by Ruth Scammell news@sussexpost.co.uk SCHOOL children will be put in peril if a development of 750 new homes goes ahead. That’s the fear of Richard Childs, chairman of the Chichester Society, who believes the youngsters will be at risk from a convoy of heavily-laden lorries ferrying supplies to the huge building site. Angry residents made their feelings clear as councillors deferred plans for the project in the west of Chichester. Around 100 people packed into the offices at Chichester District Council to hear the Turn to Page 5

Campaigners seek justice as courts close THE public are invited to a meeting to discuss justice provision in Chichester following the closure of the courts. The government announced the closure of Chichester’s Crown, County and Magistrates Courts in February. It leaves West Sussex without a Crown Court with the nearest Magistrates Courts in Worthing, Crawley or Horsham. Edward Cooke, vice chairman of the West Sussex branch of Resolution and past chairman of the Chichester and District Law Society, said: “The Ministry of Justice has recently announced that it will proceed by March 2017 with the closure despite its repeated assurances that it would not close the Chichester Combined Court until it had established alternative local justice provision. “It has failed to announce what local justice provision it intends to establish.” Resolution and the law society made a proposal for the Chichester Magistrates Court site, closing at the end of this month, to be converted to a new Chichester Combined Court. This would reduce court capacity in Chichester from the current level of seven court rooms to three, but would retain justice provision for the district. The proposal was supported by
Chichester MP Andrew Tyrie. Mr Cooke added: “Despite assurances the proposal would be considered and responded to, the Ministry of Justice says it will not now respond to the proposal. “The closure of all of Chichester Law Courts has dire ramifications. The closure of the Chichester Combined Court Centre will leave West Sussex as one of only two counties nationwide without a Crown Court. “It will also mean there is no local justice provision for citizens in the Chichester District, who will need to travel substantial distances should they need to attend court. “Witnesses and victims of crime in Crown Court matters will, should the closures proceed, need to travel to Lewes Crown Court, the nearest Crown Court on the South East Circuit, nearly 40 miles away. “Given the scale of proposed developments in the Chichester District over the next 15 years, it is vital that such a crucial element of Chichester's infrastructure is preserved." Organised by Chichester City Council, the meeting will take place in the Assembly Room, North Street on Tuesday, September 27 at 6.30pm.
Holy bike rides, Batman! Dynamic duo help raise charity funds by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk SUPERHERO cyclists Batman and Robin led a team of 10 staff from Henry Adams estate agents on a fund-raising 55-mile trip in support of Aldingbourne Trust. And the pedal-powered bikers have raised almost £2,500 for their efforts so far with donations still being made. The epic journey was completed with a back-up vehicle and visited Henry Adams' new homes developments around East Hampshire and West Sussex, starting at Clanfield, and on to Felpham and Bognor Regis before returning to Chichester where the ride concluded. The effort comes after Henry Adams joined the Trust as a fundraising partner earlier this year to help aise £3.78m to
build a new visitors’ centre where they can train and employ more people with learning disabilities. “It’s fantastic that Henry Adams have chosen to support our work,” said Martin Botting, of The Aldingbourne Trust. “It looks like being a fun and successful relationship. Every penny raised will help support our work in West Sussex.” Phillip Jordan, chief executive of Henry Adams, said: “We have chosen the Aldingbourne Trust as each of our offices is set within a community so we believe it’s important to give something back through supporting fundraising efforts. The new centre for The Aldingbourne Trust is an extremely worthwhile project with a long term legacy and we’ll be pulling out all the stops to help them on their way to that goal.”

HELP is at hand for people who want help and advice to try to give up smoking. THe official launch of this year’s Stoptober campaign will be marked with an event at County Hall, Chichester. THe Stop Smoking Mobile Clinic will be at County Hall on Tuesday, 20 September. Christine Field, who is West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for community wellbeing, will be attending the event from 1.30pm along with other members of the West Sussex County Council Cabinet. Free carbon monoxide testing will take place, as well as the big
red Stoptober wheel, an inflatable cigarette, a grumpy cigarette figure and various displays to highlight the very real dangers and effects of smoking. Stoptober is a national 28-day campaign for people to stop smoking with a view to giving up entirely. Support, help and information is available for participants throughout the campaign. Evidence shows that stopping smoking for 28 days means a smoker is five times more likely to quit for good. THe event at County Hall is free for people to find support, advice and information on how to stop smoking.
RENOVATION work will be taking place on the streets of Chichester from next week. West Sussex County Council is set to relay paving at South Street and West Street. The work, which is expected to cost £80,000, will get underway at the same time as renovations taking place at The Cross in the city centre, while the weather is reasonable. The attractive red block paving will replace temporary black top surfaces laid earlier this year. Work is due to start on Monday, September 19 and is expected to be completed by mid-November. Extra gangs are being used to speed up the work. The work will be undertaken over weekends and during extended working hours from Monday to Friday. The work will be finished in time for the city’s Christmas festivities. West Sussex County Council is working closely with Chichester’s Business Improvement District to introduce extra advertising for businesses affected by the works. County council cabinet member for highways and transport, John O’Brien, said: “We recognise the impact this disruption has on businesses affected by the works, and we apologise for that, particularly after gas works along South Street overran. “We will do everything we can to help. We want to work with the local businesses and encourage them to attach their signs to our hoardings. “We want to promote the fact that South Street’s shops restaurants and businesses are open as usual. For reasons of safety, we have to make these improvements now.”

Saved, by the bell! FIRE crews carried out a training exercise at Chichester Cathedral’s Bell Tower on Wednesday. THe exercise was designed to ensure both organisations would be able to work together if anyone was ever injured on the upper levels of the 120ft tower. THe tower was built in the late 14th or early 15th Century. Its upper levels, including the ringing chamber, are closed to the public but accessed via a narrow spiral staircase at least twice a week when the bells are rung. THe exercise tested

how fire crews and rescue unit would help ambulance crews safely evacuate an injured casualty from the upper levels of the tower. Event organiser James Trotman said: “THis was a great opportunity for the cathedral and fire service to work together to ensure we could quickly bring any injured party safely back down to the ground. It’s a fabulous structure but access is very difficult, particularly where the stone staircase becomes more and more narrow towards the top.

...planning committee discuss the plans for the homes at Whitehouse Farm on land west of Centurion Way and Old Broyle Road. The plans also include a local centre with employment, retail and community uses, a primary school, a medical centre, open space and playing pitches. It also includes associated landscaping, utilities and drainage infrastructure with an on-site foul sewage package treatment plant or pumping station. The plans come as Chichester DiWestrict Council desperately seeks land to meet the housing need as part of the local plan. This relates to the first phase of development as part of plans for a total of 1,600 new homes. Concerns were raised about the local schools in the city and the safety of pupils going to and from school each day. Mr Childs said: “I would ask the members to give serious consideration to the health and safety of the city’s children. “They are vulnerable because the proposed route to construction traffic puts at risk the hundreds of children going to and from local schools. “If you vote for the officer’s recommendation you will be giving approval to make the western side of Chichester a more dangerous place in which to live.” Many people at the meeting called for a second access road to the site to reduce the amount of heavy traffic going in and out of the area. Councillor Clare Apel said: “As one of the district councillors for the western
wards of Chichester I am very well aware of the need for new houses, especially affordable houses. “We also need green spaces for residents to enjoy the real countryside and wildlife.” Cllr Apel said she fears what the roads will be like if the site only has one access road. “I urge members of the committee to look at this in depth and refuse the application until a second access to the site is organised for the first phase of 750 houses.” Councillor Louise Goldsmith, speaking in her capacity as Chichester West ward member was among those objecting to the plans. She raised concerns about the traffic plans that have been announced as part of the development. “Whilst I sympathise with Chichester District Council in finding sites for housing, my greatest sympathies are with the residents. “This is inadequate and will severely impact on the existing road network, not just to the city but to the surrounding areas which are already, at times, heavily congested. “The traffic calming proposals for Sherborne Road don’t go far enough. More could and should be done. “Does this wonderful city and the residents deserve an awful lot better?” All committee members agreed to defer the application to allow further negotiations to take place and further information to be provided. Now have your say on the planned housing. We want to hear from you on the subject. Email your views to news@ sussexpost.co.uk

LIVES could be saved thanks to scheme in which firefighters attend medical emergencies with ambulance crews. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, (WSFRS) is to team up with South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) pilot the initiative. Fire crews will initially respond to immediately life-threatening so-called "Red 1" calls. Around 40 firefighters, including 12 new recruits, have completed the Immediate Emergency Care Responder course. The trial will commence later this autumn. The training enables firefighters, whose equipment includes a defibrillator, to provide treatment to patients in the moments before ambulance crews arrive. The trial is part of SECAmb’s wider ongoing work of emergency service collaboration across its region.
SECAmb's Matt England said: “This collaboration is about ensuring our most seriously-ill patients are seen as quickly as possible. When someone is in cardiac arrest, with every minute that passes their chances of survival diminish. "We’ll always assign an ambulance response to the call at the same time but if firefighters reach the scene before ambulance crews, they will be able to begin vital life-saving treatment.” Fire chief Lee Neale said: “A huge amount of work has been carried out in preparation for this trial and we are very pleased to have a team of staff who are trained to the high standard the ambulance service require to be able to respond to some of their emergency calls. If a life is at risk, we want to do all that we can to help that person. “We are very pleased to be working in partnership with the ambulance service and will continue to look at new ways of working to provide the best possible services to the communities where we live and work.”

A CHUBBY thief has been caught on camera stealing a dingy from Chichester Harbour. THe crook, who tried to hide by covering his face with a scarf but shows off his large stomach, is believed to be connected with the theft of an inflatable boat from the boathouse at Westlands Lane. At around midnight on August 24 going into August 25 CCTV shows the thief approach the boat house and entered buildings and took a rolled
up inflatable dingy. He disappears and then comes back into view with taped fingers to stop him to leaving his fingerprints. PC Grant Hebblewhite, who has been investigating, said: "Although he has some of his face covered we hope someone might recognise him from his walk and outline, which could be fairly distinctive." Peake of their powers! Sky NOT the limit, says starman by Ruth Scammell news@sussexpost.co.uk
BOUNDARY changes could see Plaistow voters move to a different constituency. The Boundary Commission of England's proposals are part of plans to reduce the number of people in the House of Commons and create equal sized seats. Voters would move from Chichester to Arundel and South Downs.

Autumn Event
PUPILS at Chichester High School received an inspirational message from star spaceman Major Tim Peake ahead of the new term. The astronaut, 44, a former Chichester High School for Boys pupil, took to social media platform Twitter to deliver a boost to children starting their first year at the school. The Chichester-born former test pilot became the first British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS)
when he landed on 15 December 2015. After 186 days in space, 30 scientific experiments, hundreds of Instagram posts, one London marathon and an appearance on the Brits, Peake came home and has been in demand ever since. But he took time out from his busy schedule when he tweeted: “Go Yr7! Have fun, be curious and enjoy learning — the sky's not the limit ;)”. Peake's former school has since merged with another. It's been a long time coming and now finally Chichester High School has united. This month the boys and girls schools
joined together for the first time and the school year is underway as one community. The school is sponsored by TKAT — which is one of the largest multiacademy trusts in the south of England. Nick Brown, head of school at Chichester High School, said: “We’ve had a fantastic start. Bringing two big schools together is always going to be a testing time. "But it’s testament to the hard work of the students and staff and our supporting governors and TKAT, as our academy trust, in making sure that we have had what has been such a smooth transition.”
The prefects at the school are in place ready to guide their fellow students to success in the summer. Mr Brant added: “We are delighted to have a fantastic group of prefects which are involved in all aspects from student voice to the curriculum to extra curricular and most importantly to ensure that this is a monumental year for all of those students. “It culminates in our prom and a fantastic set of GCSE results in the summer and then on to sixth form.” The school also used Twitter to publish a picture of the head boy and girl along with their deputies

BEST-SELLING West Sussex author Beryl Kingston has started a petition against changes to Blake's Cottage. Poet and visionary William Blake was put on trial for high treason at Chichester after a row with a solider in Felpham, near Bognor, where he lived in the cottage in 1800. He was acquitted. His three years there saw him write the words which became Jerusalem. Beryl says she is at odds with the intention of The Blake's Cottage Trust's to replace later extensions to the historic cottage in Blakes Road with a multifunctional building which it hopes will draw visitors. "People in the area will be horrified when they find out what could happen. It's all the wrong way round," said Beryl. "The trust should spend the money first on getting the cottage in a fit state for people to visit it. Once they have started

to come to have a look around where Blake lived, and they will come from all over the place to seeit , then you can use the profit to build a modern centre. "The trust think people will want to see the modern centre but people are interested in the cottage, not that. They will just think of it as a modern building in the garden and hardly notice it." The situation meant supporters of Blake had two jobs, said Beryl. One was to press for repairs to the Grade II-listed cottage to begin as soon as possible. The other was to insist no new building should even be considered until the cottage was successful. The Blake's Cottage Trust bought the cottage a year ago. It expects to announce the chosen architect for the new building this month after inviting a shortlist of four to compete for the work. Compiling the plans is expected to cost £50,000 and the new building has a budget of £500,000.

INSPIRED to write? Helen describes her journey to becoming a novelist. IN 2011, I started my debut novel ‘Beginnings’ with no idea it would trigger a series. Fitting it around my busy life as web designer with my husband, managing a home, as well as a social life, I never imagined there would be time. Yet it took six months to complete the first draft. After a complete re-write and edits, I ran it past a few readers where the feedback was positive. I have never looked back. People ask: "How do you write a book?" There’s no simple answer but this is the path I followed; the first stage being plot development. When you’re writing fiction, you have to start with an idea. In my case, I was intrigued by stories which involved power, especially in law and politics — how us lesser mortals are affected in the ever-turning wheel of life. It actually got me thinking about my own life; memories from the decades that stuck. Next came a synopsis. I spent a good six months mulling it over and somewhere in the clutter, I imagined a mystery rolling across the decades. Then the characters began to materialise. Once I had a good cast and a rough outline of the story, only
then did I start writing. It was really down to motivation. I was burning to get going but needed to find the right time. Writing involves self-discipline so my best advice would be to put aside a couple of hours such as a free Sunday afternoon. I would even go so far as to advise switching off the phone and computer to avoid distractions. Once I got started, the ideas kept coming. The series (titled "Same Face Different Place") combines a British mystery thriller with a love story and from that first book set in the criminal underworld of 1970s London, two more novels evolved. I now find myself writing and editing the fourth and final book of the series which I hope to finish soon. There is much to cherish in being a novelist and the reviews have been rewarding; but it can be a lonely business which is where networking helps. In 2013, a group of authors formed CHINDI. Based in areas around Chichester, our authors organise book fairs, competitions and fundraising events to promote our books and inspire other writers. We are a very active bunch. Among our activities we manned a book stall at the ROX festival and another at Arundel Festival which raised over £300 to go to Cancer Research UK.

Pupils back to school after blaze PUPILS were back in classes this week after the ferocious fire that destroyed Selsey Academy. Head teacher Tom Garfield has taken up an offer from Selsey-based Holiday Park firm Bunn Leisure and the students are in lessons in the venue’s White Horse Club, on the White Horse Holiday Park in Selsey. This is being used for lessons for Years 10 and 11 and is Part of short-term plan while temporary classroom structures to accommodate all 400 students are built at the school site. Bunn Leisure MD John Bun, said: "We were saddened to witness the fire and all the damage that it caused. "I have a huge resource at my disposal, and wanted to make this available to the school to assist wherever possible. I am pleased that one of our facilities meets the necessary requirements for it to be used for classes as this will mean less disruption to local families. "It's fantastic to see the community rallying round to help the school and we are proud to be part of that community effort." In a newsletter Mr Garfield said: "I'd like to thank you all for your support, we have been humbled by the response. I'd also like to give my thanks to the individuals and local organisations that have made so many practical offers of help and support.”

Chaucer text among ancient secrets revealed in cathedral VISITORS had the chance to venture up spiral staircases in search of secret spaces inside Chichester Cathedral. The event was part of the Heritage Open Days, England’s biggest festival of history and culture which encourages everyone to explore local treasures. The cathedral opened up parts normally closed to the public, including the Song School, an historic room dating back from the 1500s in the triforium, found by ascending a spiral staircase. The Song School is where Chichester's Cathedral Choir practise twice daily
under the Master of the Choristers. Visitors could also see the school’s secret chamber. The cathedral library was also open to the public. In the library, there is an early text by Chaucer, several medieval manuscripts and an intriguing book called the Kenilworth Missal, a 13th century volume from Kenilworth Priory with evidence of the cult of St Richard. The Bishop's Chapel was also open to visitors. The peaceful space is the private chapel of the Bishop of Chichester and home to a famous roundel wall - painting dating from the thirteenth century, known as 'The Chichester Roundel'. Receptionist Caroline Atkinson said: “There is an awful lot to see so it was very exciting. It is always very well attended.”

Backlash at claims that city is 'superficial and snobbish' ANGRY Chichester residents have hit out at claims that the city is possibly “the most superficial and snobbish” place in the country. An online rant by “anonymous visitor” has irked folk who are furious at the suggestions in a foul-mouthed review of the city on website livehere.co.uk. One passage in the diatribe reads: “They like to think of themselves as intelligent and superior to everyone else, that is why they just about all talk down to you and patronise other people. In fact they are no more, and usually less, intelligent than most people. Their stupidity is disguised, poorly, by fake ‘posh’ accents which make them sound even bigger ********* than they are.” Another section of the so-called review reads: “Oh, don’t park your car anywhere near any of their homes either. They will come out, bray arrogantly at you to go away, before the woman of the house charges out, goes berserk and kicks your car before opening your door, grabbing you and trying to drag you out. The arrogance of these people is unbelievable.” But mum-of-three Stacey Strudwick says the hate-filled rant is a case of sour grapes. She said: “Chichester has certain standards and what’s wrong with that? I'd say we are as friendly as any city and I can think of lots that are far worse to visit. “This is a bitter view that doesn’t have any context. Why it has been published I don’t honestly know.”

CHAMPAGNE flutes clinked, the air hung heavy with the revved-up emissions of roaring engines and folk paraded in vintage get-ups. It could mean only one thing: Goodwood Revival. And the verdict from visitors among the estimated 150,000 fans who flocked to the classic three-day event last weekend was that the 2016 festival was the biggest and best to date. The meeting gave everyone the chance to take a giant step back in time with the festival celebrating the glamour of car racing during Goodwood’s heyday as a motor circuit between 1948 and 1966. Leather-clad petrol heads rubbed shoulders with vintage fashion enthusiasts as the era was marked in thrilling style both in the stands and on the race track. And homage was paid to the England World Cup victory against West Germany back in 1966 with a cavalcade of vehicles
on parade as they mimicked making their way to Wembley Stadium to witness the historic 4-2 triumph against the old enemy. Hair stylist Daren Terry, who owns Lotus Styling in Bognor Regis, helped create his wife Kate’s look for the occasion. He said: “It was a fabulous event, arguably the best ever from my memory, anyway We attended on the Sunday which was glorious and the weather helped to make it a really glorious affair. "It was brilliantly organised, everyone made a real effort and it is a true credit to everyone involved that this event is known all over the world." Rain dampened spirits a little on the Saturday but visitors enjoyed warm weather and sunshine on the Friday, which was first day of the event. And as the dust settled, the glad-rages were packed away, the huge number of vehicles went back to garages across the globe for TLC and perhaps a mechanical tweak. Same again next year!

10k could net £50k for Luffa by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk
f Vintage get-ups were the order of the festival
PUPILS and staff aim to raise £50,000 from a sponsored walk to help pay for a refurbishment project at Bishop Luffa School. Around 1,500 participants will set off on “The Big Walk” on October 9, to collect funds to pay for a £2.5million makeover of part of the Chichester school. The 10k route will take children and adults from the school along Centurion Way to just beyond Lavant, and back. Headteacher Nick Taunt said: “Every member of the school will take part – pupils, sixth form students, teachers and support staff, study supervisors and teaching assistants, caretakers and caterers. “We are midway through our major refurbishment of K Block. The project is transforming this 1970s teaching block from the inside with new, spacious classrooms, wide corridors, meeting rooms and reception. . “The £2.5million grant covers the structural work. But we want to make this area a vibrant interactive learning environment. We need £75,000 to equip the Block with the technology to enhance and enliven teaching and learning. "It will enable pupils to work on internet research, document editing and filming their presentations. Laptops and ipads will free pupils from the constraints of the school classroom and enable them to communicate with and learn from communities across the world. “Every young person benefits from new technology and its impact throughout the school. It is right, now, to ask every young person to help us finish our fundraising. “Pupils are encouraged to ask sponsors for a small amount for each kilometre they walk. We would hit our target if we each raised just £33.33.”

f Another A27 jam
PLANS to improve the congestion on the A27 have divided the two councils in Chichester. Highways England is holding a public consultation with five different options to improve the heavily clogged road. Councillors at Chichester City Council discussed the plans and said option 1A would be their preference. This would see new slip roads at the Fishbourne and Bognor junctions with restricted access at Oving only and no works at Stockbridge or Whyke. But officers at Chichester District Council have recommended option 2 which would again see new slip roads at the Fishbourne and Bognor junctions and restricted access at others with closures at Stockbridge and Whyke plus a new Stockbridge link road from Fishbourne to the B2145. They said it offers the greatest long term benefits for the Chichester area and provides the greatest reductions in journey times. Officers also said it has the best performance in reducing accidents and has the greatest journey time reliability. But councillors at the city council said they would only accept option 1A if there was a new southern link road from the Fishbourne roundabout to the A286 near the Appledram Lane junction. They also want to see improvements to
the Stockbridge and Whyke roundabouts, retention of the Oving Lights at the Oving Road/A27 junction and provision of a replacement footbridge over Stockbridge roundabout over the A27 to make it more user-friendly. Chairman of the planning committee at the city council Jane Kilby said: “The committee looked at all the options that have been put forward. We felt that none of them would perfectly fit the solution. “But the committee debated all the options and just felt it was the one that would have less impact on the environment issues and of all the options we felt it may solve the problem.” Ms Kilby added that there is work to be done to eradicate the problems that hit the roads surrounding Chichester during busy periods of the day. “At rush hour times and peak times it’s bad, especially at the Fishbourne and Bognor junctions. It’s important something is done there to relieve the pressure at peak times and holiday times. “In mornings, for people travelling from Bognor to Chichester there’s a tailback. Something must improve the flow.” Councillors at the city council meeting also approved the recommendation. Meanwhile, councillors at Chichester District Council will meet at a special cabinet meeting to discuss it further on Tuesday, September 20. Public exhibitions have been carried out across the area. Consultation will continue to run until Thursday, September 22.

The Infiltrator)
Release date: 15 September Director: Adam Wingard Starring: James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Corbin Reid Genre: Horror, Thriller
Release date: 16 September Director: Brad Furman Starring: Bryan Cranston, John Leguizamo, Diane Kruger Genre: Biography, Crime, Drama
It’s been 20 years since James’s sister and her two friends vanished into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland, leaving a trail of theories and suspicions in their wake. James and his friends Peter, Ashley and film student Lisa venture into the same woods each with a camera to uncover the mysteries surrounding their disappearance. But as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realise the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.
Based on a true story, Federal agent Robert "Bob" Mazur goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1986 by posing as a slick, money-laundering businessman. Navigating a vicious criminal network in which the slightest slip-up could cost him his life, Mazur risks it all building a case that leads to indictments of 85 drug lords and the corrupt bankers who cleaned their dirty money, along with the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International.
f Blair Witch f Bridget Jones’s Baby Bridget Jones’s Baby z Release date: 16 September Director: Sharon Maguire Starring: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey Genre: Comedy, Romance Fifteen years after we first opened her diary, the hilariously awkward, thirty-something singleton is now forty-something and single again following a split from Mark Darcy. Each of the previous Bridget Jones films has hinged on our hapless heroine’s choice between two
rival suitors, and the third chapter finds her facing a similar decision. After a bumbling encounter, handsome American Jack Qwant becomes Darcy’s new rival for Bridget’s affection. But another love triangle is just the tip of the iceberg. As the title suggests, Bridget Jones is pregnant and either man could be the father! Unlike the previous films, Bridget Jones’s Baby is not based on a Helen Fielding novel and instead uses her columns for The Independent as inspiration. With two perfect suitors, a happy ending seems inevitable whoever she chooses, which makes this jubilant romantic comedy a guaranteed perfect night, whether you’re watching with friends or all by yourself.

Dazzled by the delights of Dorset and Devon Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys THIS week I devote my column to a late August foray into Dorset and East Devon in search of sun, relaxation, good food and fine wine — and indeed I was to discover hidden treasures in this location. To this end I booked two nights at the Fernhill Hotel in Charmouth (a couple of miles from Lyme Regis) with its stunning, sun-blessed, outdoor heated swimming pool and well appointed rooms. This hotel is run by the charming owners Jo and Rob Illingworth and Rob is a great hotel bar host — the wines on offer in the good restaurant are carefully selected with quality in mind. Lyme Regis being close by, I was able to observe almost a bygone seaside holiday scene on a beach with imported French sand upon which families indulged in the simplest of pleasures with utmost delight. The cafe culture here was one I wish that our own Regis, namely Bognor Regis, would emulate. It was in a seaside outside area that I encountered David of Dalwood vineyard, which I will explore in the next section. Chancing upon a rather salubrious-looking joint quaintly named the French Lieutenant's Bistro
(do you recall the book by John Fowles?), I managed to secure an outside table affording me a stunning view of the bay. I delighted in regaling my palate with some marvellous seafood and now realise that the warm welcome given by Jonathan Golding and partner Fiona at the bar said everything about an establishment aiming to please and succeeding totally in that aim. Prior reservation is de rigueur and this restaurant, and its charming staff and young chefs deserves all the accolades. Do you believe in serendipity? Well, I believe that my chance encounter with David Dower of Dalwood Vineyard is a prime example thereof. He agreed to meet me in the Tuckers Arms, his local, which was somewhat akin to entering a monastery with its 13th century interior. I
duly tucked in to the most hearty food and generous portions and was able to order one of the few remaining 2013 Dalwood Brut and was pleasantly surprised by its quality — in fact, one of the best English sparkling wines I have ever tasted ! Up the hill we then trudged to the Dalwood Vineyard to find 3,000 vines planted on a three acre hillside on land owned by local farmer Les White — all the more unique as this is a hobby business formed by a group of friends who are all residents of the small Devon village of Dalwood. David explained to me that, using the Seyval Blanc grape, their first picking in 2013 produced 2200 bottles of Brut and the one I in fact tasted won a bronze medal in the 2014 World Wine Awards. The second picking produced a dry still

white wine (about 1,700 bottles) and I have subsequently tasted this and approve of its quality. The third picking 2015 (circa 2,500 bottles of Brut) will be available early 2017 with wines available direct from David Dower on 07919 403251 — I shall certainly be placing an order. As we parted David recommended Miller's Farm Shop in nearby Axminster for French wine as he buys every week — off I went, my last stop before setting off home. My eyes began to bulge as I surveyed the huge range of French wines on sale at Miller's with wines you rarely see in supermarkets! I carefully selected about eight wines, advised a young man which ones to try and then sought out the owner Malcolm Miller to discuss my purchases.
He was a very interesting character and told me that he buys wine weekly in France and trusts the French's judgment when selecting. The Givry Ier Cru 2014 I bought is difficult to source in England and was good value for about £10 and the Pouilly Fume Gilles Blanchet 2015 was resplendent in terms of flavour and was under £11. In terms of reds the £5.99 Breathing Space Margaret River Shiraz 2012 took my breath away and the Chateau LaroseTrintaudon Haut Medoc 2012 at about £15 was beautifully balanced and dry and provided instant gratification as well as good length and lovely red fruit flavours. Malcolm Miller knows his wine and seems to specialise in the second wines of classy producers .

Delicious food at Grill FANCY a tasty takeaway meal to include mouth-watering mozzarella fingers? Would your appetite be satisfied with marinated fillet of lamb or chicken on the skewer, interlaced with slices of onion, green peppers and mushrooms, grilled over a charcoal grill? Try a traditional Turkish dolma; stuffed wine leaves with rice, herbs and spices. Perhaps a vegetarian pizza with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and sweetcorn fits the bill? It all sounds delicious, right? It could easily be a selection of grub worthy of a trendy High Street eatery menu. But all of the above is available from one of the best of what is more commonly known “kebab shops’ in Bognor Regis. The Charcoal Grill, in the town’s Station Road, offers a vast selection of food to eat in or takeaway and has proved very popular with customers over the 20 years it has been serving these excellent offerings. Be it pizza, burgers or kebabs, all meals on the extensive menu are prepared with fresh ingredients by experienced staff who will ensure that your food is cooked just the way you like it.
Customer Lesley Todd has been a regular at the Charcoal Grill for many years and is happy to endorse both the quality of the service and the food. She said: “I have used this place for a long time now and the guys are so friendly. I find that the food quality is second to none, the delivery is quick and it's open very late which can be handy, especially when I have been working long hours. “I genuinely can’t fault it. They also cater for all the family and have a kids’ menu so if you want to have a break from cooking try ordering a takeaway and I am sure that you will not be disappointed.” And the dessert menu is particularly tempting, too. Try the Baklava; a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey. Delicious!

Dear Editor
WELCOME to our latest column provided by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre. These columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help. It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.
Dear Editor
THE richest 1% of the UK population owns more than 20 times the wealth of the poorest fifth, according to Oxfam. That made Britain one of the most unequal countries in the developed world – can you believe that? In a nutshell, the charity's report analysed data which found that the richest 10% of the UK population own over half of the country's total wealth, with the top 1% owning nearly a quarter (23%). The poorest 20% share just 0.8% of the UK's wealth between them. Oxfam has urged Prime Minister Theresa May to help close the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'. Whatever your thoughts are on politics - inequality is a massive barrier to tackling poverty and has created an economy that clearly isn't working for everyone. While executive pay soars, one in five people live below the poverty line and struggle to pay their bills and put food on the table. What needs to happen? Closing wage gaps, incentivising investment in companies' staff and making sure they pay their fair share of taxes is a start. The government would say they have begun to make changes such as bringing in the National Living Wage and reforming the welfare system, but admits that more needs to be done to help both the poorest in the UK as well as families struggling to make ends meet. However, some go as far to say - unless we can reverse the inequality trends of the past 35 years - the ensuing social chaos will eventually destroy democracy. Can you make a difference? Campaign, volunteer, fundraise, donate, shop - get involved in any way that suits you. Set change in motion and start transforming lives today. You can make a difference. Feel this is not enough - feel more action is needed? There are many action groups but one which seems to be growing and has an increasing coverage is The People's Assembly. The People’s Assembly is a broad united national campaign against austerity, cuts and privatisation in our workplaces, community and welfare services, based on general agreement with the signatories’ Founding Statement. Linked to no political party and based on affiliation by individual supporters, unions nationally and locally, anticuts campaigns, and other student, pensioner, unemployed, disabled people’s, women’s, black people’s, youth and LGBT campaigning organisations. It aspires to support, encourage, coordinate joint action, and facilitates a transfer of experience rather than to command. You can join a local group and play a community activist role, knowing it is not linked to political parties. Checkout: http://www.thepeoplesassembly.org.uk
Bognor Regis is desperately in need of regeneration to reverse its reverse economic, social and physical decline, which is as a result of its fall from grace as a tourist destination, due in part to previous and to some extent recent poor planning decisions, and ADC’s obvious and hopefully soon to be historic bias towards Littlehampton. There is no doubt successful regeneration will strengthen Bognor as a community and create new economic opportunities. To date there have been a number of proposals but none as well considered and architecturally inspiring as those proposed by The Sir Richard Hotham Project, shown above, which is fully funded to the tune of £80m. There are essentially three elements to successful regeneration: • Cultural – leading to inward investment, higher resident & visitor spend, job creation voluntary, business and cultural sector partnerships for example the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have already expressed interest with
their Resound programme; • Economic Social - change of image/reputation/residents' and visitors' perceptions of the town of the town, increased social cohesion bringing with it greater confidence and aspiration, improved health; • Environmental/ Physical – quality architecture in keeping with its environment and drawing on the town's history, incorporation of environmental improvements, development and use of mixed-use spaces. It is obvious to me, the leisure, hotel and residential development on the current Regis Centre site along with the theatre and associated hotel and seafront restaurant meets all these requirements. The theatre/conference venue which is already attracting interest will hold over 1,000 people who will spend money in the town, stay in local hotels, and eat in local restaurants, and not just walk along the prom and buying fish and chips as is the case with Butlin's visitors who are encouraged to stay, eat and be entertained in the resort. Thank you for your fair and balanced coverage of the debate on which option (if any), would best serve the needs of Chichester. Since your last edition, a crowded meeting organised by Donnington Parish Council overwhelmingly voted for the 'No Option' choice with a caveat that the Northern Bypass Option be re-considered as it was mysteriously withdrawn from the original list of options. In addition, the Chichester Canal Trust have described Option 2 as a 'travesty' and argue forcefully that this option would be hugely detrimental to their successful business and all users of the canal facilities. These latest contributions to the consultative exercise add their weight to the almost universal objections to Option 2 from parish councils in the Manhood Peninsula, residents' groups and individuals south of the A27 who believe this option would spell disaster for this area of Chichester. The bottom line is: £280 million, 41 months of misery and traffic chaos during the construction phase for a two minute saving on local journey times. What economic or environmental arguments could possibly justify such a ridiculous deal? Mike Harper, Canal Walk, Chichester I am curious to know if the 5,000 signatures that were collected against the proposal for a northern route, were actually from people who live in the Chichester area or just from "friends" of the Goodwood estate, who do not have to deal with the traffic congestion on a daily basis. R.L., Merston, Chichester. There is only one proper solution to the horrible traffic problem in Chichester – this is a Northern By pass route. It is a scandal that it was not put forward as an option.

f Exterior view of Cawley Almshouse. The chapel is in the centre, also known as the hospital of St Bartholomew. Built in 1625.
Written by Lorna Still, volunteer at the Novium Museum CHICHESTER does not feature largely in accounts of the English Civil War, but there are some very interesting connections nonetheless. William Juxon was born in 1582 and baptised in the Parish of St Peter the Great, which was then in the north transept of Chichester Cathedral. He attended the Prebendal School, the Merchant Taylor’s School and St John’s College, Oxford, where he studied law and then theology. In 1633, he was Bishop of London and by 1636 also Lord High Treasurer. He advised Charles I during the Civil War, and Charles called him ‘that good man’. As chaplain to King Charles, Juxon was the only priest with him at the scaffold, telling him, ‘You are exchanged from a temporal to an eternal
crown, a good exchange’. Juxon was deprived of his bishopric in 1649 and retired to Gloucestershire, where he became known for the quality of his hunting dogs. At the Restoration of Charles II he was named Archbishop of Canterbury and, though weak and infirm, he officiated at the coronation, placing the crown on the King’s head. He died on 4th June 1663. He did not forget Chichester, leaving in his will £100 for the poor in the parish of his birth. William Cawley was born in 1602, the son of a wealthy brewer. William also went to the Prebendal School before going on to Oxford and Gray’s Inn. Following his father’s wishes, he founded St Bartholomew’s Hospital in Broyle Road for the ‘residence and maintenance of 12 decayed tradesmen of

Chichester’. He was elected MP for Chichester in 1628 and for Midhurst in 1640. During the Civil War, the Cathedral clergy and most of the gentry supported the king, while most merchants and residents favoured Parliament. On 24th August 1642, Cawley declared Chichester to be for Parliament, but fled to Portsmouth when Royalists seized the city. However, he later wrote a letter explaining the situation, which resulted in Sir William Waller’s Parliamentary force being sent to recapture Chichester. Waller arrived outside the walls on 21st December 1642 and besieged the city, using the Cawley almshouses and mounting cannon on the roof of St Pancras Church. The Royalists surrendered on 27th December and Waller’s soldiers plundered the Cathedral. Troops were garrisoned in Chichester for four years. Waller, who had taken other places in the south, including Arundel Castle, was nicknamed ‘William the
Conqueror’. It is interesting to note that he later supported the restoration of Charles II. Cawley was appointed to the High Court of Justice and was one of the 59 people who signed Charles I’s death warrant. During the Commonwealth, he was active on parliamentary committees and enthusiastically seized and sold the property of Royalists. At the Restoration, he fled to Belgium and then to Vevey in Switzerland, where he died in 1666. He had always wanted to be buried in the chapel of the almshouse he had founded. In the 19th century, a lead case with a male skeleton was found in a vault under the floor of this chapel. It is believed that this could be Cawley’s body, secretly smuggled home. A portrait of William Cawley can be seen at the Council House, and a memorial to him and his father at the cathedral (moved from St Andrew’s, Oxmarket). The almshouse chapel still stands in Broyle Road.

Dear Editor I am really upset about the move of Chichester Post Office. I was born in Chichester 51 years ago and the Post Office has always been a major part of the local people's life. The Royal Mail should appeal
about this decision! Elderly people and disabled people alike from the local community rely on having the Post Office close to the bus stops by the Cathedral. It should not be allowed!!! Tess Springall Lavant
A HIGHLIGHT of the forthcoming year for Bognor Regis Music Club will be a performance by Alison Rose. Alison, pictured above, was the winner of the 2015 Maggie Teyte Prize and has recently completed her studies on the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is a National Opera Studio Young Artist for 2015/16 and is certain to bring the grace and elegance of opera to the club. Its 39th season will begin after its annual general meeting tomorrow. Anyone with a passion for song and music is welcome to join. Performers who will be joining Alison in the coming months will include a huge range of local, talented musicians. They will include shows from members of the club, pupils from The Regis School of Music and University of Chichester students. They will unite in a varied programme of songs, instrumental solos and ensembles. The Regis Music and Concert Club was formed in 1977 to promote the performance of vocal and instrumental chamber music for members and visitors. The name was changed to the present title 22 years later. Its recitals continue to be held in the Regency-style premises, boasting a minstrels' gallery, at 2 Sudley Road. Admission prices for professional concerts are £9 members and £11 visitors.

home run from Peter Martin, the Falcons were 3-1 behind, but Bart Garofalo, Louise Rowe and Bronte Harvey got them back on track. Falcons flapped in the field and Spitfires had a 13-7 lead in the fifth. Clive Janes earned a walk and Milko Giuffrida caused pandemonium in the dugout as he knocked a triple to score two runs and get the Falcons just two runs behind going into the final inning. Jason Mercer struck out yet another hitter to shut out the Spitfires. In bat and needing three runs to win it, Mercer walked, Janes brought him home with a double, and Emma Brown got herself on third base to tie the game. Last batter Louise Rowe sslugged the ball back at the Spitfires pitcher, who tossed it to Paige Jones on first base where it was dropped, but Jones got the ball under control just before Rowe arrived at the base for the third out, tying the game 13-13. “We’ll take a tie, this was a great comeback,” said captain David Morris. “Our juniors had a great day on the field. Put that next to a division win and that’s not a bad day at all!”
Blues are grounded in sky-high Raiders romp added the extras for a deserved 15-7 interval lead. Layton bulldozed over for the third try and the captain capped his great game with a skilful try. Raiders: Craine, Ceillam, L. Batiste, Skovronek, Merrien, Hill, J. Batiste, M. Thomas; Nixon, O. Thomas, Brown, Jones, Whitehead, Davison, Sayer. Replacements: A. Armstrong, Steventon and Campbell. Chichester: Belcher, Shepherd, Dowding, Lindsay, Dickin, Johnson, Bentail, Davies, Seaman, Anscombe, Thompson, Maslen, Robson, Farmer, Golds. Replacements: Woodworth, Lumbard and Miller. Meanwhile, a new-look Chichester 4ths, pictured inset, top, ran out in a farewell game to Tom Polhill, who is moving away from the area, and recorded a 40-0 win at home to Holbrook. A message on the club website said: "On behalf of Chichester RFC, we would like to thank Tom for his contribution to the club both as a mini and junior as well as a senior player. He will be sorely missed and welcomed back in the clubhouse at any time."
by Robert Henry sport@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER were brought down to earth with a bump after jetting out to Guernsey for a National League 3 London & SE clash. The Blues suffered a 27-7 defeat at Footes Lane on Saturday, their second successive reverse after a narrow 18-17 opening day defeat at Westcombe Park the week before. They get the chance to chalk up their first win of the league campaign tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Shelford at Oaklands Park. Shelford, a team who got the better of the Blues home and away last season, will prove a test for the home side. They beat Colchester 15-3 last week following a 37-8 loss at Guildford. Against the Guernsey Raiders, Chichester made the brighter start and they led early on through a converted try for Chris Johnson. But with Thomas slotting over a penalty and Craine diving over Raiders were ahead and just before the break Dave Davison was sent in and Thomas

f Action from the defeat
NEWLY-PROMOTED Bognor started the London Division Three south west campaign with moralecrushing 52-0 hammering by Eastliegh. The home side endured a heavy seven-try defeat by the powerful Hampshire outfit at a rain-sodden Hampshire Avenue. The visitors seemed fitter and stronger than the home side and showed their intent early on despite the wet conditions, which made handling very difficult on the day. Bognor’s only tactic seemed to be sending single big runners around the fringe of the breakdown but it didn’t pay off. Eastleigh grew in confidence and showed great stamina and went
in and the break leading by an already convincing 17-0. Before long it was 24-0 as the hosts huffed and puffed but had no answer to the relentless pressure applied by Eastleigh. Inevitably, Bognor tired and offered little opposition to the strong running of Eastleigh's fitter players. The visitors added points at will and it was 45-0 with just minutes remaining thanks to their sixth try, the best of the game, and a conversion. But Eastleigh weren't finished and had time for one last try, and the conversion, to leave the final score at 0-52. Bognor’s Doug Millen said: “THe game started relatively evenly and the first ten minutes started with most of the play between the 22s. In what was a wet and windy day it

made it hard to secure good line out ball. Bognor were out of sorts. "THere were some good performances from Sam Newcombe, Dan Harding and Chris Webb. Pat Gibbs was unlucky not to score. On a more positive note congratulations to first team captain Lee Balchin on his marriage to Lindsey." Meanwhile, Bognor 2nd XV suffered a narrow loss when they went down 17-15 at home to Shoreham in London & SE Division - Sussex Spitfire 1. Bognor 3rd XV took a hiding when they lost 40-0 at home to their Burgess Hill counterparts in a Sussex Shepherd Neame Leagues Division 4 West encounter. Bognor Colts picked up a decent victory with a 34-12 win over Petersfield in a friendly match.

Falcons fly high and soar to title CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club took the Division three title with a win and a tie in a double-header at Southampton Spitfires. The first game, against Spitfires Mk2, saw a remarkable debut for junior Falcon Freya Peake, pictured, who slapped a third base hit and two singles on the day, whilst holding her own in right field. Lauren Smith helped the Falcons get ahead in the early innings and the Chichester side kept their lead all through the game. Pitcher Jason Mercer was on fire with his curveball tying the Spitfires in knots as David Morris snapped up several hits down the third base line to keep the Falcons in the lead. Peter Martin was smart to stick to base hitting, leaving the slugging to Miguel Rosa to bring in shortstop Ben Sawkins on a well-placed double in the third. Lucy Morris kept a steady second base, her awareness and heads-up play earned her an unassisted double play as she bagged out one runner and tagged another. The Falcons eventually ran out 25-5 winners before a group huddle and quick celebration before facing the Spitfires' first team. Despite a first inning

SCOTT Jones struck twice to hand Chichester City a 3-2 victory over Whitstable Town in an FA Vase replay at Oaklands Park on Tuesday. City came from 2-1 behind to grab the dramatic win. Jones was on hand to fire in after half an hour and again on 73 minutes with Josh Clack hitting a third on 82 minutes for Miles Rutherford's outfit. The win came after City earned the replay with a 2-2 draw at Whitstable on Saturday through goals from Josh Lee and Clack. Now Chichester must turn their attention to their league campaign once more after the drama of the FA Vase. They travel to the Beacon to face mid-table Hassocks tomorrow (Saturday) in a bid to improve their league standing, which is already heartening given that they sit in the mix in the pack chasing the title. After the game at Hassocks, Rutherford’s men are back in cup action when they go to Little Common on Tuesday (Sep 20) for a RUR Charity Cup first round clash. Meanwhile, Chichester reserves lost 3-2 at home to Broadbridge Heath, with Jake Goulding scoring twice for the Oaklands Park second string. Selsey enjoyed a 4-1 FA Vase win over Langney Wanderers at the Bunn Lesiure Stadium on Tuesday. Linden Miller gave the Blues the lead on 19 minutes and it was 2-0 three minutes later when James Parsons struck. The visitors pulled a goal back when Nathan Crabb scored on the half hour mark but Selsey upped their game once more. Joe Clarke
Dowdell's a real dazzler as Greenfield's girls grab win to stay top of the pile CHLOE Dowdell set FAWPL South West 1 division leaders Chichester on their way to a 2-0 win against Larkhall LFC, writes ALAN PRICE. City manager Liam Greenfield gave Molly Clark, signed during the week, her debut in the heart of midfield. With 15 minutes left the deadlock was broken when Dowdell slid the ball home through a crowd of players. Chichester sealed the points in injury time when substitute Kally Ambler, was upended in the box and a penalty given and Shannon Albuery slot home, pictured. CCLFC: Sally-Ann Thompson. Meanwhile, the club’s Development Squad lost 6-1 at home to Meridian Ladies with the only goal for the hosts coming from Steph Mills. The U14s lost 6-2 away to Eastbourne and the U12s won 10-0 away to Shoreham. Elsewhere, Chichester City U13 Colts made a great start to the season with at 7-5 victory over Worthing United Colts at Oaklands Park. The
team were ready for the challenge wearing their new match kit sponsored by Pizza Hut. Their first goal of the season hammered home by Jack Kennedy. Two more goals followed from Harry Angel. Josh Jensen made two great saves before Worthing made it 3-1at the break. George Purvis added a goal before

made it 3-1 five minutes before the break and Bradley Dean sealed a memorable triumph with a goal on 67 minutes. Selsey's victory came after a pulsating 4-4 extra-time draw forced a replay on Saturday. Langney raced into a 3-0 lead before Toby Lempriere pulled one back then Joe Clarke made it 3-2 on the hour and hit another for 3-3 before the hosts nicked a fourth, then Bradley Dean made it all square. And the two teams make it three games against each other in seven days when they meet again in Eastbourne for a division one game tomorrow (Saturday). Elsewhere, Bosham go into tomorrow’s division two
encounter at home to Westfield hoping to replicate their goal-scoring exploits from last week. The Walton Lane outfit hit Three Bridges U21 for six without reply in the Intermediate Cup first round. Alex Barnes grabbed a hat-trick, Graeme Downed bagged a brace and Jake Lafferty scored, too, in the 6-0 win. Sidlesham take on Cowfold at the Rec no doubt in confident mood following their 10goal thriller at home to Peacehaven in the first round of the Intermediate Cup. They came out 6-4 winners with Dan Bassil snatching a hat-trick, Will Essai bagged a couple and Joe Leggett hit the other. Scott Murfin grabbed the only goal of the game from a brilliant free-kick to give Pagham a 1-0 win over Wick at Crabtree Park on Tuesday night. Striker Murfin hit home on the stroke of half-time against Jon Tucker's side, who have been shipping far too many goals of late. But the home side did their best to thwart Mark Bennett's men and it need a workmanlike display from the Lions to preserve the lead and take all three points. The win came after it was Murfin who had handed the Nyetimber Lane side a deserved 1-0 victory at Bearsted in the FA Vase on Saturday. Pagham host Haywards Heath in the Premier League tomorrow and go to Arundel in the RUR Charity Cup on Tuesday. Pagham's U21 outfit chalked up a 3-0 Intermediate Cup win at Nyetimber Lane over Haywards Heath Town reserves, pictured. Goals from George Cody (14), David Crouch (48) and Josh Irish (63) saw the young Lions through.

(A) ICAY F2 R E L BIL CUP Q M FA 17, 3P SEP the stoppage. Sometimes,, though fighters, need to be saved from themselves. The announcement of the outcome was met with a large number of boos from the crowed. I must reiterate how it was a good stoppage in my eyes. Had he fought on he may have been seriously injured. For me, these big fights are what boxings all about. I haven't been that nervous or excited in front of the tv since watching my hero Oscar de la Hoya fight almost a decade ago. The three aforementioned boxers were also glued to the screen and equally inspired by the slugfest "It was a great fight,” said Ockley ABC boxer Kulis, who enjoys a by to the southern counties round of the England junior development championships, after passing the check weigh in last week coming in at 69.3KG. "I watched it with my coach, Faz, and was amazed at Golovkin's power.” "The whole show was great,” said Knill, 52KG boxer of the same club. "But the main event was out of this world.” Tim Bottomly of St Gerards ABC, weighed in at 81kg ahead of his ABA elite under 20 contests, Sussex regional bout in Hastings on September 24. Big fights like brook Golovkin not only attract more fans to the sport but also motivate other boxers to train harder and take bigger fights. How could any boxer not take inspiration from such a huge event. Not just the lionhearted courage of Brook, but also the ruthless efficiency of Golovkin?

Priory Park on the road for opener by Robert Henry sport@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER Priory Park hockey players are gearing up for what will be their first National League game of the season. They travel to Cheltenham on Sunday (September 18) for a 12.30pm kickoff in a keenly anticipated Conference West encounter. Chichester men’s 1s get to rub shoulders with some of the top teams around thanks to a relegation-defying run at the tail end of last season. Chichester beat Bromley and Beckenham 7-3 in the last campaign meaning they swept demotion aside. The men’s 1s first home game of the season takes place on Saturday, September 24 against Exeter outfit Isca at Kingsham with a 12.15 kick-off.
Trio inspired by GGG-Brook fight OUR area's Tim Bottomly, Simon Knill and young David Kulis are all set to box in their respective national tournaments this month. The trio will draw huge inspiration from last week’s modern day classic as Kell Brook gallantly failed in his attempt to dethrone knockout specialist Genedy Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin, (GGG) after jumping two weight divisions in a bid to become World Middleweight Champion. Brook was brutally stopped in the fifth round of the contest with a fractured eye socket, after trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel. In what was widely perceived to be a mismatch when the contest was first made, Brook showed true courage in taking the fight to a man who will go down in history as one of, if not THE, hardest hitting middleweights of all time. Kazakh powerhouse Golovkin hadn't been taken the distance for over eight years as a professional. But with reports on the week of the fight that he was ill, there was a sense in the air that Brook could pull off one of the biggest upsets in British Boxing history. Such rumours were almost instantly dispelled as the fight got underway though when Golovkin landed his first of many power shots, a looping left hook, that had Brook scrambling off the ropes and having to hold. The Englishman bravely fought back, and by the end of the round even reddened the eye of the middleweight kingpin after landing an overhand right of his own. Brook showed flashes of brilliance in answering back with some heavy counters that would have put most middleweights down. Golovkin however would just take a step back, smile and carry on walking forward, terminator style. The stoppage came in round five after a barrage of unanswered punches landed with sickening effect. Even without the injury, brook was systematically dismantled, to the point where he was unable to efficiently defend himself. The brave Sheffield man went out on his shield, even himself questioning

Duo's seniors title victory IAN Hendry and Martin Leo are celebrating after being crowned American Golf Senior Champions. THe pair, from Bognor, totalled a 36-hole total of 78 in the face of difficult conditions, taking the title by six points from Northwich duo Andrew THrelkeld and Nigel Wells. Qualifiers played 36 holes over two days on the Brabazon course at Ryder Cup venue THe Belfry. Hendry and Leo set down a marker with 40 points against a stiff wind in round one despite facing a number of challenges. Martin explains: “I was on a boating holiday before
this so I still felt like I was at sea. I flew back and drove from Bognor to make the tee time but I’m so glad I did. THe organisation by American Golf has been brilliant and to top it all we’ll be on Sky Sports. Next year I won’t share with Martin, though, as his snoring kept me up and I nearly missed the tee time!” Sitting in top spot by two points overnight and just making their tee time in torrential rain, Hendry and Leo set about a repeat performance of their first round. Impeccable teamwork saw them pick up 38 points to secure victory by six.

Starkey hat-trick not enough CHICHESTER City Ladies are wellestablished and enjoying a great time on the pitch. And the area now has another ladies' team in the shape of Pagham. But the Lionesse ladies debut in the Sussex County Women and Girls division one started with 7-3 defeat at Nyetimber Lane against Montpellier Villa. After a positive pre-season spirits were high going into their first game and were even higher after two minutes when they took the lead through Georgina Starkey after a through ball by Anna Guppy. The lead was short lived as they were soon 3-1 down after just 18 minutes with the visitors shooting from distance
and hitting the back of the net without reply. Pagham, to their credit, were still more than a match for their opponents and looked back in the game just before the break with striker Starkey doubling her tally with a volley from a Chantelle Strudwick corner. Pagham hoped to go into the break with one goal separating the sides, however Montpellier rallied to score again to go 4-2 up. Pagham were the better side at the start of the second half and were unlucky not to get on level terms with Mel Miller, Katie Fisher and Strudwick all forcing good saves from the Montpellier keeper. The Lions hitman insists on tucking into a full English at Bognor's Rick's Cafe ahead of a game for Mark Bennett's outfit and is seen here before hitting the road for FA Vase action at Bearsted. So did the fry-up hinder Murfin's performance? Er, no. He got the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win! CHICHESTER City's Jamie Horncastle "entertained" his team-mates with some kind of demented rap on the coach home from Whitstable on Saturday after Miles Rutherford's men earned a 2-2 draw. Let's hope Horncastle can laugh at himself after the video of his wacky warbling was posted on social media. Your correspondent certainly had a giggle.

THOMAS Byrne looks like he has won his race for fitness ahead of Bognor’s big FA Cup clash at Billericay tomorrow (Saturday). Republic of Ireland youth international Byrne, 18, right, went off injured in the Rocks’ Ryman Premier Division reverse at Harlow Town last week. But Nye Camp boss Jamie Howell says he believes Byrne, currently on loan from Brighton, will pass a late fitness test. He said: “Thomas came off with a knock but I think he is going to be okay for the game at Billericay in the cup. “He is a very good player and he gives us options going forward. “The game is crucial, it’s a huge competition and we want to do well in it, naturally.” Bognor reached the second qualifying round after hammering Guildford City 5-1 at home two weeks ago. Now they must try to replicate
that form — and Howell admits a repeat of Ryman premier division win against the Blues earlier in the season would do nicely. Bognor won that game 2-0 and Howell said: “We go there with some confidence having won earlier in the season. "But we need to concentrate on our game, as ever, and if we do that we hope it gets us through.” Turn inside for more football
