there and two other car parks could also be funded to extend it to three or even four hours to encourage more people to shop in the town centre," Mr Rahman said. A more thriving nighttime economy was another desire on the companies' wish list.

Mr Rahman is compiling a business plan for the BID to be put to the firms who have agreed to oversee its initial stages.

Once this is approved, and the councils involved in his appointment agree, a date will be set for the poll to formally seek views to bring the district into being.

Businesses in the designated area will be eligible to vote. THis is set to take place next spring. If the result is 'yes, the district will be created in April 2018 for five years.

Seasonal Seasonal fun fun at museum at museum VINTAGE festive fun was a Christmas cracker at Bognor Regis Museum.

Its volunteers staged their third oldfashioned festive celebration to end the longest season the attraction has known.

A turnout of 60 visitors on the first afternoon last Friday was followed by dozens more the next day before the museum closed for winter on Sunday.

One of those who went along to recall childhood Christmases was Bognorian Deborah Lovett. THe 58-year-old of Plover Close said: "THis has brought back memories of Christmas decorations.

"I love the museum. THere is a really good atmosphere. Everyone is friendly and there is a lot to look at."

Father Christmas joined the regular volunteers for the special opening. Many of the displays were draped with tinsel.

Some of its mock shop windows were also decorated to add to the atmosphere.

fillers for children, One window was packed with decorations from the past. THey included a 730mm high Christmas card holder, icicles, glass decorations for Christmas trees and a bonanza of baubles.

Bognor Regis Local History Society chairman Greg Burt said: "We are really pleased with how our vintage Christmas opening has gone. It's all about showing the museum is a fun and interesting place.

"We've had a great turnout and we've been busy in our shop. THis is the first time we've been open during November and we're pleased with the number of people we have had coming to see us.

"We may well repeat it next year. We also hope to change the museum for 2017 so visitors will be able to see where we would like to put the town's surviving bathing hut."

Beauty and the Beast bring town lights to life

THe town is one of just two in Britain to benefit from the latest technology to ensure its festive illuminations look good whatever the weather.

Only Brighton, along the coast, can boast the same technology for its decorations.

THe use of the system on a free trial treated the hundreds of spectators who watched the panto stars of Beauty and the Beast join the town mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon for the countdown, to a spontaneous switch-on.

All the decorations, also new for this year, instantly came to life above the London Road precinct and along the High Street, Station Road and London Road's northern section.

Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick said: "THe switch on has gone well.

"We are one of the few towns in the country to use this wireless system and it only took one press of a button to bring all the illuminations to life."

THe system's manufacturer, Gala Lights owner Chris Stillem, said: "I'm very pleased with how the ceremony went.

"What we have created is a wi-fi network where all the decorations talk to each other and go and off at the same time through GPS. "THey have been programmed to come on at the same time every day. But the town council has an app which means its officers can vary that according to the weather.

f The new lights shine above the precinct "If it's a really gloomy afternoon, they can easily make the lighting come on earlier.

"THere are a couple of things to iron out but this method could be the future for street illuminations."

Bognor Regis was chosen for the trial because its decorations are arranged in a cross formation and are the required distance of at least 50m apart from each other.

"THere are also a lot of decorations in a compact area," he said. THe price of the new system was comparable to the traditional way.

James Tyson, a director of Merlin Lighting, installed the illuminations.

He said: "We're based in Barnham so Bognor Regis is our nearest town for Christmas lights and we want to help make them look as good as possible.

"In the past, we would have had a team of men up ladders switching on various sets of lights once the countdown had finished.

THat's why the lights came on in stages."

THe switch on took place on a stage at the junction of the High Street and London Road, with that section closed to all traffic.

THat allowed some 500 people of all ages to fill the space between the stage and the shops.

Ms Fitzpatrick said: "We've taken advantage of the new square created by the changes to the High Street and it has worked well for us.

"THis has been the biggest occasion we've had in the six years I've been organising the switch on.

"I've not seen a crowd of that size here before and I would say we have absolutely rocked the afternoon and evening."

Santa, snow and sounds at switch-on FIVE hours of entertainment saw Christmas officially start in Bognor Regis.

THe afternoon of music and fun ensured a lively build up to the switch on of the town's impressive Christmas lights last Saturday.

THe decorations are the first to be installed in a deal between Bognor Regis Town Council and Merlin Lighting after bad weather last year damaged some of the previous illuminations .

THe seven gold and blue giant snowflakes above the London Road precinct bring a warm and distinctive feel to the lighting.

THe High Street has six snowflakes and York Road one while Station Road and the northern section of London Road have bright white icicles.

Queensway resident Rosie Walters, 39, said she was pleased to see the lighting brighten up the town centre again.

"Living right in the town, it's lovely to see the lights back. It's worthwhile the council arranging for them every year.

"THe event is lovely today. It's always very good for the switch on and it's great to have the Christmas workshop here because the children enjoy getting into it," she said.

Her daughter, Ebony Walters, nine, said: "I'm enjoying making Santa Claus. I chose him because I think he is the best and he

will go with the Christmas decorations. I can make the other models at home.

THe Children's Workshop UK stand offered children the chance to make either Father Christmas, an angel, a penguin, a Christmas tree and a snowman for free.

Jess Carvill, who ran the attraction, said: "We've been really busy today after the first half hour.

"I would say we've had 150-200 children come here, which is good for the winter."

Outside, a succession of acts kept the crowd entertained. Noble Jacks were the headliners with their upbeat folky footstompin' rhythms. Others on stage were the Ultimate Gary Barlow Experience, Cheryl Craven and Anna Foye.

Two-thirds of the precinct were filled with rides and two illuminated icicle queen stilt walkers provided plenty of interest. And fake snow machines above the precinct brought squeals of delight.

One of those to be covered in the foam-type material was Beau Arnold, seven, of Victoria Drive.

He said: "It was the first time I've seen the snow and I was excited to be covered in it."

` Gates will recall Lec's former site

f Panto performers delighted the crowd

LEC Refrigeration is to be remembered with a set of gates from its former Bognor Regis factory.

THe gates once stood at the original entrance to the site off Shripney Road which employed up to 2,000 workers making fridges and freezers.

Planning approval for the gates has been given by Arun District Council planning officer Simon Davis. He says in his report: "THe proposed installation will appear slightly at odds with the backdrop of Sainsbury's car park.

"But it is important to have regard to the historic significance of the gates and the history of the site which the installation seeks to reflect.

"THe structure is considered to be interesting and will be supported by flanking information boards."

As reported, the tribute to Lec has been put forward by Dicentra Developments. THe gates will be sited just off Shripney Road next to the Sainsbury's access road.

THey will be protected by a clear perspex screen. History boards about Lec will be on both sides.

THe Lec factory shut in 2007 and Sainsbury's opened four years ago.

Offbeat version of Christmas is a hit

Lewis hits the target for centre A LATE goal by Lewis Pickering ensured Aldingbourne Country Centre won the cup in its annual open football tournament for adults with learning disabilities.

His crisp volley from a corner from Christian Roberts gave the centre a 1-0 victory over Out THere West Sussex in a closely contested game.

THe result was tough on Out THere who had dominated the match only to be repeatedly denied by the brilliance of Aldingbourne's keeper, Robert Fox. Scoring the winner made up for the disappointment of Pickering in missing out in the penalty shoot-out final to Out THere's Warren Time after more than 100 hopefuls had started the contest.

A county centre spokeswoman said: "Ten teams from around Sussex took part and enjoyed playing on the pristinely manicured turf at Arundel Castle Cricket Club.

"THe true spirit of the game was on show for the full day with many great goals and lots of fun being had."

Arundel's director of cricket, John Barclay, stepped in to accommodate the event because the centre was unable to host it due to site developments.

THe tournament has grown since it began in 2010 and this year's also benefited from the help of Christ's Hospital pupils with warm up sessions and refereeing and Pagham CC's Mandy Burgess with the barbecue.

EVERY seat was taken and children sat on the floor as panto got cranky in Yapton.

THe special, rib-tickling one night only performance of A Lad in a Manger was a sell-out in Yapton and Ford Village Hall last Saturday.

THere were two Dames, a lovable donkey, the Angel of the North and the child-hating but sweets-loving Herod to provide plenty of festive entertainment for the sizeable audience.

Tim Bell, the press officer for St Mary's Church in Yapton, said: "It was the much-loved story of the birth of Jesus with an hilarious pantomime twist, but it kept the sensitivity."

THe rector at the church, the Rev Stephen Hayes, played a very rustic and musical shepherd.

THe cast also featured the Rev Bill Garlick as the evil king Herod, or Hairpiece to the rest of the cast.

Other performers included David Rainer as Jo (Joseph), Lesley Vigar as Mary, Ben Taylor as the donkey, Aaron Morrissey as Widow Aggie and Rob Allison as Widow Kim the cleaners, and Pippa Richardson as the Angel of the North (Gabriel).

THe choir of St Mary's Church provided the backings for the vocals.

THe show was directed by Aaron Morrissey and Dean Holden, with musical direction by Tracey Hayes.

Mark Taylor handled the sound and lighting.

Seemingly ordinary Mr Popper works as a painter and decorator but secretly he dreams of Antarctic adventures.

His life is then turned upside-down when a crate arrives on his doorstep, from out which waddles a penguin! Mr Popper must learn how to look after his new friend and try to avoid chaos at all costs.

THe situation begins to escalate when even more penguins totter into Mr Popper's life! How will he manage to provide the penguins with everything they need, and will his dreams of adventures in the South Pole ever be realised?

THis new musical production is based on the popular 1938 children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater of the same name. In 2011 a film adaptation of Mr Popper’s Penguins starring Jim Carrey was released grossing $187 at the box office.

THe stage version also looks to be highly popular and it is playing at various theatres before reaching the Criterion THeatre in London.

Try the Tapas at Sensational Sen! THE 1st day of November -Autumn has arrived, so on such a dark, dull, chilly Monday evening it was with great pleasure that myself and a companion entered the cosy warmth of Sen, Restaurant and Tapas Bar. It’s like a little piece of the Mediterranean in the heart of Bognor Regis with it’s red themed walls, adorned with mosaics, guitars, bullfighters and fans. The premises is bigger than it seems a first glance with tables stretching back to the a very pleasant compact garden area with lighting and seating. We sat at the front and watched the world go by, at a table for two.

We were keen to sample a variety of food from the extensive menu, and so a

selection of Tapas was an ideal way to do this. Tapas are small Spanish appetizers, which can be shared and enjoyed by many people, so a great choice if you are dining as a group, and wanting to try a little of everything.

After a starter of taramasalata and warm bread to dip the main feast started to arrive- and it just kept on comingdish after dish of delicacies and delights.

My companion is especially fond of Patatas ali-oli, mini roast potatoes with garlic mayonnaise- they made a great accompaniment to the various meat and fish dishes.

We sampled the Gambas pil pil, delectable prawns cooked in olive oil with chili and garlic, Pollo Clive, cubes

of chicken breast in a tomato and a coriander chilli sauce, a warm and spicy dish, but not overpoweringly hot. The Chorizo al vino Blanco, spicy Spanish sausage sliced and sautéed with onions and white wine, and the pork loin, tender and sliced and served with a delicate tomato sauce.

To accompany the various meat and fish dishes were mushrooms, fried with garlic, fresh herbs and white wine, and a very unusual spinach dish, comprising creamy luscious fresh creamed Spinach cooked with sultanas, onions, cream and mozzarella cheese.

Each dish was steaming hot and served in small earthenware dishes, in traditional Tapas style, with plenty of

fresh salad garnish to offset the richness of the various dishes.

It was a true feast of all the senses, a profusion of wonderful Mediterranean flavors begging to be tried and combined.

Just when we thought there was no more to come, the homemade garlic bread was brought over, the perfect way to dip into the various sauces and mop the plates clean of the various sauces- irresistible.

We were certainly full and satisfied, but still could not resist trying the homemade Turkish Rice Pudding- a creamy white delight with pistachios and a sprinkling of nutmeg which we shared, although I could have easily managed a whole one to myself!

Over coffee we chatted with the

amiable owner, who is known to customers as Mr. Happy- for very good reason! He explained that the food is freshly delivered daily, and specialist ingredients such as garlic and blue cheese are sourced from all over the world as well as locally -the blue cheese for example from a small village in Spain, the chicken from Amsterdam, and the seafood fresh every day from a local supplier, Browns.

Mr Happy is very proud of Sen and all it offers, and with good reason, as it is one of the finest restaurants in the area.

I never thought I would be relaxed about a train delay, but if I was not in a big hurry, I’d be very pleased to have an excuse to eat at the Foundry, situated conveniently adjacent to Chichester Railway Station. The Restaurant has ample parking too, and I was able to park conveniently right outside ready to try their lunch time menu.

The Foundry has been extensively renovated and refurbished thanks to the new owners, John and Gemma Whelen, and an amazing job they have done of it too.

The décor is outstanding and has clearly been designed by a professional designer, offering muted teals, augmented with black and white, and a harmonious mixture of woodwork and flooring , stylish colourful lighting, and interesting features such as an old gramophone and even a wall decorated entirely with one pence pieces- a real conversation point.

The result comes together beautifully to create an charmingly eye catching venue, comprising a large bar area, dining area, seating areas, and even a small raised stage, where I was told they have occasional live music at the weekends and a late licence to

enable diners to enjoy a relaxed evening out without being rushed.

I took my seat in the airy and light dining area, and was greeted and served by Sean the manager, who was extremely helpful and friendly. He is clearly very proud of The Foundry and all it has to offer, and rightly so. Families, friends, couples, and even lone females would be right at home there, in the chilled and relaxed atmosphere, with familiar background music and sport on the large screen TV in the bar area, making it appealing to a wide range of customers.

Sean brought me over the regular menu and advised that they also boast a special menu, which changes daily and is written up on the blackboard; all food is sourced locally, their fish always fresh- never frozen, and they use local vegetables and meat, even the coffee, he said, is supplied by a local firm who import directly. They are happy to offer sandwiches and snacks to those waiting for trains or embarking on a journey too.

After some deliberation, the thought of having freshly caught fish fillet, handbattered in a beer batter, tempted me into ordering that great British classic. I did not have to

wait very long for it to arrive- a spectacularly large piece of golden battered fish lightly garnished with parsley, and served with sweet green peas and a pot of creamy piquant tartar sauce on the side. An exceptionally delicate light crispy batter, concealing moist, thick flakes of pristine fresh white fish, on a heap of hot golden chips rivalling any seaside fish and chip shop. I enjoyed every flavoursome mouthful; you can’t beat a really good fish and chips and this was, without doubt , one of the best I have ever had.

Being a person with little will power, my determination to resist dessert was soon overturned when I examined the menu again, and spotted the chocolate brownie. A good sized square of luscious brown chocolate criss crossed with a deep chocolaty sauce, and topped off with a big ball of glossy white ice cream was soon bought my way. The heavenly warm crunchy nutty outer shell, with gooey middle- the perfect brownie,

complimented by creamy cold vanilla ice cream was simply delicious.

I rounded my lunch off with a creamy frothy latte, with a big rich roasted flavour, before having a last chat with the exceptionally friendly staff, and taking a quick look round.

It was a wet and windy day, but I ventured out to see the garden, and this will certainly be a big attraction in summer, with plenty of seating, lights, and canopies.

The Foundry has transformed itself under the new ownership and moved far away from the traditional pub of yesteryear, it is now a bright, clean, stylish and welcoming establishment, with something for everyone, and a very reasonably priced menu with all the favourite Classics including burgers, pasta, and Sunday Roasts. They can offer group bookings and Christmas Parties as well as lunches, snacks on the go, evening dinners or anything in between. I will definitely be eating there again.

QUEL weekend! Friday night wine tasting at a Gusto Wines event, courtesy of gentleman Jim Brooks, and one which I will feature next week. Saturday night - sampling the delights of the Coda Chamber Ensemble and being as transfixed as my fellow concert goers by the dulcet tones of seven fine musicians interpreting the music of legendary Pink Floyd, in classical style at the homely Chichester Inn. What about the wine, you may well quip, well, not being able to resist a bargain, it came to my notice that Sainsbury's have resurrected their 25 per cent off offer on six bottles or more purchased until this coming Saturday, December 3. By Jove, off I scurried and initially espied a Bollinger Special Cuvée reduced to £30, and down to £22.50 if part of six or more bottles.

If you like your Champagne full and rich with toasted fresh brioche and appreciate super-fine bubbles which fill your mouth and leave a luxuriously creamy feel, then this is the one for you - a veritable bargain and a definite

Turning my attention to white wines, the Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc at an offer price of £7.50 is a refreshing wine

METHOD 1. In a medium sized stock pot or saucepan bring the broth to a boil.

2. Add the onion, ginger, garlic and salt. Cook on medium-low heat for 20 minutes.

3. In a medium-sized, heat-safe mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter and tomato paste 4. THen transfer 1 to 2 cups of the hot stock to the bowl.

5. Whisk the mixture together until smooth, then pour the peanut mixture back into the soup and mix well.

6. Stir in the collard greens or kale and season the soup with hot sauce to

taste.

7. Simmer for about 15 more minutes on medium-low heat, stirring often.

8. Serve over cooked brown rice if you'd like, and top with a sprinkle of chopped peanuts.

Based from a traditional West African recipe this peanut soup is nourishing and healthy.

Not only is it simple and quick to make, but it is hearty and warming - perfect for a winter's evening.

Fatigue: more than just feeling tired LIFE is busy, right? Everyone has weeks where they work hard and play hard and feel exhausted. However, fatigue is different from those types of feelings.

Fatigue includes feeling weak, experiencing muscle pain and sometimes swollen glands and a general lacking of energy. When we do something strenuous, our bodies can feel tired because they need to rest and repair themselves.

THe difference between fatigue and being tired is that, with rest, feelings of tiredness go away.

THere are several factors which can contribute to feelings of fatigue. Some of them are medical conditions, some are lifestyle factors, and some others are psychological problems. Physical activity, a sedentary lifestyle, poor sleeping habits, excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, and a processed food based diet can all have an impact on your energy levels. THat’s why staying fit and energetic is so important.

Once a person makes the connection between food and how they feel it's easy to realise how much it’s worth making the effort to look after yourself. Life is so much more enjoyable when you have the energy to do the things you love.

Mouth-watering work on show

Michael's first illustration for the River Cottage A-Z Cookbook was a brill

INTERNATIONAL artist Michael Firth is opening his new studio in Bosham with an exhibition of his work for a top chef.

Michael is putting on show all 76 of his critically-acclaimed watercolours from the River Cottage A-Z Cookbook.

Depicting an array of livestock, fish, seafood and fungi, fruit, spices and vegetables, Michael's original watercolour artwork for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's latest book can be viewed from December 9-12. THe setting is suitably rustic - his studio is a semi-converted barn at Harts Farm in Hoe Lane, Bosham.

His work is also on show in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Michael began the cookbook project a year ago with an illustration of a flat fish, a brill, and had just six months to complete the rest of the book.

"I had to work very quickly but I'm used to it because of my many years providing illustrations for national newspapers such as The Sunday Times," he said.

He was briefed beforehand on the position and size of the required illustrations - some full page, others vignettes - intended to heighten readers' interest and titillate their palates.

THey clearly did the job, with The Daily Telegraph describing the end results as 'glorious'.

Michael began by producing a series of rough pencil sketches and then moved on to full colour artwork.

"THe pineapple was the most difficult to paint because of its intricacy. My favourites were the fish and crustaceans. It's the association with water and the reflections that come through. Half a pumpkin doesn't have the same allure," he said.

Michael has lived and worked in West Sussex for more than 30 years. THe exhibition will also features his work in progress, Moonscapes, a series of night studies of his favourite haunts - Chichester Harbour, West Stoke Wood and South Harting Hill.

THe series was inspired by last month's 'supermoon', when the gap between the earth and the moon was at its shortest point for nearly 70 years.

Michael said: "Cloud covered most of the country the night of the full supermoon but I went out the night before, when it was already close, so I got a good idea of what it was to look like.

"I've always liked the effect of the moon on the sea and woodlands and this rare moon has challenged me to do some large watercolours."

THroughout November, Michael spent two hours at a time, armed with a torch, sitting and walking about damp woodlands to observe the colour of moonlight and then recreating it in his studio.

"THe colour is almost intangible constantly changing," he said. "THat's not to say there isn't a lot of colour because there is. It's just not what we are used to seeing.

So, we have to keep on looking until we perceive it. What's more it is not possible to reproduce until I'm back in the studio and then I'm working in daylight attempting to capture the night."

THe intense colour in Michael's paintings, which could be mistaken for oils, reflect his desire to show that watercolours are neither wishy-washy nor merely a sketching medium. THis has also led him to paint large portraits in the same medium.

"I wanted to shake up the watercolour world, rattle its cages," he explained.

He achieved this with his larger-than-life portrait of the controversial newspaper baron Robert Maxwell the first watercolour the National Portrait Gallery bought for its 20th century permanent collection.

"To achieve the depth of colour you don't normally get with watercolour, I mix the paint so it flows but only just," he added.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

AS YOU can imagine I actually do read statistical information because as a growing organisation we need to know such detail but my absolute favourite is a good read for anyone who likes to know the key issues that will impact us – West Sussex Life 20172019 is a jolly good read.

THe latest edition of West Sussex Life 2017-2019 - which gives a statistical snapshot of daily life in our county - is now in your library and available online to residents, businesses and communities.

THe free publication is a comprehensive research tool put together by West Sussex County Council. It’s the go-to tool for anything you want to know about the county and is packed with easy-to-understand information relating to all aspects of daily life for residents and communities – including an Arun and Chichester perspective.

Startling facts such as people receiving ‘meals on wheels’ only see another person once a fortnight. Arun saw the biggest growth in 65+ populations, rising to 4,668 people – of which 23 per cent said they were moderately or severely lonely.

Chichester came out as the least affordable area to live in West Sussex, yet the statistics for those on benefits in this area is surprisingly high.

How about this fact – there are 25,000 more women than men in the county.

Or is this surprising? Just over 19,000 people in West Sussex speak something other than English as their first language the largest group being those who speak Polish. For those who said it is not their first language, 83 per cent said they could still speak English well or very well. Only around 900 said they did not speak English at all.

Another nugget - the annual cost of alcohol-related harm in the UK is estimated to be £21 billion. 96 per cent of GPs in West Sussex said alcohol misuse had been raised as a concern during a health appointment in the past 12 months. Arun had the second highest number of alcohol-related admissions to hospital in the county.

It delightfully contains rather obscure facts like how many bins have been emptied or the detail about use of libraries.

So if you have a burning desire to find some facts or you love statistical info pop in your library or download it on the iPad and read it on your bus journey...it really is in a fabulous format that actually makes it quite compelling. Really.

For us, the report simply helps us access funds by providing important key local data that helps us focus on the right services, prove our point and we can project the future.

INDEPENDENT authors had a happy ending with their Love to Read party in Chichester.

THe members of CHINDI raised just under £750 at a party for Dyslexia Action.

Bognor Regis-based author Helen Christmas organised the fundraiser. She said: "We had about 100 guests with all the door money going directly to the charity.

"THis is the second event we've held at the Pallant Suite and, with the pay bar and great sound system, it is perfect for a launch party."

ONE of the most popular events in the social calendar of Bognor Regis Twinning Association attracted about 70 members, pictured above.

THe annual Beaujolais Bistro saw some past members who came to the town for the latest of the popular get-togethers.

It was held at the Rowland Rank Centre in Aldwick.

She thanked the companies which donated more than £600 worth of prizes for the raffle.

THe authors introduced their books by reading extracts on stage and the evening was topped off by local band Dung, who play free for charity.

Dyslexia Action has more than 40 years' experience in providing services and support to people with literacy and numeracy difficulties.

Helen added: "We plan to hold more events in 2017 to support the charity."

Beaujolais - the connection being that Bognor Regis' first twin town was St Maur des Fosses, close to Paris in 1984.

It is also twinned with Trebbin and Weil am Rhein.

THe next social function members have to look forward to is the Christmas party on December 10 at the home of Heather Perrot.

Another future event, of which details are yet to be announced, is the forthcoming annual general meeting next January.

Dear Sir, Having read the report about Blake’s Cottage in the Post (18/11/16) I felt that I had to respond in order to clarify some points and bring about balance in the report which sadly was lacking.

It was disappointing to find that the Post has given this coverage without comment from members of the Trust who now own the cottage.

When plans were being made to purchase the cottage I was approached to see if I and the county council could support this venture. I did not hesitate to show my approval for this scheme as I am a great believer in preserving our heritage.

Following this approach I wrote to Louise Goldsmith, the Leader of West Sussex County Council to see if we as a County Council could help. A meeting was set up and she showed great enthusiasm for supporting the purchase of the Cottage. An application to the Members Big Society Fund supported by myself was submitted and a grant of £10,000 was awarded towards the purchase costs.

I would like to make it very clear that the objectives of the purchase were made very evident to me from the very beginning and have not changed since despite what Beryl Kingston, pictured below, has to say about this.

Tim Heath stated quite clearly that they wanted to demolish the modern 1970s addition at the rear of the cottage and return it to a period cottage when Blake lived there. THey also intended building a visitor centre on the site.

THere is one important point that has to be made and that the trust does intend allowing public access contrary to the rumourmongering that Beryl Kingston is promoting in the village. THe size and siting of the cottage do not allow for coach-

-loads of visitors nor would the residents of Felpham want to see that. THe opening of the cottage has to be carefully managed and there will be times when the public will be allowed in.

In addition to this, steps have recently been taken to secure the structure contrary to what is being said. THe state of the cottage is not an overnight occurrence and has been in decay for many years.

Why is it that Beryl Kingston has all of a sudden become concerned about this? Did she not petition the previous owner about the state of the cottage? I doubt it very much.

I have been aware of the views being promoted by Beryl Kingstone and her colleagues for some time now and am very angry at the line being followed.

Just to make readers aware, the bad press that has been generated

by Beryl Kingston has undermined the efforts I have made in gaining interest and support from the county council. THe opportunity to attract large sums of financial backing has been jeopardised as a result of the negative campaign being orchestrated. Further applications for public money are probably doomed to failure.

THe cottage is in new ownership and quite what Beryl hopes to achieve I do not know. Finally, I would urge all those who attended the meeting in Felpham to reject what has been said and get behind the Trust.

THe trust always said that a substantial sum of money would be needed for the work intended and it is reasonable to expect that they could achieve the target sum of money with support from the wider community. THere is much to do and I just do not want to see this project being undermined. THis crusade against the Trust is very damaging and it has to stop!

Shortly after in 1961 the Royal Sussex Regiment left the barracks.

In 1963, the barracks became the training base, and home of, THe Royal Military Police (RMP).

THe Queen was invited to lunch after inspecting the barracks in 1978 to mark the centenary of the Royal Military Police formation.

THis anniversary saw the start of the ‘friendly’ RMP annual march which continued until 1992.

In 1982, during the Falklands War, Captain Alfredo Astiz - an Argentinian Prisoner Of War - was flown to Britain and held prisoner at the barracks (specifically in THe Keep by the west entrance) under the watch of the RMP. He was wanted by both the French and Swedish authorities for the ‘disappearances’ (and presumed murders) of some of their citizens.

THe UK government eventually decided they did not have the necessary authority to try him, because the crimes for which he had been accused did not involve British nationals.

He was later returned to Argentina. In 2005 the Royal Military Police took the decision to move from their longstanding headquarters at Roussillon Barracks to Southwick Park, near Portsmouth.

An official closing ceremony and "Beating Retreat” was held on Saturday 10th September 2005.

As a result of the move the majority of the barracks became surplus to the Ministry of Defence’s requirements and the land was sold off for redevelopment.

THe Royal Sussex Regiment is commemorated in brick pillars with brass plaques which have been built at the western entrance and the adjacent building named Sussex House.

With an an all-new interior, offering greater space and improved passenger comfort, the fourth-generation model is the most practical Sportage yet. In the front, drivers can enjoy more legroom, as well as the comfort of the redesigned seats.

The Sportage can now be specified with three-way front heat seating, 10-way power control with lumbar support for the driver’s seat and eight-way power control for the passenger seat. Stiffer seat frames, with greater use of high tensile steel, and redesigned springs and pads – for front and rear – cut the level of vibration in the seats, while reducing seat weight by 2.5 kg and improving durability.

In the rear, a 40 mm lower interior floor – without sacrificing exterior ground clearance – and 30 mm higher rear bench hip point mean second-row passengers benefit from a more natural and comfortable seating posture and improved under-thigh support.

The new body’s larger dimensions mean cargo space in the fourth-generation Sportage has expanded from 465 litres to 503 litres

(VDA), made more practical by a dual-height luggage floor, allowing taller items to fit into the boot and still remain hidden by the tonneau cover.

The Sportage also features a new under-floor tonneau cover storage area – unique in the class. Despite the new Sportage being no wider than the outgoing model, by re-engineering the rear section of the body the luggage area is 35 mm wider, while the upper edge of the boot lip is lowered so the lift-over height for heavy items is just 732 mm (down 47 mm).

The all-new Sportage has greater fuel capacity, with the increased size of the fuel tank, now 62 litres compared to the previous 58. Key to the comfort of the passengers is improved in the new Sportage by Kia engineers to cut noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

Significant changes render the Sportage one of the most refined cars in its class, with less cabin noise than many other rivals in the C-SUV segment. The new Sportage is also the safest Sportage yet with a stronger body and a wealth of active safety systems.

CHICHESTER women's hockey captain Meg Goring says her side are on track for promotion after they continued their strong start to the season with a 5-1 win against South Saxons.

A hat-trick from Polish overseas star Patti Hyla, plus individual efforts from Goring and Demelza Peake, helped Chi overcome a sluggish start.

THe victory moves them to third in the Sussex Women's League, three points behind the leaders..

Next up is a top of the table clash with Brighton and Hove 2nds tomorrow (2pm) - with Chi knowing a win could put them in a promotion place.

Speaking to the Post, Goring said: "It is a big game. We have

a full squad of 16 available and we're more than ready for the match.

"We know that if we win we are on course for the title as we are way ahead on goal difference."

Chi have performed well this campaign, keen to do better than last season's third place.

THe loss of six players in the off-season has not hampered progress with a new coaching team, which includes former GB player Jason Collins, getting the best out of the squad.

So far they have lost just once in the league.

A day out at the Olympic hockey stadium in Lee Valley is also possible - with Chi in the quarter finals of the national knock-out vase.

Chant had knocked out three time champion Derrick Longhurst (Squash Club) in the first round, but had a tougher fight against Barton. It went to a decider where Chant took out the double in two darts to finish the leg.

THe second semi-final saw Andy Cooper (Squash Club) against Richard Pennells (POW Galleon), who had beaten four time champion, Roger Hackett (Squash Club), in the first round.

It was Cooper who prevailed though winning 2-0.

THe final saw Chant win the bull for the first throw, but the game started even with only 1 point between them.

Cooper hit a ton, but Chant followed with one of his own, and then a 140. After 20 darts the first leg was Chant's. THe second leg saw both players hit a ton, but Cooper took the lead, hitting the double after 23 darts. THe last leg saw the better start from Chant, but a 180 from Cooper gave him the first chance at the double, but it was a chance he missed. Chant took the opportunity, and hit his double to regain the Over 60s knockout champion title.

THe Ladies knockout saw nine players take part, the second worst turnout in at least 13 years.

Ellie Gostick (Richmond Rebels) met Rachel Hall (Aldingbourne Mavericks) in the first semi-final with the former winning the game 2-0.

THe second semi-final saw Aldingbourne Mavericks team mates Paula Duckett & Emma Bist face each other with Bist's clinical nature taking her through to the last match.

THe final saw Gostick win the first throw, but start poorly. Meanwhile Bist was steady and easing into the lead. A score of 81 from Bist was followed by an 85 from Gostick, but Bist was already on her double. A few missed darts let Gostick catch up, but with 5 left, Bist hit single 3 and double 1 to take the first leg. THe second leg again saw Bist scoring steadily over the up and down scores of Gostick. At the end of the leg Bist scored an 81 & 127, followed by single 18, single 12 and double top to score an out-shot of 70, taking the leg, and the win, taking the Benevolent Ladies knockout champion title for this year.

Chi verging on Vase history CHICHESTER city are on the verge of making fa vase history with the side just one win away from equalling the club's best ever performance in the competition.

THe Lillywhites travel to fellow SCFL Premier side Newhaven in the third round of the national non-league competition tomorrow (3pm).

A win will take Miles Rutherford's side into the last 32 of the Vase, matching the achievements of the Chi side of 1995/6 who reached the same stage.

Despite the potential of a game anywhere in the country and becoming history makers in the process, the manager says all eyes are currently focussed on the task in hand.

Speaking to the Post, Rutherford said: "Newhaven are a good side and with striker Lee Robinson up front they are always dangerous. But it is a game we can win and that's all we are thinking about.

"It's a very important game and it just depends on the day.

We are all looking forward to it and I hope we can move into the next round."

Rutherford's side bounced back from a disappointing and surprising 3-1 loss to lower league Langney Wanderers in the Peter Bentley cup by comprehensively dispatching bottom side Hailsham Town on Saturday.

Four goals from Daniel Hegarty and one each for Josh Clack and Jake Gale helped Chi to a 6-1 win at Oaklands Park.

THat kept Chi in fourth in the SCFL Premier, level on points with Pagham who are third and one point behind Haywards Heath in second Rutherford's charges were due to be in action on Tuesday, travelling to Eastbourne Borough in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup. But other fixture commitments saw the trip to the defending champions postponed. THat game will now take place at Priory Lane on December 13 at 7.45pm.

PAGHAM chiefs have issued a rallying call as the Lions prepare for a crunch top-ofthe-table clash with Shoreham tomorrow (3pm).

Mark Bennett's side are reeling after two consecutive league losses in the SCFL Premier.

THose defeats mean Pagham are now third, eight points behind first-placed Shoreham, with the Musselmen visiting Nyetimber Lane tomorrow.

THe message from those at the club is that nothing but three points will do as THe Lions look to get their promotion ambitions back on track.

Chairman Tony Shea said: "It's a big game and we need to be at our best to get something from it."

A fortnight ago, Pagham were cruising, unbeaten in 13 and buoyed after beating Shoreham 4-2 in extra time in the Peter Bentley league cup.

But a fortnight ago, Eastbourne Town snatched a

last-second winner to condemn the Lions to a 3-2 defeat.

THat was followed up by an even-more surprising 4-2 defeat away at AFC Uckfield.

Goals from Kieron Pamment and Ryan Morey had pulled Pagham back level in the match.

But efforts from Ryan Cooper and James Feist late on meant the Lions had to make the long journey back down south with their tail between their legs.

THat defeat - which one regular described as "easily the worst performance of the season" - has seen Pagham slip to third, one point behind Haywards Heath in second.

As the club looks to put that defeat behind them this weekend, Shea said all former players at the club were welcome to Nyetimber Lane for free this weekend.

THe hope is there will be a bumper crowd to roar the Lions on to success.

But with Shoreham losing just once in the league all season, and scoring 18 in their last four, it will be a tough task.

Sids' bid for nine in a row Tim Ridgway Rugby sport@sussexpost.co.uk SIDLESHAM hope to be on Cloud Nine tomorrow as they look to keep a remarkable winning streak alive.

Daren Pearce side's 4-0 win last week against Worthing Town Leisure made it eight wins in a row for the green and golds.

It is part of an unbeaten streak which stretches back to August and puts the team in second in the SCFL Division Two. Hopes are high that the side can keep the good form going as they host Roffey at the Memorial Recreation Ground tomorrow (2pm).

It will not be easy - with Roffey being the only side to defeat Sidlesham this season.

THey will also need to counter striker Harri Nourse, who has scored 21 goals so far for the Horsham-based side.

THe confidence in the Sids' camp is sky high though - particularly after comfortably overcoming Worthing Leisure on Saturday.

With Joe Leggatt still suspended and Matt Roberts taken ill, Daren Pearce had to reshuffle their back four, welcoming back Toby Pointing and handing a debut to 17-year-old Reece Colbourne.

THe game was killed off in the second half when Dowdell finished off a lovely team move, volleying in at the far post. A late

penalty from Dan Bassil rounded off the rout and keeps Sids' second, five points behind Bosham.

Speaking after the match, Pearce said: "Worthing didn't really test our defence all afternoon with the impressive [Steve] Williams and Pointing being the rocks on which a solid foundation is built. THe win was vital as it keeps us in the pack and puts pressure on Bosham."

BOSHAM remain top of the SCFL Division Two after a remarkable 16-1 win over hapless Ferring. THe Robins have been excellent all year, winning 12 and drawing one of their 13 league games so far.

Five points clear at the top, Saturday's victory at Walton Lane has boosted the goal difference for Andy Probee's side over the 50 mark with more than half the season still to go. Marco Giambelardini came close to going home with two matchballs after netting five in the win.

Other goals were scored by Bradley Miles (3), Louis Bell (3), Ryan Coombes (2), Neil Redman, Harry Stephens and Callum Fewell.

THe only blot on the day was a consolotion effort conceeded with just ten minutes to

play. THe Robins will be hoping to continue their good form tomorrow when they travel to Brighton to play Rottingdean Village in the league (2pm).

THe hosts have had an inconsistent season so far and are without a win in four, something Probee's side will be keen to take advantage of.

THe following week Bosham take their place in the last 16 of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, hosting Westfield at Walton Lane (1.30pm).

Club officials said there was great incentive to continue progress in a competition Bosham has never won. A further home tie against either AFC Varndeanians reserves or West Sussex Premier side Lavant awaits the wnners in the quarter finals.

TOP of the table Bognor have nothing to fear as they travel to take on fellow promotion hopefuls Tonbridge Angels tomorrow (3pm).

THe Rocks went back to the top of the league in midweek after an Ollie Pearce penalty and Darren Budd strike helped them to a 2-0 victory against Kingstonian.

But the trip to Kent will not be easy - with the hosts sitting ninth albeit with up to five games in hand on those sides around them.

Rocks boss Jamie Howell said his side would need to be at their best if they are to return to Nyewood Lane with anything.

THe Rocks never really got going and could not come back after the visitors scored just before half time.

A late sending off for Calvin Davies and another goal inside stoppage time made matters worse.

Howell said "We were very poor on Saturday.

We had with a lot of injuries and a number of players out. It was just had a bad day at the office.

"I think it was as poor as I've seen us play for a long time. THat's not because the players were not trying but I think we just didn't have a good enough balance, which I have to take some blame for."

Speaking to the Post, he said: "It is always a difficult place to go but the result from midweek will give us confidence.

"THey were the early pace-setters and will be difficult to beat. It's the first of a few tough games coming up, they are coming thick and fast."

Bognor have already played Tonbridge at home this season, coming out 2-0 winners against a depleted Angels side.

Howell said: "I'm sure they will feel with a full strength side they can do well so we will have to be wary that they will want to come out and right that wrong."

Bognor did just that on Tuesday after a disappointing defeat to Hendon at home on

THe Rocks' 2-0 win in midweek against Kingstonian propelled them back to the top of the table, two points clear of Havant in second.

With other sides around them having deeper pockets and more players to pick from, it is a remarkable start to the year for a youthful and spirited Rocks side.

But with injuries and potential suspensions starting to mount up, Howell knows that a few extra numbers could make all the difference come the end of the season.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "It is difficult - I tried to bring in three players for the game against Kingstonian but unfortunately none of them came off.

"But we have Chad Field back in the squad for Saturday, and Jimmy Wild should also be

fit."

Four players will miss tomorrow's trip to Tonbridge Angels the suspended Calvin Davies and injured trio of Dan Beck, Alex Parsons (knee) and Jimmy Muitt f (hamstring).

THe good news is that Harvey Whyte is back in training and in contention for a start after returning to the bench for the defeat against Hendon.

Tommy Fraser, brother of James Fraser and University of Chichester student Ifeanyi Onwuachu also featured as substitutes in that game to give Howell options.

THe Bognor boss admitted that the return of Sami El-Abd in the heart of defence on Tuesday, along with Darren Budd after suspension, made a difference against Kingstonian.

Chi headed west having lost their last two and a little short on match practice due to bad weather.

But a hat trick for Charley Wilson-Blakely, pictured below, and one for Laura Ingram meant the green and whites returned from Bristol with all three points.

THe win returns them to the summit of the FA Women’s Premier South West One table and brings a testing November to an end on a happy note.

Chichester were very quick out of the blocks at the start of the match - and within ten minutes they were two up thanks to a powerful Ingram header and Wilson-Blakely chipping over the advancing keeper.

Not long after the half hour, they had a third with the inform double barrelled striker burying a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

She added her third late on with a well-taken volley.

Chi return to action on Sunday hosting Maidenhead at Oaklands Park (2pm).

It was a good weekend for the Ladies with the development squad winning 5-3 away to Crawley Wasps Reserves.

Two goals for Carmen Kager and one each for Jodie Pallant, Lauren Ellis and Teri Foster secured the win.

The Rocks try to break down Hendon our squad. If we can keep our squad fit and suspension free then we can do really well. But if we get a few niggles then it's difficult.

"I know that the lads all get on really well and they will all work really hard, so whatever team I put out there will fight and do well for each other.

He added: "It's a long way to go though and we are far more advanced than I thought we would be. You always want to go into Christmas in the mix, up amongst the playoff places, and we're far above that at the moment."
