Builders set to start new hospice

ST WILFRID'S bosses have taken another major step towards building a new £15million hospice in Bosham. Hospice chiefs have confirmed that they have appointed Kier Construction to carry out the construction of its new centre. Chief executive Alison Moorey, picture left with supporeter Harry Hill, said: “The Kier team has a strong track record

in delivering projects and the hospice team is very much looking forward to working with them.” Kier directorTrevor White said: “We’re delighted to have been appointed to deliver the new hospice. We look forward to working with St Wilfrid’s to deliver this high quality facility which is able to respond to the future changes of care and place the needs of staff, patients

and their families at the forefront of the design.” Three acres of vegetation and rubbish is being sorting and taken to the Woodhorn Group in Tangmere for recycling. Clearance will continue until the end of November and, providing enough money has been raised, Kier will begin construction of the new St Wilfrid’s Hospice building in July 2017.

A call for 32 schools to be built by 2020 By Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk EXTRA classrooms in new schools are required in West Sussex by 2020 as the population of schools booms, it has been claimed. That means some 32 new schools must be built in West Sussex within the next four years to accommodate the rising number of primary and secondary school pupils. Nationally, two new schools must be created every day to meet the shortfall – a new school every four hours. New research from Scape Group, which advises local authorities on new buildings, has revealed the full extent of the school building challenge in West Sussex. It believes the equivalent of 396 classrooms or 32 new schools must be built before 2020 to meet the growing numbers of primary and secondary school pupils. Nationally, local authorities are estimating there will be an additional 729,000 primary and secondary school pupils by 2020, based on Department of Education statistics. The number of primary school pupils

in England will rise 8.6 per cent by 2020, but the greatest growth will come from secondary school pupils, set to increase 12 per cent rise by 2020. The rise in pupil numbers will require many more schools to be built across the country, with a surge in primary pupils beginning to move into secondary schools. Across England, local authorities will have to find space for the equivalent of 12,209 additional primary classrooms, which equates to 1,744 single form entry primary schools. A further 12,078 secondary classrooms or 378 new secondary schools will be needed to match the rising numbers. Mark Robinson, chief executive of Scape Group, said: “The country will soon start to feel the full weight of the impending boom in pupil numbers, and we’re already seeing unprecedented pressure on school places. "A radical new wave of school-building is essential and must be a top priority for government. As the growth of the primary school population gathers pace, the pressure on school places will soon transfer to the secondary population, requiring a new wave of advanced school building."

He's stork of the town! Mail boss Kalpesh delivers film prize By Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk MAIL maestro Kalpesh Chudasama knows what he is storking about. For the Chichester businessman has teamed up with the makers of a Hollywood blockbuster to bring a touch of Tinseltown to his city shop. Kalpesh, who owns the Mail Boxes Etc. store in The Hornet, is using bird-power to deliver a super competition prize. It's all to do with a tie-in with the animated characters from Warner Bros.’ new film, Storks, which opens today. He said: “The storks are now nesting in the windows of our store in the form of life-size character cut-outs. We’re celebrating with a prize draw to win a family trip to Barcelona, complete with

a helicopter tour for a stork’s-eye view of the city, and giving away free movie posters to celebrate the movie launch.” Mail Boxes Etc. specialises in parcel delivery and now, in the film, so do storks. And when Warner Bros. looked for a retailer to help spread the word the company seemed the ideal choice. “We’re so excited to be collaborating with one of the big Hollywood studios to promote their main animation adventure release of the year,” added Kalpesh. “Everyone who sends a parcel with us in-store during October can enter, and there’s no limit to the number of entries, as long as you’ve shipped a package with us in each case. And 50 runners-up will receive a pair of cinema tickets. Plus everyone who sends a parcel with us will get a pack of Storks pairs cards."

Screening of WW1 film free at library THE centenary of the Battle of the Somme is to be commemorated at Chichester Library with a free cinema show. West Sussex County Council is staging the event next month with an original, full-length film shot during the World War 1 battle. The film, made in 1916 and shown courtesy of the Imperial War Museums, will be screened on 10 November at 7.30pm. Admission is by ticket which can be reserved on 01243 777351. This year, Imperial War Museums (IWM) and West Sussex Libraries are working together to show the UNESCO listed film The Battle of the Somme to audiences across the world. It was the first feature length war documentary and changed the way both cinema and film was perceived by the public. In the year of its release 20 million people, half the population at the time, watched the film, many hoping to see the image of a loved-one, or friend. This unique film has a new score by Laura Rossi, which was commissioned to mark the 90th anniversary of the film. For more information go to www.1914.org

TALK to Michael Maskell about insurance and within the merest hint of time you’ll realise just why business is booming for Worrell Fry and Co Limited.

The company, which prides itself on being innovative and excelling in identifying insurance solutions for both individuals and companies, takes time to identify specific requirements and make recommendations that offer wide ranging cover at competitive premiums. Manager Michael explains: “Along with this modern approach to insurance systems we still maintain traditional values of professionalism and service which endorses our status of being a trusted insurance broker in Sussex, Hampshire and farther afield.” The company insists on a personal touch when it comes to acting on behalf of their clients and in an era when it’s all the rage to go online and start

TANGMERE Solar Farm has generated enough clean electricity to power 1,500 homes for an entire year — just one year since it opened. It is one of the country’s first councilowned solar farms and is built on 29 acres of land owned by West Sussex County Council on part of the site of the former Tangmere Airfield. The facility officially opened in October 2015 and, over the past 12 months, the 18,000 solar panels have generated almost 5,000 MWh of clean electricity. The good weather during the late spring and early summer produced the best output with 721 MWh being generated in May alone — this is the equivalent of energy generated by burning almost 100 tonnes of coal. Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “This is the very first part of what is an exciting ongoing project that can produce clean, efficient energy harnessing nature’s resource. “I was at Tangmere Solar Farm when it opened and our ambition was for the solar farm to be an innovative way to help the local economy, environment as well as producing our own energy. So I am delighted to say that we have achieved this. “Local companies and suppliers were

used in building the solar farm that has started our journey to becoming less reliant on fossil fuels.” The solar farm was built by Your Energy Sussex — a County Council-led partnership with local councils and construction company Carillion that works with residents and businesses to save energy, reduce their bills and generate renewable energy. Electricity from Tangmere Solar Farm is fed into the National Grid, earning a year-on-year income for the council through the Government’s feed-in-tariff scheme. Over its 25 years life span Tangmere will generate £13.8 million and pay back the cost of the project in less than ten years. Goldsmith added: “On top of all the initial benefits, there are extra gains for our buildings as they can be powered by the clean energy from Tangmere, for example libraries, offices, and children and family centres. “We are now really looking forward to the future with a new energy strategy and sustainable energy plans up until 2020. " This includes work to scope out what other possibilities there are in West Sussex including a second solar farm which we are currently exploring in Westhampnett.” For more information on the 2016 to 2020 Energy Strategy, visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/energystrategy.

AN IMAGE of two people wanted in connection with the alleged theft of a purse at a supermarket has been released by police. The incident happened at around 4.40pm on Tuesday, October 4 at the Waitrose store in Via Ravenna, Chichester. A 57-year-old woman realised her purse had been stolen from her handbag which was attached to her trolley. CCTV footage from the store appears to show a man and a woman follow the victim around the store. When she is not looking, the woman snatches her purse and hides it under a loaf of bread she is holding. The purse contained approximately £30 in cash, as well the victim’s driving licence

and her recently obtained driving instructor licence. The female suspect is described as a white woman of slim build and shoulder length brown hair, wearing a knee-length white jacket and light coloured jeans. The male suspect is described as a white man of medium build and mostly bald with hair at the sides and back. He was wearing an open khaki jacket over a black top, and light coloured jeans. Anyone who recognises either of the suspects is asked to contact 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 1103 of 04/10. FANS of Major Tim Peake will be disappointed to learn that Chichester's very own space hero probably won't be landing for an official welcome home parade in the city any time soon. The astronaut, 44, has embarked on a tour of the UK as the year comes to a close and he will get as close as Portsmouth. But plans have yet to get off the ground for him to collect the freedom of the city accolade bestowed upon him following his historic six-month stint in space. Peake became the first Briton to serve a mission as an International Space Station astronaut and returned to Earth in June to great acclaim. But his busy schedule doesn't appear to have time for an official visit to the city despite the Novium Museum preparing to celebrate the former Chichester High School pupil's adventure in the form of an exhibition, which has been partly co-ordinated by his dad, Nigel. The exhibition will open on December 15 – anniversary of thelaunch into space. Enthusiast Daniel Griffiths said it was a shame the city had to wait to see their homecoming hero, but he understood he had a lot of demands on his time. He added: "We rightly handed Tim the freedom of the city and I thought that plans for him to come back to a hero's welcome were well under way. But it

seems time is dragging and it's a shame but it just proves how popular one of the city's new favourite sons has become." Chichester town clerk Rodney Duggua confirmed that following the publication of Peake’s UK tour programme in last week’s edition of the Chichester Post, he was contacting the European Space Agency to see if they were yet able to confirm likely dates for a Freedom of the City of Chichester award ceremony and post-event "freedom parade" to take place. He said that this "would be a significant event for the city and that a comprehensive event management plan would need to be prepared and approved by a number of agencies coordinated through the Chichester Safety Advisory Group". Peake's post-flight tour dates saw him at Cardiff yesterday and he will be in Leicester today. He is in Manchester tomorrow and then: Glasgow, October 16; Edinburgh, Oct 17; Belfast Oct 18 and London on Oct 19. And he is attending the prestigious UK Space Agency Principia mission conference at the University of Portsmouth on November 2. Of the reception he has received since his return, he said: “I’ve been extremely touched by the support of the British public before, during and after my mission to the ISS and I hope that my post-flight tour will allow me to thank as many of those people as possible."

James is law firm's new recruit CHICHESTER law firm George Ide LLP has appointed medical claims specialist James Hawke to lead its clinical negligence department. Father-of-two James joins the firm with two decades of personal injury experience under his belt. He said: “Ever since starting out as a solicitor I've been fascinated by the crossover between medicine and law. When someone is injured in a setting of trust such as a hospital, under the care of specialist doctors, they are especially vulnerable. “They have put their lives in someone else’s hands. If they are then let down by the very medical professionals they trusted so completely, it can be devastating."

Post CHICHESTER folk are invited to a Save the Childen gift fair. Churchers College in Petersfield will stage the two-day event. A selection of stalls will sell jewellery, homeware and decorative items, luxury fashion goods, toys and art ware. The fair will be open on Friday, 28th October 11am-5 pm and Saturday, 29 October 10am-4pm.

Star of stage and screen, Danny is best known for his portrayal of Mark “Dodger” Savage in the Channel 4 soap opera, Hollyoaks. But for the staff and volunteers of St Wilfrid‘s Hospice, Danny is also fondly known as one of its dedicated patrons. Danny has been a hospice patron since 2013 and his mum, Jan Greene, is deputy ward sister on the inpatient unit. And St Wilfrid’s Hospice team

members say they were "absolutely thrilled" to learn that Danny was going to be a contestant in the 14th series of the hugely popular BBC TV show. And his first dance caused great celebration amongst patients, family members and staff. As staff nurse, Sara Waters, said she was very emotional after watching the show. She added: “I cried after his performance; I have known Danny since he was a little boy and to see him perform so brilliantly on Strictly was such a proud moment.” Danny made a great start in week one with partner, Oti Mabuse, and danced a

very hot and steamy cha cha. This was followed by a show-stopping Viennese Waltz to INXS "Never Tear Us Apart" in week two, finishing in joint first place with Louise Redknapp. A spokeswoman said: “The St Wilfrid’s Hospice team is supporting Danny all the way to the final. "We do hope that everyone in the local area will get behind him so that he can come and dance for the patients in the day hospice and show off the coveted Strictly Glitterball trophy! “Please join us in supporting Danny and wishing him continuing luck in his Strictly adventures.” St Wilfrid’s

Ken at festival

GUEST COLUMNIST: Dan Jones

FORMER Mayor of London Ken Livingstone was in the city last weekend to deliver a talk at the popular Chichester Autumn Speakers Festival. The politician was speaking about his book, Ken Livingstone - Being Red: A Politics for the Future at The Assembly Rooms on Saturday. His book focuses on the future of the labour party and the impact of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. Livingstone was mayor of London for eight years from 2000 until 2008. Other speakers promoting their books included former England cricket player Jonathan Trott (Unguarded: My Autobiography), Tom Bower (Broken Vows: Tony Blair – The Tragedy of Power), and Peter Snowdon (Cameron at 10 - The Verdict).

IT’S party time for followers of fashion who are dedicated to ethical and social responsibility. For Tuppenny Barn at Southbourne will be transformed into a fun and festive fashion boutique with music and lights forming the backdrop to models on a catwalk. But the assortment of party frocks and outfits will feature only ethical and sustainable clothing. The aim is to present and promote alternative ways to shop for clothing including buying pre-loved, upcycled and vintage, as well as outfits, accessories and beauty products. “Ethical and sustainable fashion is a perfect fit with our ethos at Tuppenny Barn in that every decision we make as a consumer has an impact on the world’s natural resources and environment,” said manager Emma Crane-Robinson. “We need to make a change and become more aware, more conscious

consumers.” The catwalk will be used to showcase brands such as People Tree, Earthmonk, St Wilfred’s Hospice Vintage and Retro Shop, My Sister’s House and the M&S Fairtrade and organic range. And that special outfit can have sustainable finishing touches such as hair and make-up products by organic brands Harmonic and Tropic Skin care. Other stalls include Swap Shop (Transition Chichester), Clothkits, Julianna Heale, Janice’s Pre-Loved, Global SeaSaw and Daisy Rock Vintage Wares. The compere will be Naomi Thompson, whose love of alternative, thrift and secondhand clothing has led to her prominence as a blogger and writer. She will also be showing a collection of rare American vintage and retro jewellery from the 1920s to the 1940s. Tickets for the November 11 event are £10 from www.tuppennybarn.co.uk or participating shops.

HAVING a social-emotional difficulty doesn’t mean you can’t achieve things. I have Asperger’s, a highfunctioning form of autism. I have faced discrimination for being different, I often struggle to fit in when I’m in social situations, yet I have made a career working in the caring profession, and have found ways to put my way of perceiving the world to good use. I have even written a book about my experiences with Asperger’s – ‘Look into My Eyes: Asperger’s, Hypnosis, and Me’. As a child I discovered meditation – I didn’t know it was meditation at the time. I used to escape the chaos of home-life by going into woodland, climbing a tree, and sitting with my eyes closed just listening. I focused on breathing slowly and calmly, and imagined the external world inside my mind. Whenever I heard a bird sing, or the sound of rustling leaves I would imagine where that sound was coming from. Doing this helped me to learn to focus my attention on one thing while shutting everything else out which became a valuable skill as I grew up. When I was a teenager I saw Paul McKenna on TV doing his stage show. I was instantly hooked, I had to learn how to do hypnosis. I thought it would be a quick and easy way to make the world around me more predictable – I

could just click my fingers, tell people what I want them to do and how I want them to behave, and they would obey me just like the hypnotised people on TV. The reality turned out differently. As I learnt about hypnosis I realised my beliefs about it were totally wrong, you can’t use hypnosis to make people obey your every command, hypnosis is about observation skills, and helping people to become absorbed in one version of reality. I had never thought about people having meaningful facial expressions or behaviours before, learning hypnosis improved my ability to understand and interact with others. I am good at noticing patterns, and I rarely get drawn in to other people’s emotions, these two traits, and what I learnt from studying hypnosis and meditation helped me to work in care settings; from working with people with mental health issues, to youngsters with challenging behaviour. And over the last decade working with families, because I can recognise what patterns are playing out without getting drawn into the emotional content, which allows me to see what and where change needs to happen. Dan Jones will be giving a free talk about Asperger’s at Chichester Library: 12.10pm, Thursday 27th October. Go to www.DanJonesHypnosis.com

Sarah set for a chain reaction HOW to expand cycling more widely particularly to women and children was one of the topics at a meeting in Chichester. It came as experienced cycle infrastructure professionals took part in a two-day workshop. They addressed councillors and campaigners to parish councillors on matters such as roundabout and junction design. Organsier Sarah Sharp said: “We hope this will be the start of a more thoughtful approach to cycling and walking infrastructure. There is a danger that West Sussex will end up with dated infrastructure when, with a bit more thought, something far more usable can be achieved.”

6,000 visitors flock to enjoy autumn fun at country show By Robert Henry news@sussexpost.co.uk TRADITIONAL country activities were on show to around 6,000 visitors at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum's Autumn Countryside Show last weekend. Attractions to help celebrate the arrival of autumn at the Singleton venue included all things countryside from traditional bell-jingling Morris dancers strutting their stuff to the chance to experience the sublime skills

on show from wood-turning experts' demonstrations. Visitors admired scenes from yesteryear such as horses ploughing fields, and operators of tractors and steam engines proving their prowess. And there was the chance to witness the grace and guile involved in the ancient art of falconry, as well as dog agility demonstrations. The museum's Martin Purslow said: "There were more than 100 craft stalls and lots of locally produced, locally made food stuffs in what was very much a West Sussex focused event. "It was a very traditional celebration of autumn and all things to do with the harvest."

Heart-stopping horrors wanted for monster prizes

MONSTER prizes are available for Halloween from a Bognor Regis store. Gift vouchers worth a spine-chilling £500 can be won from Squires Model and Craft Tools. And winning the Halloween Craft Bonanza from Squires couldn't be simpler. Entries can be any handmade scary item linked to Halloween -witches' hats, monsters, ghouls, papier mache pumpkins and masks. One lucky hopeful will collect the £250 first prize for frightening the judges the most. Further prizes of £150 and £100 will be available to those whose horror handy work also impresses the judges. The deadline for the competition is October 31, of course, and entries must be taken into Squires at 100 London Road, Bognor Regis, PO21 1DD, before then. Squires' owner Roger Lewis is staging the competition to provide some friendly fun at the scariest time of year. He said: "Don't be frightened to enter our first Halloween competition. "Ghost written entries will not be allowed but I hope as many people as possible take part to celebrate Halloween and the new life for Squires. "We have plenty of stock which will bring a smile to the face of everyone thinking about a special occasion for

Halloween. "People might not think that they have a ghost of a chance but I hope they enter and also take the opportunity to see what we can offer them. "We are a one-stock craft shop and our customers can find plenty of goods for whatever they are planning for

Halloween. "Whether it's making a witch's hat, conjuring up a ghostly presence or becoming a vampire, we will have what you want at prices which won't frighten your budget." The company's premises in London Road are being revamped by Mr Lewis to create space for 50,000 products compared to the present 20,000 - to provide even more choice to meet every arts and crafts need. His re-launch of a company he began in September 1992 comes as a sign of his renewed belief in his future. The positive feedback from his customers has encouraged him to take on more stock to ensure he has all the essentials

needed for art and needlework. This expansion has been supported by a steady stream of customers and has given Mr Lewis the confidence to plan the latest growth in his business. The result will be a 6,500 square foot creative paradise to delight anyone who wants to be inspired to pick up a needle, do some crocheting or create a painting. The work's first phase will involve a needlecraft and haberdashery section being installed at the front of the shop. There will also be an expanded range of Daler-Rowney and Windsor and Newton artistic material as well as paper and calligraphy supplies. Eye-catchingly coloured wools will be stocked as well alongside fleece straight off the sheep. Railway modellers will also find plenty to keep themselves busy with their favourite hobby, while an extensive tool range will provide the means for all art and craft enthusiasts to start their latest projects. In the meantime, the Squires Halloween competition gives them plenty to get their teeth into. The judges will be Bognor Regis Post representatives. As Mr Lewis said: "Don't be spooked. Enter our competition before October 31 to have the chance to win our fabulous gift vouchers. It could be a case of fangs for the memory for the lucky winner!"

Business whizzes bid to help 'start-ups' for just £1 a day YOUNGSTERS uncertain of which career path to follow after education are being urged to “take on the world” on their own by a Chichester company. Thomas Nicholls, 25, and Tom Simmonds, 23, are the brains behind a new initiative to help start-up businesses. The duo have revealed how they plan to help would-be entrepreneurs attain a global reach at the touch of a keyboard. And their company, the 180 Group, have launched a project to give new businesses a foot on the ladder for just £1 a day. The business partners have drawn on their own experiences and say they know how difficult youngsters think it can be to turn an idea into a viable concern. Thomas said: "We've been there and we are sure we can help those out of college or university to do their own thing. "We used our life passions to start our company and we can help new businesses take on the world. We help promote, celebrate and accelerate small businesses. We believe we can provide the perfect platform to enhance business through social media, website design, advertising, marketing, networking and business consultancy and much more" The firm's initiative, named StartEnergy180, will run until the end of the year. "We've had help along the way and we want to give something back, nd this project can do that," added Tom. More info: www.180group.co.uk or call 0800 6349 180.

Top cows milk the applause BRINSBURY’S dairy cows continue to reap rewards at shows. Two of the cows from the Chichester College farm at Brinsbury placed highly at the Dairy Show at the Bath and West show ground, Shepton Mallet. Finsbury Gentle 3 came first in the Senior Cow in Milk category, while Brinsbury Gwynne 12 came first in the Heifer in Milk category. Both cows went on to compete in the dairy shorthand championship, with Gentle being made champion. Dan Stamper, farm manager, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for the college and we’re really pleased to see our herd doing so well in competitions."

Free cathedral concert hits the right note as fundraiser

Ofsted inspection result sparks celebration for Portfield school

TUNE up for a classical concert that will provide music to the ears of fundraisers keen to help maintain Chichester Cathedral. Shoppers, tourists and residents have been

invited to attend an informal concert given by the city’s home-grown symphony orchestras later this month in aid of the cathedral restoration fund. Free to attend, the Chichester Symphony Orchestra event is part of a lunchtime concert series held in the cathedral’s spectacular

medieval nave during which members of the public are encouraged to come and go as they please to enjoy a variety of musical programmes. Funds raised through a retiring collection are donated to the trust that provides for the restoration and upkeep of the cathedral. West Sussex personal injury lawyer and the Chichester Symphony Orchestra’s lead second violinist Claire Watson, who is a partner at George Ide LLP, is looking forward to this year’s performance that will see guest conductor Josep Gil at the helm. Claire said: “These lunchtime concerts are always very special as the relaxed and informal atmosphere really brings out the players’ passion for the music they’re performing. It’s a joy to be able to give a concert in such a wonderful setting and we hope to raise much-needed funds to help the cathedral charity. “Playing in these surroundings to an informal gathering that hopefully will include children on their half-term holidays is a real opportunity for us to introduce classical music to a wider audience, some of whom may not previously have heard such pieces performed live. Hopefully we can impart some of our enthusiasm. Chichester Symphony Orchestra’s lunchtime cathedral concert will take place at 1.10pm on Tuesday 25 October and will feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 (the socalled ‘London’ symphony) and Beethoven’s Creatures of Prometheus overture. Entry is free and there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Chichester cathedral fund.

New college hub held to account A NEW hub has been opened at Chichester College to meet a growing demand for accounting technicians – one of the first of its kind in the UK. The hub features a suite of rooms dedicated to provision for AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) courses. The hub was opened by Kelly Huntington, Regional Account Manager for AAT. Principal Shelagh Legrave OBE, said: “We are delighted to be one of the first colleges in the country to have a dedicated AAT hub. “We are constantly looking to ensure our students receive the best education possible – that includes meeting, and exceeding, industry standards in all areas. “We believe this new facility will help us to achieve that goal.” The college is currently running

a full complement of courses introductory to professional qualifications, with daytime and evening classes. Kelly added: “This is a landmark moment for AAT, and will strengthen our existing ties with Chichester College. We are sure the hub will prove a successful resource for students, and we applaud the college on their pioneering approach to learning.” The hub opening was followed by a graduation ceremony, celebrating the achievements of 22 graduates studying various subjects at the college’s business school including AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting, CIPD Level 5 Diploma in Human Resource Management and CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing.

PUPILS and staff at a Chichester school are celebrating after getting their best ever Ofsted result. Portfield Primary Academy in St James Road has been graded good across the board in its latest inspection. That's up from its previous rating of requires improvement in 2014. Inspectors said school leaders have halted a decline in English and maths and teachers have a much higher expectation of pupils’ learning and behaviour than in the previous inspection. Significant improvements in teaching have lifted pupils’ outcomes in all stages and leaders have taken swift action to improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment during the past year. They also said that pupils behave well and get on well together. They are keen to learn, polite and caring. Executive headteacher James Munt said: “It was great for the school. It’s the first time the school has ever been graded good. There’s a real feeling of celebration. “The staff were over the moon about it. A lot of them have been there for years and have invested a lot of time and effort into the school. “We were really pleased for the whole school community. This school has a real community feel about it.” Mr Munt said there were several things which stood out in the report. “It’s nice

that they recognised the impact that the leadership has had,” he added. “It said that morale was high in the school which was nice. Every member of staff said that they were proud to work there. “The children said that they enjoyed working there and that learning is fun. “In last year’s results a lot of schools struggled but we did really well.” Inspectors said in order for the school to become outstanding, teachers need to respond more effectively to pupils’ needs during lessons and absence and fixed term exclusion rates need to be reduced. Communication with parents needs to be improved so that they are well informed about the school’s progress. Mr Munt added that those improvements were already in place. “We knew we had to improve on those things,” he said. “We are confident going forward. We want to spend time consolidating the good and making sure everything is at that standard. “Sometimes schools can have a dip after Ofsted. After Christmas we will put in place our good to outstanding plan. “More and more children are coming to the school. There are already another 25 children in the school — it’s becoming more and more popular. "It gives a bit of breathing space to think outside the box a bit more." The school appointed Andrew Strong as overall headteacher for the school from September.

Joint bid to hit the scammers WEST Sussex Trading Standards have joined forces as part of a nationwide bid to protect people from scams. Friends Against Scams has been set up by the National Trading Standards Scams Team. Spokesman Richard Sargeant said: “We are always looking for ways to protect people from scammers. Scams affect a significant number of people and often those who are lonely or isolated, and this scheme should help to stop this.” David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Our team do an excellent job helping to protect people and we are always looking for further ways to help.”

Post GEEK Week returns for its second year in libraries across the county from October 28 to November 5. Events see activities celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths, books and reading. And on November 3 a popular culture quiz for teams up to six is at Chichester library from 7.30pm. Tickets £4 from the library.

f A happy walk in the countryside, but perils lurk

DOG owners are being urged to keep a watchful eye on their pets in case a hidden killer disease strikes. The warning comes after a rise in the number of lungworm cases in the West Sussex countryside. There have been 952 cases reported countrywide and 81 deaths from the disease, which is caused by a parasite on snails and slugs. Vets are now offering advice to dog owners on how to best keep their dogs safe and protected from the parasite. Worried owner Jenny Moore, who walks her pooch Frankie in the Chichester countryside, says she will heed the warning and already keeps an eye out for Alabama Rot. She said: "The cause of Alabama Rot, clinically known as idiopathic cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV), is still unknown and there is no known way to prevent a dog from contracting the disease. "But I ensure that I wash down Frankie's legs after muddy walks and keep and eye on his limbs for lesions which are caused by this deadly fungal infection. Now ewe have lungworm to watch out for, too." Dr Huw Stacey, director of clinical service at Vets4Pets, said: “The distribution and risk of lungworm in the UK has increased since it was first detected in the 1970s and has grown

even more in the past few years. “The lungworm parasite uses different animals to complete its lifecycle. "Dogs and foxes are usually the primary hosts, whilst slugs and snails act as an intermediate host. And it’s at this time of year (autumn) when dogs have a greater chance of encountering slugs and snails on a morning or evening walk, or even in the garden. "The lifecycle of lungworm begins when larvae produced by adult lungworms inside dogs or foxes, are passed through their faeces and then transferred to slugs and snails who feed upon the excrement. “Dogs love to roam around and explore the outdoors, so can easily come into contact with the infected slugs and snails, and either accidentally or deliberately eat the molluscs or ingest their slime. “If this happens, the larvae are absorbed in the dog’s gut and develop into adults which live between the heart and lungs, until they are coughed up and swallowed, then the cycle begins again.” Signs that a dog is infected by the lungworm parasite can include coughing, breathlessness, weight loss, reduced appetite, diarrhoea and in more severe cases, fits, impaired blood clotting and haemorrhage. Dr Stacey added: “These signs are not a sure guarantee of lungworm, so if your dog is displaying any of these symptoms, it is essential to take them into your local vet so further tests can be done to reach a diagnosis.”

West Sussex tourist attraction Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green is getting ready for a week of ‘fangtastic’ fun and games this October half term. Fishers will be launching their very own live Halloween production next week (22nd October onwards) entitled...‘The Story of Mervin The Monster’. An original script following the tale of a loveable Monster and his wicked Father, who falls in love with a kindly witch, and spends his whole life dreaming of becoming a dancer! The show could almost be likened to the well-loved story of Billy Elliott with a spooky twist. It will take place in the farm park’s 200-seater theatre, where the popular annual Pantomimes also are performed. The park welcomed over 7000 visitors last Halloween season, this year is set to be even more successful, with the launch of the ‘Gory-ent Express’ Train Ride Featuring real-life actors and special effects – a ride for all the family. Katie Marsh from Alfold, a regular visitor to the farm, commented: “We love Halloween at Fishers! We’re really intrigued to see the new show... my daughter Jessica’s favourite is always the Gory-ent Express though!”

DENMANS

GARDEN

Tucked away, far from the hustle and bustle of the A27, just behind Fontwell Racecourse is a quiet gem of a garden. Denmans was the garden to a minor stately home built about 1820 for Lord Denman, so there is, of course, a walled garden, and a conservatory – alive with the chatter of budgerigars, and a larger area for frost tender plants; at the bottom of the garden there is a large natural looking pond. The garden at Denmans is nearly 4 acres in size and its layout is such that visitors enjoy lots of quiet, small areas within the overall, for it is punctuated with statues, a nice pot or a warm sitting corner. It is a garden full of ideas to take home that can then be interpreted within smaller spaces. There is something about this garden, which is quite unlike many others. Its display is not only to do with flower colour, but foliage form, texture and the use of gravel lending the garden a Mediterranean feel.

A visit to Denmans Garden is more than just a delightful stroll around one of the foremost twentieth century gardens. There is also the multi award winning

and fully licensed Garden Café which serves a selection of breakfasts, lunches, coffees, teas and a variety of delicious cakes. With seating either al fresco or inside in the beautiful covered terrace area, with the gentle strains of classical music in the background the café is the perfect stop for coffee, a piece of cake or lunch. There are also a variety of gifts available in the beautiful gift shop. No visit is complete without spending time in our beautiful Plant Centre. Stocked with a good variety of perennials and shrubs to tempt you at very reasonable prices. Our staff are always on hand to give advice.

Denmans is open daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm from March until September and closed Monday’s and Tuesday’s from October to February, we are also closed for a few days at Christmas. We are available for coach and group bookings at reduced prices. Season tickets are available allowing unlimited visits to Denmans for one year and giving a discount on plants at the plant centre.

well up for the challenge, and decided to go ahead with his meaty choices regardless. My prawn cocktail arrived beautifully presented as a generous roundel of succulent prawns in a luscious baby pink Marie Rose sauce, nestled on a bed of fresh salad leaves and tomatoes, accompanied by brown bread and a pot of creamy butter. It was a classic dish done well. My companion was equally delighted with his pile of crispy chilli beef – delicate tender strips of beef in a crunchy, light batter coating with a hint of chilli sauce, served with a salad garnish. Enjoyable though our starters were, we were glad to have left room for the gastronomic delight that was the main course. My vegetarian dish was so delicious that even I could have been converted to becoming a non meat-eater. e dish is described as ‘roasted red pepper, courgette and warm new potato salad, served with halloumi chips.’ e roasted pepper, chargrilled and sweet was served on a bed of rocket, fresh tomato, red onion, and honey and mustard dressing, which complemented it perfectly. I had never had halloumi chips before, and the strips of cheese coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried, absolutely did not disappoint.

dish I will try out on with the barbecue this summer. My fellow diners’ Barbeque Glazed Pork Ribs arrived as promised, a huge plate of glossy brown ribs doused in a deep rich sweet smoky barbecue sauce and served on a bed of fresh salad leaves with a piquant dressing, and a side of homemade fat chunky chips, and what he described as the ‘best coleslaw’ he had tasted in a very long time. We skipped the homemade dessert on this occasion, but that will be an excuse to return in the very near future – as if we needed one. We dined al fresco, but whilst there we had a look around the interior of the restaurant. It has recently undergone some refurbishment and the result is a very light and welcoming venue, simple but stylishly rustic. e owners Dave and Teresa West have been for bed and breakfast as well as the restaurant and bar, with Full English Breakfast. Ideal for a quiet lazy afternoon lunch, it was also easy to see how the main restaurant would be an exciting and vibrant night time place to eat with friends or family too. Price-wise, starters begin at £6 to £10.50 for the Boxed Camembert which is recommended for sharing. Think pink, so says Jan! Visit the Royal Oak, aka the Pink Pub, in the heart of North Bersted JAN Cattermole doesn’t mind admitting that she has both feet firmly in the past when it comes to being the landlady of the Royal Oak – better known as the Pink Pub. For Jan takes great pride in being at the helm of what she describes as “one of the last remaining traditional pubs” in our area. THat said, Jan and her friendly staff are very much immersed in the modern era when it comes to plaudits. THey have just been awarded a certificate of merit from the wise folk at Tripadvisor for the second year on the bounce so they are obviously doing something right. Tripadvisor is the biggest travel website in the world with more than 200 million unbiased reviews, so the merit is certainly one worth having. Jan says: "It was lovely to receive the recognition last time of asking and to get it for the second year is certainly something of which we are very proud. And I think we have every right to be. "What makes it such a significant award is that it is totally independent and there is no gloss on any of the reviews. "In my book that makes it worth having and, by the same token, I recognise the authenticity of the reviews on Tripadvisor, too. THey have independent integrity and

there is no puff, no flim-flam, it is all about the experience the customers had, be that an enjoyable experience or otherwise." THe rave reviews are thoroughly deserved, of course, but quite what aspect of the pub’s service is its best attribute is a matter of opinion. THe Pink Pub is very well known for helping various charity efforts, chief among these is the Pink Pub to Paris charity bike ride last year – which saw madcap Bognor cyclists dressed as superheroes pedal to Paris on a £25 bike – that raised a staggering figure. After the dust had settled, the saddlesoreness worn off and the adding up had been done, the huge effort had raised more than £100,000. Jan admits: “It was a tremendous effort from everyone involved, especially the chaps who did all the cycling, and we were proud to play our part. "We are known as a charity pub and we do our best to help out where we can. We support Snowdrop, St Wilfrid’s and Chestnut Tree House. “After the Paris trip we have become known more and more as the charity pub. We do have a sense of community and try to look after our customers.” As well as a decent pint, or whatever your

tipple happens to be, you can dine at the pub and it boasts an extensive menu and very competitive prices – and it is certainly worth making a booking. THere is a convivial atmopshere and, together with friendly, polite and punctual service, it is a dining experience you are bound to relish. Jan adds: “We are serve food from 12 until 6 Monday to Saturday, and then on a Sunday we serve roast dinners 12 to 2.30 and all of the dishes seem to prove popular.” Choose from starters including homemade soup of the day, sautéed garlic mushrooms, prawn cocktail, paté with toast, or garlic bread. A wide selection of jacket potatoes and baguettes with various tasty fillings is also available. When it comes to main meals, the Pink Pub has a mouth-watering choice. If you can get past the all-day breakfast option, that is. Delicious! You can choose from grilled sirloin steak, piri piri chicken breast, grilled salmon fillet, pan fried lamb’s liver, breaded plaice or battered cod. THen there is breaded wholetail scampi, lasagne, a three-egg omelette or steak and kidney pudding. It makes you hungry just

reading the list, doesn't it? All of these mouth-watering meals can be served along with vegetables, salad, chips, potatoes and mushrooms. THere is also a board which details the day’s hugely anticipated specials from which you can select your option. Yes, you certainly are spoiled for choice when it comes to eating here. Set foot in the Pink Pub and you’ll know exactly what Jan means by “traditional” and the pub retains two bars, a throwback to when all pubs had a public bar and a saloon bar and a welcome one at that. Jan admits that running the Pink Pub in a manner akin to managing a public house of yesteryear does have its drawbacks., however small they may be. She added: “We have memorabilia all over the place as you can imagine in a traditional pub and we like it that way and so do our customers. "But to be perfectly honest with you all the the polishing and cleaning of these artfecats, however interesting they may be, can be a real pain!” For more information about the Royal Oak, you can email Jan at jan@thepinkpub.co.uk, or 01243 821002 call to make a booking or for other enquiries.

Majestic 'buy six' offer has a lot of bottle... f QUICK CROSSWORD f QUICK CROSSWORD 1

Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys AS you have undoubtedly devined, my wine journey this week transported me to the delights of Majestic Wines, Chichester, a veritable cornucopia of wines to explore. Free tasting of certain wines is an added bonus of shopping at Majestic along with the knowledgeable staff, but you still need to buy any six bottles to achieve the maximum discount! My first selection was a Seppelt Heritage 2013 Chardonnay Semillon discounted currently to an attractive £4.99 . This wine is clean on the palate, is soft and fragrant and pleasingly delicate for an Aussie white with a cream soda taste on the finish. It has the melon character of Chardonnay and the creamier, citrussy taste of Semillon and I commend it to you while stocks last. Remaining in the Antipodes I next espied a 2015 Sauvignon Blanc aptly entitled The King's Favour from the much-vaunted Marlborough region of New Zealand. Wow - this wine was stunning and was one of the wines available to taste. The winemaker Brent Marris descends from the noble De

at a discounted price of £5.99. This wine is currently good value for money and has blackberry and black currant fruit flavours and a hint of sweet spice. The next red to attract my attention was a 2013 Cotes Du Rhone VidalFleury which had bramble fruits in abundance and heady spice and at the current reduced price of £7.99 is very competitive and worth a punt! I could not then resist a return tasting of

a red Passimento priced at £8.99, hailing from the practice of appassimento which involves the grapes losing about thirty per cent of their water content and thus concentrating the juice and intensifying the wine's flavour. This wine with its hints of leather and spice and strong tannins is a wine worth exploring. The next red was recommended to me by a fellow client and failed to disappoint! The Surani Costarossa Primitivo Di

17

Manduria 2015 had a velvety texture with a subtle smokiness and featured intense rich black fruit and concentrated dark chocolate and at £8.99 is a wine for a dark winter night! Upping the price range wine guru Ben 20 recommended a Valpolicella La Casetta 2013 Valpolicella Ripasso which for the sum of £13 49 proved to be very smooth and rounded, intense in flavour with vanilla to the fore. 22

METHOD 1. In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook penne according to package directions until al dente. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup pasta water, and return to pot. 2. Meanwhile, make pesto: In the bowl of a food processor, combine roasted red peppers and 1/3 cup olive oil and pulse until combined. Add Parmesan, almonds, half the garlic, and salt and blend until combined.

3. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat remaining tablespoon of oil. Add remaining garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute, then add spinach and toss until just wilted, 2 minutes. Season with salt. 4. Add cooked penne and pesto to skillet and toss until combined. Add pasta water and stir until creamy. Top with Parm and season with pepper.

Community Community News News & Views & Views My Sisters' House WELCOME to our latest column provided by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre. These columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help. It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

I’M going for a less known plug this week - Lupus– heard of it? It is Lupus Awareness Month - It takes place during October in the UK every year. It is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the disease among the public and medical profession as well as improving the understanding of the impact that lupus can have. By making people more aware of lupus you can help control its impact. So do you know what it is? It's an incurable immune system illness, probably genetic in origin and mainly suffered by females. It can affect any part of the body and that's the danger. Lupus can produce many symptoms. Family doctors often fail to recognise it. Meanwhile, a number of major organs can be damaged in an irreversible way. In lupus the immune system produces far too many antibodies which, circulating through the bloodstream, cause reactions leading to inflammatory processes anywhere in the body. The two major symptoms are joint and muscle pain and an extreme tiredness that won't go away no matter how much you rest. Rashes, depression, anaemia, feverishness, headaches, possible hair loss and mouth ulcers may all be part of the pattern of lupus. Noticeably, while the two major symptoms are invariably present, people with lupus can differ greatly in their symptoms and how the illness can affect them - life-threatening for a few, very mild for some. Miscarriage, often recurrent, is another unhappy complication of lupus. Women are the principal sufferers. The main trigger of lupus is hormonal activity and change, and lupus can often trigger after childbirth, at the menopause or during puberty and usually between the ages of 15 and 55. A number of illnesses arise from a faulty immune system - two we know well are arthritis and rheumatism. Often the lupus patient has family members with these autoimmune conditions or others such as MS, thyroid problems, diabetes, Raynauds, scleroderma, Sjogrens and others. What you can do ? As part of the month, Lupus UK ask you to ask GP practices, hospital clinics, pharmacies, workplaces and anywhere else in your local community you can think of, to display their posters so that it is in the minds of GPs and other professionals when they meet women complaining of unexplained problems. It got me thinking though about the value of peer group support for women/men with ongoing long term conditions they have to live with. We at the women’s centre run various peer groups but I know many such conditions have their own websites and their own support groups. So if you suffer such a condition – and there isn’t one - get vocal and demand a local group is available – one thing is for sure you won’t be alone! There is a great video about lupus: http://www.lupusuk.org.uk/ what-is-lupus

CLASSICAL music fans will find a warm welcome at Bognor Regis Recorded Music Club. The club's new season began last Friday, pictured above, and will continue on alternate Fridays until next May. There will be five visiting speakers, seven club member speakers, a Christmas party and the annual meeting followed bvy members' choice of music. The club's committee also ensure that the pleasure of listening to live music is well catered for. Two coach visits a year are usually arranged to the Portsmouth Guildhall to enjoy performances by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. A luncheon gathering at a good restaurant in the early part of the year. The club was set up more than 60 years to satisfy the need to enhance the listening experience by sharing classical music recordings with others. Its founders also wanted members to expand their musical repertoire and, perhaps, their knowledge of this enjoyable subject. High quality equipment was

bought by the club to ensure all music was heard to the best advantage. Its meetings are held from 7.30-10pm at the Rowland Rank Centre in Aldwick Road. Each meeting features a presentation, either by a visiting speaker or by a club member. The speaker will introduce a selection of music, usually classical but occasionally including jazz or light music, together with interesting comments about its origins or performance. However, listening is the main activity of the evening. As well as the main meetings, members can welcome small groups, usually about ten people, into their homes to listen to music, or perhaps watch or listen to a music DVD in an informal and friendly atmosphere with refreshments at halt-time. The club has just over 40 members. Newcomers can join them for £2 a visit and £1 for refreshments. Full membership is £20 a year. Details from club secretary, Barbara Chaundy, on 01243 781306 or brrmclub@ gmail.com

WRITERS and hair stylists in Bognor Regis have joined forces to help the country's servicemen and women. The Bognor Regis Write Club and Ravello hairdressers on Aldwick Road are raising money for Help for Heroes during this month. The link happened when regular customer Julia Macfarlane showed Dawn Jeffery the owner of Ravello, both pictured below, the anthology the writers' group have recently produced. They both saw an opportunity to help the worthy cause. Every copy of the £5 book, A Blast On The Waverley's Whistle, will see Dawn donate £2 to Help for Heroe. Her hair salon is also selling raffle tickets throughout October for the charity. Prizes have been donated by companies from the Bognor Regis area. Tickets are £2.50 a strip or 50p a ticket. The winners will be drawn on November 11. Julia, who runs the club and led the committee which edited the anthology, said: "We are delighted to be able to support Dawn's fundraising campaign. "I hope people enjoy the stories and poems and come back next year to buy our second anthology." She described A Blast On The Waverley's Whistle as an exciting and eclectic collection of stories and poems. Inside each copy, readers will find sensitivity and sympathy, humour and quirkiness, from the kitchen sink to worlds far away. The first 150 sold are guaranteed to have at least one autograph from the writers inside. It could be a future best seller's early work. Bognor Regis Write Club has 20 members. All are already published or working towards publication. The group meets monthly at The Waverley pub on Bognor Regis seafront, which inspired the title of the book. They read out their latest work and offer feedback and support each other. More information is available from www.bognorwriters.com or emailing bognorwriters@gmail.com The anthology can also be bought as an ebook with all the main suppliers.

Story of the Dearlings and Westgate brewery

f Trays such as this were used in pubs

By Pat Saunders, Volunteer at The Novium ON the western half of the brewery site in Westgate, now home to the offices of Mercer Ltd, lies a building bearing the date 1751. In the 1770s it was occupied by William Dearling and John Dearling described as wine merchants, common brewers and copartners. The Dearling family also held land at Kingsham to the south of Chichester. The eastern half of the site at this time was known as Scuttery Fields. It was purchased by William Humphrey from William Knott. In 1797 a deed of copartnership was drawn up between William and Edward Humphrey, who were both common brewers and who continued brewing at Westgate until 1830. Robert and George Henty acquired both

sites and ran a brewery business which was financed by their father George Henty Senior, a banker at Tarring near Worthing. In 1833 the brothers drew up a deed of copartnership and included a clause granting the option for one or other partner to leave or buy out the other. At the same time George married Maria Hector whose dowry included tied houses in the Meon Valley, which they supplied via the Spain Brewery, Petersfield. By 1853 Robert gave notice that he was quitting as he wished to travel and the partnership was dissolved in August 1855. George continued and was joined by his three sons Douglas, Percy (or ‘CP’) and Walter. In 1874 the firm became ‘George Henty & Sons’. George died in 1888 but the transition

to the sons was not smooth as Douglas had a falling out with Walter, who had less interest in the business. Douglas subsequently worked with Percy and in 1889 they had a new set of deeds of partnership drawn up. At this time they bought the South Street Brewery from the Gatehouse family Douglas died in 1892. He and his wife Julia didn’t have any children and therefore Percy continued running the firm, which became a limited liability company. The firm changed again with Percy’s death in 1920. The following year it merged with G S Constable & Son Ltd of Arundel and Littlehampton to form “Henty & Constable (Brewers) Ltd”. In January 1926 the Chichester Observer sent a reporter to undertake a tour of the brewery as it was, at the time, the town’s biggest business. The reporter wrote a very detailed account,

even including details of the firm’s very own football team. In the 1930s the company employed Arundel artist Ralph Ellis to paint public house signs for all of the properties in their tied estate. The company’s last managing director was Richard Henty, who had come to the firm in 1927. He also took a keen interest in local affairs being chairman of the Hospital Management Committee, later a councillor and during World War 2 served as an RAF officer in Tangmere’s operations room. In 1953 he became ill and spent five weeks in the Royal west Sussex Hospital. He recovered and went on a recuperation holiday but died suddenly whilst away. To meet death duties the business was sold off, being split between Friary Holroyd & Healy of Guildford and Watney Tamplins of Brighton.

Commander Michael Maddox OBE RN has the unique distinction of having served in frontline Naval Air Squadrons, equipped with the Sea Vixen, the Buccaneer, the Phantom and ASW Sea King helicopters during a 37 year career. His final appointment was as a Commanding Officer of the unit that controlled the RAF electronic warfare squadron and which was equipped with Canberra aircraft. During his talk, Mike will describe the diverse operations undertaken by naval aviators during the Cold War period. A most interesting talk - with plenty of pictures - is assured by this amazing speaker. Air Aces is the Arun and Chichester Air Enthusiasts Society. Its next meeting is at 7.30pm on October 24 at the Chichester Park Hotel in Chichester. Entrance is £3 for members, £5 for guests and free for under16s. Tickets are on sale on the evening. Further information about Air ACES at www.airaces.org.uk or David Batcock on 01243 823007.

That means the Chichester Runners ace has triumphed in all five of the races since its inception. And it was a great event for his fellow Chichester runners, too. Team-mates Michael Neville finished in second place in 1.24.31 and Charles Rodmell ran 1.25.53 to take third spot. And following them was Mike Houston, who placed fourth in 1.26.42. The first woman home in was Chichester Runners’ Anne Sydenham who recorded a time of 1.33.28. Organisers introduced two new events to encourage a greater breadth of runner so a team relay race and a ten miler also took place in tandem with the main event. Chichester runner Peter Concannon was first to finish the ten-mile course

James the 8th is Rocks goal king!

Chas and Daz are showing promise BOGNOR ABC juniors Charley Mason and Darren Rowles were both on the wrong end of split decisions at the Titchfield amateur boxing show last week. After watching young Charley Mason's fight via a live feed on Facebook I can sympathise with his Dad and trainer Paul Mason's annoyance at his son not being awarded the judges verdict. It looked to be a spirited, closelyfought contest, but one that young Mason, 15, can feel hard done by for being announced the runner-up in what was his 16th bout. Mason boxed Martin McDonagh of Golden Ring ABC, a Southamptonbased club with a long line of national champions in its history. Mason was planting his feet well sending out crisp combinations to head and body, with some neat footwork to avoid his opponents counters. There were some lively exchanges in what was a high tempo affair that served as solid evidence of the fitness regimes of the boxers retrospective clubs. "We're gutted not to get the decision," said Paul Mason. "Especially so as it is one we all felt we deserved. "Many of the spectators commented how we were unlucky not to get the result and even the gentleman handing out the trophies said he shouldn't be giving Charley the runner-up medal.

"These things happen in amateur boxing though. You can't win them all. Charley will learn from this and move on." Charley will be boxing in the NABC regional finals in November. Mcdonagh will be representing Hampshire. It makes for an intriguing rematch where Charley will have a chance to reverse the result. Darren Rowles was in another close fight losing to Moneyfields ABC boxer Bobby Pryor via a split decision. Head coach Charlie Martin said: "It wasn't one of Darren's better performances but to still be so close on the scorecards proves how far Darren has come. "He works so very hard in the gym. If he gets it right on the night he is very capable of beating anyone his weight." Rowles, 12, will be looking to get back to winning ways this Saturday in Eastbourne in what will be his tenth bout. Mason and Rowles are two perfect examples of the depth of raw boxing talent we have in Bognor. And it is the same in Chichester, too. Mason, a polite and quietly confident young man with a steely determination, has what it takes, in my opinion, to go a long way in boxing. And Rowles, one of the most dedicated and focused junior boxers I know, looks to me as if he is destined to follow suit.

Tom's quick out the Block By Robson Friend sport@sussexpost.co.uk TOMMY Block nabbed his first goal for Chichester City as they beat Arundel 4-1 in the SCFL Premier Division at Oaklands Park on Tuesday. Josh Clack, Jake Gale, and Scott Jones added goals to seal the win after the Mulletts raced into a 1-0 lead on just three minutes through Alex Biggs. The victory came after Miles Rutherford’s side drew 2-2 away to Crawley Down Gatwick after going ahead twice last Saturday. City took

a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute before Crawley pulled it back in the dying moments of the match. Despite going ahead on two occasions, Rutherford still believes his side were the luckier of two. The manager said: “On the day they deserved something out of the game. It was disappointing. "We worked quite hard off the ball but were very poor on the ball, it was most probably one of the worst performances in terms of possession of the ball I've seen since I've been at the club”. Rutherford feels

consistency will be key to the club’s success this season if they are able to make a realistic title challenge: “We brush it aside and go again but in the end it’s the teams that are most consistent in the league who win the league”. Ahead of tomorrow's visit to Worthing United for a league clash, Rutherford added: “If we play to our capabilities I'm really not that worried who we play or where. We can win any game if we play to our capabilities, and as I say, that means consistency is the key."

Fraser's firepower has helped Howell's outfit up to fourth in league By Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk JAMIE Howell's Rocks rocketed into the top four of the Ryman Premier with a deserved 2-0 victory over Merstham at Nyewood Lane on Tuesday. James Fraser's eighth goal of the campaign sealed the triumph late on after Ollie Pearce handed the home side a 1-0 advantage on 55 minutes. He pounced to prod home following good work from ever-improving striker Jimmy Wild. Both players were clinical in front of goal just three days previously as well when they each scored in the 3-1 win at Dulwich Hamlet. Now the Rocks face another home game when they host AFC Sudbury tomorrow (Saturday) as they bid to maintain their lofty spot in the league table. It's a position which not too many would have predicted when the Rocks lost a clutch of leading players over the summer. Three points were collected after a thrilling win at Dulwich last Saturday

LUKE Hubbard and Harry Goal both bagged two goals each as Pagham A Division U14s beat their Lions B side counterparts 5-0 in the Challenge Cup. Kai Williams grabbed a strike to cap an impressive display from Pagham at Larks Field and boss Jason Mines was delighted. He said: “We like to play football and that came through and it was a polished performance and the lads should be proud. Our B team battled well and can take a lot of positives from the games. “Thanks to Mark Robinson of MJ Roofing who has sponsored our kits.” *Picture shows teams lining up with the eventual winners seen in red.

f Jimmy Muitt in front of more than 2,200 fans. The home side exuded power and strength but were masterly outfootballed by Howell's pass-masters. A goal from Fraser deservedly put the Rocks ahead after 18 minutes before Ibra Sekajja equalised. Pearce handed Bognor the lead again on 30 minutes and substitute James Crane made sure the victory at the close with a well-taken strike. It was a winning debut for new keeper Dan Lincoln. The ex-Reading custodian has been signed to replace

Billy Granger and fans and critics have been impressed so far with his commanding authority between the sticks when called upon. Elsewhere, certain senior figures at the club predict great things of Jimmy Muitt, who came on as a second-half substitute in the win over Merstham. Muitt, who failed to make the grade as a teenager at Brighton, was signed by Howell in the summer from Lewes and is slowly but surely winning his battle back to fitness after a serious knee injury. Watch this space.

And as the former Nye Camp commercial manager held court among the great-ish and the good within the corridors of power at Champion Hill, he cut a figure akin to that of a Bond villain, see picture. But which 007 nemesis would best suit our very own blackclad master-crim? Your diarist is going with Dr Mo! NEWS reaches Post Sport HQ of a football club in our area whose chairman fancies himself as a bit of a crooner. The trouble is, no-one else seems to — especially his fellow train travellers on the way back to base after a recent away game. And we are told he is even more off key once postmatch libations have been taken. Lovely bloke. Can't sing.

Goal ace Forry fires four on debut in Selsey romp By Robson Friend sport@sussexpost.co.uk DEBUTANT Morgan Forry marked his first game for the Selsey with four goals as the home side thrashed Ringmer 7-1 in SCFL Division Two Bradley Dean opened the scoring for the Blues on 14 minutes at the Bunn Leisure Stadium on Saturday before Forry hit his first after 34 minutes then added another for 3-0 just after the break. He bagged his hat-trick after 54 minutes before Dean made his a double for 5-0 on the hour. Then Forry fired his fourth on 67 minutes and Ciaran McGreal wrapped things up three minutes before the end. Selsey travel to Mile Oak for a league clash tomorrow. Bosham sit pretty at the top of SCFL Division Two with an unblemished record and look to maintain their lead at the top of the table with a trip to Alfold tomorrow. The Robins saw off Rustington, managed now by former Pagham and Bognor defender Jon Tucker, 2-0 in the Intermediate Cup at Walton Lane on Saturday with goals from Alex Barnes on the hour and Oliver Gilbert just three minutes later. Sidlesham navigated a safe passage through the same competition with a comfortable 3-0 triumph at home to Tom Simmonds' Pagham U21s. The victory came when John Phillips

put the Sids ahead after 15 minutes and Thomas Bayley doubled the lead on the halfhour mark. Phillips snatched his second with five minutes remaining to complete the win over the young Lions. Sidlesham return to league action once more tomorrow when they travel to face Upper Beeding in a SCFL Division Two encounter.

Chichester Ladies enjoyed a goal-laden 8-2 triumph in their mismatched FA Cup third qualifying round game against Haringey Borough Ladies. Jess Lewry, Chloe Dowdell, Jade Widdows and Becky Barron each scored a single goal, while Cherelle Khassal and Charley WilsonBlakely both bagged braces. Chi Development squad won 3-1 away to Hassocks Ladies in the league, with a hat-trick for Kelly Ambler. City's U16s won 3-1 against Ferring Youth, the U14s lost 2-3 to Horsham Sparrows and the U12s were defeated 3-4 by Mile Oak. Pagham Ladies suffered a 5-0 defeat at league leaders Oakwood but showed enough improvement to give the outfit belief that they are progressing. It was no disgrace losing so heavily to Oakwood, who are a superb side and who will win the league title convincingly. Pagham are at home to Cowfold in the Sussex Cup on Sunday at Avisford Park, with a 2pm kick-off.
