Scrap plans for A27! BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CAMPAIGNERS have urged the transport secretary to scrap government plans to redevelop the A27 over fears it

will be ineffective. Members of the group Chichester Moves on and Green party councillor Sarah Sharp addressed Chris Grayling and Chichester MP Andrew Tyrie who were attending the city's Conservative party conference dinner last week.

THey feel that the government's plans will not address the traffic problems which cause severe delays on a regular basis. THe letter, signed by members of the group Chichester Moves On, said: " We believe it is short-sighted and a waste of

public expenditure to simply invest in improved journey times of at best 5 min 40 sec for through traffic at an estimated cost of up to £280m and up to 41 months disruption."

Passengers face chaos as Southern Rail strike again PASSENGERS in Chichester and beyond faced the worst disruption yet this week as Southern Rail workers continued their strike action. Drivers from both the RMT and Aslef unions walked out on Tuesday and Wednesday this week in a continued row over Southern's plans for driver-only operated trains. THe latest strike action saw all trains cancelled with many commuters totally unable to get to work. RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "RMT drivers on Southern Rail are standing shoulder to shoulder with their ASLEF colleagues in a fight for safe train operation. "THis strike action is wholly the responsibility of a Government and a company that have sought to bulldoze through changes that are ill-conceived, finance-led and fraught with danger. "Chris Grayling claimed again that the action on Southern is political - it isn't, it's about safe train operation for both passengers and staff alike. "THe Transport Secretary wants to ask himself why the unions have been able to resolve disputes and reach agreements on Scotrail and elsewhere if our motivation is purely political. "Mr Grayling also claimed again that the RSSB is an independent safety body - it isn't, it's funded by the private train companies. "Finally, Mr Grayling claimed that

there is a campaign of unofficial action organised by the unions - there isn't, and the evidence points to Southern sabotaging services to try and turn the blame onto the staff." "Now is the time for Chris Grayling to make it clear that all of that rhetoric and misinformation is being swept away and that both him and his contractors, GTR, are serious about talks with the union's involved in today's action." But Ian Prosser, the HM Chief Inspector of Railways, has ruled that driver only operated trains are safe. In a letter to the Transport Select Committee, he said: "Trains with doors operated by drivers (known in the industry as Driver Only Operation) have been in operation in Great Britain for more than 30 years. "ORR has scrutinised this approach, and our inspectors are satisfied that, with suitable equipment, proper procedures and competent staff in place, it is a safe method of working." THe RMT union's members first walked out in April. Since then they have been joined by members of drivers' union Aslef. It makes the dispute the longest-running rail strike since the railways were privatised in 1996. A further strike is planned today. Meanwhile, RMT members will take part in a conductors strike on Monday and Tuesday.

Get recycling your electrical items to help the environment PEOPLE across West Sussex are being reminded to recycle old electrical items this Christmas. An estimated 2,500 tonnes of smaller electrical goods are thrown away in West Sussex every year, costing more than £206,000 in landfill tax alone. But toasters, tablets, cameras and Christmas lights can all be recycled free of charge at any of the 11 Household Waste Recycling Sites. David Barling, cabinet member for Residents’ Services, said: “Landfill is not just costly; we are losing tonnes of

precious metals to the ground, never to be seen again. THat means we have to mine more virgin material. “At our Household Waste Recycling Sites, all our electricals, small and large, are collected up and taken to a specialist contractor in East Sussex to be stripped down so the component parts are recycled, not buried.” For more information go to recycleforwestsussex.org and follow the West Sussex Waste team on Facebook and Twitter @ westsussexwaste.

Ho ho ho! Santa's take over as annual run gives charity a boost

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A SEA of Santa's have helped raised thousands of pounds for charity. More than 230 people took part in the Santa Sprint and Stroll which began at the grounds of the Weald and Downland museum on Sunday in support of St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester. Money is still rolling in with at least £3,000 having been raised so far. Gemma Tupper, events and community officer at the hospice, said: "We had a great day on Sunday with lots of our supporters joining us to don a Santa suit and enjoy some festive family fun. "It's a really good family activity. Everyone wants to be a part of it. "Christmas is about family so this is

about bringing the two together. We can have fun and raise money at the same time. "It was a really good day. We were very lucky with the weather because we had rain the day before and sunshine on the day. It was amazing. "THere were plenty of supporters. Everyone was cheering along and there were children running up and down the finish line. "It was a lovely atmosphere." And Gemma said events like this are a good way to help the hospice continue to run. "It's hugely valuable. "We have got people who are there year on year to support the event and to continue to raise the funds that we need." To find out more about the hospice please visit stwh.co.uk.

Business is booming for manager Mike and his team at Worrell and Fry

wading through the myriad of comparison sites and direct insurers promoting this offer and that deal, it is ever so reassuring to realise that not all insurance brokers are the same.

TALK to Michael Maskell about insurance and within the merest hint of time you’ll realise just why business is booming for Worrell Fry and Co Limited. Worrell Fry, situated in busy Aldwick Road, has been satisfying customers for 25 years in Bognor Regis and their unswerving commitment to a principled approach means that not only do they have satisfied folks repeating their business, but a new tranche of clientele keen to let the experts do the work on their behalf.

The company, which prides itself on being innovative and excelling in identifying insurance solutions for both individuals and companies, takes time to identify specific requirements and make recommendations that offer wide ranging cover at competitive premiums. Manager Michael explains: “Along with this modern approach to insurance systems we still maintain traditional values of professionalism and service which endorses our status of being a trusted insurance broker in Sussex, Hampshire and farther afield.” The company insists on a personal touch when it comes to acting on behalf of their clients and in an era when it’s all the rage to go online and start

Oldlands Way have helped it to become an indoor centre for the pursuits. In its first two years to last October, they have welcomed 43,000 visitors to its mixture of ramps and foam pits. Among them was world champion Jordan Clark. THe Base was also a finalist in the awards for the award for the most promising new business but just missed out on the top spot.

THe winners were drawn from 42 finalists who represented 27 Sussex towns. Mike Herd, the chairman of the judges, said: "THis year was a record year. With the amount of entries received, the judging process proved a difficult task. "THe exceptional quality of the entries really shined through and many worthy winners were chosen. Congratulations to all of them." THe success came after Janina scooped the employer of the award in the Business Women Excellence Awards for Sussex. She goes forward to the regional final next September when the winner will be chosen to contest the national title. A spokeswoman for the awards said: "THese awards seek to highlight the best business women or the best businesses owned or co-owned by women and are staged specially to celebrate the success of today’s very best females in business. "Whether we like it or not, many companies today still remain maledominated despite the obvious progress that has been made over the years to change that." Janina said the series of accolades this year - which have also included two national awards - showed the value of THe Base to the town. She said: "All those people who didn't agree with it, and who didn't think it was a good idea, we have really shown them that we have an amazing facility. Tim's mission to inspire a generation at city museum BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk HE'S Chichester's hero who became the first British European Space Agency astronaut to visit the International Space Station one year ago. Now, a free exhibition has opened at the Novium Museum in his honour to mark a year since Tim Peake's Principal mission. It is hoped the exhibition will help to inspire a new generation of young people to become involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. Tim’s father, Nigel Peake, who still lives in Westbourne, has helped to pull the exhibition together. He said: “When Angela and I describe Tim’s astronaut exploits we use the word ‘surreal’. It still seems surreal now when you look around this exhibition and think is this really him. "We know that Tim is delighted with it. He has been coming up with ideas and supplying me with material. "He can’t wait to get back here to see the exhibition himself. "We just hope his message gets through to a lot of young people. "It’s lovely that there are so many hands on activities here and something for all ages and so we were delighted and thrilled to be involved from the

f Pupils with manager Cathy Hakes and Nigel Peake beginning and look forward to seeing many, many people enjoying this.” Pupils from Chichester High School were among those at the launch. Hester Johnson-Cadwell, 14, said: "It's amazing that I am being taught by some of the teachers who taught Tim and walking the same corridors as him. Everyone is so proud of what he has done. "I was interested in space but I didn't know anything about any of this until the school started to get people interested

in this. He was spoken about all over the school." Alex Halfacree, 15, added: "It's not often that we get someone from where we are from achieving amazing things. I have been a lot more interested in space after hearing about what Tim has done." THe exhibition details Tim's journey from the very start. People can learn about what astronauts eat in space, try on a space suit and experience sleeping in Tim's sleeping chamber. THe exhibition even features Tim's

space flight suit. Councillor Gillian Keegan added: "Everyone in our district is incredibly proud of Tim Peake and what he has achieved. "THis is to get people to think about what careers they can have in space. It's to inspire young people to want to do something different and to look at the opportunities available to them." THe UK Space Agency has provided funding for the exhibition as part of the 2016 Principia Mission Grant Scheme.

Let's get Tim back home! CHILDREN in schools across West Sussex have created a unique video message inviting Tim Peake to make a return visit to his home county. THe invitation includes school children launching their own mini rockets. THe video, which features a special poem throughout, also includes some of the school children using sign language and specially-created artwork. Children are keen to hear firsthand from Tim about what it was like growing up in Chichester, how he became the first British European Space Agency astronaut and his enthusiasm for science and fulfilling his dreams. If Tim accepts the children’s invitation, West Sussex County Council and the county’s Youth Cabinet hope to help host a special event, which could be live streamed to all of the county’s schools. Christine Field, West Sussex County Council cabinet member responsible for education, said: “Tim captured the nation’s hearts and our children’s imaginations with his recent successful mission into space. “Not only is he the first British European Space Agency astronaut, he is from our very own patch, West Sussex. We hope that Tim will accept the children’s invitation and visit soon.” Residents can join the call by using the hashtag #WestSussexToMajorTim.

A27 anger BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth..scammell@sussexpost.co.uk It went on to ask Mr Grayling to take into account certain things when making a decision about the future of the A27. THey include the effect it will have on the quality of life for local residents, the preservation of existing homes and listed buildings, the impact on local agriculture, the safety of pedestrians and cyclists and the effects on wildlife habitats. It goes on to say: "Both the Road Space Audit and the A27 proposals fail to consider Park and Ride. "We believe that a well planned Park and Ride facility would do much to alleviate the conflict between local and regional traffic, possibly with great savings in construction costs and hence, ultimately, on the taxpayer. "We believe there was a major failure of good practice not to consider Park and Ride at the outset of the A27 schemes, and therefore call for this option to be investigated before any final scheme is announced." Councillor Sarah Sharp said: "We felt that to invite somebody who is going to make such a huge decision about the future of Chichester to the city for a private event wasn't the most tactful thing to do. "It's not very transparent. We have had a whole history of options come forward and then been withdrawn. "THe fact that the conservative association were lucky enough to get him for their dinner meant that we wanted to be out there and we wanted to hand him a letter which we did. "He shook hands with everybody and

he was very friendly. "But what he didn't do was talk about the A27. He said he would read it but he didn't go into any detail. "But we have done our best. We gave up some time and we have done everything we can." Now, cllr Sharp said she hopes the letter can help move things forward. "I think they ought to re-start the consultation. "THere's no mention of the Park and Ride. "THese are the issues that haven't been considered." In the summer, Highways England announced five options for development of the road and a 10 week consultation period then took place. Almost 5,000 people took part in the public consultation. THe schemes cost from £47 million to £280 million. THey range from a huge flyover and a southern linkroad to some small changes to the roundabouts. THe aim is for construction to start in 2019 and for completion the following year. An announcement about the government's preferred route was due to come out by the end of the year. THe Chichester Post did contact THe Department for Transport for a comment but did not receive a response. Chichester Moves On was formed in order to develop proposals for clean, cheap, fast and convenient public transport. It will also discuss safer routes for cycling and easier ways to get in and out of Chichester. For more information about the group, please email chicmoveson@gmail.com.

"Never-ending and destructive road widening is not the answer" THE green MEP for the South East has given his backing to campaigners about the A27 expansion. Keith Taylor, Green MEP for South East England, sits on the European Parliament's Transport committee. He said: "THis issue is vitally important, not just to the people of Chichester or to me, but to the planet too. Current proposals to ‘upgrade’ the A27 are an example of the government’s short-sighted and

unsustainable approach to transport planning. "Never-ending and destructive road widening is simply not the answer to our transport woes. Instead, we should be upgrading rail facilities, launching a comprehensive new bus system and investing in cycling and walking infrastructure. THese are just some of the ways to deliver sustainable small-scale solutions to Chichester’s congestion problems."

County council cabinet member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: "Each individual group we've donated salt to has its own network and it's a way of helping those most in need. "Some groups will hand the salt out at collection points, some will deliver door to door or via community transport. "It is great to be able to provide community groups with this de-icing salt to help residents stay safe and keep moving this winter." THe de-icing salt was donated to West Sussex Highways by the AA. WEST Sussex Highways have been dropping off early Christmas presents for older residents. Staff toured the county giving out bottles of de-icing salt to residents so they can use it to stay safe on their paths at home. THey delivered boxes of salt to several community groups, church groups, charities and care providers across the area. Packs were handed over at day centres and on local volunteers’ doorsteps. THe idea is for volunteers to distribute the salt to vulnerable people they look out for. THey can then hand it out to those people who are most in need. It will help prevent residents slipping on their garden paths, front doors, and driveways when the weather gets particularly icy. A total of 253 packs of salt went to organisations across the county.

Joy for orphanage BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk GENEROUS caravan owners at a holiday park have rallied round to bring the magic of Christmas to orphans. A total of 163 beautifully-wrapped shoeboxes, filled with children’s goodies, are en route from Bunn Leisure in Selsey, to a Ukrainian orphanage more than 1,400 miles away. Caravan owners at the holiday park have ensured that every child at the orphanage will now get a present this Christmas. THe whip-round was organised by caravan owner Chris Russell, who lives in Fareham, with the help of his friend Andy Moore. THis is the third year they have asked caravan owners to take part – and the response has been bigger than ever. Each shoebox was filled with gifts, including toys and stationery at an average cost of £30 per shoebox. THe response was so great, and so many shoeboxes filled, that Chris and Andy needed a van to transport them to the depot. Chris was inspired to help after seeing photographs of the orphanage, and Andy’s wife was born in the town in Ukraine where the orphanage is. Chris said: “I saw pictures and realised these children have very little hope. "I decided to help as they have done nothing wrong. “Every child deserves to have a Christmas. We take this for granted. “THis is the highlight of the children’s

year.” John Bunn, managing director of Bunn Leisure, said he was thrilled to support it. “THis is a wonderful initiative from our caravan owners and it’s great that so many have come together to help this orphanage," he said. "It really does demonstrate the

importance of ‘the family’ at our holiday village. “Each caravan owner was allocated a child thus ensuring every orphan receives a gift this Christmas. “It’s fantastic to witness the season of goodwill which will help bring some joy to these children this Christmas.”

People help to cushion the blow for cancer patients BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CUSTOMERS have been putting their creative skills to the test in support of breast cancer patients. C&H Fabrics, based in North Street,

Chichester, has been encouraging customers to make heart shaped cushions for breast cancer patients. Customers have been busy sewing and have brought them into the store. THey have then been taken to St Richard's Hospital. Linda Coote, store manager, said: "Lots

of organisations get involved in making these hearts. We decided as a company that we would support that. "All of our nine branches told our customers that if they wanted to make them we would pass them on." THe heart shaped cushions are for patients with breast cancer to use as part of their recovery. THey place them under their armpit to relieve the pain from wounds or scars. "C&H Fabrics is very much a local community store rather than an enormous coorporation. We do feel part of that community," Linda added. "A lot of people want to sew and it's a very simple project. You don't have to have big skills. A lot of people don't have anybody to make things for so this is ideal. "THey can have a go at doing something crafty and it's for a very good cause." And Linda said she has been thrilled at the number of people who decided to get involved. "We had a tremendous response," she said. "THey are still coming in now. Anything that gets people thinking or being creative is great." THe cushions have traditionally been made by members of the local Women's Institute (WI) branches.

Praise for Police BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk SUSSEX Police is ‘good' at keeping people safe and reducing crime, according to a recent inspection. HM Inspectorate of Constabulary's (HMIC) also assessed the force as 'good' at treating all of the people it serves with fairness and respect, ensuring its workforce behaves ethically and lawfully and treating its workforce with fairness and respect. Deputy Chief Constable Bernie O'Reilly said: "I'm pleased that the

HMIC highlights that officers and staff understand the importance of treating all people they serve with fairness and respect. "It is vital that people have trust and confidence in the integrity of police officers, staff and volunteers, who show their commitment in addressing the concerns of the communities we serve every single day. "By working together and actively seeking people's feedback, some whose trust in policing is limited, we have a good understanding of local issues and can gauge satisfaction levels." Sussex PCC Katy Bourne said: "I am

reassured by this HMIC Legitimacy Inspection that Sussex Police is very mindful that it needs the support and trust of the public in order to operate effectively. "I am particularly pleased to see the recognition of the improvements that have been made in dealing with people with mental health issues and the Force’s commitment to maintaining and improving the wellbeing of officers and staff." Council leader swaps top job for a home carer THE Leader of West Sussex County Council has rolled up her sleeves and spent the day as a home car worker. Louise Goldsmith worked a shift with Inter-County Nursing & Care Services, a home care provider based in Oving near Chichester. She was one of a number of senior councillors and staff at the county council to undertake home care shifts around the county in the past few weeks. Louise spent time at the company’s main office with the management team and office staff before heading out on the road. She teamed up with one of the carers, Clare McWilliam, to meet a resident and see the kind of tasks the care workers undertake and to hear how residents feel about having home care. Louise said: “It was an honour to join Inter-County and visit one of the many residents who receives care in their own home. “To hear more about the challenges and the nuances of the role was extremely enlightening, while it was also wonderful to meet Margaret,

who has been receiving care for a few months now and was nothing but complimentary of the support she is provided. “Clare was brilliant; both considerate and personable. It’s great to see home care staff bring a smile to someone’s face while still helping them to maintain an independent lifestyle.” Inter-County carers deliver more than 550 hours of home care every week across Chichester, Bognor and the surrounding villages. Louise’s visit followed West Sussex Care Month in October from the county council, aimed at raising awareness about care and support available in the county. West Sussex County Council is encouraging people to take up a rewarding career in care in the county. Backing the campaign, Inter-County registered manager, Susan Brigstock, said: “Recruiting more carers is our biggest challenge. Without our carers, those needing care wouldn’t be in their own home and that’s where they want to be.”

` Hospice backing Danny in Strictly PEOPLE across West Sussex and beyond are being encouraged to show their support for Bognor Regis’s very own Danny Mac in the final of Strictly Come Dancing. THe Hollyoaks actor grew up in the town and is a patron of St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Chichester where his mum, Jan Greene, works. Last weekend he slipped into the bottom two but was saved by the judges and now he is preparing to go head-to-head with Louise Redknapp and Ore Oduba in the final tomorrow night. Jan, who is the deputy ward sister on the in-patient unit of the hospice, said: “I just couldn’t bear to watch anymore. I have been in the audience every Saturday night but the announcement of the votes last Saturday just brought me to tears.” In fact, the result brought many hospice staff to tears. Staff nurse Sara Waters added: “After such an incredible performance of Saturday night, I was so upset to think that Danny could go out of the competition. He certainly deserves his place in the final with Ote Mabuse.” Danny has been a hands-on Patron of St Wilfrid’s since 2012 and, over this time, he has played an active part in hospice events and calls in whenever he visits his family in Bognor Regis. William Hill had Danny at 4/5 favourite to win ahead of Louise's 11/8 odds and 7/1 for Ore before tomorrow's final at 6.40pm on BBC1.

Voluntary group will have council funding cut back

f Visitors at a recent VAAC workshop in Bognor Regis

FUNDING is to be cut for an organisation which helps charities around Bognor Regis and Chichester. Arun District Council is due to agree to the reduction of £12,000 a year for Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester at its full council meeting next month. A recommendation for the 20 per cent fall in support was made by the council's cabinet on Monday after a proposal by its overview select committee. Cllr Terence Chapman, Arun's cabinet member for environmental services, said: "I fully support the recommendation. Some years ago, when I was the chairman of this council, I went to VAAC's annual meeting. "I asked them how they measured the effectiveness of the grant from Arun. I didn't receive a clear answer." Backing the voluntary sector was important, he said, but the benefits of any grants had to be shown. Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said: "I couldn't agree more. Accountability is extremely important when we are talking about public money." Outside the meeting, VAAC chief executive Tony Sneller said: "We can continue as we are at the moment by using our reserves. But we will not be able to do that in the long term. "So this cut will have an impact in the future. We have already been through this situation recently with a cut in the county

council's support. "We are limited in what we can do because we have to keep a certain level of reserves to comply with Charity Commission best practice." Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester supports and develops the voluntary and community sectors in the two areas. Its work is to ensure vibrant and sustainable community groups, community engagement and action, networking among voluntary groups and maximising their potential from its base in Bognor Regis Town Hall. Support is also provided for partnership work with wellbeing and health and homeless people. It was formed in April 2012 after a merger of the two organisations which performed that function in both districts. THe district council has given it £60,950 a year in the past two years. But this will fall to £48,760 yearly from next April for two years if the cut is ratified by councillors. Arun's leisure and voluntary sector manager, Robin Wickham, said: "VAAC is looking to new sources of funding and more project work. THe much-valued connecting communities team was disbanded last year when partnership funding was reduced or withdrawn." Council deputy leader Cllr Dudley Wensley told the cabinet: "We should not lose sight of the fact that £48,000 is still a considerable sum of money."

Chichester's friendly Business IT Support Team! Providing the answers to all your computing requirements Cyber security and how can I keep my business data secure from being hacked in today’s World where this is an ever increasing threat? Here at Business IT Plus we offer many Cyber Security packages where we are able to assist in the security of your Technology. We offer a Security Audit where we test your infra-structure machines for any flaws and issues that can hinder the security of your data, and we also provide Award Winning ESET Antivirus which protects against any future security threats and viruses that try to enter their way into your computer systems. How can I stop Viruses from damaging my business and causing downtime, causing us to restore and recover data? The best method of keeping data safe would be by saving it via the cloud, many companies save information on a server or on their local computer which is fine – especially if you have ESET Antivirus installed. However with the data being saved in the Cloud, via a data centre, a lot of the security issues and resilience are taken care of. Viruses and Malware are an on-going battle, so having the best software to fight against these is highly recommended. Contact us now for more information and a free quote on Award Winning ESET Antivirus. Do I have the most cost effective and up to date IT Solution in place? We can get our highly trained Engineers to visit your site to generate a report as to whether your IT Solution is up to date and running as efficiently as possible. We are suppliers of some of the biggest brands, (for example Microsoft, Apple, HP) and as such offer very competitive prices.

At Business IT Plus we allocate time for our engineers to research and allow them to keep abreast of all new technological developments to ensure that we are in a position to be able to advise you on the most up to date solutions for your business.

www.businessitplus.co.uk

Is it possible for us to connect remotely to our machines, and access our data files, from anywhere in the World? Many businesses and individuals today operate on a World Wide basis and it has become increasingly important that people have immediate access to the data they require whenever or wherever they are. We can set up remote access yet also ensure that we keep your systems safe and your data restricted to those you wish to share it with. Having remote accessibility allows us at Business IT Plus to utilise this to log on to your machines and in many cases fix your problem without the need to visit you on site. Thus cutting down on our time and your costs to get things back up and running. How do I ensure in our office that we all have access to our main data files so we can share information yet still keep it safe? Here at Business IT Plus we have worked with many and various companies and individuals and are very confident in our ability to be able to offer file/data sharing to match your requirements. Our engineers keep up to date with the new technologies such as NAS drives, servers etc. If all my IT goes down, or if we have a major disaster, how do I ensure my data is saved securely to allow it to be restored in the event of an emergency with the minimum of downtime?

Business IT Plus can offer you support packages that are specific to you and your system requirements and that fall within your budgetary constraints. We can provide an on site initial FREE OF CHARGE audit so we can then advise you on the most cost effective solutions to meet your needs.

Data recovery these days is a priority that most people/companies will have at some point had to consider. Whether it is to fit in with your insurance policy requirements, or whether it is to meet with external Standards that are being imposed on your company. Business IT Plus can come to you premises and provide you with a Security Audit, and when required this can be tailored to meet with ISO9000 requirements. Our Audit will set out clearly how your data is to be protected on an on-going basis and how, in the event of a major disaster, this will be able to be recovered.

If I need to upgrade my hardware and/or software how do I know what I need and what is available to best suit my needs?

How do I go about getting a web site designed that will be cost effective and be able to be managed/updated by myself so I

do not have to rely on a third party to do this for me? What are my options? These days web sites more than ever, are the reflection of your goods and services and as such you want them to look as up to date as possible and be your premium selling tool. Here at Business IT Plus we have in house web designers who are familiar with the many ways web sites can be designed and managed. There are various options open to you to match your own in house technical expertise and also to match with the budget you have for this. We also offer tuition so that the Client is able to manage their own web site data to the extent they want. I have been in business now for five years and have a huge amount of data and I am concerned not only about the security of this, but also the need to have sufficient space to allow me to save more as the business grows and expands. How can you help me with this? There are many options for storage of data these days and of course in particular remote storage to the Cloud. Storage of data is like any filing system it needs to be both secure, accessible and future proofed to ensure you have space for more files as it becomes necessary. Business IT Plus can also create a Client database and this can also be used for data storage.

Finally because Business IT Plus is a well established local company we want to ensure you receive from us exactly what you require and in line with your budgetary expectations. We are always more than happy to come out and meet with you on an initial Free of Charge basis, to help you determine which of our services you need and we can then provide you with a full written quotation to ensure you know exactly what your cost options are. Benefits report sent to MPs by Kevin Smith kevin.smitth@sussexpost.co.uk MPS have been told of the misery Bognor Regis and Chichester residents are suffering because of bungled benefit payments. Citizens Advice has compiled a dossier which sets out the impact wrong Personal Independence Payment assessments are having on its clients. THe report has been sent to MPs with constituents in the coastal area the charity covers from its Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton centres with the call for action to sort out the problems. Carol Groves, pictured right, the chief executive of Citizens Advice Arun and Chichester, said: "We have reviewed in detail the journey of all the clients who have sought advice over the last year and have concluded that the Department for Work and Pensions need to take action to ensure that they come to the 'right decision, first time'." PIP is the number one benefit problem clients bring to the help centre. THe latest annual meeting of Citizens Advice Arun and Chichester was told more than 1,100 clients had sought help about PIP in its last full year. Around West Sussex, there are 7,500 claimants of the benefit. THere are many recipients who do not receive the correct benefit award first time, a spokesman for the centre said. "THis can lead to needless emotional stress, anxiety and debt. In some instances, losing the mobility benefit could lead to claimants being housebound as the result of a wrong decision by the department.

"THe appeals process can take up to a year with the subsequent impact on the family and 65 per cent of all appeals result in a different award." THe report was published last week in a joint venture with Citizens Advice Central and South Sussex. It covers the period from July 2015 to June 2016 and shows many claimants not getting the correct award first time, appeals taking up a year with needless stress, anxiety and debt, unsuitable assessment centres for disabled clients, medical advice being ignored or failing to arrive and a failure to address fluctuating conditions. It states: "THe manner in which the current Personal Independence Payment benefit is implemented has a number of serious and tangible impacts on disabled people and their families. "A process where over 65 per cent of all appeals heard by HM Courts and Tribunal Service about PIP result in a different award cannot be working correctly. "Your constituents suffer financially and emotionally from added stress when benefits, such as Disabled Living Allowance, are removed as a result of wrong decisions being taken through the medical assessment process or by the decision maker. "Back-dating the award can never recognise the stress suffered by the claimant who has had their mobility car taken away and been housebound for 11 weeks while the appeal process took place and a new car was ordered following a successful appeal. Backdating the award will never recognise the debt and the emotion surrounding additional hardship both financial and

wellbeing that your constituent suffers from wrong decisions." Change had to be made, the report says, because it is the government's aim all Disability Living Allowance claimants under 65 in April 2013 and those over

16 will be re-assessed between next October and the end of 2018. "THe impact over the next year will be very significant. It is time for change in the processes to ensure all PIP awards are right first time," the report adds.

Christmas wonders bring season to life

f Plenty of seasonal fun in the woodland

by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 SANTA and his elves created three magical days in a winter wonderland at Aldingbourne Country Centre. Excited children and their parents went along in large numbers to get in the mood for Christmas. Falling snow was an added attraction at the popular annual event to get everyone in the mood for the season of goodwill. THe youngsters eagerly visited Father Christmas in his grotto to tell him what they wanted on December 25. His elves - some of them suffering from over indulging with the mince pies - checked their naughty and nice lists to see which children deserved presents. In spite of many worried looks among the young visitors, all of them happened to be on the good list and left clutching their presents. Local grandmother Karen Williams praised the event and appreciated the effort which had gone into making it so special. She said: "It was the best Father Christmas I have ever been to. My grandchildren loved the afternoon and the snow machine was brilliant. "We will definitely be back next year. THe kids didn't want to leave the woods they were having so much fun."

f Young visitors enjoy the event Visitors to the country centre north of the A27 near Fontwell were kept entertained by the snow falling in the woodland and covering the Christmas trees. Some of the younger children danced in the snow to add to the magic of the event. A Christmas market with stallholders from the area added extra interest for all ages. Face painting was another attraction with seasonal designs to the fore and the Bognor Regis Concert Band played Christmas tunes for extra atmosphere. Event organiser Abigail Rowe, of the Aldingbourne Trust, which runs the centre, said: "We have had a magical three days with Santa and his elves. "It has been wonderful to see the

children so excited. "It is a pure delight to see their faces light up with amazement when Santa and the elves talk to them about something only the child and parent knows - Santa knows everything! "It was a sold out event. We would like to thank everyone who has booked and has, therefore, helped the charity." THe Aldingbourne Trust is a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities across West Sussex. It would like to thank Henry Adams Estate Agents for sponsoring the event and for making the magic possible in the woodland. Brick Kiln Garden Centre provided the |Christmas trees to add an essential touch to the occasion.

Peter Pan-to delight for college show by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11

A SELL-OUT audience was delighted by Felpham Community College's story of the boy who never grew up. THe college's latest pantomine told the traditional tale of Peter Pan with a modern day twist. A cast of 40 students from Years 7-9, and some sixth formers, successfully brought the story to life last Wednesday. Nicole Matthews, the college's curriculum leader for music, said: "All students have worked really hard. "THe pantomime is an extra-curricular activity. So, students have been working after school and at weekends to get everything ready and perfect their performance. "Everyone has put in 100 per cent effort and all their hard work has paid off as it was a lovely evening. Well done to the cast and crew." THe show was the latest in the annual key stage 3 pantos held at the college. Among the performers was Year 7 student Oliver Timmins. Oliver is shown bottom right in the photograph of the Lost Boys. He said: "I played one of the Lost Boys

and the whole experience was great. "I want to be an actor when I was older and this was the first big performance I have been involved with. "It was fun working with all the other students. I was really worried on the night and excited - and my mum, dad and sister all came to watch. "THe show went really well and everyone enjoyed it. I was so happy afterwards."

He has tattoos on both arms and wore a dark green/brown waxed jacket and blue over-trousers over blue jeans when he was last seen. Chipper Chipmunk is a surprise visitor f Edie Swanton, left, and Daniella Cropanase

Pupils told to be bullying aware CYBER bullying was explored by Felpham Community College students. THey were shown how comments made online could be as harmful as those expressed in person. THe Year 8 pupils were also encouraged to recognise they had the power to seek help to tackle bullying. THe workshop was led by the Duck Duck Goose Verbatim THeatre Tour 2016 for the national Anti-Bullying Alliance. Yasmin Tetra, a drama teacher at the college, said: "People often find it easy to make hurtful and unpleasant comments on social media. "It doesn't seem as real as doing it

face to face. THis hopefully set out clear boundaries for students on what constitutes bullying and what students should do if they are hurt or upset." Year 8 student Eadie Swanton said: "Actions, names and comments which we thought was just friends being mean to each other is actually bullying. We are not being silly by being upset about things that happen." Classmate Daniella Cropanese said: "Comments we make as a joke might not come across in that way. "We all use Facebook and Instagram and comments on these can be bullying. It's just doesn't have to be when you see people face to face."

f The chipmunk enjoying life in Aldwick Road

SURPRISED Aldwick residents Tessa and Leigh Neighbour spotted a North American visitor in their back garden. THey could see what looked like a striped pint-sized squirrel happily running making itself at home. THe bemused couple took some photographs and were able to discover, with the help of the nearby pet shop on Aldwick Road, their unexpected visitor was a chipmunk. Mrs Neighbour said: "We saw it in the late morning last THursday. Our first thoughts were that it was a chipmunk but I thought they were bigger. "THis is not much bigger than a rat. But it was quite happy running around our garden." THey took some photographs and found out from the pet shop about the rumoured escape of a chipmunk from a house in the area. THey left their contact details in case the animal's owner did come forward. But Mrs Neighbour said: "He seems quite at home going between our garden and our neighbour's eating the peanuts we put out for the birds. "He seems completely happy but we had never seen anything like it. "You certainly don't expect to see a chipmunk in your back garden in Aldwick Road." THere are 25 species of chipmunk. All of them, except the Siberian chipmunk, live in North America. THey grow up to 11ins long and spend most of the day foraging.

Delicious food at Grill LOVE at first bite is assured with tasty takeaway meals at The Charcoal Grill in Bognor Regis. Mouth-watering mozzarella fingers, marinated fillet of lamb or chicken on the skewer, interlaced with slices of onion, green peppers and mushrooms and grilled over a charcoal grill? Enough to get your taste buds excited? If not, try a traditional Turkish dolma; stuffed vine leaves with rice, herbs and spices. Perhaps a vegetarian pizza with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and sweetcorn fits the bill? It all sounds delicious, right? It could easily be a selection of grub worthy of a trendy High Street eatery menu. But all of the above is available from one of the best of what is more commonly known as “kebab shops” in Bognor Regis. The Charcoal Grill, in the town’s Station Road, offers a vast selection of food. It can be taken away or why not eat in to take advantage of our excellent service in our lovely restaurant area. Customers have been doing just that for 35 years - and they keep coming back for more time after time. Customer Lesley Todd has been a regular at the Charcoal Grill for many years and is happy to endorse both the quality of the service and the food. She said: “I have used this place for a long time now and the guys are so friendly. I find that the food quality is second to none, the delivery is quick and it’s open very late which can be handy, especially when I have been working long hours.” “I genuinely can’t fault it. They also cater for all the family and have a kid’s menu so if you want to have a break from cooking try ordering a takeaway and I am sure that you will not be disappointed.” And the dessert menu is particularly tempting, too. Try the Baklava; a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey. Don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself online at www.bognorcharcoalgrill.co.uk and browse through the extensive menu in the comfort of your own home.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

to All our Customers

Think pink, so says Jan! Visit the Royal Oak, aka the Pink Pub, in the heart of North Bersted JAN Cattermole doesn’t mind admitting that she has both feet firmly in the past when it comes to being the landlady of the Royal Oak – better known as the Pink Pub. For Jan takes great pride in being at the helm of what she describes as “one of the last remaining traditional pubs” in our area. THat said, Jan and her friendly staff are very much immersed in the modern era when it comes to plaudits. THey have just been awarded a certificate of merit from the wise folk at Tripadvisor for the second year on the bounce so they are obviously doing something right. Tripadvisor is the biggest travel website in the world with more than 200 million unbiased reviews, so the merit is certainly one worth having. Jan says: "It was lovely to receive the recognition last time of asking and to get it for the second year is certainly something of which we are very proud. And I think we have every right to be. "What makes it such a significant award is that it is totally independent and there is no gloss on any of the reviews. "In my book that makes it worth having and, by the same token, I recognise the authenticity of the reviews on Tripadvisor, too. THey have independent integrity and

there is no puff, no flim-flam, it is all about the experience the customers had, be that an enjoyable experience or otherwise." THe rave reviews are thoroughly deserved, of course, but quite what aspect of the pub’s service is its best attribute is a matter of opinion. THe Pink Pub is very well known for helping various charity efforts, chief among these is the Pink Pub to Paris charity bike ride last year – which saw madcap Bognor cyclists dressed as superheroes pedal to Paris on a £25 bike – that raised a staggering figure. After the dust had settled, the saddlesoreness worn off and the adding up had been done, the huge effort had raised more than £100,000. Jan admits: “It was a tremendous effort from everyone involved, especially the chaps who did all the cycling, and we were proud to play our part. "We are known as a charity pub and we do our best to help out where we can. We support Snowdrop, St Wilfrid’s and Chestnut Tree House. “After the Paris trip we have become known more and more as the charity pub. We do have a sense of community and try to look after our customers.” As well as a decent pint, or whatever your

` "Choose from starters including homemade soup of the day, sautéed garlic mushrooms, prawn cocktail, paté with toast, or garlic bread."

tipple happens to be, you can dine at the pub and it boasts an extensive menu and very competitive prices – and it is certainly worth making a booking. THere is a convivial atmopshere and, together with friendly, polite and punctual service, it is a dining experience you are bound to relish. Jan adds: “We are serve food from 12 until 6 Monday to Saturday, and then on a Sunday we serve roast dinners 12 to 2.30 and all of the dishes seem to prove popular.” Choose from starters including homemade soup of the day, sautéed garlic mushrooms, prawn cocktail, paté with toast, or garlic bread. A wide selection of jacket potatoes and baguettes with various tasty fillings is also available. When it comes to main meals, the Pink Pub has a mouth-watering choice. If you can get past the all-day breakfast option, that is. Delicious! You can choose from grilled sirloin steak, piri piri chicken breast, grilled salmon fillet, pan fried lamb’s liver, breaded plaice or battered cod. THen there is breaded wholetail scampi, lasagne, a three-egg omelette or steak and kidney pudding. It makes you hungry just

reading the list, doesn't it? All of these mouth-watering meals can be served along with vegetables, salad, chips, potatoes and mushrooms. THere is also a board which details the day’s hugely anticipated specials from which you can select your option. Yes, you certainly are spoiled for choice when it comes to eating here. Set foot in the Pink Pub and you’ll know exactly what Jan means by “traditional” and the pub retains two bars, a throwback to when all pubs had a public bar and a saloon bar and a welcome one at that. Jan admits that running the Pink Pub in a manner akin to managing a public house of yesteryear does have its drawbacks., however small they may be. She added: “We have memorabilia all over the place as you can imagine in a traditional pub and we like it that way and so do our customers. "But to be perfectly honest with you all the the polishing and cleaning of these artfecats, however interesting they may be, can be a real pain!” For more information about the Royal Oak, you can email Jan at jan@thepinkpub.co.uk, or 01243 821002 call to make a booking or for other enquiries.

Raise your glass to the final wines of the year

Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

HEY Diddle Diddle, my most recent riddle is Lidl, with an array of wines galore - to regale your taste buds like never before! Enough of this paltry attempt at poetry and let us, sans délai, put their latest cellar collection to serious scrutiny! Two whites proved alluring, namely a Viré - Clessé priced at £9.99, a typical Maçon wine with a bouquet of acacia and honeysuckle and exhibiting a slight edge and, in culinary terms, a good complement to veal and poultry. THe Fief Des Pierres Blanches 2015 Quincy may well be regarded as a poor man's Sancerre, but this particular example from the Loire region is delightfully fruity and exudes crisp acidity, mineral freshness and a distinctive nose of pepper and white flowers. Quincy benefits from a temperate climate and ripens earlier than its illustrious neighbours in Sancerre and Menetou - Salon and is a floral delight to savour at a price of £8.99. Furthermore, if you avail yourself of four of the cellar wines, you qualify

for a four pounds reduction equating to a pound off a bottle! Mathematical acumen notwithstanding, two keenly priced Champagnes now captivated me in view of their value for money. THe A De Senneval Blanc de Noirs Champagne at £14.99 has a touch of citrus and a vestige of biscuitiness and represents a top - drawer party drink. For an extra two pounds the Bissinger and Co Premium Cuvée from a small, artisan producer has the citrus and apple

notes of a young Champagne and is just beginning to manifest the richer aromas that good Champagnes develop with maturity. Incidentally Christmas Day is looming large and a trip to Harry Boulter's Time Machine shop in the Hornet (see picture above) would seem opportune to procure the Coda Chamber Ensemble's orchestral arrangement of Pink Floyd music which I highlighted in a previous column - a veritable musical gem!

LAST-MINUTE CHRISTMAS CAKE

Returning to more bacchanalian pursuits four red wines appealed to me with an £8.99 2015 Crozes Hermitage oozing red fruits and spices , the epitome of a northern Rhône wine . At an alluring £12.99 price tag the Barolo Vendemmia 2009 Riserva has a powerful nose and exudes plummy red berry flavours and is a bargain at this price . Upping the stakes to £14.99 the 2013 Clos Sainte Anne Pomerol is an up and coming Pomerol with expressive red fruit

Health &

Well-being by Denise Kelly

The power of positivity for the New Year! CHRISTMAS is a time to relax, have all the family over, eat too much, go for long walks and generally unwind. It’s cold outside and the perfect time for cuddling up on the sofa to watch the classic feel good Christmas movies. Groundhog Day has been around for a while. THe movie was made in 1993 and I am sure lots of you have watched it, but if you haven’t I would highly recommend it. THe story is lovely, and so thoughtprovoking. Basically it’s about a man, who simply gets stuck on the same day over and over again. At the beginning of the film he is a grumpy, unappreciative, bored-of-life middle-aged man. THen he gets stuck in this cycle of repeating his day, until he learns to be kind, more thoughtful, helpful, appreciative, considerate, happy and interested in other people’s lives. It’s an amazing journey when you re-evaluate it after watching - its just how life is! He goes through stages of boredom, confusion, anger, frustration, rudeness, selfishness and just a sheer lack of compassion and gratitude for life. When he realises this is getting him nowhere, he has to rethink and re-build himself. He starts to see the gifts in life such as how good it makes him feel to be kind, to smile more, to be cheerful, to listen to others and actually be interested in what they have to say. He begins to do random acts of kindness and perform good deeds without wanting anything in return. He starts to appreciate the tiny things in life, which in turn allows him to love easier, feel much more happiness, and creates a buzz of positivity everywhere

he goes. Yes, it all sounds very cliché! But isn’t that what life should be about? Don’t we all need to stop and think at times if we are being the best that we can be? If everyone just tried to show kindness and care a little more, become more positive and thoughtful, and show more love and gratitude wouldn’t the world be a better place? Creating positivity empowers us, and everyone around us! A positive outlook on life is arguably one of the greatest assets of all. Positive people expect success, good health, happiness, wealth and good relationships and those things tend to show up in their lives. THis is not because they are already successful, or because they are more confident and outgoing, it is simply the attitude. THis is a basic law of attraction: positive thoughts breed positive results. Your thoughts are much more powerful than just electric signals between synapses, they affect your life and those around you. Here are some positivity rules for 2017: 1. Expect good things to happen: success, love, health, happiness, wealth, a hot date! Look for opportunities for your goals to be reached at all times and pounce on them when you see them. 2. Disregard and replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Even if you started thinking something pessimistic, just take a deep breath and think the opposite, positive, thought. 3. Stop hanging out with negative people. THey drain you on a daily basis and prevent you from reaching your

positivity potential. Negative people are burdens and leeches! 4. Before starting on any new project or activity, visualise the positive outcome that you want to come from what you are doing. Fear and failure are no longer options! 5. Do things that make you happy! Keep it simple. 6. No more saying "I can’t", only "I can!" Anything is possible with optimism. 7. Walk and sit with a straight spine and shoulders back. Good posture breeds confidence and optimism. Also exercise regularly, even if it is only light exercise. Physical activity releases

all kinds of positive endorphins that can do wonders for even the most pessimistic people. Your thoughts control your life, so they may as well be happy! Make 2017 your best year yet! Community News & Views My Sisters' House

Dear Sir,

WELCOME to our latest column provided by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre. These columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help. It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

HUMBLED am I – last night I received the Bognor Regis and Chichester Observer (am I allowed to say those words in this paper!) ‘Best Community Person’ Award. I was rather stunned and rather honoured as those that also won and shared the stage were simply awesome. What was really delightful was that many of the nominees were Bognor Regis community champions and it really brought home that ‘my town’ feeling to the audience. I guess I’m talking about that again - yes “community spirit” are you out there? THe concept of community spirit refers to the fact that several persons are sharing something particular. To most of us it implies a competitive spirit, a jingoistic boosterism, such as that displayed by fans of winning football teams or the citizens of a town in which they take great pride. "Our town is better than your town" might be taken as a typical expression of community spirit. Yet in our culture of rugged individualism - in which we generally feel that we dare not be honest about ourselves, even with the person in the seat next to us - we bandy around the word "community". We apply it to almost any collection of individuals - a town, a church, a synagogue, an organisation, a housing complex, a professional association - regardless of how poorly those individuals communicate with each other. It is a false use of the word. We only have to listen to accounts of what life was like in Britain during World War II to quickly demonstrate just how important a close real community is to all its residents. For many, having the community to rally around them became the very thing that got them through the darkest of days. THis spirit kept the nation going, and whilst we may not be at war now, we have certainly experienced tough times over the past few years. If you knocked on ten doors along your street, the likelihood of finding a struggling family behind one of those doors is incredibly high. With redundancies being made left, right and centre, do you know how members of your community are coping in light of losing their livelihood? And vice versa: if you found yourself in a less than desirable situation, would the community know to reach out to you? If this spirit is gone for good and we keep ourselves to ourselves, connections will never be established and we will miss out on the opportunity to make a difference to an individual or group who would truly benefit from our relationship with them. What’s more, we will miss out on the chance to accept community support if we ever wanted it in our hour of need. Is community spirit dead and gone? Absolutely NOT. It doesn’t have to be. Take the first step by finding out if and when a community meeting has been set up. If there isn’t a meeting already scheduled, then make it your responsibility to set one up! Accepting or extending the local olive branch can lead to amazing relationships being formed reminiscent of war time morale; something we could all stand to benefit from in this difficult climate. Pop in and see Granddad, alias Danny Dawes, he knows all about community spirit at 32 West St, Bognor Regis PO21 1XE opp the fabulous Bognor Regis Museum.

BOXING fans raised well over £7,000 at the latest annual charity boxing dinner held by Bognor Regis Rotary Club. THe popular occasion was a sell-out with some 320 diners and 100 standing spectators ensuring a great atmosphere. THis year's staging was completely rejuvenated with the help of David Dear and David Larner. Music, smoke effects and lighting were introduced along with MC Bob May, ring girl Olivia and comedian Miki Travis. Rotarian Peter Stemp said: "THe boxing this year was second to none, featuring

bouts between Sussex and Kent. Sussex won 7-5. "THe best Bognor ABC boxer of the night, Lukas Andriunavicius, was presented with the Des Porter Trophy and the Steve Clinton Memorial Cup was presented by Lee Penson to Alfie Winter, from the Battlebridge Club. "THe members of the officiating body, the ABA, said that this was the best dinner show for many years." THe final total raised for the Rotary club's work was £7,481. THe management and staff at Butlin's has been thanked for staging the evening.

STAFF and customers at a new Bognor Regis store have wasted no time in raising money. THe result was a fundraiser at Wickes off Shripney Road worth £700 for Alzheimer's Research UK. It is set to be the first of many similar events for the charity after its opening by town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon, pictured above. Manager Tim Wordley said a Christmas jumper day was next. Many events were being planned for 2017 to get more money rolling in.

"All Wickes colleagues in the company had the opportunity to determine the brand new charity that Wickes will support." he said. "Alzheimer's Research UK are our worthy winners, after receiving 59 per cent of our final vote. We will, therefore, be launching a new partnership with them." Previously, DIY merchant Wickes had a nine-year relationship with Bloodwise, said Tim, which raised the mammoth total of £5m.

COUNCILLOR Graham Jones says ' THe objectives of the purchase (of Blake's cottage) were made very evident to me from the very beginning.' If he means from the time the cottage was purchased, he shared that knowledge with everybody who read the local and national papers. THere was general rejoicing that the cottage had been bought for the nation. However, he goes on to claim that the objectives have not changed since. If he studies the website of the Blake Cottage Trust and the various hand-outs fed to the press, he will find that the aims have altered considerably. THe first announcement on the website said they were ‘now planning the next stage – the renovation and restoration of the cottage’ and went on to say they intended to ‘remove the later extensions to the cottage… and build a new multifunctional building in its place.’ THat was news to us and caused considerable anger in the village, especially among people who had put effort and money into raising funds to buy the cottage in the first place. We certainly didn't want part of the cottage to be demolished. Nor did we want a new building erected in the grounds. In a handout to the Bognor Regis Observer published on June 17, 2016, the BCT claimed that the building would act as a ‘study, library and meeting place’ and added that they were waiting for permission to carry out ‘urgent repair work to the roof WITHIN DAYS’. We waited but nothing happened. THey also told us that £50K would be spent on architectural plans and drawings for this new building and that the building itself would cost half a million. Bold words for a trust that only had £1,462 in their bank account after they’d bought the cottage However, a subsequent article on the BCT website talked of the new half a million pound building as ‘intended to have a small space for exhibitions and conferences, another for offices and administration,’ plus ‘alternate space for a second residence.’' A residence is a very different thing from a study, library and meeting place. If it’s going to be a residence, somebody’s going to live in it. In the meantime the months were passing and the cottage was visibly decaying. On Saturday, July 16, 2016, I held a meeting in Felpham for local people to decide what they wanted to do about the situation. We considered starting a petition but decided not to do it then, but to watch a little longer to see if the repairs were actually begun. THey were not. By September, the BCT had revealed their plans for visits to the cottage, they said: 1. ‘People’ could visit the cottage on open days. 2. Invited guests could stay and sleep in the cottage for a weekend or a week. (I wonder who they will be and who will choose them?) 3. ‘People’ can elect to become Friends of the Cottage and receive gifts from resident artists who will find refuge in the cottage. As an exercise in elitism and snobbery, guaranteed to put backs up, it would be hard to equal. It’s hardly a welcome mat to the general public. So on September 7, 2016, I wrote another blog presenting the facts and asking people in the village whether we should start the petition we’d talked about at our meeting. THe decision was made and a petition started. THe aims of the people of Felpham have never changed. We want Blake’s Cottage repaired. We said so very clearly in that petition. We the undersigned require immediate action to save this hugely significant building before it’s too later and we lose the birthplace of “Jerusalem” Beryl Kingston

History of art at one of city's prized buildings By Lorna Still, volunteer at The Novium Museum LAST week’s article left Pallant House in use as the offices of the Rural District Council. Many people were keen to see it restored and Walter Hussey, Dean of Chichester Cathedral from 1955 to 1977, was one of these people. He is well-known for promoting modern art in the Church. He commissioned works for the Cathedral, such as the John Piper tapestry and the Marc Chagall window. He made friends with many artists and gathered a large private art collection. In 1977, he donated this collection to Chichester, on the understanding that it would be housed in a restored Pallant House. THe council moved its offices to other premises in 1979 and the Friends of Pallant

House was formed. THe House opened as an art gallery in 1982, showing modern art in a historic, domestic setting, just as Hussey wished. Hussey lived to see the opening, dying in 1985. Restoration continued for some years after this. THe rooms were restored in different styles from the early 18th to the 20th centuries, to reflect the years when the House was used as a domestic dwelling. Charles Kearley was a property developer who had a modern house specially built to house his collection of modern art at Hat Hill, Goodwood, where the Cass Sculpture Foundation is now. He bequeathed this collection to Pallant

House in 1989. More donations followed, including a collection of eighteenth century Bow porcelain from Geoffrey Freeman. By the late 1990s, the gallery was bursting at the seams. THe answer to this problem came in the form of architects Sir Colin St John Wilson and his wife Mary Jane Long. Wilson is best known as the designer of the British Library building in London. He had also formed friendships with many artists and built up a collection of over 400 works which he wanted to donate to the nation. However, he wanted control over the building in which these works would be housed. With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council, local council and other donors, Wilson, Long and her professional partner Kentish created a proudly modern

extension to Pallant House. It was built on the site of some neo-Georgian offices, and it quadrupled the exhibition space. It was one of the first buildings in the UK to be heated and cooled using a geothermal system. THe extension was opened in 2006 and won the 2007 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award. THe gallery also won the 2007 Gulbenkian Prize (now called the Museum of the Year award). THe judges were very enthusiastic about what they described as the ‘vibrant relationship between old and new’. Pallant House began as something of a trailblazer in 18th century Chichester and it still continues to surprise and challenge us today, both as a building and as the home of one of the best collections of British modern art.

Kia's new CEE’D GTs mix power and looks Twin models feature comfort and elegance KIA’S GT twins, the three-door pro_cee’d GT and five-door cee’d GT combine sparkling performance with premiumclass sporty looks. BOTH are powered by a turbocharged version of the Gamma 1.6-litre directinjection petrol engine, which satisfies EU6 emissions standards. Driving through a six-speed manual gearbox with an ideal spread of ratios, it delivers a scintillating, off-the-line performance, with 0-60mph achievable in 7.3 seconds - on the way to a top speed of 143mph. At the same time the pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT are efficient everyday cars, with the emphasis on usability and civility in

all conditions, rather than raw track-day performance. Sports-tuned suspension, steering and powerful all-disc brakes, now uprated from 16 inches to 17 inches at the front, ensure they are more than capable of handling the impressive power and torque outputs of 201bhp and 265Nm. Both feature stylish new 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Sport tyres. THe increased size of the front brake discs shortens the 62-0mph stopping distance from 36.4 metres to 35.2 metres. THe new GT models have an electronic sound generator which delivers an even more distinctive and exciting engine note into the cabin. When activated via a ‘GT’ button on the

steering wheel, the traditional analogue speedometer changes to a digital numerical display and shows torque and turbo gauges. A new aluminium engine start/stop button is part of the Smart Entry System, complementing the new chrome-tipped window switches and air-vent surrounds which lend the interior an even classier appearance. Equipment upgrades include the addition of an MP3-compatible DAB radio as part of the six-speaker audio system. THere are now illuminated USB and AUX ports, while the CD player has been ommitted due to the preference among buyers for digital music streaming. THe GT models also have a new 7-inch satellite navigation screen with Kia Connected Services featuring TomTom® Connected services. THis uprated system includes European mapping and a Traffic Messaging Channel, and permits UK postcode entries. It allows drivers to choose the fastest, shortest or most fuel-efficient route to their destination and supports 15 languages. TomTom® functionality is another first for Kia, and supplies additional driving information such as traffic updates, speed camera locations and weather reports. THe 7-inch screen is also linked to a colour reversing camera. As one of the flagship models of the cee’d and pro_cee’d ranges, the GT models are

offered in an extremely high specification. THeir exteriors benefit from a number of unique styling touches, including the front bumper designs, side sill mouldings, dual exhausts and 18-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers and 225/40ZR Michelin Sport tyres. On the inside the Recaro seats are finished in leather and suede, with power lumbar adjustment. Red stitching is applied to the D-shaped leather steering wheel with perforated grips and the gear knob, and there is black headlining and high-gloss black trim garnish. For driver comfort and convenience there is dual air conditioning with an ioniser, cruise control with a speed limiter, xenon automatic adaptive lights, rain-sensing wipers and Bluetooth phone connectivity with music streaming. THere is also a unique ‘GT’ TFT LCD dash display, electric windows and heated folding mirrors with puddle lights and privacy glass on the rear windows and tailgate. THere are also heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, the Smart Entry system with an engine start/stop button and an automatic de-fog system. THe GT models, like every Kia, come with a seven-year, 100,000-mile transferable warranty. For more information contact Newbarn Kia, 65 Aldwick Road, Bognor Regis; Telephone 01243 841200.

Blues aiming for three in a row after PostSport routing Colchester at Oaklands Park CHICHESTER will be looking to make it three wins out of three as the Blues continue to pull themselves away from the bottom of the table. After a dreadful run throughout October and November, Rob Lawrence's side have finally pulled their socks up. A win on the road against Guildford was followed up by a 40-10 victory against fellow strugglers Colchester last week. THe five points means the Blues finally have breathing space between themselves and the bottom two in the National League THree London table. Next up are fifth placed Guernsey, who come to Oaklands Park tomorrow (2pm) and a confident Chi believe they can keep that wining feeling going against the Channel Islanders, who have lost two on the trot. Roger Gould, the club's press officer, said: "We are now just four points adrift of rising from the relegation area and are playing with renewed team spirit. A lot will be riding on the next match against Guernsey." Chi will be hoping to repeat the start they made against Colchester last week. It took just three minutes for the Blues to cross the line for the first time, with hooker

IT'S nearly Christmas and the divisional pairs knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club. Division 1 saw 17 pairs take part, the third best turnout on record. THe first round saw a 180 from Rob Misselbrook (Hunston Club) who was partnering team mate Julie O'Hara. THey missed out in round two after losing to Darren Rich & Darren Whiting (Claremont Samba's). Rich & Whiting took on Hayley Gatford & Graham Clear (Hunston Club) in the first semi-final, and made their way to the final after having the edge over their opponents. THe second semi-final saw Richard Pennells & Stuart Gray (POW 'B') go up against Wayne Wadsworth & Micky Rowland (Claremont Samba's). A tough match saw Wadsworth & Rowland, the number one player in the averages so far this season, making their way to the final. THe Division One final saw Whiting win the bullseye over Rowland to get the first throw, but a 140 from Wadsworth and 134 from Rowland saw them on the double first. Wadsworth & Rowland both missed the doubles, giving Rich &

Mark Giddings crashing over after a lineout drive. Chris Johnson made it 12-0 shortly with a converted try before Chichester broke through at pace and, after a few rucks, Nick Blount stretched his long frame over for the third try THe bonus point was secured just before half time when winger Matt Woodhouse finished strongly in the corner. With the visiting Essex side replying with just one try, it was 26-5 at the break. THe second half was even for a while and Colchester found their attempts to get back into the game frustrated by Chichester's covering and keen tackling. THe deadlock was broken after good scrum work from the Blues saw Harry Seaman touch down at Vultures. A yellow card for Chi and a further try for the visitors did not stop the home side from pushing on. THe victory was rounded off when Woodhouse scored his second of the afternoon, which Henry Anscombe (5 of 6) converted, to complete the 40-10 rout.

f Chi (Blue) repel a rare Colchester attack during the convincing 40-10 win at Oaklands Park

Dragon Flyers soar to regional success BISHOP Luffa pupil William Foden was jumping for joy after being crowned regional trampoline schools champion. Foden, who was taking part in his first individual competition, took first place in the under 14 boys novice section after what his coaches described as an "amazing" performance. He was one of nine members of the Bognor-based Dragon Flyers club to take part in the south east championships in Gillingham. Among them was Anya Johnston (Ormiston Six Villages School) who came third in the under 19s competition, despite being three years younger than most of the opposition. In the same category Ellie Morton (Selsey Academy) finished eighth and Jenna Partridge (Felpham Community College) placed tenth. Elsewhere, Sofija Kalnicenko (Chichester Free School) celebrated her 12th birthday with a bronze in the 14 years and under elite group. She was closely followed by Izzy Hauxwell (THe Regis School) and Libby Morton (Selsey Academy) in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Manon Bailey (Aldingbourne), aged seven, finished seventh in the 11yrs and under novice section while Amelia Glass, who is in Year 7, competed for the first time in the Year 9 and under novice section gaining Ormiston School 12th place out of 63 participants. Coach Linda O'Leary said: "THe club are very proud of all their trampolinists' performance, attitude and sportsmanship. Whiting time to catch up - and then take the first leg. Rowland started the second leg with an in-shot of 103, but Rich followed with a 100 in-shot. Scores of 81 & 99 from Whiting were matched by tons from both Wadsworth & Rowland, but a 137 from Rich saw them take the lead. Whiting missed a chance for the win, and Rowland took out 73 for the second leg. THe final leg started with some good scoring from both pairs. Both teams then struggled to hit the finish, but eventually Rowland nailed double top, taking the leg and the win, making himself and Wadsworth the Division One Pairs Champions. Division Two saw 16 pairs turn up. With last years champions now in Division One there would be new champions, but who would it be? Dave Owens and Nick Hales (THe Monters) overcame Frankie Rackham & Del Hutchison (Wheatsheaf ) in the first semi while Dave Bourne & Ben Lubbe (Friary Arms) beat teammates Jordan Beacher & Ben Bambridge in the second. THe Division Two final saw Bourne with first darts over Hales. It was a scrappy first leg and after a few misses from both sides, it came down to the doubles. Owens struck first, hitting double top to take the first leg. THe second leg saw no-scores from

both teams again, but this time Hales got the double-in score first. Smaller scores from both side left it quite close until Owens hit 125 to leave Hales with 52. Hales could only leave 16 for Owens, and he only needed two darts to hit the double, making himself and Hales the Division Two Pairs Champions title. Full results available on www.bognordarts.co.uk

"Much better"- Pagham's Lions return to winning ways in style Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk PAGHAM look to have steadied the ship in style, smashing 12 goals in two games just three days apart. Mark Bennett's side had been through a bit of a rough patch, losing two crucial games and drawing with league leaders Shoreham, which left them slightly adrift from the top of the SCFL Premier. But the Lions have come roaring back smashing six past Worthing United away last weekend, which lifted them back up to third. A few days later, they repeated the trick at home, convincingly dispatching Loxwood in the RUR charity cup quarter final. THe two wins set up Bennett's side nicely for a key game at Nyetimber Lane tomorrow, as they host fifth place Eastbourne United (3pm). Chairman Tony Shea said: "We're really pleased with the way they have responded after those two losses against Eastbourne Town and AFC Uckfield. We have been a different class in the last couple of games "THe score flattered us a bit against a very good Loxwood side. But we are into a second

f Bosham (red) go close during Westfield win

Bosham into cup semi-final BOSHAM left it late to overcome a battling Westfield side and make it into the quarter finals of the Sussex Intermediate Cup. THe Robins have been all conquering in the league so far this season, sitting top of the SCFL Division Two after winning 13 of their 14 matches. But they nearly spurned the opportunity of a potential double by struggling in the last 16 of a competition the Walton Lane side have never won before. Andy Probee's side thought they had done enough, thanks to a Bradley Miles effort on the hour mark. But a late strike from Martin Dobinson for the side based just outside of Hastings pegged Bosham back. Most were preparing for extra time - until four minutes into injury time, Graeme Dowden converted a penalty. THe 3-1 victory was rounded off by a Marco Giambelardini strike just before the final whistle. THe win takes them through to a quarter final against West Sussex Premier side Lavant or

AFC Varndeanians reserves. Before that, the Robins are in league action tomorrow hosting Rustington at Walton Lane (2pm). With Bosham in cup action, Sidlesham, pictured below, had a chance to cut the gap at the top of the SCFL Division Two. Daren Pearce's side took the opportunity with both hands, defeating bottom side Ferring 5-1. Callum Dowdell and THomas Bayley got the Sids off to a fast start before THomas Kelly rounded off a good team move for the third. Into the second half, Dan Bassil fired home the Sids' fourth before Bayley teed up 16-year-old Callum Litterick who fired home his first goal in senior football. THe Sids will look to join Bosham in the quarter finals of the Intermediate Cup tomorrow, when they travel to East Preston under 21s (3pm). THen the two rivals will face off against each other at Sidlesham's Recreation Ground on Boxing Day (11am).

semi final of a cup competition now, which we're all delighted with." He added: "We owe Eastbourne a beating after losing in the first game of the season over there. THey had four shots and beat us 4-3. I still don't know how we lost that one." Pagham's return to winning ways started against Worthing United last Saturday. Kieron Pamment netted a first half hat-trick, which makes it 18 so far for the campaign and puts him top of the league's scoring charts. Not to be outdone, Ryan Morey repeated the three goal trick in the second half. And despite a late consolation for the Mavericks, the Lions secured a 6-1 win and made the journey back with all three points. Former Bognor Regis man Morey remained in ruthless form on Tuesday night for the visit of Loxwood in the charity league cup. He bagged a brace in the 6-0 victory, with Liam Humphreys (2), Scott Murfin and Pamment rounding off the scoring. Next up the Lions is Eastbourne United, a side that sit one point and two places behind them in the SCFL Premier. A win could take the Lions into second above Haywards Heath. THen it's all eyes on to the crunch Boxing Day grudge match against local rivals Chichester City at Oaklands Park.

Chi's eyes back to the SCFL CHICHESTER City will be looking to end 2016 on a high - starting with in-form Eastbourne Town at Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm). Miles Rutherford's side have impressed on all fronts so far this season, currently sitting fourth in the SCFL Premier and into the last 32 of the FA Vase. With Chi not in cup action again until the new year, all focus is now on the league. With three games in the next two weeks, hopes are high at Oaklands Park that the Lillywhites can continue their unbeaten record in the competition which currently extends back to the start of September. THey will have their work cut out though with this weekend's visitors Eastbourne Town starting to find some form after struggling early on. THat is followed by a trip to the everdangerous Lancing on the 4G pitch at Culver Road on Tuesday (7.45pm). THen it's the big one - Pagham at home on Boxing Day (11am), with the visitors currently sitting third in the SCFL Premier and always eager to get one over on their local rivals. Rutherford's side last tasted defeat in the league in September, losing 3-1 against runaway leaders Shoreham. But they never looked like repeating that as they entertained Littlehampton Town at Oaklands last weekend.

f Chi (Green/White) score in the 4-0 win against Littlehampton Jack Lee and Jamie Horncastle put Chi on the right course with two strikes just before half time. THen in the second period, Kieran Hartley and Ellis Martin rounded off the scoring with two goals in four minutes around the hour mark. THe 4-0 loss was a bad day at the office for Town, who also had midfielder Danny Hand sent off.

THat was followed by a trip to Conference South side Eastbourne Borough in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday night. Despite three division separating the two sides, Chi battled hard and went down 2-1. Scott Jones thought he had taken the game into extra time when he took advanatge of a mistake to equalise for Chi. But a late curling effort from Nathaniel Pinney sealed the win for the Sports.

Selsey soar up the table after five star showing

Email@ sport@sussexpost.co.uk

SELSEY continue to soar up the table after a five star show against Oakwood. After a stop-start season, the Blues are starting to deliver some consistency at last and were rewarded with a 5-1 win away at the Crawley-based side. THat victory took them into ninth of the SCFL Division One, with the Blues still having up to five games in hand on the sides around them. A repeat performance will be tough, though - with high-flying Steyning Town the visitors to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm). Town are currently fourth, four points off top spot, and unbeaten in the past three. THe Blues do have previous on them though, beating Steyning 6-2 in the Peter Bentley Cup on the opening game of the season.

One man who will be looking forward to the match is Morgan Forry, who continued his good run of goalscoring form. THe front man netted twice in the win against Oakwood, making it seven in his last six games and 12 in total for the campaign. Joe Manners and Joseph Clarke also netted in the first half for Steve Bailey's side, before Tom Groom added a fifth late on to round off the victory. THe Steyning game is the start of a tough few weeks for the Blues. On December 27 they travel to East Preston (3pm), who sit fifth and are regarded by some as the best side in the division. THen it's a clash with Storrington on January 2 at home, with both sides hoping they can drag themselves up the table to take some good form into the New Year.

f Bognor fans will be looking forward to seeing the Rocks back in action

Howell: Rocks' rested and raring to go at Folkestone after week off Next Game

Folkestone Invicta (A) tomorrow | 3pm

ROCKS boss Jamie Howell has said his side are fully rested and raring to get back into action after a rare week off. Bognor have defied all the odds so far this season, sitting second in the Ryman Premier despite its small squad being decimated by injuries. With last weekend's would be opponents Leiston in FA Trophy action, Howell's men have had no game for 11 days. And the manager claims it has been welcomed by all as a chance to rest up and take stock ahead of the busy Christmas period. Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "We needed the rest to be honest and the break has come at the right time. "We've had seven players out injured and there's not a single team out there that would not struggle with that number of players out." THe Rocks kick off the Christmas period tomorrow, heading to the Kent coast to play Folkestone Invicta (2pm). Howell will be hoping his side can rediscover some consistency with the Rocks winning two and losing two of the past four games. THe time off has meant Gary Charman, Jimmy Muitt, Alex Parsons and Dan Beck have all had a chance to recover and are in contention to make the squad for tomorrow's trip. It will not be an easy task, though. THe Seasiders, who are currently tenth in the league, have been formidable at Cheriton

Road so far this year - losing just once in 12 home league matches so far. Folkestone are also on a good run of form, unbeaten in five and coming off the back of a 4-2 win against Kent rivals Ramsgate in the county cup. THey are managed by the experienced Neil Cugley, who has been with his home town club for 20 years and overseen more than 1,000 matches at the helm. He was instrumental in leading the Seasiders to the Ryman South title last season. Rocks' fans know that a win could take them back to the top of the table, as they currently sit one point behind leaders Needham Market who won in midweek 2-1 at Harlow Town. THe Folkestone match will be followed by a home match against Ryman South side Horsham in the Sussex Senior Cup at Nyewood Lane (7.45pm). Howell's options have been boosted with two new signings, with Dylan Barnett and Connor Tighe joining on a month's loan from Brighton and Hove Albion. Midfielder Barnett is rejoining after a similar spell earlier in the season, which saw him grab three goals in 15 appearances. Tighe is a Welsh winger who Rocks fans will remember from a successful spell at Nyewood towards the end of last year. Both will be in the squad for Saturday's match at Folkestone.

Dolcetti loving life in Bognor IT may not be La Dolce Vita - but Bognor's Italian midfielder is loving life on the south coast. Despite only being in the country for a few months, Lorenzo Dolcetti is fast becoming a fan favourite at Nyewood Lane. Since making his debut in October, the Italian midfielder has brought a bit of continental flair to Jamie Howell's side. And despite the odd bit of communication breakdown, the 20-year-old is starting to establish himself as a key player in the Rock's squad. Howell said: "I'm really pleased with him. He has got a lovely touch. "It's taken him a little while to get used to the pace of the game in English football but he is improving week in, week out." Dolcetti signed for THe Rocks in October 2016 after moving to the area to study at the University of Chichester. He came to Nyewood Lane with a decent football pedigree - having made 27 appearances in Italy's Serie "D" for ASD Oltrepoveghera. His home town of Cesena is just a few miles away from Italy's Adriatic Coast- and it seems that life by the sea is suiting the laid back

dressing room with the lads, which is always youngster. He trained at Bognor for several weeks while good to see. "He's settled in really well." he waited for his international clearance to Dolcetti will know that competition for come through. Since making his debut against AFC Sudbury places in the Rocks squad is strong, though in October, he has made ten appearances for with the recent additions of fellow youngsters Connor Tighe and Dylan Bartley, and the the Rocks. A strong cameo during the away defeat at return from injuries of Dan Beck, Harvey Whyte and Alex Parsons meaning Howell has Lowestoft saw him serve up his first assist. Since then, Dolcetti has improved with every plenty of options in the middle of the park. game, bagging two more assists in the 3-1 away win at Leatherhad and then a man of the match display in the 2-0 victory against Kingstonian. Boss Howell said: "He's getting good experience with us and with the university and he'll only improve with more games. WELCOME to the first of, I hope, many columns from a Bognor Regis Town Football Club supporter and volunteer. What a great club we have on the south coast and I hope you will enjoy this and future pieces. While I write this, the team are on a welcome break from football. THis is because Leiston (who Bognor were due to play last Saturday), progressed into the next round of the FA Trophy, meaning Bognor’s home game against the East Anglian side didn’t take place. No football on a Saturday? Unheard of really during a busy season in the Ryman Premier League for the Rocks. But everyone is looking forward to a busy Christmas and New Year period. Bognor travel to Folkestone Invicta this Saturday. THe coach will be running to this and I am looking forward to the trip as always. THe BRTFC Supporters Club are doing a great job subsidising the cost of coaches for the fans to near enough all of the away fixtures this season. I’ve always followed Bognor at home but now I can follow them away too! All the fans are really nice and its a great laugh on the coach - all the fans are passionate about the Rocks. If you are thinking about supporting a local club, then support Bognor. It’s been a rather topsy turvy period for the men in green and white. Two losses and two wins in the past four matches. We succumbed to a dogged Hendon on Saturday, 26 November. We weren’t even at the races that day. But then, we bounced back with a 2-0 victory at home to Kingstonian only days later. We made the trip to Tonbridge Angels and got beat soundly 4-1 the following Saturday but then came back with a rather important win against strugglers Harrow Borough at a misty Nyewood Lane. THe win was expected but it was a tough match. Most fans would agree that those struggling always seem to step up their

game against those in the higher positions. And this game was no different with Harrow Borough and they might feel hard-done by given their missed penalty deep into the second half. Obviously, a lot of the fans are comparing our performances to last season. But after the departures in the summer it was always going to be difficult to replicate the success we had. It was one of the best seasons I have experienced, getting through to the semi finals of the FA Trophy and having the opportunity to play against, the now returned Football League side Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. It was a tight first leg with Rocks succumbing to only a 1-0 defeat at Nyewood Lane, before travelling the seven hours, give or take, to Cleethorpes to try to right the deficit. It was a great atmosphere and around 200 fans made the trip up. 2-1 was the final score, meaning it was 3-1 on aggregate. But what a great finish by Dan Beck to draw it level for 1-1! Comparing such a season to this year, it seems that the team has taken a hit in all of the major cups, but on the other hand we are in direct competition with local rivals Havant & Waterlooville at the top of the table. In my view, once we have Gary Charman, Harvey Whyte, and Alex Parsons 100 per cent fit, we will be ready to battle on and make a real go of the championship this season. What a start James Fraser has had with his season so far, plus Lorenzo Dolcetti in midfield, and he is fast becoming a fan favourite. Jimmy Wild, despite a recent cheekbone/jaw injury is also gaining in confidence week in and week out, and is showing small glimpses of becoming a top striker in non-league football in years to come. Here’s hoping for three points on Saturday at Folkestone Invicta! I hope to see you all there. UP THE ROCKS!

Follow the Rocks with us weekly!
